The Ladner Pioneers are national champions for the third time in their storied history They pulled out a thrilling 8 6 win over the Akwesasne Bucks in the gold medal game at the President’s Cup national senior “B” lacrosse championships in Edmonton on Saturday night The 54th edition of the tournament featured champions from six leagues across the coun try The final was the Pioneers’ eighth game in seven days They ral lied from a 6 2 deficit 24 hours earlier for a 14 8 semi final victory over defending champion Six Nations Rivermen The title game was a nail biter from start to finish with Ladner scor ing an empty net goal in the dying seconds to put away the pesky Can Am League champions The Pioneers were launched back in the 1980s by Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductee Shirley Burr Her son John has been active with the team as a player, coach and now president/governor. Their previous titles came in 1998 and 2004 Saturday’s win ended an 18 year dry spell for B C teams.
“It’s all still surreal to me and it really hasn’t all sunk in yet,” said John in an interview with the Optimist on Monday “Our guys dug deep and did what they had to do. Our trainers also did a fantastic job getting them ready every game, just managing all the injuries and sore muscles.

I have been going to Ladner arena since I could walk. This one is special to be bringing it back to Ladner,” said Logan The livestream of the game was shown in front of a sold out crowd at the Tsawwassen Legion. “They were cheer ing us on and sending me updates and as well I was sending them updates,” added Burr. “I would like to thank all our fans and families for the support we got back home We’re over the moon about it.” Defender Sam Clare, who has also come through the local lacrosse ranks, joined leading scorer Tyler Pace as First Team Tournament All Stars For more on Ladner’s President’s Cup win see page 24. 6

DC Fast Charge sta tions, also referred to as Level 3 charging stations, use a higher power charge which allows electric vehicles to be fully charged in just 30-to-40 minutes Most electric vehicles can use those stations The approximate cost to install a DC Fast Charge station is $150,000, a Delta staff report notes

Speaking on back ground during a techni cal briefing, a provincial health official said the spike protein from the BA 1 subvariant still provides a good boost of protection against infec tion as well as protection against serious illness from COVID 19. The offi cial went on to state more data is needed to deter mine if the Moderna and Pfizer Inc vaccines fea turing the BA 4 or BA 5 spike proteins are more effective. Those particular vac cines have not been approved by Health Canada, whereas the BA 1 vaccine from Moderna was approved by regulators Sept 1 The booster vaccines will be administered starting at 517 pharma cies across the province in the coming days, while regional health authori ties will begin carrying out vaccinations Sept. 19. Health authorities are responsible for hard to reach populations, such as the homeless and those in correctional facilities Invites will be deliv ered based on the inter val since someone ’ s last dose and the health risks one faces if they are infected High risk individuals include those who are immu nocompromised, have cancer and are receiving treatment, those with diabetes and those with chronic liver disease People who are obese, have substance use dis orders and are pregnant are also considered to be at a higher risk Because most health care workers received their initial vaccinations and boosters earlier than the general population, they will also be receiv ing invites for the latest round of booster shots earlier By early October, the province expects to be able to administer COVID 19 boosters and flu shots

The first cohort of British Columbians seeking the next wave of booster shots against COVID 19 could be get ting their latest jabs in just a few days Provincial officials confirmed Tuesday 109,300 shots of Moderna Inc’s bivalent vaccine are due to arrive by the end of the week. Booster invites for prioritized groups such as health care workers and high risk individuals will begin as soon as those doses arrive in the province. These bivalent vac cines feature a mix of vaccines, similar to how flu vaccines can often include three or four combinations of vac cines. In this case, the biva lent vaccine is meant to offer protection against the original COVID 19 virus as well as the more contagious Omicron vari ant. This particular bivalent shot carries the spike protein for the BA 1 subvariant of Omicron, rather than the circu lating BA 4 and BA 5 subvariants that many Americans are receiving as part of that country’s fall booster campaign (the spike protein is what triggers an immune response in recipients).

They are trying to end the stigma through dialogue, education and awareness The Delta Community Action Team (DCAT) was established in 2018 as a provincial organization to address the opioid cri sis across the province “During the first period right before the pandemic we had some forums, or panels and the public came for interaction, discussion and demonstrations on how to administer Naloxone,” said DCAT spokesperson Julie Chadwick, who is also the executive director of Deltassist “Then, unfor tunately, the pandemic came and shut all of that down, but deaths continued to rise in the province because one of the most harmful was certainly the toxic drug supply, but because of the pandemic, people were being asked to self isolate “One of big problems was people were over dosing in isolation and that just contributed to the rise in deaths due to the toxic drug supply” Chadwick said now that the pandemic restrictions have started loosening up, DCAT is getting more active in the community. She said there is a new project coordinator in place and are mov ing ahead with more outreach and awareness work That outreach and awareness work was front and centre on Aug 28 as DCAT had a booth set up at the Ladner Village Market “We were there to promote information around the opioid crisis and also address the misinformation that is out there There is such a stigma attached to substance abuse There are many reasons why people use substances. I think what happens is that most peoples’ mind immediately go down to the Downtown Eastside. Some of those thoughts may not be that chari table in terms of why should we spend any money on these people, but these are people people who have fami lies and for one reason or another this is not a choice that people make. This is, more than not, a result of some kind of trauma People have turned to substances to cope This was another thing we saw during the pandemic the isola tion, the not knowing and the constant mental health challenges” Chadwick said at Deltassist, for instance, their staff saw a 50 to 60 per cent increase in referrals to substance abuse programs “We received a num ber of grants from the province, which we were so grateful for to support people in our programs, ” she said “It really is about learning, educa tion and awareness and that’s what our role is” To find out more about DCAT, contact Deltassist at: https://del tassist com DCAT trying to re-connect to help end the stigma

Contributing Writer Sgt. Katlyn Garcia and Const Liz Ross have a safe space to work within the Delta Police Department. As members of the LGBTQ community they’re supported in their workplace, but that sense of belonging should extend to the general community, so everyone feels safe and accepted, hence the newly formed, DPD Proud Initiative. “It’s brand new We’ve got lots of ideas. We are officially out in uniform Our identities are blend ing for the first time as members It’s a big deal for us, ” Garcia said The initiative launched a week ago when the offi cers realized they have unique experiences and can bring attention to LGBTQ issues both with in the department and in the larger community. A first step for the Proud Initiative was to be present at the depart ment’s recruiting drive on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The recruiting depart ment was there as per usual, but the Proud Initiative was on hand as well to explain about what it’s like to be queer and to be a police officer It’s the first such event for the department, Garcia noted She wants to make the point that people who are critical of policing should think about signing up and working for change from the inside “We’d love to have more members of the queer community join policing,” she said “It’s easy to be on the outside complaining and want ing all the change with policing But if you ’ re not working from the inside, your opinions are not as valid, because this is where the change will happen and this is what we ’ re trying to do” Garcia said a big part of the initiative is to make it OK for police officers to live their truth, “and be confident and comfort able here.” She’s been a member of the department for the past 11 years “Delta has been extremely inclusive from the beginning I’ve always felt that I’ve been seen and heard as a queer member here and I’ve always been really proud to be myself and supported by my depart ment,” Garcia said. “The big thing for us as queer members is because there aren’t a lot of us, we ’ ve both found that we ’ ve often ended up as being a bit of bridge to other members, a bit of an educational system for other mem bers who don’t necessar ily have that knowledge not being a part of the community,” added Ross. That education process takes place every day in the community at large, she added. “We really want to show the community we ’ re here and we ’ re queer and we ’ re really proud of what we do and who we are and if we can do it, you can do it too,” Ross said.

n my capacity as editor here at the Optimist, I have had the privi lege to get to know many in our business community in not only a professional level, but a per sonal one since I started working in this community in 2016 Time and time again I am amazed at our business community here in South Delta. Many of our businesses are locally owned, employ locals and give back to our local community groups and associations They provide gifts for raffles, sponsor sports teams and help put on many of the free events that so many of us enjoy throughout the year But sadly, some in our community do not appreciate our local businesses It is a rite of passage is seems when someone has a negative experience at a local business, be it poor service, a sub par meal or a negative encounter with an employee, that instead of speaking with that business, maybe visiting or calling them the next day, the immedi ate reaction is to jump on Facebook groups and shame that business online Once the first post lands in the Tsawwassen Loop or Ladner’s Landing, then let the escalation begin. Others start piling on suggesting that it would be better if said business would just close Usually the person who puts up the initial post doesn’t respond to any of the comments, rather, just sits back with the popcorn and admires at their handy work

Many suggest that if you can’t live here then it is time to move on That may be true to some extent, but a better model to ensure viable and sustainable strong towns is to increase our housing options across the board.
We have all either expe rienced or have seen how housing requirements change through our life. Having hous ing choice is important for us to grow within our communi ties rather than being forced to move from our friends and families
It is really sad that we seem to think that this behaviour is okay Does no one take into account how these posts effect the employees, the owners and their families? Effects the reputation of their business? This type of online business shaming has to stop.

It would seem that housing choice is top of mind, especial ly if you are within the younger demographic Additionally, with Delta’s increasing aging popula tion, more housing form will be needed to accommodate seniors wishing to “ age in place” rather than being forced to move to communities that offer more opportunity to down size Currently seniors make up 15 to 20 per cent of Delta’s population By 2024 this number is expected to increase to 41 per cent. How will our Delta politi cians deal with immense housing challenges to keep our city vibrant and viable? Delta’s Housing Action Plan (2021) has eight strategies to deal with these housing chal lenges Three of note are to “explore ways to increase land availability for priority hous ing” , “pilot pre zoning in select areas near town centres” , and “create opportunities for gentle density”
A local group called Deltans for People Oriented Places (Del POP) has issued a press release itemizing priorities they would like to see an ideal council candidate address There are many of them, but of note in the top five is to “Approve Housing Choice and Lightened Zoning” You can view all of the suggestions at http://www delpop ca Published every Thursday by the Delta Optimist a division of LMP Publication Limited Partnership 5008 47A Avenue, Delta, BC V4K 1T8 Phone 604 946 4451 Deliveries 604 946 5171 wwwdelta-optimist com PUBLISHER: Pierre Pelletier ppelletier@delta-optimist com EDITOR Ian Jacques editor @delta-optimist com or ijacques@delta optimist com SPORTS Mark Booth mbooth@delta-optimist com REPORTERS: Sandor Gyarmati sgyarmati@ delta-optimist com Mark Booth mbooth@delta-optimist com PHOTOGRAPHER: Jim Kinnear jimgkinnear@netscape.net

In the document titled “Delta’s Social Profile“, (2017), it is noted that housing stock will be needed to be increased by 8,300 units by 2041 to adequately handle population growth Some of this need has been addressed through TFN developments, Tsawwassen Springs and the Southlands, but it is abundantly clear that more stock and choice is needed Currently, our housing stock is made up of 5 5 per cent townhomes, 14 per cent of apartments and multi family and 80 per cent single family

While I do appreci ate all the community events, such as the May Day parade, the concert band festival and the summer movies shown in Memorial Park, it would be great to see perhaps a writers’ fes tival and a small scale music festival It was good to see a stage in the centre of the village to present Warren Dean Flandez in concert and nice to see that it was well attended I hope that we see more of these types of events. All styles of music can be featured perhaps once a month Food for thought for our city council going for ward Babe Gurr Food for thought for the new council
The work involved was immense and watching the care that was taken as the trees were driven literally inch by inch on a flatbed truck down the street with men on either side of the truck lifting power lines overhead so as not to cause any damage was nothing short of impressive Well done to you all!

Editor: What a delight it has been over the last two summers to witness Deltans of all ages enjoy ing the pop up parks around our community, particularly the one on Bridge Street. Set at the heart of Ladner Village, this park provides an obvious gathering place for fami lies with children, creates a landing spot for visitors, and complements the small businesses nearby. Whether intentionally or not, it also keeps vehicle traffic to the Village’s periphery, making the whole area a more enjoy able place to spend time (and money) With all that in mind, I think it is worth asking: why not make it permanent? Ladner Village is undoubtedly in the midst of a revival, with the exciting changes coming to Chisolm Street and the waterfront. By the looks of the concept sketches, that project will trans form and beautify the area, and give us locals another outdoor space of which to be proud. A permanent Bridge Street Park serves a much more practical purpose For those traversing the Village, it is a natural rest stop, a place to enjoy lunch, people watch, or have a chat. And impor tantly for our local busi nesses, it gets people into the Village core and gives them a reason to linger Let’s take advantage of our relatively mild cli mate and make this won derful exercise in place making permanent Jordon Miller

Editor: A big thank you to the amazing team that has relocated some mature trees from 44th Avenue to Cromie Park What a gift to live in a community that chooses to value these treasures
I have operated both pedal and e bikes on the trails and dikes of Delta for the past 50 years. HUB cycling certainly does not speak for me I have always thought of the trails as recre ational areas and not as commuter roads. We already have plenty of speeding bikes on the trails and dikes Can you imagine if the dikes were paved? They would be too dangerous to walk on! Also we should keep oil and tar based black top as far away from the ocean as possible There’s already too much pollution getting into the ocean. Also, while I’m on my soapbox, walkers, please keep your dog on a leash.
Editor: I moved to Ladner a year ago and I absolutely love living here It is a sweet small town that offers a variety of great outdoor activities, with walks, cycling, boating and the farmers market is top notch. However I feel Ladner is culturally under whelming.

“Although the City of Delta is currently impact ed by the national short age of lifeguards, swim instructors, and aquafit instructors, we are work ing diligently to keep our facilities open, ” said the City in a news release “In addition, the City has established minimum lifeguard staffing require ments for each pool that have been developed with the Lifesaving Society of BC These are well established stan dards that we continue to meet as they are instru mental in protecting the health and safety of all users. “In an effort to keep each facility open, while also providing the best and safest service pos sible at our aquatic cen tres, public swimming times will be reduced to before and after swim ming lessons, with excep tion to length swimming at Sungod Recreation Centre during lessons”
If you ’ re buying a rab bit for your 10 year old, beware your rabbit still will be around when he or she goes to university, Voutilainen said Usually the shelter adopts out four or five rabbits a year. At that rate, it will be two years before the current resi dents find homes. With no more room for the furry creatures, the shelter has a waitlist for people who want to sur render their pets. Voutilainen said people should do some research before making a decision to get a pet. People often abandon what used to be their pets in public parks, which can lead to over popu lation in those parks, because rabbits, breed like rabbits. If left outdoors, the domestic rabbits become prey to wily coyotes, house cats, raccoons or sharp eyed eagles who will swoop down from above And because they’re not used to being outdoors, they can also be killed by cars. Workers at the shelter try to recover them if they’re outdoors Disease, such as rabbit hemorrhagic disease, is another threat “We’re trying our best, but it’s getting to the scenario where we are running out of space here and it’s the same in other municipalities,” Voutilainen said. “If you were considering a rabbit and understand the spe cialized care they require, now is the time” Instead of giving up their pets to a shelter, owners can first ask fam ily or friends, or post an accurate description online or at local vet erinarians or businesses

If you ’ re looking for a pet that’s smart and play ful, but you don’t want a dog or cat, a rabbit could help you fill your need. And if you stop in at the Delta Community Animal Shelter you’ll be able to choose from 11 of the cute critters now looking for a home The shelter is currently at capacity for such ani mals, said manager Ryan Voutilainen “They’re very smart and they all have their own individual person alities,” he said “They’re very inquisitive and they love to play and that sort of thing They’re fun pets to have, but they do require some care and attention as well.”
The City of Delta has announced that they will have revised public swimming times at all of the cities aquatic centres effective Sept 12

As parents, we are praying for our kids and we thought we share them with you for inspi ration Here are some of our prayers: God protect our kids from the desire of popu larity. Even as an adult I feel the tug toward compro mise if it means being liked or accepted Let them not compromise their values and faith I’m praying that our kids would find their worth and identity in Jesus rather than in the “likes” they receive from others God guard them from comparison. Our kids are going to come in contact with oth ers who have more than they do We’re praying, God guard them from comparison and instead teach them a sense of contentment, thankful ness, and generosity God help them see our home as a safe place. Help them to see that they can be themselves, with all their insecurities, fears, and hurts. They will always be safe at home God create in them a desire to communicate with us. Let us have more than one word answers “good” or “fine.” We pray that we will be present to give them the opportunity to com municate honestly with us about the real things that are going on in their lives Let them confide in us regarding the things they aren’t willing or able to share anywhere else. Teach them persever ance. With each grade, the homework grows more intense While I’m still able to help our second grader with her math, our ninth grader has moved beyond my capability. That’s a difficult thing for me, but it’s an opportu nity for them to learn a great life lesson the per severance to keep at it These are not the only prayers to pray as this school year begins, but it’s a start And our prayer for all the parents: God help us to represent your love, kindness, compassion, discipline, and forgive ness towards our chil dren

“Following the won derful reception of my book, The Most Magnificent Thing back in 2014, my publisher, Kids Can Press, asked if I would ever consider doing a follow up book,” said Spires “The first book came from my own struggles with the creative process and the frustration that arises when you can’t make something just right, so I took a bit of time and tried to envision what a sequel to the girl’s cre ative journey would look like “I thought about it and thought about it and came up with…nothing. I had no idea what my character and her trusty canine assistant could do in a second book. Then I realized that, once again, my creative journey, or in this case, my creative block, was my characters journey too” Spires said she created The Most Magnificent Idea for all the kids (and creative adults) who have ever thought, ‘I don’t know what to do/make/ write/draw’ This book explores the other side of the creative process and what to do on the days when inspiration is in short supply “It was such a joy to reconnect with this char acter and her world after eight years, ” she added “I’m so excited to get to play in her world some as I get started on the next book in the Magnificent series and as I work with Nelvana as they work to develop the Magnificent books into an animated television series”

Medical tribute Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is com mon to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in infor mation and services pertaining to that illness
Many such groups have a “donate in memory ” option on their websites Oftentimes families are notified regard ing who made memorial donations in their loved ones ’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed Personal intentions Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a char ity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholar ship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater Finish their work If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project.

Death & Dying
The loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one ’ s memory while helping others Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do some good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one Create a charitable foundation Those who have the time and resources can establish their own chari table groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group Community foundation Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a com munity, such as a local park.
* Contact your local newspaper Some newspapers may have obituary guidelines that govern things like writing style and obituary length Before writing an obituary, contact your local newspa per to determine if they have any such rules in place. Some newspapers may only publish obituaries written by their own staff members.

Tips
Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy Even those comforted by the acknowledgment that a recently deceased friend or family member lived a full life may still struggle with the sense of loss that comes with the passing of a loved one Upon the passing of a loved one, an individual is often tasked with writing an obituary. Some people may find writing an obituary is cathartic, providing an opportunity to tell a loved one ’ s life story and indicate how unique the deceased was Because writing an obituary is not something people are asked to do every day, it’s understandable if many men and women don’t know where to begin.

* Do not feel obliged to include cause of death While acquaintances who first learn of a person ’ s death via an obituary may be curious about cause of death, loved ones of the deceased do not have to include such information if they are uncomfortable doing so Many obituar ies never include such information, so readers likely won’t expect it Those who are comfortable including such informa tion in the obituary may find it helps them avoid having to answer numerous inquiries about the loved one ’ s demise at the ensuing visitation and funeral services. * Include some biographical infor mation. Obituaries are typically more than simple announcements of death Some simple biological information can shed light on who the deceased was and his or her personal and profes sional accomplishments Avoid getting too detailed, as newspapers may not accept obituaries that are very lengthy But biographical information like full name, place of birth, family (i e , spouse, children, grandchildren, etc ), military service, place of employment, charity work, and hobbies can give readers an accurate idea of the life your loved one lived Metro
Obituaries do not necessarily have to follow a formula, but the following tips can help people compose an obituary that conveys who their deceased loved one was and how much this person meant to friends and family.

Why millennials should be writing their Wills
If you have minor children, a Will is the best way to appoint a legal guardian for your children in the event of your death Appointing a guardian in your Will helps to ensure that someone you trust can step in and take care of your children right away, without needing to apply to court for legal guardianship (creating uncertainty and additional expense)
want to consider having a Power of Attorney and Representation Agreement in place A Power of Attorney allows you to designate someone to take care of your legal and financial affairs if you are unable to do so, which can be useful if you are dealing with an unexpected illness or injury, or are out of province for work or holidays A Representation Agreement allows you to provide direc tions regarding your health care wishes and to appoint a representative to make decisions on your behalf if you are inca pable Think of it as a medical Power of Attorney As more and more millennials build their families, enter the real estate mar ket and accumulate other assets, it is becoming increasingly important for them to have an estate plan in place The peace of mind that comes with knowing your affairs are in order makes estate planning a worthwhile investment just ask your parents or grandparents!
AYNSLEY SEVERIDE Contributing Writer Estate planning is likely not top of mind for most millennials. Many are focused on starting or grow ing their careers and families and may believe they have not accumulated enough wealth to make estate planning worthwhile There is a common misconception that only older adults, or millennials with significant wealth, need a Will. However, there are several reasons why estate planning is still important for the typical millennial Let’s look at a few examples
Blended families are the new normal! But they raise challenging issues that require experience and expertise when it comes to estate planning. At Severide Law, our estate planning team is up to the challenge. We have prepared new estate plans for many couples who have re-partnered later in life with children from previous relationships. There are unique and important considerations with these estate plans, and we are here to advise and guide you as you implement an estate plan that works for you and your loved ones. For help with your estate plan, or just for some good advice, give us a call or visit us online!
If you have pets, as many millennials do, a Will can also appoint a guardian for your pet and even provide a fund to ensure that the pet’s expenses will be covered Without a pet clause in a Will, a pet may need to be put up for adoption if no one steps forward to care for them A Will is also the primary means of planning the distribution of your assets upon death to family, friends or favourite charities Even if your assets are modest, it is still preferable for you to decide how they will be distributed, especially if you want some or all of your assets to go to friends or other loved ones who are not blood relatives Without a proper Will, your estate will be distributed according to BC law, and the distribution may not align with your wishes A Will can also allow you to protect your digital assets, including social media, online accounts and cryp tocurrencies, by designating someone you trust to protect your privacy and to facilitate the management of those digi tal assets Dying without a Will creates chal lenges for your loved ones as it places the burden on them to sort out your affairs, which can be a time consuming and expensive task at an emotional time Having a Will in place brings peace of mind with the knowledge that your loved ones will be able to follow your stated wishes and directions to resolve the legal, financial and child care issues raised by your death. In addition to a Will, millennials may

“A guy like (leading scorer) Tyler Pace who has won NCAA, Minto Cup and National Lacrosse League championships thought we were crazy He looked at this team we had built and thought how could we lose? The President’s Cup is back in B C for the first time since 2004 after Ladner prevailed at the seven team senior “B” championships in Edmonton It took eight games in seven days, including an 8 6 win over Can Am League champions Akwesasne Bucks on Saturday night. It was the Pioneers’ fourth consecutive trip to nationals after initially being over whelmed at the 2017 tournament This time they headed to Alberta with a roster loaded with pro talent that steamrolled through the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association to the point where it didn’t sit well with some of their opponents Yet, all along longtime head coach Ross Frehlick insisted that’s what was required to compete at nationals and he couldn’t have been more right Ladner had its hands full throughout the week falling to the host Edmonton Miners in its final round robin game then rallying from a 6 2 second period deficit to defeat defending champion Six Nations Rivermen in the semi finals

The junior men ’ s baseball team went undefeated in the regular season (14 0) then captured B C Minor Baseball’s provincial title with a come from behind 6 5 win over the White Rock Wranglers in the championship game played on Aug 21 at Winskill Park in Tsawwassen. The Brewers become the first team in league history to repeat as provincial champions while hosting the tournament on their own diamond. They leaned on the pitching talents of Cam Gray and Declan Forbes to open the playoffs with wins over Aldergrove (9 1) and White Rock (10 2) Gray helped his own cause with a three run homer against the Wranglers to secure a spot in the final White Rock bounced back to trim Ladner 2 1 and earn another shot at the Brewers

Brian Elsey and Harry Ratchford were our Realtors for our first home purchase last year We felt as though they continually went above and beyond in advocating for us in an incredibly competitive market. They were both enthusiastic and empathetic, recognizing that this was a sometimes overwhelming process. We really appreciated their patience in educating us in the real estate process, both from a buying, selling and investment standpoint. We are so happy with our new home, and feel confident that it is a great place for us now and will remain a great investment in the future. We were so grateful to them for being so honest and pro-active about our options throughout our search. Their referral network also took huge pressure off of us, as I did not have to research into mortgage brokers or inspectors, saving us time and stress when it really counted Brian and Harry have taken care of us every step of the way Thank you Brian and Harry!! In her 88th year, beloved wife and mother, Lorraine Chan (nee Mar), passed peacefully at KinVillage. The eldest daughter of Stanley Goun Mar and Dora (Eng) Mar, Lorraine grew up in and around Vancouver’s Chinatown, making homes with her family in Strathcona, Mount Pleasant, and South Cambie. She was proud to be a second generation Chinese Canadian and alumnus of Strathcona Elementary and King Edward High School, where she was an avid volleyball player with a lightning serve. Lorraine worked for many years alongside her father at Gunn’s Travel on Main St in Chinatown before becoming an executive secretary at the local Credit Union In the early 60s, she met the boy next door (literally), married, and moved to her second home of Tsawwassen where she raised her two children. Lorraine and her husband Joe were some of the original settlers in Tsawwassen, which was mostly dirt roads and central mailboxes at that time. For close to sixty years, Lorraine was the consummate homemaker, remembered for her quiet dignity and compassion for the underdog. Lorraine is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joe, and her children, Andrea (Martin) and Greg (Matthew), who were with her throughout her final journey home. At Lorraine’s request, there will be no service; a private gathering of family and friends will be held on September 25th. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Lorraine Chan’s name to the KinVillage Association or the Canadian Cancer Society. With glowing hearts, we honour her life and legacy.
