Halloween night of horrors for police and fire

Teen mob engages in wild fireworks fight in Tsawwassen IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

It was a night of chaos for Delta Police in Tsawwassen on Monday. That’s how DPD public affairs manager A/Insp. James Sandberg described a serious Halloween night incident at South Delta Secondary and Dennison Park. Sandberg said an estimated 400 youths engaged in a wild fireworks fight that resulted in several injuries to the participants as well as officers. He said police have created a portal on its website where the public can upload any digital information: https://dpd. ca.evidence.com/axon/citizen/ public/22-24806. “It was mob mentality where regular responsibility and inhibitions fell away. It was clearly a deliberate gathering to damage property, cause disruption and impact public safety,” said Sandberg. “We have several injuries including a female youth who had their jacket catch on fire and she has serious burn injuries to her shoulder. We had attempts to draw officers out and then target them with fireworks, so deliberate attempts to cause injury.” He said two officers have filed WorkSafe BC claims as a

of small groups and small amounts of fireworks. 2022 presented differently. Our officers observed organized, deliberate attempts to do damage and cause disruption.” Dubord said the DPD is working with its partners from

the Delta School District and the City of Delta to further investigate this incident. Sandberg said parents have to take a lot more responsibility. “Parents are also part of the concern because we saw parents dropping their kids off

at the park to join in,” he said. “They are enabling this. This was four hours of sustained fireworks, so where are these kids getting these fireworks?” Fire Chief Guy McIntuck also expressed concerns about the night’s activities. He said there were a number of reported calls, which included five garbage can fires and one hedge fire that almost resulted in several house fires. “We were just lucky that the home owners were able to get their garden hoses on the hedge before we got there, but that could have resulted in something much worse,” he said. “That was a direct result of kids shooting fireworks into that hedge.” McIntuck said there is a fireworks ban in place in Delta, which the majority of people comply with, but some do not. “The biggest challenge we have is the majority of municipalities in Metro Vancouver ban the sale and use of fireworks without a permit, but there are certain ones that still allow it, so you can purchase fireworks in a city close to Delta and transport them in,” he said. “I know the city brought in extra staffing for this issue, but they can’t be everywhere where all the problems were happening. Ottawa commits $34.7 million to Ladner housing project

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A housing project in Ladner, that will provide 130 below-market rental homes for independent seniors and individuals living with intellectual disabilities, has received a major contribution from Ottawa. Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen was in town Friday morning to announce the Government of Canada is contributing $34.7 million to Evergreen Court. Located at 4625 Evergreen Lane and now under construction, the project is a partnership between the Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the Province of BC, through BC Housing, the City of Delta, and Affordable Housing Societies. The homes include 38 accessible and 92 adaptable units for individuals who may have mobility challenges. It will be owned and operated by the Affordable Housing Societies. The development will feature a common amenity space, parking, laundry, exterior gardens and landscaping. Construction is expected to be complete in winter 2024 and rental rates will be confirmed closer to completion. “Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. That is why our government is pleased to provide funding support to create 130 safe, affordable and accessible rental housing to seniors and individuals with intellectual disabilities right here in Delta,” said Hussen. “By investing in affordable housing, we are creating communities that are safe, inclusive and welcoming to all. This is another example of our government’s National Housing Strategy at work.” “This investment from the Government of Canada’s National Housing Co-Investment Fund is improving the quality of life for seniors and persons with dis-

abilities and has contributed to the social well-being for all of Delta. When people have a secure and stable home, they gain the confidence they need to succeed and fulfill their potential,” added Delta MP and Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion Carla Qualtrough who also attended Friday’s announcement. The Province is contributing approximately $7.3 million to the project from the Building BC: Community Housing Fund for the project. Affordable Housing Societies is contributing the land, valued at $12.4 million plus additional equity of $7.6 million and will develop, own and operate the project. The City of Delta is contributing $790,000 through waiver fees and Metro Vancouver is waiving $458,000 in development cost charges. The project was approved by the City of Delta back in July. “Increasing housing options for Delta’s seniors and individuals with varying abilities is critical in supporting our vulnerable com-

munities. I want to thank the Delta Housing Be Mine Society, the Affordable Housing Societies, and all the levels of government and government agencies who worked together to ensure we prioritized the building of the Evergreen Court housing project,” said Delta Coun. Dylan Kruger. Affordable Housing Societies CEO Stephen Bennett says the Evergreen Court is part of an overall goal working towards the end of the decade. “The Affordable Housing Societies is very pleased to be furthering its mission to ‘provide quality, affordable rental homes so that families and individuals can thrive’ through the provision of 130 new rental homes on Evergreen Lane in Ladner,” he said. “These new homes are part of our Society’s goal to add 1400 new affordable rental homes to our portfolio by 2030. This incredible project has brought together partners from three levels of government, and when complete will deliver rental units that will be affordable for seniors and individuals with intellectual disabilities on a broad range of income levels.”

Second fake firearm found after incident at Tsawwassen mall PHIL MELNYCHUK

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

If someone waves around or points a handgun or rifle, whether it’s a clever look-alike or the real thing, people can expect the same response from Delta Police. “Until we know otherwise, we treat all firearms as if they’re real. It’s about public safety. It’s about officer safety. It’s about the person’s safety who may be in possession of an imitation firearm,” said A/Insp. James Sandberg. Replica or airsoft firearms that shoot pellets or BBs appear so much like a real weapons it’s often impossible to tell which from which until a gun is being unloaded or dismantled. “Quite often, they’re made of the same material. They’re weighted the same. They’re made to look identical,” Sandberg said.

On Oct. 20, Delta police answered a second call in recent weeks, this time near Tsawwassen Commons shopping centre, about a man pointing a firearm. A replica handgun was found at the scene. Police have not made any further announcements about that incident. That followed a separate, earlier Oct.11 arrest after seven people called police about a man with what seemed to be a handgun trying to stop traffic on 16th Avenue and 58th Street in Tsawwassen. According to a police news release, a replica handgun was recovered at the arrest scene. Zachery Frederick Rider, 42, has been charged with carrying, using or threatening to use a weapon or an imitation weapon; use of an imitation firearm while committing assault; pos-

sessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose; uttering threats and obstructing a police officer. He appeared in Surrey provincial court last week. Sandberg said that speaking anecdotally, the appearance of fake firearms is not so much a growing trend but rather just part of a general increase in the prevalence of firearms. Some airsoft gun companies put an orange ring at the end of the muzzle to show that it’s not a real gun and is just a toy. But now some firearms companies are making real guns in different colours. “What do we believe? Do we believe it’s a toy firearm or do we believe it’s a real firearm?” asked Sandberg. Officers train with public and officer safety in mind and they’re going to treat it as a real firearm until they know other-

wise, he added. “For all intents and purposes, it’s designed by the manufacturer to look as real as possible, as identical to a main model

firearm that’s out there already.” Sandberg said if people are using replica guns safely, on their property, then there’s no offence.

“But if they’re carrying it for intimidation purposes or protection then potentially you have Criminal Code offences you could investigate.”

“I really enjoy fireworks and feel they are a great source of entertainment if used responsibly, but unfortunately we have some people who continue to use them irresponsibly. From a safety perspective, it is just pure luck that no one was seriously injured last night.” He said parents have a responsibility to have a better handle on their children’s behaviour. “It’s not everyone, but there are always going to be some who will not comply with our bylaws and use this as an opportunity to vandalize, set fires and assault people,” he added. Mayor George Harvie said council will be meeting with the school board, police and fire for a full debrief on the night’s activities. “Extremely disappointed. I thought we were much more mature as a community,” said Harvie. “I hope that the parents of the students involved know what is going on because this is not a police problem, it is a family problem. This is the worst we have ever had. “These were not traditional fireworks…it was like concussion bombs going off. And it was just not Delta, it was everywhere.” Harvie said he will raise this issue at the next meeting of the Metro Vancouver board. “It is a Metro thing, but it really starts at home here in Delta,” he said. People are feeling the effects of higher rents, gasoline and food and it’s pushing them to the local food bank. In the last few months, Joe Van Essen coordinator at the South Delta Food Bank, has seen more people picking up food hampers every Wednesday from the food bank’s location at Lighthouse Church. “I would definitely say the last year, we’ve seen an increase,” he said Friday. According to Food Banks Canada, the number of visits to food banks across Canada has jumped by 35 per cent when March 2022 (1.5 million visits) are compared to March 2019. When March 2021 is compared to March 2022, it’s a 15-per-cent increase. Van Essen estimates that in South Delta, there has been a 20-per-cent increase in demand in the last year. “Food and rent, it’s obvious. People who don’t make that much money, just can’t make ends meet so they end up going to the food bank, picking up a few bags of food to help out,” Van Essen said. He said greater demand is across the board but notes he sees Ukrainian women, who’ve fled the Russian

invasion of their country, and Mexicans as well. Four years ago at the South Delta Food Bank, before the pandemic, the food bank fed between 75 and 80 families a week. That dropped during COVID19 restrictions, but has now climbed to more than100 families a week, he said. “But it’s only the last two months that it’s really gone up.” The food bank always welcomes donations but cash is king. Asking for donations of particular items can lead to the food bank being overwhelmed. Instead, cash donations allows the food bank to buy food that is needed and at discounted prices. “I’d rather get swamped in money, then I can buy what I want. And you can also buy the

nutritious stuff like fresh vegetables and meat, and all that good stuff, all the better stuff.” Food Banks Canada says the percentage of working people needing food has jumped to 14 per cent, from 12.5 per cent in 2021. And the share of seniors accessing food banks has climbed to 8.9 per cent, from 6.8 per cent before the pandemic. As well, almost half of food bank recipients are on income assistance. But those benefits “have rapidly eroded,” compared to general inflation. Single-person households, account for 45 per cent of food bank clients, says Food Banks Canada. “Our community has always been good supporting us,” Van Essen said.

Thanks to a donation from TB Vets, Delta Hospital is receiving a major donation to purchase new equipment.

Delta Hospital receives $15,000 for a new GlideScope

TB Vets Charitable Foundation provides respiratory care funding Thirty hospitals are able to buy new respiratory equipment this year with the support of donors to the TB Vets Charitable Foundation. The grant to Delta Hospital is part of nearly $1-million in funding provided by TB Vets to hospitals in British Columbia and Northwest Territories. The new Glidescope will replace the current model that is past its useful life. A GlideScope is the most comprehensive and flexible airway visualization system for video laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy and dual-view airway procedures. Designed around an HD, touchscreen

monitor and comprehensive workstation, GlideScope Core delivers elevated visibility during intubation, which might be needed in case of congestive heart failure, trauma, anaphylactic shock, or endoscopy procedures, to name a few. Intubation is used on a patient when someone cannot breathe on their own or has stopped breathing. The video technology of the Glidescope allows physicians or respiratory therapists to visualize the larynx and create a direct line of sight to the airway. “We are proud to be able to help hospitals buy new equipment that will support our medical frontline heroes. We

would not be able to achieve these amazing results without our donors, who generously contribute to our Key Tag program year after year,” says Kandys Merola, CEO of TB Vets. “We’ve just launched this year’s Key Tag fundraising campaign, and I encourage everyone to support it, no matter how big or small the gift might be. The need for respiratory equipment remains acute, whether it’s for newborns, emergency situations, or patients suffering from respiratory conditions; and it’s only through our joint efforts that we can ensure the best possible care for every patient.” -Submitted by TB Vets

Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES

I

nstead of talking about the wonderful displays, great costumes and children trick or treating, we are talking about a horrible incident in Tsawwassen this Halloween. In a story that the Optimist broke on Tuesday night, Delta Police, Delta Fire and City officials are at a loss for words after more than 400 youth descended upon Dennison Park for a wild night of boorish behaviour. A fireworks fight that went on for hours lead to assaults, vandalism, destroyed property and injuries to youth and two police officers. A video that Delta Police shared with us on Tuesday is shocking. In an early video clip one teen, dressed in a white sweatshirt, is seen dodging the fireworks sent flying at his head. One narrowly missed him. I can only imagine the outcome if it would have hit him. One young girl is not so lucky. Police say a firework burned through her jacket and she is left with a huge burn and scarring to her upper shoulder. You can see a picture of the damage in today’s print edition. All our first responders and the mayor are appalled at the events of Monday night. Police are asking for residents to upload information, video or photos to a link on their website in the hopes of identifying the main culprits, although when you have 400-plus kids at night acting with a mob mentality, good luck trying to pin down the major offenders. The community seems to be as outraged as evident by comments on social media, although, there are some residents – parents in fact – who are cheering on the youth who did this and celebrating what they accomplished. That is as despicable as the youth who thought this kind of behaviour was okay. We clearly have a problem here and I’m struggling to find the answers as to why some think this is the proper way to act. Mayor George Harvie said it best that this is “just not a police problem, but a parent problem.” I couldn’t agree more.

Take a walk with a four-year-old and you will fall in love with home “Lets go to the park,” I suggest to my nieces’ four-yearold daughter. “Yeah, the park, the park,” Kaia shrieks. “Hold my hand,” I say. We walk three doors down and there’s a Super Mario Halloween display in my neighbour’s yard. Luigi and Mario sit in tiny cars. It’s a feast for the eyes. Two bowls are set out in the driveway, one with treats and another with toys in plastic bags. Kaia chooses carefully. A yellow ring, a bracelet, a toy car and Smarties. “Let’s get going,” I say. A block away, beside a bench, there’s a tiny fairy sitting in a hole in a log. The fairy has been there since the spring and it never moves. Kaia gives it a kiss. Half a block away, perched on some driftwood, there’s a treasure box wrapped in plastic with a note – ‘Take one, next time leave one.’ Kaia opens the box wide eyed. She chooses a Halloween note pad and pencil.

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

“Can I take this home?” she asks. “Yes”, I say, “And next time we will leave something.” We walk by a cafe where scarecrows and pumpkins grin at us. Seniors say hi and smile, dogs sniff the pavement. We turn the corner and there’s the park. It’s Friday afternoon, so it’s busy. There’s a group of Mums and Dads enjoying drinks huddled around a picnic table. About 20 kids are digging holes, chasing each other, crying, asking to go to the bathroom and having a ball.

Kaia giggles as she swings, slides, climbs and we give each other the bumps on the see saw. At the park there’s a share a book box sponsored by the Tsawwassen Rotary Club. I pass her books to look through, she decides on Thomas the Tank Engine. The sun is setting and it’s time to go home. She doesn’t want to leave, but the promise of using a sharpener for the Halloween pencil is enticing. At home I take off her pink rubber boots and I feel a rush of gratitude for the people who made that extraordinary little walk to the park magical. These gestures of community building are based on kindness, and must not be taken for granted. Things cost more, and people are lonely, so spread a little kindness, and imagine what you can do to make a walk in your neighbourhood memorable. Construction sites need better traffic control Editor: How many other drivers have experienced a growing number of building sites that employ untrained individuals, who are tasked with directing traffic in and around construction sites? With the increasing number of construction sites in every area of Delta, it is no longer good enough just to have just any ill equipped (and untrained) construction workers wade into traffic and expect drivers to understand their cryptic attempts to direct traffic. It puts everyone’s safety at risk. Most established British Columbia corporations (ie: BC Hydro, The City of Delta and specifically Professional Traffic Control companies) do an outstanding

job of providing safe and professional traffic control while working on streets in Delta. However, it is exclusively the small operations who are trying to cut corners just to save a few dollars (by not supplying properly equipped and trained personnel) who are the ones that are putting drivers at risk. Surely a minimum standard needs to be applied to any construction site that blocks traffic and should require construction sites to provide properly trained and equipped personnel. Perhaps even going as far as requiring a permit issued by the municipality before allowing any company to block or impede traffic. At the very least, WorkSafe British Columbia requires that traffic con-

trol individuals wear high visibility safety vests and headgear. They must be provided with appropriate traffic paddles and have an understanding and the required training so as to provide drivers with directions and signals that can be clearly understood. Proper road signage and warnings to drivers of potential hazards are also required. Further details of requirements regarding traffic control, can be found at: OHS Regulation Part 18: Traffic Control Clowns have no place directing traffic on the roads of Delta and the police have much more important tasks to attend to than supervising work site traffic disruptions that should be handled by properly trained and equipped personnel. P. Walters

So much for that beautiful walk Editor: While out walking today in the beautiful blustery weather on the 12th Ave. dike, admiring the scenery, wildlife, listening to beautiful music and counting my blessings to have access to this wonderful area, I thought to myself how nice it was, and seemingly how much improved over time, that there was no dog poo polluting my long walk. My illusion, or delusion, was burst like a bubble or dandelion fluff

in the wind, upon my return walk. First one large pile of the offending substance on the north side of the dike walk, then another, then another, then another, and on it went. Clearly, judging by the identical large girth and amount of said poo, it is from the same large breed dog. Now, I’m not a dog poo scientist, but it doesn’t take a genius to spot a repeat offender. In my vivid imagination, I have visions of

collecting the considerable poo myself and dumping it on the ignorant individuals lawn, or around their vehicle, or even participating in poo flinging?...(hmmm...well, maybe not)...if I even knew who the offending party was. So, ignorant, obnoxious, self-entitled dog owner, if I should witness your apathetic, disrespectful and irresponsible behaviour, gird your loins. I’ve got my eye out for you. Laura Campbell

Another reason why Tsawwassen is a wonderful place to live Editor: I’m a senior citizen living in Tsawwassen and on Saturday, Oct. 22 was walking home carrying two paper bags of groceries. Both bags broke at the corner of 12th Ave and 53A St. As I was picking the items up, two drivers stopped at the corner

and helped me. The gentleman driver offered to drive me home and the lady driver gave me a more sturdy shopping bag, not wanting it returned. I thanked them for their kindness. What a nice community we live in. Roy Bilson

The latest numbers released last week from Statistics Canada highlight the gradual changing face of Delta. The city’s overall population has grown slowly compared to other communities, standing at 108,455 in the 2021 Census, up only 5,391 people from the 2016 Census. The proportion of the city’s population that are immigrants or visible minorities increased more substantially, however. Of the 107,510 residents surveyed under the category for visible minorities, 48,625 people identified themselves as a visible minority, up from 36,300 in the 2016 Census. South Asians made up the biggest segment at 27,990, up from 20,485 in the 2016 Census. The next biggest segment of visible minorities in the 2021 Census were Chinese at 9,660, up from 7,685 in the 2016 Census. They were followed in the 2021 Census by Filipinos at 3,700, up from 2,655 in the previous Census. Those listed as “not a visible minority” in Delta in 2021 stood at 58,645, down from 64,540 people in the 2016 Census. In Metro Vancouver, overall, the majority of residents now identify as a visible minority. Back in 2001, Delta’s population stood at just under 97,000. At that time, the “Canadian born” population of those surveyed was listed at 70,135, while the “foreign born” segment

The number of visible minorities in the City of Delta continues to climb, while the number of people who don’t identify themselves as a visible minority is decreasing. stood at 25,135. By the 2021 Census, the “non-immigrant” population stood at 67,960, which is down over 1,000 people from the 2016 Census. The “immigrant” population in 2021 in Delta was 35,555, up over 4,200 people from the 2016 Census. Statistics Canada notes “Immigrant” refers to a person who is, or who has ever been, a landed immigrant or permanent resident. Immigrants who have obtained Canadian citizenship by naturalization are included in this group. In the 2021 Census of Population, immigrants include those who were admitted to Canada on or prior to May 11, 2021. As far as the places of birth of Delta’s immigrant population in private households, Asia was tops in 2021 at 24,280, up from 19,175 in the 2016 Census. Within that Asia grouping, India was the top country at 12,375 people, up from 9,750 in the 2016 Census.

In 2021, the number of immigrants living in Delta who were born in Europe stood at 6,470, down 1,230 people from the 2016 Census. Delta’s Community Profile, written in 2017 using Census data from the previous year, noted 30 per cent of the population was made up of immigrants, while onethird of new immigrants could not speak either English of French. The profile also noted that the population growth in Delta was expected to continue at a modest rate, lower than other Metro Vancouver areas, with the exception of North Delta which will experience a faster growth rate. As far as cultural diversity, the profile noted it continues to increase in Delta. In 2016, newcomers made up 28.8 per cent of Delta’s population and that figure was expected to increase with most immigrants to Delta choosing to live in North Delta neighbourhoods.

The forum was attended by community stakeholders, self-advocates with intellectual disabilities, architects, developers, chief executive officers of organizations, as well as federal government, provincial government, and municipal government representatives. Attendees enjoyed engaging conversations at the cafe tables facilitated by table leaders who circulated to various tables with a question such as: • What are the current

challenges for people with an intellectual disability? (What does inclusivity mean?) • What do people need to succeed? • What are the current challenges for people related to finding housing in Delta? • How do you include for profit developers in providing affordable and inclusive housing? • What are the guiding principles that any solution must meet, for example ‘accessibility’? • What needs to be achieved or changed to create a more flexible building process? There were speech presentations from Shirley-Ann Reid Delta Housing Be Mine Society, Norman Van Eeden Petersman

Police get funding for more life-saving kits SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta Police are getting provincial funding for more Naloxone kits to help save lives by reversing drug overdoses. On the Delta Police Board’s Oct. 18 agenda was a recent letter to Chief Neil Dubord from Wayne Rideout, Assistant Deputy Minister and Director of Police Services, saying the department been approved for funding of just over $15,000 for the purchase of 120 Naloxone kits. That works out to 240 doses. “We will be in contact with the representatives identified from your department to obtain quarterly updates on naloxone-related purchases and use, as well as on any training complete,” said Rideout in the letter. “Your assistance in providing this information helps us

The City of Delta last year launched its Share Your Story initiative, a collaboration which includes DPD, the school district, Tsawwassen First Nation and Fraser Health Authority. The campaign aims to reduce stigma around substance use and empower individuals to share their stories. It builds on Delta’s End the Stigma campaign, which was launched in 2020. Meanwhile, the Delta Community Action Team is a community initiative established in 2018 by Deltassist and Fraser Health, and funded by the Province of BC, to develop a community response to the overdose crisis. The Take Home Naloxone program provides free personal kits to people at risk of opioid overdose or likely to witness and respond to overdoses.

to create a comprehensive picture of the public safety response to the opioid overdose emergency and support the Ministry in its efforts to determine future activities to target the opioid crisis.” The BC Coroners Service recently said that illicit drug toxicity is the leading cause of unnatural death in British Columbia and is second only to cancers in terms of years of life lost. At least 10,326 British Columbians have been lost to the illicit drug supply since the publichealth emergency for substance-related harms was first declared in April 2016. A social planning update report to Delta council earlier this year noted the pandemic has significantly worsened the opioid overdose crisis in Canada and the impacts are being felt locally.

Should the City of Delta ban the use of gas-powered lawnmowers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers and other yard maintenance equipment? A resident recently wrote to council asking for the city to enact a bylaw to phase out such equipment, saying it seems tool manufacturers have ignored public

perceptions about their tools and have done nothing to reduce the emissions or muffle the noise. A civic staff response notes the city is currently researching the subject including how it is being addressed in other communities. Other considerations include local government authority and jurisdiction. “It is noted that Metro Vancouver’s Clean Air Plan includes a

number of actions to reduce emissions from non-road equipment. Delta’s Electric Vehicle Strategy addresses small gas powered equipment and references an ‘electric first policy’ where new vehicles and small equipment will be replaced by electric alternatives when feasible. A number of pieces of battery powered equipment have been purchased to date,” the staff memo explained.

Almost $1.3 million from B.C. Rotarians goes to our communities

As communities in B.C. become stronger through facilities and services, often with a focus on those in need, through the work of Rotary clubs, funds for those projects often come from The Rotary Foundation. Communities around the world, where there is so often a desperate need for people just to survive, The Rotary Foundation provides funds to fight disease, help mothers and children survive, provide disaster relief, and improve lives often through our Rotary clubs worldwide. To support any and all of those causes, The Rotary Foundation is receiving US $1,292,288 from generous Rotary members, and some others, in British Columbia’s Rotary District 5040 of 48 clubs in Delta, Metro Vancouver and up the coast to Prince Rupert, with some from neighbouring Rotary District 5050. Delta student shows you can live your life with Crohn’s disease PHIL MELNYCHUK

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Just when a young person is set to spread his or her wings, inflammatory bowel disease can put those plans into pieces. Kacie Haberlin, 22, from Delta, went through that in the past couple years, but is back to living the life that she had before she was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. “It’s definitely been a journey, for sure,” Haberlin said. “It’s not stopped me.” Haberlin was diagnosed a few months after her dad passed away. The onset of the disease co-incided with her enrolment in UBC in the dental hygiene program as well as the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. With in-person gather-

ings banned and her university classes all online, Haberlin was able to get through her first year at home. “So that was a really a blessing in disguise, sort of,” she said. Suffering from IBD can hurt a person’s lifestyle with unpredictable bouts of abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue and the need to go to the bathroom. And she’s still in the process of learning about her body and her disease and is still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t. According to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, this country has one of the highest rates of inflammatory bowel disease. But that’s because it’s diagnosed more often, Haberlin said. “A lot of people know somebody

that has Crohn’s or colitis.” She advises people who are suffering to talk to others who are going through the same thing. “If you have Crohn’s and colitis, just keep up with the medication and keep trying different ways that can help manage the symptoms, and definitely reach out to other people who have the disease because talking with other people who have the disease definitely helps a lot, even though it can be scary or challenging at first,” she said. Haberlin is this year’s Vancouver honourary chair for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada for the Gutsy Walk, which was held in August. She’s now heading into her third year at

UBC, a task which has been made easier with a $5,000 scholarship from AbbVie Canada. That will pay for about half of this semester’s tuition. Haberlin said everyone’s inflammatory bowl disease is different and everyone can respond differently to medication. And for some, it takes years to find a medication that works. But for her, monthly IV infusions of medication into her bloodstream keeps the inflammation at bay and allows her to live a normal life. “So, I’m really lucky in the way that I found the medication that works for me, but it’s hard for some people,” she said, adding the disease can show up anywhere in the gastro-intestinal tract.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Kacie Haberlin She hopes her disease will remain stable, where it is, and not expand to another part of her body. “So, I’ll be on medication for the rest of my life.” Affecting one-in-140

(300,000) Canadians, Crohn’s and colitis is growing across Canada, said Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. Researchers estimate that it will rise to 400,000 Canadians by 2030.

How do you treat people? Jesus teaches us how to treat people. “Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation. And here’s why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room, I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.’ “Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me— you did it to me.’

Minister’s Minute ANDREAS BASSON

LIFE CHURCH

Matthew 25:34-40 (The Message) Jesus is telling us that He loves people. He is saying that the way we treat others, those who are in need, strangers to us, or people in pain, is in fact how we treat Him. In the two parables just before this He primarily describes our relationship with Him while asking us to evalu-

ate how we wait for His return and whether we are good stewards with everything we have been given. But what we learn from Jesus here is that He is also concerned about our relationships with those around us. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35 How are you treating people? And not just the ones we love and agree with… How are we treating those that most of society is looking down on or disagree with? I hope this challenges you in a good way. We are called to love and show our love in how we treat others.

For the Love of Art Show & Sale returns this weekend Local artist and event organizer Jan Rankin is once again bringing the arts community and public together this weekend (Nov. 5-6) for a spectacular family-friendly show. The fourth annual For the Love of Art Show and Sale features a wide range of art and artisanal items from 30 of Delta’s finest creators. Over the two days, visitors are encouraged to browse two floors of the cedar barn where they can meet the artists, enjoy live music, on-site food, door prizes, and partake in a scavenger hunt for the whole family and more. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days with free admission and parking. Since the show’s first run in 2018, Rankin’s mission and passion has been to bring together the diverse talent of artists and artisans in the Ladner and Tsawwassen area with art lovers and collectors. The yearly show is gently juried and carefully curated and designed to support a broad variety of fine artists and artisans. “Chat with the artists, learn more about their artwork and

Shop local this holiday season. The Harris Barn is a unique opportunity to view artwork from local artists. Guests will appreciate the variety of exqui-

site, handcrafted items at affordable prices. There is something for everyone. “Honestly, this show just gets better every year, attracting a wide audience from near and far who want to experience art in South Delta,” added Rankin. “The enthusiasm and energy from the com-

Delta Sports Hall of Fame welcomes seven members MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Sports Hall of Fame returned from a two-year pandemic pause to welcome seven new members as part of its 2023 induction class. They were honoured on Saturday night at the Delta Sports Hall of Fame’s Banquet of Champions at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. Here is a brief rundown of the seven inductees: Athlete Linda Jervis (golf) This North Delta native was one of Canada’s top-ranked amateurs. In 1988, Jervis reached the semi-finals of the U.S. Amateur and also competed in the Turquoise Open (1987) and Safeco Classic (1989). Linda turned professional in 1991 playing the Player’s West Tour. She had top 10 finishes in her first seven events and won the Bidwell Tournament. After winning two du Maurier qualifying tournaments, she then played in two Canadian Women’s Opens. In 1993 and 1994, she played on the Asian and Australian tours. Since her playing days, Jervis has been a teaching professional. From 2007 to ‘19, she was the lead coach in the ‘Playgrounds to Fairways’ program for B.C. Golf, working with over 10,000 elementary students. Jeff Skinner (soccer) Growing up in North Delta, this allround athlete credits long-time Delta Metro coach John Mantei who accelerated his soccer development. Skinner prided himself on his selection to the national U20 team that won gold at the CONCACAF Championships in Mexico in 1996 and qualified for the FIFA U20 World Cup a year later in Malaysia. He went on to be a key member of Canada’s Pan Am Games team that placed fourth and earned nine more international caps with the U23 team. Skinner also played eight years professionally for the Vancouver 86ers/ Whitecaps. He is now a 20-year veteran of the Burnaby Fire Department and has made an impact on today’s youth players as a coach with South Delta United Soccer Club. Coach Gerry White (baseball) This Ladner resident has spent

decades developing some of the top baseball talent in the city. White actually got his start on the ball field coaching his daughter Lauren with the South Delta Invaders rep “B” softball program for five years. He began his decorated run in minor baseball coaching his son Brad at the Mosquito level and his made an impact on the diamond since. He led that talented Ladner team to three provincial titles, a gold at Westerns and a runner-up finish at the 2007 nationals. The Excel skills development program White initiated is a legacy with Ladner Minor Baseball to this day. From 2008- 2017 White was head coach with the North Delta Blue Jays of the B.C. Premier Baseball League and led them to junior titles in 2011 and 2014. Today, he serves as general manager of the entire Blue Jays program. Todd Clarke (volleyball) Like father, like son. In 2013 Ron Clarke was honoured with his induction to the Delta Sports Hall of Fame. Now it’s Todd’s turn thanks to his tireless energy and devotion to volleyball that has impacted so many student athletes in the city. In this era where finding people to coach teams, or serve in an executive position, is often a challenge, individuals like Todd are both a blessing and a rarity. The longtime Delta teacher has devoted countless volunteer hours coaching school teams. His coaching resume is extensive but topping the list are 30 years coaching volleyball and 25 in basketball. He speaks with great pride and humility of the successes of his Seaquam Secondary teams over the years. A provincial gold medal in 2011 followed by two silver medals are certainly notable, but the fact that his Seaquam teams have qualified for almost every provincial tournament since 2007 is testament to the long-term success of the program. Ironically, Todd takes the most satisfaction not from the winning but from the opportunity to provide a positive and competitive environment for his players. Often overshadowed by his coaching, renown is his commitment to the growth and development of high school sports locally and provincially. This is demonstrated by the number of years spent in executive positions.

Pioneer Laverne Theis (curling) This Saskatchewan native’s first exposure was when in her early 30s, living in North Delta, she innocently walked into the recreation centre and enrolled in a Learn to Curl program. She was hooked! After just one year of curling, she agreed to serve on the Board of Directors at the Delta Thistle Club. After eight years of curling and volunteering on the board, in 1991, she was appointed club manager. She remained manager until her retirement in 2015. Although it was always a challenge to maintain club memberships, the ever-present Theis enthusiastically welcomed curlers to the club, provided instruction for all ages and skill levels, and did her best to make curling a positive experience. Builder Howard Tsumura (media) This lifetime North Delta resident’s journalism career began in 1983 as he took his first newspaper job in Houston, BC. This was followed by short stints with the Delta Optimist and the Now newspapers. In 1986, he joined the sports department of The Province. For the next 27 years he would apply his trade with this publication, earning

several honours along the way. In 2017, he left the paper to create a new website, Varsity Letters, a platform he uses to chronicle high school and university sport. While he covered both professional and amateur sport, his true passion was in writing about “the amazing student athletes I have encountered.” The list of accolades for Tsumura is impressive. Two Hall of Fame inductions at SFU and Basketball BC, Lifetime Membership in the BC Football Association, two Top Sport Writer awards from Canada West, a National Sport Reporting award, and a basketball tournament named in his honour, are all tributes to his outstanding writing skills. Sponsor Meridian Farm Market (Bryan Candy) In 2019, Meridian Farm Market decided to celebrate their 30th anniversary by offering 30 percent back fundraiser program. Meridian recognized that the demand for fundraisers like this was much greater than anticipated which led them to making the program permanent. Sports teams, churches, schools and many other organizations have all greatly benefited.

854 ft2 1 1 #101 1319 Martin Street, White Rock Testimonials: The sale of our apartment in Vancouver could not have gone any better. It was a difficult process as it had to be done during the pandemic and the unit had tenants. I am impressed by how Yolanda tackled each problem undeterred and went above and beyond. She communicated the status frequently and moved everything forward. Yolanda’s optimism, integrity and dedication to making her clients succeed distinguish her from the crowd. By integrity I mean we trusted at all times that she acted in our best interest. The sale came to it’s successful conclusion in record time - astonishing! Thank you! US

The empathetic understanding Yolanda brought to bare as we, a couple of seniors, embarked on what seemed an insurmountable task was immediately obvious to us both and your dedication and persistence while dealing with the turbulent real estate market here in the Vancouver area is impressive. We particularly appreciate your hands on approach as we went through each stage of the process of assessing value, staging for sale, showing our home and, finally, negotiating the best possible price. HECTOR, Klaus Dieter Johann August 19, 1944 - October 8, 2022 My buddy and partner Klaus Hector exited this realm on Saturday, October 8th. He was well respected and loved by many. Klaus was born in Weilburg, Austria, August 19, 1944, and after an amazing early life he immigrated to Canada at the age of 18; inspired by Karl Mai’s books. I would like to thank his doctor, Horst Hollinger, for the wonderful care and support he gave Klaus. Also, many thanks to the amazing nurses at Fraser Health Palliative care. He could not have survived as long as he did without you. And I thank the MAID team from the bottom of my heart for the excellent care and assistance they provided.

PATERSON, George Charles b 16 December 1945 Jasper, Alberta d 17 September 2022 Ladner, B.C.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at 1:30pm on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at River Group 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Klaus lived a varied and colourful life. He had a wonderful sense of humour and was a fabulous storyteller. However, he never got around to writing the book we all told him he should write. Throughout his life Klaus was open to numerous adventures; many of them hilarious! He had endless stories from the exploits in his life. Klaus possessed a need for speed and had a romance with his many cars. During a trip through Oregon, he mistakenly took the sports car following him for someone who wanted to race. The police officer was not amused; nor was Klaus with the $1100 + fine! In 1962 he sailed the yacht, Cadillac Snapper, back from Hawaii after it won the Vic Maui by over 30 hours. Unfortunately, they lost their power while entering the shipping lanes and had to persevere gale force winds until reaching the Washington Coast. Among his many attributes he was a European-trained chef and enjoyed cooking wonderful meals for friends and family. Klaus’s life was full of hilarious and often challenging situations including many creative businesses.
