Mural could be first of many PHOTO BY IAN JACQUES
The first of what could be many murals in Ladner Village is now complete. Ours to Preserve by Tsawwassen artist Gary Nay was recently finished after eight weeks. The colourful mural is on a side wall of the Telus building facing 48th Avenue. The mural program is just one of several ideas the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee has put forward to add more vibrancy to the village. According to the City of Delta, the mural highlights themes of culture, industry and nature, following the Fraser River as it winds its way through Delta’s past, present and future.

Hospice care not a concern
Fraser Health tells mayor quality of care at Irene Thomas Hospice being upheld SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The quality of care at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner is not a concern. That’s according to Fraser Health president and CEO Dr. Victoria Lee, who wrote a letter to Delta Mayor George Harvie in response to concerns he had raised and his request for an inspection and audit of the facility. Lee noted Fraser Health’s licensing and palliative clinical staff have been visiting the hospice regularly to review the services in follow-up to concerns that have been raised. “Investigations to date have confirmed that the quality of care provided to the residents continues to be upheld by the dedicated staff working at the hospice, and no concerns regarding the care have been identified. While we have not audited the Delta Hospice Society’s
finances, we have no indication that funding is not being utilized as per the service agreement,” Lee explained. Harvie has also asked the provincial government to undertake a financial audit of the hospice and is waiting for a response. In his letter to Finance Minister Carole James, Harvie noted there are serious questions raised about the management of the society under its president, Angelina Ireland, including the appointment of directors outside the organization, membership denials to local residents and restricted access to society records. “Delta Hospice is very much a community asset – staffed with local volunteers and funded largely by private donations from people who are upset that these funds are now being used to exclude people who do not subscribe to a particular set of values, and

society assets remain with the facility for the benefit of the community, notwithstanding the termination of provincial funding and the potential removal of the society,”
he stated. Former board member Chris Pettypiece recently told the Optimist that a mid-August date has been set in the Delta Hospice Society board’s appeal of his petition to the B.C. Supreme Court which successfully halted a planned meeting by the board to have the society’s constitution amended to become Christian-based. That was the latest move by the board, which is opposed to providing Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) at the 10-bed hospice. The current board reversed a decision by the previous board to allow it. Fraser Health has mandated non-faithbased hospices offer MAiD, which has put Delta Hospice at odds with the health authority and provincial government, which announced the society would lose its funding by next February.
Changes coming to curbside recycling collection SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta’s revised curbside recycling program is going to get underway soon. Homeowners have been mailed a postcard highlighting the upcoming changes that will be part of Recycle 2020. Grey boxes for glass bottles and jars as well as new, larger yellow bags and a new Collection Guide will be delivered to all houses next month. Curbside recycling will be collected weekly on the same day as garbage and green cans. Delta council earlier this year voted in favour of the new program but
its implementation had been delayed due to COVID-19. The city entered into an agreement with Recycle B.C. as a contracted collection partner for curbside and multifamily recycling services. A not-for-profit organization responsible for residential packaging and paper recycling in the province, Recycle B.C. currently provides funding for collection, depot and post-collection services for the majority of residential households in the province. Residents will have to start putting newspaper and mixed paper streams together, collect glass containers separately
and can no longer dispose of plastic bags and Styrofoam food containers at curbside. Plastic bags and food containers have to be returned to Recycle B.C. depots, including the Tsawwassen Return-it Centre, Ladner Bottle Depot, Scott Road Bottle Depot and City of Vancouver Landfill. “The collected materials will now be delivered to Recycle B.C. postcollection facilities and Delta will no longer be responsible for these post-collection processing costs,” engineering director Steven Lan told council earlier this year. Lan said five or six years ago the city was
receiving upwards of $400,000 per year for its recyclables, but that market has completely dried up and Delta is now having to pay to have its recyclables processed. Six years ago, Delta declined participating in the Multi-Material B.C. program due to contractual concerns and potential service impacts. At the time, the city’s main
concern was the elimination of glass, plastic bags and Styrofoam food containers from the blue box program. Delta staff note the program is now servicing over 98 per cent of households in the province and has proven to be a success. For more information about the program, check delta.ca/recycle.

Delta looking to relax suite regulations Proposed changes to lot width and parking requirements still must receive council approval SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Some major changes are proposed for the City of Delta’s secondary suites bylaw. Staff has brought forward amendments that would relax regulations for suites by eliminating the requirement for a minimum lot width of 15 metres (49 feet) and eliminating the requirement for an unobstructed secondary suite parking space. The changes would allow for secondary suites in all singledetached dwellings, provided that three off-street parking spaces can be provided. Property owners must meet B.C. Building Code requirements for a new secondary suite. A staff report notes that, regardless of the design of a secondary suite parking space, it is difficult for bylaw inspectors to enforce tenant parking requirements. “While staff continue to require the owners to identify a designated

Delta council will consider amending secondary suite regulations, including parking requirements, to bring the city more in line with other jurisdictions. off-street parking space for their tenant, there is no requirement for the tenant to occupy that space, nor for the owners to park within their garage. Where there are suites on any given street
(whether authorized or unauthorized and whether occupied by a tenant or family), drivers will find parking spaces on their property or on the street which are most convenient to them,” the
report notes. The report also found that unauthorized suites continue to be identified, with approximately 25 to 35 located every week by city staff. The majority of these suites would not
comply with current zoning requirements related to lot width or parking, according to the city. Staff explored what other municipalities, including Surrey, have done when it comes to
secondary suites. The Delta staff report also notes that when it comes to enforcement, Surrey is currently requiring any residents reporting unauthorized secondary suites to declare the reasons for their complaint, such as parking or noise impacts. Bylaw enforcement staff members then work with owners to manage those impacts rather than automatically requiring decommissioning of unauthorized suites. Delta council could still have staff further refine the proposed changes before a report goes back to a regular meeting of council for preliminary approval. A previous report this spring noted adopting changes would put Delta more in line with other municipalities, allowing more properties to be eligible for a suite while streamlining the process. Since secondary suites were approved for singledetached dwellings in 2010, 3,556 legal suites have been approved in Delta.

Delta South MLA Ian Paton introduced legislation last week designed to open up new opportunities for farming families and give British Columbians access to more fresh produce and local products. “I am pleased to be introducing another bill that will support greater opportunity for farming families and those who want to find new ways to share their farm products,” said Paton. “There are people throughout the province who would love the opportunity to sell fresh baked goods, fruits and veggies, jams and jellies, and so much more. Point Roberts fire Chief Christopher Carleton is requesting both governments recognize the unique circumstances and relax some cross-border travel restrictions for the American peninsula.
Point fire chief seeking changes at the border Christopher Carleton asks for greater access IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The fire chief in Point Roberts is the latest voice calling for the Canadian and U.S. governments to reopen the border in some form. Christopher Carleton wrote a letter last week on behalf of the residents of Point Roberts, a community he contends is caught between a pandemic and the politics of two countries. “Given the unique challenge of our geographical location and the growing toll this takes on all aspects of our community from its economic viability to our collective mental health, I ask that the U.S. and Canada take the unparalleled efforts to realize our community’s expanded predicament and help us forge ideas to safely reconcile our pressing needs for open transit through Canada, balanced with the demands of our current emergency state,” wrote Carleton. “The existing public health crisis is unprecedented in our time. We all understand that drastic measures have been required to ensure the safety of our respective citizenry. In many ways,
our community is suffering disproportionately from the compounding impacts of the profound isolation now being experienced.” Carleton points out that Point Roberts has been, to date, perhaps the safest community in the U.S. with respect to COVID-19. He said the fire department, in conjunction with a local clinic, has sponsored continuous testing with approximately half of all permanent residents tested. “I am not currently aware of any positive cases within our community,” he said. Carleton said Point Roberts is a place where U.S. and Canadian cultures and values intersect, interact and blend in ways that have allowed everyone to prosper. “I ask that both governments recognize the unique circumstances we face as an integrated, trans-border community, and find a way for U.S., dual citizens and green card holders of Point Roberts to transit openly as needed to the United States mainland,” he said. “Canadians or others who legally own property in our community, and can prove this ownership,
should also be granted access as appropriately required during this historic event to care for such property.” Tsawwassen resident Kevin McIntosh recently presented U.S. and Canadian government officials with a petition of more than 3,000 names in the hopes that Canadians with property in Point Roberts could cross the line to perform routine maintenance. Many who signed the petition own cottages and worry that without regular maintenance they will fall into disrepair. They raise concerns over wildlife causing damage to vacant buildings as well as the possibility of leaks and other issues. There are also worries about insurance not being valid if structures are unattended. Many suggest that crossing the border to check on property should be deemed essential travel so long as those who cross only go to and from their properties. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough previously told the Optimist she has “a ton of sympathy” for Canadians who can’t get to their cottages, but isn’t sure when they’ll be able to cross the line again.

• July 20, 12:14 p.m., 9000-block of River Road: Police were called to theft of a trailer from a business lot. The date of the theft is unknown and staff report the trailer was empty at the time of theft
but has an approximate value of $15,000. • July 23, 12:54 p.m., 5000-block of 48B Avenue: Owner reported a theft from auto to police that included personal information and CDs. The vehicle’s window had been left open half way. Police advised the owner to take proactive measures to avoid identity theft and documented the incident. • July 25, 11:52 pm, Chamberlayne Avenue: A caller reported a large, loud party ongoing since the afternoon. Police attended and located a small gathering. Police spoke to the host who was cautioned about the noise, and agreed to bring the party inside. No further issues. • July 26, 7:45 p.m., Galbraith Crescent at 60A Street: Police were advised of a possible impaired driver and
conducted a traffic stop. A breath test was administered and the driver failed. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. • July 26, 4:09 a.m., Massey Drive at 44th Avenue: Police conducted a traffic stop to check driver sobriety and administered a breath test which the driver failed. The driver refused a second test. Police issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was impounded. The driver walked away from the scene.

• July 19, 8:01 p.m., 1300-block of Tsawwassen Drive: Police were called to reports of a possible impaired driver. A traffic stop was conducted upon police’s
arrival and reasonable suspicion was formed of impairment. A breath sample was taken twice in which the driver failed both times. A 90-day immediate roadside prohibition was served to the driver and their vehicle was towed. • July 20, 9:42 p.m., 1300-block of Tsawwassen Drive: Police were conducting a roadblock to check for driver sobriety. A vehicle had entered the stop where the driver appeared to be nervous and smoking a cigarette. A breath sample demand was made, but the driver refused. An automatic 90-day roadside prohibition for refusing was served to the driver and his vehicle was towed. • July 22, 2:40 p.m., 5600-block of 10th Avenue: Police observed a vehicle run a stop sign. The vehicle then
proceeded to run several more stop signs and change lanes without signaling. A traffic stop was conducted where a distinct odour of liquor was detected on the driver’s breath. A breath sample was taken resulting in the driver receiving a threeday immediate roadside prohibition. The driver left the scene on foot. • July 23, 12 a.m., 4700block of Nixon Avenue: Police were called to a theft from a vehicle. The owner of the vehicle noticed his passport, permanent resident card and $300 cash were taken from the car. The owner believes the doors of the car were left unlocked. • July 24, 2:19 p.m., 4800-block of Canoe Pass Way: Police were called to a local business for a report of a male drinking a bottle of alcohol in his vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated and the bottle
of alcohol was observed in plain view. Police administered a breath test which the driver failed twice. The driver was served a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The vehicle was towed and the driver got a ride home from police. • July 25, 8:30 p.m., Boundary Bay: Complainant contacted police to report her two children had gone out in an inflatable canoe, and were now about one mile off shore. She was concerned the children were in distress, and unable to get back on their own. Police contacted the coast guard which attended, but by the time they arrived the canoe was in shallow water and close to shore as the children made it back on their own. Both children were wearing life jackets and in good spirits after their adventure.

Board extends Derik Lord’s day parole by six months IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Derik Lord has been granted a six-month extension to his day parole almost 30 years after a grisly double murder in Tsawwassen. Following a review by the Parole Board of Canada in March, Lord was granted day parole for a four-month period. Another review was conducted by the board in early July with a decision released to the Optimist Tuesday afternoon.
After 27 years behind bars, Lord, one of three teenagers convicted in a 1990 double murder, was denied day parole last September, but in January a review of that decision was initiated. That review concluded Lord would not present an undue risk to society if released on day parole. In the most recent review, the board said it was satisfied that Lord has negotiated a successful initial transition to the community. The parole board
previously imposed a number of conditions that Lord must still abide by, including no contact with the deceased victims’ families, no travel to Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland and no associating with any person believed to be involved in criminal activity and/or substance abuse. Lord, David Muir and Darren Huenemann were all convicted in 1992 of killing Huenemann’s mother and grandmother in 1990.

A former Delta teacher facing several child pornography charges has turned himself in and is now awaiting a further court date. Surrey RCMP have confirmed that Elazar
Reshef, a former teacher at North Delta’s Gray Elementary, turned himself into Surrey provincial court on July 16 following a B.C.-wide arrest warrant. According to court records, Reshef, a Surrey resident, has been charged with two counts
of making or publishing child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. He made his initial appearance on July 16 and is scheduled to appear in court next on Sept. 11. Court documents show that Reshef is not in custody.

beach is supposed to be a place to enjoy the sunshine, but it looks like there’s a little too much heat in Boundary Bay these days. The problem with Centennial Beach is simple: It’s too popular. It hasn’t changed much over the years, save for a new multi-purpose building a while back, so its increased attractiveness has as much to do with a growth in the region’s population as anything else, but regardless of what’s driving it, this popularity has created issues that are raising the temperature in Boundary Bay. Overflow traffic, where those turned away from a full beach parking lot continue into Boundary Bay in search of a spot, has become such a problem that city hall is test driving a permit parking program this summer. Some don’t like the idea of city streets being off limits to those who pay taxes here, but as unjust as that might seem, the weekend influx isn’t fair to those in the Bay, so it only makes sense to do what other jurisdictions do when an amenity creates parking headaches. The other issue that has thrown fuel on the fire in this most abnormal of years revolves around whether there should be a maximum capacity at Centennial Beach, a limit after which people are turned away. The beach is a public amenity so that’s a hard one to wrap your head around, but in this age of COVID-19, it’s something that should at least be studied. Although it’s easier to space out at a beach than in many other public places, even a swath of sand has its limitations, so perhaps it becomes one of those spots where reservations are required, like is now the case at our recently reopened public outdoor pools. Not sure how palatable, or feasible, such an approach would be, but limiting access in an effort to prevent virus spread would also go a long way to addressing traffic woes.
Summer fun only bike ride away for carefree children
I
have been lucky to see many of my young farming buddies when I have been out and about on my watering rounds. They are, for the most part, highly mobile on bikes, scooters and skateboards and can usually be seen with a Popsicle or Slurpee in hand. We stop to chat about all kinds of things and as quickly as they appear, they speed away to their next destination. My friends and I at that young age covered a lot of ground on our bikes in the summer. When you are a carefree 10-year-old, summer can be a magical time. We had several routes in our playbook and often we would do the fruit circuit depending on how hot it was and how hungry we were. In Vancouver, the corner of Carnarvon and 42nd Avenue was usually the first stop. There was a massive plum tree there in a backyard that luckily had several fruit laden branches that crept over a fence and provided ample fruit energy for about 15 minutes. Next were the blackberries at Kerrisdale Annex and after that the cherries in old man

Craven’s backyard. He was a mean old dude so we had to be commando like and crawl up the slope of his backyard to the base of the tree before climbing all over each other to reach the fruit. I recall that nearly everyone had some sort of fruit tree in their yards at the time. When some of the older homes began being replaced, someone forgot about the trees in the development plans. I believe that will change in light of COVID-19 and I know that people are once again looking to the yard as a source of fresh fruit and vegetables. When we were done on our first ride of the day we would usually head to one of our own
backyards to turn on the sprinkler and have some good old fashioned water fun. A quick dry on a towel on the lawn somewhere and it was time to start over again. As long as a mom provided the necessary amount of watermelon, Popsicles and lemonade, we would spend hours and hours enjoying a simple past time. I was lucky to spend large chunks of summer on the Sunshine Coast as a kid but always enjoyed the simplicity of my friends, my bike and a backyard. I feel for families that may not be able to take any time off during summer due to complexities of the pandemic and am hopeful that Metro Vancouver may consider altering watering restrictions for the rest of the summer by changing hours for lawn sprinkling from 4 to 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. so that kids can enjoy the epic fun of a wet backyard — just like the old days. No one sets out to become addicted to something
Editor: Re: Kinder terms needed when dealing with addiction, letter to the editor, July 23 Thank you, Dane Tobias, for pointing out that health issues in all forms, including addiction issues, are not dirty. And thank you, Ingrid Abbott, for reminding us that compassion and kindness are what are needed when trying to address and support the many and varied persons and families dealing with addiction issues. “Drug addicts” are everywhere. So are addicts. There are slightly different and broad definitions of addiction depending on where you look. A standard dictionary defines addiction as
“the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing or activity.” It is a complex condition. It is a brain disease. It is not a lack of willpower. I have always been dismayed that many individuals when talking about addicts are usually referring to those who have a problem with substances such as heroin, morphine, opiods, etc. Yes, the tragic circumstances and lives lost through such potent drugs are shattering. But look closer. Most of us are addicts of some form or another. Do we not all have “dirty secrets?” Alcohol, cigarettes, anti-anxiety meds, sex, caffeine, inhalants, food, fitness, marijuana,
gambling, work, social media. Some people are addicted to other people. The list is long. No one sets out to become addicted to something. Most people can’t choose the environment they are brought up in. Every one of us copes in life the best we can. No one should feel ashamed or less of a person because they have a health issue, no matter what it is. It should not matter what part of the body it manifests in. I believe this horrific pandemic has shown how caring and understanding we can be towards others. Let’s try to include everyone under this umbrella. Including ourselves. Jo Robertson
Have the bunnies returned to Ladner? Editor: A few years ago there was much made about the number of feral rabbits that were increasingly appearing in Ladner, mainly around city hall. It was suggested these were pets being released by persons tired of raising and caring for rabbits as pets. Our city manager (now mayor) leaped into action. Problem solved. We live in Ladner not far from city hall and we
have rabbits or a rabbit. Can’t tell if it’s one or 10. I see a rabbit in my yard most days. My neighbours say they see it, or them, at their place most days. There might be only one rabbit circulating between a half dozen properties or two or five or 10. I have no idea. I asked city hall. It could not answer. I was told there was no program in effect now and no one responsible
was available to speak to me about invasive wildlife. George Harvie has gone on to greater things. It is a fact that small critters (like rabbits) attract wildlife (like coyotes) that prey on them that could present a danger to small children or domestic pets. We are a community with a lot of wildlife and lots of open ground. Better to be safe than sorry, George. Ron Thompson

Letters Advocate might not be on your side
Editor: Re: Delta’s new Citizen Advocate now on your side at City Hall: The City of Delta recently announced the creation of a Citizen Advocate. This new role will be filled by Arvind Sharma, a senior staff member, with 20 years of experience at the City of Delta. Apparently, Sharma will be performing the duties of the Citizen Advocate in addition to his duties as the manager of administrative and customer services. According to the City of Delta, the Citizen Advocate is similar to an
internal ombudsperson position. The Citizen Advocate will act as a mediator for public complaints, will undertake an impartial review of staff decisions and will ensure the City of Delta is treating people fairly. While the City of Delta would like its residents to think the Citizen Advocate position is similar to an internal ombudsperson, it really may not be. How can the newly appointed Citizen Advocate act as a mediator for public complaints, undertake an impartial review of staff decisions
and ensure that all people in the City of Delta are treated fairly when he will be concurrently employed in a senior manager’s position at the City of Delta? How can he perform the required duties of two possibly conflicting positions without showing any personal or professional biases towards the City of Delta and its staff members after his long tenure within the city? Isn’t his employment as both the Citizen Advocate and manager of administrative and customer services a potential conflict of interest? A. Cameron

Port ‘disappointed’ after city opposes T2 Roberts Bank expansion would significantly increase economic benefits Delta already gets SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority remains committed to continuing dialogue with the City of Delta. That’s what the port authority says in a statement following Delta council’s decision last week to send a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and federal Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson asking the proposed Terminal 2 project at Roberts Bank not be approved. “While we are disappointed the mayor has not taken us up on our standing offer to meet with him to discuss the proposed RBT2 project, we remain committed to continuing dialogue with the city,” the port states. “We know, based on nine years of public consultation and engage-
ment and conversations at our Delta Community Office, that there is much positive feedback in the community and region for our work and this project.” The port says Delta benefits annually from $1 billion in economic activity, nearly $8 million in municipal property taxes and 4,800 well-paying jobs as a result of port activity, numbers that would significantly increase if a second three-berth container terminal were to proceed. “At a time when municipalities are looking for new revenue sources, the project would inject $20 million in local government tax revenue during the sixyear construction period and $34 million in local government tax revenue annually, not to mention the additional benefits that would come from thousands of on-terminal

jobs located at the City of Delta,” the port statement reads. “The independent review panel report affirmed the need for the project and, contrary to the city’s report, did review alternative means.” A report to Delta council notes the city had previously asked that the environmental assessment process be halted or a decision postponed until issues of concern
have been resolved. With the release of the review panel report, it is apparent that many of those issues have not been resolved, according to the staff report. The port authority, however, said it’s important to clarify the environmental assessment process as the federally appointed independent review panel heard evidence and earlier this year provided its report
demonstrate how the city’s concerns can be addressed. The port notes it has heard support from organizations like the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and many other stakeholders, as well as the governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan, which recognize the project’s national importance to the economy and its ability to protect the environment at Roberts Bank. “We are committed to ensuring that port operations, including expansions, can be done in a way that protects the local environment, while ensuring that Delta residents and all Canadians can benefit from the opportunities that come from increased trade with Asia.” The federal cabinet is expected to make a decision on the Terminal 2 proposal this fall.

to government. Now, the federal government is developing draft conditions based on the panel’s report, but the port says the City of Delta’s vote last week was taken before the draft conditions have been released for public comment, an important step in the process. The port notes it looks forward to an opportunity to review and discuss those conditions, and

SUBJECT: LAND USE CONTRACT DISCHARGE BYLAW NO. 7950 FOR 8025 108 STREET (File No. LU009034) PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that at the Regular Meeting to be held on MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 2020 at 4:00 P.M., in the Council Chamber, 4500 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta BC, Delta City Council will consider third reading of “Delta (Deo – LU009034) Land Use Contract Discharge Bylaw No. 7950, 2020” which relates to the property at 8025 108 Street, as shown outlined in bold and marked “Subject Property” on the map below. The purpose of this bylaw is to authorize Council to discharge Land Use Contract S.A. No. 2840 from the subject property to reveal the underlying Single Detached Residential 1 (RS1) Zone in order to allow the construction of a new single detached dwelling with an in-ground basement and a secondary suite.
Dozens of residents took to the streets of Delta last weekend for three simultaneous rallies against racism. Delta Stands Against Racism was created by North Delta resident Larry Johnston, who sparked the idea in a Facebook thread a few weeks ago. Rallies were held last Saturday at spots in Tsawwassen, Ladner and North Delta before groups broke up to march to key areas in all three communities. Brenda Moy was the rally organizer in Tsawwassen where she was joined by Ladner organizer Kate Henderson. “Kate and myself were keen on this idea and we
soon started conversations to plan and organize this ambitious event without even knowing each other, but knowing that we all had a common goal — to break the silence in Delta,” said Moy. “As we were marching on the downtown streets of Tsawwassen, car drivers that noticed our protest signs were honking in support. We also captured the attention of pedestrians and business owners while we chanted words of justice, peace, freedom and equality along the way.” Moy said one of the chants was especially created as a protest to the altercation Kiran Sidhu recently had with the wife of Delta’s police
chief. “We shouted, ‘Who’s beach? Our beach! Who’s rocks? Our rocks! Who’s town? Our town! Who’s country, Our country!’ The last line is in reference to the several cases of racist attacks in which people of colour like myself are told to go back to our country or to where we come from,” said Moy. Despite concerns and criticism online regarding the safety of the rallies, she said those attending were mindful of social distancing and wore masks throughout. “For the first simultaneous march of its kind in Delta, especially in Tsawwassen, it was a good start,” added Moy. “However, we have to be

The 1981 Academy Award-winning film Chariots of Fire portrayed British Olympic runner Eric Liddell and his refusal to participate in the 100-yard dash during the 1924 Olympics. As a devout Christian, he believed that competing on Sunday would be a violation of the Sabbath. I venture to say that many Christians these days would probably judge his position as being a bit strict and legalistic — that perhaps he could have interpreted the fourth commandment a bit more liberally. sports upheld as sacred, has the Sabbath been pushed to the margins? Jesus taught that “The Sabbath was made for humankind.” (Mark 2: 27a) God made the Sabbath so that we could find rest, replenishment and peace. God intended Sabbath as a time to be in communion with God and with each other. And God didn’t offer Sabbath as a suggestion, but rather commanded it. Most of us are aware that missing Sabbath, a sacred day of rest, is detrimental to our physical and emotional wellbeing. The fourth commandment reveals to us that it is also sinful.

Communist Party set to honour Stevens at anniversary event In celebration of 100 years of the Communist Party of Canada, a celebration is being held this Sunday in Ladner to honour the late Homer Stevens. Sponsored by the Lower Fraser Club of the Community Party of Canada, the event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stevens Mini Park in Port Guichon and will follow all COVID-19 health and safety protocols. “Homer Stevens was a prominent member of our party for most of his life and made significant contributions to the lives of working people in Delta and in British Columbia,” said Communist Party of Canada B.C. leader George Gidora. “Many people in Ladner know of Homer Stevens as his

family goes back generations in the community and have been a part of the fabric of the community up to the present day.” Stevens was one of the founders of the United Fisherman and Allied Workers Union, serving first as its secretarytreasurer and later as its president. “The work that him
and his sisters and brothers did united fishers and fishing industry shore workers into one union which bettered the lives of thousands in the industry which involved a preponderance of women workers in the processing plants,” said Gidora. “Homer not only contributed in this way, but he was also politically active in his
own community running as a candidate for the Communist Party in numerous federal and provincial elections. He also participated in Delta civic politics running for council and at least one time for mayor.” Gidora said together with his lifelong partner Grace, they raised four sons and a daughter in the Port Guichon area and never neglected the importance of family and community. Their children were active in community sports, schools and other activities and Grace and Homer were always there to support and participate. “In our opinion, the life and activities of Homer Stevens are an example of the founding principles of the Communist Party.”
Delta libraries readying to reopen next week
Fraser Valley Regional Library is preparing to welcome customers back inside all 25 branches beginning Aug. 4. While adjustments have been made to comply with health regulations, customers will be able to access much of the library’s public space and services, including browsing the collection, computer and printer access, item returns and more. “Over the past few months, while the physical library space was closed, FVRL staff has found innovative ways to continue fulfilling their mission to connect and engage with the community,” said FVRL board chair Gayle Martin. “FVRL’s reopening plan is an extension of
that innovation as they worked diligently to coordinate with each of the 15 member municipalities to reopen all of the locations and ensure that all customers have equal access. Staff has done an amazing job, and I thank them sincerely for their efforts and participation in planning.” To help contribute to a safe environment, customers over the age of three are strongly encouraged to wear a mask during their visit. For customers who prefer a more contactfree experience, an adapted FVRL Express service will continue. Customers can place holds on materials online and then pick them up at the door. Tsawwassen group aims to restore harmony
Parents start Tsawwassen Harmony Initiative Society to create a better community for kids IAN JACQUES

Restoring harmony through arts, culture and community is the mandate behind the Tsawwassen Harmony Initiative Society (THIS). Warren Dean Flandez and Geeta Schallig started the society a few months ago, bringing on fellow residents NaRai Dawn Sherritt and Michael Soltis shortly thereafter. “We are still building the team, with a few others joining our board, but essentially, we are four parents (NaRai is a parent to be in a few weeks) who wanted to work towards a better community for our children,” said Flandez. “That is our driving force. Obviously, the talk right now is around anti-
racism, but THIS is about inclusiveness for everyone in our community, whatever that may be. And as we all evolve, different topics will be covered and addressed with THIS initiatives as well.” With a common goal of bringing people together through arts and culture, THIS is dedicated to providing meaningful experiences that encourage community engagement and immersive learning opportunities. “Our mandate is to restore harmony through arts, culture and community by placing a positive value on what makes each of us unique, and I think that is really important, but also by celebrating our commonalities,” Flandez added. “Our commonalities is that we are human — we all have families, we all

for now, but THIS board members hope to schedule it for next summer. “The idea of a festival is something that I have been toying around for a number of years,” said Flandez. “Music, food, arts, dance, fashion. It really is a community festival and it’s not about being culturally diverse, it’s just about being diverse in general. We want to ensure that everyone in the community is welcome.” In the meantime, THIS
is working on a decal that can be displayed in businesses throughout the community that shows it is a safe and inclusive space. “We are not reinventing the wheel with this sticker campaign, but there needs to be a way for people who are newcomers or people who feel marginalized that they are welcome in certain areas,” he said. “Something as simple as this can go a long way. I’m a business owner
in Tsawwassen and I’ve spoken to many who say that they feel more welcome in chain stores than in some of our smaller stores, so that really surprised me that people in South Delta are experiencing this.” THIS will also hold its first community forum, THIS is Your Voice, on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 5 p.m. Moderated by awardwinning radio and television broadcaster Simi Sara, this roundtablestyle discussion will bring together select community representatives comprised of concerned citizens, local leaders and government officials. The aim is to provide a safe, neutral platform to encourage proactive conversation about antiracism in Delta. The event will be broadcast live from Harris Barn on the THIS Facebook page. A local photographer is doing her part to show some Ladner pride. With Pride events cancelled throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond due to COVID19, Emily reached out to the LGBTQ community through the Ladner’s Landing Facebook group earlier this month with an idea for a Pridethemed photo shoot. “I wasn’t sure if anyone would take me up on my offer when I put it out there, but I was really happy with the response and the results,” says Emily, who has packaged the photos and accompanying stories in an online project she’s dubbed “Ladner is Proud.” It can be found at: https://ladnerpride.myp-
ixieset.com/. Emily says the impetus for the project was to give members of Ladner’s LGBTQ community a voice, but it also serves to raise awareness among the wider population. She took free portraits of 10 individuals, couples and families, many at the rainbow bench out front of the Ladner Leisure Centre. She says it was a diverse group, and included a couple of people she terms as allies. “This project was created to highlight the queer community in Ladner and their diversity,” she states on her website. “Our hope is that this will show those who are closeted, feeling alone or just proud to be LGBTQ+ that in Ladner, you are accepted.” The 26-year-old amateur photographer
believes the community is generally accepting but, like many other places, still has some learning to do. “I want to help people understand,” she says. “It can be hard for people to come out, but if they get support when they do, it makes all the difference. That support means so much.” In her post on Ladner’s Landing, Emily says we all have a duty to understand and protect our neighbours, so she’s hoping that by sharing photos and stories of members of Ladner’s LGBTQ community she can further that awareness. “There are people that feel they can’t come out because they might not get that support, so it would be great if we could change that,” she says.

Trans woman leads district’s LGBTQ efforts Trevana Spilchen helping Delta teachers improve curriculum, better understand issues

That was really important for me. So when we have that in policy, and I do the work
I came out as a trans woman in the district in 2016 and one of the only reasons I came out is because of the policy, a policy that says the district chooses to support people who choose to transition. That was really important for me. TREVANA SPILCHEN
Spilchen is now the district’s SOGI coordinator, helping teachers improve the curriculum and gain a better understanding of how to approach LGBTQ issues. “There’s always going to be work to do. I think it’s the same with misogyny or sexism or racism or anything. I feel like we in Delta are towards the top of the pack as far as districts go. I feel like the teachers really want to do the right thing but it takes time, doing the small things and talk to
of going out to schools and telling people this policy exists and the expectations of the district, it makes people feel a whole lot safer.” Spilchen explained part of the coordinator’s responsibilities involves working with a district committee and helping teachers and students increase awareness, as well as working with teachers directly on curriculum. That work includes which books should be used and how to use them, as well as
annual workshops on such topics as how to use appropriate language. There’s also a curriculum team with Spilchen involved with youth/ adult novels that are LGBTQ-focused, choosing the right materials and developing lesson plans on those materials. “Teachers really want to be inclusive and they want to bring in different stories about marginalized groups, whether that’s people of colour or different ethnicities or, in this case, LGBTQ people, but they may not know how or what books. It’s a lot of work for teachers to be reading a lot of different books to find one that works. So we provide books for them and resources.” Spilchen, who also supports high school gender sexuality alliance committees, noted they also hold events, including a successful districtwide Pride dance for students last year. COVID-19 forced the cancellation of this year’s dance but Spilchen said the plan is to make it a regular event in the coming years. The district states it has been at the forefront in creating language in its policies that ensures those who self-identify as a member of a sexual minority feel safe, included and acknowledged.

Const. Lee Chapman says one of the keys is always being open to learning from others Delta police Const. Lee Chapman is familiar to many in South Delta, but in addition to his duties in the Tsawwassen Community Police Office, he has an important role as the liaison member of the Delta Pride Society. He’s also an ally member of a new organization called Out on Patrol, for Metro Vancouver police, and is the co-chair of the BC Law Enforcement Diversity Network. Chapman describes his role as part education, part engagement and always being open to learning from others. For example, as society evolves, Chapman says he’s struck by the importance of language. “I recently sent a text to some of the members of the Delta Pride Society, and I started by saying, ‘Hey guys.’ I real-
ized my mistake right away, so I sent a follow up text saying, ‘Sorry, I made a mistake,’” he explains. “One of the things I’ve learned in my work with the (Delta) Pride Society is that it’s OK to ask what someone’s pronouns are. It’s OK to make mistakes. What matters is when someone acknowledges it. That’s what I try to pass along to other police officers.” Changes in language, and giving police officers a way to reflect those changes, are now incorporated into the PRIME database that police use all across B.C. In the past police had to choose between male, female and gender unknown for options to describe a person within PRIME, whether that person was a witness,

suspect, etc., but since last August there is a new category called Gender Diverse.
Looking for ways to engage with diverse groups is another important aspect of commu-
nity policing. Chapman enjoys his role in building bridges in the community.
During Pride Month in June, he brought members of the Delta Pride Society into DPD headquarters where they sat down with Chief Neil Dubord and others to create hand-made rainbow pins for the whole department to wear, including officers and civilians. The Delta Police Department is currently doing research to determine the best way for a department of its size to reach out to those who are marginalized or subject to discrimination by others. One of the options being considered is whether the department should have a separate diversity unit or diversity officer. The department is also considering what types of training might be able to be incorporated.

Celebrating Pride has become a special event for the City of Delta. Best symbolized by the firstever raising of the Pride flag at city hall in June 2019, the city has taken strides in recent years to support and celebrate the Pride community in Delta. The city’s efforts have included the installation of diversity and inclusion rainbow benches at key locations throughout the community, support of the Delta Pride Society’s Pride Picnic, and the now annual tradition of raising the Pride flag at city hall for the second time in June 2020. “As a city and a community we have made great steps in recent years to celebrate Pride and support the LGBTQ+ community in Delta,”

There’s a lot of work that still needs to be done. That’s what Sher Vancouver founder Alex Sangha says when it comes to the much talked about topic of inclusion and how Delta and its institutions can be doing more. Sher Vancouver is a non-profit group founded in North Delta to support LGBTQ South Asians and their friends and families, one of the first and, still, few of its kind in the country. The City of Delta has begun flying the Pride flag and installed rainbow benches, while other ideas are also being explored. Sangha, however, said a clear strategic plan to support LGBTQ
people needs to be the next step when it comes to city hall, police and the school district. “I think there’s a lot of work that could be done at the school district, Delta police and the City of Delta,” said the longtime social worker. “For example, it would be wonderful if the school district hired an LGBTQ liaison or consultant, someone in a districtwide position where any queer kid can turn for help. This person can go to the schools to talk about racism or bullying, homophobia and transphobia. This person could also be a resource for teachers about films or movies that are ageappropriate that teachers could get into the curriculum and specialist advice to bring these types of issues to the

few months but a lot of these people are not the experts of the situation that they’re dealing with. I find it a bit of a cop out and it can be very ineffective and very bureaucratic. It would
be better to hire specialized staff who are trained and are experts in the area, to have a budget and program. Also, the leadership at city hall and the school district and Delta police needs to change to have more visible minorities, people of colour… I really think there’s no excuse for a government which gets taxpayers’ dollars to be under representative of the people they
serve.” Sangha said his group has volunteers providing peer support and operates on a relatively small budget compared to the growing demand.
Offering programs that are fully funded would go a long way to helping those in crisis, he said, and they’ve reached out to the community for ongoing support. “Really, the levels of government need to come to the table and provide some funding. We’ve made so many grant applications but it’s been difficult. Once we get our charitable status, I’m hoping that will make it easier,” he said. Sher Vancouver recently announced its release of Queersome Desi Resources, a specially curated list of queer South Asian resources from around the world, a list that includes reading materials, podcasts, movies and creative projects. Study finds seniors coping better in pandemic ALAN CAMPBELL
Ri c h m o n d N e w s
Adults in their senior years have coped better emotionally with the pandemic, compared to people in the lower age brackets, according to research released recently from UBC. The research in the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences states that adults aged 60 and up have done much better than younger adults (18–39) and middle-aged adults (40–59). Based on daily diary data collected between mid-March and midApril of this year, the researchers found that older adults experienced greater emotional well-being and felt less stressed and threatened by the pandemic.
“Our findings provide new evidence that older adults are emotionally resilient despite public discourse often portraying their vulnerability. We also found that younger adults are at greater risk for loneliness and psychological distress during the pandemic,” said Patrick Klaiber, the study’s lead author and a graduate student in the UBC department of psychology. For the study, researchers analyzed data from 776 participants aged 18 to 91 in Canada and the U.S. who completed daily surveys for one week about their stressors, positive events and their emotional well-being during the first several weeks of the pandemic. The time period was
Researchers at UBC have found that adults aged 60 and up have done much better emotionally than younger adults (18–39) and middle-aged adults (40–59) during the COVID-19 pandemic. selected as it was likely to be the period of greatest disruption and uncertainty as local, provincial and state governments began issuing stay-athome orders.
Klaiber said the difference in reported stress levels may be a result of age-related stressors and how well the different age groups respond to stress. “Younger and middle-
aged adults are faced with family- and workrelated challenges, such as working from home, homeschooling children and unemployment,” added Klaiber. “They are also more likely to experience different types of ongoing non-pandemic stressors than older adults, such as interpersonal conflicts. “While older adults are faced with stressors such as higher rates of disease contraction, severe complications and mortality from COVID-19, they also possess more coping skills to deal with stress as they are older and wiser.” The study also reveals older and middle-aged adults experienced more daily positive events — such as remote positive social interactions — in
75 per cent of their daily surveys, which helped increase positive emotions compared to younger adults. “While positive events led to increases in positive emotions for all three age groups, younger adults had the least positive events but also benefited the most from them,” said Klaiber. “This is a good reminder for younger adults to create more opportunities for physically-distanced or remote positive experiences as a way of mitigating distress during the pandemic,” he added. The researchers hope their findings would help inform the development of programs and strategies to bolster mental health for adults of all age groups.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
HRT might be the answer for hot flashes of menopause
Menopause is a natural occurrence that takes place in a woman’s life around the age of 50. Menopause is marked by bodily changes that represent the end of a woman’s ability to bear children. Like puberty, menstrual periods and pregnancy, menopause involves fluctuations in hormones, notably estrogen and progesterone. These fluctuations can cause symptoms that may make women uncomfortable, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, and difficulty sleeping. As a result, many women discuss options that can make them feel more comfortable. Hormone replacement therapy may be a consideration.
Estrogen levels fall during menopause. The online medical resource WebMD says that hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, involves taking small doses of estrogen alone or estrogen combined with progestin, the synthetic form of progesterone. Women who have undergone a hysterectomy or the surgical removal of their ovaries may only take estrogen, while a woman who still has her uterus typically takes the combination HRT. Many women find that HRT can relieve most of the troubling symptoms of menopause and help them feel more comfortable. In addition, HRT has been proven to prevent bone loss and reduce
fracture in postmenopausal women, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are different types of HRT. HRT may involve taking a pill or applying a patch, gel or vaginal cream. HRT also may include a slowreleasing suppository or a vaginal ring. The delivery method will depend on the symptoms to minimize the amount of medication taken. While there are many benefits to HRT, there are some risks associated with the therapy. These risks depend on the dose, length of time taking HRT and individual health risks. The Mayo Clinic says if HRT is started before 60 or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits appear to outweigh the risks.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
You can still enjoy road trips by taking precautions Road trip season has arrived, and it promises to be unlike any other in recent memory. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 has changed how people go about their daily lives, including how they travel. Travel may involve some risk until a treatment or vaccine for COVID-19 is developed, but day trips by car are among the safer ways to
get out and about and experience the majesty of nature this summer and fall. • Plan for fewer pit stops. The fewer stops drivers make on their trips, the lower their risk of being exposed to the COVID-19 virus. In lieu of dining out during your trip, pack your lunch at home and take it with you. In addition, fill up your car before embarking on your trip so you
don’t have to visit the filling station while on the road. Bring enough water and snacks so you can stay hydrated and don’t become hungry while out and about. • Avoid densely populated areas if you intend to get out of your vehicle. If you intend to get out of your vehicle during a road trip, avoid visiting areas that tend to draw large crowds. Popular lookout points may pro-

World of Dance title still alive for local teen
Tsawwassen’s Emily Sun is captain of GRVMNT hip hop crew that’s qualified for semifinals IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Tsawwassen hip hop dancer Emily Sun is off to the semifinals of the World of Dance. The 17-year-old is the captain of GRVMNT, which earned its spot in the next round of the competition by beating out The Young Cast, a dance crew from Quebec, in the duels round on the July 21 episode of the hit NBC series. After an intense battle in the callbacks stage, an episode that aired on June 23, GRVMNT was all business last Tuesday night in a battle with The Young Cast that judge Jennifer Lopez said was one of the fiercest and closest of the competition to date. “Both of you guys stepped it up to the next
level at the callbacks so I’m not surprised that you are here,” Lopez said. “I didn’t know you two groups had this in you. It was world-class.” GRVMNT’s performance was choreographed to Eminem’s hit Godzilla, a piece Sun said is one of the dance crew’s favourites. “The Young Cast and our team have been competing against each other for quite a few years, so when we first saw each other walk through the door, we were shocked, scared. They had really intimidating faces and we were nervous,” said Sun in an interview with the Optimist. “We all want each other to succeed, but because we were competing against each other, you have to fight for that spot.”

GRVMNT earned its spot in the next round of the competition by beating out The Young Cast last week on the World of Dance.
Sun said from the callback round to the duel round, GRVMNT worked non-stop to perfect its routine to take the performance to an even higher level. “One of the comments the judges gave us during the callbacks was to focus whoever is in the
front, so going into the duels we focused on that and especially going into the duels, we love the Eminem song, we love to dance to that and we knew we had to leave everything on the floor and give everything we had on the stage,” she said. “We know what
Young Cast has, their ability, their skill, so we had to show what we do best.” Lopez called GRVMNT’s performance “excellent,” saying the routine might be the record for the most moves in a minute and a half.
Judge Derek Hough said “you guys came here ready to play,” while judge Ne-Yo said it was high quality and just a “solid” performance. When the judges’ choice was revealed, Hough voted for The Young Cast and Lopez voted for GRVMNT, leaving the deciding vote to Ne-Yo. “We were so happy to hear the results,” said Sun. “It was suspenseful. Everyone was shaking and clinching their hands and then to hear Ne-Yo say GRVMNT, it was amazing for us. It’s unbelievable that we get to move onto the next round.” GRVMNT will be back on the program on Aug. 4 when the semifinal rounds begin. World of Dance airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Helen, June and Lenore; her dear son, Geoffrey; son−in−law, Gary; step−daughter, Margaret; and her beloved husbands, Gilbert Smith (1993) and Ernie Burnett (2004). Also mourning her loss is her extended family, Maggie, Amanda, Robert (Erin), Matt (Karen), Kaitlin, and Sarah; friends, Heather, Cynthia, and Sandy; and her church family at All Saints, Ladner. Marion had nearly a century of living with determination and enthusiasm, with grace and style, and faith and love. She loved children, beautiful things, parties, travelling, golf, football, spaniels, and her garden. Most of all she loved music and sang in her church choir from the 1930s to her passing. Marion worked at Eatons in Winnipeg as a young woman and later, in Vancouver, she worked at Birks Oakridge for 25 years. A COVID influenced celebration of her life will be held later in August. Contributions can be made to All Saints Anglican Church in her memory.

JOHNSON, Kenneth Lyle February 28, 1932 - July 9, 2020 Ken passed peacefully at his home in South Surrey on the morning of July 9th due to complications associated with his heart and pneumonia. Ken’s wife of 64 years, Sharon, pre-deceased Ken in September 2019.
Ken is survived by a large and caring family; including his sister, Naomi, his four sons and their wives; Lyle (Cheryl), Mark (Rosina), Craig (Anne), Glenn (Candice), eight grandchildren and their spouses; Jeff (Anna), Erin (Darcy), Steve, Paul (Gaia), Brittany, Matthew, Dawson, Reese and recently arrived great grandson, Thomas. Ken was born in High Prairie, Alberta, then moved to the British Columbia coast when he was just a child with his parents, Arthur and Irma, as well as brothers, Art and Wally, and sister, Naomi. Ken worked at a variety of jobs before beginning a career with Black Ball Ferries in Horseshoe Bay, in the mid 50’s, about the same time he met his wife to be, Sharon. Black Ball became BC Ferries and Ken was promoted to Terminal Manager and ran things there for many years before retiring in 1989. Sharon and Ken raised their four boys in Horseshoe Bay, and spent their retirement years in Tsawwassen and South Surrey. They wintered in the Palm Springs area for many years later in life, where they enjoyed sunshine, golf, cards, the odd glass of wine and visiting with friends and relatives. He enjoyed a variety of music, but especially loved Elton John, Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash. Ken volunteered as a soccer coach in West Vancouver and had success with most all the teams he coached, including a number of juvenile teams and the West Van Trollers. His other great passion was owning thoroughbred race horses. He had many good runners over the years, some of his favourites were; A Lock, My Special Angel, Zapped in Time, Too Much Johnson, Brother Duster and Sword Fighter. When he went to watch the horses run at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, he would ‘hold court’ in the bar, visiting and telling jokes with other horse people, including trainers, jockeys, owners and other racetrack characters. Speaking of character, Ken had it in spades. When he was given the opportunity to speak at special events he made the most of it, leaving folks in tears from laughter, despite not always staying on topic. His gift was his delivery, so much so, that the content often didn’t really matter. People found him entertaining and memorable. Ken loved an audience. And by all accounts, they loved him right back. He will be missed. Due to pandemic restrictions, a small, immediate family only celebration of life will be held. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to New Stride Thoroughbred Adoption Society.
McInnes − Emily Janet (nee Campbell) passed away peacefully on March 19, 2020. Born in Halifax, NS, on August 8, 1932, her family moved to Vancouver in 1939. She met Douglas McInnes while attending UBC, and they married in 1957. After living and working in Oliver for a few years, they returned to Vancouver, where she devoted her life to raising her children and looking after her family. Exceptionally kind, with a wonderful sense of humour, she always saw the best in everyone. Predeceased by Douglas in 2017, she will be deeply missed by her daughter, Alison (Kerry) and son, Scott (Benita); beloved grandchildren, Liam, Evan, and Taya; brothers, Gordon (Joyce) and Duncan; and many nieces and nephews. Heartfelt thanks to the staff of both the Delta Hospital and the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner for the outstanding care she received during her stay. A Celebration of Emily’s life will be held at a later date.
PORTER, Kenneth Lawrence May 8, 1930 - July 23, 2020 Kenneth Lawrence Porter, 90, of Ladner and formally Richmond, BC, passed away Thursday July 23, 2020. He also enjoyed passing the time by watching soccer or golf. He is survived by his beloved wife Lil, of whom he was married to for 53 years this September. Loving father to Maureen (Jim), and Donna (Ryan), he will be missed by granddaughters Sarah and Karleigh, as well as dear siblings Bill, John, Jackie, Carol, Margie, and Bess. He is preceded in death by mother Juliene; father Charles; brothers Bob and Charles; and sisters Loretta and Bernadette.
