The constantly climbing costs of food is hurting those whose incomes are stuck and the pressure on prices is being noticed in Delta by those who help the hungry.

At Deltassist, demand for the food that the Emergency Food Cupboard gives out has almost doubled, said Lisa Pitman, manager of community and senior services

Grocery bags containing macaroni, canned fruit, meats and pasta, cereal, juice and peanut butter are given out on an emergency basis –both to those who have places to live and the homeless.

“It’s been pretty crazy. Not fun,” she said recently, saying she’s seeing more homeless and seniors Now each week, the Emergency Food Cupboard gives out about 80 of those bags.

In 2020 fiscal year, the program gave out a total of 435 grocery bags.

In 2021, that more

than doubled to 945. Numbers for 2022 were not available yet

And usually when demand increases, the emergency food program puts out a notice on social media to ask for donations, which then come flooding in, but that’s no longer the case as donations are slowing as well

The cash and price crunch also is visible via the Shop and Drop Program, which Deltassist took over in 2020.

That program was designed to provide groceries to seniors who were isolated because of COVID-19, but the program has continued because of the need in the community.

Shop and Drop helps seniors who may have trouble getting out and about. Volunteers call seniors every second week, give them their grocery list, volunteers do the shopping and deliver the food, then get paid at the door step

“We have noticed that their grocery shops are

getting smaller, so we ’ ve observed that and we ’ re thinking that has to do with the rising costs of things,” added Colleen Danes, senior services coordinator at Deltassist “Each week, it’s kind

of like, oh, they’re not ordering as much as they used to, so my volunteers are really thinking it has to do with the cost of everything because it’s not affordable anymore ”

Currently, 13 seniors

in Ladner are using the service, down from about 30 during the pandemic.

A similar service is available in Tsawwassen where 26 seniors are using the Save-On Foods shop program Five

volunteers call seniors weekly and take their orders. Volunteers do the shop and Save-On Foods pays for the delivery service.

People are confused and understandably upset about now having to pay a fee for fast food paper bags, Delta council agreed during its discussion on the city’s plastic bags and single-use items bylaw this week

At its meeting on Monday, council voted in favour of a staff recommendation to begin enforcement of the bylaw with education continuing to be the primary approach when it comes to gaining business compliance

Staff noted only “ a very small minority” of businesses have not been complying with the bylaw, which was passed in December 2021 and bans single-use plastic bags, with a few exceptions

Polystyrene for prepared food, such as foam plates, clamshell containers, bowls and cups, are also banned.

The bylaw also mandates a minimum 25 cent charge for paper shopping bags and $2 fee for reusable bags

After a provincially-mandated six-month transition period, the bylaw came into effect on June 6, 2022. Businesses were provided with an additional six months to transition prior to enforcement

Various B C municipalities have also implemented their own bylaws, while a federal government ban on the manufacture and import for sale of single-use plastics took effect in late 2022.

Meanwhile, Metro Vancouver, which does not have the authority to regulate the sale or distribution of single-use items, has already requested the provincial government come up with a single-use strategy and a harmonized approach for cities

Coun Alicia Guichon said she’s heard plenty of push back from people angry about being charged for food take-out paper bags, since they never paid for them before and, while not ideal, are considered an alternative to plastic bags

“Now that people are being charged for that paper bag out the window, it’s one of

those things that, when you ’ re in-person in the grocery store you could have that conversation and use a reusable bag to bag your own groceries. It’s a little bit different with a fast food drive-thru and I know people are having a bit of confusion and wonder if they can ask not to have a bag,” she said

Guichon added while the bylaw states businesses charge for paper bags, there is confusion that it is a tax by the city In fact, the business keeps that revenue.

Mel Cheesman, director of corporate services, explained those fees come directly from a provincial ministerial order under the Community Charter, which governs the implementation of local single-use bylaws

It could be that provincial legislation is still to come and there could be amendments when it comes to businesses that have always given out paper bags, noted Cheesman, adding Delta staff are working with the regional district on the matter.

Saying the city has had to follow the ministe-

rial order to have a bylaw, Coun. Dylan Kruger agreed that there is room for change, since retailers that had previously handed out plastic bags had a cost to make the switch to paper

“I’ve seen some similar discussion and I think it is very different in the fast food context. The way it was explained to me, other businesses, retail clothing stores for example switching to paper bags, there is a cost to that, there is a real material cost That 25 cents helps subsidize the business to make that transition. It is very different for a fast food restaurant that has always operated that way, ” he said. “We are following the provincial requirement, but is there room for discussion in the future about different standards when it comes to fast food or the more retail shopping component?”

Coun Daniel Boisvert said people are not happy about the charge at eateries, fees that go right back to boost a restaurant’s bottom line, and agreed there is room for improvement.

Delta council had a robust discussion on Monday night regarding fees for fast food paper bags as part of an overall discussion on the city’s single-use items bylaw.

A bomb hoax forced evacuation of the GCT Deltaport container terminal last Thursday (Jan 5)

Marko Dekovic, the vice-president of public affairs for GCT Global Container Terminals, said the security incident around 2 p m required evacuation and notification of authorities, including the Delta Police Department

Transport Canada said that it closely monitored the situation for the duration of the event.

“Out of an abundance of caution, a full terminal evacuation was ordered by [GCT],” said spokesperson San Sau Liu “After the evacuation, the threat was deemed to be non-credible by the Delta Police Department.”

Dekovic said after the all-clear was given, oper-

Trucks stopped Thursday afternoon (Jan. 5) outside GCT Deltaport after a bomb threat was made to the container terminal.

ations resumed for the 1 a.m. shift.

“Making a bomb threat is a criminal offence and Transport Canada takes every threat seriously,” Liu said “Any actual, attempted, threatened or suspected unlawful act, which would cause an interference, breach or malfunction of the maritime transportation system is immediately investigated further.”

A contractor on-site at the time noticed traffic backed up quickly, but sympathized with the facility’s staff

“The sense of urgency was palpable, they were getting everybody out of there as fast as they could,” said Dave Pasin

“I was quite impressed with the way they did it It was clear the welfare of their employees was paramount.

It’s all about possibilities, building a bridge between the traditional aviation industry and a future with exciting innovation and sustainable, cleaner technology

That’s how Teara Fraser described her newest venture she founded, elibird aero, at a celebration launch at the company ’ s new facility at Boundary Bay Airport on Tuesday.

Having received their flight training certification by Transport Canada, the aero tech company has completed purchase deposits for two all-electric eFlyer 2 airplanes

The goal will be to provide flight training for the advanced aircraft, but the company has other ambitions ranging from, among other things, robotics and digital transformation, as well as creating battery charging infrastructure.

“This ecosystem of limitless innovation, that’s what we ’ re interested in We’re interested in everything in our industry how we can innovate, how we can be creative and use technologies and how we can move toward sustainable zero emissions. That’s why we call this an aero tech company, it’s really about innovation,” Fraser told the Optimist.

Fraser, who is of Metis heritage, is also the founder of Iskwew Air. She is

the first Indigenous woman in Canada to launch an airline

Iskwew Air is described as a bridge between traditional air service and the sustainable technology of the future and elibird aero is aimed at bringing the goal of zero emission aviation to that next step

“It’s really building on the work that Iskwew Air has already been doing. We’ve been looking at how do we

decarbonize. For me, I’ve been in this industry for two decades, so how am I doing my part for what I say is walking softly on Mother Earth It started with Iskwew looking at the future of air with electric and other emergent technologies and this is really building on that scape of innovation,” added Fraser

In a news release, Lynette DuJohn, Vice-President, Innovation and Chief Information Officer at Vancouver

Airport Authority, said YVR has a long history of innovation and sustainability and proudly supports the launch of elibird aero as the company charts a new path for clean tech and aviation.

“elibird aero is an exciting addition to our province’s thriving tech ecosystem, and through the Innovation Hub @YVR, we look forward to working alongside the team to create a greener and more resilient future as we advance our shared sustainability goals,” said DuJohn

Fraser serves as a BC Executive Committee member of CAAM, the Canadian Advanced Air Mobility consortium, where Iskwew Air is a founding member She also established the Aviation Leadership Foundation in 2008, while she also servs as a board director for the British Columbia Aviation Council

“CAAM is thrilled to support the launch of elibird aero who is growing the Advanced Air Mobility ecosystem, aiming to bring the first all zero-emission flight training unit in Canada, and leading the way in Canada’s transition toward zero-emission aviation operations,” said JR Hammond, CAAM Executive

Fraser also founded the not-for-profit Indigenous LIFT Collective where she launched Give them Wings (Indigenous Youth Taking Flight). The elibird aero facility is its new home

Federal boundary changes report to be submitted in February

Delta residents will have to wait a while longer to see if the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission will suggest further changes or scrap a proposal which would see the Delta riding carved up

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for British Columbia last year put forward a proposed new electoral map for consideration They were discussed at public hearings in Delta and throughout the province

The map introduces changes to federal electoral district boundaries and has been developed through an independent and non-partisan process.

More than 100 residents attended a public hearing at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn in June and those who signed up to speak reiterated con-

cerns about Delta losing effective representation in Parliament

The commission was to have a final report prepared, which could suggest changes, but the commission decided to request a two-month extension to the Chief Electoral Officer, pursuant to the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act

A spokesperson with the commission told the Optimist the new deadline for the commission to submit its report to the House of Commons is Feb 9

The commission will post on social media and issue a news release when it is tabled, while the report will also be on the commission’s website: https://redecoupage-redistribution-2022. ca/com/bc/index e aspx

The City of Delta had previously been divided with South Delta being part of the Delta-

Richmond East riding, while North Delta was attached to Surrey as part of the Newton-North Delta riding

By the 2015 election, the boundaries were reconfigured to combine both North Delta and South Delta into one Delta riding.

However, Delta could once again be divided as a new riding called Delta would see Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta below 72 Avenue join part of Surrey, extending all the way to King George Highway.

Another part of North Delta would be lumped into Surrey as part of a Surrey riding, while another area of North Delta and the River House area of Ladner would join a newly reconfigured Richmond East.

It’s part of many changes being proposed in response to the significant, but uneven growth in B C’s population

The growth in population in the province, including communities east of Delta, prompted a proposed revision that could result in new-look federal electoral boundaries.

Danes said food security and housing are the two most important issues for seniors

“I’m very passionate at making sure that we keep these programs going and that nobody goes without getting groceries,” Danes said

At KinVillage, CEO Dan Levitt said everyone struggles with inflation, but seniors are affected in a greater way.

“If you ’ re on a fixed income when costs go up you have to make tough decisions,” he said “People can only downgrade their food so much, so that at one point there isn’t a cheaper option That’s a significant issue”

Ladner resident Loretta Schellert, 81, doesn’t like the constantly increasing food bills.

She estimates her grocery bill has jumped by 75 per cent in the last year, to $500 a month

“Right now, I don’t feel there’s a lot to worry about I sure don’t like seeing the food go up and up and up in price”

However, she has a lifelong habit of living frugally and managing money properly.

“I’ve always managed my money and done a budget. I can afford it, but I can say I don’t like it,” she added

She cared for her disabled husband for 32 years and now still manages in her three-bedroom house in Ladner where she still does all the housekeeping although she pays for a gardener

Once a month, Delassist takes her

shopping so she can stock up on supplies that she’s put on a grocery list on her computer

She only orders in food if her kids and grandchildren come to visit

She checks the grocery flyers every week

Sharon Davis, administrator at the South Delta Food Bank, said the cost of food has risen “drastically” Every week, the food bank has to buy fresh food such as produce, meat and dairy products.

“The biggest jump we ’ ve been seeing is in dairy, milk and eggs, she said.

The food bank has about 100 clients, up from during the middle of the pandemic when there were about 60

Despite the cost crunch, the food bank is still stuffing the bags with the same amount of nutritious food The ingredients and amount in the weekly food hampers haven’t changed

“They’re still given the same amount,” said Davis “We don’t cut back on what we give to the clients that come in.”

Increasing costs of ingredients also have led Meals on Wheels to raise their prices last year from $7 50 to $8 a meal

“We’re trying not to raise our costs for seniors but our costs have gone up again with COVID,” said Linda Eastdown, meals and driver coordinator.

She said the cost for a six-week supply of ingredients from which to prepare meals has jumped in the past year from about $1,200 to $1,800. There’s also a $16 gas surcharge for the wholesaler to deliver the food

9-1-1isfor emergency callsonly

Editor’sNote

IAN JACQUES

It’s alarming that in this day and age, we are still having a conversation about when is the right time to dial 9-1-1

Last week, E-Comm, which handles 99 per cent of the 9-1-1 call volume for the province at its two emergency communications centres, issued its annual top 10 list of calls that do not belong on 9-1-1

The top 10 nuisance calls for 2022 included:

1) The nozzle wasn’t working at the gas station

2) They had a flat tire

3) People were playing basketball on a public court at night

4) Someone wasn’t picking up after their dog

5) Someone was using their garbage bin

6) Complaining about children drawing with chalk at a playground

7) Their phone was stuck in a bench

8) Looking for an update on a nation-wide telco outage

9) Someone called 9-1-1 because they had a broken window wiper

10) Someone cut in line at a car wash

Now some of these calls will probably elicit a bit of a chuckle, but this is no laughing matter for the folks over at E-Comm

E-Comm answered a total of 2,109,440 calls in 2022, marking the busiest year in their history.

Call takers have to treat every call as an emergency, so when these insignificant nuisance calls come in, that means time away for an actual emergency call That could mean a life or death situation is delayed for a call taker to take the call meaning lifesaving first responders cannot get to that person in time

Our medical and emergency systems are overtaxed as it is, so to see that people thought that dialing 9-1-1 for these “ so called” emergencies is more than a little concerning It is potentially putting someone ’ s life at risk

These calls are preventable. 9-1-1 is for emergencies only

So the next time you get a flat tire, call a tow truck - don’t dial 9-1-1

Meet the centenarian who lives amongst us

He prefers to be called the old geezer from across the street I like to call him a shining example of how to live a meaningful life at the ripe old age of 100

He’s my neighbour and his name is Steve Gatensbury He will turn 100 on Saturday He’s delaying a celebration until the weathers warmer, maybe in June, because there’s no rush when you ’ re 100

Steve and his wife moved to Beach Grove in 1983 from Burnaby after they saw an ad in the Vancouver Sun for beach front property. It turned out there was a house too, so they bought it.

Steve’s Father emigrated from England to California in 1888, and headed north to the Klondike for the gold rush He landed in Coquitlam where Steve and his sister where raised. His father worked in the lumber business, so it was only natural that at the age of 16, Steve would follow

He owned a successful millwork business where he

bought leftover wood from local saw mills and repurposed the wood for exterior trims then exported it to the U S That passion for wood is evident in his beautiful home, which is lined with stained cedar and has been renovated to suit his needs as he ages Steve spent three and a half years in the navy during The Second World War He’s quick to admit he didn’t see much action except as crew on an escort ship In the mid-Atlantic they were torpedoed by the Germans Eleven crew members died, but the ship was rescued and Steve survived the

war unscathed.

Once he retired in 1989 he began writing and has selfpublished 36 books, ranging from historical to poetry. His three children, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, are also a great source of joy

Delta has one of the highest senior populations in the province at 20.5 per cent and growing That’s led the city to develop an age friendly action plan

Not everyone is as lucky as Steve to stay in their own home, but that’s the hope, that our seniors can remain independent and thrive.

Steve’s advice for healthy ageing is to find a hobby you like and practice it, and most importantly stay humble and laugh Simple advice from someone who always has a warm smile and a story to share

Re: West River Road public parking

Thank-you for restoring in October the public parking on sections of the road along the west foot of River Road

Many hikers along with children in strollers and elders with canes and tourists from afar come

to enjoy the unique views of Canoe Pass, Deltaport and the Salish Sea.

Recently “ no parking” signs have sprouted all along that shoulder and bylaw enforcement is active

The newish parking lot upstream of the best views has three problems. It is too far from the desired viewpoints Secondly, people must walk partway on the nar-

row road. Furthermore, the lot is too small to accommodate the need even now

Public money has financed the road, dike and improved shoulders for historic parking

Please restore parking for us locals and improve access to our park In addition, the south area of 72nd St needs attention too.

Restore previous ‘no parking’ hours

The following letter was sent to Delta Mayor and Council and copied to Delta Optimist

The purpose of writing this letter to you is to bring to your attention the parking changes that have occurred at the west end of Ladner Trunk and access to Brunswick Point dike.

During peak COVID time this area became very congested as it was one of the few outdoor venues that the public could access. This was frustrating to the farmers with regards to safely maneuvering their equipment around the vehicles illegally parked as well as with the regular users who found they could not access the area

During the last 18 months there has been several attempts with signage to regulate the parking in the area.

With COVID restrictions easing and subsequently being lifted, the parking issue has improved greatly With the completion as to what many believed to be an overflow parking area, all the signage has now been changed to no parking, forcing people to use the new parking area and accessing the main dike by having to walk a good km on the road to gain access to the dike The reaction to this this was caused and leveraged by using peak COVID examples not reflecting the current

times.

This decision will have a negative effect on many people that use the dike, however, it will directly impact parents, caregivers of handicapped individuals and the public with mobility issues Their direct access has been removed and hence the enjoyment of being able to appreciate and take in the beauty this area offers

This decision may also impact our reputation and local business that see gains by the tourism this area brings

It would be appreciated if the previous signage for no parking between 10 p m and 6 a m would be reinstated.

Disheartened by this parking situation

Editor:

I am very disheartened to learn that the parking at the end of River Road that I have used for the last 30-plus years is being disallowed

The new parking lot is too far away from the birding area for a senior like myself with bad knees. By the time I get to where I used to be able to park I will have to turn around

I know during COVID restrictions the parking

became unbelievably overcrowded as people from all over the Lower Mainland descended on Brunswick Point, however, recently things have returned to pretty much normal and I think that during the week surely the original parking could still be allowed When we go there are usually only about six or less cars.

I can see the new lot being mandatory on weekends and holidays,

but on a normal weekday I cannot see how the original parking at the end of River Road impedes the farming residents There is enough width for the farming equipment to get by.

I think it is very unfair to have the only parking to be prohibitively far away from the area we enjoy for those of us locals with reduced mobility just because we have gotten old

It seems the decision has been taken by people who seldom or never use the Brunswick Point Trail If they were regular users, they would know how important this trail is to locals.

Instead, by prohibiting parking along the road, this new parking lot, with its 30 stalls, it’s going to be ridiculously small Disappointed people will be obliged to turn around

I can understand the residents at the end of River Road don’t want to see parked cars from their windows

BC Hydro virtual open houses: George Massey Tunnel Transmission Relocation Project

The Province is proposing to replace the existing four-lane George Massey Tunnel with a new, eight-lane immersed tube tunnel, and will decommission the existing tunnel once the new tunnel is in operation.

A section of one of our power lines crosses the Fraser River through the existing George Massey Tunnel, so we need to relocate it before the tunnel is decommissioned. We’re studying three alternatives that include both overhead and underground lines for this project.

We’re hosting two virtual open houses to introduce to you the three alternatives we’re studying Please come and share your views with us

Cars line up at rush hour down the hill to crawl uphill, because of a stop sign where there is neither an intersection nor pedestrian crossing Has somebody been

Does all the burning of fuel and driverfrustration really warrant a stop sign at this place? Perhaps there may be a better solution to the problem, which nobody seems to understand. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps?

Please Mr trafficengineer let us in on your

learned secret for the justified need to have a thousand drivers stop at this location every time they come up Imperial Hill and perhaps give us an estimate of the associated cost of fuel and frustration by the puzzled drivers who feel too embarrassed to ask such a silly question

More thoughts on Paterson dog park

Editor:

I would like to add some points to the recent letter from Mrs Mikulik concerning the Paterson park dog leash area (Optimist, Jan. 5).

* It may be the best one in the Lower Mainland

* This very large taxpayer outlay should have been used to help needy

humans

* In my opinion, it is being ignored by dogs and their owners I have made seven trips to observe it and have not seen one dog enjoying his freedom inside the park

* I have however witnessed many dogs running around in the open

area around the track

* I do not believe dog owners will drop off their pets in the enclosed area while they proceed with their own exercise on the oval track.

I hope I am wrong and it works out, but I still think our leaders should put people first.

Cityappointsnewparksdirector

The City of Delta’s new director of Parks, Recreation and Culture has a plate full of projects for 2023

The city announced this week that Trent Reid has been appointed to the role, having first joined the city in 1998 and progressing through multiple key positions in the organization.

Most recently, he served as Deputy Director of Major Projects in the Parks, Recreation and Culture department He also has extensive experience in the Engineering and Engineering Operations areas, including nearly five years leading the operations branch

“It truly is an honour to be considered for a role like this It’s a big role in the City of Delta, a huge department with a lot of responsibility,” Reid told

the Optimist. Reid said there’s many exciting projects and initiatives spearheaded by council, which committed financially to improving parks, adding additional capital funding for new facilities as well as updating existing facilities

Some of the projects include the washroom replacement at Memorial Park, ongoing enhancements at parks such as North Delta Community Park and other fields, while building improvements slated for 2023 include, among others, the Ladner Leisure Centre. Planning will begin or is underway on a plethora of other projects over the next couple of years

“The benefit for me is that I’ve been fortunate enough to have been working in Delta for a few years and in the last couple of years my focus was facilities and improv-

ing facilities, so I’m hitting the ground running and we continue on with what council has set out as its vision,” Reid added

A city news release notes that in his new role, Reid will lead a dedicated team of employees while being responsible for the implementation of council’s exciting plan for parks, recreation and culture

“On behalf of council I want to congratulate Trent on his new role as Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture. I have worked with Trent for many years and appreciate his ability to get things done and his dedication to serving the community This is an exciting time for parks, recreation and culture in Delta and I have full confidence in Trent’s ability to continue driving this department forward to provide great service for the community,” said Mayor George Harvie

NAV CANADA hosts flight path info sessions

Delta residents will have an opportunity to get information and provide input on NAV CANADA’s proposed plan to change aircraft flight movements over residential neighbourhoods.

In collaboration with the Vancouver Airport Authority, NAV CANADA recently launched a public consultation process on its proposal for airspace modernization surrounding Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

Several NAV CANADA information sessions are taking place throughout the Lower Mainland including one for the New Westminster/ North Surrey/North Delta areas on Jan. 17 at the Surrey

Libraries - City Centre Branch (10350 University Dr.) from 5 to 8 p.m.

Another session for the Ladner/ Tsawwassen areas will be held on Jan 18 at Delta Secondary, also from 5 to 8 p m

NAV CANADA is proposing changes to approach procedures at YVR including the addition of new satellite-based procedures, known as Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required (RNP AR), and changes to existing arrival routes and procedures

According to NAV CANADA, the more efficient arrival procedures will reduce an aircraft’s flight time resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and some avoidance of residentially populated areas

In some cases, aircraft arriving using the proposed RNP AR approach procedures from certain directions are estimated to fly over as many as 61,000 fewer people

It was back in 2018 when NAV CANADA announced that it was launching the Vancouver Airspace Modernization Project (VAMP) to review aircraft approach and departure operations in the Greater Vancouver and Southern Vancouver Island regions

The City of Delta at the time conveyed several concerns and suggestions, including creating routes over unpopulated areas like oceans, highways, industrial/commercial areas, as well as focus the airspace design on the areas that are most impacted

The YVR 2037 Master Plan, approved by the federal government, projects aircraft movements over Tsawwassen would increase by more than 430 per cent

According to a YVR report, Tsawwassen had 58 daily aircraft movements over the community in 2015, but by 2037, that number is expected to increase to 312 daily aircraft movements

Meanwhile, North Delta would experience a 154 per cent increase by 2037

For more information about the proposed changes and how to provide input at an event or online, check https:// www.navcanada.ca/ en/air-traffic/airspacereviews/vancouverairspace-modernization aspx

SafetyreviewcouldbringchangestoLadnerroadway

Road safety measures could be implemented for an avenue in Ladner that was scene of a pair of recent motor vehicle collisions

The city’s engineering department in October launched a review of 47A Avenue following the incidents, resulting

in heavy vehicle damage, but fortunately no injuries, which prompted safety concerns including speeds

Engineering director Steven Lan provided an update for the Optimist, saying staff have reviewed ICBC claims information and traffic data including speeds and volumes along 47A Avenue from 47A Street

to Delta Street

Staff also retained a transportation consultant to provide peak hour traffic and pedestrian counts at the intersections of 47A Avenue and Delta Street, Garry Street and 48B Street

The engineering department anticipates the information from the transportation consultant will be completed this month

Staff will also be compiling the information for discussion with Delta Police at an upcoming meeting of Delta’s Transportation Technical Committee, including possible road safety measures that could be implemented along the corridor, said Lan

The department anticipates it would seek public feedback on any

proposed changes following the discussion with police

Meanwhile, the city with the help of a consulting firm, will be conducting community engagement to obtain feedback to help develop Delta’s Vision Zero Strategy

Vision Zero is a multinational road traffic safety project that aims

to achieve a road system with no fatalities or serious injuries

One of the key differences between Vision Zero and traditional approaches to road safety is that traffic collisions are considered preventable, viewing safety as a shared responsibility between system designers, policy makers and road users

CityeyeingdikeupgradeprojectatBoundaryBay

The City of Delta is hoping to get some dollars to help shore up the dike at Boundary Bay

At a recent meeting, council approved a staff recommendation to apply for a grant through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program

– Green Infrastructure –Adaptation and Disaster Mitigation program

The city is hoping to get the funding as well as money for potential cost increases, including any unexpected costs, for

the proposed Boundary Bay dike improvement project in a cost-sharing arrangement

The project is to improve approximately 500 metres of dike by increasing the dike crest elevation from approximately 3 4 metres geodetic to 4.7 metres geodetic along the Boundary Bay Dike Trail, between 72nd and 88th streets

The project will address future sea level rise

The government program includes a shared financial contribution of 40 per cent from the

federal government, 33 3 percent from the province and 26 67 per cent from municipal government

The City of Delta’s commitment would total $411,923.

A staff report notes that as it’s a small-scale pilot project, the risk of cost overruns is low.

At the Union of BC Municipalities 2022 convention, a resolution to encourage the province to engage in consultation with local governments regarding dike funding was passed

The Metro Vancouver Flood Resiliency Task

Force, meanwhile, will continue to lobby the province on diking infrastructure in the B C

The province this September announced that it is gathering public feedback through its released Intentions Paper outlining a proposed flood strategy that will manage flood safety risks in B C

The purpose is to also re-engage First Nations, Indigenous organizations and local governments

A section looking at strengthening dikes and regulatory programs notes that more than 216

dikes in B C are provincially regulated They protect 16,000 hectares of land containing well over half a million people and thousands of buildings, with a total estimated value of more than $100 billion.

Currently, the vast majority no longer meet provincial standards, with one study estimating only five per cent of all dikes in the Lower Mainland meet current standards, the Intentions Paper warns.

A Delta staff report in 2022 on the city’s flood protection and

infrastructure initiatives outlined some ominous numbers facing the city, which has more than 67 km of dikes that require seismic and other upgrades to meet the latest standards

Facing the risk of flooding from coastal storm surges as well as the Fraser River spring freshet, the estimated cost, so far, for dike raising and seismic improvements by 2100 is at more than $1 9 billion, with the first phase alone, excluding seismic improvements, tabbed at $350 million

Province helping Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust

The Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust (DFWT) is partnering with the province on projects to improve soil health and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The provincial government recenty announced $150,000 in funding to provide educational support and funding for specific programs that promote the sustainable use of agricultural land Those programs include, among other

things, the DFWT’s grassland set-aside and winter cover crop programs, as well as the blueberry rest program, which will offer financial assistance to blueberry growers who remove fields that have become unproductive due to scorch virus

The funding will also be used for climatefocused soil health educational materials featuring annual field tours, printed resources and online content

“Through climatefocused initiatives like regenerative agriculture,

we are strengthening the legacy of complex ecosystems like the Fraser River estuary. The importance of soil health is front of mind as we work towards creating a strong and secure future for Richmond/Delta farmers and wildlife alike,” said Christine Schmalz, DFWT executive director. “We are pleased to partner with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to support farmers in implementing regenerative practices The funding will result in hundreds of acres of winter cover

crops within the Fraser River estuary.”

Regenerative agriculture is a strong defence against the effects of climate change and will help ensure a resilient ecosystem, while strengthening local food security, said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food.

Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon said by working with local organizations like the DFWT to implement regenerative agriculture practices, the rich soil of farmland surrounding the Fraser River estuary can be maintained.

Ladner has lost one of its greatest lacrosse players

Mike Kettles passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 24 at the age of 55, leaving behind his large family and a provincewide lacrosse community that greatly respected what he brought to the game

A proud member of one of Ladner’s pioneer families, Kettles decorated career included helping the New West Salmonbellies win the Mann Cup national senior “A” championship in 1989 and 1991.

The 6-foot-3 defender, nicknamed “Spud” by his teammates to reflect his family’s farming background, was known for his tireless work ethic on the lacrosse floor

Most nights he was matched up against top scorers from opposing teams in a shutdown role.

K.C Cook was the Salmonbellies president and GM at the time He last saw Kettles in the fall when the New

West team was officially inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame

“This comes as a shock and I am deeply saddened by the news, ” said Cook. “Mike was such a beauty Solid values, a rock in life and on the lacrosse floor He was liked and respected by all who knew him or met him Mike’s smile is engrained in our memories”

The youngest of Jack and Sharen Kettles’ four children, Mike had many opportunities to spend time in nature growing up in Ladner, where he developed a love for hunting and fishing that he continued into his adult years.

He teamed up with his brother Darren to help the Delta Farmers team win the annual Tug O’ War Trophy, a feat their grandfather and great-grandfather also accomplished.

After his decorated run with the Salmonbellies, Mike eventually moved to Vernon where he continued to play senior lacrosse and led his

team to a number of Interior League titles He also got to hoist the President’s Cup national senior “B” lacrosse championship in 1990 when he and longtime Ladner friend Scott Anderson were added to the host Burnaby Bandits’ roster He concluded his playing career in Prince George Mike was predeceased by his dad in 2020. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Tracy, his three daughters, Taylor (Ben), Danika (Greg), Hayley (Braedon), his grandson Jake Michael, his mom, his siblings Tracey (Lorne), Shelley (Robert) and Darren, along with many extended family members and great friends far and wide.

A celebration of life will be held at later date.

A hospitable community is a stronger one

In ancient times, hospitality toward strangers the act of opening up your home and resources to strangers was a vital part of culture

Imagine living in a village thousands of years ago, and you need to travel a long distance You don’t have cars, airplanes, or other means of convenient transportation; you are most likely going to travel on foot or maybe on an animal at best. This means your travel will be much slower than what you might expect today, and you cannot carry many things with you on this long journey Moreover, you ’ re not travelling on nice highways. You have rough terrains and dangerous roads ahead of you. Threats of bandits and wild beasts are real concerns associated with travelling, so you shouldn’t bring valuable items with you This means when you go

Minister’s Minute

PAUL PARK

through villages, you are relying on the generosity and hospitality of others (strangers) to sustain you on this journey This is why the society established expectations of hospitality. It was honourable to show hospitality to strangers and shameful to deny a stranger that showed up at your door.

The Old Testament law reflects this value. God commanded his people to “treat the stranger who sojourns with you

as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself” (Lev. 19:3334), and “when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner” (Lev. 23:22).

With the current economic challenges, it may seem natural for people to retract their generosity and hunker down to care for themselves However, we are more at risk as a community when people aren’t looking out for each other A radically hospitable community is a stronger community We have a higher chance of flourishing as a city when we obey God’s command to be a hospitable community; sacrificing our own resources and opening our homes to serve one another in love. I pray our city will be a hospitable place for everyone.

Regular rest days are vital to avoid overuse injuries

Momentum can be a valuable asset as people pursue their fitness goals

Once a fitness routine picks up steam and begins to produce results, the resulting momentum can make it easier for individuals to fully commit to exercise and ultimately achieve, if not exceed, their initial goals

A successful fitness regimen includes various components, not the least of which is sufficient rest As individuals gain momentum and inch closer to their fitness goals, it can be tempting to skip off days But rest is vital, allowing the body to recover and thus reducing athletes’ risk for various injuries, including overuse injuries

What is an overuse injury?

All physical activities carry a certain measure of risk. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts suffer injuries each day that have nothing to do with overuse.

Such injuries often aren’t preventable, but overuse injuries are These injuries affect muscles or joints, and may be caused by training errors or mistakes with technique Training errors include exercising for too long or doing too much of a certain activity The resulting strain caused by overuse leads to injury One common example of a technique

Rest is vital, allowing the body to recover and thus reducing athletes’ risk for various injuries, including overuse injuries.

error that can cause an overuse injury is improper form when performing strength training exercises. Coaches and personal trainers can illustrate proper techniques when using strength training equipment or lifting free weights Such instruction can greatly reduce athletes’ risk for overuse injuries

Can other factors contribute to overuse injuries?

Athletes should know that overuse injuries are not always a result of errors with their training or technique Adults and parents of young athletes should discuss fitness regimens with their physicians or children’s pediatricians prior to beginning a routine. Such a discussion may

uncover intrinsic risk factors athletes are unaware they have.

Extrinsic risk factors for overuse injuries include surfaces; equipment, including shoes; environmental conditions; and nutrition

Athletes can act as their own watchdogs to prevent overuse injuries caused by extrinsic factors, examining equipment and playing surfaces to ensure they’re functional and safe, and eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet

Overuse injuries are almost always preventable Though it can be hard to take a break from an exercise routine that’s producing results, rest is integral to a successful fitness regimen –Metro Creative

Delta in Richmond tonight for final meeting with Sockeyes

Shaky goaltending and blowing leads are hardly ingredients for a key win over your biggest rival unless you happen to be the Delta Ice Hawks

The high-flying Pacific Junior Hockey League club needed its offence firing on all cylinders in a wild 7-6 win over the Richmond Sockeyes to close out the annual PJHL Winter Classic at Minoru Arenas back on New Year’s Day.

Delta has reeled off three more victories since and will take a league best 29-5-0-0 record back to Richmond tonight, looking to secure the Tunnel Cup regular season rivalry series

The Ice Hawks twice squandered two goal leads (2-0 and 4-2) and that was enough to chase

starting goaltender Merik Erickson in the process. The Sockeyes erased 5-4 and 6-5 deficits in the third period, but didn’t have an answer for Brayden Sinclair’s hat trick goal with 64 seconds remaining.

The 17-year-old rookie standout, who has committed to the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Brooks Bandits next season, sits third in league scoring with 61 points in 32 games He is one of 10 Ice Hawks averaging a point-per-game or more

“When you are blowing leads like that it is easy to get frustrated, but the level of determination I saw on that last shift, that created that goal, you could tell the boys weren’t going to be denied and they were pissed off,” said Ice Hawks GM and head coach Steve Robinson “They stayed in

the moment and weren’t getting too caught up on what had happened by just continuing to work hard. That was a good thing to see, just the resiliency to stay with it.

“We gave up 40 shots that game and they scored some nice goals while playing with a lot of jump You knew they were going

to be highly motivated and ready for that game. ”

The Sockeyes and Hawks are tied for top spot in the Tom Shaw Conference with Delta enjoying four games in hand.

“I think if we end up splitting (the final two head-to-head games) it will keep (the battle for

first) competitive where if we win both it pretty much solidifies getting to where we want to get to,” continued Robinson “I know the boys are going to be beefed up for (Thursday). Whether we win or not, who knows I think they have a little venom for us like we do for them”

Coquitlam school wins T-Town Classic at SDSS

The larger 4A schools flexed their muscles to sweep the podium at South Delta Secondary’s T-Town Classic senior boys basketball tournament

The 12-team event featured an assortment of schools from the 4A and 3A tiers of BC Boys High School Basketball based on enrollment size

Following four days of action, Coquitlam’s

Dr Charles Best Blue Devils came away with top honours after a 77-68 win over Victoria’s Belmont Bulldogs in Saturday’s championship game

The Blue Devils’ run to the title included an 83-62 victory over host South Delta in the semi-finals, after earlier victories against Pitt Meadows (88-58) and Abbotsford’s MEI Eagles (71-62) Six-foot-3 senior

Mateo Gallant was a major force throughout and earned tournament MVP honours

Belmont earned its way to the championship game with an 87-72 upset win over North Vancouver’s Handsworth in the semis

The Royals entered the week ranked No 10 in the province among 4A schools The Bulldogs also defeated

the Delta Pacers 75-55 in Thursday’s quarterfinals Handsworth bounced back in in the third place game, opening up a 19-0 first quarter lead over South Delta, then staving off a gritty comeback by the hosts to eventually win 80-63

Sun Devils’ Grade 11 forward Finley McConnell was named an all-star
