Community Update
DELTA EDITION
@CenturyGroupDev
BRIA COMMUNITIES Life changed significantly at The Waterford and The Wexford this spring, but amid the pandemic, a spirit of creativity and positivity has flourished.
With most residents self-isolating in their suites, recreation staff started going door to door with afternoon ice cream delivery and bar service. Hallway bingo and exercise classes replaced group classes. Balcony Boogie at The Waterford and bagpipes in the courtyard at The Wexford drew residents and neighbours to their sun decks. Peg Buchanan shares words of wisdom from her home at The Wexford. “Our staff made a quick pivot in mid-March,” says Matthew Jackson, General Manager at The Waterford. “We were in uncharted territory, but our teams adjusted quickly and came up with creative solutions to keep residents safe, healthy, and still connected.”
IN THE COMMUNITY For decades, Century Group has supported the Delta Hospital Foundation, and during the last 12 years their annual golf tournament. For the past 6 years, as Presenting Sponsor of the “Century Group Delta Health Classic,” Century Group contributed $25,000 annually and provided over 25 staff volunteers to make this tournament a success. This year, due to provincial restrictions on large gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic,
South Delta has been very supportive of seniors and staff. “So many people have reached out with gifts and words of encouragement. We’ve received chocolates, vitamins, ice cream, PPE, and lots of encouraging letters and emails,” notes Jane Bryce, who took over as General Manager of The Wexford on March 1. “It’s kept morale high.”
Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation have decided to take their 22-year old golf tournament and make it golfless. Century Group remains the Title Sponsor of the “Century Group Delta Health Golfless Classic” which will take place online from Thursday, September 10, 2020, to Friday, September 18, 2020. Contributions raised through this online auction, 50/50 lottery, contests, and charitable donations will raise funds for a new echo ultrasound, a much needed service and piece of equipment for Delta Hospital.
Jackson notes that everyone is looking forward to returning to normal life. Still, there have been bright spots in the past months, “We’re always thinking about the safety and support of seniors, it’s been amazing to see our community prioritize that too.” The Waterford and The Wexford offer safe and supportive housing options for seniors. Community Update
@CenturyGroupDev
A COMMUNITY COMING TO FRUITION For 20 years, the team at Century Group has been carefully crafting the homes at Southlands. This year, we’re preparing to launch the first phase of these homes that will be designed to meet the needs of a changing community.
A Sense of Place and Purpose
An Architecture of Community
We’ve designed Southlands with a powerful sense of place that is focused on making a connection to farming and food. This is given expression in both the adjacent Southlands Farm that is curated as part of the Southlands community and in its Market Square, framed by the historical Red Barn and newly created Grange where a farmers market and community garden plots are some of the many activities that will come to life.
This is a community crafted with an architecture that evokes a simple Scandinavian style. This is shown in one of our first buildings nearing completion, the Discovery Centre, where the community will be invited to come and visit this Fall to learn more about life at Southlands. The Discovery Centre is designed to set the benchmark for design, and quality of materials, fit and finish that will inspire all future architects that will participate in shaping the future of Southlands for years to come.
The Homes of Southlands
General Superintendent Ryan Bos, and Project Assistant Guri Sanghera of Century Group Construction Corp, onsite at Southlands.
Among the first homes coming available are a mix of cottages and townhomes each evoking our careful attention to architectural design. Homes are designed with porches that provide a connection to your neighbours and the streetscape. Cottages and townhomes are of various sizes designed to meet a variety of family needs and with features for the modern world, such as EV charging stations. We can’t wait to show you more when we launch sales for the first phase of homes this Fall!

Reopening a slow process Despite safety measures, many customers are reluctant to come back SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It might take a while to convince customers it’s safe to come back. That’s the situation Jeremy Jefferies, a manager at Sharkey’s Seafood Bar and Grille in Ladner, believes is facing many businesses that are gradually reopening as the province eases pandemic restrictions. Businesses such as bars and restaurants, as well as personal services, found themselves ordered closed for weeks as COVID-19 became the new reality, although some tried to keep things going online. Now that those businesses were given the go-ahead to reopen in some fashion last week, it remains to be seen how quickly customers will return, even with safety measures being implemented, including reduced capacity at restaurants and servers wearing masks. “I’d describe it as tentative caution. We’ve seen a lot of smiles come through the door but volume is at an all-time low, but staffing and labour costs are at an all-time high. It’s not a sustainable system as of right now,” said Jefferies. Noting his business opened this Monday with just a few people coming, but all happy to be going out, Jefferies said hopefully people will feel more comfortable sooner rather than later after seeing the extensive additional sanitary practices that ensure safety. ably, while more than half (55 per cent) expect a restart will take at least two months. Attracting customers or revenue was the biggest concern (75 per cent). While Pat Quinn’s at Tsawwwassen Springs also had to close its dining area, the restaurant managed to keep its kitchen open with a take-out menu, bringing food orders to the coffee shop across the street for customers to pick up. Tsawwassen Springs general manager Susan Carlile said the restaurant is making preparations to open soon at 50 per cent capacity. Open Space Yoga owner Gerry Sylvester said he’s not comfortable opening his Ladner Village studio at the moment. He said clients are enjoying taking classes virtually and are in no rush to return to the Delta Street studio. Open Space Yoga has been offering 19 online classes weekly during the pandemic, sessions that average 23 participants and can get close to 40 on

Property tax bills are now in the mail

It took longer than usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the City of Delta finally mailed out property tax notices on Monday. Already having voted to lower this year’s tax increase from 3.5 per cent to 1.75 per cent, Delta council has also agreed to change the penalty date for unpaid property taxes. In prior years, the city applied a five per cent penalty to outstanding property taxes after July 2 and an additional five per cent penalty after Sept. 2. With the province’s recent announcement to provide relief to certain property classes, Delta’s finance department recommended the city establish a bylaw in which all property classes have the same penalty date of Oct. 1. To maintain consistency among all property classes, staff recommended the due date for property taxes should be July 2, and a 10 per cent penalty be applied to outstanding taxes on Oct. 1. As far as the flat rate utility bill, full payment was due March 31, however a five per cent penalty won’t be imposed on any outstanding balance until after June 1. An additional five per cent penalty will be applied on any outstanding balance after Sept. 2, and a further five per cent penalty will be applied after Nov. 2.

The Delta Firefighters’ Charitable Society recognizes the significant and unprecedented economical impact on local businesses, employees and Delta citizens through out the Covid19 pandemic. For these reasons, we have made the very difficult decision to postpone our 8th annual Harvest Festival event, held at Greystone Stables in Ladner, until September 2021. The Delta Firefighters’ Charitable Society has been incredibly proud to host Harvest Festival for the past seven years which has raised over $600,000. These funds have gone directly back into Delta communities to support local charities and programs which assist those in need.

Grad ceremonies going virtual District looked at options, but health guidelines prevent any in-person events IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
The grads of 2020 are going virtual. The COVID-19 pandemic will not allow for traditional grad walks and ceremonies, so the Delta School District has contracted GradsBC photography and video to capture the occasion for six of the seven secondary schools in the district. North Delta Secondary is also going virtual, but according to the school district, will be handling its production in-house. Assistant superintendent Brad Bauman said district staff, administrators, parents and students have been working hard the past few weeks to come up with a solution that works for all, follows all the provincial health and safety guidelines, and also provides grads with an event that is memorable and befitting of the milestone. “Everything we had planned really got thrown out the window with the pandemic,” said Bauman.
He said many ideas, both internally and externally, were brought to the table. Some suggested car parades, while others proposed walks along the school athletic tracks. And while all the ideas were appreciated and well intentioned, Bauman said they needed to come up with a district-wide solution to ensure consistency. “We looked at all the questions, comments and feedback and filtered that through all the health and safety guidelines,” he said. “There was just no way to do the grad walks and traditional ceremonies with the social distancing.” Bauman said GradsBC is a good fit that allows students to get a photo taken in formal and be videoed walking across the stage in cap and gown. “As much as it wouldn’t be in front of a live audience, it was a way where we saw a celebration could be captured virtually. It felt very turn-key for us. We felt this was a premium product, honours our grads and gave everyone a bit of support in a time of

GradsBC will create a virtual ceremony for both Delta and South Delta secondary schools. uncertainty,” he said. Each school will have designated days, still to be determined, where the grads, in groups of 15, will go to their school and have
photos and videos taken in their formal as well as in cap and gown. Valedictory speeches will be captured, as well as scholarships and bur-
saries, and other speeches by administrators. Once all that is collected, GradsBC will edit the finished product and provide a link to each school so students can share the event with families and friends. DSS principal John Pavao and SDSS principal Terry Ainge said both schools will also be adding a few surprises to make the experience unique. “It will look in many respects like a normal grad through this virtual experience. It’s going to be a nice package that all the grads will get,” said Ainge. “What we cannot replicate, due to the circumstances, is that magic of being in the theatre with 300 members of your grad class and many family and friends.” Pavao said at the end of the day, ensuring the safety of all participants was paramount. “The grad walks are a huge community event that draws hundreds of people,” he said. “I know nothing will replicate that experience, but with the circumstances, this was the best option.”

It just won’t be the same. That’s the sentiment from principals and parents as they plan for a virtual grad ceremony this year as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancelation of traditional grad walks at both Delta and South Delta secondary schools. DSS principal John
Pavao said the reaction from students and parents has been mixed. “My inbox has been full, but for every email of disappointment, I also receive an email thanking us for the options and for any way that we can recognize their child.” Pavao said the dry grad committee is looking at supporting grads in other ways such as a commemorative booklet. “They are also looking
at doing the traditional dry grad T-shirt that is given to all the grads, but with a COVID-19 spin on it, just so that they have something tangible to take away,” he said. SDSS principal Terry Ainge added the situation has been difficult on the graduating class as there is a huge anticipation for the Grade 12 year. “This is something they have been looking forward to, their parents have been
looking forward to, but there is this understanding and acknowledgment that this is part of a bigger picture,” said Ainge. He said the dry grad committee is surveying students and looking at putting on an event in the future. SDSS dry grad committee chair Sue Gordon, who has a daughter graduating this year, said it has been challenging. “As chair of a committee
that is trying to coordinate something special for the kids, it is extremely disappointing,” said Gordon. Gordon said through the student survey that she launched, she is looking at postponing the SDSS dry grad. “It will look more like a reunion I think than a dry grad, so that’s what our intentions are,” she said. “It might be in May before the 2021 grads graduate or July or August.”

He said the pandemic has Open Space looking at new ways of doing business, including early morning virtual classes as well as, once it reopens, streaming classes so participants can be in-studio or at home. Muscle Memory owner Rob Gillespie said he reopened in a limited capacity last week, capping the number of clients at any one time in the Tsawwassen fitness studio at four. “We’re taking this slow and being extra cautious,” Gillespie said. Muscle Memory closed March 16, a month before the order from Fraser Health, and has been offering virtual classes since then, a practice he said would continue for at least another month. locations with people happy to be able to go out and get a haircut, Adina Shore, owner of Billie’s Barbershop, noted almost everyone who’s gone through their doors is pleased with the measures they’ve implemented. They include all stylists and customers having to wear masks, a limited number of people in the shop at any one time and no facial hair cut. Shore noted chairs were already six feet apart. “I’d say 99 per cent of the people are happy and were comfortable coming back inside. While we are doing it and wearing masks, it’s interesting if
you look up the personal services requirements, it says you should wear a mask if you can’t keep a safe distance but it doesn’t state you have to wear a mask,” she added. At last week’s virtual town hall meeting, Mayor George Harvie encouraged residents to support local businesses. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, who was a guest at the session, had a similar message, asking people to shop and eat local. If people don’t feel comfortable eating inside, they can also make use of what will be expanded patio options, she said. Meanwhile, retail stores that decided to close their doors, including almost every store at Tsawwassen Mills, are gradually reopening as well. The mall and its stores now offer a different shopping experience with safety precautions for the foreseeable future, including hand sanitizing stations, limiting the seating in the food court and other measures, while the stores are limiting capacity and reminding customers to keep a safe distance. The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed yet another summertime event in South Delta. Late last week, Ladner Business Association president Jill McKnight began sending out letters to participants and sponsors announcing the Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show scheduled for mid-August has been cancelled. “For 16 years the Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show has grown and evolved to
make Ladner Village the perfect place to spend a Sunday,” said McKnight. “The combination of quilts and cars has drawn attendance of over 10,000 guests from around the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island to enjoy the festival atmosphere and celebrate the artistry of the cars and quilts. The LBA recognizes the importance and value of this event to our attendees, sponsors, vendors, local businesses and the community of Delta. “It is with heavy hearts
that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the LBA has made the difficult decision to cancel the 16th annual Quilt Walk and Car Show scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 16, 2020.” McKnight said that while show organizers hope B.C. will move through the restart plan and phases quickly, the message from Dr. Bonnie Henry is clear that the return to large gatherings likely will not happen until there is a vaccine available or herd immunity to COVID-19.

Delta parents are finding out more details about the school district’s voluntary plan to have students back in the classroom on a limited basis. The provincial government had announced the resumption of in-class schooling by June 1 but details on how that would look still had to be finalized. Parents last week began receiving emails from their school principals on how the plan will roll out on a part-time basis in what’s a five-stage approach. Currently, schools are in Stage 4, which means the majority of students are learning through online instruction. On Monday, June 1, as part of B.C.’s Restart Plan, school districts will move to Stage 3. According to a letter from Pinewood Elementary, each stage has school density targets to ensure the number of students in schools is manageable and maintains a healthy and safe

Other measures include managing the flow in hallways and bathrooms, staggered start and end times possibly being introduced, recess and lunch times may be changed and preventing students from gathering in hallways or common areas. Parents will know the schedule for their children by tomorrow.

Friends, family, dignitaries and invited guests got a chance to pay homage to Doug Husband last Friday as the City of Delta hosted a small, sociallydistanced gathering at a soft opening of Delta’s new cultural centre. Named the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre after the former mayor, a lifelong Delta resident, the city hopes to have a much larger public opening once COVID-19 pandemic protocols allow. “When you look at the history of former mayor Doug Husband, it is pretty outstanding what he has done for this community over these many years,” Mayor George Harvie told the Optimist earlier this month when council approved the name of the centre. “Doug has played a huge role in the heritage and the museum development, so I thought it was very fitting that we honour

e want to thank the residents of South Delta as well as the readers of the Delta Optimist for your positive feedback regarding our curbside junk removal service. We have been asked several times if we’re going to extend the promotion to June and are excited to announce that we will. For those of you who missed our pick up schedule throughout May, we are extending our promotion based on your feedback.
For our Delta clients, the $79 pick up fee has been waived until June 30th. Our removal rate is simply $0.29 per pound with no minimum charge. In order to do so, here are some of the common questions we are asked:

Do you drop items off at the landfill in Ladner?
We partner with local transfer stations and recycling centers to ensure your material is properly sorted for recycling.
How do you weigh material?
Each of our trucks have Measurement Canada certified scales built right into them, allowing us to weigh material on site.

t was quiet, even quieter than normal, as I walked through Memorial Park last Friday morning on my way to the office. There was a guy sitting on a bench talking on his phone and a couple playing pickleball, but they were the only ones sharing the park with me and my fourlegged lady. Now, you ask, what’s so strange about a city park being relatively quiet before 8:30 a.m. on a weekday? Nothing, I guess, but this was no ordinary weekday, this was the Friday following the Victoria Day long weekend, which is also known throughout Ladner as the opening of May Days, a day so revered among the younger set it’s only topped by Christmas, birthdays and the beginning of summer vacation. On the Friday morning of May Days weekend, West Coast Amusements folks would be putting the finishing touches on the midway they bring to town every year, a sight so intoxicating for those of a certain age that the 3 o’clock bell just can’t come soon enough. The rest of the park would also be taking shape, from the stage being erected along 47th Avenue to the Ladner Legion beer garden being set up beyond the left field line. None of that, obviously, played out last weekend as May Days was the first, but certainly won’t be the last, of the big late spring/summer festivals in Delta to fall victim to the COVID-19 pandemic. A tradition that dates back 124 years, the annual fair was no match for the virus and the health measures required to combat it. The good news is that May Days has skipped a year before. I remember back to 1996 when organizers held a banquet to mark the 100th anniversary, at which time my good friend, the late Edgar Dunning, who was then a spry 86, made it clear to me that although May Days had been around for a century, it hadn’t been held 100 times. I was told that year’s festivities could be termed the 100th anniversary, but not the 100th May Days. I can’t remember why it hadn’t been held — I’m thinking it was because of the world wars — but suffice to say there have been extenuating circumstances so significant the fair has been cancelled in the past. It’s a shame 2020 has been added to that rather short list, but hopefully next year we can have one heck of a party to celebrate the 125th anniversary.
Pandemic offers opportunity to take classroom outdoors
F
rederick Frobel, a German educator, founded the concept of kindergarten in the 1830s. Following philosophical points of view from French philosopher JeanJacques Rousseau and others, Frobel stressed the emotional and spiritual nature of the child, encouraging self-understanding through play activities and greater freedom, rather than following scripted presentations of adult ideas. He believed that children aged four to six, often in outdoor settings, should be engaged in more play rather than taught to understand lessons that would squelch their natural curiosity. As I am sure all of us recognize, children of this age are naturally curious and their ability to grasp concepts of nature are particularly noteworthy. Frobel was an early advocate for outside learning and “Garden of Children” is an important concept in modern education and will likely become even more relevant as a result of the pandemic. I don’t want to call this the “new normal.” I would like to say it is the way it should be. Renowned master educator Andy Hargreaves wrote a list of lockdown points, obvious and otherwise, that give insight into how to proceed with current challenges. In the April 7, 2020
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
Washington Post, Hargreaves offered one particularly notable observation that will likely have greater importance in newly adapted educational models: “More play, less work, might actually be a good direction to take in these unique circumstances.” It’s definitely worth a read. Sam Cartwright-Hatton, professor of clinical child psychology at the University of Sussex, noted in this Post article, “All the research indicates that children’s emotional health is suffering in the lockdown and it seems likely that this suffering will, in many cases, continue into the long term. We are urging ministers and policymakers to ensure that children are afforded substantial, and if possible enhanced, access to high-quality play opportunities as soon as possible.” Educators, school districts, governments and, of course, families
are struggling to figure all of this out. A test run beginning next week will ultimately provide valuable information as to what will work and what won’t for a return in the fall. Learning outside is fun for kids. I am convinced that a formula will be developed not only for young learners, but for all learners. School farms and school grounds have plenty of space and access to natural landscapes that can easily adapt to curriculum. Botany, lots of math and lots of other aspects of science and art are all readily available in the outside environment. This, of course, is not to say that classroom learning should be abandoned, and that would likely never be the case. Rather, outside learning affords an opportunity to problem solve in a complementary localized school neighbourhood environment. Current health guidelines, including social distancing, may be better met in open space surroundings which, luckily, are in abundance on most school properties in Delta. In the midst of such complexity and uncertainty, I wish parents, educators and mostly our community’s children the best of luck over the coming weeks. Keeping us connected at a time when that’s vitally important
Editor: Since the start of this pandemic, the intensity of the national and regional news media to deliver COVID-19 updates from around the planet, across Canada and our province has dominated the print headlines, TV and the internet for many weeks. The COVID-19 reporting has been exemplary and critical to our safety and well-being. But every Wednesday and Friday when I get my local Optimist headlines delivered to my e-mail box and my paper on Thursday, I stop what I am doing to catch up on what’s happening in my local community. Our local media keeps us all connected and
informed about things that are important to us who live and work in Delta. Whether it’s politics, sports, business, lifestyle or our health, we can count on our local Optimist to provide a balance of professional reporting and letters to the editor on many community issues. We really appreciate their coverage of our business community in Delta. In our new world of selfisolation, social distancing and restricted activities and travel, we all need to feel connected more than ever. Our local Optimist will help us do that if we give them the opportunity and support they need. They are also a business that employs people with
families. Like many businesses, they have experienced a reduction in revenue due to COVID-19. I encourage our businesses and citizens to support our local Optimist by purchasing ads and taking out voluntary subscriptions. They need us and we need them to help restart our economy and continue to inform us on what’s happening in the communities we all love. Garry Shearer Executive Director Delta Chamber of Commerce Editor’s note: If you’d like to take out a voluntary subscription, visit www. delta-optimist.com, email kengelland@delta-optimist.com or call 778-9878457.
Worry over Delta farmland should also include impacts of Terminal 2
Editor: Re: Council supports MLA’s bill to keep Brunswick Point land agricultural, May 21 It’s great to know Delta South MLA Ian Paton is speaking out on this issue. The Ministry of Agriculture has stated that we need to increase the amount of farmland if we are to be self-sufficient. Our farmlands have been under pressure for industrial and residential land use in recent years and we have lost, not gained, land. This will continue in Delta as we are being pressured by the Port of Vancouver to build the T2 container terminal. This additional industry will require infrastructure and
facilities. The only available land for this is farmland. This puts the need for industrial and residential lands at odds with maintaining our farmlands. As a result, we need to assess how developments like the T2 expansion can harm our agricultural output as well as our environment. There is no question that Delta has some of the finest climatic conditions and farmland in Canada. As well, food production can be effectively distributed to a large local market. This limits the need for truck traffic and unpredictable or expensive import of food. Internationally, farmlands have been receding
as population grows. As a result, the need for more farmland becomes imperative and less possible as time goes on. The COVID-19 outbreak has emphasized the need for our country and politicians to consider this issue. As countries are becoming more protective of their exports, production can be restricted or quality becomes questionable. It is now necessary for us to review our need for self-sufficiency in food production. To protect our country for the future, we need to protect our farmlands. This means we need to re-asses all proposals that take away this land. Peter van der Velden

Shoppers can’t figure out which way to walk Editor: After it took weeks and weeks for people to understand that social distancing meant staying apart for six feet, it seems that most of the populace can-
not understand the one way stickers and arrows in the aisles on the floor of stores. In the stores I have been to in recent weeks, the majority of people were
walking the wrong way, seemingly completely unaware. Maybe it will take another month or so for folks to get it. Hans Verbeek

East Ladner composter given extension to enclose facility GFL now must have 72nd Street project complete by July 1 IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
An East Ladner composting facility has been granted another extension to complete its enclosed facility. GFL Environmental Inc. was granted a second interim relief application by the Environmental Appeal Board last month to extend the construction deadline of its enclosed facility designed to reduce odours that have been a point of contention with the community since 2004. The original deadline, as stipulated in an air quality permit issued by Metro Vancouver, was for the facility to be enclosed by March 1, which was extended by the board to May 1 and has now been further extended to July 1. The Environmental Appeal Board granted the latest extension after GFL argued it was experiencing difficulties accessing materials and technical advisors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The EAB panel has stipulated that if GFL comes to them asking for another extension, then you better show proof

GFL Environmental Inc. is constructing a 137,000-square-foot composting building that would be connected to a 30,000-square-foot biofilter. because this time around they didn’t,” said Peggy Richardson, spokesperson for the resident appellants who have been challenging GFL through the appeal board hearing. “It is my sense because of what has been happening and the urgency of the matter, the EAB gave them this extension based on goodwill, etc. They say they are having issues getting advice from their U.S. counterparts.” Residents have been fighting the permit
since last summer when the hearing began in Tsawwassen. The hearing moved to Richmond last November and continued in March, when there were six days of testimony before the resident appellants asked the hearing be halted due to health concerns of the pandemic. The hearing was supposed to last 15 days, but there has been more than 40 days of testimony with no end in sight with the uncertainty of the COVID-
19 pandemic. Richardson said all sides are looking at ways to resume the hearings, possibly in a virtual way, but nothing has been decided yet. Ironically, since the pandemic started, Richardson said the air quality has improved, but the odours are still present, especially when the wind shifts direction. “We have had to lodge some complaints, but it has been much better,” she said.

Reward doubles after raccoon is found in trap TED MURPHY
t m u r p hy @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The reward for information leading to conviction of the person(s) responsible for trapping a raccoon in Beach Grove last week has reached $2,000. The Fur-Bearers, a wildlife non-profit, announced the initial reward of $1,000 last Friday after a young raccoon was found in the area of 17A Avenue, a block from Beach Grove Park and Beach Grove Elementary. The raccoon was found with a Duke-style trap on its leg, which had completely degloved its paw and broken it in multiple places. By the time the raccoon arrived at Critter Care Wildlife Society, maggots had infested the wound and it was humanely euthanized due to the extent of its injuries. Gail Martin, founder and executive director at Critter Care, has personally pledged an additional $1,000 to the reward this week, raising it to a total of $2,000. These funds are not from Critter Care Wildlife Society. “These native species are our natural heritage,” said Martin. “What is here today can be gone tomorrow. And every life is a miracle, every life deserves a second chance.” Lesley Fox, executive director of The FurBearers, called it a “deeply troubling incident.” “We are issuing this reward because this barbaric act demands consequence and because residents need to know the impact setting traps has on their community,” said Fox. “So long as trapping

These family stories won’t be disappearing Contest encouraged Delta residents to share all kinds of stories that will now live on forever ROBB LUCY
Optimist contributor
A month ago we asked the people of Delta for their stories under the headline “Don’t let this virus steal your stories.”’ We thought everyone might have a bit of spare time in this pandemic to tell us one of your life’s tales. Well, tell us you did. But let’s go back. Humans have been telling stories since the beginning of time. They were spoken around the community fire, painted on cave walls and drawn on that new paper “papyrus.” Records of storytelling have been found in hundreds of languages, from Sanskrit, Geek, Icelandic to old Slavonic. And now our stories are instantly read and watched around the world. You’ve heard the proverb: “Tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever?”
I’ve been finding and telling stories of all kinds in all media (print, TV, online) for over 40 years. I’ve seen the value. Stories teach, intrigue, entertain, inform and tell us who we are and how we live. Writer Ellen Goodman said it well: “What the next generation will value most is not what we owned, but the evidence of who we were and the tales of how we loved. In the end it’s the family stories that are worth the storage.” So, we asked you for one story of 300 words… a story about you or someone you love, a story you don’t want to disappear, a story you’d be proud to have your descendants learn about 100, 200, 500 years from now. And your stories came in. Here are a few examples: • Staying alive as the bombs dropped in Britain • Falling in love with our newly adopted baby in Georgia, Soviet Union
• Lost in an arctic storm • Grandma — the circus wonder • Welsh poetry recitals versus an RAF bombing school • Malaysia to Winnipeg — love in the new world • Nature — dirt, plants, fresh air — nourishing body and soul. Everyone has stories to tell. Yes, even you. Write or record your own or help a loved one tell theirs. Few of us will be remembered for our riches. But all of us will be remembered for the stories we leave behind to be re-told over… and over... and… Tsawwassen resident Robb Lucy is an author, speaker and producer. Peg Boocock tells the story of her parachute wedding dress
Ninety-four-year-old Peg Boocock of Tsawwassen is the winner of our family legacy story contest. Peg’s entry is a simple, memorable story that her descendants, her great, great, great grandchildren will enjoy, says author
Robb Lucy, who organized the contest. As the grand prize winner, Peg will receive a visit from White Spot’s On the Go! truck to serve dinner to 30 of her closest friends once health guidelines permit. Here is Peg’s story:
The Parachute Wedding
It was 1945 in Liverpool. I had met my future husband at a “welcome home from the war” party by the local government department that I worked for. The party was arranged for service men and women returning to their jobs which had been kept open during the war. I was 19 and Stan was 28. We got engaged two years later and planned a June wedding. As we were all still being rationed, both our families wanted to help with food coupons and I was allowed extra clothing coupons as a future bride. I really wanted a white wedding. These had been few and far between during the war years and most couples had settled for a registry office ceremony. We booked the church

and reception venue and slowly over the next few months sent out invitations. I chose my four bridesmaids and we excitedly shopped for their dresses. I had not thought too much about my dress but when
I did decide to look for it — horror upon horror — there were no coupons left! Before I could panic too much, I heard the local market was selling material which did not require coupons. A very clever dressmaker offered to make my dress and so was born the most unusual and unique wedding dress of all… made from a parachute! Yes, a beautiful white silk parachute from the war. The only time I had seen a parachute was when it was one of many hanging in the sky. I suspect I am the only bride in the world to have worn such a beautiful “parachute” on her wedding day. I even had my shoes covered in the same silk material to match the dress.

Odyssey of the Mind poses even greater challenges TED MURPHY
t m u r p hy @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Sacred Heart Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind team is familiar with out-of-the-box thinking, so a COVID-19 roadblock wasn’t going to stand in its way of competing at the world championship level. The team of students in grades 5 to 8 has been competing together for almost four years and finished second in a qualifier back in March. The provincial tournament was scheduled for March and then hopefully a trip to the world championships at Iowa State University in May. However, the COVID-19
pandemic scuttled the inperson provincial competition, leaving team coach Lisa Nykoluk wondering whether the season, which students had begun preparing for back in October, was over. For over 40 years, Odyssey International has been hosting a world tournament that sees over 15,000 people participate and this year recreated the tournament to be virtual. “I didn’t think the students would want to compete since they would have to overcome so many obstacles, make a new balsa structure (it was crushed at qualifiers) and not get to travel,” says Nykoluk of the replacement tournament. “I was

very wrong when I asked them if they wanted to compete. They all enthusiastically wanted to do it anyway even with so many
question marks on how it would be done.” So, earlier this month in Nykoluk’s Ladner cul de sac, the team of six
adapted and recreated their eight-minute performance, all the while adhering to social distancing guidelines. A video
was taken of the exercise and sent to Odyssey International. The balsa structure was also mailed to Odyssey International where the judges will do the testing to see how much weight it will bear. The video submission is just part one of the competition and normally worth 60 per cent of the mark. The second part will be a spontaneous challenge that Odyssey International will do with each of the participating teams. The Sacred Heart team is made up of students Owen Mayhew, Luan Lam, Dascha Nykoluk, Jade Defondaumiere, Kayla Spear and Zoe WilsonBonucci.
Don’t blame Delta’s bats, help count them
The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a negative spotlight on bats, due to concerns over B.C. bats carrying the virus. This association is a myth, according to Community Bat Programs of BC. The group says bats in B.C. do not have or spread the virus responsible for COVID-19 and that misinformation can lead to unfounded fear and persecution of bats. In reality, bats are an essential part of the ecology, consuming thousands of insects each night. One colony of 100 bats can eat 19 kilograms (42 pounds)
of insects during the summer. Bats in B.C. suffer from many threats, and almost half of the 15 species are at-risk. One of the more familiar species, the Little Brown Myotis, is now endangered in Canada. A simple way to support bats is to participate in the BC Annual Bat Count from June 1 to Aug. 5. The BC Community Bat Program is aware of over 40 bat colonies in buildings and 50 bat boxes in the Greater Vancouver area, including about 10 in Delta. “The counts are a wonderful way for people to
get outside, respect social distancing guidelines, and be involved in collecting important scientific information,” says biologist Danielle Dagenais, regional coordinator for the Greater VancouverSquamish region of the BC Community Bat Program. You simply wait outside a known roost site, such as a bat-box, barn or attic, and count bats as they fly out of their roost at twilight. Ideally, four counts are done during the counting season, with a priority of two counts in June. In 2019, the BC Annual Bat Count collected base-
line data on bat populations at 337 sites across the province, and hopes to monitor these sites and more for 2020. The count data helps bat biologists understand bat distribution and normal variation in colony sizes before bats face impacts from a devastating bat disease called white-nose syndrome. White-nose syndrome is an introduced fungal disease, fatal for bats but not for other animals or humans. Not yet identified in B.C., the disease continues to spread in Washington state, less than 200 kilometres from

Hawthorne bounty to hospital
While on Spring Break, we all heard the news that schools would be closing for the foreseeable future. Hawthorne Elementary teacher Susanne Bohmert’s thoughts soon turned to the large garden at the Ladner school, which in a typical year is planted, maintained and harvested by her Grade 2 class. “I thought of all the joy it brings to our students and families throughout the year,” says Bohmert. “I believed and hoped it would continue to raise their spirits in the weeks to
follow.” Bohmert consulted with principal Zena Ray and vice-principal Britt Bryan who were keen and supportive of the garden being planted, despite in-person classes being cancelled. Bohmert enlisted her own family members (who are part of her “bubble”) to assist with some of the many garden jobs. This included moving three yards of manure and planting 50 potatoes and many other veggies for classes to harvest between now and September. During a recent class
Zoom session, the teacher asked for students’ input on an important question: Who could we thank with a gift of locally grown produce? One student suggested health care workers and another piped up with Delta Hospital, so a large basket of rhubarb and three posters (made by the families in the photo) were delivered to Delta Hospital earlier this month. Bohmert says it was received with big smiles and thank you for Hawthorne’s gardening class.

in which things can go so horribly wrong. While we are excited, nervous and fearful about what our re-opening into a new normal may look like, we need to remember that through all of this, God is with us. God is right in the middle of our fear and anxiety, our excitement and longing. God is with us, holding and guiding us through the days and weeks ahead. As our Lord says, “I am the Alpha and the Omega; the beginning and the end.” God is in our beginning and at our end and in all points in between. This is where our confidence and strength are found as we live into a new normal.

Planting more trees can provide host of environmental benefits
More sunlight and warm temperatures inspire homeowners to spend more time in the great outdoors. Outdoor projects often top homeowners’ to-do lists in spring and summer, with gardens and landscapes taking centre stage. Planting more trees around the yard is one popular project that can improve property value and benefit the environment. Why plant trees? There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. Trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gases from the air. One

that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes. Planting the tree Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight. Stake the tree to help it stay straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned
Water conservation starts at home and in garden
The world’s supply of fresh water is dwindling, a troubling notion on its own, and even more so when considering the human population is only growing. In fact, the World Water Council estimates the world’s population will grow by as much as 50 per cent in the next half-century. Such a reality only highlights the need to conserve water. Though the growing global water shortage is a complex problem, the many ways people can conserve water are quite simple. • When cooking, some cooks might find it convenient to keep faucets running so they can more easily rinse foods and their hands. However, such practices are incredibly wasteful, as substantial amounts of water literally goes down the drain. In addition, homeowners can install low-flow faucets in their sinks. • Take showers instead of baths. Baths might feel like just what the doctor
ordered after a long day, but baths are considerably more wasteful than showers. The average bath requires about twice the amount of water compared to a 10-minute shower under a low-flow showerhead. • Water conservation efforts need not be confined to indoors. Homeowners who pride themselves on having lush green lawns can still produce envious landscapes while conserving water. When watering a lawn, do so in the early morning hours. Temperatures tend to be milder, meaning less water will be lost to evaporation. • Water plays a vital role in the production of energy, so taking steps to conserve energy can go a long way toward reducing your water footprint. When buying new appliances, opt for energy-efficient products. Homeowners can also investigate renewable energy sources such as solar energy.

Betty Scott is inspired by her walker. So much so that she wrote a poem about the metal mobility accessory that goes everywhere with her. She finds inspiration all around her — in the ocean, growing old, aquafit class and grief — and the 88-year-old turns that inspiration into poems that encourage, uplift and delight the people around her. “I only write what I have experienced. I write what I know and who I am,” said Scott as she sits relaxed in a colourful dashiki dress in the moments before her poetry reading for fellow residents at The Waterford seniors living community in Tsawwassen. “I’m inspired by people, water, ships, fire, great conflagrations -- all that
big life stuff.” Her tone is sometimes cheeky, other times nostalgic, frequently profound and always candid. Her topics range from personal experiences like ice skating on the St. Lawrence River, the birth of her first granddaughter and her retirement, to the deeper inner workings of her Christian faith, her husband’s death and the passage of time. Born and raised in Ontario, she met her husband Walter in Lancaster when they were both 15 years old. They married after she completed her nursing training in Montreal, and together they raised five children. It was in those days with little children at home that she began to write poetry. Every phase of life offered new inspiration — first as a mother and then a grandmother, as a nurse
and then a retiree, as a wife and then a widow. Each new season brought new insight. Scott had the sense that she would like to publish some of what she’d written, but the process of getting published was more daunting than writing poetry. “I’d write away to publishers, and get a letter back saying, ‘Send us 40 to 50 poems’, and I would say to myself, ‘I’m too busy.” I wasn’t even sure I had that many poems. So I put it off,” she recalls. Eventually, a friend pointed her in the direction of a publisher who graciously welcomed her in and showed her the way. Over the years she’s published three volumes of her poems, with plenty more handwritten compositions yet to be printed. She’s written about everything in her life — the joyful, the mundane,
the painful — with one exception. “I have no poetry from my time with a brain tumour,” she said. “It’s all angry stuff.” The tumour made itself known in her 80s and Scott wanted it dealt with quickly. Six hours of surgery removed it, but the subsequent recovery was difficult. “I was learning to walk, learning to write, all those things,” she said. With the help of her daughter, she recovered, and it was in that season that she moved into her new home in The Waterford “I was ready for Plan B, and there is no question, it was the right move,” she said. “Living alone I could vacuum, I could shop, but it was killing me.” Life at The Waterford offered a second wind. Looking for a light, humourous read? Then look no further than Me & Sal & the Young People. The book was recently published by Tsawwassen author Cecilia Mavrow through her own publishing company Ruksak Books. A sequel to Me & Sal & the Joy of Aging, which was released two years ago, it’s a humourous look at two aging widows coping with the unexpected assaults of advanced years when Sal’s 45 year-old son moves back home. Me & Sal & the Young People opens up a whole
new experience into Deedee and Sal’s dull, little lives when three young men in their early 20s move in across the street. “The first book is about aging and a lot of the things that happen when you are old. Also about me and Sal who are next door neighbours and just the things they go through and the people on the street,” said Mavrow. “The second book is a follow-up, two years later and the people they knew across the street died, and they get these three young guys who moved in and are looking after the house.” She said in these seemingly endless stay-at-home

days, reading some lighter material is a welcome diversion. “I’m getting tired of the detective novels with piles of bodies and books that are filled with shock and awe and violence,” she said. “I thought we just need something fun to read. The first book is pretty funny. I have had people say that they just couldn’t stop laughing, so that’s really my objective… entertain rather than enlighten.” She said the first book was well-received, which is why she wrote the second. She has no plans at this point to write a third. “We’ll just have to see if I get any more ideas,” she said. “I might have run out by now. How many books are there in each of us?” Mavrow is a retired university lecturer and the published author of six books, including the McGraw-Hill text, Writing in Engineering. Readers can find both eBooks available through their ebook readers, and through eBookit.com and Amazon. Print editions are also available through eBookit.com and Amazon.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
Plan to Live the Good Life
Grab Bingo card and start making connections with Delta’s seniors Seniors Week in Delta is going to look a little different in 2020, so the city needs the community’s help. Since we are not able to celebrate seniors in our community together, the City of Delta is encouraging Delta residents of all ages to safely engage with the seniors in their neigh-
bourhood through its new, interactive Shine Bright for Seniors Bingo game. The game is comprised of simple tasks, designed to foster connections, promote compassion and show seniors their community is thinking of them. Of course, these tasks respect physical dis-
tancing. Friendly competition is encouraged between family members, friends and neighbours to see who will get a line during Seniors Week, which is June 1 to 7. The ultimate goal is to rally Delta around a common goal of celebrating our seniors.

New - Lifeline Unit That Can Be Used Out In The Community
Lifeline is a unit of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary. In Delta, we enable approximately 500 residents of Delta to live independently and secure within their own homes. Volunteers install the equipment and ensure the clients know how to use their Personal Help Buttons. Many calls to Lifeline are solved by responders, therefore preventing unnecessary ambulance calls or visits to the Hospital Emergency Department. Seniors and their families have peace of mind knowing that help is just a click away. Having Lifeline was a great comfort for both myself and my mom. She had cause to use it a couple of times after falling in her home. With Lifeline she was able to alert me and I was there within minutes. I travel often and the installation of Lifeline gave both myself and my mom great peace of mind.... Joan K. Delta, resident.

A Very Special Thanks!
A special thank you for always working so hard with smiles for all of us to enjoy in the neighbourhood. BYRN, Jesslyn Ellis (Jackie) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our dear sister Jackie, due to a short battle with cancer. Jackie was predeceased by her mother Jesslyn Mackin, her father Wilson Mackin and her sister Mary Mackin. There will be no service for Jackie, as she requested. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Mental Health Association. would be greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Jackie’s friends and neighbors for their help and kindness in her final days. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence on the family’s on-line obituary at: www.myalternatives.ca 604-596-2215
Your gift assists the Foundation to purchase vital medical equipment for Delta Hospital.
Elizabeth (Betty, later on Beth) was born in New Westminster, BC, to George and Melba German (Née Stewart). The youngest of 5 siblings.

MILLS, Gregory J.B. July 21, 1954 − May 20, 2020 It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Greg Mills, loving husband of the late Barbara Mills. Greg is also predeceased by his mother and father, Doreen and Jack Mills. Greg is survived by his brothers, Grant, Dave, John, and Jim; his four children, Brooke, Adam (Melissa), Sean, and Brent (Alison); and his precious grandchildren, Daphne, Jade, and Mable. He will also be deeply missed by his partner, Lori, his many friends, and his co−workers. A strong pillar in both his family and the community, Greg was a man of integrity and ethics, whose commitment to his family businesses became the foundation for the legacy he would create. As the General Manager of Mills Paint for several decades, his leadership was admired and his contributions were immeasurable. After retirement, Greg’s determined nature and love for the ocean led him to boat−building school on Gabriola Island, where he honed his woodworking skills and eventually completed a few well−crafted wooden boats. Endlessly proud of his latest family business venture Four Winds Brewing, Greg provided stability, guidance, and mentorship as the company’s President and Co−Founder. Often stoic and reserved, Greg led by example, imparting valuable lessons his family will proudly embrace for years to come. A celebration of life will be planned for a time better suited for a larger gathering.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Elizabeth’s greatest joys in her life was her relationships with her husband Tom, her family, the love of cooking/food, (We hope they don’t serve her meals cold in heaven because she will send it back for reheating), nature, working the land, walking the dyke, and travel. She found comfort in music, sunshine and attending St. Stephens Church,in East Delta. Elizabeth’s legacy of unconditional and non-judgemental love will live on through us and in our memories for an eternity. Along with her trust, integrity, inner beauty, and smile. Forever grateful to Mhel Senior Services, The Waterford Care Centre, and Delta Hospital staff, who supported our family through this difficult time. Any donation to the Delta Hospital would be her honour. “Simply the Best!” Condolences may be offered at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
