Narima and Muhammad arrived in Canada in 2016, one of the families sponsored by the Canadian government’sSyrianrefugee program. Twoother families also settled in Delta at that time However,Narima’s brother hasbeen stuck in Syriasince 2011 and unable to workinhis profession. An application will be made based on family reunification. Desnoyers is confidentthe application to immigrateasrefugees will be approved. In order to file the application, the Refugee Action Group, along with the family living here, must first raise $37,000, which will be enough to cover the family’sexpenses for ayear as they settle andlearn English. Desnoyers though said the goal is to raise $50,000 in order to adequately supportthe family. Some money has already been raised, but thegroup is trying to raise the balance in order to be able to file the application. “Wejust need to have the money to send it in,” she said. Joan Sherry, 77, died at about 9:45 p.m. on Oct 1, 2021. Her 2019 Nissan Sentra struck the BC Frozen Foods-owned combine in the area of Highway 17A and Ladner Trunk Road. It was operated by Jasdeep Singh Sandhu, Delta Police Department records obtained by son Norm Sherry show. Those records said the combine should not have been on the road, its operators disobeying at least two provincial regulations
The records said after the investigation was complete, criminal charges were not appropriate and no criminal charge recommendation was forwarded to Crown prosecutors. Norm wants to know why that decision was made and what merits charges in such a case “Do you have to kill two people? Does it have to be a family with young children?” he asked. “Something just doesn’t add up.”
Anotherreportsaid therewas “clear undisputable evidence that BC Frozen Foods weredisobeying several motor vehicle regulations and Commercial TransportAct regulations.” Const.Andrew St.Arnaud’s reportcalled the case a“tragedy.”
Getting the records Norm said it took an order from B.C.’sOffice of the Information and Privacy Commissioner to get the records released. He said police initially told him only his mother or BC Frozen Foods could request the records. That lefthim shocked. “I said,‘Well, she’s been killed. Youknowthat right?’”
When the records were released, they wereheavily redacted. “They foughtuseverystep of the way,”hesaid of Delta Police “Wejust also wanttopreventa family from having to go through this again.”
DPD Insp Heath Newton said the evidence collected in the investigation did not meet charge approval standards under the Criminal Code and that other enforcementaction was taken. He said enforcementaction included an order for the vehicle to be inspected for safety defects and repairs beforeitcould move again, aviolationticket to the driver fornot having rear lights, aviolation ticket for failing to display flags on an oversized vehicle and a violation ticket for failing to properly equip a vehicle.
Norm said the family hasconsidered starting acivil lawsuit. “It’snot about the money,”he said. “It’sabout accountability.” PHOTO

Sherry was fatally injured and died at the scene despite medicalattempts to assist her. Police spoke to witnesses who said theytoo hadpassedthe vehicle on the same stretch of road and that the harvester was hard to see An April19DPD reportsaid the collision investigator’s opinion was that the collision was a result of “BC Frozen Foods failing to maintain the farmvehicle, properly training staff, oreven having the knowledge themselves to safely transporta farm vehicleonahighway.”

“As this matter is still ahead of the courts, we cannot comment any further,” said Newton. BC Frozen Foods did not respond to Glacier Media’s request for comment.
Police reports
The police report said the machine was operating at night, moving about 30 km/h and had no lighting or flagging on it Sherry had been travelling about 90 km/h, the speed limit There were no streetlights “Sherry did not observe the farm vehicle due to the lack of rear lighting and collided with the farm vehicle forcing a por tion of the Nissan under the farm vehicle,” the police report said. It said Sherry, a Yellow Cabgraveyard shift dispatcher, drove into the back of the combine without braking or manoeuvring to avoid a collision. The Nissan crumpled beneath the machine, its top completely destroyed. The combine sustained little damage outside a bent rim and flat tire. Sandhu immediately stopped, checked on the Nissan and called 911. Police said the lights on the harvester’s front were working and that the rear ones were plugged in. They were unable to determine at the scene if the lights hadbeen operational at the time of the impact.Aflashing lamp was disconnected. “The farmvehicle was in no condition to be on the road,”a reportsaid, later noting it was not in compliance with B.C motor vehicle regulations.“A driver approaching the vehicle would find it difficult to observe the hazardonthe roadway.”

Unless you have hada knockonyour door from acandidate on the Achieving for Delta team in the past few weeks, you likely have no idea that we areinfact in election season. It’s been really quiet so far The municipal election is set for Saturday, Oct.15, but unless afew morepeople step up to announce their candidacy, therewill be little choice for voters hereinDelta As it stands now, Mayor George Harvie would be acclaimed for asec ond terminthe mayor’s chair, while councillors Alicia Guichon and Dylan Kruger would also be acclaimed and serve their second term. Both arepart of Harvie’s Achievingfor Delta team With four current councillors previously saying they would not be running –Lois Jackson, Jeannie Kanakos,Bruce McDonald and Dan Copeland, that leavesfour open council seats, which at this pointwould go to Achieving for Delta candidatesDaniel Boisvert, Jessie Dosanjh (both current school trustees) as well as Rod Binder and Jennifer Johal. Therewill be some change for sureon the school boardasnew Achieving for Delta candidatesNimmiDaula,Ammen Dhillon, Masako Gooch,MaryKask and JoeMuego arerunning alongside incumbents ValWindsor and Erica Beard. Incumbents Bruce Reid and Nick Kanakos arerunning together and seeking re-election with LauraDixon announcing she will not be running. Ihavetoadmit I’mpretty shocked to see the lack of interest in the elec tion. We had48candidates in 2018 for council and school board. So whyis theresomuch apathythis time around? It would be good to see some more names, moreideas and differentper spectives come forward. The nomination period begins on Aug. 30 and ends on Sept.9,sothat still gives us three weeks to see if interest grows. If it doesn’t,then election night will be one of the quietest in history. Sahota trains about 24 hours a week, just competed last weekend and this weekend he’s at another meet in Toronto. The goal is to keep training and competing in dozens of events in order to climb up the rankings and secureaspot on Team Canada for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. “It’sa huge process,” saidSahota, who’s previously competed for Canada at the PanAmerican Games Parryisnow competing recreationally at the master’s level and loves Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
“Itwas neck and neck. He could have got the gold,”Sahota said. “I think alot of people werelooking forwardto the games and when they got postponed, it just made it that much morespecial.” While he’s got gold, Sahota isn’t slowing down because he wants Olympic gold.
Parrynarrowlymissedgold in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, after his competition wentintoovertime against atough competitor from Spain.
The sportnow hasmorethanjust an indirect connection with lawenforcementwhich often requires having to control clients or suspects Delta, along with Port Moody, New Westminster,West Vancouverand TransLink noware all providing their officers with some training in modified jiu-jitsu. That reflects amovement in policing towards leveraged-based control (using armlocks or holds) and away from strikes as alast resortfor controlling suspects, said Parry, who’s one of the training officers. That approach is less violentand less likely to lead to escalation. Astudy in the U.S. hasshown that police who have some training in jiujitsu have fewer injuries to themselves, fewer injuries to their subjects and fewer complaints from the public about use of excessive force, headded. “Ithelps keep them safe,” Parrysaid. The training also improves confidence among officers, who arethen better able to control themselves in stressful situations, hesaid.
Sahota claimed gold in the heavyweightcategoryinboth freestyle and Greco-Romanwrestling. Sahota also won gold when the games werelast held in 2019 in China.
Police, firefighters,CBSA officers, and officers from 70 countries compete The games allowworkers who face danger and stress daily achance to socialize and decompress “They werefantastic,”said Sahota. “I think they hadover10,000 athletes competing. They wereverywell organized and they weresuper fun. “Itisveryrefreshing. It’s nice to see good peoplefromall aroundthe world come together.”
DPD officers scoop up gold and silver at World Police and Fire Games
“It’sverymuchamental game. It’s arealchallenge mentally whether it’s learning it or competing,” he said, adding jiu-jitsu hasbeen tested and proven both competitively and in the area of lawenforcement. “Learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu, in my opinion, is like having a super power.It’sincredible.I love it.”

This can strike achord with many of us as it seemsthat all we have been doing over the past three years is to do exactly that, interpretthe presenttimes.Wehave spentmany agonizing months and shifting and adjusting as we continue to learn howtolive with COVID-19, Monkey Pox and any number of other factors just beyond our control. All this, while the challenges of our country andworld that werewith pre-2020 continue to dominateour society and global community. Issues like clean, fresh water to all, access to health careand appropriatetreatmentofailments, safeguards, and resources for the vulnerably housed and far too many people who arehungry andalone. These are amongthe many issues that we continue, sometimes in vain, to interpret in our time. The challenge is we quickly find ourselves overwhelmed with the issues of the daythat way heavily on our hearts. But when we consider these words from Jesus some more and place them in context of aChristian life and what it means to be a partofthe Body of Christ, we realize that we in fact belong to acommunity of people who all in their ways, alongwithours, work towards not only interpreting the present times, but worktowards implementing effective strategies and programs to meet the real needs of ahurtand broken world. It is in this context that we learn to let go,and let die, thoseaspects of the self that hold us back from being fully alive in Christ and the beloved People of Godweare called to be Theburdens of the world arenot ours alone to carry, but rather, they arethe burdens we share with aglobal community in working to make the world abetter place

Backpacks arehandy resources, but overstuffed backpacks maycause injury.Backpacks should only carry weight that people can handle, and thereare guidelines that can help people safely utilizebackpacks The weightofabackpack depends on theage of theperson using it.Generally speaking, adults should not exceed 20 percentoftotal body mass when loadingbackpacks.Thatmeansa healthy person weighing 200 pounds should not carry morethan40pounds in his or her backpack. In regard to children, researchers indicate that achild’s backpack should weighnomorethan10percent of what the studentweighs. Those findings arebased on aSpanishstudy involv ing 49 primaryschool-aged children. Therefore, if achild weighs 70 pounds, he or she should only carry up to seven poundsinthe backpack. Individuals also should followafew other backpack recommendationsto alleviate injuries. It’snot agood idea to wear abackpack hanging from only one shoulder.A backpack shouldbeworn on both shoulders, and ideally with a lumbar strap. This will help to prevent muscular pains by providing wellrounded support. Abackpack with wide, padded straps can minimize pressureonthe shoulders, back and collarbone.Backpacks made of lightweightmaterial will not add much additional weighttowhat’s being carried. Another tip is for children and adults to pack the heaviest item carried in the backpack closest to the centreofthe back to minimize strain. Mornings, especially in households in which parents who workoutside of the home and have one or two kids requir ing drop-off at their respective schools, can often be hectic. Starting off the morning feeling harried and stressed can carry over into the mood of the day, affecting productivity as aresult If less stressful mornings areagoal for your family, trythese strategies: Start the night before Doing as much preparatoryworkthe evening beforecan make quite adiffer ence in taming hectic mornings.Things that can be done in advance include checking andstocking backpacks, signingpaperwork, making lunches, setting out clothing, showering, and having breakfast foods ready to go Establish a‘launch pad’ Have alaunch pad, or aplace where all school-relateditems areprepped and stored. It can be abasket, box or another container big enough to contain school items.Children can drop and pick up the items as needed. Make the routine the boss Positive Parenting Solutions founder AmyMcCready says families can implementa ‘when-then’ routine that sets the tone for the morning. “When everyone is dressed, hair combed, breakfast eaten, and school supplies packed, then youcan watch 10 minutes of an educational cartoon.”This puts the routine in control rather than making the parents thebad guys. Make kids responsible Toooften parents add morestress to their platesbyshowing up at school with forgotten lunch boxes or band instruments.Instead, parents can stop rescuing their children and help train them to be moreresponsible -anessential trait. Chart wake-up times It mayseem like micromanaging, but scheduling wake-up and bathroom times can help everyone knowwhere they should be and when they should be there. It also helps avoid bottleneck situations in the bathroom or kitchen. Keep morning madness to aminimumwith some simple strategies -MetroCreative hectic school

During 2021/22, the Delta Farmland &Wildlife Trust partnered with local farmers to plant3,938 acres of winter cover crops and 90 acres of grassland set asides, inaddition to 350 acres of already existing set-aside fields throughout Delta and Richmond. We completed surveys throughout the winter and spring to assess the impact of stewardship programs and found that they continue to provide benefits to wildlife and farmers. Delta is considered atop migratory birdsite, with approximately five million migratorybirds utilizing the Fraser River estuaryasawintering habitat. Cover crop fields provide foraging material for Snow Geese and other migratorywater fowl. By March2022, 22 per centoffields werecompletely grazed, while 43 per centoffields wereleft without any signs of grazing. Less grazing was observed this year compared to last year, where most fields weregrazed entirely (60 per cent), and only 16 per centoffields were not grazed. This was likely due to the series of cold snaps between December 2021 andFebruary2022, which damaged many cover crops.Wefound that fields planted with winter cereals, such as fall rye, could handle the cold better and weregrazed more; spring cereals, such as barley and oats, wereless resilientto the cold and werehighly damaged by the endofthe season Buteven in cold weather conditions, cover crops continue to provide the same benefits to farmers -such as enhancing soil health, and protecting against erosion. In addition to cover crop surveys, which looked at howfields aregrazed through the winter, wecompleted water fowl surveys to identify which species are using these fields The most common species observed in Delta and south Richmond were Mallards,American Wigeon, and Snow Geese. OurGrassland Set-aside Program is also an importantcomponentofour research.Through this stewardship program, farmers plantfields with grassland species to improvesoil quality and provide habitatfor wildlife. -submitted by Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust wildlifeutilizefarmf

Ioften refer to the old saying, ‘if you ate today, thank afarmer.’ Ithink it serves as agood reminder of the hard workthey put in 365 days per year to keep ourselves and our families fed. Recently, some farmers have encountered hostility from locals using the BoundaryBay dike.I remind everyone that farmvehicles do have the rightof wayand Iencourage everyone to be respectful of them on their cycling or walkingjourneys
To saythe last twoyears have been difficult for farmers and ranchers across British Columbia would be an under statement. Between record-breaking high temperatures last summer, blazing wildfires, an atmospheric river that completely devastated farms and ranches in communities including SumasPrairie, Merritt, and Princeton, compounded by awet spring and steady rise in oper ating costs, this hasbeen one of the most challenging periods for British Columbia’s agricultureindustry.
Most pressing arethe rising costs of the three ‘F’s’ –feed, fuel, and fertilizer Shortages of feed and fertilizer combined with the higher cost of transportation areposing significantchallenges for our agricultureindustry. To help alleviatesome of this burden, Ihavecalled for financial and climatechange incentives such as tax relief for farmers through carbon tax rebates, tax credits for farmers transitioning to electric farmequipment, and the expansion of the food donation tax credit.Ibelieve these are prudentmeasures that would make life moreaffordable for farmers in the future and help those currently struggling to turnaprofit. However, the challenges facing farmers aren’t strictly monetary. Ihavebeen outspoken about the fact our province is experiencing aveterinarian shortage. Existing veterinarians areexperiencing burnout and newly-credentialed veterinarians arenot choosing to take their desperately needed skills to ruralparts of British Columbia. The government needs to be innovative in the approach it takes to tackle the shortage.I believe they could startbyproviding certainty to students attending the Western College of VeterinaryMedicine in Saskatoon that the additional spaces allocated to them will continue to be funded past the 2022/23 school year, well into the future. These arejustafew of the pressing issues facing the agricultureindustry. Iwill take everyopportunity to remind the minister of her responsibility to ensurefarming is affordable and viable for both the current and next generation of farmers in British Columbia

Even in the face of adversity, farmers have persevered and continued to grow and sell the highest quality food products.Ithas not been easy for them, but I knowthey’reappreciative of the support they have received from consumers in our community who continue to buy local products whenever they areable to. Despite this support, thereremain many unresolved issues requiring immediate attention from our provincial government. In my role as the Official Opposition Critic for Agricultureand Food, Ihave been shining aspotlightonthe growing affordability challenges facing farmers that areultimately being downloaded onto consumers

We wondered how we might build on apartnership and the Stinky Sneaker Sale idea was born. Ridley says, “I had aconnection at amen’sshelter downtown and made contact to see if they might be interested in gently used, preowned good quality runners, and they werevery excited to be able to help distribute them to their clients”. Every late August and through the month of September, customers of the Runinn areable to bring in their used shoes and get adeal on anew pair.Sales Associate, Matt Johnston commented that “it is just awin-win situation for our clients as well as the recipients of the shoes on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.Itfeels really good to be apart of this”. Staffatthe Runinn scrutinize the donated runners and carefully select those shoes that arenot too worntobeshared and the shoes arethen delivered. Monkeypox is in the news, should Ibe concerned or get vaccinated?
MarkNickel BC-HIP, BBA If you know you have hearing loss but arereluctant to get hearing aids beforeyou “absolutely have to,” you’renot alone. An unfortunate statistic in our industry tells us that, on average, people wait seven years between the time they areaffected by hearing loss and when they arefitted for a hearing device. The longer you wait to get hearing aids, the harder it is to eventually adjust to them. This is partially because when your brain stops regularly hearing certain sounds, neural pathways arebroken and those sounds become very difficult to regain if and when you start wearing hearing aids. People who have untreated hearing loss will also subconsciously change their social patterns. For example, you may stop going out for dinners or other group functions because they seem generally tiring or overwhelming without realizing the exhaustion comes from all the extra work your body has to do to process sounds and follow conversation. If you work with atrusted hearing health professional who says you would benefit from hearing aids, avoid the temptation to put it off!

Thank you for this great question. Short answer, for the general population, thereisNOreason to be concerned or get vaccinated at this point as per the BC CDC. As of August 12th, 98 cases of monkeypox have been identified in BC (1059 in all of Canada) –avery low number.Monkeypox is aviral infection, caused by avirus of the Orthopoxvirus genus. Monkeypox is not known to be sexually transmitted, but it can occur through close direct contact with an infected person. Anyone with close AND prolonged contact with acase of monkeypox is at risk of having the infection. In BC, vaccination is available to close contacts and those at the highest risk of infection. Prior smallpox vaccination (BC stopped in 1972) does appear to provide some protection. Please contact the Pharmacy for more information or check the BC CDC information pages. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have. “Your Health –Our Priority” is not just a slogan –itisTHE reason Paul Gibbons, Pharmacist/Owner at the Medicine Shoppe in Tsawwassen, looks forward to helping you every day Lisa Manwaring www.lisamanwaring.com lisa@southwestmortgage.ca 604-805-1833 Can iget an equity take out on my mortgage to renovate my property or pay offmycredit cards? How long should full plate dentures last? This is amultifactorial answer.Foremost it depends on how well you take careofthem. Subsequently diet; the types of foods you eat significantly impact on the wear of your teeth. Course foods tend to wear out the chewing surfaces at amuch quicker rate. White mint candies that have asandy feeling coating are highly abrasive and destructive to artificial teeth. Your particular physiology can affect your fitting surfaces. For example, osteoporosis can affect the fitting surfaces by creating afaster rate of change to your underlying bone structures. Numerous other factors may also play into these scenarios. Icreate dentures to last at least seven to ten years using high quality products; dependent on the above conditions. If you have any other questions you would like answered, please do not hesitate to book afreeconsultation with my office. Or you can write to us via our website at bcdenturist.ca.

On these almost daily walks, she started collecting bits of glass, each time taking aphoto of the handful collected. Shealways knew that some daythis was going to become some formofart.Along with the glass,Nichol began noticing therewas alarge amountofgarbage and debris on the beach too,and began to collect that as well. It wasn’t long before her son Jeremy jumped on boardand they became avid beach cleaners The beach cleaning evolved into the recycling of plastics and cans, the donat ing of usable items and the up-cycling of what was once garbage. The biggest up-cycle was the found freshly broken, meltedand ocean smoothed sea glass. This collection of glass is being transformed from debris into expressive framed artpieces that reflect not only the sun, but also reflect an inspirational and innovative artform. Both Jeremy and Denise arefine artists as well as beach cleaners.Husband, John MacDowell, hasalso come aboard, upcycling old frames and using both new and discarded wood to create unique frames for their paintings and the glass art.
