Dog was found clinging to a log in the Fraser River

After escaping the floods of the torrents of atmospheric river, Connie has a home

She was found clinging to a log, and to life, on a log boom in the Fraser River, a year ago after last November’s atmospheric river pounded Metro Vancouver

But finally, Connie, a chocolate coloured mastiff mix dog who weighs in at more than 45 kilograms, may have her forever home

A family who’d previously looked at Connie, have now returned and the adoption process is underway, said Delta Community Animal Shelter manager Ryan Voutilainen

Connie has been at the centre for a year, virtually since the disastrous weather that hit the region

To celebrate, staff dressed up Connie and had a “pity party,” to celebrate her year and posted it on Facebooks

“We’re not really sure how she made it here,” said Voutilainen

Despite contacting other shelters, no one ever came forward to claim the dog

He acknowledged that a year is a long time for a dog to be in a shelter but added that Connie, who’s still young at between one and two years old, is doing well in a shelter envi ronment, though she does have some issues

Connie’s excitable and energetic, loves to play with toys and to be around people

But she likes to jump up, and yip when she’s trying to see something and pulls on the leash However, thanks to a dedicated routine and some anxiety medication, she’s been able to relax, which has helped her training a lot, said the shelter

Having a proper home should allow for more stability than a shelter can offer That also could allow a weaning off of the medica tion as well

Although Connie’s adoption seems immi nent, Voutilainen said there have been other inquiries after Connie’s one year anniversary in the shelter was covered in other media.

But before then, there wasn’t much inter est.

“She’s a large, black dog,” he said People usually are looking for smaller dogs

“It’s more because of her size that’s really the hardest thing to try and find her a home”

As the pandemic wanes and the costs of inflation increase, more people are giving up their pets and fewer are adopting.

Currently, four dogs are awaiting adop tion at the Delta Community Animal Shelter, while there are also two, high need stray dogs at the shelter

Last summer, two dogs which had collars and leashes on, were found in North Delta But no one has stepped forward to claim them Another two dogs were left tied up out side the shelter, for staff to find upon opening in the morning

Alex Fraser Bridge and Massey Tunnel southbound were closed at one point

Yes, it was a nightmare Tuesday night for Lower Mainland commuters, includ ing those trying to drive through Delta.

The City of Delta on Facebook on Tuesday noted crews were hard at work prepar ing roads for the “upcoming snowfall this evening” but blow ing snow began in the after noon, becoming heavy by late afternoon and into the evening drive home

What faced drivers was a nightmare as many routes were crawling or at a complete stand still. The Alex Fraser Bridge for an extended time didn’t see traffic being able to get through thanks to many spun out vehicles and stuck semis. When lanes were starting to open up after midnight, drivers were warned to still expect long delays, and hours later heavy traffic continued to crawl

The George Massey Tunnel had its own problems including an accident which forced the southbound side of Highway 99

Traffic

muters attempted to get to Scott Road

closed.

It meant many hours of sitting and waiting for drivers, even well past midnight and into the overnight hours when the snow turned into a light shower

Problems persisted in the region with DriveBC on Twitter warning overnight to expect

heavy congestion. Highway 99 southbound in Delta and into South Surrey was a crawl

Ladner Trunk Road (Highway 10) heading toward Surrey was also a nightmare plus and 104th Street proved to be no shortcut at all Large groups of passen gers could be seen braving the elements at bus stops waiting for Translink buses that were running significantly behind time due to the congestion.

Kittson Parkway was a mess, with many vehicles not even able to get past the Highway 91 interchange to attempt the hill Many other drivers opted to drive on the opposite side of the

road, only to find themselves stuck behind vehicles that could not make it up.

Several good Samaritans at the hill tried pushing vehicles or shoveling around tires

While drivers without proper tires were certainly a significant factor, many on social media were highly critical of road preparations and planning by municipalities and Mainroad Contracting that serves Highway 91 and Highway 99.

According to Environment Canada’s latest forecast, Thursday night will see the tem perature dip down to 6C We could be seeing more snow on Friday

Tuesday’s snow turned Delta into a winter wonderland, but made for a nightmarish commute for many motorists.

“Thank you guys for your prepa rations Thanks to the fast action of the city, I have only been in traffic for seven hours and counting,” said Stefan Casie, commenting on the City of Delta’s Facebook page

“Yes, lots of people trapped. Five hours now my daughter left Tsawwassen Mills and is at Nordel Way and it is gridlocked and still not home,” said Brandi Morin.

Another motorist asked what was being done to open the Alex Fraser Bridge saying his two family members have been stuck in traffic for eight hours

Steven Lan, the City of Delta’s direc tor of engineering, said however that all 17 of the city’s plow and salting trucks were on the roads Tuesday morning

And brining of the city’s main roads, that is, spraying salt water on to the pavement to delay ice formation, began on Sunday and was completed on Monday

But what happened Tuesday after

noon was traffic. The congestion on the roads, particularly on the Alex Fraser Bridge, also stranded the city’s trucks in the jams

In some instances, Delta police were able to escort plow trucks out of the traffic jams so they could continue their work.

“Every (vehicle) was out,” said Lan, noting the city made a mistake on its Facebook page when it said the snow was falling in the evening when it should have said afternoon

“We actually had trucks out, start ing in the morning in anticipation of the snowfall All of our trucks and our entire fleet was out, ready for the snowfall,” Lan said

“There was a great deal of conges tion that happened, coming off from the bridges. There was just a lot of gridlock in the system We did the best that we could. We had all of our equip ment out”

A major cause of the jam ups was the complete closure of the Alex Fraser Bridge in both directions, just after 8 p m , because of “several vehicle inci dents,” according to DriveBC

One northbound lane opened about an hour later but all southbound lanes remained closed until just before 1 a m , when one southbound lane opened.

His top priority will be to hold the line on spending and slow down tax increases on residents.

That’s what Delta Mayor George Harvie told the Optimist following the Metro Vancouver Board of Directors electing him as the new board chair for 2023

“I think it’s a tremendous honour to be voted in the chair position by my fel low directors, the mayors and councillors from across the region. It’s a challenging position and I’m really looking forward to taking that challenge on, working with the directors and vice chair (Village of Anmore Mayor John McEwen) to accom plish a lot of things we need to do as a group, especially looking at our fiscal situation,” Harvie said

He noted it will be important to keep regional district costs down as much as possible to within realistic levels for Metro Vancouver homeowners.

“The five year financial plan shows the cumulative increase to the homeowner in Metro Vancouver is 57 4 per cent I couldn’t accept that and that is the rea son I ran for chair, to try to make a differ ence using my many years in local gov ernment I’m going to be putting together

a very good task force and work with the committees to bring back options for the board to consider,” he said

The projected sharp rise in utilities is among the concerns that had been con veyed by Delta Council

A Metro update report this year to the City of Delta notes regional district staff have been working with the province to move forward legislative changes to allow the Greater Vancouver Water District to collect Development cost charges (DCCs) under the Local Government Act.

With growth projects comprising 54 per cent of the long term water capital program, getting a growth driven revenue stream in place soon is critical, the report notes, adding that the work to date has included initial engagement, industry capacity analysis and rate modelling resulting in a set of draft DCC rates in principle for consultation.

After further stakeholder input, a final ized DCC program is to be brought to the Metro board and province for approval

Also, according to the regional district, in the coming weeks, Harvie will deter mine the standing committees and their membership, which will then consider priorities, policies, and activities for the organization, and make recommenda tions to the board which meets once a month.

Snowangelsarereadyto helpsenior homeowners

Snow angels are on standby to help those in the city who can’t shovel their sidewalks or driveways

So far, people in 20 homes in Ladner have signed up for the City of Delta’s snow angel program in which volun teers are recruited to be on standby to clear the driveways and sidewalks of senior homeowners

In Tsawwassen, another 24 homes have volunteers ready to help out once the snow flies, while in North Delta, another 50 homes have volunteers assigned, with 18 homes on the wait list for a snow angel.

The volunteers are sent out to those homes anytime five or more centime tres of snow falls To be eligible for the help, residents must be 65 or older, with physical limitations and with no one in the home or nearby who can help out

Mike Scanlan is one of the snow angels who’s ready for whatever this winter brings.

“So I will put my shovels in the car to be at the ready tomorrow if anything happens,” he said Monday

Scanlan has been a snow angel shov elling sidewalks and driveways in North Delta for about eight years The city plans it so that most homes are within walking distance of his own home

He considers himself lucky to be in good health and he keeps active, so he wants to help those who aren’t as lucky.

And he notes that he takes his time when shovelling.

“I think I’ve got a few more years left in me anyways, ” he said.

“And I’m going to be old one day myself, so what the heck,” said the 75 year old

But he has no difficulty getting around and it’s fun to get a reaction when people ask him why he’s shovel ling snow at his age.

“We try to keep this kindness ball rolling,” he added.

The city is also welcoming anyone else who wants to become a snow angel, with community groups encour aged to sign up.

People can sign up online, delta ca/ city hall/working delta/volunteering/ snow angels program

Snow angels must also bring their own snow shovels

A recent carving from Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) artist Karl Morgan is now posted outside the Global Container Terminals Deltaport opera tions

And its message is to care for the water, so it can continue to be fished and worked on

“And I hope that it inspires everybody who sees it, to stop and remember that the Salish Sea needs to be protected and cared for In return, we will still be able to fish, to work on the waters and have it pollution free as possible,” Morgan said in a video that was made as he carved the house post

He added that he has been carving for about 35 years.

“Through carving, you really learn more about all aspects of the culture. You learn about the language You learn about traditions. Your learn about protocol and you learn a lot about your entire culture, so I’ve appreciated that very much,” Morgan said

Staff from both GCT and TFN gath ered at the unveiling of the house post outside GCT Deltaport’s administrative building last month

The house post is made of red cedar and titled the Salish Sea Spirit and features an orca breaching the water, over which is positioned an eagle with a salmon

GCT posted the video on YouTube saying the house post was raised to

bring awareness to the land on which it’s located

“Given GCT Deltaport’s distinctive location, the Salish Sea Spirit house post acts as a beacon that tells the story of two neighbours (Global Container Terminals and Tsawwassen First Nation) with shared goals for protect ing our vibrant ecosystem and building stronger relationships within our com munity,” GCT said “The legacy that Karl leaves behind with this house post acts as a momentous landmark that signifies the continuation of GCT’s and TFN’s positive relationship, built on mutual respect and a common goal to protect these lands”

Lightsfor theseason

IAN JACQUES

Christmas is significant for many things celebration, family, friends, gifts, food and of course the lights.

Anyone who knows me or my fam ily knows that no Christmas season is complete without our holiday outside illumination day

An email from my dad goes out in early October as he picks the Saturday (always in mid November after Remembrance Day) for the day we all get together for the outside festivities.

This year was Nov 12 At 9 a m myself, my dad, my brother, my brother in law and my dad’s partner (my mom passed away in 2019), all gathered on what turned out to be a glorious weather day to light up my dad’s house

The 30 plus years that we lived in Coquitlam afforded us a larger house and yard for our displays, but we still can go pretty big here in North Delta, albeit with some rules from strata

In the past couple of years, my dad, since retirement, has started the orga nization of extension cords and light strings, critter displays and signs in the days prior so the chaos is muted come illumination day

A hot bowl of chili from the crockpot in the kitchen for a quick lunch break is always part of the fun as are the hot cof fees and Bailey’s!

There is always some “tweaking” once all the lights go on that night and this year was no different as dad and I were out Sunday afternoon re wiring and re stringing a few sections He added a few signs and flood lights Monday afternoon and this year ’ s display is a wrap Go online to our website to see some pho tos with this column

Now that our festival light fun is over, we need to see your displays. So South Delta, as we have in the past, the Optimist will be presenting its annual list of light displays in our Dec 15th edi tion.

If you haven’t done so already, email us some details about your display and a few photos to be included in our list May your holiday display be extra bright this Christmas season!

Food can be under appreciated especially at this time of the year

The next few weeks will see most of us becoming exposed to expanded food eating opportuni ties At this time of year it is important to consider where our food comes from and appreciate those who work in the $16 Billion dollar food economy in British Columbia

We often take what we eat for granted but that should not be the case The dynam ics of the agri food industry are enormously complex and we should take a moment to reflect on how logistics within the food chain play out so that we can have a better under standing of broader concepts such as food security and sov ereignty

Not all of us will be enjoy ing platters of holiday goodies over the next month though. Sadly, we are not immune to food challenges in Delta.

There are families who struggle daily to find enough to eat Food bank usage has been described by Canada Food

Banks as a “storm turning in to a hurricane” .

In B C , 15 7 percent of children aged 3 11 are keeping their tummies full from food bank supplies. I know that some kids in Delta are hungry because I have seen it with my own eyes on countless occa sions When I have brought samples of food that we were to plant on school farms in Delta, I would be asked in person by the youngsters if I had more so that they could take some home On occa sions where youngsters would

put snap peas, carrots, radish or whatever in their pockets, I would discretely ask them why, and the answer was always that they were going to take it home to eat instead

After a few years I finally clued in that I would need to take much more than one item per child when I visited as it was abundantly clear that many of the young farmers were simply not getting enough to eat

From farmer to processor, from retailer to restauranteur, the delivery of our sustenance needs to be better compre hended Although food is all around us, and a part of our daily routine, it is generally under appreciated.

So when you are eating your turkey and ham, your cran berries, Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes, remember that someone, likely one of your community neighbours, took on all the risk to put these holiday delicacies on your din ing room table. And please, if you are able, consider a dona tion to the food bank this year

Gaspoweredequipment istoovaluabletoban

Editor:

Please Delta City Council, do not even consider banning gas powered equipment for landscaping purposes

Reading in the recent Optimist I have seen a couple of articles regarding ban ning gas powered tools

I have lived in Ladner since 1967 and as a young hard worker, used a “Sieth” for trimming grass. I still have it Then came the “Weed Eater” and the tranformation of what used to take days to do yard trimming into a couple of hours. I need a ride on mower to cut my grass with an average of 10 garbage cans full per week

The tools used today though some what noisy are a huge back and heart

saver, “literally.”

For people with a fair size lot, these tools are invaluable and note, the elec tric versions are nearly just as noisy and much less efficient

I just purchased an electric version of a leaf blower and hedge trimmer which takes a long time for the bat tery to charge and good for small jobs There is no real commercial version option available Keep in mind as well with the addition of thousands of trees being planted and added restrictions for tree removal the need for tools and services is only increasing We just need to follow noise bylaws Thanks for reading

Don’t always blame dogs for those droppings on the dike

Editor:

I wanted to point out that there are quite a number of coyotes in the vicin ity of the 12th Avenue dike trail

Unfortunately, the coyotes do not have human assistants to come behind them and pick up their droppings therefore the brunt of what people are mistaking for dog droppings are more than likely coyote droppings.

I know there are some dog owners

that are derelict in their duty but 98 percent are not There would have to be quite a number of these owners to leave a trail as described in one letter to the editor. Coyotes are known to leave droppings on or at the side of trails in their territory and are usually darker and denser than domesticated dog feces These definitely looked like coy ote leavings to me.

“Eastlink evaluates its offerings on a regular basis to ensure we provide the best products and services available to our customers

As more and more people leverage other email platforms that come with a broader suite of email features, we have decided to begin phasing out email as a

service for some non ‘eastlink.ca’ email customers However, DCCnet email customers are NOT impacted by this initiative at this time (and not for the foreseeable future). We apologize for any confusion”

Eastlink took over ownership of Delta Cable in 2007 and has allowed longtime customers to continue with the DCCnet email system since.

Last week, the company re opened its renovated retail location on Ladner Trunk Road

“We want people to know that our commitment to Delta is stronger than ever not only in the services we provide but also in the overall experience the community and our customers have with us, ” said Louigi Salvati, Regional Sales and Marketing Manager

“We are very pleased to grow our presence in the community with a refreshed retail location that will enable us to provide sales, service and support at the local level to our Delta customers keeping them connected to the people, places and things that mat ter most to them.”

After decades of sell ing an unknown quantity of burgers and helping numerous community groups, sports teams and charities, Steve Krawchuk is stepping away from the fast food counter

Krawchuk has owned both the Tsawwassen and Ladner McDonald’s for more than 20 years, having bought the former in 2001 and the latter in 2002

Before that, he’d worked out of the McDonald’s head office in Burnaby for 32 years in a variety of roles, after starting with the compa ny when he was 15 years old in 1969.

“I’m actually retir ing. Fifty four years is enough,” he said Friday “It was a great time for me out here in Delta”

And no, he has no esti mates on the number of Big Macs his stores have sold

“I have no idea It would be a ton,” he said.

He’s also recently sold his two McDonald’s in Richmond

While he’s retiring with a desire to spend more time with grandchildren and family and to visit Hawaii, Osoyoos and the Netherlands, he’s

going to continue serv ing on the boards of the Delta Police Foundation and the Delta Lacrosse Association where he’s also treasurer

Carlene Lewall, chair of KidSport Delta, said Krawchuk has long been a huge supporter of sports and non profit groups, adding his stores supplied snacks at Delta Gymnastics events for years Krawchuk also served as treasurer of the Delta Sports Council, Lewall added.

“He always took the time to meet and listen to find out what was hap pening. He was so sup portive of our community Steve will be missed,” Lewall said

Krawchuk credits the quality of the training he received with the com pany, in everything from product development to human resources, as a major reason for staying

“The training was exceptional along the way, ” he said.

Another reason was the company ’ s commit ment to the community and charity

“What really kept me going was I liked the work of Ronald McDonald House throughout the McDonald’s system and throughout the world,” he said.

The new owner of both Delta operations Nauman Jutt, took over on Monday, and is com mitted to carrying the tradition of giving back, Krawchuk said.

Krawchuk also lives in Delta.

“For the time I spent in the community, it’s been great You couldn’t live and work in a better place,” he said

Ladner Village will be losing a popular and long time family run business early in the new year After 27 years at their 48th Avenue location, with a combined 125+ years of experience in ladies fashion, the McKnight family have announced South Coast Casuals will be perma nently closing in March 2023.

“Thank you to the incredible community who has embraced and supported us for the past 27 years It has been an honour and privilege to be a part of the Ladner business community,” said Jill McKnight, who operated the store along with her parents Tracey and Bill McKnight

“We do not envision selling the store Over the next four months, our family and sales team look forward to seeing our cus tomers, sharing memories of their experiences at our store and thanking them for allowing us to be a part of your lives”

The McKnight family has been an integral part of the business communi

ty, helping to develop and lead many events such as the immensely popular Ladner Village Market that wrapped up its 26th season back in September

Jill is now the execu tive director of the Delta Chamber of Commerce.

“We are staying in the community so we will continue to see you around at commu nity events, at the Ladner Village Market and walking through Ladner Village,” she assured Bill and Tracey cele brated their 50th wedding anniversary last week.

In a message to their customers:

“We have been through the highs and lows of this industry We’ve seen fashion trends make full circles, even those that shouldn’t have come back again There were a num ber of considerations in making this decision to close and ultimately what they all come back to is our lives have changed over 27 years; we are all 27 years older, we are all healthy and we are ready to spend time with our grandchildren (niece/ nephew), travelling and exploring new skills and opportunities”

Kindness going a long way to support community initiatives

IAN JACQUES

The community’s gift of kindness is paying off.

The City of Delta recently announced the success so far of Delta’s Kindness Meter Program

At the Nov. 14th council meeting, acting mayor Coun Dylan Kruger announced on World Kindness Day that the program, started in 2021, has raised close to $3,000 so far to support Delta’s Emergency Weather Shelter Program and the Starfish Food Program for school aged children.

The initiative is a partnership with the Delta School District, Delta’s Community Resilience and Economic Recovery Support Team (CRERST) and the Delta Community Foundation

Aimed at supporting community resilience and promote public art, the program sees the repurposing of five decommissioned double headed parking meters obtained from another municipality to collect spare change for local service groups

To promote and encourage youth engagement and public art, local high school student artists were invited to design and paint the meters while incorporating the themes “We Love Delta” and “kindness”

The meters are located at the North Delta Social Heart, Sungod Recreation Centre, Ladner Village, City Hall and the Tsawwassen Town Centre

The artworks have been cre ated by Ava Burbank from Burnsview Secondary, Kyla Dooley from Seaquam Secondary, Claire Peters from Delta Secondary, Jill Baccay from Delview Secondary and Ella Koehn from South Delta Secondary

The Delta Community Foundation manage the collection and distribution of Kindness Meter donations on behalf of and at no cost to Delta

Christmasshoeboxcampaign nowacceptingdonations

Margaret Wong knows it’s been a tough year as rising costs and the lin gering effects of COVID-19 continue to be felt.

But that’s all the more reason to help those who are going through family stress as well.

That’s why the local realtor is repeating the Christmas shoebox campaign from last year in which she dropped off more than 100 Christmas shoeboxes filled with gifts, such as toiletries, gift cards, candy and tuques and mittens to Azure Place

“The women and children in the house have gone through so much and I would love to be able to bring some joy and hope to them,” Wong said in a email to the Optimist.

This yearshe wants to pack another 50 shoeboxes for Azure Place, a transition shelter for women and kids fleeing domestic violence, operated by the Women In Need Gaining Strength

retail store.

Pens, journals, games and colour ing books are also welcomed.

“I know, with the effect of prolonged COVID-19, as well as inflation, which increases the cost of living, this year hasn’t been easy for many, so any donation would be sincerely appreciated,” Wong said.

She has arranged the same drop-off locations as last year, although she’ll also do curbside pickups in South Delta

The drop-off locations are at: Envision Financial, 5155 Ladner

Trunk Rd.; Robertson Optical and Optometry, 5405 Ladner Trunk Rd.; Issler Mortgage Service, Ladner, 778861-0127; and at 5075 Whitworth

Cres South, in Ladner

The deadline date for donation drop-offs is Dec. 11. That way, she and her children and some other volunteers have a chance to assemble and pack the shoeboxes with all the goodies and deliver them to Azure Place by Dec. 22.

November 29, 2022

Wong is asking for donations of scarves, hats or mittens, nut-free chocolate, tea and hot chocolate mix, shampoo, body wash, lotion, sleep masks, toothpaste, makeup along with any gifts cards for fast food, coffee or

The Shoebox Program for Women was founded in 2011 in Toronto by four sisters in law who wanted to brighten up the holiday season for women living in shelters by filling up shoeboxes with gifts

Christmas is a time for renewal, and the spirit has inspired our artists at Gallery 1710 In a world where chaos has taken root in some corners of the world, our artists invite you to take a break, bring a friend, and be inspired by “Deck the Walls” , our tribute to a caring and sharing Christmas season.

The joy of flowers (by Diane Akey, Myriam Leberge and others) will inspire some, while local birds, wild animals, and pets hold pride of place, captured by Margaret Atkinson and Enya Jorge Dogs remind us of trea sured pets (by Mary Ellen Bullock) and seem to follow their human friends in the paintings. Lea Price has entered two bird houses which are works of art Wit is often a reminder that we need to smile at life Check out the camel by Ellen Hines. Gillian Olson has delightful scenes of animals with Christmas Spirit Lovely sweeping landscapes are sure to bring a smile to our viewers Monica Burrow has many lovely pieces Landscapes are pictures of familiar places in and around Delta, and Ann

Holiday tradition & key fundraiser for decades is back in operation this week at rec centre

With its recognizable scout hut in the west end of the South Delta Recreation Centre park ing lot, the 3rd Boundary Bay Scouts Christmas Tree lot has been wel coming customers for the last 50 years It is a key fundraiser for the pro gram, supporting about 130 Tsawwassen youth with special events like white water rafting, tree line adventure climbs, as well as offsetting camp costs and supplies through the year

Tree loss due to flood and heat waves have closed many fresh tree lots this season, while others have had to rely on shipments of smaller trees from Quebec that were cut a month earlier before being transported to B C

Organizers of this year ’ s Boundary Bay Scouts sale are fortunate to secure B.C. grown and freshly cut trees

“We now have two B C suppliers who make a specific point to com plete our order to keep us open Our trees are fresh cut the morning we open, ” explained Natalie Shantz. For those not looking for a Christmas tree there are other options at the lot too

Handmade wreaths by the Scouts were added last year and 100 were sold Fresh table center pieces with candles are also available for pur chase

“The wreaths and cen terpieces give them that fresh Christmas smell,” continued Shantz “Last year we started Pet/Ugly Sweater photos with Santa on Sundays which was really fun

“We had cats in sweat ers, dogs in antlers, guinea pig elves, and the Delta Police K9 Unit! People want to support our group and have come to rely on the lot for fes tive opportunities. We’ve developed a great rela tionship with the com

munity”

Shantz added three years ago a customer “paid it forward” and purchased a tree to donate to a family that visited the lot. t has cre ated a domino effect of kindness that has rippled through the community

Last year, the scouts also donated five trees to The Boys and Girls Clubs of Tsawwassen and Ladner to help make Christmas special

Completely oper ated by volunteers, the lot is open weekdays 5 to 7:30 p.m. and week ends 9 a m to 8 p m

Photos with Santa are on Sundays from 11 a m to 2 p.m. Cash or credit are accepted

Christmascardcampaign forseniorsincareunderway

Seniors in care will receive messages of love and support again this year by way of redirected Christmas cards

Rick’s Heart Foundation has put a tree up at the Tsawwassen Springs Festival of Lights.

Beside that tree is a bin to collect general ized Christmas cards that people receive from various companies or charities

Upon receiving those cards, people can write messages of support and Christmas wishes for

seniors in care and then drop those cards into the Christmas Cards For Seniors bin beside Rick’s Heart Foundation’s tree.

The cards do not need to have personal infor mation on them and they are not delivered to specific individuals, so they do not need to have a specific sender or recipient

Instead, just warm hol iday messages for seniors who may be lonely and isolated are needed

Cards will be col lected up until Dec 20 The campaign has been going for three years and in 2021, more than 500 cards were donated

Ducks Unlimited Canada

Over the last 100 years, we have trained and dredged the mighty Fraser River to suit our needs,

changing its natural pro cesses Soon, some of that change will be rolled back as part of a pilot project that hopes to bring ben efits to fish, wildlife and people where the river

meets the Salish Sea. Ducks Unlimited Canada and partners are set to begin work on the Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project to rebuild

tidal marsh resilience and support coastal flood pro tection there Beginning soon, crews will be repur posing sediment dredged from the river and placing it in key areas on Sturgeon Bank, situated next to Richmond, to restore those tidal marshes.

Fraser tidal marsh habi tats are incredibly impor tant for wildlife Hundreds of millions of out migrat ing juvenile salmon rely upon these brackish eco systems as they transition to the ocean In addition to being key to the BC economy and food sup ply, Fraser River Chinook salmon are the pri mary prey of endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. Together with Boundary Bay, the estuary is also the most important overwintering area for waterfowl and shorebirds in Canada

Estuary marshes reduce coastal flooding impacts, but science has shown that river training and dredging has deprived them of new sediments, preventing vertical growth that keeps ahead of rising sea levels By conserv ing and restoring coastal marshlands, we can miti gate damages to ecosys tems and communities at risk when storms and tides roll in.

The project is led by Ducks Unlimited Canada in partner ship with Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Tsawwassen First Nation, and the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance It is funded by the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund through Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Province of BC, with additional funding from Tsawwassen First Nation and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority Want to learn more? I often check a person ’ s hope meter Especially if they are struggling emo tionally because losing hope is like losing every thing Hope is the belief that my tomorrow will be better than my today

Psalm 42:1 says, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God”

Hope for this Christmas season Minister’s Minute

It sounds as if every thing is okay with David But it’s not

Psalm 42:3 “My tears have been my food day and night...” . When your tears are your food day and night, that means you are really suffering from hopelessness. Yet, he says he is going to remember the Lord.

Psalm 42:8 “The Lord will command His lovingkindness ” God has not done it yet, but David has confidence that He will There are times when life crumbles around you You need to take it upon yourself to look at yourself in the

ANDREAS BASSON LIFE CHURCH

mirror and speak God’s truth Encourage yourself David doesn’t deny his pain or avoid it, rather he addresses it and tells himself what to do.

Psalm 42:11 “ Hope in God…”

What changed David’s feelings of hopelessness and discouragement? He looked in a differ ent direction He looked at what God was going to do, even though he couldn’t see it at the time.

The way to overcome an emotional strong hold or hopelessness is to fast forward through the tough times the battle scenes, to the end Look toward the place where you surrender your thoughts to the love, grace, and faithfulness of God.

Whatever is going wrong in your life will not have the last word God can take a mess and make a miracle if you put your hope in Him He promises that “those who hope in Me will not be disappointed.” (Isaiah 49:23 NIV)

This Christmas season I want to encourage you to get around people who will stir up the hope of God in you Visit a church and get connect ed with the people Do not stay isolated but con nect God works through His church and I know the people will welcome and extend God’s love and hope to you

After coming ever so close a year ago, talented seniors lead SDSS to Kelowna

The South Delta Sun Devils are hoping they have saved their best for last as they take aim at provincial girls vol leyball glory starting today in Kelowna

A year ago, the Sun Devils came agonizingly close to cap turing their fourth B C title in school history, dropping a five set heartbreaker to the Riverside Rapids in Nanaimo.

South Delta was a single point away from victory when their PoCo rival rallied with three unanswered points to win the fourth set 26 24 and then went on to capture the decisive set 15 9

A number of players return ing from that team, including provincial all stars Mackenzie Campbell and Myah Cressy, along with key starter Rachel Rosser, helped propel the Sun Devils at or near the top of the provincial rankings for much of this season However, as the campaign has unfolded, the city of Kelowna has emerged as a “hot spot” for B C girls volleyball at the AAAA level for the largest schools

The Okanagan Mission Huskies now hold down the No. 1 ranking thanks to a pair of recent wins over South Delta, including the Red Serge Classic gold medal match three weeks ago in Port Coquitlam. The Huskies also happen to be hosting this year ’ s provin cial tourney Nearby rival Mt Boucherie is the No 2 seed while Riverside and Dover Bay round out the top four based on winning their zone tourna ments

The Sun Devils head to Kelowna as the No 7 seed after falling 3 1 to cross town rival Seaquam in the South Fraser

final two weeks ago They will get a significant boost with the return of Cressy from a sprained ankle she suffered in the quarter final round of the Red Serge Classic

“We’re just excited to have the opportunity to try and win the school another ban ner, ” said the versatile 6 foot Campbell who has shifted back to her natural position at set ter for her Grade 12 year after playing right outside “Getting Myah back is big because she is such a key asset to our team and we just run so much through the middle “We understand why we are (the seventh seed) but definitely are going there with something to prove. ”

A trip to Kelowna Secondary’s Best of the West

Tournament last month should be beneficial as well. South Delta lost to Okanagan Mission in the semi finals.

“It was very important to get the opportunity to go up there and play against those top teams Now we know exactly what the environment is going to be like,” added Campbell

The 16 team champion ships will open with day one of power play pool games that will determine the playoff match ups. If the Devils can sweep No 5 Seaquam, No 6 Kelowna and No. 8 Nanaimo they would move up to the No 4 seed

“Last year I thought there were maybe three or four teams that could have out right won it and this year there is like eight,” said South Delta

head coach Dan Burgess “Are we one of those eight? Absolutely If we are firing on all cylinders we can beat any one in the province but there are six or seven other teams that can do that too

“When you get to those final eight teams it’s going to be fierce so I think you really want to try and get that fourth seed. It would also tell everybody South Delta is back.”

At the net…

Kelowna is also hosting the B C Boys AAA Championships where the Delta Pacers are seeded eighth after their third place finish in the South Fraser playoffs Meanwhile in Prince George, South Fraser cham pion Southpointe Academy

Titans are seeded fifth for the B.C. “A” Girls Championships.

The South Delta Secondary graduate is now in her first year at Simon Fraser University, accepting a scholar ship offer, after being recruited by head coach Tina Andreana to be part of the NCAA Division 2 program for the 2022/23 season

The standout pitcher’s post secondary career began last fall where she had a leading role in UBC Okanagan Heat capturing the Canadian collegiate championship She was then among 32 ath letes invited to Softball Canada’s national wom en ’ s team selection camp, held in Brampton, Ont. back in June

This past summer, Johnson helped the Surrey 2003 Storm cap ture the U19 national

championship.

Her Premier’s Award culminated a process that saw The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I SPARC) receive nomi nations from each of its six regions (Fraser, Interior, Northeast, Northwest, Vancouver Coastal, and Vancouver Island) Nominations were open to Indigenous athletes under the age of 25 who have competed in performance sport, dem onstrated a commitment to their education and culture, and have pro moted healthy and active lifestyles

Six athletes were selected from each region, resulting in 36 regional recipients Of the 36 regional recipients, 10 athletes were selected as provincial recipients for the 2021 Provincial

Awards.

Johnson is joined by Kaelem Dumont (South Surrey), Felix Grant (Vancouver), Sasha Lam (Victoria), Scott Larden (Richmond), Gabrielle Papuskha (Surrey), Darius Sam (Lower Nicola), Kiera Pemberton (Langley), Nikolas Sertic (Nanaimo) and Sahara Tom (Nanaimo)

“The Premier’s Awards are a celebration of Indigenous youth excel lence on and off the field,” said Premier John Horgan “This year ’ s recipients have already achieved so much as leaders in their sport and as representatives for their community, but this is only the beginning. Congratulations on your accomplishment and know that I’ll be cheering you on from the side lines”

It s with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Nancy Chaisson She passed away peacefuly surrounded by her loving family

Nancy met and later married Lawrence, the love of her life whie skating on a frozen ake in Sant John, NB Mom and Dad were married for 42 years before hs passing n 1998

Nancy worked for and retired from the BC Safety Councl, where she made long and lasting frend ships One of her favourte things to do n retrement was to go on monthly outngs with her best frends Shirey, Mary and Ely that may or may not have included the odd casno

Nancy was predeceased by her husband Lawrence and her son Gary

She is lovingly remembered by sons Mark (Kim) and Rick (Denise) and daughters Linda and Mchelle (Dave) and many grandchidren and great grandchildren

We would ike to thank the Delta and Surrey Hospitals along with the Delta Funeral Home for the exceptiona care that our mother received In leu of flowers, pease consder donatng to the Delta Hosptal Foundaton in her memory

As per Nancy’s request there wil be no service

It’s with tender hearts that we share that Heather (Bobbi) Hutchinson passed on October 27th, 2022, at Delta Hospital after a strong fought battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Heather was predeceased by her brother John and youngest son William (BJ). She’s survived by her eldest son Steve; daughter in law Corena; grandchildren James and Kristen; middle son Mike and daughter in law Suzy; and extended family members Perri, husband Stewart, sons Josh, Gareth, and Danny, wife Connie, and son Ryan.

Heather was born and raised in Saskatchewan and graduated from the Regina School of Nursing in 1963. She worked in hospitals in Saskatchewan, Ontario, BC, and Alberta before accepting a position in 1978 at the Delta Hospital in Ladner, BC, where she eventually became Head Nurse She influenced and touched many lives up until she retired in 1997. Not one to sit still for long, she then taught nursing at Vancouver Community College for ten years.

Particularly, after this second retirement, Heather fulfilled her love of travel, centering many of her trips around visits with family, including dear Cousin Barbara in Texas and dozens of close cousins in Saskatchewan. She deeply valued her relationships and connection with others and dedicated much of her time to staying in touch with family, friends and colleagues from her school and nursing days and those close by in her Ladner church community.

Those close to her will cherish many memories of enjoying a home cooked meal followed by some reminiscing.

Heather was a dedicated nurse, a loving mother, and a loyal and true friend. She will be deeply missed by the many friends and family whose lives she touched. While it is hard to say goodbye, we find comfort in her strong but subtle spirituality, knowing that she cherished the life she’d shared with us, the adventures that she’d had, and that she embraced the freedom, peace, and loved ones awaiting her in heaven.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date

KELLY, Joan

25, 1936 November 12, 2022

Our beloved Joan (Hazel Joan Kelly nee Buzza) passed peacefully at the Surrey home of her son Kris following a lengthy and courageous battle with scleroderma, later complicated by dementia. A gifted poet and advocate, Joan’s warmth, compassion and kindness, gentle humour, and twinkling blue eyes touched the lives of her large and loving extended family and many dear friends, including those living with scleroderma in BC.

Treasuring her memory are her sons Kris and Ken Johnson; stepchildren Margaret Lincoln, Pat Doyle, Linda Neilsen, Bill Kelly and their families; the family of grandsons Jordan and Shea DeVries; brother Bob Buzza and the Buzza/Henricks family of cousins, nieces and nephews

After many happy years in Richmond and Ladner, Joan was predeceased by her husband Bill Kelly in 2010, her daughter Kym DeVries, her parents Willis and Hazel and brothers Dick and Jim Buzza.

Joan’s family thanks the Scleroderma Assn of BC for sharing her story and creating a memorial fund in her honour, found at www.sclerodermabc.ca.

Joan’s Celebration of Life will be held on January 8, 2023, from 2 4 pm at the Ladner Community Centre, 4734 51st Street, Ladner, Delta, BC.
