A holiday fixture in Tsawwassen for the last 51 years and a vital fundraiser for the local scouts program has been hit by thieves.
During the overnight hours last Thursday (Dec. 8), the 3rd Boundary Bay Scouts Christmas Tree Lot, located in the South Delta Recreation Centre parking lot, had a dozen trees stolen The estimated retail value is $1,500 and the incident is currently under investigation by Delta Police.
The lot is run by parent volunteers and the scouts themselves When they showed up to open that night they noticed a large portion of the fencing was down and custom price tags were scattered in the parking lot
“We don’t have a giant 10-foot metal fence for security like the professional lots Our success
relies on the kindness of strangers,” explained organizer Natalie Shantz “We set up with parents and youth, rent our own U-Haul, and bring everything back to our storage locker We even drive to collect our own trees It’s a lot of work, but we keep our costs low Really, it’s a fun service project that everyone enjoys
“It’s pretty awful. In the past we ’ ve had three trees at most over the whole season stolen Many years none at all Generally, we assume someone really needed a tree or some bored kids thought they were funny”
Shantz added getting more trees to replace the stolen ones is impossible this close to Christmas
“To secure our trees, we reserve in September. They are fresh cut as we arrive with the truck. With the B C heatwave, flood, and heatwave again, securing an order
is difficult enough,” she said “So many trees are damaged and we only deal with local trees to ensure a quality that lasts the season There would be no way to replace them so we are out of luck We drain all our accounts to pay for the trees and only replenish with sales Even if it was a good tree year we would not have the funding to purchase more. ”
According to Delta Police Acting Insp James Sandberg, CCTV security cameras from the adjacent building are being reviewed to potentially determine suspect(s) identities Shantz added there may be no choice, but for the lot to have its own cameras next year
“We’ve not had to deal with something this before Overall it’s very disappointing. It’s a youth run fundraiser to support our programming and learn life skills Such a sad lesson to learn this year, ” she said.

WesthamIslanddogsurvives brazencoyoteattack
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist com
A 13-year-old English Springer Spaniel has survived a brazen coyote attack just steps from her Westham Island home
It was around 9 p.m. last Monday (Dec 5) when Lacy went outside for her regular evening bathroom break
“I was watching the hockey game and my wife was upstairs and she let our dog out as we always do. (Lacy) was out there for no more than a minute and these two coyotes that were either on the street or in the field across the street from us came out and were on her for no more than two minutes,” said owner Doug Allen. ”I threw on my boots on and went running out there My wife was screaming and they were gone by that time (Lacy) slinked her way into the house and collapsed There was blood everywhere.”
The Allens were fortunate to find the Intercity Animal Emergency Clinic
in Vancouver was open with a surgeon available and raced off to the Southwest Marine Drive location from their Savage Road home They stayed with her at the clinic until 1 a.m. and were thrilled to hear later she had made it through the night She is now back home. Her extensive recovery requires about a half-a-dozen medications
Based on the size of the wounds on Lacy’s back, the vet believed she had been attacked by a wolf The Allens told them they have lived on Westham Island for 16 years and there are no wolves Doug, later was able to confirm it was two coyotes thanks to the tracks they had left behind on their snow covered property
“A friend of mine is a trapper and he said it was a really large male. They usually hunt in packs of two. (Lacy) is 35 pounds and they tried to pack her away but they couldn’t do it Most of my neighbours have smaller dogs that are like seven or
Lacy, a 13-year-old English Springer Spaniel, was rushed to a Vancouver emergency clinic for late night surgery after being attacked by two coyotes last week at her Westham Island home.
eight pounds, so I called them all and told them to keep them inside.”
Allen added the coyotes typically live within the nearby George Reifel Bird Sanctuary and believes the recent cold snap had limited their food options
“About three weeks ago, one walked right by our back door I didn’t
see it, but my neighbour saw it,” said Doug “We’re right on the water and a big male was also seen walking along the dike There’s not too many people out here and everybody kind of knows everybody We have encountered them before, but not to this degree.
“We got lucky, because
the bites didn’t break any bones and didn’t collapse her lung. If that would have happened, she probably wouldn’t have made it She’s had a very good life out here. I’m retired and a hunter and she gets to hunt pheasants It’s been really good and I didn’t want to see her end her life that way ”
Charges laid in forcible confinement incident
Morgan Thompson, has been charged with one count of robbery.
Charges have now been laid against a man and a women in relation to a bizarre case that involved forcible confinement of two women in a U-Haul van last week.
On Dec 8, Delta Police announced that charges were sworn against 38-year-old Dustin Engels who was charged with two counts of forcible confinement, two counts of assault, two counts of use of an imitation firearm, two counts of uttering threats and one count of robbery
A 28-year-old woman,
“The Delta Police want to emphasize that all people involved in this incident are known to each other,” said Acting Insp James Sandberg “This incident was not a random incident and did not place the general public in any harm This incident occurred as a result of conflict between known parties” Both accused appeared in Surrey provncial court this week. An update on their in custody status was not known when the Optimist went to press Wednesday afternoon
DPD say just before noon on
Dec. 7, officers were dispatched to the area of Highway 17 and Ladner Trunk Road for a report of a distraught person
“Upon arrival, officers learned that a 21-year-old woman had been assaulted, robbed of her money, and forcibly confined in a U-Haul van, ” said Sandberg “She had escaped from the vehicle near Highway 17 and Ladner Trunk Road. Officers also learned that another woman was forcibly confined in the van. It was determined early in the investigation that all of the occupants knew each other”
Sandberg said officers took immediate action to locate the other remaining victim who was
in the U-Haul van and allegedly being forcibly confined by a male and female suspect. This included notifying other police agencies in surrounding jurisdictions The investigation resulted in the Langley RCMP locating the van in the Aldergrove area and arresting two occupants The second victim was located unharmed
“The Delta Police Department wishes to thank our partners from the Langley RCMP, the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team, and Air 1, for their assistance in locating the second victim and arresting the suspects in this investigation,” said Sandberg

Former Delta teacher suspended for inappropriate classroom conduct
A former Delta School District elementary teacher has been disciplined by B C’s Commissioner for Teacher Regulation for inappropriate classroom activities and frightening her students
Cindy Chi-Ching Tong admitted that she told her Grade 2 students how when she was a student in elementary school had bullied other students, including making someone eat an orange rind and smearing dog feces on the locker of another. She also said she punched a student in high school and had run
away from home.
She had also shown movies during class and several were rated PG-13 One of the films she played was the R-rated John Carpenter horror movie Halloween
“Some of the students reported feeling frightened after watching this film Tong showed the films to her class at least once a week, sometimes over lunch and sometimes during instructional time. In November 2020, Tong showed her students movies for two days in a row so that she could complete her report cards,” the consent resolution agreement
stated.
Tong, who had also played a virtual game with students called “Mafia” in which players would eliminate people at night, was also found to have not treated students equally in the classroom
Tong had also committed other violations, including not having daily lesson plans.
She was suspended for one day and was to serve the suspension on Dec 7, 2022. She must complete a course on creating a positive learning environment

The hotel will also have an outdoor pool and hot tub, which are still under construction, sundry shop, a grab ‘ n ’
go coffee shop serving Starbucks and easy access to the casino and its associated eateries
“We are very excited to open this new Delta Hotels by Marriott hotel after constructing it over the course of the last 17 months It only stands to reason that the biggest and best hotel in Delta, B C would be a Delta Hotels by Marriott. It truly is one of the most iconic hotel brands in Canada,” said Krivoshen
The hotel will also feature a separate high-end day spa, named Severine Spa and Wellness, which is expected to open in February

“We have been working very hard to get the hotel ready and the team trained, in anticipation of welcoming our first guests into the hotel. They are very eager to start serving travellers coming to the region,” said hotel general manager Sam Yu
Pavel Randhawa, director of sales, said no details have been
overlooked and the fact that it is adjacent to the Cascades Delta casino and conference centre, and their associated restaurants, is icing on the cake.

Joint tenancy to avoid probate fees? Not so fast
Jeffrey Greenfeld, CFP®, EPC, RIS
Investment Advisor, iA Private Wealth Inc
As an elderly adult or couple, have you been advised to add your adult child/children to the title of your primary residence as joint tenants for the purpose of avoiding probate fees? If so, consider these serious consequences before signing off half your home ownership
Property transfer tax
Adding your child to the title means paying property tax at a potentially higher rate than probate fees (2% on any amount between $201K and $2M and 3% on any amount greater than $2M).
Deferred property tax
If you are 55 and older, and have been deferring your property tax, be prepared to pay them back in full before the transfer can be registered.
Existing mortgage on title
If an existing mortgage exists on the property, the lender must agree to the change and may even want to interview your child and review their financial situation If the bank agrees, your child will automatically become equally responsible for this debt which could ultimately affect their credit rating.
Children’s future financial woes
If your child takes financial risks or is currently in financial trouble – take a pass.Your child’s debts can be attached to your property and may include CRA debts, bankruptcy, and future lawsuits
Spousal relationship
Your child’s partner may have their own ideas about joint ownership and may pressure your son or daughter to‘protect their inheritance’. Also, with divorces on the rise, there is a chance that your precious home could end up being considered an asset shared by your child’s ex-spouse Losing control
Ready to sell and downsize?Your new joint owner may have other plans and demand that their portion of the proceeds belongs to them prior to your death.
Capital gains
If the joint property is not your child’s principal residence, a capital gains rate of 50% applies to the equity accumulated during the time they are on title. This is a much higher rate than the 1 4% BC probate fees
Joint tenants with rights of survivorship (JTWROS) vs tenants in common
Ensure you choose the correct version for your intention JTWROS means that 100% of the ownership reverts to the surviving joint tenant upon the death of one owner.Tenants in common means the asset goes to the children of the joint tenant, as might be your natural objective.
These are just some of the reasons you should think twice about putting your child on title.

Heartless thefts
IAN JACQUES
We have a Grinch or Grinches at work here in Delta
As reported by the Optimist earlier this week and on the front page of today’s print edition, last week, the 3rd Boundary Bay Scouts Christmas Tree Lot at the South Delta Rec Centre was hit by thieves The overnight theft saw a dozen trees stolen, valued at an estimated $1,500
This fundraising effort – a holiday fixture in our community for the last 51 years – is a major source of funds for this volunteer-led, youth organization
Volunteer parents and the Scouts themselves work hard and put in a lot of hours leading up to and during December to staff the tree lot I can only imagine the heartbreak, sadness and anger of the parents and youth who showed up the next day following the thefts to see a large portion of fencing torn down, price tags scattered in the parking lot and trees missing.
Stealing from kids at any time of the year is the lowest of low, but at Christmas time, it’s even worse
Those that stole the trees probably don’t care and I suspect that they will now try to sell the stolen trees at some make shift roadside stand to make a few bucks
This incident is just one of several Christmas-related thefts that I know about.
In early November, hundreds of lights and extension cords were stolen from Tsawwassen Springs as they began the set-up for their Festival of Lights.
I have seen posts on local social media pages in South and North Delta about the thefts of Christmas lights and decorations from residential displays A few years ago in fact, my dad’s house in North Delta was hit by thieves who took a number of lighted snow globes and a lighted Big Bird critter
Bah humbug to those responsible. May your stocking on Christmas morning be filled with coal.

Latest snow storm nothing compared to what’s coming next for commuters
There are a few things in life that really scare mesnakes and crocodiles – being two of those things I’m freaked out about how they look and by the possibility of being their breakfast.
Chances are very slim that will be my demise. We live amongst squirrels, raccoons, coyotes and skunks in South Delta A reasonably managed pack of wild animals.
What I am really scared about going into 2023 is the George Massey Tunnel
It all started while watching a World Cup soccer game. It was the boring England versus Senegal game and discussion turned to the recent snow storm
That snowy night my husband was on the road for four hours trying to get home before he aborted his trip and luckily could bunk in with friends in Richmond
A friend in the know said, “A snow storm is the least of our worries, wait until construction begins on the new tunnel.”
I figured that was a refer-
INGRID ABBOTT
ence to the rerouting of traffic during construction.
No it was not I learned that engineering firms have submitted bids to the provincial government to monitor the tunnel during construction.
“Why do they need to do that?” I asked naively.
Turns out the construction of the new tunnel has the potential to disturb the George Massey Tunnel. I had not considered that, and I bet neither have you
It makes sense Drilling and construction will cause movement on the Fraser River floor, resulting in stress to the existing
tunnel, and in the worst case scenario, dangerous to use.
I am reminded of the vibration I feel when a pile driver is in full swing, or an excavator taking down a house Those vibrations are felt far and wide, so imagine that on a bigger scale under water.
Most of us are extremely dependent on the tunnel. My family certainly is, and as I speed through the tube, I hope I won’t be in it when an earthquake hits.
Up until now that’s been the biggest threat to being shut off from the rest of the Lower Mainland Now it seems we have another worry, damage to the existing tunnel while we wait for the new tunnel.
The optimist in me trusts engineers will make sure the tunnel is safe during construction. The cynic in me suspects 2023 will present a whole new set of traffic problems
Snakes and crocs suddenly don’t look so scary

Howisthreepercentamajority?
Editor:
I could only chuckle while reading Doug Reynolds letter regarding Delta council and the redevelopment proposal for the Dunbar Lumber site in the Dec 8 letters section
Reynolds suggested that he had checked with the Delta City Clerk regarding feedback from residents and that “the exact numbers were: 684 in opposition and ONLY
[emphasis added] 80 in favour.” He later writes that he hoped that our new council would “listen to the overwhelming majority of Ladner residents who spoke and wrote against” the proposal
According to information found on Wikipedia purportedly sourced from Stats Canada, the 2016 census showed Ladner having a population of 22,193 Since
when does approximately three represent a majority let alone one of overwhelming fashion?
As I think most are aware, feedback on any proposal in South Delta tends to be overrepresented by detractors and naysayers If we truly wanted to see levels of support or opposition, a broader, random sampling of residents would be warranted.

In support of six storeys
Editor:
I am one of the seemingly few people who thinks that a six-storey mixed-use development to replace the unsightly lumber yard at the centre of the village is a positive direction for that space. There is no reason that this cannot be developed just as tastefully as a fourstorey building.
I just finished reading a letter to the editor posted
to the Optimist website encouraging our community to give more support to our local stores in order to prevent the village from becoming a ghost town of empty store fronts. One good way to increase traffic to our shops would be to increase the number of people living in the heart of the village, which this development would accomplish There is a difference
between celebrating Ladner’s heritage and rigidly clinging to the past Throughout its history, blindly rejecting progress has never been a part of Ladner’s heritage until very recently We should stop trying to have our cake and eat it, too If we want a vibrant village, we need the population to support business development

Lifesaving care was put at risk
Editor:
I read with sympathy Optimist reporter Sandor Gyarmati’s online article describing the commuter gridlock created by the recent snow storm on Nov 29
Of greatest concern to me was the fact that for many hours all vehicular crossings across the Fraser River were impassable leaving almost one million people without access to life saving care.
Despite a population of approximately one million, no hospitals south of the Fraser are funded to treat the three leading causes of sudden death: heart attack, stroke or major trauma
These lifesaving services are only available north of the river in Vancouver and New Westminster.
Mortality and morbidity does depend upon rapid medical response to these conditions.
Worsening weather and environmental crises reinforce the need to revisit the distribution of life saving services in the Lower Mainland and to develop an effective medical transport plan that can be implemented when bridges and tunnels are gridlocked if one million Lower Mainland residents, living south of the Fraser are to receive equitable access to life saving care

Now is the time of year that we recognize that the sidewalks are constructed for automobiles
The sloping contours are dangerous to walkers, strollers, wheel chairs and walkers in general.
My opinion is that
there exists a municipal engineer that can design a standard that does not consider the car first and pedestrians more.

Snow,wind,andthenever endingbridgeortunneldebate
Editor:
It never ceases to amaze me the rhetoric over the never ending bridge or tunnel debate, with the recent snowagedon highways fiasco
The causes for this fiasco can be traced to drivers without snow tires, drivers with no clue how to drive in snow, transit vehicles with summer tires, commercial drivers who were not prepared for the event and the almost total absence of the highways department and highways contractors
The steep approach
grades for the major bridges are an ongoing problem in winter and with all bridges and hills closed due to accidents, the highways became parking lots, with gridlock reaching back through the tunnel
One recent letter in the Optimist naively claimed that a 10-lane bridge would have solved the problem
A quote from the Minister of Transportation: “It was high winds and blowing snow that subsequently forced the bridge’s closure beyond the acci-
dents ”
I have never heard of high winds and blowing snow closing a tunnel! Please enough of this debate.
Please remember, that Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar Sikh temple, in Richmond, adjacent to the Queensborough Bridge, quickly organized in providing hot drinks and food to drivers stuck on the bridge and approaches
They were able to do what the highways people could not, deal with an emergency situation!

Support our Ladner Village shops
Editor:
Are you aware that our local shops are suffering and in fact over the next year, three shops are planning to close or sell with one being South Coast Casuals (due to the retirement of the owners)?
What a shame if more shops and businesses close We will end up
with a village of vacant store fronts We need to support our local businesses more if we want to keep them and entice other shops, restaurants to open.
Since the COVID pandemic, people have been ordering more and more online and buying from big box stores This in time will kill the small
family run businesses and turn Ladner Village into a ghost town of fast food restaurants and dollar stores.
There is a need for those types of businesses as well, but hopefully it won’t make up the whole town Please Support our local shops and keep this charming village alive!

Switch back to growing produce?
Editor:
I was amused by a recent online article on the Optimist website; “Delta cannabis grower hoping government makes changes”
The greenhouse in
question on 64th Street was originally approved as an operation growing tomatoes and other edible produce If they cannot operate a viable cannabis operation with the current
regulations then perhaps they should switch back to what they used to grow originally, providing produce to grocery stores.

To all the kind folks who slowed down on Westminster Avenue in Ladner, Saturday Dec 3 around 3 p.m.
Our young dog got loose and was running down the avenue
After a few blocks, many neighbours stepped up and helped us retrieve our dog by stopping their cars, putting their hazards on to slow down other traffic and coming out of their homes to help us catch
him
To our dog all of this was a game, but it could have ended quite differently
Our appreciation to all that assisted us

LettersAnimportantmilestone forcancercommunity
Editor:
As of Dec. 18, people with a disease like cancer will have greater peace of mind knowing they will receive more financial assistance to take the necessary time off work needed to get better.
That’s because, on that day, Canadians with a serious illness, injury or disease like cancer who need time off work will receive 26 weeks of financial assistance through the EI
sickness benefit That’s three months more than the benefit previously covered, and is the first time it’s been increased since the 1970s Having six months of financial assistance means more time to focus on getting well, and less time spent worrying about financial hardships
With two in five Canadians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and more than 1 5 million living
with or beyond cancer, this additional support is so vital
Congratulations to Delta MP Carla Qualtrough for championing this important change Because of it, Canadians will face less financial pressure to work throughout their cancer treatment and recovery.

Very impressed with McKee Christmas Craft Fair
Editor:
I’m writing to express my pleasure in attending the craft fair! They accepted donations to the South Delta Food Bank and also had a few raffle prizes for the South Delta Food Bank that you purchased tickets for
At the craft fair inside, there was a wide variety of delightful locallymade crafts
I specifically went to buy a bunch of Christmas cards, as I vehemently support local small businesses. I purchased a bunch, but I also found a few
suitable gifts for my boyfriend I will definitely be attending next year to purchase more Christmas cards and see what else local citizens create!
Kudos, once again, to a well-run and delightful Christmas Craft Fair

Thanks to the generosity of six South Delta restaurants, nearly $20,000 has been raised for the B C Cancer Foundation.
With November being
Pancreatic Cancer month, the Ladner and Tsawwassen McDonalds and Chopped Leaf locations, along with Ladner Dairy Queen and Tsawwassen White Spot each donated 10 percent of proceeds on their designated days,
ranging from Nov. 17-20. The cumulative total was $19,411 that will be given to the B C Cancer Foundation, specifically for pancreatic cancer research and care.
The initiative was launched in 2019 in honour of Ladner
resident and Delta firefighter Thomas Haydon who lost his battle to Pancreatic Neuroendocrine cancer in 2018 at the age of 36 Earlier this year, the City of Delta unveiled a tribute to Haydon inside the Ladner Leisure
Centre where he spent much of his life playing and coaching lacrosse, including being the first-ever captain of the Delta Junior “A” Islanders.
To honour Haydon, Ladner Dairy Queen also sold a special edi-
tion fireman ice cream cake that saw 50 percent of each sale donated to the foundation Each of the locations also sold $5 purple ribbons
This year ’ s record total means over $55,000 has been raised over the last four years

An opportunity to begin the new year with a chilly dip into Boundary Bay returns for the first time in three years
The City of Delta’s Polar Bear Swim is back at Boundary Bay Regional Park on Jan. 1.
This immensely popular free event ran for 40 consecutive years until being disrupted by the pandemic Now it returns in what should be a
fun afternoon for all ages
Residents young and old – many dressed in colourful costumes – will kick off 2023 with a dip in the icy waters at Centennial Beach While not everyone is brave enough to take the plunge, the shores and beach area are always packed with onlookers taking in the spectacle.
Once again, the first three swimmers to ring the bell will be awarded trophies and prizes
There will also be prizes for the oldest swimmer as well as the swim-
mer who has travelled from farthest away.
The pre-swim activities will start at 11:45 a.m. and will include face painting, children activities and a drum circle The Boundary Bay Lions’ Street Kitchen will also be on site serving hot chocolate
Registration to participate in the plunge starts at noon and everyone is required to sign a waiver. There will also be draw prizes for children 18 and under.
The swim begins at 1 p m

I just got home from our staff Christmas dinner, and as I write this article, I am filled with gratitude for the fact that I get to work with some amazing people
Appreciate your team Minister’s Minute
Our team has gone through so many things together over the years and we have become a real family We’re not perfect, but I tell everyone that I’m a part of the best team in the world. I can trust them and count on them. I am blessed.
In the Christmas account, we learn that Mary had a team that she could count on. Her husband, Joseph, was a part of this team, but she also had her relative Elizabeth
When Mary heard from an angel that she would give birth to the Son of God, she “ arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah
PAUL PARK
SOUTH DELTA BAPTIST CHURCH
and greeted Elizabeth” (Lk. 1:39-40).
Mary had just received the most astonishing news, and then she sought to go visit Elizbeth with haste Mary must have trusted Elizabeth, and they must have had a special friendship; so much so that Mary ends up staying with her for about three months (Lk. 1:56).
The bible doesn’t record all of their interactions, but one could eas-
ily guess that they would have processed the meaning of the angel’s visits together. We know from Luke’s account that they encouraged each other and praised God together Christmas time gives us opportunities to reflect on our relationships
Having a team that you can trust whether it’s at work, home, or in your social life is a blessing
Having a team that loves you no matter what, gives you confidence to move forward in life without being paralyzed by insecurities
We shouldn’t take our team for granted During this Christmas season, express your gratitude to your team and find ways to show them how much you love them Moreover, remember those that feel lonely during this time, and reach out to them to let them know that you’d be happy to be a part of their team

Madelaine Burnett doesn’t want to cross border as she waits for visa
PHIL MELYCHUK Optimist Contributor
At Christmastime this year, Madelaine Burnett will be so near, yet so far
The ballet and modern dancer from Tsawwassen, who trained at Deas Island Dance, then made it in New York, can’t come home for the holidays because leaving the U.S., could complicate her attempts to get an artist’s visa
So instead, she’ll fly from New York to Seattle and catch a small plane to Point Roberts where her family will gather during the holidays
“It’s kind of a crazy travel arrangement,” she said Burnett first went to New York in 2015 after landing a scholarship spot with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre where she studied for three years She then studied the teaching of dance for two years, while also performing as a soloist for Graham 2 dance company, all under a student visa
Most recently, until August, she was on a oneyear work visa during which she performed as a soloist with Alison Cook Beatty Dance in New York
That visa expired and
she hasn’t worked since, as she awaits word on her application for a threeyear artist’s visa
“I have so many things going for me and I was kind of feeling at the top of the world with all these incredible opportunities, solo performances abroad even, and yet we ’ re at a standstill now, waiting,” she said
But for Burnett, she cannot not dance, so she’s still taking classes and rehearsing on her own
“I continue dancing, (unpaid) because I need to for my own enjoyment and mental health and everything,” she said “It’s very fulfilling for me as an artist.”
Her current group, Alison Cook Beatty Dance, visits small communities with outreach performances that are aimed at topical issues. The group ’ s next performance is about suicide awareness.
Last summer, she had the solo performance in the troupe’s Echoes of War, a tribute to Ukraine.
The group ’ s work is all dedicated to life events.
“I love dancing, but I want to be able to do good for the world at the same time as do what I love for myself,” she said
Genesis Theatre’s 2023 line-up includes The High Bar Gang and Brent Butt
both shows and make for great Christmas gifts.
The bluegrass super group The High Bar Gang performs on Feb. 4 while Canadian comedy legend Brent Butt performs on March 3.
Tickets are now on sale for
The repertoire of Juno Awardnominated The High Bar Gang stays firmly rooted in the golden age of bluegrass music. The band features previous headliners at Genesis Theatre, Barney Bentall and Shari Ulrich, along
with other fine musicians
Butt, one of Canada’s funniest and most recognizable comedians, has performed at the world’s most prestigious comedy festivals, toured internationally, and created and starred in the wellknown TV sitcom, Corner Gas.
The goal of Genesis Theatre,
which is operated by Delta School District, is to inspire the community with accessible experiences that celebrate imagination, diversity, and connection.

Yes, the numerous inquiries to your credit bureau report can affect your credit score. This can happen when someone is car, credit card or mortgage shopping as each credit request/enquiry to a lender will create a new enquiry to your credit. When several enquiries are made the credit score can drop. One of the advantages of using a mortgage broker is that we obtain a single credit report. This report can be sent to numerous lenders with little to no impact on your credit score. ADVICE FROM THE professionals Dr. Raj Dhiman 604-946-9588 Technology plays a big role in our lives today and is changing at a rapid rate. People come to the dentist dreading experiences that have happened to them in the past. Just coming in for a routine hygiene visit can cause a lot of anxiety for a person. We at Riverside Dental try to do our best at making your experience at our office the most comfortable as possible. X-rays that were a pain to have done are now all digital. This allows the sensor to be very small and comfortable for our clients. With the help of our digital scanner, impressions no longer involve any material in the mouth and down the throat. We simply just scan everything that needs any lab work. With this technology crowns can even be completed in one appointment as well. Our Primescan allows us at Riverside Dental to even be able to design future crowns and veneers to the shape and size you’ve always wanted without even touching the teeth. Mock-ups can then be digitally fabricated and placed in your mouth to allow you to see and feel how things can potentially look. Dental freezing anesthetic can be administered digitally and pain free, without the need of a traditional syringe! Technology Is making a big difference and we take pride in making your experience as pleasant as possible. 130 – 4977 Trenant Street, Delta smile@ladnerdentist com 604-946-9588 How can technology make my life easier at the dentist?
During the season of giving, donating to your local hospital is a wonderful way to give back to your community By making a charitable gift to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation, you are supporting the health and well being of the Delta community including your family, friends and neighbours. As the year comes to a close, a charitable donation will also help you to maximize your year-end tax credit. There are many ways to donate including making a one-time donation, becoming a monthly donor or making a tribute gift in memory or in honour of a loved one. Gifts received before December 31st, 2022 will ensure a 2022 charitable tax receipt. With help from donor dollars, the Foundation can continue to fund and promote outstanding healthcare at the Delta Hospital Campus of Care including Irene Thomas Hospice and Mountain View Manor For more information on how you can donate, please contact Shari Barr at 604.940.9695 or shari.barr@dhchfoundation.ca, or visit our website: www.dhchfoundation.ca shari.barr@dhchfoundation.ca dhchfoundation ca 604-940-9695 How can I give back to the Delta Hospital Campus of Care this holiday season and maximize my 2022 tax credit?

Yes, many do! While some very basic models are simply hearing amplfiers that will make everything louder (including all the ambient noises around you), many of the more sophisticated hearing aids available today are designed to address background noise.

Registered Denturist Esthetics Denture Studio #240 - 3671 Westminster Hwy at Terra Nova Shoppng Centre 604-279-9151 RAJBEER (MONA) KAUR, RD How long should full plate dentures last? This is a multifactorial answer Foremost it depends on how well you take care of them. Subsequently diet; the types of foods you eat significantly impact on the wear of your teeth. Course foods tend to wear out the chewing surfaces at a much quicker rate. White mint candies that have a sandy feeling coating are highly abrasive and destructive to artificial teeth. Your particular physiology can affect your fitting surfaces. For example, osteoporosis can affect the fitting surfaces by creating a faster rate of change to your underlying bone structures. Numerous other factors may also play into these scenarios. I create dentures to last at least seven to ten years using high quality products; dependent on the above conditions. Basketballrivalry heatsupthisseason
Sun Devils & Pacers now play in same league
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist com
It’s taken two less students to change the boys basketball landscape for the South Delta Sun Devils, yet nothing is different when it comes to the overall picture
For the very first time since B.C. Boys Basketball added an additional tier a decade ago, the Sun Devils have dropped down to the “AAA” level after enrollment of Grade 11 and 12 boys at South Delta Secondary dipped below the minimum requirement to stay at “AAAA” for the province’s largest schools
The development comes after a very competitive 2021-22 campaign and coaches Bryan Lopez and Carol Lingham having already put together a challenging schedule that includes a steady diet of “AAAA” teams, including high-profile tournament stops at Burnaby South and Vancouver College over the next month
The Sun Devils flirted with their firstever provincial tournament berth a year ago, coming within a couple of wins of advancing to the Langley Events Centre The plan is to continue to build on that momentum
“It’s difficult to make the provincials
regardless of what tier you are playing at It’s more looking at the bigger picture and that’s continuing to build the basketball culture at the school,” said Lopez. “In our eyes, we saw success last season in terms of senior boys basketball making that leap forward
“We’re younger, but we have a decent amount of players and it’s really spread out this year. It’s not really a re-building year, but more like they’re gonna have their experiences, they’re going to get a lot of playing time and they’re just going to keep getting stronger.”
The Sun Devils are making sure they get a good idea what they will be up against at the “AAA” level where their attention turns from mostly Surrey schools to Richmond
The honorable mention MacNeill Ravens have been among the top programs across the Fraser River for about a decade and came into Tsawwassen last Thursday to defeat South Delta 92-78.
There is also quality opponents closer to home, including the top 10 ranked North Delta Huskies, while nearby rival Delta Pacers are off to a promising start, winning a tournament at Langley Secondary last week
The Pacers should only get better as the season unfolds with head coach
A twist to the Sur-Del League this season will see each of the teams play each

other just once compared to the previous home-and-home format
The Sun Devils and Pacers are slated to meet Feb. 15 in Ladner with the league playoffs starting the following week.
Ice Hawks hit the road Saturday for first time in 24 days
MARK BOOTH mbooth@delta-optimist com
It’s a rare road game on Saturday night for the top ranked junior “B” hockey team in the province
The Delta Ice Hawks (21-4-0-0) will visit the Port Moody Panthers, ending a stretch of 24 days since the last time they played out-of-town It’s a quirk in their Pacific Junior Hockey League schedule that has them playing just a handful of games since midNovember It’s resulted in the Richmond Sockeyes taking over top spot in the PJHL’s Tom Shaw Conference with a 22-5-1-2 record Delta does enjoy-
ing a whopping five games in hand
Things will change dramatically for the Ice Hawks in January with 11 games over the 31 days
The lull in their schedule came amid the Dec. 1 roster deadline that included trades for blueliner Calean Mander and forward Luke Mongrain from Ridge Meadows and Aldergrove respectively
“We will have had six practices before we have our next game, so we have a chance to work on some things, kind of get these guys acclimated, figure out what our combos and chemistry changes are and work through it,” said Ice Hawks GM and head coach Steve Robinson “If you’d asked me if I would prefer
this or a regular schedule, I would definitely prefer a regular schedule, but once I see it I just try to digest how to do it best (not question) why it’s like that
“It’s a little annoying when I look at the loading of a back end (of our schedule), but like I told the guys, it’s going to be a bit of a mental hurdle that they just have to deal with”
The Ice Hawks host Ridge Meadows on Tuesday (7:35 p m ) in Ladner and also welcome Mission City on Dec 27 It’s then off to Richmond’s Minoru Arenas for the annual PJHL Winter Classic with games against Surrey (Dec 29) and the host Sockeyes (Jan 1)
