The South Delta Sun Devils sure know how to make up for lost time. With the B.C. AAA Girls Soccer Championships resuming after a twoyear COVID pause, the Sun Devils captured their second provincial banner in school history with a dramatic 3-2 overtime win over Richmond’s McMath Wildcats in a steady downpour on Friday at Cloverdale Athletic Park. The Sun Devils showed their resiliency to twice battle back from one goal deficits to pull out the victory, capped by Gemma Dumas’ go-ahead tally in the first overtime half. It was a script similar to Thursday’s semi-final that saw South Delta rally for a 2-1 win over Argyle, also in extra time. “There were times this season where the girls had to dig deep and they always did it with the belief in their football and themselves,” said Sun Devils co-coach Brent Sweeney. “They just have the resiliency to not hang their heads and they did that twice today.” South Delta’s roster featured four Grade 12 players who all have had significant roles with the team since Grade 8. Teila Noble, Brianna Jassmann, Jane McDonald and Kate McDonald were named co-captains and did they ever deliver. The University of Calgary bound Jassmann was named the tournament’s MVP having led her team in scoring, including a pair of goals in the semi-

athletics that also includes their three football standout brothers. “We never quit. Anytime we’re down, everyone’s spirits are always up in such a positive environment. It’s honestly insane,” said Noble who will pass on post-secondary playing opportunities to study medicine. “Everyone’s just hyping each other up. There’s never like a negative moment in our team. “I knew back in Grade 8 there is going to be a year during my time in high school that we’re going to win it and we finally did in my senior year. It’s so amazing.” The Sun Devils other provincial title came back in 2008. They have made it to the gold medal game on four occasions and each time Stephen Burns and Sweeney have been on the sidelines for what has been an incredible run for the longtime SDSS teachers. “It feels as good as 2008 and maybe a little better just from the sense that we haven’t had football for two years and to come back and win it, especially for our Grade 12s. I’m thrilled for them,” said Burns. Lucy McCart, who made some key saves in both playoff wins, was recognized for her strong play by being named the tournament’s top goalie. The rest of the team includes: Kayla Wicks, Nikki Long, Madi Dier, Tomke Bauer, Julia Fechter, Eva Unger, Grace Grannery, Madi Dahl, Lily Yesowick, Angelina Burtini, Rachel Rosser, Mackenzie Campbell and Isabella Burtini.

City of Delta kicks off Pride Month with flag raising ceremony DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Upwards of 50 people gathered outside Delta City Hall last Wednesday (June 1) to raise the Progress Pride Flag in celebration of Pride Month and in support of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Among the many in attendance were Mayor George Harvie, City Manager Sean McGill, Coun. Dylan Kruger, vice-president of the Delta Pride Society (DPS) Christa Horita Kadach and Sher Vancouver Outreach Worker Joshna Hirani. Delta Police and Delta Fire were also present. “We’re thrilled that Delta would be part of [showing solidarity] and show that they are allies to those people in the [2SLGBTQ+] community,” says Horita Kadach. The Progress Pride Flag, which was designed by queer non-binary artist Daniel Quasar in 2018, is a combination of the original rainbow flag designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker and the transgender pride flag designed by Monica Helms in 1999. Quasar’s reinterpretation of the flag includes black, brown, light blue, pink and white stripes in the shape of an arrow on the left of the flag, representing marginalized BIPOC folks and the trans and non-binary community, respectively. It aims to celebrate and acknowledge the diversity of the
queer community while simultaneously calling for a more inclusive society, reads the Victoria and Albert Museum’s website. But more rainbows are to come, announced a June 6 press release from the city, and Delta residents and visitors can expect to see rainbow street banners along major roads with the words Acceptance, Courage, Love and Pride. They were created in collaboration with the DPS. “The banners are being placed at community entrances to send a signal to everyone who walks, drives or rides into the community that no matter how you identify or who you love, everyone is welcome here,” said Harvie. Weekly short videos interviewing members of the DPS, Sher Vancouver and the Mayor’s Task Force on Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism will also be released throughout the month of June. Pride Month is celebrated every June to honour the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, which were in response to a June 28 police raid of the gay bar Stonewall Inn and the police brutality against the queer folks inside. The riots were one of the first uprisings in the plight for queer equality and human rights. They were led by queer and transgender women of colour – including Storme DeLarverie, who is widely believed to have thrown the first punch that

done ... The Progress flag shows and celebrates progress, but we just want to tell the community that this is also a time to reflect on the work that continually needs to be [done],” says Horita Kadach.

Jeannie Kanakos not seeking re-election SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Four-term Delta city council member Jeannie Kanakos has announced she won’t be seeking re-election in this year’s municipal election. Thanking the residents of Delta, Kanakos this week said she made the decision after discussions with her family. A Delta resident for more than 40 years, she noted she is known for doing her homework, something she also campaigned on during the last civic election, as well as having independent views about such things as the high-rise developments in North Delta. “Some density is needed, however not at the cost of livability in the community - it is possible to achieve a balance through creative design and consideration of what the residents in the community are saying,” she said in a news release. Having served on most civic committees over the years, Kanakos said she has advocated for a healthy and safe Delta, demonstrated a commitment to livability and sustainability, while also championing social justice, reconciliation, as well as being a councillor who asked “tough” questions. Some of the things she said she’s most proud of include steps by the City of Delta towards reconciliation with the neighbouring First Nations, saying she hopes Delta will continue partnerships on the many issues of joint concern.
Coun. Jeannie Kanakos She also said it’s important to have improved and enhanced relationships with the social services sector who serve the vulnerable in Delta. Also proud the city was able to get a new track built in North Delta, Kanakos said she hopes the same partnerships can be drawn on to improve tracks and recreation facilities in South Delta. “As a resident here in Delta, and now that all of my grandchildren live here, I will continue to advocate for a healthy, safe, livable Delta,” she said. “This community remains the best place to live, work and play in – because of our committed, caring community. Thanks to you all - for all your efforts and support along this journey.” Kanakos was first elected to council in 2005 and served one term before leaving to try her hand at provincial politics. She returned for the 2011 election, getting elected after running with fellow independents Bruce McDonald on council and Laura Dixon who was re-elected to the school board. McDonald and Dixon recently announced they

are also not seeking reelection. In addition to Kanakos and McDonald on council, Lois Jackson and Dan Copeland have also recently announced they are not seeking re-election, which means four council seats have been vacated for the Oct. 15 election. It guarantees a newlook Delta council and the biggest single change in many years. Change on Delta council has been gradual since the early 1990s with council members coming and going, but only three incumbents running for re-election have lost their seats over that time. Mayor George Harvie and incumbent councillors Dylan Kruger and Alicia Guichon recently announced they’re seeking re-election, along with four others on their Achieving for Delta slate hoping to be elected to council for the first time. It remains to be seen how many other people will declare their candidacies and join the election race with so many incumbents leaving. Kanakos offered advice for new councillors: “My biggest hope for the newly-elected councillors is that they listen to the community voices when considering future development. It is the job of the council, with the help of staff, to find the balance between density and development.” She added, “And, at every turn consider the environment and sustainability while balancing, livability, affordability, and beauty for now and future generations.”

The City of Delta’s revised tree bylaw is still a work in progress. Social media was once again abuzz last week with irate posts about the removal of trees from a Delta residential lot to make way for a new home, this time in a Beach Grove neighbourhood. Complaints about the loss of trees on private property have been frequent, particularly in the Sunshine Hills neighbourhood in North Delta in the past couple of years, despite tree removals meeting city application requirements. The city already had a tree replacement policy and more recently came up with an updated bylaw to add further measures. Last December, council approved amendments to the tree protection and regulation bylaw which, among other things, imposed higher tree replacement ratios for large diameter trees and increased cash-inlieu amounts and charges related to unauthorized tree removals. The community planning and development department notes council also asked staff to report back with options for heightened protection of significant trees. Planning staff will explore whether additional measures could be used to address tree removal in connection with building applications, particularly proposed accessory buildings and structures, recognizing the legal parameters between municipal zoning and tree bylaws. Staff are also conducting additional reviews of other municipal bylaws and will report back to council. See more on this story at: www.delta-optimist. com. Look under the local news tab.

New cycling lane planned for Ladner roadway Public open house Thursday night at city hall to discuss project ing along the south side of 44 Avenue to accommodate the cycling lanes. One resident has contacted the Optimist expressing frustration over the potential loss of some of his street’s parking. Construction is tentatively scheduled for this summer or fall, which is to tie into the existing cycling lanes along Arthur Drive, south of 44 Avenue, and would result in a continuous cycling facility on 44 Avenue from Ladner Elementary to Dugald Morrison Park. Delta’s engineering department notes the

Next up is a Ladner roadway as the City of Delta continues to eye more bike lanes in the community. A public information meeting will take place at Delta City Hall this week on proposed cycling improvements on 44 Avenue from Arthur Drive to 57 Street. The project includes marked buffered onstreet cycle lanes, a defined parking lane along the north side of 44 Avenue as well as the removal of on-street park-
proposed project was identified in the 2022 capital plan approved by council. It is currently in the design stage and notices were sent to residents to get comments. The information meeting, scheduled for Thursday, June 9 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., is to obtain community feedback and answer questions. There is also a separate Neighbourhood Road Improvement Project along 44 Avenue between 48B Street and Arthur Drive involving new curb and gutter, sidewalk, multi-use pathway, traf-
fic calming, street light improvements and crosswalk upgrades at 50 Street. That project is to provide improved active transportation connections to Ladner Elementary. Community consultations on that project have concluded and the design was revised to address community feedback. Construction is scheduled to begin this week. As far as cycling improvements in Delta, 44 Avenue is identified as a priority route in the draft Cycling Master Plan. The city is also look-
ing at improving the 64 Street corridor for cyclists through wayfinding signs and markings this year. City council recently endorsed a staff recommendation to see what the public has to say about the draft cycling plan, which has been a couple of years in the making. The report explains the proposed plan focuses on creating a city-wide network of bicycle facilities that are physically separated from traffic and on streets with low traffic volumes. Network gaps were identified with proposed improvements
including 56 Street, 12 Avenue and 28 Avenue in Tsawwassen, as well as 64 Street, Ferry Road and 44 Avenue in Ladner, and also 112 Street, 80 Avenue and Nordel Way in North Delta. Meanwhile, future community linkage bike lane upgrades have also been identified including Arthur Drive, River Road and Ladner Trunk Road. The draft plans identifies new cycling routes, as well as upgrading current routes, which have all been prioritized from high, medium-high, medium, medium-low to low.

Delta pales in comparison to its bigger neighbours when it comes to the newest municipal elections expense limits. Elections BC says all mayoralty, council and school board candidates have expense limits that apply during the campaign period, which for the 2022 local election is from Sept. 17 to Oct. 15. Each election area and office has its
own limit, which is based on the population of the election area. The limits apply not only to the 2022 general local elections but also all subsequent byelections. In the City of Delta, mayoralty candidates must not spend more than $74,430, while council candidates are limited to spending $37,708 and school board trustee candidates are capped at $37,277. Meanwhile, Richmond mayoralty candidates are to spend no more than $138,932 and council candidates are

Donations from individuals in the local municipal elections in B.C. are capped at $1,250. Those donating also must live in B.C. and be either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. Third-party sponsors that endorse candidates for council also face limits, depending on the community. For mayor and council in the City of Delta,

Council approves three more cannabis stores SANDOR GYARMATI

City council held a public hearing Tuesday to hear what residents had to say about a proposal to open a cannabis retail store in Ladner. The rezoning application by Imagine Cannabis would see a non-medical dispensary open at the Ladner Centre shopping mall. Also requiring a provincial licence, it is proposed to be open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. It’s the only cannabis application currently on the books for Ladner, while applications have already been approved for dispensaries in North Delta, Tsawwassen as well as Annacis Island. Applicant Harp Hoonjan, who recently had an application to open a store in Tsawwassen approved, told council they looked at several potential
North Delta. The other application by Paul Sahota would see a cannabis shop open at the Tidewater Pub and Liquor Store at 10190 River Road. That proposed cannabis dispensary would be operated under the business name Kushi Cannabis Co. Both were also approved, although Jackson asked, “how much is enough?” The city could end up with nine cannabis stores if all the applications currently in the system are approved and join the applications that have already been approved. That includes an application to open a dispensary in an industrial area at 7550 River Road, which is still under review and is the last to come to council. The city has imposed a moratorium on accepting and considering any further applications and it remains to be seen if that freeze will be lifted.

Also on the hearing agenda were two other applications to open cannabis shops. t has been a long wait for grad classes to truly celebrate their end of high school success. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the popular tradition of grad walks along the red carpet were cancelled the past two years at Delta Secondary and South Delta Secondary. Modified grad events were held thanks to the hard work of parents and community volunteers, but it just wasn’t the same. Last week and this week, the grads are back in the spotlight as DSS held their grad walk on June 3, with SDSS hosting its grad walk today (Thursday). We will highlight many of the grads in our grad section next week, but in the meantime, be sure to check out our webpage for a number of photo galleries from both events. It’s fantastic to see these students get their time to shine. Their years of hard work is recognized by this endof-year tradition. The smiles and joy on their faces is a welcome sight after two years of pandemic restrictions and lockdowns. And while the grads shine on that red carpet, many of them are shinning elsewhere too. DSS is now home to a national award-winning culinary student (see our website for the story), 20 athletes from SDSS are off seeking glory on the track at the provincial championships this weekend and the biggest accomplishment of them all – the SDSS senior girls’ soccer team claimed its second provincial banner last Friday. This team is something special. Connected through lasting bonds on and off the field, many of this team have already punched their tickets to post-secondary university and are sure to continue to make their mark. It’s a wonderful time for all our grads. We wish them all the best in their next adventure.

don’t enjoy marijuana, or pot, ganja, grass, dope, or whatever your pet name is for it. Like most teenagers I tried it with my friends. I decided it wasn’t for me after a few unfortunate experiences that included vomiting and incoherent rambling. Full discloser, I enjoy alcohol and I have nothing against anyone who enjoys cannabis, it just never appealed to me. I remember attending a parent advisory council meeting 25 years ago where an RCMP officer said he would lay his body down on the road before he would allow marijuana to become legal. How times have changed. If you’re over 19 simply drop into any cannabis store and buy a designer joint or edibles in the shape of teddy bears. Not much different from a trip to the liquor store. The old toy store in Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall will soon become South Delta’s first of two nonmedicinal cannabis stores. The second store will only be a few

blocks away. Ladner Shopping Centre is also getting a pot store. Only stipulation by city council was to keep it away from the Dairy Queen. Blizzards and pot don’t go together. The City of Delta could have as many as nine stores if council approves all the applications. That seems excessive. I would be surprised if demand is that high, but what do I know. Since I’m not a consumer of cannabis their appearance on our retail landscape won’t affect me. It does however effect parents concerned about
their teens proximity to cannabis stores. As in real estate, location matters, so council is keen to keep the shops away from schools and playgrounds. The shops must be approved by the province’s liquor and cannabis regulation branch, and they must adhere to strict rules and enforcement, otherwise they lose their licence. Likely the stores will open without much fanfare, but it does mean marijuana products will become more easily available in our community That’s welcome news for those who need it for medicinal reasons. A 90-year-old relative of mine uses marijuana topically for back pain and swears by it. The successful legalization of cannabis may open the doors to the legalization of harder drugs as we struggle to deal with the overdose crisis that has no end in sight. Regulated, safe access to drugs seems to be the only way forward, because just saying no doesn’t work.

A wonderful May Days weekend Editor: As a past member of the Ladner May Days committee, I’d like to congratulate committee chair Jennifer Scott and her team of volunteers for the great success of the 2022 May Days Fair & Parade. Organizing an event like May Days is a huge
undertaking at the best of times and for Jennifer (the longest serving volunteer in Ladner May Days history) and her team to successfully resurrect the fair after a two-year hiatus, and with only six weeks lead time, is an amazing achievement. Events like May Days
are incredibly important for building positive memories and sense of community in children, especially now in an era when they are bombarded with so much negativity, and Jennifer and her team deserve a huge thanks for their remarkable work. Dan Southard
What does infiltration look like? Editor: On Sunday, May 29 the community was once again able to enjoy May Days in Ladner. The theme for 2022 was Celebrating Frontline Heroes. Imagine our surprise then to see a group called Action4Canada with an entry in the parade. Along the parade route, the group was handing out pamphlets with rhetoric characterizing masking and vac-
cines for children as child abuse. The literature was later available at their booth set up adjacent to the fairgrounds. Similar to the hostile takeover of the Delta Hospice in 2019, this demonstrates how easy it is for a community to be infiltrated by a group with dangerous rhetoric when people remain silent. We must always choose to take a stand and be more than just a bystander.
We would also like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to those who did take a stand and to the leadership of the May Days Committee for acting so quickly when this was brought to their attention. The Community Action for Equity and Racial Justice Committee (Spoke of Resilience BC’s Anti-Racism Network)
Headline misleading, but brought attention to issue Editor: As a Beach Grove Elementary PAC member, I was very disappointed in the tone of a recent article by the Optimist about the Beach Grove off-leash dog park. In my opinion, the misleading headline appeared to be an attempt to polarize the community. However, I am hopeful that the attention this article created will motivate a solution to protect dogs and children alike.
Does anyone recall that from the off-leash area’s inception there was no fencing at all between the school grounds and the dog area? The fencing that finally came to fruition was a result of years of complaints, letters, and petitions to the city. This could have been prevented if infrastructure had been implemented from the get go. Many parents from Beach Grove Elementary frequent the dog park and would hate to see it
leave the community as much as the other dog owners. We are simply requesting proper signage, fencing and bylaw presence to keep the dogs and the students safe. We recently met with city planners and received reassurance that while they are still in the consultation process the goal is to add proper fencing along parts of the dog park without sacrificing much of the off-use area. Emily Modrovic

Editor: I have just read a letter in the Optimist (June 2), inferring that emergency sirens are a major irritant in Delta. Coincidently, I heard a siren in the distance. My thoughts were not that this was a “major irritant” but that this was the time in the morning almost three years ago that my lovely wife Anne had suffered a major stroke and I had to call 9-1-1 for help. On that morning a calm voice on the line told me that a fire truck was already on the way from 12th Ave. and I should hear the siren within a minute, which thankfully I did. As the firemen came into the house and started assessing the situation I was told on the telephone that an ambulance was following
shortly from Ladner. Sure enough, I soon heard that wonderful noise again and the two paramedics came in and took over. A swift ambulance ride to Vancouver General Hospital then followed with me in the passenger seat counting the minutes as we travelled through rush hour traffic through the tunnel (a bridge would have been a faster journey) and then straight down Oak Street to VGH where the stroke team were waiting for us in emergency. When the writer of the complaining letter moved to Tsawwassen in the late 90’s it was a younger community than now, and there was probably less need for emergency sirens. This was certainly the case when we settled here in the early 70’s with our young
family. When I hear a siren at any time my thoughts are now that my own situation should not impede the emergency vehicle’s progress so that the first responders are in time to help others in trouble. That particular morning I am sorry to say I did witness some drivers on the highway delaying in clearing the passing lane and causing the ambulance driver to slow down, and then very close to the hospital a group of young pedestrians slowly ambled across the road while attending to their phones and iPads having caused the ambulance to stop. These were my major irritants that morning, when every minute was important to Anne’s survival. Ian Short
How do we relcaim the flag for this Canada Day? Editor: I am writing this letter in the hopes to have a discussion about reclaiming the Canadian flag, so everyone may display the red and white this Canada day with no hesitancy. Prior to the pandemic, the display of our national flag was not associated with any political movements or interest groups, it was just about Canada.
I feel over the last two years, our national symbol of pride has been hijacked for political reasons. These groups have every right to peacefully protest, they are well within their rights as Canadians and that’s why I love our country. My focus is on how do we as a society reclaim our national flag for everyone? I feel that we all as a
society need to display our Canadian flag with pride this upcoming Canada Day. As a patriotic Canadian, I would like to start a movement that we all can get behind which is displaying our national colors with celebration this July 1, so that we can all move forward together as Canadians. Please use the hashtag #reclaimtheflag Ted Olak
Too much rubber stamping at council Editor: I tuned in to last council meeting of Delta council on May 30 and was dismayed to see only three councillors in attendance. The business portion of meeting lasted
40 minutes. I hope this is not a sign of things to come. Thankfully the Official Community Plan amendment proposals were put on hold. Two of these proposals
are of significant size, so I hope at the next meeting there would be at least some discussion and not just fast rubber stamping, as is happening too often these days. Jean Wightman

Ladner Village Market opening for its 26th season this Sunday
Congratulations to
Market open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the first time this year DANI PENALOZA
Contributing Writer
Rain or shine, the Ladner Village Market will be up and running this Sunday (June 12) for the first day of their season, and everyone is invited – well, except your pets. This year marks the beloved market’s 26th season where vendors from both the nearby area and around the province line the village streets to sell their locally made, baked or grown goods. Whether it’s colourful produce, fresh-baked treats or beautiful art pieces you’re looking for, the Ladner Village Market has been and continues to be the pop-
ular place to shop around on select Sundays. “We’re reopening as a full Ladner Village Market. We still have a few more open areas – spaces for people to congregate or to gather and talk with friends and family – but it is 95 per cent of what we usually have at a market,” says Tracey McKnight, one of the four market managers. Live music is back and so are the typical five entrances to the market, as opposed to the limited two entrances they enforced over the past two years, she adds. Around 160 vendors are anticipated for this year’s season, with 32 of those being new faces, which is an increase from
last year’s 125 vendors. “We’re excited to be showcasing the creative talent of our seasoned vendors, as well as the young entrepreneurs from our immediate community ... We’re excited to see this next generation that’s already showing such promise,” added McKnight. The team is working to reduce the unnecessary use of plastic bags and are encouraging folks to bring their own tote bags. But if you forget your bags at home, custom Ladner Village Market tote bags will also be available for purchase at the information booth. Though they won’t be posting a list of all the vendors who will be in attendance this year,
they are asking folks with questions about specific vendors to send a direct message to their Facebook page. In addition to its opening date on June 12, the market will be running on June 26, July 10, July 24, Aug. 14, Aug. 28 and Sept. 11. Similar to last year, dogs – with the exception of Certified Guide Dogs – will not be allowed at the market as leashes can make for added social distancing obstacles. And if you’re unfamiliar with where the Ladner Village Market will be taking place, you can plunk this address – 5028A 48th Ave. in Delta – into your GPS or head between Delta St. and Elliot St.

A popular tradition returned to South Delta on Sunday, June 5 as the Tsawwassen Shrine Club presented its salmon barbecue in Ladner Harbour Park. A fundraising total from the event is still being finalized, but the Shriners report that more than 1,300 meals were served on Sunday. Close to $400,000 has been raised in the 51 years of running the event, which is aided by the help of dozens of volunteers, including many non-Shriners. A weekend of music, workshops and wellness The Reset Weekend is set for June 17 and 18 A group of Delta community organizers have launched The RESET Weekend, a series of music and community arts workshops events on June 17 and 18, in support of mental health wellness. The group includes Andrew and Meg Neufeld from Alongside You, musicians Mike and Emile Greene and actors Eric and Peg Keenleyside of Delta Stageworks. “The pandemic has had its mental health stresses for everybody; including ourselves,” says Eric Keenleyside. “So we wanted to offer a weekend of arts activities that could be a good place to relax, have some laughs, reconnect and reenergize.” The RESET Weekend has a musicians jam on Friday, June
17 at the Tsawwassen Legion, and also several low-cost arts workshop options available on Saturday, June 18 at Ladner’s All Saints Anglican Church and Ladner Baptist Church. “COVID-19 has made in-person get togethers and arts-related activities very challenging for the past two and a half years. We know from research, and our experiences at our clinic, that the arts have a powerful influence on how we process, and cope with stress,” said Andrew Neufeld. “We also know how powerful the arts are for creating connections. Relationships are key coming out of COVID-19 and we’re looking forward to creating new connections together at The RESET Weekend.” The Friday night musicians
jam at the Legion will be hosted by The Lite Stripes with Andrew Neufeld and house band hosts Mike and Emile Greene, featuring local musicians from around Delta. “Whether you are a player, a singer or just feel like listening, join us for some great local live music,” said Mike Greene. “Bring your instruments, your microphones, your friends and let’s play like the pandemic never happened.” The Saturday arts workshops will be facilitated by arts and mental health professionals from Alongside You, Delta Stageworks and Delta Youth Theatre. Workshop options include therapeutic dance, theatre games, visual arts and musical
theatre. “I’m truly grateful that so many experienced local professionals have come forward to lead these workshops,” said Peg Keenleyside. “Creative activities that spark joy and bring laughter into our lives is absolutely the thing we need to stay resilient right now.” She notes that no experience is necessary to participate in any of the workshops on offer and that they’re all geared for adults. Sponsor support for The RESET Weekend is coming from the Delta Community Foundation, Neighbourhood Grants Program, Alongside You and Delta Stageworks. All the weekend’s events as well as costs to participate can all be found on Eventbrite.

Yes there is a place for doctrine and dogma Allow me a few moments to speak about doctrine and dogma. Wake you up when I’m done, you say? I understand. For many people, the discussion of doctrine and dogma rank right up there with watching paint dry and grass grow, but please hear me out. Doctrine and dogma are actually vital — important because they provide guidance for the faith journey. Experience shows that we need guidance when we are travelling physically. Hiking in the backcountry without water and other supplies, without GPS, without maps, and without a compass, is a recipe for disaster. The same is true in our spiritual lives. We naturally like to make our own decisions, decide in what we want to believe in —
especially in this day and age. That seekers tend to prefer spiritual buffets over set menus isn’t a new thing, however. When The Apostle Paul was doing his missionary work, he encountered a Greco-Roman world with all kinds of spiritual beliefs. Paul’s mission wasn’t to help people discover what was true for them — but to proclaim the absolute truth of the gospel to them. The Holy Trinity is the foundational doctrine for those who confess Christ as Lord. The ancient creeds of the church, confessed daily and weekly in congregations around the world, are based upon the truths revealed in Holy Scripture, and provide the basis for all true doctrine. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity — God as, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — is the
foundational doctrine of Christianity. This doctrine tells us that God is one substance, but at the same time three distinct persons who exist in equal relationship — a relationship we are made part of. For the God who creates, redeems, and sustains, isn’t confined to some far away realm high above us, but lives right here in the midst of our world, in the intimacy of our individual lives. The God described in the doctrine of the Holy Trinity is in personal relationship with you! Here is where the doctrinal rubber meets the world of everyday living. While the Holy Trinity is the biggest mystery in the cosmos, what is not a mystery is the love that this God has for you. -Thomas Keeley

Twenty SDSS athletes headed to track & field provincials South Delta Sun Devils track and field program sure knows how to make up for lost time. Competing for the first time in two years due to the pandemic, the Sun Devils have qualified 20 athletes for next weekend’s provincial championships at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley. It’s the largest contingent of athletes headed to the showcase meet in decades. Qualifying was based on results at the inaugural South Fraser Championships in South Surrey, featuring schools from Delta, Richmond and Surrey. “We’ve been pretty thrilled to see the resilience of some kids who haven’t competed all this time,” said SDSS track coach Gatlin Saip. Gemma Dumas set the tone for the entire
team by winning the senior girls 800 metres and also earning second-place finishes in the 1,500m and 400m. That was in addition to anchoring the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. It was a golden meet for Aiden Turner with victories in the pole vault, sprint hurdles and discus. He will for certain be a podium favourite in Langley. Declan Dunn set a new personal best and anchored the senior boys 4x100 relay team to a second-place finish. Isla Stewart will head to the provincials with the top qualifying leap in the senior girl’s high jump, thanks to clearing 1.68 meters at the South Frasers. She will be joined by Mia Baldauf and SDSS volleyball standout Myah Cressy. Baldauf also won the
long jump at the zone meet. Lisa De David booked her ticket to Langley by winning the junior girls javelin throw. Jackson MaccubbinLowrey made an impressive showing in the senior boys 1500m as well as anchoring the 4x400m relay team. His mental toughness and grit was on display as he passed four runners in the final leg of the relay. Jade De Fondaumiere qualified for provincials by coming second in the junior girls 400m and fourth in the 800m. Elliot Loveless set new personal best times in the senior boys 400m and 800m to advance to the provincials. He also joins Diego Fernandez, Maccubbin and Dunn on the relay 4x100 relay team. Other qualifiers for
provincial championships include: Sofia Petz (sprint hurdles), Teila Noble (senior girls 4x100m and 4x400m relays), Katrina Staley (senior girls 4x400m relay), Hattie Lundie (senior girls 4x100m relay), Ava Lappin (senior girls 4x100m and 4x400m relays), Kira Denney (senior girls 400m and 4x400m relay), Maya Schenk (junior girls 4x100m relay), Barunka Sibertova (junior girl’s 4x100m relay) and Gemma Houghton (junior girls 4x100m relay). Bluebacks return to competition this weekend at Winskill
The Boundary Bay Bluebacks are celebrating the return of fun-focused competition, by hosting their annual swim meet this weekend (June 11 and 12) at Winskill Aquatic Centre. The swim club is excited kids have a chance at some regular competition again, after such a long drought. Although Bluebacks were able to attend a couple of scaled down meets last year, this season really is the first time their newer members will get to experience all the fun of swim meets. The club warmed up with successful time trials the last weekend in May.
Thanks to the strong leadership of long-time meet manager Steve Barber, the Bluebacks Swim Meet is one of the most popular and wellattended of the summer swim schedule, attracting other BC Summer Swimming Association clubs from all over the Fraser South Region and beyond. For the Bluebacks (or B4 as they’re often called), the home meet is about bringing the team members together, and building connections. “We recognize not everyone wants a lot of competition, but the home meet offers

a chance for developing swimmers to prove what they can do for themselves, in a safe, encouraging and familyfriendly environment,” said club vice-president Andrea Aird. “For other kids that are eager to develop their skills, we also have been developing a talented team of coaches, led by Jeanelle Thomas, and working a lot on skill development under the leadership of technical director and Olympian, Richard Hortness. “We’re also delighted to offer the return of “B3’s,” our developmental program for swimmers

six and under. They’re our next generation of coaches and leaders, plus they’re just a lot of fun to have around the pool.” The club has been active in the South Delta community for more than 50 years and continues to be a popular summer activity for many local families. They practice predominantly out of Winskill, with their regular summer season running from May 1 until early August. Swim meets take place most weekends in June and July. Thomas Haydon Memorial Game returns this Saturday MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Co-workers, friends, family and the lacrosse community will resume an annual tribute to the life of Thomas Haydon on Saturday, June 11 at the Ladner Leisure Centre (LLC). It starts with the return of the Thomas Haydon Memorial Game following a two-year pause due to COVID, honouring the lifelong Ladner resident and Delta firefighter who, at 36, lost a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2018. Haydon not only left behind a young family, but a lacrosse community where he had contributed to greatly. Haydon played and coached in Ladner for more than 20 years. He was also the first captain of the inaugural Delta Junior “A” Islanders in 2002. His playing career
included helping the Ladner Pioneers win the President’s Cup national senior “B” championship in 2004. The fundraising Memorial Game will get underway at 4 p.m. and will include a beer garden and a barbecue. The activities will lead into the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse game between the host Islanders and Port Coquitlam Saints that starts at 7 p.m. During the intermission, the 2022 recipient of the Thomas Haydon Memorial Award will be presented to a Delta player. The award was created by some of Haydon’s closest lifelong friends and is affiliated with Delta Lacrosse. It comes with a $2,500 scholarship. The winner receives a custom Haydon axe, reflecting his career as a firefighter. A larger version of the award and

acteristics and was an outstanding member of the Ladner community,” said his friends in a prepared statement.
“Our hope is to help a Delta lacrosse player who demonstrates some of his admirable qualities (hard work, loyalty, courage,
and respect) to pursue post-secondary education, work in the trades, or benefit from financial assistance.”

OBITUARIES
In Loving Memory of
Dennis is survived by his mother, Maureen, and his 2 brothers Keith (Donna) and Lorne (Lisa), as well as 2 nieces, 3 nephews, 4 great nieces and 3 great nephews. He was predeceased by his father Victor, on June 3, 2017. Dennis’s work career started out on local farms in Ladner, he went commercial fishing a few years before finding his true love and lifelong career of commercial fuel truck driver. Dennis had many interests and enjoyments, his biggest pleasure came from socializing with his many friends and acquaintances, he was never scared to strike up a conversation, hence his nickname “Gabby “ which he got at a young age and lived up to his whole life. He loved to watch his beloved New York Yankees and followed every pitch with passion. He also enjoyed golf, and earlier played softball on the Deltaport Farms Fastball Team. Over the years he fought off various illnesses, cancer, heart problems, COPD, and broken bones successfully, and he never complained. He fought and was a warrior right to the end. The family would like to thank all the medical professionals, nurses, doctors, etc. for their excellent care and compassion over the years. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Delta Hospital, Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
A Celebration of Life will be held June 23, 2022 from 1:00- 4:00 pm at Harris Barn 4140 Arthur Drive, Delta, BC.

Celebration Of Life June 18th, 2022 at 2:00 pm Cedar Park Church 5300 44th Ave, Ladner All are Welcome
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eric West. Eric passed peacefully in Delta Hospital on May 22. He was predeceased by his father Eric, mother Louise, brother Gerry and sister Muriel. He is survived by his wife Doreen; brother Mike; children Donna, Ron, Bruce, Kathy and Peter, Ian and Alan; and grandchildren Kevin, Jason and Cindy, Jordan and Holly, Kyle, Daryl, and Laura and Mark. Born in Regina, SK, Eric’s family moved to Vancouver when he was a young boy, and he grew up in Kerrisdale. He married his wife Doreen in 1952, and they raised their family of six children in Tsawwassen. They remained happily married until his passing shortly after celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary and his 95th birthday. Eric worked for the City of Vancouver, starting as a Surveyor in 1952 and by the time he retired in 1986, he was the Assistant City Engineer. Notable projects that he was in charge of included the False Creek Sea Wall and later the construction of the new Cambie Street Bridge on schedule in time for Expo 86. Eric’s many passions in life included boating, stamp collecting and researching his ancestry. He was always eager to volunteer for a worthy cause and was instrumental in fighting for public access to Tsawwassen Beach at Fred Gingell Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delta Assist or the Food Bank.
Funeral will be held June 15, 2022 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, 3900 Arthur Drive, Delta, BC.
