Historian Peter Broznitsky researched the 11 men named on Ladner’s cenotaph DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Peter Broznitsky is on a mission to discover as much as he can about the names on the cenotaph in Memorial Park, and this year, he focused on the 11 Ladner men who died during the Second World War. Following his yearly tradition leading up to Remembrance Day, he presented his findings this time to ElderCollege and to the Ladner and Tsawwassen Rotary Clubs. He also included a brief history lesson about the Second World War and what was going on in Ladner during that time. The self-identified “amateur historian” has presented his different research over the years all across Canada, from Victoria to Halifax. “I trained as a history student at UBC, and I’ve always been interested in history. I think some of it, too, is [I enjoy] the detective angle of it – finding out cool or maybe not-so-
cool facts about people. I wouldn’t say that these are like cold cases, because obviously we know who they are and where they’re buried, but just being able to find stuff about people, I find it fascinating,” says Broznitsky. He’s found that six of the 11 men were Canadian Air Force, which is a significantly greater number than the one he found evidence of in The First World War among the 27 on the cenotaph. “The youngest was 20 – there was actually a couple of 20-year-olds who died – and the oldest was about 34,” says Broznitsky. Bert Frederick and Walter Williams were the only two he found to be married, and Frederick was the only one who had children, who were one and three-years-old when he left for war. The Ladner men died in England, France, Italy, Holland and over Germany. Some don’t have known graves and were lost at sea, but

Nowadays, we’re known as peacekeepers ... so,
I think it’s important for young people to be made aware of it and for older people to be reminded of what many really-young men went through,” he explains. “There was literally
people, like my son’s age, who suffered and fought against evil.” Through his research, he found evidence of 260 Ladnerites who were in the military during the Second World War, and
15 of them were women. This year’s presentations come as a longstanding tradition for Broznitsky, who initially started researching the Ladner men named on the cenotaph in 2005.

Delta Kindness Meters to help local groups SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta is making it a little easier for the public to help local non-profits through a colourful new initiative. Kindness Meters have been installed in various locations as part of the launch of the Kindness Counts Program this Saturday, Nov. 13, coinciding with World Kindness Day. The initiative is a partnership with the Delta School District, Delta’s Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Support Team (CRERST) and the Delta Community Foundation. Aimed at supporting community resilience and promote public art, the program sees the repurposing of five decommissioned doubleheaded parking meters obtained from another municipality to collect spare change for local service groups. To promote and encourage youth engagement and public art, local high school student artists were invited to design and paint the meters while incorporating the themes “We Love Delta” and “kindness”. The meters will be located at the North Delta Social Heart,
Sungod Recreation Centre, Ladner Village, City Hall and the Tsawwassen Town Centre. The artworks have been created by Ava Burbank from Burnsview Secondary, Kyla Dooley from Seaquam Secondary, Claire Peters from Delta Secondary, Jill Baccay from Delview Secondary and Ella Koehn from South Delta Secondary. “Over the last 20 months, I have seen firsthand how Delta residents have come together to support each other through this pandemic,” said city manager Sean McGill in a news release. “I have seen how small acts of kindness do count, and how much kindness can build community spirit during a difficult time. Delta’s kindness meters are a feel-good initiative aimed at giving back to local organizations helping those in need across our community. Not only will the meters collect donations, but they will also serve as beautiful pieces of public art, thanks to the incredible work of Delta’s student artists.” The Delta Community Foundation will manage the collection and distribution of Kindness Meter donations on behalf of and at no cost to Delta.

The Kindness Counts Program encourages residents and businesses to be kind to one another, support each other and work together as a community to get through the COVID-19 pandemic. To promote the Kindness Counts Program, Delta is also unveiling a video, which will be shared on social media on World Kindness Day. The Kindness Counts social media campaign runs from Nov. 13 to 30 and will feature a daily suggested random act of kindness, as well as a social media contest aimed at showcasing how
Delta residents and businesses spread kindness across the community. Mayor George Harvie said he’s excited to see the community-based initiative’s launch to spread messages of positivity and start conversations about how to be kind to ourselves and others. Delta School Board chair Val Windsor said the project is a wonderful
way for students to share their creativity and love for the community, while at the same time helping to support local charities. Delta Community Foundation vice-chair Carlene Lewall said the initiative speaks to the heart of why the organization has served Delta for the past 35 years, supporting local charities with donations from the community.

Delta council approves new plastic bag ban bylaw SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta will be implementing its own ban on plastic checkout bags. Council on Monday unanimously approved a regulation to prohibit the provision of single-use plastic bags to customers, although there will be several exemptions for items such as meat or frozen food, plants, prepared foods, bulk items, prescription drugs, printed materials, linens and laundry. The regulation also prohibits prepared food in any food service ware that contains polystyrene foam, but also comes with a few exceptions. Consultation with the city’s business community and public outreach will take place prior to final adoption of the bylaw in early 2022. After adoption, businesses will be given six months to transition
prior to implementation and enforcement. Two years ago, a delegation of Seaquam Secondary students requested council implement a plastic bag ban. At the time, council agreed with a staff recommendation that a bylaw should be harmonious with neighbouring municipalities. Because the City of Victoria’s plastic bag bylaw had been quashed by the BC Court of Appeal, it was also agreed that a provincewide approach was preferred. Last summer, the province gave municipalities the authority to regulate certain singleuse items, such as plastic checkout bags, which enabled Delta to enact its own bylaw without needing provincial approval. Cities including Richmond have since come up with bylaws. Coun. Dylan Kruger
had also put forward a motion for Delta to finally come up with a bylaw. That was followed by Surrey council last month approving a Surrey Plastic Bags and Single-Use Items bylaw, which will be closely mirrored by Delta’s bylaw for consistency. Metro Vancouver is also working on regulations and Delta’s bylaw is to align with the draft regional harmonized approach. A report to Delta council notes some municipalities had been holding off on single-use item bylaw implementation during the COVID19 pandemic due to concerns from businesses that were experiencing financial hardships. Business restrictions related to the pandemic have been substantially lifted and the risk to businesses of implementing single-use item regulations is now low, the Delta report notes,

Mandatory COVID-19 vaccine policy approved for City of Delta employees, volunteers SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta council on Monday approved a vaccination policy that would apply to all municipal employees and volunteers. The carefully considered policy is fair and based on health data and legal issues city manager Sean McGill told council. A report to council notes a workplace vaccination policy is an important measure that supplements workplace health and safety measures under Delta’s Communicable Disease Plan, including daily health screening, mandatory masking and physical distancing. Effective Jan. 10, 2022, all employees will be required to show proof of vaccination status or request accommodations as appropriate, or proof of valid negative testing
results for those who are unvaccinated. The intent of the delayed implementation start date is to allow sufficient time for employees who have not yet received their first dose to be fully vaccinated, a grace period similar to what is anticipated to be occurring with most other municipalities. Employees who are not vaccinated will be required to participate in a screening process that will involve testing at regular intervals. The report adds that non-compliance with the policy would lead to an unpaid leave of absence and could include discipline up to and including the termination of employment. Accommodation requests are to be reviewed on a case-bycase basis for those who are unable to be vaccinated for legitimate med-
ical reasons as supported by the provincial guidelines or for reasons that fall under the protected grounds under Human Rights legislation, the report explains. The city has engaged in discussions with both CUPE Local 454 and the Firefighter’s Union Local 1763 about the policy and the testing option. Council had already supported that, effective Oct. 24, proof of vaccination will be required for all patrons 12 years of age and older to access dropin and registered recreation centre programs. Council already also endorsed a recommendation that proof of vaccination be required for all programs at Delta’s senior’s recreation centres. Both requirements exceed the requirements set out in the B.C. provincial health officer’s orders.

THIS helps move the conversation on mental health DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
With mental health at the forefront of the many issues the pandemic has highlighted to us, The Harmony Initiative Society (THIS) knew it was vital to host a roundtable discussion about this important topic. Moderated by TV host and producer Fiona Forbes, this year’s panel included perspectives from local government officials, leaders, mental health experts, media and concerned citizens. The panel, hosted on Facebook live, was held at the North Delta Arts Centre on Wednesday night, Nov. 3. “Our goal is simple. We want to bring people together in harmony through arts and culture as our vehicle,” said THIS co-founder Warren Dean Flandez, at the beginning of the forum. “We want to shine a light on promoting connectivity and learning
through immersive learning opportunities and meaningful experiences that we can engage our community with, to bring people together.” The discussion kicked off with Mayor George Harvie laying out what work the city has done in terms of addressing the mental health crisis. Among several initiatives, he highlighted how the city allocates $115,000 annually to support children and youth at risk through free counselling, $75,000 annually to the Phoenix Society and has been working to distribute “You Matter to Delta” brochures at city hall and other city facilities. The pocket-sized brochures, which were created in collaboration with 12 community partners, has a list of resources and supports available to those living in Delta who are struggling with mental health or mental illness. “I look forward to hav-

Panelists were then asked a variety of submitted questions centring around their areas of
expertise and own lived experiences, some of which included: how to deal with a panic attack, what to do if you or somebody you know is considering suicide, how to help youth and kids get through the isolation of the pandemic and what resources we can turn to when we need help. “Most people feel unprepared or unskilled
to have these conversations [with people who are struggling with their mental health] ... [these conversations] can be very complicated, but really, what somebody needs in that place is somebody who is going to listen. That’s it. Even if you don’t know what to do, just listen and then ask how you can help,” said Andrew Neufeld,
co-founder and clinical director of Ladner-based counselling and therapy centre Alongside You. Delta Police Const. Lee Chapman, who is the community liaison for North Delta and part of the Lower Mainland Integrated Crisis Negotiation Team, acknowledged how folks sometimes try to avoid talking about mental health issues like it’s “the plague.” The panel continually affirmed how important it is to be open and have these conversations to fight against the stigma clouding around the topic. If you’re interested in watching the panel discussion in full, check out The Harmony Initiative Society’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook. com/thisinitiative/, and for more information on resources within Delta, visit https://www.delta. ca/services/social-planning/endthestigma.

Aggressive photographers disturbing Delta wildlife SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The city continues to receive complaints about photographers disturbing birds and other wildlife in sensitive areas. Delta council recently received another letter from a concerned resident, this one claiming many eager photographers were spotted
harassing barn owls at the foot of 72 Street at the Boundary Bay dyke. A follow-up letter claimed some could be seen bringing their own ladders to cross a ditch to get closer to the birds. A staff response notes Delta has been actively working with the province and Mero Vancouver on the issue of harassment of wildlife within Delta’s Wildlife
Management areas. The city earlier this year requested the province issue a regional order to prohibit the harassment of wildlife within wildlife management areas in order to allow for more active enforcement by provincial officers. That letter by the mayor was written following complaints about aggressive pho-
tographers harassing wildlife at the Brunswick Point portion of the Roberts Bank Wildlife Management Area. The staff memo notes that Ministry of Forest, Natural Operations and Rural Development staff are working on new signage in collaboration with the regional district and Delta staff. It will include information related to the

harassment of wildlife by people and their pets. The memo also notes staff from Delta, Metro and the province all conduct patrols in sensitive areas within their respective jurisdictions to increase public awareness of the sensitivities of wildlife and habitat, as well as address undesirable behaviours. Delta staff will followup with the province on the proposed new signage and enforcement efforts. As far as the specific complaints about photographers at 72 Street, that has been reported to the Conservation
Officer Service. Earlier this year, city council agreed additional patrols should be added during the summer to make sure people aren’t allowing their offleash dogs to disturb the wildlife in the foreshore area of Boundary Bay. A staff report noted the area has a large intertidal zone at low tide, which increases the challenges related to enforcement of those who let their dogs run freely off-leash. The jurisdictional boundary of the foreshore area also contributes to the enforcement challenge, the report explained.

DPD dismantle commercial scale grow-op in rural Ladner Delta Police seized approximately $2 million in hydroponic growing equipment when they shut down a large illicit cannabis operation recently in Ladner. Officers executed a warrant on Oct. 28 at a large rural property on 28th Avenue, near 64th Street. The investigation was initiated and is led by the DPD Drugs
Investigative Support team. “This was a commercial scale operation, and our officers seized an estimated $2 million in growing equipment,” says Insp. Heath Newton, head of Delta Police Investigation Services. “Officers also located over 3,900 plants in various stages of growth and 81 pounds of dried mari-
juana being packaged for distribution.” Two men were detained on site, and released. The warrant was executed with the assistance of DPD Traffic, the Crime Reduction Unit and the Patrol Support Team. Police anticipate forwarding charges under the Cannabis Act. The investigation continues.

Editor’s Note
I
IAN JACQUES
t’s an important conversation and one I was proud to be a part of. Last week I participated in a round table panel discussion about mental health. The discussion, which was live streamed on Facebook, was hosted by The Harmony Initiative Society (THIS) and moderated by television host and producer Fiona Forbes. The evening brought together representatives from the City of Delta, Delta Police, youth, mental health experts, media and community members. Mental health is tough topic to handle, but I think we struck up a real dialogue on a very difficult subject. At the start of the discussion, we were all asked to introduce ourselves and provide a bit of background on what brought us to the table and what we were hoping to learn from the experience. I was asked by my friend Warren Dean Flandez, the co-founder of THIS to participate. I was honoured to be asked. My participation, I felt, was a chance to listen and learn. As the evening progressed, the forum was that and so much more. It was empowering to see so many people in the community, many who have become friends as well as colleagues and news sources for our work here at the Optimist, open up and share their experiences with mental health. We heard many personal stories…stories that most times would be very hard to share, but the willingness of the participants to open up and share, I hope, provided not only those participating, but those watching from home, the courage to speak up and to know that talking about mental health challenges is okay. The City of Delta and Delta Police earlier this year launched a campaign about ending the stigma of mental health. Delta has also produced a new booklet with information and resources available here in Delta. Mental health should be an ongoing discussion in our community. I hope this was just the start of more dialogue and open discussions.
Predictable housing options damage our neighbourhoods
M
y sense of hearing is keenly attuned to the arrival of heavy equipment rattling through the tiny streets of my Beach Grove neighbourhood. The trucks I used to hear were for tree removal. Nowadays it’s for house removal. No matter where you live in South Delta I’m sure you’ve noticed old houses are vanishing, making way for monster homes with tiny gardens and huge garages. I get it, renovating Vancouver specials and bungalows is unappealing when you can knock it down and build a palace. Property prices warrant a bigger footprint and single-family homes remain king. We have a housing supply disaster on the horizon. If we want to keep our community inclusive and diverse and dare I say, affordable, we have to plan now. Demand for housing has never been higher and supply never so low. The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver says the benchmark price for a home in Tsawwassen is $1,460,000 and a Ladner home is $1,340,000,
Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT
up more than 25 per cent in two years. Condos average at $648,000 in Tsawwassen and $591,000 in Ladner. These prices are affordable to only a small sector of society. How can the next generation of middle class live amongst us? The answer is… they simply can’t. I often wonder where does the local grocery store clerk or the waitress that serves me live? I guarantee they can’t even dream of renting or owning a home here. The job vacancy rate in Delta is shocking, because most employees have to commute. Some residents of Beach Grove were ecstatic after an application for a 20-unit townhouse development on
the Beach Grove Golf course was defeated by city council last week. Their petition with 625 names on it helped to persuade some councillors to vote no. While that may or may not be a win depending on your perspective, it’s fair to say resistance to multi-family housing will continue in South Delta. It’s easy to say we don’t want something from the comfort of our own homes, while others struggle to find affordable housing in a community they love. Nothing is more consistent than change. Change is scary and the older we get the more resistant we are to it. I am the first one outraged to see green space and character homes disappear, but not if they are replaced with solutions to our housing problems. Duplex’s, townhomes, low-cost condos, rental buildings, and seniors housing, these must become the future builds in our neighbourhoods. Embrace diversity, it’s the future, whether we like it or not. Fed up with anti-tree culture
Editor: I see the tree hating crowd in Ladner has won yet another round and five mature shade giving trees will be chopped down on my once tree lined street. The residents of two new builds, which take up the entire lot, are worried about “drive way length.” Talk about “not seeing the forest for the trees.” I guess huge houses and lots of car storage space are their priorities. The fact that this announcement came while environmentalists, scientists and world leaders are meeting in Glasgow to try and save our planet from burning and flooding our species
to death is quite ironic. The scientists are imploring world leaders to plant millions of trees as soon as possible. Wake up! Mature trees should be more protected than ever. They shade and cool our communities. It was just announced on Nov. 2 how many residents died here in greater Vancouver from the heat dome this past summer. Having lots of trees is proven to cool homes and neighbourhoods significantly. Earlier this year we already had another couple who live down my street who decided to chop a city tree down with an ax one Sunday with no permit, these two got absolutely no conse-
quences from our Delta city staff. The staff seem to think that me and another neighbour were being “mean” when we wanted them to be fined and have to pay for the replacement of the beautiful black locust tree they chopped down. This is just one instance of the culture at city hall being completely ignorant about the importance of trees. I am fed up with the tree hating culture here from the mayor, city staff and council and certain residents. If you hate trees so much move up above the tree line to the northern part of our country or to the middle of the prairies. Martha Cheney

The on-going saga of a tunnel replacement Editor: Don’t you hate it when politics get in the way of good sense? In the matter of good sense, the Liberal government spent millions of dollars on studies and permits and started work
on a bridge albeit as a bribe to be re-elected. The NDP government decided it is not a good and spent millions more of our money then decided that a tunnel is the best option.
No permits yet and by the time it gets built without an option for LRT it will be obsolete and here we are right back where we were 40 years ago when we moved to Ladner. Preston Baggott
Not everyone wants the border open Editor: Re: The border won’t be open until we can travel freely, both ways (Community Comment, Optimist, Nov. 4). In his most recent Community Comment, Brad Sherwin stated that “it’s time to make our border free again, both ways. Isn’t that what our veterans fought for?”
The answer to that question is no. Not everyone agrees with Brad Sherwin, that the Canada-U.S. border should be open right now, both ways, when the pandemic is still ongoing. One of them is my 97-year-old father-in-law, a veteran who fought in The Second World War
and The Korean War, who lives in a care home, and is scheduled for his third (booster) shot. The veterans, like him, who survived two world wars/ conflicts, risked their lives to fight against Fascism. They didn’t fight for the right of some people, to go shopping for cheap gas and groceries, in the U.S. A.Cameron

A bigger meaning of freedom and democracy Editor: Re: Community Comment (Optimist, Nov. 4) Mr. Sherwin’s last line of his column, isn’t that what our veterans fought for. I would answer that
line with, yes they did fight for our freedom, however, that freedom, as I see it, was not meant to jeopardize other lives or to be a party of or the cause of enhancing that
process in a world-wide crises. I believe our veterans had a much bigger meaning of freedom and democracy. E Tobin

Recalling her days in the Second World War JANICE MILLER
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Stories of courage and bravery get the headlines as we reflect on the sacrifices made during The First and Second World Wars, but off the battlefield, and behind the scenes, laboured faithful women like Brenda Swinton who served an essential role in the war efforts. Swinton, a resident of The Waterford Seniors’ Community in Tsawwassen, was born in 1926 in Hull, England. When the war began, she was briefly evacuated to the countryside only to return before the bombing had stopped. “The bombs did come, but we had a shelter,” she remembers. “I had a different perspective on war then. To look at something when you’re 16 versus when you’re 90 is
different. I didn’t think a lot about it then; I tried to close my mind against it.” As a teen, she did her part in the Women’s Land Army. “There weren’t any men around. Women had to keep the home fires burning,” she recalls with a laugh. “The work wasn’t glamourous. We weeded vegetables and potatoes on our hands and knees all the time. Lifted hay, milked the cows, drove tractors. I like the outdoors, and I enjoyed it.” Her parents divorced, and when her mother went to Canada and at age 17, Swinton chose to follow. “It was a dangerous journey in the middle of winter, in the middle of war. I was the only woman,” she said. She fondly recalls Christmas 1944 when a Navy escort pulled up

over by pulley. The travellers celebrated by singing carols and eating a ‘decent meal.’ After completing her degree at the University of Toronto, she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. “I thought it might be an adventure. If you have a university degree, you get a commission right away. I worked as an Assistant to the Admin officer — mostly pushing paper,” she said. A memorable posting was to Goose Bay, Labrador, where the only way in and out in the winter was by plane. “It was very isolated.” She recalls that they had to make their fun during the frigid winter nights. “There was no TV; they used to bring in movies for us to watch. And we used to have a lot of parties,” she says wryly.
Then she was posted to Bagotville, Que. She travelled there by train dressed in full uniform. Stepping off the train, she met another uniformed officer — Gordon Swinton. They had breakfast together and were married six months later. Shortly after, her career with the RCAF ended. “I got pregnant. In those days, if you got pregnant, you were discharged,” she said. The family settled in Vancouver following Gordon’s last posting. In 2019, Canadian filmmaker Eric Brunt interviewed her as part of his Last Ones Standing documentary about Canada’s Second World War Veterans. 1.1 million Canadian served in the Second World War. Today there are less than 30,000 Canadian — 95-year-old Brenda Swinton is one of them.

Rotary Interact Students remember veterans Last Friday (Nov. 5), members of South Delta Secondary School’s Interact Club and the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen joined in their annual collaboration to place 40 white crosses on the lawn at the Kiwanis Longhouse to mark Remembrance Day. Bearing the names of fallen soldiers, as well as a poppy for each, the crosses honour Delta veterans of past wars. “Every year, I look forward to participating in the Remembrance Day project with the students and seeing the impact it has upon younger generations,” said Rotary Club president Greg Muirhead. “It feels even more important to honour our veterans this way when we have limitations on gatherings in observance of
Remembrance Day.” Interact Club co-presidents, Mateo Mazari and Liam Murray released a statement on behalf of the Club. “When we think about Remembrance Day, we think about the ultimate sacrifice that brave Canadians gave, not only for us, but for the countless people affected by conflicts around the globe. We are reminded that among the pain and suffering, Canada stands as a proud peacekeeper. Canadian families have been ripped apart by war and yet still stand strong when called upon. The Canadian Armed Forces are a tapestry rich with connections and cultures. “Many groups came forward in times of need, including First Nations, immigrants and many others. As we reflect on
Canada’s history, we remind ourselves of the extraordinary things that happen when a nation bands together to help. Thank you to everyone that stepped forward, so that we could live peacefully. Your sacrifice and impact will never be forgotten.” Interact clubs are service clubs for young people ages 12 to 18 and according to Edwin Lee, Youth Director for the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, Interact is a worldwide movement that is growing quickly. “Now there are almost 14,911 Interact clubs in 145 countries and geographical areas with almost 343,000 young people involved,” said Lee. “We are so impressed with the work done by students of the Interact Club we sponsor at SDSS.”
In honour of those who served our country, we owe our gratitude. ‘Our Augustine House Veterans’ Gordon A.

Delta Hospital to get new glidescope
TB Vets provides more than $1-million in respiratory care Twenty-nine hospitals in British Columbia are able to buy new respiratory equipment this year with the support of donors to TB Vets Charitable Foundation. In Delta, TB Vets is supporting the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation with a grant of $ 35,542 to purchase a new GlideScope Core Video Laryngoscope System. The glidescope is an all-in-one system offering immediate visualization of the airway during intubation. Glidescopes are used daily for intubating patients for general surgery while under anesthetic.
Lest We Forget
The Delta Hospital surgical department performs close to 9000 surgeries per year. Hard hit by COVID-19, the surgeons are now working through the backlog of procedures coupled with increased infection control protocol. The new glidescope will increase the hospital capacity to perform more surgeries. The grant is part of $1.1-million in funding provided this year by TB Vets to hospitals and first responders across BC. “We are now in our second year of the pandemic, and although life is slowly getting back to normal, hospitals are still having to treat many COVID-19 patients,
putting great pressure on the healthcare system” says TB Vets CEO Kandys Merola. “It is essential that we help hospitals buy new equipment that will support our province’s medical frontline heroes during the pandemic and beyond. This year’s record $1.1-million in grants has been made possible because of the generosity of TB Vets donors who contribute to our Key Tag program. We also have a growing number of donors who have included TB Vets in their Wills, ensuring that respiratory care in BC continues to improve and grow for years to come.”
On both National Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, GCT would like to thank all the men, women, and their families who have sacrificed for and served our country in the past, and all those who continue to do so today. We are grateful for your service.

South Park Elementary student Audrey Renner Wallace is one of 26 winners in Kid Food Nation’s annual recipe contest for her brightly colourful and health-conscious “Sushi Salad.” Winners of the competition – which was put on by BGC Canada’s Kid Food Nation program and is in partnership with President’s Choice Children’s Charity and Corus Entertainment – received a robust prize pack and $5,000 grant for an “in-class good growing system, plus tools and supplies for the winners and their classmates to cultivate their own kitchen gardens at home. The prize pack included a tablet, assorted culinary tools, a custom chef jacket and apron, a copy of the Kid Food Nation cookbook that holds the winning recipes and a winner certificate. Eight-year-old Renner Wallace, who is a member of the BGC South Coast B.C. club, recalls being “so excited and surprised” when her mother told her she was one of the winners in the country-wide contest for her sushi salad recipe. The sauce, or salad dressing, is a mixture of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar and oil, and the salad can be topped with sesame seeds and mayonnaise. Winners also got to take part in a virtual cooking lesson with celebrity chef Marysol Foucault on Oct. 30 where they learned how to make cheese and corn scones. Renner Wallace says, during the lesson, she was taught the optimal, and memorable, way to crack an egg. “If you crack an egg on
the counter, the counter gets dirty, and if you crack an egg on a bowl, the bowl gets dirty, but if you crack an egg on another egg, it just breaks the one,” she explains. Mother Lindsay Renner Wallace says Audrey has been even more inspired to cook lately and has been learning new recipes. The Kid Food Nation program teaches kids cooking skills and is intended to get them excited about healthy food and healthy habits. Deltassist benefits from Rotary shredding event
Christmas will be a little brighter with food for festive season dinners among 40 Delta families who need a hand up thanks to the generosity of Delta residents. Residents from Ladner and area showed up in 75 vehicles for the Ladner Rotary Shred-A-Thon on Oct. 30. Proceeds of $4,000 from the event will go to Deltassist, which organizes the annual Christmas Hampers program for 600 or more needy families who register each year. Once again the challenge of Detassist’s Christmas Hampers program was the lack of food drives from schools throughout Delta and the small army of volunteers to pick up, sort and deliver food donations because of pandemic restrictions, so food gift cards will be purchased with the funds.

harmony and where people of all generations are valued and appreciated for who they are as people, and not based on them believing the “right kind of religion” or based on who they love or how they vote. As Desomond Tutu and others have said before in these or similar words, “I am not free until everyone is free.” When salvation is limited to one person, or group of people, this runs against an understanding of God’s love for all of humanity and the created order. When we approach “the other,” from a place of love, we are humbled and are better able to learn more about ourselves, our humanity, and the nature of God through the experiences of others.

Tsawwassen poet Stephen Collis a finalist for Governor General Literary Award MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
You never know who you might bump into strolling around Boundary Bay, perhaps even an award-winning poet. Tsawwassen resident Stephen Collis is a finalist for the prestigious 2021 Governor General Literary Award thanks to his latest work, A History of the Theories of Rain. “It’s my wife’s hometown and we have lived here for almost 20 years,” said Collis. “I walk a lot in Tsawwassen and it’s one way that I have really come to love the place. Just as a physical space of geography with the birds coming through all the time because it’s a fly way. I find the walking creeps into the writing all the time.” Collis is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose. His earlier work includes The Commons, On the Material, Once in Blockadia and Almost Islands: Phyllis Webb and the Pursuit of the Unwritten. Two years ago, the poetry and poetics professor at Simon Fraser University was awarded the Latner Writers’ Trust Poetry Prize, which honours a poet for their body of work. It was his publisher,

Governor General Literary Award finalist Stephen Collis enjoys the Boundary Bay trails near his Tsawwassen home. Vancouver-based Talon Books, that nominated A History of the Theories of Rain. The book explores the strange effect our current sense of impending doom has on our relation to time, approaching the unfolding climate catastrophe conceptually through its dissolution of the categories of “man-made” and “natural” disasters. How do we go on with our daily lives while a disastrous future impinges upon every moment?
“You definitely could say it’s a book about climate change but it’s more about poetry. It’s not science and it’s not public policy. It’s about the feelings,” explained Collis “The grief you feel, especially after the summer we just went through and the summers we had when we were kids. Those are not coming back probably. We live in South Delta or even in Richmond and it’s like are we going to make those dykes taller?” It was several years ago
when Collis spoke out against Kinder Morgan’s pipeline test work being done on Burnaby Mountain. It resulted in the Texas company including him in a multi-million dollar lawsuit claiming he was influencing protestors that were impeding its work. “I was doing a lot of environmental activism. In some ways by accident because all this pipeline stuff landed in my (classroom) backyard here in Burnaby. Students are coming
to you and asking about it then you are starting to meet up and talk to people about what is going on. I kind of got wrapped up in that,” Collis recalled. “They sued me, another professor up here, and a couple of other people just to get us out of the way. They we were getting interviewed in the papers and writing op-eds and other things. They claimed it was encouraging people to protest so you are responsible. (Laughing) it was eventually dropped but there were a few months of nail-biting while looking around wondering where I can find $5 million dollars.” Overseen by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Governor General’s Literary Awards were initiated to promote Canadian literature and encourage Canadians to read. The winners will be announced on Nov. 17 and receive $25,000. “You can’t quite predict these things or think too much about them. I’ve written a lot of books and published a lot of books and have been lucky to get nominated for or get awards for things in the past. You try do the best work you can and try to get better every time,” added Collis. “Part of the challenge is to learn and say okay, maybe I can try something else here.”
Ladner’s Daniel Joseph self-publishes his second book DANI PENALOZA

Daniel Joseph’s new book explores teachings from his father’s journal entries.
Daniel Joseph prefers the term “selfevolution” over self-help to describe his new book, Wise Words From A Father. Based off the journal entries of the Ladner creative’s own father, Gilbert Joseph, he transcribed an array of entries that covered all sorts of topics, like relationship advice and spirituality, while adding his own perspectives along the way. “It really is a multi-generational labour of love,” says Joseph. As he was writing the book, which he started in 2012, he became a father, himself.
“Then it became not just listening and reading to my dad’s wise words, and a part of the book then becomes me now being a dad and, as a father, providing my own wise words to my own son. So, that’s what kind of brings it full circle,” says Joseph. The book was written to share wisdom and lessons, but not only to those on the path of fatherhood. “It’s to act as a reminder that we already have a lot of wisdom and knowledge within us, and we sometimes just need a reminder and that little nudge in the right direction to be our best and true to self ... When you get a perspective from someone completely different, that is outside of your echo chamber, you gain some insights,
learn some new perspectives that can make you more well-rounded,” he says. Wise Words From A Father can be found digitally through Kindle and will soon be available as a paperback on Amazon. Joseph plans to have his book available at Black Bond Books in Ladner in 2022 once the pandemic has settled down, as he hopes to do another book signing, like the one he did back in 2012 for his first book, Me, My Dreams and I. In addition to his writing, Joseph is also an actor and filmmaker, with his most recent project being associate producer on Vancity Raps, a feature documentary capturing the intrinsic, robust hip hop scene in Vancouver.

Tsawwassen marine artist John Horton could not have imagined his painting of the Franklin Expedition’s HMS Erebus would one day hang aboard HMCS Harry DeWolf. Harry DeWolf sailed into Vancouver Harbour last month, having completed the first Northwest Passage transit of a Canadian Naval vessel since 1954. In 2014, inspired by discovery of the wrecked Franklin ship, Horton painted a rendition of HMS Erebus, which unexpectedly would have special significance to Harry DeWolf ‘s Commanding Officer Corey Gleason, and his crew. Horton presented his painting to the ship’s company, at the end of a three-day RCN Canadian Leaders at Sea (CLaS) outreach program in which he participated. Horton was invited to join a group of 15 prominent Canadian community leaders
from across Canada who boarded Canada’s newest warship at Lower Lonsdale’s Burrard Dry Dock Pier in North Vancouver and sailed in her to Victoria’s Ogden Point. It is interesting to note that the famed RCMP St. Roch, first Canadian vessel, and second only to sail through the Northwest Passage, was built at the same Lonsdale location in 1928. This brand new Arctic and offshore patrol ship is the lead ship of its class and one of six built or under construction to ensure Canada’s Arctic interests are secure. These patrol vessels are designed to operate anywhere in the world, but especially in first-year ice of up to one and a half metres thick. Unlike icebreaking-vessels that normally operate only in icy waters, this new ship can operate in a wider range of conditions. During the voyage to Victoria, where a large crowd was on hand to welcome the ship, the CLaS group learned to

Tsawwassen’s John Horton (left) with Commander Corey Gleason, HMSC Harry DeWolf. appreciate the ship’s amazing capabilities. While transiting the Gulf of Georgia and Haro Strait, the crew carried out in-depth demonstrations of the ship’s potentials including search and rescue, fire-fighting, damage control and weapons firing. On a personal level, Horton’s special interest in the Arctic prompted a rewarding conversation with Gleason whereby they discussed at length the illfated Franklin Expedition and how Harry DeWolf had followed
Franklin’s tragic path. “Hearing how the ship anchored near the wreck sites enabling visits to graves of the crew, was an unparalleled privilege,” said Horton. “It was gratifying to learn that the ship’s company of approximately 87 sailors had become fully engaged with the history of the 1848 Expedition and gained a huge respect for those who had gone before.” HMCS Harry DeWolf also called in at several hamlets inviting leaders and community
members aboard. This was all about strengthening relations with communities in the Arctic and developing meaningful commitments to the people of the High North. From B.C.’s South Coast, Harry DeWolf will transit the Panama Canal to complete a circumnavigation of North America and return to Halifax in December. At the conclusion of this recent segment of Canadian Leaders at Sea, participants were requested to involve their communities in furthering awareness of the important part played by the RCN in ensuring Canada secures its position and respect internationally. To record this historic voyage, Horton is now working on a painting of Harry DeWolf in an Arctic setting. Editor’s note: Horton, OBC, CSMA, FCA, resides in Tsawwassen and is captain of the 52-foot Delta Lifeboat stationed in Ladner. He is a current recipient of The Order of British Columbia.

Sun Devils soar into post-season
South Delta captures 21st annual RCMP Red Serge Classic thanks to a thrilling final day MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The South Delta Sun Devils will enter the post-season back on top of the provinicial AAAA girls volleyball rankings thanks to a wild and memorable Saturday in Port Coquitlam. The Sun Devils closed out tournament play by capturing the prestigious 21st annual Coquitlam RCMP Red Serge Classic at Riverside Secondary. The 10-team event was loaded with ranked teams and culminated with No. 2 South Delta spoiling the hometown victory party with a straight set win over the top ranked Rapids. The result was the same as when the two teams met in the UBC tournament final back in September but Riverside took over the No. 1 ranking two weeks ago thanks to its win at Handsworth, a tournament the Sun Devils were not apart of, capturing an event at Semiahmoo instead. The pollsters looked to be correct with the flip of teams when the Rapids rolled to an easy 25-11, 25-14 win over South Delta to close out pool play on Saturday morn-
ing. The Sun Devils put that loss behind them to produced three straight wins in the playoff round, capping a five match marathon day with a 30-28, 25-22 triumph over Riverside in the championship game. Along the way, South Delta needed three sets to defeat No. 4 Handsworth in the quarter-finals (2522, 23-25, 15-11) and No. 7 Okanagan Mission (17-25, 25-20, 15-13) in the semis. “I kind of think it worked for us to be honest,” said SDSS head coach Dan Burgess. “By the time we played Riverside we already knew we were going to be second in our pool for sure, if not first. We didn’t tell the girls to take it easy but you definitely got the sense they were taking their foot off the gas a little bit. “We lost so badly in the morning round. They must have come into the final thinking we can do this in our home gym. They have been beating my girls since Grade 8. In club and in school. That’s why (the girls) were so ecstatic when they beat them at UBC earlier this season. I really feel like, for better or for worse,

You could feel the air get sucked out of the gymnasium when we were matching them point for point.” South Delta needed to dig deep to get past Okanagan Mission after setter Lauren Wight was sidelined with an injury and standout middle Rachel Rosser also spent some time on the bench.
Down a set, Burgess was even thinking his girls were headed for the third place game when they roared back, led by the leadership of Grade 12 twins Jane and Kate McDonald. “I told them last night in an email, your defining feature is becoming your mental toughness. This a team that never dwells on mistakes. Just the mental
toughness of this team to not really feel pressure is their calling card now,” Burgess continued. “Jane and Kate were born to lead. We have a whole bunch of very talented Grade 11s but they don’t have that leadership pedigree yet and that’s what Jane and Kate just deliver in spades. They bring the leadership this team needs to suc-
ceed.” It was a pair of those Grade 11 standouts that took home individual honours with middle Mya Cressy earning MVP honours for her superb play throughout the weekend and Esther Lim receiving the Libero award for her terrific defensive work. The South Fraser AAAA Championships take place next week.
South Delta opens provincial football playoffs Friday in Cloverdale The South Delta Sun Devils nearly made it a sweep of their rivalry games as they now turn their attention to the opening round of the B.C. High School Football playoffs.
After collecting the inaugural Delta Bowl two weeks earlier with a victory over the Seaquam Seahawks, the Sun Devils closed out regular season play Saturday with a hard-fought
14-12 loss to the New West Hyacks in the annual battle for the Bill Kushnir Bronze Boot. The defeat left South Delta, Belmont and St. Thomas More in a three-way log jam in the
Western AAA Conference with 2-5 records. A tiebreaker formula, that takes into account headto-head games and point differential, gave the Devils fifth place to set up a round of 16 playoff
date with the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers on Friday (1:30 p.m.) in Cloverdale. Visit www.delta-optimist.com for a full recap of the Kushnir Bronze Boot game. We will...

travel as many other schools cannot.” The Sun Devils secured their Vancouver Island trip by successfully defending their South Fraser Zone title last week. They opened with a 2-0 win over Tamanawis then took care of Panorama Ridge 4-0 in the title game. The final showed how much progress the team had made since defeating the Surrey school 4-2 back in September. “The girls were not to be denied and came ready to play. That was a bit of a relief,” added McLennan after a lackluster opening game win. “We played well throughout and neutralized their dangerous players very effectively so except for a few forays into our circle, we had the game under control. The final score was well deserved.”

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
Losing a loved one leaves a heartache no one can heal. But their memory is a precious gift that no one can steal. — We miss you and love you — Mom, Cheryl, Randy, Amber, Ryley, Kaisha & Siera
Keith C. LaPorte October 27th, 1950 - November 11th, 2019 In Memory,
by family, friends, business associates and basically everyone he ever came in contact with, and especially by me, his Wife, “Terrie”. I know it is two years, but sometimes it feels like longer, and then it feels like yesterday. We, Michelle, Morgan, Mac, and all the extended family, Gavin, Geof and Mercedes, we were all so fortunate to have had you in our lives and every aspect of your out-going cheerful personality, fun filled spontaneity, your love of sports and guidance for all of us including grandchildren, your traditions and high standards are keeping us all in line.

Jean passed away at Irene Thomas Hospice in Delta after a four year battle with cancer. Her husband Jerry was by her side as she left this earthly domain and many other family and friends visited her at the hospice over the weeks that she was in their care. Jean was best known for her poetry as well as her generosity and love for her friends and family. Born in Eccles, near Manchester, UK, she moved to Canada in 1954 with her parents and 4 other siblings who settled in Edmonton. Later she moved to Prince George where she had two sons, Dean and David, then moved to Fort St. James, where she performed Broadway shows and musicals while raising her boys. Years later she moved with them to Delta where she worked for CP Air, Canadian and then Air Canada, as their Sales Event Coordinator for special events and trade shows, until her retirement.

PATEMAN, Geoffrey Hugh December 9, 1935 − October 17, 2021 Geoff passed away at Magnolia Gardens in Langley after a long battle with congestive heart failure, COPD, and Covid−19. Geoff was born in England and emigrated to Canada in August 1973 where he established his very successful company, TOP Insurance Agency. Geoff had a passion for golf! Geoff will be missed by his wife, Dianne; daughters, Carol, Joanna, Salli, and Leanne; and six wonderful grandchildren, Danny, Alanna, Joey, Corey, Brendan, and Fortune. OBITUARIES
COIL, Evelyn Julianna Born Esk, Saskatchewan, December 8, 1928 and died peacefully in White Rock, October 20, 2021. Evelyn was the youngest of 12 children, predeceased by siblings and parents; predeceased by husband Albert John (Jack) William Coil. Evelyn is survived by her only son Albert Jeffrey Coil (Sigrid) and her much loved grandsons, Jordan and Jason. She grew up in Vernon, BC, and had a strong bond with her older brother Bill - who taught her about sports. She was a passionate spectator of hockey and football for all her life.
Evelyn loved sewing and creating things with her hands for family and friends. Many of her waking hours were spent at the sewing machine. Evelyn created over 300 teddy bears ranging in size from 3 inches to 2 feet tall. Driving a car gave her independence and solitude. She loved dogs, all dogs, but disliked cats, all cats. She enjoyed crabbing in Boundary Bay and watching sports on TV. She would scream loudly for a Maple Leaf’s or Canuck’s goal, and was louder only when a wasp or bee would get too close to her. She enjoyed baking, but sewing always “took the cake”. Evelyn was a good friend and good neighbour to many; she will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. There will be no service by request. HAAF, William (Bill) Frank It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William, known as Bill on October 29th at the Delta Hospital at the age of 82, with his loving wife Louise by his side. Bill battled MDS the last year before peacefully continuing his journey.

Bill was a gear box mechanic with Canadian Airlines for 25 years, often travelling around the world for work before retiring in 1998. He had many hobbies; bowling, golfing, carpet bowling, travelling, woodworking and puzzling, but his favourite hobby was spending time with family and friends. You would often see Gramps rain or shine at one of his 5 grandchildren’s sporting events cheering on the ones who put the biggest smile on his face.
MACKINNON, Edward Francis (Frank) Frank MacKinnon, born in Cape Breton on August 4th, 1942, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2021, at St. Paul’s Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, Vancouver, B.C. while Kathleen and daughter Samantha kept watch over him. ‘Leslie in Ladner’ Christmas. Even ‘if’ we enjoy Christmas it is a stressful time for many-but there is good news. We can lessen our stress. Why not make ‘new’ plans for December - which could shake things up a bit. Start by reviewing activities that cause you stress each year and find easier ways of doing them or eliminate them altogether. Entertain if you want or do not entertain. Traditions are nice but not at the expense of your peace, joy, and celebration...which is what this season is about. Have your yearly check-up and incorporate activities into your day that make you smile, laugh, and feel good. Free up some time; relax; enjoy your tea; watch YouTube concerts; dance; play an instrument; photograph nature; read a book; refinish furniture or volunteer. Perhaps you could have hot dogs for Christmas dinner and watch a movie. Do everything possible to enjoy ‘Christmas time’ because it is still ‘Your time.’ Love and peace.
