Ladner soldier remembered, honoured

Family lays wreath in memory of solider marking 75th anniversary of V-J Day MARK BOOTH

Last Saturday’s 75th anniversary of V-J Day was extra special to Pearl MacPherson and her family. The 90-year-old Ladner resident visited the Memorial Park cenotaph where she placed a wreath in the memory of her late husband Don, a Japanese war prisoner for 40 months. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladner branch were also on hand for the ceremony. MacPherson was among 2,000 Canadian soldiers involved in the Battle of Hong Kong. It lasted for 17 days before the Allied troops were captured on Christmas Day in 1941. MacPherson wasn’t a free man until Japan’s official Second World War surrender after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug. 15, 1945. Even then, the prisoners waited for another month to be rescued by train after food and medical supplies were dropped by parachute from American war planes. “Winston Churchill told Prime Minster Mackenzie King at the time if they sent troops to Hong Kong they would be captured or killed. They knew they would be unable to rescue them,” Pearl recalled. “Of the 2,000 Canadians that went 1,500 of them came home with 250 dying in the initial battle and the other in 250 prison camps. “My husband was from a small farming community in Manitoba. them went and he was the only one who came back. His brother in-law was killed right beside him in a trench from shrapnel.” MacPherson was held at war camps in Hong Kong and Japan. He worked much of the time slaving in a nickel mine and lived off mainly a diet of only rice. The lack of proper nutrition resulted in the loss of much of his sight and a lasting heart condition. When he finally came home at the age of 25, his work opportunities were limited. He eventually found his way to Vancouver and it was a trip back to Manitoba for a family wedding where he met his future wife. Pearl moved to the West Coast three months later. Today there about seven surviving members of the Hong Kong Veterans Commemorative Association. MacPherson passed away back in 2005 at 85 but, like others, his family is continuing the organization’s mandate of educating others on the role of Canadian soldiers in the Battle of Hong Kong and the effects of the internment on both the soldiers and their families. COVID-19 scrapped a V-J Day celebration in Ottawa. Instead families were asked to recognize the day in their own special way. MacPherson’s daughter recently wrote a letter to Premier John Horgan to remind him it’s Victory Over Japan Day that actually signifies the end of the Second World War, not Victory in Europe Day that celebrated its 75th anniversary back in May.

Battle for Hospice Society back in court SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The battle for control of the Delta Hospice Society is going to drag on for a while. A hearing was held at the B.C. Court of Appeal Monday, but was adjourned to allow B.C.’s attorney general enough time to prepare a position on a charter of rights argument by the current board. The board filed the appeal to overturn an earlier petition to the B.C. Supreme Court which successfully halted a planned meeting by the board to have the society’s constitution amended to be Christian-based. The petition by Chris Pettypiece, Sharon Farrish and former board president Jim Levin followed the current DHS leadership rejecting many society membership applications by Delta residents opposed to the board’s actions. Accused of stacking the membership to impose their religious viewpoint, including signing up many non-Deltans, the current board is alleged to have breached the Societies Act by blocking people from joining. The board and its president Angelina Ireland are opposed to providing the legal procedure medical assistance in dying (MAiD) at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner. The current board reversed a decision by the previous board to allow MAiD. In a news release following Monday’s session, Pettypiece said he, Levin and Farrish are staying the course, adding, “We believe Delta Hospice and its services should be available to all that require hospice care, regardless of their end-of-life choices. We are committed to ensuring a membership that reflects the wishes of the entire

community and we’ll use this delay to strengthen our representation of them as we head into the fall and the BC Court’s decision.” Pettypiece also said, “The most frequent question our group is asked is about when applicants can expect to have their memberships approved. The Courts will give direction to the Society as to when and how they must add the applicants so I urge everyone to apply now as the Courts will set that deadline at their discretion.” They are part of a new group, Take Back Delta Hospice, which says it is composed of DHS members, supporters and advocates who believe the society should be accountable to its members and the community it serves. In a news release also issued Monday, Ireland stated, “We feel like the Court heard us today. We welcome the chance to argue on constitutional grounds why it’s wrong for the courts to force us to let a hostile group take over the Society, change its foundational purposes, and seize the assets built up for over 30 years.” The news release also notes lawyers for the DHS argued that B.C. Supreme Court’s Madame Justice Sheila Fitzpatrick erred in fact and law when she ordered on June 12th that the society must accept 310 applicants who had been denied membership. The board contends she mistakenly treated the membership process as if the DHS was a public institution rather than a private association. Even if the B.C.’s Societies Act permits such an order, it then violates charter rights of free association and freedom of conscience, the news release noted, adding appeal court justices agreed to hear both aspects of

A successful petition to the B.C. Supreme Court filed by Christopher Pettypiece (left) Sharon Farrish and Jim Levin blocked a special meeting organized by the Delta Hospice Society board. The board is appealing that ruling. the DHS legal claim. Ireland stressed the membership applications rejected were part of an attempted takeover of the society through “a public and coordinated campaign to infiltrate the Delta Hospice Society and overwhelm the existing membership with those who do not share our constitution. Their whole purpose was to reverse our policy on euthanasia.” Ireland emphasized that the implications of allowing Justice Fitzpatrick’s judgement to stand go well beyond the MAiD issue, going to the heart of private associations in Canada remaining free to choose members who support their organizational values, goals and regulations. Ireland also said such “hostile tactics” are particularly perilous when it comes to MAiD because

they would “let advocates of euthanasia and assisted suicide embed the propaganda that Canadians have a right to MAiD wherever and whenever they want.” By next February the charter argument and battle for control of the society could be a moot point, though. Fraser Health has mandated that non-faith based hospices offer MAiD to those who ask for it, putting Delta Hospice on a collision course with the health authority and the province, which announced earlier this year the society would lose its funding by Feb. 25, 2021. Health Minister Adrian Dix said no matter who controls the society by then, it would also not be permitted to provide hospice palliative care by that date.

Uncertainty remains as back to school looms SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Despite new guidelines, and a great deal of uncertainty, concern remains as the new school year is just weeks away. Education Minister Rob Fleming last week announced students’ return to the classroom will be pushed to Sept. 10 to give teachers a chance to prepare for the latest COVID-19 guidelines. The plan to have most students return to the classroom full-time remains unchanged, even though many B.C. parents have conveyed concerns and are also calling on the return to be voluntary. Delta District Parent Advisory Council chair Joe Muego told the Optimist that they’ve been gathering feedback including suggestions from parents that were submitted to the district. He said the concerns include families not wanting to expand their so-called “bubbles” to include their children’s school cohorts, saying they’re worried for the safety of older people living in multi-generational homes. Another concern is that children, including those who live out of boundary or outside the district, could end up losing their placement in Delta schools

if parents choose not to have them attend in-class sessions. “Everything is so fluid and everything is so in-the-moment. It’s a challenge for the district’s staff. This is new territory for everyone and there’s no one to look to for precedent,” said Muego. He added parents have suggested more education choices including hybrid learning or decreased class sizes. “It’s reinforcing people’s willingness to embrace alternate means of keeping their children safe, but also continuing with their socialization,” he said. “It is challenging for the district to negotiate this. They have to answer to the Ministry of Education, they have to answer to the Ministry of Health and they have to answer to parents.” In an open letter to parents last week, Delta district superintendent Doug Sheppard noted the district appreciates the range of feelings and concerns of families. One of the important parts of the process is that the district ensures adequate consultation with partner groups including representatives from DPAC and with the unions. The district is required to submit Delta’s plan to the Ministry of Education for approval before Aug. 21. As soon as Delta’s plan is approved,

Sheppard explained, they will provide parents with as much of a comprehensive overview as possible on, or before, Aug. 26. Shortly afterward, parents can expect to receive further details from their child’s school. “On a final note, I also feel it is important to emphasize that although we are planning to start in Stage 2, we need families to understand that these plans can change very quickly if there is a spike in community transmission and an increase in daily numbers of positive tests for COVID-19. The Provincial Health Officer will advise the Ministry of Education of the stage school districts will operate in. We will continue to do our best to keep you informed and up-to-date on any changes as they are announced,” stated Sheppard. On Monday afternoon, the ministry released its updated health and safety guidelines, which includes masks to be required for staff, middle and secondary students in high traffic areas. That includes buses and common areas such as hallways, or anytime outside of their learning group whenever physical distancing cannot be maintained. One of the key components of the plan is the establishment of learning groups.

Even when wearing a mask, staff and students will still be required to maintain physical distance from people outside of their learning group. B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Teri Mooring has also conveyed concerns including whether families will be able to have a hybrid schooling model option, especially for children who are medically compromised or have a family member who’s medically compromised. Meanwhile, a collection of parents have started a petition to keep the return to B.C. schools on optional or voluntary basis, saying the government should provide distance-learning options without having to withdraw the child from their current school During question period in the legislature last week, Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson asked why bricksand-mortar schools can’t be used as bases for distance learning. Premier John Horgan responded they’ve been working with school boards on a reopening plan and that “everyone” wants to see in-class learning. The premier also noted the model that ends up working could include a hybrid model, but Wilkinson countered by asking why there can’t be parental choice.

DPD urges vigilance against scam artists IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Now more than ever, Delta police are reminding residents to be extra vigilant against potential scam artists. The COVID-19 pandemic has afforded more opportunities for scammers to target unsuspecting victims. In recent weeks, a phone scam involving contact tracing has been making the rounds on Facebook. Even though Delta has yet to have a reported case of this particular scam, Const. Dustin Classen of the Delta Police Economic & Technical Crime Unit said it doesn’t mean that it is not present in the community. “This is just another opportunity for scammers,” he said. “The legitimate scenario with contact tracing is that you receive a call from

public health saying you have been in contact with someone who have been diagnosed with COVID19 and how do we differentiate those legitimate calls with these calls that are not? I think really the hallmarks are if they start asking for money and in this case, asking for money to pay for a test kit, which obviously is not the case in B.C.” He said in this instance, victims have been asked to also provide a social insurance number as well as their immigration status – two pieces of information that point to a clear sign of a scam. “Maybe it’s real, maybe it’s not, if you are unsure, call your health authority and in our case it is Fraser Health,” he said. After the Optimist made an inquiry to DPD about COVID-19-related scams, Classen said a search of files in the past few months indicated

five reported cases in Delta of identity theft related to CERB. But according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, there have been more than 700 reports of this fraud since the start of the pandemic with more than 100 in the past week alone. “We know the fraudsters are hitting that a lot, but how they are getting into the accounts remains to be seen,” he said. So how to you defend yourself from being attacked? Classen said always report the suspected fraud attempt to the Canadian Revenue Agency as well as local police. “Fraud is typically under reported. In fact, five per cent of frauds are actually reported to us,” he said. “We can’t help you or look into it if we don’t know that it is happening, so if there is one thing that I can stress to your readers is the

importance of reporting these incidents to Delta police.” He said other important steps include reporting the frauds with your financial institutions and keeping regular contact and reviews of all of your bank accounts. Always shred your personal doc-

New signage to further promote Delta farming IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The City of Delta has approved a new signage program to help promote soil-based farming on Delta-owned lands. According to a Delta staff report, the community has a longstanding and productive farming community and agriculture represents an important economic and food security component within Delta and the region. Council actively supports the farming community and opportunities for soil-based farming. Signage wording would communicate that the lands are “Delta Farms” proudly owned by the City of Delta and also indicate the name of the farmer. Funding for the program is $39,000 or

approximately $4,333 per sign based on nine signs. All of council approved the new program with the exception of Coun. Lois Jackson. Jackson said she didn’t see a need for the new signs. “Nobody knows any more than the people who live here that Delta is a farming community,” said Jackson. “I’m just not sure that the taxpayer will appreciate we are spending $40,000 on signs to blow our own horn. I have been supporting farming since I was elected in 1972, but I just don’t think this expenditure is needed.” Coun. Alicia Guichon said while she appreciated Jackson’s view on the expenditure and the fact the public needs to know where their tax dollars are being spent, it is

also very informative for residents to know who owns which land and who farms it. “This is council has been very supportive of farming and education within our community. The community is growing and we have lots of new people moving to the community,” said Guichon. “People have asked me what is growing in Delta and these signs are key to that. This is positive just to let people know who farms it, what is growing there, who owns it.” Kruger said if you did a poll in the community, very few people would be aware to the extent Delta is involved in agriculture with city-owned lands. “It’s a pretty cool story that not a lot of municipalities in our region can boast about,” he said.

Editor’s Note

Y

IAN JACQUES

ou have some big shoes to fill. I’ve heard that a lot the past few days as word of editor Ted Murphy’s departure started to make its way around the community. Believe me, it’s a sentiment that I could not agree more with. How do you sum up a 30-year-plus career at the same newspaper in a few, short paragraphs? The answer is you can’t. But I can say this, thank-you Ted. Thank-you for your commitment to the craft. Thank-you for your commitment to this community. Thank-you for the call in the summer of 2015 offering me a chance to join this award-winning publication. Thank-you for being a friend and a mentor. My hope and goals as we move forward here at the Optimist, is to continue to strong and lasting legacy that Ted, the editorial team, and sales department has carved out at the Optimist. My commitment to this community is to continue to bring to you on a daily basis online and weekly in print, the stories that matter to you – that matter to Delta. Whether that is the latest crime stats from the Delta police, a development decision from city council or who won last night’s Ice Hawks’ game, myself and the editorial team will be working hard to tell your stories. This is what community journalism is all about. The Optimist has and will continue to reflect the community in which it proudly serves. Community journalism matters and in these times of uncertainty, it matters even more. So in the days, weeks and months to come, I look forward to meeting more of you – socially distanced of course, hearing your stories, hearing your concerns as we strive to make this community and this paper even better. Let the new era begin.

or the record I hate wearing a mask. I own a few, both cloth and paper. I carry one in my purse and I have happily obliged using one when asked. I’ve worn them on public transit, in salons, and in health care settings, but I hate them. Masks do not restrict my breathing, but they are claustrophobic, hot, sweaty and stinky. My long hair gets caught in the elastic, and I am constantly fiddling with them. It’s hard to have a conversation with a mask on, try talking to someone over the phone who is wearing a mask, it’s impossible. Masks give me the creeps. They conjure up images of violence. Masks have been a symbol of oppression, disguise and protest since antiquity, they are equally impactful today. I personally know a woman who is triggered by masks after she was sexually abused for years by a convicted predator. Smokers have had to adapt to wearing masks. There’s the lower the mask, inhale, exhale, then put the mask on again technique and the inventive

DIY smokers flap. Attention all smokers, a pandemic seems like a good time to try to quit smoking. Back to school shopping lists will include masks because when social distancing is not possible in schools, masks are mandatory. Teachers and staff who have to regulate mask wearing will be challenged and I am highly sympathetic to their new responsibilities. Don’t get me wrong I think it is commendable that so many people are wearing masks and I know it gives people a sense of comfort and security. Social distancing and hand washing has proven to

be more effective than masks to ward off COVID-19 but it’s not always possible. I choose to conscientiously practise social distancing at all times and wear a mask only when I am asked too. I’ve felt the criticism from mask wearers when they see me without a mask. If the eyes are the windows to the soul I’ve seen a lot of souls scoff at me, especially at Thriftys. B.C.’s Public Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has been under increasing pressure to make masks mandatory in our province, yet she refuses. I support her view as there are many people who for mental or physical health reasons cannot wear them. It should be a choice. Winter is coming so stock up on paper masks and invest in some cloth masks, preferably sold by charities, because Health Minister Adrian Dix predicts this pandemic is going be with us into 2022. Yikes. Ingrid Abbott is a freelance writer and broadcaster who will never wear a mask in a bank in case she is confused for a bank robber.

Get tough on partiers Editor: Re: partying during the pandemic So, if the leaders in the Provincial Government think that “education” during this pandemic is working right now, when mostly young people are apparently still “partying during the pandemic,” then perhaps they should think again and consider the next step – enforcement. If they, as educated people, are not sure what to do next, then here are a few suggestions: Round up the organizers of the “spontaneous” Granville Street parties, and the Third Beach drum circles, and then fine them heavily. Something that will actually hurt, and may be somewhat life-changing: let’s start at $10,000. That’s a good solid number.

Then, round up everyone else who attended these parties, and take them to some large, empty buildings. I’m sure that those won’t be too hard to find right now. Place them all in separate rooms, apart from their family members and friends. Next, and this is an important step: no personal devices, no access to WIFI, no cable TV or streaming, no drugs or alcohol, and no Skip The Dishes, UberEats, etc. No one to talk to, and no one to have sex with (besides in their imaginations). Further, give them cold instant coffee with creamers every morning; and feed them cold oatmeal in paper cups, and cold scrambled eggs on paper plates daily. Maybe give them some

jigsaw puzzles to complete, which they cannot share with others, and which may be missing a few pieces (just for good measure). Then repeat. Over and over again. Every day. Day after day after day. Leave them there for up to six months at a time (if they want to leave early, then give them the option of paying a $10,000 “get out of jail fee” card, after at least 14 days in isolation.) Sound a bit like torture, doesn’t it? Not that much different from what my 96-year-old father-inlaw had to endure, from March to August of this year, when he was “locked down” in his care home. And his was living in one of the good ones. A. Cameron

Editor has been strong voice of reason Editor: Re: Time to bid farewell, Murphy’s Law, Aug. 13 I’m sure the Delta Optimist will be inundated with many letters thanking outgoing editor Ted Murphy for his great service to our community, and I’d like to add

mine. In a time when journalism is so important in our world, Ted is a strong voice of reason and thoughtfulness. I truly enjoyed his many opinion pieces and general articles. He always delivered a balanced

approach to any topic, leaving the reader to contemplate an issue further. A talented guy. This award-winning editor will be missed. I wish him all the best in his new adventure. Thank you, Ted. Keith Munro

Library commended for keeping patrons safe Editor: Thank you to Ladner Pioneer Library staff and the Fraser Valley Regional Library for their excellent work in helping keep library patrons safe during these challenging COVID-19 days. Their creative FVRL

Express – Click, Pick, Go service and now access to the library’s public indoor space with a COVID-19 Safety Plan are commendable. In appreciation, our household will be donating to help cover some of the costs of their PPE (per-

sonal protective equipment). Many other Delta community services and businesses have also stepped up to keep residents safe and would likely welcome our support and kind encouragement. B. Yaworski

Questions come with Delta’s reopen plan

Editor: Re: Reopenings in works if cases don’t spike, July 23 I read with interest the article on Delta’s plan for reopening recreational facilities as we get into the next stages of COVID19. Three questions come to mind. The first is for those of us who have paid passes. Will these be extended

by the length of time we have not been able to use them? This seems to be the easiest and least expensive option, or will we be offered a refund which we can use when purchasing our new passes for 2021, which will probably be at a higher cost than the current one? My second question is: Will current pass holders

be given preference when booking programs or swimming lane times? We have already paid and will not be getting the benefit of any admission reductions. Lastly, as the facilities will only be open to Delta residents, what measures will be used to make sure that non-residents do not enter? Richard Turner

Backyard chickens could soon be coming to a neighbourhood near you. At the Aug. 10 Delta council meeting, civic politicians gave staff the go-ahead to amend a Delta zoning bylaw to allow chickens to be kept on additional single detached residential lots than currently permitted. Staff will also amend the Delta Animal Control bylaw to include details on numbers, types and standards of care for backyard chickens. The bylaws would be drafted in consultation with the Agricultural Advisory Committee (AAC) and the Ministry of Agriculture. Once the bylaws are prepared, staff will bring a report back to council with recommendations for first

and second reading and referral to a public hearing. In response to letters and a petition requesting Delta consider allowing backyard chickens to be kept, council referred the matter to the AAC, in which the committee received a presentation and associated research document at a recent meeting from local citizens Kristin Roberts and Claire Foster. Following that meeting, the committee pledged their support to

council to move ahead with the bylaw amendments. There has been growing interest in keeping domestic hens in urban areas within Metro Vancouver as of late. According to a Delta staff report, the petition presented to the committee collected more than 800 signatures and a Facebook Group has more than 180 members from Delta who support changing the zoning bylaw regulations.

Facebook corn sale turns out to be scam The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:

LADNER

• Aug. 10, at 1:52 a.m., 7400 block Vantage Way: The complainant advised of a break in alarm with a suspect vehicle. Police attended the area and observed two males running from the vehicle. One suspect was found hiding under a trailer and the other was found wondering in the area. Both were taken into custody. • Aug. 12, at 3:12 p.m. hours, 4700 Block 57th St: Report of a vehicle parked in the same spot roadside for almost two

months. Database queries revealed the vehicle was uninsured. Police attended the residence of the vehicle owner and advised the vehicle could not be parked on the street in the same spot for more than 72 hours, even if it was insured. The owner had the vehicle towed to his residence. • Aug. 13, at 2:17 p.m., 47A Ave/55B St: A construction flagger called to report that a driver of a vehicle was arguing and tried to get past construction. The flagger stepped in front of the vehicle and the driver backed up to turn around, in the process, lightly hitting the flagger with his bumper. Police spoke to both parties and warned the driver that failing to obey a flag person was a traffic offence resulting in a violation ticket. • Aug. 13, at 11:13 p.m., 8100 Block Hwy 99. While police were dealing with a traffic stop, another vehicle (Honda) almost rear ended a police vehicle with the emergency lights activated. The Honda veered to miss the police vehicle narrowly

sideswiping it. Police followed the Honda and eventually pulled it over. The driver stated that she was new to driving and was unsure on how to respond to the emergency lights. Police educated the driver on how to respond in the future and issued a violation ticket.

and discovered that children who were invited visitors at the residence earlier in the week grew upset as the bunny used to be theirs, and decided to take it back home with them. Arrangements have

been made to have the bunny returned. • Aug. 14, at 4:18 a.m., 1600 Block Duncan Drive: The complainant witnessed two males in a pick-up truck use flashlights to peer into

parked vehicles. The complainant also witnessed the two males pull the tailgate of a certain truck and were last seen leaving the area. The two males were gone on police arrival.

TSAWWASSEN

• Aug. 10, at 11:25 a.m., 800 block 57th Street: Complainant reported being scammed out of $20 from a female on the Tsawwassen LOOP (new) Facebook page who was advertising corn for sale for $20; delivered to those interested. The complainant provided personal particulars only to determine it was a scam and did not receive a delivery. The complainant recognizes it is “buyers beware” on the internet and only wished to advise police as numerous individuals were showing interest. • Aug. 13, at 12 p.m., 1600 block Tsawwassen Drive: Complainant reported her bunny was stolen from inside her residence, in a kennel area directly next to the front door. Police investigated

Local artists Natalie Way (top) and Jan Rankin have been busy working on a mural of the view of Mount Baker from Centennial Beach in the nature section of Tsawwassen Mills. The project is expected to be completed this week.

A couple of local artists are creating some familiar scenery inside of Tsawwassen Mills. Natalie Way and Jan Rankin are putting the finishing touches this week on a mural that features a view of Mt. Baker from Centennial Beach. The piece is located in the nature-themed area of the mall near Shopper’s Drug Mart. The pair were approached by Mills staff as more and more stores have re-opened amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “As we resumed operations we

wanted to welcome back shoppers in a positive, uplifting and authentic way. We thought what a better way to connect than with some local artists and utilize some of our physical space to give back and connect with the community,” explained Kristina Shier, Mills’ Marketing and Tourism Director. “When the mall was originally developed and built, we did a lot of work with Tsawwassen First Nation artists. This is the first time we have done active live painting in the centre. “We love it and I think it’s something we are going to continue to do in the future.” Way specializes in murals and it was

Delta youth featured in new film The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is delighted to announce the online release of Christina Willings’ multiple award-winning short film, Beauty: Beyond Binary. The film was shot in Delta, Langley and Montreal and features the Delta families of Bex Mosch & Kutrina Mosch-Shumuk, and Tru Wilson. Beauty explores the lives of five gender-creative kids, each uniquely engaged in shaping their ideas of what it means to be fully human. In a world of fixed positions and prescribed roles, claiming your own sense of gender can be challenging and sometimes scary. Free-flowing animated elements draw together the kids’ shared experiences in beautifully rendered fantasias, honouring and celebrating the power of imagination and the flourishing force of selfdetermination.

up to her and Rankin what experience they wanted to create It took a couple of weeks to put it altogether. “There aren’t a lot of necessarily iconic spots that everybody is going to know right away but this was an obvious one, the Mt. Baker view from Centennial Beach,” said Way. “The whole concept is about the child (or person) connected with nature a little bit differently. It’s more important these days and so that’s why we are flying a heron. The idea of the sun is there are better days to come. “It’s creating that whole feeling. I read people’s posts on Facebook and that. That’s how people are getting their

fill in life right now is nature. It’s providing the colour and excitement for them.” For Rankin, this is her first mural project and the timing couldn’t be better as COVID-19 restrictions have hit the arts community hard. “One of the challenges is we have very few outlets for art right now,” she said. “We have the ‘Love for Art’ event every year and we had to shut it down. It’s one of many things. Even our local galleries are down to only two days a week open and there are no markets.” “It’s good to see businesses finding other avenues to get our work out there,” added Way.

Willings (Chicks with Sticks, Cure for Love) was born in London, UK, raised in communities across British Columbia, and now calls Vancouver her home. She is a proud member of the LGBTQ2+ community. The film is a multi-award winner. Selected awards include: Kathleen Shannon & Documentary Social/Political awards | Yorkton Film Festival (2019) Most Inspirational Short Film in the 13-to-18-year-old category | Real 2 Real, Vancouver, Canada (2019) Audience Prize |Reel Pride, Winnipeg (2018) Best Short Documentary-Audience Choice | Providence Children’s Film Festival, Providence, USA (2019) Audience Award | Vancouver Queer Film Festival, Vancouver, Canada (2018). Towards the end of our regular services at All Saints I give a blessing. One of the lines is: “May you see the face of Jesus in everyone you meet; and may everyone see the face of Jesus in you.” Who do you believe Jesus to be? Who is this guy who we meet in the Bible? The Jesus we meet in the pages of the Bible may seem foreign to us, someone who is from another world, living in a different time. We may wonder if the Jesus we meet is the same Jesus who we yearn for, search for, and may have even met in our lives today in the year 2020. The disconnect on the surface between the

relationship with Jesus may be strained and distant. At other times, Jesus is close, walking along side us in our lives. For me, Jesus is the person whose face I see in the person standing in line ahead of me in the grocery store and the person who sleeps in the entrance to a store front. Sunny Tsawwassen youth program shines despite COVID-19

Taking his trowel from the cart, Parker focuses as he carefully tills the soil, trying to dig a large enough hole for the geraniums in the planter bed. Using his eyes to measure the depth, he picks up the geraniums and eases them into the earth. Not deep enough. He tries again. Nearby, his co-worker Austin is watering the flowers Parker has already planted, welcoming the red-coloured annuals to their new home in front of the Tsawwassen Return-It. Parker, 17, and Austin 16 (who is quick to mention he’s turning 17 soon), are summer youth employees of the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (more commonly known by its monicker of Sunny Tsawwassen). The community ambassador program

was created in collaboration with the TBIA, the Delta Community Living Society (DCLS) and the Delta School District, to assist youth in making the transition from high school to the adult world. The Leading Employment and Achieving Possibilities (LEAP) program run through DCLS, offers youth with disabilities the opportunity to gain valuable job experience, and provide them with the chance to see what sorts of careers they might be interested in. This is the fifth consecutive summer that Sunny Tsawwassen has employed young “community ambassadors” through LEAP, a program that continues despite the challenges presented by the global COVID-19 pandemic. “Although we were initially concerned that we might be forced to

to youth, the projects keep Sunny Tsawwassen looking great for residents and visitors alike. During the past five years, LEAPers have engaged in projects like painting, planting flowers, helping out during community events, and sprucing up the front of many businesses. “Our purpose with this program isn’t simply to complete a task of cleaning and beautification,” added Barlow. “It’s an opportunity to provide a real-life work experience for our community ambassadors.” Getting that work experience is a true collaborative effort. DCLS works with local youth who are interested in summer jobs and Sunny Tsawwassen pays their wages and provides them with equipment and tools. Funding is provided in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Grant.

postpone the program this year, we were pleased to see the risk diminish to the point where we could safely continue with a smaller team,” said Michelle Barlow, executive director of Sunny Tsawwassen. Although the job is outside and the work is safely physically distanced, both Parker and Austin wear face masks at all times to minimize the risk of contracting any illnesses. Both teens readily admit they like working outside and with their hands. Although Parker is currently undecided on what might be his ultimate dream job as an adult, Austin is interested in becoming an electrician. “It definitely isn’t an outside job for the most part,” he says, looking a bit disappointed before brightening up. “But it seems like it would be a good job to have.” Beyond the benefit of providing summer jobs

LOOK GOOD Time to Plan a New Fitness Routine

We've got your back. And everything in between. To book your massage call 604 283-7827 ext. 0 or visit www.alongsideyou.ca

The thought of the re start of school being right around the corner brings the possible return of some normality to many parents and kids schedules. This might be a good time to plan a new fitness routine. At this time group fitness classes that are run indoors still probably are not the safest solution but September is a great time to get outdoors and there are plenty of outdoor boot camps being run in south delta. To find the right one for you, you will want a group that is not only the right fit for your fitness needs but most likely also offers you a fun and social atmosphere. Location is also to be considered. Not only one that is close but one that offers hills or benches which can be used for your workout. It is also important to find a boot camps which offers equipment that is sanitized

and only for your use during class. We are lucky to have so many options in our community and with the Covid cases on the rise they are a great way to stay fit and stay healthy. Hopefully you can give one a try and see how they are for you.

ADVICE FROM THE PROS QUESTION: I heard that gold broke its all time high. Is that true?

Q: Your sign states you compound? What is compounding? Ans. That’s a great question. Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing a personalized medication for you. There are many reasons why you may need a compounded medication; you might be allergic to a certain filler in the commercially available product, you may need the medication in a liquid form rather than pill, the medication your doctor wants you to have may be discontinued by the manufacturer or your doctor may want you to have a specially blended cream or ointment for your skin. As a compounding pharmacist, I have undergone many hours of specialized training in order to properly make the exact product that your doctor recommends. I also compound many veterinary products (ever try to pill a cat?), specialized pain creams, bio-identical hormone preparations and many others. If you need help with medications, then a compounded solution might be right for you – come and see me at the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Tsawwassen for answers. “Your personal pharmacist is with you every step of the way” is not just a slogan – it is THE reason Paul Gibbons, Pharmacist/Owner at the Medicine Shoppe in Tsawwassen, looks forward to helping you every day.

ANSWER:

Jim Richardson, owner Western Coin and Stamp

It is partly true. In late July, gold broke the USA all time high of $1925 US from 2011. The Canadian price at that time was only $1875 CDN. The new USA high is $2035 USA. The Canadian high has been broken over 150 times since the the US high of 2011 and currently is $2710 CDN. With gold prices up 30% since the beginning of the year it is a perfect time to bring in the scrap jewellery that is broken or never worn anymore. This month we have seen more gold coming in than May and June combined. Silver is at a multi year high of $34.00 with a huge demand right now. Old Canadian and USA silver coins have a higher sale value than any time in the last 5 years. I do not ever remember paying premiums this large above spot silver price for pure silver as what we are paying now. For silver Maple leaves and 10 ounce bars we are paying $2.50 and $2.00 per ounce respectively above spot price. These premiums we are paying will definitely be getting lower as the mints ramp up production and our shipments arrive in. Jim Richardson

QUESTION:

Question:

Hi Paul, The City is doing a water-main replacement on my street. Should I be concerned that this may affect the plumbing in my house. Stan

What is ProPerty transfer tax and do i have to Pay it?

Answer:

ANSWER:

Paul Bach Owner 604-940-2268

www.PJBmechanical.com

Hi Stan, It’s a valid concern. Any time you shut off and re-start large plumbing lines there can be issues. One thing that often happens is the moving of sediment. When a line is unpressurized and then repressurized, dirt and corrosion can be dislodged and redirected down the main. The end result of this can be a plugged up PRV, (Pressure Reducing Valve), in your home. The PRV is a very important component of your home’s plumbing system and it’s something that you want to take care of. If you notice discoloured or dirty water or you have a drop in water pressure, a plugged PRV is often the culprit. Give us a call. We can test your water pressure, make sure your lines are clear and clean your PRV so that it doesn’t do any damage. Paul

The property transfer tax is charged by the Provincial Government and is collected by your lawyer at closing. In British Columbia, the amount the purchaser must pay is 1% of the first $200,000 and 2% of the balance. Home buyers purchasing a primary residence are exempt from paying PTT in British Columbia providing you have never owned a home anywhere prior (this includes outside of Canada) and the purchase price is $500,000 or under. There are also special exemptions for anyone purchasing a new construction up to $750,000.

Q: Market volatility makes me nervous. What should I do to stop worrying?

QUEsTIoN My parents have hearing aids and I want each pair to last as long as possible. How can I help with this?

Ans. If you are nervous about your investments, you’re not alone. Here’s my advice:

ANsWER

Filter out the media noise. Dramatic news makes good headlines, but in reality volatility is normal and healthy. Successful investing involves using the “ups” and “downs” to your advantage. Ensure your portfolio is well structured. Your financial advisor should customize an investment portfolio unique to your circumstances, carefully considering your specific needs for wealth protection, tax efficient income and comfort with risk.

Just like a beloved car, hearing aids perform their best (and for the longest) when they are regularly cleaned, checked and maintained with care: • Always keep hearing aids dry. Make sure they are removed before going swimming, taking a shower, or applying hairspray.

Mark Nickel

Hearing Instrument Practitioner Phone: 604-943-0033 5682 12 Avenue, Tsawwassen www.TsawwassenHearing.com

• Get into the habit of cleaning hearing aids everyday. Never use household cleaning products, oil, or water to clean them – instead, use the small brush that was included with the hearing aids and a clean cloth. (If you no longer have the brush or wax filters that originally came with the hearing aids, your hearing health provider will often provide you with replacements free of charge.) • Get hearing aids regularily cleaned and checked by a professional. Consider this person your hearing mechanic! We recommend having them professionally checked and cleaned every 4-6 months, but you should never hesitate to make an appointment to have them looked at if you notice a problem with them in the meantime.

A: Digital Anesthetic is a “The state of the art” technology that controls flow rate and pressure of the anesthesia during the injection. This method is significantly more comfortable than the traditional dental syringe and employs a technique that makes the injection virtually painless. This type of freezing shortens treatment time for every patient and best of all, pain management for the patient is phenomenal. Some people don’t even realize that freezing is taking place. It’s nice to see children, who have never had dental anesthesia, leave their visit never having to experience the “anxiety” associated with “Syringe-Type” delivery methods. Many patients who work would never schedule a procedure in the middle of the day because of profound and lasting anesthesia. With Digital Anesthetic system, patients are now willing to come in at any time, knowing they will be able to communicate effectively at their job. This method of freezing greatly decreases anxiety associated with dental treatment and makes life easier for both the dental team and the patient.Call Riverside Dental at (604)946-9588 or email at smile@ladnerdentist.com if you have any questions about this procedure 604-946-9588 smile@ladnerdentist.com

Waiting for a green light COVID-19 measures in place if high school football season proceeds MARK BOOTH

Washington Capitals forward and Delta native Beck Malenstyn has been blogging about his experiences inside the NHL bubble in Toronto.

Malenstyn pens blog on bubble

Delta’s Beck Malenstyn is bringing fans inside the playoff “bubble.” The 22-year-old member of the Washington Capitals is writing a blog on his experience inside the “bubble” that features the eight remaining Eastern Conference teams in Toronto for the Stanley Cup playoffs during the COVID-19 pandemic The Ladner native made his NHL debut back in November after being called up from the Capitals’ American League Hockey affiliate in Hershey. He was Washington’s fifth round pick (14th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. The Capitals trail in their best-of-seven series with the New York Islanders 3-1 following the Caps 3-2 win Tuesday.

In football terms, the South Delta Sun Devils are in the shadows of their own goalposts and need to march about 90 yards to reach a potential 2020 season. Typically, the end of August provides plenty of buzz for the long-running program with two-day workouts leading up to the start of classes and the B.C. High School Football season. Like almost every other sport, COVID-19 has the campaign in jeopardy with plenty needing to happen in the days ahead. The BC Secondary Schools Football Association is doing its part. Even though Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has made it clear no provincial championships will take place for a very least the fall season, BCSSFA have improvised with a potential exhibition only schedule. The school sizes and tiers have been put aside to create regional play that wouldn’t start until the end of September. The Sun Devils would be part of a Surrey-Delta Conference that would include only two other 3A programs, Seaquam and Lord Tweedsmuir. The rest are 2A and tier two. Right now, however, Sun Devils head coach Ray Moon would just be thrilled to even be on the practice field. “We are just waiting for the greenlight. Right now nobody is even allowed to have throw arounds. Safety is first and foremost,” he said. For us to be able to play we have to have clearance from about nine different agencies or groups. That’s from the Provincial Health Officer right down to the parents.” The safety measures needed to be implemented are plenty.

OPTIMIST FILE PHOTO

A potential 2020 high school football season is providing plenty of audibles for longtime South Delta head coach Ray Moon.

Equipment adjustments include full shields on helmets. Coaches would have to wear masks at all times including practice and games. Safety zones would have be marked off on the sidelines with a safety officer in place to enforce potential infractions. The additional equipment costs would be absorbed by the programs.

“There’s lots of challenges. Sponsorships are non-existent, as are any fundraising opportunities,” continued Moon. The Sun Devils have plenty of work ahead of them after losing a number of players to graduation and a significant turnover in their coaching staff too, including the departure of longtime coordinators Mark McDonald

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES

ASPELEITER, Joseph February 25, 1929 − August 13, 2020 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of a kind and loving man, Joe. Left to mourn are his wife of 63 years, Theresa, and his 3 daughters, Rose Skladowski (Wayne), Rita Baydala (Dave), and Regina Challoner (Bob). Also missing him are his grandchildren, Brad (Crystal), Jenna (Trevor), Shelby (Chad), and Kristina; and his great−grandchildren, Abbey and Abel. Joe was born in Romania, moved to Germany at age 12, and in 1952 he immigrated to Richmond, BC, where he married and started his family. Throughout his life Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, fitness, sharing his cabin at Sheridan Lake and long summer days with his family at the beach. Joe loved dancing, singing, and playing the accordion. Joe was always smiling and happy, he made friends easily and always welcomed any visitors, and most of all he loved being with his family. He will forever be in our hearts, minds and memories. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC in Joe’s memory would be appreciated.

MERRITT, ROY Stanley November 26, 1933 - August 4, 2020 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Roy Stanley Merritt, of Delta, BC at the age of 86. Roy died at Amica’s Assisted Living Facility in White Rock, his home since December 2019. His family was grateful to be by his side for the final hours of his life. Roy is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hanni Marie (Ria) Merritt; his children, Bradley (Patricia) of Victoria, BC, Craig (Lisa Woudzia) of Delta, BC and Corinne Gray (Christopher) of Surrey, BC; his seven grandchildren: Samuel, Joshua, Daniel, Sophia, Annelise, Olivia and Keira.

Roy was predeceased by his parents Gordon and Mabel and his siblings Alice Dance, Lloyd, Pearl Carr, Don Randle, and Archie. Born in Pangman, SK, the youngest of 6 children, Roy moved to Langley, BC in 1936. After graduating from Lord Tweedsmuir H.S. in 1951, he enrolled at Langley H.S. to take the academic courses required for entry to university. Roy graduated from UBC in Engineering Physics in 1959. In March of 1958, Roy married the love of his life, Hanni Marie Pedersen. Brad and Craig arrived in 1960 and 1961 respectively, and in 1962, the Merritt family moved to New Orleans, LA, where Corinne was born in 1964. Roy’s career with Kaiser Aluminum and AMAX Metals would lead to stops in West Virginia, Ohio (twice!), Connecticut and California before moving back home in 1973. Roy and family settled in Tsawwassen, BC, where he and Ria lived until recently. Always ready to embrace a challenge, Roy started Rypac Aluminum Recycling in 1975. He was always grateful for the help he received from the Merritt family, and to his children, for their involvement in the company’s success... still a going concern 45 years later.

COMING EVENTS

Roy was an avid reader and lifelong learner, with a particular interest in history, politics and current events. He loved a good argument or debate, but it was difficult to match his intellect. Aspirational into his retirement years, Roy travelled all over the world with Ria, learned to sail and bought a sailboat in his 70’s, built a passive home at 80 and drove two electric cars - the last one a red Tesla that he just purchased last year! Roy loved his family, valued the relationships he developed in business, and cared about community and several global causes. It should be said that Roy strongly encouraged his children, grandchildren and anyone else he came across to also pursue their dreams, through education or other endeavours… the message was always one of encouragement, support and “can-do” ….nothing was impossible in Roy’s world. We have learned that Roy was quiet and generous in his philanthropy. If so inclined, a donation may be made in his honour to any favourite charity or to one of his, some of which included: American Civil Liberties Union, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Canadian Wildlife Federation, Planned Parenthood, KCTS 9, Population Matters, Smithsonian, Emily’s List, NARAL, Amnesty International, Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, DSCC, World Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth and National Audubon Society. Roy’s family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at Amica for their caring and kindness during the final months, days and hours of his life; as well as, the staff at Delta hospital for the quality care provided to Roy after his stroke last October. A celebration of Roy’s remarkable life will be held at a later date.
