Chesshire gets nine months Defence lawyer says sentence in South Delta overdose case is far too harsh IAN JACQUES

A B.C. Supreme Court judge has handed down a nine-month jail sentence to a South Delta man for his involvement in a highprofile drug overdose case.

Daniel Chesshire learned his sentence last Friday in a New Westminster courtroom after being convicted earlier this year of one count of trafficking in fentanyl.

He was charged after nine young adults overdosed at three separate locations in South Delta within a 20-minute period three years ago. All nine survived.

Upon hearing the sentence, Chesshire’s lawyer Garry MacDonald asked whether his client had time to get his affairs in order and come back to surrender himself into custody, but Justice Nathan Smith denied that, and Chesshire was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs as his family and friends looked on.

Outside the courtroom, MacDonald said he felt the sentence was far too harsh.

“I’m very surprised.

I don’t think Daniel should go to prison,” said MacDonald. “There are so many drug traffickers that do it for a living that

haven’t gone to prison and he is being given a very harsh sentence for, I guess, the result. If he spent his time in Ladner selling drugs all weekend he would be able to go home today, but because there were people who were injured by the taking of fentanyl, the judge felt there had to be harsher consequences, I guess. I disagree strongly.”

When asked if there was an avenue for appeal, MacDonald said, “There is, but that takes so long.

He is already in custody, so by the time we would deal with that he would have served his sentence.”

During the sentencing

hearing in September, defence sought a suspended sentence and two years of probation, while the prosecution asked for three years of jail time.

In delivering his reasons, Justice Smith cited both case law and mitigating factors, including two days of testimony from Chesshire’s family members and friends.

“I agree that Mr. Chesshire’s age, lack of record, genuine remorse, productive life and strong family and community support are all significant mitigating factors,” Smith said.

However, he said a suspended sentence would

not be sufficient.

“Some period of imprisonment is necessary,” Smith said.

In addition to a ninemonth jail sentence, Chesshire received two years of probation to begin after he’s released.

Probation comes with strict conditions, including remaining at his residence between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. except for purposes of employment or medical emergency.

In March, Chesshire was found guilty by a jury of one count of trafficking in fentanyl. Prior to the start of the trial he pled guilty to one count of trafficking in cocaine.

Longtime Tsawwassen resident and community volunteer Vickie Sangster is being remembered.

Sangster passed away Oct. 24 after a courageous battle with lung cancer, surpassing her initial sixand-a-half-year diagnosis by five years.

Sangster received the Citizen of the Year award at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s Hats Off to Excellence gala in 2014.

A Rotary Club of Tsawwassen member since 2008, Sangster championed the group’s Rotary WaterWorks water park project at Diefenbaker Park. At the event she said she’s just a person who likes to help out and work with others.

She later received an honourary lifetime membership from Rotary.

She also received a 10-year pin of recognition for volunteering at Delta Hospice. Sangster also spent time volunteering with Food on the Corner and as a director with the Delta Sports Hall of Fame.

Delta’s emergency weather shelter is set to open at Ladner United Church.

Now in its third season at the 48th Avenue church, the shelter can accommodate up to nine people and will be open from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. when the temperature drops below zero or in severe windy and rainy weather conditions.

Shelter coordinator Shirley Baker has been working with Options Community Services, Delta Fire Department, a small number of volunteers and Ladner United Church council to ensure the shelter is ready to open when called upon.

“Once there is a call for us to open, we will then

re-asses every day if the need is there or weather conditions dictate to open for longer periods,” said City of Delta social planner Gillian McLeod.

“Sometimes it is just continued and then we will alert everyone when we deactivate.”

McLeod said this year Baker is using the City of Delta seasonal start-up funds to update signage to direct folks to the shelter.

McLeod said Delta is grateful to Ladner United, Baker and all the volunteers for everything they do to ensure there is support for those in need.

“It’s warmth and welcome for whatever time is needed,” said McLeod.

“Shirley is a gem. (We’re) very grateful to her and all the volunteers.”

Baker said the commu-

nity has always been great in donating items for shelter users. She is hoping that goodwill will continue this year.

“The most valuable gifts would be to have some more gift cards to have on hand,” said Baker. “They can be from Save-onFoods, Starbucks, some of the local coffee shops.”

Donations can be dropped off during shelter operating hours in the evening or at the church on Tuesday through Friday mornings.

The shelter also welcomes food donations, items like fruit cups and soups with pull tab lids, as well as water, coffee or hot chocolate.

Socks, gloves and scarves are always welcome as are hand warmers, Baker said.

Speed limit to drop next year on Trunk Road SANDOR GYARMATI

New safety measures, including a reduced speed limit, will be implemented on the rural stretch of Ladner Trunk Road.

Delta council has approved recommendations put forward by the engineering department, which include reducing the speed limit to 70 km/h from 80 km/h.

In response to a request by Delta police, staff reviewed the posted speed limit along Ladner Trunk Road (Highway 10) between 72nd Street and

Highway 91.

A report to council notes the review evaluated factors such as roadway geometry, lane widths, roadside hazards, pedestrian and cyclist exposure, as well as frequency of intersections.

“A speed limit reduction to 60 km/h was also considered, but the Transportation Association of Canada does not recommend using a posted speed that is inconsistent with drivers’ perceptions and then rely on enforcement efforts to reduce operating speeds. Posted speed

limits that are significantly different than prevailing speeds contribute to speed differential and a higher risk of collisions,” the report explains.

Other roadway improvements include raised paint markings and reflectors to improve visibility, reflective delineators alongside ditches and improved street lighting.

There’s also going to be an emergency pull-out at 104th Street for police enforcement and four new speed radar signs.

A controversial high-rise proposal in North Delta will be going to a public hearing.

More than 200 residents and onlookers jammed Kennedy Seniors’ Centre Monday night to watch Delta council vote 4-3 in favour of preliminary approval, which sends the proposal at the corner of 75A Avenue and Scott Road to a public hearing.

Mayor George Harvie broke the tie after councillors Dylan Kruger, Alicia Guichon and Bruce McDonald voted in favour while councillors Dan Copeland, Lois Jackson and Jeannie Kanakos were against.

“I take my hat off to the proponent for the work they have done to meet some of the concerns and amenities, but I feel that the project is such a far departure from the Official Community Plan that I will

be voting to reject the proposal,” said Copeland.

Kruger said it was important to get full public feedback and listen to the community before making a decision.

“I think after many years of discussion on this topic and many different variations we need to come to a conclusion for the sake of the community, the neighbourhood and the proponent,” said Kruger.

a public hearing is much lower obviously than the bar to approve a project and in my view, I believe that every project has the right to make it to a public hearing.”

Harvie said he would not make any comments as to the merit of the project, saying he wanted to hear from the public before making any decisions.

The application by Arzone Real Estate Investments Ltd. and Hari

Homes Inc. originally proposed a 35-storey high-rise with 280 units as well as 14 townhouses. A revised proposal has increased the number of high-rise units to 329, while reducing the number of townhomes to six.

The revised proposal also includes 70 affordable housing units under the Affordable Home Ownership Program, in partnership with B.C. Housing, aimed at middleincome earners.

Residents opposed to the proposal, many of which were on hand Monday night, say the development application is too dense and that a smaller, scaled-back residential building would be more suitable. Residents also contend the application is too much of a variance from the Official Community Plan.

The public hearing will start at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the North Delta Recreation Centre.

• Oct. 31, 8:26 p.m., Gilchrist Drive: Emergency Health Services requested police attendance. Youths had called for assistance as they were concerned for the well-being of an intoxicated teen. EHS

medically cleared teen and police transported him home and released him to the care of his father. No further police involvement beyond speaking to teens.

• Oct. 31, 8:19 p.m., Dennison Park: Police responded to a complaint of teenagers lighting fireworks at park. Police spoke with teenagers in the area, and stayed until the teens dispersed.

• Nov. 1, 2 a.m., 600block of Bluegrouse Place:

Police were called to a loud party where 12 to 15 youths were lighting fireworks and generally being loud. As police waited for the crowd to disperse, multiple attendees continued to yell and heckle police. A bylaw ticket was written but the homeowner refused to come to the door to accept it. The ticket was to be served the next morning.

Complainant reported an attempted fraud through her business. She was contacted by a person hoping to pay for lessons.

A price was agreed, but the person provided an overpayment of $4,000 into the complainant’s account.

Complainant believed the money had cleared until she was notified it was fraudulent. Complainant fortunately did not lose any money, and reported the incident for information purposes only.

• Oct. 27, 7:41 p.m., 4800-block of 57th Street: Officers were conducting patrols in Ladner when they noticed a vehicle driving extremely slowly on Ferry Road. A traffic stop was initiated and the driver emitted a strong odour of liquor. A breath sample was taken in which the driver failed. Another sample was provided to which the driver failed again. An immediate roadside prohibition was served to the driver and his vehicle was towed away.

• Oct. 28, 8:20 a.m., 7100-block of Vantage Way: Police were called to a theft of wheels from a truck. The approximate value of the stolen wheels was $3,000.

• Oct. 30, 12:30 a.m., 4400-block of Dawn Drive: Police were called to a report of a stolen vehicle.

The owner parked the vehicle in his driveway with the doors unlocked and the key still in the ignition. The next morning he noticed the vehicle gone along with two bags, his driver’s licence and bank cards. The owner’s credit card company notified him that three failed attempts were made using his cards at a local conve-

nience store.

• Oct. 31, 6:30 p.m., 5100-block of 56th Street: Police were called to a report that the urinals and toilet in the washroom of a park were damaged. Police attended and it was determined the washroom may have been damaged due to firecrackers. Spray paint was also seen on the bathroom walls and toilets. The total damage to the washroom was approximately $2,000.

• Oct. 31, Ladner: Multiple calls were made in Ladner on Halloween night regarding groups of youth kicking fence panels and standing on parked vehicles along with causing disturbances. Police were kept busy attending these type of mischief calls while confiscating fireworks and liquor from youth.

• Oct. 31, 10 p.m., 4600block of 45th Avenue: Police were called to a report of a stolen vehicle.

The registered owner had parked the truck on the street and it was gone overnight. There was no broken glass or debris on the ground where the truck was parked. The registered owner still had her keys.

• Nov. 1, 9:34 a.m., 45th Avenue and Arthur Drive: Police observed a vehicle driving with a broken taillight swerving in lanes. A traffic stop was initiated in which the driver was extremely slow to stop. An odour of liquor was detected on the driver’s breath along with bloodshot eyes.

The driver took a breath sample to which he did not pass. A second test was initiated where the driver again did not pass.

An immediate roadside prohibition was served to the driver and his vehicle was towed.

Man facing charges of criminal harassment

A Delta man is facing criminal harassment charges after a series of events that took place in South Delta.

Troy Fulton, 40, of no fixed address, is charged with two counts of criminal harassment and one count of break and enter and theft. He has been remanded in custody and is next due to appear in court today.

According to Delta police, the man is alleged to have engaged in harass-

ing behaviours towards a woman and her family members. The harassment consisted of multiple aspects, including unwanted communications, watching and attending residences.

“Delta police has been investigating this matter since August 2019, and were concerned regarding the pattern of alleged behaviour,” said Delta Police Department spokesperson Cris Leykauf in a news release.

Delta officers are disciplined after four misconduct investigations

Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner releases report IAN JACQUES

The Delta police had 25 registered complaints against officers last year that led to four investigations, according to the annual report released by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner.

The report provides an overview of misconduct investigations involving municipal police officers in B.C. Three officers were dismissed during the period covered by the report (none from Delta), while other penalties ranged from verbal warnings to suspension without pay and demotion.

“Incidents of misconduct by municipal police officers in British Columbia remain a small fraction of the many interactions between the police and the public every day,” said police complaint commissioner Clayton Pecknold. “However, police officers are provided with extraordinary powers over citizens and

our democratic principles demand that they be accountable for the use of those powers to an impartial body fully independent of governments and the police themselves.”

The four investigations in Delta included a member using a department computer system to check on an extended family member who could potentially have gang associations. Two cases involved the unintentional dis-

charge of firearms, while the fourth was due to inappropriate language being used by some officers on a computer system inside department vehicles.

Chief Neil Dubord said in all four cases the officers involved received various disciplinary measures consistent with Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner guidelines.

“We are thrilled, number one, that we are able to work with the Office

of the Police Complaints Commission because they are that independent body,” said Dubord. “I do believe that as a police agency we are as transparent as we can be in providing the public with as much information as we can around the conduct and professionalism of our officers and that is an important part of us keeping the trust.”

From April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, there were 1,326 files opened by the OPCC involving 14 police agencies. This marks a 15 per cent increase from the 2017/18 reporting period.

Of those files opened, 403 related to reported injuries to persons as a result of police actions, which represented a 36 per cent increase from 2017/18.

Complaints from the public were down seven per cent to 487. The rate of complaints from the public about municipal police conduct has remained relatively stable the past five years, the annual report notes.

After a week of witness testimony, a South Delta manslaughter trial has been adjourned.

Franco Douglas Sarra, a graduate of South Delta Secondary now living in Burnaby, is facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of 53-year-old Russ Armfelt.

Armfelt was located unconscious early in the morning of Dec. 11, 2016 outside the Rose & Crown Pub in Tsawwassen following what the Crown has called a consensual fist fight.

Last week, Crown

called nine civilian witnesses to the stand who provided testimony about the night in question and observations of the altercation outside the pub that led to Armfelt’s death.

The case was adjourned due to the unavailability of a key Crown witness. A forensic pathologist is unable to testify as he is recovering from a recent surgical procedure.

Crown and lawyers for the defence were scheduled to appear in New Westminster Supreme Court today to decide on a date when the trial would resume.

Police nab 10 impaired drivers Delta police have issued a reminder to the public about the perils of drinking and driving after a busy weekend which saw 10 suspected impaired drivers stopped by police.

“We’re troubled to share that Delta police stopped 10 impaired drivers from Friday through Sunday this weekend,” said DPD in a post on its Facebook page Tuesday morning.

“Half failed or refused to blow, resulting in the drivers being given 90-day driving prohibitions and 30-day vehicle impoundments.”

In one incident, a driver thought it might be a good idea to ditch his vehicle just over the line in Surrey, and run from police.

He’s now also under investigation for obstruction.

ith all the recent discussion about an eightlane tunnel, including last week’s endorsement of the idea by the Metro Vancouver board, you’d think a new Fraser River crossing is getting tantalizingly close. If only that was the reality.

There’s definitely work taking place on the file, but when that will amount to anything, and how much of a benefit it will ultimately be for commuters, are two questions that are still very much up in the air at this point.

Although federal candidates fell over themselves to offer financial support during last month’s campaign and regional politicians are adamant their voices be heard, there’s no getting around the fact this is a provincial issue — and that’s a problem because the provincial government is on a timeline all its own.

Despite killing the previous Liberal government’s 10-lane bridge project more than two years ago, we’re still a year away from the NDP government coming up with a business case for its preferred option. Once that choice is finalized, it will be on to a lengthy environmental review followed by an even lengthier construction period.

The review is pegged at three years, which will undoubtedly take longer, and the five years earmarked for construction is more than likely a best case scenario, so it’s difficult to see a new crossing opening any time before 2030, which might be just fine for the NDP. Perhaps I’m being cynical here, but by bogging down a tunnel replacement in a prolonged environmental review, the government can say it’s moving forward with a new crossing without having to expend any serious dollars.

With a number of expensive transportation and hospital projects already on the books, it’s not a stretch to think that Victoria wouldn’t mind holding off putting shovels in the ground.

Too much of a conspiracy theory?

Possibly, but how do you explain taking up almost an entire four-year term just to come up with a crossing option, particularly given the voluminous study that has already been done on the issue? I guess it could be chalked up to thoroughness, although disinterest and incompetence also come to mind.

There’s definitely light at the end of the tunnel, but it would be nice if it was a little brighter.

Remembering the civilians who served their country

T

en thousand military planes were flown from Canada to Britain during the Second World War. Civilian pilots, many of them women, were paid $500 to $1,000 to deliver these planes over the worn torn Atlantic, with 20 per cent dying on route.

There were firefighters, doctors, nurses and “Rosie Riveters” working at the front and in the war factories here at home. My father was one of these Canadian civilians who contributed to the war effort and I would like to honour him and the others in this Remembrance Day column.

In a special to the Globe and Mail on dad’s death in 2004, Tom Hawthorn wrote a detailed obituary saying, “Don Hings was a selftaught electronics wizard who modified his two-way radio into the walkie-talkie that saved the lives of untold Allied soldiers in the Second World war. A Toronto newspaper’s headline captured the awe: ‘Miraculous walkie-talkie like quarterback to army’. To radio men it is a ‘midget miracle… A tiny but tough combined broadcasting and receiving set, easier to operate then a hand-telephone set, light but tough enough for paratroopers to take along in aerial assaults on enemy airfields, versatile enough so, in combination, they become a military network of broadcasting and receiving stations for attacking troops’.”

Dad used a Dictaphone for his reports and correspondence when I worked as his secretary in the 1960s. He also dictated stories of his adventures, which I transcribed.

Here is a small excerpt from his War Stories: “On the British Home Front – 1941: On the train going to London a large group of Navy Sailors squeezed in with an assortment of passengers.

They were mostly common Naval Seamen, youngsters who had been in a naval skirmish and their cockney banter was hard to follow. They apparently were on a leave home authorized by their medic after they had spent time in the sea.

“One said to another, ‘I thought I was goin’ to bloody well freeze and I kep’ wavin’ so som’un might see me. I figured I was fish chuck.

I don’ know if the ol’ place still has a roof on it’. Then one leaned over and said, ‘The birds will be

there’, and they all laughed and slapped each other while cigarettes were handed around.

“I checked in at Canadian Military Headquarters at Canada House. Upon being escorted to my room I noticed a large bomb hole existed where the neighbouring room should have been, but I was too weary to care (after a 22-hour flight) and was soon asleep.”

Dad’s contribution to the war effort was major, and despite being made a lifetime honourary member of the Canadian Signal Corp, he did not qualify for any veterans’ benefits. He even had to sue the government for the rights to his patent in the case of Hings versus the King, which he won.

The settlement was $5,000, which only covered his legal fees. No matter, he remained patriotic and continued his life of invention, acquiring over 50 patents in electronics and geophysics.

Here’s a gigantic thank you to all the civilians who contributed their blood, sweat and tears, and many, their lives.

While we remember and honour the sacrifices of our uniformed soldiers let us also not forget the huge contribution made by civilians.

‘Ignorance and greed’ plunging Canada into backwater status

Editor: Approximately two weeks after the 2019 federal election, the political map of Canada reveals a country much divided along lines that ought never to appear — ignorance and greed versus a deep-seated concern for the country and its future.

The ignorance — denotation not connotation — is paramount in the thinking of those whose see government as the sole source of all and coupled with the aforementioned greed — the “me” crowd, tend to create a community that fails to see reality.

Those who view Canada from the perspective of a country teetering on the threshold of catastrophe,

view reality and know that another period of such unbridled incompetence as the past four years, will — not might, but will — cause Canada to become the Italy or Venezuela of North America.

In all my years since I first voted in a federal election — 1953 — the past four years under the most corrupt and incompetent Liberal Party government Canadians have had to endure has caused me to have serious concerns about the care Canadians have for the future of Canada.

The poll-by-poll results reveal that there exists a majority of Deltans who see nothing wrong in each having an obligation to

carry a daily growing debt that amounts to $18,700 per person.

Only fools allow themselves to be suckered into such precarious financial situations, and only doom and gloom await at the end of the line.

It is time to wake from the Liberal-induced slumber and see Canada as a country of worth and not as a personal bucket of gold at the end of a fairy rainbow.

The daily debt is growing at an alarming rate and Ottawa — which created the entire mess through its incompetence — appears not to have any idea of how to stop the bleeding and save the country.

Tunnel excavation digs up questions

Editor: I have been in the construction business moving dirt and have had a hand in constructing just about everything imaginable with dirt.

I don’t know everything, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve got a question for all the people that oppose a bridge: Do you have any idea of the

quantity of material from the excavation and the environmental tests for hydrocarbons?

These will need to be addressed.

Where do we put all the material if free of any contaminants and what if it is contaminated?

Now these hydrocarbons may be natural, but when released into the

atmosphere they can possibly contribute to the socalled man-made climate changing catastrophic event wave that everyone is riding.

The bridge abutments can be constructed from dredging material and high-rise excavations which already have environmental approval.

Auxiliary thrift shop goes the extra mile

Editor: I am writing to express my thanks for the extraordinary kindness shown to us recently at the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop.

My 11-year-old grandson found a treasure there – a well-used air hockey game. However, in setting it up at home, he

discovered a missing cord for the game to function optimally. We brought this dilemma back to the thrift shop for consultation.

Not only did Jim give Jakob clear advice, he spent enough time with him to teach, to search and to find the perfect electrical cord that fit.

Editor: Re: MAiD driving wedge in Delta Hospice, Oct. 31 I have many issues with the article. Was the article to be about issues at Delta Hospice or the contentious issue of MAiD? I’m not sure where the reporter got his information or how he tied it into the AGM on Oct. 22. His statements are false.

MAiD was not part of the agenda and was never discussed by any speaker from the floor, the board of directors or candidates.

MAiD was the topic of a previous AGM wherein the board had extensively polled the residents of Delta, Delta Hospice staff, board members and volunteers. Results were that MAID would continue to not be performed at Delta Hospice. It is my understanding that no further action has been taken, nor

will it be, unless directed

by Fraser Health.

To be blunt, none of the articles regarding the issues at Delta Hospice should have been made public. They are the result of the board’s termination of the executive director. Every company, organization and society goes through administrative changes, which are required for any business to grow and flourish.

After many years, that change has come to Delta Hospice. It is time for change. Unfortunately, the innuendos, name calling and bullying is what the media is reporting.

The bottom line is certain members are not making the welfare of the hospice a priority, but rather making it a personal grievance.

It was accurate to report on the letter from the acting executive director

outlining inconsistencies in the handling of the operation in the past and that many staff and volunteers await the outcome to assess their continued involvement with Delta Hospice. We became staff and volunteers because we believe in our hospice and the care, support and services we provide to the most vulnerable of our Delta residents.

I ask members to remember what the hospice has done for our community and to come to the AGM with its growth and sustainability in mind. It will not flourish under the old ways.

Please put aside the misguided and misinformation you have received and remember that MAiD is not an issue now or in foreseeable future.

Macey deserves better treatment

Editor: What is going on at Delta Hospice? Founder Nancy Macey’s legacy is being trampled into the ground by a vindictive board of directors and a very insensitive acting executive director.

The issue of MAiD has introduced a new element into the running of the hospice which is at odds with the founder’s beliefs.

Instead of dealing with this divisive issue in a decent and constructive manner, the board decided to fire the founder. And this was done while Macey was on sick leave fighting her third bout of cancer.

To add insult to injury,

the acting executive director sent out a scathing letter to all society members criticizing some people’s reactions to the treatment of the founder and slamming the past performance of the running of the society.

Finally, the annual general meeting at Harris Barn, which is the responsibility of the board and executive director to manage, was as poorly run as possible with extra ballots popping up to spoil the outcome.

The solution is simple.

This board and current executive director have lost their moral authority to run the hospice for the

community of Delta. They must go. This board and executive director must also fess up to the fact the founder has been poorly treated and is owed a huge apology by all.

Personally, I’m in favour of MAiD but I didn’t found the hospice so my opinion on this matter is irrelevant but Macey’s opinion is most relevant.

Furthermore, I urge all citizens of Delta to call Delta councillors and the mayor’s office to consider renaming Delta Hospice the Nancy Macey Hospice to honour her huge contribution to the citizens of Delta.

Ladner Bottle Depot among sites accepting clothing for recycling Giving new life to your old or unwanted clothing is now possible at more Return-It locations throughout B.C., including the Ladner Bottle Depot.

Based on the success of a pilot project launched earlier this year, the clothing recycling initiative has been expanded from 13 to 32 depot locations in the region.

“The average adult throws out about 81 pounds of clothing and other textiles every year,” said Allen Langdon, president and CEO of Return-

It. “In Metro Vancouver alone, 40,000 tonnes of textiles end up in the landfill annually, making up approximately five per cent of the region’s municipal solid waste.

Those numbers provide a clear rationale for our new expanded program.”

During the last seven months, Return-It collected 1,640 bags of textiles — weighing over 26 metric tonnes — to help breathe new life into old garments.

Residents now have a permanent option to drop off used clothing, shoes

and household textiles.

Examples of accepted items include: • Clothing — Shirts, coats, pants, dresses, shorts and children’s clothes • Textiles — Sheets, towels, curtains, drapes, blankets, linens • Footwear — Shoes (all types), boots, slippers Return-It has partnered with Bank & Vogue — one of the largest traders of used clothing in North America — to pursue a shared mandate of diverting waste from landfill.

Items collected through the program are distributed to re-use organizations within Western Canada.

“Most of us have unused or unloved clothing taking up space at home,” added Langdon.

“Now, more B.C. residents can conveniently recycle textiles while they’re returning refundable beverage containers and other items. Given the positive feedback from the pilot, I’m optimistic we’ll be able to continue to expand the program across the province.”

It was a real talk with a real message.

Delta Real Talk held an evening of dialogue on the overdose crisis and naloxone training at Harris Barn in Ladner last Wednesday night.

The evening, held in partnership with the Delta Community Action Table on Overdose Response and funded

by Fraser Health, featured a panel discussion that included Guy Felicella a former addict turned advocate, Julie Cochrane, an advocate from Momstoptheharm, public health nurse Kim Ghilarducci and Delta police officer Ryan Hall.

The panelists shared real-life stories and experiences about how the overdose crisis continues to take lives from our communities.

According to statistics shown during the opening portion of the forum, 72 per cent of overdoses in B.C. are happening in private residences, and

four out of five victims are men. The overdose crisis has taken lawyers, doctors, teachers, moms, dads, siblings and is not just a problem amongst those who are down on their luck, homeless or who have fallen on hard times.

“People often think this is something happening on the streets and it definitely is, but we are looking at people dying who are using in their homes,” said Ghilarducci. “This is a crisis that is everywhere and affects us all.”

Felicella shared his story of addiction, relapse and how he ended up on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. He now has a loving family and has made it his mission to work with communities and governments to find ways to overcome the drug crisis.

“We didn’t start this drug crisis, but we can change that,” he said. “I have two beautiful kids and I don’t want to leave this with them. We need to end the stigma around this and realize that this is not a Downtown Eastside

problem, it’s a problem in all our communities.

It’s a problem in Delta, Tsawwassen and Ladner.”

Cochrane shared the story of losing her stepson to a drug addiction and her family’s struggle to cope with the loss.

Arianna Wingfield, project coordinator for the Delta Community Action Table on Overdose Response, said the event and one held in September in North Delta are intended to start the dialogue about substance use and to get vital information into the hands of community members.

“This crisis is complex, layered and by no means do we think one event will solve everything. However, it’s all about starting the conversation,” she said.

“We acknowledge that everyone walking into the room comes with different experience with this topic — and we love when there is open dialogue from different perspectives — that’s how we learn, and connect. We need to work together for this crisis to end.

“I was pleased that people were willing to share their experiences last night. If one person showed up and was able to feel more educated about the event, then we are happy. Others sharing that they use substances and have felt hidden for years, and felt dignified last night, so for us, that is a huge success.”

She said more events are planned, including one on Dec. 7 that will be geared to parents/caregivers who want to learn how to talk with their child/ teen about substance use.

“We will have parents with lived experience and counsellors speaking to the topic,” said Wingfield.

“We will also have practical skills and time for practice.”

She said finding ways to end the overdose crisis can be as simple as keeping the conversation going.

“Talk to your family and friends, just start the dialogue,” she said.

Highway sign to generate $450,000 annually for Delta SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s an innovative entrepreneurial opportunity for the city.

That’s how Coun. Dylan Kruger recently described Delta council’s endorsement of a staff recommendation to install a highway digital adverting sign.

Still requiring provincial government approval, the lease deal would see a sign board installed at the city’s

works yard on Nordel Way. “What I see here is an immense benefit for the city that should be taken very seriously. It is an opportunity for sustained funding for a 25-year period in the area of $450,000 that can go towards some sort of field maintenance or other parks and rec opportunities or opportunities to reinvest in the community.

“This is money that can go into our com-

munity that doesn’t have to involve Delta raising taxes, drawing on our tax base. I really believe in innovative entrepreneurial opportunities for cities to take advantage of to raise funds,” said Kruger.

A staff report notes that in addition to potential revenue from lease payments of approximately $450,000 per year, for a total of $14.4 million over a 25-year term, the proposed sign would also

provide dedicated time to display community messaging, including, but not limited to, amber alerts, community events and notices.

The city recently held a public consultation on the proposal, which included newspaper and online advertisements seeking feedback as well as sending a letter to approximately 600 surrounding properties and residents.

The report notes a total

of 54 responses were received with all respondents in opposition. The majority focused on concerns over driver safety, including distracted driving.

Coun. Lois Jackson said she can’t believe the city would be moving ahead despite 100 per cent opposition.

Noting the response rate was extremely low, Kruger countered it’s important to make decisions backed by

evidence.

The company hoping to enter a lease with Delta provided a study produced for the City of Toronto that found no evidence such signs had any impacts on road safety. The Delta staff report adds the province has approved several similar digital billboards in other municipalities.

Disney classic set for Genesis Frozen Jr. raises the curtain on fifth season for Delta Youth Theatre IAN JACQUES

Delta will soon be welcoming the beloved characters of Anna, Elsa and Olaf to the stage courtesy of the Delta Youth Theatre.

The young people’s pre-professional theatre company kicks off its fifth season with its fall run of Disney’s Frozen Jr. Performances will take place from Nov. 19 to Dec. 8 at Genesis Theatre in Ladner.

Next spring the theatre group will stage The Music Man Jr. from April 29 to May 3.

“We are excited to be offering two incredibly antithetical shows to our performers and our audiences,” said company codirector Tony Barton. “The Music Man and Frozen are so completely different in terms of style, era, genre and storytelling.”

Barton and co-director Tracy Neff are thrilled to be one of the first companies in the Lower Mainland to produce Frozen, Jr., a modern classic from the Disney repertoire that is adored by millions of young fans who know every note and nuance of their favourite characters.

It will feature dazzling song and dance num-

bers like Do You Want to Build a Snowman, Love is an Open Door and Let it Go. Delta Youth Theatre has produced two shows per season since its first production of Sondhiem’s Into The Woods, Jr. in 2015 with an all-Delta student cast. This year the company’s four casts also include young performers from Langley, Richmond and Surrey.

“We are big believers in process and education,” said Neff, who pursued her own love of musical theatre at the Boston Conservatory of Music where she received her BFA. Barton, who has his BA in music education from Illinois State University and his MA in Opera from Las Vegas University, backs that up.

“Everyone wants to be in a show, but the students who actually want to learn how to take direction and to gain skills that they can bring to the table are the students we want to work with the most,” he said.

This year the company has retained professional performers Jordan Field and Emma Dotto to head up musical theatre development classes. Both have performed with Theatre Under The Stars and Dotto choreographed Delta Youth Theatre’s Mary Poppins, Jr. stand-out number Step In Time last season.

Wander Inn Café getting into the holiday spirit The Wander Inn Café will be welcoming three fabulous local singers when it presents A Christmas Show next weekend in Ladner.

Liette Desnoyers, Christine Magee and Charmaine Levan will perform at Lighthouse Church on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Desnoyers, a Grade 12 student at South Delta Secondary, has been studying and sharing her love of music for seven years. She takes private lessons and is in the school concert and jazz choirs.

Desnoyers won Delta’s Got Talent and recently recorded her first CD. She loves performing with her dad, Allen Desnoyers, and will be accompanied by

him at the performance.

Magee has been singing and playing piano for most of her life. She is a GMA Covenant Award-winning singer/songwriter/pianist and is in the process of co-producing her second album of original songs at Saga Studios in Vancouver.

Earlier this year, Magee was a semi-finalist in the world-wide “Song of the Year” songwriting contest for her original song Crimson Robe. She’s the worship leader in music at St. Andrew’s Church in Delta and teaches piano, voice and guitar from her private Tsawwassen studio.

Levan has been singing for most of her life.

At age four, as part of a children’s Catholic choir, she had an opportunity to sing a solo for Pope John

Paul 11 in the papal choir of 1984 in Ontario. Later she sang lead for an R&B /Caribbean band called The Rhythmaires.

Levan’s most recent accomplishment is becoming one of the leads in a 100-female barbershop chorus called Lions Gate Chorus and is one of the singers in her own barbershop quartet called Cascadence.

The South Delta singers will delight the audience with traditional and seasonal songs of Christmas at the family-friendly event.

Literary fiction author Dora Dueck is holding a pair of events this weekend in Tsawwassen in support of her fourth book, All That Belongs.

She will be signing books at Albany Books on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. then on Sunday, Nov. 10 will be hosting a reading/ celebration from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Blenz Coffee.

Dueck is an author of four books as well as stories, essays and articles in a variety of journals.

Her novel This Hidden Thing won the McNally Robinson Book of the Year award at the Manitoba Book Awards in 2011 and was shortlisted for the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction.

Her collection of short fiction What You Get at Home won the High Plains Award for short stories in 2013, while in 2014 her novella Mask won The Malahat Review’s novella contest.

Dueck grew up in a

Mennonite community in Alberta, and lived in Winnipeg for nearly 40 years. About three years ago, she and her husband re-located to Delta for family reasons.

Fresh off the launch of her new Roxi the Rescue Dog children’s book series, Tsawwassen author Carolyn Drew and husband Graeme are heading to Thailand next week with plans to visit, volunteer and deliver a ton of bananas to elephant sanctuaries.

Drew’s Roxi the Rescue Dog Helps the Elephants (available on Amazon) raises awareness of animals used for entertainment, specifically elephants used for riding, trekking and performing in the tourism industry.

One dollar from every book sold will go towards their Bucks for Bananas campaign.

“Elephants eat a lot of bananas,” said Drew. “Our Bucks for Bananas campaign is to raise enough money for a ton (907 kilograms) of bananas that we will personally deliver to ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand. The goal of the books, along with

film Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story was filmed.

Drew held a screening of the film when she launched her books last month in Tsawwassen.

“The reaction, especially to the launch, where we showed the film, has been great. Quite a few people didn’t know what was going on in areas where elephants are used for riding and for tourism,” she said. “The chicken book, which was the first book released, I had someone come up to me who said that now when I go buy eggs I take a double look at the label, so I’m like, great.

Delta Street parade to march to Memorial cenotaph for service The Royal Canadian Legion branch in Ladner will once again host the South Delta Remembrance Day parade and service.

The parade steps off from the Legion on Delta Street at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 and will

march to the cenotaph at Memorial Park for the 10:45 a.m. ceremony.

The ceremony starts when all the parade participants have arrived.

When the ceremony is over, they will march back to the Legion where there will be another small cer-

emony with speeches from local dignitaries.

Following that, the Legion will be open to the public serving up great food and drink from the kitchen and bar as well as musical entertainment from Steel Rail with Rick Leather.

To honour those who have served, Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held at the Cenotaph in Ladner Memorial Park and at the Social Heart Plaza in North Delta.

The Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir and the Band of the 15th Field Regiment RCA will combine once again to perform a concert in Tsawwassen.

A Concert to Remember: With Glowing Hearts will be presented on Monday, Nov. 11 at 2:30 p.m. at the South Delta Baptist Church.

Both the choir and band will perform their own separate presentations,

but the highlight will no doubt be when the two groups present a selection of songs together.

Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir is one of the largest male choirs in Canada and the Band of the 15th Field Regiment RCA is a 45-member brass and reed band that is made up entirely of reservists, trained both as musicians and soldiers.

The program is

designed to please audiences of all ages and will include favourite melodies from the war years, folk songs from the United Kingdom and America, and music from the golden age of cinema.

Tsawwassen Legion is set to host afternoon ceremony

The Tsawwassen Legion is inviting the public to recognize and honour our veterans on Remembrance Day. Legion president Bill Belsey said members will be participating in the service to be held in Ladner, but will also be holding their own starting at 1 p.m. at the Legion branch locat-

ed in Century Square.

“The ceremony will take about an hour and is very similar to what Ladner or any other Legion does,” he said.

“It is open to all our members and of course all of the public to attend.

The very last thing we do is invite first our veterans and then dignitaries to

come to the front and pin a poppy on a large flag we have. After the ceremony there will be food and drinks available and we usually go until 6 or 7 p.m. at night.”

He said the Delta Police Pipe Band will also be on hand and will put on a 15to 20-minute performance in the afternoon.

Delta Music Makers to present a Concert of Remembrance

The Delta Music Makers are staging a multi-media Concert of Remembrance this weekend in Tsawwassen.

The bi-annual performance is set for Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. at KinVillage Community Centre.

“This will be our eighth time, but we do it every second year,” said Music Makers conductor Curt Jantzen. “It’s quite the show performing and then we have the big screen in the background with all the images relating to Remembrance Day, which reflect the music that we

play.”

Jantzen said the show will include lighthearted, nostalgic music in the first half, while the second half is more reflective, in the spirit of Remembrance Day, with a piper solo from a member of the Delta Police Pipe Band and audience singalong to old familiar songs.

He said assistant conductor Margaret Behenna will be conducting a good portion of the music, which allows Jantzen to go into the trumpet section to play beside his grandson.

The Delta Music Makers are a family affair with

seven married couples, two sisters, plus Jantzen’s own wife and two grandchildren in the band.

“Our band members feel very good about doing this performance and consider it to be one of the most important things we do in the course of the year,” he said.

“There will be solo features and lots of interesting music. The concert is open to the whole community. It will be a great show.”

Admission to the concert is by donation.

Refreshments will be served at intermission.

You who sleep beyond, and in Flanders Field, know that you are not forgotten.

It’s a simple yet poignant reminder of the sacrifices so many made for our country and freedom.

With the help of Tsawwassen Rotarians, students in South Delta Secondary’s Interact Club placed dozens of small white crosses on the lawn at the Kiwanis Longhouse in Tsawwassen last Friday to mark Remembrance Day. Bearing the names of fallen soldiers as well as a poppy for each, the crosses honour Delta veterans of past wars.

Grade 11 student Joelle Hamilton, who’s been in Interact for a couple of years because she enjoys giving back to her community, said people, especially in Delta, should never forget and take for granted the sacrifices of those who

served.

“We’ve never had to live in a time with such awful traumas happening. My great grandpa, when I was little, would tell me stories when he was in World War Two what the world was like then,” she said.

Classmate Devon Matson agreed, saying it’s important to inform youth, especially, of those who died in past conflicts.

“We live in such a privileged community, so a lot of kids don’t understand what’s happening across the world even now. By placing these crosses by the rec centre, which is a very kid friendly zone where a lot of kids come to hang out, they see this and can start conversations with their parents and others,” said Matson.

Legion president Bill Belsey said it’s comforting to see young people showing an interest in those who fought for our freedom.

“Seeing them put up these crosses, all of them bearing names of those who gave their life in the war, is so good to see.

They’re working hard to make sure they are remembered. That’s what remembrance is all about,” Belsey said.

Also at the installation, school board chair Laura Dixon, who’s a youth director for the Rotary, said having the Tsawwassen Legion involved is another way for young people to connect with veterans and helps them understand what such projects truly mean.

Interact clubs are Rotary International service clubs for young people ages 12 to 18.

In the summer of 1944, 18-year-old Margaret “Peg” Jones entered the lodge house inside the big gates of Bletchley Park. As she signed her name on the Official Secrets Act, she had no idea what awaited her in the hub of Britain’s Second World War codebreakers.

Standing with her fellow Women’s Royal Navy Service recruits (WRNS or Wrens), the gravity of the situation dawned. An officer gave a chilling warning: if they talked about Bletchley Park, they would be shot.

Born in 1926 in Liverpool, Peg was 13 years old when the Second World War began. She was just 16 the first time she attempted to sign-up to serve. However, the doctor in charge of her physical exam called her bluff and told her to come back when she was 18. Peg was undaunted; at 17.5 years old, she began to volunteer with the Wrens, counting down the “longest six months of my life” until she was officially old enough to serve.

Reporting for service, she joined the other Wrens in learning to march, salute and spend the night on benches during buzz bomb air raids. As training ended, Peg went to placement interviews.

Expecting a future as a cook, steward or ships’ crew, some of the interview questions surprised her. Do you like crosswords? “Yes, my brother Ken and I used to make them up for each other.

We loved making them.”

Do you ride a bicycle?

“Yes.” Do you like living in the country? “We’re Navy; I thought we would be going to the coast.”

This was the first hint her life was taking an unexpected turn.

She reported to Eastcote on the outskirts of London.

There Peg came face to face with the bombe.

The bombe was a codebreaking device developed

by Alan Turing and used

by British cryptologists to decipher secret messages sent from Axis-controlled Enigma machines.

“It was like a big cupboard; a sea of wires and disks turning on the front with letters on them,” Peg recalls.

With other Wrens, she learned the art of operating the bombe.

Now 93 and a resident at The Wexford in Tsawwassen, Peg Buchanan finds her name on the Codebreakers Wall at Bletchley Park.

“We were given a piece of paper with letters on it and were taught to put those letters onto disks that also had letters on them. It would run, we would wait until it stopped, and then write down where the letters were on a piece of paper and hand it to the IT ops.

She would take it away.”

Everything was shrouded in mystery.

“We were instructed to tell no one what we were doing. They said we would hear the word Enigma and we were to close our ears and never use it ourselves.

We had no idea what the name meant; we didn’t even know what the word meant.”

Secrecy was an essential part of life at Bletchley. In 1942, a security warning to all staff stated, “Do not talk at meals. Do not talk in the transport. Do not talk travelling. Do not talk in the billet. Do not talk by your own fireside. Be careful even in your hut.”

And then the war was over. Sir Winston Churchill proudly commended Bletchley Park as the secret weapon that won the war, calling it the “geese that laid the golden eggs but never cackled.” In October 1945, the ladies of A Watch tore the bombes apart, leaving nothing larger than two-inch long wires and piles of nuts and bolts.

Peg spent the next four years serving as a Wren at different Royal Navy air stations throughout England. In 1949, while working at RNAS Saint Merryn, Cornwall, she met Buck Buchanan, a handsome Brit with the Royal Canadian Navy who was there for training.

They married, and two weeks later, Peg Buchanan was on a plane bound for her new life in Ottawa, Canada. She stored the secrets of her time at Bletchley Park deep in a

memorial to the veterans who served at Bletchley.

Peg ran her fingers across the names printed on the bricks until she

proudly arrived at her own. It’s a brick that represents the role she played in an operation that changed the world.

vault in her mind protected by sheer force of will.

Thirty years later, in 1974, she and others who had worked at Bletchley received official permission to talk. She could finally tell Buck and her six children about her work as a code breaker. Buck was unfazed. Upon hearing her news he said, “I thought it might be something like that.”

When Buck retired from service, he and Peg and their six children moved to Ladner and fell in love with the west coast of Canada. Buck died in 2004 and in recent years Peg has enjoyed the social family-atmosphere of life at The Wexford, a seniors’ living community in Tsawwassen.

War bride brings story home for playwright

96-year-old arrived at Pier 21 after the war, same spot her husband had departed from IAN JACQUES

Ladner playwright Allen Desnoyers has travelled from coast to coast with his historical musical Pier 21, making it as far as Halifax where the story began.

Staging well over 100 shows has had a profound impact on the playwright, his cast and crew, but perhaps nothing has hit home more than a recent visit with 96-year-old Dutch war bride Aleyda (Piep) Campbell.

“We visited her just last week after some shows in Cochrane (Alberta) and she still gets emotional sharing what an indelible experience it was when the Canadians came to free their town of Oos from Nazi occupation,” Desnoyers told the Optimist.

“She remembered how a Canadian soldier handed them a loaf of bread and the family gathered around to stare at it for a long time while it sat on

the table. They hadn’t seen a full loaf for years.”

He said this was eight months before the end of the war, and she and her pianist brother decided to put on a concert for the troops.

Later, her family put on a Christmas dinner for three Canadians by saving their meat ration coupons for two months so the family could share a tiny roast beef with the soldiers, decorating the dining room with what little they could find.

“One of soldiers, Monty from Toronto, was so overwhelmed by the gesture, he put a picture of his family in front of his plate and openly wept at the Christmas dinner saying over and over, ‘Just like home, just like home,’” recalled Campbell.

These young men were barely in their 20s and a long way from Canada.

Aleyda’s future husband Colin was one of those men. She said she married one in a million.

“Like half a million

other soldiers, he was sent on a troopship departing from Pier 21 in Halifax to fight the Nazis, not knowing if he’d ever return,” said Desnoyers. “This year marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day and Colin was on Juno Beach that day before helping liberate the Netherlands.”

In his musical Desnoyers named the soldier and his Dutch war bride Colin and Aleyda to honour what they went through.

“They both returned to Canada after the war, arriving at Pier 21 a few months apart,” he said.

“She said Colin never really spoke about his experiences at Juno Beach, but when they visited there years later he needed to walk by himself for a while. What she remembered him saying was at the end of the day of that longest ‘Day of Days,’ he and the surviving Canadians gathered to count who was left. Two thousand and forty-eight Canadian soldiers are bur-

ied at Juno Beach.”

In the Pier 21 musical, Aleyda sings: “Who am I that strangers would give their lives for me?

That sailed away from here to set me free?

All the years of darkness battered and confined Now, I’m safe in Canada Its heroes left behind.”

Scents of the season can help set holiday mood

Holiday decor is as much about the sights and sounds as it is about the scents of the season.

Few things evoke the holiday spirit as much as the aroma of fresh evergreen or spicy cinnamon and cloves. Incorporating inviting aromas into holiday decor can make homes feel even more special.

Filling a home with fragrant decor takes a little ingenuity and planning.

Here are some ideas to incorporate the scents of the holiday season into your décor: • Use a real Christmas tree. An easy way to create a pine-like scent indoors is to select a real Christmas tree. Ask the tree lot which varieties are the most fragrant. If a fresh tree is not possible, fill a decorative basket with pine cones and evergreen boughs for

that woodsy appeal.

• Create a seasonal scented simmer. Take to the stove to make a homemade air infusion from ingredients in and around the house. Simmer pine branches, citrus peels, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and whatever else can be placed in a pot or slow cooker with water. The scents will permeate the house for hours if enough water is added to the mixture.

• Make holiday sachets.

Some of the same ingredients for the holiday simmer can be dried and sewn into sachets. Add ribbon and hang on real or artificial trees. Or tuck the pouches into various areas around the house.

• Make beeswax ornaments. Add scented oils to melted beeswax and pour into molds. Hang these creations as ornaments on trees or in other areas of

There are many advantages to hosting holiday gatherings. Hosts won’t have to travel during a notoriously busy time of year to take to the roads and sky. Hosts also won’t have to book hotel rooms or arrange for other accommodations, saving them money and time during a season that tends to be expensive and packed with social engagements.

As the day of their holiday parties draws near, hosts can take several steps to make the day of the party easier, allowing them to spend more time with their family and friends.

• Choose the right menu. The right menu can go a long way toward making hosting easier

Various factors, such as food allergies and the size of the guest list, must be considered when planning a holiday menu.

As hosts scour cookbooks for the right foods, look for recipes that don’t require everything to be done on the day of the party. Prep work tends to take as much, if not more, time as cooking the foods.

About two weeks before the party, sit down and make a thorough list of everything you expect to need. Include food, beverages, dining needs (i.e., plates and silverware) and entertainment. A couple of weeks before the party, purchase items that won’t spoil, such as beverages like water, soda, wine, and beer and extra utensils if necessary. Doing so saves time during your grocery store trip the week of the party.

Seven strategies for hosts

Many people enjoy opening their homes to friends and family during the holiday season. Here are seven strategies hosts can use to help guests feel at home: 1. Consider the details. Does your guest like chocolate-covered almonds? Does he or she prefer a certain genre of music? Take note of the specific details that make the guest tick, and then incorporate them into your entertaining plans.

2. Ready the space.

Not everyone has a fullfledged guest room, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a welcoming and private retreat for guests. Turn a home office into an overnight area with a pull-out couch or even a dressedup air mattress.

3. Anticipate guests’ needs. Think like a concierge when hosting at home. Have extra toothbrushes, antiperspirant, mouthwash and a phone charger at the ready. Is your guest a reader? Keep a few selections nearby or a book of puzzles so they can stay busy during their

downtime.

4. Keep dietary needs in mind. Guests have different palates and preferences, but some may have serious food allergies as well. Ask in advance if any guests have food allergies so you can ensure meals are not just delicious, but also safe and healthy.

5. Keep pets at bay.

Guests may not be as enamored with pets as their hosts. If you know a guest has an allergy or an aversion to pets, keep the animals away as much as possible.

6. Freshen the home.

Take inventory of your home in its current state and make minor improvements. Add some interior lighting, clean the bathrooms, create extra seating and freshen up with some flowers to make for a welcoming environment.

7. Prepare a special meal. Give guests a sensational meal they’re not likely to forget. This can mean indulging a little with sourced ingredients, home cooking and a good bottle of wine.

Nature-based playground opens at English Bluff Outdoor space redeveloped at Tsawwassen elementary IAN JACQUES

Three years of hard work, fundraising and community cooperation has resulted in a new playground at English Bluff Elementary.

Representatives from Delta School District and City of Delta joined with teachers, students and PAC members to open the playground with a ribbon cutting under sunny skies in Tsawwassen last Tuesday afternoon.

PAC chair Andrea Vance said the project is one of Delta School District’s first nature-based playgrounds.

“So that means we didn’t just take an old structure out and put a new one in and walk away with a shiny new toy, we really re-developed an entire outdoor play space,” Vance said. “It has elements for imagination for all ages, all abilities, all different styles of play. The whole idea is we created places that kids can use their imagination. It’s not here is a slide where you climb up and slide down, it’s what can you do with this using your imagination, creativity and utilizing the entire play space, how we can spread out the play and make it part of the school.”

She said the existing playground is still in place, but is on its last legs.

“It was estimated to have three to five years left, so we actually refurbished it as part of this project,” she said. “Hopefully we can get a few more years out of that structure.”

Vance said the PAC worked with the school, school district and the City of Delta to gain support for the initiative.

The overall project cost $138,000, of which the City of Delta matched PAC raised funds up to $45,000.

many other local businesses donated thousands of dollars or services.

“There was a lot of bake sales, carnivals and spella-thons,” said Vance. “For quite a few years most of the funds raised here went to the playground.

The students have been involved with this from day one and it’s still ongoing. It will almost never be finished and that is the beauty of what we have done here because it can evolve over the years. This today is less of an unveiling but more of a community coming together and recognizing what has been done, which is pretty special.”

Principal Michelle Smith said the playground is a result of a tremendous effort by the entire community.

“I’m very proud to be the principal of this school because this school is the kind of school that comes together in a spirit of community,” said Smith.

School board chair Laura Dixon said partnerships make projects like this possible.

“I have always viewed playgrounds as an extension of our classrooms,” said Dixon. “It’s where social learning takes place, where students learn through play how to be citizens, how to share and collaborate.

“This play space has a special vision to promote physical literacy and integration with the natural surroundings and has already brought many moments of joy for you all here at English Bluff.”

Members of the Point Roberts volunteer fire department will be rowing for a good cause next week.

Dubbed Operation Frankton, firefighters will have two rowing machines and row non-stop for 24 hours beginning at midnight on Nov. 11 until midnight on Nov. 12, all in an effort to raise money for service men and women suffering with PTSD. The fundraiser will take place at the fire hall (2030 Benson Rd.) and will stop for two minutes of silence at 11:11 a.m. during the

Veterans/Remembrance Day service which will be held at the fire hall.

“The goal of our campaign is to raise between $10,000 and $15,000, which we intend to split evenly between two charities that work closely with those suffering from PTSD and other service-related injuries,” said firefighter and event spokesperson James Pearson. “We have chosen the Honour House Society and the Wounded Warrior Project.”

During the 24-hour period, there will also be prizes donated from local businesses, snacks and refreshments as well as representatives from

Honour House Society who will be on hand to provide information about the society.

Pearson said there will be additional rowing machines so members of the public will be able to row in solidarity.

Donations can be made three ways: cash, cheque made out to the Point Roberts Volunteer Firefighters Charitable Society or online through a gofundme page.

Paridon Horticultural Ltd. has been presented with plaques for its ongoing support of the annual Christmas food hamper program run by Delta service clubs and Deltassist.

Paridon has been providing free cold storage for all the food donated for the Christmas hampers since 2001.

Deltassist and the service clubs of Delta would be hard pressed to store all of the food if it was not for Paridon. The space provided in East Delta is big enough to store all the food from October through December before it’s sorted and the hampers are assembled.

Not only does Paridon

provide storage space, it also allows service club members to use its equipment to move pallets of food.

On the Saturday before Christmas, all the hampers are ready for delivery so hundreds of service club volunteers descend on the Paridon warehouse to begin their deliveries.

The South Delta Sun Devils are headed to the BC AAA Boys Soccer Championships for the first time in eight years thanks to a dramatic win on Monday afternoon in Surrey.

The 10th ranked Sun Devils pulled out a thrilling 3-2 victory in penalty kicks over the No. 6 Fleetwood Park Dragons to advance to today’s title game of the inaugural South Fraser AAA Zone Championships.

South Delta will take on top ranked Panorama Ridge at Newton Athletic Park (2 p.m.) with both sides knowing they are headed to Burnaby later this month for the provincial showcase tourney.

Twice the Devils rallied from one goal deficits to send their semi-final match to extra time and relied on some outstanding goalkeeping from Simon Raderecht too.

Normally a midfielder for South Delta United’s U18 Gold team, the senior has showcased his athleticism during the Sun Devils’ post-season run.

He came up with a key penalty kick save in the opening half of last week’s 3-0 quarter-final win against North Surrey and was at it again on Monday.

The Dragons looked poised for victory when they were awarded a penalty with a couple of minutes remaining in regulation. However, Raderecht came up with a diving stop and two more point blank saves moments later to send the game into overtime.

had a chance to win on its fifth attempt but was turned back by Raderecht. Sudden death followed and the teams exchanged goals until he made back-to-back saves in the eighth and ninth round to end the drama.

“Simon won us that game,” said co-head coach Brent Sweeney. “We had some guys nicked up and feeling under the weather too so we weren’t at full strength. The two weeks off before provincials will do us a lot of good.”

The South Delta Sun Devils have at last broken through at Mercer Stadium and secured the Kushnir Boot rivalry trophy for the first time in three years. More importantly, they are Western Conference champions and headed to the provincial AAA quarterfinals in two weeks.

The top ranked Sun Devils capped a perfect 7-0-0 conference run (9-0-0 overall) with a 28-0 victory over the New West Hyacks (5-2-0) last Friday night. The result earns them a week’s rest and quarter-final date with Notre Dame or Abbotsford at B.C. Place Stadium on Nov. 16.

Since stepping up to the the AAA tier in 2013, South Delta had dropped three straight games at Mercer Stadium, including a 63-16 shellacking two years ago.

This time they were determined to write a different script, even with star quarterback Ben McDonald sidelined with a broken collarbone.

“The kids came to play. There is no doubt about that,” said head coach Ray Moon. “They were a little sketchy at the start but that

had to do with their nerves and getting comfortable with Hunter (Norman’s) cadence. “Once that happened, we really started to roll.”

Ample playing time this season has certainly benefitted Norman and he thrived in his first start at the senior varsity level.

The Grade 11 pivot passed for 185-yards — including 36 and nine-yard touchdown strikes to Evan Patterson and Evan Davies respectively.

“We knew they were going come after him and try to make him feel nervous. Hunter has a good arm and can make accurate throws so we wanted to get the ball out his hands,” added Moon.

South Delta dominated in all three facets of the game — including a blocked punt that was returned 26 yards for a major by Bennett Stoilen. Ethan Troniak rounded out the scoring on a

75-yard run.

There is plenty of work to do, but the path to the provincial championship game is certainly a favourable one for the Sun Devils with Vancouver College, Mt. Doug and Eastern Conference champion St. Thomas More all on the other side of the playoff bracket.

The coaching staff was disappointed to see only four players named to the Western AAA Conference All-Star Team when nine were nominated.

The team includes McDonald, Paterson, Troniak and Stoilen.

Second place Vancouver College led the way with seven selections while fourth place Mt. Doug had five.

The JV Sun Devils will “host” their opening round playoff game on today (2 p.m.) at Cloverdale Athletic Park against St. Thomas More.

A steady diet of tournament competition against quality opponents served the South Delta Sun Devils well at the inaugural South Fraser AAA Zone Field Hockey Championships.

The Sun Devils rolled to a pair of convincing victories to capture the title and secure a berth in next week’s provincial AAA championships in North Vancouver.

South Delta opened with a 5-0 win against Enver Creek and defeated Richmond’s McMath Wildcats by the same score in the final.

“We had played them in September and did not have a lot of problems against them, but we knew that while we were a better team and playing well, McMath would be better as well,” said longtime SDSS coach Neil McLennan. “They have a couple of dangerous players but our experience at the various tournaments had taught us valuable lessons in how to spot key players and adjust accordingly to manage them

on the field.

“The girls were pretty much flying from the start and never allowed McMath to get into their stride and by halftime it was 4-0. The second half was more controlled as we moved the ball around and just managed the pace of the game.”

McLennan knows the importance of tournament play for his girls, especially in preparation for provincials where the quality of opponents increases dramatically from zone playdowns.

South Delta headed to Victoria for the Bridgman Cup — considered the pinnacle mid-season tournament for high school girls field hockey each year.

The Sun Devils captured their pool group with a 3-0 record, highlighted by a 1-0 win over AA perennial powerhouse Crofton House.

They also defeated a pair of Victoria schools — Mt. Doug and Glen Lyon.

That set the stage for a quarterfinal match-up with Kelowna and a contrast of styles. The Owls’ direct approach and some missed defensive assignments resulted in a 2-0

lead. The Devils cut the deficit to one and missed a penalty stroke in the late going.

It was onto placement play where the girls dropped a close 2-1 decision to Little Flower Academy. A rematch with Crofton House followed and a sudden-death shootout win for seventh place thanks to some terrific goalkeeping from Sydney Rosler and goals from Tessa Everett, Elly Tilsley, Kayla Guraliuk, Campbell Brown and Natalie Anderson.

Next was the Golden Pumpkin Tournament in Surrey and roundrobin games against Argyle, Kelowna, Kitsilano and JL Crowe.

South Delta finished with an unbeaten 3-0-1 record — highlighted by an impressive 2-0 win over Kelowna.

“We were quite excited to play them again,” added McLennan. “It was an excellent game for us right from the start and we pretty much did not give Kelowna much of a chance. Girls played really well and some new tactics which they were keen to try to shut down whatever Kelowna had to offer on attack.”

Teams from both sides of the border will converge on the Ladner Leisure Centre and South Delta Recreation Centre over the Remembrance Day weekend for South Delta Minor Hockey Association’s 26th annual Tim Jardine Bantam Midget Showcase.

The 16-team tournament features eight teams battling in the two divisions — looking to reach Monday’s championship games.

Organizers have once again done an impressive job of attracting outof-town teams.

The host A1 Storm are joined in the Bantam Division by West Kootenay, North Zone Selects, Campbell River, Thompson Blazers, Wenatchee Wolves, Surrey Thunder and the Vancouver Thunderbirds.

The Midget Division features Wentachee, North Zone, Fernie

Academy, Northeast Trackers, Central Zone Rockets, North Shore Winter Club, Ridge Meadows Rustlers and the A1 Storm.

It was opposite ends of emotion for pair of field hockey standouts from Tsawwassen and their respective teams’ bid to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

A week after Mark Pearson helped the national men’s team pull off a dramatic comeback against Ireland to earn his third trip to the Olympic Games, Sara McManus came agonizingly close to joining him.

The 26-year-old defender was superb all weekend as the national women’s team also battled Ireland in Dublin for its first Olympic berth since 1992. The teams played to a scoreless draw on Saturday and did so again on Sunday — sending the twogame aggregate series to a shootout where each team has five attempts to score from 23 metres out and within eight seconds.

Canada seemed to be in full control of the best-of-five tiebreaker by scoring on its first three attempts — including McManus on a penalty stroke after captain Kate Wright was tripped up on her attempt.

With a 3-1 lead, all 15th ranked Canada needed was a goal or a save over the final two shooters to pull off the upset against the world’s eighth ranked team.

Instead, Irish goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran produced a pair of saves and teammates Beth Barr and Choe Watkins converted their attempts to send the shootout to sudden-death.

Ireland then completed the comeback on a goal from Roison Upton and McFerran making her third consecutive save to send the hosts to their first-ever Olympic Games.

McManus joined the senior national team when she was just 18 and is part of a veteran group that was chasing their Olympic dream even with little in the way of federal funding that resulted in raising money to help attend a qualifying tournament in Spain back in June.

The team also shifted its training base to Belgium to face better compe-

tition on a regular basis. The strategy paid off with a silver medal showing at this summer’s Pan Am Games, highlighted by wins over higher ranked United States and Chile. A loss to top five ranked Argentina in the gold medal game set the stage for the qualifier against Ireland.

The national men team’s dramatic victory in North Vancouver saw the hosts rally back from a 5-3 game one deficit, that included Scott Tupper sending the series to a shootout on a penalty stroke with no time remaining for a 3-1 victory. It then took an extra round of the shootout to cap the remarkable comeback.

Pearson, 32, has attended the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and in 2016 in Rio.

Approved Land Use Plan Amendments On October 29, 2019, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority board of directors approved amendments to the Land Use Plan for sites acquired by the port authority over the past year located in the City of Surrey and the City of Delta. Two sites in Surrey have been redesignated to the ‘Industrial’ designation, and two sites in Delta have been redesignated to the ‘Port Terminal’ designation. In addition to the sites in the Cities of Surrey and Delta, a site in the City of Vancouver has also been approved for redesignation.

It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our dad, Bill Chernoff, age 88. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Katie; brother, Harry; and sister, Ruby.

Survived by daughter, Janice (Lauris); son, Cliff; granddaughter, Tessa (Hector); and loving companion, Bonnie. Bill shared a fulfilling and happy life with his family and friends, always positive and cheerful. He will be greatly missed by all. We would like to express our gratitude to Delta’s Irene Thomas Hospice, where Dad spent his last week in peace and comfort. Celebration of Life for Bill will take place at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre at 2 pm on Friday, November 8, 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Delta Hospice Society.

Rollie passed away on Thursday, October 24th, surrounded by his family. He was born, raised, and lived out his life in his favourite place on earth, Delta.

Born to the Embree family, Rollie spent his early life farming. Later he moved briefly to Vancouver where he met his beloved wife of 57 years, Sharon.

Rollie went on to start his own successful company. He and Sharon had two daughters, Jacqueline and Jo−Mary (Grant).

Throughout his life, Rollie could be found boating, working on his property, breeding and racing horses, and enjoying his lively social life. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, children, and grandchildren (Zachary, Alexa−Rae, and Isaac), as well as all his family and friends. Rollie made an impression on everyone he met and was loved by so many in his community.

A celebration of his life will be held at the East Delta Hall November 16, 2019 at 1:30pm. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations can be made in memory of Roland Embree to the Delta Hospital Foundation Cancer Care.

Thomas Russell Hodgson, 96, died on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at Kin Village Care Home in Tsawwassen, following a brief battle with cancer.

CORDEIRO, May Lourdes May 14, 1960 − November 2, 2019 It is with profound sadness that the family of May Lourdes Cordeiro announces her passing on November 2nd, 2019. May will forever be remembered for her unwavering faith, quick wit, and love for family. May had a wonderful way of making those who came her way feel special and was especially devoted to the disenfranchised and those on the fringes of society.

May was born in Dar es Salam, Tanzania, on May 14th, 1960. She is survived by her sisters, Maura (Francisco), Merlyn (Oswaldo), Mavis (late Pralad), and Milena (Leslie); brother−in−law, Dileep; 12 nieces and nephews; two grandnieces; and one grandnephew. She is predeceased by her sister, Malvina; mother, Florrie; and father, Venancio.

A vigil service will be held on Friday, November 8th at 7:00 pm, followed by a funeral Mass on Saturday, November 9th at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Delta. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sacred Heart Church, Delta (Migrant Workers’ Ministry).

With great sadness, we announce that Marc passed away quietly on Wednesday, September 11th, 2019 at Delta View, Ladner, BC. Marc was 91.

Born In Montreal, PQ, to Hector Dussault and Edna Bergeron, Marc is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Eleanor Best; his stepdaughters, Ali Holt (Roger), Kitty McLeod (Dave), and Angela MacKenzie (Randy); his grandchildren, Jessica Best (Tom Clendening), Holly and Alec McLeod, and Derek (Amelia Levesque) and Lauren MacKenzie; his sisters, Nicole (Pierre Carreau) and Aliette Campbell; sisters−in−law, Yolande Dussault and Violette Thibert; and his many nieces and nephews. Marc was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Gaston and Jean−Claude Dussault; and his stepson, Richard Best.

Marc spent his youth in Montreal, playing junior hockey. He was also an avid skier. His varied career included selling cars, pro wrestling, and owning a restaurant.

In his forties, Marc moved to West Vancouver and became the chef at the Grouse Nest, the prestigious restaurant at the top of Grouse Mountain. While working there, Marc met Eleanor and they fell in love. Marc and Eleanor spent the next 44 years together, living in North Vancouver, before moving to Ladner, and finally settling in Tsawwassen − always with family close by.

Marc and Eleanor loved to travel, taking tours to Italy, France, the British Isles, Greece, Turkey, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Alaska. They also took a memorable cruise through the Panama Canal.

Closer to home, Qualicum Beach was their favourite holiday destination.

A lifetime member of the BC Chef’s Association, Marc took great pride in his profession and had a full career as a chef and restaurant owner. His Omelette au Broccoli was an award winner. On his retirement, he continued to cook for family and friends much to everyone’s delight.

Marc’s greatest love was his wife Eleanor and he was happiest with her at his side. He was a wonderful father and grandfather to his adopted family. Papa was always on hand to support at any sporting event. He was also a beloved uncle, spoiling his nieces and nephews at any opportunity.

We will all miss him deeply and cherish our memories of his unfailing good humour and constant loving presence.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Marc on December 21st at 1:00 pm in the Chapel at Deltaview Care Centre.

Russ, as he preferred to be known, was born June 25, 1923, in Ste. Walburg Saskatchewan to Thomas and Pearl Hodgson. a He married his life partner, Patricia LeFleur on September 12, 1946 and for 56 years they continued many adventures until Patricia passed in 2002.

Russ had explicitly asked for no service be held for him. In lieu of a service, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Russ’s name.

Russ will be missed by many family close and far, and all friends.
