Volunteers help Deltassist create annual Toy Depot at East Delta Hall IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
A flurry of activity took over the East Delta Hall earlier this month as volunteers eagerly unpacked toys for those in need. Members of the Delta Fire Department were on hand along with staff from CIBC, TNT Moving and Deltassist to prepare for the annual Toy Depot, which was open to needy families for three days. Bags of stuffed animals, boxes of puzzles, LEGO, train sets and Barbie dolls were piled high as far as the eye could see, while a collection of children’s
bikes sat in a separate area just waiting for an eager child on Christmas morning to take them for a spin. Colleen Danes, community services coordinator for Deltassist Family and Community Services, said it takes a huge effort to get the Toy Depot ready. “TNT supplied their moving truck for free, which is just awesome. We have a lot of our staff and other volunteers from the community who just said they could come by and give us a hand,” said Danes. “We have such an amazing community who work with us every year to make this happen.”
Danes said between 500 and 600 families registered this year for assistance. “This number is comparable from last year. It doesn’t seem to be up or down, I think we are breaking even,” she said. Families who registered for the Toy Depot all received a card in advance with a specific time they could come and shop. Shopping days took place Dec. 10 through 12. “It’s set up like a mall or toy store. Each family can shop for a large gift, medium gift and small gift. This can be books, puzzles, games, stuffies, clothing and PJs,” said Danes. “It’s
huge what this community does at Christmas. It’s like Toys R Us has moved into the East Delta Hall. This is my fourth year being a part of this and I’m just overwhelmed with the generosity every year.” John Burr, president of the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society, had 25 members on hand unpacking and loading the hall with donations. He said the firefighters look forward to this day every year. “We have been doing this since 2013,” said Burr. “To date we have probably donated close to $80,000 to the Christmas
programs. Everyone has fun with it. They enjoy this part of it. Not only is it a team thing, but they love helping out the kids and the families in Delta. We take a lot of pride in doing this.” Mayor George Harvie was also at the East Delta Hall during set up to bring greetings and thanks from Delta council and city staff to all the volunteers for their generosity. “When you look at all the volunteers here helping out and all the donations, this will make a huge difference for children and families this Christmas Day,” said Harvie.

Looking for a connection on Christmas Day? Missing family or friends? Then why not check out the fifth annual Jingle & Mingle community Christmas dinner in Ladner. Hosted and organized by Jeff, Shirley and TJ Brown, this year’s dinner will be in the hall at All Saints Anglican Church (4755 Arthur Dr.). Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and dinner is at 5 p.m. “We continue to pay it forward and extend an invitation to all for this free Christmas dinner to folks who are looking for a place to go and connect with others,” said Jeff. “This event is a wonderful way to create a fun-loving space for people who are new to our community, people who are alone on Christmas Day and or people who want to share and connect with others.” Besides the home-style Christmas dinner, there

will be live music from Alex Whitaker, who was on hand last year, as well as an opportunity to socialize with others in the community. The Browns encourage people to come early to play cards or board games. “This is event is truly in the spirit of community,” added Jeff. “In a world that is full of technology and we are all distracted all the time, how often do we get a chance to sit down and
enjoy the company of the people in the community? If people want to come out and volunteer as well, serve some food and then sit down and meet with people, chat, play some board games and just connect with people, really this is what we are looking for.” For more details or to volunteer, contact the Browns at 778-829-7296, 604-728-7070 or shirleybrown4920@gmail.com.

Service clubs deliver over 500 hampers
Annual program with Deltassist ensures every family in Delta has Christmas dinner IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Thanks to an army of volunteers and the generosity of Deltans, no one will go hungry this holiday season. The Paridon Horticultural Ltd. warehouse in East Delta has been a hub of activity the past two weeks as volunteers sorted and boxed hundreds of items for the annual food hamper campaign, an initiative of local service clubs and Deltassist. “It’s a two-week operation,” said Ladner Legion volunteer Bob Taggart, who spoke to the Optimist when they stopped by to visit the volunteers on Dec. 18. “We are in the home stretch now, but we still have a few more days to get everything ready.” More than 500 hampers were filled and delivered to needy families throughout the community by 300-plus volunteers last Saturday. Each food hamper contained canned goods,

pasta, cookies, candy canes, bread, root vegetables, fruit, cranberries and a turkey. “At any given time we have up to 30 volunteers representing all the service
groups with the Legion and the TOOB being the main two organizations,” Taggart said. “Everything pretty much is donated. The things we buy are the apples, oranges, cook-
ies, candy canes and the turkeys. We even get the boxes donated. The veggies we get donated by five local farmers.” Taggart said no one should go hungry, espe-
cially during the holidays. “I’ve been involved well over 30 years,” he said. “We are all with service clubs and we help in the community. The need is greater during the holi-
days, so it’s just what we do. We love doing this and we love helping people.” He said any leftover food will be donated to other area food banks, so nothing goes to waste. Many of the volunteers for the food hamper campaign also helped out the previous week picking up toys and dropping them off to be set up at the East Delta Hall for the Deltassist Toy Depot. Colleen Danes, community services coordinator at Deltassist, said it has once again been a huge effort by the community to make all the social services agency’s Christmas programs happen. “The generosity is amazing,” she said. “Almost every school in the district participated in food drives and some did food drives on their own and donated directly to the food bank. The community comes with food or toy donations or monetary donations, so that is huge. “Most of what goes into the hampers is from the community, which is amazing.”

Give the gift of life over holiday season Ladner family hopes that sharing story of son’s blood disorder inspires others to donate IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Dan and Robyn Yatchuk and their four-year-old son Khoen know all too well the importance of blood donation, so they’re calling on others to help over the holiday season. The Ladner family is sharing its story through Canadian Blood Services to encourage others to support Canada’s lifeline. Khoen was born with hereditary spherocytosis and had his first transfusion at three weeks old. Khoen has had seven transfusions so far to manage the blood disorder that causes his immune system to destroy his red blood cells. On Christmas Day last year he was showing signs of critical hemolysis and required a blood transfusion on Boxing Day. “Blood donations have meant everything to us,” said Robyn, who was on hand with Khoen at a blood donation clinic in Vancouver last week to thank supporters. “Without these transfu-

sions, I don’t even want to think about what could happen. It’s so important to us. His recovery is pretty
quick, almost immediate, when he receives the transfusions.” Robyn said winter, flu
season and the holidays are the hardest times because it’s when Khoen’s body is under more stress.

“It’s the flu season. When he is fighting an infection that is when his body is under stress and
his body just can’t keep up with the rate he is losing his blood, so that’s when he needs the medical intervention and the transfusions,” she said. “The blood clinics are closed during Christmas and people are thinking about their families and other ways of giving, but people still need blood just as much over the holidays as they do the rest of the year. The need doesn’t stop.” The Yatchuks hope sharing their story inspires others to make saving a life their greatest gift this holiday season. More than 3,000 donors in B.C. are needed to fill open appointments by Jan. 5. Download the GiveBlood app, call 1-8882 DONATE (1-888-2366283) or book at blood.ca. Walk-in appointments are also available at all locations. People who unable to donate blood can give financially, volunteer and encourage others in their network to become donors.

Murphy’s Law
I
TED MURPHY
f I had one Christmas wish this year, it would be to ask for a little civility. I know, there’s a certain irony that a guy who’s paid to be critical of people and their decisions is wishing for a more courteous world, but the slope we find ourselves on these days when it comes to public discourse is as slippery as ever. Social media is a wonderful tool that accomplishes so much good, but it’s also provided a platform that allows, let’s just say, an unfiltered exchange of opinions. Spirited debate on any topic is a worthwhile endeavour, but far too often this dialogue ends up as nothing more than a name-calling exercise where positions get entrenched and those monikers get increasingly more offensive. If there are two willing combatants, who am I to stand in the way, but what this kind of regular interaction seems to be doing is normalizing such behaviour. I guess I shouldn’t have been, but I was gobsmacked when someone recently asked why I didn’t run their letter to the editor that called someone else a f*#!ing crook. The letter was bad enough, but it was the incredulous inquiry that really hit home for me. How anyone would think that type of language would be appropriate is beyond me, but I guess that’s the world we live in today. There’s greater latitude when commenting through Disqus at the bottom of our online stories or on our Facebook page, but we’re still a newspaper so even there we must have rules of decorum, much to the chagrin of a select number of contributors. There’s a fine line between allowing people to have their say and stepping over that line, and although we don’t like to play censor, we’re finding ourselves in that role with increasing frequency. It’s not the position they take, but the vitriol they use to bolster it, a sort of open season on the subjects of our stories, on us for writing about them or on other commenters who have the audacity to disagree. Stuff you wouldn’t say to their face in the grocery aisle — or at least I hope you wouldn’t — is uttered without a second thought in the online community. Disagree all you want, but do so in a respectful manner. I know, I know, I’m asking for a lot, but that would be one heck of a Christmas gift. Merry Christmas, everyone.
Luna leaves a massive hole as well as many good memories “Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one is a life diminished.” Author Dean Koontz We are feeling a little diminished around here right now as our beloved 13.5-year-old Luna passed on Dec. 13. Not the greatest time of year for this loss but paradoxically it is an appropriate time to appreciate what we have had to offset the loss. She was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease a couple of weeks ago so we knew time was short. As any pet owner knows, the grief with a loss is tremendous but we were lucky enough to spend some really good time together with the 94-year-old. Our family was able to take a last beach walk together. She was slow but her tail was wagging and we were quietly smiling and crying at the same time. As George Carlin noted, “Life is a series of dogs.” Her last hours were spent on the “Grampa” chair, a comfy ’50s lounger that has been home to other beloved pets. I would sit with her and we would gaze into each other’s eyes in staring contests that I would never win. My family would like thank the doctors and staff at Huff Animal Hospital who helped to make her last days peaceful. It used to

be that anytime we were driving north of 12th Avenue, Luna would start to shake because she knew she was either going to the groomer or the vet. The past few trips saw her far more relaxed and even happy to see the staff which was nice. Thank you for the lovely flowers and condolences as well. On Dec. 13 we had occasion to be with another 94-year-old. As fate would have it, my mother-in-law’s Christmas party at KinVillage was the same day as Luna’s passing. A couple of hundred people of all ages gathered in a beautifully decorated hall to share stories of Christmases past. Dozens of volunteers spent a lot of time to pull this event off. High school students, KinVillage staff and other
volunteers served a fantastic turkey meal. First-time servers and busboys attended to the guests with smiles and good cheer. A delightful musical trio, complete with fiddler, played all the classic Christmas tunes. It was heartwarming on an otherwise troubling day to see multigenerations of families celebrating together. The kindness and love that filled that room was astounding and I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to the organizers and the army of volunteers that were able to bring smiles to the faces of so many that probably don’t smile as much as they would like. After the event, Peggy took her mom back to her room and I walked home, taking the long way to reflect on the day. The festive lights on a dry, chilly night absorbed me, and all cliches aside, gave me cause to appreciate what I have, and what I have had. I want for nothing. Live in gratitude and give thanks. Merry Christmas to all! Sleep in heavenly peace, Luna. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. Hospice should get tax dollars regardless of its MAiD stance
Editor: Re: It’s back in their court, Murphy’s Law, Dec. 19 In Ted Murphy’s opinion, “The hospice society has every right to take the position it has, but…” Translation: Delta Hospice does not have this right. Adrian Dix (i.e. the provincial government) has threatened “consequences” should the hospice society not side with the government. Remember, the funding at issue is tax dollars, and tax dollars are regularly dispensed to special interest groups. So Dix is saying, agree with the government stance, or it will pull your tax dollar funding. Murphy states the society’s stance is at odds with
public sentiment. So? What is public sentiment, anyway? Doesn’t a lawful, private institution, in a free society, with practices based on moral principles that have existed for eons, have the right to be at odds with public sentiment? There are many public sentiments I find offensive and morally repugnant. Thankfully I can manoeuvre around them… for now. Do not fall for the false argument that opposing government imposition of MAiD is denying rights. That right exists under law, the Delta Hospice Society just doesn’t want to practice it. It wants to offer alternative care. The society is skeptically examining the motiva-
tions and outcomes of an approach not based in its well-founded and chosen morals and ethics. In Europe, this approach has been supported and promoted for decades, with troubling results. Research them. The numbers have steadily increased (B.C. has the highest rate of assisted death in Canada), the approved grounds for assisted death have expanded to even include depression, children, and considerations of convenience and cost are noted in research. European public sentiment slid down the slippery slope. Some don’t want to help this slippage here in Canada. Deborah Burpee
Medical care goes above and beyond
Editor: After five months in Delta Hospital and 17 months in the full care facility at KinVillage, I am compelled to voice my gratitude for the excellent treatment and care that I received. We are truly lucky to have such establishments together with their staffs right here on our doorsteps. At one time my situation in Delta Hospital was so dire that I had to be transported to Surrey Memorial Hospital where
more advanced treatment was possible for a few days. This was indeed a credit to the Delta Hospital staff to recognize the limitations and availability of their equipment. Likewise, with help from all the caring, encouraging and supportive staff in KinVillage, I became sufficiently independent to be released home to my family. It was evident that the other residents were also subjected to this kindly treatment. While one never really
wants to find themselves in a care home, all I can say is that KinVillage provided the services and loving care to make my stay there so pleasant and rewarding. There have been too many people in both establishments to name but I hope they will hear of my gratitude. May our residents and politicians continue to support the medical facilities that we are so fortunate to have here. Peter Gurney

Why do the knives always come out for Century?
Editor: Re: Tall buildings not the answer in Tsawwassen’s town core, letter to the editor, Dec. 19 Well, here we go again. Merry Christmas, Mr. Hodgins. Every time Century Group attempts to create a
building, the knives come out. For someone whose father built much of our community, it is sickening to watch all the naysayers coming forward. No family has done more to make this community a great place to
live and it was George Hodgins’ foresight that made it all possible. He gave so much to so many people and yet was vilified. I suspect it was just jealousy. Let us hope this trend does not continue. H. and D. Wallace
Let’s not spoil what we have in Tsawwassen
Editor: Re: Here’s a perfect opportunity to keep the town core alive, letter to the editor, Dec. 12 In her letter, Ann Stirling states that “more seniors are looking to get out of
their big houses and get into a condo, but there is hardly anything to buy here in Tsawwassen.” I suggest she take a trip along Boundary Bay Road and see the beginning of the 950 homes that the
same builder, Century Group, is putting up. I am perfectly happy with the Town Centre Mall as it is, as are many of my friends. Let’s not spoil what we have. A. Jackson

Trucking can’t support an eight-lane tunnel DAVE EARLE
Optimist contributor
The Metro Vancouver board endorsed an eightlane immersed tube tunnel last month as its preferred replacement option for the existing George Massey Tunnel. The board’s recommendation will now go to the province, which has committed to public consultations. While it seems the decision is all but made, we
continue to hope the province will choose another option. We’ve already heard many arguments opposed to the tunnel. Not only will it add extensive costs and delays to the project, it will have a significant environmental impact on the Fraser River. There’s also the fact the eight-lane tunnel won’t address one of the main problems with the existing tunnel: congestion.
With one transit lane in each direction, that leaves only three lanes for vehicles, which is what we have now for traffic travelling at peak periods in the rush-hour direction. Notwithstanding all these concerns, and they are important ones, they don’t include another three major problems that are of critical concern to the road transportation industry: the tunnel’s impact on safety, afford-
ability and transportationrelated emissions. To start, it’s unclear how the proposed eight-lane tunnel option will address safety challenges associated with a tunnel crossing, given the high collision rate in the existing George Massey Tunnel and unsafe conditions for emergency responders. The provincial government’s 2016 health impact assessment of the tunnel replacement project found

The provincial government has yet to determine how it will replace the George Massey Tunnel, but the BC Trucking Association is not a fan of an eight-lane immersed tube.
the stretch of road, including the tunnel, Steveston Highway and Highway 17A, had a higher than average crash rate and that tunnel crashes tended to be more severe than crashes elsewhere on the Highway 99 corridor. We also know a 2015 report estimated that a bridge option could reduce the frequency of collisions by approximately 35 per cent. And building a new tunnel, even with improved geometrics, can’t completely resolve these safety concerns for either emergency responders or motorists. For example, fires resulting from a crash will lower visibility and air quality, making conditions much more dangerous than on a bridge, even in a better-designed tunnel. The tunnel also creates congestion-related delays, unpredictable travel times and it can’t accommodate oversized shipments or trucks carrying dangerous goods such as fuel. This affects affordability and emissions because all these limitations force some heavy trucks to use alternate routes. The result is trucks incurring additional travel time and fuel consumption, creating congestion on other routes, and ultimately generating higher transportation costs and emissions. With a new tunnel a minimum of five years away, there will be no congestion relief for some time, and we expect any tunnel to include the same restrictions on oversized
cargo and dangerous goods. It’s no wonder some businesses are considering relocating from communities like Richmond to avoid extra costs and delays, taking local jobs with them. From a goods movement perspective, the BC Trucking Association would prefer a replacement bridge because it’s safest for road users and emergency personnel, it will improve efficiency and affordability by reducing transportation-related costs, and less congestion will also mean fewer emissions. But this project also raises a persistent and troubling theme in the way important decisions on transportation infrastructure are made in the Lower Mainland: efficient goods movement is not a major consideration. In this case, goods movement through the George Massey crossing seems to have been an afterthought. This is surprising and unfortunate considering the trucking industry transports approximately 90 per cent of all consumer goods and the importance of goods movement to the regional economy — and to B.C.’s economy as a whole. If we want a safe, efficient and affordable transportation system, we need to start making goods movement a real part of these conversations. Delta taking steps to head off traffic headaches at beach IAN JACQUES

The City of Delta is taking preemptive action in an effort to avert traffic chaos next summer at an increasingly popular Centennial Beach. At the Dec. 16 meeting, Delta council approved several steps recommended by city staff to address concerns arising from the increase in traffic speed and overflow parking issues in Boundary Bay this past summer. The steps include: • Speed enforcement undertaken by Delta police on 3rd Avenue and Boundary Bay Road; • Metro Vancouver be
requested to pay for any costs associated with Boundary Bay Regional Park traffic management; • Staff investigate seasonal parking permit regulations within Boundary Bay; • Signs informing drivers of “no vehicular access to Boundary Bay beyond this point” be installed at the park access and at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Boundary Bay Road. Staff has also been directed to consult with neighbourhood residents on options to deter pick-up and drop-off activity at the north end of Centennial Parkway adjacent to the park and on traffic safety improve-
ments at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Centennial Parkway. Delta will also be installing painted crosswalks at pedestrian beach access points along Centennial Parkway and 67A Street. “A review has been undertaken on the traffic concerns raised this past summer by area residents due to the influx of visitors to Boundary Bay Regional Park,” engineering director Steven Lan stated in his report to council. “The recommendations contained in this report reflect an overall approach to ameliorate the traffic, parking and pedestrian safety issues that were noted this past summer.”

Hospice gets support for position on MAiD
Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians writes letter to Health Minister Adrian Dix SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The public and many health care providers have had a longstanding fear that hospice palliative care hastens people’s deaths, something that will be made worse if facilities are forced to provide medically-assisted deaths. That’s what the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians is saying in a letter of support for the Delta Hospice Society, which is not providing Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), to B.C. Health Minster Adrian Dix. Delta Hospice Society president Angelina Ireland provided the Optimist a copy of the letter expressing concern that palliative care centres in Fraser Health, such as hospices, would be mandated to provide MAiD on site. “While we appreciate the requirement for MAiD to be available, requiring it to be provided in hospices and palliative care units poses risk for potential harm,” wrote Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians president Dr. Leonie Herx. Herx also provided a recent joint statement with the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, which notes hospice palliative care and MAiD substantially differ in multiple areas, including philosophy, intention and approach. Noting one of the biggest potential harms is to those who do not choose MAiD, which is more than 98 per cent of those dying, Herx said it has led to late referrals or people choosing to not be referred to palliative care services that could have benefited them. “Insisting that MAiD be provided in all palliative care centres and hospices has the potential to undermine the last 40 years of education about the advocacy for hospice palliative care and goes against the core, foundational principles of hospice care. It also removes the choice for those who want to choose a natural death supported by high quality hospice palliative care without fear their lives will be shortened,” Herx said. Herx added hospices should be able to make their own arrangements for patients who request MAiD. Dix recently warned the Delta Hospice Society
could be facing “consequences” for not providing the service. “Delta Hospice can decide it doesn’t want to continue to receive support from the Fraser Health Authority in its mission,” Dix said. “They can choose to do that. But you can absolutely have it your way. But, of course, you can’t have it both
ways.” Fraser Health representatives recently met with the leadership of hospice to discuss concerns the region has regarding the society’s compliance with its contract. “Fraser Health subsequently provided them with formal notice of the concerns,” the region stated.
Fraser Health said it’s reviewing the society’s response. A heated annual general meeting in late November at Genesis Theatre saw the election of several new board members, most opposed to MAiD. In a 5-3 vote a couple of days later, the new board reversed a vote taken a week prior by the previous
board to allow MAiD, putting the society on a collision course with Fraser Health. In a letter to staff, volunteers and members, Ireland said the motion was based on two independent legal opinions that MAiD is not compatible with the purposes of the society as stated in its constitution.

Old library books given new life in Africa Local charity takes surplus from Delta School District to create library in remote Kenyan village
Every year Afretech volunteers gather, sort and pack books culled from Delta School District libraries. These books are then shipped to places around the globe where educational resources are in short supply or even non-existent. Rarely, if ever, do these volunteers and their sponsors know the impact their efforts have on lives half a world away, but this is one of those stories. Last September, Afretech, a Delta-based charity that has been providing practical resources in the developing world for decades, sent a shipment of medical beds, computers and elementary school library books to Kenya. In January, members of the group spent time in Laikipia, one of the poorest areas in the country. Most local people there scratch out a living on barren soil and live in mud huts with bits of tin and cardboard completing roofs and windows; few people are gainfully

employed One of the visiting party’s goals was to install a library at Endana Primary
School, a remote, desolate, dusty school with few, if any, amenities. Goats and sheep wander the school
yard and the occasional camel walks by. With 100 boxes (4,000plus books), enough to
really make a difference, volunteers began the task of systematically filling the shelves. Only then did
they notice a young boy of about nine watching attentively at the window. A little later they realized he had sidled in and was hunched in a corner. The next time they checked he was under a table, absorbed in a book. Needing help, they coaxed him out and taught him how to file — a chore he took to immediately. He stayed the entire day and at the end they asked him to choose a book for himself. By then his friend had come to fetch him, and volunteers watched the two of them pore over their new and precious possession as they headed home. It is possible that having access to all those books may well change their lives. We will never know. The Delta School District has been a partner with Afretech since 1992 as culled library books in good condition find a second life in another country. North Delta Rotary and Afretech also coordinate on projects.

Welcomes You
It’s the night before Christmas. But, sadly, it will soon be over. Families will gather, gifts will be torn open, and turkeys will be devoured, but by Dec. 26, the cultural holiday will be done. But for Lutherans and other Christians who observe the liturgical calendar, the feast will have just begun! As the popular traditional song The Twelve Days of Christmas reminds us, Christmas is indeed a 12-day feast. It begins with the celebration of the nativity of Our Lord and ends with Epiphany. When we consider the magnitude of what Jesus brought into the world, a full 12 days of celebrating

life, to those who do not deserve it. Who are those people? All of us! Jesus lived, died and rose again to bring a wayward and sinful humanity back to God. The gift of God’s forgiveness is the greatest of gifts. And it is truly a gift because it requires nothing of us other than that we receive it and trust in its power. St. Paul tells us clearly: “If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved!” (Rom 10:9) God bless you and your loved ones this season. Hearty souls will celebrate four decades of the big chill next week. The City of Delta marks 40 years of the popular New Year’s Day tradition with its annual Polar Bear Swim at Centennial Beach in Boundary Bay.
Every year, residents young and old — many dressed in colourful costumes — kick off another year with a dip in the icy waters of Boundary Bay. While not everyone is brave enough to take the dip, the shores and beach area are always packed with onlookers taking in the spectacle.
Once again, the first three swimmers to ring the bell will be awarded trophies and prizes. There will also be prizes for the oldest swimmer as well as the swimmer who has traveled from farthest away. Once the first three swimmers have rung the bell, all swimmers will be
required to get out of the water. The popular event will also feature plenty of family-friendly entertainment like live ice carving, a drum circle workshop, marshmallow roasting, a children’s treasure hunt, face painting and a raffle prize draw. Top all the excitement off with a deli-
cious serving of hot chocolate from the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club and you have got yourself a festive start to 2020. Registration starts at noon and the swim begins at 1 p.m. Don’t forget to grab yourself a coveted annual Polar Bear Swim button when you register.
Ladner Zephyrs to face off in Christmas Charity Classic
A holiday hockey tradition is just around the corner. This Saturday, Dec. 28, the Ladner Zephyrs presents its seventh annual Christmas Charity Classic hockey game from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre. This year coaches Tyler Honigman, Roy Leary and Darcy McMullen will be leading the way as Team Zephyr Black and Team Zephyr White square off in a quest to hoist the Zephyr Cup. Rosters have yet to be determined, but will be announced soon. Keeping with the spirit of the season, the Zephyrs have once again decided to donate all proceeds from the game to the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. With the support of the community, the Zephyrs

The whole community is invited to watch
the game while making a donation if possible. Online donations can be made at: https://www.gifttool.com. There will also be a 50/50 draw at the game for anyone who would like
to make cash donations at that time. You don’t have to donate to watch the game and you don’t have to watch the game to donate. There will also be a post-game event starting
at 6 p.m. at the Landing Pub & Grill, which will include a burger and beer, with proceeds also going to the fundraising effort. There will also be a raffle for some great prizes. All are invited to attend.

The Night Before Christmas Twas the nigght before Christmas and all through the store The prices were lowered like never before. The sew foam was waiting for just the right home While vinyls and leather were matched for their tone. Tack hammers and pliers were stacked on the shelf With hopes that some trimmer would buy for himself. The roll goods were lined up like little tin men As I walked by so slowly I turned down the bend. I turned very slowly craning by head I saw what I wanted A vinyl in red! I knew it was Christmas tops weren’t in style But springtime would be here in just a short while. I am always impressed

with Nelson’s serv rvice and price And I thought of his crew who are always so nice. I think that I’ll call them that old Nelson crew And place one last order Yes, that’s what I’ll do. As I hung up the phone I heard such a chatter I went straight outside to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes should appear But Rob Nelson himself and eight tiny reindeer! “What service!” I exclaimed as he dropped off my order He had one more stop and asked “Which way to the border?” Then he sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like a down of thistle. I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight...

Today, I look forward to sitting. I haven’t done much of that lately. Instead of sitting, I have been walking the mall, hauling the tree, wrapping the gifts and setting the table. Enough of that. Today, if everything goes according to plan, there’ll be a window for sitting. It won’t be a large one, but it will be a window nonetheless. The window will be bookended by anything but sitting.
At the front end, there will be the make-ahead potatoes to get out of the way. There will be cinnamon buns to be made. There will be cranberry sauce to whip together. There will be gifts to be placed beneath the tree. I can do none of those things while sitting. At the back end, there’ll be tomorrow. There’ll be stockings to open, presents to unwrap, turkey to be placed in the oven, gravy to be made. Sure, I can open the stockings while sitting, but that’s about it. And sure, I can hardly wait until tomorrow. But I can also hardly wait to sit. “We should string up some more blue lights,” the husband said a few days ago. He was talking about outdoor lights. He was talking about yours truly holding the ladder. No sitting there. “We should get another stuffer or two for the kids,” he continued. He was talk-
THE ATLANTIS DA AY SPA TEAM
ing about the drug store. He was talking about yours truly going along. Again, no sitting there. “We should invite some folks in for a drink,” he said. Would be fun, I thought, but it would entail a number of tasks that would require me to use my legs. Like shopping for canapés, say, and prepping a bowl of egg nog. “I’m all over that,” I said, and so we issued the invites. A little later today, however, after the tourtiere has been put in the oven and after the final bow has been tied, I will crank a little Drummer Boy and light some candles. We will set out a fire and pour something festive, and retire in the living room. The shoes will come off and lights on the tree will go on, and we’ll plop ourselves on the sofa. I wait for this moment all season long: the window on Christmas Eve.

Bria revives ‘Santa’ program to deliver gifts to seniors
This year Santa got a little bit of extra help providing gifts to seniors in Delta from staff and residents at The Waterford and The Wexford senior living communities. In 2018, Deltassist was disappointed to cancel the Santa for Seniors program due to a lack of funding. This year, a new partnership with Bria Communities saw The Waterford and The Wexford take over the program. Low-income seniors in Delta who applied for the Deltassist Christmas hamper program had the opportunity to request a special gift delivered by a Bria volunteer in the week before Christmas. Seniors requested gifts such as electric heating pads, pillows, magnifying glasses and socks. Gifts were purchased specifically for each person and elves from The Waterford and The Wexford wrapped the personalized presents and packed them into red Bria bags. The bags also included delicious homemade cookies, Christmas cards with a friendly personal greeting, and hand-knit scarves and hats made by knitters from The Wexford. With overflowing bags, volunteers from Bria and Century Group travelled throughout Tsawwassen, Ladner and North Delta to deliver gifts. Gloria and Garry, a senior couple who live along River Road, were overwhelmed with thankfulness when Santa stopped by.
“This means so much,” said Gloria. “Now we have something to underneath our tree.” “This has been a fantastic partnership,” said Tanya Snow, director of Bria Communities. “It’s the time of year when seniors can fall through the cracks. We want them to know we see them and care. Our vision is that all seniors’ lives are enriched with friendship, happiness and purpose regardless of their financial situation.” SUBMITTED PHOTO

This was all made possible through the hard work of those volunteers and a community of donors. Forty donations were provided for the event’s silent auction and over 50 toys were collected at the door that evening. Three local bands — My Friend’s Band, Rockline and Rhythm Rush — entertained the crowd from 7 p.m. to just past midnight. Plans have already started for next year’s event.

Happy Holidays
Delta Gymnastics recently held a holiday party at the gym for participants in its Seniors Can Move program, which included a photo in their new program T-shirts. Developed by the Delta Gymnastics Society last year, Seniors Can Move is enabling those 65 years and older to take part in physical activity in a gymnastics setting at the Delta Sport Development Centre in Ladner. Classes are open to all Delta seniors and registration is free. Classes include simple stretching routines as well as other exercises designed to help improve agility, balance, co-ordination and strength. The made-in-Delta program has been so successful it is being replicated at more than a dozen gym clubs throughout the province.
Have A Vintage Season! Here’s hoping your holiday season is a truly memorable one. We know we’re filled with fond memories as we recall the many kind people we’ve had the privilege to serve this year. Merry Christmas!

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
Try finding a new hobby that you can be passionate about
How people spend their leisure time might affect their perceptions about that time. For example, few people may consider watching TV an “activity,” although the American Time Use Survey found that watching TV occupied more leisure time, nearly three hours per day, than any other leisure activity. Finding new hobbies that encourage active participation can make leisure time more memorable. Finding a new hobby as an adult can be tricky, but approaching activities with an open mind may help people uncover new hobbies they can be passionate about. • Think back to your childhood. Hobbies you once enjoyed as a child may have long since been forgotten, but it can be fun to reimmerse yourself in such interests. Adults who loved to play sports as a child can no doubt find adult leagues in their area, while once budding artists might want to dust off their easels and visit a local paint and sip facility. • Reinvent something you’re already doing.
The BULBS we use help, like the natural sun, to activate VITAMIN D.
Hobbies that encourage active participation can make leisure time more memorable. Another way to find a new hobby is to consider the things you already do and see if there’s ways to make them better. For example, cooking might be made more enjoyable by enrolling in a cooking class, where you can meet fellow foodies while fine-tuning your culinary skills. If you love to read, start a community book club. • Expand your horizons. It’s easy for anyone to say
“no” to something new, but especially so for adults accustomed to their routines. But those who are willing to try anything are more likely to find something new to be passionate about than those who shy away from the unknown. You don’t have to make a big initial commitment when trying a new hobby, but approach any new ideas or suggestions with an open mind.

Understanding glaucoma helps people take steps to reduce risk
Vision should never be taken for granted. Appreciating one’s sense of sight involves scheduling routine eye exams and taking steps to protect one’s eyes. But safeguarding vision also involves understanding the various conditions that can affect eye health. Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that can lead to progressive damage to the optic nerve. People who experience glaucoma can lose nerve tissue and eventually suffer vision loss. Understanding what contributes to glaucoma can help people take the steps necessary to reduce their risk. Glaucoma is the second
leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 60, although it can occur at any age. The Mayo Clinic states that many forms of glaucoma produce no warning signs and changes in vision may occur so gradually they are not detected until the condition has reached an advanced stage. There are various types of glaucoma, however primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form, according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation. Primary open-angle glaucoma occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time and fluid cannot drain out of

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 60. the eye. As a result, intraocular pressure rises and damages the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting signals from the eye to the brain. A less common type of glaucoma is called acuteclosure glaucoma, which occurs due to an abrupt and rapid increase of eye pressure. This is an emergency situation that requires prompt care to prevent vision loss. An eye doctor will conduct various tests to determine if a patient is at risk for glaucoma. The Mayo Clinic says tonometry is commonly used to measures intraocular pressure. During this test, the eye surface will be anesthetized with special drops. A tonometer will be applied lightly to the cornea, indenting it slightly. The resistance will be measured and calculated to determine if pressure is present. The effects of glaucoma cannot be reversed, but glaucoma can be caught early. Medications and lifestyle changes can improve symptoms. Prescription eye drops can reduce the production of fluid in the eye. Oral medications and surgery are other options as well.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
Yoga, weight loss and more can be the ticket to a better back
Back pain is a part of life for many people. WebMD says back pain is the second most common reason people visit the doctor. Back pain can take on various forms, ranging from a dull ache to a sharp pain. Some may experience intermittent back pain, while others may have chronic back pain. The causes can be considerable, from injury to underlying medical conditions. Alleviating back pain — or preventing it in the first place — involves understanding the common causes and taking appropriate actions. • Try exercise. Routine exercise is not guaranteed to eliminate back pain, but it can make it less frequent, advises doctors at Harvard Medical School. Low back pain due to muscle strain or muscle spasm can be tamed by exercise. Yoga, or a similar stretch-based exercise, can be very effective at
Back pain can be overwhelming, but with some strategies a person can reduce his or her propensity for pain. alleviating back pain. Yoga relaxes muscle tension and expands range of motion in the joints. It also can build muscle strength. • Maintain proper posture. Slouching over computers or looking down at phones while texting may be doing damage to the back. Work ergonomically and take breaks to stretch. Sit up straight in chairs and try to keep a straight
back while walking as well. • Shed some pounds. Extra pounds at the midsection can shift the centre of gravity and put strain on the lower back, advises WebMD. • Don’t smoke. The Arthritis Foundation says research shows a high prevalence of spinal stenosis and back pain among smokers. It is believed that smoking can damage blood vessels that supply blood to the back. Smoking is also bad for the bones and is a risk factor for osteoporosis. • Try a different sleeping position. Talk with a doctor about the best position for sleeping to ease up back pain. It may include being on your side with knees pulled up, or placing a pillow under your knees. • Lift cautiously. Always bend at the knees and use the legs to lift items. This can help you avoid straining your back.

By day he is charge of one of the top Bantam age boys hockey teams in Western Canada. By night he is mentoring young players with a girls minor hockey association. Both more than satisfy Milan Dragicevic’s puck passion. The 49-year-old Richmond resident spends a good portion of his day in skates. It starts at Planet Ice where he coaches the Delta Hockey Academy’s Bantam Prep Green team that will enter the holiday break with a league best 18-1-0 record. It is then off to the Richmond Ice Centre as Director of Player Development for the Richmond Ravens — a position he has held for about a decade. “It’s a job but not really a job because I’m coaching hockey,” smiled Dragicevic whose extensive hockey resumé includes being the first-ever head coach of the Vancouver Giants. “I love working with the girls and the Ravens are a fantastic association.

Lukas Dragicevic is projected to be among the top picks of the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft. “You have to change your hat a bit after working (with high end talent at DHA). But both of them are so rewarding. It’s a lot of fun and I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.” Dragicevic joined the DHA coaching staff last season, working with the academy’s Bantam White team. It’s been a seamless tradition up to the top end Green squad that already had a number of familiar players, none more so than his son Lukas — expected to be among the early picks in the 2020 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft
come May. The 6-foot blueliner with impressive mobility is one of just two returning players and is fourth in team scoring with 32 points in 19 games. Lukas came through the former Richmond Minor Hockey Association before making the transition to DHA but was only coached by his dad in the spring. “He had really good coaches growing up and Richmond Minor did a fantastic job of developing not just him but all the kids. It’s a big credit to Richmond Minor and what they did in the past,” said Dragicevic. “It’s also a big credit of what DHA did last year and what we are doing with all the kids this year. “This is not about coaching my son. It’s just the way it worked out this year that I coached a lot of these kids in spring hockey and have known this age group for
many years. Last year, was great experience coaching the White team and a very positive experience for me. I wanted to come back.” DHA’s Bantam Prep Green team has an outstanding track record of developing talent. Alumni include eventual NHL first round draft picks Ty Smith (2018) and Dylan Cozens (2019). Last year, 12 DHA team members were taken in the WHL Bantam Draft. That reputation attracts players from throughout Western Canada and beyond when it comes to team tryouts each spring. This year’s squad features players from Portland, Fort St. John, Vernon, Brandon, Prince George, Nanaimo and Gibsons. Team bonding is created by an academy environment that sees the boys do everything together including time in the classroom.

“We are a mixed bag of geography from all over Western Canada. The best thing about it is they come over here for 10 months and it’s their family for 10 months,” explained Dragicevic. “The special thing between the group is we are really close. You can see it on the ice with the success that we have had. They like each other and want to play for each other.” The DHA Greens’ 2020 schedule features three tournaments, including defending their title next month at the prestigious John Reid Memorial in St. Albert. It’s then the inaugural WHL Showcase in Seattle and the year-end Canadian School Sport Hockey League Championships. “There are expectations going into these tournaments. Our goal is peak at the right time to have a lot of success but more importantly have fun doing it,” added Dragicevic.

Lloyd rink records rare eight-ender in Tunnel Town Mixed League play It was more than just a routine game earlier this month in Tunnel Town Curling Club’s Friday Night Mixed League. Shaun Lloyd’s rink pulled off the sport’s rarest feat, scoring an eight-ender. Also called a “snowman,” an eightender is a perfect score within a single end of curling with all eight rocks count-

Playdown qualification events took place over the weekend earlier this month at three different venues across the province. In the Lower Mainland Playdowns, Team Taylor from Tunnel Town/ Royal City and Team Bowles from Delta Thistle/Victoria also locked up spots in Victoria. Team Taylor features skip Jensen Taylor and her sister Chelsea at lead, along with Tunnel Town’s Keira McCoy at second and Meredith Cole at third. The girls are coached by
Chris Summers and Dan Wenszek. Delta Thistle’s Elizabeth Bowles has skipped her rink to provincials. She is joined by clubmate Hailey Dubois (second) and Victoria Curling Club’s Kayla Wilson (third) and Sasha Wilson (lead). They are coached by Todd Troyer. Another Delta Thistle rink headed to the provincial capital is led by standout skip Sarah Daniels. They earned their berth back in early November by topping the standings in the B.C. Junior Curling Tour.
Daniels is joined by Sarah Loken, Hannah Lindner and Jordan Henson. On the junior men’s side, Tunnel Town’s Carpenter won the Lower Mainland “B” event to advance to provincials. The team includes Brayden Carpenter (skip), Connor Deane (third), Mack Ellis (second) and Troy Cowan (lead). Greg Deane is the coach. It’s an exciting year for B.C. teams with the 2020 Canadian Junior Championships taking place in Langley — Jan. 18-26.
South Delta rugby standout named to U18 Canadian tour
David Begin will begin 2020 in Team Canada colours. The South Delta rugby standout is among 10 BC players named to the Canadian U18 15s team that will begin a California tour on Dec. 28. The trip will conclude at the World Youth Rugby Festival in Los Angeles on Jan. 3. Begin, a Grade 12 student at South Delta Secondary, has been a fixture with the provincial team program for a number of years. He helped South Delta capture bronze at the 2019 provincials and also suited up for the school’s football team this past fall as a starting lineman. He plays club rugby for the Bayside Sharks in South Surrey.
The tour pulls together athletes from across the country, identified through regional camps and provincial competition throughout the year and gives them the opportunity to be tested at the international level. “The U18 level is a critical step in exposing players to the demands of international rugby,” said Canadian U18 head coach Mike Curran. “Players will be tested in the way they prepare, play, and review.” The U18 program plays a critical role in the national team pathway, staying aligned with Under-20 and Senior program objectives as they look to develop athletes with Senior National team aspirations. “Throughout this tour, players will be asked to play
the game at greater speed and under greater pressure,” added Curran. “We want to facilitate the growth of these players under greater pressure than they have seen in the past. Being creative is the primary theme.” The tour will play a role in selection going into 2020, giving athletes an opportunity to put their hand up for age-grade national team play in the new year. The group will be split into Canada Red and Canada White and play two internationals against USA Blue and USA White on Dec. 28 and Dec. 31. The teams will then head to LA for a scrimmage each against the Blue Bulls Academy Side in the World Youth Festival on Jan. 3.

WILSON, Peter R. December 7, 1944 − December 17, 2019
A Time To Remember
Loved ones who have passed on can be remembered through a Tribute Gift to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. Donations made in memory of your loved ones will be acknowledged with cards sent to family members and an acknowledgement and receipt sent to the donor.
Tributes for December Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation gratefully acknowledges gifts in memory of:
Rick Anderson Frank Barr Irene Bepple Hans Ralph Carlson Songmi Cho Alison Denis Roland Embree Marion Joan Fox Rolf Gerhards Victor Gerrard Betty Gibson Ronnie Gibson Grace Hart William (Bill) Heather Harry Allan Ingves Gladys Keller Fred K. Kennedy Helen Lambe Arden Leung Hans Nowak Peter Proskurnik Mohinber Singh Rai Herb Robinson Joan Robinson Vickie Sangster Patricia Stevens Peter Stonier Walter Touzeau Deborah Urfer Bertha Vollhoffer Your gift assists the Foundation to purchase vital medical equipment for Delta Hospital.
Peter was a gentle soul who had a real love and gift of music. A long−term resident of Tsawwassen, BC, Peter passed away from a heart attack at the age of 75. Peter was born in Melbourne, Australia, to William Walter Wilson and Mildred (Judy) Phyllis Wilson (nee Reed) on December 7, 1944, the third anniversary of the Pearl Harbour attack. Peter’s mother, a Canadian war bride, was reluctant to put Baby Peter down for fear that the many insects or reptiles of her new Australian home would take a tasty bite. Peter grew up and lived in Australia before reuniting with his family in the early 1990s when he came to Canada to make Tsawwassen his home. He delivered newspapers to the residents of Tsawwassen since the beginning. Many of his customers have become friends and regularly provided him with care packages or would take him for lunch or a muffin. He has been the face of "the Sally Ann" kettle every Christmas for many years. Peter also served for many years as the Acting Director of the Tsawwassen Open Stage Arts Centre, promoting amateur singers, actors, poets, writers, musicians, and composers. Peter, along with friends, played all the local senior homes as "Two Ps in a Pod," and sang with a trio called "Scallywag." Peter enjoyed being a Toastmaster coach and examiner, helping many young people gain confidence. Christianity was an important part of Peter’s life and a real social outlet for him. A brilliant scholar, Peter graduated high school at the age of 15. His perfect pitch ear guided him to graduation from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and his artistic eye through an animation diploma from Capilano College, North Vancouver, plus art courses at the TAFE college in Brisbane, Australia. Playing guitar as a teen, Peter formed a garage band called the "007s." In his early twenties, Peter played lead guitar with a band that went on to perform several times on Sydney’s Channel 7 TV. He was described as "Australia’s best technical guitarist at the time" by his band members. Peter is predeceased by his parents and survived by his brother, Michael (Sheelagh Matthews) of Black Diamond, Alberta, and his sister, Julie of Victoria, BC. He was a proud uncle to Sarah Brunelle (Jay), Mitchell Wilson, Craig Wilson (Kirby Browne), and their children. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army would be much appreciated. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 30, at 4:30 pm at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church (in the Tsawwassen Alliance Church Building), 4951 12th Avenue, Delta, BC V4M 2A5.
