Delta float homeowners living on mud SANDOR GYARMATI

Her home is starting to sit on mud very quickly. Ladner Reach float homeowner Inger Kam is raising alarm and trying to get answers on what will be done about the buildup of sediment in the river channel, which

is beginning to tilt her home and is especially concerning during low tide. “It doesn’t seem like anyone wants to take responsibility and get something done. This is happening fast and it’s only going to get worse,” Kam told the Optimist. Saying the earlier

flooding in the Fraser Valley and resulting debris has sped up the build-up, Kam wonders why an ongoing dredging maintenance program is still not in place despite years of lobbying by the City of Delta. In an email to the province and copied to the Optimist, Delta

resident Mike Owen, an organizer with the Ladner Sediment Group, said the channels and leased water lots from the province are being inundated at an alarming rate. This winter, Ladner Reach received one-tothree feet of sediment, a result of flooding of

the Fraser River and its tributaries, he said. Owen believes both the province and federal governments have increased the sediment flow into the lower Fraser River by over-regulating sediment removal and by approving the diversion of water flow for the benefit of economic activity

in the main south arm of the river. He listed a series of recommendations including government realizing that dredging is vital and can be done immediately as well as Ottawa halting ocean disposal fees. CONTINUED: on Page 5

Mayor George Harvie announced his full Achieving for Delta team of council and school board candidates at a campaign event at Tsawwassen Springs on Tuesday night.

Seeking re-election, Mayor George Harvie announces slate SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta Mayor George Harvie has announced his new slate that will be running in this year’s municipal election. At a packed unveiling event held at Tsawwassen Springs on Tuesday evening, Harvie announced his re-election bid with new as well as familiar faces that will be on the Achieving for Delta ticket for council and school board. “Over the last four years, I have worked to deliver on record investments while keeping taxes low and Delta debtfree,” said Harvie. “I’m proud of our achievements, but there is much more to do. It’s time to elect a full team of Achieving for Delta council and school board candidates to continue moving our community forward. Our Achieving for Delta team represents a wide range of experience, ages, and back-

grounds.” Joining him on the slate for council are incumbents Dylan Kruger and Alicia Guichon, both first elected with Harvie in 2018, along with incumbent school board trustees Daniel Boisvert and Jessie Dosanjh, who are making the switch from school board to run for a council seat. Also running on the slate and hoping to make it onto council for the first time are Rod Binder and Jennifer Johal. Highlighting Harvie’s Achieving for Delta slate for school board is three-term incumbent Val Windsor, the current board chair who had previously run as an independent. “George Harvie knows how to bring people together and I am proud to be running on his team. It is vital that council and school board continue to work together to deliver on needed projects for our community,”

said Windsor. She said she got to know Harvie during the last four years as the district partnered with the city on several initiatives including the new North Delta Secondary track. Incumbent Erica Beard is once again running for school board, while Nimmi Daula, Ammen Dhillon, Masako Gooch, Maury Kask and Joe Muego are on Harvie’s ticket hoping to make it onto the board for the first time. Harvie said he wanted strong representation from both North and South Delta and his candidates come from diverse backgrounds. “Our team is ready to hit the ground running,” said Harvie. “Starting this week, we will be knocking on doors across Delta to spread the news and ask for our community’s support. Delta is one of the best communities in Canada to live and raise a family. Together,

let’s make it number one.” Harvie said he will lay out a comprehensive platform over the coming months that will focus on low taxes, safer communities, keeping families and seniors together and achieving investment for a more livable and climate-resilient Delta. Noticeably absent on the ticket are Coun. Dan Copeland, Delta’s former fire Chief, and Coun. Lois Jackson, the city’s former longtime mayor who hired Harvie to be the city’s manager back in 2002. Jackson has clearly been at odds, heated sometimes, with Harvie at the council table over the past few years. The Optimist is contacting the remaining incumbent councillors and school trustees in the coming days to get an answer as to their status for the election. More details in next week’s Optimist. The election takes place Oct. 15.

Veteran Delta councillor, school board trustee to call it quits SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A longtime Delta city council member and a Delta Board of Education trustee announced this week that they won’t be seeking re-election in this year’s municipal election. First elected to council in 1988, Bruce McDonald is hanging it up after serving nine terms. Also retiring from public office is school board trustee Laura Dixon, who was first elected in 2008. She ran with McDonald, as well as council veteran Jeannie Kanakos and school trustee Nick Kanakos, in the previous couple of elections as a slate of independents. Raising his family in North Delta and still residing in the community, McDonald has been a fixture on council with his no-nonsense, practical approach. “After a great deal of personal reflection and

discussion with family and friends, I have decided to announce that I will not be seeking re-election in the coming election,” said McDonald in a news release. “I am proud to have been part of the careful development that has led to the continuing privileged status Delta has as a wonderful community to live, work, and play.” Having twice made an unsuccessful run for the mayor’s seat against Lois Jackson, McDonald has also served on numerous committees over the years and was also Delta’s representative with Metro Vancouver on several occasions. Having also served as school board chair, Dixon has served on provincial bodies and has been a vocal advocate for adequate provincial funding. It’s an issue that continues to challenge the Delta school district today as the school board this spring faced another

Emphasizing the importance of succession planning, Dixon believes it’s time for new perspectives and representation on the board. “Today, I am announc-

ing my retirement from public office at the end of this term,” said Dixon in a news release. “I came to this role fourteen years ago with a passion for making sure students had every opportunity to

thrive. I’m proud to leave now having achieved this goal and having advocated passionately for the work of our tremendous support staff, educators and leadership in Delta.” Dixon also continues

to serve the community through her work with Tsawwassen Rotary and as a board member with local non-profits. Both Dixon and McDonald also announced they are endorsing Mayor George Harvie’s Achieving for Delta slates for council and school board. McDonald said there is no one more qualified to lead than Harvie, Delta’s former longtime city manager who was elected mayor in 2018. “The next council will certainly face difficult challenges. I have been incredibly impressed with the way that Mayor Harvie has led our city over the last four years,” said McDonald. Dixon described the team of candidates for the school board as a “powerhouse” and the most highly qualified group ever to run. The municipal election will be held Saturday, Oct. 15.

Inger Kam says the port and government need to take responsibility for a dredging program before it’s too late for float homeowners and others who rely on the river channel. CONTINUED from P 1 Last fall, Delta Mayor George Harvie, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Ken Baird and Musqueam Indian Band Chief Wayne Sparrow sent a joint letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urging action on local channel dredging in the lower Fraser. They said they recognize the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s commitment to continue to work with them along with other government agencies and stakeholders toward a long-term sustainable dredging program, and while they appreciated the port’s announcement of $1 million in funding for local Delta channel dredging for the upcoming year, they were hopeful that contribution would be a catalyst toward the development of a comprehensive, funded long-term plan

for maintaining the local channels. “This is critical to mitigate the economic, social and environmental impacts that will occur in all our communities if further action is not taken,” Harvie wrote. Last summer, the port authority announced the one-time funding towards what it said was a near-term dredging solution to support key Delta channels within the Fraser River communities, focusing on Ladner Harbour and Gunderson Slough. The port noted that for 10 years, and as a gesture of good will, it committed to providing a $7 million interim dredging solution to support the Fraser River communities. As the funding for the program has concluded, the VFPA is working with government to identify other sources of funding that will provide a longer-term solution to support dredging in the

local channels. A Delta report last year noted that preliminary annual cost estimates for dredging the priority local channels, based on hydrological studies provided by VFPA in 2020, has Delta at $900,000, Richmond at $575,000 and the channels up-river of Annacis Island at $250,000. Another report warned that without regular maintenance dredging, the river will soon revert back to the same condition that prompted remedial efforts to restore local channel navigability. Back in 2012, Delta entered into a joint $10-million funding program with the province, the port authority and the City of Richmond to dredge channels around Ladner and Steveston. There was no commitment at the time to come up with an ongoing maintenance program once the money was spent.

Delta voicing opposition to new fed boundaries SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta residents need to know about major changes proposed for their federal electoral boundaries and speak out in opposition. That was the consensus at city council on May 16 during discussion on a staff report regarding changes that could see the riding carved into three with areas lumped into Richmond and Surrey. Agreeing to have the city raise awareness and encourage people to attend an upcoming public hearing in South Delta, councillors described the proposal as a “massacring of the lines” which will leave part of Delta in the “extreme minority” if the changes go ahead. Council agreed to write to the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission to convey Delta’s opposition and request that Delta remain as a single electoral district. In 2015, federal electoral boundaries in B.C. were reconfigured to combine both North Delta and South Delta into one Delta riding. Previously, the municipality was split with the ridings of DeltaRichmond East and Newton-North Delta. However, Delta could once again be divided as the com-

mission is proposing a new riding called Delta that would see Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta below 72 Avenue join part of Surrey, extending all the way to King George Highway. Another part of North Delta would be lumped into Surrey as part of a Surrey riding, while another area of North Delta and the River House area of Ladner would join a newly reconfigured Richmond East. “These proposed changes would, once again, result in in the community of Delta being fragmented in terms of electoral representation. Large sections of the North Delta population will be represented by elected officials in Richmond and Surrey, and Delta’s MP would also have to represent a large area of west Surrey. Not only would this situation be confusing for Delta voters, it would serve to undermine Delta’s identity as a single, united community,” the Delta staff report notes. Saying it’s part of a mandated process of regular reviews to make sure there’s fairness, so that ridings with smaller populations don’t have more voting weight than those with more people, Justice Mary Saunders, chair of the threemember commission, recently told

the Optimist the changes are mainly in response to the significant, but uneven population growth. She said no one riding, including Delta, which on its own is fine, is singled out, but changes needed several ridings away can result in a domino effect. At Delta council last week, Mayor George Harvie, who said he spoke with Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie who was also opposed, noted he will speak at the hearing. Coun. Dylan Kruger said he’ll also be there to raise concerns. Council also agreed to request a public hearing take place in North Delta. The commission is holding 27 public hearings, in-person and virtual, to gather comments and feedback on the proposed boundaries and electoral district names. One of those will be held at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn on Thursday, June 9, starting at 7 p.m. Those wanting to make a presentation are asked to send the commission a notice no later than a week prior. For more information about the proposed electoral boundary changes, the public hearings or to make a presentation, check out: redistribution2022.ca.

Off-leash dog area to remain at Beach Grove Park SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The City of Delta is backing down from a plan to relocate an offleash dog area from a Tsawwassen park despite concerns from an adjoining school and parents. Council at its May 16 meeting agreed to hold off on its earlier approval to undertake community consultation on the design of a new enclosed off-leash dog area at Grauer Park to replace the existing off-leash area at Beach Grove Park. After complaints from dog owners, Mayor George Harvie and Coun. Dylan Kruger said the option of relocating the off-leash area to another park should be removed by council altogether. A new plan by staff was then to come forward to the Parks Recreation and Culture Commission.

In 2011, a western portion of Beach Grove Park, next to the Beach Grove Elementary playground, was designated as an offleash area. A number of concerns, including the safety of children, were raised in recent years about the proximity to the school and a lack of barriers. The boundaries of the leash-optional area were subsequently revised and a fence and gate were installed between the off-leash area and the playground. However, late last year parents raised more concerns. In a letter last month to the city, the Beach Grove Parent Advisory Council (PAC) noted the off-leash area has created continual concerns with dogs entering school grounds and creating an unsafe environment for kids using the only

available path to walk to school, since there is no barrier between the dog park and the path. A report to council noted staff reviewed options to provide a full enclosure of the off-leash area and found a number of challenges, most notably the negative impact to natural areas, which would see required space cleared to install a perimeter fence. The possibility of creating a full enclosure within the existing trails was also examined, however staff noted that would not eliminate problems when it came to the adjacent park. A new report to the commission recommended that community consultation take place for the creation of an off-leash enclosure and adjustment of the designated off-leash boundary at Beach Grove Park.

T

hree MPs and likely a major loss of direct representation is the scenario facing this community if new federal election boundaries are approved. The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for British Columbia has proposed a new electoral map for consideration at public hearings this spring and fall. On the table is a divided up Delta that would see Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta below 72 Avenue join part of Surrey, extending all the way to King George Highway. Another part of North Delta would be lumped into Surrey as part of a Surrey riding, while another area of North Delta and the River House area of Ladner would join a newly reconfigured Richmond East. With all due respect to the Commission, this is a horrible proposal. We all have chosen to live in Delta for a reason – we want to be a part of Delta and this wonderful community. I live in North Delta. I pay taxes in Delta and I care about the issues that affect me and my fellow Deltans. If I wanted to live in Richmond or Surrey I would have chosen to live in Richmond or Surrey. I want my representative in Ottawa to be from Delta and is someone who cares about Delta and its issues. Under this plan, we would have three MPs trying to serve the riding with parts of North Delta and Ladner under the watch of an MP elected in Surrey and Richmond. Do you think those MPs will care about what a few residents in Delta think? I doubt it. Recent letters to the editor and an online poll are very clear what many in Delta think of these proposed changes – they are not good or wanted. On June 9, at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, is the first of many public hearings on this subject. If you care about the future of Delta get out there and voice your concerns. It’s time to rally for Delta.

attended the “Achieving for Delta” (AFD) special announcement at Tsawwassen Springs on Tuesday night in which incumbent Mayor George Harvie introduced a full council and school trustee slate for this October’s municipal election. Council incumbents include Alicia Guichon and Dylan Kruger, who announced their candidacy last week. New council candidates include Danielle Boisvert who was a school trustee on the AFD slate last term. Other new council candidates include former parks commissioner Rod Binder, Jessie Dosanjh and Jennifer Johal. The AFD school trustee slate includes incumbents Erica Beard and Val Windsor who is joining a slate for her first time. Other trustee candidates include Nimmi Daula, Ammen Dhillon, Masako Gooch, Maury Kask and Joe Muego. candidates for mayor, council or trustee candidates thus far. The event was well attended by an enthusiastic group of people. Has it really been four years already? It would seem as though some of the major issues that face our communities are poised to move to the next level. There has been a lot of background work from committees and task forces related to the “Foundations for the Future” pillars over the past few years. Many of the issues contained within the Foundations for the Future platform are ready to be enacted on including moving forward with recommen-

dations within the housing action plan and the housing needs assessment. Housing is probably one of the most important issues, certainly in South Delta. According to a press release, Harvie, plans to offer a platform that will “focus on low taxes, safer communities, keeping families and seniors together, and achieving investment for a more liveable and climate-resilient Delta.” Other issues that will test our incoming politicians include the Ladner Village renewal, climate action and farmland protection, diking, zoning and a host of other issues in the diverse landscapes of Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta. It will be interesting to see if other candidates come to the table in the coming weeks and months and whether their platforms will garner enthusiasm from the voting public. Although the election is still months away, I would encourage citizens to pay attention to the issues and attend a public hearing or two in the hopes that we can make informed choices at the polls in October.

Let’s work for a quieter Delta

Editor: Here we go again. Citizens living in North and South Delta as well as White Rock will remember that in 2008, YVR and Nav Canada announced route changes that sent many more planes over our communities. YVR and Nav Canada representatives were invited to a Delta council meeting in Tsawwassen to speak to council about these changes. The council chamber was packed with citizens loudly and vigorously objecting to the route

changes. The meeting was so animated that the YVR and Nav Canada representatives were spirited out of the back of the council chambers during a break in the proceedings. YVR and Nav Canada got the message and revised the flight routes. They also agreed to install the aircraft noise monitoring stations that Optimist reporter Sandor Gyarmati mentioned in his article a few weeks ago in the paper. Unfortunately, the noise has now returned and will get a lot worse

if we don’t take action. Residents should email Delta’s mayor and council (mayorharvie@delta. ca), Nav Canada (service@navcanada.ca) and YVR (noise@yvr.ca) to voice their objection to the flight route changes. Here is suggested wording: “I am experiencing an increase in the level of disruptive aircraft noise throughout the day and night. Please address this matter as soon as possible. Thank you.” Send emails out every time you hear disruptive aircraft noise. Ron Wasik

Thanks to Delta Hospital staff Editor: On behalf of Maureen McColl, her sisters, and their families, I would like to extend gratitude and appreciation for the doctors and staff at the Delta

Hospital. In particular, a big, thank-you goes to Dr. Ina Zhou, and Dr. Yusef, who were so caring and prompt with their accurate diagnoses that lead to a

speedier recovery. We will always be grateful to you both. Delta Hospital is lucky to have such caring and knowledgeable physicians. Karen Day

Thank you all for your kindness

Editor: On May 11 I had a very bad fall in front of Jarry’s. I did not get the names of those involved in helping me.

Two kind women helped up, one kind woman helped with stopping the bleeding and one kind gentleman from Jarry’s got a damp cloth

to help stop the bleeding and even offered to drive me home in Tsawwassen. I thank them all for their kindness. John Parry

Beach chairs were a kind gesture

Editor: Apparently, someone in Boundary Bay complained to the City of Delta about chairs on the beach as recently the city came and removed the chairs. Many good-hearted people are leaving chairs on the beach for the pur-

pose of the public to use them. How kind. I guess there are always a few members in our society who don’t believe in this kind of good-hearted mindset and they are obsessed with thinking about what is good for them only. I hope the shellfish

person who is responsible for this will rest easy not having to hear people sitting on the chairs having a good time and enjoying the surroundings. Knowing the nice beach people they will not get deterred by such naïve actions. Othmar Brunner

Fed boundary changes make no sense Editor: I was disappointed to read that the Boundaries Commission is planning to change our federal riding boundaries. Some Delta citizens will be represented by a Richmond MP, way across the tunnel. Others will be represented by

a Surrey MP. The rest of Delta will include parts of Delta and parts of Surrey. This is going to be a “miss-mash.” Keeping Delta intact would mean that we would all be represented by our own MP. That person would continue to work with all Deltans,

one city council, school board, Chamber of Commerce etc., rather than two. One MP can deal with all of Delta’s issues, while still being aware of how we fit in with our neighbours. Mary Begin

Open an RDSP and access up to $90K in gov’t incentives Jeffrey Greenfeld, CFP®, RIS, EPC Investment Advisor, iA Private Wealth Inc. I recently met with a new client to complete a 2021 personal tax return where he mentioned his disability tax credit (DTC) for his disability. This prompted me to ask if he had started thinking about his long-term financial plan and whether he had a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). He did not. John was 29 years old, a CDN resident, and had a valid SIN. Therefore, he qualified to be the beneficiary of an RDSP. I immediately started the paperwork to open an RDSP, putting him in the driver’s seat towards financial stability. Based on his salary, and annual contributions of $1,500, John will be able to earn the maximum annual grant of $3,500 through the Canada Disability Savings Grant. Since he is starting early, he will be able to reach the lifetime maximum of $70,000 in grants. The Canada Disability Savings Bond lifetime maximum adds another $20,000, providing John a total of $90,000 in grants over his lifetime! For Canadians with disabilities, an RDSP is an effective way to build long-term financial security through: • Valuable government incentives • Tax-free growth from earnings which money remains in the plan • Lump-sum and regular payments • Virtually no effect on most federal gov’t benefits If someone opens an RDSP later in life than John, they are eligible to catch up on grants and bonds. RESP and RRSP rollovers are also available if eligible. If you have a disability, open an RDSP and take advantage of government incentives to kick-start your retirement!

Delta backyard chicken owners on the lookout for bird flu SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta residents who are keeping their own backyard chickens have been notified to be on the lookout for signs of avian influenza. That’s according to a Delta staff report in a recent response to a letter of concern to council about the spreading bird flu virus in B.C. and how the keeping of chickens in residential areas may increase the risk of transmission. The province in recent weeks announced the first case of avian influenza in a poultry flock and subsequent cases have since been reported. Several small or backyard flocks have also contracted the virus including ones in Kelowna, Richmond, Armstrong and the central Kootenays. Wild birds have also tested positive for H5 strains of avian influenza. The Delta staff response notes that upon notification of an eagle testing positive at Vancouver’s Stanley Park, the Delta Community Animal Shelter proactively emailed those keeping backyard chick-

The city also has a webpage with information for hen owners on how to prevent and detect disease in backyard flocks. See more at: delta.ca. Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Registering through the province’s Premises ID Program will assist with tracking of birds during any disease outbreaks. The ministry says owners of small or backyard flocks are urged to continue to be vigilant and have appropriate preventative measures in place. Those measures include eliminating or reducing opportunities for poultry to encounter wild birds, reducing human access to the flock, as well as increased

cleaning, disinfection and sanitization of all things including clothing and footwear when entering areas where flocks are housed. Last summer, Delta council gave final approval for a bylaw amendment to permit residents to have backyard chickens in singlefamily neighbourhoods. It’s a pilot project and the city will review the program later this year. The bylaw amendment removed a previous requirement of properties having chickens being located next to agriculturally-zoned properties. No minimum lot size is required. Roosters are prohibited and the number of hens permitted on a property is restricted to four. The bylaw also requires food and manure to be removed to reduce smell and pest impacts. Coops and runs are limited to a maximum of 108-square-feet of combined indoor and outdoor space. Chickens are also to be kept for personal use and shall not be kept for the purposes of selling meat, eggs or other products.

New sign eyed for Delta’s Boundary Bay SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Boundary Bay Village could be getting a new community sign. City council at its May 16th meeting endorsed starting a neighbourhood consultation to see what residents think about a proposed sign and its location at the entrance to the community.

There had been a community entrance sign that was situated off Boundary Bay Road, across from the Monterra development, but it was removed about a decade ago. A Delta staff report notes there is now community interest in reestablishing a sign in a new location on the south side of 3 Avenue, within city park reserve

lands. The report notes local residents have brought forward a design which reflects the original sign graphics and are seeking the support of the city in designing and constructing the new sign. Area residents have advised city staff that they would be seeking community financial support to offset a portion of the costs.

A feedback form will be mailed out to local residents and they will have until June 10 to reply. Once that community feedback is received, Delta staff will report back to council.

Delta to comment further on Metro’s long-term plan SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The City of Delta will have another say on Metro Vancouver’s vision for the community. Metro 2050 is to replace Metro Vancouver 2040: Shaping our Future and is intended to be a long-term guide for land use decisions in the region. Council recently received a letter from Metro Board Chair Sav Dhaliwal stating that a final draft of the regional district’s strategic plan has been referred back to affected jurisdictions following a public hearing last month. Communities were given 60 days to approve and sign off on the document, or indicate why they are opposed. If a local government fails to act within the period for acceptance, it is deemed to have accepted the proposed regional growth strategy,

he explained. “Metro 2050 introduces important new and enhanced policies that will help Metro Vancouver, member jurisdictions, TransLink, and other parties address the significant challenges facing this region - including climate change, housing affordability, equity, and resilience - and will advance our shared vision for a sustainable, prosperous, and livable region,” wrote Dhaliwal. Regional district staff will be reporting to the Metro Vancouver Board at its July 29 meeting on the status of affected local government acceptances. While Delta staff will bring back a report to council on the Metro referral, a previous report on the proposed strategy notes that, overall, Metro 2050 is an appropriate plan for the region, bearing in mind the uniqueness of Delta’s geogra-

phy and demographic makeup. However, the city also outlined a series of concerns including the future of agricultural lands. The report noted that, given the importance of agricultural lands to Delta and the region as a whole, the revised definition of agricultural lands in Metro 2050 appears to open possibilities around the use of agricultural land that previously did not exist. “In addition, Metro 2050 has removed the emphasis on food production stipulation for agricultural land, which should be carefully considered in the context of the use of agricultural lands for cannabis production and the need for regional food security,” the report notes. The report also warns the strategies around trade-oriented lands in Metro 2050 pose potential land use conflicts

Delta council has been asked to provide more comment on Metro Vancouver`s long-term plan for land use decisions. related to agricultural and environmentally sensitive lands in a municipality like Delta. “Metro 2050 should also recognize challenges to the protection of Delta’s agricultural and environmentally sensitive lands associated with the anticipated Port expansion. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has stated that, if approved, Roberts Bank Terminal 2 will require 1,000 ha

(2,500 ac) of developable industrial land close to the terminal for portrelated industry.” The Delta report also notes, among other issues, that Metro 2050 includes a goal to increase the area of lands protected for nature from 40 percent to 50 percent of the region’s land base by 2050. Delta lacks comparable ecosystem protection targets to increase pro-

tected land by 10 percent, so staff will review the potential effect of implementing such a target. “However, as the home to the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area covering over 2,300 ha (5,600 ac), a considerable amount of Delta’s land is already protected and meeting the Metro 2050 goal for an increase in protected lands may therefore be challenging,” the report adds.

Delta park to get upgraded tennis courts but no pickleball SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Upgraded tennis courts will be coming to Pebble Hill Park, but you can forget about pickleball. Delta council recently

endorsed a staff recommendation to enter into a cost-sharing agreement with the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) to replace the existing tennis courts at the park. The project is part

of the city’s overall multi-year Sport Court Improvement Program, which identified an opportunity to create nine dedicated pickleball courts and four dedicated tennis courts on top of Pebble Hill Reservoir

Units 1 and 2. It was envisioned the project would be done in cooperation with the GVWD, which was planning upgrades to the reservoir units. Following public consultation earlier this year,

recommendations were approved to develop an agreement with the GVWD for the replacement of the existing tennis courts, but to not proceed with the proposed pickleball courts. During council’s discussion at their April 25 meeting, Mayor George Harvie said the decision was made following consultation with area residents and concerns raised about the noise from pickleball play. The four tennis courts at Pebble Hill Reservoir are scheduled to be completed in 2023.

The city’s available budget for the project is set at $50,000. The city is also looking into establishing an offleash dog area at Pebble Hill Park. Harvie and city manager Sean McGill, during council’s discussion, both said a number of other concerns about the site were identified by area residents, including drainage and parking. While there is no overall Pebble Hill Park master plan, they said all the concerns will be addressed in an upcoming report to council.

Minor injuries after vehicle plunges into Fraser River

Element SUV was travelling westbound when it left the road and slammed through concrete barricades before hitting rocks along the shore and flipping on to its roof in the water. “Luckily, Delta firefighters were able to get the driver out of vehicle before it became submerged,” said MacKichan. “He was then transported to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.” Delta Police had River Road blocked for hours while they investigated and had the vehicle towed out of the river. -Ian Jacques

Season finale for Sidekick Players

Jonas and Barry in the Home runs June 2 to 25 at Tsawwassen Arts Centre Local theatre group Sidekick Players brings the curtain down on its 25th season in June with another offering from playwright Norm Foster. Jonas and Barry in the Home runs June 2 to 25 at Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Foster’s quick wit is strong in this lighthearted buddy comedy about living life to its fullest. “I guarantee you will laugh. That’s right, I guarantee it. Now, that’s not a money back guarantee. I’m a playwright not a fool,” states Foster. Barry (Pat McDermott) is annoyed that he’s already living in a seniors’ home at 67, but it’s worth it to live near his daughter, Rosie (Sarah Greene). Rosie, who works at the home, brought him in so he wouldn’t be alone in case he has a heart attack like his father, brother, and uncle did before they were 65, so, Barry spends his time shuffling around in his slippers, taking naps, and having dinner with Rosie, and that’s good enough for him. But Barry doesn’t get to revel in the quiet for long. Enter the loquacious and flirtatious Jonas, who wrote one hit song 37 years ago. Jonas (Ken Fynn) likes to indulge in the finer

things in life, like decadent dates and nice clothes, and he sees Barry the curmudgeon as a fixer upper. As they bicker and bond over women, sports, and family values, Jonas and Barry must learn to open up and face how to keep living their lives. “We are pleased to welcome newcomer, Ken Fynn and welcome back Pat McDermott and Sarah Greene,” said director Carroll Lefebvre. “Ken resides in Chilliwack and Pat in Abbotsford, and they have been travelling back-and-forth because they love these characters and the play. The three actors have amazing chemistry and it’s hard to think of them as anything but Jonas, Barry and Rosie.” Lefebvre is also pleased to welcome back Margaret Currivan as her assistant. Evening performances are on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:30 p.m.) and three matinees on June 5, 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. (doors open at 1:30 p.m.) Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors. Grammy Award winning violinist performing on Monday at South Delta Baptist Church

The Vancouver Chamber Music Society’s season finale features Grammy, Gramaphone and Juno Award winning James Ehnes on Monday, May 30 at the South Delta Baptist Church. He will be performing wellknown piano trios by Tchaikovsky and Dvorak alongside Bion Tsang and Adam Neiman for this 7:30 p.m. show. Gifted with a rare combination of stunning virtuosity, serene lyricism and an unfaltering musicality, Ehnes has firmly established himself as one of the most sought-after artists on the international stage. Ehnes is a favourite guest of many of the world’s most respected conductors including Ashkenazy, Alsop, Sir Andrew

James Ehnes Davis, Denève, Elder, Ivan Fischer, Gardner, Paavo Järvi, Mena, Noseda, Robertson and Runnicles. Ehnes’s long list of orchestras includes, amongst others, the Boston, Chicago,

London, NHK and Vienna Symphony Orchestras, the Los Angeles, New York, Munich and Czech Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Cleveland, Philadelphia, Philharmonia and DSO Berlin orchestras. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and in 2010 was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. Tsang has been internationally recognized as one of the outstanding instrumentalists of his generation. At age 11, he made his professional debut with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic. He’s been featured on America Online as CultureFinder’s “Star Find of the Week,” on the Internet Cello Society as “Artist of the Month,”

and most recently in print in the book 21st-Century Cellists. Neiman has been universally acclaimed as a thoughtprovoking, charismatic, and highly virtuosic performer. He is hailed as one of today’s preeminent American classical pianists. Neiman’s reputation as a chamber musician is supported by his history as a founding member of the Corinthian Trio and a member of Trio Solisti with whom he capped his tenure with a performance of the complete chamber music of Brahms at Carnegie Hall. Tickets are $40 for adults, $20 for students available online at: vancouverchambermusic.com/ ehnes-tsang-neiman or by phone at 604-359-9738.

Lifestyles Tsawwassen playwright premier’s at Vancouver festival this week Tsawwassen-raised writer and artist Shelby Satterthwaite is set to premiere her new play Light Rapid Transit this week. Produced by Delta-based Coffeehouse Theatre and directed by Carly Pokoradi, Light Rapid Transit is presented by Upintheair Theatre as part of the 2022 rEvolver Festival. There will be four performances from Thursday to Sunday at the Cultch Historic Theatre in Vancouver. In Light Rapid Transit, six friends and strangers navigate being in transit, physically and emotionally. Taking place entirely on the Vancouver Expo Line, their lives intertwine and are changed irreversibly by one another through acts as simple as choosing a seat. Light Rapid Transit itself evolved from a random act of generosity on the SkyTrain: as Satterthwaite was getting off the train, a stranger gave her a bouquet of flowers and requested that she share them with anyone she crossed paths with. During the past four years, that encounter developed into a play about connection and interdependence. Light Rapid Transit is Coffeehouse Theatre’s fifth production, and its first

in-person event since 2019. It’s a big move for the young company, being the first time they are producing outside of Delta and in collaboration with another company. The cast and crew is a talented mix of artists, some of whom have been attached to Light Rapid Transit for multiple years. The cast includes Bruce Hill, Hunter Golden, Nyx Debogorski, Amelia Brooker, Sarah Zaiter, and Jessica Wong. In addition to Pokoradi, the play features lighting design by Ben Pilger, sound design by Miriam Dumitra, original music by Noah Franche-Nolan, and dramaturgy by Santana Berryman. The team is rounded out by several SDSS Equinox Theatre alumni: stage manager Amy Bell, producers Camryn Chew and Kate Chubbs, and of course playwright/ assistant director Satterthwaite. Individual tickets and festival passes can be purchased through the Cultch box office online at tickets.thecultch. com and by phone at 604-251-1363. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Cultch (1895 Venables St, Vancouver), Monday to Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and one hour prior to all performances.

General Excellence awards are divided by circulation category, so similar-sized newspapers with similar populations and staffing levels compete against each other. The other pinnacle of the evening is the Edgar Dunning Award for Dedication and Service to the Community NewsMedia Industry. This year’s award went to Penny Sakamoto of Black Press, who served the community news-media industry for 30 years in a variety of leadership positions, including as publisher of newspapers in Squamish, Revelstoke, Salt Spring Island, Victoria, Oak Bay, Saanich and Sidney, and as a two-time president of the BCYCNA.

The process of preparing pages to be press printing – the same technology that Johannes Gutenberg used when he created printed has also transformed radically over the first printing press in the 15th century. the years. From setting manual type in frames 100 years ago to linotype machines, With that simple but effective technolowhich created whole lines of text from hot gy, the local newspaper was also often the lead, to phototypesetting (projecting chartown job printer, printing flyers, forms, acters and images onto film) and finally to business cards and stationery for local computer typesetting using programs like businesses and residents. Adobe InDesign, the process has become Offset printing (also known as offset extremely streamlined. lithography or litho) revolutionized the Adding pictures to print has also beprinting industry in the 20th century. come radically different as technology Printing plates (originally made from advanced. with digital photography, the whole process from can now happen in seconds. Even getting the files to the press has advanced. As late as the 1990s, newspapers had to print out and paste individual pieces of copy, ads and photos together onto sheets (called flats) and drive the flats to a printing press where they would be photographed and turned into printing plates. Now, ads, stories and photos can be made into press-ready pages entirely on a laptop computer and sent directly to the press using computer-to-plate technology, all of which speeds up the news-gathering pace. Now a community newspaper can cover a fire or a council meeting at 6 pm with the story and pictures in print just hours later – a process that used to take a full day or

even two. And as we move beyond print and into an increasingly digital world, remember we’ve been here for decades too. Community newspapers were also among the first websites found on the World Wide Web, as it was known in the 1990s, and have also been pioneers in using new social media platforms to distribute news to readers (community newspaper, of course, being the original social media). Today dozens of our members are using new digital tools to tell local stories, from video shows to podcasts and more. In short, innovation and adoption of new technology have been in our blood for 100 years – and will be for many more.

Embracing new life

While I will never claim to be a gardener in recent years, I have enjoyed square foot gardening. In my current apartment we do not have the ability to square foot garden, however we have been able to take over and call our own, one of several garden beds in the complex. Taking out and removing old overgrown rhododendrons has been particularly cathartic over the past year or two as I clear out the old, to make way for new plants including herbs, vegetables, and flowers to maintain a decent curb appeal to friend and neighbour. The new garden has become a conversation piece as many people within the apartment complex as well as surrounding neighbours stop, admire and monitor some of the changes that have taken place.

Minister’s Minute ROBIN RUDER CELIZ

ALL SAINTS ANGLICAN CHURCH

As with any landscaping project, there comes a point in the process where the old growth has been removed and what lies before is an open dirt patch void of beauty and without any clear sign of the new vegetation that is to come. But soon, before too long, new plants arrive, a new landscape design begins to take shape and the garden comes back to life.

As I contemplate these changes in my gardening and other landscaping projects, I cannot help but be reminded of the Easter Gospel. For those of us who follow the Christian Faith, death and resurrection is at our centre. Constantly we see all around us how aspects of our life come to their natural end in order to embrace the new life and opportunity that lies ahead. The changing of jobs, a new school, a new home are some of these changes. Within all these changes there comes that point where, like a garden, the old has passed and what lies before is a rugged dirt patch. This “dirt patch” becomes our clean slate full of potential. When we embrace this moment, soon our new life and opportunities begin to take shape. Embrace it.

After two long years, the community is ready to party again with the return of Ladner Pioneer May Days, providing a weekend full of fun and excitement at Memorial Park. The 126th edition of the fair, which takes place May 27-29, has been dark since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to some creativity, a virtual event was held a year ago but there is nothing quite like doing it in-person. It was in late March when the City of Delta gave the greenlight for this year’s fair. It’s been non-stop work since for a group of volunteers, most of them lifelong Ladner

Parents are saying ‘I can finally take my kids again’ or ‘I used to go when I was a kid and now my kids are old enough now.’ They want to make those same memories from their childhood.” This year’s theme is “Neighbours helping Neighbours,” recognizing and appreciating the local frontline workers over the past two years. good relationship with them.” The May Days committee was suddenly up against the clock as this year’s fair wasn’t given the greenlight to proceed until late March from the City of Delta. Fortunately, they came to an agreement with Shooting Star Amusements, another Metro Vancouver company based out of Mission. “They have come to our rescue,” said Scott. “So, we will have 15 rides, with five for the little ones, five family rides and five of what you would call the classic rides (such as The Zipper, Zero Gravity and Tilt-A-Whirl). There will be the midway games too and you’ll be able to get your mini-donuts.” Other rides listed on Shooting Star Amusements’ website includes Ferris Wheel, Bumper Cars, The

Families will notice some changes when they turn out in droves for the 126th edition of Ladner Mays this weekend. Opening night on Friday always brings huge crowds to the midway section of Memorial Park that includes rides, games and food favourites such as cotton candy. The fair has had a long-relationship with West Coast Amusements, however, the Chilliwack-

based company has hit a snag with finding enough employees and couldn’t commit this year. “They need 60 workers to run two separate carnivals with one going up north and the other staying down here,” explained May Days chair Jennifer Scott. “They were hoping to bring in some foreign workers but hit a snag with the Canadian government and couldn’t commit to us, so that was a bit of a disappointment as we had always had a

Avian Flu’s impact on OWL MARTINA VERSTEEG

O r p h a n e d Wi l d l i fe Re h a b i l i t a t i o n S o c i e t y

Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) receives close to 1,000 sick or injured birds of prey each year. Through the years OWL has returned more than 27,000 raptors to the wild. OWL’s goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native wild raptors, as well as educate the public on how to prevent injuries to wildlife. As you may have heard, the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI, or bird flu H5N1) is making the rounds again globally. In February we had a positive case in a Bald Eagle and immediately implemented new biosecurity measures. Unfortunately, since that first case, six more birds have arrived with the virus - five Bald Eagles and one Coopers Hawk - and we are awaiting results on four more Bald Eagles and a Peregrine Falcon. Two of the confirmed cases were from Delta. Sadly, in raptors, H5N1 has a 90 to 100 per cent mortality rate. Raptors pick up this disease from their food sources. Waterfowl are natural reservoirs for varieties of Avian Influenza yet are largely unaffected themselves and rarely show signs of the disease.

OWL staff have been busy dealing with cases of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. The OWL team of volunteers worked tirelessly to add and improve quarantine areas so each patient can safely quarantine during testing and treatment. As you can imagine, we are using a lot of personal protective equipment (PPE) and rely on donations to help with this unexpected cost, and allow us to remain open and accept patients who need us. Sadly, numerous comparable North America facilities have had to temporarily close due to the impact of the virus. To help stop the spread

of HPAI, please keep your chickens or pet birds out of yards where wild birds may congregate. Consider removing your bird feeders and baths for the time being, and plant bird friendly native plants for birds to forage on. If you find an injured raptor, please call us at 604-946-3171. Report dead wild birds to the Bird Mortality Hotline at 1-866-431-BIRD (2473). Editor`s note: Nature Notes is a monthly column produced by the Delta Naturalists Society and its community partners.

Every car washed, plant, book, home-baking, handcraft purchase, or café visit, will help raise funds earmarked to assist a refugee family coming to Delta from Ukraine. A raffle for two gift baskets, one food and the other toiletries, is another incentive. Hospital golf tourney sells out in record time

Century Group sponsors Delta Health Classic for eighth consecutive year Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation’s Century Group Delta Health Classic is back in person on June 23 in its 23rd year. Due to an overwhelming response from sponsors, this tournament is sold out. For more than 20 years, Delta’s business and community leaders have demonstrated their support for the Delta Hospital Campus of Care by sponsoring and attending the Foundation’s renowned annual golf tournament fundraiser. The Century Group Delta Health Classic is dedicated to improving

the health of all who live and work in Delta and the goal of this year’s tournament is to help the needs of Delta Hospital’s busy surgical services program. “We are pleased to continue our support of Delta Hospital as it is an important part of the health of our community,” says Sean Hodgins, President of Century Group. “Commitment to our community is at the very core of our company, and we are proud to be raising funds for Delta Hospital’s busy surgical department this year.” The Century Group Delta Health Classic is back to the pre-COVID days and includes a great day of golf, a hearty

lunch, the best of Delta restaurants and libations on-course, 19th Hole Reception, games and prizes, and lots of laughs set to this year’s Wild West theme. Participants will raise funds for Delta Hospital’s busy Surgical Services Department one of the busiest day surgery sites in the Fraser Health region. More than 7,900 surgeries are performed every year in three operating rooms and approximately 3,500 endoscopies in their Endoscopy Suite. “This is an especially exciting year for the Century Group Delta Health Classic. We are back in person and back to our one-day

format with lots of exciting things happening on course,” says Lisa Hoglund, Executive Director, Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “We are appreciative of Century Group’s continued and generous support as well as our other longstanding and new sponsors who are joining us for this year’s sold out tournament.” Even though the inperson event is sold out, the community can still participate in the Century Group Delta Health Classic by taking part in their online auction. LIVING THE GOOD LIFE

Safety upgrades for seniors’ homes Many seniors want to spend as long as possible residing in the comforts of their own homes, but getting older often comes with certain deficits that may not make current living situations the safest for seniors. Certain adaptations may be necessary if seniors want to stay in their homes, particularly in older homes that have not recently been renovated. Create zero-threshold entryways Zero-threshold entryways, also known as flush entries, do not require crossing a lip or any raised barrier. They can appear on doorways and showers and make it easy for people who have mobility issues, as well as those using scooters,

walkers and wheelchairs, to move about unencumbered. Clear clutter/move obstructions One inexpensive modification is to remove extraneous furniture and accessories. Such a change widens walking spaces in a room and accommodates walkers and wheelchairs. In addition, furniture can be pushed to the room’s perimeter to make moving around easier. It’s also important to remove area rugs, as they’re often tripping hazards. Install grab rails and supports Minimizing falls could come down to providing support in key rooms of a home. Adding grab rails in the bathroom near the toilet and in

Invest in a stairlift Single-story homes are preferable for growing older gracefully, but many seniors live in multi-story homes.

A stairlift makes a multi-floor home more accessible, and easier to traverse staircases and reduce the risk for falls. These suggestions are

just a few of the many home modifications that can help seniors safely age in place. Consider smart lighting Motion-activated or darkness-activated lighting switches and fixtures can automatically turn on lights, thereby improving visibility. Also, rocker light switches are easier to maneuver than standard toggles. Change knobs to levers This is an easy modification. Levers are much easier for individuals with arthritis or persons who lack dexterity in their hands. Everything from doorknobs to faucet knobs can be replaced with levers. -Metro Creative

Spring and summer fun for active seniors Seniors may have more time for leisure and recreation than working adults, and the summer months provide ample opportunities to get active. After months of chilly temperatures, seniors in various parts of the country may be eager to get outdoors and enjoy some fun in the sun. The following are some good starting points. *Join or start a walking club. Walking is a great way to stay in shape and work the mind as well. View new sights along the way by changing the route each time you go. Walking with friends can pass the time and provide the motivation to keep going. * Catch a sporting event. Attending a sporting event can be an

entertaining way to spend several hours, and that includes amateur and recreational sports. Catch a grandchild’s swim meet or a baseball game for an action-packed way to connect with loved ones and get out. *Take a fishing charter. Casting a rod from a dock or pier is perfectly acceptable, but securing a spot on a fishing charter is a great way to spend hours out on the water enjoying the scenery and the sport of fishing. Plus, there’s the added benefit of enjoying the fruits of your labors by cooking the day’s catch for dinner once you arrive home. *Be a tourist. Many cities and towns have their own tourism boards and showcase interesting spots that have historical

significance or appeal to other interests. Be a tourist for the day - even in an area with which you are familiar. Hop on a trolley or sightseeing bus to view the town as an outsider. *Spend time swimming. Swimming is a

low-impact activity that can work the body in many different ways. Devote time to doing a few laps in the pool. Or make a day of going to a lake or another body of water to wade out and enjoy some strokes in nature. Stick to swim-

ming areas that are monitored by lifeguards for optimal safety. Tend to a garden. Gardening is a great form of light exercise that can produce rewarding results. If you don’t have a garden or enough space for one at home,

many neighborhoods have community gardens in which you can secure a plot. *Visit a fair or farmer’s market. The warm weather months are a peak time for outdoor activities, including various community fairs and farmer’s markets. Chances are you can find a farmer’s market nearby most days of the week, but especially on the weekend. A town market or state fair is a great way to get out and walk, play games of chance or enjoy some live entertainment. Check your community calendar for local events. Active seniors can embrace long, warm summer days to enjoy plenty of time away from home. -Metro Creative

B.C. seniors homeowner tax deferral program now open B.C. homeowners 55 years and older can now apply to defer this year’s property tax payments through a provincial program. B.C. Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie said the property tax deferral program could act as a lifeline for lower-income seniors — if they are aware of it. “Through this program, the province will pay the property tax to local government on behalf of the homeowner and save some seniors thousands of dollars each year,” she said in a statement. Mackenzie said her office recently conducted a survey of low-income seniors and found that while almost half were

homeowners, less than 15 per cent of those surveyed used the program despite struggling to pay other household expenses. The window to apply for program coverage runs until Dec. 31. Local government tax notices contain property information required to complete the online application process. Seniors are advised that applying for the program early could help in avoiding missed payment penalties that could be levied by local governments if property taxes aren’t paid by the July 4 deadline. The province also encourages homeowners to use the eTaxBC application to view the

status of their application well in advance of the tax deadline to help ensure they don’t face any late penalties. The Monitoring Seniors Services 2021 report from the Office of the Seniors Advocate shows that 65,505 B.C. seniors deferred their property taxes in 202021. The average homeowner deferred $4,297 in 2020-21 and paid only $51.56 in interest using the deferral program. That report also showed that while the value of deferred taxes under the program is growing each year, there were 15 per cent fewer new users in 2020-21 compared to the previous year. -Glacier Media

Sun Devils crowned South Fraser champs

Grace Grannary and the South Delta Sun Devils defeated Richmond’s McMath 4-2 en route to winning the South Fraser AAA Championship. Provincials are next week in Cloverdale.

The South Delta Sun Devils are headed to their record-setting 19th consecutive provincial tournament and they will have plenty of momentum behind them. The senior girls soccer team captured the inaugural South Fraser AAA Championship with a 3-0 win over Fraser Heights last Thursday in Richmond. The road to the title included two earlier victories and South Delta outscoring its opponents 14-2 in the process. Quick starts were the theme to the impressive run. The Sun Devils jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead in their 4-2 semi-final home field win on May 16 over the McMath Wildcats, then took a 2-0 advantage into the interval of the championship game. Fraser Heights and McMath took perfect records into both matches. “We’ve got a lot of pace and

we have been able to help give them a focus on here’s the players we need to attack or here’s what we want to do,” said SDSS co-coach Brent Sweeney. “We’ve got some attacking options going forward so, if the girls can create a turnover, they smell blood. They can also get into really good positions and create stuff. That’s been our key from day one. It’s something we have always liked to say to our teams is turn it on right from the start and these girls have been fantastic all year in doing it.” The Sun Devils opened their campaign by reaching the final of a pair of pre-season tournaments, losing in penalty kicks each time. Now, with an unbeaten run in league and zone playoffs, a podium finish should be in reach at the B.C. AAA Championships, slated for June 2 to 4 at the Cloverdale Athletic Park.

Field hockey standout back on home turf

Sara McManus and national team hosting camp at Winskill Park ahead of World Cup trip MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Sara McManus will be back on home turf this weekend as she prepares to add at least two more chapters this summer to her decorated international field hockey career. The 28-year-old defender from Tsawwassen and her Canadian teammates will be running a camp on Sunday at Winskill Park. For $25, players U11 to U18 will get to learn skills and tips from the country’s top players. The camp’s proceeds will help Canada’s expenses to attend the upcoming 2022 World Cup in Spain and the

Netherlands — July 1 to 7. The team will then head to Birmingham, England for the Commonwealth Games, starting July 28. “We came out and did a coaching session last year around the same time and the kids were just awesome,” said McManus. “We’ve now started these camps in the Lower Mainland. We had one in West Van last week and another one coming up in Vancouver as well. “It’s just been like a really great way to connect with the communities that we grew up in and came from. We get to have some have fun with the kids and then it’s a little bit of

a fundraiser as well for us as we’re trying to reduce our levy for the World Cup.” Having made her national team debut at just 18, the South Delta Secondary graduate ranks fifth all-time in appearances for Canada with 187 international caps. Her outstanding run very well could have ended nearly 30 months ago when Canada lost a heartbreaking 2020 Olympic qualifying series to Ireland. The pandemic would soon put everything on pause anyways. McManus resumed training then learned three World Cup berths would be on the line at the 2021 Pan American Championships.

Canada had not qualified for the World Cup since 1992. “It’s usually just like, the top one or two teams that go so I was like, okay, that could happen and it was like a year out and I can do this for another year,” said McManus. Canada came through with a 1-0 victory over the United States in the bronze medal game. Since that big win in Chile last year, the national team has been based in Vancouver for training. Needing a flexible job, McManus was working at the Prado Cafe in the new Southlands community in Boundary Bay before transferring to their Fraser Street loca-

tion to make commuting to practice in West Van easier. It will be sometime later this year when she will decide if her career will extend beyond the summer and take another run at the Olympics which are two years out in Paris. “Right now, I’m just so excited for this summer with the World Cup and Commonwealth Games. I’ll probably end up making a decision later on. But you know, Olympics have always been the goal and it’s hard to just let that go,” she added. Delta softball players sign with schools MARK BOOTH

Four homegrown players with the Delta Heat 2004A girls fastpitch team will be continue their careers next fall at B.C. university and college programs. Kennedy Ainge, Taylor Bowles, Clare VanSpall and Cheyenne Simicak have all committed to their respective schools, much to the delight of proud head coach Chris Ainge. “All these girls are like bonus kids to me, just built an incredible relationship with all of them and all come from great families,” said Ainge. Simicak, a Grade 12 student at Burnsview Secondary, is heading to UBC Okanagan where she will study Health and Exercise Sciences while being a middle infielder and bringing a consistent bat to the softball field. “Cheyenne played a couple years for me then left as the commitment was tough as she

is a also provincial girls baseball player before coming back to the Heat for her graduating year. I’m thrilled to have her back,” said Ainge. His daughter Kennedy is

continuing the Delta tradition by heading to Point Grey to play for the UBC Thunderbirds under Tsawwassen resident Gord Collings. The T-Birds current roster also features a num-

ber of Delta players. Kennedy is also going to the same school where her uncle Terry Ainge helpedthe UBC football team win the Vanier Cup back in 1986. The catcher

has led the Heat in hitting the past four seasons, averaging .360. Kennedy is a multi-sport athlete that previously thrived on the baseball diamond and also played volleyball, basketball and soccer at the high school level. She will be studying nursing at UBC. Bowles and VanSpall will be joining the Douglas College Royals. “Taylor possesses power you don’t see too often, is a great defensive first baseman and will be a huge part of the Royals’ success,” said Ainge. “Clare plays third base and is our leadoff hitter. The Royals are getting a natural leader and a great player on both sides of the ball. Bowles, who is also a competitive curler who won the provincial high school championship at Sands, will be studying psychology and criminology. VanSpall, who will be studying psychology, has also earned a $20,000 academic scholarship.

Derek passed away peacefully at Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, B.C.

BLONDAL, Thomas Eldon

June 19, 1932 - April 30, 2022 Tom was predeceased by sisters Sally (Sadie), Marie and brother Bjorn. His wife Lyn and their four children survived him: Tony, Theresa Bruce (Jim), Paul (Michelle) and Chris (JoJo). Tom was a grandfather to Agust and Calen and great grandfather to Silas and Rayna. To Tom, despite being a successful businessman and working very hard to accomplish his career goals, his family was his greatest achievement. Tom’s family meant the world to him and he was always there for them with a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on or a cheer of support. Tom was stoic in his manner but had a big heart and a wry sense of humour. Tom was fascinated with his Icelandic heritage and very proud to be a Canadian.

He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife Carol Haldane (nee Sutherland) after 45 years together, brother Robin Haldane (Isobel), nieces and nephews Kim, Stephen and Tanya and many great nieces, nephews and cousins in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.

God saw you getting tired And whispered ‘come with me’ You tried so hard to stay with us Your fight was all in vain God took you in His loving arms And saved you from the pain We never lose the ones we love For even when they are gone Within the hearts of those that care Their memory lingers on As per Derek’s request, there will be Cremation entrusted to Vancouver Services and Crematorium. Donations gratefully accepted by the BC Cancer The BC Heart and Stroke Foundation or your choice.

WALLACE, Diane Leslie September 25, 1951 − February 4, 2022 Diane died suddenly and unexpectedly of heart failure at age 70. Diane leaves her mother, Joan, still thriving at age 94, and her brother James (Susan Delaval). Diane was predeceased by her father Daniel in 2019. Diane’s first love was theatre, which she studied at the University of British Columbia and York University in Toronto. Her first acting experience was in a student production of Arthur Miller’s ’The Crucible,’ in which she played the youngest daughter. She then went on to work in the costume department at the Banff School of Fine Arts and travelled with the Shaw Festival on a tour from Niagara−on−the−Lake to the Northeastern United States. Diane soon realized that theatre was an uncertain way of life and decided instead to use her keen intellect and prodigious memory as a court reporter (Verbatim Method). As such, Diane travelled across Canada reporting on human rights hearings held by the Canadian Human Rights Commission. One of her more interesting assignments was to cover the first sitting of the newly elected territorial government of the Northwest Territories in Yellowknife.

Tom was a kindhearted man who loved animals of all kinds. He frequently would volunteer at bird rescue centers and donate to animal rights charities. He loathed cruelty of any kind. Tom always tried to instill a sense of fairness, kindness and love of animals to his family and friends.

Tom was a highly respected businessman amongst his colleagues, peers and acquaintances alike. Starting his career in Calgary, Alberta with Steel Brothers in the early 1960’s he worked his way up the ladder and in 1985 Tom and some associates purchased the company. Steel Brothers became “Steels Industrial Products”. Under Tom’s leadership Steels Industrial Products was a highly respected company in the industry. Steels was sold in 1992 and Tom retired at the age of 65. He spent his remaining years focusing on family, friends, pets, the occasional round of golf and enjoying life as he knew it.

Please join us on Sunday June 12, 2022, from 12:00pm − 4:00pm as we celebrate Reg’s life. Tsawwassen Springs, 5133 Springs Blvd, Delta, BC, V4M 0A6.

He was predeceased by his brother Les Haldane. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1953, living in Ontario and eventually British Columbia.

Heartfelt thanks go out to the staff at the Irene Thomas Hospice for their extraordinary care and compassion in taking care of Derek.

Celebration of Life Announcement for Reginald Titus June 17, 1930 − December 23, 2020

RELF, Gerald Albert October 19, 1930 − May 20, 2022 Predeceased by his wife, Christine, in 2011, Gerry will be dearly missed by his family in Canada − Cheryl, Paul, Stephen and Carolle, along with his niece in England, Christine. Many thanks to the staff of KinVillage West Court Care Home for their support and care of Gerry over the past few years.

After many years of travel for work, she settled into her Toronto apartment full time and reported on hearings of the Toronto City Council. On retirement, she was back in her Tsawwassen family home near Vancouver, where she became an active member of the University Women’s Club of South Delta.

Help us invest in their future

We cannot do this without you, as every donation helps. KidSport Delta is a community chapter of KidSport Canada. Every dollar raised in Delta stays in Delta. Your support will help provide a local child the opportunity to experience a season of sport. We provide grants to help cover the costs of registration fees so that all kids aged 18 and under in Delta can play a season of sport. Our chapter accepts applications and administers grants of up to $500 per child per calendar year, for kids who live in Delta. We want to be ready to help all children who otherwise would not be able to participate in Sports. You can give by donating at the link below or mail a cheque:

https://kidsportcanada.ca/british-columbia/delta/deltagiftofsport/ Average cost for kids to participate in Sports each year: Swim Club from $500 Cheer from $500 Football from $225 & up Volleyball from $450 Gymnastics from $250 & up Equestrian from $500 Martial Arts / Karate from $500
