Delta fire seeks cause of greenhouse blaze Sunday fire at Canopy Growth’s former growing facility in East Delta IAN JACQUES
ij acq ues@ de lt a- opt imi st .com
Delta fire investigators continue to pour over the charred remains of a two-alarm fire that consumed a greenhouse in East Delta Sunday morning. Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at Canopy Growth’s former Delta growing facility in the 10200-block of Hornby Drive at 7:30 a.m. This was after an initial response from Delta police, who noticed smoke coming from the area. Deputy fire Chief Guy McKintuck said that once firefighters arrived on scene, the call was changed from a first alarm to a second alarm, so seven apparatus were dispatched. “So that was approximately 30 firefighters,” he said. “It was reported that the area of origin was a shipping/receiving area of the greenhouse.” He said the structure contained cardboard material and a diesel generator and that no chemicals or fertilizers were inside the burnt-out structure. There was also no reported injuries to firefighters and no one was inside the building. Thick clouds of heavy black
smoke were reported across the Lower Mainland as firefighters worked well into the morning to contain the blaze. Around 11 a.m., McKintuck said some crews were removed from the area and put back into regular service at their respective departments. Fire investigators were on scene throughout the week looking to determine a cause, which as of press time Wednesday, was still undetermined. Delta Mayor George Harvie praised the work of the department in containing the blaze so quickly. “Our crews were outstanding as always,” said Harvie. “It also showed the benefit of the council of the day, approving the Boundary Bay Fire Hall because that gave a much quicker response and makes a huge difference in firefighters fighting a fire of this nature.” The building, owned by Canopy Growth, has sat empty since the company closed its Delta-based facility in March. Calls into the company for comment on the fire and investigation were not returned by press deadline Wednesday morning.

A chaotic election night in Point Roberts MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It was a wild and chaotic night in the US Election even in the tiny community of Point Roberts. Advanced voting and mail-in ballots have Joe Biden continuing the Democratic trend like the rest of Washington State with a comfortable 617203 lead over President Donald Trump. All but one of votes cast on Election Day, however, were to be counted until sometime on Wednesday thanks to a jammed lock. It resulted in a crazy day on Tuesday for Stephen Falk. The Point Roberts resident and volunteer had two essential travel trips through the Canadian border on Tuesday to the Whatcom County Audit’s Office in Bellingham. The first was to collect the key that would unlock the community’s lone ballot box located in the Marketplace grocery store. The second was
to deliver the ballots to Bellingham for counting once the polls were closed. “We couldn’t get the ballot box open. I’m not sure if it was jammed or just the wrong key which the election office believed it was,” said Falk. “It was bolted to the floor so there was no way it was coming with me.” Complicating the situation was the Marketplace being open limited hours due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was up to Falk and other volunteers Virginia Lester and Shelly Damewood to wait in the store parking lot for an hour with a portable ballot box. The poll was 15 minutes from closing when one voter showed up. Falk had to drive the one ballot down to Bellingham. “He was working in Canada, drove over to vote, but never got the actual ballot package,” continued Falk. “He was able to download something which I didn’t even
know you could do. He had loose papers and I told him he needed to put them in an envelope. I’m not sure if it’s even going to count. “I was hoping I could just keep it in the box until the morning, but because of the chain of custody it wasn’t going to work that way and they wanted me to come back with it.” A Whatcom County election official came to the Marketplace on Wednesday morning to open the ballot box and bring them back to Bellingham, ending Falk’s duties. The box was installed in the store around midOctober and was emptied every few days by officials who made the trip to Point Roberts. ‘We’ve only had the drop box since the 2016 election,” added Falk. “The only option before was mailing it in or drop it off in the county if you happened to be over there which is what

A bank is set close Dec. 11. A marina is minus 450 boats and a usually thriving parcel business has been essentially dormant for seven months. These are tough times in the isolated community of Point Roberts and it can’t catch a break these days. When Ottawa announced on Friday it was relaxing rules around the COVID-19 quarantine period for isolated Canada-U.S. border communities, Point Roberts wasn’t
included. Instead it’s the residents of border towns of Stewart B.C., Hyder, AK., Campobello, N.B. and The Northwest Angle of Minnesota that will benefit for essential grocery shopping and medical appointments. “I’m stunned and outraged,” said Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce president Brian Calder. “We support and applaud the other exclaves along the 49th parallel getting that relaxation of the lockdown rules. We think that’s sensible and it recognizes the extreme hardships being
thrust upon them the last eight months and it could be another eight. Who knows!” The Point Roberts Marina has gone from 650 boats down to 200 with Canadian owners getting them delivered to their side of the border. Banners Bank inside the Market Place grocery store is closing permanently next month, laying off five, full-time employees, and leaving Umpqua Bank as the lone financial institution option on the Point. Recently, Calder suggested
the creation of a punch card day pass system to allow some travel between Canada and the U.S. peninsula. The border card could apply to both Canadians and Americans entering either way. The card will have five punches per household per month for crossing. Proposed reasons accepted for entry/exit would include for things like food, veterinary and medical appointments, supplies, shopping, property checks, family visits and schooling.

More than 1,200 Deltans vaccinated at community clinic CAMERON THOMSON
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Thousands of Deltans will have the volunteer hours of Delta medical practitioners to thank for answering the increased call for flu vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Delta Division of Family Practice, in partnership with the City of Delta, Delta Police, Fraser Health and Public Health have coordinated four mass vaccination clinics at the Harris Barn in Ladner. There are two more clinics left which will be held from 12 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 7. Sandy Chuang, a family doctor working in Ladner, said Deltans have been more proactive about getting their vaccines this year, as some residents sought out vaccines as early as August. The clinic is run by approximately 15 volunteers made up of nurses, doctors and pharmacists all donating their time to keep up with the demand. The first clinic held at Harris Barn on Oct. 29 saw 500 Deltans receive vaccinations. Then on Oct. 31, 800 more residents were vaccinated. Chuang expects 800 to 900 more residents to receive their shots during each of the remaining clinic days for a total of approximately 3,000 immunizations. Adriana Wong, a family doctor in

The mass vaccine clinic set up at Harris Barn. The clinic is expected to vaccinate approximately 3,000 Delta residents by the last clinic date on Saturday, Nov. 7. Tsawwassen says the run on flu vaccines is also spurred by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry’s recommendation that every British Columbian receive their flu vaccine this year, not just those most at risk. Wong said any vaccination clinics can provide are valuable to the health system as a whole.
“Symptoms of influenza and COVID19 look very similar, so at least if a patient has already had their flu vaccine and they do develop symptoms, we’re pretty well assured that it’s not related to influenza,” Wong said. “Every year influenza does have a burden on healthcare. A lot of patients do get very ill from it, so if people are not vaccinated against
influenza then they do become a burden on the healthcare system.” An unexpected upside of the clinics is it gives doctors a chance to catch up with patients they haven’t seen since the pandemic began. “There’s a real community atmosphere,” Wong said. “I think from a family doctor’s point of view, we haven’t seen a lot of our patients for the last six months and it was so nice to actually see patients live even though it’s a very brief encounter.” Chuang noted that she doesn’t want Deltans to fear the term ‘mass clinic’ and the number of people the clinic can service in six hours, adding every step along the process is sanitized and each patient is able to be socially distant. Appointments must be booked online at https://divisionsbc.ca/delta or you can call 604-943-5591. To keep the vaccinations flowing there are a few steps patients can take: * Arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment * Arrive with a completed consent form, a valid Care Card and a pen * Roll up your sleeve in preparation for your shot * Parents/caregivers bringing young children should bring something to keep them occupied during the 15-minute post-vaccine wait period.

Police appeal to public for video footage DPD investigating Oct. 15 incident where teen girl was approached IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta police are once again appealing to the public for dash cam or video footage as investigators try to identify a suspect who approached a teenage girl in Tsawwassen in mid-October. DPD say that on Oct. 15, a teenage girl reported that a man driving a burgundy car exited his car and told her to come in the vehicle with him. The suspect is described as Caucasian, in his 50s, with white hair cut short over the ears and longer on top, and was wearing brown baggy pants with a blue T-shirt at the time of the
incident. “Investigators are looking for footage specifically from the area of 53A Ave. to English Bluff Road and 12th Ave. to 10A Ave. between 8 and 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 15. So that is someone who was in the area and saw something or has dash cam or video surveillance and have not yet spoken to police,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. Anyone who may have information is asked to call DPD at 604-9464411. DPD have also confirmed that there is no suspicious behavior or criminal intent following a report of a suspicious person and vehicle on
Oct. 28. Officers located and spoke with the driver of the vehicle involved in the Oct. 28 reported suspicious circumstance, involving a burgundy vehicle and a teenage girl. “Police officers have identified the driver and have interviewed both him and the teen who made the report on Oct. 28,” added Leykauf. “Police have determined there was no wrongdoing in this instance, and no ill intent. No offence was committed. Furthermore the driver from the Oct. 28 incident does not match the description of the man from the earlier incident.”

Delta police, fire and city crews report busy Halloween IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta emergency and city officials are reporting a very busy Halloween night with numerous calls for fireworks complaints, public intoxication and larger gatherings in public parks. Delta police said they anticipated Halloween on a Saturday night, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, would be a very busy occasion, so significant resources were on hand including: patrol officers, the traffic specialty dog unit officer, traffic officers, TFN Services officers, reserve constables and a uniform COVID-19 Related Measures Act team. “The primary focus for police was to preserve public safety and prevent harm, as well as protect infrastructure and property,” said DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf. “Bylaw and COVID-19 measures enforcement were also considerations.” Leykauf said police had nearly triple the amount of calls for service on Saturday as compared to Friday night. Approximately half the calls were related to fireworks, and police made a number of fireworks seizures. Patrols were conducted by both vehicle and foot to deter youths from gathering. Police also located an extremely intoxicated teen passed out on the side of the road, and drove him home. “Overall, police are pleased to report that despite it being a very busy night, there were no injuries reported to police, and no assaults or robberies,” added Leykauf. “No major infrastructure has been reported as damaged, though there was minor damage to public property. There was also some damage to vehicles reported in Ladner, and an arrest was made in regard to this.” Leykauf said there were significant numbers of teens and youths gathering by schools and in parks in South Delta. “During one occasion, where police were trying to clear approximately 100 teens from the fields of South Delta Secondary, they noticed a 16-year-old girl, bent over, her face inches from a huge firework, trying to ignite it with a lighter. The girl had been consuming alcohol,” said Leykauf. “The firework had 19 charges, and was designed to go high with multiple displays.
This firework was seized from a youth by Delta police. If it was ignited, say police, it could have caused serious injuries.
It was supposed to be lit with a proper fuse, and spectators have to be at least 80 metres away. Officers believe the teen or spectators could have been seriously injured, should she have succeeded in lighting it. Nevertheless the teen was not happy with police when the firework was seized.” She said police received about 20 calls regarding suspected gatherings. “Sometimes a small party was wrapping up for the evening, other times youths had been loitering nearby, and this was confused for a party,” added Leykauf. “Hosts were provided education about the new Provincial Health Order. Police also issued one $1,150 ticket for a violation of the Quarantine Act. “Of note, there was some speculation on social media that a car was set on fire in the 7400 block of 116 St. because of fireworks. This is incorrect, and the matter is under investigation as an arson. It is not Halloween related.” Delta fire department reported two incidents in South Delta – a burning complaint and a hedge fire,
while in North Delta, a garbage can fire in a park and another garbage can fire in which kids were seen lighting it. City of Delta engineering department reported vandalism to Hawthorne Park where fixtures were damaged in the washrooms. The community library was vandalized in Wade Road Park. According to Delta, this is the responsibility of the North Delta Rotary Club to replace/repair. There was also graffiti reported on the park ID sign at Westview Mini Park. “With respect to our Halloween Patrol, there was fireworks debris reported at a few locations,” said city manager Sean McGill. “Overall it was a good night with very little damage. Staff spent a lot of time watching and moving youth along with simple use of strobe lights and presence. Early in the evening Hawthorn Park was a trouble spot. The other challenging spot around 9 p.m. was Dennison Park. The park filled with kids that needed Delta police to disperse the crowd.” Mayor George Harvie said as fireworks were a major issue in Delta and across the Lower Mainland, he will be pushing for a more regionalized approach to stop their use. “I’ve talked with other local officials in other municipalities and it looks like it was all over the Lower Mainland. I was pretty shocked,” he said. “It started Friday and into early Sunday morning and that is just unacceptable. We can’t have our bylaw people and police out there ticketing everyone. This is more of a regional situation. The ability for people to get fireworks and bear bangers on sale off the Internet is the problem.” Harvie said Delta does have a ban on fireworks in the city, but many residents, as evident by the numerous calls to police and the flood of complaints on social media, simply ignored the ban. “Certain members of the public ignore the ban and ignore the problems that these cause,” he said. “They buy from the Internet and from neighbouring municipalities.” Harvie said he will be bringing the issue to the Metro Vancouver board as well as speaking with Delta MP Carla Qualtrough at the federal level to see if it can be addressed there as well. “This is not just a problem in Delta,” he said.

Delta urging residents to help bend back the curve IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta officials are urging the community to follow public health orders as COVD-19 cases continue to surge in the Fraser Health region. In a news release, Delta says it is continuing to make every effort to stop the spread of the virus in the community. With the case numbers, positivity rate, and hospitalizations related to COVID-19 all increasing rapidly, the City of Delta is asking all Deltans to redouble their efforts to stop the spread of the virus. “I am very concerned about the rapid increase in COVID-19 numbers we have seen recently and how continued spread of this virus could lead to closures like we have seen in other provinces that would impact all of us,
particularly local businesses and the most vulnerable,” said Mayor George Harvie. “We all know what we need to do as a community to push the curve back down and protect each other through this second wave. The City has worked hard to utilize all the tools available to ensure the safety of the community. “Now is the time for every person in Delta and beyond to make the commitment and sacrifices needed to protect the community from this awful virus. We owe it to our local businesses, Delta Hospital, and the most vulnerable people in our society to do everything we can to stop the spread and save lives. We can do this, but we must all take decisive action.” City of Delta facilities reopened mid-September with safety procedures, including the
mandatory wearing of face masks, the requirement to pre-register for programs, and physical features in place to support safe physical distancing, hygiene, and sanitation. Through Delta’s bylaws department, there will be active enforcement of the Provincial Health Officer’s orders, including the Oct. 26 order limiting gatherings in homes to those in the household plus a ‘safe six’. Delta will continue to share information about the virus through Delta’s website and social media channels to help educate the community and promote safe practices and will also continue advocating and supporting the local business community with actions undertaken through the Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Team.

Editor’s Note
R
IAN JACQUES
emembrance Day, much like other large social gatherings, will be very different this year. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of public events and Remembrance Day ceremonies will be no different. For more than 25 years I have attended a ceremony on Nov. 11 in communities across this province. I’ve attended as a journalist/photographer and community citizen to mark the occasion by taking photos for the newspapers I worked for. One of my favorite ceremonies was in Sechelt, where I worked for 12 years as editor of Coast Reporter. The streets were packed every Nov. 11. No matter the weather, rain and cold, or sunny and warm, the community came out in the hundreds to support the Legion, its veterans and the community organizations in a somber, yet poignant time of reflection. My first year here at the Optimist in 2016, I attended the ceremony here at the cenotaph in Memorial Park and not surprisingly, I was blown away by the support from the community. It was gratifying to see that young and old, came out to pay their respects to those who sacrificed their lives in war-time service so we could all enjoy the freedoms that we often forget. This year the public will not be allowed to come together to remember. The Ladner Legion will be holding a private ceremony and we here at the Optimist have been allowed to photograph and document the occasion, so I, like you, will have to remember in a more private fashion. So at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 be sure to take some time to remember, reflect and pay your respects with a moment of silence and reflection. Even if we can’t be together to remember, it’s the least we can do to show our veterans that we care and thank them for their sacrifice.
With the Election behind us, it’s time to thank those who made it possible
I
t was a bit of a weird one, with so many mailin ballots and a full seven days of advance voting, but the Election of 2020 is behind us. While we have a pretty good idea of the outcome, we won’t know the absolute final result until later this month. As a poll worker, it was a bit different for me as well. The atmosphere was close, the mask and face shield I got used to over time. Election Day was much quieter than usual, but steady and just as interesting as always. Many people, as they finished polling said, ‘Thanks for volunteering!’ While we all appreciated the sentiment, we were not volunteers, we were all temporary paid workers. If you wonder why elections are expensive to hold, that’s why. It involves a lot of people. But the real people to thank are the people we honour next week – our veterans. The people who have and continue to keep our country safe, protect us from threats and help in emergency situations when called upon. Those who were lost in war and in peacetime
Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN
give us the opportunity to cast our ballots, and deserve our respect. The loss of Cpl. James Choi last weekend in a training accident shows that. Even in peacetime, serving in the Forces is dangerous, and we will remember him next week, along with all the others who have passed before him. Apparently, not everyone shares the same respect for our veterans however. When asked a year ago to come up with a plan to implement free parking for veterans, City of Vancouver staff, at the last minute, instead recommended not offering the parking, and also cutting back on existing perks. there are 12,000 people with veteran status, and claimed there are 5,000 plates in Metro Vancouver. Yet according to ICBC, there are only 353 in use. Thankfully, Vancouver’s Mayor and Council soundly rejected the recommendation, unanimously approved the parking program for the veterans and told staff to figure out a way to make it happen, which is what the staff should have done in the first place. What’s worse is those same staff will don a poppy for Remembrance Day and say they respect veterans. It’s been a public relations debacle. As it should be. Shame on you. As far as I’m concerned, the only paper that should be left on the windshield of a vehicle with veteran plates should be a thank-you note. Lest we forget. Apparently, someone did. Kudos to youth who helped clean up Editor: There were hundreds of kids in Hawthorne Park on Halloween night. Needless to say there was a fair amount of debris left after the night was over. I was outside
the next day when I saw three teenage girls coming out of the park with garbage bags. When I asked they told me they had just “cleaned up the garbage in the park”. I was very impressed with
these three girls from Delta Secondary. I don’t know their names but they know who they are. It restores my faith in some of our young people. Kudos to them!!! Max Scabar
Editor: I would just like to extend a huge and sincere thank you to all those people who - in spite of the challenges of 2020 that continue to affect us all went to such Herculean efforts to bring a little happiness and normality to Ladner for our children
this Halloween. This year was our first Halloween since moving to Ladner in the summer and the amount of enjoyment our one-yearold and four-year-old (ladybug and astronaut, respectively), received from the fantastic decorations and our welcom-
ing, friendly and COVID19-careful neighbours who went to such efforts, was truly heartwarming. It really allowed us all to spend a couple of hours thinking a little less about COVID-19 and a little more about community... and candy. Thank you all. Andy Smith

Pickleball courts should be for everyone Editor: I believe that the Delta Pickleball Association was instrumental in advocating for more courts in Delta and for that I thank the association. Dennison Park has four courts: three are used by the Delta Pickleball Club at prime time leaving only one court for the general public. If you Google Delta Pickleball Association and scroll down you will find that the schedule is very much in the club’s favor with little court time

Delta projects remembering Shirley and ‘Big John’ SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The new pedestrian bridges and pathway connecting Ladner Harbour Park and the south arm marshes conservation area are now complete. According to Delta’s parks department, residents and visitors to the park can now walk the full perimeter of the lagoon and connect to the trail network within the park. Council last fall awarded a contract for the design and construction of the two accessible pedestrian bridges and associated trail improvements. The city had earlier received a bequest of more than $600,000 from the estate of Shirley Ann Bolhuis to complete the footpath around the harbour lagoon and the bridges.
The trail and metal bridges were to be wheelchair accessible and a plaque erected to recognize her gift to the people of Ladner. Bolhuis passed away in 2004. In addition to the lagoon works, which had an estimated $400,000 cost, there was also to be a wheelchair accessible plaza created in Lions Park at the edge of Chilukthan Slough. That had an estimated cost of $80,000. The Lions Park plaza is to be dedicated to the memory of Shirley’s late brother “Big John” Bolhuis who passed away in 2017. A plaque was also to be erected to recognize John, a beloved fixture in the Ladner community and life-long resident. The bridge project has been on the City of Delta’s books since 2009 when the prov-
ince decommissioned the western pedestrian bridge due to its poor condition. The bridge removal limited trail use and despite Delta’s requests, the province was not prepared to reinstate that bridge, citing that funding was unavailable. Initial efforts for the replacement of the western bridge included work in association with the Kiwanis Club of Ladner/Tsawwassen, but the club disbanded and other service clubs were pursuing other initiatives. Ladner Harbour Lagoon is in the Ladner Marsh Conservation Area, which is owned by the province. A report last year to council notes the city has an existing licence agreement for use of the lagoon for the trail and bridges and that agreement expires in 2024.

Delta approves mobility and accessibility committee SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
City council this week approved creating a new Mobility and Accessibility Committee. The committee’s structure will give people with disabilities in Delta the opportunity to provide direct input on new and existing city infrastructure and programs to support mobility and accessibility. A staff report notes that for proposed city capital infrastructure projects, the input could be provided prior to the final design and construction phase

and, where appropriate, before council considers the project. “This process will allow for adjustments to be made at the most suitable point in the process and will enhance City projects for people with disabilities. Other City committees and advisory bodies would also benefit from the perspective of people with disabilities. Therefore, the Transportation Technical Committee and the new Advisory Design Panel will include one member each from the Mobility and Accessibility Committee to further address accessibility issues in those contexts,” the report explains.
The committee will include representation from relevant municipal departments and up to seven members atlarge who live in Delta and experience mobility or accessibility challenges. In addition, the chair, who will be city manager Sean McGill, may also seek representation on the committee from organizations that operate in Delta and have a particular interest in accessibility, mobility or disability issues. Council agreed there should be a separate committee on its own dedicated to dealing with such issues rather than incorporating it within another advisory group, such as the Mayor’s
Task Force on Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism. Delta resident Vincent Miele, an advocate for the disabled, recently requested the city create a new committee to focus on challenges disabled residents face. “This includes lack of full wheelchair access to newer public facilities, transportation, housing, proper parking for persons dependent on mobility devices, full serve gas etc. This too is a form of discrimination and should be addressed as we too have been included in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms since 1982,” wrote Miele.

Students at Cliff Drive Elementary have a new way to play with the recent completion of a natural playground. From planning stages starting midway through 2019, the playground was fully opened for play earlier this month. The project was spearheaded by PAC president Edina Bartell and was completed with the help of several local contractors and parents who lent a hand however they could. “We already have a couple of the standard plastic and metal playgrounds, so we thought that something that just

Ladner parents cheer for teachers IAN JACQUES

Teachers are the vital cogs in the wheel that keep kids safe in school. That was the sentiment of Ladner Elementary parent Megan Simpson who joined with other school parents and students in a cheers for teachers last Friday afternoon. With some parents waving signs of support, others using noise makers and others simply cheering and clapping, the friendly, socially-distanced initiative at the final bell of the day at 2:50 p.m., will hopefully become a regular weekly occurrence. “Teachers are vital, essential workers just like all our healthcare workers,” said Simpson. “I thought this was an easy idea and

Delta Agricultural Society donates $50,000 towards an Echo Ultrasound
Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation is delighted to announce a gift of $50,000 from the Delta Agricultural Society towards Cardiac Care at Delta Hospital. The generous gift, along with other gifts from the community, helped Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation complete a fundraising goal of $297k
to bring an echo ultrasound to Delta Hospital. This will transform cardiac care in the community as this is a brandnew service and piece of equipment. The echo ultrasound plays a crucial role in faster, often lifesaving diagnoses of cardiac distress; it produces threedimensional images of the heart allowing Doctors to make split-
second decisions. Last year, approximately 2,500 residents came to Delta Hospital for cardiac treatment and diagnosis. As Delta grows in population and the demographic ages, it is crucial that Delta Hospital is equipped to handle the cardiac needs of residents, especially when time is of the essence. “We wish to thank

on the health and wellbeing of all Delta residents. We are humbled by their continued support of Delta Hospital and our community.” The Delta Agricultural Society has donated more than $2 million to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation since 1993. Founded in 1888 by a group of local farmers,
the Delta Agricultural Society was established to primarily assist in the improvement of farming practices, land cultivation, and livestock breeding in Delta. The Society has since become a major supporter of the wider Delta community, donating many millions of dollars to community groups, facilities and projects.

Members of the Ladner Legion are coming up with new fundraising ideas to combat the expected losses in donations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One such idea comes from long-time Legion member and photographer Barb Dyck who has created a calendar composed of images taken from around Ladner. The calendars are for sale for $20 and available for purchase at the Legion. Dyck has made calendars for friends in the past, but offered her services to the Legion after hearing about the expected donation losses from the poppy campaign. “The Legion does so much for the community that there’s going to be a lot of things that don’t get donations if we don’t make the money this year,” Dyck said. Some of the photos include floating homes on the Fraser River, Canoe Pass and various public events from 2019.

Minister’s Minute
What changed David’s feelings of hopelessness and discouragement? He looked in a different direction. He looked at what God was going to do, even though he couldn’t see it at the time. The way to overcome emotional stronghold or hopelessness is to fast-forward through the tough times — the battle scenes, to the end. Look toward the place where you surrender your thoughts to the love, grace and faithfulness of God. Whatever is going wrong in your life will not have the last word. God can take a mess and make a miracle if you put your hope in Him. He promises that, “those who hope in Me will not be disappointed.” (Isaiah 49:23 NIV)

I often check a person’s hope meter. Especially if they are struggling emotionally because losing hope is like losing everything. Hope is the belief that my tomorrow will be better than my today. Psalm 42:1 says, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God.” It sounds as if everything is okay with David. But it’s not. Psalm 42:3 “My tears have been my food day and night...” When your tears are your food day and night, that means you are really suffering from hopelessness. Yet, he says he is going to remember the Lord. Psalm 42:8 “The Lord will command His lovingkindness...” God has not done it yet, but David has confidence

Thanks to a recent workshop held at Delta Secondary, the Ladner high school may become home to its very own drumline. The Yamaha sponsored ‘Start the Groove’ workshop was held at DSS’s Genesis Theatre on Tuesday morning. Each member of DSS music teacher Catherine Campbell’s senior band class got to play each instrument that makes up a drum line and learn several basic drum line rhythms. The workshop was led by Michael Beauclerc, an established professional drummer, composer, and Canadian author. During the two-hour workshop Beauclerc instructed and demonstrated for the students on how to play the six snare drums, five bass drums and two tom drums provided during the workshop to make one cohesive sound. Creating a drumline at DSS has been on Campbell’s radar for about two years she says, ever since she went to the Cantando Music Festival and saw Sardis Secondary’s drumline. “I didn’t even know what a drumline was honestly and I saw them doing their thing and I thought ‘that’s incredible!’” she

said. Campbell wasn’t alone though. When she announced the workshop to her students they were unsure of what a drumline was as well. After watching a few videos of drum lines in action though the students felt more inspired. Campbell told the Optimist
that right now she has a mix of different drums at her disposal, but joked that now that the students have had the chance to play the drums provided in the workshop it may be difficult for the students to go back. “I think the big thing will definitely be finding the gear,” she said. “I would love to, I think it
would be fabulous.” Campbell noted that for a full set of drums like the ones provided in the workshop could cost upwards of $26,000. As the drum line workshop went on Campbell said she had several students coming up to her asking when they could start their own.

Ladner is home to Vancouver’s newest drag king champion and LGBTQ+ community ambassador. On Sept. 26 Jenn Curll was crowned Mr. Gay by the Rhinestone Phoenix Charity Foundation, a non-profit organization created in 1980 and are the keepers of the Mr., Ms. and Miss Gay Vancouver titles. The competition, described by Curll as a sort of pageant, tested candidates’ public speaking skills, runway walks and performances all while in drag. Although she refers to herself
Jenn Curll as she/her, Curll was awarded the title of Mr. Gay as she competed as a drag king, not a drag queen. Curll said she decided to take
part in the competition because she could use the title to serve and fundraise for the community. For Curll, her focus is the Delta Pride Society. Although Curll came out in her mid-teens, she became more involved with the LGBTQ+ community in 2018. She says she will use her title to be a positive force and example for Deltans within the community. “Because I grew up with almost no queer influence or mentorship, I have an opportunity to support South Delta and represent for people in South Delta,” Curll said. Working with the Delta Pride
Society Curll hopes to bridge the gap between Vancouver and South Delta by trying to make LGBTQ+ related events more accessible and raise awareness. With National Coming Out Day taking place over the Thanksgiving long weekend, Curll spoke directly to those who have not come out yet and people who may be struggling with the consequences of doing so. “Coming out is for you and that no matter when you do, first of all make sure it’s safe, second of all know that you’re loved and accepted. Whether it’s by the people that already know you or the people you haven’t met yet,” Curll said.

A message from the Delta Teachers’ Association
In a year like no other due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is gratifying that the Optimist is still able to present this special Remembrance Day section. Thanks to the support of the advertisers from our community, this eightpage section is a tribute to those who have served and to those who continue
to serve so that we may all enjoy the freedoms that we might sometimes forget about. On Nov. 11, as we can’t gather as a community, the Optimist will have coverage of the Ladner ceremony on its Facebook page and website. -Ian Jacques, editor/Delta Optimist

Remembrance Dayceremonies closed to the public CAMERON THOMSON
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
This year will be the first time since the Ladner cenotaph was erected in 1921 that there won’t be a public Remembrance Day ceremony held at its base. While the Ladner Legion will be holding a small ceremony on Nov. 11 at the cenotaph in Memorial Park with no more than 30 dignitaries, veterans and city executives, it will not be open to the public. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, representatives from both the Ladner and Tsawwassen legions are urging people to stay home and remember veterans in their own way. Aside from the ceremony’s restrictions and near elimination of the parade, some elements of the ceremony remain unchanged. A piper will still play Amazing Grace, a bugler will still play the Last Post and Reveille, but the ceremony will be missing the snarl of piston engines from the flypast and the Delta Community Choir singing John McCrae’s ‘In Flanders Fields’. After the last wreath is laid at the cenotaph, dignitaries and other guests will go back to the Ladner Legion for lunch. The Legion will close for cleaning and will reopen again for members of the public by 2 p.m. but the space can only hold 48 people due to COVID-19 regulations. “We’re trying to make it as normal as possible,” said Ladner Legion manager Jacky Hillairet. Hillairet recommends that instead of attending a ceremony, people should stand outside their home
The COVID-19 pandemic means no public ceremony at Memorial Park in Ladner this year. and hold their own two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. Bill Belsey president of the Tsawwassen Legion
says that while he is unsure of what Remembrance Day will look like this year, he knows it will be a very different experience from previous ones. “There’s no way we can carry on like we’ve done in the past where we have 150 people in there,” Belsey said, adding the Tsawwassen Legion would only be able to accommodate 40 people due to the pandemic. “It’s certainly going to disappoint a whole bunch of people.” Belsey also noted that many veterans make an extra effort to come out and see their colleagues on Remembrance Day, something that likely won’t happen as much this year. “Given the age of so many of our members the fear is that we may not see them again,” he said. Delta city manager Sean McGill said much of the same can be expected for North Delta this Remembrance Day. “One of the many and biggest negative impacts of COVID-19 is our inability to gather, celebrate and honour those around us in many different ways,” McGill wrote in an email to the Optimist. McGill explained that the City of Delta and the Kennedy Seniors Society are not promoting social gatherings and as a result no formal ceremony at the North Delta Social Heart. He said Mayor George Harvie will provide a virtual message emphasizing the importance of honoring our veterans and will encourage people to take part in their own two minutes of silence and to support for the Royal Canadian Legion poppy campaign.

Delta MP seeks veterans’ stories for her website and newsletter CAMERON THOMSON
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Veterans of the Second World War hailing from Delta have a chance to be recognized by both Delta’s Member of Parliament as well as the constituents of Delta itself. To mark the 75th anniversary since the ending of the Second World War on Sept. 2, 1945, MP Carla Qualtrough has put out a call to Deltans who either participated in the war or who had family members who served. The call is simple, collect information on the veteran in your family and submit their story to the MP’s constituency office. Each veteran’s story will be recognized in a newsletter, which will be sent out in mid-November and will be shown in full on the Heroes Remembered website. The Heroes Remembered initiative is not new to the parliamentarian, having conducted a similar project two years ago for the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War. “This project was extremely successful, encouraging dialogue and remembrance of this important world event, while motivating us to research
our own family histories for stories of relatives who contributed to the war cause,” Qualtrough wrote in an email to the Optimist. “This year marks the 75th anniversary of the ending of WW2 and we are hoping to renew this interest by commemorating our relatives who served in this war. I believe we will find these stories inspiring, especially in this challenging time.” Bernadette Kudzin, Qualtrough’s constituency manager, also spoke to the initiative’s past success saying more submissions were received than could fit inside the 24-page newsletter, giving cause for the creation of the webpage. Kudzin also noted that she expects more submissions this year as the Second World War is not as much of a historical stretch as the First World War. To be featured in the newsletter, submissions must be sent by this Friday, Nov. 6. While the newsletter will be sent after Remembrance Day, the Heroes Remembered webpage can be accessed now at www.carlaqualtroughmp.ca under the Heroes Remembered tab. submissions will be to be added to the website continuously leading up to Nov. 11.
We thank you for your efforts & sacrifices
Canada’s men and women of our Armed Forces, whether veterans or those currently serving, deserve our gratitude. It is because of their sacrifice and efforts that we have the freedoms we cherish today. We owe them a great deal. It’s more than remembrance on this special day, it is our eternal gratitude.

Leading up to Remembrance Day, a local military historian will host a presentation which will keep the names on Ladner’s cenotaph remembered for another year. Peter Broznitsky’s presentation will cover the last two years of the First World War which, according to some historians, saw Canada become a nation. The presentation will look at major First World War campaigns in which Canadians fought in including: Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, and Passchendaele. Broznitsky will also mention several names on the Ladner cenotaph in Memorial Park, which bears the names of men from Ladner who fought and died in some of those major conflicts.
A year again has come to pass as we come together, virtually or in isolation. To remember the sacrifices you have made for us, …a proud and grateful nation.

Born in Vancouver in 1923, Shirley Burnell was only 18 months old when after the sudden death of her father, she and her mother relocated to Japan. A resident at The Waterford in Tsawwassen, Shirley shares first-hand her story of The Second World War that spans the globe from Japan to England and back to Canada. As I was brought up in Japan from the time I was one-year-old, I did not know very much about the rest the world. I graduated from a Catholic school in Yokohama. My mother was an employee at the British Embassy in Tokyo and had gone to work when I heard of the war between Japan, USA and Europe and she was interned immediately. I was apprehended by a Japanese policeman and taken to Tokyo to be with my mother because I was underage and we were interned for eight months. Life was very different to me when I landed in England during the war after a two-month boat trip. The trip to England was a great adventure for a 17/18-year-old. A very nice Japanese ship took us up through the Sundra Strait across the Indian Ocean to Mozambique in Portugese East Africa where we were
exchanged for the Japanese being returned to Japan (or their homeland). From Portuguese East Africa we were taken by an Egyptian cruise ship, hardly suitable for the trip down under South Africa up past Ireland into Liverpool. We were greeted cordially and given some clothes and then my mother and I went into London where she and I both ended up working for the British Intelligence department. Finding “digs” and trying to get established was not easy because of my age, pay was low but we found “digs” on a cobble paved street. Ours was a mews where horses would go to have their hooves groomed. This caused a very obnoxious odor which filled the building. We had one large room with two beds, dresser and a jet for gas coming up through the floor! This was our stove where we cooked mostly with a double boiler. The “stove” was fed by shillings, which had to be fed when the jet slowed up. To make life more interesting, the box for the money was situated on top of the door, so when it was time, there was always a rush about on top of a chair with money in hand. CONTINUED: see Page 23

Veteran recalls her time in Europe CONTINUED from Page 22 We had one window, which looked out onto a brick wall, one bathroom down the hall comprised of a toilet and hand basin to be shared by all. Now bathing was a different story. After dinner at the end of the week mom and I would walk over to the public bath house where we “bought” our bath water. We both worked hard trying to meet people but it was not easy due to the “black out” every night and many restrictions. Mother met an old friend in a town close by and moved in with her. The same time I saw an advertisement recruiting Canadian girls to join the Canadian Army in London, so I did and became a CWAC (Canadian Women’s Army Corp.). I worked again in intelligence, only this time at Canada House in Trafalgar Square. My life changed a lot then, meeting new people who ended up as life-long friends, and I had very good accommodation, a newly built apartment right near Hyde Park in London. We were regimented and did all the Army routines which was good. We had many scary times, one in particular remains in my mind very clearly. We were in a top floor office
in Canada House and more than once saw a doodlebug fly by our window. A doodlebug was a bomb guided by its head officer (our enemy) on a pattern past our window at eye level before mechanically the motor shuts off and dives down and detonates. It sounded like a plane until ready to drop then silence. That is when everyone dove under our metal desks and waited for the explosion. Luckily for us the bombs did not veer from their designed path. The next bomb was a larger one and would go deeper and cause wider damage. These scary moments were daily until we got on the winning side. The time passed, our boys pushed ever so hard and we finally saw the end arrive on May 8, 1945. Our 93 company stayed until May 1946, then were sent to Halifax on the Ile de France where I visited for a month before travelling across Canada by train to get my medical discharge in Vancouver. I married an airman in the Canadian Forces a few years later and started a whole new life. It was a worrisome time in my life, the incarceration, the war and all the changes that took place were educational as well as teaching me one has to take what comes.

Remembrance Day
Interact students place crosses of remembrance Once again, South Delta Secondary Interact Club members, with the help of Tsawwassen Rotarians, placed more than 40 white crosses along 56th St. Monday afternoon. It’s a simple reminder of the sacrifices made by so many and perhaps all the more poignant this year when the usual Remembrance Day community observances have to be cancelled. In order to remain safely distanced, a small-
er group of students than in the past from the SDSS Interact Club placed dozens of small white crosses on the lawn at the Kiwanis Longhouse in Tsawwassen to mark Remembrance Day. Bearing the names of fallen soldiers, as well as a poppy for each, the crosses honour Delta veterans of past wars. A number of passersby stopped to offer thanks while they were at work and even a few drivers honked in apprecia-
tion, prompting Interact Club co-president Joelle Hamilton to say, “I’m really glad that we’re still able to put this together this year. It feels good that we can show our community and veterans that we don’t take their sacrifices for granted.” Fellow Grade 12 student and co-president Devon Matson said, “the crosses make us reflect and compare today’s challenges and restrictions around COVID-19 and contrast it with what
happened in a conflict like The Second World War. It really changes our perspective when you think about it that way.” The Interact students will also participate in the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen’s virtual Remembrance Day themed meeting this week and, like all SDSS students, will observe ceremonies at school. Interact clubs are Rotary International service clubs for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact

may not be imagining it. With so much laundry being generated, homeowners may want to consider paying extra attention to the space in the house where their clothing is being cleansed. Laundry room renovations may not top homeowners’ priority lists, but it may be time to give these rooms another look. Assess your equipment If your appliances are aging, a laundry room renovation can start with an investment in new appliances. New models have large capacity loads, tend to be energy-efficient and could have innovative features that help fit with your laundry lifestyle. Purchasing front-loading models also can free up design space, as you can install a counter directly above the units, saving room for other items like drying racks.
Figure out your room needs A laundry room need not be limited to laundry only. Many homeowners make large laundry rooms catch-all spaces that can serve as utility or mud rooms, pantry overflows, or off-season storage areas. Consider the functions you want the room to serve and include those ideas in your designs. Add some natural light If possible, include a window in your laundry room. Natural light can help make the room more enjoyable. It also can help you identify stains on clothes that need to be addressed and make it easier to fold matching items like socks. Think about a utility sink Many washing machines drain out directly to waste pipes in the floor or wall, but you

Delta is looking to bring in local voices to comment on design projects within the city. The idea of an advisory design panel is not new to Delta, as the previous panel was dissolved on Jan. 28, 2019. Since that time, according to the report discussed by council at its Oct. 5th meeting, there has been renewed interest in establishing a new, refreshed version. In the staff report, the panel was described as having the aim of contributing expertise from a range of disciplines to enhance the quality of design for certain development projects in Delta. Coun. Lois Jackson was the first to comment on the composition of experts that would be included in the new panel, saying she would like to see some non-professionals and people from the
community. “I think that was one of the flaws with our past design panel,” Jackson said. “We had wonderful people there but they weren’t from here.” Jackson also mentioned White Rock council’s design panel, which includes three members of the community and the City of Langley’s design panel, which includes members from the community and members of local law enforcement. Jackson suggested these ideas be taken into consideration for the new design panel as well as including a school board representative. Mayor George Harvie mentioned that city manager Sean McGill is looking to create a disability committee for the city and that a member from that committee should also sit on the design team. Ultimately the report was sent back to city staff for revision for focus on local inclusion and will be brought back for further discussion in the coming weeks.

Tips to prepare for window replacement Winter is coming, and for millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm. Inefficient or aging housing materials may compromise your ability to do just that. Drafts from doors, poorly protected attics and basements and aging windows may force heating systems to work extra hard to maintain interior temperatures. Replacing old windows can make a home quieter by blocking out exterior noises. Consumer Reports also notes that new windows are often easier to clean and maintain than older varieties. Many homeowners are interested in
replacing their windows, but may not know where to start. These guidelines can help the process along: 1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows. When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Questions can include: How long will the project take? Will I need to remain home during the process? Do you discard of old debris? What is the protocol for installation during inclement weather? 2. Research permits. Most home renovation projects need to be approved by the local municipality. Go
to the permit office and find out the requirements. Some window contractors will include securing permits in the cost of the project. After the project is completed, an inspector will come by and ensure the work was done according to code. 3. Change up the appearance. Look at the type of hardware you have around the home and other fixtures. Choose windows that have locks or latches that can match those features for continuity of style. Think about choosing a different style or frame color of the window, or a different type of window to improve efficiency and function. 4. Research top window manufacturers. It’s tempting to purchase windows based on price alone, but
replacement windows are often a decision that only has to be made once or twice for the life of the home. Invest in durable windows that will have staying power. Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews on various window brands and can help homeowners make sound decisions. 5. Prepare for installation. Clear pathways, remove window treatments and disconnect window alarm systems. Keep pets and children away from work areas. Replacement windows can be a smart investment. New windows can improve the look of a home, reduce heating costs and can keep interior spaces comfortable. -Metro Creative
Types of home insulation and where to install them
When thinking about renovating their homes, homeowners may imagine changing wall colors, expanding room sizes or upgrading appliances and fixtures. However, unless people take inventory of the less glamourous components of the home, other improvements may be for naught.
A home insulation project certainly doesn’t offer the wow factor of a kitchen remodel, but insulation serves a vital function in the house that helps keep people comfortable and reduces energy consumption. Insulation is typically placed in areas where air escapes, such as between the stud cavities inside the
walls and in the attic, and serves to slow and reduce heat transfer. By improving home insulation, homeowners can make their homes more comfortable, consistent and efficient. Here are some ideas: Blanket batts and rolls Blanket batts and rolls typically are constructed with fiberglass, so proper safety gear, such as a mask and gloves, is needed when handling them. Installing this type of insulation is relatively easy since the materials are designed to fit the standard width between studs, rafters and floor joists. Loose fill Loose fill is usually made of fiberglass or cellulose (recycled paper fiber). It is blown or sprayed into place with pneumatic equipment. Loose fill can be ideal for hard-to-reach areas in attics or inside
wall cavities. It’s good for adding insulation to irregularly shaped areas. This is a job best left to professionals. Sprayed foam Sprayed foam is just as the name implies, a foam made from polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, cementitious, or other materials that are applied by a spray container. DIYers who need only small applications can use canned products. Large quantities are pressuresprayed by professionals. Foam board/rigid foam panels Ideal for unfinished walls, such as basement or foundation walls, floors and ceilings, these are boards of polyurethane or polystyrene. Foam boards tend to reduce energy consumption more effectively than other types of insulation. -Metro Creative

YOUR HOME: SANCTUARY, OFFICE,
Holiday gifts that cater to home improvement ideas People have spent more time at home in 2020 than they likely have in years past. This has provided homeowners with plenty of time to ponder potential upgrades to their homes. After taking inventory of their lifestyles, surroundings and furnishings, people have embarked on construction projects or home interior design renovations in record numbers. Holiday gifts that cater to projects around the house are likely to be highly valued this holiday season. Here are some ideas for home improvementrelated gifts. Home improvement retailer gift card: Home improvement centers are onestop shopping for do-it-yourselfers. To help offset the cost of supplies, giftgivers can give a gift card to a neighborhood hardware store. Magazine subscription: There are plenty of ideas on the internet, but a subscription to a home remodeling or interior design magazine puts inspiration right in homeowners’ hands. Pages can be marked or cut out and used on idea boards. Tools and supplies: Homeowners
just starting out may benefit from the basics. Stores often sell starter tool kits that can be used in home improvement-themed baskets. Experienced DIYers may have a special tool in mind that is outside their budget right now, like a chop saw or cordless power drill. Purchasing one of these items can help projects move along more smoothly. Expert consultation: Who can’t use a little help with their home remodeling efforts? Give the gift of a consultation from an interior designer or professional contractor to help complete plans that may be a little out of reach for the average DIYer. Big-ticket item: Some friends and family members may want to pool their resources and offer loved ones an over-the-top gift. This can include a backyard playset for children, a storage shed, a pool installation, or even a new appliance package. Gift ideas are endless and only limited by budget. Room re-do: All it may take is some new linens or accents to transform a room. From throw pillows to curtains to wall art, give the gift of an easy room makeover. -Metro Creative

A flight Svejkovsky will neverforget Point Roberts forward selected in NHL draft by Penguins while en route to Michigan MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Lukas Svejkovsky was somewhere in US airspace when one of the biggest moments of his hockey career unfolded. The 18-year-old Point Roberts native was about 2.5 hours en route to Michigan when he was selected in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Penguins in last month’s NHL Entry Draft. Svejkovsky was on his way to the Team USA Selection Camp in Plymouth for the 2021 IHF World Junior Hockey Championships. “I told my mom I needed a wifi pass. I was trying to follow the draft on the plane but the service wasn’t great and it was kind of behind (real time),” said Svejkovsky. “All my buddies were texting me and I couldn’t even upload the nhl.com page so I didn’t even know where I went or anything like that until 10 minutes later. It was a crazy day but super exciting obviously. I couldn’t wait to land and call my parents.” The trip back east wasn’t routine either thanks to COVID-19 restrictions. With his father Yogi being a renowned skills instructor in Metro Vancouver and his siblings also playing hockey, the family made the decision to relocate to Tsawwassen to eliminate cross-border travel. Lukas’ trek to Michigan included a flight from YVR to Seattle then heading to Plymouth where the team was in a “bubble” environment for the entire six days. It was his first time attending a U21 USA camp and it’s something he won’t soon forget regardless if he makes the roster of what’s expected to be a very strong American team. He was among 42 players invited,

Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick and Team USA prospect Lukas Svejkovsky is keeping sharp these days at junior skils development sessions being run at Planet ice. including 15 that were selected 2020 NHL draft. “I have done some U16 and U17 stuff but this was my first U21 camp and it was a great experience. Such high class and the players treated so well,” continued Svejkovsky. “It was a real honour to be there in the
first place. Lots of great talent there and it was fun competing with those guys. Just a real good week. “I think they said the decision will be made around the American Thanksgiving. Whatever happens I’m looking forward to it.”
It’s shaping up to be a busy December for Svejkovsky. The Western Hockey League recently announced its regular season will begin Jan. 8 with players reporting to training camp two weeks prior. He will be entering his first full season with the Medicine Tigers
after being traded from the Vancouver Giants midway through the 2010-20 campaign. He managed 28 points in 34 games, including 13 goals. The Tigers are coming off a 41-19-2 season. “I’m really looking forward to it. I think we will have a really good team again with a lot of young core guys coming back,” he said. “I’m also ready take more of a leadership role with the team too.” Beside a brief stint with Wenatchee Wild of the BC Hockey League, Svejkovsky had spent his entire career in the Lower Mainland. Now he has experienced junior hockey in a small prairie town. “The first week I was traded there it was minus 20 and my lips were so chapped,” he laughed. “It’s a really good thing for any player to experience for sure. A lot of people look up to you like the younger players and you’re well known around town as well. You’re representing the team wherever you go and have to be a good role model in the community. It’s different than Vancouver but I really like it either way.” For now, Svejkovsky continues to work hard on and off the ice, including skill development sessions with other junior players at Planet Ice, led by his dad. It’s a preparation for a potential stretch that also could include his first NHL training camp in the new year. “All I can do is keep training and working hard on the ice and in the gym. Everything else is out of my control right now,” he added. “It’s been a long summer (of training) but I think it’s better for some of the guys. They are getting more time to get strong and faster.”

LAPORTE, Keith C. October 27, 1950 − November 11, 2019 I can’t imagine that it is real that we have lived this year without you. Sometimes it feels like forever since you have been here by our sides, listening to your stories and wild tales, and other times, it seems like it was just a few weeks or a month ago; but all I know for sure is, when we suddenly lost you, the world changed forever. The world was a better place for just having you in it; between your passing, Covid, the fires it just keeps getting more and more complex. We strive to remember all the good times you created and shared with that infectious smile and laughter, the examples you set − such a wonderful husband, father, brother, son, grandfather, friend, and human being who was constantly paying it forward and doing amazing things for others and yet still holding your family close. We will try to continue with your high standard of values and keep up the traditions that were so special to you. We are trying to continue to make you proud, but it sure is tough without your constant recognition of our accomplishments. You were always there for anyone around you, and for others you barely knew. We were so fortunate to have had you in our lives and note now, even more, how special a person you were to all. Love you and miss you so much. − The LaPorte Family
OBITUARIES
Dad was self taught and very talented in many ways. He had a knack for being able build or fix anything whether it was carpentry, electrical, mechanical etc, it was something we always marveled at. In his younger years he belonged to the Delta Figure Skating club where he participated in the annual ice show. He enjoyed bowling as well as golf which he played well into his eighties. Dad also loved betting on the ponies, starting at Patterson Park in the sixties and ending up in Cloverdale.

Dad was always at his happiest around his family, he would absolutely light up when either seeing or talking about his grandchildren. We will dearly miss his easy going manner and the grin he always seemed to have on his face. A special thanks to Deltaview, specifically Eagle Point for the amazing and compassionate care that they gave both Dad and Elsie over the years. There will be no service.
Daughter Jennifer, son-in-law David, son Mark, and daughter-in-law Nicole, as well as six grandchildren, are thriving on all levels. So are sister-in-law Ellen and several nieces and grandnieces. Finally, many of Mary’s soul sisters (who know who they are) continue their shared pursuit of Peace, Love, and Joy.
TATE, Patricia Anne February 5, 1941 - October 25, 2020 It is with profound sorrow we passing of Pat on October 25, 2020.
announce
the
She will be greatly missed by Bob, her husband of 53 years, as well as her son James (Janet) and daughter Katherine (Peter). Also, her 5 grandchildren who were the delight of her life: Daniel, Marcus, Alex, Lauren, and Jessica. Her brother Ted (Joan) was also very important to her.
ADAMS, Andrew Frederick October 28, 1927 - November 1, 2020 Dad passed away peacefully on November 1st, unfortunately not surrounded by family, but not alone. He was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan, one of 16 children. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Elsie, stepson Michael, parents Wendilen and Mary, sisters Clementine, Eva, Mary, Bertha and Kay, brothers John, Mike, Joe, Eddie, Leo and Don. He is survived by son Dave (Donna), Dean, step daughters Leslie (Dave) and Carol (Lazslo), grandchildren Meghan (Kevin), Rebecca (Dave), Myles, Collin (Kyra), Hayley, Marshall (Carla) and great-grandchildren Emma, Alana, Tyson and Olivia.
Mary was born and lived on three dairy farms in the Fraser Valley before moving to Vancouver to enter the Vancouver General Hospital Nursing School, where she graduated in 1957. A family was raised in Michigan, where she also completed a bachelor of arts in communications and upgraded her nursing skills working in the intensive care arena. Returning to Canada in 1990, she continued in the intensive care area while exploring and utilizing complementary energy medicine on several levels. Her spiritual journey took her to Peru, India and Egypt.
Pat was born in Edmonton and grew up in Saskatoon. She then lived for a decade in Montreal followed by a further ten years in Toronto before settling in Tsawwassen in 1977.
HILL, Ruth E. January 27, 1925 − October 25, 2020 Sadly we announce the passing of Ruth Hill at the age of 95. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Christine Naysmith (David); grandsons, Andrew (Tracy) Richard (Simone); and her great− grandchildren, Hannah, Caleb, Luke, Lydia, Joel, Claire, Alice and Michelle. Ruth was born and raised in Germany and was trained as a telephonist during WWII. She met Peter, the love of her life and married him in 1947 and moved to England where they lived happily for 40 years before emigrating to Canada to be with their family. Peter sadly died in 1994 and Ruth who had only lived here for 6 years set about making a life for herself. She started swimming at the Ladner Leisure Centre every day with her friend Lorraine until she reached the grand old age of 90. She also played bridge at McKee house for many years but what gave her the most pleasure was to dress up in her glitter and spend the weekend with her daughter at the Silver Reef where she won oh so many jackpots. Ruth (mum, nan, omi) loved her family above everything and she will be in our hearts forever. There will be no service or celebration of life at this time due to these difficult Covid times.
Pat had three distinct and successful careers over the years. In the early 60s, she was one of the first students to graduate from the newly established B.Sc. (Nursing) program at McGill University and she worked as a nurse for the next 15 years. Following the move to the west coast, Pat and Bob formed and operated a golf distribution business for the next 20 years. She then embarked on a 20 year real estate career, from which she retired in 2015. She was also involved with online marketing, owning and managing three websites. Pat loved golf. She loved to play it, practice it, study it, and follow the careers of the best players. She was a 25 year member of Beach Grove Golf Club. She was the long time treasurer of the Delta branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women. She was always active in the community she loved. Because of the current conditions, there will be no service at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the bursary funds of the Delta Branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women which Pat administered. Please contact CFUW Director Cheryl McTait for information on how to donate: Cmctait43@gmail.com www.mbfuneralsbc.com/obituary/Patricia-Tate to send a personal condolence.

ROSS, Douglas Andrew September 1, 1970 - October 20, 2020 CHRUMKA, Joseph February 17, 1927 to October 25, 2020 BEHARRELL, Lester Leon March 8, 1925 - October 31, 2020 It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of our father, Lester on Saturday, October 31, 2020. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Joan, along with his children; Charlie (Wendy), Brian (Gail), Ernie (Barbara), Dave (Ella), and daughter Tracey, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lester was born in Matsqui, BC, and moved with his family to Ladner in 1928, where they resided on a farm in East Delta for 40 years. After retiring from farming, Les and Joan traveled a lot, eventually settling in Lac La Hache, BC, for many years and then moving to Merritt, where Joan still resides. Les (Dad) will greatly missed by family and friends from Ladner and Lac La Hache. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice, in memory of Lester. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, due to Covid.
HUTTON-POTTS, Reginald George January 5, 1942 - October 28, 2020 Reg entered Grade 9 at University Hill School in the fall of 1957, after his family had moved to Vancouver from Dawson Creek. He had flaming red hair and sported a black leather jacket. Over the next 4 years he was a budding social convenor and established himself as a friend to all, a skill that he kept for the rest of his life. After graduating from Uhill in 1960, he entered UBC. Over the next several years he earned a BA after having done courses at UBC, CW Post in New York City, and the University of Oregon. He enjoyed the ride. One of Reg’s first jobs was as a youth worker at Alma House in Kitsilano. This provided lots of experience with troubled youth. These experiences probably contributed to Reg’s empathy for others. After an extensive tour in Europe with his girlfriend of the day, Reg came back to BC and purchased land on Saturna Island. There he built his first home and in the process, acquired the home building skills that would serve him well for the rest of his working life.
It is with great sadness the family of Joseph (Joe) Chrumka announces that he passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 25th, after enjoying a long and happy life. He was loved and respected by his large family and his many friends. Joe is survived by: his children Kathy (John), Karol (Gary), Allan and Gordon (Jane); grandchildren Koral, Shane (Brittany), Graeme, Jason and Andrew; great-grandchildren Stanley and Ellie and his siblings Paul (Stephanie), Ellen (Brian - deceased), and Albert (Karen) and their families. He was predeceased by his loving wife Agnes, his daughter Tricia, his parents Karol and Maria, and his brother Mel. Dad was also very close to Agnes’ family: her parents Ewen and Catherine (both deceased), Gordon (Bernice - both deceased), Kay (George - both deceased), Ewen (deceased), and Sandra (Barry). Also, many nieces and nephews were very close to his heart. Born in Czechoslovakia, Joe came to Canada with his mother at the age of 3 where he was reunited with his father, growing up in Tilley, AB. He later settled in Taber, AB, where he met and married Agnes and started their family. In 1968, they relocated to Tsawwassen, BC. Having family around was an important part of Joe’s and Agnes’s lives as the house on 6th Avenue was a hub for over 40 years to celebrate birthdays, holidays or special events. Easing into retirement, he developed culinary skills to the surprise and enjoyment of us all. Joe enjoyed a career that spanned over 40 years with Empress/Lucerne Foods. He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus, and active member of Sacred Heart Church. As an avid golfer, he had to wait ‘till his late 80’s to get a Hole-in-One. A notice of a Funeral Mass and a Celebration of Life in memory of Joe, will follow when Covid-19 precautions allow. As he supported a wide range of charities, those who so desire can make a memorial donation to a charity of their choice. Online condolences can be made at www.deltafuneral.ca whom have been entrusted with the arrangements. Delta Funeral Home 604-946-6040

Doug was born in Richmond and grew up in Tsawwassen, where he and Carolyn built a beautiful life together. They became part of an amazing community that has embraced Carolyn and the boys with their unending love and support. Doug played hockey with South Delta from the age of six and spent many years coaching his sons in the very same association. He was a family man above all, and raising his sons with Carolyn was the joy of his life. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and camping. Doug was a skilled Journeyman Carpenter and together with his friend and partner, Tyler they started a successful construction company, Bayview Construction. He was a kind, caring, loving and generous man who will be missed by all. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral service is by invitation only, however we welcome anyone to attend virtually using the following link: http://www.livememorialservices.com/Home/Servi ceDetail/7374 “And if I go while you’re still here, know that I live on. He left behind four children Taylor, Caralyn, Tammy and Scott and a much loved grandson Logan, and Layla his daughter in-law, not to mention the millions of friends who I know will miss him. Throughout his time on Dunbar he acquired the title (The Mayor of Dunbar) a true testament as to the quality of his nature. His friends were his hobbies, he loved baseball, hockey and Monday night football. He was surrounded by his friends while enjoying these hobbies. No one will miss him more, than his wife. BAKER, William (Bill) August 10, 1930 - October 24, 2020 Sadly and unexpectedly Bill passed away at home in the arms of his devoted wife Celia of sixty years.
Blessed to have a loving family, son Keith (Michelle), daughter Yvonne (Steve Morrison), his six grandchildren, Jamie, Kevin, Donald, Ross, Gloria, Lucas, and one great grandchild, Effie, have been the greatest pleasure in Bill’s life. They were always ready to be by his side in times of need and happy celebrations. Survived by his twin brother Charlie (wife Eileen) and their family in Ontario. Bill and Charlie and three siblings grew up on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, farming, fishing and logging in their young years. Bill and his wife Celia moved to B.C. in 1960 and raised their two children in Tsawwassen. Bill shared his love of fishing, golfing, camping and rockhounding with his family and friends and winter skiing. As age caught up with him, Kin Village was his daily ‘workout’ lawn bowling and playing snooker with his pals. A life so fully enjoyed, happy and contented Bill will always be in our hearts and greatly missed. Online condolences can be made at www.deltafuneral.ca Delta Funeral Home 604-946-6040
