In the past, the Islanders have hadto purchasefloor time elsewhere, such as the Langley Events Centre, and even use nearbyturf fields to preparetheir players for the junior season. Noweverything can be accomplished right next door to their home arena. “Health and safety is a big thing for our players too.Now we have aclean and drysurface year round. It was always alit tle worrisome if the guys were out here, and there werepuddles and that sortofthing to deal with, so it’s good on both the competitive and healthy side for us,” said Hoegg. “Weheardthe Delta Lacrosse Association’s need for acovered outdoor facility for year-round playand I’msopleased with the outcome,” added Delta Mayor George Harvie. “This project presented an opportunity to benefit Delta’s local sports associations as well as members of the community and is atestament to what can be achieved when we work together.” The opening ceremonies paid tribute to the sport’srich historyin the community.

pentany time in downtown Vancouver lately? I have, and it’s shock ing. If you’reheading thereto shop, tosee agame at BC Place,or aconcertat Rogers Arena, you better have your wits about you. Plan on walking around homeless peoplesleeping on the streetatGeorgia and Granville in frontofthe Bay. Watch for people begging, selling stolen goods and drugs, getting arrested for shop lift ing and loitering at shop entrances.I’veseen it all in the last year. On arecentquick trip to Nordstroms Iparkedmycar on Homer Street.Walking up Robson Iencountered ayoung man, most likely my son’s age, staggering around the sidewalk with his pants at his knees This over sixfoot manwas clearlyhigh on drugs, twitchingand stumbling, and par tially naked. Everypedestrian skillfully maneuvered around him.I hadtopass by him two timesand it wastense Idon’t knowhis story, but as apetite woman walking alone it wasn’t safe for me to approach him.Ifelt compassion forhim.Hewas someone’s son. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority declines toconsiderapproval for GCTCanada’s modest DP4 container port expansion while promoting its ownmassive Terminal 2project.GCT takes VFPA to courtfor alleged bias, arguing that the projects should be considered equally and without bias. Editor: As theson of the late George Massey after whom the George Massey Tunnel was named, I wish to express my thoughts regard ing the naming of the new tunnel crossing to be built in 2030 that will replace the George Massey that was built in 1959. The whole idea that the Ladner Ferrycrossing should be replaced by a tunnel over abridge was promoted and proven to be the rightdecision by myfather from the day he arrived in Ladner with his family in 1936, until it was built in 1959. He personally by phone at acost of some $60, contacted Christiani &NielsonCorporation, who hadbuilt the Mass River Tunnel and asked them, ifthey thoughtit would be possible for them to come to Ladner and determine if atunnel could be built at this location. After determining that this was alegitimateand serious request, they agreed andcameover and filed an engineering reportthat justified that a tunnel should and could be built in that location instead of abridge, due to environmental and foundation conditions My father wenton from there, gathering up moreproof and research and public support, until finally, after morethan20 years, hewas able to convincethe political powers that atunnel should be built to replace the ferry Once again todayithas been proven and decided that another tunnel should be built instead of abridge for those very same reasons The whole principle decision that a tunnel was the best solution over abridge was deter mined by myfather George Massey through his research and deter mination. Onewould hope that this effortbymyfather George Massey would justify the continuation of his name on the new tunnel crossingtobebuilt by 2030.

MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist .com Delta residentscan nowlearn moreabout a special oak tree growing in Ladner’sMemorial Park On Monday, the City ofDelta unveiled astoryboardnear the base of the tree just steps away from the cenotaph. It was initially planted in November 2017 after Delta MP Carla Qualtrough was among 150 recipients across Canada of saplings made available in recognition of the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge. After the First World Warata decimated Vimy Ridge,Lt. Leslie Miller found the remains of a half sunken oak tree.He retrievedsome of the remaining acorns and planted them at his family farm in Scarborough, Ont. The tree’s story, the significance of itslocation andalook back at the famous 1917 four-day battle in northern France areexplained on the storyboard. Qualtrough was joined by Delta Mayor George Harvie,Coun. Dylan Kruger and members of the RoyalCanadian Legion Branch 61 for the special unveiling cer emony. “It’sbeen my pleasure over the past few years to learn moreand more about asoldier who took ahandful of acorns and put them in his pocket and came back to Canada, and howwe have used the opportunity of planting these trees 100 years later, across the countrytore-energize the conversations about Canada’s militaryand what happened in April, 2017,”said Qualtrough. “Even in our ownhousehold, with my nine-year old, whenever we come hereand we kind of look at the tree and we put him beside the tree and we talk about what happened all those years ago and whyweget to play in this beautiful park is because of the sacrifices of the people. The Canadians who came together and foughtin France.” Harvie said the tree and storyboardisavaluable addition to the cenotaph area, for park users and visitors to bet terunderstand our history, especially for future generations “Wecreated the storyboardtoprovide historyand context of Vimy Ridge as partof our ongoing efforts to remember and never forget our fallen soldiers,” said Harvie.“The tree represents aliving memorial to recognize the incredible courage and strength of Canada’s soldiers at Vinny Ridge “Weare also proud of the Ladner Legion and its incredible efforts to remember our past and supportveterans and their families in our community.” 17,200 17,500 GirlsClubs of South CoastBC(Hillside) 1133984Avenue 11,600 11,800 12,000 Boysand GirlsClubs of South CoastBC(Winskill) 9Avenue 2,100 2,100 2,100 7061 Ladner TrunkRoad 4,400 4,500 4,600 BritishColumbiaWaterfowl 5191 RobertsonRoad 50,600 51,600 52,600 BritishColumbiaWaterfowl WaterfowlHabitats 19,400 19,800 20,200 Columbus Charities Association(ColumbusLodge) 8850 118A Street 7,800 8,000 8,200

In July, Canada’s unemploymentrate was just 4.9 per cent, while B.C.’swas 4.7 per cent. InB.C., for business, finance and administrative positions, the unemploymentrateisjust two per cent, said Mike Shekhtman, regional director for Robert Half recruitmentagency. “Sowe’re looking at full employmentfor many specialized positions,” Shekhtman said. “Over the past 18 months, wesaw such an acceleration coming out of the pandemic across multipleindustries, when we sawunemploy mentreaching all-time lows.” According to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, employers werelooking to fill one million job vacancies this summer. The result is predictable. “Wage pressures arebuilding– they accelerated to 5.2 per centyear over year in June,up notably from 3.9 per centa month earlier,” the chamber said. “This will only add to broader cost pressures for Canadian businesses, and the numbers will likely keeprisinginthe context of even higher inflation. This will make things particularly trickyfor small and medium-sized businesses who are already facing significanthiring challenges.”

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem, hoping to tame inflation with rising bank rates, and fearful of acceler ating inflation, recently urged employers to refrain from hiking wages, tothe great ireofunionized labour Michael Scott,vice-presidentof Impact Recruitment’sbuilding division, which works with real estate developers, builders and building managers, said thereare labour shortages “rightacross the board” in everyarea. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened an already tightening labour market. Some workers took advantage of the Canada EmergencyResponse Benefit (CERB) to stop working altogether for a time. Many who re-entered the workforce hadnew demands, like the option to workremotely, according to recent Impact Recruitmentpolling. “Wedid arecentone,” Scott said. “The results were24per centofthe candidates consider, now, flexibility and remote working opportunities to be the most importantbenefit that they can get from their new employer Oneparticularly “hot”space where demand far exceeds supply of workers is digital marketing, Shekhtman said. And despite recentheadlines about high tech companieslike Hootsuite laying offemployees, programmers, engineers, data analysts and other high tech workers arestill verymuch in demand, Shekhtman said. In arecentsurvey, RobertHalf found only two per centoftech company managers planned to eliminatepositions this year, while 40 per centsaid they would be hiring new employees, and 50 per centsaid they’dbefilling vacantpositions Jobrecruiters arealso seeingmore employers willing to hireoutside their immediate geographic region. “For us,a silver lining of the pandemic is that companies have realizedthat, for asegmentofthe market, somepositions can be done remotely,”Shekhtman said. In such acompetitive labour market, many employers feel pressuretooffer higher wages and salaries. But that can create real problems in an organization. Paying anew employee the same,or more, as someone who hasbeen with theorganization for years is arecipe for discontent.
Canadians arealready starting to see labour strife, asunions demand wage increases commensuratewith inflation.
The BCGEU said the Public Service Agencyfailed to meet union demands for cost of living provisions to address inflation.

Tens of thousands of Canadians were able to celebrateLabour Daythis year by not setting their alarmclocks They didn’t need to get up early the next daybecause they arenow retired. In July, Statistics Canada reported that 300,000 Canadians hadretired in the previous 12 months –a 30 per cent increase from the same period the year prior The retirement wave was partofthe GreatResignation that was expected dur ingthe pandemic, but came about ayear later than expected. That large number of retirements in asingle year, coupled with asharp drop in immigration in 2020, is putting an intense squeeze on the Canadian labour market.Fromemergencyroomphysicians and nurses to deliverydrivers, theresimply aren’t enough skilled workers rightnow. “The big, big difference between whereweare todayand 2019, for instance, isthat immigration was cut over the last two years, and that’s hada significantimpact on the supply of workers,” said PedroAntunes, chief economist for the Conference BoardofCanada While Canada registered morethan 400,000 immigrants in 2021, the numbers can be misleading, because alot of those new immigrants werealready in the countryasstudents or temporaryfor eign workers “People who arealready in Canada, we areconverting them from non-per manentresidenttoimmigrant,”Antunes said. “That changes nothing in terms of the pool of workers.”

With babyboomers living longer than previous generations (an average of nine years longer than NorthAmericans in 1921), many boomers could continue working well past65– provided they wantto, and provided thereare incentives to do so Helen Spence, founder of TopSixty Over Sixty, does consulting for older workers who wanttocontinue working or re-enter the workforce. She said many Canadians who reach 65 look forwardto having abreak from work. Butafter they have hadayear or two of full retirement, many retirees arewilling and able to go back to work, at least part-time.Others mightsimply wantto slowdownabit. “Thereare many people who’d be per fectly happytostayintheir company or in their business and have reduced time, and not be paid as much,” Spence said. Notall employers recognize the value of older, experienced workers, however, and still prefer younger ones in their recruiting. It’s amindset Spence said employers mightneed to rethink, as the labour pool continues to shrink.
“I think they thinkthat everybody’s replaceable,” Spence said. “But there’sa ton of corporateand institutional memorythat walks out the door everytime somebody retires.” From her experience,Spence said whether an employee decides to continue working after 65 or not “has everything to do with who the employer is and what the flexibility issues are. ”
September1,2022 The Delta Optimist A21 Labour Day While arecession mightease the labour shortage temporarily, the draining of the pool of working-aged Canadians is along-termtrend that promises to get worse, warns RBC Economics Between 2016 and 2021, the number of Canadians aged 65 and older was seven million –18per centofthe Canadian population –according to Statistics Canada, and 22 per centof working age Canadiansare nowbetween the ages of 55 to 64. In other words,one-fifth of working ageCanadians areset to retireoverthe next decade, and Canada’s birth rate has not been high enough to fill that. “The tail-end of the babyboom is at its peak rightnow,” Antunes said. “The problem is rightnow.Overthe next, five or six years,we’re going to see these folks really leave agap as they leave the workforce.” In resource sectors, companies have been investing in skills training for First Nations with some success. While the employmentratefor Indigenous Canadians hasimproved slightly over the last 10 years,First Nations represent apotential humanresources pool that is still largely untapped. Another demographic that employers mayneed to starttapping is seniors.

Aspring memo from Elon Musk laid barewhat the world’s richest man thoughtofremote working two years into the pandemic: Employees were to return the office for aminimum of 40 hours aweek or departTesla Inc. (Nasdaq:TSLA). In the wake of Musk’s mandate, reports soon emerged of employees finding therewerenot enough parking spaces or desks to accommodate them all. Thelackofforesightinback-to-office planning hasbeen an all-too-common scenario, according to Wayne Berger “Workers arecoming back to an office only to recognize that the meet ings that aretaking place that dayare still being held virtually,”said the CEO of IWG plc’s NorthAmerica and Latin America division, whose company offers 3,500 co-working spaces across the globe “They’rerequired to come in regard less of the type of workthatisrequired of them that day, which is fairly nonsensical.” Even as many companies tryto entice workers back to the office with offers of free food or parking, Berger and other experts sayemployers risk alienating their workforce without proper planning.

“They wantchoice and flexibility in whereand when they conduct their work,”hesaid, adding that it was amisconception that most people do not wish to return to the office “The issue really comes down to the fact that alarge percentage of the workforce does not wanttogotoan office five days aweek, each and every week.”
Just over three-quarters (76 per cent) of Canadian studentworkers report amenities like free coffee and snacks, and high-quality cafeteria foods, are importantfor their futureworkplace, according to an Aprilreport conducted by JED Consulting and commissioned by Colliers Canada ButBerger said offerings of free amenities like food to offset inconveniences like alonger, moreexpensive commutes have been limited.
“Wedon’t believe there’sgoing to be afull-time return to the office, but we do see alot of value in people returning to office to collaborate, get creative and develop strong relationships,” Scott Wasserman, general manger of the Americas for Vancouver-based digital consultancyAppnovation Technologies Inc., said in an email. Forthose returning to Appnovation’s office, workers will find morecollaboration spaces inside as well as treatdaysfeaturing free lunches and apolicyallowing people to bring their dogs to work. It appears some of these enticements areeffective among certain cohorts.
“The idea of just basically blindly mandating or rolling out atype of return-to-workpolicythat isn’t carefully thoughtthrough and also clearly communicated is creating moredamage amongst the workforce,” Berger said. “Those companies arefacing low morale, whereas they hadhigh morale when people hadmorechoice and optionality with wherethey’reworking.” Vancouver-based Prometheus Private AdvisoryGroup hasbeen trying to thread that needle, offering parking reimbursements for those who come in, improving amenities such as free snacks and sometimes-free lunches, as well as setting up abarbecue on the company patio “Oh, and lots of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic,”said Philip Tsai, clientexperience manager at the financial literacyfirm. “We’ve alsoeliminated the dress code so people areable to come into the office in any kind of outfit they’d like.” He said the company made the adjustments after realizing it could not hide from the fact that it’s cheaper and morecomfortable for employees to workfromhome.

“Atfirst,I was like there is no wayIamgoing to move to Ohio and leave all my friends,” smiled Maznik who began playing lacrosse with the Delta Islanders organization when he was five.“Butthe moreI thoughtabout it, maybe it was an experience Iwas passing up,a once in alifetime experience. It’saninternational school so Ihavefriends from Spain and Russia. It’s unreal. My whole daywas basedonjustschool and lacrosse.Iloved it.”
The memorable trip capped what hasbeen ahectic summer for Maznik. Todd grew up in Chemainus, BC, on Vancouver Island. After high school, he studied culinary arts at Malaspina College. Upon graduation, he moved to the mainland and spent acouple of years working as asous chef in various restaurants in Vancouver.
Todd was incredibly smart and always in search of knowledge, experience and adventure. He loved Boxing and Muay Thai, both as aspectator as well as apracticing participant. He travelled to Vietnam and Thailand as often as he could to train, and for some reason loved to spend time getting beaten up at his favourite gym in Thailand. He also had his own gym set up in his parent’s garage and you could find him there training at least 5days aweek. His nephew JD is now carrying on the Boxing tradition and that would make Todd so proud.
