LBA planting honours Dr. Bonnie Henry, pollinators, and local business DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i ng Wr i t e r
As part of an initiative by the Ladner Business Association (LBA), a blend of cosmos seedlings from the Dr. Bonnie Henry Pollinator Blend were planted under glorious sunny skies in Ladner Village Tuesday morning. On hand for the June 22 planting were Mayor George Harvie, LBA president Jill McKnight, West Coast Seeds president Aaron Saks, and City of Delta gardening team member Shelby Brubacher. The “pollinator patch,” which is just across the street from South Coast Casuals, will hopefully bring more awareness to the importance of supporting the different pollinators in Delta’s declared Bee City, said McKnight. McKnight added that she also wants the patch to highlight the work of
West Coast Seeds and their special collaborative project with Henry, B.C.’s Medical Health Officer. “It’s a way of us all coming together in our community,” says McKnight. “We see the efforts that one of our [LBA] members has taken, and we want to help tell our whole greater community about that.” The pollinator patch now holds the growing, green cosmos seedlings, among other eye-catching greenery and flowers. They will grow to be a colourful mix of pink, yellow, orange, and white cosmos to represent Henry’s cheerful, eyecatching style. A little sign indicating that the patch is pollinator-friendly sits among the soon-to-be flowers. The LBA gave the special seed blend to the City of Delta’s gardening team (Gordon Klammer and Brubacher) ahead of time so that they could be germinated to seedlings before the planting.
“As mayor, these are the things that I really like to do – be out in the community and show that Delta is interested in doing everything possible in [addressing] climate change and bee pollination. They’re very important subjects that local government has a role in,” said Harvie. With the Dr. Bonnie Henry Pollinator Blend, 100 per cent of the proceeds are being donated to Food Banks Canada, which was her charity of choice, and specifically within the region that the packet was purchased in. So far, West Coast Seeds has raised around $225,000 for Food Banks Canada, says Saks. “Being able to do something at such an important time, given COVID-19 and some of the challenges around money and food security, it’s amazing,” he said. “And being able to support pollinators at the same time, it was just a

SDSS students carve out safe and welcoming spaces

Sharing culture in a welcoming space through carving and artwork was the result of an incredible year-long journey for a group of teachers and students at South Delta Secondary. Since January 2020, 23 students have been working under the teaching and guidance of Master Carver and local Indigenous artist Jody Wilson with support from teachers Jennifer Thoss, Kimberley Hlina, and Katrina Branden. “I’ve worked with Jody before at a different school with a very successful outcome,” said Thoss. “In my classroom I have several Indigenous students who are quite connected to their home cultures. They are artsy kind of kids and were having trouble getting engaged, so I thought I would try and fire up the project here.” Thoss said there was great support from the school, the school PAC and other funding, which enabled to project to get off the ground. The project was in two parts, with Wilson first introduced to the students in February 2020.

Beginning pre-COVID, students learned design elements and began individual pieces. This was interrupted, however, by the pandemic and resumed in November 2020 so that students could finish their first carvings - traditionally given as gifts - before winter break. Sensing the on-going interest of students, Wilson proposed a collaborative carving, which would then
be a legacy piece displayed at the school. Beginning in April, students reconnected and began working with Wilson on the collaborative piece. During the next three months, students met twice a week in the woodshop or outside, planning, carving, and painting the threefoot round yellow cedar. “The best things about it has been student engagement,” said Thoss.
“At the centre of this project are the students, who stayed hours after scheduled classes to work on the carving. This time allowed Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to share their backgrounds and varied life experiences, bringing people together, sharing stories in a very safe environment and of course, the actual skill of carving has been amazing to see these students
and their work.” Last Thursday, June 17 was a day of celebration and acknowledgement at SDSS as the students unveiled their final carving called, “Our Visionary (the Eagle) Our Home (the Sun).” The ceremony, held under COVID-19 restrictions at the school library, began with a blessing and acknowledgment of place from Musqueam Elder Rose Guerin of the Delta School District, who also spoke about the 215 children whose remains were found at the site of the former Kamloops Residential School. As Wilson explained to the group, while the carving is open to interpretation, the Sun represents our home, and the Eagle, catching a salmon from Salish Sea, is our visionary guide; the Gulf Islands are also depicted, giving a sense of place. “This has been a very difficult and challenging year, and with so much dividing us, this project brought us together, which is what we need and what matters most: a sense of place, connection, and community,” noted SDSS principal Terry Ainge.

Injured eaglet found by cyclists now in OWLs care DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
A baby eaglet is now in the care of Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) following the swift actions of OWL volunteers and a pair of cyclists. While biking through the Millennium Trail in Ladner this past weekend, cyclists Elizabeth Smith and Ron McKenzie happened upon a seven-
week eaglet sitting suspiciously still on the edge of the path. “We went slowly up towards it, and we stayed about five feet away from it, and it just sat there. And so, Ron and I said to each other, ‘this doesn’t look right,’” said Smith. After Smith called the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society 24-hour phone line for raptor rescuing emergencies, volunteers Matt
Hlus and Joanne Barbeau were on the trail with their net and gloves within 20 minutes. By then, the eaglet had limped over to a tree, but McKenzie was keeping an eye on it while warning cyclists to pass slowly. “They were amazing. They saw it at the base of the tree, they had the net on it, and then Matt had it in his hands,” said Smith. Barbeau described

the rescue as quick and smooth, and credited Smith and McKenzie for keeping the eaglet in sight, as finding the raptor can sometimes be the hardest part. “It looks like he was just young and on the ground, which sometimes happens – they fall from the nest,” added Martina Versteeg, a raptor care supervisor at OWL.
#2
Versteeg said the male eaglet did not break anything from his fall and OWL expects him to make a full recovery once he is old and strong enough to be released. The eaglet is being raised by a bald eagle foster parent, alongside some other orphaned or injured eaglets, to be taught how to communicate and behave, said
Barbeau. “He’s a very lucky eaglet to have been found,” she added. Barbeau advises that if you happen upon eagles, falcons, hawks, osprey, owls, or vultures who look like they could use some help, to call OWL’s phone line at 604-9463171 immediately and to try to keep them in sight until the rescuers arrive.

Think twice before illegal crabbing in Boundary Bay SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s illegal and dangerous. That’s what the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is reiterating when it comes to illegal recreational shellfish harvesting in the Boundary Bay area. DFO Detachment Commander Art Demsky told the Optimist that despite repeatedly trying to get the message out,
conservation officers are still busy catching illegal crabbers. “We’ve been seeing a lot more people out there because of COVID and the restrictions and regulations don’t seem to be having much of an impact. We’re trying to let everyone know there’s been no shellfish harvesting allowed for almost 50 years in the Lower Mainland. There are health hazards asso-
ciated to that,” he said. “With crab harvesting, there are rules and regulations and you need a licence. There’s daily limits, there’s size limits but people, for whatever reason, seem to ignore a lot of that and we are seeing an increase in violations.” Demsky added it can also be dangerous walking alone far out on the muddy surface during low tide in places like Centennial Beach as the
tide can start moving in quickly. The DFO notes fisheries officers regularly patrol the area and adjacent beaches for enforcement and public education outreach. However, due to the pandemic’s health and travel restrictions and economic pressures, many new harvesters who may not be familiar with the rules and regulations, as well as the

The non-traditional harvesters may not be aware that the entire Lower Mainland, including Boundary Bay, is closed to the harvest of bivalves because of sanitary reasons and the risk of toxic shellfish poisoning. However, a significant number of recreational harvesters who are aware of the rules choose to ignore them and the numerous posted signs in the area that warn of the closures and health risks, the DFO states. harvesters can fish in the area include fish such as flounder and sole, but they are also covered by rules and regulations. The DFO also notes the current low tides are also enabling recreational harvesters to access areas that are beyond the U.S./Canada markers that denote the border line. Some Canadians are crossing, sometimes unknowingly, and illegally entering the U.S. to access flounder and crab. Any incursions across the border are viewed by U.S. authorities as illegal and could pose serious consequences for harvesters, the DFO warns.

Catalytic converter thefts on the rise IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Delta Police are reporting another rise in the number of catalytic converter thefts occurring across Delta, with seven incidents reported to police last Thursday alone. DPD say the thefts are taking place around Delta, though businesses are targeted more than residential areas. On Thursday (June 17) police were called about: * Reports of two catalytic converter thefts in Ladner on Progress Way * Two separate businesses reported thefts on Derwent Way in North Delta. One vehicle was a Ford van * Report of a catalytic converter stolen from an RV on Clivedon Place * Two catalytic converters stolen from a Toyota Truck parked in
front of a residence on 74A Avenue * A catalytic converter stolen from a vehicle on a driveway on 117 Street. On Friday, June 11, one brazen mid-day theft occurred at the mall in Tsawwassen. In that instance, which was reported to police and shared to social media, a vehicle owner observed a man holding a battery operated “sawzall,” standing next to his truck. “Not surprisingly, the vehicle owner thought the man with the saw looked suspicious,” says Cris Leykauf, spokesperson for Delta Police. “The man realized he was being watched, and went under the truck, apparently then slicing the bottom corner of the fuel tank, causing a fuel leak.” Police officers, firefighters and the vehicle owner used large evi-
dence bags and captured approximately half of the fuel, as it was leaking from the truck. The other amounts of fuel were stopped before they reached storm drains. Leykauf said the suspect was able to flee the scene via another vehicle. DPD say theft of catalytic converters is an ongoing issue across the region, as the salvage price of metal contained in the exhaust emission control device is currently considered high, and can be turned around for a quick profit. In some cases, police are aware that individuals are also purchasing these sliced off catalytic converters, potentially for resale. Although there are no scrap metal yards in Delta, police are interested in pursuing a regional approach to address this issue.

he sounds of laughter and gentle play filled Memorial Park as I headed out to my car after leaving our office here in Ladner Tuesday
night. As I looked closer I could see others enjoying a picnic, a father and a son throwing around a football – life is returning to Delta, and boy, is it a happy sight to see. As COVID-19 cases continue to drop and vaccine rates inch higher and higher every day, health restrictions are loosening, which means we are slowly returning to ‘normal.’ I have used this space many times in the past few months to criticize health officials, government leaders – even members of the general public – for not following the rules or not being tough enough on health restrictions during the pandemic. Now it’s time for some good news and some praise. According to the City of Delta, in a post on their Facebook page late last week, Delta leads the way in Fraser Health’s Mayor’s Immunization Challenge. Delta is one of the first to achieve an 80 per cent vaccination rate. According to the BC Centre for Disease Control’s latest community map of confirmed COVID-19 cases, covering the period June 6 to 12, Delta had just 24 cases. Data covering the period June 8 to 14 indicates North Delta had a total of 14 cases, Tsawwassen had nine while Ladner had none. Tsawwassen saw a slight increase from the previous week, while Ladner and North Delta saw small decreases. Delta’s total vaccination rate was at 81 per cent for residents 12 and older as of June 14, which is the fifth highest rate for B.C. communities. Breaking the Delta numbers further, the first dose vaccination rate for those 12 and older in North Delta was 79 per cent, while it was 83 per cent for both Ladner and Tsawwassen. The vaccination rate for those 18 and older in North Delta was 81 per cent, while it was 85 per cent for Ladner and Tsawwassen was 84 per cent. These numbers are fantastic and show that Delta is doing its part. So Delta, great job. Keep it up and let’s continue to get back to ‘normal.’
Water balloons and watermelon as school farm season wraps up
I
t’s a wrap! I have spent my last days with the classes and young farmers in the Delta School District for the year. We have been busy as usual, enjoying eating the crops right from the school farms and planting new veggies for the fall. But at this time of year I attempt to put the fun meter on high and we have been fortunate to have a fantastic stretch of weather, which means water balloons and watermelon. The kids have a blast and it is something they look forward to every year. I must admit that I get a tremendous amount of satisfaction from seeing the pure joy on their faces as I spray them with the water hose. Shower mode is okay for a while, but inevitably they will begin to chant “jet! jet! jet!” which means they want to really feel the water. Not a problem. Several hundred cucumber seedlings have made it home and I look forward to seeing their homework assignments, which include chronicling the growth of their plants. I always receive a card of thanks from many of the classes, which I
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
enjoy immensely, particularly when art is involved. An educators’ preface to a fantastic compilation of art from primary students noted that “the children often remark on how excited they are to be taking part in planting and caring for the garden. It has truly been an impactful experience on their growth, development, and understanding of where food comes from.” The older kids have been interested in learning about the food system, jobs in agri-food and agri-tech and several have expressed interest in participating in farming related activities in high school and beyond. This is very promising indeed. Although it has been an odd year, the Delta School
District, teachers and students have adapted nicely and some changes, particularly learning outside, will likely be a part of a normal learning experience moving forward. That can only be a good thing. It was great to hear that health protocols for the fall will change so that the cohort system will no longer be necessary, which means it will be far easier for logistics in and around the schools than they were this year. June is always a busy month and anticipation of the summer is clearly on the minds of the students. In just this past week the excitement has been even more evident. It is clear that families have been talking about the easing of travel restrictions and the good news has given the young farmers an opportunity to tell me about their plans to go to the cabin, go camping, or to visit friends and relatives around the province. I would be remiss if I didn’t say that I also share this excitement. Have a fantastic summer! Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food.

Letters
Editor: The recent discovery of unmarked graves of Indigenous children at the former Kamloops Residential School has profoundly disturbed people of all walks of life. The loss of life, particularly of innocent children at a tender age is heartrending. As a practicing Catholic, my conscience compels me to share my sentiments on the incidents that occurred at the residential schools across Canada, notwithstanding the elapse of time. First and foremost, I must categorically state that I do not condone the actions of the Religious Orders (Catholic and others) in running the residential schools. Nonetheless, we must view these events in the
right perspective, going back to the dark history of the residential schools, and the root cause. In this context, we cannot ignore the role of the Canadian Parliament of that time in establishing the Residential School System by enacting The Indian Act in 1876. Shedding our religious biases and affiliations, we cannot pass the buck entirely on the religious orders. In hindsight, such incidents, probably would not have occurred if the government had not mandated and established these schools in the first place. These schools were in operation from the 1880s until the last school was closed down in 1996. Although the government had sanctioned and funded the residential
schools, apparently, they failed to either maintain an active supervisory role or bring accountability for the transgressions that occurred in these schools. They were left to fester, leaving behind a trail of misery and loss of innocent lives. In order to bring reconciliation with our Indigenous brothers and sisters, it would be prudent to apologize on behalf of the churches involved, as humility and forgiveness are the cherished teachings of Christ. I hope the next GG of Canada will be one from the First Nations community, in order to bring some restitution and make amends for the past transgressions. Truly, they are the first people of Canada! True extent of damage lies beyond the unmarked graves
Editor: The tragedy of bodies in unmarked graves found at the former Kamloops Residential School is only the tip of the iceberg in this ongoing saga of cultural genocide. Soon more will be discovered at other residential schools across Canada. As a therapist with 45 years’ experience, I have worked with numerous residential school survivors. I am now working with the grandchildren of those survivors and the intergenerational trauma will continue to affect their children and grandchildren if healing and true reconciliation do not take place. Intergenerational trauma began with colonization when Indigenous people were
forced off their land and onto reservations. Indian agents policed these reservations mercilessly. Cultural ceremonies such as the potlatch were outlawed. And then the residential school system was devised. This program of cultural genocide flourished for more than a century; children were punished for their language, their culture and for being Indigenous. The children who survived lived with such unimaginable trauma that they self-medicated with alcohol and drugs to ease the psychological pain. A loving and supportive family was never modeled for them and many of their children ended up in foster care. For the children who remained within their families, they were raised by parents devastated by
their own pain who then acted out their trauma on their children So, let us look further than the 215 children’s graves in Kamloops, and further than the thousands who lie in unmarked graves at other residential schools, to the true count. Let us consider those who lost their lives to alcoholism and drug addiction, those killed by family violence, predators and the police, those who died because of prejudiced medical and prison systems, and those lost to suicide. Factor in diseases spread through colonization and the numbers are most likely in the millions. True reconciliation starts with acknowledging this truth. Tom Littlewood Program Director/ Dan’s Legacy

A moment to reflect
Editor: The past few weeks have been traumatizing for many Canadians. The discovery of more than 200 graves of Indigenous children lost at residential schools and the recent attack on a Muslim family that left four members dead and a child severely orphaned have hit us at our core. For some, have shattered our image of a welcoming, uber-polite multicultural society that has long been a beacon of hope for the rest of the world in showing that yes, indeed people from all different backgrounds can co-exist in harmony. As a practicing hijabwearing Muslim woman, the tragic events in London, Ont. have been a
source of shock and grief, but not any more so than the shock and grief that I feel for the loss of any innocent life. All life is sacred — whether it is a Muslim life, or the life of a Christian, Jew, Hindu, Sikh, agnostic or atheist. In his farewell sermon, the Prophet Muhammad addressed the issue of racism and said that “a white has no superiority over a black, nor a black has any superiority over a white —except by piety and good action.” In my mind, I don’t see the world divided by colours or one ethnicity over another; the only distinction is between good people and bad people. I think it is time that good people from all
faith and cultural backgrounds reach out to hold hands with one another and decide that we will once and for all not allow the actions of an evil few pit us against one another. Recognizing that there is still a current of racism that flows in our society and realizing that terrible crimes have been committed against Indigenous peoples is an uncomfortable truth that none of us want to accept, but we need to face this truth in the eye and rectify the wrongs that have been done — only then can we move towards true healing and be the Canada that we can all proudly call home. SDSS musical was amazing
Editor: My husband and I, via streaming, had the opportunity to view the South Delta Secondary production of Mamma Mia, recently. We were both amazed and blown away! What a wonderful performance! Great singing, acting, choral work,
dancing and stage movement etc. and all dictated by the restrictions of COVID-19. In spite of wearing masks, the acting, singing and dancing powered through. Well done! We can only image how the audience would have responded had
they been able to watch the production live. We would have all been jumping up in our seats singing along to the ABBA songs from our past. Sincere thanks to the amazing students and everyone involved in this wonderful production. Louise Cowan
Cat owner expresses gratitude
Editor: I would like to thank the compassionate mother and daughter who found my cat Muffy and took her to the Delta Animal Shelter. Muffy was very sick and yet she wanted to go outside on Tuesday morning. I looked all over and called for her many times, but couldn’t
find her. Then a few hours later the shelter called to tell me she’d been brought there. That is where I originally adopted her from, so her life went full circle. Heartfelt Thanks to Kaelynn and her friends, who spotted Muffy next door and realized she needed help. I’m very grateful to those girls and
their mom Barb for being so caring and considerate. And to Dr. Nadia at Trenant Park Clinic for staying and making herself available to us in this emergency. Muffy was able to be sent to sleep at our vet’s, in my arms, and all thanks to my lovely neighbours down the street. Kate Elliot
Good bye and thanks South Delta Editor: After residing in South Delta for the last 40 years it is time for a new adventure in another part of B.C. Just wanted to relay my thoughts in reflection on what an excellent
place this was to reside and raise children and watch the next generation take charge. I will never recreate a neighborhood like the one I am departing. The Mariner Place gang will be sorely
missed from shoveling of snow to endless Happy Hours to cul de sac barbecues. Thanks to everybody in South Delta who made this pit stop in life a very enjoyable experience. Robert Welsh

Survey shows support for Ladner Village filming SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A recent survey by the City of Delta shows clear support for continued filming activities in Ladner Village. That’s according to a memo from engineering director Steven Lan to council, which notes the survey was mailed out to 373 businesses and residents, but only 33 responses were received. The survey posed a series of questions including whether the presence of a film liaison officer improved their experience when filming takes place in the village and do they feel that a seven-day gap between filming and special events is sufficient. The survey found 30
of the 33 responses in favour of filming being allowed to continue, but some respondents were not aware of the new film liaison officer who is paid for by the film production company and is on-site during filming to assist with questions and concerns from the public. Staff have received positive feedback from those business owners who have interacted with the film liaison officer and believe it will continue to be a benefit during filming in Ladner Village, the memo notes. Support was also shown for continuing a seven-day gap between filming productions. Through the survey and subsequent conversations with Creative BC,
it was also ascertained that COVID-19 health and safety protocols for productions restricted staff from leaving the filming area. As such, there wasn’t the increase in business for local merchants which normally would occur, Lan’s memo adds. Lan also notes that the additional feedback received through the survey included comments on a desire for increased notification times for filming, improved compensation from productions and better communications. The city implemented several changes since teaming up with Creative BC to host a public meeting to address concerns about the film industry a year ago at Harris Barn.

Delta’s drinking water is just fine. That’s according to the 2020 Drinking Water Quality Report presented recently to council. The report notes that based on the testing results from the annual program, Delta’s drinking water met the provincial requirements as outlined in the BC Drinking Water Protection Regulation. Of the approximately 1,250 samples taken in 2020, none tested positive for E.coli or total coliforms. Staff last year obtained the water sample tests from 34 sampling stations. Samples were tested on-site for temperature, turbidity and chlorine residual, while an additional sample was sent to Metro Vancouver’s

Detailed physical and chemical analysis were also performed on the artesian well water sourced from Watershed Park. As a water supplier, Delta is required to prepare and make public an annual report containing the results of its drinking water monitoring program.

Preferred option for Massey Tunnel replacement not released SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
When will we find out whether the province wants to build a new tunnel or bridge? That’s the multi-billion dollar question that’s been raised as a business case for a George Massey Tunnel replacement has been submitted by the province to the federal government for funding, but details of that submission, including what option has been chosen and its cost, are not being released to the public. Delta Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Garry Shearer said it was back in September 2019 when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stood with Delta MP Carla Qualtrough at a campaign stop in Delta and assured “the money is there” for a replacement project. Shearer said that early in 2020, Chamber members met with Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon and Transportation Minister Claire Trevena and were told the business case would be completed by the fall of that year and made public. “Now, 16 months later we’re being told the feds have got the business case from the province for the GMT replacement. ‘What’s being proposed in this business case?’ I asked Minister Qualtrough in a recent budget update to the Chamber. The Minister responded that she wasn’t sure she could share that because it’s confidential. Minister Kahlon couldn’t give any details of the business case because,
according to him, it hasn’t been approved by cabinet. So what are the feds reviewing? Why the lack of transparency?” asked Shearer. According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, discussions are ongoing with the federal government on cost-sharing for the new crossing and details will be announced when those discussions have wrapped up. Sharing the business case with the public is standard practice, and that will be done once the project is announced, the ministry explained. Delta South MLA Ian Paton in the legislature last week again raised the question when a business case will be made public, saying the government, despite promising to deliver a plan by late last year, is still keeping commuters waiting. “How much money is being set aside for replacement costs? Most importantly, what is the province’s preferred option? Is it a bridge, or is it a tunnel?” asked Paton. Current Transportation Minster Rob Fleming answered, “There’s lots there, and there are some things I just can’t say. I think he’ll respect that, when you have a business case, and you’re working with local governments and First Nations governments on some of the key findings of a wide-ranging, technical business case, and also working with our counterparts in the federal government towards a successful contribution agreement, things like cost and pre-
ferred option….I’m just not going to go there today, because those are decisions that will be publicly announced at the appropriate time.” Fleming, also noting the replacement project is in the budget as part of the transportation investment plan table, said consultations with First Nations and Local governments has been ongoing, but that those discussions are confidential. He added they had also been working with Indigenous rights holders and local governments, alongside the panel of experts, on the business case development. B.C. Minister of Finance Selina Robinson during a presentation on her government’s 2021 budget to the Delta Chamber of Commerce last month said the province is carefully analyzing the business case and consulting key stakeholders. “It’s a process that happens for every project doing a business case, whether it’s a hospital or transit or a major highway or bridge. This is the process of government for any major infrastructure. It’s making sure that we make the right decision, that we understand what all the risks are and we’re fully cognizant of what the options are,” she said. “I know that the Minister of Transportation [Rob Fleming] has been diligent pushing this forward and making sure the business case stays very much top of mind and I’m hopeful that we’ll have a decision shortly. It’s very much a priority for us.”

How to share a love of food with others
Humans have broken bread together since ancient times. National Geographic says that a circular loaf of bread with scoring marks “baked to be divided with others” was retrieved from the ashes of Vesuvius. Biblical references to “breaking bread” are as old as time, and today the phrase still represents sharing a meal together. Food provides nourishment necessary to sustain life, but dining also can be an act of socialization, community and love. Sharing a love of food with others is a great gift that can be given in various ways. Family meals Countless studies underscore the importance of sitting down to eat meals together as a family. A family meal can help with everything from maintaining healthy weights to improving performance at school to
solidifying personal relationships among family members. Family meals encourage conversation and a step back from digital distractions and other tasks that tend to pull families in opposite directions. The dining table is a safe place where everyone can talk about their lives and enjoy a delicious meal at the same time. Food gifts Food can be a comfort. Just think about how Mom’s warm soup and grilled cheese made you feel after a chilly day spent playing in the snow. Chocolate can help mend a broken heart, and friends may commiserate over an ice cream sundae. Bringing food to mourners is a traditional practice and is even mentioned in scripture. According to Jewish law, the first meal that mourners eat after returning from a burial should be brought

Delta teachers want schools to keep additional cleaning SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta school district has provided parents with an update on what to expect when students and teachers return to class in September after their summer break. Following an earlier announcement from the B.C. Government on COVID-19 planning for the return to school in September, Doug Sheppard, Delta’s superintendent of schools, issued a notice that parents can expect the next school year will be much closer to normal with students in class, full-time. Based on guidance from the Office of the Provincial Health Officer, students will no longer be in learning groups or cohorts in September, explained Sheppard. “Pending further public health guidance, it is also expected that current restrictions on gatherings, extra-curricular activities and sports will be relaxed in time for the new school year. Students and staff will be required to continue to complete daily health checks, to stay home when feeling sick and to practice diligent hand hygiene. Guidance on mask-wearing in school settings will be confirmed later
this summer,” explained Sheppard. The Ministry of Education is currently working with the provincial K-12 education steering committee and public health officials to review the health and safety measures, noted Sheppard, adding they anticipate receiving updated health and safety measures for the return to school later in August and will share more information at that time. The province noted that research has shown schools were not significant sources of COVID19 transmission. Public health teams and school health officers will continue to closely monitor cases of COVID19 in schools and the community, the government stated, adding they will continue to provide support and guidance as schools return in the fall. In response, the Delta Teachers’ Association stated it’s pleased with BC’s Recovery Investment Plan announcement including additional funds for health and safety, First Nations and Métis students, mental health services and to address learning impacts to students. Yao said a valuable lesson has been learned when it comes to having enough cleaning measures and custodial support in schools. Delta’s teacher absences were lower this year compared to other years, she noted. “Is this the upshot of the additional funds that were available for cleaning as part of the pandemic response? We know that the district hired more custodial staff and that schools were cleaned more often than in recent years,” said Yao. “Better funding for B.C.’s education system, arguably among the lowest funding in Canada, is sorely needed. “Spending less for education is a false economy — when districts spend less money on cleaning schools, more people get will get sick and more will need to access sick leave. If this is true during COVID, how is it less true at other times? While the DTA supports the additional one-time funding, it should be more than a one-time thing. With more appropriate funding for cleaning in this example, teachers and other education staff tend towards wellness, easing the current shortages of teachers and other staff.”

Delta eyeing more EV charging stations
#9
City staff monitoring station usage, fee structure likely in 2022 SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Even more electric vehicle (EV) charging stations could be coming to the City of Delta. Council last week endorsed a staff recommendation to submit a funding application to Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program to help pay for the installation of 20 Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations and a DC Fast Charge station at public facilities. The fast charge station would be located at the George Mackie Library while the other stations would be located in such venues as Winskill Park in Tsawwassen and the historic Municipal Hall
building in Ladner. The total project budget is estimated at $530,000. Natural Resources Canada’s share would be $150,000 while the city’s share would be $380,000, funded from Delta’s Carbon Tax Reserve account. Delta’s Electric Vehicle Strategy, endorsed by council last summer, identified several actions aimed at enhancing the public charging network. Delta currently operates five dual-point charging stations at public facilities. In 2020, Delta received a $77,250 grant from the federal government for the installation of 20 Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations for public use at seven civic
facilities. Council also awarded a $134,720 contract to install those new stations at such venues as Dugald Morrison Park and the North Delta Recreation Centre, among other places. Those stations are scheduled to be installed this summer. Delta’s electric vehicle charging stations are currently free to use, however, that won’t last for long as city staff are monitoring station usage and will report back to council, as part of 2022 budget discussions, with details and recommendations for a fee structure. A staff report notes that, currently, operating costs for the stations will be funded from the facility budgets.

St. David’s to recognize global Sea Sunday ELIZABETH MURRAY
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Veteran’s Naval Band bugler John More, St. David’s Anglican Church parishioners Captain John Horton and Nick Robinson of The Delta Lifeboat, along with Brian Cook also from The Delta Lifeboat, will par-
N
ticipate in a global tribute to mariners when the parish marks Sea Sunday this Sunday, June 27. The sanctuary of St. David’s will be transformed for the 9 a.m. service when a dinghy and trappings of the sea will remind online ZOOM and in-person attendees of the debt owed to ‘They
that go down to the seas in ships.’ Here in Ladner/ Tsawwassen, local dependence on seafarers is fairly obvious given the area’s proximity to BC Ferries, Seaspan’s barge/ ferry terminals on the Fraser River in Delta and Surrey, tugs and barges hauling wood products,
rock, gravel and cement, not forgetting the fisher folk who provide food for the table. The Delta Lifeboat, based in Ladner Harbour, plays a pivotal role in providing search and rescue support for commercial and native fisheries, along with other duties related to a Canadian
Lifeboat Institute vessel. The Delta is captained by Horton, a senior lifeboat commander with CLI. The Sea Sunday Service will include Horton’s description and significance of a ship’s ‘eight bells’ and the bugler’s call. A wreath in memory of souls lost at sea will be
blessed by St. David’s rector, The Rev. Simbarashi Basvi, and later cast afloat in the main channel of the Fraser River. The ceremony will take place from the upper deck of The Delta Lifeboat ‘to the sound of eight bells,’ ‘the Bosun’s call’ and prayers by Rev. Basvi.
Paying It Forward
ext year the Optimist will celebrate our 100th year serving South Delta. In this time, the Optimist has gained a reputation as an avid supporter of our community’s charitable and non-profit organizations. Our editorial staff work closely with these groups to make sure their messages are relayed in our stories and event calendars. In addition, many of our staff volunteer time to boards and we have often donated proceeds from advertising features to community-minded organizations. Most importantly, we have also been able to support local charities through the sponsorship of their advertising – both online and in our printed edition. As the media landscape has changed so has our financial ability to continue these sponsorships. We have needed to become increasingly selective in regards to which organizations we can support. In many cases, we have had to scale back sponsorships entirely. This, inevitably, adds pressure to the organizations to increase their promotional budgets. Unfortunately, in many cases this is not an option and the fundraising initiatives are canceled altogether. The Optimist is reaching out to our readers, those of you who support our local initiatives, to ask for your support. Between now and August 31, 2021, any contribution made to the Optimist, however large or small, will be paid forward in twice the promotional space to South Delta’s many wonderful charitable and non-profit organizations. Contributions may be made at delta-optimist.com/support, or if you prefer not to donate online, you may call 604-946-4451 and press ‘5’ for Contributions, or drop-off / mail-in cheques to: 5008 47A Avenue, Ladner, BC, V4K 1T8.

Nature Notes: regional parks Snap & Share KIM HOUGHTON
B o u n d a r y B ay Pa r k A s s o c i a t i o n
Many lessons have come from this past year. An important one is how crucial fresh air and being in nature are to our health and well-being. This spring, the Boundary Bay Park Association, along with several other Metro Vancouver Parks’ Associations, partnered with Pacific Parklands Foundation to bring the public an exciting opportunity to get outside and
build their nature knowledge. The Snap & Share project ran from May 15 to June 13 throughout Metro Vancouver’s regional parks and greenways. The goal of the project was to encourage people to connect with, share and discover nature simply by snapping a photo. The project used a free online social networking platform called iNaturalist, which allowed participants to join a global community of citizen scientists.

Red-winged blackbird.
The statistics from the Snap & Share event proved how successful this project was. During the four weeks of data collection, there
were 6,242 observations made by 344 observers, with 1,035 species identified. Species categories included fungi, plants, mollusks, arachnids, insects, ray-finned (bony) fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and others. The most common bird species identified was the song sparrow and the most common plant species observed was salmonberry. For Boundary Bay Regional Park, there was a 24 per cent increase in
species observed and 43 new observers. In addition to increased data collection within Metro Vancouver regional parks, the project showcased incredible photography skills by some of the participants. The Boundary Bay Park Association is a proud partner of this project. We are grateful to have beautiful Boundary Bay Regional Park available for people to get outside and enjoy nature and participate in valuable initiatives
such as the Snap & Share project. To learn more about this project visit: https:// www.pacificparklands. com/regional-parkssnap-share/. First Saturday market a success at Southlands Tsawwassen
The first Saturday farmers market of the season at Southlands Tsawwassen was a huge hit last Saturday, June 19. The weekly farmers markets will take place every Saturday until Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The open-air market aims to feature local produce and celebrate the farm to table lifestyle, and is hosted by Southlands Grange Centre for Farming and Food. “The Southlands Grange is a centre for agricultural education that brings together community and farmers to reimagine the food system as a place of meaningful connection, ecology and health in a working landscape connected to the built environment and nature,” said Sean Hodgins, President of Century Group, the founder of Southlands agrihood.
The centre supports the business of agriculture by connecting students and the public to the land through tours, workshops and a vibrant Market Square. Partnered with the Young Agrarians, training and mentoring for the next generation of farmers is offered through a Young Farmer Training Program and an intensive on-farm apprenticeship hosted by Salt & Harrow Farm. Visitors can expect to discover fresh local produce from local farmers Salt & Harrow, and artisan goods, including jewelry, craft beer and baked goods. Among the vendors are: Chaerea Jewellery, Desirée Blooms, Bannock Queen, Four Winds brewing and more. Cash and/or credit are accepted, depending on the vendor. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own shopping bag. Entertainment and

Heron Hospice Society announces new programs Heron Hospice Society of Delta is launching two new programs in early July, Grief Companions and Relaxation Circle. In the Grief Companion program, people who are struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one will be matched with a trained Grief Companion volunteer and have a chance to meet via phone, online or
in person at a convenient time. The volunteers, who are trained and supervised by registered clinical counsellor, Margaret Fletcher, will listen and support participants through their grief journey over a period of up to 12 weeks. “We recognize that suffering the loss of a loved one during the COVID-19
pandemic adds additional stress and pain because some may suffer through their grieving process with little human contact. The ability to connect with others who are grieving is so important and we felt it was necessary to expand our services,” said Chris Pettypiece, president of Heron Hospice Society. Another new pro-
gram offering will be a Relaxation Circle held twice a month during July and August, with more dates planned in the fall. This online program focuses on relaxation and mindfulness techniques to help individuals experiencing grief or who are coping with a life limiting diagnosis. “The relaxation

response can help with pain, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and more,” said Relaxation Circle leader Tama Recker. “Participants experience the calming effects of guided meditation set to soft music.” Summer Relaxation Circle sessions are planned for Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. on July
5, 19; and Aug. 9 and 23. Relaxation Circle is open to individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses and to those who are grieving. Family and caregivers are welcome. To register for either program email info@heronhospice.org, or leave a message at 604-245-7380.

Tsawwassen’s Sutherland receives JIBC honorary degree IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
The achievements of approximately 290 graduates were celebrated by the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) at its Spring Convocation earlier this month. The ceremony also included the conferring of honorary degrees on two recipients, Tsawwassen’s Sharon Sutherland, Director of Strategic Innovation for Mediate BC and retired Abbotsford Police Department officer Michael Novakowski. For more than 20 years, Sutherland has spearheaded and advocated for the increased use of conflict resolution and mediation in B.C. She has mentored, trained and coached mediators across Canada, helping to expand access to justice both within and independent of the court system. She helped launch Mediate BC’s Quarantine Conflict Resolution Service in March 2020 to provide low cost and pro bono services in housing, family and workplace conflicts caused by or worsened by the COVID-
19 pandemic. Noting the significant causal link between conflict and loss of housing, she is currently working to build this into a sustainable continuing project to offer affordable conflict intervention services with a particular focus on the housing sector. Sutherland was recognized for her contributions to conflict resolution through practice, advocacy, and the training and mentoring of mediators across Canada. She spoke at the virtual ceremony on the opportunities presented amidst the challenges of the pandemic, noting that change can be good. “As a direct result of the pandemic, we have engaged in heightened discourse on equity and inclusion,” said Sutherland. “We have seen, and been a part of, meaningful, and sometimes profoundly positive, examinations of long unquestioned assumptions that have shaped institutions and systems. “In conflict resolution courses at JIBC and elsewhere, instructors often encourage learners to shift their perceptions
of conflict - to think of it as an opportunity. There is much opportunity to transform our justice system in order to reduce unintended harms and hopefully offer earlier, less adversarial interventions in conflict. We have an opportunity to commit to acknowledgment of truth and to meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. And we have the opportunity to examine our unstated assumptions about the intersections of public safety, health, and community wellness.” Following the ceremony, the Optimist caught up with Sutherland where she shared that she was quite surprized when she found out she would be honoured by JIBC. “I thought it was a prank and continued to think that until they announced it publically. I literally showed up on the day to record my speech and out front of the JI they were doing a staged intervention and there were all these cameras…I felt like I was walking into something that was similarly being staged,” she recalled.

Tsawwassen’s Sharon Sutherland, Director of Strategic Innovation for Mediate BC, recently received an honourary degree from the Justice Institute of BC. “Very grateful for the recognition. My field is very much collaborative decision-making, so obviously I’m incredibly grateful for the honour,
but incredibly conscious of all the people who been a part of any project I have been involved in, so I see this as recognition of some amazing
projects that I have been involved in and really needs to count as recognition of other amazing individuals who have contributed a lot of time.”
Walk for Alzheimer’s raises thousands in South Delta
The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is thanking people around the province, including those in South Delta, for participating in the 2021 IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s. Thousands of people in communities across the province walked their own way in May to show their support for people affected by dementia. Participants got active and showed tremendous creativity while raising funds to
support the Alzheimer Society of B.C. They walked, hiked, cycled, danced and more. Then on Sunday, May 30, they joined online to celebrate a month of activity and hear stories from people who are affected by dementia across Canada. In South Delta, participants garnered support from family and friends and raised more than $13,000 in online donations for the Walk. These funds will support
education sessions, support groups and the First Link Dementia Helpline. They will also allow the Alzheimer Society of B.C. to continue to expand digital support, as well as enabling research into the causes and cure for the disease. “The pandemic has highlighted the isolation faced by people living with dementia, however, through the Walk, participants showed that they are deeply committed to supporting their
fellow community members facing the disease regardless of not being able to gather in-person for the event,” said Cathryn France, Director, Resource Development Alzheimer Society of B.C. “Thank you for coming together to make memories matter. I’d also like to thank the South Delta volunteer organizing committee, led by Youla Thomas. They were instrumental to garnering local support and
awareness for this event, and we could not have done this without them. “I would also like to thank South Delta’s honouree family: the Harbotts for being so gracious in sharing their story to help raise awareness.” France also wanted to thank title sponsor IG Wealth Management and provincial sponsor Cowell Auto Group. “While we may not be able to be together in-person with our com-
munity members just yet, thanks to the generosity of our participants, donors, volunteers, honouree families, sponsors and patrons, we will continue to work to ensure people affected by dementia know they are not alone,” added France. Donations are open until June 30 at walkforalzheimers.ca. You can also watch the event’s recorded celebration on Facebook (@ AlzheimerBC).

Sailing is not my idea of a good time. Friends of ours had a sailboat that they invited us to one weekend. This was the first time I would ever be on a sailboat and was quite excited. Like a kid with a new toy, the first time we were heading to the sailboat I could barely contain myself. The day was perfect, and the lake calm and still with a light breeze over the water. As soon as we were on open water up went the sails. Then everything changed. The boat lurched to one side as the sails caught the wind. I thought I was going to die. In my mind, boats are not supposed to be on their side! Regardless of how anyone tried to convince me that in fact this was all supposed to happen and that this is indeed how sail-

boats sail, I was not convinced. It was a harrowing experience for me and I couldn’t understand why everyone else was calm and having a good time. This is the story that always comes to mind when I read the passage where Jesus is asleep on the boat during a terrific storm, Mark 4: 35-41. The disciples wake Jesus up and he calms the storm and asks what they are
afraid of. A far cry from a perfect day with a light breeze across the water, this was a nightmare of a storm. What stands out for me is that Jesus is in the storm with them. Where we find Jesus, we also find resurrection and new life. As we experience the life changing storms in our life, we find God in the storm with us guiding us to new life.

Tired of staying isolated at home, 24 seniors have moved to Amica White Rock so far this year, many referred by residents. While community services remained closed, they were hearing about the healthy lifestyle with meaningful connections their friends were experiencing. In the safe, vaccinated community of Amica White Rock, seniors can join a fitness class, have a nutritious meal in the residence’s dining areas or socialize at activities. Here’s how Amica is boosting well-being: Staying social, making friends You’re never far from a good conversation whether at distanced hallway activities, social events or the rooftop putting green. Two widows have started sharing experiences and friendship in the dining room. Families are happy to be getting together in person again as provincial regulations allow, and team members have helped everyone stay close using technology.
Vaccinations and so much more Keeping everyone safe was Amica’s top priority long before COVID-19. Vaccinations are just the latest step in our comprehensive safety protocols — including masking, sanitization, physical distancing and more — that allow people to live together with peace of mind. Award-winning health care Every resident’s health is overseen by Hazel Mamaril, a registered nurse who received the Nightingale Award, the highest honour given to a Director of Wellness at Amica for exceptional resident care. Mamaril enjoyed working with seniors as a 17-year-old server in long-term care so much that she followed her father’s footsteps and became a Director of Wellness. “We’re not looking to take away from your life, we’re looking to add to it,” she says. Instead of a patchwork of help from family, neighbours and home care, residents get to know the wellness team members helping every day. “We’re like a secondary family,” says Mamaril. “One Memory Care resident, remembering the due date of one of our care aides, buzzed his pendant to ask her to sit with him and rest with the baby.”

Join activities that match your interests You won't nd a residence with a greater selection of social programs geared to seniors. While our teams organize everything, residents share input on activities, with up to eight daily choices, from wine tastings and book club to wellness talks. Be as active as you like One resident with mobility challenges loves socializing at accessible fitness classes. Others are more active simply by getting to the dining room and around the residence’s social spaces. Maintain your independence and decision-making Seniors stay in charge of their day, including activities, dining and care. “We ask what’s most important to you, and how would you like us to support you. That personalization improves their quality of life and has a domino effect: their mood and well-being improve and they’re more engaged and social,” says Mamaril. Don’t sell the house until you’re ready One senior booked a trial stay, unsure if senior living was right for her. She liked her suite so much, she said to her family, “You can sell my house now.” Learn more when you attend one of our wellness talks led by Nurse Hazel. Call today to book your spot.

New - Lifeline Unit That Can Be Used Out In The Community
Lifeline is a unit of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary. In Delta, we enable approximately 500 residents of Delta to live independently and secure within their own homes. Volunteers install the equipment and ensure the clients know how to use their Personal Help Buttons. Many calls to Lifeline are solved by responders, therefore preventing unnecessary ambulance calls or visits to the Hospital Emergency Department. Seniors and their families have peace of mind knowing that help is just a click away. Please let the public know of this service. As a retired registered nurse, I find myself very impressed with the service and only wish more seniors knew about it. Advertise this service! Please..... Evelyn F. Delta subscriber.

Delta aims for fair allocation of pickleball courts SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s a fair allocation when it comes to pickleball courts in Delta. That’s according to city staff in a recent memo to council, responding to a pair of recent letter writers complaining about how much time has been given for use by Burnsview Secondary students of the courts at Chalmers Park. The memo notes court allocations were reviewed to ensure that suitable access was provided for the public while still supporting the efforts of school staff in teaching pickleball as part of the physical education curriculum. The balance achieved enabled school students to use four pickleball courts and one tennis court, while four pickleball courts and one tennis court are for public use at all times. Signage was also put in place to notify people. “Staff discussed this compromise with both representatives with the Delta Pickleball Association and Burnsview Secondary School, and both groups
were supportive of this adjustment. Further, the Delta Pickleball Association was supportive of cumulative court allocations for all organized pickleball groups being no more than 50 per cent of the available court time at each site at any point in time.
These small improvements will assist all pickleball players... KEN KUNTZ
This practice will ensure meaningful public access to pickleball facilities in Delta,” the memo states. A previous memo to council this spring by parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz noted the city wanted to ensure fair allocation of its pickeball courts. Kuntz said with every new or rapidly growing sport, there are always lessons to be learned, and currently several organizations want to secure dedicated time at those Delta facilities. The Delta Pickleball Association is currently

the largest single group utilizing the courts, but last December the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission agreed that no more than 50 per cent of all available court time would be allocated to book for group activities. That leaves the other 50 per cent available court time for drop-in public use. To improve information on allocations, use rules and game etiquette, the parks department began installing signage. In addition, seasonal allocated times would be posted on-site in a simple graphical format, noted Kuntz, adding that another feature to help organize drop-in play is the installation of a paddle rack. When a person arrives on-site and courts are full, a player can indicate the order in which they arrived by placing their paddle in the rack, he explained. “These small improvements will assist all pickleball players and ensure there is a balance between drop-in and prior allocated use, while making sure the infrastructure is used to its greatest potential,” Kuntz added.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
How exercise can help you live longer There are many reasons to get in shape. Weight loss is a prime motivator, as is reversing a negative health effect, such as high cholesterol or increased diabetes risk. Routine exercise also can improve life expectancy. Cardiorespiratory fitness Many health experts say that cardiorespiratory fitness may be just as valuable a metric to determine overall health as blood pressure and lipid levels. People with a high aerobic capacity can deliver oxygen to tissues and cells efficiently to fuel exercise, according to data published in 2014 in the journal Aging & Disease. In a study involving 11,335 women, researchers compared
V02 max, also known as aerobic capacity, in women with mortality data. Women who were fit from a cardiovascular perspective had a lower death rate from all causes, irrespective of the women’s weight. Manage stress and mood Exercise has direct stress-busting benefits that can promote longevity. The Mayo Clinic says physical activity can increase the production of endorphins, which are the body’s feel-good neurotransmitters. In addition, exercise can imitate the effects of stress, helping the body adjust its flight or fight response accordingly, and help them cope with mildly stressful situations. While engaged in exercise, people may forget about
their problems as they are focused on the activity at hand. Improve bone health Strength training and physical activity can stave off the effects of frailty and osteoporosis, which affects bone strength. A study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 2017 found that hip fractures are associated with diminished quality of life and survival among the elderly. One in three adults aged 50 and over dies within 12 months of suffering a hip fracture, and older adults have a five to eight-times greater risk of dying within three months following a hip fracture. Building muscle strength, balance and bone density through exercise can reduce falls and frailty, helping to
This year
prevent fracture-related health risks. Addresses sarcopenia The health and wellness resource Healthline defines sarcopenia as the loss of muscle mass specifically related to aging. Doctors once considered this muscle loss inevitable, and it can affect stamina and lead to weakness. However, new indications suggest that exercise is the main treatment regimen for sarcopenia, particularly resistance training. This is designed to improve muscle strength and help balance hormone levels by turning protein into energy for older adults. These are just some of the ways exercise can help older adults live longer, healthier lives. -Metro Creative

Howlett a winner on VGT Tour A second promising young player from Beach Grove Golf Club’s junior program has reached the winner’s circle in the early stages of the Vancouver Golf Tour’s 2021 season. Russell Howlett fired a sizzling 7-under 65 to capture the Amateur Division at the VGT’s Hughes Trucking Open last week at the Pitt Meadows Golf Club.
Russell Howlett The 2020 South Delta Secondary graduate shot a 32 on the back 9, including birdies on the par 4 17th and par-5 18th holes to finish one stroke ahead of Morgan Creek’s Dustin Franko in the 39-player field. The winning score would have left Howlett tied for second in the Pro Division that was won by Cheam Mountain’s Kevin Stinson with a 65. Howlett’s triumph came just over a week after Charlie Derrheim won the Mayfair Lakes Open in Richmond. The VGT will feature tournaments through to mid-October including a stop at Kings Links by the Sea in Ladner on Aug. 3.
Tigers make their long-awaited debut in BC Premier Bantam Prep League MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It was an evening that featured plenty of errant throws, misplayed balls and some ugly swings at the plate, yet Cam Frick couldn’t have been more pleased…his baseball team was at last playing an actual game. In what was nearly two years in the making, thanks mainly to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Delta Tigers were welcomed into the B.C. Premier Baseball’s Bantam Prep League with a loss to the White Rock Tritons on WJune 16 at South Surrey Athletic Park. “It’s been 20-plus months since most of them have played a competitive game. It’s great to have the umpires back and to play a solid team in a nice park on a nice day. We looked a little nervous, but that’s okay,” said Frick. The Tigers made the move from BC Minor Baseball to the BCPBL after a dominant 2019 campaign that saw them win just about everything but the national title, settling for silver at the 15U Canadian Championships in Oshawa. Ironically, most of the players from that team were in action on the adjacent diamond as the Tigers’ parent team, North Delta Blue Jays, took on White Rock as well to open their league season. There will be no provincial or Canadian titles for the Tigers to chase this campaign but there is an action-packed schedule for the rest of summer that will feature 36 games over roughly 70 days and culminate with league playoffs. “We are going to treat it like it is a provincials. The kids deserve a real season and we are going to approach it just like that,” continued Frick.

Delta Tigers’ Sawyer Shears reaches for the ball at second base during last week’s BC Premier Bantam Prep League game against the White Rock Tritons at South Surrey Athletic Park. As a high performance program, he is confident the pandemic hasn’t stalled players’ development as they look to reach the BCPBL level and potential scholarship opportunities. Coaches from other local sports organizations have suggested the training-only mode for essentially the last 15 months has benefitted their depth players. Frick agrees. “You were in a situation where everyone got to play. Everyone was getting at bats and everyone
was throwing bullpens. Everyone got into a groove and it almost felt like a college team with a set schedule of four practices a week. We were just missing the games,” he said. “Our goal is to get the players to a certain level and graduate the Grade 9s to move on. They will get there. I would say practising a lot in certain ways really helped them. Just with some parts of the game of where they are at right now, but you will notice today though, you can’t

simulate facing a live pitcher from another team. It’s just not the same facing your buddy on the same team in an inter-squad game.” With the league taking a cautious approach to its schedule in case of any cancellations, the Tigers are playing eight straight games against White Rock before moving onto three more with the UBC Thunder. Once each of the series have concluded, they won’t see those teams again unless they meet in the playoffs.

(née Reynolds) February 12, 1928 - June 10, 2021 It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doris, who was loved and admired by all. She passed peacefully with family at her side. She is survived by her brother John (Kathy), her 6 loving children, Carman (Kim), Warren (Diane), David, Howard, Robert (Patrizia), and Karen (Jim). As well as all 12 of her grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren, also survived by her nieces, Carol, Cheryl, Linda, and Shirley, who always considered her as their second Mum. We would like to say to thank you to all the staff at Kinsmen Village, for all the years of care for her, as well as to the staff at Mountainview Manor, for caring for her in her last months with us.
The Celebration of Life will be held at Centennial Beach Park, on Monday, September 6th, 2021. We invite all who knew Doris to attend, please RSVP to; celebrate.dorisbrekke@gmail.com
Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

GRENDUS, Lorne Frederick It is with great sadness we announce Lorne’s passing. He succumbed to a difficult battle with cancer at 76 years of age. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Cathie of 51 years and his children; Shelley (Mark), Jason, Noel and his two granddaughters Jamie and Jodie. Lorne also left behind the families of his 5 brothers, 6 sisters and was predeceased by his parents and 2 siblings.
Love’s greatest gift is
remembrance
Lorne was a hardworking and dedicated plumber who ran his own business for over 40 years. He avidly planted his vegetable garden every year, which had great success. Lorne enjoyed giving away the excess to friends, neighbors and family. When he was not tending to his garden, he loved to watch football. No service or gatherings as per his wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to “The Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society”. Online condolences can be made to www.deltafuneral.ca
