It was a resounding victory for re elected Mayor George Harvie and his Achieving for Delta Team

In last Saturday’s municipal election, Harvie beat out independent challeng ers Peter van der Velden and Joginder Randhawa by a wide margin, capturing 77 per cent of the vote for the mayor ’ s seat while comfortably taking every Delta poll

His slate also took all six council seats by a wide margin, as well as all but one of the school board seats

It was the result of not only his record the past four years, including guiding the city through the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic, but also a lot of hard campaigning work, including his team knocking on more than 15,000 doors to hear directly from residents, he told the Optimist this week.

“I’ve never, ever rested on my laurels Not only did we work so hard to get re elected, but I worked very hard being mayor We accomplished a lot, even with a council that at times was dif ficult insofar as trying to move the city ahead,” he said. “On the election side, our team worked tirelessly together I think the difference this time is we took two years to put a team together, versus the last time we ran (2018 election) when it was two months. We were able to interview a number of people who showed interest and the result was a very united team They recognize that the mayor is the leader, and my job is to ensure we fulfill the promises we made

to the citizens of Delta during the elec tion campaign”

The best feedback they could have gotten was going door to door and the majority of feedback received was that residents approved the direction the city was going, unlike the turmoil seen in other cities, said Harvie, adding resi dents wanted the city to continue mov ing in the right direction on such issues as public safety, having more housing units and creating more daycare spaces

He said council has a strong mix of talent from both North and South Delta, but it’s also important for council to be a group with each member focus ing on not just one area

The focus should remain Delta being one community, rather than split between the north and south, he said.

“I think for the first time it feels very much together with the canvassing that we ran and with the results of the election We all think that we ’ re just one city, not north and south. Other mayors and other councils had pushed that agenda quite a bit and even at the council table this term, there was talk about Winskill (Aquatic & Fitness Centre) and we had Lois (Jackson) and Jeannie (Kanakos) talking about having the citizens of Tsawwassen pay for that project, which we estimated at around $40 million. Yet, they accepted that it was well over $30 million up in North Delta for the rec centre redevelopment and the new performing arts centre,” said Harvie

“I was very upset over that, because we are one city If council keeps acting like there’s a north and south, it’ll never

Thanks for following us on:

get solved, but this council will be act ing like there’s just one city.”

He said he is looking forward to the city’s issues being recognized at Metro Vancouver, particularly when it comes to the environment, as well as TransLink

“We made some strides working together with the Mayors’ Council and together with the directors of Metro Vancouver and I will continue to work

as a partner with all the mayors, ” he said.

Harvie said over the past four years they’ve also built good relationships with several members of Surrey coun cil who were re elected including new Mayor Brenda Lock, which is important when it comes to the future of the Scott Road corridor.

He added he’s eager to roll up his sleeves and get back to work.

Johal and Dosanjh become first BIPOC councillors in Delta

“We’re all community, one Delta, and this coun cil represents that unity.”

That’s what newly elected Coun Jessie Dosanjh told the Optimist this week, fol lowing Achieving for Delta’s sweep of the may oralty and council seats in last Saturday’s munici pal election.

Dosanjh, who was a school trustee the previ ous term, is one of four new faces on council, along with Jennifer Johal, Rod Binder and Daniel Boisvert, who also served on the school board the past four years.

They join re elected Mayor George Harvie, Dylan Kruger and Alicia Guichon on a new look council that Dosanjh says not only represents both North and South Delta, but also diverse back grounds and experiences

What’s more, Dosanjh and Johal represent a significant milestone in Delta municipal politics as the first people of South Asian decent to be elected to council

“I’m very honoured to be part of Delta history, but again, I strongly say we are one and represent one Delta I like to say the power in each of us comes from all of us, ” said Dosanjh.

He said the new coun cil has a lot of different expertise and experience, bringing different voices

to the table

Noting he’s honoured to have been asked by Harvie to be part of their team, and that Delta residents have put their trust in them, Dosanjh said he believes increas ing the housing supply and providing police the necessary resources to maintain public safety are top priorities He said those are issues which he heard most often come up as they knocked on thousands of doors the past few months.

An enthusiastic Johal agreed, saying she’s also proud being among the first two people of South Asian decent getting onto council, adding the new group is very well rounded

She said Harvie care fully selected individuals who had different per spectives and come from different walks of life.

“When you have all of those components, voices are brought to the table and that’s reflective of our diverse community of Delta, and so this is an opportunity I’m excited to be a part of Our coun cil should be reflective of Delta and that’s what’s happened here,” she said. “We know we are repre senting everyone. This is an accomplishment for Delta all together, and it’s a stepping stone for our youth and future gen erations to move forward and move upward when it comes to the council, to have a diverse per

spective allows for well rounded decisions.”

Binder said he’s excit ed to be part of a council that has a wide range of backgrounds, experi ences and diverse points of view

“I guess the voters looked at the individuals and saw them as individ uals, and not so much as a team, and the distinct faces and experiences and perspectives that were up there on that

stage is something that Delta has never seen, ” said Binder “It wasn’t about building a solid slate, it was really about building a group of peo ple that brought diverse points of view and I think it somehow resonated with Delta”

Saying they took noth ing for granted and had been working hard over the past several months to hear from residents, Binder noted people

appreciated being heard, another factor in the results at the polls

Boisvert agreed that having different voices is important when it comes to collaboration and decision making

“It’s not about a group that will toe the line It’s about bringing different viewpoints and we might not agree, ” said Boisvert.

AchievingforDeltatakessixofsevenschool boardtrusteeseats

The Delta school board is going to have a different look with four newcomers getting elected in last Saturday’s municipal election. New to the board are Ammen Dhillon, Masako Gooch, Nimmi Daula

and Joe Muego, joining re-elected trustees Val Windsor, Nick Kanakos and Erica Beard.

The Achieving for Delta slate got a clean sweep on council and almost did the same in the race for school board, taking six of seven seats

Kanakos is the lone

elected Delta trustee not on the Achieving for Delta slate, having run with incumbent Bruce Reid who wasn’t re elected.

Saying political organizations had not run for Delta school board positions until the 2018 election, Kanakos noted BC Elections rules when

it comes to who can donate and how much an individual candidate can spend will make it even tougher for independents.

“It makes it far more difficult for the average independent candidate to even make a dent and I think this election was reflective of that Unless

you have a lot of pretty big backing behind you, you can’t really run an effective campaign, whereas a larger cam paign can afford to run the ads and have more door to door canvass ing, mail outs, flyers and those kind of things You’re just caught in the constraints of the financ ing,” said Kanakos

When it comes to the business of the school board, however, it won’t matter if one political organization has the most seats because the only focus is student learning, he said

“Most of your decisions are based on what information senior staff has provided you The decisions are pretty clear-cut and the decisions are based on what is the funding before us and what programs can we offer,” he said.

Kanakos added that the new board has a good mix of people

“It’s going to be a great four years It’s a great group of people who were elected They all bring their own values to education. What I

brought was my experience and they’ll bring experience in other areas That’s how a board works. You have a whole team together for the best interests of the kids,” he added.

Windsor, who was pre viously an independent before joining Achieving for Delta this election, agreed that it’s not about politics, but making the best decisions for stu dents and improving out comes in the classroom She said she’s thrilled to have such a diverse mix comprising the new board.

“This team looks like Delta now. We have diversity of gender and culture and ethnicity and people with some pretty incredible backgrounds I feel they will serve the school board, and certainly the students in Delta, very well,” she said.

Windsor added both council members and school trustees are work ing for the same purpose, and that having an even better relationship with the city should benefit the school district

Election returns

Editor’sNote

IAN JACQUES

So another municipal election is in the books in Delta

The Achieving for Delta team, led by now two term Mayor George Harvie virtu ally swept election night winning all six council seats and six of seven school board seats.

For the first time in Delta’s 143 year history, residents elected the first peo ple of colour to council as Jennifer Johal and Jessie Dosanjh were elected

This is a historic moment for our community and one that we all should be proud to be a part of

Online comments and one letter to the editor received this week are not as pleased with the outcome, however The comments express concern about the election of the Achieving for Delta team.

Achieving for Delta earned this elec tion victory with a lot of hard work and organization They ran a strong campaign that started a year ago with Harvie announcing he would be seek ing re election and at the end of May, announcing his team of candidates for council and school board

In the 2018 municipal election cam paign there were three slates battling for mayor and council, so this year was nothing new in terms of slate politics

And whether you like slates or not, they are a reality of the election pro cess. Just look at all of the city by city results across the province and you will see slate politics played a role in every result

And while I applaud all of the inde pendent candidates who came forward, many of them missed opportunities to possibly break through

Where were these candidates all summer? No one stepped forward until the final week of the nomination period with some putting in their nomination papers mere hours before the deadline Were any of these independent candi dates serious about this? Some didn’t bother to show up at all candidates meetings We had to chase many candi dates just to get simple bio information and a photo to share information with our readers That’s unacceptable when you should be doing everything pos sible to get out there in front of voters, especially when you know you have an uphill battle to face

1967 scouting group and fire truck

Election winds bring change throughout the province

It seems as though there was a tremendous amount of voters that were not pleased with the way things were going with incumbent mayors and councillors across the province in election 2022 Thirty seven incumbent may ors were shown the door by dissatisfied voters in British Columbia

In Metro Vancouver, seven new mayors defeated incum bents, 10 sitting mayors were re elected and four new mayors were elected where incumbents did not run

Of note in Metro Vancouver was the absolute blowout of Kennedy Stewart. For the past couple of months pollsters and the media have been tell ing us that Vancouver was a dead heat and that it was any body’s race As it turns out, not so much Heavy hitters from the NDP, past and pres ent, went out on a limb semi late in the game to endorse Stewart This was in hindsight, probably a bad and awkward move particularly for leader ship hopeful David Eby.

Voters in Vancouver were

clearly unimpressed in the way in which crime, home lessness, housing and health care were handled by Stewart

Any thoughts about a snap election call for Eby have like ly been dashed. The winds, they are a changin’!

In Surrey, incumbent Doug McCallum was told to go bye bye by frustrated voters, mainly due to the RCMP/ metro policing debacle.

Although he conceded twice to Brenda Locke since Saturday night, it would appear that McCallum has changed his mind again and will be asking for a judicial recount

In our neck of the woods, it wasn’t really close, even from early on, as Mayor George Harvie and Achieving for Delta council candidates ran the table with incumbents Alicia Guichon and Dylan Kruger toping the polls

Achieving for Delta nearly ran the table on school board as well taking six of the seven positions with long time incumbent Nick Kanakos rounding out the trustee list

Some people think that such a mandate for mayor and council will not afford opportunity for serious debate on several pressing city issues. There is no guarantee that will be the case. In fact, if you look back on voting records from the past term amongst the Achieving slate, you will note that there were many instances where block voting did not occur

As Mayor Harvie noted in the Achieving for Delta victory speech, it is good news to see two of South Asian heritage on council. I am personally looking forward to a produc tive four years and a united City of Delta

This means there is no opposition for that party which troubles me in itself

To have only three out of 10 people voting leaves me to believe that the other seven don’t care, were too busy or some other excuse This certainly doesn’t allow

them to be critical of the results nor of the three out of 10 that actually voted.

I also note that prior to the election, the results for the whole province were less than 30 per cent turnout That’s abysmal in our so called democracy!

Pick up your discarded kites and lines

Editor:

With the continuing warm spell it’s wonder ful to see people out on the Boundary Bay dike engaging in their favorite pastimes whether it’s riding, biking, walk ing or crossing into the foreshore for seasonal hunting.

However, lately, as a hunter, I’ve become more aware of kite fly ers who apparently like to fly long lines of balsa and paper kites that can

stretch almost 300 to 500 yards

While I can appreci ate the feat of trying to keep a kite flying that distance, I am concerned that these flyers do not appear to be picking up their fallen kites and often leave long lines of string. While the kites and wood may eventu ally deteriorate, I have seen these lines criss crossing the shore for months that, in addition to being unsightly, just

add to the trash that are left to responsible trail and foreshore users to clean up

I urge those of you who are engaged in this hobby to take a day or two out of each month to put on some boots and pull up your lines and your discarded kites. Similarly, I ask all my fel low hunters to continue picking up their ejected hulls and personal trash on their way out

Remembering Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation (DHCH Foundation) as part of your estate planning builds a strong and vibrant future

After supporting your loved ones, you can choose to leave a gift in your Will that can help transform healthcare in Delta for future generations. Estate gifts have a powerful impact on our local hospital and can create a meaningful legacy in our community

Legacy donors such as Stu & Anne Kirkland have made the decision to include DHCH Foundation in their Will

“We want to take this opportunity to thank Delta Hospital, through a gift in our Will, for the incredible patient care they have provided to our family over the years,” says the Kirklands. “We have benefited greatly from having such a wonderful hospital in Ladner that is an essential part of our community and provides us with access to high quality healthcare facilities and personnel, locally ” Making a bequest in your Will is a wonderful opportunity to support the Delta Hospital Campus of Care, without giving up assets during your lifetime

A gift in your Will can also have significant tax savings for your estate. When you make a gift through your Will a charitable tax receipt is issued to your estate which can help to reduce or eliminate your taxes

To find out more about leaving a gift in your Will, contact the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation office at 604 940 9695, email jodi.stokes@dhchfoundation.ca or visit willpower.ca/charities/dhchfoundation

Tsawwassenneigboursdemand biggerplanbeforedogenclosure

The planning for improvements to the dog off-leash area at Pebble Hill Park have been ongoing for some time and city staff don’t believe it’s necessary to pause now to develop a bigger neighbourhood plan.

That was a staff response to recent letters of complaint by area residents regarding the City of Delta’s plan to build an enclosure and other improvements

The memo notes that through community consultation processes in 2021 and 2022, residents had opportunities to put forward their points, including regarding the design and other amenities to compliment the off-leash enclosure

At the conclusion of this year ’ s community consultation, more than 100 responses were received

“While we received a variety of different feedback from community members and residents, staff are working to incorporate changes to the design that had high levels of support based on community input,” the memo states

The staff response also notes the city has been providing information to BC Hydro because BC Hydro has a registered right of way through a relevant portion of the park While BC Hydro has provided approval of the concept, additional technical information was requested. BC Hydro is currently reviewing details of the proposed design.

“Once Delta has received the comments from BC Hydro, we will provide an update to council regarding any revisions to the proposed design, and recommendations for next steps in the process, ” the memo notes

The staff response goes on to state, “Through the various community engagement initiatives undertaken as part of the planned park improvements, some residents raised the desire for the city to develop a Pebble Hill Park Neighbourhood Plan. However, no commitment was made by staff to initiate this type of neighbourhood plan.”

The Pebble Hill Park off-leash enclosure is among a list of designat ed Delta parks and recreation projects for 2022.

Delta council recently gave final approval for a new enclosed off-leash dog area at Paterson Park

Bat-friendly landscaping can help bats at Halloween

As Halloween approaches, images of scary bats become com monplace. This is the perfect time of year to counter bat myths and do something to help bats, by taking part in International Bat Week (Oct. 24 to 31).

Bat Week is all about appreciating these amaz ing animals and their benefits, including eating insects, pollinating flow ers, and spreading seeds and nutrients.

This Bat Week, consid er bat friendly gardening to help bats

Planting native trees, shrubs, or flowers in your yard, as well as light coloured and night blooming flowers, will support the insects that our B C bats like to eat Controlling invasive plant species also helps insects and bats thrive, so consider a weed pull in your yard, laneway, or local park or wetland

You can find more infor mation on bat friendly gardening through the Community Bat Program’s Bat friendly Communities Guide at www bcbats ca

Check out the South Coast Bat Conservation’s Facebook page to read more about Bat Week and for a listing of local events, www facebook com/SouthCoastBAT/.

“Bats in B C help con trol agricultural and for est pests, as well as mos quitoes in our yards but

Bat Week is Oct. 24 to 31

now bats need our help,” said Danielle Dagenais, regional coordinator for the Metro Vancouver Squamish Community Bat Project. “Providing safe and healthy habitat for bats has always been important, since over half the species in this province are considered at risk With the continu ing spread of White nose Syndrome in Washington State, bat conservation is more important than ever as we expect to see impacts in B C in the near future.”

Bat Week also marks the time of year when bats disappear from our neighbourhoods, until the return of warmer weather in spring As insect eaters, B C bats must leave their summer roost sites and migrate or hibernate to survive the winter. This absence means that this is the time of year to do home renovations that you have delayed due to bat presence You can clean out and repair a bat box, or do bat friendly exclu sion work, without dis turbing or injuring bats

In partnership with the BC Ministry of Environment, and funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Forest Enhancement Society of BC, Habitat Stewardship Program, the BC Community Bat Program provides information and promotes local steward

Removing invasive plants such as burdock allows native plants to thrive and reduces hazards for bats.

Pray for our city

I recently started play ing video games with my son, and I am trying to be intentional about how I teach him to play Even though this is my son ’ s first time playing video games, I don’t just let him win, not only because I’m a fierce competitor myself, but also because I want him to learn how to lose graciously

Also, when he wins a game, I expect my son to be humble in his victory Unfortunately, I often see that even grownups aren’t so good at losing or winning graciously I want my son to grow up being competitive and trying his best, but when the results are in and he doesn’t win the game, I want him to congratulate the winners and acknowl edge their victory.

With the results of the municipal elec tion, some Deltans celebrated and others

Minister’s Minute PAUL PARK

expressed disappoint ment. However, the bible claims that these leaders “have been instituted by God” (Rom 13:1) I recognize that some of you are disappointed, but your disappointment shouldn’t cause you to be unsupportive of the leaders. I know that some of you are ecstatic, but you should accept vic tory humbly; recognizing that the goal isn’t to beat

others but for us to work together for the good of our city

The bible teaches that the best response is to pray for our city. We should “seek the welfare of the city” in which we live “and pray to the Lord on its behalf” because “in its welfare [we] will find [our] welfare” (Jer 29:7)

I love how logical this verse is The best way forward is to pray for our city and pray that the elected leaders do the best job possible We ought to desire the wel fare of our city because we will find our own wel fare in it

The most logical response for any respon sible citizen of our city is to wish that the leaders do a great job and serve our city well. However, the bible says that we don’t have to just wish; we can do much better We can pray for them.

Inaugural Cheers for Fears fundraiser among many “spooky” events in the city

After limited activi ties the past two years due to the pandemic, Halloween fun is back in a big way with a number of events throughout Delta including an inau gural fundraiser to sup port KinVillage

The South Delta Community Impact Committee (SDCIC) presents Cheers for Fears on Saturday, Oct 29 at the KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen The red car pet Halloween bash will donate 100 percent of all proceeds to the redevel opment and expansion of KinVillage housing and care facilities

Created to target the early millennials of South Delta, ‘Cheers for Fears’ aims to break the stigma around senior care by highlighting the impor tance of direct support to those golden aged in the community.

“We are so grateful for organizations like the South Delta Community Impact Committee for supporting our much needed redevelopment project and contribut ing to the health and well being of our current and future residents,” says Dan Levitt, CEO of KinVillage

‘Cheers for Fears’ aims to elevate the typical fundraiser experience with special attractions that include draft beer courtesy of Britannia Brewing, charcuterie by Picnic Platters, gourmet canapés by Chef Adrian of Buenos Dias Cafe, a billiard zone, and even an exclusive cigar and scotch tasting lounge

In addition, a curated silent auction, 50/50 draw and door prize give aways will be unveiled

throughout the evening while guests dance the night away to the party sounds of DJ Gab

DO YOU SUFFER FROM DRY EYES?

Dry eye disease is a chronic condition, resulting from too few tears, or poor quality tears, causing a lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the eye surface

You may experience discomfort, burning, stinging or itchiness in or around your eye, a sandy or gritty feeling It may also cause blurred vision, eye fatigue, red eyes, watery eyes, sensitivity to light, discomfort with contact lens wear or eye irritation from wind, smoke, pollution or air conditioning.

Dry eye can be caused by a number of factors such as aging, certain medications, hormonal changes, autoimmune and chronic diseases,

INMODE Lumecca Intense Pulse Light treatment (IPL) works to control the inflammatory process IPL treats ocular rosacea, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, and Inflammatory dry eye IPL treatment involves flashes of light to the skin around the eyelids and face. IPL also kills bacteria and Demodex on the surface of the eyelids. This leads to increased comfort of the eyes, and less dryness.

I know that the demand for these items has increased dramatically in the past month, but not so much in prices. Queen Elizabeth II banknotes have been going up in value for many years. People have been coming in for years buying all different countries with the Queen’s portrait. We have most countries which issued notes with the Queen’s portrait still on stock. Stamps with the Queen have been selling well this month but not popular over the last few years. We have many stamps with her portrait from the 1953 Coronation, 1972 25th Wedding anniversary 1977 Silver Jubilee and 2012 Diamond Jubilee in stock. You are not alone. Many people have fears around dental appointments, resulting from previous bad experiences or just deep seated irrational fears. Ladner school part of ultra competitive South Fraser Premier League

After a near miss of a provincial berth a year ago, the Delta Pacers senior boys volleyball team is poised to be back in familiar territory later this fall in Kelowna

It was in the early 1990s when the Ladner school became a regular participant in the B.C. showcase tournament under longtime teacher and Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductee Barb Salt.

Since her retirement, the torch has been passed on mainly to her former players including Andrew Robson. He now has a prominent role at DSS as a full time teacher and coach of both the senior and Grade 8 boys teams He also has added the responsibility of athletic director

Robson would like nothing more than to add a long overdue B C School Sports provincial champion banner to the

walls of the DSS West Gym It has eluded the boys volleyball program thus far, but momentum is building.

Delta currently sits sixth in the latest B.C. AAA rankings released this week and was edged in a five set thriller by cross town rival and No. 4 ranked Seaquam in South Fraser Premier League play two weeks ago

The team to beat in the region is the No 2 ranked McMath Wildcats.

Delta fell in four hard fought sets back on Sept 26 and could see the

Richmond school again at next month’s South Fraser Championships that will determine berths to the provincial “AAA” championships, hosted by Kelowna Secondary. No 7 Elgin Park and No 9 Steveston London should also be right in the mix in a highly competi tive zone.

“It’s kind of (McMath’s) to lose this year. They are just a very skilled team,” said Robson. “I think in terms of across the province, I think it’s Kelowna as No 1 by far and McMath at No 2 by far After that, there’s

probably 10 to 12 teams in that No 3 through No 14 area that on any given day anything can hap pen. ”

For years, the Pacers had to deal mostly with strong Surrey teams in the old Fraser Valley zone Now, their main competitors are in Richmond with the new re configured South Fraser Region.

“Surrey is still there with a team like Elgin, but Earl Marriott has gone from being a peren nial powerhouse to not even playing in tier one anymore, ” added Robson

“In the past couple years, Richmond schools have made quite the push and we ’ re hanging around with them.”

With solid starts to the Grade 8 and junior teams’ seasons as well, the Pacers are positioned well for the years ahead

“I haven’t been around forever, but I have a hard time envisioning the pro gram ever being in a bet ter place Robson added “I’ve got some really good (alumni) people helping me out this year and they deserve all the credit It’s making my life easier and I’m grateful for that”

Sun Devils hitting stretch run of field hockey season

The South Delta Sun Devils remain a work in progress as the high school field hockey season hits the homestretch.

Under the guidance of long time community volunteer coach Neil McLennan, the Tsawwassen school has been a perennial provincial contender with several podium finishes

This time, McLennan is work ing with mostly multi sport athletes that have seen their time on the field hockey pitch disrupted over the past couple of seasons due to the pan demic

“It’s been up and down so far We have a lot of new players and a lot that are inexperienced, so we are still learning how to play together. Against some teams that are really good, we will have a good patch of play then a slow patch and those can hurt you quite significantly,” McLennan explained.

On Tuesday (Oct 11), the Sun Devils breezed to a 6 0 win over Richmond’s McMath Wildcats at Winskill Park, but repeating as South Fraser Zone champions will be anything but a formality

South Delta earlier dropped games to unbeaten Tamanawis (2 0) and second place Panorama Ridge (4 3) The two day zone playoffs get underway Oct 27

“Quite a few of the South Fraser teams have one or two (provincial class) players where we have to learn how to handle the teams that have those threats. We will give up a pen alty corner and the next thing we know it is in the back of the net As the chips come down here (on the season) hopefully we can tidy those things up, ” McLennan added

The B C AAA Championships are being host ed by Kelowna next month but the tournament is expected to be moved to Tamanawis Park in Surrey to play on turf fields

Brian Elsey and Harry Ratchford were our Realtors for our first home purchase last year We felt as though they continually went above and beyond in advocating for us in an incredibly competitive market They were both enthusiastic and empathetic, recognizing that this was a sometimes overwhelming process. We really appreciated their patience in educating us in the real estate process, both from a buying, selling and investment standpoint. We are so happy with our new home, and feel confident that it is a great place for us now and will remain a great investment in the future. We were so grateful to them for being so honest and proactive about our options throughout our search. Their referral network also took huge pressure off of us, as I did not have to research mortgage brokers or inspectors, saving us time and stress when it really counted Brian and Harry have taken care of us every step of the way Thank you Brian and Harry!!

JONES, Michelle Anne August 22, 1962 October 10, 2022

It is with great sorrow and everlasting love that we mourn the passing of Michelle Jones, who passed away peacefully on October 10, 2022, at the age of 60 years

Michelle is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Gordon; their two children, Jessica and Wesley; her mother, Marie; sister Nicolle; as well as numerous extended family members She will also affectionately be remembered as a warm hearted friend to many, especially her co workers at Delta Gymnastics Society and fellow Wednesday afternoon coffee shop patrons.

She was predeceased by her loving brothers, Paul and Mark, and her father, Max.

Michelle was born in Toronto on August 22, 1962, and grew up taking care of her younger siblings while her mom worked as a nurse. She met the love of her life, Gordon, at McMaster University while adventuring with her childhood best friends, Donna and Angeline, and graduating with a BA degree in Urban Geography and Political Science. She eventually married Gordon and moved out west after working on her family’s sheep station in rural Queensland, Australia

Throughout the years, Michelle was able to live out many of her passions. She travelled the world with her husband, shared her creativity and love of horseback riding with her daughter, and her passion for gymnastics and early childhood development with her son. Michelle spent 25 years focused on developing the Active Start program at Delta Gymnastics where she was able to impact many people within the community. Her family, friends, and those she coached and worked with, were rewarded with lifelong lessons in the power of positivity and an optimistic attitude.

A celebration of life will be held at Beach Grove Golf Club on Sunday, October 23, at 1:00 pm.

To honour Michelle’s spirit of selflessness, in lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to the Irene Thomas Hospice or Delta Gymnastics Society.

The Jones and Mountjoy family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Surrey Memorial Hospital and the Irene Thomas Hospice for their care and compassion.
