A suspect has been charged in relation to a New Year’s Day fire that destroyed a professional building on 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen. Daniel Robert Hacking, 30, of Delta has been charged with one count of break and enter and one count of arson damaging property. Hacking has since been released on a number of conditions, one of which is obeying house arrest, 24 hours a day,
unless receiving written permission to leave for compelling reasons, such as employment or outings under supervision. He is also not permitted to possess any incendiary devices. His next court appearance is Aug. 7. “This was a challenging investigation as the building was completely destroyed in the fire,” said Delta police S/Sgt. Dave Vaughan-Smith. “I want to commend our Delta firefighters — they definitely had some challenging work with this fire, and were of great assistance in our

investigation.” The building housed two dental clinics and a music school. The Delta Fire Department was called to the scene at approximately 4 a.m. on Jan. 1. The fire was extensive, and was not fully extinguished until the next day. There were no injuries reported. “We want to acknowledge the impact this fire had on our community, as we know many were understandably upset,” added Vaughan-Smith. “Three separate businesses were badly damaged by the fire, with a broader

impact on their customers and clients. It was important to our officers to take the time to do a thorough investigation.” Police continue to investigate several other suspicious fires in the community late last year, including one at a tattoo shop in Ladner Village and others at vacant homes near South Delta Secondary. DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf told the Optimist police do not want to speculate about a connection at this point, adding all she could say is investigations are ongoing.

Minor hockey is back in South Delta. The South Delta Minor Hockey Association hit the ice last weekend for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of all its programs. In doing so, the association is one of, if not the first, in the Lower Mainland to return to the ice. “We can’t say enough about the support we have received from the City of Delta, our players, parents and coaches,” said SDMHA communications officer Wayne Carleton. “It is good to be back on the ice and last weekend was a great success and positive start to the SDMHA Summer Skills program.” Carleton said the association has been working hard the past four weeks with the City of Delta, Hockey Canada, BC Hockey and ViaSport on its Return to Hockey Safety Plan. He said the health and safety of all players, coaches and support staff is top priority. “A lot of other minor hockey associations hope to get back soon,” said Carleton. “We have shared our plans with a number of other associations, so hopefully they can see our success and get back on the ice soon. It’s been a lot of effort to create our health and safety plan to get us back out there.” The SDMHA Summer Skills program will operate at Tilbury Ice every weekend throughout July. Market returning this Sunday
Food-only and fully fenced, this year’s version will be a different experience IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
The Ladner Village Market kicks off its 24th season this Sunday but it won’t be the usual market experience. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the market will operate as a food-only venue with vendors selling fresh produce, prepared foods and edible plants. This focus allows vendors and shoppers to maintain physical distancing within the existing market footprint along 48th Avenue. Jill McKnight, one of the market coordinators, said they’re excited to open this Sunday. “I think we have a cautious level of excitement,” she said. “We really want this to be as safe as possible for everyone. We’re excited to see our vendors, excited to have access to the produce. I’m already looking ahead to what I’ll be purchasing and I love that I will be getting it from our local farmers.” The 2020 season was scheduled to begin last month but the first two editions had to be can-
celled. Sunday will be the first of five dates this year with markets also set for July 26, Aug. 9 and 23, and Sept. 13. The number of vendors has been reduced from 160 in previous years to less than 70 this year. The market will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Here are the essentials on how the market will operate: • The market will be completely fenced with one entrance at the corner of Delta Street and 48th Avenue. There will be ample area to queue prior to entering and there will be a controlled number of people allowed in the market to allow for proper physical distancing. • The market will flow in one direction only. Shoppers will be asked to follow the “Shop-Do Not Stop” theme found in all farmers’ markets this year. • There will be multiple hand washing/sanitizing stations within the market and it is highly recommended each guest entering the gates use hand sanitizer upon entry. • No eating is allowed

within the market so you must keep all foods in their packaging until after you leave the market. • Vendors will be taking necessary precautions
within their booths to ensure hygiene, so shoppers are asked to follow their instructions and signage. • No dogs will be
allowed into the market, except for certified service dogs. • Shoppers will be encouraged to use cashless, no contact payment methods. In recent weeks there have been some concerns expressed on local Facebook groups about how the market will operate, and whether its operation will have negative impacts on businesses in Ladner Village. Some on social media have said the fencing will block access to businesses. McKnight said at no time has it ever communicated or suggested there would be fencing in front of businesses to limit access. “A letter was taken around to the businesses in early May and we do this every year — every year we communicate with the businesses,” McKnight said. “The one difference this year was that we needed to communicate that the market was going to be enclosed by fencing as a way of maintaining social distancing for everyone.”
Training to continue, but no timeline on games at this point CONTINUED from Page 1 Last weekend there were four ice sessions on Saturday and seven on Sunday. The focus of the summer program is skill development and training. A minimum of two metres (six feet) of physical distancing is to be maintained at all times on and off the ice as per BC Health protocols. The
maximum number of players per session is 10, plus coaches. No spectators are permitted in the building, only players, coaches and a dedicated safety person. He said players are asked to arrive at the facility dressed and muster in a staging area where they will sit, socially distanced, put on their remaining gear and skates and then head inside for their ses-
sion. “Beside Tilbury is the fenced sport court, so we set up the staging area,” Carleton said. “About 10 minutes before the ice time we bring them into the rink. We have 30 minutes between the ice sessions to allow for ice cleaning and proper sanitizing. It worked out really well last weekend. “Normally we don’t
run summer programs, but there has been high demand for this. We got good buy-in from parents, coaches, players. Everyone was happy to be back.” Carleton said there is no definite timeline for getting back to games and normal programming, but the association hopes to hear more in the coming months from Hockey Canada, BC Hockey and
ViaSport. “We normally have a camp at the end of August, so that is scheduled to go,” Carleton said. “There is lots of moving parts in terms of getting back to scheduled games. Like everything else we have no confirmed dates. Potentially there could be interclub games within the association, but it’s all a wait and see.”

Baby refuses to wait for first responders Firefighters, paramedics and midwives all arrive after Tsawwassen mom gives birth at home IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta firefighters, a 9-11 operator, towels, a shoelace and a safety pin all contributed to the safe and healthy birth of a baby girl in a Tsawwassen home late last month. Matt Pitcairn and his wife Vanessa Tong were binge watching Homeland in their bedroom June 24 when her water broke and contractions set in at two minutes apart. The couple knew it wouldn’t make it to Richmond Hospital in time, so Pitcairn relied on a 9-1-1 operator to assist him with getting the necessary supplies, however the baby wasn’t about to wait. Within minutes, the head was crowning and with two pushes Hanalei Hei-Yuet Tong Pitcairn was welcomed into the world. A couple minutes later, Delta firefighters arrived, followed by paramedics and two midwives. While the firefighters were initially concerned about her colour, the paramedics and midwives

With two boys, four and seven, Pitcairn said this birth was a “surreal” experience, but recovery has been the best for his wife
this time round. “It was so chaotic, but looking back on our three births, it was the most special,” he said. Tong had wanted to have her own mother and perhaps someone to take photos at the birth, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, only one person would have been able to come along. Having the baby at home, it became a family
event, including Tong’s parents who live in a suite in the same house. Even their younger son, Sawyer, four, offered help, rubbing his mother’s back when Pitcairn had to step out for a minute. “The whole family was there and helping out any way they could,” Pitcairn said. Pitcairn, who is the president of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce,
paid a visit on Canada Day to Delta Fire Hall No. 2 to meet up with the crew that responded. “It was very special. It was so great to be able to see their faces because they were wearing all their PPE gear [when they responded], and it was so fast and furious, so it was really nice to have the opportunity to thank them in person and just have a conversation, hang out for
a bit and thank the guys that helped to bring our little one into the world,” he said. “This is something we have never experienced before and hopefully never will again, but it has been very special for sure.” When news of the birth started to spread in the community, Coun. Lois Jackson sent a thank-you note to the fire department and copied the Optimist. “This story has brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye,” said Jackson. “It’s been such an honour for me to be associated so closely with our fire personnel over the past 20 years, and they have never let me down. Chief [Paul] Scholfield, could you please pass along my personal thanks to the crew, who will remember that little baby girl for many, many years to come. As I recall, another firefighter who delivered a little baby girl probably 18 or 19 years ago had his picture taken with her as a grown adult a couple of years ago.” With files from Maria Rantanen/Richmond News

e want to thank the residents of South Delta as well as the readers of the Delta Optimist for your positive feedback regarding our curbside junk removal service. We have been asked several times if we’re going to extend the promotion to July and are excited to announce that we are.
For Delta pickups, we have removed our $79 pick up fee until July 31st if your load is located outside. Our mission is to help you and your family regain space in your home. In order to do so, here are common questions Delta residents have asked:
Were you founded in Delta?
Yes, we certainly are! We are homegrown in Delta, BC.
Do you recycle?
Yes, we always do our best to recycle material whenever possible. This includes wood, metal, electronics, cardboard, and so much more!
How do you weigh material?
Each of our trucks have Measurement Canada certified scales built right into them, allowing us to weigh material on site.
Is there a minimum or maximum amount of material you can take? For outside pickups, we have waived our 200-pound minimum charge until July 31st. We do not have a maximum weight amount. For example, 200 pounds of material located outside will cost you $58.00 plus GST.
What do you take? We take furniture, electronics, appliances, construction debris, yard debris, and so much more. Call us to discuss what you would like removed.
Do you load the material? Yes, we do all the loading and lifting for you!
How do we pay? Our most common contactless payment methods are by credit card (over the phone) or by sending an e-transfer.
How do I schedule a pick up? Call 604-505-5865 7-days a week or book online at 505junk.com/DeltaCleanUp. We continue to be active members of the community and appreciate every time you share our article in the Tsawwassen Loop and Ladner Landing.
As a reminder, we are all united in our efforts to keep COVID-19 at bay. We want to share a few policies that we have put in place to keep our team and community safe:
Sanitization: The interior of our trucks are cleaned after servicing every client.
Hand washing: Cleaning stations are provided in every truck and employees are washing hands before and after every pick up. Physical distancing: All material must be located outside (front yard, back yard, or in a garage) to take advantage of the promotion. Our team and clients maintain a 6 feet minimum on site. If you require a pick up inside your house or apartment, please call us. Contactless payments: Credit card or e-transfer payments are done securely over the phone with our head office. No headway on petition for access to Pt. Roberts TED MURPHY
t m u r p hy @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Carla Qualtrough says she has “a ton of sympathy” for Canadians who can’t get to their cottages and boats in Point Roberts, but the Delta MP isn’t sure when they’ll be able to cross the line again. Qualtrough was reacting to an online petition that seeks a relaxation of travel restrictions so Canadians can cross into the American peninsula to perform routine maintenance. As of July 3, more than 2,100 had signed. Aimed at government officials on both sides of the border, the change.org petition started by Kevin McIntosh states many Canadians own cottages and boats in Point Roberts they have been unable to check on since the Canada-U.S. border was closed to non-essential travel more three months ago. Qualtrough said she has been in talks with cabinet colleagues in Ottawa as well as people locally in an effort to find a solution that might suit the geo-
graphic anomaly, but has yet to come up with one. “Unfortunately, I don’t see a world where we don’t treat the whole border the same,” she told the Optimist when asked about the unique circumstances in Point Roberts. She said the best hope for those with property in Point Roberts might be a gradual reopening of the border by region or by type of visitor that could broaden the definition of essential travel, possibly expanding it to property maintenance. Qualtrough added that Ottawa has been in constant contact with the U.S. government on the border issue, and the two countries have been on the same page thus far, but said ultimately it’s up to the U.S. to determine who is allowed to enter the country. McIntosh, who believes it’s fairly likely the border closure will be extended, stated he’s been unable to maintain or remove his boat moored at the Point Roberts Marina. He said not only has he been unable to enjoy the use of
his boat, but the downside of prolonged inattention could be needless environmental damage to the marina environment. The petition states: “I propose a special dispensation allowing Canadians access to their property, boats and animals in Point Roberts, WA to perform maintenance, removal or care functions under controlled conditions, i.e. no contact with local residents for business or pleasure purposes.” Many who have signed the petition own cottages in Point Roberts and worry that without regular maintenance they will fall into disrepair. They raise concerns over rats and raccoons causing damage to vacant buildings as well as the possibility of leaks and other issues. There are also worries about insurance not being valid if structures are unattended for months on end. Many suggest that crossing the border to check on property should be deemed essential travel so long as those who cross only go to and from their properties.

RCMP issue warrant for Delta teacher facing child porn charges
IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Surrey RCMP have confirmed there is a B.C.wide arrest warrant for a former Delta elementary teacher charged with child pornography offences. RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Elenore Sturko confirmed with the Optimist Monday there is a warrant out for 52-year-old Surrey resident Elazar Reshef. “He is not in custody yet. There is a belief that he may not be in B.C.” said Sturko. Last Friday, RCMP announced that charges were approved by the BC Prosecution Services and information sworn against Reshef on July 2 following an investigation that began in March of 2019. “Reshef has been in direct contact with children during his work as a teacher in the Delta School District. As a result, the Surrey RCMP are releasing this information in the interest of public safety and to further the police investigation,” said RCMP in last Friday’s news release. The Optimist has learned that Reshef
taught at North Delta’s Gray Elementary. The Optimist has reached out via email to the school’s principal for comment, but has yet to get a response. In an emailed response to the Optimist last Friday, the Delta School District said the safety and wellbeing of students is the district’s paramount concern. “In July 2019, upon hearing that Mr. Reshef was being investigated by the police, we took immediate action to remove him from any interactions with students within the school district,” said district communications manager Cathryn Tucker. The RCMP investigation began last year as a result of a notification received from an electronic service provider, which alleged that an account user had child pornography in their possession. RCMP say investigators have reviewed all available evidence and, at this point, no Lower Mainland children have been identified as potential victims. Anyone who may have information that could assist in the investigation is asked to call 604-599-0502.

The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
TSAWWASSEN
• June 27, 9:57 p.m., 400-block of English Bluff Road: Complainant called police to report a loud group of youths congregating at and possibly vandalizing English Bluff Elementary. On arrival, police located the group which apologized, picked up the garbage and moved along without any issues. Police conducted a walkaround of the school and did not observe any vandalism or broken glass. Complainant was updated. • June 27, 10:23 p.m., 6000-block of 17A Avenue: Complainant called police reporting hearing loud
voices coming from the beach, and firecrackers going off on the road. On arrival, police conducted foot patrol on the beach and dike, but did not locate anyone. Police spoke with the complainant who stated the issue of youths being loud and vandalizing had been going on for years. Police advised they would conduct more patrols in the area. • June 28, 1:29 p.m., Centennial Park: Metro Vancouver Parks requested police attend to assist with traffic control at the Centennial Beach parking lot. Police attended and observed area to be busy with the parking lot overflowing. Delta bylaws were unable to assist due to traffic concerns elsewhere. Police attended to assisted Metro Vancouver employees in control over traffic flow. • June 29, 8:19 p.m., 1100-block of Bayview Drive: Complainant reported that his lawnmower, valued at approximately $500, had been stolen from outside his house. Complainant advised the lawnmower was at the end of his driveway, just out of view while he was weeding and listening to music on headphones. When he returned to start mowing
his lawn, the mower was gone. Police suggested that given the location where the mower was left that someone may have thought the mower was being thrown out. Area patrols were negative. • July 4, 9:32 p.m., 500-block of Centennial Parkway: Complainant reported that two males were smoking marijuana inside a car parked at Centennial Beach. Police attended and spoke with the driver who advised that his passenger was smoking a nicotine vape pen. Passenger allowed police to inspect the vape pen which was only meant for nicotine. Neither the driver nor passenger smelled of marijuana or displayed any signs of impairment.

Resident finds hundreds of used syringes in bush IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
A Tsawwassen resident made an alarming discovery last week — an estimated 300 to 500 used syringes stashed in their front bush in an old cardboard box. Liam McGee told the Optimist the needles seemed to be completely random sizes and uses, indicating this was likely a drug user using whatever needles they could get their hands on. “We had a landscaper in our yard on Tuesday evening [June 30] cleaning up a bit and he reached into the bush with his rake and saw a box. He reached in and saw a bunch of needles in there,” McGee said. “We contacted the City of Delta and they came and collected the box. This is very alarming as this is a bush my dog has been in to investigate and the neighbourhood I live in is filled with kids.” McGee said he let his neighbours know about the finding so they could also keep an eye out.

Liam McGee found a cardboard box containing an estimated 300 to 500 used syringes in a bush at the front of his Tsawwassen property. “This could be something that might show up in another yard – who knows,” said McGee. Delta city manager Sean McGill said staff received the call and very quickly were dispatched to pick up the box. “We also notified our
occupational health nurse to ensure the incident and syringes were dealt with appropriately and safely, including disposal,” McGill said. “Staff will also review the incident to confirm that all appropriate precautions were taken.”

’m loathe to draw any conclusions about the altercation between two women at Centennial Beach last month until all investigations are complete, but the one obvious takeaway from the incident that’s generated considerable media attention is that cooler heads should have prevailed. I know I’m running the risk of offending some by devoting more ink to a story that some believe has already been overblown, but there’s no getting around the fact it involved the wife of Delta’s police chief and, like it or not, someone in her position is held to a certain standard. Regardless of what might or might not have happened on that late Saturday afternoon in early June, it’s clear to me the Delta Police Department should have handed the file over to another policing jurisdiction immediately because even if the DPD did the investigation by the book, and it contends that was the case, it’s impossible to avoid the optics on this one given the complaint involved the chief’s wife. A separate police agency wouldn’t have had that kind of baggage, which could be well what the Vancouver Police Department concludes after being assigned to investigate by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner. As far as that initial investigation goes, the deputy chief said the department went above and beyond its usual practices, yet the complainant says she wasn’t even interviewed, which would suggest the probe might not have been as comprehensive as advertised. Having said that, the DPD has been most transparent when a member of the force has been the subject of an investigation, including last summer when a high ranking officer was found to have had inappropriate sexual communications with a potential recruit. This is not a department that circles the wagons or brushes things under the rug, so it will be interesting to see what the Surrey RCMP investigation determines took place on both sides of the Dubords’ fence in Boundary Bay. What we do know is what should have been a cordial exchange between a property owner and a lost beach goer devolved into something that has cast a shadow on an entire department. I trust that outside agencies will soon get to the bottom of this and take whatever action is necessary.
Enjoy summer’s bounty during this glorious time of the year

f you’re a fruit fan like me, this is the best time of year to be a British Columbian. I am a particular maniac when it comes to B.C.grown cherries. I must admit I felt a little sticker shock a week or so ago when I saw the cashier ringing in my bag of cherries. She paused, looked me dead in the eye and asked if I really wanted to pay $13-plus for the bag of purple delight. I barely flinched and thanked her for asking but said that yes, I have to have them. The thing with cherries is that if it rains on the orchard close to maturity, the cherries will spilt and become unmarketable to most consumers. The flavour is still there, of course, but the appeal of a split cherry on the store shelf is woefully low. Some growers will pay $1,000 an hour for helicopters to hover over the orchards after a rain to dry the trees and the fruit preventing a crop failure. This solution can take care of an acre in about five minutes The other problem with the cherry harvest is the usual pickers are not as available as they were pre-COVID-19. Typically, hundreds of domestic “backpackers” from Quebec would make the trek to the Okanagan this time of year but the pandemic has kept

most of them at home. Likewise, migrant workers from Mexico and the Caribbean that usually work the orchards are hamstrung by border access issues despite field workers being classified as an essential service. Locally we look to be in good shape. A fantastically warm April saw a great start to our field crops and a moist start to summer is promoting growth. When the heat comes, and it will, we will be in good shape to enjoy the bounty grown for us by our local farmers. Remember to buy B.C. to support our farming community. On a micro-local basis, the Farm Roots field in Boundary Bay is in early summer glory. The small farm is producing some fantastic food. Several hundred Russian Red garlic bulbs are cur-
ing in the school and hundreds of pounds of new potatoes have been harvested and make it to the farm stand daily along with super sweet snap peas, turnips, scallions and other early season goodies. The 250-metre walk from field to farm stand make these offerings the freshest around. The young farmers that I work with are now officially on summer vacation but I see them around all the time. Just this past Tuesday I was greeted by three sets of two students on scooters and bikes while watering their school farm at English Bluff. It was a warm and sunny day and they pleaded with me to spray them with the hose. Farmer Mike happily obliged with enthusiasm. The switch from shower mode to “jet” was appreciated by the kids. The school district has prepared signage that I will be installing at the school farms to remind us all to maintain social distancing when visiting school farms and community gardens during the pandemic. Keep your distance and enjoy our local bounty. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Columnist views police actions through lens of white privilege Editor: Re: Under the microscope, police need our support, not anger, Community Comment, June 25 I feel compelled to write a counterpoint to Ingrid Abbott’s column. Abbott’s comments and point of view are part of the problem. She is viewing the entire issue through the lens of white privilege. I suspect that a person of colour might have a different view of police in general.
Does she realize that since April of this year, in this great country, as many as eight indigenous people have been killed directly or indirectly by police? I think it is our neighbours of colour that need the support, not the police. A couple of points in her article really worked me up: 1. “The alleged death of George Floyd in the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin...” George Floyd is dead and we all saw what happened. Nothing alleged about it.
2. “Under no circumstance would I ever see a parallel between our police force and the horrendous police brutality we have witnessed in the United States and in some of our rural Canadian communities.” I think what she meant to say is there is a police problem in our indigenous communities and places where there are more people of colour. In communities that are predominantly white, there is no problem with police racism. Allen Moy
Bay resident disgusted by what he found
Editor: Over the years we, and many of our neighbours in Boundary Bay, have had to put up with visitors to the neighbourhood and the beach using our gardens and driveways as their private washrooms. Generally we’ll notice it after the fact when we discover a stream of urine running down our driveway.
But on Monday (the day after a busy Sunday at Centennial Beach) I was totally stunned and disgusted, nearly to the point of nausea, when my dog discovered a pile of human excrement on the soil beside our drive. I know for certain its origin is human because the wet-wipes that were also left there are not something typically used
by dogs. We live only 150 metres from the public washroom at Centennial Beach. Whoever it was that did it and anyone else that thinks that such gross behaviour is acceptable, please stay well away from us, from our families and from our neighbourhood; you are no better than pigs and are not welcome. Feathered visitor puts on a better show
Editor: Just a little story to let you know about an old friend of mine who visited recently. He obviously was unaware of COVID-19 and social distancing. I believe his name is Finch. He stayed for over an hour, however he became upset and my wife and I had difficulty understanding him. He
appeared to have a mental problem and also visited the bathroom a couple of times. We could tell he wanted to leave, however I was concerned about him. I called 911 and was referred to a government agency that was most understanding. An official arrived shortly with a large net and quickly captured
Finch and I helped Finch escape through an open window in our kitchen. By the way, Finch is a wild bird who had flown into the open window in my living room on my sundeck while I was watching TV. Finch entertained my wife and I for over an hour and it sure beat watching TV. Gordon MacCulloch
Shout out to those caring for our seniors Editor: I am just following up on a news item I heard yesterday about the quality of care in assisted living facilities. I am sure this was a “generalization” of seniors’ living facilities. I just want to give a shout out to all of the people who are working
in this front line position, especially to Augustine House where my mum has resided for the past two years. Things have not been easy for the seniors, or their families, but I want to commend Augustine House for the amazing action they have taken to protect their residents.
There has not been one incidence at that facility; and while we all, as family members, would like to get things back to normal, we understand the daily challenge the staff undergo in keeping our families safe and thank them from the bottom of our hearts. Wendy Latheron
Drivers with noisy mufflers must be put in their place
Editor: Why is it permitted for people to replace factoryinstalled mufflers with noisy mufflers without getting penalized? It is the responsibility of any elected government
to ensure that law-abiding citizens are being protected from the actions of stupid, naïve, uncaring members in our society. People who terrorize our community with loud mufflers need to be put in
place by the law and they need to be told that loud mufflers are not cool. Most European countries give out hefty fines and impound cars with loud mufflers. Othmar Brunner

Action must be taken to allow Delta citizens to feel safe
Editor: I’m disappointingly writing this to inquire what actions will be taken to allow citizens to feel safe in the hands of our protectors, the police. Lorraine Dubord’s actions and words are heard loud and clear. Her husband, Delta police Chief Neil Dubord, has made a conscious selection of his lifelong partner. If these values exist in Neil Dubord’s home, then he has accepted them. How can we trust him to protect us?
The police force has a higher power and motive to ensure that the people — all people of any race, colour, gender — feel safe. Major League Soccer is a great example of an organization that made a syft and appropriate decision releasing Aleksandar Katai due to his wife’s misrepresentation of its beliefs. We do not look to the MLS to protect us, however it nonetheless has shown that we can trust it. We need to see the Delta police do the same with Neil Dubord.
As a child, my family home was on Centennial Beach. As possibly the first family of colour in the neighborhood in the 1980s, we were embraced with open arms. Please do not allow a bad apple to rot the upbringing that allowed me, and many others, to believe we are grateful to live in a community where we embrace diversity and treat each other with respect. The community looks forward to Neil Dubord’s resignation. Justin Singh
Police should step aside in favour of lawyer Editor: Police handling complaints against police does not inspire confidence, so when the Delta Police Department sent Kiran Sidhu’s complaint against it to the RCMP — which has covered itself in $1 billion of muck at taxpayers’ expense — as an independent agency, I felt disgust. The more things change, the more they stay the
same. Then, curiosity led me to the Delta police website, which led me to the Delta police board webpages, which led me to the short biographies of Delta police board members. Delta’s appointment to our police board, Dr. Karen Hossack, works for the RCMP. The police world is a web — and our police and its chief’s wife
have tangled Sidhu up in it. The City of Delta should ask all police — the Delta police, the RCMP and the Vancouver police — who’ve been playing a role in this mess to step aside for a criminal lawyer from outside of B.C. who has had no dealings with B.C. police to look into Kiran Sidhu’s concerns. Greg J. Edwards
No one should be treated in such a way
Editor: Re: Altercation not a BLM moment, letter to the editor, July 2 I am extremely disheartened by George Stewart’s response to the incident between Lorraine Dubord and Kiran Sidhu, and that “an apology would have been sufficient.” The only thing he is correct about is that it is not a BLM moment. However that does not
mean it was not a racially motivated incident. I, unlike Stewart, support the community and media uproar as there needs to be a clear message/reminder that no one is allowed to treat anyone in that manner. Basic decency does not include hurling personal insults or attacking someone with a hose. Thanks for the teaching moment, Stewart. Just
had a nice recap with my kids on kindness, sharing, consideration and reaching out to those that might need a hand. How easy it could have been for Lorraine Dubord to simply point Kiran Sidhu in the right direction and make sure she got to her car safely. Thankfully our community is filled with many who would have done just that. Kim Holman
Deltans should be proud of their police dep’t Editor: Re: Altercation ignites firestorm, July 2 I know neither Kiran Sidhu, nor Lorraine Dubord or her husband, Neil. As none of us know the full details of what happened, I am not prepared to give an opinion. However, I will say that I am disappointed by the
information in the article saying that some are asking for the police chief’s firing because of what his wife did. I think we should all be proud of our local police department, including the chief. I have previously read the articles of his you have published and found them interesting, informa-
tive and well thought out. I too am an immigrant. Sixty-odd years ago I came with my family to a small town in B.C. I was white, but it made no difference — I was not born in that community, so went through lots of bullying and a hard time for the first year A. Jackson
It’s time that white people start listening for a change Editor: Dear fellow white people: No one can argue with our positive experiences with the police, etc.
Now is the time to stop talking, writing and expressing our privileged opinion. Now is the time for
us to just start listening for a change — because now must be the time of change. C. MacIntyre

Disappointed with coverage of altercation at beach
Editor: Re: Altercation ignites firestorm, July 2 I am very disappointed the Delta Optimist joined the media feeding frenzy over the altercation at Centennial Beach a few weeks ago. I have always appreciated the Optimist for its balanced reporting. Sadly with this event you, or
reporter Ian Jacques, have fallen into the same trap as other mainstream media. Certain TV news channels carried this story for five days straight. And now the Optimist has joined the fray. Certainly the wife of the police chief was in the wrong, but equally so was the person who climbed on the rocks and invaded
the Dubords’ privacy. Equally this has nothing to do with the police chief. The Optimist then compounds the problem with a headline that says, “Many on social media are calling for the chief’s dismissal.” Really? Who authorized this headline? How did the Optimist measure this, which social media did you check, what
is the count, how many is many? This is a sensationalist tabloid headline, not that of a responsible community newspaper. If this had been a situation between two people of the same colour or ethnicity, it would have rated nothing more than few lines on your Crime Beat page. in creating an alterca-
tion at any time but especially at this difficult time for all of us. Why didn’t the lady in question simply climb down from the rocks when asked? Both ladies are in the wrong. Both need to learn from it. Above all, this was not and is not racism. Those who are describing it as such and those calling for the chief’s resignation
have another agenda, an agenda that sees opportunities to inject racism into every issue. The police chief and members of the DPD need to know this community is proud of their police force, is proud of their police chief and sees no reason the chief nor any member of the DPD should resign. Roger Emsley
signs of systemic racism in DPD 15 minutes are up on Dubord incident No Editor: are taught to take orders. board level or at the senior
Editor: Re: Chief’s wife must not receive preferential treatment, letter to the editor, July 2 The incident with Lorraine Dubord and Kiran Sidhu has already garnered far more media attention and public mudslinging than it deserves. I find the letter by the Neufelds where they state they have “extreme disgust and repugnance” for Dubord’s behaviour to be a little over the top. They have prejudged and labelled this incident as an example of systemic
racism based on what? The limited video that has played repeatedly on the TV news? In your July 2 edition, much more information is disclosed, primarily by Sidhu. While I don’t dismiss or excuse the name calling or the water spraying by Dubord, Sidhu appears to be a willing participant in this childish behaviour which reminds me of two children throwing sand at each other. However, Sidhu states her own racial and sexist bias in your newspaper, so I feel that I must comment. Sidhu acknowledg-
es that she calls Dubord a “Karen,” a phrase that is considered a slur by definition and then repeatedly plays the race card, saying how unwelcome she feels in what she describes as “white space.” She says this “white space” occurs on the Tsawwassen beach, in her work environment as a teacher in Richmond and in her position as a union rep. I wonder how her coworkers feel about this statement and the way she says she feels around them? Bob Lait
Lately there has been a lot of news about discrimination, racism and now systemic racism. Unfortunately for mankind, in some form, we have all experienced it. The new buzz word is systemic racism. Systemic racism gives an unjust amount of power and resources to white people while people of colour are denied the same. Talking of power, many of us face this in our everyday lives with supervisors, bullies and people in uniform — except in the armed forces where rank has its privileges and trainees

However, the armed forces practice this in their own community. With the police force, it’s sometimes different — some police officers feel the uniform and a gun give them superiority to use excessive force either physically or in the tone of their speech. This is wrong. They must always remember they are dealing with civilians. They are in their jobs to serve and protect. As far as systemic racism, I served on the Delta police board and must admit I not did notice any signs of this either at the
management. In fact, Delta police has senior officers who are female and senior officers who are from visible minorities, all promoted from within and all promoted on merit. I have faith in our police force and its leadership. With everything in the media about policing, naturally the men and women of Delta police are also under the microscope. This is the time for police members to be professional and courteous such that the community of Delta will continue to love “their” Delta police. Hari Aroon

Richmond city council is taking a stand against the expansion of the Tilbury liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant located across the Fraser River in Delta. Council voted 8-1 to send a clear message to senior levels of government that the expansion isn’t welcome in their backyard, citing risks to the Fraser River, wildlife and air — a list of concerns were compiled by Richmond city staff about the proposed expansion. At Monday’s committee meeting, only Coun. Alexa Loo opposed the endorsement of staff’s report — to be forwarded to provincial and federal environmental assessment agencies — and a motion to state council opposed the expansion. Coun. Harold Steves asked staff to add concerns around breaches at the plant — either by “terrorists” or “crackpots” — who might cause a large-scale explosion that could have an impact on Richmond. Steves referred to an LNG plant in Boston where, when a vessel goes in and out of the plant, the bridges are closed and police and army guard the roads. “That’s why in the United States they don’t recommend having LNG anywhere near where people are living,” Steves added. Coun. Kelly Greene noted the project is double the size of Woodfibre LNG in Squamish, and that the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators recommends a 3,500-metre hazard zone around the shipping route and terminal. “This is the wrong project for here,” she said.
Coun. Carol Day suggested a meeting between council and federal and provincial environmental ministers to explain council’s opposition to the plant expansion. “We are industrializing Fraser River and putting Richmondites at extreme risk with having LNG directly across from jet fuel — surely there’s more we can do to make the ministers understand what grave consequences could happen if ever there was an accident or spill,” Day said. The upgrade to the LNG plant is planned to begin within two years. It will include a new storage tank and a marine jetty. Ian Finke, LNG operations director with FortisBC, said the plan is to have one vessel come to the jetty every five days. He said the size of ships will be limited to 100,000 cubic metres of LNG whereas export ships usually carry 200,000 to 240,000 cubic metres of LNG. Finke pointed out LNG is stored in sealed doublewalled containers that prevent oxygen from entering and igniting the fuel. Furthermore, any leak of LNG would just turn into a vapour that would dissipate into the air, he added. “At the site itself, as we transport LNG, safety is paramount (with) many, many safety considerations at play,” Finke said. He said LNG is one of the cleanest-burning fossil fuels, with 21 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than other marine fuels currently being used. It also emits fewer harmful gases and emits hardly any particulate matter, Finke explained. “It does a good job of displacing higher carbon fuels, so from our point of view, that’s a good thing.”

City gets $5.8M from senior governments for track project SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta has received a major funding boost for a much talked about track and field project. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough and Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon announced last Friday
that a new facility at North Delta Secondary will receive $5.8 million combined from the federal and provincial governments. The funding is part of a package consisting of 21 projects in the Lower Mainland that are to receive $63.7 million. “This communityfocused facility will open
up new opportunities for Deltans to stay healthy and come together, while also providing a space for local athletes to train,” said Qualtrough during a virtual news conference. “To say the North Delta track project is a labour of love would be an understatement. For years, people have been working so hard
to make this a reality.” “For over three years people in our community have been organizing for a new track and facilities at North Delta Secondary School, and I am so proud that our New Democrat government could make this vision a reality,” said Kahlon in a news release. Mayor George Harvie
said the track facility will be the first of its kind in Delta, allowing athletes to train locally while supporting the broader community with new recreation opportunities. Delta council last month approved the first contract for the project, $4.8 million for civic engineering work. Tenders for the synthetic
surface and athletic equipment will follow as well as a separate process for the field house. The estimated $8 million facility includes a 400-metre rubberized track with lighting, seating, washrooms, a natural turf infield, as well as other features such as two tennis courts.

Tsawwassen seniors show appreciation for Dr. Henry
Legion celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day
Messages sent to provincial health officer

The Tsawwassen Legion celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day with a First Nations dance demonstration that branch president Bill Belsey says made everyone want to get up and try it. And they did just that thanks to Shyama Priya and John Miller of Wild Moccasin Dancers. Belsey says the event was a great way to celebrate and remember the First Nations people who served to help our country stay free. The Tsawwassen Legion, located in Century Square at 22-1835-56th St., has reopened with safety features in place. In March, as the severity of COVID-19 came to light, residents at The Waterford and The Wexford in Tsawwassen retreated to their suites and turned on their TVs. That’s when they met Dr. Bonnie Henry for the first time. Months later, with a successfully flattened curve, these seniors have sent messages of thanks to the provincial health officer. “I watch with pride as you deliver your daily calm and comforting message to the people of British Columbia,” wrote Ella in a card addressed to Dr. Henry. “You are an inspiration to us all as we try to embrace your hope for a future that will bring its own challenges.” Residents and staff at the two Bria complexes sent dozens of messages of thanks in the form of handwritten cards, smiling photos and a video message directly to Dr. Henry in Victoria. “In our homes, Dr.

Cyclists shed bikes in ‘crazy’ cancer fundraiser With annual Ride2survive cancelled, participants opt to walk 100 kilometres in a single day IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
The Crazy Hikers weren’t going to let the COVID-19 pandemic stop them from raising thousands for cancer research. This year marked the 16th annual Ride2survive, a one-day fundraising event whereby cyclists ride 400 kilometres from Kelowna to Delta — all supported by Delta police who safely escort the riders. The ride has raised $9 million over the years. When this year’s event, slated for June 20, was cancelled, the almost 50 members of the Crazy Hikers decided to do something different — walking 100 kilometres in one day. “This was all under the Ride2survive umbrella,” said Vicki Kunzli, who has been a participant of Ride2survive for 16 years. “The group inspired eight independent social distancing fundraising fitness challenge groups. We are continuing to raise money

He raised $13,000. The Crazy Hikers started at midnight and finished 21 hours later with 10 walkers completing 100 kilometres, 10 more doing 50 kilometres and 25 com-
pleting 25 kilometres. They raised $23,000. The Crazy Hikers started in south Vancouver, walked through Richmond, Ladner and Tsawwassen, back along the Mud Bay dike, over the Alex Fraser Bridge to Richmond and then the Knight Street Bridge back to their start location. North Delta resident Rich Gestle was one of the 100-kilometre walkers and said it was harder than
riding a bike 400 kilometres. Gestle has done the Ride2survive annual ride 13 times. Carol Peters, another North Delta resident, raised $4,100. She started her walk on Friday, June 26 at 4 a.m. and finished on Saturday, June 27 at 2:30 a.m., walking 22.5 hours. She completed 16-kilometre loops in her Sunwood neighbourhood. She rode the Ride2survive in 2011. “These were all huge walks in one day,” added Kunzli. “It was a grueling challenge both physically and mentally. Lots of blisters, sore knees, sore feet, sore legs and sore backs, but completely successful events.” Kunzli said there are nine events inspired by the Crazy Hikers planned between June 20 and Sept. 9 from Vancouver Island to Alberta. The fundraising goal is $100,000 and the group is at almost $60,000 from the three events completed thus far.

Popular thrift store set to reopen next week Delta Hospital Auxiliary exercising abundance of caution to protect volunteers and customers SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It had been a busy hub of Ladner Village until COVID-19. The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store has been closed for months due to the pandemic, remaining that way even as retailers around it began opening their doors in recent weeks. But that’s about to change as the popular Delta Street thrift store is set to reopen next week. Due to concerns about the age and vulnerability of volunteers at the store, an abundance of caution is being taken, said acting auxiliary president Cathy Bayley. The store is scheduled to open next Tuesday, July 14, with Plexiglass in place, masks and other safety protocols now standard practice for the foreseeable future. “Because of the age of our volunteers, some of them, understandably, chose just to wait a bit
The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store in Ladner Village reopens next Tuesday. before coming back. So we don’t have right now quite as many volunteers as we have had in the past. We’re finding ways around the problem,” explained Bayley. According to the Delta
Hospital Auxiliary, in normal months around 220 volunteers provide over 5,000 hours. Many of them are senior citizens, so protecting their health, as well as the health of customers, is a priority.
Bayley noted people have been generally good about not dropping off items, especially unwanted junk, in front of the store. “The bins have been taken away because our

donations are going to have to be quite different. People would just drive up and hand the fellows inside their bags or boxes of donations, but now we’re going to be setting up tables outside and we’ll
have to limit the number of donations and we’re going to have volunteers who are going to help sort through things we think we can sell. We’re also going to be storing the donations for 72 hours before we sort them,” said Bayley. The closure has been an opportunity to do some painting and give the place a bit of an interior facelift, she added. While the auxiliary’s gift store and coffee shop inside Delta Hospital remain closed for now, it’s the loss of income from the thrift store for an extended period this year which could potentially impact how much new equipment the society will be able to purchase for the hospital next year. Noting the organization never commits to purchasing items for the hospital until it has the money, Bayley said the auxiliary has the funds to follow through on purchase commitments for the hospital this year.
COMMUNITY SPIRIT
A century of commitment to community news A
century ago Delta was without a newspaper. The shuttering of the Delta Times in 1914 left a void in the community meaning shopkeepers couldn’t reach customers, government couldn’t communicate with constituents and residents had a hard time finding out what others were doing. The Delta Board of Trade, the predecessor of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, saw the negative impact the lack of a newspaper was having on Delta and reached out to the Dunning family, publishers of two papers in Alberta, to start one here. The first issue of The Weekly Optimist was printed on March 23, 1922. Over the past 98 years the Optimist has chronicled all the big, and many of the small, events that have shaped this community, from the fire that wiped out half of Ladner’s Chinatown to the building of the Boundary Bay Airport to support Second World War efforts. The Optimist was there when the George Massey Tunnel opened and documented the subsequent building boom
that took this place from a quiet farming and fishing village to a bustling suburb. The Optimist has covered all that matters to the people of Delta over the years and continues that today with extensive reporting, both in print and online, on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the pandemic has exacted a significant financial toll, forcing many of our advertisers to close their doors until this storm has passed, which in turn has had a considerable impact on our operation.

In this time of uncertainty, we are reaching out to those of you who find value in local, community news to ask for your support. Your contribution, however large or small, will enable us to continue delivering reliable and credible news to you – our friends, our family and our neighbours. Contributions may be made at support.delta-optimist.com, or if you prefer not to donate online, you may call 604-946-4451, or mail a cheque to 5008 47A Avenue, Ladner, BC, V4K 1T8.

Leading Ingredient For Acid Reflux Bouts Linked to Anti-Aging Phenomenon
Scientific studies show breakthrough acid reflux treatment also helps maintain vital health and helps protect users from the serious conditions that accompany aging such as fatigue and poor cardiovascular health Stewart Blum Health Correspondence Seattle, WA – A clinical study on a leading acid reflux pill shows that its key ingredient relieves digestive symptoms while suppressing the inflammation that contributes to premature aging in men and women. And, if consumer sales are any indication of a product’s effectiveness, this ‘acid reflux pill turned anti-aging phenomenon’ is nothing short of a miracle. Sold under the brand name AloeCure, it was already backed by clinical data documenting its ability to provide all day and night relief from heartburn, acid reflux, constipation, irritable bowel, gas, bloating, and more. But soon doctors started reporting some incredible results… “With AloeCure, my patients started reporting less joint pain, more energy, better sleep, stronger immune systems… even less stress and better skin, hair, and nails” explains Dr. Liza Leal; a leading integrative health specialist and company spokesperson.
Doctors are calling AloeCure the greatest accidental health discovery in decades! AloeCure contains an active ingredient that helps improve digestion by acting as a natural acid-buffer that improves the pH balance of your stomach. Scientists now believe that this acid imbalance is what contributes to painful inflammation throughout the rest of the body.
A healthy gut is the key to a reducing swelling and inflammation that can wreak havoc on the human body. Doctors say this is why AloeCure works on so many aspects of your health. AloeCure’s active ingredient is made from the healing compound found in Aloe vera. It is both safe and healthy. There are also no known side effects. Scientists believe that it helps improve digestive and immune health by acting as a natural acid-buffer that improves the pH balance of your stomach. Research has shown that this acid imbalance contributes to painful inflammation throughout your entire body and is why AloeCure seems to be so effective.
EXCITING RESULTS FROM PATIENTS To date over 5 million bottles of AloeCure have been sold, and the community seeking non-pharma therapy for their GI health continues to grow.
“ACCIDENTAL”ANTI-AGING BREAKTHROUGH: Originally developed for digestive issues, AloeCure not only ends digestion nightmares... it revitalizes the entire body. Some are calling it the greatest accidental discovery in decades.
drugs.
According to Dr. Leal, her patients are absolutely thrilled with their results and are often shocked by how fast it works.
This would explain why so many users are experiencing impressive results so quickly.
“For the first time in years, they are free from concerns about their digestion and almost every other aspect of their health,” says Dr. Leal, “and I recommend it to everyone who wants to improve GI health without resorting to drugs, surgery, or OTC medications.”
With daily use, AloeCure helps users look and feel decades younger and defend against some of the painful inflammation that accompanies aging and can make life hard.
“I was always in ‘indigestion hell.’ Doctors put me on all sorts of antacid remedies. Nothing worked. Dr. Leal recommended I try AloeCure. And something remarkable happened… Not only were all the issues I had with my stomach gone - completely gone – but I felt less joint pain and I was able to actually sleep through the night.” With so much positive feedback, it’s easy to see why the community of believers is growing and sales for the new pill are soaring.
REVITALIZE YOUR ENTIRE BODY
AloeCure Taken Daily • Helps End Digestion Nightmares • Reduces appearance of Wrinkles & Increases Elasticity • Supports Healthy Immune System
Relieving other stressful symptoms related to GI health like pain, bloating, fatigue, cramping, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.

Now, backed with new clinical studies, AloeCure is being recommended by doctors everywhere to help improve digestion, calm painful inflammation, soothe joint pain, and even reduce the appearance of wrinkles – helping patients to look and feel decades younger.
The active ingredient is a rare Aloe Vera component known as acemannan.
Readers can now reclaim their energy, vitality, and youth regardless of age or current level of health.
Made from of 100% organic Aloe Vera, AloeCure uses a proprietary process that results in the highest quality, most bio-available levels of acemannan known to exist.
HOW TO GET ALOECURE
The daily allowance of AloeCure has shown to calm this inflammation which is why AloeCure is so effective.
FIX YOUR GUT & FIGHT INFLAMMATION Since hitting the market, sales for AloeCure have taken off and there are some very good reasons why. To start, the clinical studies have been impressive. Participants taking the active ingredient in AloeCure saw a stunning 100% improvement in digestive symptoms, which includes fast and lasting relief from reflux. Users also experienced higher energy levels and endurance, relief from chronic discomfort and better sleep. Some even reported healthier looking skin, hair, and nails.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND ALOECURE
According to Dr. Leal and several of her colleagues, improving the pH balance of your stomach and restoring gut health is the key to revitalizing your entire body. When your digestive system isn’t healthy, it causes unwanted stress on your immune system, which results in inflammation in the rest of the body. The recommended daily allowance of acemannan in AloeCure has been proven to support digestive health, and calm painful inflammation without side effects or

The lightest burden of all
In the 11th chapter of Matthew, Jesus tells us to: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 3For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (29-30). The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an incredible burden upon the shoulders of the world, and in some way we have all had to carry it. For many, the pandemic has increased the weight of already incredibly burdened lives. All which oppresses and burdens humanity is rooted in the heaviest weight of all: the weight
by our sin. Out of great mercy and love, God sent Jesus Christ into the world to relieve us of this most burdensome weight. Christ did so on the cross of Cavalry by taking the weight off our shoulders and taking it upon himself. He took our death and exchanged it for his life. He exchanged our sinfulness for his righteousness. When you find yourself feeling weighed down by bad news and sin, turn to Jesus and listen to him. You will find rest for your soul in God’s unconditional promise of forgiveness and new life.

SDSS parents get together to give their grads a deserving send-off IAN JACQUES

A grad celebration in a Tsawwassen neighbourhood late last month included a grad walk among other activities.
It was a night to remember as 40 grads from the class of 2020 at South Delta Secondary gathered to mark their special milestone. Unable to hold grad walks and traditional ceremonies this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Delta School District worked with GradsBC on virtual ceremonies for this year’s grads. But Tsawwassen moms Mellodee Rayne, Kim Bonn and Angela Jope wanted to do more to ensure the grads had a deserving send-off. So on Friday, June 26, a grad celebration was held at Rayne’s Tsawwassen home and in the cul-desac, complete with a red carpet walk, family dance, party games and a catered meal from Illuminate Restorante. Rayne said everything was in keeping with B.C. health guidelines and social bubbles.

Grads and their parents took part in a family dance. “Generally the three of us got together to do this, but other parents did help with supplies,” said Rayne. “We let the neighbours know we would be doing this and got their permission to not park on the street, so the red carpet could be put out. Many of those neighbours came out, social distanced and watched everything, so that gave a lot of people a lot of joy and we received a lot of great compliments. Even the senior homes up the street came out and remarked how wonderful it was to see.” Rayne said Illuminate
went above and beyond as did other parents. “Tsawwassen moms and dads rock. We are a very supportive and encouraging community and have shown our kids there is nothing we can’t get through,” said Rayne. “We approached the school board twice with different ideas that we thought they could be a part of and that they could be a leader on it, but they kyboshed the ideas. We thought it would be great for the grads to have banners alongside 12th Avenue. It would have been so cool to have the grads up on banners or
other signs on 56th Street. They really didn’t put any effort into other than the virtual ceremony, which I’m sure people appreciated, but that wasn’t going to be enough for us. “Everyone shared in this…parents and grads. It was all very safe and all the parents were made aware and supported the social distancing and the health guidelines. We just felt that this class deserved to be honoured and respected. They just deserve the best and that’s what they got.” She said what made the event so special was that it was really community driven. “The comments and compliments that we got from the neighbourhood through the last week… I believe that this will set a precedent for the graduation classes to come. I think this is something that could always be done in your own community. It can belong to the parents more, rather than just the school doing it.”

Michaeline Moore (Mike), 86, of Tsawwassen, B.C., passed away peacefully at the Waterford on June 18, 2020 after a lengthy illness. Mike was born in London, England in 1934. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Fred, her brother in England, Roddy, her four sons, Allen, Michael, David, and Roderick, and her five grandchildren and great grandson. Mike’s career began as a stenographer for both the Canadian Department of National Defense in South Kensington, England, and at Canada House in London. In 1958, she sailed to Canada with her lifetime friend Mary Brown, aboard the liner Arcadia. In Canada, she settled first in Ottawa. Within four months of employment with the Department of National Defense, she was promoted to secretary for the RCAF Chief of the Airstaff. Here, she met her future husband.
RANSON-BOND-HARRISON, Vanessa
HAERING, Peter June 23, 2020
Vanessa Ranson-Bond-Harrison passed away on Friday, June 26th at 3:30PM in Vancouver, BC.
On June 23, 2020, Peter Haering passed away at Delta Hospital.
Vanessa was a beloved daughter of Danina (Donna) Bond-Thorsteinson and Murray Bond. She had the most beautiful smile that could light up your soul. She could spend hours staring at the stars. She was a lover of the arts, animals, and fashion. She especially enjoyed dancing and listening to music. She attended Tswwassen Junior and graduated from Delta Senior Secondary in Ladner, and then completed her Esthetician Certificate at The Blanche MacDonald Centre in Vancouver. She studied acting at Richmond Art and Theatre School. She was funny, outgoing and vivacious, but she was also introverted and introspective. She was nicknamed “Vaneskis”, a symbol of her Polish roots from her Mom. She was a symbol of beauty and grace. She was fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She was very close to her Mom and we will always remember her infectious smile, piercing beautiful blue eyes and caring personality. Her presence in our lives will be sorely missed.
He will be sorely missed by his wife, Sylvie and brother, Rudi; his children, Carl, Patrick (Dawn), Heidi (Grant), and William; his grandchildren, Joel and Kate; his nieces, Linda (Jason) and Susan (Dale); and his nephew, Eric (Valerie).
When I think of Vanessa, I celebrate the good memories I have of her. Life is fragile and short and should be lived to the fullest. She leaves behind her parents, and her natal father Randolph Ranson, sisters Amanda and Tara and brothers Jimmy and Kelley, and her stepfather Peter Thorsteinson and her stepsister Katherine Thorsteinson.
Peter studied at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto, following which he embarked on a career in meteorology that spanned 35 years. He was proud of his work, often providing meteorological analysis and commentary for Vancouver publications, and had the occasional guest spot on television. At the time of his retirement, he was still considered a nationally recognized expert in his field. Peter was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending his free time hiking, camping, fishing, and cross−country skiing all over BC with his children and friends. In his later years, he continued to stay active with his daily walks around Tsawwassen, during which he would greet neighbours with his signature, "All the best!" He loved Shakespeare, the Beatles, Pete Fountain, and Harry Belafonte. However, his favourite singer of all time was Bob Dylan. He was quick to remind anyone who brought up the singer’s name in discussion that he had predicted Dylan’s Nobel Prize decades in advance.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
There will be no service at his request. In his memory, a plaque will be placed next to his parents, Rudolf and Selma, in Boundary Bay Cemetery, Tsawwassen.
The family prefers any donations be made to https://www.raincityhousing.org/lux
Donations can be made to the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation.
Mike and Fred were married in 1959. They lived in Ottawa in the early 1960s, followed briefly with Toronto, then Edmonton from 1963 to 1970, and finally Tsawwassen from 1970 to the present. Remarkably, as if raising four boys was not enough, she provided secretarial assistance through an office temp agency throughout the years. Her efficient, adaptive skills served her well inside multiple iconic British Columbian companies. Reserved, never one to promote always the gentle, calm spirit in provider of many beautiful family parties, and Christmas gatherings; loved and will be forever missed.

TURNBULL, John William September 21, 1943 - July 1, 2020 On July 1st, 2020, John William Turnbull suddenly passed away at Delta Hospital. John is cherished by his surviving wife, Diane, who he was happily married to for 53 loving years. John is lovingly survived by daughter Candice DeNiet, son-in-law Bruce DeNiet and granddaughter Ashley DeNiet. John is remembered by his sister Anne and husband Pat Roche. PEDERSEN, Egon S. September 10, 1925 − July 3, 2020 On Friday, July 3, 2020, Egon Pedersen passed away peacefully at the age of 94. Egon was born in Mou, Denmark in 1925, immigrating to Canada in 1955 and settling in Vancouver. Egon was a commercial fisherman and travelled the world fishing, relocating to North Delta in 1974 to raise a family. He was a regular at the Annieville Slough and a member of N.D. Senior Center, until he eventually moved to Langley in 2014. Egon enjoyed spending his retirement hours at the billiards tables and feeding wildlife on his walks. Egon was predeceased by his lifetime love and wife of 50 years, Veronica in 2012. Egon is survived by his three children: son, Michael (Tanya), and daughters, Rose Short (Al) and Anita Carew (Peter); along with five grandchildren, Trevor, Jeremy, Brendan, Ryan and Maya. His family is thankful for the care and dedication of the staff at Harrison Landing, and during his final days, to the exceptional nurses and doctors at Langley Memorial Hospital. Due to COVID precautions, the memorial service will be limited to immediate family.
