Be prepared to deal with the heat. That’s the message from the City of Delta as it issued a public notification this week that Stage One of its Heat Response Plan had been activated. That immediately followed Environment Canada’s heat warning issued Monday. Higher temperatures are forecast to last for the rest of this week. The city began to disseminate information to the public about how to stay safe and issued a list of the air-conditioned facilities that are open, in addition to staffing of Delta’s Beat the Heat telephone hotline at 604-946-3200. The city also noted staff would coordinate with community partners on available services and resources to support unsheltered and vulnerable individuals in Delta. Things are still at Stage One but an even higher increase in temperatures would result in Stage Two of the Delta plan. That would include three facilities (KinVillage Community Centre, McKee Seniors Rec. Centre and Kennedy Seniors Rec. Centre) being open for the public as 24/7 operations. Community Planning Director Marcy Sangret told the Optimist that under Delta’s plan, they would move to Stage 2 if the forecast or observed temperatures surpass heat warning criteria, and there is a high
certainty that temperatures will substantively increase day-over-day for three or more consecutive days. Heat Warnings and Extreme Heat Emergencies (Stages 1 and 2) are triggered by Environment and Climate Change Canada notification, according to the new B.C. two-tier heat alert and response system In June, the province announced the BC Heat Alert and Response System to establish temperature ranges and actions taken by government and communities under heat warnings and extreme heat emergency. For extreme heat emergencies, the province is prepared to issue alerts through the national public alerting system, Alert Ready. The province also notes that British Columbians are encouraged to plan and prepare for high temperatures, including supporting family or friends who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness and monitoring Environment and Climate Change Canada for updates about heat warnings and temperature forecasts. People are encouraged to monitor themselves for symptoms and should create a heat plan to keep safe. A heat plan should identify cool zones inside and outside of homes, ways to cool down and identify vulnerable family members and neighbours who are susceptible and who should be checked. See more information on Delta’s response plan at: www.delta.ca/beattheheat.

Delta businesses are largely accepting the new ban on single-use check out plastic bags, although there have been a handful of complaints about the change, says the city’s manager of climate action and environment. The bylaw went into effect June 6 and bans single-use plastic bags for carry-out purposes, with a few exceptions. Instead, customers who want or need a bag and who haven’t brought their own, will have to pay 25 cents for a paper bag or $2 for a reusable bag. The city sent out about 500 letters to local businesses and received about 30 responses or questions, including a handful of complaints, said Mike Brotherston. “There’s been a mix of questions and a few complaints,” he said. “Probably the most common question is why do businesses have to charge their customers for paper or reusable bags?” However, provincial law requires that there be a charge, Brotherston said. The charge is also incentive for people to bring their own bags and also allows cost recovery for the businesses. Jill McKnight, executive director for the Delta Chamber of Commerce, said she hasn’t heard many complaints, but one chamber member wanted to know if the PST had to be charged on the 25-cent paper bag fee. And after review, it was found PST is applicable.
She’s not sure if many businesses are aware of that and it could mean they’ll have to pay PST, and even possibly GST, on the paper bags, at tax time. That concern has been passed on to the city. “From a practical application, I think it would be valuable if the cost was 25 cents, including tax,” she said. Brotherston confirmed that PST is applicable but that it’s up to each business how it deals with it. Businesses can also increase the cost of the bags. The bylaw bans using Styrofoam cups, plates, dishes and containers for food take out, but restaurants are already shifting to plastic containers which are recyclable, or compostable cardboard, added Brotherston. The new bylaw still allows the use of plastic bags for meat, frozen foods, prepared foods and bulk items, prescription drugs, printed materials and linen and laundry. The transition has gone well, said Brotherston, who noted that council’s direction is to continue the transition period for another half year, with an emphasis on education and no enforcement. However, paper bags are more expensive and they require more storage space, said McKnight. “The bags are going to cost us more money than we’re taking in or that we were paying previously,” she added. It’s also more difficult to order paper bags in bulk in order to save that way. Many stores have posted notices about the new bylaw and ask customers if they
want a paper bag for a 25-cent charge. “We’ve seen an uptick in people remembering to bring in bags,” McKnight said. At Joe’s Farm Market in Tsawwassen, manager Ben Liu also notes that paper bags are more expensive than plastic. “It’s an adjustment,” but most customers have accepted the change, he added. It’s been a similar, smooth adaptation at Jarry’s Market in Ladner Harbour Centre. “I have no issues at all. Everybody has transitioned nicely,” said manager Blair Beaton. People knew about the coming ban a year ago, he said. And the store isn’t selling that many paper bags anyways. If there are spare cardboard boxes, customers can cart away their groceries in those. Many bring in their own re-usable bags. Clerks also tell customers there’s a 25-cent charge for a paper bag before they choose that option. “Even when the transition first happened, there was very little upset,” Beaton said. Delta council passed the Plastic and Single Use Items bylaw last November, with a six-month education and awareness phase followed by a further six-month grace period, after which staff will report back to council, prior to any enforcement. If council directs staff to start enforcement, an educational approach still will be a priority followed, if necessary, by a fine of $200 that could be levied for a number of offences. The B.C. government a year ago, gave cities authority to ban plastic bags without provincial approval.

It would be hard not to notice all the roadwork taking place on the South Delta side of the George Massey Tunnel. The series of improvements along the Highway 99 corridor are to tie into the replacement project for the tunnel, which will see a new crossing built by 2030. The improvements are aimed at easing traffic congestion and supporting transit on both sides of the aging crossing, all in advance of the tunnel’s replacement. The Highway 99/17A interchange improvements are expected to be complete this fall, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Those improvements include the extension and widening of the northbound Highway 99 off-ramp approach to the Highway 17A intersection, upgrading the George Massey Tunnel bike shuttle stop and improvements to cycling facilities in and around the interchange.

The Highway 99 bus-on-shoulder transit lanes are expected to be complete in spring 2023. The lanes will tie into dedicated transit lanes through the new eightlane tunnel to bring free-flowing transit across the river and improving the quality and reliability of public transit in the region, the ministry explains. On the Richmond side of the tunnel, ground was officially broken recently on the new five-lane Steveston interchange, also part of the corridor project. The Richmond project will see the replacement of the existing two-lane overpass at Steveston Highway and Highway 99 with a five-lane structure that accommodates two eastbound lanes and three westbound lanes, including a left-turn lane. The ministry says work is ramping up on the interchange site this summer with clearing and utility relocations getting underway in the coming weeks. Major construction will begin this year with the new interchange expected to be in operation in 2025.

A yellow helicopter flying in the skies above Tsawwassen last week caused quite a stir on social media, but there was no need for alarm. FortisBC confirmed in an email to the Optimist that they were in fact conducting aerial inspections of their gas transmission lines. “These annual inspections are part of our integrity management program to make sure that our natural gas system continues to operate safely and reliably,” said corporate communications specialist Holly Harrison. “Talon Helicopters, on behalf of FortisBC, is
performing LiDAR mapping which requires flying at low altitudes to inspect the lines. Talon Helicopters is permitted by Transport Canada to fly at low levels in order to inspect the lines that previously had to be inspected by foot. This covers more area in less time, is more cost-effective and safer for our field crews.” She said the aerial inspections are taking place across various regions in B.C., including the Lower Mainland, from mid-July through August. Since the helicopter will be passing through a number of regional districts, flight time over a single area will be minimal and there will be no ground activity related to the flights.

These are the top crash sites in the city SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The number of accidents in the George Massey Tunnel has gone down over the last couple of years. That is according to recently released crash statistics for 2021 from ICBC, which also provided numbers for locations over the previous four years. The numbers indicate that the tunnel in 2021 had 85 accidents. That is down from 102 crashes in 2020 and 186 crashes in 2019. Prior to 2019, the number of crashes was trending up the previous two years. To improve safety, the province undertook the $40 million George Massey Tunnel Safety and Reliability Improvements Project, which included improving brightness and visibility within the 63-year-old crossing. Other components included an upgrade to the fire alarm, ventilation and electrical systems as well as drainage improvements.
OPTIMIST FILE
The province undertook a safety improvement project for the George Massey Tunnel which included improving brightness and visibility within the 63-year-old crossing. Meanwhile, the Alex Fraser Bridge had 260 crashes in 2021. That is up from 217 crashes in 2020, but still lower than the 304 bridge crashes in 2019. The ICBC statistics also listed in order Delta’s top sites for vehicular crashes last year, and 120 Street (Scott Road) and 72 Avenue topped the list at 110 crashes. That was followed by 120 Street and Nordel Way,
which saw 103 crashes. Other than the tunnel, South Delta roadways were much further down the list of crash sites compared to North Delta. The top South Delta crash site was 56 Street at Highway 17 and the turning lane where 51 accidents were reported, followed by Highway 17A and Highway 99 which had 41 crashes.
Delta council earlier this year endorsed a recommendation by the engineering department for the city to undertake safety enhancements at 20 intersections as part of a new overall road safety strategy. Most of them will occur in North Delta, identified as the top crash locations according to ICBC and Delta Emergency Services collision data.
It’s part of Delta’s new Vision Zero Safety Strategy. Vision Zero is a multinational road traffic safety project that aims to achieve a road system with no fatalities or serious injuries. One of the key differences between Vision Zero and traditional approaches to road safety is that traffic collisions are considered preventable, viewing safety as a shared responsibility between system designers, policy makers and road users through system level changes. An engineering department report notes the most common collision types at the top 20 intersections included rearend collisions, left turn opposing collisions, angle collisions and side swipe collisions. A number of short-term as well as longer-term measures are proposed. Intersections along Scott Road were excluded from a safety study undertaken by a consultant, as the 120 Street corridor is being reviewed separately in conjunction with the City of Surrey as part of the R6 RapidBus Project.

Off-leash enclosure plan for Paterson moves to next phase SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta council last week gave its support for a conceptual plan for an off-leash dog enclosure at Paterson Park. The conceptual plan includes split rail fencing, which parks and recreation staff believe will fit in well with the aesthetic of the Ladner park. In addition to perimeter fencing and doublegate access points, identified as priority items in community consultations, the scope of the project is to include a seating area for dog owners and improved drainage. A staff report notes that 81 per cent of respondents in a survey were generally supportive or satisfied with the size of the enclosure being 4,400-square-metres. The enclosure itself will be roughly equiva-

The project, which has a total budget of $150,000, will now move to a detailed design phase. The large enclosure is to be located adjacent to the existing parking lot.
The report notes the enclosure does not alter the existing boundaries of the designated dog off-leash area in the park, but simply provides an enclosed portion of the off-leash area should dog owners wish to have their dog in a safe, fenced space. The city is also planning to add a new offleash enclosure at Pebble Hill Park in Tsawwassen.

ntitled. Rude. Disrespectful. Just a few of the words – at least printable words – that have been used on social media to describe a confrontation between a cyclist and a farmer on the dike trail. As reported by the Optimist in its July 21st edition, farmer Brent Kelly, who, along with other Delta farmers, use the dike trail several times a day to move heavy equipment from one part of their farm operation to the other. Most of the time there is no trouble – except for that recent Sunday, when Kelly was stalled in his tracks for an extended amount of time as a cyclist refused to move. The cyclist took out his cell phone and proceeded to make a long call all while blocking the trail. Other farmers behind Kelly were all inconvenienced by this delay. I’m curious why this cyclist made this decision to block this trail? Why he chose to exhibit such terrible behaviour and why he has now set off a firestorm of reaction on social media that is also throwing the whole cycling community under the bus? Kelly was quick to point out in our story that the vast majority of people give them the right of way, but here we have one bad apple that has spoiled the bunch. Delta is a long-standing farming community. It was built on the backs of farmers. Farming is a time sensitive business and when farm vehicles need to get through, we all need to get out of the way and let them pass. A five second move by this cyclist lets the farm equipment get through and he can then go about his day. No harm, no foul. Instead, this has turned into a heated war of words on social media and a really bad look for the cycling community.

inally, a good stretch of dry warm weather! Our local fields are catching up on the worst spring start in 40 years. As if dealing with Mother Nature was not enough, a 30 percent rise in fertilizer prices and even higher increases for fuel have left farmers scrambling to adapt. Farming is a complex industry and there are many logistical challenges that face our local farmers. I hear about these challenges at our regular Delta Agricultural Advisory Committee meetings where issues such as diking, sea level rise, education, climate change, irrigation and other issues are discussed and debated. A regular topic of discussion is the access to and the maintenance of our extensive dike system in Delta. ACC member and local farmer Brent Kelly knows the ins and outs of our dike system. He and other members of the AAC have described how the City of Delta and Metro Vancouver have worked very

hard to ensure that the livelihoods of our farming community are made as painless as possible and that issues around irrigation, pump stations and dike maintenance are reconciled to collectively ensure that local food security remains intact. You may have read the story in last week’s Optimist about the encounter Brent had with a cyclist on the dike. For whatever reason, this cyclist took an aggressive stance and would not allow Brent’s spray rig to pass him. The standoff
lasted 40 minutes or so, and if you are a farmer working several non-contiguous fields at once, time is a luxury you just don’t have. The lack of respect from the weekend warrior cyclist toward our farming community is astounding to me. Brent is a soft spoken, articulate man that runs a successful farming operation that is currently putting “new potatoes” on your dinner plate. Despite his quiet demeanour, I know I would never want to cross him. The cyclist is lucky as it appears that Mr. Kelly is a patient and tolerant man as well. We have all been stuck behind farm vehicles. Next time you are, rather than swear below or above your breath, remember that agriculture is an industry. It is dirty, sometimes smelly, immensely complex but guess what….it feeds us! The next time you are slowed down by a farm vehicle on the dike or elsewhere, give a wave or a toot from your horn to someone whom you should respect and be thankful for.

Debate of cars versus bikes reaches new low
Editor: The car vs bike debate has reached a new low. A heated discussion on a local Facebook group last week, which included calling for the banning of all bikes as well as calling cyclists “the real domestic terrorists” is absolutely despicable. As it always seems to be, we South Deltans like to say we’re an accepting group, but those calling for cyclists to go somewhere else to bike safely seem to have the opposite mindset. In no way should this letter be considered unbridled praise for cyclists – there
are obviously bad apples in every group. I should note that I am someone who hasn’t ridden a bike through town in many years and drives almost everywhere I go. As a society, we must not fall into the trap of blaming everyone in a group for the actions of a select few. For those who said they have “little to no respect for cyclists,” imagine grouping the entirety of drivers under the same category due to a few who exhibited some road rage one day. We would call that discriminatory, no? For those calling
cyclists “entitled,” I have only one suggestion for you… take a good look in the mirror, because dogpiling against a group of people who are largely minding their own business isn’t a good look. How about instead of acting all high and mighty on social media, we actually come together to find solutions to this problem without tearing each other down? We’re a civilized society after all. And if we want to keep calling ourselves a welcoming and accepting community, we should probably put our money where our mouth is. Kody Garbutt

Editor: I write this letter in response to Cathy Wilkins, whose letter to the “sad, old man” and all the other things of assumption she wrote to him (note the Delta Police only said the suspect appears to be a Caucasian male between the ages of 50 and 60, not exactly old for one and how does she know that he is sad or so ashamed, and is filled with hate and anger?) I am not sure why she and others quoted in the Optimist, including yourself, Mr. Jacques, Mayor George Harvie, Delta Coun. Dylan Kruger, Delta Police Chief, etc.,
all came to the conclusion that this defacing of the flag was motivated by hate. Why always so quick to use the “hate” word, while telling your readers how welcoming and inclusive of all people you are and that love always wins? Even as Ms. Wilkins finishes with her promise that the love of the “multitude of us” and their love for all mankind will include “even you”, seems to ring hollow after her less than loving words to the “sad, old man”. I would put forth another idea that maybe the “sad, old man” might
be sad or angry because he has been excluded or hurt by the “multitude of them” and is trying to send a message not of hate, but of hurt. Who knows, only the person who did this, whether he be man or woman, or even one of the LGBQT2S+ community? Maybe, should there be a next time, those of you who automatically use the hate word, and especially the churches, can find it in your “loving” hearts to give the benefit of the doubt to this person and not be so quick to jump to the “hate” word, but to the “hurt” word. Thank-you for welcoming us to this community
Editor: I wanted to write the Optimist, as I had picked up my first copy last week. My family and I have recently relocated to Tsawwassen after 15-plus years abroad. My wife and I are from Ottawa and Toronto respectively, but have built our teaching careers, and started our family in Asia. I had quiet hopes when I accepted a job at Southpointe Academy that Tsawwassen might be a place that I could call home, after so many years of ex-pat life. Nothing could have prepared me for the incredible welcome we have received from so many members of the community.
Our new landlord Jas was warm and genuine from the start, she took a gamble on an eager family of four with no Canadian ties. Thomas at Tsawwassen Landing has taken extra lengths to make sure that everything in our new build was easily sorted and working perfectly. Gagandeep at Telus sorted us out and cheerfully made sure my wife could work from home with Wi-Fi in all parts of the townhome. Bruce and Alex at OpenBox who sorted us out with not only a pile of electronics but a few fantastic tips from experiences and personal anecdotes. They even sent us on our way with two welcome Starbucks cards! The team at Rona
set us up with immediate delivery at a speed (apparently unheard of) for our patio furniture so we could enjoy this beautiful Tsawwassen sun. We spent a recent morning drinking Chai, getting faces painted and hauling a load of local veg and eggs from Southlands Market, and staring in disbelief at each other that we are so fortunate to have joined such a community. Thank you, neighbors, for welcoming us with that incredible Tsawwassen charm. We didn’t know anything about your lovely town before we stumbled across it, and we feel like we have been blessed to join B.C.’s best-kept secret. The Halushka family
BVOR stream can help pay it forward Editor: As a newcomer that has lived across the Lower Mainland, Ladner is a breath of fresh air. On top of the affordability and convenience, the village benefits from a high degree of neighbourliness and community-pride. My family has experienced such a warm welcome since moving here in 2020, that I cannot help but think about who else may benefit from such an opportunity. The growing numbers of people around the world victimized by forced displacement certainly top the list, which has more than doubled in the last 10 years to more than 100 million, according to
the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). A slightly more comprehensible two million people are considered to be in urgent need of resettlement, meaning they are living in temporary shelters, outside of their countries of origin, with no conceivable path to returning home. While many of us in Canada are awed by the contributions of those on the frontlines when conflict or catastrophe hits, our geographical distance from ground zero can get in the way of our providing more substantive support. As Canadians, however, we are better positioned than perhaps anybody else to positively affect those in need of
asylum, given our unique ability to privately sponsor refugees. What’s more, through Canada’s Blended Visa-Office Referred (BVOR) resettlement stream, we can even split the first year costs with the government to offer some of the world’s most vulnerable people a chance to rebuild. For those of us moved to help those displaced by violence or persecution, refugee resettlement ought to be our frontline. In gratitude for the welcoming atmosphere my family has found in Ladner. I certainly view the BVOR stream as an ideal opportunity to pay it forward. Jordon Miller

Delta healthcare facilities are seeing a return of housekeeping employees back into the Fraser Health Authority fold. The province last year announced it would be ending 21 housekeeping and food service contracts in the healthcare system, with most existing contracts with private sector providers expiring this year. The move means that, under Bill 47, an estimated 4,000 employees will return to be directly employed by the various health authorities. On Thursday, Fraser Health said it is welcoming back this month 474 housekeeping services workers to 18 various region health facilities including Delta Hospital, Mountain View Manor and the Irene Thomas Hospice. The change comes after almost 20 years of the services having been contracted out to private companies. “Bringing health service workers back into the public system means better working conditions for them, better care
for patients and a stronger healthcare system for all of us,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, in a news release. “I am proud of Fraser Health for the incredible repatriation efforts they’ve made thus far.” Delta North NDP MLA Ravi Kahlon said in a news release that, “Housekeeping workers play an essential role in our healthcare system, helping keep our patients healthy and facilities clean. Bringing these vital workers back into Fraser Health gives them the working conditions, compensation and respect they deserve.” The province notes that to address inequality and enhance working conditions for employees in healthcare facilities, it is ensuring that workers have the benefits, wages and working conditions that they deserve to be able to help patients. Evidence has shown that employees who feel secure and safe in their jobs provide higher-quality care for people, and in turn, employers can attract and retain staff at a higher and more consistent level, the province said. Delta climate action moving on several fronts SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta is getting extra funding from the province for climate change initiatives. Currently updating its Community Energy and Emissions Plan, which focuses on the community’s efforts to reduce energy consumption related to transportation, buildings and solid waste, Delta was among the communities that has signed the Climate Action Charter. Those communities were eligible to receive 100 per cent of the carbon tax paid on natural gas and vehicle fuels as a rebate through what was called the Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP). Delta was getting funding under that program until it was discontinued by the province in May 2021. A recent staff report on Delta’s Climate Action Program and 2021 highlights notes that the province this May announced the new Local Government Climate Action Program (LGCAP) to replace CARIP.

The Electric Vehicle Strategy was adopted by Delta council in 2020. A recent report notes Delta has installed 30 Level 2 public charging stations and recently completed an assessment to understand gaps and future needs for public EV charging infrastructure.
The program is designed to provide predictable, annual, and long-term funding for local governments and B.C. Modern Treaty Nations to take climate action aligned with provincial and local government objectives. Delta will be receiving $346,000 annually, which is approximately $120,000 more than what was received under the CARIP program. The city will receive the funding for three years to support local climate initiatives aligned with the CleanBC Roadmap and the draft Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy. As far as Delta climate action highlights in 2021, those included improving energy efficiency in buildings and supporting electric vehicles at both the corporate and community levels. At the community level, Delta advanced climate action through such initiatives as the updated tree protection and regulation bylaw and the new plastic bags and single-use items bylaw. The ban on plastic checkout bags officially went into effect on June 6.
Council also recently gave final approval to a bylaw amendment for the city’s electric vehicle and electric bicycle parking and charging requirements. Delta’s former regulations included a requirement for EV charging in new multi-unit residential or mixed-use buildings with more than six dwelling units. A minimum of 20 percent of all required parking spaces had to each be provided with either a minimum Level 2 charging station, roughed-in raceway or cable and electrical panel capacity to accommodate a station. The new rules will see 100 per cent of vehicle spaces with either a dedicated Level 2 outlet or charger, as well as resident bicycle storage areas having one outlet per four bicycle spaces. Visitor parking spaces will not be required to provide EV charging. As far as the updated tree bylaw, staff are currently reviewing what other measures can be taken following continued complaints by residents about clear-cutting on lots.

The City of Delta is hoping the province reviews the eligibility criteria for rental assistance and implement changes that would qualify single people with diverse abilities for financial support.
Rent help needed for more, accordingtocity SANDOR GYARMATI
sgy arma ti@de lta- o p ti m i s t .c o m
The provincial government should consider financial support for rental assistance for single people with diverse abilities. The City of Delta has submitted that proposal as one of its resolutions to Union of BC Municipalities, which will hold its annual convention in Whistler from Sept. 12 to 16. The motion notes that while BC Housing’s Rental Assistance Program provides critical financial support for lowincome families to help with monthly rent payments, rental assistance is currently only available to families or people with dependent children, while single people do not qualify for assistance. However, there is a growing and urgent need for supportive housing for all ages and abilities, including those with developmental disabilities, according to a Delta report, which notes that in B.C. there are more than 5,000 people in need of this type of housing, at least 425 of whom live in Delta. Individuals with differing abilities need the full range of housing options as other segments of the population do. Inclusive housing is the key to independence, stability and belonging. The lack of assistance is a significant disadvantage for many who wish to move out of their fam-
ily home and gain independence in their own apartment. “As the Province deals with the ongoing housing crisis, it must ensure that the full spectrum of housing needs is considered and planned for into the future, and that funding and housing subsidies are flexible to ensure maximum impact. The provincial government is requested to review the eligibility criteria for rental assistance, and implement changes that would qualify single people with diverse abilities for financial support,” the report notes. A comprehensive community and housing profile report for Delta in 2020 noted participants during community consultations spoke about a significant need for inclusive housing for people with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities as well as seniors needing supports. Parents of children with developmental disabilities expressed concern over the housing options for their children as those parents age or pass away, the report noted, adding there’s few affordable housing options. Delta council last year approved a new housing action plan for the city which identifies several strategies to address housing needs and support the development of more priority unit types, including providing incentives.

It also found that 77 per cent support contributing public land to nonprofit and co-op housing developments for new affordable homes. Will housing, homelessness and poverty be big issues in this year’s municipal election in the City of Delta? That could be the case as a recent survey found those are the dominant issues for British Columbians, regardless of where in the province they live. The survey conducted by Research Co. for BC Non-Profit Housing Association, the Co-operative Housing Federation of BC and the Aboriginal Housing Management Association found those issues transcend all demographics, ages and genders. A recent news release by the BC Non-Profit Housing Association noted the findings are grounded in the increasingly severe lack of housing affordability in B.C. where approximately 23,000 people experienced homelessness in 2019, and 20 per cent of renters spend over half of their income on housing and utilities. “These results and the importance of this as an issue should send a clear message to all incumbents and candidates seeking municipal office this fall that they need to bring a real commitment and real ideas to the table,” said Mario Canseco of Research Co. “The need is great, and the research shows that voters will be prioritizing candidates that will commit to taking concrete action to address local
opments. Delta council last month approved a new bylaw aimed at encouraging more affordable nonprofit housing by waiving development cost charges, a recommendation which originally came from the new housing action plan. According to Delta staff, such developments typically do not have the same available capital as for-profit developments, meaning that DCCs can represent a significant financial barrier to the provision of important affordable housing. The Research Co. survey results are based on an online study conducted from June 12 to June 14, 2022, among 2,000 B.C. adults.

housing needs.” The survey found that 39 per cent of British Columbians rate housing, homelessness, and poverty as their number one concern. That is more than double the closest second place issue, healthcare, at 18 per cent. “With upcoming civic elections, voters should remember that municipalities shape the future of communities and the type of housing options that will be available decades into the future,” said Jill Atkey, CEO of BC Non-Profit Housing Association, in the news release. “While the challenges are clear, there are also solutions. A recent report to council on the city’s Poverty Reduction Action Plan, which has a series of recommendations that are to be incorporated into Delta’s Social Action Plan, notes that while
poverty is not endemic throughout the city, there are more than 10,000 Delta residents currently living below the poverty line. City staff are in the process of updating Delta’s Social Action Plan and will be working with each department to utilize information from a poverty needs assessment. The implementation of the recommended actions is contingent upon the availability of adequate resources and the continuous commit-

HAPPY BC DAY! BC is one of the most beautiful places in the world!
The Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society (FoSBS) was alerted to the presence of the highly invasive European Green Crab in the Fraser Delta region in late 2019. Learning of its capability to erode estuarine banks and to destroy important salt marsh and eelgrass meadow habitats, FoSBS quickly developed a trapping program to monitor this crab. FoSBS is a provincially registered, nonprofit society working as environmental stewards in conservation, citizen science, education and restoration in Boundary Bay and the Fraser River Delta. Arriving in Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1998, the European Green Crab has become one of the 10 most unwanted invasive species in the world. Due to the ability of early life stages of the crab to travel easily as plankton via ship ballast water and ocean currents, European Green Crab has continued to spread throughout the Pacific Northwest. Washington State confirmed the crab off San Juan Island in 2016 and Fisheries
and Oceans Canada discovered it in Boundary Bay in 2019. It is an effective predator of native clams and oysters, destroys eelgrass beds and negatively impacts native invertebrates and fish. This year FoSBS is conducting crab trapping at four Boundary Bay sites, one of which is led by partner organization A Rocha. Volunteers are mostly catching native shore crabs, hermit crabs, snails, sculpins and stickleback. Two recent trappings found first three then four male European Green Crabs at the Blackie Spit area of Crescent Beach. Trapping began in May and continues on low tide days. Full data analysis is planned for this fall. This environmental monitoring program is volunteer driven and we thank them all. People interested in participating in the program should contact FoSBS at: www.birdsonthebay.ca/ marine-projects. Volunteers of all ages are required to complete a training program so that they can be listed on the FoSBS marine license. Editor’s note: Nature Notes is a monthly column written by the Delta Naturalists and or their partner organizations.

Keeping material out of the landfill and getting into the hands of those in need. That’s the goal of a 505-Junk clothing drive to benefit local charities. On Monday, Aug. 1 between noon and 4 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Sun Festival, 505-Junk will accept collectable clothing at the Winskill Park parking lot at 56th Street & 9th Avenue. The clothing will then be dropped off at the Salvation Army of Canada, where they fundraise for local programs and people in need. Additionally, 505-Junk will be donating $0.10 per pound to the Rotary Club to assist with their programs. “Our goal is to keep as much material out of the Delta landfill as possible, and clothing is a major contribu-
tor,” said Barry Hartman, co-founder and CEO of 505-Junk. “On average, Canadians throw out 81 pounds of textiles annually, which contributes to the 10 million tonnes of clothing that end up in the landfill each year. This clothing can not only be recycled and repurposed, but even better, can end up in the hands of people who need it most. “Our goal is to spread awareness and help provide people in Delta an avenue to repurpose their clothing.” Hartman says 505-Junk really believes in contributing to the local community. “Many of our team members grew up and still live in Tsawwassen, including our partners myself, Scott Foran, and Alex Elsey,” said Hartman. “So come on out and give your unwanted clothing a second chance, while helping out some great causes.”

Summer Check-up
I hope you are enjoying the glorious summer days in our beautiful city. We’re almost halfway through summer already. I hope you are spending time intentionally rather than allowing time to slip away this summer. Here are some suggestions on how to redeem the time this summer: 1. Take advantage of the warm weather to enjoy an intentional time of rest. Summer provides an amazing opportunity for us to enjoy the fruit of our toil (Eccles. 2:24). If you can take time off to travel, this is a great time to do that. In Exodus, God is portrayed as the Anti-Pharaoh who frees us from slavery. It is good for us to delight in the rest that he provides. Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath—he wants us to rest in him. He sees us as his vice-regents in his kingdom rather than slaves. Your productivity
Minister’s Minute PAUL PARK
SOUTH DELTA BAPTIST CHURCH
is important, but God is after your heart and desires a relationship with you more than just your productivity. So, celebrate being under his reign by enjoying the good things he has given you. 2. Take care of one another. Although Sabbath is important, resting does not mean we have to stop doing good. Jesus demonstrated that he did not stop doing good for other
people on the Sabbath (Mt. 12:9-13). Summer can be a difficult time for non-profit organizations because volunteers go away for the summer. If you have some time to volunteer at organizations that help other people thrive, consider volunteering. Also, you may know people battling mental and physical illnesses. They don’t get a break just because it’s summer. Even while you enjoy a restful season, think of those who are experiencing loneliness and hurt, and take some time to serve them with your presence. Be creative and discover how you can find joy in life and serve the people you love at the same time. This may look like taking them out for a picnic lunch or inviting them out to a hike next time you plan a hiking trip. I hope the rest of your summer will be restful and purposeful.

Ladner dancers hit the world stage PHIL MELNYCHUK
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
A Ladner mom who took on the best the world has to offer in Irish dancing recently finished 70th out of a field of 104,mostly younger dancers. “I felt like that was an accomplishment,” said Lia Munro, 38, who dances with the O’Brien School of Irish Dance in Ladner. She, along with fellow school member Halina Grund, in the U-17 category, were the first two from the Ladner school to make it to the North American Irish Dance Championships. Munro has been dancing since she was 10, but quit the stage when she was 20. Becoming a mom and other demands led to her packing up her dancing shoes and costumes and just relying on memories of what it was like to be on stage. But when her daughter Jaida started dancing five years ago, Lia rejoined the adult group, content just to be in the background, knowing her better days were behind her – until one of the competitive dancers broke her foot, just days before St. Patrick’s Day events. With the group needing a substitute, Lia stepped up, and during the course of two dances, she rejoined the heady world of competitive dance.
CLAYTON MUNRO PHOTO
Halina Grund and Lia Munro danced against the world in Montreal, recently. After five years of training and trying to get back to 20-something condition, Munro competed in the over-22 age category, July 1 to 5, at the
North American Irish Dance Championships in Montreal. The competition involved dancers from around the world, mostly from the U.S. and mostly
20 years younger than her. “It was just the excitement of being able to get back there,” she said. It wasn’t certain she’d be on the stage however. She had to stop practising the week before to deal with a knee injury. But on competition day, she was good to go. Having reached the international stage, Lia wants to do the same again next year, when the North American championships take place in Nashville, Tenn. But first she has to qualify in November. Halina is similarly motivated, said her mom Brandy. Competing in Montreal was an amazing experience and Halina, who finished in the top half of the competition, wants to get back to the nationals for which she’s already qualified, said Brandy. In fact, the championships have just “inflamed their motivation to continue training,” she said of Halina and Lia. For Halinda, training goes on most days of the week, if not in dance, then strength training, stretching or biking or hiking. “It seems like more of a performance sport but they’re actually very strong athletes,” said Brandy. “It’s actually a pretty cool sport. It’s her love. It’s her passion.”
Delta author urges readers to ‘chase their dreams’
“It was great to be alive. I was 19 years old and was on the radio in a small town…” Following your dream gives you the freedom to try anything else in your lifetime. Aspiring to be a radio DJ at 12-years-old; at 19 Delta’s Larry Amstutz realized his dream only to leave broadcasting a relatively short time later. The heartbreaking decision to leave his dream career puts him on a 40-year path towards “finding his groove” and contentment. Finding My Groove published by Friesen
Press, takes you on a journey across Canada and across time. People yearn to fulfill their dreams and yet don’t give themselves permission to do so. Through a conversational style, the author demonstrates that it is okay to chase that dream, even if in doing so it becomes apparent at some point that there is something else that really is your purpose. Permission to try and fail, to live and learn, and to love, be heartbroken and love again is shared through personal stories. “When I was 12-years-
old and dreamt of being a radio announcer, I had this mental image of myself wearing a white shirt and necktie, sitting in front of a microphone, wearing headphones in a radio studio in a skyscraper…” decades later I “…found myself working at my office in a skyscraper in Vancouver… white shirt and tie included…” (although now working in the financial sector) “…as I swiveled in my chair and looked over the lights of the city it struck me that I was living the scene I had imagined for myself when I was young,” he
said. “It was a profound moment for me, and I was moved; transported back to my younger self in the logging camp so far away.” Amstutz grew up in a Vancouver Island logging camp and in small towns on the Island; worked in forestry, mining, and other resource sector jobs; and studied and worked in radio broadcasting, his childhood dream career. He left those dreams behind to move to Toronto and climb the rungs in department store merchandising, human resources, and
training; entered the financial sector back in B.C.; and found his “vibe in the not-forprofit sector. Now married and retired, the he lives in Delta with his wife Trisha, their terrier Gus, and a collection of acoustic guitars and his prized Vintage 60’s Fender Telecaster. Finding My Groove is available for order from most major online book retailers including the Friesen Press Bookstore and Amazon. The eBook is available for Kindle, iBooks, Kobo, Nook, and GooglePlay. -Submitted

Celebration of summer is back with the Sun Festival PHIL MELNYCHUK
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
It’s been a long, cold, lonely spring, but here comes the Tsawwassen Sun Festival to brighten up our summer. Sun Fest is this weekend July 30, 31 and Aug. 1. With a jam-packed schedule, there’s something for everyone, although Monday is by far the busiest day. To get things going, the boys and girls of summer are back, with the three-day, 20-team Tsawwassen Sun Festival Slopitch Tournament that takes place at the centre of the Sun Festival - Winskill Park. Round robin play starts on Saturday and playoffs are on the holiday Monday. There’s no need to worry about getting thirsty because the Four Winds Brewery beer garden is open all three days. That’s not the only competition on the field however. The Grass Volleyball Tournament takes place Saturday, July 30, also in Winskill Park. It’s only $20 a person or $120 a team if you want to put
a squad together and compete. If so, go to sunfestival.ca to find out how to register. For a little slower pace, bingo is back on July 31 and Aug. 1, in the South Delta Rec Centre. And, have you ever watched a movie outdoors? On Sunday, July 31 at Diefenbaker Park, you can catch Sing 2, under the summer stars. Bring a towel or blanket and some snacks to enhance your movie watching experience. The movie starts at dusk. B.C. Day Monday, Aug. 1 is the big day for the festival. The day kicks off at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, thanks to the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club. And if you get hungry throughout the day, food trucks will be on site to enhance a stroll through the Marketplace which will be set up in centre field. In addition, the TOOB, the Tsawwassen Order of Old B’s, will be frying up their curly fries next to the beer garden. A highlight of the holiday Monday is the Rotary Parade which starts at 11 a.m. and
FILE PHOTO
The Rotary Parade, which starts at 11 a.m. on B.C. Day, is one of the highlights of Tsawwassen Sun Festival weekend. runs southbound on 56th Street, from 16th Avenue, to Winskill Park. If you want to join in with a parade exhibit, you can register online at: www.sunfestival.ca/rotaryparade-registration. Monday is also the big day
because of the Sun Festival Classic Car show, back for a seventh year in a row. That goes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Winskill Park. Music and awards and nice rides are part of the event. With lots of people at the fes-
tival, that means lots of vehicles. Parking at Winskill Park will only be for those with disabilities, but there will be copious amounts at South Delta Secondary at 53A Street and Eighth A Avenue. A shuttle service then can whisk you over to the festival site.

A golden trip to Finland for Masters athlete Mark Pinckard is a world champion over 800 metres MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A year ago he smashed a longstanding provincial record. Now Mark Pinckard is a world champion. The 62-year-old Boundary Bay resident captured the 800 metre event in the men’s 60-64 age class at the recent World Masters Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland. He also added a bronze in the 1,500 race. It was last summer when Pinckard shattered a 19-yearold Canadian record in the 800m at the B.C. Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Bear Creek Park. The former record belonged to renowned B.C. Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Harold Morioka. It was a performance that instantly made him a podium favourite nearly a year later in Finland. “It was an unusual place to
be for me and there may have been a little bit of pressure for sure,” said Pinckard. He was fortunate enough to comfortably qualify out of his semi-final heat then had a strong finishing kick in the final to out-pace competitors from Great Britain and Denmark and finish in a time of 2:13.75. “The three of us broke away from the rest of the group and the guy from Denmark was running on his own for the first 700 metres,” recalled Pinckard. “I was able to pass him with about 100 metres to go and the British guy couldn’t match my pace. “The whole thing about Masters track and field is getting to the competition healthy. I’ve been close before but have run into injuries prior to getting to the championships and that has hindered my performances. This time I have been healthy all year and my training had gone really well. I felt strong going into it and my training
times were going to lead to a podium finish.” Pinckard had four days rest before competing in the 1500m. The trip to Europe initially got off to a rough start when his suitcase was lost somewhere among the three flights required to get to Tampere. The luggage still hasn’t been located. Pinckard was fortunate enough to pack his track shoes in his carry-on but he did have to borrow a Canadian jersey top from another competitor. At home, he regularly works out with the South Surreybased Ocean Athletics Track and Field Club where many of his training mates are decades younger than him. He did some sprinting as a young teen but then turned his attention to rugby before his career and raising a family. It was in his 40s he began running again, initially doing a marathon then shifting to the track.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
The pros and cons of early retirement
Retirement is a milestone that is often the byproduct of decades of hard work. Though a growing number of working professionals have no intention of ever retiring, the vast majority of adults look forward to the day when they can call it a career. The prospect of early retirement is enticing to millions of people. Though retiring early may seem like a no brainer for individuals in position to do so, a careful consideration of the pros and cons of early retirement can ensure people make the best decision. Benefits of early retirement For many people, early retirement is less about finding a beach to relax on and more about pivoting to a second career. Early retirement is often about turning a long-time passion into a second career. That can help adults achieve a lifelong dream, making it one of the better reasons to retire early. Another advantage to retiring early is the chance to spend more quality time with family. Early retirement enables individuals to escape that round-the-
clock career commitment, affording retirees a chance to spend more unfiltered quality time with family. Retiring early also provides an opportunity to escape a daily grind that many people have indicated has become increasingly burdensome in recent years. Work is a leading cause of stress for many people, and stress has been linked to a host of health problems. Individuals who can retire early can benefit from less stress in their lives. Disadvantages to retiring early Retiring early can seem like a dream, but it could turn into a nightmare for people whose finances aren’t as robust as they need to be to support a lengthy retirement. Life expectancy has been on the rise in developed countries since 1900, so retiring too early carries some significant financial risk for people who have saved but not necessarily saved enough. Retiring early also could make people more vulnerable to cognitive decline than they would be if they keep working. Out-of-pocket medical costs are another significant disadvantage to

Senior citizens account for a significant percentage of the overall population. As of 2021, Statistics Canada reported there were roughly 7.1 million persons age 65 and older living in Canada. People are living longer than ever, and as individuals age, the demand for senior services continues to grow - as does the need to be patient and respect the elderly. There are many ways to show seniors just how much they’re appreciated. 1. Help with chores. Lend a hand with chores around the house that may have grown difficult for seniors. This can include mowing the lawn, weeding garden beds, shoveling snow, raking leaves, or even taking the garbage pails in and out on collection days. 2. Visit more often. Frequent visits are one of the simplest ways to show seniors you care. Whether seniors live in a private home or managed care facility, visitors brighten their days, especially if they no longer get out and about as frequently as they once did. Spending time together and sharing stories can

When organizing parties and special events, consider the needs of seniors on the guest list. Add music from their era to playlists or DJ requests. Seat seniors with mobility issues near exits and restrooms. Make sure to arrange for photos with the guest of honor to keep family history alive. 4. Thank seniors. Find any reason to thank a senior. Perhaps someone served in the military or volunteered their time
with children. Celebrate accomplishments big and small with a simple “thank you.” 5. Prepare a meal. Invite a special senior over for a home-cooked meal with the family. Make it a regular occurrence on the calendar. If he or she cannot get out easily, bring a hot meal over to his or her place, instead. Simple gestures of gratitude and appreciation can brighten a senior’s day and let that person know he or she has not been forgotten. -Metro Creative

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE What is your attitude about dementia? With at least 70,000 British Columbians living with dementia currently including many in Metro Vancouver - challenging the stigma associated with the disease is fundamental to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. As part of this vital work, the organization is releasing the results of a recent study into British Columbians’ awareness of and attitudes about the disease. “Stigma is a significant barrier to people living with dementia and caregivers reaching out for support,” says Jen Lyle, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “Understanding people’s perceptions of the disease is key to helping us change the conversation about it so people see they don’t have to face
the journey alone.” Conducted by Leger Canada, the study included a quantitative survey of three groups: general British Columbian respondents, as well as Chinese and South Asian respondents. The survey, as well as the online discussion boards that accompanied it, probed at people’s understanding of dementia, their personal experience with it and their knowledge of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. as a source of support and education. In relation to people’s attitudes about the disease, the study found: * More than seven in 10 respondents believe there is stigma about dementia experienced by the people living with it, while half of respondents reported feeling a diag-
nosis of dementia means the end of a meaningful life. * Almost four in five respondents agree there’s an increased likelihood of depression, emotional stress and financial problems among caregivers who are supporting someone living with dementia. * Only three in 10 respondents in the general and Chinese populations, and six in 10 within the South Asian population, believe there are adequate supports within the community and our health-care system for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Three wins from a trip to nationals
Heavily favoured Ladner Pioneers host North Shore in WCSLA championship series MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It may feel more like a three-night coronation than a championship series when the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association (WCSLA) wraps up its 2022 campaign next week. The Ladner Pioneers will put their perfect season on the line in a best-offive championship series against the North Shore Indians. Games one and three are slated for Sungod Arena on Aug. 2 and 6 respectively (8 p.m.). It would be a big surprise if the series goes beyond that. Ladner rolled through the regular season (16-0-0) with little in the way of resistance thanks to a line-up loaded with National Lacrosse League (NLL) talent. The stacked roster is all about taking a run for the franchise’s third-ever national title at next month’s President’s Cup in Leduc, Alta. The trend in recent tournaments is teams from back east and Alberta have been led by NLL players to podium finishes. It has resulted in the Pioneers bolstering their line-up like they never have before with players that typically would be playing in the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) this summer. Calgary Roughnecks standout and Coquitlam native Tyler Pace passed up on his WLA season with the Langley
Thunder to lead the WCSLA in scoring with 75 points and 40 goals in 14 games. Hometown star and Vancouver Warriors veteran Logan Schuss skipped his WLA campaign in New West to pileup 58 points in 11 games for Ladner. Ryan Benesch, Zach Herreweyers and Phil Caputo are other pro snipers playing for the Pioneers, while the back-end features plenty of top end talent too including Matt Beers, Jeff Cornwall and goaltender Eric Penney. NLL playoff scoring leader Eli McLaughlin would make it a dozen in Ladner’s line-up for nationals if he recovers in time from a shoulder injury. It all adds up to the deepest roster in club history, but will it be enough to challenge for a national title? The lack of league competition likely means the Pioneers won’t be battle-tested until they arrive in Leduc. “For sure it’s a concern,” admitted head coach Ross Frehlick, following his team’s 14-6 regular season finale win over North Shore back on July 14. “We probably had about 20 really good minutes last night, but it’s tough when the games have gone the way they have. I think we have lost one period all season. “We are just going to have to work hard in practice and make sure we are fit for nationals. This is definitely a deeper team (than 2019). We are better at the back end and better in goal.”

The playoff are nearly here for homegrown standout and Vancouver Warriors star Logan Schuss, one of several National Lacrosse League players in the Ladner Pioneers’ line-up this season.
Pioneers honour Tim Winter for his 22 seasons
Tim Winter (left) was presented a plaque and a $1,000 travel voucher from Ladner Pioneers head coach Ross Frehlick on his jersey retirement night.
Tim Winter will have a constant reminder of his long and decorated lacrosse career every time he steps inside the Ladner Leisure Centre. The homegrown product has become the fourth player in the rich history of the Ladner Pioneers senior “B” lacrosse club to have his jersey retired. Winter was honoured during a special pre-game ceremony prior to the Pioneers’ regular season finale against the North Shore Indians on July 14. His #77 joins the likes of Ed
Schuss, John Schuss and Ross Frehlick on the east end wall of the arena. Winter played 22 seasons for the Pioneers and established himself among the top defenders in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association. He initially joined the team as a proven scorer in the junior ranks and continued that role for a couple of seasons before making the jump to the Western Lacrosse Association’s New West Salmonbellies in 1995. Winter returned to his home-

town club in time for Ladner to host the 1997 President’s Cup. The Pioneers won bronze that year then broke through the following season in Tuscarora, NY for its first national title in franchise history. They did it again in 2004 on B.C. soil as Ladner edged Kahnawake Mohawks 6-3 in Langley. It was part of a 12-year run Winter served as team captain before retiring in 2012. He also added another President’s Cup bronze medal in 2006 when Ladner hosted the tournament for the second time.

IslandersreturnfromOkanaganwithprovincialsilver The Delta Bantam B Islanders capped off a terrific season in impressive style with a silver medal finish at last weekend’s B.C. Lacrosse provincial championships in the North Okanagan. The impressive run concluded with a hard-fought 10-6 loss to regular season champion and undefeated Chilliwack in an all-Lower Mainland gold medal game. The difference was Chilliwack’s quick start that resulted in an early 4-0 lead. Goalie Matthew Marshall was named Delta’s game MVP. The Islanders advanced to the championship game thanks to a comefrom-behind 9-7 semi-final win over Abbotsford. Delta erupted for five unanswered goals in the final period for the thrilling result with goalie Riley Tan earning

game MVP honours. The tournament started with an 8-4 round-robin victory over Comox Valley with captain Logan Lawrence getting the nod for game MVP. A 5-4 overtime win against Williams
Lake followed. The deciding goal was scored three minutes into sudden death with Conover Van Iperen earning the game MVP. The Islanders then concluded roundrobin play Saturday morning with a 10-4
triumph over Cowichan Valley. Jayden Dhanda got the nod for Delta’s game MVP. Other tournament recognition included assistant captain Samuel Jackman receiving the Fair Play Award. It is given to the player that exemplifies fair play, puts forward a great effort for the team and plays the game with integrity. The Islanders roster also features: Levi Sadlo (A), Jack Taylor, Owen King, Niko Bocolas, Dayne Robinson, Hunter Gardner, Nishal Devia, Gurmukh Singh, Doug Miele (A), Riley Harker, Raine Jerome, Damon Tomyk, Willem Ter Keurs, James Ramage and Kinsley Mullis. The team was coached by Mike Miele, Jacob Steele and Jacob Dudar, with bench assistants Wayne Marshall, and Harshil Devia.

days of round-robin action and culminate with the gold medal game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Red Sox were already guaranteed spot in the tournament as the host association but there was little in the way of complacency when it came to
the playdowns. Ladner finished on top of the 13-team league with a 12-1-0 record to earn the No. 1 seed. Besides the impressive league run, the Red Sox also placed second at the recent Valley of the Champions Tournament in Kelowna, losing to an
Alberta academy team in the final. The other top five finishers in league play round out the participants at Cromie, including Vancouver Community (10-1-1), Vancouver Minor (9-3-0), Tsawwassen (8-4-0) and North Shore (8-4-0).

I have no hesitation in recommending Brian and Harry to anyone who is thinking of buying or selling a property . I had found an ideal house that I had to move on quickly , Brian and Harry not only sold my house in a very short time, but also negotiated a very good price on my new house, and made sure that all the paperwork went smoothly . Well done Brian and Harry, Thank you, Len and Jean Brian and Harry assisted us with a sale and purchase, the latter took some time as we had a definite image of the property we required! Brian encouraged us in our search, eventually we found the light, bright , spacious condo we had been seeking. Brian and Harry are both very knowledgeable of the supporting companies one needs to use, cleaning crew, home inspectors etc. Made our move easier to have a couple of names given to us for us to make a choice rather than having to peruse yellow pages or internet advertisements. I see Brian and Harry are becoming “Seniors Specialists”! They are well suited for this role, with their promptness, knowledge of their community, and a wonderfully laid back attitude. We are certainly enjoying living in the condo we found together. Thanks guys! Sue and Don. Call Brian or Harry for a FREE MARKET EVALUATION of your home! SHERRITT, Joan (nee Wettstein) BRUBACHER, Adeline Joan (Sherrell) Adeline Joan (Sherrell) Brubacher entered her Heavenly Home on July 14, 2022, at the age of 92 at Kin Village in Tsawwassen where she had been living for the past 5 1/2 years.
Adeline was born June 25, 1930 and was the oldest child of Samuel and Emmeline Sherrell. Two brothers followed, Roy and Albert. Adeline grew up in Ladner and lived out most of her life there. She was very thrilled to be the May princess one year. She completed grade 11 at Delta Secondary before taking her LPN in Vancouver. She especially enjoyed her practicum at Grace Hospital caring for the newborn babies. On June 9, 1950, she married the love of Abraham Brubacher and together they more than 67 years of marriage. They were with 5 children, losing one as a child from defect.
her life, enjoyed blessed a heart
Adeline loved the Lord with all her heart and accepted Him into her life at a young age. She was baptized and joined Ladner Baptist while growing up and later she and Abe were very involved in Ladner Baptist Church for many years. Adeline opened her own flower shop, Evergreen Florist in their home in 1972 and enjoyed floral work until retiring in 1989, making many friends while serving her customers. She also loved to garden, put up preserves for the winter months, bake, cook and entertain. The Brubacher home was a welcoming oasis for many missionaries, friends and of course, family. Sunday roast beef dinners, fresh bread and fruit pies were her specialities. MILLER, Peter Paul June 5, 1937 (Toronto) July 3, 2022 (Vancouver) It is with deep sadness that we share that Peter Miller of Tsawwassen has died following cardiac surgery. Peter was much loved, and was surrounded by his loved ones at the moment of his passing. Peter lived the bulk of his life in southern British Columbia. He was raised by Margaret and Carl in Gleneagles and Kitsilano with his brother Robert (Joyce), and then lived in Dunbar, Victoria and Beach Grove with Naomi, John and David (Meghan).
He graduated from Vancouver College before heading off to study Engineering at UBC (1960) and getting an MBA from Western Ontario (1964). He met Naomi by accident in the Toronto Airport in December 1962, and they married in 1965 at St Peter’s Church in New Westminster. Peter worked for many years at Eaton’s in Vancouver and Victoria, then spent some time working in the receivership business in the early 80s, before immersing himself in Real Estate development and investment for forty years. The work energized him, and he shared his knowledge of the investment side of the rental market generously. Peter was driven in life by skiing - it was the single activity that focused his life. He started on Grouse Mountain in Grade 4, when he was 10 years old, and could be found on the slopes into his 80s. He loved being a member of the UBC Ski Team from 1956-60, from which many life-long friendships emerged. Peter was the President of Sales and Marketing Executives (SME) in Vancouver and Victoria, as well as President of the Delta Community Living Society. He loved people, fishing, all kinds of music, golfing with his buddies and watching the unbelievable US political scene. Peter’s love of life never dimmed. He was a respected colleague, a dear friend, a beloved father, and a wonderful grandfather to Adelie and Reed. He was loved, and he will be missed by one and all. But above all, he was an extraordinary husband, and to this end the loss is inexpressible. A service will be held for Peter at Sacred Heart Parish in Delta on Friday August 5, 2022 at 10:30 am. Reception to follow at Tsawwassen Springs Golf & Country Club. All are welcome.
Peacefully and in the blessing of her family’s love, Joanie’s life ended on July 19, 2022. She was 79. Joanie will be deeply missed by her husband of 54 years, Don; children Bill (Maryann), Mark ( Minta), NaRai (Max); and her cherished grandchildren Sierra, Emilie, Kiara, Isadora, William, Izaiah; her twin brother Karl (Carol); her sister Margaret Ann (Ernie); her sisters-in-law Lorraine and Liz (Kas), Aunt Elsa; as well, many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbours and friends. Joan was predeceased by her mother Martha; her father John; her brother Lorne; and Don and Joan’s son Kyle. Born in Saskatoon in 1942, Joan grew up in Regina, battled and won her fight with polio and graduated high school from Luther College. She achieved her R.N. from the Winnipeg General Hospital. After graduation she enjoyed her responsibility as Head Nurse at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital. Joan also worked at the Portage la Prairie District Hospital in MB, the Richmond Hospital in Richmond, BC, and as a Nurse Practitioner in Mississauga, Ontario. Joan and Don met on a blind date in Winnipeg in 1967 and were married in 1968. Joan was a special person, she was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, grandmother, motherin-law, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend. Her love and care enveloped those around her and she was “mom” to so many, not just her own kids. She was deeply loved and cherished by all of the people in her life. She will be truly missed because Joanie was always willing to help family and friends when they needed help. She was a true caregiver. Joan is remembered for her warmth, her sense of humour and her infectious smile, for her beautiful artistic and fun pieces of landscape art, sports drawings and even a Happy Groundhog Day card. She was an accomplished cook, having studied in France at the La Varenne Cooking School. The family is immensely grateful for the attentive and compassionate care provided by the staff of the Good Samaritan Delta View Care Centre and Delta Hospital, for neighbours and nursing friends, for all friends. A service of remembrance will be held at Tsawwassen United Church, 693, 53 Street, Delta BC., Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. The service will be live streamed at https://www.legacystreaming.com/ arbor-memorial-delta/. Your thoughts and prayers are all the kindness the family requires. Those who so wish, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
PUZZLE ANSWERS ON SEPARATE PAGE
He is survived by his second wife, Virginia and her children: David (Pamela) Diggon, Stuart (Bonnie) Diggon and Anne (Keith) Howlett, as well as his children from his first marriage: Heather (Billy) Sudo, Stephen (Joyce) Murnane, Beth Atherton and Lisa Jabs. He also leaves many grandchildren and great grandchildren, a niece, two nephews and some cousins in Canada, England and Ireland. Cliff attended Laura Secord Elementary School and Britannia High School. On graduation he joined the Canadian Army in the Calgary Highlanders, Communications Division, and saw action in Northern Europe from 1943-1945. He spent another year overseas in the Canadian Army Shows entertaining troops in hospitals and military camps where he played the piano, accordion, and sang and danced with his band.
Miljenko is survived by his wife, Patricia of 53 years; his son Tomas (Janice); his daughter Chanel (Seann) and his grandchildren Max, Luka, Lily and Charlie. He also survived by his sister Mira of Venice, Italy; Slavica of Calgary; and Katica of Vienna, Austria. He is predeceased by his brothers Ivan, Marinko, and Ljubo of Novalja, Croatia.
On his return, he went to U.B.C. where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and worked for Shell Canada for 28 years as accountant, tax consultant and Office Manager. After his retirement from Shell, he was the Executive Director of the Burnaby YMCA for a few years before he became the Administrative Manager for Harper Grey Easton Law Firm. He also spent some time with the Federal Development Bank, and during his last retirement, became a Justice of the Peace, as well as the Administrative Commissioner for the BC Commercial Appeals Commission.
Miljenko spent his childhood and youth in Yugoslavia and served in the Yugoslav Navy for three years. He immigrated to Calgary, Canada in 1967, where he met his wife, Patricia. They then moved to Tsawwassen in 1977 to be closer to the ocean. He raised his family there for 25 years until retirement, when they moved to Parksville until 2019. For the last two and half years of his life, he lived in White Rock.
Cliff was very active in the Burnaby Community and had presiding roles with the Burnaby School Board, BC School Trustees Association, Burnaby Chamber of Commerce, Burnaby Rotary Club, Burnaby YMCA, the Burnaby Boy Scouts and the Junior Achievement Program. He served on the Douglas College Board for 12 years, and was also affiliated with the Vancouver Association of Legal Administrators.
Miljenko worked as a finishing carpenter all his life, and took much pride in all his work. Miljenko loved boating and being on the sea. He was often found working on his boat at the marina if not out somewhere on the Georgia Straight. When not on his boat, he loved watching all sports and seeing his grandchildren play baseball.
Cliff and Virginia lived in West Vancouver for over 25 years, during which time they travelled extensively. Cliff was active in the West Vancouver Seniors Center, especially in the Bridge Program. His last years were spent at their condo in Tsawwassen until, as a result of declining health and dementia, he went to the West Shore Laylum and the Delta View Care Centres. His family is very grateful for the kind, compassionate care and support he received from the staff in both places.
SESTAN, Miljenko (Emile) Miljenko was born in Novalja, Croatia on September 18, 1937, and passed away on July 19, 2022, at the age of 84 years old.
A service will be held at Sacred Heart Parish on July 29th at 10.30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Union Gospel Mission.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Endocrinology Association in his memory would be appreciated. At Cliff’s request, there will be no funeral service, just private family gatherings. Messages, condolences and memories may be sent to the Delta Funeral Home in Ladner.
WILKINSON, Joan Lilian At the wonderful age of 96 Mum passed away after a brief battle with cancer. Missing her amazingly generous and loving spirit are her children Anne-Marie (Blake) Forrest; Graham (Julie) Wilkinson. Her absolute pride and joy were her grandsons Ben, Alex, Adam, Matthew Gromer and Alec Forrest.
