Frustrated Point Roberts property owners hold rally at border MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

About 40 Lower Mainland residents, who own property in Point Roberts, held a rally at the border on Sunday afternoon to express their frustration of not being able to access their homes. The U.S./Canada border has been closed to non-essential travel since March and border restrictions have been extended through to at least Sept. 21. Canadian residents entering the U.S. without COVID19 symptoms are currently required to quarantine for 14 days once they return. Point Roberts can only be accessed by crossing a vehicle through Canada, flying in on a small plane or by private boat. The owners want to see car visits to their homes declared essential. “I just want to go my property. Check for rodents, check for leaks, electrical and all that stuff,” said Rob Espenhain, a Ladner resident and one of the rally organizers. “It doesn’t make sense that they will allow you to fly to Seattle, drive to Bellingham then fly by small

It’s an extreme higher risk of coming into contact with COVID-19 at a much higher cost.” Espenhain suggests owners could be given a temporary permit that would have to be displayed on their car to ensure there is no travel in Point Roberts beyond their homes. Let me go down there and look after my horses, my boat and my house because nobody else is. “We have a house that was built in 1912, our family has been here forever and a lot of these people are the same. Delta parents will now have an opportunity to transition their children back to school. Like other school districts, the Delta district isn’t offering online or hybrid learning options, but on Tuesday announced it will offer parents concerned about potentially having their children exposed to COVID-19, a transition plan. “We recognize that parents are seeing other school districts offer an additional option to address concerns about sending children back to school for in-class instruction. Since the release of our back to school plan on Aug. 26, we have been connecting directly with those parents who continue to have questions to try to address their concerns. Based on the many unique circumstances and different requests we have received, we believe it is unlikely that an additional option will meet all families’ needs. As a result, Delta’s approach is for the district and school principals to work with families on a personalized transition for their children if needed,” the district states on its website. Parents have received information from school principals on what to expect upon a return to schools next week. Instructions have been given on what students should be doing and where to report on school grounds on Thursday, Sept. 10 when they will be familiarized with safety procedures. Students will be assigned to their class, find out who is in

their learning group, practice their new routines and familiarize themselves with how to safely move from the class to outdoor and common areas. Students are also to report the following day on Friday. Superintendent Doug Sheppard, in an open letter to parents last week, provided information on the district’s plan, which has been approved by the Ministry of Education, as well as learning options available. The only options include faceto-face, in-class instruction, or distributed learning including Home Quest or home schooling for the entire school year in which parents assume all

responsibility for their child’s learning. If parents choose home schooling or Home Quest, the earliest that students would be able to return to their home school is September 2021. If a student who is currently attending a Delta school registers for those alternatives for the upcoming school year, the district says it’s committed to holding that student’s spot at their home school for the following school year. Elementary students will be back for in-class instruction, full time from Monday to Friday. Under the ministry’s guidelines, learning groups may

include up to 60 elementary students, however in Delta, learning groups will be based on class-size limits. That means learning groups in kindergarten will have up to 20, while the number moves up with the grades with grades 4 to 7 to have learning groups up to 30. Masks will only be mandatory within high-traffic areas of schools. Secondary students will be at school each day and will be taking two, full-time courses on a 10-week quarter schedule. This means students will still take eight courses over the year, but only two courses within a quarter.

Paddle boarder found, carried back to shore IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A paddle boarder was rescued from the waters of Centennial Beach on Saturday morning thanks to Delta police and the quick thinking of her companion. Around 11:30 a.m., DPD received a call about a paddle border, reported missing from the popular Boundary Bay beach. Police say the wind had apparently taken the paddle boarder far from the beach, and she hadn’t been seen by her companion for over 40 minutes. Police say about 10 minutes later, the original caller phoned back to indicate he’d found his missing paddle boarding

friend, however, police learned the boarder had become extremely cold and was unable to continue on her own. At the time, the tide was quite far out. “Learning of her plight our officers made a two km trek out in the shallow waters of Boundary Bay, locating the duo around 12:20 p.m.,” said Insp. Ciaran Feenan. “The paddle boarder’s condition was deteriorating, and she was unable to walk, so police started carrying her back to shore, as the tide was coming in. “Approximately one km from the shore two Delta firefighters came out to assist our officers, and wrapped the boarder in thermal blankets. Police and firefighters then

alternated carrying her safely back to shore.” DPD say this summer many people have taken up paddle boarding as a way to get outside, and enjoy the beautiful community. However, the sport is not without its risks, and DPD advise people to paddle with a buddy if possible – a decision that was definitely the right one in this situation. “Weather conditions can change quickly, even in shallow waters,” added Feenan. “We definitely advise going out with a companion, and having a phone in a waterproof case.” The boarder was taken to hospital. Police called to follow up and were assured she is doing much better.

Survey shows concerns with school plan SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta parents have some huge concerns about sending their children back to the classroom next week as the number of reported cases of COVID-19 have shot back up in recent weeks. Available for viewing on the school district’s website, a survey by the Delta District Parent Advisory Council garnered approximately 320 responses representing between 400-to-500 students, while 72 per cent of respondents have elementary age children. According to the survey, just 13 per cent of parents supported a full return to school and “getting on with it”, noting they felt there was enough being done and they were anxious to have the students return to as much “normal” as possible. However, there was an undercurrent of pressure on these parents for their own work situations, child-minding and uncertainty, the survey noted. Among the other

results, 15 per cent of respondents said they’re considering home school or Home Quest for their children. Eighteen per cent said they feel extreme pressure relating to work, childcare and uncertainty, those parents spanned from single parents, particularly of young children, as well as dual income families who do not have workplace flexibility. Twenty five per cent of respondents were worried about underlying health issues of children or members of their family, while 31 per cent expressed serious concern for students’ mental well-being. Meanwhile, 35 per cent “had very legitimate concern” about cohorts, with most being relating to inadvertent bubble increases. “For example, families with multiple children have an automatically exponential (literally) increase in their bubble size. This coupled with staff or others will inflate exposure well beyond many parents’ risk tolerance. There are also concerns about their

child reconnecting with friends and peers to shore up their eroding disconnection. This is especially true in high school, where the previously shifting blocks allowed for many social connections and variety,” the survey noted. Families are also worried about their children being “stuck” in groups where they might not feel happy and, thus, inadvertently compound an already dire situation, according to the survey. There was a feeling of lack of control or confidence during nonclassroom time, such as lunch hour and recess, and that students would all be able to follow the new social distance rules themselves, especially at elementary schools. The survey also found 47 per cent were worried about health measures and infrastructure, including air quality and ventilation in schools. “Many were strong advocates for mask wearing, but some had concerns about the young ones grappling with the discipline and comfort of mask wear-

ing. Many expressed concerns about handwashing, and how much time this would take for elementary kids, while some expressed concern there was not enough

The City of Delta’s new patio policy could become permanent. In a further effort to help struggling bars and restaurants, Coun. Dylan Kruger will introduce a motion at the next regular meeting of council on Sept. 14 to extend the expanded patio program indefinitely, and further direct staff to authorize the winterization of patios on city property through the use of tents, louvered roofs, and heaters. Kruger’s motion notes social distancing requirements due to COVID-19 significantly reduced the number of patrons allowed to be safely seated in a given area, but Delta’s summer expanded patio program has given local restaurants

and cafes the ability to seat additional tables and stay open throughout the pandemic. However, the loss of that additional patio space this fall may result in the temporary or permanent closure of many longtime local businesses, he said. City manager Sean McGill said the new patio policy was well received. “On a personal note, I very much enjoy them and it has been a great way to support local business. I am not aware of any compliance issues and again the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. With respect to continuation of the program staff are preparing a report for council on this,” McGill said. A recent staff report to city council notes,

“As the business community moves through the restart phase, it is evident that small businesses in Delta continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many small business owners continue to struggle to achieve sales targets and are having a hard time bringing staff back to work. Restaurant and cafe owners are particularly concerned about what business will look like once outdoor patio spaces close at the end of the summer season.” Restaurants Canada last week released a new report, The 2020 Foodservice Facts Report, which notes that, due to the pandemic, the restaurant industry could lose between $21.7 billion and $44.8 billion in annual sales this year.

Delta has had 62 COVID-19 cases SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control has finally released municipal-level data on how many people have been diagnosed with COVID19 in their local communities. The data shows the numbers from January to the end of July among the communities in all the health authorities, something that the City of Delta had been requesting for months. The numbers for the Greater Vancouver region show that Delta had 62 cases, Surrey had 521 cases, Langley had 138, Abbotsford had 454, Richmond had 103 and Vancouver had 202 cases. The data also shows

Burnaby had 155, the Tri-Cities had 178, North Vancouver had 205, West Vancouver had 45, while Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows had 96 and Mission had 158. The Central Okanagan had the most cases outside the region at 209 followed by Kamloops at 53. The current data doesn’t show numbers from Aug. 1 onwards, nor a breakdown of the individual communities of Ladner, Tsawwassen or North Delta. In a recent letter to Premier John Horgan, Mayor George Harvie wrote that while Delta is working hard to ensure that provincial guidelines are followed, and collectively doing everything possible to mitigate the

effects of the pandemic within the community, local data is needed. “We strongly believe that COVID-19 data for the City of Delta, including case numbers, hospitalizations and deaths broken down by age group would help us determine the effectiveness of our local efforts to combat the spread of the virus. In addition, as we incrementally reopen Delta facilities to the public, this data would help us better ensure we are taking all appropriate measures to respond to the level of risk specific to our community. I am aware of a number of jurisdictions, including Washington State, where this data is available at a community level,” Harvie wrote.

n just a little under a week, children will be heading back to their respective schools for the start of the most unusual school year in possibly our lifetime. During the past few weeks, anxiety levels have been elevated as parents grapple with the uncertainty of what school life will look like, while teachers, administrators, unions, health officials and the provincial government, in turn, try to find a balance amidst that uncertainty, in presenting a plan that works for everyone. Online chatter from parents and teachers has been thus far mixed. Several comments on back to school stories on the Optimist Facebook page have expressed strong opinions on whether parents are comfortable sending their children back to school. Some have said they have full confidence in the plans, while others are just not sure. I fall into the just not sure category. Full disclosure – I am not a parent, but I am an uncle to an eight-year-old niece and seven-year-old nephew. My sister has some health challenges and a compromised immune system, so I know first-hand the anxiety that their family has been experiencing as they decide whether or not to send their children back to school. They have decided to do so, by the way. I realize no plan is 100 per cent foolproof and no plan will keep everyone happy. In general, I have been pleased with the COVID-19 pandemic response from our provincial health officials. They have put in guidelines and protocols to the overall response that have been good. There are are also many good aspects of this back to school plan that I agree with. It’s a good start, but it’s just that – a good start. Additional measures should be looked at including: better policies around masks, more physical distancing with smaller class sizes and additional options for remote learning. Schools should be a safe place for all, so why not take few extra days to make sure of that.

The calendar says September, so where did summer go?

M

y clock is completely thrown off. I can’t believe it is September

already. All the plans I had for this summer are still written on my list of projects. Build a deck, replace a door, renovate the kitchen and spend time with the family, but here we are, Labour Day this Monday, and none of it is done, although I did spend time with the family. They’re tired of me now. It can’t be the end of summer. The Tour de France just started. The Canucks are still in the playoffs (at the time of writing…), with no Tour de Delta or Boundary Bay Airshow, it’s tough to keep track. Did the page for August on my calendar get stuck to July? I don’t have kids in school any longer, so I haven’t been getting the District emails. If it wasn’t for my new pandemic obsession with the FreeCell’s daily challenge, I’d have no idea what day it was. But sure enough, next week schools will start back, although the exact structure will remain to be seen. People are nervous for obvious rea-

sons, but like anything else with COVID-19, we don’t know everything. We’ve held hockey camps, soccer will be starting soon as well. Lucky for soccer it is outside, where the virus has a harder time being spread. A little bit of normal is a good thing, but not so much that we forget where we are. While the news focuses on the pandemic, many other issues fall under the radar. I heard a report that incidents of domestic violence have increased and intensified. We also heard very high overdose numbers from Dr. Henry last week, another tragedy that continues to unfold. While we have to be careful during this pandemic, we also

have to realize the greater impact it’s having on our society by staying locked up. On the bright side, it appears the seasonal flu may be less intense than normal. Infection rates in Australia, where they are just coming out of winter, are way down. Our early infection rates are a fraction of what they normally are. That’s no surprise, and even a glimmer of good news. It shows people are taking the spread of germs seriously. I’m optimistic as we head into fall. We have a ‘new normal’, people are used to staying 6’ apart, and wearing masks is becoming more prevalent. As the weather gets colder, it’s an advantage – all that exhaled breath that might infect someone is now being used to keep your face warm. By November, you’ll be pretty happy to have that mask on. And I can’t wait to see the costumes at Hallowe’en! Hallowe’en? I’m not over the end of summer yet! To mask or not to mask Editor: The bottom-line – wear a mask when you cannot socially distance – period. It is that simple! Wearing masks has become politicized. It was not necessary and it has done a lot of harm – far beyond the obvious. Dr. Bonnie Henry is an empathetic and compassionate physician. She clearly is extremely smart and experienced. I trust her unconditionally and I do not even know her, but she also is a politician, so, I think there is value in reframing what she has already said and in expanding on things. Henry has tried to strike a balance between self-determination and utilitarianism. It appears she favours cooperation or collaboration over compliance. She understands that intelligent and free people have choices and compliance and enforcement have significant limitations. It is better to convince people that their best interests are served by collaborating. I agree – wholeheartedly. Henry, I am quite sure,

is also knowledgeable about human factors – human behaviour. When someone is asked to change their behaviour, assuming they choose to, a process is engaged that requires commitment, support, and time. It takes time to meaningfully change behaviours that have become longtime habits. While the time-frame is variable it is measured in months and years or longer – not days and weeks. There is a psychological theorem that predicts a transition from unconsciously incompetent through consciously incompetent to consciously competent and, finally, unconsciously competent. The COVID-19 virus does not care about politics or the nuances of human behaviour. It will not give us time to change our behaviours just because we need or want it. There is a need to come together right now! Few people have asked the question - “Why, since the only initial defences against a viral respiratory pathogen are behavioural, was the

public not prepared?” That is an interesting question because we have had over 100 years to prepare for COVID-19 since the 1918/19 flu pandemic. The medical profession, scientists, business people, and politicians all have a story to tell but are not telling it. The lack of honesty and transparency have allowed politicalization of mask wearing, has contributed to pandemic unpreparedness, and that has resulted in many preventable deaths. There is no conspiracy but there is a need to understand how that happened. At this moment what we need to do is acknowledge that we are all in this together regardless of how we got here and as such, when social distancing cannot be guaranteed – wear a mask – please! There will be a time when we can demand transparency, honesty, courage, and humility in order to fully understand how we got here in an effort to inform future preparedness. That time is not now. Full-serve gas options needed Editor: I recently read your article in the Optimist regarding Delta council and their discussion about full-serve gas stations. I moved here from Qualicum Beach where I frequented a full-serve gas station and I was treated royally. Not only was my gas tank filled, but my windows were cleaned and my tires and

oil checked. When I first moved here I did frequent the one and only full-serve station. There were times (when they were shortstaffed) there was no one available to provide fullservice. In the few months I used the service of the full-service gas station, there was never once that any other services (win-

dow cleaning, checking oil or tires) was offered. I feel seniors’ deserve a gas station that is willing to provide full-service. Not all seniors are physically-able to do the service themselves without hardship. With the number of seniors’ living in Delta, a full-service gas station is a reasonable expectation. Cathryn Bolton

Overdose crisis: end stigma, save lives

Editor: COVID-19 has impacted all of our community, but it is important to consider that we are being impacted by a dual emergency situation. Provincially, the number of people who overdosed has gone up during the course of this pandemic. Forced isolation due to COVID-19 has definitely helped slow the upward curve of COVID-19 and as a province, we did see numbers decline steadily. What we did not see is the increasing number of people overdosing from opioids and subsequently dying. Currently about 17 per cent of British Columbians, somewhere around 800,000 people experience a mental illness or substance use issue. An estimated 84,000 children and youth in B.C. have a diagnosed mental disorder, yet less than one-third of those children who seek help are receiving mental health services. COVID-19 has further widened the gap and left many cut off from services, vanishing support structure, laid off, and overwhelmed with uncertainty. In the last few months, British Columbia reported a record number of illicit drug toxicity deaths. B.C. Coroners Service Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe reported 175 people died in June, which was up from 171 deaths in May. According to the BC Coroner’s reports, in Delta, we had 70 drug toxicity deaths from April 2016-2020, six deaths from March-June 2020, and BC Ambulance reported 74 ambulance dispatches for ingestion poisoning from March 2020 to July 2020. Julie Chadwick, Executive Director at Deltassist and

co-chair of the Delta Overdose Response Community Action Table (ODCAT), stated that, “Our street drug supply remains highly unsafe; people have experienced increased isolation; how we have been able to provide services has impacted all people, but our most vulnerable have been impacted significantly.” Due to the pandemic, more people have been overdosing alone, with no one nearby to help by calling 911 or administer the overdose antidote -Naloxone. “It is happening all around our province and in our neighbourhoods,” said parent and advocate Julie Cochrane. “Our loved ones are dying, in their bedrooms, in their bathrooms, in their family homes ... alone. Our young men have been especially hard hit with this crisis, accounting for roughly 85 per cent of the deaths and of those, approximately 70 per cent worked in the trades. We have a crisis of spirit going on that is simply not understood by most, and I implore people to educate themselves about addiction and drug use. It is unbearable and unacceptable that the suffering our family has endured over the last two and a half years after the loss of our son be experienced by one more single family.” British journalist Johann Hari points out that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, its connection. Stigma disconnects and can make people feel ashamed of their drug use which often prevents them from seeking and receiving help if they need or want it. Stigmatizing language contributes to shame, isolation and risk taking which often leads people to use drugs alone, leading to overdosing and dying alone.

Reframing language when talking about people who use drugs is key to reducing stigma. The opioid crisis is still here and the current pandemic that we are all pre-occupied with has only made matters worse, but if we do not focus on addressing the stigma and make it easier for people to get the help they need promptly, we will keep losing people to this crisis. People using opioids or other substances are safest when they use only in the presence of someone who will call for immediate help if needed, or to use at an overdose-prevention or supervised-consumption site, and to have drugs checked before they’re used. The Lifeguard app specifically supports those who are most at risk of overdose death – people who use alone. The Lifeguard App can be downloaded for free at both the App Store and Google Play. Families have lost loved ones to overdose and they are grieving silently. The Delta Overdose Response Community Action Team (CAT) invites the Delta community to reflect on those we have lost to overdose and to end the silence and stigma of overdose. #endoverdose”. BC Chamber pushes for Massey replacement SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A replacement for the George Massey Tunnel needs to be constructed sooner rather than later in order to help reinvigorate the B.C. economy. That’s one of several policy recommendations to the province by the B.C. Chamber of Commerce in a recent report now made public. The B.C. economic recovery submission notes that in a time of economic crises, investment in transportation infrastructure, specifically tradeenabling infrastructure, will have a huge impact on citizens and businesses alike in the near term. The expediting tunnel replacement was listed as a “shovel-ready” project that would provide a short-term economic stimulus and drive long-

term economic growth when the COVID-19 pandemic passes and economic supply chains rebound. The report also recommends a bridge option. “The long span bridge option, in a previous form, had already received environmental approval. Given the existing and valid environmental certificate for a larger structure, it is likely that the EA process for a smaller bridge could be completed well within the two years, if not more expeditiously. Conceivably, the environmental assessment for the bridge will also be less costly. As the report from ministry staff stated: ‘the environmental assessment is expected to be the least complex, as much, but not all, of the assessment would be similar to the previ-

ous 10-lane bridge,’” the report states. The report also notes that, given the facts available, it is unclear how the immersed tube tunnel was seen to be more aligned with the goal of increasing the share of sustainable modes of transportation. Delta South Liberal MLA Ian Paton, on Twitter, was quick to agree with the report, saying a replacement for the George Massey Tunnel is the exact shovel ready project needed to help get B.C.’s economy back on track. The province is working towards developing a business case on a preferred option that will be completed later this year. The go-ahead to initiate the environmental review for a bridge or tunnel option would happen in 2021.

Alert driver helps police nab impaired suspect South Delta Crime Beat The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:

TSAWWASSEN

• Aug. 25, 4:31 p.m., 5500 block 9th Avenue: Complainant called to report a suspicious vehicle in the Winskill Aquatic Centre parking lot parked in the area for six to eight hours at a time. Police attended and spoke to the driver who has no fixed address and

is known to live out of his vehicle. No issues, vehicle is insured and parked legally. Driver was left to read his paper in peace. • Aug. 26, 10:05 a.m.: Complainant called police requesting guidance and assistance regarding the mother of his children, who had just arrived from California and was wanting to take custody of the kids without having quarantined for 14 days. Police called BC Health who unequivocally stated that she must self-isolate/quarantine for 14 days before seeing any other person, including her kids. Police spoke with the mother and advised the instructions. She agreed, but however stated that she would be looking into it further to seek something in writing from BC Health. • Aug. 26, 6:49 p.m., 1 Ferry Causeway: BC Ferries reported that staff observed a youth under a blanket and inside

the trunk of a vehicle (rent-a-car). Police attended while the vessel unloaded and identified the driver of the vehicle who was travelling with his two young children (who were laughing while police were talking to their dad) and his daughter had put down the back seat of the car to lay across the trunk and back seat of the sedan. The daughter was playing games on her cell phone and had pulled the blanket over her head while playing. Nothing suspicious, family departed vessel without issue. • Aug. 30, 11:36 p.m.: Complainant reported a number of high end cars in the 4300 block of Salish Sea Drive and was concerned that the drivers might engage in street racing. Police attended and located the vehicles. No issues. No offence observed. The drivers were from Metro Vancouver and were just hanging out in the area,

road. Police located the vehicle, with the driver passed out in the driver’s seat with the car keys beside him. A breath test was given and passed. Police then administered the roadside Standard Field Sobriety Test, and the driver performed poorly. The driver was issued a ticket for “no driver’s licence” and issued a 24-hour suspension with a vehicle impound. • Aug. 25, at 9:21 p.m. (location withheld): Complainant called police to report his son was drunk, yelling and smashing things. Upon police arrival, the complainant advised that the son was angry as he had misplaced a can of beer he had bought earlier and wanted to drink it. Police questioned the son as to how reasonable it was to get this angry regarding a can of beer, to which he realized it was not. He agreed to go to bed for the rest of the

and they happen to be well enough off to afford nice cars. Drivers and their nice vehicles were moved along.

LADNER

• Aug. 24 at 7:07 a.m., 5800 block of Mountain View Blvd: Complainant reported a wire theft at Delta Hospital. He advised that he had returned to work to find approximately 50 feet (100 pounds) of copper wire cut from construction site, with the wire dug from underground. • Aug. 25 at 5:44 p.m., Highway 17/72nd Street off ramp: Complainant contacted police to report that he was following a vehicle and believed that the driver was impaired. He advised call takers that the vehicle was driving in the middle of two lanes on Highway 17 at 72nd St. He continued to follow the vehicle on Highway 17 where the vehicle continued to swerve on the

evening. The complainant thankful for police attendance and was fine with son staying if he went to bed, police would be called back if the son did not comply. No other issues, no injuries, no property damage. • Aug. 30 at 7:34 p.m., 9200 block Burns Drive: Police were called to a motor vehicle collision by a passenger in one of the vehicles. She advised that she thought the driver of the vehicle may be impaired. Upon arrival, police spoke to the driver and noted he was extremely lethargic in his movements and speech and appeared to have trouble keeping his eyes open. The driver confirmed he had taken drugs recently. The driver was detained/chartered/ warned for impaired driving and refused participation. He was also breaching conditions not to drive. The driver was issued the appropriate tickets and court notice.

Southlands vision coming into focus IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The past meets the present at the new Southlands development in Tsawwassen. An ambitious project, years in the making, Southlands is the first project of its kind in North America — a master planned beach community rooted in farming and food — reestablishing the culture of agriculture in a new sense of place. Century Group president Sean Hodgins said a Discovery Centre to

showcase the project is scheduled to open by mid-September with the first townhomes and cottages on sale. “It will be like presales, but basically you’ll be seeing finished product ready to move into,” said Hodgins who met with the Optimist last week to tour the construction site. “We really wanted to showcase the quality of the housing that we’re building and we knew we couldn’t do that just showing a plan on a piece of paper. Phase one will consist of 75 townhomes and

cottages with traditional farmstead design, complete with a collection of agrarian outbuildings, natural open space, and a network of trails that connect people to the beach at Boundary Bay Park. The project will eventually include 950 housing units and approximately 80,000 square feet of commercial space. The heart of Southlands is its vibrant Market District — with craft-style businesses, including restaurants, artisan shops, a Market Square for fresh produce, open-air performance space, and allot-

ment gardens. “Farming and food is the ethos of the community overall and discovering what that will look like is going to be an on-going effort and challenge,” added Hodgins. “We want to see people on their porches, having a cup of coffee, waving at people who are walking by - really connecting as a community. We tried to find something that would be at home in Tsawwassen and something that evokes a farm feeling and I think we have accomplished that.” Hodgins said what they have tried to do throughout the development is fulfill the promise of connecting food and agriculture. “We have a lot of work to do to make that a reality, but we have a great group of people involved. The farming part will

We understood and appreciated food well before we ate it, as we pulled potatoes from the garden or watched mom or dad make jam. “But most of us have lost touch with farms and

growing food. The global economics of food and agriculture mean there are fewer family farms and fewer connections to agriculture in our society. In a world with plentiful food we often lack the sense of connection we once had to how food comes to the table. “If we could create a place where farming and food could energize a neighbourhood then, in a modern sense, we could re-establish something we lost. That is the promise of Southlands— that we try to make those connections and reestablish the culture of agriculture.” At the Aug. 10 Delta council meeting, Hodgins provided an update on the project to civic politicians. Coun. Dylan Kruger said he is very impressed with the development. “Just seeing where the site is coming – even in the last few months and the beautiful colour pallet that has come on, the design of these fantastic homes is very exciting,” he said. “This is a great model for what we are trying to achieve with liveable communities.” Coun. Lois Jackson called the development a successful marriage between development and the farming community. “Sean, you are creating something that is very unique,” she said. “It is historic, memorable, something that Delta will be proud of for many, many years. I want you to be proud of what you have accomplished because I am.”

Five months of regular swims at Boundary Bay will culminate the 2020 Ocean Challenge on Sunday that will see seven teens attempt to swim from Crescent Beach to the Boundary Bay boat ramp.

Teens to swim across bay 2020 Ocean Challenge will be a 12-kilometre trek from Crescent Beach MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

While most of their friends were still in the comfort of their warm beds, seven keen teenagers were in the waters of Boundary Bay at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday preparing for one of the biggest swims of their lives. This weekend, Naomi Cole (17) Isabel Rapier (15), Yinan Zhu (15), Kelly Qi (12), Caitlyn Fowler (12), Calvin Slinn (17) and Jeremy Slinn (14) will culminate months of open water training with the “2020 Ocean Challenge” that will see them swim from Crescent Beach in South Surrey to the Boundary Bay boat launch near the Canada/U.S. border. The 12.2 kilometre trek should take between three to five hours, depending on their age and ability. “People have been asking me if I am excited to be going back to school or that it’s been pushed back and I tell them all that I’m thinking about is this Sunday,” laughed Cole, who is going into Grade 12 at South Delta Secondary and came up with the idea of Ocean Challenge. “I don’t know if I’m nervous about it, but definitely excited.”

Sunday’s swim concludes five months of open water training. All the participants are members of the Winksill Dolphins Swim Club and typically compete at the national and provincial levels. When the Winskill Aquatic Centre was closed back in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these dedicated athletes needed to fill a significant void in their lives. Some of them have competed in open water events and that’s how the idea of swimming in Boundary Bay started. By early April, they bravely entered the chilly waters in wet suits and began getting comfortable with their new environment. They have steadily built up their endurance while under the watchful eye of dedicated and supportive parents who are overseeing the swims in

kayaks and on paddle boards. The Dolphins swim club is not involved at all. “May was really hard for them because there was a lot of jelly fish and we are talking about a lot,” smiled parent Helen Wiacek. “There were a few stings and a little fear but they just kept going. One of the dads on paddleboard were looking out for them. There have been logs too and patches of seaweed they had to avoid. “On Mother’s Day around 7 a.m. out past the (one mile marker) there was a pod of grey whales that we could see and hear them spouting.” Since the opening of the Ladner outdoor pool in July, training has been split between the two locations with the swim-

mers at Boundary Bay every other day. High tide is essential to make those sessions possible, which has led to a lot of early morning outings. They have been comfortably swimming as far as four kilometres out and back consecutive times so the shore-to-shore distance shouldn’t be a problem. However, they will be entering unknown water when they depart from Crescent Beach. The kids have got advice on open water swimming from where they can during the pandemic including a coach from a club based in Vancouver. “I attended an online open water conference and a coach came down to see us a couple of times who has swam Georgia Strait and the English Channel so that was very cool,” added Rapier, who has also done her own version of Ironman training over a seven-day period near her Tsawwassen home. The swimmers will be returning to their regular Dolphins club training at Winskill later this month, but this may not be only chapter of the Ocean Challenge. “Who knows if there’s not COVID-19 maybe we can come back here and make it an even bigger event,” added Wiacek.

Ladner resident celebrates 106th birthday in COVID-19 friendly style

Augustine House’s eldest resident was greeted by family members for a drive-by parade MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

Ila Lundy’s family made sure her 106th birthday was as special as it could be. Augustine House’s eldest resident was greeted by family members Thursday afternoon during a drive-by parade at the front entrance of the Arthur Drive complex. Lundy then enjoyed an in-house celebration with other residents. It couldn’t match last year’s face-to-face reception in the dining room, but it was the best that could be done given the strict COVID-19 safety measures that are in place.

“It’s certainly not what it was, but we are liaising with families to make it a meaningful family event while still keeping everyone safe. That’s our bottom line,” explained Augustine House Executive Director Jackie Reiners. “Since the pandemic started we have had a couple milestone events. The standard seems to be the driveby birthday. People will decorate their cars and stop and talk from the car at a proper social distance. “We are just trying to navigate within the rules and regulations given from the provincial ministry and Fraser Health while making the

resident feel it is their special day.” Reiners noted Lundy is going through her second world-wide pandemic having been a toddler during the Spanish Flu (1918-20). She moved to Augustine House in 2015. She said a year ago how she loves living in the building and has met some great friends. “Augustine House is just a wonderful place. If you are going to go anywhere for an old age place, I would say this is way above anything else and there are very nice people here,” she said. As to her years of longevity, she said, “I didn’t drink Coca-Cola, I didn’t

Pen pal exchange evolves into close friendship MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

What began as a pen pal exchange has evolved into one of the biggest supporters of Emma Tomlinson’s promising ballet career. It was back in April when a community pen pal project was launched for residents of The Wexford. The seniors’ residence in Tsawwassen was under strict COVID-19 lockdown measures at the time. The response proved to be overwhelming. “It was incredible. We had hundreds of emails, including some from Europe and South America,” recalled Wexford recreational assistant and project organizer John Meier. “I think people Google searched for pen pals in Canada and that article came up. The most exciting one of all of them was

Karel and Emma. “We have close to 70 suites here and I tried to place the letters with the right people to make it a good fit. When someone saw Emma’s letter they said ‘you have to talk Karel about this.’” Tomlinson, 14, was encouraged by her parents to write a letter about herself and her passion for ballet. The South Delta Secondary student was stuck at home with her school closed and dance classes cancelled during the height of the pandemic. Her submission ended up with Karel Ley whose close lifelong friend happens to be one of Canada’s most accomplished ballerinas of her generation. Lynn Seymour was the same age as Tomlinson when she earned a scholarship to the Sadler Wells Ballet School in

London. She went on to be a principal dancer with The Royal Ballet, a world renowned classical ballet company. Ironically, for three straight years, Tomlinson had travelled to London to attend Royal Ballet School’s White Lodge summer intensive program where she earned two achievement awards and direct entry for what turned out to be a postponed 2020 visit. From the initial letters, Tomlinson and Ley began to write each other regularly and exchange photos too. “It’s pretty cool. I have lots of dance friends but (Karel and I) are from different generations and the fact that we have so much in common is great,” said Tomlinson. Ley eventually moved to London and lived with Seymour as a nanny to look after her two chil-

Horsing Around in Delta Safety Tips Around Horses

Horses are beautiful, large and powerful animals. Unpredictable and awe-inspiring, horses require constant care, and those who interact with horses should know how to act around horses. Understanding horses can reduce your risk of injury. Falling off of a horse can be injurious, injury can also occur during routine daily horse chores such as feeding, grooming and tacking. Pain can cause any animal to act out of character. Check the horse for injuries or soft spots before grooming. According to Blue Cross for Pets, horses should be tied up when they are being groomed or tacked-up, even if they are in a stable. Maintain a safe position when working around horses. For example, never stand directly in front of or behind a horse, which can easily injure you with one kick of its leg. Horses have amazing peripheral vision but two blind spots: One is directly in front of his nose, the other is behind the tail. Horses will not be able to see you if you approach in their blind spots. The safest place to stand is beside your horses shoulder where you can see each other. Watch your ropes. Do not loop lead ropes or reins around your hands or other body parts. If the horse pulls away or startles and darts, your body can become trapped. When giving food or treats to a horse, do so from a feeding trough or bucket. A horse may not mean to bite, but when excited about treats he could mistake fingers for food. A substantial shoe or boot will protect your feet against trampling and give you adequate traction. Less experienced riders can benefit from the training and advice of more experienced riders.

sons with Seymour after the pair were inspired by a Theater Under the Stars production at Stanley Park. “She had twins and was desperate for a nanny. She begged me to come over. I always wanted to go to London.” Ley sees a bright future for Tomlinson who will

be training full-time with the Goh Ballet Academy in Vancouver starting this month, after getting her start with Deas Island Dance 10 years ago. Tomlinson inspires to dance in Europe one day and hopes to land with a professional school in the next couple of years.

It truly became a family run business for a while with my husband and 3 kids helping so that we could continue to fulfill the growing demand for our flowers at a time when people felt isolated and cut off from friends and family. How much do you know about God? Maybe quite a lot. You may have read the Bible, memorized the creeds, read volumes of theology. The truth is, though, if you don’t know the love of God, you don’t know God. Jesus is the embodiment and ultimate expression of God’s love. The love of God poured out upon the world through Jesus is what the whole story of the Bible is about, summarized in its most famous passage. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not parish but may have eternal life.” (John

ancient Israel. Even when human beings put Jesus to death on the cross, God did not reject us. In fact, God used this horrible event to forgive us, and gift us with eternal life. God loves you! You may believe that you have sinned too much and made too many mistakes for God to love you. Think again. Consider the words of St. Paul: “The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I am the foremost.” (1 Timothy 1: 15). Paul came to know the love of God first-hand, and so can you!

Labour Day

Giving thanks to workers on Labour Day ANDREW MERCIER

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

As we prepare to celebrate Labour Day 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought into laser focus the vital role that workers play in keeping us safe. In Canada, the Labour Day statutory holiday was the result of an 1886 Royal Commission that looked at ways to ease conflicts between labour and capital. It was a difficult time for workers. Unions had only been legal for 15 years and it was common for workers to spend 12 hours a day, six days a week doing their job. The commission made many recommendations that would have improved worker safety and reduced workplace fatalities, but the proclamation of a new holiday to honour workers was

the only one accepted. From health-care workers, custodians and child care providers to grocery clerks, construction workers and bus drivers, workers are the reason B.C. has been able to flatten the curve. Most people understand these workers to be essential and agree they should be compensated accordingly. A recent poll by Community Savings Credit Union showed that 88 per cent of British Columbians support permanent “levelled up” pay for long-term care workers. CSCU is hoping to build on this public support and has initiated the 7:01 Movement to lobby for better pay and benefits for the workers who take care of some of the most vulnerable people in society. The pandemic has also revealed deficiencies in

working conditions, with construction providing some of the most notorious examples of inadequate sanitation. In the pandemic’s early days, we heard from construction workers across the province who believed they were putting their lives at risk going to work. Some sent us photos and videos to help tell their stories: these showed crowds of workers failing to physically distance, a garden hose attached to a piece of wood as a washing station, dirty portable toilets void of either hand sanitizer or toilet paper, workers standing shoulder to shoulder in corridors and elevators. These are unacceptable conditions, pandemic or no pandemic. In fact, B.C. has excellent occupational health and safety regula-

tions on the books that already require workers be provided sufficient sanitation facilities. The problem was that no one was enforcing them. Our calls for WorkSafeBC to enforce the regulations resulted in the establishment of a special inspectional initiative with a focus on construction. Prior to the start of the pandemic, 40 per cent of the agency’s officers were already dedicated to the construction sector, including more than 70 officers exclusively working with employers and contractors to ensure they fulfilled their obligations to provide safe and healthy workplaces. By the third week of March, however, almost all of WorkSafeBC’s more than 300 officers were focused on COVID-19 inspections, including 120 dedicated entirely

to construction. By July 31, these officers had conducted more than 2,800 COVID-19-related inspections of construction sites and issued 85 compliance orders. To put that into perspective, only the manufacturing (102) and service (146) sectors were issued more orders. To say sanitation in the construction sector is an issue is an understatement, and that’s why we’re also calling for a public inquiry into health, safety and sanitation practices in the sector. These workers are building our province – the roads we drive on, the homes we live in, the buildings where we work, our schools and hospitals. They don’t deserve the second-class treatment they’ve been getting. So this year on Labour

Day, let us recommit ourselves to keeping the workers safe who keep us safe, and give thanks for all they do, every day. Thanks to the health care workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the grocery store workers ensuring we have food and other supplies necessary to stay safe at home. Thanks to the transportation workers delivering those goods. Thanks to the construction workers building and maintaining vital infrastructure. And thanks to all the other thousands of essential workers who continue to help our province fight this deadly pandemic. Andrew Mercier is the executive director of the 35,000-member BC Building Trades Council.

Labour Day

The future cannot be predicted, but it can be created STEPHANIE SMITH

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

So far, 2020 has been a year of upheaval and uncertainty that has many of us questioning what the future will look like for ourselves, our families, and our society. It’s also been a year in which working people have shown time and again that we have the power to create a society that is stronger, safer, and more prosperous through solidarity, resilience, and shared values like dignity and respect; equality and fairness; social justice and opportunity for all. That power and those values are the core of what Labour Day is, and has always been, about: the belief shared by union activists that we have the ability and the obligation to build a better future not just for ourselves but for all working people.

As J.S. Woodsworth famously said “what we desire for ourselves, we wish for all.” COVID-19 has not broken us, but it has revealed plenty that is broken about how our society works and who it works for. The fact is that the BCGEU and our 80,000plus members across the province were working on many of these issues long before the pandemic hit: from addressing the deep fissures in the long term care system that put the lives of seniors, elders, and workers at risk; to advocating for safe supply and other evidencebased approaches to the overdose crisis; to working for affordable, accessible housing options for all British Columbians; to fighting for a universal, publicly funded child care system; to advancing reconciliation and an end

to racism and discrimination in families, workplaces, and communities. I’m proud of that work and of every BCGEU member who has driven our union to get involved and stay involved in these critical issues. The first Monday in September will look a little different this year as union activists plan pandemic-safe ways to come together, but Labour Day will still be Labour Day: an opportunity for union activists to celebrate our history, reaffirm our values, and dream with our eyes open about the future we want to create, battles yet to be fought, values yet to be realized, workers yet to be organized. As we move forward through whatever comes next for our society, the BCGEU and our partners throughout the labour and social justice communities will

be front and centre continuing the work to fix what’s broken and create a better future. And this Labour Day I’m full of optimism for what we can achieve together. So, what can you do? * Follow public health guidance on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep your friends, family, co-workers, and community safe. * Support working people in your community by making sure the businesses you deal with every day reflect your values and are contributing to the future you want to create. * Join a union. Visit the BCGEU’s website to find out how joining a union could benefit you or someone you love. Labour Day

Let’s celebrate working people LAIRD CRONK SUSSANNE SKIDMORE

Contributing writers

This Labour Day, you won’t see the big parades, rallies and parties we usually have. Instead it’s small, carefully-distanced backyard get-togethers and onscreen virtual celebrations. But there’s a deeper change that’s happening. This year has reminded us just how much our province relies on working people: to keep our economy going, to provide the necessities of life, to deliver the services families need. Many of the lowestpaid workers in the most precarious jobs in B.C. are finally getting some long-overdue recognition. And we’ve stopped seeing workplace safety as something that only

affects individual workers, and started recognizing it for what it is: a vital underpinning of public health. What’s more, we’re discovering there’s a lot more we can do to make life better for everyone. Governments have come together with dramatic action like supporting the incomes of laid-off workers, protecting vulnerable British Columbians with increases to disability and income assistance rates, helping renters, subsidizing wages, investing in health care and education, improving employment standards and workplace safety, and even making the first moves toward paid sick leave. A lot of this has happened because B.C. has the benefit of a provincial government that listens to working people. But

we’ve had something else on our side: a labour movement backed by working people across B.C. And there’s every reason to believe that movement is gaining strength. There’s new momentum for organizing as the pandemic shows working people that our lives as well as our livelihoods are on the line, as we press for safer workplaces, better working conditions and a fairer deal. That’s doubly important now, because we’ve learned something else in the past several months. COVID-19 exposed deep gaps in our province, and how many people have been sold short by B.C.’s economy. And those gaps and inequities were vulnerabilities the virus exploited, leaving us all more exposed and at risk.

But the way we’ve responded, as communities and through our governments, shows us we don’t have to just accept those gaps and recreate those inequities. As much as 2020 has been about shutting down, it’s also increasingly about opening up

— that is, opening up possibilities for positive, lasting changes. That’s what’s really worth celebrating this year: this new sense of possibility and potential in the strength we have together. We can regain what we had — but we can also rebuild something stron-

ger and fairer. We can build stronger, more resilient communities that are better able to grapple with big challenges. Laird Cronk is the president of the BC Federation of Labour while Sussanne Skidmore is SecretaryTreasurer.

Labour Day COVID-19 is a time to rewrite our story SUSAN YAO

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

As a kid I was so excited by my new pencils, notebooks and lunch kit. That old butterfly feeling in my stomach: anxiety mixed with fervour to get back — to friends, routines, stuff to do! Wondering about the upcoming return to school? Excited? Anxious? Both? Not anxious —by all appearances from the latest BC Government ad — is our Public Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry. A 30 second ad from the B.C. Government shows a happy classroom where students can —presumably — wash hands without rushing or — apparently — a line of others waiting behind them. Images of good fun hanging from monkey bars or sitting in generously spaced desks — and only one masked face in the crowd! This ad, however,

doesn’t reflect the reality of classes in B.C. COVID-19 has clarified what’s important for functioning societies: the workers! Part of the picture in ways we didn’t always appreciate is work that sustains our most basic needs: food, shelter, healthcare, safety, community. Educators are part of that and no surprise that return to school should be so fervently discussed on social media, in the news and in safely physicallydistanced backyard gatherings. (For those privileged enough to have that.) “What we desire for ourselves, we wish for all,” Canadian social activist J.S. Woodsworth proclaimed once upon a time. This Labour Day weekend, we reflect on gains made by organized labour making workplaces equitable and

safe. Teachers want to be there for students, but need safe workplaces. What teachers want — for themselves and students — is safety: the wearing of masks, the ability for physical-distancing via smaller class sizes, remote options for those with chronic health issues. The pandemic reality underscores how benefits such as sick leave, achieved through collective bargaining structures of the labour movement, benefit the larger society. This current crisis is time to rewrite our story and bring everyone to a new and better future — where basic needs are met and everyone can achieve their potential. There are limits to what individuals can do, but as a collective these limitations can be overcome. All of us, together! Susan Yao is president of the Delta Teachers’ Association

Labour Day

A Labour Day unlike any other PAUL FAORO

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

We can’t be together this Labour Day — but we’re still in this together Labour Day has always been one of my favourite days of the year. As the heat of summer begins to fade and the chill of fall approaches, Labour Day offers one more opportunity to get together with friends and family. And of course it gives working people an opportunity to come together to reflect on — and celebrate — the progress that unions have made for all working people. It might sound corny, but community Labour Day events bring the full spectrum of the union movement together in one place like no other annual event, and they give us time to appreciate

our shared values. I’m going to miss that side of Labour Day this year, as are we all. COVID-19 obviously means we can’t have big events this year, but I’m hopeful it won’t stop us from remembering the real meaning of Labour Day. The meaning of Labour Day speaks as much to our collective response to COVID-19 as it does to the traditions of the labour movement. Our movement is based on the simple principle of solidarity — if we act to benefit others, we also benefit ourselves. Following public health guidelines isn’t just to protect ourselves, it’s to protect people we don’t even know. If that’s not solidarity, I don’t know what is. Overall, the pandemic

has heightened the importance of public services and the workers who provide them. From the tremendous leadership and guidance from Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry and her team, to the dedicated, life-saving workers in our healthcare system, and to the transit workers who kept the system moving, good public services have helped fight the virus. The pandemic also shone a bright light on private sector workers whose work often went unheralded and poorly compensated; grocery store employees, delivery drivers, and service sector workers, to name just a few. On behalf of our provincial executive board I want to take this opportunity to thank the more than 100,000 members of

CUPE BC for everything they’ve done to help our province get through this pandemic. And I want to thank them in advance for all the work they will be doing to help our province recover and rebuild. We say this a lot in CUPE, but never has it been more relevant than today: strong public services build strong communities. On Labour Day let’s spend some time remembering the unifying spirit that became so much a part of our lives in the spring. The success of B.C.’s economic recovery is going to depend on workers, just as our successful fight against the pandemic has depended on workers. Whether public or private sector, unionized or not, it’s workers who will dig us out of this pandemic.

Paul Faoro This isn’t going to be like any other Labour Day. These times aren’t like any other. This long weekend, to paraphrase

A lot of work went into Labour Day. For more than a century, the union presence in BC has improved the lives of all working people. And since 1931, IUOE Local 115 is proud to have been a part of that presence, advocating for workers’ rights in British Columbia.

Fall is just around the corner. A time of year when we say good-bye to lazy summer days and prepare for a season that often brings the promise of new beginnings, like connecting with friends we haven’t seen throughout the summer, or returning to work and school routines. But this fall is different. We are six months into the COVID-19 pandemic and there are still many questions about its continued impact on our daily lives and the “new normal” we’ve all had to adapt to. Everyone has been impacted by this pandemic. Whether it’s parents trying to decide whether to send their children to school, workers trying to figure out their next steps after having been laid off or let go

from jobs, and tragically, those families of loved ones who have lost their lives to COVID-19. It was early spring when nurses rose to the challenge to care for British Columbians amidst the global pandemic. Throughout the summer we saw active case numbers drop substantially and elective surgeries resume. For a while we ‘flattened the curve.” Now, nurses and all health care professionals are monitoring the situation closely as daily active cases continue to rise in B.C., and other countries begin to experience ‘a second wave.’ From the beginning, BCNU’s primary focus has been the health and safety of nurses, ensuring they have ready access to the personal protective equipment (PPE) they require such as N95 respirators, gowns,

gloves and face shields. Unfortunately, I continue to hear distressing reports from across the province of nurses who are unable to effectively access the equipment that is critical to help control the spread of this virus. Whether its employers locking up PPE in an attempt to ration the products or nurses being told they must wear the same surgical mask or respirator and eye protection for an entire shift, nurses continue to face obstacles when trying to stay safe on the job. Navigating the unknowns that lie ahead will take dedication and a commitment from all of us, and BCNU will continue our push for safe patient care and safe worksites for all nurses in every part of the province. Christine Sorensen is president of the BC Nurses’ Union

Curl BC honours juniors

A rink that features a pair of standouts from the Tunnel Town Curling Club has earned a prestigious award from Curl BC thanks to an outstanding 2020 season. Team Taylor has been named U21 Team of the Year by the sport’s provincial organization. The rink includes Meredith Cole and Keira McCoy, both South Delta Secondary students. They are joined by the Taylor sisters, Jensen and Chelsea. The girls are coached by Christopher Summers and they split their practice time between the Royal City Curling Club and Tunnel Town. Team Taylor proved that they can punch above their weight when they aged up to finish tied with the best record after round robin play and took the silver medal at the U21 provincials back in January. Participation in other sports has added to their physical conditioning and team sportsmanship. Jensen plays high school girls’ ice hockey, Keira plays AAA field hockey and won a bronze medal in high school provincials with South Delta. Chelsea is also a competitive figure skater, completing Skate Canada Gold Level Dances. Despite their hectic schedules, the girls also found the time to assist with Learn to Curl events and volunteer for various things at their clubs.

Tsawwassen’s Hana Anderson earns scholarship deal to Pac-12 school MARK BOOTH

Hana Anderson is taking her promising rowing career to the picturesque Snake River Canyon. The Delta Deas Rowing Club member and 2020 South Delta Secondary graduate has earned a lucrative scholarship deal to Washington State University. The Cougars make their home at the Wawawai Landing on the Snake River, considered one of most scenic courses among NCAA Division One rowing schools. Anderson was initially considering programs at Queen’s University and UBC. That all changed when she was approached by WSU head coach Jane Lariviere at the 2019 RCA National Rowing Championships last September in Burnaby. The dialogue continued until she made an official visit to the Pullman campus on Halloween weekend. “It was a four-day visit where I toured the university, went to a practice to see how the team worked and hung out with them that evening,” recalled Anderson. “I just loved the campus. I kind of knew I would like to go to

a smaller university.” Anderson was impressed but didn’t want to rule out her other options just yet. She returned from a trip to Queens in Kingston, ON and was given an additional week, beyond the national signing day in the U.S., to make her final decision. “(WSU) was definitely up there, as was Queens,” she continued. “I spent some time on the phone with my (DDRC) coaches to talk about both. It came down to the ability to row at the NCAA Division One level. It’s a once in a lifetime amazing experience. I decided just to take the chance and go for it. “The first couple of years I would say I was a little more casual about rowing then in my Grade 10 year. I was friends with some of the senior rowers and they started going off to Canadian schools. One of my training partners when I was Grade 11 was considering the States and it made me kind of think about it and how it would be a cool option to pursue.” Anderson’s deal will cover about 75 percent of her tuition costs. She has additional academic scholarships and there is an opportunity to improve her WSU funding to

full-ride status based on her overall performance moving forward. WSU’s fall semester classes are online only. As an international student, Anderson is taking advantage by remaining at her Tsawwassen home and corresponding with the Cougars coaching staff for training that will be done at DDRC facilities. The plan now is to head to Pullman in January. “Gives me a lot of comfort in the school I’m going to. I know they are going to take care of us when we get down there,” Anderson continued. “The spring is the main season with usually a training camp in January. The fall is your bulking season where you are doing as much training as you can and getting fast as possible.” After focusing mostly on doubles and sculling in the last couple of years, Anderson will be shifting to four and eight boats. “I did a lot of fours last spring season and I loved them. Eights are really fun because you can get them moving fast,” she added. “I really like sweeping comparing to sculling so I’m really looking forward to that chapter. Just focusing on that technique.”

Delta Gymnastics ready for fall programs MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s appropriately been a balancing act for Delta Gymnastics as the long-running non-profit society has welcomed back young athletes while following strict COVID-19 safety measures. The pandemic hit the 45-year-old Ladner-based club hard back in March. The impressive facility was closed for about three months. The 2020 Delta Invitational, the club’s biggest fundraising event of the year, was cancelled, as was the opportunity to host the Western Canadian Championships. The complete shutdown resulted in temporary layoffs for all 55 staff members. The club was finally allowed to reopen in mid-June with a capacity of no more than 50 under phase two of Gymnastics BC’s re-start plan. Four returned to oversee the limited operations. They include Sharon Gillespie (business manager), Jen Dober (technical director) and Jen Watts (senior program director). Since then, small groups of competitive gymnasts have returned for daily training, up to three hours in duration.

With no access to the public and a variety of COVID-19 safety measures in place, Delta Gymnastics have been running limited summer sessions for the past 10 weeks since re-opening in mid-June. Equipment is sanitized throughout the sessions as the groups move to different parts of the gym. A thorough cleaning is then done when the session has concluded. Access to the facility is limited and the parents viewing upstairs is closed for now. The club was also able to run limited

summer camp rooms with 10 participants. Normally those numbers ranged from 24 to 36. “We are hoping to build up everyone’s confidence of what we have done through the summer. Our system has proven to be very safe and it’s something we are very proud of,” said Dober.

“We have had no issues and we have been doing this for 10 weeks. We are ready to do more as soon as we are allowed by viaSport and Gymnastics BC.” “The benefits for the kids have been huge,” added Watts. “They were in quarantine for so long and not able to get out and do anything.” Registration is now underway for the fall season that will have its limitations but is still accommodating a wide range of age and skill groups, from 18-months old to seniors. “We are also doing a couple of different things in the fall to make our classes more accessible,” added Dober. “There is the option of just two months at a time where normally a program would be a year-long.” The club is also busy brainstorming to come up with different fundraising ideas to replace past pre-COVID-19 events, although the popular Chocolate Drive is still a go. “We’re trying to find different ways to fundraise amid COVID-19,” said Gillespie. “We are having to think outside of the box.” For more information on Delta Gymnastics fall programs visit the club’s website www.deltagymnastics.com.

REMEMBRANCES IN MEMORIAM

OBITUARIES .

In Memory Of .

FEDORUK, Elizabeth (Betty) Graham (nee Farrell) May 6, 1924 – August 24, 2020 It is with a heavy heart my sisters and I announce the passing of our Mum, Betty Fedoruk.

Mark Robert Saunders July 18, 1991 - September 5, 2017 Mark, 3 years have come and gone since you left us far, far too early. A lot has changed in these past years, but our love for you will never. You live on in our hearts and our memories, which we will all cherish forever, and those shall never fade. We miss you so much. Until we meet again. Love, Your Family.

Our Mum was welcomed into the world by her parents Henry and Susan (Blair) Farrell along with her sisters Kathleen and Lauretta on May 6, 1924. She was raised in the small farming community of Kincardine, Ontario. She is survived by her daughters Judy Smith, Sue Cambrey (Dennis), Stephanie Fedoruk and daughter-in-law Jo-Ann Fedoruk. 8 grandchildren, Scott Kolbeins (Nancy), Sandy Kolbeins (Angela), Glenn Fedoruk, Dean Fedoruk (Tasha), Aaron Cambrey, Farrell Cambrey, Katrina MacDonald and Jacob MacDonald and 8 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by her husband Stephen Fedoruk, son, William (Bill) Fedoruk, great-granddaughter Alexandra Kolbeins, sisters Kay Hutchings and Lauretta Elms and sister-in-law Lee Heddy. A truly modern woman, Mum left Ontario on her own in 1949 and travelled west to B.C., not knowing anyone. A trained nurse Mum acquired a job at Essondale Hospital in New Westminster.

DERKSEN, Abram George. August 28, 2020 Abe passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord on August 28, 2020, in Delta, BC, at the age of 99. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Agnes; and his daughter, Linda (Mark). He is survived by three daughters, Sharon, Diane, and Darlene (Rick); his grandchildren, Melissa (Andrew), Heather (Trevor), Matthew, and Lisa (Jesse); and two great−grandchildren, Carmen and Zion. A graveside service will be held at Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby on Saturday, September 5, 2020. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Delta View for their loving care over the past 9 years.

Mum met our Dad, Steve Fedoruk, on an outing with friends at the Branch 5 Legion, in Richmond. They courted a few years and they were married on December 18, 1958. Upon her marriage, Mum left Essondale to become a full-time wife, homemaker and a step-mum to Judy and Bill. In 1960, daughter Sue was born. In 1962 they decided to build a home on Ackroyd Road and moved in shortly after the birth of their second daughter Stephanie in 1963. Our parents lived on Ackroyd Road until 1988, moving to Eperson Road, then to their final home together on Ferry Road in Ladner. Dad passed away June 1996.

OBITUARIES

In 1998 Mum sold the house and purchased her condo. From here, her travelling began, mostly cruising with our Dad’s sister Lee and cousin Anne Beaver. In 1998 Mum sold her condo and moved to Augustine House and enjoyed all the services they could provide for her there. In her 90th year, still living independently we decided to move her to Campbell River where she resided at Berwick by the Sea to watch the cruise ships from her ocean view suite. In January 2019, still doing her best to be her independent self, but realizing she need just a little more help she moved to Evergreen Seniors Home. There she thoroughly enjoyed all they had to offer and her new found friendships with all the Evergreen staff. Our Mum passed peacefully on August 24th. Our Mum, as she had done all her life, charted her own course. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at Evergreen Seniors Home for their respect and compassionate care, they went above and beyond and we are forever grateful. There will be a celebration of life in the spring, May 2021. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SPCA or to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be left for the family at: campbellriverfunerals.com

After completing his 5-year term in the Navy, they moved to Edmonton. They spent several years on the Prairies and returned to the west coast in 1967. The family settled in Tsawwassen. Dave was very active in the community, including coaching football and umping baseball for many years. He was very involved with Sacred Heart Parish and was frequently seen making many, many pancakes at the monthly Pancake Breakfasts. He was heavily involved in the Knights of Columbus, and he was also one of the original directors of the Augustine House. The last 5 years have not been easy for him as he battled Alzheimer’s. Dave received wonderful care from Dr. Ljiljana Kordic as well as the wonderful staff from Delta Hospital. His final 4 1/2 years were under the incredible care of the staff from Delta View Care Home. After many months of declining health, Jim passed on peacefully with his beloved wife of 59 years, Yvonne and his children by his side at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner. James (Jim) was born on June 20th, 1941 in Kelowna, BC, to Louis and Anna Costa. The youngest of 4 children, Jim grew up in Kelowna and spent his youth on the family apple orchard. Jim started his career as a hair stylist at Raymond’s Salon in Oakridge Mall, in Vancouver. After hair dressing, he worked in sales and finished his career as a machinist. He was a great husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend to many. His favourite people called him Papa and his granddaughters were the apples of his eye. SAWATZKY, Agnes A. April 11, 1933 − August 9, 2020 On Sunday, August 9, 2020, Agnes peacefully passed away into the arms of her Lord, to be reunited with her beloved John (2016), at the age of 87, while in residence at the White Rock Seniors Village. She moved with her family to Sardis, BC, in her mid−teens, where she eventually met and married John in 1951. As a loving housewife, mother, and grandmother, she so very much enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening for her family, and was always a very generous hostess whenever anyone dropped by. When John retired, they travelled across Canada and the northern US in their RV, plus they also got to spend lots of quality time with their precious grandchildren. She loved to read and listen to music, especially the old German Hymns, which were playing when she was called Home in her sleep. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the White Rock Seniors Village for their special warmth, loving−kindness, and gentle care that they have given Agnes over the past 4 years in resident care.
