Safety is key when re-opening City devising plan to be ready when OK given for parks and recreation facilities IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

It will be a coordinated effort between multiple agencies to ensure the safest way possible to open up city recreation facilities and parks. That was the message from Delta Mayor George Harvie and Metro Vancouver board chair Sav Dhaliwal during Delta’s seventh virtual town hall last Thursday morning. Harvie was asked when recreation facilities would re-open in Delta. “We have to wait for direction from the provincial government,” said the mayor. “I know our MLA, Ravi Khalon, is working with Victoria on this right now. I know chair Dhaliwal has some information too. We are waiting for that.” Harvie put forward a motion that was approved by Delta council last week that requests staff work with the union and occupational health and safety committee to make modifications to all facilities. “The days of open counters are gone,” he said, “so we want to have these all prepared and ready to open up as soon as possible, but they have to be

safe both for our employees and our customers.” Dhaliwal said Metro Vancouver is anxious to get all facilities open, but the biggest challenge continues to be physical distancing, which will have to continue for the foreseeable future. “Our staff is working

with provincial Health Ministry staff to make sure that we have proper guidelines and some of the precautions that we have to take,” he said. “I recognize that some facilities are opening, like golf courses, and we had to change extensively how we could open them safely…

the challenge for the staff is creating an environment that is safe. Social distancing will not go away when we open up these facilities. It will be a gradual opening.” Harvie said all Metro Vancouver cities are working together to share information on best practices

in a coordinated effort to re-open. Dhaliwal also addressed the situation at Delta’s two Metro Vancouver parks, Boundary Bay and Deas Island. “This is something we had worries from day one. The Easter long weekend was a time period where we expected crowds to gather and we took advice from Mayor Harvie to ensure safety for people,” Dhaliwal said. “Yes, we recognize how important it is for people to go into the parks and enjoy the open air and exercise, but it has to be done effectively and safely and that wasn’t working well, so we made temporary arrangements to close them during the long weekend. “Now we opened them up partially and it has been reasonably working well. Parking lots have been monitored and closed so we don’t have people coming from all over the region and this will continue for a while until we recognize that, yes, the spread of coronavirus is under control. We are taking direction from the provincial health officer and staff accordingly and try to keep the parks open.”

First responders rescue boys stuck in Boundary Bay IAN JACQUES

Two Delta firefighters are being praised for their swift actions to rescue two young boys stuck in Boundary Bay last week. According to Delta police, officers were

contacted regarding two youths in distress about 100 metres off shore near 3rd Avenue and Centennial Parkway last Monday. “Due to the shallow waters, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre could not assist so Delta police

and Delta fire headed out to the scene and managed to locate a small boat nearby,” stated a post on the police department’s Facebook page. “Two Delta firefighters loaded their emergency equipment into the boat and rowed out to rescue the

boys. “The boys were returned to shore safely to the care of their mother. Apparently they had been playing on the beach at low tide, boarded the boat, but lost track of time and became trapped when the tide came in. The boys

Bylaws dep’t finds most COVID-19 compliant

Officers are typically issuing warnings, but one nail salon in Ladner has been given $500 fine IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

It’s been a busy month and a half for Delta bylaws staff as officers have been forced to deal with a new stream of calls due the COVID-19 pandemic. Hugh Davies, manager of bylaw enforcement, said the pandemic has seen the department answer a variety of new calls while also maintaining city services and its usual calls for service. Davies said there have been a lot of calls from the public notifying the city of non-compliance issues. “We’ve had a few nail studios — one in Ladner and two in North Delta — which closed and then we got reports that they

were trying to open again,” he said. “We’ve issued a number of warnings; one in Ladner was given a $500 fine. We know these are businesses and their livelihoods are at stake, so we try to deal with it by way of warning in a reasonable manner, but sometimes you have to take further action. “Luckily most of the businesses have been very compliant and we haven’t had too many issues where we have had to issue fines.” Davies said there have also been lots of social distancing checks in public spaces such as parks, along the dike and at sport courts and fields. “There has been lots of that. Where we have seen a need for signage we have

done that,” he said. “Skate parks were an issue in the beginning where we would go out and speak with the youth and then they would be back a short while later, so we had to get police involved a bit and it’s not

an issue anymore. “Getting messages out about the need to social distance was a challenge in the beginning, but in general now people have been following the rules.” He said in March as the

It’s been a mixed bag from COVID-19 questions to general queries around city services. The City of Delta established a call centre March 27 that has been open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. seven days a week. Director of planning Marcy Sangret told the Optimist the city is pleased with how the operation has been working. “We have always taken calls from the public during normal business hours, but at the end of March we launched the call centre, which included coverage of the weekends,” said Sangret. “The call centre has been running out of a combination at city hall Monday to Friday and remotely on Saturday and Sunday.” Sangret said call volumes have varied. “We certainly get more calls Monday to Friday

Davies said on top of all the COVID-19 calls, bylaws officers are still responding to general calls such as animal control and renewing business licences. “Everyone has a pretty full caseload,” he said. “We have six officers working from about 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day with three on during the day and three at night. It’s been a busy time for sure.” As the province begins to announce its re-opening plans, Davies said Delta’s bylaws department will assist in any way possible. “It’s going to be mainly educational, but whatever the order is we will assist the owners of that business to get it in place,” he said.

orders came out from the provincial health officer, bylaws staff was tasked with different notifications to make. “For example, there was the order about personal care facilities, gyms, yoga, hair stylists, massage, which are all physical contacts, so we check all the business licences and go to visit all of those establishments and provide them with the notice and the new restrictions,” Davies said. “We also visited all the grocery stores to give them information and give them directions on how to handle social distancing. We recommended the markers on the floors, wiping and sanitizing shopping carts and shopping baskets.”

and that includes calls on day-to-day business not related to COVID-19. On the weekends we have fewer calls and we still get calls not related to the COVID-19 situation and our staff try to manage those calls if they come in on the weekend,” she said. “We have everything from a dozen calls on some days to upwards of 50. We had a lot of calls over the Easter long weekend and it has gone down a bit as people have settled in.” Sangret said calls about COVID-19 have ranged from what’s open to the now-cancelled Spring Clean-Up and other city services. “There have been other questions about how things can be opened, as well as bylaw infractions and how people can do business online such as paying their bills or pick up blue recycling bins,” she said. Potato growers feel pandemic’s pinch With many restaurants now closed, product continues to pile up in storage SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Restaurant closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic is putting the squeeze on Delta potato growers, but hopefully a just announced federal program can ease that pressure. BC Fresh chairman Pete Guichon said while stores continue to sell locally grown reds, yellows and other varieties, Kennebec potatoes, which are almost exclusively in this province grown in Delta, have piled up in storage. That variety is primarily used for French fries and dishes in the restaurant industry. A lifelong farmer and member of the historic Delta farm family, Guichon of Felix Farms is the biggest potato grower among several longtime farm families growing the product locally. “The other varieties that sell retail are doing well but it’s the food service industry that concerns us the most,” Guichon said. He said it’s a problem growers are facing throughout North America, but for the time being the 900 tonnes he has in storage, which would have been moved out by this month, may still be around until August. While the potatoes store well, they would not be ideal if kept much longer, he said. What’s more, an upcoming fresh crop of Kennebecs could be added to that stored supply, creating an unwanted glut. “We feel pretty confident keeping them until the end of May and into June but this year we’ll have potatoes until the end of July. That’s what our numbers are showing now and it’s a risk but we don’t have a heck of a lot of choice. I’m more concerned with the product I have in the ground right now that will be ready at the end of July,” said Guichon. While it’s too soon to panic or make dire predictions, the sooner things can open up the better, said Guichon, adding he may still end up with too much product if restaurants can only allow limited seating for any lengthy period. “It’s not just potatoes but anything to do with restaurants like cabbage growers. Keeping it Simple®

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU Unprecedented times inspire us to come together in unprecedented ways. We’ve all witnessed the determination and heroism of frontline workers who continue to serve during the COVID-19 crisis. To our first responders, hospital staff, grocers, and essential service workers, we offer our deepest gratitude. At Envision Financial, we remain committed to supporting those in our community during this challenging time. But it doesn’t stop there. The local food bank is an essential food service for many in our community, so in the face of COVID-19, we’re donating $60,000 to food banks across the province. Actions like this are only possible because of our loyal members – to them, I offer a heartfelt thank you. Together we are making a difference. Dave Lanphear President, Envision Financial

requested police attend skateboard park due to three teenagers skateboarding despite the park being closed. The teens apologized for being there, stating that it was getting difficult with the lack of activities they were allowed to do because of COVID-19. Police agreed and wished that it would end soon. Teens cleared the area with no issue. • May 3, 2:39 p.m., Ferry Causeway: Complainant called police to report a possible impaired driver set to disembark from a ferry. On arrival of the ferry, police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Due to a strong odour of liquor emanating from the vehicle, the driver was administered an alcohol screening device test, which resulted in a “FAIL.” The driver was served a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition.

The suspect was released with conditions, and to report to Delta Probation. • April 30, 12:46 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road and Central Avenue: Complainant reported to police that a vehicle travelling westbound on Ladner Trunk Road had driven over the median and was driving the opposite direction of traffic. The complainant was unable to get the licence plate number, but provided police with a description of the driver. Area patrols were negative. • May 1, 10:45 a.m., 4000-block of Westminster Avenue: Police were contacted regarding several males drinking in a park. Upon arrival, police located one male sitting by himself on a park bench. Although it appeared the male had been drinking, he was not intoxicated to a point where he couldn’t care for himself. There were no signs of recent consumption in the area — no empty cans or bottles of liquor were found. The male remained at the park. • May 1, 8:26 p.m., 5000block of Laurel Drive: Complainant called to report that a homemade arrow had landed on a shed in his yard, coming from a nearby property. Police spoke with the amateur archer and warned him of the dangers of playing with such things in residential areas. The archer apologized to the complainant. The arrow was seized for destruction. No injuries. • May 3, 1:01 a.m., 4000-block of 88th Street: Complainant reported loud music emanating from the area, but no specific address was provided. Police attended area but no music or disturbance could be heard.

Delta police executed a search warrant and arrested two suspects in an ongoing investigation last Thursday afternoon in Boundary Bay. Speculation on social media that the arrests were part of a meth lab operation are false, according to police. DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf told the Optimist officers executed the search warrant at a home

on 66A Street. She said police anticipate they will be forwarding charges to Crown in relation to evidence found at the scene. “There is significant speculation on social media that police were investigating a meth lab,” said Leykauf. “That’s not the case. There is no evidence to suggest drugs were being produced at this site.” She said police do not believe the home poses a risk to public safety.

$40M in tunnel upgrades set to begin in mid-May SANDOR GYARMATI

Work continues on the Highway 99/George Massey Tunnel safety improvement project with several components about to get underway inside the tube. Delta’s engineering department notes the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure recently awarded the George Massey Tunnel Safety and Reliability Improvements project to Black and McDonald Ltd. Construction is expected to begin in mid-May. The scope of work includes improving tunnel drainage to reduce pooling water and ice at entrances, converting tunnel and roadway lighting to LED standard, upgrading the fire alarm, fire door, ventilation and electrical systems, and washing the tunnel on an ongoing basis. Alternating tunnel closures will be required during the work as follows: • Northbound tunnel closures between July 2020 and November 2020.

Specializing in Custom Closets and Storage Units of all sizes and budgets -Locally owned and operated - Additional screening/cleaning processes and we practice social distancing during appointments

Improvements to drainage, lighting and more are scheduled to begin at the George Massey Tunnel.

• Southbound tunnel closures between November 2020 and March 2021. Tunnel closures will be undertaken during nighttime hours and traffic will use the counter-flow lane to divert to the unobstructed side, with single-lane traffic in each direction. The total cost for the George Massey Tunnel Safety and Reliability Improvements Project is $40 million. Meanwhile, despite the situation with the coronavirus pandemic, work continues on the business case for a replacement

for the George Massey Tunnel. That’s according to the Ministry of Transportation which had planned to have a business case completed by the end of this year. The ministry notes its work is continuing toward completing it by fall 2020. The government has boiled down the options to two, one being a new immersed eight-lane tunnel and the other being a long-span bridge with the same number of lanes. Last year, a task force of Metro Vancouver mayors endorsed an eight-lane immersed tunnel.

s our federal and provincial governments hemorrhage red ink dispensing financial relief to pandemic-ravaged Canadians, it’s only natural for taxpayers to turn toward their local government with a hopeful glance. What are the folks at city hall, property owners might ask, going to do to help me get through this unprecedented time in our history? The short answer is not a whole lot, at least not compared to senior levels of government, but that’s not because they’re an uncaring bunch. Rather, it’s got everything to do with the limitations of local government, which can’t run a deficit like its senior counterparts, nor can it borrow money to balance its operating budget. That’s not to say Delta council members’ collective hands are tied, but the constraints placed on their powers by the province limit their options, including taking the just-add-it-to-the-ever-growing-deficit option off the table. Last week council cut a proposed 3.5 per cent property tax increase for 2020 in half, but that means bills will still rise by 1.75 per cent, or roughly $42 for the average home, at a time when many homeowners are struggling to pay mortgages, grocery bills and much more. The tax rate reduction was largely a result of deferring capital projects, so it’s not like it was a particularly tough choice to put off some road works and park improvements until a later date. Could council members have dug deeper and held the tax hike to zero, a suggestion made by former mayor Lois Jackson? That would have only saved the average homeowner another $42, which is hardly make it or break it kind of money, but it’s more about the message it would have sent, similar to what a temporary pay cut for politicians would have conveyed had one been entertained. To be fair, the city is facing its own cost pressures. It’s expected to see a $5 million drop in revenues from nowclosed recreation facilities as well as declines in investment income and development fees that could total almost $4 million more, which has forced it to lay off staff and dig into surplus accounts. City hall is reluctant to dig any deeper to better position itself for next year and beyond, but it’s hard to fathom it’s going to get any worse than today.

COVID-19 challenges will spur innovation down on the farm

S

pring always seems to sneak up on me. More than any other season it feels like it is half over before you notice it. It may be that this is a super busy time of the year for me. We have all kinds of veggies in school farms performing in overdrive with the good early weather and it looks like we are in for a good stretch over the next few days. I was speaking with local farmer Jack Bates the other day and we talked about markets and supply chains in the midst of unusual circumstances. Some dairy farmers would have no doubt cried over spilled milk a few weeks back as they had to dump a lot of product. Thankfully, it looks like things are back to normal now. Potato farmers are hoping we will make our own homemade fries as the processing of frozen fries for the hospitality/tourism industry is at a major low. I have been doing my level best on this front and will continue to do so. Forever. Bates noted that an early welcome to spring is producing a bumper cabbage and turnip crop, and spuds got in the ground a lot earlier than usual. The Farm Roots farm has warba and russet potatoes pushing out of the ground and the farm stand at Boundary Bay has

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

been open for a few weeks now. The farm stand will be open right up until the end of fall harvest so make sure you stop by as our organic vegetables start to make their way out of the ground on the trip to your dinner table. Although the Delta Farm Roots farm will be open and operating as per usual, the program itself has been suspended as have all of the Delta School District’s academy programs for the 2020/2021 school year. As disappointing as this is for everyone, and especially the Farm Roots students, the impact of physical distancing restrictions at the farm while bussing kids to the site made the tough decision necessary. Delta is recognized as an innovative school district, not only in British Columbia and Canada but in several countries around the

world. The suspension will only give time to incubate creative ways to enhance and build on the success of the program so that it will eventually re-open in a very big way. Teachers, school district staff and other stakeholders will spend lots of time to prepare to expand the programming for the benefit of all of us. The community has always supported the programming and we certainly need your support now more than ever. If you are a parent of elementary aged children, especially those in grades 5 to 7, you should consider reading up on the Farm Roots program at https://deltalearns.ca/farmroots/. There are a myriad of agri-food and agri-tech careers out there that should not be overlooked and that are critical to our collective well-being. COVID-19 has affected us all in some way or form. Thankfully the sun still shines and school farms in the region, big and small, will continue to provide us with fabulous produce. This setback will help us innovate further. A problem is an opportunity to improve. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Grateful COVID-19 patient happy at home after four weeks in ICU

Editor: I’m home! On March 17 I went to the ER at Delta Hospital with fever and cough and was diagnosed with COVID-19. From there I was immediately transferred to Abbotsford Hospital COVID-19 intensive care unit. During 18 days on life support, I remember nothing but I do know that my son posted my condition on Facebook. The response was overwhelming with good wishes and prayers from so many people and churches in this community and even people overseas, many of whom I had never met. This was a scary time awakening to find I couldn’t move my arms or legs from lack of mobility. The small amount of muscle mass I had was gone, leaving me very weak and

breathless. My husband also contracted the virus but fortunately a milder version. Thank you to all those who helped him during his isolation with meals and prayers for recovery. After four weeks I was transferred back to Delta Hospital and I must admit I had some reservations. How could I go from high acuity care to a small community hospital? What if they didn’t know much about COVID-19 or I should suffer a relapse? I need not have worried as arriving on the ward I instantly relaxed. Such a contrast from isolation to friendly nursing and medical staff and people to talk to and I was no longer hooked up to so many machines. Recovery is very slow and will last several more weeks or even months for

my lungs to heal. I’ve had to learn how to walk again and even swallow, making my first cup of tea in six weeks so delicious. I do get frustrated at times but then I reflect how far I have progressed and realize I must be patient. This is a dreadful virus and extremely scary. I urge all of you to take the precautions necessary to safeguard your health. We are so blessed with incredible health care in B.C. and I marvelled at the courage of our nursing, medical and support staff during this frightening time. It is not possible to individually thank everyone for their good wishes and especially their prayers for my recovery but I so appreciate all of them. I am so touched by the people in South Delta. What a great community. Kathy Robertson

Ladner Legion thankful to community for its support during difficult times

Editor: On behalf of myself, the executive and staff of the Legion, Delta Branch #61 in Ladner, we wish to extend a huge vote of thanks to our community for its support during these challenging times. The Legion has contributed to our community for over 90 years and it is wonderful that we are now receiving much needed support from the community, various organizations and our own Ladies Auxiliary. We are keeping our head just above water, thanks to the many generous donations from the Go Fund Me page set up for us by Laura LaBounty

(a huge thank you to her for doing this) and direct donations to the Legion. In addition, we have applied for every bit of government and services relief that we are able to. Our executive and volunteers, including our branch manager, have been hard at work during the closure. They have been taking care of business on hand and doing some necessary repairs, so thanks to all of them. Special thanks to Dave Olson who volunteered his time to paint the interior of the lounge so it will be clean and fresh when we reopen. Staff are ready and

anxious to return to work and provide you with the exceptional service you are all accustomed to. We are looking forward to participating in whatever may be the new “normal” for service during the restart of business activities. Rest assured, our primary focus will always be the health and safety of our members, guests and staff. Once again, thank you to all who have contributed with donations and time. We look forward to seeing you all once we reopen. Stay safe. Gerry Bramhill President RCL Delta Branch #61

Delta’s property tax hike is an insult to those struggling to pay the bills during pandemic

Editor: Re: Property tax hike cut in half, April 30 How out of touch are Mayor George Harvie and Delta council? How very kind of them to lower the tax increase to 1.75 per cent from 3.5 per cent. This is an insult to the taxpayers and business owners alike. Just in case this council hasn’t noticed, there are a great deal of people and business owners that can’t make their mortgage payments. How can they be expected to pay their taxes

on time? The City of Vancouver has moved its property tax deadline from July 3 to Sept. 30, realizing that many people are really struggling. It should also be mentioned that Mayor Kennedy Stewart and Vancouver council have taken a 10 per cent pay cut doing their part to help. Has Delta council? Maybe don’t be so quick to give yourself a pat on the back or give yourselves a raise any time soon. I do, however, give credit to

former mayor Lois Jackson for speaking out about having no increase at all. It will be noted by the taxpayers and business owners of Delta how out of touch this council is. Its actions in this period of crisis will be remembered. It seems that Harvie has only signed the back of a pay cheque and never the front. Maybe he will be a one-term mayor, but the taxpayers and business community will be watching to see what this council does or does not do. D. MacDonald

Delta’s Korean War veterans encouraged to share stories Editor: This year marks the 70th anniversary of the commencement of the 37-month-long Korean War, June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953, and the 69th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong, both of which are not well known by Canadians, nor is the Korean War, a topic of history classes in Canadian high schools across the land; nor for that matter, in the United States as well. Those two points are facts, not fiction, but both are historical points that can be turned into known facts to go along with other Canadian military accomplishments worldwide such as Vimy Ridge, Juno Beach, the Battle of Chrysler Farm, South Africa, Liberation of the Netherlands, the six-year Battle of the Atlantic and other events in which Canadians were front and centre such as the Devil’s Brigade, Dam Busters and the Battle of Britain. It is my intention, which I have addressed with Optimist publisher Matt

Blair, to commission a full-page coverage of the Korean War centred on personal comments from Delta area veterans of the war, coupled, hopefully, with support from local businesses to appear in a June edition, preferably on Thursday, June 25, the actual anniversary commencement date. To that end, I request Korean War veterans who reside in Delta to contact me at cysrcn@gmail.com within the next 21 days to discuss further their contribution. To add emphasis to this cause, it ought to be known the average age of a Canadian Korean War veteran is in the late 80s or early 90s and as the 75th anniversary is five years away, there is reason to believe not many of the 27,000 Canadian army, navy, air force, merchant marine and Canadian Red Cross nurses who served will be alive to celebrate the 75th, in that Korean War veterans, on average, die about five years younger age than do Second

World War veterans. Strange but true according to DVA records. So, the appeal to Korean War veterans to assist in addressing this oversight in the history of Canada is front and centre. When I was designated as the national public information officer of the Korea Veterans Association of Canada, Inc., I was given three tasks: [1] to educate Canadians that there was the Korean War; [2] to educate Canadians that Canada was a participant; and [3] to educate Canadians that Canadians performed magnificently. It has been a long, hard-fought correspondence battle over 30 years fraught with many disappointments but the cause remains and needs local support from veterans, media and businesses. Two persons of prominence have assisted: initially Vicki Huntington, ex-MLA, and current MLA Ian Paton. To each, I am thankful for their support. Bob Orrick

The Optimist binds us all together

Editor: It took a jolt from a Vancouver Sun article last week to remind me that I had yet to respond to the Optimist’s April 9 appeal for donations because of “unprecedented challenges” due to “very significant revenue loss from advertisers.” The Sun article noted that many newspapers have already been on “the precipice” (given heavy competition from other media) and that the pandemic crisis “just pushed them over the edge.” I was aware that many

community newspapers in the United States had gone under, but hadn’t stopped to realize how many ads for shops, organizations, professional services and flyers had disappeared from our weekly edition of the Optimist. I was startled to read that 15 community newspapers in Manitoba and Ontario had already been shut down by Postmedia Network, and realized the Optimist was truly in peril now if its staff members were already taking salary cuts or being laid off — as have their counterparts in

other provinces. Without our community newspaper, how would we learn about sports, fitness, recreation programs, theatrical productions, charitable fundraisers, service club projects, volunteer opportunities, discussion groups, school activities, community events, local authors, worship services, artists and exhibitions as well as relevant news of note beyond our boundaries? The Optimist helps bind us all together. It deserves our financial support. Wellner Gagnier

Public enjoys piece of paradise with stroll at Springs

Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the management and staff of Tsawwassen Springs during the lockdown of the last six weeks. They graciously opened

up their golf course and allowed the general public (and their dogs!) to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and nature while staying on the designated paths. I shall miss our morning walks among the serene landscape and will be

forever grateful to have enjoyed a piece of paradise during this most difficult time. The staff truly did adhere to the mantra, “We’re in this together.” Thank you. Leslie Kozlowski

Chancey Real Estate Group adapts to ‘new normal’ during COVID-19 T

he real estate industry is taking all the necessary safety protocols to ensure home sales can continue during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Market activity is down substantially, like it is in any industry, however sales are getting done,” says Linda Chancey of the Chanceys Real Estate Group that includes husband Bob and son Blake. “We’ve still got motivated buyers and sellers and we’re taking all the precautions so we’re adapting to this new normal.” She says three of the four deals they have closing this week were done from start to finish during the pandemic, proving that transactions can still safely take place at this time. Linda says they’re using Facetime and Zoom to interact with clients but also continuing to show properties in person by adhering to social distancing guidelines, wearing gloves and masks, and not allowing buyers to touch anything in a home. Open houses have been temporarily suspended to avoid crowds gathering and to ensure safe social distancing.

those who are in the market are serious buyers, not looky-loos. All aspects of the real estate transaction, from inspections to appraisals to legal conveyancing, are still taking place, although there have been some modifications in each process to meet provincial health guidelines. The Chanceys, who have sold 400 homes in the past five years, 90 per cent of which have been in Ladner and Tsawwassen, are hands-on with clients from start to finish. As these transactions are often the largest financial deals of their clients’ lives, the Chanceys feel it is important they deal directly with buyers and sellers instead of passing off that responsibility to assistants or junior agents. Because of this approach, some of their clients have dealt with them on upwards of a dozen transactions. The Chanceys are donating advertising space in the Optimist every week to Deltassist, the local social services agency that’s helping so many people during the pandemic.

They also have the ability for buyers and sellers to sign all documents electronically.

“Giving back to the community is important to us. We appreciate living and working here, so we want to do something to give back, to help where we can,” says Linda.

Opinion

Former mayor sees the value of her local paper Beth Johnson says Optimist is vital thread connecting community BETH JOHNSON

Optimist contributor

In a recent issue of this, our local paper, there was a rather remarkable fullpage ad entitled, “Make your mark on history.” In it, the Delta Optimist made a polite, restrained and important appeal to you, the reader, to contribute a financial donation to the paper to help it survive as revenues drop drastically during this once-in-alifetime crisis. The writer pointed out the 98-year history of the Optimist and the part it has played in our community. As remarkable as that is, I wanted to add an appeal of my own; an appeal based on what you, personally, will lose if we lose this one last piece of the chain that links our past to our present, and each of us to the other. Do you have children or grandchildren who play in locals sports? Do you shop locally? Do you want to know what that development proposed

The truth is, there is no other one place where we can learn these things about our community. to go in down the street is all about? Do you want to know what’s going on at the Legion, the locallyrun theatre, the library, the schools? Do you want to know what’s on offer at your favourite restaurant, your favourite gift shop, your favourite food store? Do you look at the ads and announcements at the back, the obituaries and the memorials, the anniversaries and birthdays that your family and friends, and people you’ve lost track of, post? Are you a member of one of our service clubs — Rotary, Kinsmen, Lions — and hope that others will be able to find out about your fundraiser for community works like water parks and play equipment? Are you involved in a club that is looking for members and

relies on the local paper to let that be known? Many of these things aren’t happening now, and that’s part of the problem. But just for a moment, imagine that when this is all over, and things gradually resume, there is no local newspaper to fulfill this role. Where will you hear about all these things? How will you get your local message out? The truth is, there is no other one place where we can learn these things about our community. Sure, we have the internet, and you can access the Optimist there too, but only if it’s still in business. But we need a thread that runs through the past, through the present and into the future, and that weaves its way through all our lives in one way

or another, to keep us together and aware of all the wonderful things our home town has to offer. I used to be the mayor of Delta, in the 1990s, and I can say positively that without this paper, our community would have been a different and poorer place (and as you can imagine, I didn’t always completely agree with their coverage!). To lose our one local connection now would be an unimaginable loss. It has happened in many, many communities across the country. I implore you — let’s not let it happen here. I have contributed, on an ongoing as well as on a one-time basis. Every dollar counts. Please join me in keeping our Delta Optimist alive. Beth Johnson was mayor of Delta from 1990 to 1999. Delta woman left shaking after winning $500,000 Delta’s Jolene Keith just moved into a new home with her husband, and will be able to pay off her mortgage a whole lot quicker after she matched five numbers to win Daily Grand’s secondary prize in the April 20 draw. “I couldn’t believe it right away,” said Keith, who opted to take the lump sum prize of $500,000 over $25,000 a year for life. on his tickets, so I checked mine. When I found out I won Daily Grand, I took a screenshot of the win and sent it to him and said, ‘I think I have you beat’.” Keith bought her winning ticket through PlayNow.com’s lottery subscription, and has been buying her lottery tickets online for the last four years. “I find buying online so much more convenient. It guarantees that I’ll never lose my ticket or the dog won’t eat them,” she said. “Before, my husband and I were bad at checking our lottery tickets when we went out to buy them.”

Regulations limit lawn sprinkling to twice a week Lawn watering restrictions came into effect in Metro Vancouver May 1 that limit sprinkling to two mornings a week. For residential properties, even-numbered addresses will be able to use lawn sprinklers on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 4 to 9 a.m. Odd-numbered addresses can do so on Thursdays and Sundays from 4 to 9

a.m. Trees, shrubs and flowers can be watered any day from 4 to 9 a.m. if using a sprinkler and at any time if using a handheld hose, soaker hose, water container or drip irrigation. The regulations will be in place until Oct. 15. “Long range climate projections show that our region can expect increasingly hot and dry summers

in the future,” said Sav Dhaliwal, chair of Metro Vancouver’s board of directors. “Implementing good conservation habits now will help us meet the ongoing challenges of population growth and climate change, both of which put increasing pressure on our water system. We all have to do our part and conserve water whenever we can.”

Darth Vader gave way to Chewbacca for last Friday’s walk through Tsawwassen. IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

It started with a walk in a full suit of 15th century plate armor. That was followed when Darth Vader made an appearance and last Friday it was Chewbacca roaming the streets. “That Star Wars Guy” has created quite a buzz on social media the past few weeks with numerous posts and photos of his costume walks down 56th Street in Tsawwassen. “I am a professional film and television actor and I was also a Disney cast member many years ago (before they built California Adventure), as well as acting in Disney films,” he told the Optimist. “In fact, the reason I moved to Tsawwassen years ago was the result of shooting a Disney film here. I fell in love with Centennial Beach, and thought this place is fantastic for raising a family. It’s been 15 years and I love this town.” He said he often uses his costuming and acting skills to help raise money for various children’s charities. He is also a huge Star Wars fan and has spent years building screen accurate costuming. “I decided a couple weeks ago to see if I could tolerate doing a 10k walk in my full suit of 15th century plate armor, and I was quite happy that I was able to do so,” he said. “It’s not as easy as it sounds,

adding 130 pounds of extra weight and keeping the helmet closed. The response from people passing by was incredible. Many people waved, cheered, honked and thanked me as they drove by, and took pictures from a socially safe distance. With so much anxiety in the world right now, I thought it was fun to see people happy and laughing at such an oddity in Tsawwassen of all places.” He thought it would be fun to take Darth Vader out for a 10-kilometre walk and had people waiting for him to pass by, including one family dressed up as Vader. “People have been commenting on it on the Tsawwassen Loop (new) and the regular Tsawwassen Loop on Facebook. The owner of Mario’s brought Darth in to accost his kitchen staff and give them a laugh.” Last Friday afternoon Chewbacca gave it a go, he said. Usually the walk starts at about 4:30 p.m. near Fred Gingell Park on English Bluff Road and continues to 1st Avenue, 56th Street, 12th Avenue and back up English Bluff. Chewie is 7’2” so he terminated his walk a little early in the Save-on-Foods plaza. “Chewie is a pretty impressive character to see in public. These costumes are higher quality than those you would even find in the Disney parks. They

Marathon cancellation can’t stop local runner Nichole Windblad charts her own course NICHOLE WINDBLAD

Optimist contributor

Naturally I was disappointed when Vancouver cancelled the BMO Marathon that normally happens on the first Sunday of every May. After months of training what was a girl to do in these crazy times of COVID-19 and social distancing? No medal, no T-Shirt, no stat or number would be given. I couldn’t let all my hard work go to waste so I decided to sign up for the BMO Virtual Race and designed a route around Tsawwassen, my hometown. With hours of hills, track, rain and wind behind me, I started out last Sunday at 7:15 a.m. for a 26.2-mile journey that would last four hours and 45 minutes. It was marathon No. 5 with five more to go before I’m 50. I had amazing support from my community with pit stops of warm broth

Nichole Windblad charted a 26-mile course through Tsawwassen last Sunday in lieu of taking part in the cancelled BMO Marathon.

in the morning by friends from Boundary Bay, bike riding friends that talked me up the hills and my trusty husband meeting me at stops along the way with hydration, balloons and a cheer. There were people in cars honking, others clapping on the sidelines and lots of “keep on going.” Big thanks to Kevin from the RunInn who supported me with a fresh, bright “Run Inn” T-shirt and numbered running bibs, all to help me feel that I was truly in a marathon. I also decided to support my community by purchasing everything I needed locally, either going to the stores while social distancing, using the ordering and pick up

options or having them deliver to my home directly. I was able to buy all the proper foods for nutrition and gear locally. I must thank Wellspring Health for supplements, Your Dollar Store for my running visor, Albany Books for nutrition books, NoMiNou for my leggings and the amazing RunInn for my shirt, bibs and running shoes. I was able to shop at Thrifty Foods, Save-On-Foods, Meridian Meats and Newmans Fine Foods for everyday meals, at L’aromas Bakehouse for their gluten free bread and Joe’s Farm House for all my fruit and veggies. Of course, Four Winds and Barnside breweries were handy for that nice cold beer after the run.

Share your family story and win monthly dinner at White Spot

Tsawwassen author Robb Lucy wants people to document and share their family stories — and he’s partnered with White Spot on a contest that provides a great incentive to do so. Author of How Will You Be Remembered? The Definitive Guide to Creating and Sharing your Life Stories, Lucy is hoping people that might have more time on their hands due to the COVID-19 pandemic will think about chronicling family stories so they’re not lost forever. “Think about this: We pass down our valuables in our will, but shouldn’t we also pass down our val-

ues and experiences? You know, all those things that will cause our descendants to say, ‘Ah, that’s who we come from!’” If you’ve got a story you’d like to share, enter the contest and be eligible to win a fabulous prize courtesy of White Spot. The winner will get to choose from White Spot’s On the Go truck bringing dinner for 30 post pandemic or dinner for two once a month for a year. Send your maximum 300-word story to editor@ delta-optimist.com by May 18. The winner will be announced May 28.

Celebrate mom’s uniqueness to make her day memorable

Mother’s Day is a celebration of women who devote so much of their effort and energy to their families. Celebrating mom on Mother’s Day lets her know all of her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Mothers may perform similar tasks, but no two moms are the same. Finding ways to celebrate your mom’s uniqueness can make the day that much more meaningful and memorable. Mother’s Day gift ideas should come from the heart and can show mothers near and far how much they are appreciated and loved.

Here are some creative ways to show mom that you care

Mother’s Day is a great time to honour mothers and attempt to give back just a portion of the tireless love and devotion moms offer their children. Some children provide large gestures, while others feel it’s the little things that can help a mom to feel appreciated. For those needing a little inspiration on treating their mothers in special ways this year, consider these ideas: • Make mom a breakfast in bed with her favourite morning treats. • Enjoy a movie at home with mom. Let her pick the flick and share her favourite film with you. • Agree to not bicker for the entire day, especially if you are prone to getting

into arguments with siblings. • Put together a collage of photos from moments you have shared with mom or your family. • Cook a meal together and learn about everyone’s favourite recipes or the family history. • Give her a locket with your photo inside and have a duplicate you can wear containing her photo. • Customize a coffee mug, tote bag or a blanket with a meaningful sentiment or photo. • Treat mom to a day off from her chores. Tackle all of the jobs she normally does for the family. • Bake a delicious dessert that mom will absolutely devour. • Pamper mom with a

gift card for her favourite store or service. • Prepare a jar of mom’s favourite candies wrapped in pieces of paper that have loving sentiments written on them. • Compile a playlist of songs and artists mom prefers and download them to her phone. • Begin a charm bracelet tradition by purchasing a charm bracelet and a new charm each year that represents a meaningful memory you both shared. • Write a new email each day with an inspirational quote or special words of love for mom. • Tackle a task that she may not want to do herself, such as washing the exterior of her car and vacuuming the interior.

Professional photographer Greg Schurman and his 12-year-old step daughter Ava have created a variety of interesting scenes on the pavement below their second storey Ladner condo.

A Ladner photographer has combined a love of his chosen craft, a little chalk and a creative flair to create a fun online project to pass the time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Greg Schurman, owner of Schurman Photography,

has been working on “Adventures of Ava — sidewalk chalk series” with his 12-year-old step daughter Ava. The process is simple: Schurman shoots his creative pose of Ava from up above on the balcony of their second floor condo and then Ava lies on the pavement below and

draws his inspirational image in chalk. Schurman and his wife Brigitte Schulte have also been helping with the chalk art drawing. “It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “We’re all going a bit stir crazy, so combining my professional photography skills and giving Ava a chance to get creative and

away from the school work for a bit, we went out and started doing this chalk fun. “When I look down at her she can pretend to do a scene, so I can do the chalk where she is kind of floating in the air, but she is just lying on the ground. It’s a mix fusion of photography, other images

and my own stock library. Between the three of us we have lots of neat scenes.” He’s posted all of the images on Facebook and Instagram. “We have been doing two or three a day. I have a hose nearby that we can wash it down and then we can do another one,” he said.

“When it has rained that has helped us get a clean slate.” He said online feedback has been great. “People love it. They say it’s fun, puts a smile on their face, which we all need right now,” Schurman said. “Other friends and parents want to do it too, so that’s great.”

Woodworker Peter Blair has crafted hearts in a fundraiser for Delta Hospital.

Overwhelming response for Hearts for Heroes campaign IAN JACQUES

Ladner woodworker and crafter Peter Blair has a lot of heart. Now retired after 30-plus years at BC Ferries, Blair and his family have called Ladner home for 40 years. He primarily makes artistic wood turnings, but recently used his skills for a fundraising project to support Delta Hospital. The response from the community has been overwhelming, so much so that he’s no longer accepting requests. He said he came up with the fundraising campaign from a Facebook friend. “One of the fellows

suggested we make April Heart Month and I thought what a great idea, so I put up a wood heart in our front window of our house and wrote on it ‘Hearts for Heroes’ and then I thought I could do a bit more,” he said. “So I could make a few more and make a donation to the hospital. The interest was huge. I looked around my shop and found some other wood and those went practically before I knew it and I’ve had over 50 requests. I enjoy woodworking and I like to give, but I won’t be taking any more requests.” Blair said the donation to the hospital will be a couple thousand dollars. “People like to show

their support for frontline workers, so it’s a nice way for people to show their support,” he said. “They can hang the heart in their window or wherever they want to display it.” Blair is also collaborating with Jordy Johnson of Carving Fusion and another local artist to auction off a few pieces of art for the same cause. Johnson has donated pieces featuring hearts and Blair will be contributing a pair of hand-made wood rings, while a local crafter has offered a cool Yoda with a big red heart. Blair said he will promote the auction through community Facebook groups.

In these strange times, Delta Gymnastics Society finds itself waiting for its next beginning. From a humble start in the auxiliary gym at Tsawwassen Junior Secondary in 1975, it thrived and grew for 45 years. “We began with summer recreation classes for children aged five to 12 years,” recalls Kari Cullen, founder of Delta Gymnastics. “I have seen it grow, flourish and become a staple in our community for at least three generations.” In early 2020, before COVID-19, extensive programming was offered at the gym club’s Ladner facility, from developmental to high level competitive classes, with ages ranging from babies to 95-year-olds. “We are very aware of how much our participants are missing their coaches, classes and training,” says business manager Sharon Gillespie. “Our gym has always been a family, including our coaches getting their first jobs with us who become role models and leaders, to professional career coaches that have a lifetime of expertise and coordinate

Jenn Watts and the other coaches at Delta Gymnastics are hoping they’ll be able to welcome gymnasts back soon.

our various programs, to our many involved and supportive parents who believe in the sport and activity of gymnastics, and our group of volunteer board members who care so much about our society.” Delta Gymnastics has experienced its fair share of disruption, including a devastating fire in 2002 that set back expansion plans until it moved to the new Ladner location in 2011.

Horsing Around in Delta Horseshoes bring more than good luck and serve as more than a tool for the popular backyard game. Horseshoes keep working horses’ feet healthy and safe from wear and tear while also providing support and traction. People who frequently work with horseshoes may know a lot about them, but others can test their knowledge by seeing how many of these trivia questions they can answer correctly. 1. A person who shoes horses is known as what? Answer: Farriers trim and apply horseshoes. 2. True or false: Attaching horseshoes to the animal is a painful process. Answer: False. The density and relative insensitivity of the hoof makes it possible to secure the shoes to the horse without causing discomfort. 3. How are horseshoes attached? Answer: A farrier may use nailing or gluing to attach the shoes. 4. Who invented the horseshoe? Answer: According to Encyclopedia Britannica, horseshoes are a Roman invention. The Roman poet Catullus mentioned a mule’s loss of its shoe in the first century BC. 5. What were primitive horseshoes made of? Answer: Materials included booties made from hides and woven from plants. Romans were the first to use leather and metal in horseshoe designs. 6. How many nail holes are in a horseshoe? Answer: Seven. 7. Can a shoe help improve a horse’s health? Answer: Yes. A skilled farrier can create shoes to alleviate gait flaws and conformation issues in a horse. Conformation is the outline of a horse as dictated primarily by his bone and muscle structures. 8. How often do shoes need to be replaced? Answer: Horses tend to be shod every six weeks. If a shoe is overly worn or if the toe is overgrown, this may happen more frequently.

9. Do race horses wear horseshoes? Yes. Racing horses tend to wear shoes made of aluminum because of their light weight. Show horses also may wear aluminum shoes. The material used can be customized depending on the need of the shoe for the horse.

“We are extremely fortunate that this community has rallied behind us whenever we have needed help,” says Gillespie. “We don’t know how long this situation will last but we do know that gymnastics as a foundational sport will continue to be an important physical development pillar for children, teens, adults and seniors. We do not know what the scenario will look like once we are able to open, but like in the past, we will come

back stronger.” As a not-for-profit society, Delta Gymnastics is encouraging the community’s support, if it can, through the purchase of a tile wall, returning bottles to the Express Depot and staying connected through social media channels. Delta Gymnastics is offering limited virtual free classes to those who have paid their 2019-2020 membership fees. In the meantime, the society is taking measures to maintain the 20,000-square-foot facility to ensure it is ready and safe for members, staff and coaches. “Every precaution will be taken to ensure the safety of everyone, and we will not open our doors until this is accomplished,” adds Gillespie. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back, to see all those smiling rosycheeked faces and to have the smell of stinky feet back in the building. It is funny the things you start to miss.” The society was hoping to mark its 45th anniversary this June with many celebrations. For more information, visit deltagymnastics.com.

were scared to death while the carpenter lay in the prow propped up against a pillow in blissful slumber. The friends of Jesus were caught between two crazy scenarios: a raging storm and a sleeping master. These past couple of

weeks have seemed to me like a voyage through a storm. It wreaks havoc and threatens so much of our life and even has power to end it. Yet Jesus continues to woo us into peace and to trust. He was content to move through the storm but to show his friends they need not be concerned he spoke to the wind and the waves, “Be still,” and it became calm. The safety of this boating crew was never dependent on the power of the waves but upon the presence of Jesus. So, too, we travel with Jesus through the storms of a pandemic and find rest knowing that as long as he is in the boat we are OK. Be safe, friends, and be at peace.

There are at least two people with whom we wrestle yet against whom we never seem to win. One is Mother Nature and the other is God. Fighting against either is a fruitless activity. One, because she is fictional and the other, well, because He is GOD! Nonetheless, we yell at the wind and we curse COVID-19 and we shake our fists at God in some desperate attempt to regain a sense of control in our life. I was reminded recently of a boating trip taken by Jesus and his friends and the contrasting postures among them when Mother Nature whipped up one of her fierce storms (Luke 8). Stores envision phased retail reawakening sales |

By Jeremy HainswortH jhainsworth@glaciermedia.ca

t

he canadian retail sector w ill see a two-part return to business, with essential retailers getting back to work before their non-essential counterparts, says retail council of canada president diane brisebois. the key question that the sector is trying to answer, she said, is, “how do you try to mitigate and ensure commerce with citizens on a regular basis so you know they’re safe and protected?” and, said industry watcher craig Patterson of Retail Insider, that return could be in a few

B.C. could follow Saskatchewan’s plan to reopen sector on May 19

weeks if not a couple of months. in mid-april, b.c. officials publicly floated the idea of easing restrictions by mid-may. saskatchewan on april 23 released its re-open saskatchewan Plan, which aims to loosen by may 4 regulations for medical services and low-risk recreation, then to loosen restrictions on retail services by may 19. dates for further phases of reopening have not been announced. whether b.c. follows a similar pattern remains to be seen. brisebois said provincial governments reached out to the council for feedback on how retailers could be managed in an overall return to normal.

even as restrictions ease, brisebois said, business operators are going to have change the way they operate. the changes most obvious to consumers will be those they’ve already seen – social distancing and the transparent barriers at checkouts. store traffic will have to be monitored and staff would have to be ret ra i ned on clea n i ng procedures. First, brisebois said, the curve of covid-19 infection needs to flatten. “we need increased testing before we move ahead,” she said. then, all sectors need to coordinate how they will return to business. companies will have

to ask, “is everyone involved?” brisebois said, citing the saskatchewan case. “is the chain of command singing off the same hymn book so citizens are not confused?” and, she said, bureaucratic interference needs to be kept to a minimum. businesses, she said, need cooperation rather than hindrance from government agencies and bylaw services – “they need to reach out; they need to come together.” in terms of physical operations, retailers need to deal with rules governing apparel fitting rooms, use of payment keypads and procedures for product returns, as

well as overarching concerns about employees, taxes and rent. “the greatest challenge for them is to ensure that their employees remain healthy and protected,” brisebois said. Patterson said may could be too late for businesses that were already struggling as they came out of 2019. “we did see a decrease in retail sales,” he said. “we saw a decrease in foot traffic in malls.” w hat cov i d-19 may have done to the retail sector, Patterson said, is move more people to online shopping. the period may have been long enough to entrench e-commerce habits in some consumers, he explained.•

Personal care sector to remain six feet from normal services |

From gyms to dental clinics, the ‘new normal’ will likely be continued social distancing

By nelson Bennett n bennett@biv.com

a

t some point, even Provincial health officer dr. bonnie henry – who revealed she cut her own hair during the pandemic, after ordering hair salons and barber shops closed – is probably going to want to have a professional style her hair. she may have to wait until the end of may, unless she decides hair salons and barbers can reopen sooner than that. and like so many other british columbians, henrymayalsowant to go to a dentist for a teeth cleaning, an optometrist to get her eyes checked or prescription update, and maybe work off some stress at the gym. those types of personal care services will likely reopen on a staggered basis, and none of them will be offered in a way that could be described as “normal,” say the businesses that are preparing for a green light – which is actually more of an orange light.

going to the gym may involve having to make an appointment, not just dropping in, and members may not be allowed to change and shower after their workout. Your haircut may be more expensive, and you may be expected to wash your own hair before you show up for your appointment, and wait outside until your turn comes, to limit the amount of time you are in the salon. “dr. bonnie henry’s order for our industry to remain closed is until the end of may,” said greg robins, executive director of the beauty council of western canada, which represents barbers, stylists, spas, cosmetologists and body waxers. “now, she could shorten that or she could extend it.” in order to plan for a phased reopening, the council has looked to other jurisdictions that are moving earlier on reopening and to those sectors, like grocery stores, that have managed to operate throughout the pandemic, for ideas on how to serve customers

Laila Testini, owner of Crush Hair in Surrey, has stocked up on face masks, shields and cleaning products | Rob KRuyt

again, while maintaining enhanced health, safety and sanitary measures. “there are simple things, like tape on the floor people to stay a certain distance apart, hand sanitizers available for customer use, possibly barriers between client and provider, and perhaps the mandatory use of face masks,” robins said. laila testini, owner of crush

hair co. in surrey, said all of her 11 stylists have had to take an online sanitization course in preparation for reopening. “i’ve ordered masks and face shields for all of our employees, and i’ve stocked up on all our cleaning products because i’m worried there’s going to be a run on those,” she said. in some jurisdictions, a phased reopening will see hair salons and barbers allowed to reopen before other personal care services, like beauty spas and hair waxing salons. asked if that may be the case in b.c., robins said: “i wish not, but i think yes.” if you need dental work, expect a backlog, even when dentists are allowed to start performing nonemergency dental work, like fillings, crowns and cleanings. care dyck, manager at aurora dental clinic, expects a demand backlog to be exacerbated by expected limits on the number of dentists, assistants and patients in the clinic at a given time.

“if you normally have a full schedule, your full schedule now is maybe half the capacity that it was,” she said. “so there is going to be some backlog i think, for sure.” the same may go for optometrists. like dentists, they are currently allowed to deal only with emergencies, like eye infections. devin almond, a partner at nuvue optometry in kelowna, said optometrists had hoped for a phased reopening may 1, but now expect it in mid-may. as for fitness centres, gym owners are brainstorming ways to reduce contact between members and staff. club 16 trevor linden Fitness centres plan to add cleaning staff and cleaning stations and limit the number of members in the gym at any one time. linden is hoping for a reopening by the end of may. “we’re really in the ideas stage right now of just figuring out how we keep our members and staff as safe as possible,” linden said. •

Mental Health Week

Week reminds us connections will benefit our mental health

1. The Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) annual Mental Health Week is May 4-10, 2020. • Every May, people in Canadian communities, schools, workplaces and legislatures rally around CMHA Mental Health Week. • First marked by CMHA in 1951, 2020 marks the 69th annual Mental Health Week. • Mental Health Week helps to shift societal beliefs and perceptions about mental health. It helps promote behaviours and attitudes that foster well-being, support good mental health and create a culture of understanding and acceptance. • Mental Health Week is widely recognized on social media and in the news media and with local events like open houses and speakers’ series. To respect physical distancing measures, these events will be celebrated virtually this year. 2. The theme of this year’s Mental Health Week is social connection. Connecting with other people and our communities doesn’t just feel good. It’s good for our mental health. • Research shows that social connection and social support are factors that protect and promote good mental health. • Feeling socially connected means you feel close and connected to others, and you don’t have to be in physical proximity to nurture a sense of closeness and connection. • Social isolation and loneliness are

bad for everyone’s mental health. 3. It’s common in our society to ask people how they are. Unfortunately, it’s also common not to provide — or expect — a truthful answer. • It’s common in Canada to say we’re fine, even when we don’t really mean it. • Every time we just go through the motions, we miss a chance to connect with others in a meaningful way. 4. As we face the COVID-19 global pandemic, we need each other now more than ever. It’s time to #GetReal about how we feel and lean on others for support. • This Mental Health Week, let’s say more than just “I’m fine.” Let’s have real conversations with our friends, neighbours and coworkers about how we’re all really doing. We’re in this together. • In these days of social distancing (more accurately called physical distancing), we are learning that we don’t have to be close to feel close. We are together, even when we’re apart. • It is precisely the time, during and in recovery from the pandemic, to lean on each other. Even if we can’t be close physically with one another, we need to stay close emotionally. • Phone calls, video calls and other digital technologies offer excellent opportunities for connecting face-to-face, even when we can’t be in the same room. 5. Get involved • Visit www.mentalhealthweek.ca for info and tools about CMHA Mental Health Week.

Ensure mental health stays top of mind

Working from home presents challenges, so it’s important to stay connected, exercise and eat well JEREMY HAINSWORTH

Glacier Media

Maintaining mental health during stressful periods such as the one Canadian workers are currently experiencing should be a top-of-mind issue, counsellors and employee assistance experts say. That’s the case more than ever as people find themselves working from home while wondering what the future holds. “It’s a complicated, different way of working,” said Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) CEO Jonny Morris. “We’re exercising different muscles and working things out.” The CMHA says anxiety around COVID-19 affects not only people’s work but everything in their lives. “There’s a different level of fatigue,” Morris said. As such, it’s important to manage that anxiety before it overwhelms us, leading us to put demands on a health system already under strain.

“Recognize you can only do so much,” Morris said. So, as more people work from home, Morris said, they should ensure they eat well, exercise, get enough sleep and make time for hobbies. “Take a break,” Morris said. “Get some air in your yard or on your balcony.” As well, stay connected with family and friends, help others and cut back time on social media or watching news. Further, Morris said, employee benefit packages exist to help people. That includes psychological help, he said. The CMHA also suggests exploring self-management strategies like mindfulness, yoga, meditation, art or exercise to manage anxious thoughts. Anxiety coping strategies can be found at: www. anxietycanada.com. Morris said people can also explore mental health and substance use information at https:// www.heretohelp.bc.ca/ or through the Bounce

Working from home poses a number of challenges, including dealing with frequent interruptions. Back program at https:// bouncebackbc.ca/. Those suggestions are in line with those coming from B.C.’s government which also suggests playing a board game,

practicing deep breathing, taking a bath, reading about something other than the virus, cuddling your pet, engaging in digital detox such as leaving your phone alone for a

while and making sure to exercise. Derek LaCroix of B.C.’s Lawyers Assistance Program is one of many working from home. “This is a time for real

mental hygiene,” he said. “If I let myself go, there’s a lot of ways to go: too much TV, too much news, too much staring out the window.” LaCroix said he’s ensuring he adheres to a schedule, that he takes breaks and steps away from his work. He’s going for walks, reaching out to friends. “A lot of people seem to be doing really well by slowing down,” he said. One issue that cuts across working and social environments is that of substance abuse involving alcohol, drugs or other mood-altering issues. Many seeking recovery or already in recovery from such issues have moved into the online realm to find or sustain help for themselves and others. Organizations such as 12-step programs — examples being Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous or Al-Anon, which assists family and friends of those with such issues — have moved their meetings online.

Keep those connections by going virtual

We are used to having built-in ways to connect. We connect at school and at work, at events and social activities, even with our neighbours in the grocery store. We have visited and we have socialized. And maybe, until now, we’ve seen all of that connection as simply a part of our everyday life. We can’t any longer. For the time being, it’s not a built-in feature of our lives. We have to go looking for connection and we have to be creative. We need to make an effort to reach out to each other. Here’s your guide to connecting with others in these difficult times: Make it part of your routine Set a time, or several times, over the course of the day, and call it “social connection time.” This will be a dedicated time when you forego all distractions and check in or share with others — like on your morning walk. Make a date Book a time for a conversation. Send an email or a message, or just

call someone spontaneously, inviting them to a phone date, or a video chat. Schedule it in Just like you would a meeting (or a dentist appointment), write the time in your agenda or put an alert on your phone. “At such and such an hour, I’m going to reach out to a friend, colleague or family member.” They want to hear from you right now. Let yourself be vulnerable If you’re craving connection, let others know. Let them know you feel isolated. Deepening your conversations will deepen your relationships. Be honest If you’re not doing well, don’t cover over the feelings. Share them openly. Be generous and kind. Kindness can actually work to counter stress which is particularly important in these times. Send out a few words of gratitude on social media or send a kind message via email. This will make someone’s day and is itself a mean-

Social connections we took for granted through daily life have largely disappeared as a result of the COVID19 pandemic. ingful connection. Practice listening Really listen to each other and give the other person space to let you know how they are really feeling, too. Learning to listen actively and carefully is key to having meaningful social interaction. Join a virtual community Go ahead and join a group, virtually. There are Facebook groups on just about everything and now is a good time to find community. Go to Facebook and search the

name of the activity or kind of group that interests you using the search tool (magnifying glass) at the top of the screen. Slide into your DMs Giving and getting likes on social media is one thing but sending and receiving direct messages (DMs) can spark deeper, more meaningful connection. So, don’t just scroll through posts. Send a DM to someone who has been supportive in the past, or who seems to need support. Remember low–

tech ways to connect The phone may have been invented two centuries ago, but it is one of the most enduring and important tools for social connection that we have. If you want to reach someone long distance, you can use Skype audio, or WhatsApp, which both offer free services. Letter writing maybe a lost art too. Corresponding by mail is a great way to reach out and connect. Canada Post is still there for you. So is your email account. Make the most of high-tech All you need is a computer with a camera, or a smart phone, to use video technologies. Don’t be shy: video is face-toface time when you can’t be side-by-side. If you still feel shy: turn off the video view of yourself. This might help lighten feelings of self-consciousness. Plan a virtual event Participating in group activities can bring you closer to your friends, family and members of your community. Zoom is

a free video platform that was created to host virtual meetings, but has become a central meeting space for people looking for opportunities to socialize. Remember you are not alone Maybe most importantly, know that even if you feel alone, there are others out there ready and waiting to help. If you’re struggling find a support group. With a simple Google search you can find online support groups and peer support services to engage on issues that matter most to you. Or get some peers together and host your own support group on Zoom. There are hundreds of online portals or check out the Government of Canada’s new Wellness Together portal or with your local CMHA to see what they have to offer online and over the phone. In crisis? DUCHEK, Edward Paul March 3, 1937 - April 30, 2020 Edward Paul Duchek was born in Winnipeg on March 3, 1937 and died peacefully in his sleep on April 30, 2020 at his home in Ladner. Ed acquired his strong work ethic on the family farm in Grande Pointe, MB before moving to BC in 1966 where he expanded his heavy-duty construction business and solved mechanical challenges-always without a manual. He enjoyed Dixieland jazz music, dancing and piloting his fifth wheel. Ed was predeceased by his wife Moira (nee Meikle), and his big hugs will be sorely missed by his partner Sharon Marsh, children David (Tracy) Duchek and Janice (David) Vanderwood, sister Jeanne Beauchemin, brother Frank (Adelina) Duchek as well as 5 grandchildren and 8 nieces and nephews. We will be having a Celebration of Life when the circumstances allow, as Ed always loved a good party with family and friends. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

BARNARD-SCAIFE, Fiona Jane March 13, 1961 - May 2, 2020 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Fiona Jane Barnard-Scaife. Devoted wife and mother Fe succumbed to a brain aneurysm on Saturday, May 2, 2020. Born on March 13, 1961 in Takoradi, Ghana to parent’s Basil (Barney) and Elizabeth (Betty) Barnard, the family settled in Victoria, BC with Fe eventually finding her way to Tsawwassen. Her zest for life began with a tour on the SS Marguerite, a first career in fashion design and time well spent in the Beach Grove Clubhouse. We will dearly miss Fe’s love of life, creative flair, and endless generosity. She was an avid reader, lover of music and dance, kind to creatures big and small; saving a special spot for Stanley; and builder of landscapes that turned all eyes. She will be missed by her son Taylor (partner Makoto), beloved father-in-law Derek, mother-in-law Pam and numerous nieces and nephews. She had great love for her crew, the wonderful clients of Fiona’s Garden and Design Service and friends from the Deas Island Yacht club. Her greatest joy was time spent with Rob Scaife, the love of her life and wind in her sails for over 25 years. We will forever miss her light and the bangles that would jangle as she came into the room. She will be with all who knew her forever and ever. Fiona was an organ donor, giving life to others in need. Please consider doing the same. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Delta Food Bank. We will be planning a Celebration of Life when we can all get back together again. Condolences may be offered at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

DAVIDSON, Gordon B. March 22, 1953 − January 15, 2020 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Mr. Gordon Blair ’Gord’ Davidson, husband, father, papa, brother, and best friend, from sudden Acute Pancreatitis with his family and best friend, Kevin, by his side on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at the age of 66 years. Gord was born in Trail, British Columbia, on March 22, 1953. He moved to Delta, British Columbia with his family in 1964; where he attended Delta Secondary School and met his soulmate, Mia. At the age of fifteen, they started dating and right after graduation, and in 1971, they were married. Gord and Mia chose to stay in Ladner to raise their family. In 2018, Gord retired and moved out to Alberta, to be with his children and grandchildren. He spent his days chasing the grandkids all over Central Alberta for their sporting events. Gord loved watching his grandsons’ hockey, lacrosse, and basketball games, sometimes getting to three games in one day, many hours apart from each other. He always made sure to see his granddaughter’s figure skating competitions and was always so impressed with how much she was improving. Although Gord was not a fan of the Alberta weather, he was his grandkids biggest fan, cheering and supporting them every single day. Gord will be very lovingly remembered by his daughter, Alahna (Chad) Hunter; grandsons, Cole and Josh; step−grandsons, Mackenzie and Matthew; his son, Scott (Nadine) Davidson; grandchildren, Kenzie and Devin; and step− granddaughter, Alida. He will also be deeply missed by his brother, Stan Davidson; and his nephew, Garrett; as well as many other friends and family. Gord was predeceased by the love of his life, Mia, in 2010, and his parents, Lorne in 2007 and Netta in 2013. The previously scheduled service on May 16 has been postponed, there will be an announcement once the new date can be set.

KETTLES, John "Jack" C. September 7, 1937 − April 23, 2020 John Charles (Jack) Kettles passed away on April 23, 2020. Jack was born in New Westminster, and raised in Ladner and on the family farm on Kettles Road. Jack was the middle and only boy of five Kettles children. Jack was a farmer, fisherman, trucker, and mariner, but a farmer at heart, always willing to talk about the weather or crops. Jack married Sharen in 1963, and they raised four amazing children. Jack enjoyed a variety of sports, especially lacrosse, as well as hunting, fishing, his daily walks, and growing and tending his garden. Jack will always be remembered for his colourful phrases. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Ellenore Kettles, and his sisters, Diane Coleman, Dorothy Manley, and Margaret McRae. He is survived by his sister, Marion Falcos; his four remarkable children, Tracey (Lorne), Michele (Robert), Darren (Dale), and Mike (Tracy); grandchildren, Courtney (Joe), Jane, Emily (Chris), Taylor (Ben), Danika (Greg), and Hailey; great− grandchildren, Ava, Zoe, William (Billy), and Thomas; and his last born great−grandson, John Charles, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He also leaves his lifelong friends, Gordon and Mel, his dear friend, Lucy, and good neighbour, Smokey. Despite the fact that Jack would have appreciated a gathering of family and friends, this will not be happening. The family would like you to enjoy the memories you have of him. Condolences may be left and information found at www.evergreencremationcentre.com. Dad, we will miss you.

BINNING, Greg August 6, 1950 − April 2, 2020 It is with great sadness, we share the news of our loving Dad’s death. He passed away in Peace Arch hospital due to complications secondary to a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 69 years old. Dad is survived by his children, Nicole and Robert, and his partner, Dianne, as well as his siblings, Jacky, Leonard, and Kent. Dad was a funny, thoughtful, and charitable man who enjoyed bowling, business, and appreciated a deluxe meal. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Here’s a quote from Dad’s favourite movie, The Big Lebowski "That rug really tied the room together." In lieu of flowers, please donate to Alzheimer’s research.

McMILLAN, Deborah Leigh Beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, Deb McMillan was welcomed into the arms of her Heavenly Father on May 4, 2020 at the age of 61, following her battle with cancer. Also there to welcome her was her loving dad, Ron. Her mum Faith, sister Darlene (Brian) Delamont, brother Brian (Diane) McMillan, nieces and nephews Caleb (Lyndsey) Delamont, Daniel (Audrey) Delamont, Michael (Kendall) Delamont, Jared McMillan, Carli (Nick) Peloso, and great niece and nephew, Rosie and Jude, will miss her constant love, care and prayers for them. Due to the current circumstances there will be a Celebration of Life service at Tsawwassen Alliance Church at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider joining Deb in her passion for helping others and missions by donating to: Guatemala Conexions via multinationmissions.org or Global Advance Fund of The Christian and Missionary Alliance via cmacan.org/give

STEPHEN, Iris (nee Dolden) September 3, 1929 - May 2, 2020 Iris Stephen (nee Dolden) passed away after a short illness. She is predeceased by Gordon, her high school sweetheart and husband of almost 65 years. She is survived by her daughters Sandy (Rob) and Maureen (Mike) and many nieces and nephews. Iris was born in her family home in Richmond and was a life-long resident of the Lower Mainland, living in Tsawwassen for over 45 years. An avid walker, she spent many hours on the Boundary Bay Dyke both by herself and with her beloved dogs, enjoying the ducks, the ocean and the mountains. While her eyesight failed her in later years, she was always an eager student of current events and spent much of her time listening to news on the radio and the television. She enjoyed traveling and spent many happy holidays on cruise ships seeing numerous parts of the World. Iris worked in the Delta School system for many years prior to her retirement in 1988. She was very proud of her Scottish heritage and after countless years as a volunteer, was honored with a lifetime membership in the BC Highland Dancing Association. Iris was a devoted gardener and filled her home and her yard with all types of plants and flowers. While neither of her daughters inherited her green thumb, they would ask you to think of her the next time you plant a flower.
