Tsawwassen’s Lauren Tjoe is champion of CBC’s Great Canadian Baking Show
PHIL MELNYCHUK Optimist Contributor
The best baker in Canada is from tiny Tsawwassen
Lauren Tjoe left it all on the kitchen counter and held nothing back in bak ing the piece de resistance that won her the title of Canada’s Best Amateur Baker
Tjoe finished first out of three in the Great Canadian Baking Show, the final episode of which aired Sunday night on CBC
Tjoe was named top baker after eight gruelling episodes where com petitors had to bake three dishes for each show.
In the finale, for the signature bake, competitors had to make a Paris Brest pastry and a technical bake which required baking a Cassata which is sponge cake, marzipan and candied fruit
The final task, the last Show Stopper of the season was a garden party des sert centrepiece.
Tjoe decided to leave everything on the table, creating a Veggie Garden Party She used bread to make a lattice framework and made carrot scones, with depictions of feta jalapeno pea pod tarts, hotteok Korean pancake tomatoes, and egg plant stroopwafels.
She considered it a good representa tion of her family and upbringing.
“We’re going all out,” she told the judges as she baked She said she was worried about how she’d do in the final episode but was proud of the final result. She also won first place in the Cassata cake
She said later she knew it was the last time she’d be putting something up for judging and she wanted to do her best and push herself “And I couldn’t be happier with how that all turned out,” she said.
“We are the professionals here, yet they were teaching us a lot of things today,” said judge Bruno Feldeisen
The results were announced in the garden outside the baking tent
“I don’t know what just happened This feels like a dream. It’s the best dream ever and I, like, I really don’t want to wake up, ” said Tjoe, after being named the winner
She said she’s a completely differ ent baker than she was when the show started, for which she credited her fellow bakers. Because she’s gluten intolerant, she couldn’t taste what she was making so she had to rely on her fellow bakers for feedback “I’m just really grateful for all their assistance,” she said

Former councillor honoured at 71st Hats Off to Excellence Awards gala
IAN JACQUES
Bruce McDonald’s years of service to the community, both as a resident, volunteer and civic politician was rec ognized and celebrated on Nov. 18.
The 50 plus year North Delta resident was named 2022’s Citizen of the Year at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s 71st Annual Hats Off to Excellence Awards Gala.
“When our nomina tions committee received Bruce’s name, back in September, highlighting the accomplishments he has accrued and the number of ways in which he has served throughout Delta, the committee members recognized Bruce was an excellent choice for this award,” said Chamber Executive Director Jill McKnight
In a video shared with attendees at the event, Mayor George Harvie described the recently retired nine term councillor as having enjoyed a “phenomenal political career ” and that McDonald is “well known for his common sense approach to every thing” and of “working hard to achieve what is best for the City of Delta”
in addition to his active volunteerism in Delta’s sports community as a football referee.
Coun Dylan Kruger described McDonald as “capable, compassionate, and a real leader,” and his legacy as one which includes several decades of good governance, vot ing in support of Delta residents and community service groups, and of “really having that com passion for people in need in our society.”
Recently retired from public service herself, after five terms as a Delta school board trustee, Laura Dixon described McDonald’s longtime commitment to sup porting children, youth and families throughout Delta
She spoke of meet ing him while they were advocating for the North Delta Family Resource Centre and said that “what was most evident was Bruce’s caring for people in the commu nity,” noting that “Bruce’s impact on the commu nity will be long lasting”
McDonald and his wife Barbara raised their three children in the commu nity
In addition to his years of public service, he worked in air traffic con
trol for 41 years as both an operational controller and senior manager.
“Our children are all here and I’d say that they are the most important people in my life except for my grandchildren I have quickly learned that grandchildren are the most important people in the world,” said McDonald when he accepted the award. “I have had an opportunity that very few people have
over many years. I really appreciate the fact that the people in Delta opted to keep me on board and not let me retire.”
He said a few chal lenges this year made his decision to not seek re election for a 10th term on council
“As much as I would have loved to be a part of Mayor Harvie’s team, it wasn’t possible for the next four years, ” he added. “When we first
came here I said Delta is the best part of the best part of the best part of the world I have grown to know and really appre ciate so many people who give to this commu nity and I’m sure that will go on Thank you very much. Good luck to the new council and if you want any advice…you can give me a call”

SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta optimist com
The City of Delta will be looking at how its current fireworks bylaw can be made even tougher.
Mayor George Harvie at city coun cil’s meeting on Monday announced that he has asked the city manager to coordinate a meeting with the police and fire chiefs school district to review the issue and collaborate on potential bylaw amendments
A report is to come back to council at its next meeting
The review comes following a seri ous Halloween night incident at South Delta Secondary and Dennison Park
An estimated 400 youths engaged in a wild fireworks fight that resulted in several injuries to the participants as well as police officers
Noting that some have “exhibited unprecedented, poor and dangerous behaviour related to fireworks” , Harvie noted he’s looking forward to having council meet with school trustees to look at ideas on a bylaw that is suitable for the community
Selling, possessing and transporting fireworks in Delta without a permit is
currently prohibited
Those who choose to go against the city wide ban could face a $200 fine for possession if they don’t have a permit Permits need to be obtained at least 10 days before an event and sev eral conditions must be met
It’s up to city bylaws officers and police to enforce the ban.
Following the Halloween night incident, DPD public affairs manager A/Insp James Sandberg said parents have to take a lot more responsibility.
Fire Chief Guy McKintuck also expressed concerns following the inci dent, saying there were a number of reported calls, which included several garbage can fires and one hedge fire that almost resulted in several house fires
Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord said the DPD would be working with its partners from the Delta School District and the city to further investigate this incident
The issue of fireworks is not a new one in the city as Dubord told the Delta Police Board late last year that a large number of complaints were made during Halloween 2021 and other celebration events

Tjoe said her mom and grandmother baked and that she’d been watch ing the show in previous years and tried entering as a contestant but was turned down, which was a good thing because it gave her time to improve When the pandemic hit, there was more time to bake
“I’ve always been a fan of the show so I started thinking about what I would do in certain chal lenges,” she added. With that in mind she started building up her skills
She said on the show that her parents have been supportive and it’s the first time she saw her dad cry.
Everyone poured their heart and soul into the event and if the bakers made the decision tough for the judges, they did their job, said fellow baker Chi Nguyen, add ing no one deserved the title more than Lauren
“This experience has been a total blast. I would not trade it for anything and I’m just bursting with happiness for Lauren,” added Zoya Thawer
The series was pro duced and taped over the summer in Toronto so Tjoe, 21, has not been able to talk about the final result until Sunday. That was one of the hardest parts, she said Monday “I think when I got back it was really hard to keep a secret And I’m honestly very relieved that the final episode is out and I don’t have to hold back any thing from my friends and family now ”
After completing a practicum in Toronto, she’ll return next year to finish her finance degree at UBC
Since the show, she’s continued to bake but not at the level she reached during the com petition
Tjoe added she wants to thank the Tsawwassen community and her friends for all the sup port.

Delta Council on Tuesday heard a presentation on a major redevelop ment proposed for Ladner Village, an application that’s already generated much discussion in the community
A delegation representing the propo nent of the rezoning application for the Dunbar Lumber site, at the corner of Bridge and Elliott streets, were on hand to explain the benefits of the six storey, mixed use project
It includes a courtyard style building with commercial space and parking on the ground floor, parking on the second floor and residential on the remaining four levels
Having been revised since it was originally submitted last year, the pro posal includes 129 condo units.
The presentation was an opportunity for council to ask questions in a public meeting, but not yet consider prelimi nary approval.
McGregor Wark, vice president of Headwater Projects which purchased the site earlier this year, told council that for the project to be viable, four levels of residential is needed Wark noted his company under
stands that some residents may object to the proposed building height, but it’s important to note that if the project were built away from the floodplain, it would be a four storey building with the parking below grade The proposed development would see the enclosed parking above grade
Noting his company will continue to reach out to the community as well as community groups, he added a public information meeting will be held to gather further feedback
A staff report notes the project was recently reviewed by the Economic Development Project Review Group, comprising Mayor George Harvie, Coun. Dylan Kruger and senior staff, which recommended the applicant be invited to make a presentation to council
The application generated a lot of buzz in the community including opposition from some residents who don’t like the idea of six storey build ings in the village Those in favour say the development would create more affordable housing options for the area
The application does not require an official community plan amend ment following the approval of the new Ladner Village Area Plan in 2021

Bus travelling from Whistler to Vancouver with 35 passengers when pulled over
BRENT RICHTER North Shore News
A commercial bus driver from Delta is facing charges after being caught driving while intoxicated with a load of passengers, West Vancouver police say.
The incident happened on Aug. 5, according to a release from Const. Nicole Braithwaite, West Vancouver Police Department spokesperson.
The driver had 35 passengers on board travelling from Whistler to Vancouver
Around 9:30 p.m , one of the passengers called police when they noticed the driver appeared to be intoxicated and driving erratically.
West Van officers pulled the bus over on the Upper Levels Highway just outside Horseshoe Bay and took the driver into custody for a breathalyzer test, which confirmed the passenger ’ s suspicions
The coach company sent another
driver to the bus to get the passengers safely back on the road.
On Oct 26, the Crown swore two charges against 65 year old Craig Randle
He is facing one count of impaired driving and one count of operating a vehicle while over .08 blood alcohol level.
Randle made his first court appear ance on Nov. 2 and is due back in North Vancouver provincial court later this month.
“The West Vancouver Police continue targeted enforcement against impaired drivers” Braithwaite said in a release “In this case, we are fortunate that an alert citizen notified us to this serious public safety risk That, combined with the quick action of our officers, resulted in the bus being stopped before a serious incident could occur ”
Anyone who witnesses or suspects someone of driving while impaired, should call 911 immediately,

Celebrating business
Editor’sNote
IAN JACQUES
It’s a night for the business community to come together and celebrate amongst their peers and colleagues.
I love evenings like this and look forward to the Hats Off to Excellence Awards this year the 71st annual event hosted by the Delta Chamber of Commerce.
I always learn a little something about what makes our business com munity tick, what makes our business community so special.
I have lived in Delta for only six years, but the business commu nity and their resiliency and ability to adapt and change continues to impress me every day.
Friday night’s awards gala was no different.
From the presentations to the six individual awards to this year ’ s Citizen of the Year, there is so much to be proud of and celebrate here in Delta.
Bruce McDonald is a great choice for Citizen of the Year. Living in North Delta for 50 plus years, he was on council for nine terms. The job is never easy and requires lots of behind the scenes work in order to make the decisions at the council table
Over the years, McDonald also served his community as a volun teer as a football referee and other endeavours that helped make our community thrive and prosper
Now retired, McDonald deserves a hearty thanks and congratulations for his dedicated service
Shop local
As we enter the Christmas shop ping season, here is another remind er to continue to support our local business community
We are blessed to have a diverse and unique number of shops and services in Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta to ensure that you have great gifts for all your family and friends under the tree on Christmas morning
The Ladner Business Association hosted a fabulous Christmas open house last week The streets and shops were packed and full of energy. It was great to see the support and the festive spirit. Here’s hoping that continues throughout our commu nity in the weeks to come.

Finding what matters during the holidays takes some effort in a crowded commercial world
We are heading into the silly season, at least that’s what I call it A time for excessive consumption and indulgence.
I am guilty as charged, and every year I struggle to find a balance between the job of Christmas, versus the joy of Christmas
The holiday hype starts ear lier and is getting more extrava gant with no increased value in sight, just one long road to our credit cards
We can no longer be sur prised when Costco is sell ing Christmas wrapping paper in September, and that holiday displays are up before Remembrance Day.
Take a drive at night in early November and you’ll see deco rated trees in living room win dows and outdoor Christmas lights
Now that trees are plastic we don’t have to worry that the needles will fall off, and LED’s burn brighter and longer.
My social media feeds are packed with Black Friday sales two weeks before American
INGRID ABBOTT
Thanksgiving.
I understand the shopping hype because holiday spending is crucial for retailers’ survival They need our urge to splurge
My mailbox and inbox is overflowing with requests for donations. There is so much need in society that it is impera tive we share our wealth with the less fortunate, if we can When the Christmas lights at the mall aren’t blinding me I see a world where people are vulnerable with some barely hanging on One afternoon last month
I was waiting at a red light at 12th Avenue and 56th Street. A young woman clutching a tiny
dog, was walking in the middle of traffic.
She was dazed and confused, maybe high on drugs or just dis traught The light turned green and I lost track of her in my rear view mirror. I hoped someone would come to her aid
The image of the woman has been hard to let go, she was suffering like many in our com munity who are feeling anxious in a changing world
We are fighting new battles we didn’t see coming, and old ones we can’t solve. Exorbitant living costs, climate change, war in the Ukraine, and a drug addiction epidemic
Come December many of us are pressured to produce a per fect holiday when finances are tight and expectations are high. Resist the draw of the commer cial.
Remember what really mat ters, time with family and friends, simple gifts, char ity towards others and most importantly not pressuring yourself to have the perfect holiday.

I would like to commend Denise Lockyear and Frank Buonanno for their respective letters, (Optimist, Nov. 17) putting some semblance of sanity into the fiasco created by Tsawwassen teens and their parents on Halloween
Denise made great points re: D M Johnson’s lame excuses in his letter of Nov 10 and other points on needing to change when the status quo is obvi ously not socially acceptable I only hope Delta Police can learn
Editor:
It has been almost a month since a member of our family collapsed in the doorway at 8 p.m Waiting in the dark for emergency care, it was a welcome sight to see three paramedics jump from a fire truck and rush to help. Thus began our journey.
The firefighters were kind and efficient and exuded calm So it was with every person we met over the following hours before his transfer to Surrey Memorial.
The 911 operator, the paramedics, the ambulance crews and the staff of Delta Hospital emergency department all were kind, proficient and professional. For
from this mess and beef up enforce ment of the ban on fireworks.
In my opinion, there should only be three permitted displays; one each for Ladner, North Delta and Tsawwassen This would free up most of the des ignated force to respond to illegal events An example must be made to awaken people to the consequences of all crimes There is no other criminal offence that you can buy permission to ignore

a small hospital like Delta, the level of care in the E.R is beyond measure They literally saved a life that night. We feel very lucky to live in a small community blessed with this kind of expertise and devotion.
As a suggestion, it would be wonder ful if another walk-in clinic was available in Ladner/Tsawwassen. The present clinics are excellent, but they operate with restricted numbers and restricted hours, and none are in Tsawwassen. If we had a clinic that was open into the evenings and able to deal with urgent care, it would help to relieve the waiting times for our E.R.

“Lest we forget” is a phrase that is said all around us on Remembrance Day But, what does it really mean remember? Why do we celebrate this day? Why do we take a moment of silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month?
As we sit in the warmth of our homes, our family around us, food on our tables, clothes on our backs, we must remember. We must remember the soldiers that sacrificed their lives such a short time ago so that we could have our freedom today
We must remember the mothers that spent their days wondering if their sons were alive so that we could have our family around us.
We must remember the wives that stole glances at the front door, awaiting
their husbands’ return so that we could always be with our loved ones
We must remember the children that yearned for an embrace from their fathers who had gone far away so that we could always have our parents with us We must remember their sacrifices We must remember their goals. We must remember the risks they took
We must remember how they fought for the vision of a better world
The strong and independent Canada we see today is built from the sacrifices of these soldiers Our country repre sents our beliefs, our values, our faith, and our perseverance Though we grieve the lost soldiers, we must respect their bravery and determination We must show them the peaceful world they fought for

Yes, the criminals are winning
Editor:
Good to read your editorial note in the paper (Optimist, Nov 17)
Often missing in our discussion of “societal challenges” is that there are real criminals out there......individuals that cause pain and suffering to others
These individuals need consequences for their bad behaviour that include being locked up and other privileges’ being limited.
Thanks for taking a stand on this issue!

A video of the incident showed the man shoving display cases and equipment over the counter
VICKI HUI Richmond News
A Delta man has pleaded guilty to a violent outburst at the Ironwood Plaza McDonald’s back in 2021 that was caught on a viral TikTok video William David Scott Jolly appeared by video before Richmond Provincial Court on Wednesday morning. He was originally scheduled to appear for a trial expected to last two and a half days, but instead pleaded guilty to three counts: mischief over
$5,000, assault with a weapon and assault of a peace officer
According to the Crown, Jolly had knocked over a hand sanitizer stand after waiting some time to be served at the McDonald’s on July 27, 2021.
The manager then refused to serve Jolly and offered to give him a refund, at which point Jolly proceeded to “destroy various pieces of equipment” Repairs for such equipment amounted to around $8,300
During Jolly’s outburst, he pushed items onto the manager, causing her to

Every year, they show up, in growing numbers, looking for an easy living on the West Coast.
And there’s not much farmers, or anyone else can do, when the flocks of snow geese drop in for the winter and spend their time in a local field
The numbers of the snow white geese spend ing the winter in Delta or Richmond has grown in recent years, says Connor Hawey, biologist with the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust
“I think there’s a gen eral trend, over the past couple of decades of increasing snow geese in Delta,” Hawey said
The populations fluc tuate every year and they don’t yet know about this year ’ s numbers
“But the long term trend is an increase, for sure, ” Hawey said
The farmland trust has been studying snow geese movements and population for years and he says one possible reason for seeing larger flocks here is simply because the snowbird population in general is growing
According to the most recent count, done in 2021, the snow goose population on Wrangel Island in Russia, the main summer home for the birds, is about 624,000
The birds spend the warm season on Wrangel Island, then migrate in October to
southwest B C , mainly in Delta and Richmond.
Westham Island, Sea Island and west Delta are favourite spots, but sometimes, they also go to Surrey and Abbotsford Others also move on to Washington State or California By March, the birds are heading back up north
The guests stay in their winter retreats only as long as it’s comfortable. If it gets too cold in B C , as happened last December, they’ll fly farther south into the U.S.
The birds are unpre dictable and there’s not much farmers can do but hope it’s not their turn to host the birds If a flock decides to descend on a particular field and gets into heavy grazing, they can strip the field bare.
“But the extent of graz ing kind of varies from year to year, ” Hawey explained. “Last year, we found relatively little grazing compared to pre vious years ”
He said that could
have been because of the cold forcing the birds far ther south.
The geese like the marshy areas along with the fields, near the water They’ll settle on to forage fields or fields with cover crops, that is, grasses such as rye, oats or bar ley, radishes or sunflow ers that protect the soil. But they also don’t mind helping themselves to the leftovers on a recently harvested potato field.
Sometimes, a flock will go on to a field just to rest, Hawey pointed out Reactions from farm ers varies, he added
“The snow birds are going to be in this area no matter what, so it’s kind of about managing our interactions with them,” he said.
One recent change in the behaviour of the snow geese in the past few years is the geese moving on to forage on farmers’ fields at night time That could be to avoid duck and geese hunters, he said.

Last year, Keldon Olmstead ran around Tsawwassen every day during November This November, he’s doing the same, with the goal of raising $2,500 for Movember Canada
“I think I raised around $2,000, last year I’m setting a goal for $2,500 this year, ” said the 21 year old Tsawwassen resident.
Movember Canada raises funds for prostate and testicular cancer and men ’ s mental health.
“I know a couple of people who’ve had pros tate cancer before And then I’ve also battled
with mental health in my past couple years. I’m doing well now I just felt like it’s a nice thing to do for other guys across the world,” he said last week
Olmstead is putting a slightly different twist to the Move for Movember challenge where partici pants run or walk 60 kilo metres during the month of November, in recogni tion of the 60 men who kill themselves every hour, around the world
Instead, Olmstead is tripling that, running 180 kilometres this month, based on a daily run of six kilometres
“Six kilometres a day for the 60 men we lose every hour. So that’s where the six kilometres
comes into play,” he said.
Olmstead is also grow ing a moustache for the month, the main way Movember raises aware ness and funds for men ’ s health.
Anyone who wants to donate can go to ca movember com, hit the Donate button and then search for Keldon Olmstead’s name, and send in a donation under his name All donations will go to the foundation, with proceeds helping support 1,250 projects worldwide for men ’ s health

Women Helping Women in 13th year of giving back
PHIL MELNYCHUK Contributing Writer
Getting through the pressures of the holidays can be tough for anyone, but it can be really challenging if you ’ re strug gling and for one reason or another don’t have money for the basics so that you can take care of yourself as well
That’s where Women Helping Women steps in.
Since 2010, the South Delta based group has been helping by collecting personal care and wellness items and distributing them to needy women throughout Metro Vancouver
One woman ’ s message after receiving a gift package appears on this year ’ s pub licity poster
“I received a package one year It made more of a difference than anyone could know…
“I knew I wasn’t forgotten and that somehow I mattered. I learned when I take care of me, I can do better for oth ers, ” said the woman.
“The gift went far beyond a few prod ucts in a bag … I think you tossed some hope in there too”
Pindi Mann said the initiative is main
ly based in South Delta
“We love that this initiative is some thing that all ages are involved in,” said Mann “Times are tough for many in our community this year, so we don’t think we’ll make the 1,000 mark this year, ” she said.
Still, they hope to put together several hundred gift packages in now their 13th year
The packages are given out at shelters, second stage housing and to women who’ve been referred by local agencies
Women Helping Women is looking for new items, in unopened packages, such as shampoo and conditioner, razors and shaving cream, socks and mittens, sani tary pads and tampons, hair brushes, body washes and tooth brushes
Donations of such items can be dropped off until Saturday at Muddy River Landing, the Royal Canadian Legion and Ladner Village Arts and Crafts in Ladner; and at Locks N Lashes, Deas Island Dance, Beauty Babe Studio, Myne Salon and Yoga Union in Tsawwassen. They can also be delivered to a house at 4400 63A St Donations can be made on at: gofundme.com/ womenhelpingwomensince2010

Existing mortgage on title
If an existing mortgage exists on the property, the lender must agree to the change and may even want to interview your child and review their financial situation If the bank agrees, your child will automatically become equally responsible for this debt which could ultimately affect their credit rating
Children’s future financial woes
If your child takes financial risks or is currently in financial trouble take a pass Your child’s debts can be attached to your property and may include CRA debts, bankruptcy, and future lawsuits
Spousal relationship
Your child’s partner may have their own ideas about joint ownership and may decide to pressure your son or daughter into doing irrational things in order to protect their inheritance Also with divorces on the rise there is a chance that your precious home could end up being considered an asset shared by your child’s ex spouse Talk about awkward!

Christmas: How soon is too soon?
Recently, I had tuned into a local call in radio show. The subject of discussion was: “How early should we start Christmas?” The question was posed in light of an Instagram post by English singer and television per sonality, Stacey Solomon, indicating that she had her tree up and decorated six weeks in advance
Most callers agreed that six weeks was just too soon. Many retailers would surely beg to differ I can’t blame them. The holidays are a profitable time, and many liveli hoods depend on retail success especially in the current economic climate and in light of the restrictions we have had to live with over the last couple of years, many folks will undoubtedly be jumping into festive mode as soon as they can But, in the frenzy of holiday excitement, more than a few will surely feel burnt out by the time Santa

It is the season of anticipation, when Christians are invit ed to anticipate Christ’s arrival in history, in the future, and into our pres ent It is a time to prayer fully contemplate the arrival of Jesus, Emmanuel “God With Us” into our lives and into the world, to tune into his promise and his teachings Over the next month we will be bombarded with a sugary excess of manufactured cheer that will overshadow the story that ought to stand at the heart of Christmas a refugee family fleeing persecution, and a child who will emerge from the manger to be the Saviour of all people. So, if you are feeling overwhelmed, my advice is as follows: tune out all the noise, and quietly, contemplatively anticipate

Get out your placards and protest songs, because it’s time to step back in time and carry a banner with Delta Youth Theatre’s production of Disney’s Newsies Jr playing from Dec 2 to 11 at the South Delta Secondary’s Equinox Theatre
Audiences of all ages will be inspired by this rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic news boy and leader of a band of young newsies in Manhattan, New York, in the 1890s. When titans of publishing raise news paper prices at the newsies’ expense, Jack rallies young workers from across the city to strike against the unfair condi tions and fight for their rights Adapted especially for young performers, this musical is packed with non stop musical theatre thrills, amazing sets, features a Tony Award winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein Newsies JR offers a timeless message of hope that’s perfect for the whole family as the holi day season nears.
The 90 minute musical, designed for young performers, is directed by Tony Barton and Tracy Neff and is based on the 1992 Disney film Newsies and the 2012 Broadway production of the same name.
The cast includes 78 young actors plus some special alumni and guests
“I watched the original Disney movie on VHS when I was young and now 30 years later, these
young performing arts students are watching the Broadway ver sion of the show on Disney Plus, belting out the songs and con necting to the story I think we can call that an enduring clas sic,” said Neff.
It’s a tough world that Kelly and his fellow newsies orphaned and homeless inhab it; in a time when child labour was common place
“Our keyword for Newsies is ‘grit’ . We are trying to get stu dents to connect to a way of life where hard working young people were exploited,” added Barton “Where they had no rights or freedoms and no guar antee that their basic needs would be met.”
Ironically, Barton and Neff reveal that while directing the show they were asked to fill out a couple of reference letters for graduating students and one of the questions they were asked to speak to was the students’ ‘grit’ Neff said the directing team had never seen this character trait highlighted in the past
“It made us realize that the world is not only wanting to watch actors personify this quality on stage, but is asking us as educators to support and encourage this type of courage and resolve in young people,” she said.
DYT not only attracts stu dent performers from Delta but boasts young talent from Langley, Richmond, Vancouver, North Vancouver, New Westminster, Coquitlam and
Surrey.
As always, Neff and Barton credit the success of DYT pro ductions to the incredible sup port of its production team, staff, volunteers, students and parents including so many past
Delta students and families who helped to build DYT

Delta concert band is back with Christmas concerts
It will soon be Christmas time and once again Delta Concert Band, an eclectic 40 mem ber group of highly skilled adult amateur musicians from throughout the Lower Mainland, is about to launch its latest Yuletide performance season.
This annual celebration of music amid mistletoe and holly begins at 2:30 p m on Saturday, Nov 26 at KinVillage, 5410 10th Ave., in Tsawwassen, where the band will play a varied program of Christmas favourites and other toe tapping tunes
After that, DCB will join forces with the community’s other
active concert band, the Delta Music Makers, for what has become an annual Christmas concert tradition which begins at 7:30 p m , in Ladner Community Centre (4734 51st St ), on Tuesday, Dec 6 DCB’s Holiday performance season wraps up with a final concert at the new North Delta Arts Centre (11425 84th Ave ) on Tuesday, Dec 13, with the downbeat set for 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation at all three concerts and the final two performances are spon sored by the City of Delta Not surprisingly, entertain
ing Delta residents during Christmas as well as year round is certainly nothing new for DCB, which recently marked its 58th anniversary That makes it one of B.C.’s oldest community concerts bands still performing today.
It was formed on Oct 29, 1964 in Ladner by a small group of dedicated and community minded musicians And from its early days until today, the band always maintains a high stan dard in musical performance.
It also excels and prides itself at being able to play all types of music swing, rock, classical,
marches, musicals, movie scores or pops
And while its members, who range in age from 18 to 90 years, come from a wide variety of occupations and profes sions, under Music Director Jim Tempest they quickly meld into a cohesive ensemble that consis tently presents an entertaining repertoire that always has some thing for everyone
Tempest joined Delta Concert Band as Musical Director in the fall of 2006 and has long been active as a professional musi cian and educator in the Lower Mainland

The number of households with a single person living alone has increased considerably over the last half century plus
Statistics Canada says 13 percent of the Canadian population is comprised of single people living alone.
Various factors have contributed to the rise in the number of single people living alone For example, delaying marriage is a growing trend Today, the median age to get married for men is 30 4 years and 28 6 for women In addi tion, more seniors are living longer, and may be outliving spouses Some people are simply opting not to get married, as neither men nor women are expected nor required to have a partner accord ing to current societal norms
With so many people living alone, a refresher course in solo safety could be in order
Here are some tips for single living
*Adopt a dog. The general consensus is a dog is not only a companion but a safety precaution Dogs are in tune to sounds and disturbances, which can alert owners if and when things are awry at home. Dogs, particularly those
who bark when someone is at the door, are built in alarm systems. Criminals may be less likely to target a home where a dog is present, even if the dog isn’t perceived to be aggressive
*Get to know your neighbors.
Singletons should make it a point to become familiar with their neighbors. This way they can learn schedules and alert one another if something seems
out of sorts A good neighbor will check in on another person if he or she hasn’t seen that person around in some time, which could help in the event of an injury or illness
*Invest in smart technology. Smart home technology can run the gamut from motion activated cameras to remote operated lights and thermo stats This enables the home to be safe
and secure, and even appear occupied when a person isn’t home
*Don’t advertise that you’re single. Those who live alone should not make a point of advertising it. For example, list “Smith Residence” on a lobby mail box in an apartment complex rather than a single name Avoid telling too many people you ’ re single, as word can get around and it is impossible to know who will find out That includes spread ing word online through social media
*Upgrade locks and doors. Invest in more complex locks and deadbolts as well as security doors to add an extra layer of security to a home. Such locks are only effective when inhabitants remember to lock their doors at night and when leaving their home
*Develop an emergency exit plan. No one is coming to a person ’ s aid when he or she lives alone That means a singleton must develop and rehearse emergency exit protocols that involve getting out of the home safely In addi tion, one should pack emergency sup plies and a go bag in case a fast exit is necessary

New osteoarthritis program now being offered in Delta
A program that was made popular in Denmark for people dealing with knee or hip osteoarthritis is now avail able in Canada, including three loca tions in Delta.
GLA:D Canada is an eight week education and exercise program for those with stiff or painful knees or hips. Research from GLAD in Denmark showed participants report ed less pain, reduced use of pain kill ers, fewer individuals on sick leave and being more physical active
GLA:D Canada is made up of three parts:
Two to three 90 minute educa tional sessions will teach participants about osteoarthritis, risk factors and symptoms; current available treatment for osteoarthritis; how to manage your symptoms; why and how exercise can help with your osteoarthritis; and how to cope with daily activities associated with osteoarthritis.
Twelve neuromuscular exercise
sessions features six minute group classes, twice weekly for six weeks, led by a certified therapist Participants will learn how to control your move ments and proper posture; build mus cular strength through functional exer cises; and learn how to apply these exercises to everyday activities
Data collection for quality moni toring measures progress after one, three and 12 months. This informa tion to understand how the program is working for people with osteoarthritis across Canada and what improve ments can be made
The program is provided in a group session to minimize cost at $20 per session.

Senior girls volleyball team off to provincials in Prince George next week ranked No 5 in BC
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta optimist com
Keeping the latest respira tory virus away from her play ers is probably a bigger con cern for coach Michaela Staller these days than who her next opponent might be.
With just eight players, Staller’s Southpointe Academy senior girls volleyball team is enjoying a fantastic season.
The Titans’ latest accomplishment was win ning the South Fraser “A” Championship on their home floor Wednesday night with a 3 2 come from behind thriller (22 25, 25 16, 24 26, 25 23, 15 10) over rival Surrey Christian. The near three hour marathon featured the fifth and sixth ranked teams at the “A” classification, designated for province’s smallest schools.
Both teams are headed to the B.C. “A” Championships, slated for Dec 1 to 3 at Cedars Christian School in Prince George
The Titans have also punched well above their weight class all season The Tsawwassen independent school finished second in the Sur Del Tier One League with
an 8 1 record, getting a steady diet of much larger schools They also were third at the recent Delta Cup, placing right behind the South Delta Sun Devils and Seaquam Seahawks The impressive results reflect the time Staller has put
into the program and having to be creative by aging some students up in order to have a senior team
She is also committed to the sport at the club level, as are most of her players.
“This is the smallest team we
have had yet, with three Grade 10s, three Grade 11s and two Grade 12s Five of the eight play club volleyball and anoth er one used to, so just about everyone ’ s had some kind of coaching outside of school,” explained Staller “They are all
buying in. We’re just encour aging the kids to stick with it We also run fun things at the school twice a month for the younger ones just to get them involved”
Grade 11 left side hitter Lucie Shaver was named South Fraser MVP while Grade 12 middle Avery Shin and Grade 10 Natalie Longo were selected as all stars The team also features Sara Croy, Mariam Hamza, Savanna Chahal, Kitty Song and Louisa Gong
Staller is unsure what her team is up against at the pro vincials, having not faced most of the participating teams this season.
“We just haven’t had too many games against other single ‘A’ schools It’s just the nature of our league (playing against mostly larger schools) although we were fortunate that both Surrey Christian and White Rock Christian opted to play tier one this year as well,” she added “I do know going into a tournament we will have to play eight games (in three days) with eight kids, so they will be running on fumes
Everyone plays and everyone contributes It’s been that way all season ”
Overtime thriller ends Sun Devils’ football season in Chilliwack
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta optimist com
All season long, the South Delta Sun Devils had a knack of playing up to the level of their opponent This time it brought them agonizingly close to a trip to B C Place Stadium
The Sun Devils’ 2022 campaign ended with an epic 48 47 provincial AAA quarter final playoff loss last Friday in Chilliwack to the GW Graham Grizzlies Twice, South Delta had the defending
B.C. champions and No. 2 ranked team on the ropes With under 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, quarter back Kenny Scott scored his third major of the night on a determined 12 yard run to tie the game at 41 41 The ensuing convert attempt was blocked.
The teams then headed to overtime where each got to scrimmage from the 10 yard line The Grizzlies scored a converted touchdown on their posses sion. Following a procedure call, the Sun Devils answered when Scott hit Oskar
McPhie from 15 yards out. South Delta opted to go for the two point convert and the win from the three yard line. Scott’s pass was tipped and intercepted to end one of the most thrilling B.C. High School Football games played in years
“Really proud of how our guys com peted We left it all on the field, a lot of character shown by many of our players battling through injury but in the end we came up just short,” said Sun Devils head coach Ray Moon.
A wild opening quarter featured four
majors, including Scott firing TD passes to McPhie and Sjoberg from 10 and 20 yards out respectively. The Grizzlies then opened up a 27 14 lead before an 18 yard run from Ryan Roberts cut into the deficit before halftime
South Delta continued the momen tum in the second half as a pair of majors on short runs by Scott gave the visitors their first lead of the night at 35 27 GW Graham replied with 14 unanswered points, setting the stage for the nail biting finish

Delta Pacers are taking their season to Kelowna after battling their way back to a bronze medal finish at last week’s South Fraser AAA Boys Volleyball Championships
The Ladner school avenged its only loss of the tournament with a win over the Steveston London Sharks on Thursday in Richmond The Pacers have been a fixture in the provincial rankings all season, climbing as high as No. 5 two weeks ago. However, their lofty status meant little in a highly com petitive zone that featured five of the top 10 ranked teams in B C , including No 2 and eventual champion McMath Wildcats from Steveston.
Delta opened the championships with a four set loss to the Sharks, resulting in a must win on Tuesday against Semiahmoo in consolation play A straight set victory set the stage for Wednesday’s home match against Seaquam, marking the fourth time the cross town city rivals have squared off with the Seahawks winning each of the earlier meetings
This time, the Pacers rose to the occasion in a big way, capturing the
opening two sets (27 25, 25 18) then sealing a huge 3 1 triumph with a 26 24 fourth set win to clinch a B C berth
According to head coach Andrew Robson, the key to the big bounce back was not hitting the panic button after
the opening night loss
“That was the message the whole time We knew we were going to have to beat one if not two of the top 10 teams in the province and that was kind of a task. The nice part about the structure
of the tournament is that you do get two chances and I told them after the loss they just needed to get better over the next three days and that’s exactly what they did,” said Robson.
“I think the boys were pretty hun gry for (Seaquam) and there’s never a shortage of motivation playing your crosstown rival I think we probably also benefited from them coming off a semi final loss and needing to bounce back. Thursday was a full team effort. We had a couple of guys with standout performances of their season. Everyone was just feeding off each other We’re very proud of the bronze medal and excited about the provincials”
Robson figures his team will be seed ed between fifth and eighth in Kelowna, meaning an important day one of power pool play is required to set them up for the playoffs
Quincy Wong was named to the tour nament all star team The roster also features Tyler Jones, Lucas Malinek, Amir Schurr, Angelo Falcos, Dylan Archbold, Liam Froude, Lukas Oldham, Macin MacDonald, Nate Kirkbride, Nick Regalado and Simon Tate.
The DSS junior boys team is in Kamloops this week for the B.C. Invitational Championships
