Dry Grads were nights to remember Herculean effort by parents to help celebrate & honour the DSS & SDSS Classes of 2021

It was an unprecedented celebration in an unprecedented time. Faced with the prospects of no formal grad celebrations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of parents, volunteers and businesses stepped up across the community to ensure that the Grad Class of 2021 would have a memorable send-off. South Delta Secondary’s Dry Grad celebration included 201 students and was held over five nights (June 17 to June 22) at Bancy Farm in Ladner in separate COVID-19 safe events. The SDSS grads were driven in small groups by limousine to the red-carpet, and then walked the red-carpet while being cheered on by their families. Following their red carpet spotlight walk, the grads entered a large tent where they enjoyed appetizers while watching their fellow grads enjoy their moment and then everyone was treated to a gourmet dinner. After dinner, grads listened

picked up at in the limos, they also had time to spend with their family to take photos, and stop at other locations as well to take photos, so really a great experience before they arrived at the venue,” said Karen Matthews, co-chair of the SDSS Parent Dry Grad Committee. “The limos were timed to arrive at the farm every 15 minutes, so they were spread out to allow parents to cheer them on the red carpet and everything was COVID safe and socially distanced.” Matthews described the planning as a “Herculean effort” to pull off in such a short time. “Once the announcement was made on May 25 that B.C. would be in Step 2 on June 15 – the community of Tsawwassen stepped into high gear to make this happen for these kids,” she said. “This cohort of grads particularly truly, up until now, had no real Grade 12 experiences at all as COVID-19 restrictions started half way through their Grade 11 year, so everyone wanted to make something positive happen for them.” CONTINUED: see Page 4

TFN welcomes community to share in its Residential School grieving process MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

As the Residential School tragedy continues to unfold across the country, Tsawwassen First Nation reached out to its neighbouring community for the first time on Canada Day to join them in their grieving process. An estimated 200 people of all ages participated in a memorial march on the streets that surround TFN’s Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre. Band members welcomed the community with a ceremony of prayers and songs, outside the gates to TFN’s long-established residential area and administrative buildings, before the march proceeded. TFN Chief Ken Baird thanked the participants for their support and invited them back to the TFN recreational centre to join band members for a barbecue lunch. The march not only took place on what was a somber Canada Day for many but when COVID-19 health restrictions were eased further across the province. “It’s just the way things worked out. A bunch of

This is a good way to re-enter our communities together.” Since 215 unmarked graves were discovered early last month at the former Kamloops Residential School, more have been found at other locations across the country, including 751 in Cowessess, Saskatchewan and another 182 in

Cranbrook last week. The total now stands at 1,505 and will continue to grow in the weeks and months ahead. “It means a lot to us to see this support with everything that is going on,” added Baird. “Of course, we are devastated with the news. I knew this is just the beginning of what’s going to be a long road. “It’s been tough on some band members more than others. The newer generation is still learning. With the older generation, it opens up wounds for everybody.”

Delta Secondary’s Dry Grad was held on June 30, with 170 students participating in a reverse car parade, which saw the grads line up around the school property with special grad signage and their family and friends – and teachers – parading past cheering them on. Delta Police, Delta Fire Department and the City of Delta all helped out with traffic control, which was much appreciated by all. Jen Wilson, who handles communications for the DSS Parent Dry Grad committee, said it was an amazing night for everyone. “After the reverse parade, which lasted for about an hour, the grads

Deas Island. “There was lots of photos and entertainment at all the venues and the venues were linked with a video stream,” she said. “It is certainly a new way to look at Dry Grad. The feedback has been very positive and supportive. Everyone was just so happy that their kids could be celebrated and that everyone had a good time.” The DSS committee included Wilson as well as Denise Sheridan, LeeAnn Neaves and Lara Taylor along with 20 other parent volunteers.

Ladner Village Market celebrates 25th season Sunday’s opening date will feature 125 vendors DANI PENALOZA

Head to the Ladner Village Market this Sunday (July 11) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to get your fix for homegrown produce, freshly baked treats and artisanal goodies. This year, the beloved market will offer its usual range of “Make it, Bake it, Grow it” vendors, and will be running at around 70 per cent of its normal vendor capacity for social distancing. “Last year was a challenging year for a lot of vendors … We’re excited to be able to welcome them back and have the community welcome them back,” says Jill McKnight, one of the managers of the Ladner

Village Market. While shopping at the 125 different booths, patrons will be encouraged to wear masks, to follow the suggested traffic flow, and frequently sanitize their hands at the different offered stations. Tracey McKnight, another manager of the market, says she is most looking forward to seeing all of their usual vendors, as well as meeting new ones. “It’s really like we’re a family, and as they come back it’s like ‘Oh my gosh, how are you? How have you been?” says Tracey with a laugh. By keeping the health and safety of all involved parties in mind throughout their planning process, the mar-

ket’s managers Tracey, Jill, Bill McKnight and Jan Salvador thankfully haven’t faced too many obstacles in putting this year’s event together. They are all looking forward to seeing their community come together to highlight local excellence and creativity. If you’re interested in attending, the Ladner Village Market is kindly reminding patrons to please leave your pets at home, as leashes can be an obstacle for social distancing, and to bring your food purchases to the surrounding parks to be eaten. In addition to its opening date on July 11, the market will be running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 25, Aug. 8, Aug. 22 and Sept. 12.

Delta has a long history of supporting the BC Wildfire Service over the years. “This does make me very proud of our firefighters,” said McKintuck. “When you look at the pictures and the reports coming in from Lytton and the devastation in that community, my heart goes out to that community. I couldn’t imagine having one of our towns like Ladner, burn to the ground. “Unfortunately, it is too late for Lytton, but we feel very proud that we are able to send resources to help the province stop this devastation in another community.”

Battalion Chief Drake Braslins, Captain Trevor Litchfield, Deputy Chief Darren Grant and firefighters Aaron Kokotailo, Scott Duckworth and Bryan Harris were deployed for 10 days (two days of travel and eight in the field). The department also sent up a fire engine, which has a 1,750-gallons per minute pump, holds 30 gallons of A-class form and 2,500 gallons of water. Fire Chief Guy McKintuck said the fire engine was transported on a flatbed truck, while

the firefighters went to the Interior in department pick-up trucks, which will hold their firefighting gear and personal items. McKintuck said the B.C. Wildfire Service reached out to Delta for assistance on June 30, and it was a whirlwind to get the fire engine ready as well as the firefighters getting organized for their trip. “There are certain things we needed to do to mobilize and get prepared,” he said. “We had to notify the City Manager, Mayor and Council, of which, we have and always have tremendous support from, as well as do a mechanical inspection on the fire engine. In the past, we have driven up in the engine, but due to wear and tear, we felt transporting on the flatbed was more cost-effective

Jody Vance credits the kindness, support and love of the Delta care workers who surrounded her and her family on how she made it through the passing of her beloved father. Bill Vance, also known endearingly as Coach Bill, was treated like family in the Cascades Unit of Delta View Care Centre, says Vance, and she will be forever grateful for it. “I promised [my dad] that I would never leave him alone and afraid, so they made sure that he was never ever alone and afraid. There’s just so much gratitude attached to that,” she said. Vance’s youth was spent living in Delta, and she graduated from South Delta Secondary School before moving back to Vancouver, where she was born. Delta continues to hold a special place in her heart as

most her family still lives in the community. While brainstorming how Vance and her brother Greg could express their utmost thanks to the team who cared for their dad, she says the idea of sending flowers or a box of donuts wasn’t even coming close to being meaningful enough. And so, they came up with the idea of sending the Cascades Unit a letter. The broadcaster and columnist had her and her brother’s thank-you letter published in The Orca on June 16. In it, she writes how the astounding care that her dad and family received means absolutely everything. “Our hearts skipped a beat every time the call display read ‘Cascades Delta View.’ And almost every time, the call began ‘Everything is okay, it’s Sean calling, just updating you…’ “If it wasn’t Sean, it was Rupinder, Arianne, Parm, T.T., Manpreet,

hand,” reads part of the letter. Vance also extends her thanks to Dr. McCuaig from Delta Hospital’s emergency room for being so empathetic and kind when delivering her dad’s heart wrenching diagnosis. “I said ‘our family is committed to ensuring that he is comfortable and that – when it is time – that he goes gently into the night’, and that doctor said, ‘I’m so glad to hear that, you’re doing absolutely the right thing.’” During those last days, Vance heard that sentiment many times from the Delta medical professionals surrounding her, and she says hearing that reassurance was comforting. And she would tell her dad almost those exact same words – that he did everything, it was perfect, and that he didn’t need to hang on for the family’s sake. “He was very task-oriented, so I think he heard

me when I said, ‘it was perfect, you’re good,’” she laughs. Coach Bill was known in the Cascades Unit for “his love of music and helping with the simple tasks of folding towels with the personal care workers. How he was funny and a bit crass – and liked the occasional inappropriate joke,” reads part of the thank youletter. Amid all the deflating, sad headlines coming from care homes during this pandemic, Vance feels it’s important to pay attention to the people who continue to work tirelessly caring for our loved ones. “I feel like all personal care workers in longterm care homes deserve our deepest gratitude,” she says. “I hope that government acknowledges the hard work of these people and puts significant investment in helping to bolster staffing and funding and supports for [care homes].”

OPINION

Grad nights toremember Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES

I

t takes a village – and that certainly was the case here in South Delta for the Grad Class of 2021. Early in the school year, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, tough conversations were had in many households in Ladner and Tsawwassen as Grade 12 students told their parents that nothing would be done to celebrate their milestone achievement. No doubt many tears were shed. I can only imagine the heartache and disappointment. But that didn’t stop determined groups of parents from South Delta Secondary and Delta Secondary, who began planning and fundraising for, what they hoped, would be a celebration – any kind of celebration in June. I remember being contacted by reps from both Dry Grad parent committees in January and February about plans and the possibility of the Optimist helping to get the word out. So we wrote stories on their plans, their fundraising efforts and the support needed from the business community and other resident volunteers. The support was amazing. This community stepped up and came through – big time. When news came from health officials and political leaders that the province was moving into Step 2 and could allow for somewhat larger group gatherings, both parent committees went into overdrive and planning was at a fever pitch. Talking to Jen Wilson from DSS and Karen Matthews from SDSS for our Dry Grad story, I was in awe as they both related all the work that went into these special six nights in South Delta to honour and celebrate this year’s Grad Class. Karen described it as a ‘Herculean effort’ the past few weeks, and I don’t doubt that one bit. To everyone involved, from the parents to the volunteers, restaurants, transportation, City of Delta, Delta Police and Delta Fire Department, you should all take a bow, pat yourself on the back and be ever so thankful in your collective efforts. During a historic time, you helped pull off historic events and a Dry Grad to remember for years to come.

Last week’s heat dome revealed our vulnerabilities

I

’ve visited the tropics and felt the heat of Africa, but have never experienced anything like the heat dome that settled over South Delta for four long, sweltering days. Humans have a great ability to forget, but I keep playing over in my mind the stillness of the days. No wind, no ocean breeze, a pale blue sky with a pollution haze in the distance. The heat dome felt apocalyptic. Our busy road saw little traffic, no walkers or cyclists everyone was indoors. It was eerie and disturbing, and even the birds stayed quiet. That hush was pocketed with the sounds of sirens, as emergency vehicles answered no call too small. Or did they? That is the question coming to light now that the dome has been lifted. All of our emergency services were overwhelmed, especially paramedics, and it now appears, unprepared. The BC coroner says the suspected sudden death toll in the lower mainland is 500 due to the heat. That is astonishing. Delta police reported 9 sud-

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

den deaths in 24 hours on the final day of the heat dome. Compare that to the average 5 calls a month they respond to under normal circumstances. The BC Emergency Health Services has a $560 million budget yet they did not put on extra staff or dispatchers until after the heat wave was over. Many ill people where left to fend for themselves. Clearly there are problems within the BCEHS that must be resolved by government and the unions. I am sympathetic. Historically paramedics are notoriously underpaid and overworked. The opioid and COVID-19 pandemics

have meant paramedics are stretched far too thin. Paramedics saved my step son’s life after a snow boarding accident. I have nothing but admiration for anyone who enters this high stress career. While I had some very uncomfortable days and nights during the heat wave, I was not alone without access to emergency services. I can’t imagine the anxiety for those who called and no one came. I take it for granted that when I need help, an ambulance will arrive in a timely manner, and I want to continue to feel that peace of mind, no matter what the cost. Extreme heat, forest fires, flooding, we have it all in B.C. and it behoves us to take action. The June heat dome was a wake-up call to prepare yourselves, and your homes, for more weather events because climate change is here to stay. Ingrid Abbott is a freelance broadcaster and reporter who will be better prepared for the next heat wave with a kiddie pool and bottomless margaritas.

Letters Lack of accessible parking

Editor: I am very upset at the choice by the City of Delta for its street choice in Ladner for its summer fun program. I’m concerned about the lack of handicapped parking in the area, now that all the curb parking is not accessible because the street is now blocked off to traffic. Those of us with mobility issues will have difficulty getting to our physio appointments. Many clients get dropped off at the door and this is no longer possible. Is there a possible solution to this quandary? C.M. Harlington

I’ll believe it when I see it

Editor: RE: LBA planting honours Dr. Bonnie Henry, pollinators, and local business (Optimist, June 24) Out planting a West Coast Seeds pollinator blend, the mayor stated that being out in the community is one of his favorite things and that, “Delta is interested in doing everything possible in [addressing] climate change and bee pollination.” I have been advocating for more selective mowing in some areas (such as along uninhabited stretches of River Road) for a while with seemingly no success. Last year, I was assured by the City that mowing would be more selective but again, flowering grassy meadows were mowed down, leaving small mammals (which our raptors fed on) homeless and robbing insect life (which other birds eat) of food and nesting grounds. What’s left behind for the rest of the summer is yellow stubble instead of thriving biotopes. I will believe Delta’s commitment to the environment when I see it, Mr. Mayor. Viviane McConkey

Delta Parks doing a great job

Editor: I am very impressed with all the work that Delta Parks is doing in Ladner! The gardens and now the “instant parks” at both Ladner dock and Bridge and Delta streets. I went for a walk on the trail beside the Delta Harbour’s dog off leash area and found a cooler full of iced water bottles and several more on a picnic table. From the Parks Board? More Ladner joy in my third year as a very happy villager! Rob Leeson

Myopic views

Editor: I refer to the letter sent in from A. Cameron concerning the opening of the border at Point Roberts (Optimist, letters, July 1). Wow, it is so wrong on so many levels it doesn’t justify a response. I can only hope that the myopic views of A. Cameron are not shared by the majority. Keith Dickinson

History is ours to preserve

Editor: I enjoyed reading “Delta throwback: A Cold War residential community” by Sandor Gyarmati (June 2, 2021). The important heritage site in Delta has been preserved as the North 40 Park Reserve for the enjoyment of visitors. It is also great to acknowledge the role of the top-secret Vancouver Wireless Station used to monitor soviet radio signals during the cold war. This is often overlooked in displays of the Boundary Bay Airport history. However, unlike the residential community, where all the buildings were removed, the Vancouver Wireless Station building remains standing in the middle of the Boundary Bay Airfield. A couple of years ago, we were privileged to have one of the inter-

cept operators, Bill Rogers, talk about his work in the monitoring station and life in the residential community during a meeting of Delta Amateur Radio Society. The talk is now preserved as an Oral History (https://ethw. org/Oral-History:Bill_ Rogers) by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) History Site. There has been a proposal to demolish the old Vancouver Wireless Station building, although it has been saved mainly due to the high cost of demolition and asbestos removal. It would be tragic to see another important historic building lost, and it reminds me of the story of Bletchley Park, which was the top-secret home of Second World War code breakers. This, too, was slated to be demolished to make way for a superstore but has now been preserved as a heritage attraction and museum. Let us not lose another historic building to progress.

Tunnel lighting a big difference

Editor: I am writing to say what a difference a little lighting did to brighten up the tunnel. People have been asking for this for well over a decade. Not sure why the Liberals who were in power for 12 years refused to do this. This is a step in right direction. The tunnel appears safer now that it is lit up and not as dark and drab. B. Aaron

More questions

Editor: Amongst all the hand wringing over this sad and tragic situation, the question that doesn’t seem to be getting asked is why the school administrators buried these children in unmarked graves. I can’t believe there would have been no records of these children’s names. Will someone please ask that specific question? John Ketteringham

MLAs Report

Brighter days are ahead for South Delta residents

MLA’s Report IAN PATON

This has been a challenging year for all of us. We’ve all missed family members and reduced our activities as we’ve tried to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Luckily, thanks to the hard work of all British Columbians to get vaccinated and keep case numbers low, B.C. is slowly starting to reopen — with a further easing of restrictions announced this week. This is a celebratory time for all of us after this incredibly difficult year. Businesses have suffered tremendously during the pandemic. I know they’re grateful to everyone who supported

them as they pivoted their operations or were forced to limit them during periods of restriction. As they begin to open back up, I hope you will continue to support these great local establishments. Everyone knows Delta is home to several fantastic craft breweries. Whether you want to make your way to Barnside Brewing Company to savour a farm fresh beer, stop by Four Winds Brewing Company’s tasting room to enjoy their awardwinning IPA or Pilsner, or sample Britannia Brewing Company’s selection of delicious food and drinks at their new location in the heart of Ladner Village, there are plenty of opportunities to stay local and resume social interactions with one another. Of course, there are so many wonderful farms to support too — and as a farmer myself, I’m very proud of the hard work our farmers put in so we can all consume fresh, locally-grown products. Take Emma Lea Farms, for example. In addition to being famous

for their incredible berries, The Stand offers other items including produce, natural beef, honey, housewares, clothing, and flowers. One can never leave without visiting their Ice Cream Shoppe and enjoying the sunshine at one of their picnic tables. While visiting Westham Island, be sure to spend some time at Cropthorne Farm and the Westham Island Herb Farm. Their offerings of a wide range of high-quality organic goods, herbs, fresh fruit and veggies, and seedlings give the phrase ‘farm to table’ new meaning. Let’s also take every opportunity we can to explore the great outdoors. Whether your favourite spot is Centennial Beach, Boundary Bay, Deas Island Park or Brunswick Point, I urge you to continue visiting these natural treasures close to home. I look forward to seeing more of you in person in the coming months as current restrictions are lifted, and we slowly return to life as usual.

July 8, 2021 The Delta Optimist A11 “The birds that are in the nests are just looking for an escape,” she says. And whether that’s an escape from the unruly heat beating down on them or from the increased number of flies attacking them, a fall from that height can lead to broken legs or wings. “Some of them have come in with maggots around their necks or around their eyes and face. And other ones seem to just jump out of the nest from the heat exhaustion and are

found panting on the ground.”

As you can imagine, the amount of food that we are going through right now is quite astronomical MARTINA VERSTEEG

Some of the week’s admissions were also found near water sources, seemingly in search

of some reprieve. But taking care of this increased number of birds is no easy task, and Versteeg would like to thank all the OWL volunteers who work so tirelessly, as well as the community members who find these birds and call them for help. “As you can imagine, the amount of food that we’re going through right now is quite astronomical,” says Versteeg. If you’re wanting to help, the organization is looking for fish donations – salmon or trout,

fresh or frozen – as well as monetary donations. OWL is also looking for more volunteers to help transport birds to their centre from different locations throughout the province. If you’re interested, email info@owlrehab.ca. And to help your local wildlife, Versteeg recommends putting out some shallow water in a container for them to either drink from or cool off in. For more information on what you can do to help, check out OWL’s website at.owlrehab.org.

ORPHANED WILDLIFE REHABILITATION SOCIETY

Last week’s heat wave has kept staff and volunteers busy at the Ladner-based Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Heatwaveledto recordnumbers forOWLSociety Orphaned wildlife centre has taken in around 100 raptors DANI PENALOZA

Contribuitng writer

Delta’s Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society is only just beginning to emerge from the flurry of bird admissions they faced last week. As temperatures records in B.C. were being broken, OWL was shattering their own personal records for the number of birds admitted in one day. Over the course of the week, the non-profit society took in around 100 birds needing care, estimates Martina Versteeg, a raptor care supervisor at OWL.

“For our centre, we never have a capacity because we can never turn away a raptor in need. And we make it work and give them all the best care we possibly can with the amount we have,” she says. While OWL does expect an influx of rescues for this time of year with young birds falling from their nests, this number is definitely out of the normal range, says Versteeg. And though the exact reason behind every incident can not always be fully known, she theorizes that these young birds were actually jumping from their nests.

Lacrosse fans can watch the Delta Junior “A” Islanders host Victoria on Sunday 3 p.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

The City of Delta has welcomed spectators back into its civic facilities to watch indoor sports, albeit in a limited capacity. As Step 3 of the B.C. Restart Plan went into effect on July 1, the province is now allowing such things as indoor fitness classes and some spectators at indoor sporting

events. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry last week said that venue capacity limits have been increased to either 50 people or 50 per cent of the venue’s capacity. That means that if a venue can hold 60 people, the limit would be 50 people. If that venue could host 500 people, the new capacity limit would be 250. Delta City Manager Sean McGill said staff

had a meeting last Friday morning to evaluate where the city was at as the new provincial orders came into place. “Once the provincial health orders came out it took us a few days to define the definition of those, so we worked with the B.C. Parks and Recreation Association as well to get some feedback. So, starting tonight we will have spectators in our sites,” he said. “We are looking at 50 per cent capacity. Masks are still mandatory and that is something that we are evaluating.” McGill said that staff will be providing a report to council at its July 12

meeting with further recommendations around masks and other health and safety protocols. He asks that residents attending any Delta facilities to continue to follow the posted safety information and any other guidance from staff. “We want to get spectators in and be able to watch their kids. We know that is important and getting back to some form of normalcy again,” he said. “We are continually evaluating and we want to make sure council is involved, users are involved and we want to take our time and make sure we do all of this right.”

Delta Police have confirmed that a Surrey woman reported missing on June 14, has been found deceased. In a press release, DPD confirmed that Wenyan Lan was located on Tuesday, June 29 in the area of Boundary Bay. DPD say her family has now been notified. Police do not suspect foul play. “Our sympathies are with Ms. Lan’s family and loved ones, and we hope this news can help bring them some closure,” said DPD spokesperson Cris Leykauf. Lan had embarked on a crabbing/clam digging excursion on June 14 in the Centennial Beach

area. When she did not return, her family notified Surrey RCMP who began a search of the area. DPD joined in that search when her vehicle was found in the parking lot that evening. An extensive search followed the next day, as DPD assumed conduct of the investigation, with ground and air searches by DPD drones, officers canvassing the area and the Coast Guard Hovercraft patrolling the waters of Boundary Bay. The RCMP Air 1 helicopter was also deployed several days later in subsequent searches of the area after hip waders from Lan were found along a trail in Boundary Bay.

Residents raise Admiral Way parking concerns SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta- optimist .com

Delta council recently approved a development variance permit for a construction project at Captain’s Cove Marina, but area residents have been writing to the city concerned about its impacts. The variance is for a housing project at 5311 Admiral Way to reduce the minimum east and west setbacks in order to permit projecting exterior stairs. The 125-unit townhouse project is the final development site within Hampton Cove in the Marina Garden Estates neighbourhood, a master planned community in Ladner. A report to council notes several residents have contacted staff with questions and concerns, however, the comments received were unrelated to the proposed variance for proposed exterior stairs. Those concerns included density and street parking, particularly on Admiral Boulevard. “Parking on Admiral Way is currently congested with vehicles from Hampton Cove. Owners use their garage for storage and the parking aprons are not long enough to park their vehicles. If owners at 5311 also park on Admiral Way instead of in their complex, congestion will increase making it dangerous for traffic (be it cars, bikes, buses or emergency vehicles) and pedestrian navigation,” one letter writer noted. The resident requested the city consider requiring the developer to have enlarged parking aprons so that owners can park their vehicles on their aprons rather than on Admiral Way. Another area resident wrote, “The traffic and parking are problematic now. There is a saturation point and we are very close to it.”

The report to council notes that the proposal is consistent with the allowable density, which was approved through zoning in 2015 and supported by a traffic impact analysis. “All required parking is proposed to be provided on-site. The Engineering Department has recently undertaken consultation related to boat trailer parking on the street and is working to resolve street parking concerns with the neighbourhood,” the report adds. Approved several years ago, the application by Captain’s Cove Marina and Polygon Homes for the final phase of development will see a total of 674 new housing units (94 condos and 580 townhouse units) in the Ladner subdivision. It also includes 16,146-square-feet of neighbourhood commercial space and parking for the marina, a linear waterfront park, construction of a new clubhouse and maintenance building on the Links at Hampton Cove golf course. A building permit for the commercial development has been issued and is anticipated to be completed within 18 months, according to planning staff. The north portion of the property at 5311 Admiral Way is being used for interim marina parking and would not be developed until the parking is relocated to the commercial site at 5519 Admiral Way. The development now taking place is a big change from an original master plan. Located off Ferry Road on the banks of the Fraser River, the first phases of Marina Gardens were completed more than two decades ago. Over the years, several residential phases and the golf course were added. The 87-hectare (217acre) site had originally been approved for 1,426

The comments and concerns included impacts from the new townhouse units to street parking and neighbourhood traffic.

homes as well as a golf course, a 220-room hotel, a marina, a neighbourhood pub and limited commercial uses. When the revised plan was given the green light, 619 houses had already been constructed, fewer than what was originally planned. The revised master plan for the final buildout also included dropping the hotel altogether. When approved, the

revised master plan was a controversial one with many residents expressing opposition, saying the development would be too dense for the area. While the new final phase exceeded the maximum permitted units for the remaining undeveloped portion by 65, it will result in 133 fewer housing units overall than what had been originally approved for the entire development.

Point Roberts border crossing closure protest draws hundreds IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It was an afternoon of unity with a strong message. Last Sunday, a protest was held on the Canada/ US Boundary Bay border as residents and business owners from Point Roberts joined residents from Canada. Dubbed “Hands Across the Border,” the protest was an effort to influence state, provincial and federal politicians to get the border open again. The border will remain closed until at least July 21, which is the latest extension in a yearlong closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Optimist photographer Jim Kinnear was on hand. He said those that he spoke with simply lamented on not being able to get to their cabins. “Some were guessing when the border would reopen,” he said. “Any Americans I talked to were simply anxious to get the border open, so they can come and go at will and to get their economy going again. All in all, it was a very sociable gathering.” Faced with a growing business crisis, Point Roberts business owners have been ramping up the pressure the past few weeks, calling on governments in both countries

On Sunday afternoon, a protest was held on the Canada/US Boundary Bay border as residents and business owners from Point Roberts joined residents from Canada. to reopen the border for the livelihood of Point Roberts’ future. Last week, Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee announced $100,000 in funding from the state strategic fund would go to Point Roberts to ensure there was food security for the community. This came following the announcement two weeks ago from International Marketplace owner Ali Hayton, who said if she didn’t receive help or if the border didn’t open soon, she would be forced to close the store for good on July 15. “I strongly support the reopening of the U.S.-Canada border to

support our border communities in Washington and British Columbia,” said Inslee in his funding announcement. “The Point Roberts community has been isolated due to the closure throughout the pandemic, and while all Washington communities have been impacted, the situation up there is unique. This action is a small bridge to support the entire community and retain a critical employer. I urge the U.S. and Canadian governments to take rapid and meaningful steps to reopen travel across the U.S.-Canada land border, consistent with public health guidelines.” Hayton said the funds will allow

the International Marketplace to remain in business and serve the community. “Although I am extremely discouraged that we haven’t made any progress on the border re-opening, I was so grateful and relieved to hear from Governor Inslee. These funds will allow us to continue serving our community,” said Hayton. “We have been so encouraged by his outreach, especially these last few weeks, and while we know he has no control over the border, we are hopeful that his continued advocacy will spur some change in Washington, D.C. “As a business owner, I have never wanted a hand-out; I just want my customers back. And while these funds help stop the hemorrhaging at my business, the entire business community as well as every resident of Point Roberts needs to see an exemption at Boundary Bay so that we can ‘re-open’ along with the rest of Washington state.” Inslee is planning a visit to Point Roberts on Friday (July 9) to engage with stakeholders and discuss issues impacting the community.

DeltaChoralwelcomesnewartisticdirector Esteemed artist & educator Cathrie Yuen moving to the society’s helm starting this month DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Though it has been a while since our ears have been gifted with a Delta Choral Society concert, they are pleased to announce a new artistic director will be starting this summer. The esteemed artist and educator Cathrie Yuen joined the society this month, bringing with her a lifelong passion for music, singing and conducting. “I’m super excited! It’s a community choir that is very committed to singing, they’re very passionate about making music, and what I love about this choir is that they have different age groups,” says Yuen. The experienced conductor says one of the greatest parts of working with singers of all ages is how much she gets to learn from them, herself. Whether that’s the latest trends buzzing on social media or a lifetime’s experience of singing in a choir, Yuen says she loves it all and can hardly wait to work with the different choirs.

Delta Choral Society’s public relations and advertising manager Julie Lymburner says Yuen’s enthusiasm and passion shone through during the virtual meet and greet that was held. “Every choral conductor has a different kind of style, a different way, and she’s assured us that she wants to maintain a real eclectic repertoire of music – just because her background has been quite classical. She still fully intends to work on a full range of repertoire,” says Lymburner. When it is safe to do so, Yuen hopes to travel with the choirs to meet other groups. Over the course of the pandemic, the Delta Choral Society has remained connected through newsletters, different fundraising efforts, virtual social gatherings and workshops. Hopefully, come fall, they will be able to rehearse in person again, alongside Yuen. “We’re all at the mercy of the public health orders and proceeding safely. Right now, the focus has been on getting

Hidden Daughter, Secret Sister: A Story of Adoption gives readers a glimpse into Kim Mooney’s emotional story

As Kim Mooney wrote her memoir, she wanted fellow adoptees to know they are not alone in their potential feelings of confusion, shame and heartache. In her new book Hidden Daughter, Secret Sister: A Story of Adoption, the Tsawwassen resident tells the story of searching for her birth mother and the secrets that she learned along the way. “I had always had a yearning to know more about my birth family and … when I was in my early 30s, I was a young mom, and I decided it was time to dig into that and see what I could find,” says Mooney. Mooney hopes that her

story will validate other people’s feelings who have been through similar experiences. She also hopes it will give insight to non-adoptees about what that emotional journey can look like for somebody. After reading her book, she hopes that, “for people who haven’t been touched by the world of adoption, if and when they do meet people [who have been adopted], that they don’t make assumptions, and that if they have questions, they ask them gently.” Hidden Daughter, Secret Sister: A Story of Adoption is intended to shed some light on, what can sometimes be, a taboo topic. “I don’t want this to come across as a ‘poor me’ – that’s not the case. It’s just to, kind of, open a door into a topic

that isn’t readily discussed. We don’t talk a lot about adoption,” she says. She originally started the book while on a writing retreat, where she discovered that, indeed, she could write. Before dedicating herself completely to her writing, she taught at Royal Roads University and ran a consulting practice in organizational development. When she isn’t writing, Mooney can be found playing the harp “not well but with enthusiasm”, getting lost in a good book, or relaxing with her husband at their place on Galiano Island. Her memoir can be purchased at Black Bond Books in Ladner, at Albany Books in Tsawwassen, and through Amazon.

In the 4th chapter of the Gospel According to Mark, we read about a perilous journey taken by Jesus and his disciples across the Sea of Galilee. At the height of a storm that threatens to sink the boat, the disciples were astounded to find Jesus sleeping. In desperation, they asked: “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Though some may not like to admit it, it’s a question many of us have or will ask God at some point. We will all move through our share of storms, collectively and individually. During those times, the sense of certainty and assurance through which we will normally move through life will suddenly disappear. Then we will ask. Has God fallen asleep? Doesn’t God care? Those are the kinds of questions that filled the heart and mind of Job, a biblical character who

No, God may not be doing the things we believe God should be doing and how God should be doing them. The disciples didn’t think Jesus should be sleeping, and had lost faith in him. But he delivered them. The Bible teaches that God will deliver what God has promised. Through Jesus Christ, God has made a promise to you—the promise that your sins are forgiven and that will be given eternal life. It is not a promise that your life will be free of suffering or pain. But it is a promise that God will deliver you safely to the other side.

Pat Irvine thought it would be the perfect birthday present for her Harley-loving husband, and the Langley chapter of Harley Owners Group (HOG) was more than happy to oblige. Scott Irvine is battling stage 4 esophageal cancer that has now spread

to his liver and lungs, and is under palliative care. The couple were avid Harley Davidson motorcycle riders and Pat knew it was a passion her husband dearly misses. It was back in May when she read an article in the Optimist about the HOGs making trip to Tsawwassen to pay tribute to Liam Hance’s

The Langley HOG chapter made a special birthday visit to Scott Irvine’s Ladner home.

11th birthday. Days earlier, he had tragically lost his father to COVID-19. Pat reached out to the chapter, hoping they could make a special visit to Ladner on June 26, the same day as a small birthday party and backyard barbecue was planned for for Scott. Though the sweltering heat put the party on hold for another day,

it didn’t stop the HOG members from providing quite the spectacle outside the Irvine’s home on Chestnut Crescent. “They rode down our street, did a complete loop around then parked their bikes,” said Pat “Each one of then came up to my husband and gave him their regards, as well as a fist bump. They all were just awesome.”

Lacrosse is at last back on Sunday

Senior and junior box lacrosse games with spectators are set to return this weekend to the Ladner Leisure Centre for the first time in nearly two years. The West Coast Senior Lacrosse League, B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League and B.C. Junior “B” Tier One Lacrosse League are launching shortened exhibition seasons. The schedules commence after COVID-19 provincial health restrictions were eased further on July 1, including spectators being allowed for indoor sports. The Islanders begin their eight-game BCJALL Summer Showcase schedule on Friday in Burnaby, then return home two days later to entertain the Victoria Shamrocks at 3 p.m. The Junior B Tier 1 Islanders will also play eight games, including a July 14 home opener against Port Coquitlam at 8 p.m. The Ladner Pioneers will enter their campaign with roughly 35 players on their roster and will feature a number of homegrown products that would typically be playing in the Western Lacrosse Association, including Logan Schuss, Jon Phillips, Evan Messenger and Eli McLaughlin. Ladner will play a series of games against a pair of teams from the North Shore before the two clubs pare down their line-ups for two more games. It starts next Tuesday at the LLC at 8 p.m.

Delta 2003 Heat girls fastpitch team got together for a special photo shoot last month that included all the players in their grad dresses. The team is looking forward to the month ahead of game action now, that COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted.

From Crescent Stables in Ladner to Softball City in South Surrey - what a wild ride 2021 has been so far for the 2003 Delta Heat, and fortunately, they are far from done. The U19 girls rep fastpitch team is, at last back, on the diamond, thanks to loosened health restrictions that will result in provincial championships taking place next month in Richmond. This comes after the COVID19 pandemic essentially wiped out the entire 2020 season and about three months of the 2021 campaign, long enough - for Softball Canada to cancel the U19 nationals that were slated for early August in Montreal. “We have kind of had a raw deal the last couple of years. A lot has been taken away from them,” said Heat head coach Chris Roper who guided his team to a second place finish at last weekend’s Canadian Pride and Power Tournament at Softball City. “If we can have a good run, finish strong at provincials in Richmond, then the girls can head off to school on a good note.” The Heat are loaded with players that will be continuing their careers at the university or collegiate level on both sides of the border this fall. Even though few games have been played since 2019, the team made plenty of noise that summer to get the attention of scouts. It was highlighted by capturing the prestigious U16 Showcase Gold title at the Canada

Cup that year, defeating Chinese-Taipei in the title game. The girls ran out of steam by the time they hit nationals a couple of weeks later in Calgary. That’s why they were very much looking forward to making the trip back east for this year’s Canadian Championships. “When we went to nationals in 2019, we ended up seventh which left a bit of a sour taste in our mouths as we were a top

team. The whole thing was about going to Montreal this year and it was gone,” continued Roper. The team would usually book gym time through the Delta School District for January workouts but that option wasn’t available due to COVID. Instead, Crescent Stables in East Ladner offered its indoor riding arena for training. “Crescent Stables was gracious enough to give us access so we ended up in a horse barn,” chuckled Roper. “The kids had to deal with about a 12-foot high pile of horse manure each time but that’s how badly they wanted it.” Roper and his assistant coaches are hoping this season isn’t the girls’ final chapter. The team is eligible to return for a final year at U19 or could just continue on at the senior women’s level in 2022. “As coaches, that’s what we are hopeful for is that everybody wants to come back,” he added. “If it’s making a run at (2022) nationals Fredericton at the minor level or going for it at senior and having some fun. Just keep playing. That’s what we want to do. “We thought we had a legit shot at winning nationals this year. Losing that opportunity, making a run at Fredericton next year would make a lot of sense to do that.” The Heat’s roster includes: Shae Sever, Paige Scott, Camryn Milley, Ashley Epp, Jordan Roper, Olivia Chandra, Hailey Reid, Chloe Maher, Kaitlyn Eng, Jasmine Polazjar, Lauren Rawson, Joanna Inkster and Bianca Tomlinson.

DOYLE, Sharon A. December 5, 1968 − June 21, 2021 On June 21, 2021, Sharon Angela Doyle passed into the hands of God, peacefully, at home in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, with her beloved family by her side. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and her spirit will live in heaven and in the hearts of those who loved her. Sharon was born in Vancouver on December 5, 1968, and raised in the heart of Kitsilano with her brother, Robert. Her education started in 1981 at Little Flower Academy in Shaughnessy where she met her best friend Renee Foran. A life−long learner, Sharon completed her undergraduate degree in history and a diploma in Teacher Librarianship, before obtaining her Library and Information Studies Masters in 2008. Her first job was as an English teacher in Japan in 1993. She taught for 28 years, mostly in the BC public school system, and she will be remembered by the thousands of students she helped. Her qualifications paid off when she landed her dream job as Teacher Librarian at South Delta Secondary in 2006. Sharon had a remarkable ability to learn the names and recognize the faces of hundreds of students at the school, and so endeared herself. Wearing her Fluevog boots, Sharon modernized the school library into the digital age and made it a popular refuge, bringing all her information technology skills to bear. Her transformative work will continue to benefit South Delta students for years to come. Sharon met James Hipwell in 2000 at the Commodore Ballroom. They moved to Tsawwassen in 2001, married in 2003, and enjoyed vacations with friends and family in Maui, Whistler, and Tofino. Sharon enjoyed travelling, and before starting her family she had travelled to Europe, the Middle East, and across Africa on safari with her best friend Renee. Her beloved son, Finn Hipwell was born in 2005, and the two of them went to school together. She is survived by her husband, James; and son, Finn Hipwell; her parents, Brian and Angela Doyle; and her brother, Robert Doyle; his wife, Nicole; and their sons, Caiden and Max. Sharon’s earthly remains will be interned at Boundary Bay Cemetery on July 19, 2021, at 10 AM with a reception to follow at Cammidge house. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the BC Cancer Foundation.

Pat passed away peacefully on June 18, 2021 at the age of 74 at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, BC. She was a loving wife to Bernie for 53 years and a wonderful mother to Laura and Jane. She will be missed by them, by her sister Bonnie Farrell and her family and by other family members and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Bruce and Judy Sharp. One of Pat’s favorite pastimes was spending time in the local casinos. She also loved travelling to Las Vegas with Bernie and Laura, where they created many fond memories. There will be a private graveside service at Boundary Bay Cemetery on Saturday, July 10, 2021. It will be by invitation only due to current restrictions. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice for their care. Donations to the Hospice or the BC Cancer Foundation would be appreciated by the family, in lieu of flowers. Family holidays and Christmas were her favourite times of the year, and she went all out to make them memorable for the entire family. Karen’s love of her garden and little animal friends was clearly evident to anyone whoever came to visit her. Simply the best Mother anyone could ask for, she will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the B.C. cancer society.

ROBERTSON, William James “Jim” April 17, 1933 - June 20, 2021

TKACHUK, Bob June 2, 2021 It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bob, surrounded by his family, at the Irene Thomas Hospice at the age of 73. Bob was a member of the RCMP and over his 30 years of service, he spent his time in various postings in Saskatchewan and the Lower Mainland. Bob married his high−school sweetheart, Anne− Marie and moved to BC, where he and Anne raised their two children, Jamie and Ryan. In his earlier years, Bob enjoyed nothing more than barbecuing for friends and family, and many a great time were had out in the "greenhouse" at their home in Tsawwassen. He also enjoyed coaching and supporting his children in their various sports endeavours over the years. Bob is survived by, and will be deeply missed, by his wife of 51 years, Anne; his daughter, Jamie; and son−in−law, Sean (Sadler); his son, Ryan; and daughter−in−law, Krista; his sister, Joan; and brother−in−law, John; and many more family and dear friends. Bob was an amazing "Bopa" to his three grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Colton, and Josh. We wish to extend our thanks to the caring staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice and Dr. Paul Klimo for his excellent care of Bob over the past five years.

Born to one of the original pioneering families of Westham Island, Jim was always a hard-working, good ol’ country boy at heart. Even after the cows were long gone, Jim still rose in time for milking. While for 38 years he was the “Corporations” grader operator - that was only one of his many professions. He rarely missed a 24-hour river opening (in the Thunderbird, a boat he built himself in his driveway); and evenings and weekends were spent down on the farm he grew up on. After the crops had been harvested and daylight hours shortened, not one to sit idle, Jim spent his evening’s muskrat trapping. He always looked forward to the opening day of duck hunting and a trip up north to go moose hunting. Even after retirement, the farm having been sold and the Prairie Drift long closed - the freedom of the great outdoors still called - and Jim took on his last occupation, that of log salvager and firewood purveyor. The essence of Ladner as a farming and fishing community ran deep in Jim’s blood. Jim’s free once again to enjoy the tules, punt the mudflats, and cruise the river looking for that next treasure. Jim leaves to remember him, his children Sherry (Doug), Christine (Clark), and Jamie (Michelle), grandchildren Christopher, Sarah, Courtney (Stan), Carolyn, and Mariah, and the brightness of his days - great-grandson Charlie James. Sadly he left before welcoming his second great-grandchild, Tucker Davidson, who was born June 29. Predeceased by his wife Ann in 2010, his son-in-law Clark and all 6 of his siblings. Rest and enjoy Dad. Delta Funeral Home 604.946.6040
