Residents object to carving up federal riding into three SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Leave Delta alone. That was the major theme conveyed to the three panel members of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission at a public hearing Thursday regarding a proposal to redraw the electoral boundaries for the Delta riding. More than 100 residents attended the meeting at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn and those who signed up to speak reiterated concerns about Delta losing effective representation in Parliament, a result of the current single riding being carved into three and the city’s residents becoming a minority in new ridings that would be lumped into Richmond and Surrey. “With the proposed amendments, North Delta, which is home to more than half of Delta’s population, would be split between Richmond East and Surrey West,” said Mayor George Harvie. “Our constituents in North Delta would become minority voices represented by neighbouring municipalities which have their own and very different issues and very different priorities. Effective political representation would be lost. At the same time, our residents in South Delta would be joined by some 50,000 residents from West Surrey with very different demographics and issues and priorities.” Others echoed those concerns, adding the city is not far off of a new 116,000 population quota for ridings

SANDOR GYARMATI PHOTO

Delta resident Mary Bergin told the commission it would not be a good situation for seniors having to take a bus to another city to get service from an MP representing their riding.

and that projected population growth in the community, as well as Tsawwassen First Nation, would keep Delta very much in line with the required number. Delta’s MP Carla Qualtrough also made a presentation, noting the community does not need to be unnecessarily fragmented. She warned Delta would lose quality of service, outreach and advocacy tailored for the community and that Delta’s priorities would

not be the same as the other cities. Qualtrough also highlighted examples of how ridings now are competing for funding for projects and that Delta would end up on the losing end. She suggested the panel look for creative ways to keep Delta intact. Representing Delta South MLA Ian Paton, constituency assistant Taylor Grant warned the carving up of Delta would impact services and make it

much more difficult for people trying to navigate various levels of government. Others noted the city and school district would end up having to deal with three different MPs on issues. Rather than carving up federal electoral boundaries in order to create one new one in B.C., another suggested Ottawa should instead focus on providing more funding for MP’s to adequately represent their current ridings and their unique needs. Representing the Delta Chamber of Commerce, Optimist publisher and chamber director Pierre Pelletier outlined several concerns when it comes to the business community, including an increase in inefficiencies, how the move would be unnecessary due to population growth and that the proposed changes would result in Richmond residents making determinations on Delta’s industrial activities. Previously, the municipality was split with the ridings of Delta-Richmond East and Newton-North Delta, but in 2015 a reconfiguration resulted in Delta becoming its own, single riding. That could change as the commission is proposing a new riding called Delta that would see Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta below 72 Avenue join part of Surrey, extending all the way to King George Highway. Another part of North Delta would be lumped into Surrey as part of a Surrey riding, while another area of North Delta and the River House area of Ladner would join a newly reconfigured Richmond East.

Huge cost to protect Delta from flooding SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s going to cost the City of Delta more than $1.9 billion to upgrade its extensive dike system, unless senior levels of government step up and provide financial support. A recent staff report on Delta’s flood protection and infrastructure initiatives to the Climate Action and Community Livability Advisory Committee outlines some ominous numbers facing the city, which has more than 67 km of dikes that require seismic and other upgrades to meet the latest standards. Facing the risk of flooding from coastal storm surges as well as the Fraser River spring freshet (flooding), the estimated cost, so far, for dike raising and seismic improvements by 2100 is estimated at more than $1.9 billion, with the first phase alone, excluding seismic improvements, tabbed at $350 million. The city currently has $6.5 billion in private property and public infrastructure protected by Delta’s diking infrastructure, while the estimated damage by a major dike breach is anywhere from $1 billion-to-$3 billion. About 53 per cent of Delta’s land mass is vulnerable to flooding. The Fraser Basin Council recommends establishing a long-term funding program to support implementation of the Lower Mainland Flood Management Strategy, with senior level government financial support clearly needed. The report also outlined some of the key upcoming projects

More than half of Delta’s land base is in danger of flooding as evident by last year’s November rain storms. for Delta including the Ladner Waterfront Flood Protection Strategy. That project includes an upgrade for 500 metres of dike along Chisholm Street, as well as raising and upgrading Chisholm Street to increase its elevation. The city received a $149,500 grant through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund for planning and design work and has applied for a $20 million grant through the Disaster Mitigation Adaption Fund. Among the other initiatives is the Living Dike Project, also known as the Boundary Bay Foreshore Enhancement Project, an alternate form of foreshore flood protection. That project is to develop and test a method of supplying sediment and vegetation on the foreshore to help existing salt marsh

habitats increase in elevation and keep up with sea level rise, known as a living dike. A previous report to council explained the salt marsh can absorb wave energy, reducing the overall wave height that will assist in reducing the dike design elevation and possibly lengthen the timelines for dike raising activities. The pilot project involves designing and constructing a 250-linear-metre section of raised salt marsh in the foreshore along Boundary Bay near 96th Street. The report also notes the pilot project is intended through experimental design to develop and inform future designs of larger living dike projects in Boundary Bay. The city has already signed a memorandum of understand-

ing with the City of Surrey and the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development to facilitate construction and permitting of the foreshore enhancement. Some of the initiatives in Delta’s Flood Management Strategy include extensive protection upgrades for the River Road West area, a flood protection strategy for Boundary Bay/ Beach Grove, a Beach Grove seawall assessment, the Boundary Bay Construction Fill Pilot Dike Project, Chillukthan Drainage Pump Station upgrades, a new 84th Street Pump Station and the Mason Culvert upgrades. The latest report notes the next steps include developing a strategy roadmap, engaging residents, committing to a funding model and seeking senior government funding.

Nineteen police officers from eight B.C. departments — including Delta — are being investigated for conduct during an undercover officer training course last month. A statement from the police complaint commissioner says an independent investigations unit out of Manitoba has been tasked with probing allegations of serious misconduct concerning 19 officers in candidate and supervisory roles. Officers from departments in Abbotsford, Vancouver, New Westminster, Delta, Surrey, Saanich and Victoria, along with Metro Vancouver Transit Police, are being investigated, the statement said. Complaints about

the municipal undercover training course held on May 2 were initially made to the B.C. Municipal Chiefs of Police by the RCMP, which had officers present in an observer role. The matter was then reported to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner, an independent agency that oversees complaints and investigations of municipal police in the province. The actions of some municipal police officers while performing various physical acts and activities in some of the scenarios “caused concern that their actions could be defined as potential misconduct under the Police Act,” the statement said. “The nature of the allegations includes serious and concerning conduct performed in front

of course supervisors and other course participants.” In a report published last month, Global News reported that the police officers were attending an undercover training course conducted by the Association of B.C. Municipal Police Chiefs at a downtown Vancouver hotel when asked to convincingly portray they were criminals and not police officers. The role-play allegedly involved defecation, food used in a sexual manner, and other disturbing or perverse acts. The course was stopped and some officers reported it to their supervisors. The allegations have not been proven. Chief Constable John Lo of the West Vancouver Police Department has been appointed as the discipline authority.

Ladner Willows application moves to public hearing An application to build a 150-unit non-market rental apartment building in Ladner will be heading to a public hearing, which has not been scheduled yet. Council on Monday approved a staff recommendation to grant preliminary approval for a proposal by Red Door Housing Society to redevelop the 40-unit Ladner Willows townhouse complex, located in the 5600block of Ladner Trunk Road. A planning department report notes the rezoning application responds to Delta’s Housing Needs Assessment, which identified the need to increase the supply of purpose-built rental housing and to improve housing affordability. The proposal also aligns with Delta’s Housing Action Plan, which prioritizes and supports the addition of more diverse housing options. “With respect to compliance with Ladner Area Plan policies, the proposal would result in an affordable housing development for families, seniors and individuals with intellectual disabilities. The development would be situated near community, recreational and municipal services, and would upgrade the streetscape and architecture of the neighbourhood,” the report notes. A larger rear setback and landscaping along the north property line would enhance privacy and reduce shadow impacts on the existing single-detached dwellings, the report notes. Prior to Monday’s meeting, an area resident opposed to the application had a letter read into the council record. The letter writer stated the proposal was “oversized and inappropriate” and that nearby residents’ concerns have been largely dismissed by planners. -Sandor Gyarmati

Delta Board of Education Trustee Nick Kanakos has announced he is seeking re-election in this year’s municipal election. “It has been an honour to serve the Delta school community for 11 years,” said the three-term trustee in a news release. “Over the course of my service, I have gained a depth of knowledge on board policies, regulations and procedures – and I am aware of staffing and funding issues as well as concerns of our parents.” Formerly a teacher at North Delta Secondary for 33 years, Kanakos has been a school board representative on the Delta Youth Activity Council, the Emergency Preparedness Committee,

the Indigenous Enhancement Committee, the Audit Committee and the British Columbia Public Schools Employer’s Association. “My depth of experience in the classroom allows me to understand the system from the ‘inside out’,” he added. “I believe that I have the experience necessary to help guide our school district. I believe we have an excellent school sys-

tem and I will continue the hard work it takes to make the school district the envy of the province.” Kanakos hasn’t announced if he will be running with anyone else in this year’s election. “I view the role of school trustee as a longterm commitment with education a partnership between the schools, the parents and the students,” he said. “My door will be open and I will work with you to provide the best education possible for our children.” Nick’s wife, Delta city councillor Jeannie Kanakos, announced last week that she won’t be seeking re-election. The couple have lived in North Delta since the early 1980s and have grandchildren still residing in the community and attending school in Delta. The municipal election is Oct. 15.

School staff survey shows racism a significant issue DANI PENALOZA

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

The Delta School District is committing to five actions for how they will address racism that more than half of surveyed staff say they had witnessed or directly experienced while working in the district. Damaging stereotypes, jokes, assumptions and beliefs were among the racist behaviours identified by more than 50 per cent of the 430 respondents, as well as structural and systemic concerns embedded within the district’s policies and procedures. “The role of education in building intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect is vital in advancing the journey of reconciliation, and addressing and eliminating racism,” said co-chairs of the district’s Antiracism Committee Satnam Chahal, Nancy Gordon and Brooke Moore in a recent press release. Following the survey,

It’ll be

AMAZING !

which was conducted last fall by the Antiracism Committee, the district consulted with this committee to commit to five actionable items, which include: * Educating staff on the recently approved Antiracism Procedure and their duty to uphold it * Helping staff learn more about antiracism * Recognizing and celebrating more culturally significant days and months * Supporting work sites to become more antiracist * Using an antiracist lens when purchasing future learning resources and prioritizing content created by BIPOC folks. “We believe there is a need for action on all fronts – from addressing the ways in which racial bias makes its way into everyday interactions and understanding how best to intervene when witnessing racism, to thinking carefully about how it is reflected in our systems and structures,”

said the co-chairs in the release. “If we want every student and staff member in Delta to feel valued, seen and heard, we know that it’s not enough to be ‘not racist.’ We must proactively strive to be anti-racist..” Some findings and personal stories shared from the survey highlighted that folks can not bring their full skills and gifts to work if they feel unsafe, that being more self-aware can contribute to a safe and inclusive environment and that being anti-racist means educating and challenging ourselves to take action against racism systems, structures and behaviours. Last year, a group of Delta educators created a website containing valuable resources on anti-racism, and this year, anti-racism committee school teams in the district’s secondary schools are conducting student surveys and working on antiracism initiatives.

T

he room was packed with more than 100 concerned Delta citizens. Business leaders, politicians from all three levels of government and average everyday citizens, came out to the Coast Tsawwassen Inn on Thursday, June 9 to listen, learn and present their comments to the three panel members of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission. The commission is proposing a new riding called Delta that would see Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta below 72 Avenue join part of Surrey, extending all the way to King George Highway. Another part of North Delta would be lumped into Surrey as part of a Surrey riding, while another area of North Delta and the River House area of Ladner would join a newly reconfigured Richmond East. Effective representation will be lost if the decision is made to carve up Delta into three pieces. The common theme of the evening was pretty clear: leave Delta alone. In my six years here in Delta, I don’t recall an issue where the business community and all three levels of government (municipal, federal and provincial) all agreed on something and lobbied together. Last Thursday was the only meeting scheduled for Delta, which is shameful. Another meeting should be held in North Delta, which based on this current plan, would see a huge impact in how and who they would vote for and how they would be represented. Now in the days, weeks and months to come, we will see if it was all worth it. Did the Commission hear this community? Were all of the comments presented taken into account? I sure hope so. If not, then this community could be looking at a very bleak federal political future.

Grow local, buy local and eat local

I

f you listen to CKNW radio you will have noticed that they are running a series on farming called “Keep it local”. The series is sponsored by BC Fresh. There have been many interesting sessions since May 30 and the final interview is on Friday. The sessions are available for replay on the CKNW audio vault which is easily accessed on their website. On June 10, local farmer Sharon Ellis of Westham Island Herb Farm was interviewed. Her family has been farming locally since the late 1800’s. I’m sure many of you have visited her farm to harvest strawberries in the spring and summer and pumpkins in the fall. She noted that the strawberries are looking good and that they have just been very late due to the cool and damp spring. She expects the fruit to ripen this weekend, and fingers crossed, a drying trend will evolve to prevent any mould from threatening the fruit. It has been the worst spring for farmers in 40 years and there are still fields that have

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

yet to be planted. If you have visited the farms on Westham Island the past couple of years you will have noticed that it has been exceptionally busy to the point where flaggers have had to manage traffic on the bridge. Sharon noted that the pandemic has played an interesting role in her business. People have become more food cognizant. They are thinking about local food and how to access it and in the case of berries and other fruits and vegetables, how to preserve them. Growing local is making a huge comeback in

this regard. I notice the positive impacts of COVID-19 almost daily now as the Project Pickle kids tell me what they are growing on newly created backyard farms. This week and next, some 1,600 cucumber seedlings are making their way to homes all across Delta. The kids are tasked with looking after their plants and reporting back in the fall with stories about making “Farmer Mike’s most excellent cucumber salad” for their families. Education about food and farming is certainly gaining momentum and that can only be good for society in general. Recent survey results from the City of Delta’s revised agriculture plan note that 85 per cent of the 600 respondents would support food-related curriculum in our schools. In the same survey, the same 90 per cent of respondents noted that their favourite agricultural activity would be to buy food directly from the farm. Buying local is important and our surging interest in farming and food security is ironically thanks to COVID-19.

Shame on the province

Editor: Re: Light rail coming through Delta shot down, again (Optimist, web, June 8) When B.C.’s Transportation Minister, Rob Fleming, is so ignorant of transit mode, he must resign because he is ignorant about regional transit issues. Fleming’s comment: “In fact, they looked as far ahead as 2080, through TransLink and their planners. Highway 99 through to the year 2080 did not give ridership projections that would support light rail or SkyTrain systems” is so utterly ill-informed that either he is ignorant or deliberately misleading. What is called SkyTrain is actually a

light-metro, which modern light rail made obsolete decades ago. Why? Simply, LRT is far cheaper to build, far cheaper to maintain and operate, has a higher capacity and is flexible in operation. Light rail is a mode that can deal economically with traffic flows of between 2,000 and 20,000 passengers per hour per direction, thus effectively bridging the gap between the maximum flow that can be dealt with using buses and the minimum that justifies a metro. The Canada Line, which is a heavy rail metro, built as a light metro and presently has much less capacity than a modern streetcar! No

wonder TransLink and Flemming are misleading both the voter and taxpayer! The current cost to extend the Expo Line to Langley is now around $400 million/km all found. For one km of Canada line we could build eight to 11 km of modern LRT and have a transit system that from the start have a much higher capacity than the present Canada Line’s maximum. Cannabis stores: enough is enough Editor: I am reading with dismay about the opening of all those Cannabis stores and agree fully with Coun. Lois Jackson when is enough, enough? I operate a store at the Delta Shoppers Mall in North Delta where there has been a cannabis store in operation for a couple of months. Cannabis makes me ill, along with cigarette smoke and many a days I

feel intoxicated from the unwillingly inhaled cannabis that is permeating the air. It is shameful to have to see the proliferation of cannabis, particular where it pertains to young people. Apparently the destruction of health through smoking of vapes, cannabis and cigarettes is promoted more than any other form of activity as it brings in the

masses more to spend their money. I keep hearing people lamenting the fact that the cost of living has become so expensive and I know there are many affected by the current financial challenges, however, the problem could not be spread too wide, judging by the delinquent behavior of society and not just the young. Renate Meinicke

Make your own Canada Day flag Editor: I would like to thank Mr. Ted Olak for his letter (Optimist, June 9). During the last year I was embarrassed and disgusted by the displays of our flag for selfish purposes. We have never been a big flag waving people. We see it on Canada Day,

Remembrance Day and at the occasional international sporting event. I still eye it with misgiving today. Mr. Olak talks of starting a movement. I have an idea. Make a small Canadian flag. Make it yourself with your own hands. Draw it on a little piece of paper just big enough for some-

one to see it if they get up close. Mine measures 1x2 inches. It is not perfect. Just like our country. But we’re trying to be better. Better in how we treat each other, especially if we think we are different. On Canada Day I will pin it on my shirt. Just over my heart. Brad Brush

An open letter to the Delta Pickleball Association Our Grade 6/7 class was given an amazing opportunity to learn how to play pickleball and use the courts closest to the school grounds. We applied and received an official permit from Delta Parks to use two of the dedicated pickleball courts every Wednesday and Friday from April until June. An amazing group of volunteers helped us learn the basic rules of pickleball and we were excited to

put these skills to the test. On the final afternoon of our pickleball lessons, we were greeted by some unfriendly pickleball members. We were told that they were having their own tournament and that we couldn’t use the courts. Despite having a permit, we were not offered the courts we were promised. They recognized that we had access to these courts, but we were still denied. Instead, we were sent to the tennis courts. Only two courts were available to share

between 26 students. Needless to say, it was a disappointment for our class. One student was keen to share their feelings about this negative interaction: “I felt like I didn’t belong there.” In the future, we hope to see a schedule posted on the courts to be visible to all users. We also hope that we will be met by more kindness the next time we use the pickleball courts. Division 1, Ladner Elementary

I found several of the comments from the Community Action for Equity and Racial Justice Committee quite disturbing and not logical. The Action 4 Canada float and their founding principles have nothing to do with equity or racism. A4C is a group of citizens, parents and

infiltration and the Delta Hospice or dangerous rhetoric? On the point of people remaining silent, the A4C group, in the interest of children’s health and well-being, also chose to “take a stand and not be a bystander.” Shouldn’t they be given the same courtesy that

had to say and why this committee chose to speak under the umbrella of “Equity and Racial Justice” is beyond logic and begs the question for whom? And also how and why are they relating the two issues, except to include some dangerous rhetoric of their own? S. Price

Happy Father‛s Day!

Be a part of the solution, not the problem An open letter to Delta council It is truly interesting that the City of Delta has asked for public feedback on the environment. There has been serious opposition from the medical profession, a number of Metro Vancouver cities including Vancouver, New Westminster and Richmond and indigenous, environmental and other groups. Given the serious environmental, health and welfare concerns, why is Delta council not also opposing the incredibly harmful proposals for Tilbury Island? On what basis does council continue to support the Tilbury LNG expansion projects? Coun. Dylan Kruger, who also chairs the Climate Action and

Community Liveability Advisory Committee has -in fact- sent a letter to the Environmental Assessment process supporting the project. The reasons given for his endorsement are as follows: “The Tilbury Marine Jetty Project will help advance our climate action goals as we work towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment. LNG is a safe and environmentallyresponsible energy choice for marine shipping and is an important step towards reducing emissions, air pollutants, and underwater noise.” These comments could be almost a direct quote from a Fortis presentation and can easily be dismissed as inaccurate. LNG is not safe nor envi-

ronmentally responsible. It is an extreme fossil fuel that damages our environment and poses a health and safety risk to the citizens of Delta and the Lower Mainland. The only letters to the EAO supporting the Fortis proposals are from companies and people that stand to benefit from the proposals. We raise these questions as citizens of Delta that have made efforts to research and understand the environmental and health impacts of an expanded LNG operation in Delta. As long as our council supports the Tilbury proposals, we are not part of the climate crisis solution. This makes us a part of the problem. Friends of Tilbury Tsawwassen

Loss of street parking a big issue raised at open house

Delta collecting feedback on 44 Avenue bike lane project IAN JACQUES

Concerns over the loss of on-street parking was top of mind for residents who attended a public open house June 9 about the 44 Avenue bike lane project in Ladner. According to the City of Delta, 25 residents came out to share concerns and get information on the project which at this point includes marked buffered on-street cycle lanes, a defined parking lane along the north side of 44 Avenue as well as the removal of on-street parking along the south side of 44 Avenue for cycling lanes. Director of engineering Steven Lan said besides concerns over the parking issues, residents also

expressed support for improving cycling connections within the city. “We are here to listen to everyone. I want to reassure everyone that we are only at a very early design stage and we want to make sure we hear from residents and address their concerns as much as we can,” said Lan. “We will be coming back to the community and also to council with a revised design and also noting their concerns so they can see how those have been addressed.” Lan said long-term, the city, through their draft Cycling Master Plan, is looking at improving active transportation across the community. “Certainly this is one of the corridors that is really important. There is a

connection from Dugald Morrison all the way out to Ladner Elementary,” he said. “There is a separate phase of this project along 44th between Arthur Drive and Ladner Elementary that has a multi-use pathway. That is about to start construction. This side, which we are talking about here, is just in its early consultation stage. What we have put forward is cycling lanes on the roadway to provide a better facility. We will look at how we can address those parking concerns. We want to ensure we listen and have the right solution.” Lan said staff will be updating council and circulating the revised design for another round of consultations later this summer.

The Future of Aging in Tsawwassen was the topic of discussion at a Seniors Week kick-off luncheon at KinVillage on Friday, June 3. Guest speakers included Terry Lake, CEO of the BC Care Providers Association; BC Seniors Advocate Isobel MacKenzie; Susan Ryan, seniors’ director of the Green House Project; and KinVillage CEO Dan Levitt. MacKenzie provided a presentation on the seniors’ population in the province and the challenges facing health care providers, while Ryan offered up thoughts on the Green House model of care, which has been successful in 31 U.S. states. Ryan was in the province making several presentations alongside MacKenzie as part of Seniors Week in B.C. as well, she was presenting at a health conference in Whistler. Levitt also provided a brief overview on the capital campaign that KinVillage is undertaking to help support the re-development of the KinVillage campus. More details on that capital campaign will be released in the coming weeks.

In preparation for the completion of the Highway 91/17 work is planned near the Highway 91C and Nordel Way intersection from June 30 to July 4, including: Various lane closures on Highway 91C between Highway 17 and Highway 91. One lane will remain open in both directions. Full closure of Nordel Way between River Way and Highway 91C. There will be no vehicle access to Nordel Way from Highway 91C. Cyclists will continue to use the existing cycling detour between Highway 17 and Nordel Way.

Please see maps for work locations and River Road detour routes. Road users can (approximately 30+ minutes) throughout the area and should plan to take alternative routes. Work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary to July 8-11 and July 15-18, 2022. Ferry Road boat launch to be replaced The City of Delta has issued a request for proposals for the design of a rebuilt boat launch at Ferry Road. The current boat launch is located at the end of Ferry Road, north of Admiral Way, adjacent to Captain’s Cove Marina’s work yard. According to the city, the existing concrete ramp and floating dock sections are approaching the end of their ser-

vice life “and complete replacement is required to ensure the continued function of this important community amenity.” The city is soliciting proposals from qualified engineering firms or individuals with relevant experience in marine engineering to develop design drawings for the complete replacement of the exiting boat launch. The resulting design

must include, among other things, complete replacement of the concrete and asphalt ramps, existing timber boardwalk as well as roadway asphalt paving on the approach to the ramps. Once the preliminary design has been finalized, Delta will seek approvals from provincial and federal authorities prior to proceeding to the detailed design stage. The city notes that the

exact duration of time required to obtain the approvals is unknown, however, it is anticipated that the detailed design phase would start no sooner than eight months following finalization of the preliminary design. It’s to be completed within two months of Delta’s direction to proceed, once approvals have been secured. -Sandor Gyarmati

The pandemic has certainly put a wrench in the Delta Police Foundation’s usual community outreach events but, this year, they’re adding something new to their roster, and everyone is invited. The Summer Solstice Run, Walk & Roll 5km race will take place on June 22, starting at 7 p.m. from the Delta Police Department headquarters in Ladner. “I really wanted to try to find something that would get the name of the Delta Police Foundation out there and make some money for the foundation, but more importantly, just have a community event. It’s been such a long haul where we have not been able to gather together,” says Lisa Eastwood, a director on the foundation’s board and organizer of the run. Registrants will receive a race package full of different goodies, which include running caps (for the first 190 registrants) and water bottles with a design from Tsawwassen First Nation artist Karl Morgan, gift cards to local ice cream spots, pens, granola bars and various candy. There will timing chips

Earthwise tackles food insecurity with community-based approach Achieving food security is truly a community effort. Earthwise Society is the lead agency for the Delta Food Coalition (DFC), a network of community groups collaborating to tackle food security through innovative food redistribution programs that are making a real difference to vulnerable Delta residents. During the past two years, Earthwise Society’s Harvest Box Program has established itself as a key Delta food security program that has helped hundreds of families. Earthwise is getting ready to launch the program again for 2022. The goal of Harvest Box is to increase food security and reduce food waste by sourcing extra produce from local community members, farms, and grocery stores, and redistributing it to those in need. Earthwise works in

partnership with DFC organizations to provide weekly boxes of fresh, local produce to vulnerable residents. In addition to offering food support, Harvest Box aims to increase food literacy by introducing people to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and providing them with weekly newsletters with tips on preparation and storage, fun recipes, and nutrition highlights. Last year, Earthwise rescued more than 4,500 pounds of produce and donated more than 430 harvest boxes to those in need. This year, Earthwise hopes to expand the program and provide assistance to even more individuals. For those who would like to help Earthwise reach their goals, there are a number of ways to get involved. Through Earthwise, volunteers can sign up to assist with various food security initiatives, all of

which help support the Harvest Box program. These include Shared Harvest, which sends volunteers to local homes to pick excess fruit, and FoodMesh, a surplus food rescue program for Save-On Foods in which volunteers help rescue and redirect excess grocery items. Home gardeners who would like to play an active role in the local food system can join the Don’t Mow, Grow Victory Garden program to receive seeds, ongoing gardening support, and educational opportunities in return for donating some of their crops. If you would like to make a tangible difference to a local family this season, Earthwise would love to hear from you. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, or to sponsor a Harvest Box, please contact info@ earthwisesociety.bc.ca. -Submitted

Myrtle’s hot dog day this Saturday After a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, The Wexford’s biggest event of the year has returned! Myrtle’s Famous New York and Chicago-style dogs will be available at a family-friendly event raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society of BC on Saturday, June 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Long-time Tsawwassenites fondly remember waiting in line at Myrtle’s Famous Hotdogs to savour a classic New York or Chicagostyle dog right in the heart of Tsawwassen town centre. These days, Myrtle’s fans have just one chance a year to get their hands on the coveted dogs. And John Meier, the owner of Myrtles Hot Dog Cart, has already heard from fans who will travel from around Metro Vancouver to for a little taste of Coney Island.

“A Chicago Dog is not a real Chicago Dog without super green relish and sports peppers,” said Meier. “We import gallons of these just for this event.” He named his business in memory of his Grandma Myrtle, who was the first to introduce young John to the famous Coney Island hotdog. For five years, he served hot dogs that would make Grandma Myrtle proud. He hung up his tongs after unsuccessfully attempting to find a brick and mortar location for Myrtle’s, a disappointment for Tsawwassen hot dog lovers but a boon for residents at The Wexford, where he joined the Recreation Team. “In the three years we did this event before the pandemic, we served 1,100 hot dogs and raised more than $12,000,” he

said. “It’s pretty incredible to see our community make a significant contribution to research and support for those living with Alzheimer’s.” This year, for a $10 donation, diners can enjoy: a Myrtle’s classic New York Dog served with sauerkraut, mustard and fried onions; Myrtle’s traditional Chicago Dog includes mustard, super green relish, dill pickle spear, tomato wedges, sweet onions, sports peppers and celery salt on a poppy seed bun or The Wexford’s South Asian Special Dog with curried mayo, mango-papaya salsa and Haloumi Cheese. “We’re pretty excited to be able to invite our neighbours and friends out to join us for a good party; it’s something we’ve missed these past two years,” says Jane Bryce, General Manager at The Wexford.

City staff prepares for another heat dome SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta has developed a communications strategy and is taking other steps to be better prepared in case of another deadly heat dome. In step with the provincial government, Delta is addressing concerns about a heat wave that last year was attributed to many deaths. “This incident demonstrates how vulnerable people can be found throughout the community, not just the unhoused,” said a recent staff report to Delta council. “Most of the deaths last summer were elderly people living alone at home. This means we need to rethink how we are providing emergency services during periods of extreme weather, whatever time of the year they may occur.” During the heat event last summer, Delta opened cooling centres in municipal buildings and libraries equipped with air conditioning. They were not open 24/7, however. In preparation for a potential repeat this summer, staff developed a communications strategy and will take additional steps in advance including updating Delta’s Extreme Heat Response Plan, creating ‘Beat the Heat’ posters and a page on the city’s website with information and resources to help the public prepare for and survive heat dome events, including an interactive map of

cooling centres. Council recently approved a plan to designate municipal facilities in North Delta, Tsawwassen and Ladner for use as 24/7 cooling centres during Level 2 BC Heat Alert Response, as well as using Delta’s seniors’ buses to transport people to and from centres. The city is also setting up a 24-hour information phone line to provide information about centre locations, transportation options and resources. The city, among other things, will also look at options to accommodate pets during extreme heat events and look at the feasibility of installing temporary misting stations and/or portable water stations at key locations throughout Delta. The city will also participate in provincial and regional emergency management discussions about a coordinated response and resources to respond to extreme heat events. Also, city staff will work with community partners, such as Deltassist and Options, to ensure messaging reaches as many people as possible and vulnerable people at risk are identified and assisted. It was in late June 2021 when British Columbia experienced an unprecedented extreme heat event, with record temperatures in many parts of the province lasting for several days. The BC Corners Service notes that temperatures began to rise on June 24 and continued increasing to a peak

on June 28 and 29. At its peak, temperatures reached more than 40 degrees Celsius in many parts of the province. Overnight temperatures also remained uncharacteristically high throughout this period. The BC Coroners Service says more than 800 deaths were investigated between June 25 and July 1, with 619 deaths later identified as heat-related. The findings from coroner investigations reviewed by an expert panel show, among things, that 98 per cent of deaths occurred indoors. There was also a lag between the heat alerts issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada and public agencies. The findings are contained in a recently released report Extreme Heat and Human Mortality: A Review of Heat-Related Deaths in B.C. in Summer 2021, released by the BC Coroners Service. The panel identified the need for a coordinated heat alert response system in B.C., identification and support of vulnerable populations, as well as implementation of prevention and longer-term risk mitigation strategies to prevent loss of life. The province recently announced it is launching the BC Heat Alert and Response System (BC HARS) to help ensure people, First Nations communities and local governments have the tools they need to stay safe during heat events.

Performance Car Event raises funds for Reach

The spirit of participants in the May Rally for Reach was in no way dampened by the rain. Reach Child and Youth Development

Society children and families were treated to a close-up look at the high performance cars of the Driver’s Experience Gruppe (DXG).

In an extraordinary show of generosity, car club owners raised more than $15,000 in registration fees to support children with extra needs

at Reach Society as well as coming out to show them their cars including a Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren and top of the line Porsches and Audis.

The event began with a Delta Police escort bringing the exotic cars in formation to Reach Child Development Centre in Ladner. Once parked three deep in front, Reach children were able to sit in and take pictures of the vehicles. A surprise awaited in the trunk of one of the cars with car themed and other toys for children to pick from to take home with them. There were far more toys than children present so the remainder were donated to Reach programs for use in sessions. The DXG arranged for free food from the Holy

Masala food truck for families and Starbucks provided free coffee and passion-tea to all participants. “We are so grateful to Moe and Zeaffrey Khalik, DXG co-founders, who had the desire to create this amazing fundraiser that both the DXG members and our children big and small enjoyed so much,” said Reach development manager Kristin Bibbs. “The grins were huge and energy high despite the rain, and we would like to send a huge thank you to everyone at DXG for their community spirit and generosity!”

Delta Secondary School’s 2022 graduation class now includes a national champion. Culinary arts student Leila Pourshahriary has captured the baking category for secondary students at the prestigious 2022 Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) which wrapped up on May 27 at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. The event featured more than 350 students

and apprentices from across the country competing for the title of national champion in more than 45 skilled areas. Medals were awarded to the top competitors in six skilled trade and technology sectors, including transportation, construction, manufacturing and engineering, information technology, services and employment. The competitors were evaluated based on strict industry standards. Pourshahriary initially won the provincial stage where her task was to cre-

ate a decorated cookie and bar cake with 1920s themes as well as a bread of the world within a 7.5 hours timed period. Her cookie was a lemon pate sable decorated with royal icing in a typical 1920s pattern. She then baked two loaves of Japanese milk bread before finishing the competition with orange chiffon sponge bar cake with chocolate pastry cream. She decorated the cake in a 1920s theme, complete with feathers, carnations and pearls. Pourshahriary created

the same items for nationals except had 30 minutes less in preparation time. According to DSS culinary arts teacher and chef Lori Pilling, she is the first DSS student to win at nationals. “When Leila came to me in Grade 10 she was already amazing at it,” said Pilling. “She was baking at home with her parents, so she already had a super good foundation. In Grade 11 (amid COVID) we did online schooling and the students had to submit videos and Leila’s were all amazing.” Pourshahriary enhanced her skills by signing up for the Delta School District’s Youth In Trades Program, which took her to Vancouver Community College’s

(VCC) downtown campus for 24-weeks (July to December) of learning at the post-secondary level. It was at the end of her time at VCC where the two students with the highest marks were selected to be trained for the Skills Canada. Pilling added the sky is the limit for the potential of her prize student who developed a passion for baking on her own. Pourshahriary plans to return to VCC to enroll in the Advanced Cakes course then work on her apprenticeship. “My mom did some baking but I learned a lot online just watching Youtube videos and TV shows too,” she said. “I just wanted to try new things.”

Richmond/Delta Youth Choir wins national awards IAN JACQUES

An outstanding performance from members of the Richmond/Delta Youth Choir garnered several national awards from the recent Musicfest Canada competition. The Junior Strings received first place for the National Gold Standard, conductor Bo Peng was presented with the NAC Outstanding Music Director Award and music director Stephen Robb was presented with an award for recording editing – the second time he has been presented the honour. “It is outstanding performances,” said Peng. “As a director and conductor, I am amazed by their [the students] concentration, devotion and endurance to make these fine productions.” Peng said the pandemic created a host of chal-

lenges for the community youth orchestra – namely lack of rehearsal spaces, performance opportunities and funding. “Even in the past two years we, like other youth orchestras, struggled with Zoom rehearsals, which made it extremely difficult for music making,” he said. “Fortunately we had great parents and students who were willing to sacrifice their spring break for this competition. “We spent two Saturday’s in March to make this incredible competition video at Genesis Theatre in Ladner, which what was judged and won us the awards. It is so rewarding for the students and the parents to see all of their hard work pay off.” The RDYO is operated by the BC Youth Music Society, a registered charity. Since 1971, the RDYO has provided a profes-

sional orchestral preparation program for young musicians. The orchestra provides a type of musical instruction that is not commonly available for children and youth - instruction and performance opportunities in an ensemble setting. For many youth, the RDYO is a social as well as an educational opportunity, as the young musicians are able to meet other young people who share their passion for music. The orchestra currently serves approximately 160 young musicians aged six to 25 in a levelled program from Junior Strings and Junior Winds to Symphony. Young musicians come from a variety of communities in Metro Vancouver, including Richmond, Delta, Burnaby, Vancouver, Surrey, New Westminster, North Delta, and White Rock.

Indigenous Peoples Day June 21

A statement from TFN Chief Ken Baird 2022 National Indigenous Peoples Day is an important holiday to celebrate the wealth and diversity of Indigenous culture and heritage. On this day we hold up our hands to honour each of the ancestors who came before us. Their leadership and their resilience through the dark times of colonization forged the path for the Tsawwassen People to be the strong, self-governing First Nation that we are today, and continues to give us strength for our future generations. Naut’sa mawt, in our traditional Hul’q’umi’um language, means working together as one. While National Indigenous Peoples Day is a cel-

Indigenous perspectives, and embracing opportunities for meaningful reconciliation. As your close neighbour, Tsawwassen First Nation looks forward to opportunities to share our culture, history, and world view with the residents of Delta in Naut’sa mawt.

Kim Baird recipient of B.C. Reconciliation Award

Former Tsawwassen First Nation Chief and current Chancellor of Kwantlen Polytechnic University Kim Baird, is among the recipients of the second British Columbia Reconciliation Award. The award recognizes six extraordinary individuals and organizations who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, respect and commitment to furthering reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in British Columbia or inspired others to continue reconciliation efforts. The Office of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, in partnership with BC Achievement Foundation announced the recipients which also included: T łaḵwagila, Chief Bill Cranmer (Alert Bay), and Brendan Eshom (Prince Rupert). Organization recipients included Atomic Cartoons in partnership with GBH (Vancouver), DIVERSEcity - Surrey Local Immigration Partnership (Surrey) and Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops (Kamloops). Baird is an accomplished leader, a respected advocate for Indigenous people, and is nationally recognized for her work in Reconciliation. She is a graduate of KPU, receiving the Distinguished Alumni award in 2012. Her life work has provided a foundation that will create the opportunity for the process of Reconciliation to exist/

thrive. This includes acknowledging that First Nations have a right to selfdetermination, a quality of life equal to all, and in partnership with all people. At the age of 28 she was the elected Chief of the TFN. She held this important position for six terms, from 1999 to 2012. In that role her most notable achievements towards Reconciliation took place. On behalf of TFN, she negotiated B.C.’s first urban modern treaty, which came into effect on April 3, 2009. The treaty provided unprecedented benefits and opportunities, and her leadership contributed to TFN being one of the most progressive First Nations in Canada. She says, “true Reconciliation” means “no longer being tethered to the Indian Act, and gaining access to financial resources and economic opportunities, and to services and programs for TFN members.” In the spirit of the BC Reconciliation Award, she believes that respect must go beyond Aboriginal rights and title. It needs to be reflected in laws, policies, and in the operations of government and the courts. To support this ongoing quest, she now runs her own consulting firm and continues to share her expertise on many public and private boards, working tirelessly to serve her community in both official and unofficial capacities. -Submitted by Gov. of B.C.

On June 21, we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day during this sacred time for our Indigenous neighbours and friends. Join us in honouring Indigenous Peoples' culture, heritage, resilience, and contributions while reflecting on history. June is also National Indigenous History Month and we encourage you to learn about the important history of Indigenous Peoples, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, and their distinct heritage, languages, and cultural practices and beliefs. Delta acknowledges that we are on the shared, traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the scəaθən, xʷməθkʷəyəm, and other Coast Salish Peoples. The City of Delta believes in strong relationships with its First Nations neighbours. We value and foster these relationships as we are working towards Reconciliation with our Indigenous partners. At her very core, Rhiannon Bennett is a truth teller – even when that truth is hard to hear. As a Musqueam matriarch, activist, Decolonization educator and community figure, most of us in Delta know Bennett for her work around equity, justice and accountability. We perhaps recognize her from hosting Decolonization workshops with Andrea Hilder as part of their consulting firm Hummingbirds Rising, from speaking at community events or perhaps from her time as a Delta School Board trustee. But Bennett hasn’t always been this visible in Delta. “Honestly, for a long time, I didn’t see myself in the community. I felt very invisible, parts of me were invisible. It’s messed with my identity, growing up in Ladner ... For most of my life, it’s like there are parts of me that are welcome and are seen, but then there’s other parts that have to be not talked about,” says Bennett. This feeling of conditional acceptance from the community is one that still lingers with her to this day. And because of this, she’s still deeply invested in making Delta a safer, more inclusive space for everyone to live, work and play in. “I often wonder what other people think that my intentions and my goals are ... because all I’m trying to do is to be able to stand in the wholeness of my identity. My family has been here since this land has existed and we are worthy of being able to be ourselves and to be recognized,” says Bennett. “I just genuinely just want the world to be a better place.” Through her years of Decolonization work and relationship building in our community, Bennett has observed the Delta community brushing over conflict with the Musqueam Indian Band and Tsawwassen First Nation. “It feels like there are secrets in town that people don’t want to talk about, and people still go to great lengths to detach themselves from it,” she says. She highlights how Delta has been ground zero for Musqueam and Tsawwassen victories, but that these victories, like the Sparrow Decision and the Tsawwassen Treaty, happened in spite of the community’s opposition. For reference, the historically significant “Sparrow Case” was based on Musqueam member Ronald (Bud) Sparrow being arrested in 1984 for fishing with a net that was longer than his government-imposed fishing licence

permitted. Six years after Sparrow’s arrest – after the Musqueam community argued and repeatedly appealed his conviction in defense of their own and all Indigenous peoples’ rights – the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the Musqueam’s right to fish was still intact before the 1982 Constitution and therefore still existed at the time of his arrest. It was a defining moment for recognizing and affirming Indigenous rights in Canada, reads UBC’s Indigenous Foundations information resource website. But in this age of reconciliation, it has become increasingly clear to Bennett how some folks want to skip straight to a happy ending without acknowledging the history and their own complicity in systems that continue to harm Indigenous communities. “Now, everybody’s celebrating Indigenous peoples, but people in this town fought us ... Actions need to back up the words. So, what are you doing? How are those relationships being repaired?” she says. Despite the pushback and the exclusion she’s faced, Bennett remains committed and passionate about her work because it truly is an extension of who she is and what she’s about. “I see flashes of change, and I see flashes of opportunity and I see the desire that all those little ripples will turn into bigger waves and the waves will keep getting bigger and bigger ... When I think about the connections and the relationships I’ve made through this work, it’s been so incredible,” she says. Indigenous Peoples Day June 21

What National Indigenous Day means to me In my opinion, National Indigenous Day is a time for celebration for all Canadians, but especially for Indigenous communities and their citizens, including my community, Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) There are so many communities whether they are First Nation, Inuit or Metis that are Indigenous to their territories in this country. There are about 200 First Nations in B.C. alone. This is such a wealth of culture, language and traditions that we should all treasure. As former chief of Tsawwassen First Nation, I am proud of the revitalization of language and culture we are seeing in our community. This is in large part because of our modern treaty with self-governance that our people agreed to enter

into with the governments of Canada and British Columbia over a decade ago. The treaty has enabled economic development which has allowed the government of Tsawwassen First Nation to invest in improving our quality of life. Before the treaty, our socioeconomic statistics were comparable to the deplorable and shameful conditions that First Nations across Canada have been facing since colonization. In addition, we have been investing into our language and culture revitalization. This has been in our laws, regulations, policies and programs. We have tools to support our distinct art and this is becoming more visible every month. Tsawwassen Mills is filled with art and design elements - all from TFN

with many of the new buildings going up in our community. We have increased investment in language preservation and learning in our community. We are proud to

see the recent number of young Tsawwassen members graduating from language training in partnership with SFU. New resources are making a difference in our cultural resurgence and revitalization. And I say resurgence, because we sustained ourselves in this region for millennia. Our language, Hən̓ q̓ əmin̓ əm̓ , documents much of our culture and knowledge. The oldest carbon date found at an archaeological site is 4,200 years old, but our elders say we have been at scəw̓ aθən (Tsawwassen) since time immemorial. And our resilience and survival have been because of our culture as xwélmexw (First Nation people.) Our distinct language and culture are a great rallying point of celebra-

tion. When I think of National Indigenous Day, I celebrate the diverse Indigenous cultures that are thriving across the country, and have been on this continent long before Europeans settled Canada. We can all celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day by being open to learn. Ideas for you to celebrate include, going to an event, reading a book, registering for a course, supporting an Indigenous business or any other activity you and your family choose to celebrate. Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day. Kwuntiltunaat (Kim Baird) Chancellor of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and Former chief of Tsawwassen First Nation

It’s deeply emotional to hold a piece of history in your hands left behind hundreds or even thousands of years ago, but especially when the piece

is from your own ancestors. Interning at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology (MOA), Kelsey Sparrow has had the opportunity to do exactly that – to hold a 400 to 800-year-old cedar root

basket uncovered on the Musqueam reserve, in the mud banks at the mouth of the Fraser River. The Coast Salish, Musqueam and Ojibwe artist who grew up in Ladner has been focus-

National Indigenous Day is a day to recognize and celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures, and histories of the First Nations peoples of Canada. It is Central Walk’s great privilege to sponsor $10000 in support of the first National Indigenous Day in Tsawwassen. In the future, we hope to work closely together with our First Nations communities to build Tsawwassen into an even more vibrant neighborhood that honourss and promotes First Nations cultures and traditions.

ing mainly on “wet-site basketry” since beginning MOA’s Indigenous Internship Program last October, and the cedar root basket they got to hold during their first week is part of that. “Wet-site archaeology is a whole field of archaeology where things have been preserved in really low-oxygen environments, [like in mud around bodies of water], for sometimes thousands of years,” says Sparrow. Some of the wet-site baskets at MOA have been carbon dated to be 4,000 years old, preserved by environments that prevent bacteria from eating away the organic materials that otherwise would be broken down over time “The thing with wet-site basketry and any other wet-site archaeology is,

as soon as it’s unearthed, you have to do measures right away to take care of it. Because if it dries out, it basically just disintegrates,” they say. Compared to other more-established conservation practices, wetsite conservation is still developing and therefore doesn’t have a documented protocol yet. “One of [MOA’s] goals is to develop a kind of protocol around it so that communities around B.C., if they have wet-site basketry, they can have a protocol to follow to conservate it themselves at their cultural institutions,” says Sparrow. Wet-site basketry conservation also offers a look into historical weaving practices. “Some of the artists who come to visit MOA are weavers, and some-

times they’ll look at old basketry and realize, ‘Wait, this was woven in a completely different way than we do.’ And they’ll figure it out just from looking at it how to recreate that,” says Sparrow. The uncovered baskets also provide visual evidence of land occupation and territory. “The ethics of how all these objects came into the collection, I struggle with sometimes, but I feel like it’s more important to have Indigenous people there working on taking care of these objects and being stewards,” they say. “It just feels good to be able to take care of them the way they should be taken care of ... It’s really rewarding.” If you’re interested in Sparrow’s art see more at: https://kelseysparrow. com/.

Islanders hosting lacrosse event for National Indigenous Peoples Day Double header against New West set for June 22 at the Ladner Leisure Centre IAN JACQUES

The Delta Islanders are hosting a doubleheader lacrosse event to recognize National Indigenous People’s Day. Delta will play host to the New Westminster Salmonbellies on June 22 at the Ladner Leisure Centre. First up at 6 p.m. is the Junior B Tier 1 game followed by the B.C. Junior A game at 8:30 p.m. There will be food, a 50/50 draw and a silent auction with all proceeds going to the Orange Shirt Society, Moose Hide Campaign and Residential School Survivors Society. Islanders president Matt Hoegg said the idea

behind the event started last year. “At the end of last season, coach Nathan Wilson thought it would be a great idea for us to have a third jersey designed around the Tsawwassen First Nations original lacrosse logo,” said Hoegg. “And we could wear it at or around National Indigenous People’s Day, so that started the conversation. Then we thought why don’t we do an event, and as it turns out, we were double booked with the Tier 1 and Junior A on the same day on June 22, so this is amazing – we can do a lacrosse double header and make an event of it.” The jerseys have been designed by Tsawwassen

First Nation artist Karl Morgan. “Getting the jersey’s going was the first part. Then we touched base with New West and the league and everyone was on board and super supportive of the idea. We’ve had great support,” he said. “We’re really excited. This is long overdue in Delta. We have such an amazing lacrosse community and such a supportive Indigenous community as well. I think this will become an annual event.” Hoegg said during the game a silent auction will be held where lacrosse fans can bid on the jersey’s which will then be presented to the winning bidder after the game.

Minister’s minute: parenting ANDREAS BASSON

Li fe C h u rc h

Being a parent is one of the greatest honours and privileges we get here on earth. With this honour, I know personally, comes a wide range of emotions such as uncertainty, fear, anger, love, joy... Even if you have read all the books and manuals on how to parent, you probably are still left with many unanswered questions. This is normal however, we have found as parents of three kids, that the instructions and guidelines we find in the Bible are above the rest; life-giving, clear, and rewarding. The Bible is our greatest resource for raising our children well. The Bible reminds us that

God loves our children even more than we do and that His plans for them are bigger than we could ever hope or imagine. No matter what parenting challenges you are facing right now, no matter what season you are, you can know that when you choose to do things His way in raising them, He will carry you! “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 So where do we begin? It begins with prayer, and not just when you’re in a difficult situation or just before you eat a meal. No, it is a constant

dialogue with God your Father. Simple prayers like “Lord, I’m overwhelmed… Help me, please. The house is a mess, and the kids are crying. I need your help.” Or, “Thank you, Jesus, for my children and for the amazing plans you have for them. Thank you that you are protecting and guiding them and that I know your love surrounds them.” Prayer is powerful and you need it when it comes to raising your children. It will bring peace to your heart and also opens up a way for God to bring about His amazing plans. God has a plan. He always does! God’s plans for them are bigger than you could ever hope or imagine, and in the end, your child belongs to the Lord.

are manual brushing, or grainy exfoliants. These methods work well on the body but are often too abrasive on sensitive facial skin.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) are found in sugar, milk, and citrus fruits. The most common forms used are lactic, glycolic and mandelic acids. Salicylic is a Beta Hydroxy Acid, (BHA) and is used primarily in oily, acne, congested skin types, as it’s best know for its ability to unclog the pores and provide an antiseptic action, thus clearing problematic skin.

Enzyme Exfoliants contain proteolytic enzymes, a fancy name for breaking down proteins that bind dead skin cells together. Some sources for enzyme exfoliants are Bromelain found in Pineapples, and Papain, found in Papaya. This type of exfoliant works well on all skin types but especially on a sensitive skin.

Physical exfoliation involves methods that simply slough off the very surface dead cells. Examples of physical exfoliation

FEEL GOOD Tsawwassen Optometry takes your eyes seriously. Some reasons why you should do the same.

1. The root to many larger causes. Did you know that some people first learn they may have serious health conditions from a routine eye exam? The overall health of your eyes can provide key information that extends beyond your vision. A comprehensive eye exam can detect underlying health issues such as early-onset diabetes, blood pressure concerns and high cholesterol. #214-1077 56th Street, Tsawwassen 604.943.6114

2. Say goodbye to dry eye. Optometry professionals can provide diagnostics and treatment for many conditions including dry eye and eye infections, ensuring your vision is as clear as possible. 3. Helping you in the long run. Some eye diseases don’t have any obvious early symptoms. Early detection of these eye diseases including glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration, is important to reduce long-term damage or even blindness. This is possible only with routine eye exams. 4. The eye is a roadmap. Getting a close-up look at the blood vessels, the optic nerves and other complex eye structures can contain clues to conditions that could pose a serious risk to your health. Advanced technology offers improved monitoring and detection.

BEAUTY HEALTH FITNESS

5. Do it for the kids. An eye exam is an important investment in children’s health. Children under 19 are covered for yearly eye exams by B.C Medical. Early treatment of childhood eye disorders are critical, as some of these conditions become more difficult to correct as a child ages. Whether you’re nearsighted, farsighted or have more specialized eye health needs, regular eye exams are an important part of preventative healthcare – regardless of your age or physical health. So do yourself and your eyes a favour by booking in for your next routine eye exam at Tsawwassen Optometry Clinic. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon.

ADVICE FROM THE

professionals

“How do I make sure my Will takes care of those I love and the causes I care for?”

I have been wearing dentures for many years and they are to the point that my gums are extremely sore and red: what can I do?

Having a legal Will can give you peace of mind knowing that your final wishes will be met and loved ones will be taken care of after you have gone. It also gives you the opportunity to make a meaningful gift in support of a charity that is near and dear to your heart, without giving up assets during your lifetime.

Soft tissue management is the answer you are seeking. Rehabilitation of soft tissues is primary. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove offensive organisms that may be contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues. Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Generally a second and or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before proceeding to the construction of new dentures. New dentures promote a healthy clean fitting surface for many years. If you have any questions regarding this procedure or any other denture related subject, please book your free consultation with us.

Making a gift through your Will can have significant tax savings for your estate and can help preserve more of your assets for your loved ones. When a gift is made, a charitable tax receipt is issued to your estate which can help to reduce or eliminate final taxes owning. ‘Partners for Tomorrow’ is a wonderful group of individuals who have made a promise to leave a future gift to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. Remembering Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation as part of your estate plans helps build a strong and vibrant future for the Delta Hospital Campus of Care which includes, Delta Hospital, Mountain View Manor and the Irene Thomas Hospice. If you are interested in leaving a bequest to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation in your Will, please contact: jodi.stokes@dhchfoundation.ca or call 604 940 9695. I received in the mail a flyer from a company coming to buy coins and gold. How do their prices compare to your prices?

What’s new with pneumonia protection?

This company comes into town from back east a few times a year. I had a mother and daughter come in who had an offer from them. I offered $2150 for the gold jewellery they had. This company had offered them $500.00. Another gentleman took silver dollars to them and then came to us.

Jim Richardson, owner

We paid him 300% more than they offered. My firm belief is that you could take your coins or gold to any reputable coin or gold dealer in the country and get more than these people offer. I believe that we could serve you better and offer more than they could ever hope to.

Great question. There are two pneumonia vaccines available for adults which may prevent respiratory infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae – an airborne bacterium which is responsible for many cases of pneumonia each year. Pneumococcal polysaccharide 23-valent (Pneumo23®) is free to all over 65 in BC and can be given at the same time as a flu shot. Pneumococcal conjugate 13-valent (Prevnar13®) is not free but may be covered by your private insurance (via a physician’s prescription) and is available to all adults over 50. Both vaccines are recommended and are very well tolerated. One dose of each in your lifetime is all that is required. South Delta Garden Club welcomes master gardener as next speaker The South Delta Garden Club (SDGC) is pleased to announce that educator and Master Gardener Megan Zeni will be the featured speaker at the South Delta Garden Club in-person meeting on Tuesday, June 21. The meeting is open to anyone interested in gardening. Zeni’s topic, Playful Gardening with Young

Children will focus on how homeowners can prepare their garden spaces so they feel inviting to young children. The presentation will highlight simple design features, which encourage playful exploration of private gardens. Zeni will also review child-friendly vegetables that can be strategically planted to engage children in the joys and wonders of

growing and harvesting. And with this year’s late start to the horticultural season, June is an ideal time to help inspire little people in the backyard. Zeni is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia. Her research interests include pedagogies of place and play in elementary schools. Zeni has 25 years of teaching

experience and currently teaches entirely outdoors in a K-7 outdoor and garden classroom. Zeni suggests that there is no age limit to starting children in the garden; infants enjoy the multi-sensory experience of being outdoors and can be laid out in shady garden spots. Kiddies at the crawling stage can enjoy the garden by being driven around in

a wheelbarrow. Toddlers can be given small tools to play with in the dirt as a way to begin to capture their interest. The pandemic has accelerated interest in the outdoors and provides a timely lens through which to teach children. A key principle that the educator emphasizes in her consulting work with schools and that also applies to parents and

grandparents introducing children and grandchildren to gardening is to not let the learning be adult-directed but rather child-originated. The meeting will be held at Ladner Christian Reformed Church at 4594 54A St., in Delta. Doors open at 7 p.m. Speaker presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. Entrance and parking are around the back. All are welcome.

Is there any way to make dental freezing and injections more pleasant and painless?

Looking for a quick get away over the summer?

Digital Anesthetic is a technology that controls flow rate and pressure of the anesthesia during the injection. This method is significantly more comfortable than the traditional dental syringe and employs a technique that makes the injection virtually painless. This type of freezing shortens treatment time for every patient and best of all, pain management for the patient is phenomenal. Some people don’t even realize that freezing is taking place. Dr. Raj Dhiman It’s nice to see children, who have never had dental 604-946-9588 anesthesia, leave their visit never having to experience the “anxiety” associated with “Syringe-Type” delivery methods. Many patients who work would never schedule a procedure in the middle of the day because of profound and lasting anesthesia. With Digital Anesthetic system, patients are now willing to come in at any time, knowing they will be able to communicate effectively at their job. This method of freezing greatly decreases anxiety associated with dental 130 – 4977 Trenant Street, Delta treatment and makes life easier for both the smile@ladnerdentist.com dental team and the patient.

I have hearing loss in both ears, but one is definitely worse than the other. Can I just get one hearing aid for now?

Can I get an equity take out on my mortgage to renovate my property or pay off my credit cards?

You can, but you probably shouldn’t.

Yes! Equity take outs can be obtained for a number of purposes, including financing home renovations or to consolidate credit card debt. The Government has changed mortgage rules however regarding taking equity out of your home. When looking at a refinance or equity take out the total mortgage cannot exceed 80% of a property value. If you are looking for funds to fund a dream kitchen or get rid of some of that high interest credit card debt … give me a call!

Cover one eye with your hand: notice how clarity, depth perception, and spatial awareness are effected? It’s not much different with our ears. Even if your hearing loss is predominately in one ear, wearing hearing aids in both can help with: • Sound distinction and speech understanding (it’s easier to be selective in what you listen to) • Sound detection (you can more reliably detect where sounds are coming from for social and safety reasons) • Sound quality • Brain stimulation (your brain likes getting equal inputs from both ears) • Listening ease (amplification in each ear is less tiring, straining and more satisfying) Just as we use both eyes to see our best, our two ears work together to help us hear our best!

Delta Pacers finish ninth at Ultimate provincials

MARK BOOTH

Delta Pacers capped off their breakthrough season with a ninth place finish at the recent B.C. Secondary Schools Ultimate (Frisbee) Championships in Surrey. Competing in the 16-team “AAA” Division for the province’s largest

schools, the Pacers narrowly missed a berth in the championship round after completing pool play with a 1-2 record. The highlight was a come-from-behind 8-2 win over Churchill that should have put Delta in position to secure second place. However, an 11-10 loss to Heritage Woods dashed those hopes. The Pacers

also fell 13-2 to eventual bronze medalist Guildford Park. Churchill went on to finish fourth, reflecting how competitive the group was. “The comeback win over Churchill should have put us in the top eight, except for one of our few poor performances in the year (in the loss to Heritage Woods) to end the day,”

said DSS coach Dave Jones, a volunteer parent. Looking to end a memorable season on a positive note, Delta produced wins over Okanagan Mission (114), Handsworth (8-7) and Point Grey (9-6) to crack the top 10. The result comes after a third place finish at the South Fraser

Championships that locked up the school’s first-ever trip to provincials. The team featured: Anisha Bilga, Keira MacLennan, Laurin Henry, Marley Day, Nicole Tilman, Sophie Tate, Tahnee SatoKlemm, Aimee Haverstock, Paisley Reid, Peighton

Tsawwassen blueliner among top picks in WHL Draft MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are hoping history repeats itself and Will Sharpe certainly wouldn’t mind that either. The 15-year-old blueliner from Tsawwassen was selected 11th overall by the Hurricanes in last month’s Western Hockey League Prospects Draft. Sharpe is coming off an outstanding season, captaining Yale Academy’s top U15 Prep team. “We are really excited to have Will on the Lethbridge Hurricanes,” said head scout Rob MacLachlan. “We had him in the top three defenceman all year and we didn’t stray from that at all. To pick him at No. 11, we are pretty ecstatic with that. He is a two-way defenceman. He can rush the puck. He can go endto-end. He can score goals. He is quick to get back on defence too.” It was exactly 22 years ago when the Hurricanes took another highly touted d-man from Tsawwassen, sixth overall in the draft. Brent Seabrook not only enjoyed four productive years in Lethbridge, but starred in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, winning three Stanley Cups.

“It’s something I really never thought about until my dad mentioned it,” said Sharpe. “Yeah, for sure I knew he played here.” Sharpe’s journey to becoming a top prospect is significantly different to Seabrook thanks to today’s player development structure. Sharpe came through South Delta Minor then aged up to skip his final year at the U13 (Pee Wee) level to join the Greater Vancouver Canadians Major Bantam team. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder then moved onto Yale where he cracked the Abbotsfordbased academy’s top team, although he played just a handful of games due to the pandemic and was also recovering from a foot injury. “It was a hard time for me,” Sharpe reflected. “I had to do lots of rehab to build back my strength and stuff. I battled through all the adversity by just training my heart out.” A full season awaited in the 2021/22 campaign and a now fully-healthy Sharpe thrived, compiling 42 points, including 19 goals, to rank fourth among all d-men scoring in the academy league. There were plenty of individual honours too, including being named Top Defenceman at the prestigious John Reid U15 AAA Memorial Tournament in

St. Albert back in January. WHL scouts took notice and it was just a matter of where Sharpe would be selected in the opening round. He thought he would be headed to Spokane at eighth overall until a draft day trade shook up the order. The next team he was in agreement to play for were the Hurricanes. “I know lots of NHL players who have played there and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “I’ve just heard a lot of great things about the organization including from (2019 Buffalo first round pick) Dylan Cozens’ dad.” He has been commuting daily from his Beach Grove home to Abbotsford with help from a car pool arrangement too. It’s a commitment that certainly is paying off with the plan to play for the academy’s U18 Prep team next season. He got a taste of the older level in three playoff call-up appearances this spring. “I had just heard lots of good things about the schooling and stuff and when I went for a tour it seemed very well structured,” added Sharpe, who also excelled in lacrosse before solely focusing on his hockey career. “My head coach and defensive coach have really helped me out a lot.” Sharpe’s head coach in Yale happened to be Brad Bowen who also

The hockey world can be small. Maybe small enough for Lethbridge to land another franchise defenceman from Tsawwassen.

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

BRETT, Gordon Hamilton February 7, 1938 to May 27, 2022 Gordon Hamilton Brett passed away at age 84 on May 27, 2022 from the effects of a devastating stroke in February. As a young man Gordon was a diesel plant operator in Churchill Manitoba, worked in the family funeral business in Vancouver then went into business renovating and building houses in Tsawwassen and Vancouver Island with his partner Herb. At age 40 he realized a lifelong desire to be a rancher. He moved his family to Walhachin and later to Westwald where he successfully raised cattle and hay. Gord could do anything he set his mind too. He was a loving father, husband and a loyal friend.

He will be sorely missed by his extended family, wife Joan and his children; Kelly (Grant) Frew, Shannon Brett (Jack), Tom (Beili) Brett, step-children; Sean (Jennifer) Boal, Andrea (James) Jacoby his grandchildren; Stevie (Gavin) and Wesley Frew, Adeline Brett, Sophie and Ben Boal, John and Ty Jacoby, greatgrandchildren; Kasper and Tova Landry. Gordon is also survived by his former wife Carol, sister Marlene Hood and nieces Cathy Trafford and Zena Carter. By request there will be no formal service, a celebration of Gordon’s life will be held at a later date.

CLENAHAN, Gordon Husband and father, Gordon passed away peacefully at home, May 20th 2022, after battling illness for the past couple of years. Born (March 3rd, 1938) and raised in Liverpool, Gordon grew up with his brother David and sister Jean, who both predeceased him. He graduated from Ellergreen Technical College, entered Engineering apprenticeship, then spent two years in National Service and returned to Engineering to complete certification as Senior Work Study Engineer. Gordon emigrated with his wife and two boys to Vancouver in 1966 to work for Dominion Bridge. Following a downturn in the bridge business Gordon entered and flourished in the automobile business, working for many years as Sales Manager for Don Docksteader Motors … ultimately owning his own car dealership, New Westminster Nissan. Having become divorced, Gordon met Laraine who became his wife and life-long partner of over 50 years. Following the end of this very successful career, Gordon and Laraine retired at their beautiful home on the waterfront in Beach Grove, where they shared a comfortable and leisurely life. Gordon was known for his quick wit, great sense of humour, uncanny memory (usually accurate), worldly wisdom, singing and storytelling. He had a fulfilling life enjoying multiple activities over the years, such as playing soccer, motorcycling, boating, golfing and traveling. Most recently he and Laraine ‘cruised’ extensively visiting over one hundred countries. He was a loyal supporter of his beloved Liverpool FC and never missed watching a game. For most of the latter part of his life, Gordon enjoyed playing golf, and as ‘gordfather’ organized many golf trips and schedules with his many close and cherished friends at Beach Grove Golf Club and Merseyside Club. Gord was predeceased by his youngest son Stuart and is survived by his wife Laraine, his son David, four grandchildren, and family in Canada and England. Gordon was much loved and will be greatly missed. We all will treasure the lovely memories he left us with and know that he lives on in a much better place. Farewell to our Gordon, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle and dear friend. A Celebration of Life will be held for Gordon at a later date.

ELMER, Jean Wilks October 3, 1926 − June 10, 2022 Goodbye to our sweet, sweet Mom, Nan, GG. Survived by her three daughters, Louise (Rainer) Hill, Beryl (Gary) Oborne and Janine DeVore; grandchildren Todd, Petra, Denise and Blair; and six great−grandchildren. Jean was a war bride, having met and married Roy Elmer (RCAF) in 1945 in Manchester. She sailed to Halifax on the Queen Mary and continued by train to what she thought was the end of the world to start her new life in Vancouver. Her and Roy worked in the florist industry. They saved and bought their first house in Richmond, where they raised the girls. They retired in Ladner, where despite being widowed for 29 years, Jean carried on and kept calm. Her greatest joys were family, friends, dogs, gardens, kids and travel. She enjoyed amazing vacations every year, thanks to her daughters. We have asked for comments that bring Jean to mind or things she used to say − some are: Oooooh, look at that dog. When I look at that picture, I can hear her laughing. Give us a hug. Bye bye for now, pet. An extraordinary, beautiful person. Lilliput Houses! EEEE, I sure fancy a cuppa and a biscuit. Look at those clouds, that one looks like a ___. A kind and lovely lady with a great sense of humour. Can you stay for a grilled cheese and tea? Enjoyed life and brought a little more laughter into others. The cheeky twinkle in her eye. One of a kind, true spirit. A wonderful lady who left an impression on all who knew her. The best friend you could wish for. To know her was to love her. TTFN.

TAYLOR, Mary Ellen December 14, 1922 − June 5, 2022 Mary Ellen was born and raised in Delta and lived there for the majority of her life. She was very creative, enjoyed crafting, was a painter, an avid reader, loved to travel and always enjoyed a good cup of tea. She was predeceased by her husband Norman, brother Roy, and son Pete. She leaves behind her daughter Lori (Inny), seven grandchildren, nine great−grandchildren and one great−great−grandchild.

Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary June 17th

HARRIS, James Edward October 10, 1938 - June 13, 2022 Jim consciously decided to take his journey to next level at the age of 83 with his family by his side. Jim will be deeply missed by his children; Valerie (Dave), Trevor (Lori), Jason (Pamela), his grandchildren; Melissa (Reg), Ashley, Riley, Spencer, Lucas, and his great grandchildren; Reece and Alina.

Jim was born in Ladner in 1938. His entire life was spent on Crescent Island as a 4th generation farmer. In his early years Jim was a well decorated motorcycle racer, racing competitively for Trev Deeley Harley-Davidson at Westwood Racetrack. He was always active, playing hockey, basketball, golf and tennis. Ever the adventurer, Jim earned his pilot licenses and flew the skies in his Beech Musketeer, then later in his Piper Comanche airplane. However, his true passion was skiing. Jim earned his Level 3 CSIA (Ski Instructor) certificate and showed his skills on the annual ski pilgrimage to Lake Tahoe. Great memories were shared with family and friends on boating holidays to Desolation Sound, annual family vacations to Osoyoos, winters in Palm Springs and of course skiing in Lake Tahoe. Jim was elected by his peers as president of the Canadian Horticulture Council in Ottawa. Jim had Ministerial Appointments to Provincial and Federal to represent the Boards, including NAFTA, Canadian Agriculture industry. He was repeatedly elected Chairman of BC Vegetable Marketing Commission for 13 years and a director of multiple BC Vegetable Committees. The Harris family would like to thank Dr. Oger, Dr. Mezei, Dr. Chakrabarti, Dr. Jovanovic and Dr. Turner and staff for their continued care over the years. Jim would like to thank the wise politicians that fought for MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying). He found it so peaceful to learn that he had complete control of his life. Jim also wanted to extend a special thanks to the staff of Fraser Health MAiD for their compassion and care. At Jim’s request, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, Jim has requested donations to the Vancouver office of the Myasthenia Gravis Association of BC (MG) through the website www.canadahelps.org/en
