When you’re in the business of talking sports, how do you go about filling three hours of airtime on the radio when there are no sports? It’s a question Sportsnet 650 morning show host James Cybulski has asked himself more than once over the past month.
Cybulski, who lives in Boundary Bay, has been broadcasting the morning show from a makeshift home studio. “From a Sportsnet standpoint, life started to shut down the night of March 11 when the NBA shut down,” he recalled. “I was hosting the JCC Sports Dinner and Drew Brees (quarterback from the New Orleans Saints), here we are literally about to

start the event and it is already weird with the hand sanitizers all over the table next to the wine glasses and all of a sudden a colleague comes over and tells me the NBA just shut down. We did the show and the next day everyone else followed suit.” He said within four or five days they decided it was best to look at work-at-home protocols. “Our boss Craig McEwen

took the lead and said we need to lead by example and stay at home if we have the technology to do so,” Cybulski said. “I have the 50-foot Ethernet cable that runs through the house and into the office, so we fire up the microphones and my colleague, Perry [Solkowski], he is in Anmore and I’m in Boundary Bay. It sounds pretty smooth.” SEE SPORTS: Page 3
The Delta View Care Centre is now considered all clear. That’s the word from Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer, who said Monday the East Delta care home has been taken off the list of longterm care facilities with outbreaks as it has had no new cases through two incubation periods. “Many of our outbreaks were caught early enough and have a very small number of cases,” said Henry. “But there are still some where we are actively monitoring because we wait a whole two incubation periods before we say it is over. I think all of the effort that has gone on in those homes has certainly stabilized the situation and people are getting the care they need.” Fraser Health confirmed on Saturday, March 21 that an employee of Delta View tested positive, but that turned out to be the only case connected with the 296-bed Burns Drive facility. Measures put in place at longterm care facilities at the start of the pandemic have helped stem the tide of outbreaks, said officials from Fraser Health. “When we started seeing cases arising in Vancouver Coastal, we already implemented measures to prevent these cases in the first place,” Dr. Martin Lavoie, Fraser Health’s chief medical health officer, said recently. B.C., so far, has reported over 20 outbreaks at long-term care homes.

Re-sellers facing stiffer fines Delta police forced to seize almost 4,000 masks in two more incidents last week IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
The province has given police and other law enforcement agencies additional power to levy larger fines for price gouging and reselling medical supplies. On Sunday, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth announced that fines of $2,000 can now be issued. Citing the recent resale of face masks, Farnworth said some seedy people are preying on “collective anxieties” of the public during the global pandemic response. Aside from police, municipal bylaw officers, liquor and cannabis inspectors, gaming inspectors, conservation officers, community safety unit inspectors, park rangers, natural resource officers, commercial vehicle safety officials and sheriffs have the power to issue the fines. Last week, Delta police intercepted the re-selling of personal protection equipment, the third and

fourth such incident this month. Last Tuesday, the department’s crime reduction unit arranged to make two bulk purchases of medical grade surgical masks through Craigslist. In one case, officers arranged with a seller to buy 2,000 surgical masks
for $1,600 and in a second case, buy another 1,940 masks for $2,134. DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf said neither transaction went as planned for the sellers who both received $500 bylaw tickets for operating a business with no business licence.
She said both sellers were from the Lower Mainland. Back on April 2 and 3, police confiscated more than 5,300 masks in two separate incidents in which people from Burnaby and Vancouver were served with $500 bylaw infractions.
Leykauf said in those two cases, the sellers willingly gave up the items and did not want them back, whereas in the April 14 incidents, the two sellers did not willingly give up the items and might dispute the bylaw infractions. “This one is a bit more complicated because in this case the people did not voluntarily relinquish the masks. They were seized by police,” Leykauf told the Optimist. “People have the right, of course, to dispute a bylaw ticket, so depending on how that dispute goes, they potentially could have the ability to get these masks back.” She said the dispute period is 14 days. “We have to hold onto these for 14 days if that dispute happens,” she added. “They have the right to dispute the ticket and dispute the seizure, or one or the other. We have to honour that 14-day timeframe and after that, we will look at what agency we could pass the masks along to through the appropriate channels.”
Sports talk radio continues even without the sports CONTINUED from Page 1 Cybulski said it’s a unique world when you’re in sports talk radio without any sports. “That is the great challenge,” he said. “What is the right solution, so where is the balance of providing news or sports? Do we run Justin Trudeau? What we try to provide is an alternative, an escape. Whether it’s Ron McLean
every Friday who is a guy you can go anywhere with or Todd Bertuzzi taking questions from fans on Tuesdays. I think we can offer our own perspective on what is happening in the world. You can discuss current affairs, but also tell stories and try and have some fun. “Everyone has their own ideas. There are days I wonder what are we doing
here talking sports with no sports and other days you sit back and go, ‘Wow, that was a real fun show’ and then you say, ‘OK we had some fun, had a laugh and provided an escape for some people.’” Cybulski said it’s also afforded an opportunity to tell other stories, do some larger features and dip into the amateur sports world. “We are so focused on
the Canucks and that’s the straw that stirs the drink in this market, but I’m a sports fan… I enjoy football, I enjoy basketball, baseball, local sports and there is great stories in the community that we can connect to,” he said. “We talked with Fred Fox, Terry’s brother, to talk about the 40th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. That’s a story that still
resonates with people.” Cybulski is also the voice for NHL 20 from EA Sports, which has seen a huge surge as people find ways to pass the time. He’s voicing the game from his makeshift home studio. “It’s so unique, but as someone who has to go through the (George) Massey Tunnel every day, my commute has never been better,” he joked.

The way they provide services may have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Delta Police Department’s Victim Services unit is still reaching out and helping those in crisis. Coordinator Kim Gramlich said there’s no face-to-face contact with clients, and court attendance has dropped off, both of which is unusual for the volunteer-based group. Gramlich said they’re seeing some change in the types of calls they’re dealing with. “We are seeing familiar violence increasing, so that could be any members of the family,” she said. “Overall people have increased anxiety, more so with youth. We have made it a standard question to ask our clients about the impacts COVID-19 is having on them, so I would say a tremendous amount of our conversation is about that.
“We are hearing about job loss, housing challenges, boredom, which is a challenge for many, especially with schoolaged children. People are missing their family members and this can be detrimental when you are worried about a parent or the elderly when you can’t see them and have that regular connection. Many feel helpless wishing they can do more.” She said sudden deaths are even more challenging at this time as people cannot hold a regular funeral service or celebration of life. Gramlich said anyone can reach out for help if you are feeling: • Helplessness or hopelessness • Difficulty managing your emotions or anxiety • An inability to focus on daily activities due to negative thoughts or worries • You need help sourcing out how/where to get help for your specific needs. Delivery modelisdifferent, but access to GPs remains IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
The model and methods may have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but getting access to health care in Delta is still as strong as ever. That’s the message from Geri McGrath and the Delta Division of Family Practice as its doctors and nurses continue to provide care and support in the community. McGrath said it’s not all virtual care and doctors are still seeing patients that need to be seen in their offices. “The care hasn’t changed, it’s just the delivery of care that is more fluid,” McGrath said. “Doctors are still seeing
patients that are needed to be seen in their clinics. The best thing to do is for people to contact their doctor. If you don’t have a doctor, reach out to one of the walk-in clinics and find out how they can book an appointment either in person or virtually.” Clinics that are taking patients include Ladner Centre Medical (604-9400917), Delta Medical Clinic (604-946-7661) or Lark Medical in Tsawwassen (778-783-3000). McGrath said health care professionals are dealing with the pandemic, but also ensuring other medical issues are being treated. “I think overall the medical community has gotten closer support-
ing one another and the adaptation to changing the way they deliver has been rapid,” she said. “I’m really proud of our doctors in their willingness and commitment to provide excellent care.” McGrath said people should also not be fearful to reach out for medical care. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reiterated that point during a recent update. “I want to reassure people that if you had diagnostic tests that you have been waiting for it is safe to go for those. It is safe to call 911 if you need that urgent medical care,” said Henry. “Do not hesitate to call for help if you need it.”
Point gets acclaim as ‘safest place’ in U.S. TED MURPHY
t m u r p hy @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Dubbed as the “safest place” in the United States when it comes to COVID19, tiny Point Roberts is making international headlines. A lengthy article last week in the Guardian stated Point Roberts’ unique isolation has helped keep its 1,300 residents out of the crosshairs of the coronavirus pandemic so far.
The American peninsula south of Tsawwassen has caught the attention of news outlets in North America and beyond as the Daily Mail, New York Post, msn.com and Travel + Leisure, among others, have all highlighted the situation. “It’s probably the safest place to be in the country,” Pamala Sheppard, who has lived in Point Roberts since 1989, told the Guardian.
“Because our borders are shut, we’re like an island right now,” she added. “We’re like an island with no boats.” Residents of Point Roberts have largely been cut off since a temporary ban on all non-essential travel across the border was instituted last month. The Daily Mail’s story says there have been no coronavirus cases reported among residents of Point Roberts.

Skirl of the pipes adds to nightly salute in Ladner IAN JACQUES

The pipes have been calling out in support of health care workers. For the past few weeks the 4900-block of 47A Street in Ladner has had the sounds of bagpipes play out during the nightly 7 p.m. salute. Quinn Provost, a first responder and area resident, is a retired member of the Delta Police Pipe Band. “I just decided one night that it might be nice for people stuck in their homes to hear a little tribute to health care workers, so one night I came marching out of my garage and went up one way of the laneway and back. Everyone comes out and listens and claps. My son, Alistair, who is four, comes

play them for one night, but then neighbour Laura Mantle texted me saying her daughters had gone to bed and missed me playing that first night, so I played the next night and more neighbours came out and it’s kind of become this thing that I play every night,” he said. “I guess other people in the community have heard as well. I forget that it’s just not my neighbourhood that hears it. The fact that the community comes together with providing the costumes through the Facebook page, it’s a cool thing to be a part of and just a small token to the health heroes.” Mantle said it has been extremely uplifting. “It brings us together every evening. We are truly in this together,” she told the Optimist.

Car parades re-connect teachers with students IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Teachers and support staff are missing their students, so in an effort to re-connect, a pair of car parades rolled through Ladner last Friday afternoon. After getting the goahead from Delta School District officials and the blessing from their school administrators, teachers from Port Guichon and Hawthorne elementary schools decorated their vehicles with banners, balloons and signs of love and support and drove through their school catchment areas. Students and parents waved from a safe distance on their driveways as teachers drove by. Principal Niels Nielsen organized the Port Guichon car parade that saw about 25 of the school’s 27 or so staff participate. The parade even included a special assist from Delta police school liaison program coordinator Sgt. Cathy Geddes, who took second position

behind Nielsen’s lead and was able to not only greet students but also help with a little traffic direction along the way. Nielsen said the parade was as important to the staff as it was to the kids. “It was so exciting to see everyone and felt amazing, but made me miss having those kids in school,” he said. “The best part of our job is working with kids. Port Guichon is a school that is full of laughter and community, and a staff that cares about each other and the students.” About 30 teachers and support staff from
Hawthorne decorated vehicles with balloons and messages for their students and families for their car parade. “We are getting out into our neighbourhood to greet our students and let them know how much we miss them,” said learning support teacher Kristi Schofield. “It was also important to us to demonstrate good physical distancing, so we encouraged families to stay on the sideways and their driveways.” With files from Lindsay William-Ross/Vancouver is AWESOME

t’s taken a worldwide pandemic to shine a light on it, but something has become painfully obvious over the past month or so: My life, according to many metrics, is — how should I put this delicately? — rather boring. I’m not sharing this tidbit in the hopes of your sympathy as until all these lockdown measures came into effect I wasn’t the least bit aware my existence could be categorized in such a way. Content? Yes. Boring? Not by my standards. Through the lens of others, however, I’m seeing how that could well be the case. I hear people complain that all they can do in these days of social distancing is walk the dog and watch Netflix. If you add work in the yard and barbecue some burgers, aren’t you describing a typical spring weekend? OK, I might not be that boring, but things aren’t so different that I’m climbing the walls, at least not yet. The caveat here is that that I’m one of the lucky ones who is still employed during all of this, the good folks in Victoria deciding in their infinite wisdom that it would be unfair to deprive the public of this kind of commentary when they’re already being forced to endure so much else. As a result, I’ve got that mental stimulation many who aren’t as fortunate job-wise don’t have at the moment, which, in my defence, means one day doesn’t just roll into the next so the weekend can be a time for some rest and relaxation. At least that’s the rationale I’m going with at the moment, although the longer this drags on, and the closer I get to completing the ninth season of Suits, the more I’m going to miss those dinners with family and friends, those trips to the movie theatre and those drives to new walking trails. I’m already in the throes of withdrawal from my Toronto Raptors, who would be taking care of business in the first round of the NBA playoffs about now, and I will soon be missing the horses at Hastings Racecourse, which would have opened its season this weekend. Right now it’s still relatively early days, but with the summer looking more and more like it will be a write off, fun is getting harder to find. I don’t mean to scare anyone, but there’s a distinct possibility things could get to such a point that even I could find them boring.
Socialdistancingdancekeeps us on our toes when in public
D
uring this pandemic my two-step dance moves are getting really good. Suddenly the ability to think on my feet has taken on a whole new meaning. It starts anytime I leave my house to do errands and shopping for our family. I feel safe and relaxed in my car, and I have my wet wipes nearby, but once I get out of the car, it’s a different story. Dodging away from people is a whole new sport and I’m not winning. Stand two metres apart, we are told, which is about six feet, just a little under the height of my daughter’s boyfriend. That’s easy, I can do that, yet I have failed so many times I’ve lost count. I almost walked right into an elderly man in the produce section of Save-on-Foods and then was trapped by a woman who was reaching for leeks. A very frightened woman yelled at me in a lineup at London Drugs because I was standing too close to her. “Stand back,” she shrieked behind a light blue mask. I was horrified that I had upset her and checked my space. I was not in violation of the two-metre distance, but I realized she was simply freaked out so I obliged.
Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT
Rules for the outside world are confusing. Every retailer has a different plan to maintain social distancing. Follow the arrows, stand on squares with little feet, line up outside, line up inside. There are fancy spit shield contraptions, even crudely lined up bar stools and crime tape will do, anything to keep us apart. There are also perplexing shopping protocols. Do you wear gloves and masks or not? Some stores take cash, some don’t. Use only plastic bags, or use cloth bags, but not on the counter. Stay alert at all times. This is surreal, but it’s not, it is our new reality and leaving our homes makes us anxious and fearful. Does he have it? Does she have it? Does the cat have it? It’s
an invisible enemy lurking everywhere. COVID-19, you are devious and crafty, and you scare me. The good news is because of our collective effort we are heading for some loosening of restrictions. That’s in another three weeks, which feels like an eternity right now. “It will be slow,” says provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, “with consistent adaptation so we can thoughtfully and safely reopen our society.” Does that mean I can go shoe shopping? Our leaders are cleverly appealing to our emotional side to keep us on track. Health Minister Adrian Dix says, “We must continue to make sacrifices big and small to protect one another and love one another.” I can’t think of a better motivator, and our seniors come to mind first. As we continue to improve our two-step, let’s not let our guard down when we have come this far. Remain all in 100 per cent of the time as our community needs you. Check in with loved ones, stay home, social distance and wash your hands. Final Sun Fest Antique Show cancelled due to pandemic Editor: It is with a heavy heart that I must cancel the 2020 Sun Festival Antique Show due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As the show was B.C.’s longest running and great care was taken to ensure a quality product for customers, with today’s restrictions, closures and social spacing, this was an impossible task. What started as a 14-dealer show in the late 1970s has continued, with minor tweaks here and there, to 2019. As this year’s show was going to be the last due to the aging demographic of antique dealers, I called it the “last hurrah.” Well, the joke is on me as there will be no more. Now some thank yous are in order. I would like to thank the Sun Festival Committee for all it has done to support the show and putting up with a rather “stormy petrel” running

the show. I would like to thank the antique dealers and customers who have supported the show for 40 years, especially on hot summer days. Finally, I would like to thank the staff at the South Delta Recreation Centre, for without their help and understanding, the show could not have been held. Sun Festival and I continued the tradition, with the show raising over $150,000 over the 40 years of operation. The fair also paid for the installation of the electrical drops and electrical power on the east wall of the SDRC arena, over $10,000. The Sun Festival Antique Show had a good run and now has become a historical footnote. Thank you and be healthy! Malcolm Johnston

Ladner kids lose another treasured outdoor spot Editor: Another disappointing closure to a treasured outdoor spot for myself and my two kids took place recently. The Memorial Park bike area is now the next casualty for young families. As a father of two young kids in a two-bedroom apartment, the last month has been difficult and biking has been one of our
only forms of exercise. We are now confined to the sidewalks. The inconsistent roll out of closures leaves me frustrated. We are now confined further to share less open areas. Are kids not responsible to maintain their distance? Trips to both Wellington Point and Ferry Road boat launch showed me this weekend just how terrible
adults are at this new normal. I counted over 40 people using and brushing shoulders on one dock in the span of 20 minutes while my kids played on the sand hill alone. Imagine the outcry we would get from closed boat launches? Well, kids are crying out, especially for safe places. BJ Schrag
Delta blessed with a marvelous troop of caregivers
Editor: Having just returned from an extended, unintended visit to Delta Hospital, I want to share my total admiration for the talent and dedication of all its health care staff. The doctors are thoroughly professional, competent and responsive, engendering a sense of
confidence in their diagnoses and treatment. Further, I was, and am, in awe of the tireless, gracious care provided by the devoted emergency and ward nurses, 12 hours straight, under often very demanding and stressful circumstances. I extend sincere appreciation to all of those that
looked after me; you know who you are. Their collective skills and collegiality impressed me no end. We are indeed blessed to have such a marvelous troop of caregivers there when we need them. This experience will add considerable new meaning to my pot-banging. Don Gunning

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. It takes determination, passion, ingenuity, heart-centered hustle and determined grit. The decision to close the store has been made as a result of many contributing factors which small businesses around BC are facing, the most recent of which is the COVID-19 pandemic. As we examine this decision and the past which got us here, we revel in our boldness, creativity, resilient way of being and the contributions we have made to our customers and our community. This has been an adventure worth celebrating, and we are thankful for your support. As we all go forward, please remember how critical our collective role will be in supporting other small businesses during these uncertain times. Keeping everyone’s safety in mind, we are not letting customers into the store at this time. However, we can help you through our front door, via phone, facetime or email. Without a doubt, we are living in an extraordinary time, and I am encouraged to see how we as a collective community are coming together to support each other through the unprecedented challenges presented by COVID-19. Over the course of my career, I have responded to crises such as SARS, H1N1 pandemic, avian influenza, Ebola and opioid overdoses. These emergencies can test the capabilities of the health system and at times our society to reveal our vulnerabilities. At the same time, we can apply the lessons learned from these experiences to address present and future concerns when they arise. Over the past several weeks, I have spoken to our leaders, staff, medical staff and contracted staff both in the frontlines and behind the scenes. Pandemic brings out best and worst in people

CHIEF NEIL DUBORD
As we all grow more accustomed to the changes made necessary due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe it is important to update the community on the status of your police department and what we are seeing in the community. A crisis such as this, more often than not, brings out the best in people. We have seen neighbours helping neighbours, we have seen tight bonds being formed in families resulting from more time together, we have parents working with their children to ensure they continue to learn at home, and we have seen city and social services expand their outreach in all areas where people may be isolated or struggling. Travelling through our
neighbourhoods it’s also nice to see the obvious signs of support for frontline workers, such as chalk drawings on the sidewalk, hearts in the window or hanging from trees. However, when I say “more often than not,” there is an element of society that is taking advantage. Some people are using this crisis as an opportunity to do their dirty work. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has warned that criminals are using the pandemic as a chance to defraud and victimize people. The Ontario Provincial Police issued a warning about companies offering fake COVID-19 tests, and selling unproven drugs, as well as scammers impersonating Public Health Agency of Canada to glean personal information and credit card numbers. The Competition Bureau of Canada is fighting misinformation such as text message and email scams, and has issued 17 compliance warnings about misleading or false claims about masks, air purification filters and health. sonal information. And other criminals have used COVID-19 as a lure to deploy ransomware for payments; healthcare and other essential businesses are being targeted and there are reports that over 13,000 malicious websites are using COVID-19 within their domain names. Suffice to say that now, more than ever, is the time to be extremely vigilant. In Delta we have investigated break-ins to vacated
commercial premises, COVID scams such as selling protective masks at exorbitant prices, and even people threatening or actually coughing or spitting on our officers when we are interacting with them during an investigation. How are we continuing to deliver services during COVID-19? The Delta police has had a pandemic plan for many years. When the
threat of COVID-19 began in January, we reviewed our plan and refreshed it based on three fundamental principles: 1. Maintain service levels and meet community expectations; 2. Minimize spread of virus and protect our officers and staff by mitigating exposure; 3. Increase capacity and flexibility in deployment for the new reality for different calls for service.
The pandemic plan and the business continuity plan that accompanies it is iterative and constantly changing. These plans have served us well and will continue to guide the DPD in these uncharted waters. Although no one can predict what the future holds, I can say the Delta police will be here to serve this community. We will remain flexible and open to ideas and suggestions.

Have you ever been to a celebration of life and thought, “Wow, what great stories, but I wish I knew more.” I know I have. This pandemic has brought anxiety and uncertainty, but it’s also brought opportunity. Some of us are losing something far more valuable than summertime on the deck with friends and a bottle of wine. We’re losing the invaluable stories of our family histories simply because we’ve never taken the time to gather them. Well, holy Chardonnay Batman, time is something we’re not short of these days, right? Think about this: We pass down our valuables in our will, but shouldn’t we also pass down our values and experiences? You know, all those things that will cause our descendants to say, “Ah, that’s who we come from!” The photo on this page is of my great grandparents. They emigrated from Cork, Ireland to a boggy, mosquito-laden plot of land in north Ontario. They came with five kids and had five more (Irish Catholic, methinks). I would love to know more about their lives; how they lived, the hardships, the joys. But they didn’t leave us any stories. They didn’t have the technology and they were probably illiterate anyway. You may have heard the phrase: “Stories have to be told or they die. And when they die, we can’t remember who we are

I used this method to produce a book about my father’s heroic war experiences. I talked to Dr. Marshall Duke of Emory University in Atlanta on our podcast (www.legacycafe. org). This was the finding of his study on children and stories: “Family stories are a critical part of adolescents’ merging identity and well-being. Teens who knew more stories about their extended family showed higher levels of emotional well-being, with higher self-esteem, better family functioning, greater family cohesiveness, lower levels of anxiety, lower incidence of behavior problems and higher levels of identity achievement.” This pandemic is helping us confirm what is most important in our lives. Volunteers deliver on laundry bags request for hospital workers ELIZABETH MURRAY
Optimist contributor
Within just 10 days, members of Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society and their friends produced 564 washable laundry bags in response to a request from hospital executive director Teresa O’Callaghan. It did not take long for the director’s coronavirusrelated appeal to jumpstart sewing machines in the homes of Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta volunteers once Auxiliary past-president Yvonne Chard and communication unit coordinator Youla Thomas sounded the alert. Sewers known to both women were enlisted to augment Auxiliary members, while a few others from the wellestablished Pillow Pals team moved temporarily from comfort pillows to this new cause. Together, 12 Auxiliary volunteers and 12 friends
and neighbours set about repurposing bed sheets, pillow cases and fabric into drawstring laundry bags. These reusable cloth bags will enable hospital staff to safely transport their work-wear to and from home in order to launder their personal protective garments (intact) and reduce the volume of disposable plastic bags currently being used for this purpose. While the Auxiliary members did the bulk of the sewing — one prolific stitcher made 72 bags — it was an all-round team effort. Jean Evans sorted through fabric and other supplies at the thrift store, Thomas distributed the material and collected the finished articles, and Cathy Bailey delivered the hand-crafted laundry bags to Delta Hospital. This new way of helping hospital workers is another example of new thinking in a new reality.

East Ladner youngsters put their heart into art project TED MURPHY
t m u r p hy @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
An East Ladner girl’s desire to thank front line workers as well as the rest of us for following social distancing protocols turned into quite the neighborhood art project last week. Nine-year-old Sophia Batista had initially started chalk art and made a stained glass chalk window when a neighbour asked her to make a heart in the middle of 63A Street. What happened over the next five days was really magical, says Sophie’s mom, Cari HawthorneBatista. Many of the children in the neighbourhood were interested in participating in the project but COVID19 social distancing protocols made that a challenge. Thankfully, the heart was large enough that siblings from three households were able to work on it together while still maintaining social distance.

Delta South MLA offers his perspective on how COVID-19 has changed BC Agriculture A
s the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold across our country and the world, we are only now starting to realize the full impact and long-reaching effects that it will have on our economy. This unprecedented crisis has brought tourism to a halt and lead to the closure or partial closure of nearly 80 per cent of Canadian businesses. But what many do not realize is the dramatic impact that COVID-19 is having on agriculture here in BC. Farmers are experiencing unprecedented labour shortages, disruptions in the packing, processing and transportation sectors, and increasing domestic and international market uncertainty. These fears are resulting in difficult decisions about which crops to grow and whether or not to leave fields fallow for the season. The Canadian Federation of Agriculture cautions these compounding challenges could result in a decrease in the amount and quality of food in grocery stores and higher prices in the months ahead. It is imperative that British Columbia’s government work with federal counterparts and industry partners to help to re-stabilize our province’s agriculture industry. To whether this storm and ensure the security and longevity of our local food system, BC’s agriculture industry must
become more self-sufficient. As the old proverb goes, “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Pre-emptively, BC should prepare for future interruptions in the international food supply chain, as COVID-19 has made us realize just how reliant we are on food imports. We can no longer rely on imports of meats, fruits, and vegetables from other countries like China, the United States and Mexico. We need to incentivize both buying and growing BC products. This can be done by utilizing more of BC’s crown ALR land and transitioning it into better and more efficient food production uses. More homegrown vegetables under glass is also to be considered, as well as increased opportunities to butcher, process, and package BC beef, pork, lamb and poultry. Every crisis in our nation’s history has spurred innovation. Let’s utilize this opportunity to remediate and revive British Columbia’s agriculture industry. Now is the time to consider bold ideas rooted in new technological developments. Vertical farming, for example, could be utilized to maximize crop yields and reduce the carbon footprint of food transportation in increasingly urban areas such as Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria. The biggest barrier to vertical farming
is start-up costs. Our Ministry of Agriculture could play a pivotal role helping to fund research and development in this exciting new industry. Recently, BC’s new Food Security Taskforce recommended a certain amount of ALR land be set aside specifically for agricultural-industrial use. This will be critical if BC is to bolster our packing and processing industries, as well as to provide local cold-storage facilities to help keep produce fresh, retain its value, and increase its shelf life.
Ian Paton
Additionally, we need to allow farm families to be creative and entrepreneurial in order to come up with supplemental income to support their farm operations. I get concerned when out-of-the-box ideas like festivals, processing facilities, eateries, roadside stands, and cafes are shut down by the Agricultural Land Commission. Agritourism is essential in this province. These activities should be encouraged, not regulated into oblivion.
MLA for Delta South 604-940-7930 ian.paton.MLA@leg.bc.ca next generation of growers, ranchers, greenhouse operators, hobby farmers, and community garden enthusiasts.
Finally, if we are to truly take control of our own destiny when it comes to the preservation of our food system, we must invest heavily in education programs. Let’s re-establish farming as a subject of inquiry in our schools, and expand the offering of post-secondary programs in agriculture, horticulture, and agronomy. Let’s raise up the
The time has come for BC to diversify its agriculture economy to better equip future generations of farming. Agriculture has been labelled as an essential service during this crisis and we need to ensure that it is treated as such, for the good of all British Columbians.

moments show us how Jesus lived. That He valued being with God and that He found God’s presence when He was away from other people. “Solitude well practiced will break the power of busyness, haste, isolation, and loneliness. You will see that the world is not on your shoulders after all. You will find yourself, and God will find you in new ways.” Dallas Willard There is no science or formula to this, but below is a short guide to help you try it out: 1. Pick a time and place. 2. Remove digital distraction. 3. Begin with prayer. 4. Abide/stay there. 5. Commit. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. James 4:8

I remember life before constant digital noise. No inbox pings, Twitter tweets or Instagram notifications. Because of the COVID-19 virus, our culture is pulled toward distractions like: binging Netflix shows, scrolling through endless news feeds and checking every two minutes to see if we have a new notification. I’m not against digital additions to our lives, and I am not sure if it will have a negative effect. I get enormous benefit from my iPhone, but I’ve also found it to be a constant distraction. Distraction isn’t new, but it’s in our pockets now. What do we do with distractions? In Luke chapter 4 Jesus is “led around by the Spirit in the wilderness.”

Make your mark on history.
A
century ago Delta was without a newspaper. The shuttering of the Delta Times in 1914 left a void in the community meaning shopkeepers couldn’t reach customers, government couldn’t communicate with constituents and residents had a hard time finding out what others were doing. The Delta Board of Trade, the predecessor of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, saw the negative impact the lack of a newspaper was having on Delta and reached out to the Dunning family, publishers of two papers in Alberta, to start one here. The first issue of The Weekly Optimist was printed on March 23, 1922. Over the past 98 years the Optimist has chronicled all the big, and many of the small, events that have shaped this community, from the fire that wiped out half of Ladner’s Chinatown to the building of the Boundary Bay Airport to support Second World War efforts. The Optimist was there when the George Massey Tunnel opened and documented the subsequent building boom that took this place from a quiet farming and fishing village to a bustling suburb. The Optimist has covered all that matters to the people of Delta over the years and continues that today with extensive reporting, both in print and online, on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the pandemic has exacted a significant financial toll, forcing many of our advertisers to close their doors until this storm has passed, which in turn has had a considerable impact on our operation. In this time of uncertainty, we are reaching out to those of you who find value in local, community news to make you this offer;
All individual readers who contribute to the ongoing legacy of community news in South Delta will be honoured with their names published on the front page of The Optimist on May 7th. Your contribution, however large or small, will enable us to continue delivering reliable and credible news to you – our friends, our family and our neighbours. This newspaper will become a permanent record of our community standing together, as we always have. Contributions may be made at support.delta-optimist.com, or if you prefer not to donate online, you may call 604-946-4451, or mail a cheque to 5008 47A Avenue, Ladner, BC, V4K 1T8.

DELTA WEST
STEBBINGS, Mark R. April 6, 1977 − April 11, 2020 It’s with great sadness we announce the passing of Mark on April 11, 2020, after a valiant fight against cancer. He is survived by his mom and dad (Linda and Bob), his brothers (Bruce and Scott), and their families (Cara, Cohen, and Colin and Kathryn, Olivia, Isabelle, Hudson, Jaxon, and Beau), as well as loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. After growing up in the Lower Mainland (Tsawwassen), Mark moved to Edmonton to start his career as an air traffic controller. Mark was an avid athlete; he grew up playing hockey, basketball, golf, and baseball. As an adult, he took up running, where his determination led him to qualifying and running in the 2018 Boston Marathon. He always lived life to the fullest and loved travelling, especially to Hawaii and other warm destinations. A passionate sports fan, he’d often travel to watch the Seahawks or Canucks play when they were on the road. Among his travels were road trips to see the Seahawks’ first Super Bowl win in New York, a playoff game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, and a Canucks playoff game in Chicago. He was an amazing son, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

A44 The Delta Optimist April 23, 2020
You’ve supported us. Now let us support you. The Chancey Real Estate Group is donating a portion of our existing weekly advertising space to help South Delta’s small businesses and charities get their messages out while times are tight. Please call Bob at 604-946-8899 if your business or charity could use the exposure.
We are here, we are helping! We are still providing services to our clients, in some cases in an alterative ways:
We have new services that respond directly to the COVID-19 crisis:
• Counselling is happening daily by phone.
• We are calling seniors that are home isolating at this time to check in.
• Seniors phone shopping is still running every Tuesday and Wednesday. • Daily phone support for seniors is still running. • Some of our Better at Home services continue, such as Yard Work.
• We are offering our Shop & Drop shopping programs for seniors that are self isolating. • We have stepped in to operate a temporary North Delta Food Bank.
If you would like to donate toward the measures Deltassist is implementing to help our community during this crisis here is a simple solution: We have an amazing opportunity to maximize donations to assist programs that are directly in place to deal with the situations arising due to the COVID-19 crisis. Gore Mutual Foundation will be matching any COVID-19 response donations that are made through the following link until April 30.
