Training just got realistic State-of-the-art Delta simulator offers police departments real-life scenarios IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

It’s decision making practice, not target practice. That’s how Delta police deputy Chief Norm Lipinski described a state-of-the-art simulator, part of a new Regional Municipal Training Centre, that opened in Delta Monday afternoon. A cost-sharing arrangement will allow officers from Delta, New Westminster, Port Moody and West Vancouver police departments, as well as Metro Vancouver Transit Police, to take part in enhanced training in de-escalation and use-offorce scenarios at the City of Delta-owned facility. The training centre consists of a simulator, classroom and a full mat room for practicing control techniques. The simulator is housed within a purpose-built structure to create an immersive environment, and consists of five large screens surrounding the officer, and real-time audio, linked to a computer operated by other officers. The simulator itself cost $286,000. “There may be an impression out there that this type of training is about police learning to shoot accurately in a high pressure situation,” said Lipinski. “While that’s important, it’s not actually our priority. Really, what’s vital for us, is that the simulator gives officers the chance to practice decision making. It’s decision making practice, not target practice.” Within Metro Vancouver, police deal with people every day who are experiencing a mental health crisis or who are in the throes of drug addic-

tion. The vast majority of the time, incidents are handled without issue, but sometimes things become complicated and officers need to rely on their training as well as past experiences. The simulator offers hundreds of fully-interactive scenarios to allow officers to hone their skills in an immersive environment. In the simulator, officers assess the verbal and non-verbal cues of people they are interacting with, and after the scenario, the trainer and participant can discuss the actions taken. The officer can immediately go back and work through the scenario again

to ensure a successful outcome. The simulator also allows each department to tailor locations specific to their city. “If we want to train on, say, the Alex Fraser Bridge, we can do that,” said DPD S/Sgt. Mo Parry. “The scenarios can be as realistic as possible. We can add wind, rain, sun, darkness, add background sounds such as dogs barking, traffic or footsteps coming from behind the officer.” Chief Neil Dubord said any part of a mental health wellness strategy is ensuring officers are trained adequately for what they encounter in the field. “The research is very

clear: officers who experience immersive, interactive and responsible virtual reality training are better prepared for their real world encounters,” said Dubord. “I consider all of us very fortunate to be able to access such sophisticated training.” Delta Mayor George Harvie called the partnership between the five police agencies a win for the entire region. “I think I can speak on behalf of my colleagues when I say that as municipalities with independent police departments, we’re always looking to help our police forces have up-todate training,” said Harvie. West Vancouver A/

Chief Shane Barber offered praise to DPD for spearheading the initiative. “I really appreciate Delta’s leadership… it would never have happened without them,” he said. “They brought this to us. It’s an amazing initiative and it is something that is really a game changer for us in terms of our ability to practice those decision making episodes that Norm talked about earlier. With all the mental health issues we encounter on the streets and the complications around mental health and drug abuse, there is always a better way to manage people without using force.”

Ridesharing options in Delta are now just a tap of a smartphone app away. On Monday, both Lyft and Uber announced expanded service areas that include Delta, which has had limited access since the two companies began operating in Greater Vancouver in late January. Lyft, which didn’t serve Delta at all up to this week, has expanded its coverage area, including both the Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay ferry terminals. According to a news release, the rideshare company continues to see the number of drivers interested in participating increase and has heard from both riders and drivers that there’s significant appetite for Lyft to serve a larger region. Lyft has also seen a desire from riders to have an additional transportation option to get to the ferry terminals in the region. “We’ve heard loud and clear that Lyft users would like to see us operating in a

larger region — and we’re thrilled to now be offering service from Horseshoe Bay to the U.S. border, and UBC to Langley,” said Peter Lukomskyj, general manager for Lyft in B.C. “We’re looking forward to offering residents and visitors an additional way of getting to and from the ferry terminals, in addition to across much of Metro Vancouver. We will continue working hard to grow our driver community and serve the full region as soon as possible.” On Monday afternoon, Uber also announced that it’s expanding service to more areas of Metro Vancouver, including all of Delta. Tsawwassen was initially excluded from Uber’s

service area when it launched in late January. Uber will now be serving the region from White Rock to West Vancouver and from Delta to Langley. “On launch day we promised you we would be expanding soon... that day has come!” said a statement from the company. “Ride-hailing offers Delta residents another transportation alternative and I’m glad to see Lyft expand its service area to include our community,” said Mayor George Harvie. “I am proud of council and staff for moving quickly on this issue to ensure that ride-hailing companies were able to provide service in Delta as soon as their business operations allowed.”

OWL founder Bev Day dedicated life to birds ‘The bird lady’ was a pioneer in her field SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) founder and former long-time executive director Bev Day passed away late last month. Rescuing and caring for injured birds of prey since 1978, Day was considered a pioneer in the field. First taking in injured birds at her Surrey home, she founded OWL in 1985. With the help of dedicated volunteers, she set up an operation on acreage in Surrey, but when that property was sold, the operation moved to its present location in the 3800-block of 72nd Street in East Ladner. The face of the organization for many years, Day was affectionately known by some as “the bird lady” in Delta. She was well respected in the community and was a finalist for Citizen of the Year in 2010. In a 2018 interview, Day admitted it had been

tough not being involved in the organization she not only loved, but one that was very much a part of her identity over several decades. Trying to maintain her infectious laugh, Day, who moved into a mobile home in Aldergrove, got tearful when talking about her split with the organization she founded, saying it was

physically and emotionally draining since her firing in 2014. It turned out to be a particularly nasty break up with the two sides taking each other to court. A B.C. Supreme Court judge ruled in favour of Day, finding her employment was wrongly terminated, without cause, and that there was no merit to OWL’s case. “Even after they fired me I still ended up getting night calls because everybody knew us. The community was behind me and I had so many people tell me they’re glad we won the case but this has been so much stress. That was my life, everything, basically for 40 years,” she told the Optimist. With her husband Ralph experiencing ongoing health issues and her daughter passing away during the drama, Day said having to defend her character and reputation was particularly difficult. In the ruling, the judge

noted, “(OWL) was a significant and consuming part of her life and sense of self-worth,” adding Day was forced to defend meritless claims concerning her honesty and character. During her time at

OWL, Day said she hoped to one day secure a larger, more modern facility for the operation. Day, who often carried a big smile and good chuckle, even when describing some of her society’s

challenges, in a previous interview said she appreciated the community for its continued support. “We want to thank everyone for supporting us and caring for the birds.” she said.

Hospice society future not clear, Ireland says SANDOR GYARMATI

What does the future hold for the Delta Hospice Society? That’s what board president Angelina Ireland wants to clarify, saying she’s hoping cooler heads will prevail in the ongoing controversy over Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). In an interview this week, Ireland said she wants the opportunity to sit down with Fraser Health and Health Minister Adrian Dix regarding the hospice society board’s decision not to allow MAiD at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner. Dix last week announced Fraser Health had given Delta Hospice Society one year’s notice that it would be terminating its contract, eliminating approximately $1.5 million in annual funding, because he said the society was breaching its contract by not offering MAiD. Dix noted that to ensure hospice services remain in Delta, the government could change the existing 10-bed hospice to public management, the most desirable option. Alternatively, the government could pursue another Delta site. Ireland said the hospice society board was never given an opportunity to have any discussion regarding MAiD or the future role of the society. Reiterating that MAiD is a completely separate stream of healthcare that’s incompatible with palliative care, she also noted that despite requests they had no conversations with the health region or ministry about the situation

other than a brief meeting where she was given an ultimatum. “We were hopefully trying to negotiate because we believed that we were involved in the consultation and that we would be given the right to mediation. The extent of the mediation and consultation was comprised of my being summoned to go to a Starbucks in Vancouver to have a meeting with one of the VPs but it was basically a one-way conversation where I was told that we would provide MAiD or we would have our funding cut — period. That was it.” In 2016, the federal government passed legislation making it legal for Canadians who meet specific criteria to have a medical professional assist them with their death. B.C. then developed a policy that requires a hospice allow patients to access MAiD if its beds are more than 50 per cent publicly funded. Ireland said Delta Hospice was willing to have its funding reduced below that threshold, and also wanted to look for other funding partners, but she said government wasn’t willing to talk. The Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care, which is adjacent to the Irene Thomas Hospice and is also run by the hospice society, is not funded by government but the society has received no assurance it would be able to continue operating those counselling services, Ireland said. The hospice society board, which is planning a rally on the steps of the legislature April 4, is also looking at legal options.

The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:

5000-block of 12th Avenue: Delta staff reported graffiti on the public washroom walls. Graffiti is similar to others found at nearby recreation centre. • Feb. 25, 9:54 a.m., 5000-block of Cedar Springs Drive: Complainant reported finding damage to the rear lights of his Ford truck. Mischief likely didn’t occur at his residence as there was no glass residue on location. The account was closed and funds frozen. Equifax and Trans Union advised. • Feb. 29, 9:48 p.m., 5000-block of Canoe Pass Way: A security operations employee contacted police about a man who allegedly removed the packaging from some goods, and then left the store with the goods, without offering payment. Police arrived on scene shortly thereafter and observed a male matching the description of the suspect walking inside the mall. Police located the property on the man, and advised him he was under arrest for theft. Total value of stolen goods was approximately $106. The man will be appearing in court in April and was released on condition that he not attend the mall again.

She was later advised to block the phone numbers, cancel her credit cards and have her name flagged with credit providers. Money sent internationally to Pakistan, making further investigation impossible. Residents are advised to never send their personal information to any institution, unless they initiate the call, after ensuring it is a verified number. • Feb. 29, 1:05 p.m., 4700-block of 53rd Street: Complainant reported that sometime overnight the window on the passenger side of his truck was smashed. Nothing taken from the glove box. Truck was parked in a secure underground parking garage with restricted access. No signs of forced entry or damage to parkade. don’t think it was any coincidence that Health Minister Adrian Dix, not a representative from Fraser Health, was the one to make the announcement last week that the contract with the Delta Hospice Society was being terminated. Dix knows his government’s position on the contentious issue of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) is in step with the majority of the public so it’s not surprising he’d seize the opportunity to score some political points, which it appears he did judging by the generally favourable reaction he received on social media. Political opportunism aside, the announcement last Tuesday seemed inevitable after an anti-MAiD board was elected at the society’s AGM last fall. After three years of taking a waitand-see approach in terms of Delta Hospice’s position on MAiD, it became clear the society wasn’t going to be compliant with Fraser Health policy, leaving Dix and the health region little choice. It’s truly unfortunate it’s got to the point where it appears government will assume control of a facility that was built through a community-wide capital campaign a decade ago. It was also disheartening to hear the minister say that even if a new, more MAiD-friendly board took over that Fraser Health would still terminate the contract as it wasn’t prepared, and understandably so, to be caught in the middle of what could be an ongoing power struggle. Dix also knew it would score points to announce that hospice beds would continue to be available locally even after the society’s contract to operate the Irene Thomas Hospice runs out a year from now. The worst case scenario was that somehow the building would be shuttered, but the health minister has assured the community that hospice care will continue to be offered. As this saga dragged on it became clear the stance taken by the society was out of step with the majority of the public who see MAiD as a compassionate option that’s not incompatible with palliative care. The society’s new board rolled the dice by taking the opposite position, which meant is was only a matter of time before Fraser Health responded. That other shoe dropped last week and while it landed with a thud, it wasn’t government that ended up looking bad.

Delta not keeping up with other cities to meet housing demand

I

t is certainly a tale of two cities. You can be for or against rezoning, densification and creating housing choice. That is fine. It is quite interesting, regardless, to note how development applications in the cities of Surrey and Delta played out last week. Last Monday, the City of Surrey gave first and second reading to Century Group’s Holland Parkside proposal. The plan calls for a 19-storey, 204-unit purpose-built rental building, a 10-storey office tower, a 42-storey condominium building and a 36-storey condominium building. The King George Boulevard frontage would have retail and commercial storefronts while the courtyard within the three-acre site would be richly landscaped with an emphasis on food and urban agriculture. You will recall that Delta council recently turned down an application for an additional tower on Scott Road. Delta has a plan for this corridor which makes sense. The developer initially proposed a much more modest application but was encouraged to meet the scale of the earlier Delta Rise project that was endorsed by former mayor Lois Jackson’s council. The former mayor voted against the second tower oddly enough. She cited verbiage from the urban planning think tank Sustainable Cities Collective

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

(now Smartcitiesdive), suggesting many areas in America with high-rises ended up like “ghettos and bad areas that no one could maintain.” If you’ve had the opportunity to drive around Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey you will have seen the successes of Brentwood, Lougheed, Central City and other transit-oriented hubs that are meeting housing demand and building sustainable neigbourhoods. Having lived in a high-rise in Vancouver’s West End for several years, I can say that was one of the best times of my life and I would definitely consider it again. Scott Road needs a clean-up. Back to South Delta where a public hearing was held last Tuesday regarding a 40-unit townhome development application on 57th Street. The subsequent vote by council denied the application in a 4-3 margin. Density, traffic, infringements on

public domain and, of course, affordability were the major concerns despite the positives of the proposal, including its proximity to the Ladner bus loop. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos went on the record to say that she “wants to support affordable housing in Ladner. Show me how we can do that.” The average cost to build around 10 years ago was about $200 per square foot. Today it is pushing the $400 mark. Developers have to make money. Every business does. The median household income in Delta is $92,000. To qualify for a $750,000 townhouse, you will need to put $50,000 down and fork out something in the neighbourhood of $3,300 a month for a 25-year mortgage at three per cent. For a young person or family, these are daunting and discouraging numbers but are clearly illustrative of the paradox in the quest for the magical and clearly illusive concept of affordability. With densification out of the picture in the Tsawwassen town centre for the foreseeable future, housing stock will not be able to keep empty nesters and young people in our communities which does not bode well on many levels. Our ‘corpocratic’ rulers only interested in the economy

Editor: Re: Don’t turn away from civil unrest, instead let’s learn from it, Community Comment, Feb.20 I’ve observed over decades that with protesting against the biggest of business the only language our capitalist-system politicians speak and understand every time is big money. Although many (including me) tell our elected officials to simply deny the fossil fuel industry its further expansion, the governing representatives unfortunately are not so free to deny the politically potent resource extractors their profitable goals. Powerful business interests are pulling governmental strings regarding lands and accompanying natural resources to which they (mis)perceive an

economic, thus ethical, right, the latest example being Coastal GasLink on Wet’suwet’en territory. Not helping matters, almost all of our information is still produced and/or shared with us by concentrated corporateowned media that seems overly preoccupied with the economy and job creation and losses. B.C.’s NDP-Green government is even giving in to numerous overly (some would say absurdly) generous tax breaks and royalty-waiving (etcetera) demands by the liquified fractured gas company. However refreshingly sincere the intent of a campaigning politician and party to implement progressive policies, I see Western democracy elected state heads as basically just symbolically in charge of the most power

entrenched and saturated national interests and institutions. To me, our prime minister and premiers “lead” a virtual corpocracy, i.e. “a society dominated by politically and economically large corporations.” I view corpocratic rule as that in which the two established conservative and neo-liberal parties more or less alternate in governance while habitually kowtowing to big business’s implied or explicit crippling threats of a loss of jobs, capital investment and/or economic stability. We even have corporate representatives writing bills for our elected governing officials to vote for and have implemented, often enough word for word, all done ostensibly to save the elected officials’ time. Frank Sterle Jr.

Time for society to gracefully bow out

Editor: The federal government approved Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) some years after the Delta Hospice Society was established. This was an opportunity for the society to expand its excellent compassionate services to more people at the end stages of their lives. Instead the society made the narrow-spirited decision to prohibit these services on its premises, in opposition to the majority

view of the community. In response the provincial government has decided to discontinue its contract with the society. This result is disappointing, but certainly deserved. Let us hope the replacement services will continue the great palliative care work and help even more people by providing MAiD for those who choose, and qualify for, this option. The internal rancor and public discussion over

the past while has done significant harm to the once-great reputation of the society. Perhaps now would be a good time for the society to gracefully bow out by continuing to provide excellent patient services for the coming year, by carrying out a smooth transition to the next palliative care providers and by looking for another useful activity to perform for the benefit of our community. Terminal 2 endangering critical habitat

Editor: Terminal 2 would be built on an artificial island and widened causeway which would be almost half the size of Stanley Park. That island and its ancillary components will impact the mudflats which produce the nourishment that the western sandpiper depends upon for survival. In case you are wondering, there are a few hundred thousand sandpipers

which stop here on their migrations. T2 would also force juvenile salmon from their shoreline habitat, impacting salmon populations, including decline of a major food source for the endangered southern resident killer whales. Environment Canada last year categorically stated that T2 will result in the loss of migratory shorebirds and cause the

likely demise of the western sandpiper. The Fraser River estuary is a mecca for shorebirds. However, populations of these and other shorebirds have declined by a staggering 40 per cent since 1970. Do you condone further losses which this port will cause? Or will you just shrug your shoulders and concede that economics dictates the outcome? Anita den Dikken

Townhouses wouldn’t enhance neighbourhood

Editor: In regard to the 22-unit townhouse proposal on 16th Avenue at the edge of the Beach Grove Golf Club, we are totally opposed. There are not enough parking spaces provided for such a busy street. The density is too much for

the location, again a busy street. It detracts from the area as it is residential/recreational and does nothing to enhance the neighbourhood. With Southlands about to begin filling up we have to look at the traffic patterns and where traffic will go. Naturally 16th Avenue

will be much busier as the alternate to 12th Avenue or even 4th Avenue. We need to preserve our quality of life by trying to have accommodation where there is already traffic area access. Please do not allow this large complex to go ahead. June & Jim Morin

Four local artists were recognized last week by the City of Delta for their winning entries in the 2019 Community Banner Contest. At Delta council’s meeting last Monday night, Mayor George Harvie introduced the winners and presented them each with awards and prizes. “The vibrant designs are already on display throughout our community and they look amazing,” he said. “The goal of the Community Banner Contest is to provide an opportunity to showcase the talents of local artists and raise awareness of Delta’s beauty, culture and heritage.” Winners were selected by members of the local arts community and heritage advisory commission from the 22 entries received. Winners included Dorothy Hobbs (Heritage), Kathy Lane (Discover Delta) and Earlwayne Melgar (Child & Youth). An honourable mention

went to Ella Berkey. Hobbs’ entry, Delta: where land meets the sea, is a representation of where Delta joins into the Salish Sea as well as the history of many vessels that have impacted Delta’s economy. Lane’s entry, Home, highlights each of Delta’s communities; Ladner (through the land),

Tsawwassen (through the sea) and North Delta (through the sunny sky). Melgar’s entry, Fishing, is a simplistic view of the fishing docks of Delta as well as the birds that coexist in these areas. Berkey’s entry, The Nature of Delta, was inspired by the beautiful nature, flowers and many herons found in Delta.

Unfilled EA positions putting a strain on system, trustees told

CUPE president shares concerns over morale, working conditions SANDOR GYARMATI

Many thousands of educational assistant hours which should be filled helping students are going empty in Delta schools, a startling figure according to the union representing the school district’s support workers. At a Delta board of education budget input session last Tuesday, CUPE Local 1091 president Patti Price didn’t mince words when describing a situation of low morale, concerning working conditions and many unfilled hours for EAs. “Your EA workforce, which is over 400 strong now, is struggling to cope with the growing number of students coming to Delta schools who have complex behaviours and challenges,” Price told trustees. She was the first to talk to the board about the importance of educational assistants, an area which has seen frequent cuts in previous budgets. She said every day in Delta, on average, 13 EA positions go unfilled and some days it’s as many as 20. That’s partly because

there’s either no casual replacement for a staff member unable to attend, although many, even if sick, are too scared to stay home because they know no one will look after a child in a class, said Price. Other positions are left empty, she said, due to recruitment and retention issues. The empty positions work out to nearly 15,000 unfilled hours at the elementary level in a year, Price explained. She said that’s about $415,000 the district has allocated but is not spending to support students who need EAs in

their classrooms. “The EAs who are working shorthanded in every single location are having to pick up the work because they refuse to allow those vulnerable students to not get the help they need and deserve. This extra burden is putting more and more of my EAs at risk. Risk of injury by the students themselves because there’s not enough of them to do the work properly and safely, risk of long-term illness, risk of stress and mental breakdown, risk of burnout and risk of apathy toward their jobs.

“Delta must find a way to put these crucial staff members in the classrooms to avoid further erosion of services to those vulnerable students and their families and to protect the staff already in place from further injury or burnout,” she added. Price also spoke to trustees about other support staff, including custodial, another area she said that continues to be understaffed. She noted South Delta, North Delta and Delta secondary schools have been short-staffed nearly 700 hours combined this school year. Delta Teachers’ Association president Susan Yao told trustees about the teacher shortage situation, saying the system is showing signs of chronic wear because of a lack of funding and adequate support, resulting in impacts to teaching staff and even administrators. Last Tuesday, Delta was short 25 teachers, the same as the day before, Yao noted. The school district will find out the province’s new funding formula in a couple of weeks and will then construct next year’s operating budget.

Ladner Village will soon have something making it “Instagramable.” That’s according to Coun. Dylan Kruger, vice-chair of the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee, who said a mural could be on a large blank wall in the village by this summer. The city is currently looking into adding artwork on the wall of the Telus building along 48th Avenue that was made visible last year when the city cut down several trees that were damaging the pavement. “Delta had created a mural policy which was one of the early recommendations that came from our committee and, as part of the policy, a committee was struck with members of the art community and members of the business community,” said Kruger.

“There was a call for proposals. There were four qualified proposals that were eventually discussed. The committee has selected a finalist. It has to come to (Delta) council for final approval, but the plan is, once council gives it the thumbs up, that it would actually be painted and ready for the community to enjoy prior to the start of the summer before the first Ladner Village Market.” Kruger said a mural program is just one of several ideas his committee is putting forward in the hopes of adding vibrancy to the village. “It’s the short-term things like that which we can do that can have a big impact and really enhance the flavour of what Ladner Village has to offer,” he added. The idea of more murals for Ladner Village is also being discussed by a society that’s in its formative stage.

Almost 150 make trek on ‘Coldest Night’

More than $26,000 raised for Deltassist programs as annual walk held in Ladner for first time IAN JACQUES

More than $26,000 was raised as the community came together for Deltassist’s third annual Coldest Night of the Year walk in Ladner. Coldest Night of the Year is a nation-wide event that took place in 144 cities on Saturday, Feb. 22, which offered up ideal weather conditions in South Delta. “Even as we enjoyed the mildness of the evening, for those who are without a home and food even the mildest of winter nights is cold and lonely,” said Lorraine Yates from Deltassist. “This is who we are walking for, the homeless, hurting and hungry in our community.” After hosting the walk the past two years in North

Delta, Cedar Park Church in Ladner was this year’s host venue. Yates said the Cedar Park family could not have been more warm and welcoming. Walkers started at the church, then along Arthur Drive to Bridge Street, up Delta Street and then back to Ladner Trunk Road. Walkers then headed down Trunk Road to Harvest Drive and Delta City Hall where Mayor George Harvie and staff provided a rest area stocked with refreshments. The walkers then proceeded back to the church for a warm bowl of soup, hot cocoa and baked treats. “It was a wonderful event enjoyed by all, the meal was delicious and the many door prizes at the end rounded up the

evening,” said Yates. Seventeen teams took part with 148 walkers, 276 donors, numerous community sponsors and 25 volunteers. Yates said with the money raised last year

Deltassist was able to provide fresh produce to members of the community from the community garden in its parking lot. “Our community garden is also a peaceful spot for some of our

counselling sessions and groups to meet,” said Yates. “Recently I was made aware that our Mindfulness Group was using the garden for some of their mindfulness exercises. The garden has also

become a place of learning, we have several very knowledgeable volunteer gardeners that are working with volunteers that are new to gardening, sharing their joy for raising your own crops.” Deltassist also provided funding for underfunded home support services for low-income seniors. This year the social services agency plans to continue supporting low-income seniors with subsidies for home support, continue to address gaps in services for those in need in the community and continue to support food security programs such as weekly bread and produce gleaning and emergency food bags. Deltassist also plans to add several new raised beds to its community garden.

Four Winds’ Cheers for Children raises over $20,000 for Reach The third annual Cheers for Children fundraiser to benefit Reach Child and Youth Development Society raised more than $20,000 for children with extra needs last month. Last year’s event also topped the $20,000 mark, showing the sustained success of the event is a testament to the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. As befits a fundraiser that helps kids with extra needs, Four Winds Brewing presented the cheque to Reach Society on Pink Shirt Day 2020, a day that promotes kindness and anti-bullying. “It’s always a pleasure to organize and produce this event in partnership with Reach,” said Four

Winds Brewing co-founder Adam Mills. “It’s a great expression of community like-mindedness that allows us to showcase our passion for music, food, beer and community. We are extremely grateful to all of the attendees who make the fundraising possible, and we look forward to a few new ideas we have planned for next year.” The evening of live music, micro-brews and burritos held at Harris Barn hit a high point when the winner of the 50/50 draw donated his winnings back to Reach. Delta South MLA Ian Paton and Delta Mayor George Harvie attended the event with fellow guests and 30-plus vol-

unteers made things run smoothly. Musical entertainment was provided by local bands Olin Brix, A2Z and Star Captains. Beverage sponsors included Luppolo, Strange Fellows, House of Funk and 33 Acres Breweries, Greenhill Cider and Goodridge & Williams Distilling. Prize and event sponsors were Century Group, Inbox 15B, Glenmore Custom Print & Packaging, Galactic Entertainment, Shuttle 17, Tsawwassen Shuttles, GML Mechanical, Adcentives and Valerie Bartlett. “Four Winds Brewing shows incredible commitment to our community with this event,” said Reach development

Chairperson Kay Foord with Roberta Beaudreault (South Delta Baptist Church), Enid Sherer (All Saints Anglican Church) and Trudy Rossler (South Delta Baptist Church) at St. David’s prior to tomorrow’s World Day of Prayer service.

Three members of South Delta church congregations will take leading parts in the World Day of Prayer service at St. David’s Anglican Church tomorrow at 1 p.m. The annual worship program of readings, meditation and song will begin when Roberta Beaudreault from South Delta Baptist Church, Enid Sherer from All Saints Anglican Church and Trudy Rossler from South Delta Baptist enter the sanctuary carrying symbols of the theme chosen by the women of Zimbabwe, Rise! Take Your Mat and Walk. Kay Foord of St. David’s, chairperson of South Delta’s World

Day of Prayer service, was overjoyed when she recognized the happy coincidence that links the Zimbabwean-written worship service with the Rev. Simbarashe Basvi (future rector of St. David’s) presently serving in the Diocese of Central Zimbabwe. From distant Harare, Rev. Basvi initiated an electronic message to be read to those gathered March 6 and in which he elaborates on the Bible text. Rev. Steve Thompson, former deacon at St. David’s, will deliver the rector-elect’s communication. When Beaudreault, Sherer and Rossler carry a Bible, mat and candle to the altar in St. David’s, each will be wearing one

of Zimbabwe flag’s predominant colours — red representing love, white representing peace and yellow representing reconciliation. The Zimbabwe ensign’s seven horizontal stripes of emblematic green (agriculture), yellow (minerals), red (blood shed for independence) and black (ethnic majority) also features a white triangle (peace) on which a Zimbabwe bird is centred on a red, fivepointed star. The nation’s pennantshaped flag was adopted when the country, formerly known as Southern Rhodesia, gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1980. Refreshments will be served in the parish hall following the service.

Jesus was tempted in the wilderness. So, it would suggest there is something important about temptation. Temptation can be good. There are times when it is certainly better to carve out an afternoon and curl up with a good novel or spend extra time with family and friends. Spending too much time at work means our relationships will suffer. Resisting temptation to continue a destructive lifestyle demands an extraordinary amount of work that often lasts a lifetime. For me, the goal is to create a healthy balance and relationship with self and community. Denying and resisting temptation is not about denying ourselves pleasure, but rather creating harmony in life. Because too much of a good thing is also too much.

Dangerous ideas welcomed Delta Secondary hosting third annual festival to promote critical thinking IAN JACQUES

Dangerous ideas are forming at Delta Secondary. Staff and students from several classes at the Ladner high school are encouraging discussion and debate on important issues next week at the third annual Festival of Dangerous Ideas from March 9 to 13. The festival is an idea that originated in Australia in 2009. DSS teacher Marie Bunce introduced it to students in 2018 to challenge them to think critically, ask questions and discuss ideas. “I have been here at the school for three years now. I moved from Sydney, Australia and one of my favourite things was the Festival of Dangerous Ideas,” she said. “It was an event put on by the Ethic Centre as well as the Sydney Opera House. I attended every year. It was all about the discussion that it could generate.” Bunce said she thought it was something she could bring to DSS. “They need to be engaged in ideas and ways of thinking,” she said. “The traditional school focuses a lot on subjects and skills that need to be developed, but something that I feel passionate about in my profession is the ability to help students see things from different perspectives, so why couldn’t we

The community has a chance to get involved in the festival too through a series of events. FODI After Dark on Tuesday, March 10 at 5:30 p.m. is a special event to officially launch the fes-

tival. Students will share their ideas and be available to engage in discussion in the school library. It’s a free event, although an RSVP is required. Also on that evening, at 7 p.m., is the Pacer Pops Music Showcase — the school’s music concert which will tie into the festival by highlighting the dangerous ideas behind each of the songs performed. The concert takes place at Genesis Theatre and is also a free event.

Saturday is bees. Two guest speakers will be on hand: Julia Common at 10:30 a.m. with Hear the Buzz and Brian Campbell at 12:30 p.m. with Easy ways to help Bees in Your Garden. “Bringing bees into your garden is such an integral part of gardening, pollinating our crops and without them we probably wouldn’t have any food,” said Crouch. Vendors will be set up in the main hall, selling everything from seeds to plants and other gardenrelated items. There will also be a new vendor selling garden beds and trellises ideal for small-space

gardeners. “We will have someone doing container gardens, Westham Island Herb Farm, West Coast Seeds, and a very popular lady who sells out every year with her succulents, so it’s a great range of vendors,” said Crouch. “Our seed swap is also very popular. I organize that table. If you grew something last year and didn’t use it all or didn’t like it, you can package those up and bring it in to get something else. This seems to grow every year.” Seedy Saturday is a fundraiser for the community garden, which donates produce to chari-

On Wednesday, March 11 there will be a screening of The Body Remembers When The World Broke Open and a panel discussion featuring several First Nations representatives. Light refreshments will be available at 3 p.m. with the panel discussion from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. and the film screening from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., all at Genesis Theatre. This is a free event and RSVP is required. “We have teachers now

who have never participated and now they want to try it,” said Bunce. “If we never introduce students to having to think about their thinking, then how will they develop those skills? How will they be able to think critically about the world around them?” Visit the Festival of Dangerous Ideas website https://dssfodi.weebly. com/ for more information and to RSVP for any events.

The skilled staff will assist you the whole way through, setting up your appointment, choosing your products, professionally measuring and then installing! Tara notes that window coverings are one of the only ways for you to update the inside of your home and your curb appeal at the same time. Enhancing window coverings not only helps with the look and appeal of your home, it can also help your wallet. Certain window coverings the Anderson’s can provide help trap heat in winter and expel it in the summertime. This lends a hand in your heating bills and creates a comfortable environment for you and your home or commercial space. “We also offer a wide variety of commercial solutions and are happy to take on local bidding contracts!” The whole staff love to get involved with all of the community events and clubs that the Andersons take part in or support, especially the Ladner Business Association, Rotary Club Events, Delta Assist, May Days, and Sunfest! Tara and David also support all staff taking time during the work week for volunteering at the blood bank and food bank. The LM Vermeulen Group Chartered Professional Accountants team has been serving clients throughout BC from our office in Tsawwassen for 45 years. ver twenty six years ago, two eager career women decided to try their hand at selling cruises. Carole Petersen and Gina Holvick opened the sixth center, in what is now a chain of over 255 Expedia CruiseShipCenters North America wide. Having seen such a great success with Richmond, Expedia CruiseShipCenters, Carole and Gina decided it was time to branch out and set up their second center here in “Sunny South Delta”. The South Delta location was opened in 2011 at Ladner Harbour Center to bring Ladner the #1 Travel Agency for completely spectacular vacation experiences! We have thoroughly enjoyed becoming a part of this community. We are an active participant of the Delta Chamber of Commerce and have received the Delta Optimist Readers Choice Award for Best Travel Agency for a number of years running.

Carole and Gina have become such great leaders amongst their peers in the industry but more importantly, as franchise owners, they have become role models within the organization of Expedia CruiseShipCenters. Because of their success they are often sought out for advice from new and veteran owners alike. With a great work ethic and pride in their business it only seems fitting that Carole and Gina staff their office with only “The Best”. In our Sunny South Delta office our team has well over 60 years of combined experience in the cruise and travel industry. With this experience rest assured that you will be in good hands.

n 1998 when Dr. Crista Walker graduated from dental school, the one thing she knew was that she was tired of winter and wanted to settle where the weather was nicer. Buying a dental practice in Tsawwassen was the best decision she ever made. The community here is amazing and she has enjoyed watching her patients grow up and bring back their kids! Kids are a major joy for Dr. Crista in her office and there’s nothing more joyful than making a balloon animal for a nervous patient. This New Year’s Day a devastating fire destroyed our dental home, but it did not destroy our practice or our team. The community has rallied around us and we couldn’t be more grateful. Dr. Liat Tzur-Gadassi has lent us her office at South Delta Orthodontics and the generosity of her and her team is greatly appreciated. We are in the permit

oming from a fifth-generation farming family Danielle and Alicia Guichon understand the importance of supporting and buying local produce. In 2001, beginning as the youngest vendors at The Ladner Village Market and carrying only 6-10 items, they eventually took their business to the roadside of Arthur Drive. On Arthur Drive, the girls built a strong following and both point out that ‘our customers want to support local farmers and local businesses from their community.’ Once the girls realized that the community had a strong desire to buy Delta grown crops, while in season, the idea for ‘Backroads’ bloomed. Moving forward a few years later, the want and need for ‘buying local’ is still as strong as ever. With the opening of their produce store, Backroads Family Farm Market, which now carries over 100 items, including their own farm fresh eggs, local bread, fresh cut flowers and other novelty goods, the focus remains on supporting local. The Guichon Family built and operated this stand from 1980-1989, before turning their focus to expanding their farm. In 2014, Danielle and Alicia 2757 52 St, Delta 604. 202.9398

Chalk one up in the win column for the Delta Police Department. After back-to-back defeats at the hands of the Delta Fire Department, the DPD came away with a 7-3 win at the fifth annual Battle of the Badges hockey game last Wednesday morning at North Delta’s Sungod Arena. The real winners, however, were the cheering elementary students in the stands, some 1,900 of them from 16 Delta schools, all wearing pink in support of

Pink Shirt Day. This year’s Pink Shirt Day theme was Lift Each Other Up, a simple, yet powerful message encouraging us all to look beyond our differences and celebrate our uniqueness. With one in five students affected by bullying, Pink Shirt Day is an important reminder to practice kindness and compassion. Battle of the Badges supports Pink Shirt Day by driving home the point that although we may look different and fulfill different roles, it doesn’t mean one is better than the PHOTOS BY JIM KINNEAR

Almost 2,000 students jammed Sungod Arena last Wednesday for the annual Battle of the Badges. See more photos at www.delta-optimist.com.

Help the University of Guelph improve hearingg healthcare across Canada. Connect Hearing and Professor Mark Fenske at the University of Guelph are seeking participants who are over 50 years of age, have never worn hearing aids and have not had a hearing test in the last 24 months, for a hearing study that investigates factors that can influence better hearing. Study Parameters The researchers will examine listening in a range of situations, from one-on-one, to group conversations, watching TV and wider social contexts like supermarkets and other noisy environments, and how it effects connection and socialization.

Why Participate? It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss, but most do not seek a solution right away. In this study you’ll be playing an important part in determining the key factors around identifying hearing loss and what influences the decision to seek treatment.

Participants will be significantly adding to growing knowledge surrounding hearing loss. Why is Beach Grove Golf Club proposing to sell some of its land for development? By now most residents of Tsawwassen are aware of a proposal to sell a small portion of our land for residential development. This was a hard decision but necessary if we are to ensure the club and the beautiful and unique lands we care for are preserved for future generations.

Sometimes the right decision is the hardest decision to make. We have been dealing with a decline in membership, the result of an ageing demographic coupled with lifestyle changes and challenging economy. Today we are in a position where we need more than our existing members’ continuing contributions to assure our future. Over the last six years we have exhaustively engaged in internal consultation with our membership and external market research for alternate solutions. This work has brought us to the decision we must make and the public consultation that is before the community.

How much land are we proposing to sell? Approximately 1.5 acres - about 1.3% of our property. The proceeds will put us in a position to fulfil our selfproposed mandate to maintain our green space and other community benefits indefinitely. To ensure the club, and the greatest percentage of our green space will remain for future generations, the sale of a small piece of land is essential. There are no plans for further developments.

Beach Grove Golf Club plays a vital role in providing tangible benefits to the community. Nearly 80% of our membership live in the community and many work and own businesses here. Our club operations contribute substantially to the local economy - but Beach Grove Golf Club is more than just golf for our members. When we opened in 1929 the club became the catalyst for the development of the Beach Grove community. After 90 years we are more than neighbours - we are a part of the history of Beach Grove and why we believe our vision for our club and the community is very much aligned. While we are are trying to preserve the golf club we are also preserving the unique greenspace that we share with the residents of the community.

Our clubhouse facilities are unique and used extensively by the community. • Weddings • Celebrations of Life • Rotary Club • Chamber of Commerce • Charity Golf Tournaments • Corporate Events • Junior Golf Programs with local schools • Fund-raising for non-profit groups

How Do You Learn More? The City of Delta is holding a Public Information Meeting Wednesday, March 11, 6PM to 8PM at the South Delta Recreation Centre, 1720 - 56th Street in Tsawwassen where you can learn more about what is proposed by the developer. After the Public Information Meeting is held the Members of Beach Grove Golf Club invite the public to our own Open House to learn more about why this proposal is essential to the future of the club and ensure our continued contribution to the community.

A memorable and unexpected journey came to an end on Saturday for the Delta Pacers senior girls basketball team. The Pacers closed out their best season in nearly 40 years with a 63-43 loss to the Pitt Meadows Mauraders to finish 12th at the BC 3A Girls Basketball Championships. It was less than a month ago this team didn’t even realize what it could accomplish. From playing mostly in a tier two non-playoff league the past several years, a new tier and zone changed the program’s outlook dramatically. The Pacers won their league playoffs then clinched a BC berth with a second place finish at the inaugural South Fraser Championships. They headed to the Langley Events Centre with realistic expectations as the No. 13 seed in the 16-team tournament and pulled off a 51-42 win over No. 12 Ballenas on day two. Delta then closed out play against a pair of top 10 schools — falling to No. 8 GW Graham (56-44) and to No. 10 Pitt Meadows. The effort against GW Graham reflected what this team has been all about. Trailing 34-10 at the half, they stormed back over the final two

quarters to cut the deficit to nine points before the Chilliwack school sealed the win. “Just the heart and soul they put into this,” admired head coach Kerrie Trotman, who was joined on the bench by assistant Paige Collings. “They all play with a passion when they are out there. They want to be out there. They are happy to be out there. “It’s been an amazing and emotional ride. I was saying to Abbey (Wigglesworth) how in Grade 8 we started with six people on the court and where she and Nava (Hothi) have come in five years and what a ride we have had together. Then everyone else has come involved with the team and stepped up too.” Without a doubt the Pacers will miss the contributions and leadership of their two graduating players. Wigglesworth was terrific in the post-season run, earning all-star honours at the South Fraser playoffs and leading her team past Ballenas with 22 points and 14 rebounds. She added 23 more against GW Graham. It was Hothi’s three-point shooting that sparked the comeback in that game. She also had a teamhigh 15 points on Saturday. However, Delta will return three starters in Emma Webster, Kim Williams and Hannah

Beaumont. They all bring athleticism and a tremendous work rate and gained invaluable experience during the playoff run. Avielle Wellington, Emily Barron and Alisha Saran also will be back. MacKenzie Campbell and Kennedy Ainge showed they could contribute as junior call-ups at the provincials. Campbell, who is just in Grade 9, was impressive playing all five positions on the floor. She had 10 points in the win over Ballenas and added 12 more against Pitt Meadows. It means getting back to provincials in 2021 is certainly within reach. The experience at the LEC last week included attending the championship banquet with 47 other teams from the three competing tiers. “The girls were just taking in the whole ambience and enjoying the experience,” added Trotman. “This new tier makes it very exciting and we have a lot of numbers coming up too with a Grade 9 and a junior team this year. It’s exciting to see what is moving forward and for the future as well. “It’s a great opportunity and also to create that passion to play basketball at our school too.”

The Sun Devils earned their spot by finishing second in the Delta District playoffs then third at the inaugural South Fraser Zone Championships. They entered as the 12th seed and finished in 11th place with a 2-2 record. South Delta opened against eventual third place finisher St. Michael’s University and fell by 20 points to the Victoria school. The Sun Devils rebounded with a 57-53 win over No. 13 WL Seaton from Vernon, then dropped a 49-47 overtime heartbreaker to No. 9 South Kamloops. They closed out the championships with a 55-34 win over No. 7 Charles Tupper from Vancouver. Player of the Game honours went to Amelia Holifield, Kaija Rutledge, Maddie Dier and Emma Turner. Rutledge averaged 28 points and 15 rebounds over the four games. It was head coach Sharon Butler’s second trip to the Grade 8 showcase tourney after guiding another SDSS team to a fourth place finish at Semihamoo Secondary two years ago. She says the provincial experience will certainly benefit her players moving forward. “It was an absolutely incredible experience for the girls and their parents. They got to

The Sun Devils finished with a 22-8 overall record that included plenty of big games down the stretch. Their roster featured just one academy player but some excellent multi-sport athletes who also excel in soccer, volleyball and hockey. Many of them will be playing spring basketball as well as club as they continue to

develop their skills and learn the game over the next five months. “I am very excited to see all their development and excited for the future,” added Butler. The SDSS team also included Brooklyn Kuchma, Ella Hewitt, Keira Franta, Maddy Plante, Madison Dahl, Maggie Gower, Niki Long, Shaelyn Berger and Talia Dunsmoor

The boys will be attending a Premier League game between Watford and Leicester City, as well as an English Championship match featuring Charlton Athletics and Queen’s Park Rangers. The team has the opportunity to tour Craven Cottage Stadium — which, although it has a history dating back to 1780, has been the home to Fulham FC since 1896. They also will visit Stonehenge a UNESCO world heritage site, and explore Salisbury where they will stop at Salisbury Cathedral. The main body of this cathedral was completed over 38 years between 1220 and 1258. There will also be free time to explore London. The team would like to thank the community for their generous support during chocolate and hot dog sales, bottle drives and fundraising nights at Ladner’s The Landing Pub and Grill.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

After a year of planning and extensive fundraising U12 South Delta United leave next Wednesday for London where the team will train at renowned academies, take in a couple of matches and doing plenty of sightseeing.

“Without the full support of this wonderful community, this trip would not have been possible,” said United coach and trip organizer Owain McKibbin. The team also received plenty of corporate support from the following businesses:

WILBEE, Anne

Roy went to be with his Lord on February 27, 2020, at Delta View Care Home after suffering from Alzheimer’s for the last few years. He is survived by his loving wife, Eileen (nee Sagert); son and daughter−in−law, Terry and Judy; son, Trevor; son and daughter−in−law, Daryl and Kelly; five grandchildren, Jenny (Jeff), Rosalynn (Jason), Michael, Danielle and Evan; and 2 great grandchildren, Arya and Nora. We would like to thank the staff at Dorothy Meadows at Delta View, and Dr. Davidson, for the excellent care they provided for Roy. A memorial service will be held at Richmond Faith Fellowship on Saturday, March 14, 2020, at 1:00 pm.

It is with grief and great joy that we announce the passing of our wife and mother, Anne Wilbee (nee Rae) on February 13, 2020. Anne is survived by her husband of 64 years Stan, sister Patricia, children Carolyn, Douglas (Karla), Patty, Bruce (Dianne) and numerous, greatly loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by our daughter and sister, Christine. Born February 6, 1934 in San Francisco, California to John T and Eleanor Rae, Anne attended several schools after the family’s return to Canada. She excelled in swimming where she was scouted for the Olympics, badminton where she won several trophies and singing, which she continued throughout her life. Her powerful voice was a gift from God and she used it with great joy. After her graduation from high school Anne entered nurses training at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. while the rest of her family moved to Hawaii to begin their missionary work there. After graduation from St. Paul’s in 1956, she married Stan Wilbee on October 12, 1956. Anne supported the family while Stan completed his training in medical school. After Stan’s graduation, the family moved to Tsawwassen where Stan was the first doctor, and Anne raised their family of (eventually) 5 children. In 1997 Stan and Anne moved to White Lake in the Shuswap to enjoy retirement and in 2017 moved into Salmon Arm.

SWEENEY, Diane L. March 06, 1934 − February 25, 2020 SWEENEY, Diane Louise, (nee Maltese) passed away February 25, 2020, at the age of 85. Predeceased by her adoring husband Ed and son Leo. Survived by her loving and devoted children, Steve (Shelley), Mary Lou (Murray), Cathy (David), Ed (Daphne), Jim (Alexandra), and Erin (Sandy); daughter−in−law Shelley (Leo); sister, Doreen; 14 grandchildren; eight great−grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Diane’s proudest achievement was her family. Her indomitable sense of humour, non−judgmental personality and intuitive maternal instincts created a close, albeit slightly irreverent family home. Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Mountain View Manor (Delta) for the compassionate care they provided to Mom. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice.

She was always an active member of the church and the community. She volunteered and taught, spoke of and actively pursued knowledge of the Christian faith. She never willingly stopped learning in any aspect of life. She was a respected and consistent role model for many of the women in her life. She was always ready with words of encouragement and support and she assisted many people through trying times in their lives. Anne joyfully exercised her exceptional hosting talents and her ability to make people comfortable and welcome. She loved gatherings of any kind and was a delight to involve in discussions of faith or life in general. She was a staunch and fierce prayer warrior. She was greatly loved and greatly respected, and will be greatly missed. Services will be held at the Salmon Arm Community Church (3151 6 Ave NE, Salmon Arm, BC) on March 7th, 2020 at 2:00 PM as well as at South Delta Baptist Church (1988 56 St, Delta) on March 27th, 2020 at 1:00 PM. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated. Share memories and condolences of Anne through her obituary at www.fischersfuneralservices.com
