Journey Canoe “dream” now a reality
District Indigenous Education Department developing a Paddling Together mentorship program CATHRYN TUCKER
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Acquiring a Journey Canoe to help bring Indigenous culture and history to all learners in the Delta School District has long been a dream of members of Delta’s Indigenous Education Department. Just a few weeks ago that dream turned into reality. On May 26 Indigenous Cultural Mentor Nathan Wilson and Indigenous Education Curriculum Coordinator Cody Forbes took delivery of a 39-foot fibreglass Journey Canoe. For Wilson, the moment was particularly poignant. “Twenty-one years ago, I took part in the the Pulling Together Canoe Society Program which aims to enhance and improve relationships between Indigenous youth and public service agencies such as the RCMP,” recalled Wilson. “By putting everyone together in canoes for a long period of time, they have the opportunity to talk, get to know each other, have fun and build relationships while learning more about our country’s Indigenous culture and history. The program breaks down barriers by enabling people who might not usually be comfortable interacting with each other to sit side-by-side and work together to achieve a goal. “The canoe is such a great analogy for life – we all need to pull our own weight and we won’t get anywhere if we don’t pull together. The program reconnected me to my culture, and ignited my passion for sharing my culture, his-

I believe it was instrumental in leading me to my current role of Indigenous Cultural Mentor in the Delta School District. I am so excited that we have our own Journey Canoe and can’t wait to see the positive impact it will have on all learners in Delta.” The Indigenous Education depart-
ment is developing a mentorship program, Paddling Together, for students in grades 5 to 12. The program will inspire positive identity of urban Indigenous students, help develop leaders, and bridge relationships throughout the community. “We will ensure that the cultural significance of the canoe is understood
by all who paddle together in it,” added Diane Jubinville, district vice-principal Indigenous Education. “The Paddling Together program will support the Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action number 63 by building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect.” Delta students and staff will have access to the canoe, which has room for 18 passengers, by way of day trips throughout the paddling season. The Paddling Together program will culminate with a Pulling Together Canoe Journey each summer. “We owe huge thanks to Fortis BC, the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen and the Indigenous Sport Physical Activity and Recreation Council (ISPARC) for their generous grants and also to school district staff and community that took part in last fall’s Orange Shirt Day fundraiser,” said Forbes. “It’s thanks to this wonderful community effort that we were able to realize our dream of getting a canoe. Currently, we are working with Delta students and artists from Tsawwassen and Musqueam First Nations to develop a name and artwork for the canoe.” All funders of the canoe will be invited to the celebratory launch of the canoe in September, closer to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. For the ceremony, the canoe will be brushed off with cedar and “woken up” with Indigenous traditions, before being set into the water for its inaugural journey from Wellington Point Park in Ladner to Deas Island Regional Park.

Ocean Ambassadors Canada’s PickUp3 Program in Delta was officially launched last Saturday at Fred Gingell Park in Tsawwassen.
PickUp3 program launches in Delta
Ocean Ambassadors Canada is excited to announce the launch of its PickUp3 program in Delta. Sponsored jointly by the City of Delta, Global Container Terminals (GCT) Canada, and the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, PickUp3 is an easy and fun way for Deltan’s to help protect the local marine environment and keep beaches clean and safe. The program was introduced to the community at a launch event last Saturday (June 18) at Fred Gingell Park in Tsawwassen. “When we first heard about this idea, we knew we had to act – as operators where land meets tidewater, and in keeping with our global commitment to healthy and sustainable communities, PickUp3 was a perfect fit,” said GCT president Eric Waltz. “GCT Canada is proud to part-

steps: community members visit a local beach, they pick up at least three pieces of trash and participants dispose of their trash, and use the QR code found on City of Delta garbage cans to log the trash they threw away. The trash is then aggre-
gated in an online “trash metre” which shows how much garbage has been picked up from local beaches. “Congratulations to Ocean Ambassadors Canada for launching the PickUp3 campaign. We are honoured to be the first official community partner to help make Delta a cleaner and more environmentally conscious community,” said Mayor George Harvie. “Our goal is to remove 30,000 pieces of garbage from our beaches. If we each do just a little bit, our collective efforts will make a big difference, not just in our community, but for the health of our oceans. I’m looking forward to getting involved to protect and preserve the beauty of Delta — and I hope you will join me too.” -submitted by Ocean Ambassadors Canada

Condo proposal goes to public hearing SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta council has granted preliminary approval for a development application by Shato Holdings for a residential complex fronting the new Delta casino/ hotel complex. The application will now go to a public hearing this Tuesday, June 28. Located near the interchange of Highways 99 and 17A, the 153-unit development would have 138 condos and 15 townhouses. The application also includes a proposed subdivision that would subdivide off a portion of the Gateway Casinos site and combine it with the property. The proposed development would have a one-storey above-ground parking structure that supports a central common open space surrounded by two condo buildings with five levels
of residential units, a row of 15 two-storey townhomes and a one-storey amenity building. Also proposed is an affordable home ownership program whereby the owner would loan five percent of the market value of a unit for 10 per cent of the saleable condos in each phase. It would apply to 15 condos total. A report to council notes that, from a broad planning perspective, the project could be viewed as one that will contribute to urban sprawl, bringing a multi-unit residential use to lands outside of a core urban area. “While there is some precedent for residential uses on the north side of Highway 99, outside of the riverfront properties, residential uses are limited to dwellings on agricultural lots. The Official Community Plan encourages housing density to be located near
transportation, jobs and amenities to promote ‘complete communities’, being those which lessen personal reliance on the private automobile,” the report notes. “While the development site is located near major transportation corridors (i.e., highways 17 A and 99), the current transit service serving the site is limited and there are few amenities within walking distance of the project. The owner has recognized the locational concerns regarding the proposed development and has incorporated certain amenities into the development design in attempt to partly reduce automobile reliance.” While the location is not consistent with several OCP policies, the project would be consistent with the OCP’s goal of providing housing that meets the needs of residents of different income levels, the report also notes.
Stephen Bennett, CEO of Affordable Housing Societies, says affordable housing is exactly what the community of Delta needs. Delta is no different from other municipalities; the city needs a significant increase of affordable housing, and it needs it fast. The Ladner Willows redevelopment aligns with all four pillars of the Delta Housing Strategy and will move from 40 aging townhomes to a new development that creates homes for 150 individuals and families in the community. “We need timely approvals so that projects can get built and families, seniors and lower income individuals can have safe and stable housing,” says Bennett. In Delta alone, rents have increased by more than 30% since 2008, and vacancy rates are between 1-2%. The needs have never been greater for affordable housing. Organizations like Red Door Housing Society have done an incredible job of providing a positive influence in the community and of providing affordable housing for those that need it. “Delaying this redevelopment will not only result in increased development costs but may also impact Delta’s opportunity to be presented future affordable housing developments like this one.” says Bennett. “There’s a real urgency for this project to be approved and to move quickly through the development process.”

New off-leash enclosure proposed for Paterson Park A new enclosed offleash dog area could be coming to Ladner’s Paterson Park. A staff report to the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission proposes conceptual plans for enclosures at the existing off-leash areas within Paterson Park as well as Pebble Hill Park in Tsawwassen. The Paterson Park project would cost an estimated $150,000. A report to the commission notes that with an open infield space, the Paterson Park setting allows dog owners to easily see their dogs, even if they are a significant distance away. However, residents have expressed concern about their dogs’ safety, especially with the proximity of Ladner Trunk Road. To support the community’s continued use of the oval for recreational purposes, a large enclosure was proposed adjacent to the existing parking lot. Still requiring council’s approval, the proposed enclosure does not alter the existing boundaries of the designated dog offleash area in the park. The report also notes a survey during public consultation, which took place this spring, found a majority of respondents were generally supportive or satisfied with the size of the enclosure being 4,400-square-metres, as well as having a doublegate system. When asked about additional features, survey respondents focused on a drinking fountain or water source for dogs and some form of shade for people as highest priorities for additional features, should funding allow. Any extension of the proposed enclosure to the east would require engagement with Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), which owns the eastern portion of the park. -Sandor Gyarmati

City using herbicides to deal with invasive plants SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta is resorting to using traditional herbicides to deal with invasive plants infesting several athletic parks in the community. A recent staff report to council notes that parks operations and the Climate Action and Environment department reviewed invasive plant species infestations at John Oliver Park, North Delta Community Park, Dugald Morrison Park and Hawthorne Park to assess and determine the options for management of the turfgrass athletic fields. While Delta’s Pesticide Use Control Bylaw does not allow for the continued use of traditional herbicide treatments for maintenance purposes, it does provide an exemption for treatment if the invasive species population reaches a level where there is a significant loss to the use of the property and/or impacts safety and playability. According to the report, the infestation of invasive plant species in the form of dandelion, broad and narrow leaf plantain, clover and knotweed are well above the acceptable thresholds and are compromising the usability of the athletic fields.
SANDOR GYARMATI PHOTO
The playing fields at Dugald Morrison Park in Ladner have been impacted as city crews deal with invasive plants. “Staff investigated various ways to address the invasive plant issues based on Integrated Pest Management best practices. Staff also researched existing practices in neighbouring municipalities and found that selective herbicides were used on high priority sports fields in other cities to treat invasive weeds and maintain quality turfgrass stands where there are severe infestations,” said the report.
The application of selective herbicides at the parks is scheduled to take place on weekday mornings by a licensed applicator who will follow all safety regulations set out by the province and the Ministry of Environment. Staff will monitor conditions to eliminate the possibility of drift and treated fields would be closed for use for several hours following application.

Trustee Bruce Reid seeking re-election SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta Board of Education trustee Bruce Reid announced this week he will be seeking re-election in this year’s municipal election. A news release notes he brings a wealth of educational experience to the role of trustee, first elected under the Kids Matter banner. This time around, he will be running with fellow school board incumbent Nick Kanakos, who last week announced he is also seeking reelection. “Serving the district as a trustee for the past eight years has been a privilege and also an opportunity to have a positive impact on education in Delta,” Reid said. “I will be joining Nick Kanakos, who is also running for re-election, and together we will continue to provide the highest standard of education for our parents and our
Bruce Reid students in the province.” A former pastor and Salvation Army officer and administrator, Reid was also a secondary school counsellor and teacher in Richmond and Fort Nelson. “My experience as a teacher and a counsellor has helped me understand the educational system from many perspectives and I have used this experience to guide the school district over the past eight years,” said Reid. “I choose to run as a trustee to help improve educational funding and the quality of education in the district. While we have seen funding improve in this province, we still have a way to go
to see our funding equal to that of other provinces.” Kanakos said Reid brings a wealth of knowledge to our school board meetings. “He has a deep understanding of the education system, which is invaluable when making decisions regarding the futures of our children,” said Kanakos. “Together we have over 60 years of teaching experience in the classroom and we would be honored to continue to serve the students and parents of Delta.” Having run as a New Democrat candidate for Delta South in the previous two provincial elections, Reid has been a resident of Delta for the past 13 years. He has seven grandchildren, three of which are students in the Delta School District. He also has a son teaching in Campbell River. The municipal election is Oct. 15.

Cullen Commission on B.C. money laundering is only the starting point of a long road KIRK LAPOINTE
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
The release last week of the 1,804-page Cullen Commission report on money laundering in British Columbia landed like a block of cement. It is, however, really just a piece of the structural foundation. It challenges the provincial government’s courage to bear the cost of truly rebuilding a system that would ultimately feed its coffers far less. What is clear in an early reading is how public coffers have developed a dependence on casino revenue, real estate transfers and consumer spending most everyone knew was unsavoury – even the commission can’t surmise how much laundering takes place, only that it’s a large sum in the billions each year here. Austin Cullen’s exploration is the starting point in a necessary marathon to tackle the prodigious currency that illicitly courses through our drug deals, white-collar crime and overseas flights of capital into our drug deals, real estate, yachts, jets, luxury cars and, for many British Columbians, their living large in la vida loca. Like any good study, it looks at systems more than the actors within them. (Mind you, it does suggest previous BC Liberal governments were aware of the problems and ineffective in dealing with them, but not corrupted). Name a system around this field and Cullen found fault: among them the police, the regulators, the realtors, money services, corporate registries, international trade services, accountancy, cryptocurrency,
and of course politics. The legal profession, however, is doing well in his books in contending with the challenges money laundering brings its way. Its 101 recommendations are daunting and, at first blush, beyond any province’s capacity without national and even international concurrence. Simply in the B.C. context, Cullen is calling for a new level of attention that would revolutionize scrutiny on the economy. It would involve a powerful independent commissioner to oversee the province’s response to money laundering, a special intelligence and investigation unit dedicated to this field, a reporting of all luxury goods transactions of more than $10,000 to a central authority, much clearer attention to wealth transfers often at the core of laundering, a deeper resolve to seize assets, and new anti-laundering credentials for realtors and chartered accountants. This is not work to be done by week’s end, even decade’s end. In some ways, Cullen is saying it’s time for the province to chart its own course. “The RCMP’s lack of attention to money laundering has allowed for the unchecked growth of money laundering since at least 2012,” the report concludes, and its criticism of the federal financial tracking system known as FINTRAC suggests B.C. at least needs to get into its own hunt on money services. The most tangible finding is also one of its most controversial. The former B.C. Supreme Court justice concluded that money laundering was not a significant impact on housing unaffordability. This will gall many, but in reviewing this section

of the massive document, the commission effort to confirm speculation was never fortified by sufficient evidence. There are other things like much more to blame, he concluded – like supply and demand, population growth and interest rates. It is difficult to know if the release was Attorney General’s David Eby’s vision in 2017 and 2018 when it became obvious something needed to be done. He probably thought “something” wasn’t “this thing.” His first effort to study money laundering under former RCMP deputy commissioner Peter German – praised Wednesday by Cullen for changes in casino practices that no longer make them laundering havens – only sent him deeper into the weeds to initiate a full-fledged commission under Cullen. The idea at the time seemed to be to produce a rapid report in time for early 2020 to then produce legislation by that fall’s scheduled election that would position Eby as the white knight to cleanse British Columbia. A few things, like elongated research ahead of the hearings, like elongated hearings ahead of the report, like that pesky pandemic, were uncooperative. But what few could have surmised then was that the probe would be both so lengthy in one sense and so surfacescratching in the other. The study demands other studies, the commission more commissions, the prescription more prescriptions. This report is merely an on-ramp to an eight-lane highway. But I’m not feeling too well, so I’m sent to my room. Finally the results from the other test – positive. That’s it, I’m grounded. Stay in your room, you can’t go out and play. So, for the last few days I’ve been doing my best to keep my family safe and myself occupied. Binge watching Netflix, catching up on my sleep. Father’s Day was relaxing – I didn’t have to fight over the remote, the Canadian Grand Prix and US Open on the schedule, and I was waited on all day. Still, it would be nice to go outside, instead of watching everyone have fun from my window. It looks like the curse of the lottery ticket bit hard this time. Well, never again. Wait, it looks like I won $10! When’s the next draw? What could possibly go wrong?

Food insecurity is Canada’s quiet epidemic Editor: Before the pandemic, one out of six Canadian households with children and one-quarter of households who rented their homes, reported food insecurity within the previous 30 days. Twothirds of the Canadians reporting food insecurity were employees. With the winding down of emergency support programs, high living costs, and sticker shock prices of food, rates of hunger and malnutrition are rising. According to Kirstin Beardsley, CEO of Food Banks Canada, “This summer will be the toughest Canada’s food banks will have ever experienced in our 41-year history.” A growing percent-
age of our co-workers, neighbours, and friends, will ask themselves each month, do I pay the rent or put food on the table. What is the size of the problem? A ballpark estimate suggests up to 1,000 hungry children in North Delta alone. Poor diets have its greatest impact on children. The medical profession is well aware of its consequences. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that doctors screen families for food insecurity during their visits. Many published studies explore the effects of poor diets on children in Canada. Children who lack healthy, balanced diets may experience lower self-confidence, depression, anxiety, and
asthma. In the classroom, hungry children may have less self-control, feel tired or be restless during class, act aggressively, and not play well with other children. They are more likely to miss classes, arrive late, and be referred to school psychologists. What can you do? Become involved. Join the Parents Advisory Council of your child’s school and organize a hot lunch program. Become involved a community foodbank as a volunteer, a donor, or a board member. Organize a food drive in your neighborhood. Sponsor a child through your local Rotary Club’s Starfish Pack program (www.starfishpack.com). John Shepherd
Don’t short change the value of school trustee candidates
Editor: I am responding to Brad Sherwin’s “Community Comment: Time to think about running this October” from the Delta Optimist’s May 13th edition. A couple lines struck me in particular: “School board is almost a last-minute decision. I think I dropped off my paperwork the day before the deadline, if not on deadline day.” I was troubled when I read this, mostly by the idea that running for school trustee requires
little prep or thought. I think we need better commitment than that. Certainly, Brad is being cheeky, I thought to myself. And yes, Brad does go on to add that “…you should make sure you’re running for the right reasons.” Agreed! If you know someone who cares about public education and wants better for our community, encourage them to run for office. Municipal elections are Oct. 15 and the Delta Teachers’ Association’s Political Action Committee will
be doing work to engage with school trustee candidates. What do Delta’s educators, students and community need? At the very least, better funding for B.C.’s education system—currently among the lowest per student funding in Canada! And we need trustees who are prepared to fight for quality public education. Our students, educators and community deserve nothing less. Susan Yao President/Delta Teachers’ Association

Special $20 summer recreation pass returns SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta’s Summer Pass is back. Council recently gave the thumbs-up to a recommendation by the parks and recreation department to re-introduce the $20 Summer Pass for facilities, which was not offered during the past two years due to the pandemic. It was originally introduced in 2014 to encourage children and youth to utilize City of Delta recreation centres, providing unlimited access to dropin activities at each of the city’s recreation centres from the end of June through the September long weekend. The introduction of the Pass was a considerable success, producing $68,000 in revenue in the
first year of implementation and generating nearly 40,000 additional visits to recreation centres from children and youth, according to a staff report. Sales grew from 3,300 in 2014 to a high of 4,400 sales in 2018. Since the introduction of the Summer Pass, the city made a number of changes to its fee structure. That includes the introduction of the Delta Families First Initiative, which included a new Delta Youth Admission Pass providing Delta youth ages 10-to-18 free unlimited access yearround to drop-in activities. The Pass will be available to all children and youth, including nonresidents, who wish to purchase it at the rate of
$20 for the 2022 season. “This will also ensure children and youth visiting their relatives and friends who are Delta residents are able to enjoy the City’s recreation facilities for a limited period,” the report notes. The city will review the Summer Pass next year. Meanwhile, the parks and recreation department is rolling out new software for its online registration system. It’s been a big undertaking and, according to the city, programs for the Fall 2022 season will be in the new system. Customers can now begin creating accounts online. All customers must create a new account in the system as their old ones won’t be transferred from the old system being phased out.
We could tell you all about our single contiguous berth now, but it will sound less weird in person.

City of Delta keeping fingers crossed in flood watch Staff are closely monitoring the peak freshet flows in the Fraser basin SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta is keeping a close eye on the ongoing flood risk. Engineering Director Steven Lan on June 13 provided council with an update on the spring freshet and how things are currently shaping
up, noting it’s been a colder spring, which has delayed the snow melt. Usually, the peak freshet flows in the Fraser basin are seen in early June, but that won’t be the case this year. Lan noted that, as of June 1, the province advised that only 19 per cent of the snow pack
has melted and runoff, but in a normal year that would be around 50 per cent. He said Delta staff are following the conditions as well as Delta’s flood plan, which has the city currently at the first stage. “We have completed our annual dike inspec-

Delta Hospital looking for volunteers for patient-centred care program DANI PENALOZA

If you’re interested in promoting and supporting equal, communicative partnerships between health care providers and their patients and families, volunteering with Delta Hospital’s “Patient Partner Program” could be the perfect fit. Currently supported by five volunteers, the program is centred on improving the patient and family experience in hospital and community health settings. Delta Hospital is encouraging folks who are passionate about patient-centred care and the community to reach out and get involved in their Patient Partner Program. “The patient experience matters, and [healthcare leadership] need that kind of feedback in order to develop programs and care that is actually patient-focused. Patient needs come first, and that’s what we’re there for, to remind them and share experiences,” says Linda Perkins, a Patient Partner who volunteers at both Delta and Peace Arch hospitals. Like Perkins, Patient Partners can volunteer at Delta Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital or both. In the beginning, volunteers will be trained and mentored to ease them into the role. Volunteers can choose their own schedule, but the program does require that they commit for a year. In addition to working among fellow team members, the role involves working directly with patients, their families and healthcare professionals. The work varies depending on need, but everything is centred around providing a patient perspective and a voice on how healthcare is planned, delivered and practiced.

Patient Partner Program volunteers Linda Perkins and Tom Holland outside Delta Hospital.
For example, Perkins and fellow Patient Partner Tom Holland worked to improve wayfinding in hospitals by looking critically at the signage in and around the building. “Some of the signs said things like ‘medical imaging.’ Well, nobody shows up at the hospital for a ‘medical image’ – they show up for an ultrasound or a CT. So, that input essentially informs how the hospital [directs] and moves a patient through the organization, from parking to reception to the department,” says Holland. Pre-pandemic, the program was supported by 12 volunteers, but COVID significantly reduced their team to three. They’ve just recently recruited two new volunteers to bring them up to a total of five. Teen-led ‘Girl Up Delta’ club fundraises $2,200 to support international education equality DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Whether it’s making an impact within Delta or on the other side of the world, Girl Up Delta has been getting down to business over these past six months since they formed. As a chapter of the United Nations’ Girl Up campaign – which aims to promote gender equality and social change – the group of Delta teens have carried out three
initiatives so far. Their most recent ones, both of which they did in May, were fundraising $2,200 for Room to Read, a global nonprofit tackling illiteracy and gender inequality, and putting together nearly 30 care packages for a women’s transition house in Delta. Co-presidents Yazmine Grewal and Ranvir Otal, who are Grade 11 students at Southpointe Academy, agree it has been an empowering and

rewarding journey. “It feels so good [to be giving back to the Delta community], and personally, it feels so good to see the smiles on the faces of people who we’re helping,” says Otal. For their Room to Read fundraiser, both were pleasantly surprised at how much money they were able to bring in to support the non-profit. According to Room to Read’s website, $300 can help a girl stay in school for one year, meaning that Girl Up Delta was able to help seven girls across the world in Asia and Africa where the organization focuses their efforts. “Last year, we weren’t able to do any of this. We didn’t even know [Girl Up] existed, and then this year, we’re able to build something just over the span of six months and have other youth involved, other girls involved,” says Grewal. With the help of a Rising Youth grant and a Small Neighbourhood grant, Girl Up Delta also collaborated with a local women’s transition house to create care
packages intended to improve mental health and well-being. “We talked to the transition house before donating them, and they said it would be a great idea to give something that they can pass time with and just enjoy,” says Grewal. They included motivational cards, word searches, puzzles, pencil crayons and other activity-based things in their care packages, which is uniquely different from traditional hygiene-product-based care packages. And as previously reported by the Optimist, Girl Up Delta ran a period poverty drive in support of United Way’s Period Promise campaign back in February. “A big thank you to the Delta community and our school [for the support],” says Otal. With their group having now expanded to nearly a dozen, both copresidents are hopeful that other local teens will be inspired to join them in their work to achieve gender equity worldwide. Why Be Proactive With Your Waterline Replacement? Poly-B (polybutylene) is a fl fle exible plastic plumbing piping that was commonly used in homes built between 1978 and 1995. If your home was built during this time frame, your main water line is most likely Poly-B. Prior to 1978, copper was typically used. Poly-B was popular for builders as it was much cheaper than copper piping. Poly-B piping was discontinued several years ago because over time the pipes began to burst and leak. As homes begin to age, more problems arise with this type of piping, causing devastating effects for the homeowner.
ZERO DOWN TIME Y t line li replacement l t will ill be b done d Your water on YOUR schedule. Most jobs only require 8 hours without water. If you wait for your water line to break before repairing, you could be DAYS without water.
NO DAMAGE When the flow off Wh a water t line li breaks, b k th fl water will typically undermine the base material under your home, driveway or other hard surfaces. When this happens, the ground could take years to settle and compact again. During settling and compaction, concrete surfaces and drywall could crack. By being proactive, you are saving your home from damage!
NO INSURANCE CLAIM Most M t iinsurance companies i will ill require i YOU to pay for repairing a broken water line BEFORE the damages caused by it can be repaired. You may also be required to leave your home until repairs are completed.

Easy ways to eat more vegetables Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive or time-consuming. It’s a habit you get used to, and every day it gets easier. The important thing is to get started now. One of the easiest places to start is adding lots of vegetables and fruit. Fruits and veggies contribute lots of fibre, little fat and little sugar. They also help you feel fuller and reduce the urge to snack. Here are some easy ways to eat more vegetables: * Follow Canada’s Food Guide on healthy eating * Re-think your plate. Fill half your plate with vegetables, a quarter with grain products and a quarter with meat or alternatives * Prepare extra raw veggies when you have a few extra minutes: carrots, rutabagas, celery, turnips, broccoli and others can be prepared a few days ahead making it easier to grab and go * Add a side salad at lunch. Pack cut vegetable sticks with a
low-fat dip * Buy packages of pre-cut carrots, peppers, leafy greens or mixed fruit to make life a little easier if you’re rushing to make lunches each morning * Prepare extra cooked veggies at a time to have easy additions into future meals. Here are a few examples: Cook extra potatoes (yes, they are veggies too!) at dinner You can add cooled, sliced potatoes to a green salad or an omelette Roast 2 pounds of beets at a time (golden are a favourite), They are great diced cold and added to a salad or quickly reheated for dinner the next night. Try roasting cabbage (red or green). A great addition to any meal and wonderful when reheated too * Visit a farmers’ market and buy fresh-picked vegetables and fruit. Some local markets are open year round * Eat regular meals. Skipping a meal – especially breakfast – can lead to overeating throughout the day. And when you’re very hungry, it’s hard to make healthy choices
* Cut back on portion size. (North American portions have grown steadily over the last few decades.) * Use smaller dishes. Believe it or not, using a smaller plate gives your brain the impression that you’re eating your “normal” amount of food * Buy food for what it has, not what the package shouts to you from the shelf. Most vegetables are naturally fat-free and high in fibre * Low-fat and fat-free doesn’t always mean low in calories. Read nutrition labels * Try to plan your meals for the whole week. Last-minute choices are often unhealthy ones. Prepare a shopping list that includes a variety of fresh, frozen and canned vegetables and fruit * When fresh vegetables and fruit are not in season, choose frozen, canned or dried. Most frozen and canned foods are processed within hours of harvest, so their flavour and nutrients are preserved. Select frozen and canned vegetables and fruit that are

Have vegetables and fruit more often than store bought juice. Juice doesn’t give you as much fibre, and it won’t make you feel as full. Think colours when planning a meal. Nothing looks less appetizing than chicken breast, cau-
liflower and boiled potatoes on a white plate. Instead, roast some red-skinned potatoes and add stir-fried red and green bell peppers. Challenge yourself to try new vegetables each week and seek out new ways to prepare them! Who knew that rutabagas make delicious and nutritious oven fries! -Courtesy BC Fresh

Work continues on draft Cycling Master Plan SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s an ambitious plan which could result in a more complete cycling network throughout the City of Delta. Civic staff recently provided an update on the ongoing work to refine the draft Delta Cycling Master Plan to the Climate Action and Community Livability Advisory Committee, a plan that identifies current gaps, recommendations and cost estimates. A variety of new cycling facilities including shared bike lanes, marked bike lanes, protected bike lanes as well as multi-use pathways are being considered. An open house was recently held at Delta Municipal Hall on proposed cycling improvements on 44 Avenue from Arthur Drive to 57 Street. Currently in the design stage, the project includes marked buffered on-street cycle lanes, a defined parking lane along the north side of 44 Avenue as well as the removal of on-street parking along the south side of 44 Avenue to accom-
modate the cycling lanes. Residents have conveyed concerns about the potential loss of street parking, one of the biggest challenges in improving the overall cycling network. Construction is tentatively scheduled for this fall, which is to tie into the existing cycling lanes along Arthur Drive, south of 44 Avenue, and would result in a continuous cycling facility on 44 Avenue from Ladner Elementary to Dugald Morrison Park. Delta’s draft cycling plan contains several budget options including keeping the status quo as far as gradual bike lane increases, which would cost $100,000 per year. There’s also an “enhanced status quo” option that would see the city spend $250,000 annually, getting an additional 2,000 metres of painted bike lanes, while an “aspirational” option would see the city spend $1 million annually. Public engagement is ongoing as well as with key stakeholders including HUB Cycling, various city advisory committees as well as the Mayor’s
More watermain work coming for Ladner Village More daytime traffic detours are on the way in Ladner Village as a major sanitary sewer and watermain replacement project continues. The city intends to upgrade approximately hundreds of metres of existing sanitary trunk sewer along Elliott Street from Bridge Street to a new pump station on 51 Street. The project will also involve upgrading an existing watermain along Elliott Street between Chisholm Street and 48 Avenue. According to the city, the existing sanitary trunk main and watermain along the corridor
have been in service for approximately 60 years and is in need of an upgrade to accommodate planned higher density in the village. The city’s engineering department notes the new pump station, which will be located next to the Ladner Community Centre, is scheduled to be operational by August. The sanitary sewer upgrades along Elliot Street are scheduled to begin by mid-November. The existing watermain section between River Road and Trenant Street was replaced in 1990 and does not require an upgrade. -Sandor Gyarmati

Minister’s Minute: Dry bones When have you felt like dry bones? The valley of the dry bones in Ezekiel 37 resonates. This passage is often used as one of the readings during the Easter Vigil and then again on the Day of Pentecost when following the Revised Common Lectionary. The prophet is taken by the Lord to the middle of a valley. The valley is full of dry bones. What follows is a dialogue between the prophet and the Lord. The Lord asks if these bones live? To which the prophet replies, “O Lord God, you know” (verse 3). As the narrative continues slowly but surely the dry bones are brought back to life with flesh and breath once more. The truth of the matter is, we have all experienced ourselves feeling like the dry bones in the valley. There we lie in the

heat, parched and without form. Perhaps such a time as this are the days or week leading up to vacation, or when we find ourselves without a job or “stuck” in employment that is unfulfilling, without inspiration. At other times, when we do not feel like dry bones, we may find we relate to the Prophet. The one called to come and respond to what seems like an impossible and
overwhelming situation. This is the time where the odds seem to be stacked against us, a new promotion at work or moving to a new town to start over can be such moments. Perhaps you know of one or two more. In both circumstances, we do well to remember the context we commonly hear this particular passage, the Easter Vigil, and The Day of Pentecost. This is significant because both occasions remind us of Resurrection and the new life of Easter and the flames, energy, and passion of Pentecost. The end result of this passage is that the Prophet admirably completes the task; and the bones live and have breath. In both circumstances the hand of God is there to guide and hold up the People of God when we feel like dry bones or a Prophet with an impossible task.

Sidekick hosting auditions
Auditions begin next week for the Sidekick Players’ 26th season. Opening the season in the fall is Outlaw by Norm Foster and directed by Carroll Lefebvre. A young Canadian homesteader travelling far from home, finds himself accused of murder in the state of Kansas in 1871. With only his wits to defend himself, he turns the law of the land- and the men hell-bent on enforcing it – upside down. This authentic western is a unique take on the days when guns were the law. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, June 27 and Wednesday, June 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172 56th Street. Characters required are: Bob (The Outlaw). Male in 30’s. He is a kind, polite (Canadian) homesteader trying to work to support his family back in Canada. Dupuis (The Wrangler) Male in their 40’s to 50’s. He’s a rough, tough, weather worn bad boy from Kansas. The roles of the sheriff and the cattle baron have been cast. All roles are volunteer only. You must be vaccinated against COVID-19. Auditions will be a cold read from the script. There are no appointments for auditions but will be a first come, first served basis. All performances and rehearsals are at The Tsawwassen Arts Centre with rehearsals commencing in late August, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Long-time band teachers retire
Margaret Behenna and Curt Jantzen are hanging up their batons! After 50 years each of teaching young students of all ages the conductors have led their last performance for the Band-Ex program. “It’s time to pack in the elementary-band gig. We would love to have stayed one more year, to finish it off in style. It’s COVID-19 that has created the decision - we were done in by COVID.” At first the schools were closed in March of 2020, then when they finally opened there were no outside instructors or groups allowed, says Jantzen. As other activities began to resume, the two teachers discussed returning in 2022, but realized they would have to teach band wearing a mask. “Wearing a mask would be extremely awkward as one would have to remove it frequently to demonstrate clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, or flute,” added Behenna. “The closeness required to teach a student about correct placement of mouthpiece on lips makes such activity very awkward during COVID times, especially while wearing a mask.” The Band-Ex program was held at Hawthorne Elementary, with students streaming by carpool to the after-school program from all schools in Ladner and further afield. Band-Ex regularly enrolled 50 beginners plus 50 second-year players. The twice-year concerts were memorable and exciting,

Parents often heaped praise on the two teachers for teaching the joy of music, while instilling discipline and work ethics. Behenna and Jantzen would like to express a huge thankyou to students, parents, and families who supported them so enthusiastically over the many years. “It has been a joyful experience,” he said. “Our goal was to instill an appreciation of instru-
mental music in our students, but in return we received from them a welcome vigour in our post-retirement years.” Their final elementary school concert took place in February of 2020. Behenna was the much-loved band teacher at DSS for many years and because of that the two teachers taught many children of her former students. Jantzen is also well-known in the community, having lived in Ladner over the years while a band teacher, then Fine Arts Coordinator, for the School
District of Surrey. Both conductors continue with the Delta Music Makers Concert Band, which is their adult group based at DSS on Tuesday evenings. They will lead the Delta Music Makers group of 44 to perform in England and France this August. Exciting concerts in the UK will take place in the Chester, Cornwall, and London areas, followed by crossing the channel to perform at some of Canada’s First and Second World War Memorials, including Juno Beach.

If you’re looking for some cute, fashionable tote bags to rock this summer, Delta Secondary School’s Entrepreneurship 12 students have just the fix for you. Students from the class are selling their custom-designed tote bags to support charities of their choosing, and the last day to buy and pick one up will be on Monday, June 27. This year, some of the charities they’ve collaborated with include the South Delta Food Bank, the David Suzuki Foundation, the Ocean Wise Conservation Association and the Delta Community Animal Shelter.

Delta Secondary’s Entrepreneurship 12 students are selling around 20 different tote bags to support charities of their choosing. Pictured from left to right are students Carson Cooksley, Owen Frank, Cameron Zahn and Daya Bains.
“I think particularly for a topic like entrepreneurship, you can’t just learn that from a book. It has to be hands-on. I mean, if we could just have lemonade stands all year, that would be great, but there’s no better way to learn entrepreneurship than actually engaging in it,” says DSS Business Education teacher Jayson McNaughton. Last year when they ran this project, McNaughton says they raised around $400 for the charities, but since starting the project at the beginning of June this year, they’ve already exceeded that amount. At first, Christina Myers was certain there was a mistake when she saw her book on the longlist for the annual Leacock Medal award, especially because it was snuggled up beside Rick Mercer’s in the announcement’s photo. It was at 7 a.m. on June 1 when she opened the email announcing which 10 authors had made it onto the list – never expecting to see her own name there for her first-ever fiction book, The List of Last Chances. “I’m still just baffled. The first few days I was thinking, like, somebody’s going to call you up and say, ‘Oh gosh, there’s been a mix-up. This is really embarrassing. We’re really sorry.’ And I just kept bracing for that to happen because there’s some pretty heavy hitters on that list,” said the former Tsawwassen resident. The List of Last Chances, which was published last year,

Christina Myers’ book The List of Last Chances has made it on the longlist for the Leacock Medal award. is a witty, hilarious read that tells the story of main character Ruthie’s “last-ditch effort to pull herself up from rock bottom,” reads publisher Caitlin Press’ website. The story revolves around a generation-bridging, unlikely friendship and a sight-seeing,
sexual-bucket-list ticking road trip across Canada. In addition to being longlisted for the Leacock Medal, Myers’ book has also been shortlisted for the 2022 Fred Kerner Book Award. The List of Last Chances also been a huge hit with book
clubs over the past year. “I’ve done virtual Zoom visits with a bunch of book clubs, and others have reached out to tell me that their club is doing the book and ask if I have any questions specifically for book clubs ... This has been one of the most rewarding things to participate in – hearing people’s first-hand enthusiasm, or their questions or sometimes things that they didn’t like about the book, too, which is helpful to know as a writer,” says Myers. She now has a list of potential book-club questions available on her website because of all the enthusiasm. Seeing how much others enjoy her book, in addition to the awards’ recognition, has been incredibly rewarding and encouraging she adds. “I really feel like I’ve sort of been just spinning my wheels. It feels like there’s constantly other things that need attention other than my writing ... Maintaining the consistent freelance work that I do, and
maintaining a family life and keeping everybody sane and healthy in a pandemic has really made me feel like I haven’t accomplished very much,” she says. “So, in a weird way, these awards are a nice boost to kind of remind myself, like, ‘No, you’ve accomplished something and you can accomplish more. It’s just taking you a little bit longer and that’s just the stage that you’re in.’” In memory of the humourist, author, economist and lecturer himself, the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour annually recognizes excellence in Canadian literary humour while encouraging the growth of Canadian humour writing. The shortlist will be announced on Aug. 15, and then the medal winner will be announced at the Leacock Medal Award gala dinner on Sept. 17. The List of Last Chances is available to purchase at both independent bookstores and major retailers, online and in store.

SDSS students win scholarships from national video clip contest DANI PENALOZA
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
South Delta Secondary students Mya Willis and Joshua Elliott have secured $4,000 scholarships at one of four participating Eastern Canada universities for their winning video clips executed in fluent French. This year, the Canadian Association of Immersion Professionals’ national Immersion Clip 2022 contest required contestants to create a 30 to 90-second video on how they are keeping French alive outside of their school. Both of the Grade 11 students won third place in the contest for their video clips and will have a choice of redeeming their scholarships at the University of Ottawa, Université Sainte-Anne, Université Saint-Paul or York University, Glendon Campus. “We are so proud of Mya and Joshua for winning – their videos were up against more than 400 other video clips from across Canada,” said Luce Turgeon, Head of Department and Immersion Teacher at South Delta Secondary. Submitted clips were evaluated for originality, quality of the spoken language, quality of French, the narration,

choice of image, soundtrack and the quality of the editing. “The videos highlight the vitality, creativity and commitment of young people in immersion programs across Canada,” said the Delta School District’s French Immersion programs coordinator Gwenaëlle Oger-Black. The clip contest aims to promote French Immersion and the learning of French in Canada, to encourage student creativity through information and communication technologies and to encourage learners to pursue their postsecondary studies in French.

Esther Lim has come a long way since arriving at South Delta Secondary from Pebble Hill Elementary and making the Grade 8 girls’ volleyball team. “I was the only under-hand server on our team. I was not very good,” Lim laughed in a recent interview with the Optimist. Fast forward to four years later and Lim has been recognized among the top high school age players in the country, as one of just 18 athletes named to Volleyball Canada’s National Excellence Program (NEP). She is one of only three players from B.C. selected following an extensive evaluation process. Based out of the Richmond Olympic Oval, NEP provides a full-time daily training environment to Grade 11 and 12 players from September through to December 2022. In addition to providing technical and tactical training in line with the Senior Women’s National Team, NEP will also provide competition opportunities with local and college programs, strength and conditioning, nutrition education, mental performance and well-being, as well as ongoing educational support. “The level of talent across Canada was quite high and these 18 athletes that have been selected are exceptional athletes. It is an exciting time for women’s volleyball in Canada and I can’t wait to get started working with the next generation of national team athletes,” said NEP Head Coach, Carolyn

South Delta Sun Devils will take aim at a provincial senior girls volleyball title next fall without standout Esther Lim who has earned a spot in Volleyball Canada’s National Excellence Program. O’Dwyer. “This is such an important program for our Women’s National Team in identifying and developing our top talent in Canada at a young age. We were fortunate to return to inperson talent identification for the first time since 2019, and the
ability to engage with athletes and coaches from across the country is a huge benefit of this program,” explains women’s National Team Head Coach Shannon Winzer. Even though the Olympic Oval is a short commute from Tsawwassen, NEP is a full-time

commitment and Lim won’t be returning to SDSS until next January to finish her Grade 12 year. It means the Sun Devils will be without their standout libero next fall as they take aim at a provincial AAAA title after dropping a five-set heartbreaker in the gold medal match last December. Lim admits missing out on that opportunity did weigh in her decision. “When I had to make the decision, it was very, very hard because I knew I had to give up the high school season,” Lim continued. “I know with the girls (coming) back next year it’s going to be an amazing team and I was really, really was looking forward to the season. But in the end, I feel this was a big opportunity that if I do pass on it, I would regret it.” Lim is coming off her club season with the Coquitlambased Ducks program and there will be Volleyball Canada activity in July, leading up to the NEP launch. She established herself as a libero (defensive specialist) after she hurt her ankle back in the summer of her Grade 9 year and it limited her jumping ability as an outside hitter. She hasn’t looked back since. “After my Grade 8 season, I didn’t even know club volleyball was a thing back then until my friends introduced me to it. The injury was a blessing in disguise because I’m too short to be an outside hitter at this level,” she chuckled. I got to see some of the (NEP) girls at (club) nationals (in Edmonton). They were so amazing that I thought ‘I’m I really going to be playing with these guys?’”

PEARSON, Jack Jeffrey May 7, 1935 - June 13, 2022 Jack was born in Manchester, UK to John and Norah Pearson. He immigrated to Canada in 1965, and was welcomed by his Uncle Jeff, Aunt Marjorie, and cousins Jean and Mike. Shortly after his arrival he met the love of his life, Ellen, and they were married in 1969. After proudly completing his National Service with the British Army, Jack spent his early professional life learning the trade of organ pipe making from his father. He later revisited this craft in his retirement from Air Canada (formerly Canadian Airlines), where he enjoyed his time “on the ramp” at the Vancouver International Airport. Jack also spent many years as a dedicated volunteer with the Richmond Food Bank, and enjoyed his time singing with the St. Alban’s Church choir. Jack was known for his many creative talents, from his time as a jazz drummer in Manchester with The Bagley Hall Youth Club Dance Band to his accomplished metal and woodwork. His children and grandchildren will continue to cherish the treasures that emerged from his workshop over the years. Jack is survived by his wife, Ellen; his children Stuart (Janet) and Janet (Sean); and grandchildren Lauren, Lindsay, Justin, Molly, and Lucy. Jack was well loved and will be dearly missed by his family and friends in Canada and in the UK. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 30th at 1pm at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner. We would like to thank the staff at Delta Hospital and the Irene Thomas Hospice for their respectful and compassionate care during Jack’s last weeks .

Jim consciously decided to take his journey to next level at the age of 83 with his family by his side. Jim will be deeply missed by sister Arlene (Kenny), brother Dave (Ruth), children; Valerie (Dave), Trevor (Lori), Jason (Pamela), grandchildren; Melissa (Reg), Ashley, Riley, Spencer, Lucas, and great grandchildren; Reece and Alina, nieces and nephews.
Jim was born in Ladner in 1938. His entire life was spent on Crescent Island as a 4th generation farmer. In his early years Jim was a well decorated motorcycle racer, racing competitively for Trev Deeley Harley-Davidson at Westwood Racetrack. He was always active, playing hockey, basketball, golf and tennis. Ever the adventurer, Jim earned his pilot licenses and flew the skies in his Beech Musketeer, then later in his Piper Comanche airplane. However, his true passion was skiing. Jim earned his Level 3 CSIA (Ski Instructor) certificate and showed his skills on the annual ski pilgrimage to Lake Tahoe. Great memories were shared with family and friends on boating holidays to Desolation Sound, annual family vacations to Osoyoos, winters in Palm Springs and of course skiing in Lake Tahoe.

Jim was elected by his peers as president of the Canadian Horticulture Council in Ottawa. Jim had Ministerial Appointments to Provincial and Federal Boards, including NAFTA, to represent the Canadian Agriculture industry. He was repeatedly elected Chairman of BC Vegetable Marketing Commission for 13 years and a director of multiple BC Vegetable Committees. The Harris family would like to thank Dr. Oger, Dr. Mezei, Dr. Chakrabarti, Dr. Jovanovic and Dr. Turner and staff for their continued care over the years. Jim would like to thank the wise politicians that fought for MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying). He found it so peaceful to learn that he had complete control of his life. Jim also wanted to extend a special thanks to the staff of Fraser Health MAiD for their compassion and care. At Jim’s request, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, Jim has requested donations to the Vancouver office of the Myasthenia Gravis Association of BC (MG) through the website www.canadahelps.org/en
