IIO clears Delta police of wrongdoing in May incident IAN JACQUES

B.C.’s civilian watchdog has cleared Delta police of any wrongdoing in connection to an incident that occurred near the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal on May 29 of this year. After nearly a seven-month

investigation, the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) released its public report on Friday morning into the events of that night when DPD officers were called to investigate the theft of a taxi on the ferry causeway in Tsawwassen. The suspect in the taxi theft died during the incident, and

since his death occurred in connection with the action of police officers, it was investigated independently by the IIO. In the report, the IIO concluded that despite all attempts to save his life, the affected person (AP) died of his own self-inflicted wounds. This conclusion was based on evi-

dence collected from 15 civilian witnesses, video, audio recordings, autopsy reports and more. The IIO reported that the first responding police officer involved in the incident acted lawfully, in execution of his duty, when he attempted to arrest the suspect for stealing

the taxi, among other offences. The suspect was observed by police travelling at a high rate of speed and committed further offences as he approached police, including almost hitting the officer and his vehicle with the stolen taxi. DPD: see Page 5

Business case for Massey Tunnel replacement coming soon SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The business case for the preferred option to replace the George Massey Tunnel is expected in the coming days. That’s according to the Ministry of Transportation, which notes once it has been received, cabinet will take the time necessary to do a thorough review. The ministry earlier this year unveiled two replacement options, one being an immersed eight-lane tunnel and the other being a long-span bridge with the same number of lanes. Both would have dedicated transit lanes. Last year, a task force of Metro Vancouver mayors endorsed an eight-lane immersed tunnel proposal, but the provincial government has the final say. During this year’s provincial election, Delta South New Democrat candidate Bruce Reid told the Optimist that while plans haven’t been finalized, all the information that he’d been able to gather indicated that “it’s 95 per cent” the new tunnel option would likely be selected. Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon also pledged an NDP government would get a new crossing built quickly. The opposition Liberals said last week that they’re raising further concerns about what they’re calling the NDP’s mis-

A tunnel project would have an estimated three-year environmental review and require five years of construction. management of the replacement after newly-appointed Transportation Minister Rob Fleming failed to confirm whether a replacement of any kind will be built within the next decade. The business case has not been made public and during the provincial election campaign, the NDP also promised that federal funding would be in place by the end of this year, say the Liberals, adding there have been no updates on the status of that funding. “Commuters in Delta and

other communities south of the Fraser have been waiting years for a replacement to the congested and seismically-unsafe Massey Tunnel,” said Delta South Liberal MLA Ian Paton. “It is extremely concerning that after making more promises to my community during the election, all signs point to the NDP further delaying this project. A Massey Tunnel replacement is long overdue, and it is time for this government to honour its commitments to this region.” The Green-backed New Democrat government, after

the previous provincial election, announced the previous Liberal government’s George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project was cancelled. It was a new 10-lane bridge project with associated highway works, a project that had gotten underway just prior to the last provincial election and scheduled for completion in 2022. In the interim, $40 million in safety improvements are now underway inside the existing aging tunnel. That project is scheduled to be complete by spring 2021.

Both sides in the heated battle for control of the Delta Hospice Society are locked in a fight to sign up members ahead of the next annual general meeting. The current board of the society has reportedly launched a nationwide membership drive, appealing to all Canadians who oppose euthanasia. The Campaign Life Coalition has joined in by encouraging Canadians to pay the $10 membership, noting those who sign up to be a voting member don’t have to be B.C. residents. “Changing its character to become an officially Christian organization is the only way for this British Columbia hospice to escape the provincial NDP government’s plan

A message from our Delta MP

Hon. Carla Qualtrough The holidays are here and with them a time of renewed hope and optimism. As the Member of Parliament for Delta, I have seen kindness, generosity and support for one another like never before during this pandemic. As we look to 2021,we know that better days are coming. There are no greater heroes in this pandemic than our frontline healthcare workers and other essential workers. You have kept our community safe, fed our families, and supported our most vulnerable citizens. We are forever grateful. Our federal emergency response measures have supported families, small businesses, young people, persons with disabilities and seniors. In fact, 8 of every 10 dollars spent in Canada to fight COVID-19 and support Canadians have been spent by the federal government. These are the programs you relied on to get through this crisis: to help you put food on the table, aafford your rent, save your small business, or keep your job.

We have also been working hard on the public health response. To date, we have secured billions of pieces of personal protective equipment and tens of millions of rapid test kits. We have signed deals for hundreds of millions of doses of the seven leading vaccine candidates, with Canada now having the most diverse vaccine portfolio of any country. Health Canada has approved the first vaccine, which has arrived in Canada. Canadians are being vaccinated. While this is great news, we must continue to follow public health guidance, by wearing masks, washing our hands, and sticking to our households. We do this to thank our frontline workers and protect our seniors. Our support will continue. A few weeks ago Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland outlined our priorities moving forward in the Fall Economic Statement. These include helping families with young children by temporarily boosting the Canada Child Benefit up to $1,200 in 2021 per child under six. For young Canadians, we are eliminating interest on Canada Student Loans for a year. For small businesses and

to force it to commit euthanasia and suicide on its patients,” stated Jeff Gunnarson, national president of Campaign Life Coalition. The citizens’ group Take Back Delta Hospice, meanwhile, is calling on Delta residents to sign up as members “to put a stop to the recklessness demonstrated by this Board of Directors. We must ensure that Supportive Care services remain intact today and for future generations.” The group’s Chris Pettypiece told the Optimist in a previous interview they’ve talked to hundreds of people who are upset about what’s been happening to their hospice. He said his group will continue to reach out to educate the community on how it can get involved. The B.C. Court of

Appeal last week denied the current board’s request for a stay of proceedings while it seeks leave to appeal a recent judgment against it to the Supreme Court of Canada. The B.C. Court of Appeal last month dismissed an appeal by the board, which was attempting to block membership applications to the society. Wanting to change the society’s constitution to be Christian-based and have a membership meeting to approve the change, the board is opposed to providing the legal procedure medical assistance in dying (MAiD). A petition to the courts by Pettypiece, Sharon Farrish and former board president Jim Levin blocked that meeting. For more on this story see: www.delta-optimist. com.

workers, we are increasing the rate of the wage subsidy. To help provinces and territories protect residents in long-term care and support infection prevention and control, we are investing up to $1 billion for a Safe Long-term Care Fund. We are also investing in climate action and in support of hard-hit industries like tourism. Although we are in for a challenging winter, winte there is an end to this crisis in sight. Know that my team and I are here to support you in any way we can. Happy holidays! Please stay safe.

December 17, 2020 The Delta Optimist A5 DPD: from Page 1 The ‘near miss’ was verified independently by two civilian witnesses. Witnesses also verified hearing police issue commands such as “get on the ground,” “drop the knife” and “put your weapons away and get on the ground.” De-escalation attempts continued for over 15 minutes. The IIO determined “it was necessary and appropriate for officers to use force in an effort to get AP to drop the weapons and also to prevent him from inflicting further harm to himself.” The autopsy reported stated that AP’s cause of death was sharp force, self-inflicted injuries of the neck, damaging carotid arteries and jugular veins. The injuries resulted in a massive hemorrhage and AP’s death. The toxicology report indicated that AP had methamphetamine in his system. There were no other significant conditions that contributed to AP’s death, according to the autopsy report. “Once officers could move in safely, they did so and administered first aid in an attempt to save AP,” wrote Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald in the report. “Accordingly, as the Chief Civilian Director of the IIO, I do not consider that there are reasonable grounds to believe that an officer may have committed an offence under any enactment and therefore the matter will not be referred to Crown counsel for consideration of charges.” DPD Chief Neil Dubord said he wanted to thank the IIO for their diligent and thorough work on this investigation, and the public for their patience, in allowing this work to proceed. “I also want to express condolences on behalf of the department to the family and loved ones of the man who died in this incident,” said Dubord. “Even though our officer’s actions did not contribute to this man’s death, incidents such as this have a lasting impact on the officers who respond.”

Delta council this week gave preliminary approval to a new urban interface agriculture zoning bylaw that would regulate farm uses at a controversial Tsawwassen property. To be discussed at a public hearing in early 2021, the bylaw is squarely aimed at stopping the outdoor industrial hemp grow operation in the 5700-block of 6th Avenue, a 18-hectare (45-acre) site formerly referred to as the Guichon property, but now owned by a numbered company. The property, immediately east of the Forest by the Bay subdivision and adjacent to the Southlands and Beach Grove Golf Club, has a licence from Health Canada that allows the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp. The city has been flooded with complaints from residents about the operation, which city officials say received its licence without consultation with municipal government, including whether the operation would conform to current zoning. More stringent than a bylaw that had originally been considered for the

site two years earlier, the regulations specially sets out additional prohibited activities such as the growing of industrial hemp, cannabis and even the construction of greenhouses. According to Delta staff, the bylaw is aimed at finding a balance between maintaining the viability of farming as a business on the property while responding to concerns of neighbouring property owners. Restriction of farm uses at an urban/ agricultural interface has been an established practice in Delta since council adopted the A 1 Zone in 2006, which included an “edge planning area” with special restrictions, staff also note. Having written to Federal Minister of Health Patty Hajdu about Delta’s concerns, Mayor George Harvie said he’s confident the bylaw will stand up to any legal challenge. Staff note the bylaw should stand because the property is not on the provincial Agricultural Land Reserve and Delta has the authority necessary to rezone the property without the owner’s consent. Staff add the city is not required to compensate an owner if their property is considered to be “down-zoned.”

Delta asking for more detailed COVID-19 data Mayor calling on province once again to release community-specific data SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control is now releasing more detailed data on the spread of COVID-19. As of last Thursday, data is reported by local health area on a weekly basis, numbers that were previously only reported monthly. The first map showing active cases, for the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, indicates Delta has 208 confirmed cases, while neighbouring Richmond has 134 and Surrey has 1,588. The data, however, still doesn’t break down Delta’s numbers by the

communities of Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta. That data is reported at the specific community-level for the City of Vancouver. According to the latest monthly map which shows cumulative cases, from January to November, Delta had 1,331 cases, exceeding Richmond which had 944 cases but nowhere near Surrey which had 10,479 cases. In a recent letter to Premier John Horgan, Mayor George Harvie reiterated Delta and other Fraser Health communities’ request for the province to release more community-specific data

on coronavirus infections. “As municipalities, we are committed and uniquely positioned to supporting senior governments, residents, businesses and other stakeholders during the challenges of the pandemic. To perform these functions effectively, we need more granular and frequent data,” Harvie wrote. He also noted more detailed local COVID-19 data would help guide city decision making and resource allocation while working with businesses and community organizations as they try to stay open, economically viable but safe.

n the past week or so, you probably noticed a change to the Optimist website. On Dec. 3, our website received a new look and as a result, it is now easier to review content on your mobile devices and other platforms. These changes have been in the works for months, as our web developers have been working hard behind the scenes to prepare our newsrooms for the switch over. In the past few weeks, seven Lower Mainland papers (Richmond News, Tri-City News, Burnaby Now, New West Record, North Shore News, Bowen Island Undercurrent and the Optimist) all made the switch to new platforms, joining Vancouver is Awesome and the Pique News Magazine who made the switch late last year. Our focus at the Optimist, will continue to be on local news, community events, sports and arts and entertainment, but now you will be seeing more content from our other markets as well as access to national and world news through our partners at Canadian Press. Our website is also an opportunity to enhance your overall reading experience of the Optimist. If you are a loyal print reader, I thank you for your continued support, but I also encourage you to visit our website often. Our newsroom is constantly updating our website with content that sometimes will not make our Thursday print edition or in many cases, the story will appear online first and might not make the print edition for several editions. I’m asked many times when we receive a letter, or a submission from the public, that they saw the item online, but when will it be in print? And while we strive to get everything in print sometimes that just is not possible, so that’s why checking us out at www.delta-optimist.com is so important. Enjoy our new look, and feel free to drop me a line at: ijacques@delta-optimist.com with your feedback.

Good riddance to 2020

G

iven what we’ve been through for the last 10 months, the term ‘2020 hindsight’ takes on a whole new meaning. We will look back on this year and remember a grave time for humanity. Not only has the virus sickened and killed many people, it has polarized us, at a time when we really needed to come together. I blame it all on social media, the purveyor of information, dis-information and cat videos. I can’t read a lot of that stuff anymore, there’s no truth in a lot of it and it just drives me nuts. And I’m not a big cat video guy either. I recently had the opportunity to hear from a very interesting fellow, Dave Sanderson. Dave would know something about getting through a troubling experience, as he was the last passenger off the Miracle on the Hudson, the plane that went into the Hudson River, piloted by Sully. His take on 2020 was different. Trying to make sense of everything that’s happened this past year is difficult. There’s every reason to be apprehensive of the future. Will we have

Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN

another pandemic? Will the next one be worse? Will the vaccine work? Will we get this one under control? Will I even be able to shake someone’s hand again and not fear for my life? What Dave said was to live a life based on gratitude. Believe that everything happens for a reason, and how you respond determines your future. If you believe that, maybe 2020 was destined to be the year we looked back at, to remember how fragile life is. But is there much to be grateful for? There sure is. I’m grateful for the scientists and researchers who found a solution and developed a vaccine. I’m grateful for the medi-

cal staff that was there to help the sick. I’m grateful we can see the light at the end of this tunnel, because we may have another tunnel to look down again, which could be worse. The lessons we learned this time will help us next time. I’m grateful for the country, the province and the community we live in, because this pandemic was much different in other parts of the world. I’m grateful that, even though we can’t be together with family over Christmas, we can still connect through Zoom. And I’m grateful for a mute button. My heart aches for anyone who lost a loved one to this virus. I lost my Dad before it started, and I’m grateful I could hold his hand before he passed. I’m grateful that 2020 is almost over, the sun will rise soon on a new year. Hindsight indeed, 2020 has been a real pain in the derriere. Beach day ruined by COVID-19 rule breakers Editor: Saturday, Dec. 5 was a beautiful sunny day for a beach walk. Unfortunately the day was ruined by a group of about 10 supposedly invincible, but selfish COVID-19 rule-breakers gathering around 2 p.m. at picnic tables - sharing snacks and beverages from cool-

ers with a barbecue in view at Boundary Bay/ Centennial Beach. Participants were laughing, talking loudly, crowding closely – all without masks and definitely not two metres apart. Last time I checked, this type of social gathering – indoors or outdoors - is banned until further notice.

Be forewarned, you know who you are and your bad behaviour has been reported to appropriate COVID-19 authorities, and is a hint for other rule-breakers who plan to use Delta parks for restricted outdoor social gatherings. The Boundary Bay eagles are also watching!! B. Yaworski

Thank-you for the wonderful care

Editor: On the morning of Nov. 13, I fainted while shopping at Save On Foods. Immediately a clerk sat beside me on the floor, holding my hand tightly, while two other staff, trained in first aid, were assessing me. They decided I needed the ambulance and stayed with me for 20 minutes until it got there. It was the right call. The ambulance attendants and the team in emergency at Delta Hospital were efficient, fast and caring, as were

the technicians who completed many tests. Treatment was started and by evening I was moved to a room. I found the doctors, nurses and staff to be kind, helpful and cheerful, despite being threatened by COVID, and very busy. Thank-you to everyone who helped me in so many ways, and also to anyone who has ever donated blood! Together you have made a huge difference in my life! Gloria Eyolfson

City praised for its accessibility efforts

Editor: Dec. 3 was the UN’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Even though it didn’t seem to have been recognized by the City of Delta, on this day, I want to say thank you to Mayor Harvie and council for taking on full serve gas, starting a Disability Advisory Committee, making the South

Delta recreation centre and Tunnel Town Curling Club more accessible and inclusive, and soon amending the municipal parking bylaw to provide more and better accessible parking for people with disabilities. Good things to reflect today. Keep it up Delta. Vince Miele

How to give back to Delta Hospital and save on your 2020 taxes

There are just a few weeks left to make your charitable gifts count for your 2020 tax return. We have an option that will help you save on your taxes while supporting Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation.

DONATE SECURITIES

Making a gift of publicly traded securities (stocks/bonds/mutual funds) is an easy and tax-smart way to support Delta Hospital. You will receive a tax receipt for the full market value and do not have to pay capital gains tax.

STEPS

1. Complete the transfer form 2. Send the form to your broker 3. Let the DHCHF know the transfer is in progress – please contact Jodi Stokes at: jodi.stokes@dhchfoundation.ca or call (604) 940-9695. 4. Receive a tax receipt for the full market value + eliminate your capital gains tax • Greater charitable tax credit for you • Greater donation to the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation

TIMING

Some transfers can take a few weeks to complete and if you would like a tax receipt for this calendar year the Foundation needs to receive the transferred shares by December 31st.

YOUR IMPACT

When you consider making a gift of securities instead of cash, you may be able to make a larger gift than you thought possible. Your support through a gift of shares would have a meaningful impact to the many services we provide at Delta Hospital and a great way to make a charitable gift before the end of the year. It is a good idea to discuss your personal circumstances with your financial advisor when considering a gift of securities.

Say no to the Christmas plastic toys

Editor: It has been lovely to see the beautiful display of Christmas lights around our Delta community this December. People are making an effort to light up the dark evenings with beautiful displays, which are sending a message of hope at this difficult time. However, I have also noticed a proliferation of

plastic blow up Christmas toys on many front lawns. These plastic Christmas toys are colorful and some of them are fun for the children who see them, however, at a time when we need to re-think our way of improving and protecting our environment, are plastic inflatable toys, that get punctured and damaged and thrown into the landfill

the way we want to go? Sometimes the “fashionable” items manufactured by companies without thought or care for the environment need to be boycotted. We need to send a message that we do not want to leave even more non-biodegradable plastics in our landfills as our legacy for future generations. Joan Lang

A bittersweet anniversary for popular Point Roberts parcel service MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A milestone anniversary last month for a popular Point Roberts parcel service was greeted with mixed emotions. Point to Point, which is a mere few hundred feet away from the Canada/U.S. border, turned 20 in the midst of what normally would be its most hectic time of the year. All that changed when the border was closed to essential travel back in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A year ago, 11,000 packages arrived at the business in December. This month they will be lucky to hit 1,000. “To see where it has built from 20 years ago and then what has happened since March is devastating,” said co-owner and general manager Beth Calder. “I feel like we are back at square one where you are getting 50 packages a day. That you might as well go back to a manual system. That’s the scary part.” Calder says it would normally take 10-to-11 employees to handle all the processing during the busy season. Instead, it’s her and one other staff member working three-

hour shifts on just a weekday schedule after seven employees were laid off in March. The business’ lease on the property, that also includes a sizable warehouse, expired in October but Calder is grateful she is dealing with a compassionate landlord. “We have been in good talks, but we are paying premium top dollar for where we are at and I’ve discovered no one pays the level we pay. It’s an eye opener. It’s like we are in Ladner paying Robson Street rent,” laughed Calder. “We have good talks and they want to see us here. We are grateful for that.” What has kept the company going is a loyal customer base and a forward mailing service that was already in place prior to COVID-19. “There are some, for the eight or nine months the border has been closed, are religiously mail forwarding if not every week then every couple weeks. They are still buying and having us re-package their shipments together and forward them on (to Canada),” said Calder. “I guess they are very specific buyers. They like who they buy from, they like the quality clothes, shoes or whatever reason.

“There are certain rates that I embedded in my head since we’ve been doing it non-stop for nine months. There is a lot of work and I think some customers don’t realize we are not making a killing here. More like pennies on the dollar. That’s why a lot of stores in the U.S. market will not offer international shipping because they know if they have to charge what it cost to the customer, they wouldn’t order.” Calder is amazed to see some customers still order large items such as sofas or weight lifting systems that requires a Canada Customs bonded trucking company based in Bellingham (Point Roberts Auto Freight) to deliver the items to a location in Tsawwassen for pick-up. She also has to always explain the unusual route for parcels to Canada.. “I could literally kick a parcel from here to a home on First Avenue in Tsawwassen, but, instead, they are driven by truck from here to San Francisco where they first clear US customs before being flown to YVR where they go through Canadian customs before going to Canada Post and being delivered,” added Calder.

One Step Forward: Private school helps students stay on track in-class and online Southpointe Academy has thrived in the challenging circumstances brought on by the global pandemic. The last several months have challenged schools to respond to unprecedented conditions in education, and Southpointe has met that challenge to the highest degree. Throughout all the changing stages of education, from online learning to a partial return to school last June, to a full return this fall amidst the pandemic, Southpointe has ensured its students have not missed valuable instruction time. Continuity of student learning has been protected without interruption. Last March, when the Ministry of Education suspended in-class instruction, Southpointe quickly mobilized resources over Spring Break and launched its online learning platform on April 2. The school designed and rolled out its own customized, purposebuilt learning platforms to provide resources and information to students and families. Two days after Spring Break, students picked up where they left off with their full schedule of classes, including all specialty subjects, like Art, French, Spanish, Music, PE and Drama. The feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive. Students enjoyed the live synchronous lessons with their teachers and reaped the benefits of a full day of learning activities reflecting their normal schedule of classes. The success of Southpointe’s online learning last spring was predicated on the strong relationships its teachers had built with their students. This sense of community and connectedness sits at the heart of a Southpointe education and is critical to the school delivering on its mission to help every student learn, lead and succeed. When students enjoy strong, connected relationships with

their teachers, they are primed to achieve their personal best. This fall, as the province transitioned back to a full return to in-class instruction, Southpointe ensured its health and safety measures were among the strongest in the province. The school installed digital facial temperature scanners, designated separate outdoor playing areas, and mandated masks in all public areas of the school since day one, with most students and teachers wearing masks inside the classrooms as well. Southpointe also purchased plexiglass barriers for each of its 560 students and installed over 70 additional hand sanitizer stations throughout its modern 80,000 square foot building. These are but a few of the extra layers of protection that Southpointe implemented over the last six months of school. The attention to student welfare has provided a safe, secure environment where students are free to focus on their learning. Recently, Southpointe has been highly ranked by the Fraser Institute. Although flattered by the rankings, the school prides itself instead on its culture of innovation, high expectations and progressive practice. Southpointe focuses on the individual experience of each student as a more valid measure of success. It also ensures that each student is supported to gain access to the universities of their choice through a robust university counselling programme starting in Grade 9. Southpointe students routinely attend some of the

most competitive universities in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. The School continues to look to the future as it navigates the current landscape of education. Moving forward, Southpointe will be developing its plans to enhance its campus and amenities for students, continue to develop its world leading IB programmes, and enhance its resources for students. More than ever, Southpointe graduates will be equipped with the skills and competencies for success in university, career and citizenship in the mid-21st century. To learn more about the benefits of a Southpointe education, please visit www.southpointe.ca or contact Tobin Hammerberg, Director of Admissions (thammerberg@southpointe.ca).

DSS annual Twenty Days of Giving smashes initial goal More than $17,000 in food, cash and gift cards collected by students MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta Secondary School’s annual Twenty Days of Giving Campaign proved to be tremendous success and will make a difference for many over the holiday season. The campaign, which wrapped up on Dec. 7, collected $17,000 worth of food items, gift cards, toiletries, cash and cheques, blowing past the initial goal of $7,500. It means more than 25 local families will benefit from the generosity, along with the South Delta Food Bank. In addition to collecting within the school, a drive-thru drop off last week resulted in more donations from the community.

For over two decades, students at DSS have collected food and gifts, and assembled hampers for families in need in the school community to help them through the festive season. This year, knowing that many more families are in need of support, students expanded the initiative and reached their goal. “This hands-on experience has brought our Pacer Community together at a time of year to help those who would benefit from this support the most,” said DSS principal John Pavao. “At Delta Secondary we strive to be good Pacers—Participate, Achieve, Care, Explore and Respect in and out of the classroom while

striving to make contributions to the greater community. I want to thank everyone for showing their #pacerpride and keeping our community #ladnerstrong through our Twenty Days of Giving Campaign.” The campaign was headed by co-organizers Colleen Blatz and Graham Harkley. Carla Day and her Interact Club led the drive-thru collection event on Dec. 1. Paige Collings and the student government too care of the organization and the promotion of the event. Shelley Greene and Maggie Callander worked with the local businesses and organizations, while Cora Deane was praised for her work behind the scenes.

Community

Community steps up big How often do you check your phone? for cancer research A pancreatic cancer research fundraiser in South Delta last month generated nearly $13,000. The campaign featured the participation of six local restaurants (Ladner and Tsawwassen McDonalds, Ladner Dairy Queen, Tsawwassen White Spot and The Chopped Leaf’s Ladner and Tsawwassen locations) who all donated 10 percent of

their proceeds from their designated day. This, along with community donations, generated $10,096.95. In addition, the Delta Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society contributed another $2,873.05 in the memory of Delta firefighter Thomas Haydon. The amount brought the final total to $12,970, which reflected Haydon’s regimental number of

297. He lost his battle to pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer in 2018 and his wife Roberta organized the campaign. “Thank you, Delta Fire, for your generous donation, for your support and for your help bringing awareness to this event,” said Roberta in a social media post. “And thanks to our friends, family and people of South Delta for your continued support.”

Swap food for fines at your library Fraser Valley Regional Library’s annual Food for Fines campaign is back. From now until Jan. 13, 2021, you can “pay” your fines with food. It’s simple – bring in commercially packaged, unexpired, non-perishable food items to any FVRL location and have your fines reduced. One food item equals $2 in fines/fees, and up to $30 of fines/ fees owed per library account can be

cleared during the campaign. All items collected will be donated to the local area food bank. “Food for Fines comes at a time when the financial impacts of COVID-19 are being realized throughout our communities. More people than ever turning to their local food banks. This campaign will no doubt be our most impactful one to date,” says Heather Scoular, Director of Customer Experience.

You will be able to see some top local music and dance talent in your home next week. The City of Delta will present its first-ever Virtual Christmas Concert Dec. 21 and 22 on its facebook.com/cityofdeltabc and youtube.com/ cityofdeltabc platforms. Both shows start at 7 p.m. With the COVID-19 pandemic eliminating the possibility of traditional holiday gatherings and celebrations, the City of Delta has created new ways to spread seasonal cheer and come together as a community. Over the two nights, the City of Delta will release two videos showcasing musicians and dancers as they perform special renditions of beloved holiday classics. “The pandemic means we have to keep our Christmas and holiday celebrations small this year – only with our own household, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get together virtually with our families, friends, and neighbours across Delta to have fun and enjoy the talents of some outstanding performers,” said Mayor George Harvie. “I am very excited for our special holiday program-

The Christmas spirit is shining bright in South Delta. An amazing display of creativity has been shown this year with wonderful imagination and creativity by residents in Ladner and Tsawwassen as well as community groups as a way to bring the community together. Below are a number of submissions from the public as well as a detailed list of the displays that you can visit. Santa and all his elves are busy at the North Pole loading gifts into the sleigh in Brad Keen’s display at 5445 4A Ave. There are more than 3,300 lights on display. The display will run until Jan. 4 from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. nightly. John Kroeker’s light display is 500 lights outlining the house, plus a few stars and a mini-tree at his house at 6219 Dawn Drive in Ladner. The lights are synchronized to music which is broadcast on a low-power FM transmitter on 91.1FM. He currently has about 30 minutes of music which plays from sunset to 11 p.m. daily. Meiric and Kathy Preece have once again gone all out with their display at 5374-46th Ave. in Ladner. “My husband Meiric normally does our light display all by himself which takes him three days, but this Christmas is different,” said Kathy. “Meiric broke his heel last July and had to have surgery, so is not allowed to climb a ladder, so this year it’s been a family affair. “Our son David put Santa and the reindeer on the roof and put all the upper roof lights up. I did some lower roof lights and Meiric put all the ground level lights up. I never dreamed our display would still happen this year, but with Meiric’s determination, our son’s help and our neighbors beautiful displays, it is as beautiful as ever.” John and Gail Belonio have quite the unique display at their 5350 50th Ave. home in Ladner. “I’m a professional Topiarist (the art of shaping trees and shrubs in geometrical and various shapes),” said John. “If you love castellated hedges, spiral trees, multi-tiered shrubs and cloud pruning then drive by and enjoy the show.” Each year, siblings Dylan and Asia Mattu add a new element to their cartoon inspired Christmas light display at 4686 62nd St. in East Ladner. “Growing up, we never put up out-

From your favourite Disney characters to the Peanuts, there is plenty to see at 4686 62nd Street in East Ladner. door lights, but I am proud to say that we continue to have one of the brightest houses in East Ladner for nearly a

decade,” said Dylan. “It is so fulfilling to see the joy on peoples’ faces as the walk/drive past our home. This year,

This display at 5863 Varden Place in the heart of Beach Grove includes a miniature working train and gondola.

we made alterations to our It’s a Small World feature to reflect the current state of the world and reinforce a sense of unity during these trying times.” Another must-see in Ladner is Candy Cane Lane (55A Ave.) where the whole street is decked out in the Christmas spirit. This is a great spot for a nice stroll down the street to take in the spectacle. James Zaitsoff has something a little different at their home at 856 51A St. in Tsawwassen. “My wife insists that I not break my neck by attempting to hang lights along our gutters (reasonable), and so this year I went a different route,” he said. “My sons (age 3 and 5) helped me forage for logs and sticks to make a herd of ten reindeer, including a baby and Rudolph. You can see my display usually every day/night from dusk to 2 a.m. Feel free to wander into the driveway to have a different view and lookup at the tree canopy from underneath to see the laser lights shimmering like stars.” Scott Mitchell’s house at 4859 13th Ave., which he decorates every year, is dedicated this year to all the front line workers as a way of thanking them for their service to the community. Camaro Drive in Tsawwassen has almost 100 per cent house light participation. “There are at least two houses that are very decorated and more additions were made to the displays this year,” said resident Kathleen Carswell. “We have a little library on our front lawn with lights and my old bicycle has lights as well. Our street also has some Christmas light balls that we all made together a few years ago and we hang them on the trees out front.” Century Group’s Southlands project

Where’s the ‘Merry’ gone? Are you feeling low? Is there a discouragement that lingers below the surface and is gasping to come up and be known? My heart is heavy for many of my friends who are trying to hang on to happiness despite the cloud that envelopes them. For some it is a loss that they have endured this year and as Christmas approaches such loss is magnified. For others it is a battle against cancer. There are a myriad of other reasons weigh upon still others. Take all these and then add the discouragement of our current pandemic lockdown. Makes the wishing of “Merry Christmas” ring hollow. My personal devotional reading today came glaring off the pages at me and steered me back

Minister’s Minute DANNY STEBECK

LIGHTHOUSE CHURCH

onto a good path. It was the greeting of the angel to the Shepherds: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you!” (Luke 2:10-11). This is the time of year when we need to dig

deep into the Christmas story and unpack its greatness. Traditions bring a warmth to our lives, a measure of predictability that comforts us, but they carry no power beyond pointing us to something deeper. We are like Shepherds living socially distant and enveloped in darkness. We need the terrifying power of God to jolt us out of slumber and awaken us to the reality that Christ has come! If discouragement simmers away in your life I encourage you to be bold in your prayers to God. Ask him to make you fully alive to Him by the power of his Spirit and to drive away the doubts and fears. This is my grown up pastoral Christmas wish for you.

ADVICE FROM THE PROS Q: Is it safe to be going to the dentist during this time of COVID-19?

Q: Do you have any tips for me over the busy & stressful holiday season? Ans. What a great question – I have often found that, in order to care well for others, you must care for yourself first. Ask yourself “in what ways do I care for myself”? The answer is not as easy as it first appears. Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional and physical health. Self-care is not something that needs to be forced or something that we don’t enjoy. Neither is it a selfish act, in short, self-care should be something that refuels us – rather than takes from us. Sticking to the basics and being aware of what you do, why you do it, how it feels, and the outcomes are great first steps.

A: Maintaining a health mouth requires a person to have

Dr. Raj Dhiman 604-946-9588

regular access to dental care. This is made particularly difficult with the concerns of COVID-19. We have to weigh the risks vs the benefits of each decision we make when travelling out of the house, and going to the dentist is no different. If proper precautions are taken by the dental office it poses no more risk than going elsewhere. Precautions should include a health and travel history, maintaining adequate social distancing, measuring temperature of all patients, proper PPE, and readily available disinfectant and gloves and masks for all employees and patients. Riverside Dental is open to serve your dental needs and all safety precautions are in place. Call us at 604-946-9588.

As 2020 draws to a close and this year’s holiday season will be very different; keeping yourself in good health and spirits is more important than ever. From all of us; wishing health, happiness, peace and joy for you and your family and loved ones this Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year. “Your personal pharmacist is with you every step of the way” is not just a slogan – it is THE reason Paul Gibbons, Pharmacist/Owner at the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Tsawwassen, looks forward to helping you every day.

Windsor Woods, Tsawwassen #4 - 1363 56th Street Tel: (778) 434-3300 email: ms0367@store.medicineshoppe.ca www.medicineshoppe.ca QUESTION: How is Expedia Cruises navigating through Covid-19?

QUESTION I’ve had my new hearing aids for a few days, but they’re not performing exactly as I would like. Why? ANSWER

ANSWER:

This is common and nothing to be concerned about! It’s important to remember that adjusting to your new hearing aids will be a gradual process. We advise our clients that it often takes 4-6 visits to our clinic until we have the hearing aids perfectly fit and calibrated for each person and his or her lifestyle.

Mark Nickel

BC-HIP, BBA

Hearing Instrument Practitioner Phone: 604-943-0033 5682 12 Avenue, Tsawwassen www.TsawwassenHearing.com

In addition to getting comfortable with how the hearing aids physically feel, you’ll notice that sounds and noises you may not have heard for quite some time are back. Your ears are now being supported by your new hearing aids; this means that in the first few days, many sounds will appear louder than before. Rest assured this will cease to be an issue once your brain gets used to these sounds again.

Sandy Drover

We would like to thank you all for your continued support, wishing you and your families a very safe and healthy holiday season and we look forward to a brighter 2021.

During follow-up visits, we ask our clients to be very honest about what is working well and what could use improvement. Hearing aids are powerful pieces of technology; getting the most out of them requires expertise and commitment from us, and trust and patience from you. Though it can be a process, we’re in it with you all the way to help you hear more out of life.

Being a local small business, our focus has been to keep travel in the mind set of our community. Because travel is our passion, we need to be a positive advocate and feel that while we cannot travel right now, we are confident we will travel again in the near future. Knowing there is a vaccine in sight and with all of the new protocols that have been implemented by all modes of travel we know we will be back doing what we love, safely and confidently. People need something to look forward to, so many of our clients are booking their vacations for 2021 and 2022.

Making a gift of publicly traded securities (stocks/bonds/ mutual funds) is an easy and tax-smart way to support Delta Hospital. You will receive a tax receipt for the full market value and do not have to pay capital gains tax. When you consider making a gift of securities instead of cash, you may be able to make a larger gift than you thought possible. Your support through a gift of shares would have a meaningful impact to the many services we provide at Delta Hospital and a great way to make a charitable gift before the end of the year. Before you decide to donate securities directly, we advise you discuss your personal circumstances with your financial advisor to make sure it is the right way to go for you. If you are interested making a gift of securities to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation, you can find a transfer form and more information on our website: www.dhchfoundation.ca or please contact the Foundation and we will be happy to assist. If you have questions about gifting securities, please contact Jodi Stokes at: jodi.stokes@dhchfoundation.ca or call (604) 940-9695.

DSS students embrace drop-in sports

Focus turns to post-pandemic with after school boys volleyball skills development MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Providing students at least some level of normalcy during the COVID19 pandemic is a big win for the Delta Secondary School’s athletic department. It was about four weeks ago that senior boys volleyball coach Andrew Robson launched a drop-in program for grade 8-to-10 students at the Ladner high school. His own team’s season never got started with all B.C. School Sports sanctioned activities locked into cohort training only for the fall season which will conclude on Friday. At some point Robson had to look at the boys program’s future and establishing the groundwork that is developed in the younger grades. “As much as they didn’t want to hear it, I had to tell (my Grade 12s) their high school careers were finished unfortunately,” said Robson. “It just made more sense putting more of an effort into the Grade 8s, 9s and 10s.” The response was better than Robson anticipated. As many as 25 Grade 8s are coming to the sessions and the junior workouts are attracting between 16 and 20 students each week. They remain in their cohort groups the entire time which Robson has used as teams for scrimmaging. The program has been such a hit that many students are asking him for additional gym times. “(With the Grade 8s) they are 13-years-old so it’s a fairly extensive reveal of the COVID protocol before every session,” continued Robson. “They are making the most of it and have been dying to be involved in something. Now they have something to look for to.” Robson is also involved at the club level with regionally-based Element Volleyball Club that typically would be

Since there was no season for his senior boys volleyball team, DSS teacher/coach Andrew Robson has turned his attention to after school skill development programs for students in grades 8-to-10. starting its season soon. However, like most clubs, Element relies on renting gyms and many school districts have cancelled agreements until at least the end of March, including Delta. It means a drop-in school program might be the only option to get players on the court. “I told the juniors everyone has rode the COVID roller coaster for a while with mixed emotions that go up and own,” added Robson. “Selfishly, it’s at the point now, after three weeks, that it’s not the worst thing for the program as I think I can still give the kids a pretty

good experience. “Even training once a week for the rest of the year. Lot of schools and clubs are not able to go right now. We’re lucky we have a strong group of people here. There’s an opportunity for a full year training a lot of other schools are not going to get. So it’s how can we can come out better on the other side of this?” Longtime DSS teacher Kerrie Trotman is facing a similar scenario when the winter sports season gets underway in January including basketball.

Her senior girls team is coming off a historical campaign that concluded with a trip to the provincials for the first time in decades. A number of players are slated to return but a lot will have to happen for even exhibition games to be played among Delta schools only. “It will be skills for sure and we will see what happens from there,” said Trotman. “It’s really tough because I love those kids but if there is not going be a season I would be better off building the younger grades and (2019-20 junior girls coach) Chris Ainge can do the older kids.”

A Very Special Thanks to all our Clients for a busy and prosperous 2020! “And the Grinch with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons, it came without tags, it came without packages, boxes or bags and he puzzled and puzzled ‘til his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”

It was seven years ago on a snowy December 20 that you had to leave us after fighting cancer for years, first breast cancer, and then brain cancer. You fought hard against both and suffered greatly to stay with your family, but in the end the cancer stole you from us.

Myler Wilkinson passed away peacefully at age 67, on December 4, 2020. He was born on April 5, 1953, in Vancouver, the first child of Dorothy and Rundle Wilkinson of Ladner. From the farm they shared with his grandparents, Lydia and Fred, his life took him throughout the world as an accomplished scholar, an award−winning author and a visionary educator. Myler excelled from his first days at Ladner Elementary, and he went on to study literature in university, earning his BA and MA from Simon Fraser and Ph.D. from McGill. His passionate mind and infectious love of global culture and history inspired a generation of students from Canada to Russia, Japan, China and Costa Rica. As an author and editor, his accolades included the 2014 Fiddlehead Literary Journal award for Best Short Fiction. In the 2010s he came full circle, returning to lecture at SFU. Myler and his wife, Linda, taught at Selkirk College, where they spearheaded the creation of the Mir Centre for Peace in 1999. This legacy is an institution of learning unique in B.C., which they developed alongside the area’s Indigenous and Doukhobor communities, among countless others, where diverse peoples can gather to embrace their differences and together build cultures of peace. Myler was a star athlete in school, an avid hiker in his later years, and a lifelong friend with an infectious smile, ready jokes and glowing interest in every person he met. His boundless movement was finally curbed by Multiple System Atrophy, which he lived with for five years until his passing in Grand Forks, B.C. One of the last words he spelled out was "lucid," which described him in every sense.

WILKINSON, Myler April 5, 1953 − December 4, 2020

BRUCE, Maureen Elizabeth (Paddy) June 25, 1928 to November 4, 2020 We say goodbye to Paddy, long time resident of Ladner. Paddy passed peacefully at Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, she is now with her beloved John. Paddy leaves behind her three children; Robert, Rachael, James, and grandchildren. Paddy was a long time volunteer for Meals on Wheels, The Delta Hospital and long time member of the Legion. She will be missed by family and friends in British Columbia, England and her Navy friends in Halifax. The family would like to thank the staff at Irene Thomas Hospice, for their kindness. No service will be held.

Myler is survived by his parents, Dorothy and Rundle; siblings Melinda (George), Garret (Bronwen), Travis (Chris), and Randi (Terry); wife, Linda; and children, Nathan and Anna. He is at rest at USCC Sion Cemetery in Grand Forks. Good night, sweet prince.

Following a brief, but brave battle with lung cancer, our beloved Valerie’s ashes were buried at Boundary Bay Cemetery on what would have been her 69th birthday. Val was a beautiful, caring and kind person who focused all her attention and energy on family, particularly her two sons Ryan and Gregory. She loved to play Mahjong, and enjoyed a glass of red wine in the evening. She will be missed by her friends and family.

GOUGH, Hedy 1931 - 2020 Our Mom, Hedy Gough, has recently reunited with her loved ones that have gone before her. A true lover of nature, Mom always grew lovely gardens full of vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed sitting outside and observing the weather and nature. Mom was a creative person who enjoyed sewing, fashion design, painting and the fine arts throughout her life. Her artistic ability was an inspiration to all of us, as were the many paintings we received from her. Mom loved travelling throughout her life, and still travelled at age 87.

Mom was born in Montreal and lived there until 1967. At age 17 she completed her diploma in Fashion Design and Pattern making. She worked in several Haute Couture Shops in Montreal. In 1954 she joined Air Canada and while there, met her husband, Gerald, whom she was married to for 59 years. Mom moved to Vancouver with her family in 1967 and spent 54 years at her family home in Tsawwassen. While a homemaker raising five children, she managed to continue sewing and designing fashions for clients out of her home for many years. Mom is dearly missed by her five children: Gordon, Adam, Colleen, Terry and Phil (Dee), and grandchildren Grant (Erica), Shaunna, Hunter, Sarah, and Parker. It is with our deepest gratitude that we honour our Mom’s selfless dedication to care for all of us first, above herself. Mom, the daises and black-eyed susans have called your name. May you make them ever more beautiful as your spirit now dances amongst them. Go in Grace and Peace. Online condolences may be made at www.deltafuneral.ca whom have been entrusted with the arrangements. Delta Funeral Home 604-946-6040

This Holiday Season

Give the Gift of Local News

T

oday – and every Thursday – we do something very special: our carriers deliver a copy of the Optimist to nearly every home in South Delta. We wouldn’t be able to do this without the ongoing support of the community.

We know every South Delta resident is familiar with the Optimist and considers it their hometown news source. You trust us for our honest, reliable and timely reporting and because you recognize we care about our community and the impact events have on it. We tell the stories of South Delta, both in print and online, every day of the week, whether that’s a controversial decision at city hall or a community-wide effort to help the less fortunate. Readers turn to the Optimist for information on everything from community festivals to theatre productions to what’s happening in area schools or with local sports teams. We keep you in touch with your surroundings which in turn allows you to stay engaged with your community. We do this by employing trained and reputable journalists to do the work. They attend council meetings, public hearings, school board meetings and countless events. We hold public officials and institutions to account. We have professional photographers on hand to capture important moments for individual families and greater milestones in our city’s history. Many local communities across Canada no longer have a local newspaper or journalists to take on these tasks, and public discourse has eroded. We are fortunate to have an award-winning team of journalists at the Optimist, which was named top newspaper in its class in all of Canada last year. To do this we count on our local businesses to support us with their advertising dollars, but we also rely on our readers to do their part by buying a voluntary subscription to the newspaper so it will continue to be delivered to your doorstep every Thursday by a local carrier.

So today we have a simple ask: please take the time to read this week’s issue of the Optimist, and consider the value of what’s in it. If you like what you read and see, then buy a subscription, which costs $5 per month or $50 for the year plus GST. It’s as simple as signing up at Subscription.Delta-Optimist.com, calling 604-946-4451 or mailing a cheque to our office at 5008 47A Avenue, Delta. To be clear, subscriptions are voluntary and the Optimist will continue to be delivered to your door even if you don’t subscribe. We are also encouraging local businesses to take advantage of the voluntary subscription program as their ongoing support will ensure the viability of the Optimist for years to come. We trust you see the value of a community newspaper and we hope you will see fit to support the Optimist through our voluntary subscription program. With thanks,

Matt Blair Publisher, Delta Optimist
