turbed grassland habitat for species at risk and species of other concern

A program that helps protect biodiversity and habitat for species at risk on the Fraser River Delta has received a signifi cant contribution from Ottawa

Delta MP Carla Qualtrough was at Emma Lea Farms on Westham Island Nov 9 where, on behalf of Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault, announced Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust (DFWT) will receive $260,000 over four years for its Grassland Set Asides program The funding comes from Canada’s Enhanced Nature’s Legacy Priority Places Initiative

Only five percent of native grassland remains within the lower Fraser River Delta. DFWT works with farmers to tempo rarily take fields out of agricultural production, plant native grasses, and set them aside as undis

“This is a project that will go over four years so that they can carry out the work that protects grassland habitat on agri cultural land right here in Delta,” said Qualtrough “This initiative supports programs that will work with farmers to support regenerative agriculture, plant native grasses and set them aside as undisturbed grassland habitat for species at risk and other species of other concern The Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust project targets four species the Great Blue Heron, Barn Owl, Barn Swallow and Short Eared Owl.

“I just want to thank them for everything they do and helping them to thrive now and genera tions to come This is just one example of how this program supports the protection and recovery of species at risk and their habitat through conservation action.”

Thanks for following us on:

DFWT executive direc tor Christine Schmalz says the financial sup port will mean approxi mately 400 hectares of tall grass will be estab lished and maintained

“The funding announced today will make it financially feasible for partnering farmers to incorporate short term grasslands

into their crop rotation,” explained Schmalz “The loss of grassland habitats is listed as one of the main threats to both Barn Owl and Short Eared Owl populations Grassy farm fields have also been identified as important forging habitat for the Pacific Great Blue Heron and for the Barn Swallow as well.

“Grassland set asides established through the (DFWT) programs mimic the natural grasslands that were once abundant in this region.”

Delta Farmers Institute president Jack Bates added the federal sup port is crucial for the DFWT to carry out its programs and make a significant impact.

“The (DFWT) has been going on for just about 30 years now and the money goes directly to the farmers We run a pretty lean ship. It’s com munity based and we certainly appreciate any funding from the outside Environment Canada has been great over the years, helping us out when they can, ” said Bates.

Final episode of The Great Canadian Baking show is Sunday

The Great Canadian Baking Show has come down to the final three and Tsawwassen’s Lauren Tjoe is part of the trio.

Tjoe was named Star Baker in the seventh episode of the show, deemed Fancy Dessert Week, which aired last Sunday (Nov 13) on CBC. The series was produced and taped over the summer in Toronto, so Tjoe has not been able to give a hint about how it ends and who walks away with

the title of Canada’s Best Amateur Baker

But on Sunday, she was named Star Baker because of her jelly art cake named Dino Island that automatically got her into the final.

“I don’t believe that a professional chef could have made it better,” said judge Bruno Feldeisen. “Keep baking that way ”

Tjoe said she was happy with getting this far, she said Tuesday by email

“I’d just like to say that I am so grateful and humbled to have made it to the finale.

Chi (Nguyen) and Zoya

(Thawer) are two of the most creative and tal ented individuals that I have ever had the plea sure of meeting,” Tjoe said

Nguyen and Thawer are the other two remaining bakers

“Being able to bake alongside them has been the greatest honour and I’ve had so much fun being in the tent with them over eight whole episodes,” Tjoe said. “I’m looking forward to watching the finale with my friends and family on Sunday and hope fully I’ve done Delta Tsawwassen proud!”

Tjoe, 21, is a finance student at UBC According to her profile on the show’s website, she is a “self described, 21 year old grandma”

In addition to bak ing, her hobbies include knitting, crocheting, sewing, and collecting vintage tea pots She also likes classic cars, espe cially from the 1950s and 1960s and heavy metal. And she’d really like to get a 1986 Toyota MR2.

Lauren’s mom Kim said that the 10 bakers who participated in the show have become like family and that their friendship and support

of each other is inspira tional

“Lauren’s entire fam ily is absolutely over the moon with her accomplishments on the show so far, and we are incredibly grateful that she has had this oppor tunity,” Kim said.

One of the challenges, the Show Stopper, in the finale, asks the three remaining bakers to bake a garden party des sert centrepiece.

The final episode of the show airs this Sunday, Nov 20, at 8 p m on CBC The shows are also on CBC’s Gem online service

The dash cam video posted on TikTok shows a big semi heading east ward, steaming along on the Deltaport overpass Then another semi pulls out from behind the first, crossing the double

solid line and heading into the oncoming lane The driver then corrects and pulls back, nar rowly avoiding a head on crash.

The incident likely was upsetting for the driver in the oncoming vehicle who recorded the video and it was also upsetting

for Delta Police, who received a copy of the video on Oct 19 Police posted the video on Facebook and Twitter and checked vehicle movement records with Deltaport and located the driver He was fined $368 for driving without due care and attention and

another $109 for cross ing a double solid line, as well as handed nine demerit points on his driver’s licence

Acting Insp. James Sandberg said that track ing down the driver, who later admitted to the incident, involved some leg work but it wasn’t

Jack described his meeting with Jeannie as love at first sight. She quickly fell in love with him, and they were married January 12th, 1960. Jack doted on Jeannie until her final days, and we know that they are now reunited in Heaven. Together, they had 7 children, Len, Marco, Peter, Ronald, Helen, Rene and Conrad. Although they sadly lost Marco as an infant, Jack never lost sight of providing for his family, and teaching them the skills and values that made him a reliable, wise, and capable person.

Jack Van Vliet

Jacobus (Jack) Van Vliet entered eternal life on November 12th, 2022, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family Until his final days, Jack was able to live his life his way, and felt gratification in his work, and his family Despite the pain of losing his loving wife Jeannie, and his battle with cancer, Jack never lost his determination to get things done, and to improve the nursery he built with his family You could always find him at Sunnyside, where he would be busy building, fixing tractors, or helping others with expert advice learned over a lifetime of experience. He was grateful that he worked with family, and took great pride in all his children. Being a builder all his life, Jack taught many of us the values of hard work, being selfreliant, and of thinking things through.

Jack was born in the town of Voorshoten, Holland, on December 11th, 1934. He and his siblings worked together on the family farm every day and formed close relationships that would last his entire life. He quickly grew into a strong young man and learned the values of discipline, hard work and responsibility, which he carried with him in all avenues of life. Even in his youth, Jack was so dependable that his older brothers would go to him for help. The different skills he had learned working on the family farm and growing up in the turmoil of the Second World War would shape his life, and he would often credit these things with the lessons he passed on.The close bonds of family and friendship were cornerstones of Jack’s life, and he highly valued being self-reliant.

Jack and Jeannie moved their family to Canada in 1969 where they hoped to take advantage of new opportunities for themselves and their children. Even though he was still learning English, Jack was able to complete trade school, and got to work in the construction industry Soon, he joined his brothers’ construction company Working with his brothers Fred, Tony, Joe, Neil, George, Pete, Paul, Nick and John, Jack quickly became very successful.Together they built iconic pieces of the Lower Mainland like the Bloedel Conservatory, and the UBC Triumf Project. Working full-time in construction with his brothers, Jack was still able to start the Nursery with his son Len. Working seven days a week, growing a business with his sons, and with his brothers, Jack still managed to make time for his family at home. In later years, Jack continued to work at the Nursery with his family and took pride in the fact that his other sons worked in construction just as he did. Jack was always there for his family, employees, friends, or even strangers if they needed advice or help with a task. He is survived by his brothers Tony and Paul, his 6 children, 13 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren who will all miss him greatly

Jack’s passing leaves us with a void in our lives, but we are grateful for the moments we had with him. We only wish there could have been more even though Jack would be the first one to tell us that the show must go on, and that there’s still work to be done. We will see Jack in the skills he taught us, in the values he instilled, and in the Nursery he built with his family His legacy of close family bonds, strong values, and hard work will survive in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

complex.

“If we have a date and a time, we can nar row it down,” he said “Deltaport staff even come to recognize vehi cles after a while They’re focused on public safety so, for those reasons, they’ll work with us. ”

Sandberg wouldn’t say that there’s been an increase in careless com mercial driving but noted there are more dash cam videos of such incidents

“It might be being brought to our attention more, ” he said.

He added that many people complain about the low fines for such incidents, but it’s the leg islation that determines the penalties.

One check on driver behaviour is the National Safety Code number that’s issued to each trucking company.

Sandberg said if that number keeps appearing via incidents or fines, the company could lose its trucking licence

“So that’s a way of keeping the companies accountable and saying it’s not your drivers it’s company culture, it’s company attitude or what have you, ” Sandberg added.

Dave Earle, with the B.C. Trucking Association, said one way to improve trucking safety is by publicizing the names of drivers and companies who repeat edly operate recklessly, just as court records are public information

“Tell us who these players are so that we can make better decisions and hopefully have a bit of pressure to be felt on them,” he said

He said such incidents are not common

“If it happens once, that’s one time too many, ” he added

There is now improved training and enforcement in the trucking industry, said Earle

“But at the end of the day, we rely on the professional judgment of the driver And in this circumstance, there was none Let’s be clear”

He noted that with the nine demerit points, there’s also an $800 ICBC surcharge.

Following the truck bus crash in Humboldt, Sask , in April 2018, which killed 10 play ers and six staff of the Humboldt Broncos hock ey team, a national train ing system has become mandatory across Canada for new drivers

The mandatory entry level training system requires 140 hours of professional in class, on the road and parking lot instruction for new driv ers, followed by a road test for a Class 1 licence But that’s just the basic, first step, Earle said

It’s up to each com pany to ensure that driv ers are all trained on the equipment they’ll be operating, he said.

Delta Police regu larly team up with other police agencies, such as Vancouver police, Surrey RCMP or New Westminster, to conduct safety checks of com mercial vehicles The most recent took place in Deltaport on Nov 7 where 48 tickets were written and 34 notices issued or vehicles were taken out of service

City revising its Community Energy and Emissions Plan

The City of Delta is updating its Community Energy and Emissions Plan

The plan, among other things, will help identify priorities for the most appropriate and effective climate action decisions for the city and community.

“Through this process we aim to understand Delta’s unique community assets, values, and needs and the steps needed to make the biggest impact.

“The final plan will be integrated and implemented to support Delta’s social, economic, and environmental resilience in the short and long term,” according to a report from the city.

Staff recently wrapped up another round of public consultation through a survey and will come back to coun cil with a draft report later this year or in early 2023.

The latest round of engagement asked residents’ input on such “big moves ” as reducing emissions, considering electrifying transportation, active transportation and transit, new buildings that are energy efficient and low carbon, as well as retrofitting existing buildings

The first round of public engagement earlier this year, which

included a survey and two stakeholder work shops, found that par ticipants feel a personal sense of responsibility to help reduce emissions that contribute to climate change and are looking to the city to lead by example

A summary report noted, among other things, residents hope to see a variety of transit options within and beyond Delta and would also like improved transit service to Delta’s industrial areas

Participants also imagined e-bikes replac ing personal vehicles and children getting safely to and from school by active modes of transportation, and hope that, in the future, a personal vehicle is not required to live in Delta, but those vehicles that remain are zero emis sions

They would like to see more fast charging infra structure and electric vehicles (EV) become more affordable.

The report goes on to note, “There is a belief that EV adoption is hampered by high cost of vehicles, limited charging options and long wait times at those fast chargers that do exist.

“It was noted that the City’s EV strategy, when implemented, will make charging easier especially for residents in multiunit buildings”

Surging inflation showed signs of eas ing across Canada last month that is, for those not living on the West Coast.

The inflation rate in B.C. grew at an annual rate of 7 8 per cent in October, marking the third consecutive month of expansion, accord ing to data released Wednesday by Statistics Canada.

The national rate remained at 6.9 per cent in October

This is also the fourth month in a row in which inflation in B.C. exceed ed that of the national average:

July: 8 per cent (B C ) vs 7 6 per cent (Canada)

August: 7 3 per cent (B C ) vs 7 per cent (Canada)

September: 7 7 per cent (B.C.) vs. 6.9 per cent (Canada)

October: 7.8 per cent (B C ) vs 6 9 per cent (Canada)

The latest numbers show British Columbians

facing the highest rate of inflation among all the large province.

Beyond rising food (+10 1 per cent) and gasoline (+17 8 per cent) prices, Statistics Canada noted B C property taxes rose at the highest rate among all the prov inces at 8 9 per cent

Meanwhile, the national statistics agency attributed the return of university classes and rising immigration lev els to driving up rental prices last month.

For those hitting the grocery aisles, pasta (44 8 per cent), marga rine (40 4 per cent) and lettuce (30.2 per cent) experienced the biggest gains among individual products

“Make no mistake, current inflation pres sures are still too high and too broad for the Bank of Canada’s lik ing But early signs of easing price pressures will give the BoC some confidence that interest rates are near levels that are restrictive enough to ensure inflation returns back to target over time,”

RBC economist Claire Fan said in a note, refer ring to the national data.

She predicts the cen tral bank will hike its key rate by 25 basis points next month down from last month’s hike of 50 basis points

“We’ll call this one a tie, as it matched con sensus and held the annual inflation rate steady at just below seven per cent,” BMO chief economist Douglas Porter said in a note

He pointed out that October’s national rate of 6 9 per cent now puts Canadian inflation at the second lowest level in the G7, exceeding only Japan German, Italy and the U.K. are all fac ing rates in the double digits.

“We still expect much lower inflation by the latter half of 2023, but today’s (Nov. 9) data were generally a remind er that we need to first see downward pressure from softer job and income gains to make that happen,” CIBC chief economist Avery Shenfield said in a note

Criminals arewinning

IAN JACQUES

For months now, the provin cial NDP government has been under fire for its catch and release justice system.

Repeat offenders continue to get a slap on the wrist and in many cases, are released hours or days after their time in custody where they once again wreak havoc on average, every day citizens.

Vancouver has seen a huge uptick in repeat offenders committing crime after crime with no consequences Delta is not immune to these career criminals

I recently reported on a serious incident in Tsawwassen where a man with 39 previous convictions, including multiple assaults and one conviction for manslaughter in 2018, was arrested by police and is facing several charges including threats to the public and law enforcement with a weapon.

My question to our provincial politi cal leaders is why was this man walking the streets? Why were police in danger? Why was the public in danger? Thirty nine convictions and this clown is not in jail? Our justice system is a joke.

Recently Attorney General Murray Rankin and Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth were in Ottawa meeting with federal, provincial and territorial ministers and have secured a commitment from the feds on addressing repeat offending nationwide.

And while this is a start we still have a long way to go. And what does securing a commitment really mean? It means more meetings and more talk.

Well talk is cheap We need some real action. We need funding now for police forces, mental health workers, addiction services and action from our justice system to get these criminals locked up for good Everyone should feel safe on our streets, but right now our streets are not safe

The criminals are the ones winning these days

As if inflation wasn’t enough

The world post pan demic is certainly a different place I thought the biggest change would be not wearing a mask any longer With fall upon us, the colder weather and the traditional respiratory season ahead, the recommendation is to mask up again, although it’s not mandatory yet. I heard a study said 72 per cent of Canadians agreed with the return to mandatory masking Odd, I haven’t seen 72 per cent of people wearing them

But there are other things that have slipped in as well It seems if you go to a fast food outlet in the City of Vancouver, you ’ re charged for a bag or a cup Their council mandated it back in 2020 as part of a zero waste program The restau rants can be fined for not fol lowing the rules You have the option of carrying your own cup (I don’t think McDonalds wants me using my A&W mug), or declining the bag and carrying your meal by hand

A few nights ago, I stopped

for a quick bite I was given the option of how many bags I wanted (there’s a volume discount). The screen said it was the law to charge for the bag. The law! I opted for none, do my part, but when I picked it up, it was in a bag. Oh no. I didn’t pay for the bag! Did I break the law? Do I have to turn myself in?

It seems strange that there was such a big deal made about saving trees a few years ago, thus the move away from paper bags, but now that’s the only option I can’t keep up

The icing on the cake is

retailers being allowed to charge the transaction fee on credit card purchases I don’t know how many are doing this, there were a few that announced it right away when it was allowed Seems a little short sighted to me. I thought a cashless society was what we wanted, or do stores really want me to start using cash again, something they have to count, take to the bank, and have to worry about when the store is open Bad guys like stores full of cash, but can’t do much with credit card transactions

The one thing to remember, consumers have choices If they don’t like these things, they’ll do something differ ent. And then people wonder where the customers went Funny how that happens.

I was very pleased to see that the City of Delta is researching a ban on gas powered lawn imple ments (City looking at banning gas powered leaf blowers, Optimist, Nov 3, 2022 )

Only this morning I was at a local business where someone was blowing leaves with a noisy, smoke spewing

leaf blower. An employee told me that gas powered tools agitate local dogs and are unbelievably irri tating to staff

Many of my neigh bours have landscaping companies to maintain their properties Without exception, these compa nies use powerful gas powered tools, creating an almost daily distur bance in the spring, sum

mer and fall. In particu lar, the most obnoxious items are gas powered leaf blowers and edge trimmers

There are electric (including battery oper ated) alternatives readily available Please encour age council in their efforts to make Delta a more peaceful place to live

I would like to con gratulate the Ellis family and staff at the Westham Island Herb Farm, for an outstanding display of their year ’ s work

We attended their sea son ’ s windup and were most impressed. In spite of challenges faced by an abnormally long dry summer, they managed

to produce a spectacular abundance of food, all on their home soil. The yard was ablaze with pumpkins galore, while bins of earthy coloured squash lined the walkway Assorted veggies, home made goodies as well as a variety of local meats, were available to com plete any gourmets taste. Helpful hands assisted

us to our car with our purchases, making a cold and windy day, one of warmth and apprecia tion

As we drove away, we felt a deep sense of grati tude for our Delta farm ers, their challenges and their ability to provide for us, an abundance of such amazing products.

Thanks for your clean-up efforts

Editor:

I would like to publicly thank the gentleman who raked up the leaves from the stairs at Fred Gingell Park

On Saturday, Nov. 5, a Good Samaritan took time out of his day to

clean up the mess on the stairs left behind from the winds. Having lived downtown for the bet ter part of two decades, it is nice to now live in a community where its residents are invested in assisting in the preser

vation and usability of our public spaces when required.

Without this kind gentleman’s hard work, I wouldn’t have been able to complete my workout. Well done!

Editor:

I just had to write about something that warmed my heart today (Nov 10) and one of the reasons I love our com munity

Today (Nov 10) I took my dad and sister to a local pub for lunch as my sister was travelling back from New York, where at 73 years old, she had just completed her 24th mara

thon run My dad at 98 met us there in his electric wheelchair on which he mounted his veteran plate he was proud of having removed it from his car a number of years ago We completed our meal and upon request ing our bill we were informed that someone anonymously paid for our meal and was their way of thanking him for

his service

This brought a tear to our eyes I just want to say thank you on behalf of ourselves and our father who served as a private in the Canadian army in an artillery bat talion in the Second World War

Thank you Delta and our anonymous remem brance person.

On Friday, Oct 28, I had parked my car in the park ing lot of the Coast Capital Bank in Tsawwassen Someone parked their bicycle beside my car, Coast Capital does not have a bicycle rack My husband was in the car waiting for me when the bicycle feel over.

The bicycle left a dent and scrapped the paint to the undercoat I did let the branch know and they kindly informed me that while they would forward my number cyclists do not carry insurance and they could not make the person call me back

Why should I have to

pay for the damage? I understand that cyclists do as they please, howev er, when they cause dam age to another person ’ s property they should own up to it and pay for it to be repaired.

Up until now there hasn’t been a dent or scratch on my 2017 Jeep

Wholehearted thanks for Delta Hospital ER

Editor:

My wholehearted thanks for the emergency department of Delta Hospital

On a recent night, my husband took me from Tsawwassen to the hospi tal ER with extreme pain after a fall to sidewalk earlier in the day I was treated relatively quickly

getting an x ray and medical assessment of a broken hip I remained in ER for the next two days as staff tried to find a hos pital to do surgery. The staff was always encour aging and very supportive giving me a very comfort ing neighbourly sense of security which proved very valuable.

I then was transferred to Royal Columbian Hospital for surgery with a good send off and posi tive attitude My surgery was first class.

Our community is so fortunate to have a local friendly hospital to pro vide excellent help when needed

Dog park fencing is a waste of tax dollars

Editor:

Why is the city of Delta spending so much money on fencing dog parks?

They are currently fencing the beautiful park beside the elemen tary school in Beach Grove with an industrial prison like chain link fence making the area less accessible

I have spoken to both members of the PAC at the school and users of

the dog park and neither were in favour of this fence. Why are we wast ing so much money on materials and labour to put in a fence that was not needed or wanted? An area that was not previously considered off leash is now includ ed within the fence

There are walking trails that were enjoyed by both dog users and those without dogs that are now inaccessible

unless you are in the fenced dog area It is claimed to be a mixed use park, but as soon as it is fenced completely, it truly moves from mix use to only for off leash dogs

I’m really frustrated by this change It chang es how the park looks and how it can be used

I don’t want any more of my tax dollars wasted on fencing

Restore the parking that we all enjoy

Re: parking on River Road West

The following letter was sent to Delta council and copied to Delta Optimist

The general public and we have enjoyed walking the dike with view of the river, super port, Salish Sea and mountains for

decades Parking has been permitted on spe cial wide shoulders to the road.

We welcome improved parking facilities recent ly provided further upstream. Recent sign changes now prohibit parking on the shoulder

near the best access to the public walk. People with limited mobility find it too difficult to get to the view

Please explain why his toric public parking privi leges have been revoked and restore them now

Stopmakingexcuses

Editor:

Without dragging this on too much, I feel compelled to reply to the usual silly non sense regarding excuses for kids to go wild on Halloween (or hell night, or Canada Day etc ) We hear the same garbage. Every Single Time Let’s take each excuse in turn.

“It’s not the kids, it’s the politicians!” cries D M Johnston (Optimist, letters, Nov 10), arguing that the poor kids have nothing else to do That argument gets blown away instantly when you consider 95 per cent of the other kids, who also have nothing to do apparently, manage to

occupy themselves with out hurting and annoy ing others

“It’s always been that way! I can remember 2,500,000 years ago when cavemen used to light fires along where the Trunk Road is now!”

Just because some thing has been a par ticular way since we can remember does not make it right. There would never be any progress on any issue if we all took this mindset

How about we just start taking some responsibility, and rec ognize that it’s a very small proportion (five percent) of folks who ruin things for everyone

else These five per cent will not listen to reason, do not care for others, and rest assured would still find ways to cause mayhem no matter what

Personally, I think circulating pictures of the parents to ‘ name and shame’ those directly responsible for raising such hooligans (and turning a blind eye to their destruction) would work best However, the parents were probably part of that five per cent when they were younger (and likely still are in some ways), and will not change unless they are absolutely forced to. Denise

We clearly still have work to do

Editor:

The magnitude and intensity of the Halloween fireworks fight in Tsawwassen was a body blow to civic deco rum It went far beyond teen age rambunctious ness and high spirits

How did teen behavior transition from throwing eggs in the past to mass destruction and mayhem of the present?

The teens involved in this are not hardened criminals Like many teenagers, they are sim ply adolescents who love attention and love to shock the staid adults around them

In the distant past if a teen uttered the words “hell” or “damn” it was enough to trigger a severe reprimand from an offended adult In

time we became more tolerant of such language, and of course, teens had to resort to more extreme words in order to elicit the same shock from adults By becoming more tolerant we sim ply upped the ante and embarked on a trend that culminated, as we saw in the last federal elec tion, with the spectacle of adult parents hurling vile and obscene invective at political rallies, all this in front of their young children

All this clearly shows that our tendency to lean towards individual assertion at the expense of social restraints has not always been fruitful I am willing to bet that the vast majority of the teens are both penitent and ashamed of their behav

ior, and we, as adults, bear some responsibility for this behavior

It is our duty to give our youth clear direc tives, to teach them to be considerate, to be respectful, and to dem onstrate to them that harmful transgressions will be punished, very simply because society has a duty to protect its members.

The very fact that some of these youths were quite willing to throw fireworks at other people and so cause grievous harm to other human beings should give us very, very serious pause for thought.

We live in a civil soci ety. It appears that we have some reflection and some work ahead of us.

The elegant lines of the Persian Fisher are appar ent even from the photos, which explains why the Delta Fishing Heritage Society wants the beauti ful boat to be on perma nent display outside city hall

The 35 foot salmon gillnetter has been in the process of restoration for the past five years and is about half complete.

“Most of the exterior is done,” said society presi dent John Stevens

The Persian Fisher was believed to have been built in the 1930s by Kishi Boatworks in Steveston, according to the society It was a built by Japanese fishermen who had an eye for making nice look ing boats

“They had what we call ‘nice lines’ on them,” said

Stevens “Very estheti cally pleasing design”

The boat has been modified over the years, but it remains a classic example of a salmon fish ing vessel of its age.

It’s not a completely pure design because the smaller boathouse was replaced with a larger one that was salvaged from another boat, Stevens noted

The society said their research showed that the boat was confiscated by the Canadian govern ment during the Second Word War when Japanese Canadians were expelled from the West Coast and put into prison camps in southern Alberta and the B C Interior

After being bought and sold a few times, the last owner, Patrick Murphy, retired the boat in 1977, and put it into dry stor age. The Murphy family

then donated the boat in 2015 to the society for restoration.

What has made the project easier is the fact the boat had been stored in a barn for years, instead of the water, keeping the wood in good condition, said Stevens

“It was in good shape to start with,” he added “It was in surprisingly good condition We were quite surprised when we first looked at it.”

So far, at the halfway point, the project has cost about $10,000 The society is continuing to fundraise and hosts its annual online auc tion from Nov 21 to 27 People can bid for art work by local artists by giving their best price via the society’s website at: https://dfhs ca/

Some of the artists include John Horton, Jody Wilson and Michael

Duncan, the first curator of the museum, who died recently

In addition to local fundraising, the society is also hoping that some help from the City of

Delta will speed along the project so that it can be finished next summer.

That help will come by the city creating a con crete pad and building a roof for the boat. That

assistance was delayed by COVID 19, said Stevens.

Once that’s done, work can start on the boats’ interior and the project can be completed.

The Ukrainian Canadian Social Services (UCSS) branch in Vancouver has certainly not been idle, especially during the summer of 2022.

Under the direction of its presi dent, Tsawwassen resident Roman Sawycky, UCSS Vancouver forged an alliance with Rotary World Help, an affiliate of Rotary Clubs International to access surplus hos pital equipment throughout B C and load it onto shipping contain ers for transport to Ukraine.

Since 2016 and up to the ship ment in August 2022, UCSS Vancouver has loaded and sent 19 containers full of medical supplies to Ukraine including hospital beds (with mattresses and linens), x ray machines, operating tables, wheel chairs (both electric and manual), walkers and ultrasound machines Critically, Ukraine has received five of these containers since the Russian invasion in February

The invasion of Ukraine has

Ukraine relief efforts

resulted in thousands of military and civilian injuries and dramatically increased the urgency of supplying medical materials to Ukraine

As a result of the war, fundrais ing for humanitarian relief efforts stepped up across Canada and throughout the Lower Mainland Shipping a container overseas to Ukraine can cost in the vicinity of $15,000 The journey is long and involves coordinating a number of logistical steps: first the container goes by truck from the initial loading site to the Port of Vancouver where it’s loaded onto a train; from there it’s shipped by rail to Halifax, where it’s then loaded on a ship and sails across the Atlantic, first to a German port and then continues on to a Polish port where it is loaded onto a truck and is driven to Ukraine

Before permanently settling in Tsawwassen, Sawycky worked in Ukraine for many years and has built up a network of trusted people upon whom he can call for assis

tance.

UCSS Vancouver is continuing its cooperation with Rotary World Help and is working to gather need ed medical equipment, hoping to send at least another three contain ers to “Hospitals in Ukraine are des perate for beds for injured service people and civilians,” said Sawycky “Fraser Health has approximately 400 beds, which it can donate, but the problem is the cost of shipping We have to pay each of the various transportation companies for every step of the way, from the warehouse loading dock in Vancouver all the way through to Ukraine It’s not cheap and costs are increasing.”

UCSS Vancouver, as a branch of Ukrainian Canadian Social Services Inc of Canada, is able to issue tax receipts for any donations received UCSS Vancouver’s mailing address is: UCSS Vancouver, 246 7610

Product innovation is also on the rise. New Ingredients, like Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Filling Spheres, as well as Drone delivery technology, are to name a few. Many of these products increase the body’s ability to produce collagen or fill in the spaces between the cells to give the surface a smoother plumper appearance.

As technology evolves, advances in skin care are on the same trajectory

The experts at Atlantis Day Spa strive to bring you the latest, greatest treatments and products.

One area in skin care that we get questions about is the use of injectables like Botox We believe there is a place for both, in skin care

Botox is a preventative treatment, not a restorative one It freezes facial muscles to prevent them from contracting which in affect temporarily reduces the deepening of lines and wrinkles. As the Botox wears

off, those lines and wrinkles are still apparent and continue to deepen. UsingBotoxisonlypartoftheequation, as it offers a temporary solution. For a more restorative solution you may want to consider treatments like Micro Needling, Sublative Resurfacing, Elos Skin Rejuvenation, and Sublime Skin Tightening These restorative treatments offered at Atlantis Day Spa, stimulate your body to produce more collagen from within your dermis, resulting in less lines and wrinkles. Therefore, when the Botox wears off, the lines and wrinkles will continue to

Twenty days of giving at DSS

For more than 20 years, students at Delta Secondary School (DSS) have collected food and gifts, and assembled ham pers for families in need in the school community to help them through the festive season

Last year, DSS gathered thousands of food items, hundreds of gifts and more than $7,000 in gift cards

This year, knowing that many more families are in need of support, the school community is hop ing to match or exceed last year ’ s success with this year ’ s Twenty Days of Giving campaign The goal again is to collect enough food, supplies and gift card donations to help 25 local families as well as the local food bank

“This hands on experi ence has really empha sized the importance of community and been a powerful example of what we can do when we

all work together,” said teacher Colleen Blatz, organizer of this initiative since 1999.

This initiative has become a wonderful holi day tradition, and each year, students have man aged to be more and more successful in helping members of the Ladner community Even retired staff and former students contact the school to see how they can continue to get involved and contrib ute.

Other teachers involved include Graham Harkley, Paige Collings and Carla Day

“We have many stu dents who are ready and willing to help, including Student Government and the Interact Club. We also encourage the local com munity to join in our ini tiative and help us to help others in need,” added Blatz

The Twenty Days of Giving campaign began

on Monday and will run until Dec. 2.

Any community mem bers who would like to help are invited to drop off non perishable food items and new toiletry items in the drop box at the school’s main entrance, located at 4615 51st Street, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p m Monday to Friday

For donations of cash or gift cards, please call ahead to the school office at 604 946 4194 to make arrangements. Monetary donations of $25 or more requiring a tax receipt should be provided in a cheque written to Delta Secondary School (memo: 20 Days of Giving)

The school’s Interact Club will also be running their third annual Food and Donation Drive Thru event on Nov. 29 for “Giving Tuesday,” from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in the school parking lot

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, more than 80 students from three South Park Elementary grade 6/7 classes visited Boundary Bay Cemetery in Tsawwassen to take part in a moving ceremony to remember and hon our veterans laid to rest there

Teacher Madame Hélène Hamilton worked with the City of Delta and the Tsawwassen branch

of the Royal Canadian Legion to organize the inaugural No Stone Left Alone memorial event

“My grandfather was a Second World War veteran in the Canadian Air Force My uncles also served in the military, so I am passionate about encouraging respect and gratitude for the service and sacrifice of veter ans, ” said Hamilton. “I spent 10 years as a para medic in Calgary before returning to my teaching career and during that time I attended many No Stone Left Alone events

“When I started working at South Park Elementary earlier this year, I was keen to see if we could bring this wonderful initiative to

South Park students so that they could engage in a personal act of remembrance and hope fully gain a better under standing of the sacrifices made by veterans that give us the peace and freedoms we enjoy today ”

During the ceremony, Royal Canadian Legion Tsawwassen Branch president Ken Harvey delivered the Act of Remembrance. After the Last Post, students observed two minutes’ silence before a wreath was placed at the Cross of Sacrifice Each stu dent then made their way to an assigned gravestone where they said the veteran’s name aloud and then took a

moment of silence to reflect on the veteran’s service and sacrifice. All students had previously painted a poppy on a stone, which they then placed at the Cross of Sacrifice in honour of their assigned veteran

“It is great to see so many youngsters here today honouring our veterans,” said Harvey “It is so important for young people to be aware of the sacrifices veterans made and to truly understand the meaning and impor tance of Remembrance Day so that we can continue to honour our veterans every year, for ever ”

This method is significantly more comfortable than the traditional dental syringe and employs a technique that makes the injection virtually painless. This type of freezing shortens treatment time for every patient and best of all, pain management for the patient is phenomenal. Some people don’t even realize that freezing is taking place. It’s nice to see children, who have never had dental anesthesia, leave their visit never having to experience the “anxiety” associated with “Syringe-Type” delivery methods. Many patients who work would never schedule a procedure in the middle of the day because of profound and lasting anesthesia. With Digital Anesthetic system, patients are now willing to come in at any time, knowing they will be able to communicate effectively at their job. This method of freezing greatly decreases anxiety associated with dental treatment and makes life easier for both the dental team and the patient. 130 4977 Trenant Street, Delta smile@ladnerdentist com 604 946 9588 Is there any way to make dental freezing and injections more pleasant and painless? If you are nervous about your investments, you’re not alone. Here’s my advice: Filter out the media noise. Dramatic news makes good headlines, but in reality volatility is normal and healthy Successful investing involves using the “ups” and “downs” to your advantage. Ensure your portfolio is well structured. Your financial advisor should customize an investment portfolio unique to your circumstances, carefully considering your specific needs for wealth protection, tax efficient income and comfort with risk. Benefit from a knowledgeable and experienced financial advisor If you have doubts, consider getting a second opinion. This is a multifactorial answer Foremost it depends on how well you take care of them. Subsequently diet; the types of foods you eat significantly impact on the wear of your teeth. Course foods tend to wear out the chewing surfaces at a much quicker rate. White mint candies that have a sandy feeling coating are highly abrasive and destructive to artificial teeth. Your particular physiology can affect your fitting surfaces. For example, osteoporosis can affect the fitting surfaces by creating a faster rate of change to your underlying bone structures. Numerous other factors may also play into these scenarios. I create dentures to last at least seven to ten years using high quality products; dependent on the above conditions. More Canadians are starting to hear about porting a mortgage, and are wondering not only what that means, but also if it’s something they’ll benefit from. Porting a mortgage simply means taking your current mortgage, with its rates and terms, and moving it to another property In a time of high interest rates porting obviously becomes more popular Porting you mortgage is not always guaranteed. Your mortgage lender will look to ensure you still meet qualification requirements such as income and credit. They will also review the property to ensure it falls within their guidelines so it is very important to discuss portability options before listing your home.

Here are the five most important points in creating a good ad: 1. Lead with a strong headline. It should be interesting and try not to be too cliché. Is not everyone tired of all the “Best Kept Secrets” that are in every marketplace today? 2 Use a graphic element that ties into the product(s) being sold and that will attract attention. 3. Make sure your ad copy describes at least one benefit for the potential customer Why should they buy that product now and/or why should they buy it at all? 4. There must be a call to action Create a sense of urgency so the reader has a reason to act on the information in the ad. 5. Tell them who you are and where you are. Design a strong logo and use a font relevant to the business you are in. Always include your address, website, phone number etc. 604 946 4451 5008 47A St , Ladner www delta optimist com How can you help in designing an ad that will get the readers’ attention amongst the other ads and the articles in the paper?

My wife and I had planned a trip to Daytona Beach last week.

With much excite ment, we drove down to the Sea Tac airport, but when we arrived, I saw a notification pop up on my phone alerting me of the anticipated hurricane. I used to live in Florida, so I knew hurricanes were a part of Floridian life, but I was concerned because Hurricane Ian had already devastated the state recently

Due to our excitement for this trip, if we saw any sign of it being safe enough to go, we were going to board this plane even if it became a storm watching trip rather than a beach resort trip. However, when my weath er app showed the severity of Hurricane Nicole as, “Significant threat to life or property,” I started to sec ond guess my resolve

Just 10 minutes before boarding, I called our

hotel and learned that Daytona Beach was evac uating

We rushed to the airline representative to change our flight to another warm destination since we only packed summer clothes I was losing control, and I like being in control Humanity has advanced so much, but we still can’t control things like the weather or a cancer diagnosis. We sometimes pretend to have every

thing under control and it makes us feel good, but things like this hurricane remind us that we ’ re not in control.

How do you feel when you lose control of situa tions in life? I lean on my faith in a God who ‘is’ in control.

When things go out of control Minister’s Minute

Matthew 6 contains stories that encourage its readers to trust God with our needs. I recognize that people are concerned about the economy and the impacts of the pandemic Please read Matthew 6 especially the part about not being anxious The author doesn’t tell us to stop wor rying because our troubles aren’t real; he points us to a God who knows our needs and sustains us through our troubles. I can’t always be in control of situations, but I can trust God who is in control and knows my needs, and is delighted to help me Will you trust him, too?

Fridaynight lightsupnext Sun Devils off to Chilliwack for provincial quarter finals

The South Delta Sun Devils have a Friday night encounter in Chilliwack with a trip to B C Place Stadium on the line.

The No 6 ranked Sun Devils will take on the No.

2 GW Graham Grizzlies in B.C. High School

Football’s provincial AAA quarter finals after a 14 13 wild card win over the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers on Nov 11 The Grizzlies earned the bye after winning the Eastern AAA Division with a 5 1 record.

“We’re up against last year ’ s regional champi ons, which would have been provincial champi ons if there wasn’t COVID (disrupting the usual playoff schedule),” said South Delta head coach Ray Moon. “They are a well coached team that

is big One thing going in our favour is they haven’t played in three weeks as they had a forfeit win (against Sardis) then the bye”

The Grizzlies’ lone loss this season was a 28 23 loss to No. 1 Vancouver College back on Oct 1 The Sun Devils fell 7 0 to the Fighting Irish a week later in Tsawwassen.

“It’s been unbelievable Other than Terry Fox (39 16 loss in September) it seems we have played to the level of our competi tion all season, ” continued Moon

That was evident again at Langley’s McLeod Stadium where the Sun Devils held off a Panthers team that entered the playoff tilt with a 2 4 league record

South Delta marched down the field in impres sive fashion on its open ing possession, capped

by a six yard touchdown run by quarterback Kenny Scott The momentum swung in the second quarter on a coverage breakdown that resulted in a huge Tweedsmuir passing play and a major

score a few plays later The Sun Devils regained the lead in the third quarter when Scott connected with Oskar Mcphie on a 70 yard pass and run play One snap later, Scott found Ben

Holmes in the end zone and Diego Alatorre added the extra point when his kick bounced in off the upright

That would prove to be the difference after the Panthers scored a major

early in the fourth quarter and opted to go for the two point conversion after the Sun Devils jumped offside, placing the ball on the one yard line. The running attempt was stuffed.

Dolphins swimmers thrive at meets in UBC and Langley

The short course swim season is underway and the Winskill Dolphins have wasted little time in making an impression at a pair of meets over the Nov 4 weekend Standouts Jeremy Slinn, Zach MacLeod and Kelly Qi were selected to represent Team B C at the Odlum Brown Colleges Cup at UBC Qi and McLeod were among the youngest swimmers to be in provincial team colours

All three raced against much older varsity athletes They achieved person

al best teams in the morning heats and advanced to the finals of their respec tive races, placing them in the top three in all of Western Canada.

Meanwhile, other Dolphin swim mers were competing at the LOSC Annual Heats and Finals Invitational in Langley

An impressive 48 finals were achieved with many placing in the top four and gaining provincial and divi sional time standards

Highlights included Abby MacLeod and Naomi Myott coming through with

dominating performances in the 100m and 200m back stroke, 200m individual medley, along with the 400m and 1,500m freestyle respectively, achieving first place finishes in their age group

Ludovica Pavia thrived in her 15 and over age group, sweeping the breast stroke events Caitlyn Fowler was first in the 100m free and third in the 100m fly

Kyla Marshall was eight in the 100m back and 800m free, swimming under 11 minutes in the latter race.

Aiden Lew was fifth in the 100m back

and 100m free He also managed to shave a full minute off his personal best in the 1,500m free

Evan Maloney was fifth in the 100m breaststroke, sixth in the 100m back and earned divisional qualification in the 50m back, placing him seventh overall

Bodey Iverson was impressive in the 100m backstroke while Nick MacPherson was sixth in the 50m free. Newcomer Max Li made his first final in the 50m breaststroke, placing eighth overall

Provincialbannerraising onFridayforU18Storm

After making a deep run at the 28th annual Tim Jardine Showcase on home ice, the U18 A1 South Delta Storm will turn their attention to recognizing their memorable run last spring

The Storm will officially unveil their provincial championship banner in a special ceremony prior to their Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association regular season home opener against Mission at 9 p.m. on Friday at the Ladner Leisure Centre

The special week in Campbell River back in March was capped by a dra matic 3 2 double overtime win over Hollyburn in B C Amateur Hockey’s tier two provincial title game It was the first time a team from the South Delta Minor Hockey Association has won a B.C. championship in 15 years.

“We won a provincial (title) last year and it doesn’t happen here very often,” said Storm head coach and former NHLer Ken Priestlay. “It’s something we need to make sure South Delta knows about and you celebrate it by bringing back the graduated players as well I’m

not sure exactly what is planned but I know it’s going to be a special night.”

Priestlay has seven players back from last year ’ s championship team. The Storm secured their spot in the PCAHA’s top flight once again thanks to a 4 1 3 record in placement play over the past month.

A bid to reach the U18 gold medal game at the Jardine Showcase ended with a 4 2 semi final loss to the Victoria Admirals on Saturday night South Delta had earlier rolled off four straight wins over Edmonton (6 5), Campbell River (7 4), Burnaby Minor (7 3) and Langley (7 0) in the quarter finals

“It was one of those years where we wanted to make sure we brought in a lot of out of town teams that we nor mally don’t see all the time,” Priestlay continued. “There’s actually a couple we invited because we saw them at pro vincials Our parents did an incredible job putting this tournament together”

Okanagan went on to capture the U18 title with a 3 2 win over Victoria in the final The Vernon based North Zone Kings earned U15 honours with a 5 2 victory against the Okanagan Hockey Academy.
