Teens swim across Boundary Bay

DAVID COLE PHOTO

The 2020 Ocean Challenge saw seven local teens swim across Boundary Bay under ideal conditions on Sunday morning. The 12-kilometre trek from Crescent Beach culminated five months of open water training at Centennial Beach. The wife of Delta police Chief Neil Dubord will not be charged following an investigation into an alleged altercation near the Dubord’s property on Centennial Beach in June. The BC Prosecution Service announced last week that rather than charges, Lorraine Dubord will face alternative measures. “The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) can confirm that this

matter has been referred to BC Corrections for consideration of an “alternative measures” resolution,” said spokesperson Dan McLaughlin. “If the person alleged to have committed an offence in this case enters into and successfully completes an Alternative Measures agreement there will be no prosecution. Under the terms of this policy, subject to certain limitations, Crown Counsel are encouraged to consider alternative measures in every case where the successful comple-

tion of an alternative measures program can achieve the most important objectives of a court prosecution.” The alleged incident took place on June 6 in which Richmond teacher and Surrey resident Kiran Sidhu was making her way back to her parked car after a sociallydistanced picnic with friends at Centennial Beach in Boundary Bay. Unfamiliar with the beach area, and with the tide coming in, Sidhu said she was forced to

climb onto rocks, which are on public property, to get to where her car was parked. As Sidhu walked across the rocks, she said Dubord yelled at her over the fence from her back yard to get down, but with the tide coming in, Sidhu said she was unable to do so. Both Dubord and Sidhu exchanged words and Dubord left their altercation only to return moments later where she allegedly sprayed Sidhu with a garden hose. Surrey RCMP investigated

the incident and recommended charges against Dubord of one count of uttering threats for allegedly threatening to push Sidhu off the rocks and one count of assault for allegedly spraying her with the hose, Sidhu told the Optimist. The RCMP investigation was initiated after Sidhu was not happy with how DPD handled her case after she logged a formal complaint with the department. ALTERNATIVE: see Page 3

A different look to back to school SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Schools are going to look different this year, schedules are going to be different and classrooms are going to be different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s what Education Minister Rob Fleming recently noted as Delta students head back to the classroom today (Thursday) for two days of safety orientation, as well as finding out who will be in their learning groups. One Delta elementary principal, in a letter to parents, explained that in previous years, students returned to last year’s class in order for final organizations and changes to take place. This year that cannot happen as students need to be placed in their permanent learning cohorts right away. Another change students may notice is that some teachers will decide to go by their first names with students. Saying schools are the best places for students, Fleming in an open letter stressed there is no substitute for in-class learning and, more than that, there’s unintended negative consequences when children are not in school for extended periods of time.

SANDOR GYARMATI PHOTO

Delta students Peyton, Alexander and Summer Lee wearing masks at their local elementary school, but masks are currently not mandatory in the classroom.

Despite B.C.’s and Canada’s daily COVID-19 case numbers increasing, the provincial government and Delta School District continue to reassure parents of their commitment to the health and safety of students and staff.

The Education Ministry last week announced that additional funding from the federal government will go to schools to expand health and safety measures, the purchase of more personal protective equipment and increasing capacity for

remote learning. For now, the only option for Delta parents is to send their kids to school for in-class instruction, keep them out for a year for home schooling or using the Home Quest program. Fleming also noted school districts are reporting the majority of students are heading back to the classroom. For those who are not, he’s directed school districts to be flexible and work with families to provide remote options that keep children connected to their school community. The Delta School District last week on its website announced transition plans would be available, if needed, but parents must contact their school principals directly if this is an option they would like to explore. The opposition B.C. Liberals have been critical of the New Democrat government’s backto-school plan, saying the province cannot guarantee students will be able to learn in a safe and physically-distanced environment. Teachers have also expressed concern about not having the ability to have more physical distance in classrooms, and also calling on the government for a more stringent mask policy.

Alternative measures means there is no prosecution

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “I spoke with Crown and they informed me, as well as the Dubords, that they are not pursuing charges but they are recommending the alternative measures process,” she said. Sidhu said Crown explained the process very well, saying that even if they went ahead with charges it would have likely resulted in an absolute or con-

ditional discharge. “I get some input here potentially, so that is never a bad thing to involve the victim in the process,” she said. “She will be held accountable in some way, but I’m also disappointed even more so with the Delta police. When I first reported it, it went nowhere. The RCMP found two charges that they thought were strong enough

for Crown to consider. Delta didn’t even go there, so that is so shady to me. “I feel validated in that Crown and RCMP kind of validated that this thing that happened to me was assault.” The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner is still investigating misconduct allegations related to how the DPD handled the case.

Last Friday morning, the Delta Police Board issued a brief statement on the matter. “There are still a number of related processes ongoing,” said Mayor George Harvie and Police Board Chair. “The Board will refrain from commenting until all related matters have concluded. We will provide further updates at the appropriate time as those matters proceed.”

The Delta school district is urging parents of school students to have them refrain from taking part in “Hell Night” this week. Hell Night has become an annual alcohol-fueled rite-of-passage that sees groups of roving Delta teens spend the first night of the new school year partying throughout the community, which often results in acts of vandalism to city and school property. In a letter to parents and Grade 12 students, South Delta Secondary principal Terry Ainge, Delta Secondary principal John Pavao and district superintendent Doug Sheppard said they’ve already been hearing rumours of a Grade 12 Hell Night, something bad enough with the COVID-19 pandemic now also a factor. “Frequently, Hell Night creates significant conflict

with community members, as large noisy gatherings occur in public spaces, forcing encounters with Delta Police and the City of Delta, and putting a significant drain on their time and resources. This year, with the global pandemic we are very concerned that this unsanctioned activity will heighten the feelings of fear, uncertainty and risk that many in our community are already struggling with right now. The latest public health data shows that cases of COVID-19 are on the increase in the Lower Mainland, particularly among younger people as a direct result of socializing and partying. Clearly this is not the time for large groups of young people to be gathering in their local communities for such an unwelcome and unhealthy tradition,” they warned. The district also notes that in addition to dividing the community, students might not appre-

ciate how Hell Night divides grad classes, fueling division and distrust by needlessly creating conflict between class members who become angry, embarrassed and resentful towards those who damage the reputation of their school. “Hell Night also damages the relationships between students and teachers and school administration. The ramifications of Hell Night create an ill-timed and unnecessary conflict at the beginning of the school year that impacts relationships, feelings of trust and future good will,” they said. Hell Night also creates conflict between students and their parents, the district said, adding it’s a tradition everyone can live without. Last year’s Hell Night, according to the City of Delta, saw significant damage at area schools as well as the Ladner skate park and the gymnastics society.

Patio policy provides needed business boost SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta’s new patio policy, allowing more outdoor seating, has been a much-needed boost in difficult times. That’s what Darren Gates, owner of Mario’s Kitchen and Gracie’s next Door in Tsawwassen is saying about the policy, commending the City of Delta in acting quickly to help local eateries hit hard by COVID-19. “In terms of economic benefit, its’s a complete game changer. If we’re able to keep going beyond Halloween, I think there’s a chance we might be able to keep adapting until whatever the finish of COVID. If you’re not able to, that could be painful…it’s made a big difference for sure,” said Gates. Approved earlier this summer, the new policy, in addition to providing a simplified approval process, provides more

physical distancing opportunities for bars and restaurants by using parking spaces or areas of mall lots, but also enables businesses to potentially add space through the temporary closures of certain parking spaces and/or streets. Mayor George Harvie said they had very positive feedback for Delta’s summer expanded patio program from both residents and restaurant owners this summer. He said the plan now is to extend the new policy indefinitely, as well as direct city staff to authorize the winterization of patios on civic property through the use of tents, louvered roofs, and heaters. Council will discuss the motion on Sept. 14. “The overwhelming feedback is that these expanded patios are a public benefit that have enhanced our public realm,” said Harvie. “In conversation with

local business owners, it has become clear that this program must be expanded into the fall and winter if we are going to give our local restaurants a chance to succeed. I have asked Coun. Kruger, who drafted the original expanded patio motion, to bring a new motion to our next council meeting, extending the patio program indefinitely, and authorizing restaurants to winterize their patios through the use of tents, louvered roofs, and heaters. “As Mayor, I am committed to doing whatever we can as a city to help our local businesses succeed during these challenging times.” Kruger noted the pandemic continues to result in severe economic hardship for local businesses across the community. “I was proud that council unanimously adopted my motion in April, making Delta the first jurisdiction in

summer is ending, our businesses are again calling on us to be leaders. I’m thankful for Mayor Harvie’s support and hopeful that Council will unanimously support my motion to extend the

Fatal crash heightens Massey replacement SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s sadly another reason why the aging George Massey Tunnel needs to be replaced sooner rather than later. Delta South MLA Ian Paton has that to say following last week’s horrific head-on crash which claimed the life of a Richmond woman, noting traffic safety concerns when it comes to the structure should compel a replacement structure as soon as possible. The province is currently preparing a business case on a preferred replacement option – a new eight-lane immersed tunnel or a long-span bridge with the same number of lanes – to be completed later this year. Paton noted that while the province is now undertaking upgrades to the current four-lane crossing, it’s far too difficult to make the tunnel much safer, especially when the counter-flow is in effect. “When you have an accident or fire in the tunnel, our first responders have a heck of a time trying to get in there to attend that scene because of the narrowness of the tunnel. When this happens, it closes the tunnel down for hours or a day sometimes, depending on how bad

the accident could be. This was a typical example,” said Paton. “The counter-flow is another thing that’s a bit scary when you go through there at 80-kilometresan-hour and you have cars or trucks coming at you literally a few feet away going the opposite direction. When I was on (Delta) city council, we discussed this for years and there was so much stakeholder consultations.” Noting the previous bridge project cancelled by the New Democrat government would have been just over a year away from completion by now, Paton said the $40 million now being spent on upgrades to the current crossing can’t change its width, size or traffic congestion. A City of Delta report three years ago noted that not only is there a higher than average accident rate at the current tunnel, vehicular accidents in tunnels also tend to be more severe and result in more significant injuries and deaths than accidents on open roads. A review of ICBC crashes from 2009 to 2013 found an average of more than 197 collisions annually at the tunnel and adjacent interchange, the report notes. Of these, approximate-

ly 40 per cent resulted in casualties (injury or death). Based on data from the Port Mann Bridge, a bridge would reduce collision rates by more than 35 per cent, the report adds. Also citing concerns regarding first responder safety if there is a fire in the tunnel, the report notes accidents in and approaching the tunnel exacerbate an already heavily congested traffic situation. That traffic and the lack of a shoulder lane for emergency vehicles make it difficult for first responders to reach and clear accidents, a situation which often creates an unacceptable delay in response times and the provision of critical care. In a 2016 submission to the province, the city noted many accidents occur on the approach to the tunnel, since drivers tend to reduce speed and move away from the side wall when entering a confined space. In combination with merging lanes, high traffic volumes and vehicles in close proximity, there is a higher likelihood of an accident. It’s especially problematic when the counter-flow is used during peak hours and traffic is going in both directions through a single tunnel.

Drivers do your part during COVID-19 altered school start

The start of school this year looks a bit different, and Delta Police want to remind drivers that they’re going to need to be extra cautious when driving through school zones for the first few weeks. Police start enforcement in school zones today (Thursday), and will have an enhanced presence in school zones the remainder of the school year. “A number of schools have staggered starts and schedules due to COVID-19, which means that children and youth may be walking and biking to schools at different times,” said Insp. Ryan Hall, head of the DPD Community Support Section. “Additionally, we know that COVID-19 has created new stresses for children and parents. And that means drivers really need to do their part, to be aware and slow down whenever they are in or nearing a school zone.” Parents who drop off children should be aware of potential distractions, and are reminded of the importance of keeping their focus on the road. “In these first weeks as children adjust to the new schedule they’re going to have a lot on their minds,” added Hall. “Drivers need to pay full attention to the roads, and to their speeds.” DPD will have an overt presence

t’s a tradition in South Delta that goes back decades. Hell Night is a supposed ‘riteof-passage’ for Grade 12 students in Ladner and Tsawwassen where on or near the first day of school, teens hit the streets for a night of revelry. There is underage drinking and drug use among some, some vandalize property – both public and private – as was the case last year when thousands of dollars of damage was done to several schools across the community as well as the Ladner skate park and the Delta Gymnastics Society, while some students choose to hang out with friends seeing who can stay up the longest into the wee hours of the morning. Many students do in fact, stay up all night, and show up to school the next day either so tired that they can’t stand up or are so hung over or sick, they can’t stand up either. Now I know what some are going to say, I’m an outsider to this community. I’m not a ‘traditionalist’ and this is a time honoured tradition here in South Delta. Let kids be kids and let them have their fun. While I recognize all that to a point, none of these activities sound ‘fun’ to me and sound even less like a fun time amidst a world-wide global pandemic where we are all trying to reduce our exposure to COVID-19. Earlier this week, Delta School District officials sent a letter to parents of Grade 12 students, urging them, if not pleading with them, to put a stop to Hell Night this year, citing the pandemic for one, and the eroding trust and lack of community that such an endevour brings with it as another. I couldn’t agree more with school officials on this one. Hell Night is a tradition that once had its time, but that time is up.

Six months in, managing the threat of COVID-19 remains a challenge

ears ago a councillor told me, “Living with uncertainty is a sign of maturity.” That advice stuck with me, but lately I’m not feeling so mature. Frankly I am tired of the corona virus and all the uncertainty it brings to our lives. Most of us adapted well to the pandemic this summer and we found a way to make it meaningful. Now with summer in the rear view mirror and the promise of a beautiful autumn, winter is just around the corner and I am dreading it. Our first challenge is the march back to school, which looks more like a tug of war than a skip. We are all holding our collective breath to see how children will manage in the coming weeks. Brave little soldiers, whether they are returning to classrooms or home schooling I admire you all. Flu season is on the horizon, I’ve never had a flu shot, but this year I will get one. Most doctors predict it will be a milder year thanks to all the precautions we are taking around corona virus.

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

Since we basically live in a rain forest social distancing outdoors will soon become impossible. Sadly some restaurants will not survive. I certainly won’t be eating soggy fries under a rain soaked patio umbrella. I am worried about our health care system becoming over-burdened. My mothers’ much needed hip replacement surgery is scheduled for the end of October. Could it be cancelled? Winter may be most challenging for our seniors in longterm care who only recently began to see their love ones. Visits will have to be modified. I feel for the elderly who need

the touchstone of family. Pandemic driving habits are insane. Less traffic does not mean you can drive aggressively way over the speed limit or drive impaired after a few beers in the afternoon. Delta police handed out 14 roadside prohibition on our local roads last week. That’s way too many. While 2020 has been a nightmare on so many levels compared to other communities, we are managing the pandemic well. I am grateful to live in South Delta and for the wonderful compliant community that surrounds me. Let’s keep up the good work. I remain confident a vaccine will be developed, schools, for the most part, will be safe and the economy will bounce back. Meanwhile the pandemic will force us to get outside this winter and embrace the cold. Nature, and its consistent magical rhythms, is the only certainty that keeps us sane during these troubling times. Ingrid Abbott is freelance broadcaster and reporter who likes winter sports despite not being very good at them, but will keep trying.

Metro statement concerning

Editor: Quite an admission by Metro Vancouver and a very worrying statement for all of us living in Tsawwassen. Steve Shaffrick, the Division Manager for Metro Vancouver Parks was quoted in the Optimist recently; “For Centennial we do not have a [maximum] capacity and actually none of our parks do.” Wow, just keep packing ‘em in! While municipalities and provincial authorities have introduced many measures to restrict and manage the number of visitors to their parks, Metro does just the opposite. He went on to talk about the large amount of “real estate” at Centennial and that somehow, despite the majority of its area being

permanently off-limits to the public, (for example, those areas marked as “Sensitive habitat, stay out” as well as those mysterious, ropedoff areas north of the washrooms), they have decided that the park will never be considered to be ‘full.’ The section of Boundary Bay Regional Park that lies to the south of Beach Grove has an area of less than two square kilometres. By way of comparison, at Golden Ears Provincial Park (which has an area of over 550 square kilometres) they have introduced a day-use reservation system for activities such as hiking and boating; even with that new system in place they remind people on their website that a reservation does not guarantee a parking spot!

At Centennial the local roads, the parking lots, the washrooms (half of which have been closed due to COVID-19 measures) and the beach itself have all experienced chaotic scenes this year due to the ever increasing numbers of beach goers being crammed into the area. In a recent letter that I wrote to the Optimist I joked that maybe Metro will try using some of its huge coaches to bring folks in from further afield. Instead of just shuttling the crowds in from the South Delta Rec. Centre they could be moving people in directly from, say, from Abbotsford or Coquitlam; but after Shaffrick’s comments I am now worried that they might well be planning to do exactly that! School kids can wear masks

Editor: All the blah-blah-blah debate over young school kids wearing masks versus not wearing masks has me wondering, have kids become blithering idiots since my generation started school decades ago amid polio and tuberculosis epidemics? Dads and mums teach their kids how to dress, to look both ways before crossing the road, to tie their shoe laces, to dial phones, to be polite; and then these little Einsteins start school where

they learn to read, to count, to add and to subtract, but for some reason that defies sanity and logic our so-called educators are deeming them too stupid to wear masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Well, there’s proof that babies, toddlers and school kids can wear masks: they wear them while out shopping with their mothers. Is there any hope that our educators will stop blah-blahing long enough to learn from them? Greg J. Edwards

Hawaiian Beach Tanning Salon Is Now Open

Do your part to keep everyone safe Editor: I had the pleasure of cycling on Aug. 31 and encountered several groups of cyclists. The first was at the light at the corner of 18th Ave./56th St. in Tsawwassen where there is a bike button to activate the traffic light to cross 56th St. towards the South Delta Rec. Centre. This group is not in my personal COVID-19 bubble, yet they seemed to

think it was okay to pull up right beside me and comment that “oh, we’ve added another bike.” The second was a group on the Boundary Bay dike trail between 64th Ave. and 72nd Ave. There were roughly 10 to 12 cyclists in this group and while they were polite, they made no real effort to organize themselves into single file so we could pass each other at an appropriately

social distance. All this on a day when there is a weekend three-day total of 294 new COVID-19 cases. It is frustrating for me to do my best to stay out of the personal bubble of others, but not have others respect mine. I love to be out on the dike, but wish everyone out there would do their part in keeping everyone safe during this difficult time. Elizabeth Smith

MLA’s Report IAN PATON

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Delta residents have noticeably stepped up to show kindness and compassion towards others. This generosity has become evident particularly in the support our community has shown for our small businesses. COVID-19 threw a complete curveball into the daily operations of our favourite shops, service providers, and restaurants. Faced with many difficult personal and financial decisions, many have reduced staff and services levels, and some have sadly closed their doors for good. It is often stated that small businesses are the backbone of our communities, but it bears repeating. We need only to look at businesses in Ladner, Tsawwassen, and Tilbury Industrial Park to see how they have remained resilient throughout the pandemic. For example, thanks to some quick regulation changes from the City of Delta, countless coffee

shops and restaurants across our community have expanded their service out onto the sidewalks for increased patio space. This innovation has helped restaurants to stay afloat while also allowing customers to enjoy a relaxed and physically distanced dining experience. We should also recognize the efforts made by many of our favourite local clothing boutiques and stores. In the digital age we live in, many clothing stores have modernized and ventured into the domain of online sales, roadside pick-ups, and more. There is no doubt that this was a challenging transition, but they rose to the occasion and should be commended for the efforts they’ve made to continue operating over the course of the pandemic. To celebrate our small businesses, in coordination with my Official Opposition caucus and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, I have made it a personal mission to highlight as many small businesses in our community as possible on my social media channels. Whether these businesses are familiar to you or not, I hope to utilize my small platform to amplify the diverse array of goods and services our community has to offer. I welcome you to join in me in praising and supporting our local businesses, by posting on your social media pages using the hashtag

#smallbusinesseveryday. Now more than ever businesses need our support, as they grapple with the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19. Let’s do our part to help them to survive and thrive. Although I am proud of the many ways our local economy is weathering the storm, there are considerable challenges ahead as our province continues to grapple with high rates of unemployment and market instability. It will take a comprehensive economic recovery plan to get our economy back on track. Now is the time for bold ideas to re-invigorate our economy and spur new growth. Just as the City of Delta made fast, nimble changes to reduce red tape and let restaurants innovate, it’s time for the Province to consider ways to incentivize creativity and get people working again. Let’s consider temporary tax breaks on PST and the Hotel Tax. Let’s allow farmers to engage in value added activities on their farm to make soil-based agriculture more viable across British Columbia. Let’s move forward with large investments in infrastructure and transportation (I happen to know of a shovel ready tunnel replacement project that would be a great candidate for speedy approval). We need some real leadership to get our province moving again. Let’s get to work.

More traffic enforcement needed

Editor: I would like to comment on traffic enforcement or rather the lack of enforcement In Delta. I have resided in Tsawwassen for six years and observed the lack of enforcement of traffic laws such as the great number of cyclists not wearing helmets and rid-

ing on sidewalks. There are also many drivers who do not obey driving in the right lane, but continue to dawdle in the left lane and give you the middle finger when you pass on the right. Last year I contacted a patrol sergeant about these issues and was informed about the dis-

cretion that the police officers have on which laws they will enforce. They also will not enforce laws where there is a low chance for a conviction. Makes me wonder why we clutter law books with laws that we do not intend to enforce. Larry Leblanc

Facility reopenings start next week IAN JACQUES

Residents will soon be welcomed back to various recreational facilities in Delta. The City of Delta has announced further details of its phase four reopening plans, which will allow recreation facility patrons the ability to engage in a variety of registered programming. According to a Delta news release, a visit to recreation facilities will look different in order to help everyone stay safe. “The City is excited to be able to get back to offering high-quality recreation programming while maintaining physical distancing,” said the news release. “Starting mid-September, Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture facilities will begin running registered

drop-in and registered programs. This new system requires you to plan your visit in advance of arriving at the facility. Pre-registration and payment helps keep the number contact points low and the control the number of people in the facility at one time.” To register, log on through DeltaReg.ca or call 604-952-3000. Note that there will be no customer service staff on site to process registration, scan passes, or take drop-in payments in person. “Plan on arriving only a few moments before your scheduled activity. Come prepared in your attire to join the activity. Change rooms and seating will be limited. Upon arrival you will be asked about your health and recent travel. You will be asked to sanitize your hands

before entry and then will be directed to the activity area,” said the Delta news release. “Please maintain physical distancing at all times. Staff in the activity zone will greet and confirm your registration. They will provide an overview of how the activity is to occur using preventive COVID-19 measures. “During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, each specific recreation area within our facilities will utilize a variety of procedures to prioritize the health and safety of our staff and patrons. Please follow these procedures closely throughout your visit so we can all stay safe.” You can find all of the registered drop-in and regular programming, as well as the health and safety guidelines, at Delta.ca/Registration.

A Go Fund Me page has been launched for a Tsawwassen family that saw extensive fire damage to their 5200-block First Avenue home on Sept. 2. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser, which was created by a friend of the family, has generated more $12,500 with an initial goal of $25,000. In addition to the Go Fund Me page, several area residents have stepped up to raise awareness about the families’ loss in posts on the Tsawwassen Loop (NEW) Facebook group. The outpouring of support from the community has been amazing with residents offering donations of clothing, furniture and personal items to help the family get back on their feet. The family reportedly just moved to the area from Vancouver Island. The Delta fire depart-

Ladner’s Trenant Park Square shopping centre has been sold. Vancouverheadquartered Keltic Canada Development last week purchased the 138,716 square foot mall on Ladner Trunk Road for $64.5 million. It remains to be seen if

a redevelopment is on the horizon for the 31-yearold mall that sits on a 9.7-acre site, although one real estate company reporting on the sale described the property as having “future development upside.” The shopping centre features London Drugs, FreshCo, RBC, Dollarama and a Starbucks among the 31 units.

Keltic’s website notes it’s a Canadian-owned, diversified real estate development company with numerous projects including residential, industrial and mixed-use developments for sale, under construction or upcoming. Keltic notes its clear focus is on long-term strategic growth in Greater Vancouver. Among its listed proj-

ects now selling include Coco Oakridge, a-77 residential unit tower at the corner of West 41st Avenue and Alberta Street in Vancouver, The Paramount, which has 536 residential units with 84 strata offices on No.3 Road in Richmond, and Park West on Capilano Road in North Vancouver, which includes 258 homes in two towers.

Dos and don’ts of self-isolation

For people who may have been exposed but do not have symptoms

May 22, 2020

If you have come into contact with an infected person, you are required to self-isolate. This does not necessarily mean that you have COVID-19, but you are at risk for developing the disease and passing the infection on to others. As of March 25, 2020 it is mandatory Under the Quarantine Act that anyone arriving in British Columbia from outside of Canada to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days upon their arrival and complete/register a self isolation plan. There are some individuals who are exempt from this order to provide essential services, but they still require a selfisolation plan and need to self-monitor for symptoms. Do stay home for 14 days • •

Estabrooks supports Legion with CD release

A 68-year labour of love has finally been completed. Ladner musician Ian Estabrooks recently released his debut solo album Living My Dream and is donating partial proceeds to the Ladner Legion of which he is a long-standing member. The CD features original songs from Ed Molyski, Kootenay Jack and Jess Lee. Estabrooks said he was certainly hoping for a far different launch than this, but with the COVID19 pandemic he has had to release the CD on-line through Facebook and hope for the best. “I started on and off in the music business since 1965 – that’s when the cover picture of the CD is from and my first gig,” he said. “I’ve helped other guys with their projects and had always thought about doing one myself, but I was a commercial fisherman, so by the time you could get to the music, it was time to go fishing again. “I retired a few years ago and the fellow who produced it and my kids especially said why don’t you get at it, so we started in earnest last year.” He said it is mostly country with some country rock and ballads. “Everything was written by Ed Molyski from Surrey…he has been Juno nominated a couple of times and B.C. Country Music Association Hall of Famer, so just some songs of his that I liked and a couple of others and we put it together,” he said. “I’m quite pleased with how it turned out. It’s good to have a lot of my friends involved.” If you are interested in a copy email him at: smashjax@telus.net or copies are now available at the Lander Legion.

Delta animal shelter to benefit from hand sewn masks MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Sandy McKeller has taken her passion for sewing and turned it into a small business for a terrific cause. Her impressive threelayer and reversible “Tree Frog” masks are now available for purchase at South Delta Heels in Ladner Village for $20 with $5 of the proceeds going to the Delta Community Animal Shelter. “I call them tree frog masks because like a tree frog they glom onto your face to keep you safe,” laughed McKeller. “The animal shelter is close to my heart. I love the work that they do there and their staff is amazing.” McKeller’s maskmaking started when she learned there were none for the volunteers that worked at her father’s care home. She donated 25 of them and posted the finished product on her Facebook page. The rave reviews resulted in her making 250 more and sending them throughout North America, including Alabama and Washington State.

South Delta Heels owner Carol Miles (right) was happy to feature Sandy McKeller’s home sewn masks that will see $5 of each purchase going to the Delta Community Animal Shelter.

“My work has diminished a little bit since the virus outbreak, so I found myself with a little bit of free time on my hands,” she explained. “I’m a collector of antique sewing machines, so it gives me an opportunity to play and tinker with them. It’s actually been really fun for me. Then the opportunity to have them here

and knowing there will be people in the local community wearing them and donating to the animal shelter.” Besides McKeller’s work, masks are readily available throughout the village. “We are moving into the next season and people are going to be wearing their masks

more and more,” said South Delta Heels owner Carol Miles. “In our community we need to make them readily accessible to the residents of Ladner and other people who come in. “It’s important to have masks available and the fact she is raising money for an importance cause makes it a win, win situ-

ation.” Miles was quick to point out many other businesses within the village selling masks including South Coast Casuals, Angela’s Boutique, Buttercups, Muddy River Landing, The Flower Shop in the Village, Brass Eagle Tattoo Company, Camilles, Localz, Fancy This and Hygge.

Ladner author’s first book teaches alphabet, life lessons IAN JACQUES

ijacques@delta-optimist.com

A love of children’s books and reading them to her own children and grandchildren prompted Gloria Sampson to write one of her own. Along with her husband Rick, the 40-year Ladner resident recently published Taige’s Mouse Tails of ABCs. The story is named after her granddaughter Taige. Each mouse story is unique and covers one letter of the alphabet, emphasizing words that begin with that letter. The stories are fun and provide children with a life lesson. Every story is also enhanced by an illustration that depicts the characters and brings the story to life. “I never thought I’d ever write and illus-

trate one of my own, but here I am,” said Sampson. “I started painting windows in the hospital where our young son Bobby had to stay for a while. It brightened a very drab children’s ward at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria with characters that the little children loved. Later I painted on bank and store windows as well as the Vancouver Airport. “Then I went on to paint glass balls with little critters and sold them at local craft shows. My customers always told me that I should write a children’s book.” Sampson admits she was flattered by the suggestion, but didn’t think she could. “However, one day while taking a nap the story of Bobby Mouse with things falling around him that started with the letter ‘B’ was very vivid,” she recalled. “When

I woke, I had to start writing right away. Everything just fell into place resulting in a mouse story, and an illustration for each letter of the alphabet. I hope this book will be loved by all the little ones.” As a self-published author, it did take a while – five years, in fact – for Sampson to put pen to paper and get through the publishing process. The book was finally released in January. She said she has other ideas in the works and if this first book is well received, she wants to release more in the future. “If people like this one, I have lots of ideas with this mouse,” she said. Check out her website at www.taigesmousetails.com to learn more about the author and purchase the book.

Minister`s Minute: Imagine...

ANDREAS BASON

P n e u m a C h u rc h

Imagine if people were able to recognize you simply by your behavior. Imagine if your behaviour became your reputation, not only out in public, but even more so at home. Philippians 4:4-5 Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be evident to all. Rejoice means - to be glad - always. The only way to always be glad in God is if you trust Him. Knowing that He has every situation covered and nothing is outside of His reach.

Let’s focus on verse 5. Here is a description to help us understand the word “gentleness”. “Christian gentle people, do not seek to retaliate. They are willing to give and take instead of always standing rigidly on their rights. They are gentle, kind, courteous, tolerant, they exhibit a sweet reasonableness and an ability to extend to others the kindly consideration one would wish to receive themselves. The gentle person is not spineless but selfless.” Colossians 3:12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you

must clothe yourselves with tender-hearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. It means you don’t anger easily, you are kind, friendly, and inviting. You don’t think too highly of yourself, you are willing to put other people first. Even when there is a conflict, you show gentleness and great patience. Imagine if our behavior were gentle and “evident to all.” Imagine if this became our reputation. Let’s make this our reputation to a world that desperately needs gentleness.

Death & Dying

Coping with the loss of a loved one while social distancing Coping with the loss of a loved one can be challenging in the best of times, but many people have had to confront such challenges at a time that is unlike any other in modern history. Though traditional funerals and family gatherings may not be possible as the world responds to the COVID-19 outbreak, those who have lost loved ones can embrace various strategies to cope with their loss even while stayat-home orders remain in place. • Host calls with family members and friends. The videotelephone and chat service Zoom has helped millions of people stay connected with loved ones while social distancing. Schools and universities even employed the service when in-person class-

room sessions were canceled to stop the spread of the virus. Health officials recommend grieving families employ such technology to connect with each other in the wake of a loved one’s death. • Share stories. Grieving family members are urged to share stories and pictures much like they would during wakes and funerals. Share them during group conference calls and/or via social media, emails or other modern modes of communications. Connecting in such ways can ensure no one is forced to grieve alone. • Seek support from your community. Health officials recommend seeking support from faith-based organizations or other trusted community leaders and friends. While in-person church

services may not be available, many local religious leaders have made themselves available to congregants and even noncongregants who may need help grieving. Local community organizations may have grief counselors available to help people cope with loss. • Take part in an activity that meant something to you and your deceased loved one. Doing something in memory of a loved one can help people cope. For example, plant flowers in honor of a deceased parent with whom you shared a love of gardening. Confronting the loss of a loved one during the COVID-19 outbreak can be challenging, but families can still overcome this challenge even if they cannot gather together in person.

Navigating the waters of funeral trusts Discussing end-oflife issues can be an emotional experience. Making decisions upon the death of a loved one can be challenging, especially if the wishes of the deceased are murky or unknown. Funeral trusts often help families avoid making decisions at times when their emotions may make such decisions more difficult. What is preplanning a funeral? Preplanning a funeral can save family and friends from having to make difficult decisions. It also enables people to choose their burial space, services and transportation. What is a funeral trust? Funeral trust can be a smart investment for people who have not

spelled out their wishes in a will or conveyed them in writing to someone who will be managing their estate. Funeral trusts may be referred to as revocable or irrevocable. An irrevocable funeral trust, or IFT, is a tool people who are facing the high cost of skilled nursing care can consider. An IFT establishes an account into which money for funeral expenses is deposited. The money cannot be withdrawn or refunded, and funds must be used for funeral expenses. Various organizations oversee the investment and management of prepaid funeral trust accounts. When is a trust unnecessary? In certain instances, a

funeral trust will not be needed. Those who have the means to fund longterm care services and will not need assistance later in life may not want their money locked up in a trust. Others opt for life insurance policies to pay for funeral needs. Assistance with funeral trusts Funeral homes may work directly with companies that manage funeral funds. Speak with a funeral director if you want to learn more about trusts. Trusts also can be established by working with an elder care attorney or with a funeral trust agency. Taking care of funeral planning in advance can relieve families of the stress of making funeral decisions in the wake of a loved one’s death.

Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Even those comforted by the acknowledgment that a recently deceased friend or family member lived a full life may still struggle with the sense of loss that comes with the passing of a loved one. Upon the passing of a loved one, an individual is often tasked with writing an obituary. Some people may find writing an obituary is cathartic, providing an opportunity to tell a loved one’s life story and indicate how unique the deceased was. Because writing an obituary is not something people are asked to do every day, it’s understandable if many men and women don’t know where to begin. Obituaries do not necessarily have to follow a formula, but the following tips can help people compose an obituary that conveys who their

deceased loved one was and how much this person meant to friends and family. • Contact your local newspaper. Some newspapers may have obituary guidelines that govern things like writing style and obituary length. • Do not feel obliged to include cause of death. While acquaintances who first learn of a person’s death via an obituary may be curious about cause of death, loved ones of the deceased do not have to include such information if they are uncomfortable doing so. Many obituaries never include such information, so readers likely won’t expect it. • Include some biographical information. Obituaries are typically more than simple announcements of death. Some simple biological information can shed light on who the

deceased was and his or her personal and professional accomplishments • Include donation information. Wellwishers who read the obituary may want to send flowers or make donations to express their condolences. Include the family preference regarding flowers or donations in the obituary. • Include visitation and funeral information. Be sure to include the day, location and visitation hours for viewings. If the funeral will be public, include the day and time of the funeral as well. • Have the obituary ready one to two days before the services are scheduled. Publishing the obituary a couple of days in advance of visitation hours gives loved ones of the deceased time to arrange to visit and pay their respects.

Memorial gifts honor loved ones

The loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a

charitable group. Community foundation Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Personal intentions Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise,

donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Medical tribute Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases

are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have

a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Finish their work

If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

Impressive summer for junior golfer

Beach Grove junior member Russell Howlett continued his impressive summer of competitive golf with a second place finish at last week’s Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Ford Series event at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club. The 18-year-old South Delta Secondary graduate fired rounds of 73-69 to finish four shots back of Langley’s Riley Geiger. The tour has two more stops at Golden Eagle in Pitt Meadows (Sept. 19-20) and Mayfair Lakes in Richmond (Oct. 3-4) before Morgan Creek in South Surrey hosts the MJT National Championship (Oct. 9-12). Earlier this summer, Howlett finished second at the B.C. Junior Boys Championship, on the Bear Course at the Okanagan Golf Club. He fired rounds of 70-75-69 to finish a single stroke back of Victoria’s William Bishop. Howlett began a three tournament stretch with his first-ever victory on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour, capturing the MJT Ford Series stop at Predator Ridge in Vernon. He recorded rounds of 74-71 to edge Kelowna’s Kyle Mayner.

Sand has never looked so good to Megan and Nicole McNamara. The 23-year-old sisters from Tsawwassen are getting their first taste of beach volleyball action this year in the Netherlands, including this week’s King of the Court in Utrecht that got underway yesterday. “It’s a different format to a usual world tour event,” said Megan prior to departing for Europe. It’s super fun with 20 teams. With (COVID-19) it’s not going to be the same as past years but they have a pretty cool constructed stadium that is COVID friendly. All the athletes will be tested once we get there and it’s just going to be great to be playing again.” Since capping off their outstanding AllAmerican university careers at UCLA in 2019, which concluded with the Bruins winning their first national championship, the twins have been residing in Toronto as

members of Canada’s national development team. When the pandemic hit the lockdown stage back in March, the girls returned to their Tsawwassen home for an extended stay. “We were so grateful for that time,” reflected Nicole. “It was so nice to catch my breath and be with my family. It still feels like home and there is a sense of comfort to be back there.” “At the end of the day, it wasn’t the worst timing for us and was a total blessing in disguise. We haven’t had a chance to spend that much time at home, with our parents, our dog and our grandparents too,” added Megan. “We finished our senior season at UCLA by winning nationals then had a really special graduation week. We trained really hard this off season and felt we were really in good shape leading up to the season so it was disappointing. We have been trying to make the most of it.” The girls are not only living out east for

the first time but also have adjusted to having a much more hands on approach to their playing careers after four years in a NCAA environment. “It’s a big adjustment. In NCAA you are very well taken care of. They plan everything and we don’t have to make many decisions ourselves,” said Nicole. “Professionally we have to book all our own flights and motels. We may have to get ourselves from Brazil to China so definitely a lot tougher. “We have adjusted to that but we have always been independent and pretty comfortable on the road.” Prior to the King of the Court, McNamaras finished fourth at a Dutch national tour event in Breda last weekend and will conclude the trip in Switzerland by training with some friends on its national team. It will then be back in Canada for 14-days of quarantine before preparing for national team winter training that gets underway after the Thanksgiving weekend.

Camp provides preview of soccer season MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It was an appropriate launch to BC Soccer’s Phase Two Return to Play plan that brought roughly 100 youngsters to Dugald Morrison Park. South Delta United hosted its popular summer skills camp last week that usually takes place in early July. However, with the anticipation of looser COVID-19 restrictions coming, the sold out camp was pushed back to late August and provided glimpse of what to expect in the upcoming fall season. “I think it was important to show parents and kids that we can get back into playing soccer and we can do it safely,” said Russ Heggie, SDU’s Head of Player Development. “Just little things like how we set up the cones so we can manipulate where kids need to be or having cones where they have to put their bag. “Logistically it has been a bit challenging but the kids and

South Delta United’s popular summer skills camp provided a good trial run for COVID-19 safety measures that will be in place for the coming season. the parents have adapted. It’s just a matter of being diligent and making sure we all continue to play soccer and not take a step backwards. The social element is huge for these kids. They see some friends and teammates they haven’t

seen for a while or make new friends as well.” There had to be plenty of improvising for this year’s camp, including the use of the adjacent Dugald baseball diamond with a maximum of 50 players and coaches

allowed on the field at a time. There was only one entrance onto both fields where players passed through a hand sanitizer station. Hand contact with balls and other equipment was also avoided. It will mean different rules for the coming

season with “kick-ins” replacing throw-ins. “It’s going to be quick restarts. Not like corner kicks,” continued Heggie. “We will still promote possession and high percentage passing. “One of our challenges for the fall is the turf schedule for our younger levels as we usually have multiple teams out there. Now it will be smaller groups.” BC Soccer’s Phase 2 plan includes the introduction of “soccer cohorts” which is an identified group of 50 players (or four teams) that will remain together for a specific period of time to play games. That should commence later next month. “You are going to see us play against our regional partners like Coastal FC (South Surrey) and North Delta. It will be a mini-season then a two-week break before playing a new group of teams,” added Heggie. “Then potential travel to Surrey United and Guildford United too.”

Linda Bowing Coldwell passed away peacefully on March 16 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was brought up on Westham Island, the daughter of Herb and Helen Bowing. She leaves behind her husband, Rick; sons, Chris and Jeremy; stepdaughters, Michelle and Nicole; grandchildren and great−grandchildren; brother, Gary Bowing; and sister, Carol MacPherson. She predeceased by sister Donna Ferguson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

Dennis Currie was an airline captain, a published poet, a commercial fisherman, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Dennis was born in 1950 in Vancouver, BC, to Betty and Art Currie. He is survived by his loving wife, Joanne; his children, Vanessa (Julien), Daniel (Lauren) and Jessica (Chewie); five little grandkids; and dearest sister, Debra (Garth). Dennis always dreamed of being a pilot. After short but memorable stints as a waiter on the S.S. Prince George and a dock−boy in Tahsis, he began his flying career in 1972 in Tofino. He was an expert pilot, flying floats on the BC coast, Hercules in Africa and the Arctic, and various jetliners (A320, 737, 767, DC−9, DC−10, 747, 777) around the world.

OBITUARIES

Dennis lived life to the fullest, always seeking out new adventures by float, tin boat, the Red Boat, dirt bike, or airplane. Telling stories from memory, so vivid and with such gusto that you couldn’t help but hang on every word − even the third time ’round. Dennis celebrated every moment, reminding us how lucky we were with each new adventure. Whether it was gyoza in Honolulu, handmade noodles in Shanghai, or an Irish pub in Sydney, he was a local in every town. People were always drawn to Dennis. He was funny, handsome and smart, but it was his joy for life that drew you in. He always laughed the loudest and welcomed everyone to the party. He filled our lives with music. He rigged stereo systems in every garage, barn, car, or boat, his favourite songs playing on repeat as he sang along. His love of fun was only matched by his love of family. He was a father figure to many and a friend to all. Together with his wife Joanne, they created a welcoming and nurturing home where everyone felt included and loved.

EHRENHOLZ, Eugene (John) January 23, 1926 − April 20, 2020 John was born in Warsaw, Poland and came to Canada at age two. He was raised in Abbotsford, BC, with sisters, Lucy and Alice; and brother, Richard, and joined the Canadian army at age 18. He later studied Civil Engineering at UBC, graduating in 1953. He married Margaret in 1957 and had three children, Don(Corina), Karen, and Elizabeth (Andree). He moved the family from Whitehorse, Yukon down to Vancouver, where he raised his family and went on to study Law at UBC, graduating in 1966. He practised law for 12 years in Tsawwassen, retiring in the early 1980s. He went back into Engineering, working for Public Works out of Fort Nelson to build his pension, where he retired at age 65. However, he continued to work as an Engineering Consultant in Delta until age 82 and was well respected in the community as one of the best! He enjoyed his seven grandchildren and was a Super Senior right to the end. He will be dearly missed by all!

Dennis encouraged everyone to live life to the fullest, and take chances, because you only live once. His enthusiasm for life will live on in each of us who were lucky enough to know him. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charities run by his daughters: Central Westcoast Forest Society <www.clayoquot.org> and the International Institute for Child Rights and Development <www.iicrd.org>.

Our sister Sandra passed away unexpectedly in her home on September 1, 2020. Sandra was the eldest child of the late Ron and Ann Pawson. Left to miss her and mourn her are her sister, Joann (Michael); and brothers, Peter (Lorraine), Colin (Marilyn), and Jim (Andi). Sandra cherished her nieces and nephews, Stephen (Nicole), William (Melissa), Elizabeth (Sean), Shawn (Stacey), Keirstan, Christopher (Candace), Sara (Ron), Colin (Tara), Genevieve (Michael), and Quinn (Kirsten) and delighted in their much−loved children. Sandra was always so happy and appreciative to be included in their lives. Born in Woking, England, she came to Canada as an infant and grew up in Montreal, where she was a long time employee of IATA. Upon retirement, she moved to Tsawwassen to be close to her family and embarked on an exciting, happy life. Upon arrival, she joined the South Delta Newcomers and Alumni club, and later the Delta Stroke and Recovery Society. Friends from both kept her busy and happy. There will be a private family funeral. Condolences may be sent to Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Service, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Delta Stroke and Recovery Society at 693 53rd Street, Delta, BC, V4M 3B6.

SHARMAN, Beryl Margaret (nee Roberts) Beryl was born at 82 Selby Road, Orrell Park, Liverpool in the family home, and attended Rice Lane Primary School followed by a scholarship place at Queen Mary High School for girls, where she complained that all the textbooks were many times used, due to wartime shortages. After a term at the Liverpool College of Commerce, taking shorthand and typing she was employed by the Royal Insurance Company’s Liverpool head office. When the opportunity came to move to their new head office in London, she took the chance and moved there. She settled in Streatham, south London, and joined the other City bound commuters. It was while living in Streatham that she met her future husband whom she later married in Winnipeg, whence he had moved. Together they lived in Winnipeg for over 20 years before moving to St. Albert, Alberta for some 5 years. They then moved to Tsawwassen and started a 30 year acquaintanceship with that beautiful location. While in Tsawwassen she was employed by translink in a number of situations, retiring after 5 years service. About a year ago she had nasty fall down some concrete steps from which she did not recover, and went into a slow decline, first in Delta Hospital and later in Mountain View Manor where she was very well looked after by the good staff there. Thanks must also be given to her physician Dr. Stuart Noble for his excellent ministration. Beryl has left behind a much loved daughter, Vicky, and two grownup grandchildren, Daphne and Miranda, all of Winnipeg, who miss her greatly. Also missing her is her husband, Roger Sharman of Tsawwassen who had known her for nearly 60 years and had been married to her for 55 years. Simple funeral arrangements have been made, as she requested. May she rest in peace.
