Conservative leader holds rally in Delta Erin O’Toole holds Saturday event at Ladner’s Harris Barn IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

“It’s time for change.” Conservative leader Erin O’Toole used that rallying cry among others as he tried to bolster the fortunes of Conservative candidates and supporters during a campaign rally stop at Harris Barn in Ladner Saturday night. O’Toole and his family were greeted to a raucous ovation from the 100-plus supporters who came out for the event when he entered. He then spoke for about 15 minutes outlining the Conservative platform as well as offering support for Delta candidate Garry Shearer. He then posed for pictures and spoke with supporters individually. “I want to start by thanking our candidate Garry Shearer for organizing this event. You and I first met when I was reaching out to business leaders, chambers of commerce across B.C. I spoke with 30 virtually and one in person. Garry understands the needs of small business, the needs of entrepreneurs,” said O’Toole. “He will be a great Member of

Parliament because he will help get Delta and B.C. back to work after COVID-19. A strong British Columbia is vital to a strong Canada coming out of a tough year for our country. I’m looking forward to working with our B.C. team to get our country back on track and secure our future.” O’Toole also spoke of his career in the military and how those 12 years serving this country has put him in a great position to lead this country. He also reiterated his support for the Massey Tunnel replacement, which he committed to funding if elected last week. “This election for Canadians at those crossroads is about who can get this country back on its feet and rebuild our economy,” he said. “This election is about who you think can secure the future for all Canadians coming out of the most difficult year in our lifetimes.” Before O’Toole arrived, Shearer spoke with the Optimist for a few minutes. He said he was thrilled to have O’Toole in the riding.

Federal Conservative Party leader Erin O`Toole was in Ladner last Saturday night for a campaign rally with candidates and supporters. “This is amazing that we have him very early in the campaign,” said Shearer. “Right across the country he is bringing up the energy of all of our ridings and I’m so happy to have him here tonight.”

Shearer said six days into the campaign “things are going great.” “We have been knocking on a lot of doors and talking to a lot of people. We are getting a lot of encouragement about

our platform and our recovery plan. We are the only party that has come out with a detailed plan and people are starting to recognize that, saying we have to start taking you guys seriously,” he said.

“You seem to be very organized and ready to take on the challenges of this country.” See more election coverage on pages 3-5 and online at www. delta-optimist.com.

Community activist Monika Dean to run for federal NDP IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s ”d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Long-time North Delta community activist Monika Dean has been announced as the NDP candidate for the riding. Dean said her decision to seek the federal seat has a lot to do with her dad. “My dad is 86 and he’s always inspired me to do the right thing – he’s where I get my caring from,” said Dean. “When I asked him what he would do if I ran, he said he would be so proud. He’s the reason I’m doing this.” Dean, 32, grew up in a blended and mixed-race family with five siblings. Her dad is a retired United Church minister and her Philippines-born mom is a retired registered nurse. She learned early on the importance of social justice and caring about other people. She also learned the importance of protecting

the natural environment, which led her to pursue a career in environmental science. “I feel strongly about protecting our ecology and understanding the impact that we as humans have on our environment,” she said. An arborist by profession, Dean works for the City of Surrey and has also held various volunteer roles with her union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 402. While she was content for a number of years to advance social justice issues away from the political spotlight, that changed in 2016 when she experienced a violent crime. After being victimized, Dean was forced onto a roadside, in distress. Rather than assist Dean, a passerby crossed the street to avoid her and kept going. “It was a bit of an epiphany,” Dean said. “I thought that if this could happen to me, it could

happen to anybody. There are people who are so much more vulnerable than me – disenfranchised people who don’t have a voice, seniors, people struggling with mental health and homelessness – there is no way I can turn my back on them.” Being mixed race with a Filipino mother, Dean has also experienced racial inequality. She sees her values reflected in the federal NDP platform and lauds the work of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh to bring attention to issues that are important to everyday Canadians, like being able to pay for prescription medication, find employment that supports a family and access affordable childcare. “Jagmeet Singh instills so much confidence and hope in me, and for the future of Canadians,” said Dean. “He understands the importance of balancing the economy with the well-being of

Canadians and the need to protect the natural environment. He isn’t

working for the ultrarich, he’s working for regular people.”

Canada Votes 2021 North Delta’s Smith runs for Green Party IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A longstanding North Deltan with a passion for the environment is running for the Green Party in the federal election. Entering politics for the first time, Jeremy Smith has lived in various parts of Ontario and in Edmonton, but settled in B.C. when he met his wife Meghan 25 years ago. They chose to live in North Delta because it offered cultural diversity and a safe and friendly place to raise their family. During the past two decades he has worked in the waste recovery business where he was part of a team that brought oil container recycling and antifreeze recycling to the province. He told the Optimist he chose to run to get some answers to pressing issues. “I wanted to find out why, in the waste industry, every time a new

party gets in they completely change policies regarding environmental practices and how they reinforce environmental policies. It used to be a time where, whatever was set, whoever came into office would stick to that,” he said. “It terms of business you could rely on government to support you if you are trying to do something for the environment. I wanted to find out why it is so broken and I want to bring change. When you ask for an opinion you should want to hear that opinion, but in politics

these days, decisions are already made before they hear those opinions. That’s a horrible way to conduct business.” Smith said he would like to see more transparency in big projects, like the Tilbury LNG in Delta and wants more environmental protection for the Fraser River. “There seems to be nothing said about marine pollution and marine vessels,” he said. “I would also like to bring some stability to businesses who are wanting to do the right thing and provide a solution to local problems instead of consistently saying not in my backyard, let’s ship it off to someone else’s backyard. “I value the fact that someone needs to push to find middle ground, but the reason I applied for the Green Party is I thought I could bring a more realistic approach instead of an extreme approach.”

Small business owner and first time candidate Paul Tarasenko will be running for the People’s Party of Canada in Delta in the federal election. Born in Surrey in 1996, Tarasenko attended the French Immersion program at Burnsview Secondary in North Delta where he know lives. He then went on to graduate from Trinity Western University with distinction with his degree in general studies in the areas of education, history, and environmental science. all levels of government regardless of their party affiliation. There are ideas that I like about the PPC, so let’s bring them to the table, let’s discuss them and see if we can all make a better Canada.” Here is Delta he said he wants to fight for seniors and their living costs as well, he wants to encourage small businesses. “With the PPC where they want to lower the corporate tax rates, that would help encourage and grow small business in our community,” he said. “I would like to see more transparency within our politicians. There is a lot of secrecy and a lot of infighting. I’m seeing a lot of disconnect and not looking out for their constituents, but instead, looking out for themselves.”

McKnight named new Chamber executive director IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A familiar face in the Delta business community is changing roles. Jill McKnight, the current president of the Ladner Business Association (LBA) has been named executive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce. She assumes the role following the departure of Garry Shearer who is

the Conservative Party candidate for Delta in the upcoming federal election. McKnight will assume the role on Oct. 4. “I’m very excited. It is an incredible opportunity,” she said. “I really like the fact that it aligns with something I’m so passionate about in terms of helping businesses in Delta succeed.” McKnight is a longtime Delta resident, seasoned

business owner and community leader. “For the last five years as LBA president and on the board since 2012, that has opened up a tremendous opportunity to work alongside many businesses in this community,” she said. “One of the things I came to realize is that I really enjoy the work and coming through COVID and seeing the successes of businesses come through that

and be supportive during some challenging times, it was very gratifying for me to see others succeed. I kind of felt there was more that I wanted to do and be involved in a bigger way, so when I was approached with this opportunity, I really wanted to learn more about the position and see how I could impact more on a greater scale.” McKnight said she previously announced to the

Jill McKnight is the new executive director for the Delta Chamber of Commerce. She officially starts the position on Oct. 4. LBA that she would be stepping down this year. “This was something that was going to happen regardless and the AGM for the LBA is in November,” she said. “Obviously the timeline has been moved up. Our board will be meeting soon to decide what will happen until the AGM in November. In the meantime I will wrap things up and transition us through to the AGM.” McKnight said her involvement with the LBA has been a tremendous gift. “What I have learned, how I have grown and the relationships I have built…it is incredible,” she said. “It’s fortunate that I’m still in the community and those relationships remain because the people I have gotten to work with are the greatest gift.” As for her business – South Coast Casuals, she said she and her family will continue to own and operate it. “It means that some of the activities that I would do during the work day will be at nights or on the weekend,” she said. “This is possible because we

have an incredible team at South Coast Casuals.” Chamber board chair Rick Gibbs said he is thrilled to welcome McKnight to the team. “A fantastic person with a great resume in the community…she was exactly what we were looking for,” said Gibbs. “We really wanted someone that is part of the fabric of Delta and has a strong resume in the community. We have been talking with Jill and it wasn’t something we could announce yet publically, but the election came down fast, so we had a plan in place and then that changed. “As everything unfolded over the last week, she had time to let her employees know and timed that with our Chamber team. We have a number of initiatives in the works and Jill brings a great bridge to these initiatives. She has great ideas. The City of Delta is very pleased as well. It’s important we have a very collaborative spirit with all our organizations and community partners and Jill is the right person to continue to move us forward.”

Hundreds of new complaints filed against Delta organics facility Mayor asks Metro for compliance audit SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The City of Delta wants Metro Vancouver to ensure a controversial organic waste recycling facility in East Ladner is abiding by the rules. In a letter to regional district board chair Sav Dhaliwal, Mayor George Harvie requested a compliance audit of the GFL Environmental organics facility on 72nd Street, saying the purpose of the audit would be to ensure GFL is complying with the terms of the Composting Facility Licence issued under the Solid Waste and Recyclable Material Regulatory Bylaw. Despite upgrades including an enclosure of much of the facility, there were over 200 resident complaints

this June and July, said Harvie, noting the GFL facility was identified as the source of the odour. Harvie said the facility is licensed by Metro Vancouver to receive up to 150,000 tonnes per year of material and the suspected source of the odours is material that is being managed outside of the fullyenclosed system. “We would like to know whether the types and quantity of material being received by GFL complies with the terms of this license given the volume of material being stored outside of the buildings which we believe is contributing to the odours observed by our residents,” Harvie wrote. He also asked that Metro makes the issue a priority, saying “it is

critical to Delta residents, and the region, that the GFL facility is operated in a manner that does not negatively affect its neighbours.” Delta council earlier this year endorsed an application by the operation to amend its regional composting license so that it is consistent with the new fully-enclosed composting facility and associated processes. The amendment does not change the types or quantity of material allowed to be processed. The composting license does not authorize or regulate the emission of odourous air contaminants from the facility as that aspect of the operation is addressed within an air quality permit.

Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES

I

s Delta a battle ground in the upcoming federal election? If the first week of the campaign is any indication, it certainly is. Conservative candidate Garry Shearer welcomed leader Erin O’Toole to the riding last Saturday night – six days after the writ dropped. And with Lower Mainland stops in the Tri-Cities earlier in the week – and a visit for an announcement and a commitment on the opioid crisis in New Westminster Sunday morning following his Delta visit, it is clear to me that O’Toole is not only targeting Delta but several other seats in the Lower Mainland as well. O’Toole’s press secretary also told me Saturday night that O’Toole will very likely return to Delta later in this campaign. What figured to be, in my mind, a fairly routine and mundane campaign in Delta, is certainly off to a rousing start. There are five confirmed candidates – incumbent Carla Qualtrough for the Liberals, Shearer for the Conservatives, Monika Dean for the NDP, Jeremy Smith for the Greens and Paul Tarasenko for the People’s Party of Canada. Dean, Smith and Tarasenko are all new to politics and first-time candidates. It’s great to see new faces, young faces in Tarasenko and Dean and another female candidate on the ticket. More young people should be getting involved in politics and seeing this take place in Delta is fantastic. I’m looking forward to speaking and learning about all of our candidates in the coming weeks. We here at the Optimist will do our best to provide our readers, both in print and online, with as comprehensive election coverage as we can. I encourage everyone to check out our federal election section on our website under the local news tab, where you will also find companion stories from our newsrooms across the Lower Mainland, while our Canadian Press feed on the website will provide up-to-date national coverage. Do your part. Be informed and whoever you choose, be sure to exercise your right and vote in advance or on Sept. 20.

Lots of work on down the farm

A

s we approach the dog days of summer it is clear that the landscape is changing. Backyard gardens look a little different than they did a few weeks ago. Some vegetation loves the heat, lots not so much. I try to drink it in as much as possible when the seasons change. I am a huge fall fan as well, and love the cooler temperatures and vibrant colours as autumn approaches. For my part, it has been a challenge to keep school farms producing in the midst of a drought. No built in irrigation is obviously a factor when a couple of “heat domes” and way higher than normal temperatures have been the norm. The fall brings the promise of over wintering crops and bulbs and I look forward to getting those in the ground soon. If you live in Boundary Bay, or have had a chance to get to Centennial Beach, you have likely had the opportunity to visit or perhaps purchase the fresh organic produce from the Farm Roots Farm. This season the farm has been managed by farm manager

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

Jack Edgar who has done an outstanding job of producing some fantastic food. The farm is operating as a partnership between Vancouver based Fresh Roots and the Delta School District’s Farm Roots program. The other day I ran in to Kira Cowie, a mentor in the program who will be entering Grade 12 this year. She has been an active participant in the program for a few years and plans to return next year. Farmer Mike first met Kira when she was a Grade 5 student at Cliff Drive Elementary. Darry Penny, her teacher at the time, has been a keen supporter of Project Pickle and this year plans to engage all 13 divisions from his new home

at Gibson Elementary. Understanding aspects of food and farming is an important undertaking for many reasons not the least of which is to engage community. The Fresh Roots/Farm Roots partnership will be offering the public the chance to visit the farm, perhaps pull a weed or two, and take home some farm fresh produce Sept. 1 and Sept. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. both days. If you can’t bring your own bag there will be boxes available. This is a great opportunity to visit a productive and educationbased farm and talk shop with some knowledgeable people. In addition to these “weed and feed” events, the farm is also offering a “weekly harvest fresh sheet.” To sign up, email jack@freshroots.ca and you will receive a list of what is available. Simply check the items that you would like, send the form back and you can come to the farm to pick up your order on Thursdays. There are an abundance of beautiful vegetables on the menu at this super productive time of the year. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food.

HOUSING ACTION PLAN

More tree removal is disappointing Editor: I read the article about the proposed taller buildings and renewal in the Ladner village. I was very surprised that “Spot on the Water” was not mentioned as a

park? The recommendation is to remove the park with its green space and trees and add residential buildings. Where in the world do we recommend removing parks with trees and

a view of the harbour? Unbelievable! Delta residents- please take note and respond decisively to our government and let your views be known. Ellen Demmery

Showing pride in their work

Editor: It is heartwarming to see people who take pride in their work. Let me start with the volunteers and organizers of the Ladner Village Market – this is the best street-market around. Top billing also goes to the Delta employees who tend the flower beds and hanging baskets around Ladner, Tsawwassen, and North Delta. These are a joy to admire as we go through the changing seasons. And we must men-

tion the health workers and volunteers at Delta Hospital and all the Delta care homes. These folks go to work with professionalism and pride that is unequalled, as I discovered recently during an episode of chest pains – my care at the hospital was instant, thorough, and gracious. But I wonder what happened to the workers who spread the blacktop on our roads. Is it such a difficult task to make the manhole covers and access

And any blacktop patching jobs are a joke. Perhaps it’s time for our lovely Delta workers to wrest control of the paving away from the private contractors – we know they would take pride in their work. Curt Jantzen

COVID-19 facts about Point Roberts Editor: In response to Beth Walkers objection to Point Roberts’ residences accessing businesses and the area, (Optimist, letters), while I understand the concern, here are a few facts you might want to consider.

The last US census confirmed 1,150 full time people living in Point Roberts. The citizens of Point Roberts are now 85 per cent fully vaccinated. That leaves approximately 172 Point Roberts people un-vaccinated. The population of

Tsawwassen is 21,600, according to the data from Canadian government, so I would assume there are more unvaccinated people in the Tsawwassen area then the threat from Point Roberts. Dan Bourks

Fraser Health Authority and Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation are pleased to announce the arrival of the echocardiogram (also known as an Echo) and the opening of the new Echocardiography Service at Delta Hospital. The Echo was funded by the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation and is located in the new Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building. An Echo Ultrasound is a specialized, noninvasive ultrasound that produces images of the internal structures of the heart to assess cardiac function. This state of the art equipment will transform cardiac care in Delta as it plays a crucial role in faster, often lifesaving diagnoses of cardiac distress. By producing two dimensional and four dimensional images of the heart, an Echo allows doctors to make split-second decisions, greatly enhances their ability to diagnose acute and chronic heart problems like heart failure, heart inflammation and heart valve issues. Accessing the echocardiography service close to home is increasingly important as Delta’s population ages. Previously, all Delta Hospital inpatients and outpatients in the community needed to travel to other sites to have access to this

to the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “We are so proud to play a role in bringing this new service to Delta Hospital and we are incredibly appreciative to our donors for supporting the Echo Ultrasound campaign,” says Lisa Hoglund, Executive Director, Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “This brand-new service is operating in the Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building, ensuring our community has access to the latest and best technology possible. This would not be possible without the continued support of our community.”

MasseyTunnelreplacementdrawsmixedreaction SANDOR GYARMATI

sgy arma ti@de lta - o ptim ist .c o m

It’s a mixed bag when it comes to reaction to the provincial government’s announcement last week that the George Massey Tunnel will be replaced by another tunnel. The new eight-lane immersed-tunnel is to open in 2030 and have an estimated $4.15 billion price tag. Saying he’s disappoint-

ed the new crossing will not accommodate light rail rapid transit, will be smaller and cost $1.55 billion more than his Liberal government’s 10-lane bridge project, Delta South MLA Ian Paton said that had the bridge project gone ahead, which included highway upgrades and future capacity for light rail, it would have been opened by 2022. “Instead, under the

NDP, commuters south of the Fraser must wait a whole decade before they see any relief from congestion,” said Paton. “My constituents have already waited too long, and they deserve better than 3.5 years’ worth of environmental assessments and five more years of construction. “Once again, the NDP prove they would rather pay more for a lot less.” Delta North MLA Ravi

Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, said his government worked closely with local governments, Indigenous leaders and TransLink to reach the right solution for the region. Pleased the business case for a new crossing has been released, Delta Mayor George Harvie noted that, even with millions spent in short-term upgrades, the current

After an environmental assessment, the estimated construction timeframe for the new immersed tube tunnel will be 2026 to 2030.

crossing is not seismically safe and may have to be shut down sooner rather than later. Harvie also said he’s going to be pushing hard for improved transit. “With the studies I’ve been doing and talking to the experts at TransLink, the use of the bus is changing rapidly,” said Harvie. “We need to scatter them more and not just keep going to the Bridgeport Station. We need other options for people to get to their places of work throughout Metro Vancouver and we need a transit hub in Delta. My vision has always been that we use the Vancouver Landfill for that, so those are all things I’ll be relentless in pursuing.” Robin Silvester, president and CEO of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, said, “We are pleased to see progress on a tunnel-replacement project that will address traffic bottlenecks and bring travel time reliability to one of the most important north-to-south transportation corridors for commuters, goods movement, cross-border transportation and ferry traffic. Following this exciting announcement, we look forward to working with the Province on the development of the tunnel replacement to ensure the continued safe navigation of marine-vessel traffic along the Fraser River.” Bridgitte Anderson, president and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board

of Trade, echoed that sentiment. “Greater Vancouver is Canada’s Asia-Pacific gateway, and the George Massey Crossing is a crucial economic artery for the movement of people and goods that our region has long outgrown,” said Anderson. “We welcome this announcement. The business community has been vocal for years in advocating for a solution that will relieve congestion at this critical bottleneck, and it’s imperative that all levels of government work co-operatively alongside Indigenous partners to move the project forward in a costeffective manner without further delay.” However, Anita Huberman, CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, expressed disappointment, saying they had advocated for an eightto-10 lane bridge needed to handle the growing population south of the Fraser. Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Ken Baird said replacing the aging tunnel to accommodate current and future growth in their corner of the Lower Mainland is critical to building a sustainable and vibrant future for his First Nation. Baird noted they are pleased the province is taking the TFN’s concerns about this project seriously and committed to addressing concerns about environmental impacts on the river and the fisheries.

Taller buildings pitched for Ladner Village SANDOR GYARMATI

sgy arma ti@de lta - o ptim ist .c o m

New building height limits are proposed for Ladner Village. City council, at its Aug. 9th meeting, discussed a revitalization draft plan for the village and waterfront, which contained a series of recommendations that will go out for further feedback, before coming back as proposed draft bylaws later this year. A staff report to council notes an analysis indicates that heights of approximately fourto-six-storeys would be required in order to facilitate redevelopment of properties in the village. The higher density areas would permit up to six storeys with commercial on the ground floor and up to five storeys of residential above. In certain areas adjacent to lower height designations or fronting a street, a four-storey

maximum designation would help to “step down” development and provide a sensitive transition, the report explains. Other areas, such as along the edge of the Chillukthan Slough, the area on the south side of Georgia Street and the area on the south side of 48 Avenue are not proposed to change. The report notes that an analysis also points to a need to consider parking requirement reductions to ensure viability of redevelopment, similar to the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee’s recommendation for the city to consider extending the reduced Mixed Use Ladner Waterfront Zone parking regulations to all of Ladner Village. “In Ladner Village, there are unique challenges as parking would typically be provided at or above grade, where saleable or leasable building floor space

CITY OF DELTA REPORT

The draft concept plan indicates the areas between Delta and Elliott Streets, as well as between Delta and Georgia Streets, as having the greatest potential for higher density. would otherwise be provided. The next phase of project work will include further technical analysis on parking ratios to assess potential impacts,” the report notes. “Nevertheless, it is clear at this time that

the LVRAC process, the recent economic analysis and the recent community engagement all point towards providing more housing options and greater building heights and densities in Ladner Village.”

The report also notes a public survey this year indicated “strong support” for the draft vision and guiding principles. Most respondents expressed support for increasing the residential density of the village to

support local business and providing more housing options, while the concepts of increasing building heights and relaxing parking requirements saw majority support as well. As far as Chisholm Street and the city-owned Seven Seas site, which has been vacant for years, the draft concept plan includes “repurposing” the site into a public space. Its existing foundation would be used for outdoor events, enhanced pedestrian movement along the north side of Chisholm that connects with a pathway to the west, clustered residential on the Spot on the Water site, programmable spaces overlooking the water, as well as traffic calming at the intersection of Georgia and Chisholm streets. Those concepts are to be further refined through public feedback and consultation.

We are living in a “hinge moment”—a significant time in history. This is the time for us to get ready. Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” In verse nine, the author continues: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Wherever we are in life, we have the opportunity to get ready for something great. We can commit our work to the Lord trusting that God will establish our steps. My prayer for our community is that we would come out of the pandemic having learned important lessons. I pray that we would prepare ourselves to love one another more deeply, to care for one another more passionately, and to stand together more unified than ever before. Let’s get ready. Let’s prepare for our next chapter and see how God blesses us.

As we near the beginning of a new school year, many of us are in preparation mode. Being prepared is an important part of achieving success in life. Matthew 25 records a parable about 10 women who were preparing for a prominent person’s wedding. In a shame and honour culture that valued honour more than anything else, participating in a marriage feast of an honourable host in your village gave you honour and social standing. Five women were well prepared and enjoyed the party, and the other five were unprepared and lost the opportunity of a lifetime. The bible says that the women who were prepared were wise and the women who were not ready are referred to as being foolish. We have been through so much in the last 16 months, and I understand

Delta Pride Picnic a demonstration of love, community and resilience

Third annual event saw hundreds in attendance on Saturday at Ladner’s Memorial Park DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

It was a beautiful and emotional afternoon at the Delta Pride Society’s (DPS) third annual Pride Picnic this past Saturday (Aug. 21), where hundreds stopped by to bask in the warm light of love and support. Colourful Pride flags, balloon displays and attendee’s apparel lit up Ladner’s Memorial Park. “It was such a big highlight. It’s a really beautiful thing seeing the work coming together for people, and we just want to love on this community endlessly … So many good interactions, it was just amazing,” said Christa Horita Kadach, vice president of the Delta Pride Society. The afternoon’s entertainment was provided by dashing drag kings Justin Abit and Chris Topper, the jaw-droppingly gorgeous drag queen Myria LeNoir, and a talented youth trio from Waackingdom Dance Troupe. There was also the usual

“drag race”, where participants competed to throw together the best outfit the fastest while running between piles of shoes, bras, dresses and wigs. Before the fun began, however, DPS president John Darras asked those gathered to participate in a moment of silence for all the Indigenous children whose remains have recently been found on the sites of former residential schools. “We stand with our First Nations neighbours, family and friends at this time and always. Both communities have known discrimination, pain, and suffering and ongoing othering. We are similar but different, and we must stand together to protect and support each other,” said Darras. He then encouraged folks to donate to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society by purchasing orange ribbons they had for sale. Guests who also spoke at the picnic were Mayor George Harvie, Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, Delta

Earthwise DFC programs take a bite out of food waste

Fruit trees everywhere are flourishing, however, heavy branches do not always lead to full plates, as each season tons of edible fruit falls to the ground, ending up in landfills. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has left uncertainty and instability in its wake, and more people are facing food insecurity. Fortunately, Earthwise and the Delta Food Coalition have found a way to work together and leverage community resources to redirect them to vulnerable people. Earthwise Society is the lead agency for Delta Food Coalition (DFC), a network of community groups collaborating to address local food security issues. Delta Food Coalition’s goals are to decrease hunger, improve nutritional health, and increase local food sustainability by working together in a collaborative communitybased process. Helping to support the DFC’s actionoriented community initiatives is a dedicated team of volunteers that believes in the programs and has witnessed the difference they have made to Delta residents. Earthwise currently oversees three main DFC

Earthwise and the Delta Food Coalition have found a way to work together and leverage community resources to redirect them to vulnerable people. programs. Through the Shared Harvest program, Earthwise connects with South Delta homeowners who have excess fruit in their gardens, but are not able to harvest it all. Earthwise coordinates volunteers to help pick the fruit, and distributes a portion of it to local families in need. Shared Harvest gleans thousands of pounds of fruit annually and puts it on the tables of needy families. And the potential for food waste is not limited to suburban households. Earthwise oversees a food rescue and redistribution program that works through FoodMesh and Tsawwassen Save-onFoods to redirect food that is approaching expiry to those in need. Earthwise coordinates charities and volunteers to sort and pick up the food for dis-

tribution. This program helps charities offer their clients a wide range of fresh, healthy food choices at no cost, while saving thousands of pounds of food from the landfill. In addition to facilitating food relief and preventing waste, DFC’s programs also work to strengthen and build a more resilient local food system. Don’t Mow, Grow Victory Gardens is a DFC initiative which engages local residents to grow food at home, with assistance from Earthwise Society, and shares produce with those in need. In the last month alone, the Harvest Box program has donated more than 460 pounds of produce. If you would like to get involved, or would like more information about any of these programs, please email info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE

An award-winning ‘obedient’ team among us in Tsawwassen DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Marian A. Bijsterveld and her sweet Irish Setter received a special letter this summer from Purina Pro Plan – one of the Canadian Kennel Club’s affiliate partners – informing they had won a Top Obedience Dog award. From Tsawwassen, the team finished off the 2019 obedience competition year ranked as number one across all breeds in Canada at one of the highest levels, Utility A, right before the pandemic struck. “The Top Obedience Dog award represents one of the highest recognitions in Canadian Kennel Club’s obedience, given only to the top-performing human-dog teams in Canada each year, and you can count yourself

among them,” reads the June letter from Purina Pro Plan. Mi Jean’s You Had Me From Hello, or Nooly for short, has since retired after her five-year run of competing in conformation shows, obedience trials and rally competitions throughout Canada and the United States, which earned the duo numerous high-level titles. “My dogs, when they’re in the ring, they’re always happy. They’re so happy to do this. I always get compliments about how much their tails wag,” says Bijsterveld, who has trained and competed as a hobby for nearly 30 years. The accomplishment of ranking number one for 2019 is particularly special to Bijsterveld because of how uncommon Irish Setters are in the obedience competition world,

as it’s usually Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and Shetland Sheepdogs that dominate the leaderboards. The pair have stopped competing since their 2019 accomplishment not only because of the pandemic, but also because Nooly deserved to retire after training for 20 to 30 minutes nearly every day during her competition years, says Bijsterveld. “She worked so hard, five years, for me.” Bijsterveld describes Nooly as the sweetest Irish Setter she’s ever owned, in addition to smart and beautiful, and says she is incredibly lucky to have had such a successful five years of competing with her. The pair may compete in some fun-based veteran’s obedience trials in the fall.

From now until Aug. 27, Ladner resident Brianne Barber is collecting donations for a yard sale going toward helping safeguard the rights and wellbeing of refugees. As a social studies teacher in Surrey, she’s hoping it will encourage her students to take

direct action when it comes to supporting causes they care about. “I’ve been reading some books about children who became displaced by war, and they’re simply novels, but as I read them, more and more I realized that these novels – they might be fiction – but they’re based on real, true stories,” says Barber.

All proceeds made at her yard sale, scheduled for Saturday (Aug. 28) will be going specifically to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Canada, which works to protect and build futures for refugees, asylumseekers and those displaced by crisis and conflict. “I started to think about how I would want my students to react to learning about something like this … then, I started thinking, like, ‘okay, I have to take action because I want my students to take action.’ Because it’s one thing to learn about all of the issues that are happening in the world, but it’s another to take action,” says Barber. She emphasizes how important it is to help

others when you’re able to do so. “It’s insane to me – living in Ladner, having all of my basic needs met and then more – but there are so many children and adults out there in the world that don’t have access to their basic needs.” Barber is collecting clothes, shoes, books, toys, small knick knacks, backpacks, wallets, jewelry, linens, small kitchen appliances, working electronics and reusable or plastic bags, which she can either pick up or have dropped off at her house. Leftover items will be donated to local charities and the Ladner Thrift Shop. Until Friday (Aug. 27) you can email briannebarber@hotmail.com to arrange a donation drop off or pick-up.

It’s home sweet home for Brewers South Delta becomes first team in 13 years to win B.C. Minor junior men’s title as host club On Sunday, Aug. 15, at Ray Carter Field inside Winskill Park, the South Delta Brewers junior men’s baseball club completed a feat that has never occurred in the 13-year history of the BC Minor Junior Men’s baseball League….a host team winning a provincial title. The final playoff weekend started with an upset as the eighthseed Ladner Cubs beat the number one seed Aldergrove Dodgers 8-7 in 12 innings. Ladner would then go on to face the White Rock Wranglers in the first semi-final. This game would prove to be another exciting affair, with White Rock prevailing 7-6 benefiting from a mammoth seventh inning home run. The second semi-final would see the second seed Brewers taking on third seed Cloverdale Spurs. A strong pitching performance from Aiden Wood and Travis Pink combined with stellar catching from Aiden Hansen-Bukata and

offensive performances from Wood, Donny Macintosh, Robert Scarr, and Tavin Jackson, helped provide the Brewers with six runs to pull out a 6-3 victory. Scarr also made an amazing over the centerfield fence catch to thwart an early first inning Cloverdale lead. Brandon Graham and Riley Baines also provided the Brewers with consistent infield play. Cam Gray started the provincial final on the mound for the Brewers and his pitching kept the Wranglers off balance while throwing a no hitter in his five innings of work with seven strikeouts. Wood would take over for Gray in the sixth inning, despite pitching on back-to-back days. Wood complimented Gray’s performance with four superb, controlled innings of his own and would limit White Rock’s hits while striking out three. Hansen-Bukata helped get the Brewers on the scoreboard by hitting a long home run over the

Tigers roar into this weekend’s Bantam Prep playoffs at Winskill MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Tigers are making quite an impression as they get their first steady dose of action as a member of B.C. Premier Baseball’s Bantam Prep League. When COVID-19 related provincial health restrictions were at last eased back in

mid-June to play competitive sports beyond their community, the Tigers stumbled out of the gate by dropping three of five games to the White Rock Tritons. However, the losses have been few and far between since, earning Delta the opportunity to be one of three host teams for the upcoming playoff championship with a 23-10 record.

The Tigers will host Abbotsford, Victoria and Kelowna at Tsawwassen’s Winskill Park on Friday and Saturday. The winner of that group will advance to the Final Four the following day, hosted by White Rock at South Surrey Athletic Park. “Everyone looks a little more confident and more comfortable for sure. That’s

every aspect of the game,” said Tigers head coach Cam Frick. “Defensively, we have been playing great and our pitching has always been good. Guys are able to go a little deeper into games and that has helped.” What has Frick even more pleased than the impressive record and stats is his players’ development after having to

I think they were just in practice mode and the majority of the kids weren’t able to jump right back into game mode,” Frick added. “But in the last few weeks, not just our team, but the others we are playing, everyone has been able to click it back into gear.”

Islanders falls to Adanacs in finals MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Islanders just came up short in their bid to win back-to-back championships in the B.C. Junior “B” Tier One Lacrosse League. The Islanders’ season came to an end with a hard-fought 9-6 game three loss to the Coquitlam Adanacs in the best-of-five Mainland final. The series was

a rematch of the 2019 league finals. The Adanacs took games one (14-7) and two (11-10) in Ladner before completing the sweep on their home floor. The league opted to do separate Mainland and Island playoffs after regular season play got off to a late start when COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in early July. The Islanders swept the Port Coquitlam Saints

in straight games to advance to the final while Coquitlam got past the Langley Thunder. Delta had earned the No. 2 seed for the playoffs after going 6-2-0 in league play. Silas Richmond led the league in regular season scoring with 34 points while teammate Keegan Kozack topped the circuit in goals with 18. Kozack was coming off his rookie field lacrosse

season at Canisius College in Buffalo while Richmond is headed south in September 2022 for Bellarmine University in Kentucky. Both will be key players next season when they make the full-time jump to the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League. The Junior “A” Islanders saw their season end with an opening round three game loss to the New West Salmonbellies.

It was a silver medal finish for Ladner Minor Baseball’s 11U AA Red Sox at the Summer Season Wrap-Up Tournament in Aldergrove. Heading into the semi-finals with a 2-1 record after round-robin play, Ladner pulled off a 12-7 upset win over No. 2 seed Cloverdale to advance to the championship game against the host Aldergrove Dodgers. In an action-packed game, they battled valiantly, but were unable to overcome the strong defense of the home

team, in a narrow 7-6 defeat. The podium finish was a terrific way to cap the 2021 summer ball season. The players include: Tristan Aulik, Caiden Cheng, Cole Vaughan-Smith, Nathan North, Kingston Batista, Jaxxon Lawrence, Riley Gardner, Oscar O’Toole, Brady Vuorela, Jake Cavazzi, Aaron Kristoff, Hugo MacDonald, Jeremy Hutton, Liam Posterski and Paul Sinclair. MEINERT, Lorelei Lynne “Lollie” Lorelei Lynne “Lollie” Meinert’s life came to a peaceful end at Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock BC on August 17, 2021. Born in Saint John, NB on April 30th, 1945 to Sarah Jane (Burden) Meinert and Gustav Meinert, Lynne was a force to be reckoned with during her time with us, until passing onto everlasting peace with her Creator.

Kilkenny, Ireland

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to announce the passing of Margot King (Hinphey). Beloved wife of the late Bob King, Margot is survived by her children. Deirdre (Bill), John (Chantel), Louise (Paul), Niamh (Brent), Ailish (Greg), 10 grandchildren, her brothers, Liam (Mary K), Colm, brother-in-law, John (Beryl), 4 nephews and 2 nieces. Our beautiful mother fought cancer with courage and grace. We are blessed to have had her for as long as we did, as a mom, gran, sister, aunt, cousin, niece and friend. Her presence would light up a room; it was her glow, her smile, her gentle touch. She loved to entertain, made friends easily and people didn’t forget her. She was an incredible mother and teacher who inspired everyone who knew her. “Mom, there are no words to express how much you are missed. Your memory will live on in all of our hearts forever. We Love you.”

Loved ones who have passed on can be remembered through a Tribute Gift to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. Donations made in memory of your loved ones will be acknowledge with cards sent to family members and an acknowledgement and receipt sent to the donor.

A TIME To Remember

Lynne worked most of her professional life with the federal government, finally achieving the position of Superintendent of Dangerous Goods, Lower Mainland Division, before retiring in 2010. After retirement, Lollie travelled, gardened, enjoyed music, volunteered at her adored Tsawwassen United Church, crafted her way into the hearts of many with wonderful creations, cooked lavish meals for friends and family, hosted parties for any and all occasions, adored all things Canadiana, and left a lasting legacy of love, compassion, thoughtfulness, and friendship with so many people. These memories will not be forgotten. Predeceased by her parents, sister Dorothea Meinert, and brother Gus Meinert, Lorelei leaves behind sisters Judith Meinert Thomas and Joan Meinert Hay, brothers David Meinert and Wayne Meinert, 15 nieces and nephews from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and British Columbia, and countless grand nieces and nephews. She treated them all with humor and so much love. She also leaves behind cousins Lee and Berla Noel and her dearest friend, Norma Hamm. Lynne’s family asks that if donations are made, to please consider Tsawwassen United Church or any lung association in your area. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, August 27th at Tsawwassen United Church, led by Rev. Daniel Kirkegaard.
