Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Ken Baird passed away on Tuesday (Aug. 2) following a lengthy illness. He was 61.

Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Ken Baird passed away on Tuesday after a courageous and lengthy battle with an illness. A soft-spoken man dedicated to the betterment of his people, Chief Sw ə n n ə s e t passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. He was 61. He was a highly respected and loved Tsawwassen elder and leader, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, the TFN noted in an announcement on Wednesday morning. “Chief Ken was a compassionate, wise, and kind leader who loved his family, the Tsawwassen people, and his culture with all his heart,” the TFN noted. In a statement from the Tsawwassen Government, Baird was described as a kind, compassionate and thoughtful leader. In addition to being a long-time employee in the Public Works Department, Chief Baird served as an elected leader in the Tsawwassen Legislature since 2009, including one term as squiqel (Speaker) of the Legislature from 2013 to 2016. He was elected as Chief in 2019. “Chief Baird’s leadership has helped guide the community through many challenging times over the last three and a half years, and he will be very deeply missed by everyone. Our thoughts and

prayers are with his family at this time,” the TFN said. Delta Mayor George Harvie extend the city’s deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences, saying Baird’s dedication to his people was paramount, and it showed in everything he did for his First Nation. “His knowledge, kindness, and deep passion for the betterment of his people was commendable and the relationship between the City of Delta and Tsawwassen First Nation has been made better by his dedication to reconciliation,” said Harvie. “He will be remembered for his contributions to his community and the friendships he has formed as he charted a path towards a more prosperous Nation,” he added. Baird recently described 2022 National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21) as important to acknowledge injustices of the past, learning about Indigenous neighbours and embracing opportunities for meaningful reconciliation. ”On this day we hold up our hands to honour each of the ancestors who came before us. Their leadership and their resilience through the dark times of colonization forged the path for the Tsawwassen People to be the strong, self-governing First Nation that we are today, and continues to give us strength for our future generations,” Baird said. The TFN noted that details on the funeral service will be announced.

Cyber scams & threats everywhere PHIL MELNYCHUK

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i te r

After hearing details on how to avoid a myriad of offline and online scams and crimes, one attendee summed up the advice. “It’s scary out there. When in doubt, don’t push anything,” said the senior following a Delta police presentation on fraud last week at KinVillage in Tsawwassen. Seniors are targeted for scams because they’re vulnerable, lonely or isolated, too trusting and may have cash saved up from a lifetime of hard work. “You were raised to trust people and believe that people are out to do good things. Unfortunately, that is your biggest downfall, that is you are too trusting,” said Leisa Schaefer, Delta police media relations officer. But younger people are also targeted and also trust too much, such as when agencies hand over information without checking to see if it’s actually police making the request, said Const. Dustin Classen, with Delta police’s cyber crime unit. Police gave safety tips on a raft of scams, some old and some new. Anti-fraud advice that dates from before the online world is still valid. For example, any paper statements or bills with personal info on them should be shredded or destroyed so information doesn’t find its way into a recycling box or dumpster. Also, from the preinternet age, don’t leave your purse or wallet in your car, carry as little identification as possible and check your bank statements regularly. Only about five per cent of scams are reported to police with people often too embarrassed to admit they’ve been cheated.

PHIL MELNYCHUK PHOTO

Delta police media relations officer Leisa Schaefer at last week’s presentation at KinVillage regarding seniors being targeted for cyber crime. But even computer experts can fall victim to crime, he said. One recent trend that is more serious, involves the increase in the number of bitcoin machines, similar to ATMs, that are popping up around town, willing to gobble cash anonymously. “By and large, it’s the victims who are using these machines,” said Classen. Many scams involve aggression, fear and threats, such as arrest or deportation, made over the phone saying only the caller can help them and demanding they talk to no one. Classen even saw a scam in action last year while on patrol and noticed a man and woman looking confused at a bitcoin ATM. The woman was trying to buy a puppy online and was being cheated for cash at each stage of the process, despite being warned it was a scam. The woman even texted the scammers to send her the puppies because she didn’t want to talk to the detectives again. Once people give money the first time, it’s easier for them to

be duped a second time. “Once you start giving, I don’t know what it is, you keep giving,” Classen said. The audience watched a brief video depicting the grandparent scam, which involves the panicked voice of a younger person who’s in a crisis calling grandma or granddad and saying he or she needs cash right away. After the grandchildren reel in the senior, another voice comes on the line with detailed instructions on to deposit the money. Staying safe requires being alert to a myriad of scenarios that could separate someone from their money. Telephone fraud has been around for awhile. If you see a “+1” in front of the 778 prefix, it’s likely a fraud call, Classen added. And once you answer, you’re likely to get more calls later. Fake email or text notices supposedly from banks or the Canada Revenue Agency are common. Clicking on any link, just out of curiosity, can lead to trouble. Pop-up notices supposedly

from Microsoft about web security or updates are also phoney As well, people should be careful about the type of websites they sign up for. If those sites are no longer used, cancel them, Classen added. Spoof websites that purport to be something they’re not should also be avoided as well as strange texts and links that come into your phone. A growing issue is that of sextortion which involves an impersonator asking for revealing photos, only to seek more explicit photos, threatening to shame the victim publicly if they’re not sent. One case of investment fraud in Delta had a resident losing both her home here and in China. She sold both to raise funds for an investment scam. “Right now, she’s not sure where she’s going to be living next month,” Classen said. Never give out your name, date of birth, social insurance number or address, he added. Identification fraud is prevalent, said Schaefer. Mayor gets Metro to holdoff voteon FortisBC plan

SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Will the information that comes from the completed environmental assessment process convince Metro Vancouver that the proposed FortisBC LNG expansion project in Delta is a good one after all? That remains to be seen following the regional district’s board of directors’ decision last Friday (July 29) to vote in favour of a motion put forward by director, and Delta Mayor, George Harvie to defer deciding on the LNG Phase 2 Expansion Project at Tilbury until the combined provincial and federal environmental assessment is done. However, it wasn’t unanimous. The board at its meeting was set to vote on a recommendation from Metro’s Climate Action Committee for the regional district to convey opposition to the FortisBC Tilbury plant expansion, as well as the adjacent Tilbury Marine Jetty Project, because “of overall concerns related to upstream and downstream greenhouse gas emissions and inconsistency with Metro Vancouver climate targets.” The committee last month received a report from staff critical of the projects and voted in favour of recommending to the board that Metro write to the B.C. Minister of Environment

The Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project would increase the facility’s LNG production capacity by more than 50 per cent. and Climate Change Strategy, B.C. Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, B.C. Environmental Assessment Office as well as the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada to communicate opposition. FortisBC, saying the staff report was flawed and left out important facts, also requested a referral so that additional information was gathered. Senior project manager Andrew

Hamilton made a presentation to the board citing several concerns, including the report not providing an accurate assessment of the projects and the role they will play in supporting shared regional and global climate action goals, including decarbonization of the marine sector. Following the presentation and questions, Harvie put forward the deferral motion, saying Delta remains impartial, not making a decision to support or

oppose until a public hearing, and that his city is engaging in the process to gather information. Noting the environmental assessment process is not political, Harvie asked the board to do likewise. “The proposed (FortisBC) project is subject to a thorough, independent and expert review process to determine the potential benefits and impacts they may have. In the case of the Tilbury Marine Jetty, the environmental assessment is nearing completion and reporting out. These are very complex issues which our staff at Delta and Metro and First Nations have engaged in for a number of years, and we need all the necessary information from the EA provides to make an informed decision about these projects. I believe having additional information and study about these projects would be appropriate before making a formal decision,” he said. “I always support the environmental assessment regulatory process. The provincial and federal staff are very qualified and it is a non-political process.” Harvie also noted his council made sure that the environmental assessment was done for the Port of Vancouver’s proposed Terminal 2 expansion before expressing opposition to that project to the federal government.

Ladner housing development gets council’s final approval SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i - d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta council has given final approval for a two-phase, 198-unit non-market housing redevelopment in Ladner. The project for seniors, families and inclusive housing for persons with intellectual disabilities will be located at 4603, 4625 and 4649 Evergreen Lane. It is a development by Affordable Housing Societies and will have rents set at levels affordable for households with low, moderate and middle incomes. This project involves consolidating and redeveloping the properties with the first phase including 130 seniors housing units in a four-storey apartment building on the north portion of the site. There will be 10 units which would be made available for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The second phase includes 68 family housing units in a 48-unit four-storey apartment building and a 20-unit three storey townhouse building on the southern portion of the site. Each phase would contain one

level of under-building parking accessed from Evergreen Lane. According to a Delta staff report two years ago, Affordable Housing Societies has been in operation since 1982 as an owner and manager of rental housing for low and moderate income families, seniors, singles and couples. They represent the largest, private non-profit housing society in Canada providing a range of housing options for residents within Metro Vancouver. For over two years they had been working on a plan for the redevelopment on its properties on Evergreen Lane and funding for the project has been secured through BC Housing’s Community Housing Fund. Prior to making a formal application, Affordable Housing Societies and their consultant engaged in a pre-application review with Delta to refine aspects of the proposal. Although she also voted in favour of granting final approval this week, Coun. Lois Jackson expressed reservations about having so many units “crammed” into one area, saying it makes it difficulty to create a sustainable community. Other council members described it as a fantastic project.

Thomas Haydon’s family, lifelong friends and former teammates are making sure he will be a big part of the new Ladner Outdoor Multi-Sport Court. The impressive $2.1 million city venue, adjacent to the Ladner Leisure Centre, provides a roof and lighting over the existing lacrosse box for yearround play. It’s already become the envy of many lacrosse associations across the country. Haydon was a lifetime Ladner resident and Delta firefighter who lost a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2018 at the age of 36, leaving behind his young family. He was also a big part of the lacrosse community as a player and a coach. In his honour, the Thomas Haydon Memorial Game and Award was launched in 2019. The fundraiser is typically held

in early June where his former teammates and friends get together for a fun game and social before presenting the award to a member of the Delta Junior “A” Islanders. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, this year’s Thomas Haydon day took place on June 11. “The THMA event was a success. The organizers appreciate all the volunteers and communitymembers that supported the event. A little over $22,000 was raised and will be donated in its entirety towards a scoreboard in the newly renovatedoutdoor lacrosse box,” said the alumni group in a prepared statement. During last Monday’s regular council meeting, the donation was endorsed by the City of Delta which has agreed to provide mounts and power for the 12x8 foot scoreboard and shot clocks. Both have a life expectancy of around 30 years.

‘Awful’ hole in Ladner Village to be finally developed SANDOR GYARMATI

GOT SSTUFF? NEED LLOCAL STORAGE?

sgyarmati@delta- optimist .com

A vacant lot in Ladner Village could finally be redeveloped following council’s preliminary approval last week to alter what had originally been approved for the site. A zoning amendment and a development permit for a mixed-use commercial/residential building was approved for the combined properties 4868 and 4872 Delta St., but this time for an increase in storey height and a reduction in strata lot area. The application will be discussed at a public hearing on Monday (Aug. 8). Council in 2019 had previously given final approval for a redevelopment that would see a two-and-a-half-storey mixed use building. An existing heritage building would be torn down while lot next door was already empty. The new building would have seen commercial uses on the first floor and four residential units above At the time, it was over two years since council gave conditional approval but the site had since changed owners. New ownership would take over last fall and they made an application to amend the previous approval.

The Delta Street site has been vacant for years but changes to Ladner Village’s OCP paves the way to finally see development occur. The new proposal was for a three-storey mixeduse building with retail commercial use on the ground level and four residential units above. The changes will not only result in an increase in storey height, but also a reduction of commercial area and an increase of residential area, while the total floor area would increase slightly. The living units will vary in size while the overall design of the building will remain similar to what had been approved previously. The three-storey building would be compatible with other buildings along Delta Street, according to the planning department. Noting the site has been under multiple ownerships that found it wasn’t viable to build what had been

approved, Coun. Dylan Kruger said he is keen to see the empty hole in the village filled. Mayor George Harvie agreed, describing the empty space as “awful on our main street there”. Although she voted in favour as well, Coun. Lois Jackson expressed concern, saying “I’d like to retain the flavour of the history Ladner and I’m not sure this quite hits the mark.” The Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee was told the site remained vacant because it simply wasn’t economically viable to redevelop. In late 2021, council voted in favour of Ladner Village Official Community Plan amendments aimed at revitalizing the village and waterfront.

Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES

T

he Tsawwassen First Nation has lost a respected leader. On Tuesday night, surrounded by his loving family, Chief Swənnəset Ken Baird passed away peacefully. In a post on their Facebook page, the TFN said, “Chief Ken was a compassionate, wise, and kind leader who loved his family, the Tsawwassen people, and his culture with all his heart.” The TFN said details regarding a funeral service would be announced soon. Baird was elected Chief of the TFN in April 2019. In a statement to the Optimist prior to the 2019 election, Baird said, “I believe our priorities should be our youth and elders. I am mature and have a lot of experience and think I could really help our community move forward. I have proven to be honest, reliable and dependable...The role of chief is a serious job and I am up for the task.” Baird certainly backed up those words and then some. He was a champion for the communities’ youth and that was spotlighted in February 2021, when the TFN opened up their new youth centre. “Our young people are our future. They needed a place where they felt welcomed and valued,” said Baird during the opening ceremony. In the last two years Baird has commented in a couple of columns in the Optimist about the importance of Truth and Reconciliation saying that although the road is long, “we are moving forward with hope and pride in our hearts.” That speaks to Baird’s immense respect for the community as a whole and of the work that has been done and the work that we all have to continue to do. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the Baird family and the Tsawwassen First Nation on this tremendous loss. Know that you are all in our hearts and prayers in this difficult time. Rest in peace Chief Swənnəset .

Another year older means another year older

W

e’ve been talking about demographics in my marketing class lately, specifically about age. If there is one truth about age that cannot be disputed, it’s this: next year, I can guarantee you without a shred of doubt… … you will be one year older than you are today. No matter how much you try and fight it. Oh, sure, I try and make myself feel better by saying ‘another year older, another year wiser’, but who am I kidding. The grey in my goatee tells me a different story. I should shave the thing off. I decided to launch my own personal fight against aging – I went for a run. I haven’t run for a couple years, although I do lots of other exercise that somewhat keeps me in shape. During the pandemic I managed to injure my back playing softball, so that summer was out. Last year I was pretty busy and didn’t motivate myself enough.

Community Comment BRAD SHERWIN

This year the weather was so lousy for so long it took a while to find my jogging shoes. Darn, I found them. They look new. So on a sunny Sunday morning of the B.C. Day weekend, I was trotting through Centennial Beach Park, stopping to walk a bit along the way to catch my breath. It was a beautiful day, the families were arriving at the park to claim their piece of beach, the kids running around the playground. What a great way to start the day! I remembered how much I enjoy jogging. I don’t take

music, I let my mind wander and look for solutions to issues I am dealing with or ideas for my clients. I do my best thinking while I’m running. That’s where I came up with this article, as I have done many times in the past. Besides, thinking about that takes my mind away from the pain in my legs. As I finish, all I can think of is getting out again. To enjoy the fresh air of the early morning, the quiet before a busy day. I can’t wait. Until I get up Monday morning and my legs are a little sore. Like, having trouble walking down a flight of stairs sore. Maybe I’ll try again next weekend. Besides, my birthday isn’t until March. I’ve got lots of time. Brad Sherwin, MBA is a long-time resident of South Delta, and has over 30 years experience in marketing, public relations and business strategy. Editor: The inability of Delta Parks & Recreation to cut the grass short enough and to not pick up the clippings in the Tsawwassen Village Park, has allowed swarms of mosquitos to invade this area. Mosquitos love to hide in long grass and grass clippings, making it a very unpleasant place to visit. Normally the park is well used by all ages in the community however, families have had to pack up and cancel birthday parties and gatherings, children do not want to play or parents to sit and watch them due to the infestation.

Last week two concerned local residents, used their own time and lawn mowers to clean the park up, cutting the grass to a reasonable level and removing all the old clippings. They did this after a number of attempts to get some action from Parks & Rec. staff to resolve the problem, with no success. Thank you to my neighbors for giving up your time and equipment for the benefit of all park users. However as taxpayers should we not expect Parks & Recreation to maintain the park to a standard whereby it can be used by all. Richard Turner

Plastic bag ban actually does little to help the planet Editor: I take exception to the provincial and municipal mandates to rule out plastic shopping bags and reintroduce paper bags, at a price that does not get collected by the governments for use in the fight for the climate. It seems we have forgotten that we went to plastic bags to save trees. And while we ban plastic bags, (now we have to buy them to line our garbage bins) we banned styrofoam containers, so restaurants and delis etc are now

using plastic containers. Our reliance on oil will not subside... we went from glass juice, milk, pop bottles etc to plastic bottles. Our clothes, bedding, upholstery, carpets etc are mostly synthetic, ie plastic or oil based. The interiors of our cars, even electric, are plastic based. Our paints and enamels etc are oil based products. This ban on plastic bags is ridiculous and does little to nothing to help the planet when considering the whole. Nicki Marshall

Frequent Ladner visitor is always happy to see the decorated Heron

Editor: I meant to write this when the heron decorator’s letter to the editor posted, but was sidetracked. Then I read Andrew Maclaren’s letter and writing shot to the top of my to-do list. First off, I don’t know if the vandalism to the heron on Canada Day was a deliberate act as a protest or whether it was a drunken fool with no life or just someone with an issue. I do know that you can live in worse countries than Canada and then you’ll be wishing you could move here. We should celebrate Canada Day warts and all. I don’t live in Ladner but we drive to Ladner almost every weekend. The heron is the first thing we deliberately

look for when we cross the highway. We love to see him - from the festive happy new year hat and horn, to the orange shirt for First Nations, to my favourite the scarf and drippy nose when it was -20 out this past winter. So, to the heron decorator - we love you and don’t let one fool bring you down and stop you. I have often wondered who dresses the heron and wanted to express my appreciation for a job well done. By dressing the heron, you immediately convey a message of warmth, humour and welcome to Ladner. Ladner should be grateful and supportive of all your effort. After all, you make a great first impression. Julie A.

Man convicted of Tsawwassen murders is again denied full parole SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r t m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

One of three men convicted in a gruesome double homicide in Tsawwassen three decades ago has again been denied full parole. In a recent decision released by the Parole Board of Canada, Derek Lord will instead see his day parole extended for another six months. His day parole has several conditions including not travelling to Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland. A case management team also recommended extended leave privileges for 14 days out of a community residential facility to be spent in a family home and two days in the community residential facility. Lord and friend David Muir were hired by Darren Huenemann to kill his mother and grandmother, Sharon Huenemann and Doris Leatherbarrow, so he could get a multi-million dollar inheritance. The three teens lived in Saanich at the time of the murder and at trial the prosecution argued that on Oct. 5, 1990, Huenemann and his girlfriend dropped Lord and Muir off at the ferry terminal. The pair then went to Leatherbarrow’s Tsawwassen home

and, after being invited in for dinner by the two women, bludgeoned and stabbed them to death. The two teens then took the ferry home and were picked up by Huenemann and his girlfriend. All three were convicted in 1992. Lord, now 49, and Muir were both sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years. Huenemann received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years After his conviction, Muir, who pleaded not guilty at trial, admitted his role in the murders and has been out on parole for years. He was granted day parole in April 2002 and full parole a year later. The board granted Lord day parole in March 2020 and that has been continued at six-month intervals since that time. Lord also continues to claim he is innocent, something noted by the parole board. His continued conditions include having no direct or indirect contact with the victims’ families including extended family members. The board noted the condition was imposed to protect the victims who continue to tell the board how harmful it would be to have unwanted contact with him.

Thanks to the annual Beach Grove Golf Club Ladies Tournament, 50 local children will have the opportunity to play an organized sport this fall.

Beach Grove Ladies Golf Tournament donates $15,000 to Delta KidSport An additional 50 Delta children will have the financial ability to play a registered sport this fall thanks to a huge donation from the annual Beach Grove Golf Club Ladies Tournament. This year’s fundraiser event raised $15,000 for KidSport Delta — the organization that provides annual grants to help local families with the financial barrier of putting their children into organized sports. “The women membership of Beach Grove Golf

Club has a long-standing tradition to hold a member and guest event with the goal of raising needed funds for a local charity and community groups. “We were so pleased to be their charity of choice for this year’s tournament,” said KidSport Delta chair Carlene Lewall. “Support from members and event sponsors was gratifying but not surprising as the club has a long history of contributing to the

Tsawwassen community,” added Michelle Mason, chair of the tournament. KidSport Delta is pleased to see the full return of the participation in sport after these two seasons of restrictions. Since January, KidSport Delta has given 106 children the opportunity to play sport by providing over $30,000 in grants. This would not be possible without the generous donations from individuals, sponsors and organizations such as the Beach Grove Golf Club. $

“Sport gives children so much more than physical activity and just playing the game. The life skills of teamwork, dedication, time management, sportsmanship and meeting new friends are some of the many benefits. KidSport Delta is pleased to be able to take away the financial barrier to all children have the opportunity to participate,” added Lewall. To make a donation, please go to the KidSport website kidsport.ca/ british-columbia/delta or email kidsportdelta@ gmail.com.

Delta Music Makers off to England & France

After some two years of a COVID necessitated hiatus, Delta Music Makers (DMM) are about to depart on a 16-day European Tour. The 40-member group leave on Aug. 8 and will entertain crowds in Anderton/ Northwich, Chester, Falmouth, and Beckenham; all in England. Then, in honour of the Canadian heroes of WWI and WWII, memorial concerts wil follow in Arras, France (near Vimy Ridge), and the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France. Curt Jantzen, who founded DMM some 39 years ago, and still active as senior conductor, talked about how the members’ love and commitment to music kept the band together over the past two years. “This tour was originally scheduled for 2020, but, due to COVID, was deferred for a year. Then, in late spring ‘21, deferred again! Throughout all this time, our group has held fast to the opportunity of taking this tour,” Janzen explained. “All costs of the tours are borne by the members themselves, but we enjoy play-

ing and sharing music in exotic locations – it gives meaning to our travels.” Starting again this spring, DMM has been re-entertaining the people of Delta. Two notable concerts were at Kin Village and at the 16th Ladner Bandfest, which was organized and co-ordinated by DMM at Memorial Park. While the band’s primary reason for touring is to share their love of music with the audiences, they also plan to be goodwill ambassadors for the City of Delta. The mayors and other dignitaries in all six European venues have been invited, and will be presented with Mayor George Harvie’s compliments. And, there is little doubt that, in his usual inimitable style, Jantzen will be extolling the wonders of his hometown. The Delta Music Makers Concert Band is a community band based in Delta. This group of musician plays varied material from solemn to lighthearted, from songs of remembrance to movie music to folk music to famous marches. -Submitted

The Old Testament & Christian Faith Some modern believers in Jesus have distanced themselves from what Christians call the Old Testament. As a pastor I have heard more than one person say that while the New Testament is all about God’s love, the Old Testament is a book of wrath. Well, this isn’t true—God’s love and wrath are present in both books. Some theologians have even argued that the Old Testament is entirely irrelevant for Christians. This isn’t true either. The Old Testament is actually as important as the New Testament; for the two are intimately connected. You will understand very little of the second book if you are unacquainted with the first. A quick and easy way to understand the Old Testament for Christians is as the lead up story to Jesus’ entrance into the world—and an exciting

story it is! Perhaps one way of thinking about it—to borrow a phrase from the entertainment industry— is as the “origin” story explaining why Jesus came into the world. He was the Messiah, the ultimate king and deliverer promised to the Jewish people, who would bring ultimate peace and justice into the world. In the Old Testament we read about the promise God made to

the Israelites that would be fulfilled in Christ. While, there are certainly aspects that do not directly apply to our lives today, in the pages of the Old Testament we see how God worked through the people of Israel to bring redemption to the world. Another important reason that Christians should not disregard the Old Testament is because of the high value Jesus placed upon it. If our Lord upheld the ancient scriptures, who are we to disregard them? Jesus makes very clear that he did not come to destroy the law and the prophets, but to fulfill (Mathew 5: 17). Therefore we who claim Christ as Lord should strive to learn as much as we can about the Hebrew Scriptures. The benefit is a better understanding of the New Testament. As we increase our knowledge base, our lives as followers of Jesus will be enriched.

MountiesspoilLadner’shometownparty Vancouver hand host Red Sox only loss in final to win B.C. Minor’s provincial 18U AA title MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A pair of season-long friendly rivals clashed one last time with a provincial banner and a trip to the Western Canadian Championships on the line. The Vancouver Community Mounties spoiled the party for the host Ladner Red Sox — capturing B.C. Minor Baseball’s 18U AA provincial title with a 6-3 victory on a sweltering Sunday afternoon at Cromie Park. The Red Sox entered the championship game looking to complete the “triple” after earlier capturing the spring season with a 13-1-1 record, then going 11-1-0 in the provincial regional playdowns. The roll continued on their home diamond with four convincing victories to lock-

down the No. 1 seed and a trip directly to the gold medal game. That run included an 11-1 win over the Mounties on Saturday afternoon in a battle between 3-0 teams. The result meant Vancouver needed to play an additional playoff game Sunday morning against No. 3 seed Tsawwassen to earn another crack at Ladner. They came through with a 13-5 win and had plenty of bullets still in their holster for the final. After limiting the use of their pitching staff against Ladner a day earlier, the Mounties went with their top tandem of Jaron Palaschuk and Ben Black. Vancouver jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and it stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when Ladner finally broke through against Palaschuk to score twice.

MARK BOOTH PHOTO

Ladner scored twice in the fourth to briefly tie Sunday’s B.C. Minor Baseball’s 18U AA provincial final at Cromie Park before the Vancouver Mounties pulled away for a 6-3 victory.

MARK BOOTH PHOTO

Ladner Red Sox’s Michael Norcott was dominant on the mound and at the plate.

The game was only briefly tied as the Mounties added two more in the fifth then a couple of insurance runs in the seventh. That was plenty enough for Black who came on in relief to surrender a single run in the seventh but was dominant otherwise to secure the Golden Glove Award as the tournament’s top pitcher. Vancouver now prepares to head to Estevan later this month for the Western Canadian Championships. There’s a good chance some Ladner players will be joining them as part of the required pick-ups to expand the roster

for the extended schedule. Among them should be Ladner’s Michael Norcott who was not only terrific on the mound but earned the tournament’s Silver Slugger Award as the top hitter. Player of the game awards for Ladner against the following opponents included: Casey Cartlidge (Tsawwassen), Tye Hemenway (Vernon), Max Kidds-Brodie (Vancouver Minor), Norcott (Vancouver Community) and Daniel Shorman (Vancouver Community). The Red Sox roster also featured: Tyler Allan, Arjun

Chahal, Ryan Carleton, Layne Edge, Declan Speiran, Quincy Chong, Josh Robie, Ben Lakeland, Logan Lechner and Jaren Yamaoka. Tsawwassen’s fine season ended with the semi-final loss but Athletics showed their resiliency, bouncing back from a couple of lopsided losses to open the tournament to reach the playoffs. Player of the game awards included: Ryan Milner (Ladner), Brady Stoilen (Vancouver Community), Brody Kenward (Vancouver Minor), Ritchie Pratt (Vernon) and Evan Rusticus (Vancouver Minor).

Sports McLeods leadDolphins’ provincials medal haul

Small in numbers and big on talent. That sums up the Winskill Dolphins’ performance at the recent Swim B.C. Summer Provincial Championships at UBC where six members of the South Delta club combined to win a whopping 18 medals. The Dolphins were led by Zach and Abby McLeod with the brother and sister duo coming through with 11 medals. Zach’s six medals included gold in the 200m butterfly and 1500m freestyle. Abby captured gold in the 800m and 1500m free-

style races. Kelly Qi collected four medals before her meet was cut short due to illness. Jeremy Slinn won bronze in the 200 back and Naomi Mynott took silver in the 800 free. The weekend wrapped up with the Open Water Swim at Albert Dyck Lake in Abbotsford where Caitlyn Flower won the 2km race. Qi is currently with Team B.C. at the Canada Summer Games while Zach McLeod will be competing at the Junior World Open Water Championships, slated for Sept. 16 to 18 in Seychelles, Africa.

Brian Elsey and Harry Ratchford were our Realtors for our first home purchase last year. We felt as though they continually went above and beyond in advocating for us in an incredibly competitive market. They were both enthusiastic and empathetic, recognizing that this was a sometimes overwhelming process. We really appreciated their patience in educating us in the real estate process, both from a buying, selling and investment standpoint. We are so happy with our new home, and feel confident that it is a great place for us now and will remain a great investment in the future. We were so grateful to them for being so honest and pro-active about our options throughout our search. Their referral network also took huge pressure off of us, as I did not have to research into mortgage brokers or inspectors, saving us time and stress when it really counted - Brian and Harry have taken care of us every step of the way. Thank you Brian and Harry!! We highly recommend the services Brian and Harry . We were in search of condo in Tsawwassen with some urgency. The service and support provided to us was excellent . They provided a complete package of documents regarding the condominium including general information for first time owners of a condominium . All our expectations were met . They also assisted us in our downsizing process from our family home of 25 years to a condo . Brian and Harry successfully assisted our daughter and her family in purchasing a home in Tsawwassen as well.

Ken Davie As a young man, Ken Davie was interested in agriculture. When working at his family farm on Arthur Drive, his cow won the world championship for milk production. His next accomplishment was winning the Spencer Cup for the best plowing with a team of horses for the under 18 age group. After high school dad enrolled in the agriculture program at UBC. His next adventure was accompanying two boat loads of cattle to Shanghai. On returning he travelled to the Peace River to learn different farming techniques. On Returning home to the Delta he rented then purchased the farm in East Delta. His other accomplishments were winning the sheep dog trials, the best horse at the PNE, to growing of the world’s championship red clover in 1957. During this time he managed to serve several terms as President of the Farmers Institute. Along the way he also belonged to the IDOF. He developed a love of harness racing as an owner, driver and spectator. He was a lifetime member of the Delta Agriculture Society. Our dad was most proud of his family and how many young people came to him for advice. His ability to have friends from all ages and all walks of life was incredible.

Anne “Annie” LeMoignan

We lost our amazing mother suddenly on Sunday, July 24, 2022. Though unexpected, Mom couldn’t have planned it better; her family was with her enjoying the evening at our Point Roberts property, what our parents always called their “Little Slice Of Heaven”. Mom was the youngest child of four, born in Westlock, Alberta. She spent her childhood helping out on the family farm and learning the value of a hard day’s work. Mom was a constant companion to her mother, our grandmother, who did not speak English. Mom helped by translating when they went shopping and paid bills. From her mother, Mom learned skills like sewing, cooking and preserving. She said Grandma was always able to make and fix anything. The family sold the farm and moved to Edmonton, Alberta in the early 1950s. Mom told stories of playing with her older sister Helen’s make up and accessories. Helen was a second mother to our mom, and would bring her presents of clothes and fabric. Mom made many of her own clothes and was considered one of the best dressed kids in school. When she reached her teenage years, she decided to leave high school and pursue a career in the beauty industry. She enrolled in beauty school and excelled. When she was fifteen, Mom met the “love of her life”, Bob LeMoignan at the drive-in. She said Dad was a well-dressed, handsome guy whose charm and charisma swept Mom off her feet. They were married two years later and went on to have three kids and build many businesses together including several beauty salons, a wholesale wig business and auto rentals. Mom always loved doing hair and formed many close friendships with clients. Through good times and bad times, she was always a dependable and loyal partner to Dad and supported him in his many business ventures. Never one to back away from a challenge, Mom decided to go out on her own, having a long and successful career with Canada Safeway. Mom happily retired in 2012 and continued indulging her interests in art and family history (we’ll miss her humorous handmade cards and cherish our family scrapbooks). She was always trying new recipes and loved trains and tugboats, watching the wildlife behind their home, volunteering her time for animal rescue, and taking care of her flowers. Mom and Dad had a lot of fun together over the years, hitting the casinos, pulling tabs at their favorite watering holes, and taking the dogs “to run” at our Point Bob property. They hosted parties and BBQs and vacationed in Penticton where they enjoyed playing slots and taking the dogs to the lake. When Dad passed away in 2018, he took a big piece of Mom with him.

In loving memory of our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend,

Patricia Joy Currie, nee Garrett January 24th, 1928 - May 15th, 2021 Come celebrate the life of Joy Currie - a cherished part of our family and a friend to many. Hosted by John & Sandy Currie, Rob Currie & Ronnie Skolnick, and Barb & Kim Koebel. Location: The Rose and Crown Pub 1203 56 St, Delta, BC V4L 2M4 Tsawwassen, BC Time:

1:00pm, September 10th, 2022

Lunch will be served. All ages welcome. Please bring any pictures or memorabilia of Joy that you would like to share. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice in Joy’s name would be appreciated. We hope to see you there

Together, Mom and Dad built a successful and prosperous life based on hard work and determination. Mom was the best mother anyone could ask for. She loved us, taught us, and offered advice when we asked for it, never pushed her views on us, and respected us all as individuals. Mom is reunited with Dad and everyone else who passed before her, and we are so very happy for her though we miss her terribly. Her love and support for her children and grandchildren, nieces and friends will never be replaced or forgotten. Woo hoo Mom! We love you and will see you again! In lieu of flowers, our family would appreciate donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation, PB&Chi Dog Rescue Society or Vancouver Rabbit Rescue.
