TFNmarks14th anniversaryoftreaty

Tsawwassen First Nation and other Coast Salish people flourished in this region for nearly 9,000 years.

Tsawwassen was greatly impacted by colonization and development, including the creation of both the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and the Roberts Bank Terminal, completely eradicating the ability to harvest foods on the foreshore as had been the practice for thousands of years

To address some of these impacts, Tsawwassen First Nation tried to reset their relationship with governments and joined the treaty negotiations in 1992 after BC Treaty Commission was established

April 3 marks the 14th year anniversary of the Tsawwassen First Nation Treaty effective date of April 3, 2009 It’s been a remarkable journey through the negotiation, ratification, and on-going implementation

it a self-reliant nation. Tsawwassen’s new framework has also allowed for residential development that welcomes a significant non-member population to live on Tsawwassen leased lands

Open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Since the treaty, Tsawwassen Government has taken appropriate steps to invest in strategic infrastructure projects (new roads, buildings, sewage treatment facility, etc ) to boost the local economy and make

Within the last three years, TFN has also benefited from commercial and industrial development including investments from huge employers like Amazon Many other projects have been completed and are on-going on Tsawwassen Lands

However, this economic development is a means to an end It has

enabled unprecedented levels of investment in Tsawwassen infrastructure and community facilities

The Youth Centre was opened in February 2021, and construction of the new Elders Centre is underway with completion targeted for 2024.

With the “ no member left behind” principle, enhancing affordable housing has been a priority for Chief and Executive Council A new multi-family affordable rental development with 36 townhouse units is under construction for

TFN Member families, allowing the continued reunification of our community.

The most important aspect Tsawwassen Government has focused on, within the last five years, is building internal capacity Increased staff and increased spending on education and skills development, health and social services are intended to make a strong nation that can combat the multi-generation impacts of colonization.

The types of challenges TFN must overcome are

systemic and at a scale that is hard for most to appreciate However, being a modern treaty and self-governing nation allows Tsawwassen First Nation to make independent decisions and prioritize projects that the community requires These past 14 years have shown what can be accomplished with the right tools, and this is only the beginning With all of these successes Tsawwassen First Nation Treaty Day is truly a day to celebrate, not just for Tsawwassen, but for everyone

DPDarrestshooting suspectinPrinceGeorge

The long arm of the law extended from Delta to Prince George last week.

That led to the arrest of a youth suspect after police surrounded a vehicle in a fast-food restaurant parking lot in the 1000 block of Central Street West

Delta Police took the youth into custody after making the trip to Prince George to apprehend the suspect, believed to be connected to a shooting Dec 29 in South Delta

The youth, whose age prohibits identification, was apparently involved

in the early-morning incident after police received reports of shots fired into an occupied residence in the 5300 block of 4A Avenue in Tsawwassen.

DPD later arrested a youth from Surrey known to police, who faces several firearms charges

There were no injuries as a result of that shooting

While it is unusual for a Lower Mainland city police force to send officers to north central B C to make an arrest, there are no jurisdictional boundaries in this case

“Typically we would have an agency of jurisdiction try and do an

arrest but our people have some specific knowledge to the point where we decided to send our investigators to Prince George,” said Delta Police Acting Insp. James Sandberg “We are sworn provincially so there’s no concerns about jurisdiction”

Three police vehicles provided by Prince George RCMP were used for the takedown Sandberg confirmed the Delta officers involved in the arrest flew to Prince George Sandberg said the youth arrested in Prince George will likely make a first court appearance in Prince George

Ladneroutdoorpool nowopentothepublic

It was not an early April Fool’s Day joke or an optical illusion: the Ladner outdoor pool is now ready for use

The unprecedented early opening on Monday, which is about two months ahead of the usual schedule, coincides with the closure of the Ladner Leisure Centre (LLC) pool for the next six months (March 27-to-Oct 1) for mandatory roof repairs.

According to Dan Cooper, Delta’s Deputy Director of Parks and Planning, extensive work has been done to prepare the pool for the cool overnight and early morning temperatures that will result in high demand of the water heating system

“Recent work includes the replacement of the pool’s boilers, which should give us a more efficient and resilient heating system moving forward,” said Cooper. “Our typical indoor pool temperature is 82F (28C), but we ’ re aiming to have the outdoor pool up to 83F due to the cooler outdoor air temperature this early in the spring”

LLC regular length swimmers, Aquafitters, and water-walkers will

be able to complete their circuits and classes at the outdoor pool

Length swimmers and water-walkers are welcome for weekday morning (7 to 11 a m ) and afternoon/evening sessions (3:30 to 7:30 p m ) There are also weekend sessions from 8 a m to noon

Aqua Fitness classes are also scheduled for Wednesdays at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.

The cleanup continues following an oil spill in East Ladner

According to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, on March 10th, the City of Delta reported a suspected oil sheen in a ditch at the North 40 Park Reserve.

It was determined that the product migrated off a neighbouring property that has a greenhouse operation

The city placed spill pads and contacted the adjacent property to determine the source, which turned out to be a small leak in one of the farm’s diesel tanks, the ministry notes, adding the spill was stopped by the next day

Since the release occurred over time, it made the exact volume released into the environment difficult to determine.

The tank has been

drained, which means there is no longer any product being released into the environment

The greenhouse operator, Pure Sunfarms, and the city also retained a spill contractor to cleanup the off-site ditches, which included mobilizing a vacuum truck

The ministry on Thursday told the Optimist that the cleanup continues.

Delta Engineering

director Steven Lan said the work is ongoing for a section of ditch on the northern park boundary

A city sign has been in place advising people to not allow their dogs into the ditch.

Located near the Boundary Bay Airport, the Churchill Street park is popular with dog walkers, with many walking their dogs off-leash, and has a variety of wildlife including eagles

Delta Police say that the department received a call at 12:45 a.m. regarding an unknown person passed out behind the wheel of a pickup truck in the 4900 block of Westminster Ave , in Ladner

Acting Insp James Sandberg said a concerned citizen checked on the man to ensure his welfare and once the man was awake, he drove away.

Sandberg said approximately four blocks later, the driver crashed the truck into two parked cars

“When the dispatchers queried the licence plate, the dispatcher learned the truck had been stolen from Tsawwassen that same morning,” said Sandberg. “Following the crash, the suspect driver attempted to flee the scene, but was detained by witnesses and Delta firefighters who were called to the scene, until the arrival of the responding police officers”

OPINION

Saveup folks

What Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland delivered Tuesday was what we were generally expecting, thanks to the leaks: a grocery-rebate program, an expansion of national dental care, tax credits for clean economy investment, and cuts to outsourcing of contracts, among them.

With the goodies nicely sprayed into the atmosphere for several days, some of the more difficult news was saved for the speech and what government hopes to be a one-day wonder, in particular that the deficit will hit $40 1 billion in the fiscal year ending this month, up from the estimated $30 6 billion Freeland predicted only a few months ago

There is no greater clarity on the government’s fiscal direction This just doesn’t appear to be in the cards for this government, no matter how it hints at fiscal anchors and frameworks

The federal debt has grown 92 2 per cent during the Justin Trudeau administration to a projected $1.3 trillion and there is no timeline any longer for a balanced budget. Tuesday’s is a loot bag of higher taxes, subsidies and regulations. One couldn’t walk faster away from an economic growth strategy than the Liberals are.

Budgets are at times about preserving tenuous political support. The $13 billion expansion of the dental program is in effect a political concession by the minority Liberal government to the NDP to buy its votes in the Commons. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is right: it wouldn’t have happened without them, nor for that matter would the cringe-worthy line Freeland delivered that our smiles will no longer depend on our incomes

Budgets are at times about aligning with our neighbours to the south The $20 9 billion, five-year program of investment tax credits for clean technology and renewable energy positions Canada in relative lockstep with measures under the Biden administration Wouldn’t have happened without him.

The government has no shortage of skill in determining how to spend, and there is likely one more wave of its assuaging next year of the NDP to forestall the election to 2025 Call your grandchildren and tell them to save. Consider this advice a pre-budget leak

Mapping out our farming future

Delta’s newly minted Agricultural and Hunting Regulation Advisory Committee (AHRAC) has had a chance to review the revised, and close to being completed draft agriculture plan this week It is expected that the draft plan will be presented to mayor and council for approval by the end of the spring

A lot has happened in 12 years and the new draft agriculture plan notes some of the paramount issues and concerns facing the farming community and our general well-being as a community rooted in a long farming heritage The plan will “ultimately contribute to the community’s long-term sustainability”

Top of mind issues arising in the plan include adapting to climate change scenarios including sea level rise and associated diking and dredging issues, farm worker housing dilemmas, mobility and transportation for farm equipment, land use guidelines and education around food and farming.

Unfortunately, the average age of farmers is not decreasing and only 19 per cent of

farm families in Delta have succession plans in place

This alarming statistic poses a potential threat to supply chain issues down the road, which will result in food cost increases and tells us that we need to stimulate an immediate interest amongst younger generations to pursue careers in agri-food and agri-tech

Data from a couple of surveys conducted for the draft plan show that Deltans want to access local food and they want to support our local farmers When the more than 600 respondents were asked if farming and food should be a part of school curriculum, 85 per cent said yes

The third goal within the plan is to “ grow communica-

tion, education, and celebration of Delta farmers and agriculture”

The draft plan notes that Delta has a “history of successful educational programs in schools related to agriculture and food, however, survey results indicated that there is room to improve awareness of these initiatives as well as increase agricultural education in schools Likewise, a desire to share knowledge and (re) introduce food literacy skills around growing, preserving, and preparing healthy local foods (regardless of economic class) was identified by the community during project engagement Broad-based and specific educational needs for school-aged children and their families, consumers, and elected officials are key opportunities raised by stakeholders”

The draft plan suggests that an agriculture and education subcommittee of the AHRAC be formed to develop relationships with the Delta School District and the agriculture community. A chart within the plan lists “advocating for the strengthening of agriculture education in the classroom environment” a highest priority

Usegrantforlevel3 chargers

Editor:

Re: City receives funding for electric vehicle infrastructure (Optimist, March 2).

The City of Delta is not up to date on where the EV charging network is at and where it will be moving forward.

First I should note that I only own EVs, and have since 2013, and believe they are our future. I have travelled over 200,000 km with them so I understand charging needs

What has to catch up now is the fast-charging infrastructure.

To explain, a level 2 charger will give you about 30 km of range per hour of charge

A level 3 fast charger can go at a rate of over 1,000 km/hr. of charge.

Delta is using the money for 20 level 2 chargers and one level 3. As we have seen at Tsawwassen Commons, most of the level 2 chargers sit empty It’s not worth plugging in for an hour while you shop to gain 30 km of range. In the world of EV charging these 10-year-old chargers are outdated and are good for overnight charging only

These newly funded chargers do make sense for the city vehicles at Delta Fleet facilities by plugging in after your dayshift and they will be ready with a full charge the next morning, however the 20 chargers the city plans to install at public facilities will be rarely used

A good example of

Newspaper Size Change April 6

how fast chargers in a proper location make sense, just look at what Tesla does In our community they have 12 fast chargers at the rear of the Tsawwassen Mall that are almost always in use as a normal charge will be around 15 to 20 minutes and no more than one hour if you are completely “empty” During that time there are numerous things to keep you busy in the mall You will find most Tesla chargers in North America are set up with amenities nearby. This grant should be used for level 3 fast chargers only Yes, level 3 is more expensive to install, but it’s better to have four level 3 charges that get used, than 20 level 2 that don’t Wave Steinwand

App aiding police on mental health calls

Delta Police frontline officers and the community are benefitting from a health software application.

That was the update from Chief Neil Dubord on the department’s use of the HealthIM app during a presentation at the Delta Police Board’s March 15 meeting

In October 2019, the department became the first police department in B C to use HealthIM, which supports the frontline work of police officers in dealing with calls associated with mental health concerns and is being used in partnership with the Fraser Health Authority HealthIM translates an officer’s description of observations into clinical language for hospital

staff and sends the information to the hospital to prepare for intake, with staff being informed of circumstances prior to an individual’s arrival at the hospital, Dubord’s report to the board explains.

He said since implementation, HealthIM usage has provided several benefits including, among other things, improved nursing safety, as well as improved information sharing and communication with Delta Mental Health, by having the apprehending officer send reports directly, removing time delays and reducing the amount of time and redundancy for the DPD Mental Health Unit to make referrals

“Our officers have been using this for three years and we ’ ve had some success with it. What we ’ ve found, since this time,

is we have more officers being available on the road because their wait times at the hospital has been reduced,” Dubord told the board

His report notes that in 2022, the app was utilized to conduct 396 assessments involving 328 individuals The variance between the number of assessments and individuals is due to repeated contact with some people

The 396 assessments resulted in 346 apprehensions under the Mental Health Act, requiring a DPD officer, or a Community Safety Officer, to accompany the individual to the hospital

Prior to the implementation, the average wait time for officers at a hospital was 130 minutes. In 2022, the average wait time was 110 minutes, down by seven minutes from 2021

Delta hoping for Boundary Bay flood prevention dollars

sgyarmati@delta-optimist com

Delta council has endorsed a staff recommendation for a grant request to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) for Boundary Bay dike improvements

The funding request, under the UBCM’s Disaster Risk Reduction - Climate Adaptation program, if approved, would see $2 million granted for raising the dike in a pilot project between 72nd and 88th streets

The program ’ s application deadline was in February, so staff had already submitted an application, but required council’s endorsement to complete the application package

The proposed project would improve approximately 750 linear metres of dike by increasing the

dike crest elevation from approximately 3 4 metres to 4 7 metres geodetic along the Boundary Bay Dike Trail to address future sea level rise

A report to council notes that the detailed design of the dike improvements is complete and has been submitted to the province for approval

The original scope of the project was to undertake a 200-metre section of dike upgrades as a pilot project with funding from Delta’s 2023 capital plan, but if the grant submission is successful, it would provide additional funding to further extend the upgrades

To minimize the cost, Delta is proposing to use construction fill as an innovative method to raise dikes

Coun. Dylan Kruger, who chairs Metro Vancouver’s Flood Resiliency Committee,

said the 2021 flooding of Sumas Prairie highlights that action is needed immediately.

“The events of the Sumas flood a couple of years ago really reminded all local governments in the Lower Mainland that we can’t continue to compete with each other for scarce senior government grant funding We have to collaborate and work together and try to find some sort of scientific, objective means of prioritizing our diking and flood mitigation needs across the region Because, when one of our municipalities hit, we ’ re not in isolation The entire region is affected, so there is some urgency in this,” said Kruger

While the B.C. government is moving forward with formulating a new flood strategy, work needs to continue regionally on the issue as well, he added

Delta`s population and demographics are changing according to a recent staff report to council.

City seeks feedback on new park waste receptacle program

The City of Delta wants to hear from residents what they think about a new waste receptacle program at several local parks

The survey is to get feedback on the program, which aims to significantly reduce the amount of cross-contamination found in park garbage bins.

The city last summer installed multistream receptacles at seven parks, including a receptacle for dog waste That stream collects pet waste for processing at a wastewater facility with other sewage, instead of ending up in the landfill.

The other containers are for garbage and one for mixed containers for recycling.

The multi-stream receptacles are located at Diefenbaker Park, Delview Park, Dugald Morrison Park, Mackie Park, Memorial Park, North Delta Community Park, and Winskill Park. There are two multi-stream receptacles at each park location.

According to the city, a recent waste characterization study was conducted by the Township of Langley, which indicates that 17 per cent of the materials disposed of at parks are recyclable and 63 per cent are dog waste

The City of Delta notes that diverting waste from the landfill helps reduce greenhouse emissions, ensures recycled materials are repurposed for future uses and dog waste is diverted to a proper water treatment facility.

The need to establish a separate stream for dog waste is further emphasized by Metro Vancouver’s Disposal Ban Program, which requires that no more than five per cent of waste taken to the landfill contain pet excrement, the city notes.

The survey is available until 11:59 p m on Friday, March 31 Call 604-9463293 for more information about the survey and the pilot program

A final report is to come to council this summer

There are now four new AEDs in Delta parks

Last week the City of Delta, in a partnership with St John Ambulance, installed publicly accessible, life-saving Automated External Defibrillator (AED) stands at four of Delta’s parks

The stands include an AED unit and a first aid kit for bystanders to use when someone is experiencing cardiac arrest.

The locations of the new AED stands are:

North Delta Community Park – 11311 84th Ave

John Oliver Park – 11590 Ladner Trunk Road

Holly Park – 4681 62nd St

Fred Gingell Park – 253 English Bluff Road

“Considering most cardiac arrests happen away from hospitals, these stands provide essential tools to the public in the event someone experiences a major medical emergency, ” said the City of Delta in a news release.

According to the city, the installation of the AED units is part of St. John Ambulance’s Start Me Up BC program,

City advising drivers of upcoming Arthur Drive closure

The City of Delta is advising motorists they will need to find an alternate route for an upcoming closure of a major Ladner roadway

The engineering department says Arthur Drive south of Whitworth Crescent will be closed during the replacement of a culvert.

The project will require the full closure of Arthur Drive from Thursday, April 6 at 7 p.m. to Tuesday, April 11 at 5 a m

The closure is necessitated due to a planned relining and rehabilitation of existing twin culverts along the Mason Canal at Arthur Drive.

The existing infrastructure is at the end of its service life and in need of replacement, according to the engineering department, noting the

twin circular culverts are to be replaced with a box culvert which includes a baffle system to provide flexibility for managing water levels during the irrigation season

The box culvert is to eliminate flow constraint

along Mason Canal and improve drainage in the area. The project is to also improve the supply of irrigation water to west Ladner and facilitate future irrigation water supply to Westham Island

Spring is here!

The March 20 equinox – the first day the sun was above the horizon for 12 hours - heralded many bird migration movements and calls.

Tsawwassen’s Great Blue Heron rookery became very squawky last week when more than 200 herons arrived at their nests

A male Rufous Hummingbird made first-of-year appearance at a Beach Grove feeder

Local Anna’s Hummingbirds have flown off, while other Anna’s arrive from as far south as Mexico to nest here.

Overwintering birds, particularly ducks, geese and swans, head to their northern and inland breeding grounds Others just pass through our Fraser River Delta, stopping briefly to refuel. This area is a vital region of the Pacific Flyway that stretches from Alaska to

the southern tip of South America.

Trumpeter Swans honk away as if to say goodbye as they depart from Roberts Bank tidal foreshores and farm fields. American Wigeon squeak their departure, while Mallards quack in unison as they leave Southlands.

Swooping clouds of Delta’s winter shorebird, Dunlin, maneuver in calculated rhythm along shorelines Massive flocks of peeping Western Sandpipers, newly arrived from South America, fuel up ontidal mudflats biofilm before the last 5,000 km leg of their journey to the Arctic tundra

Large rafts of ocean diving ducks like Surf Scoters suddenly vanish Colourful Harlequin Ducks fly inland to breed along mountain streams Cavity nesters like Wood Ducks, Barn Owls and Tree Swallows search for old trees to nest in The Cascade Bird Box Team, dedicated local

volunteers, builds supplementary nest boxes for select species.

Spring migration continues until June arrivals of warblers, vireos, and flycatchers - all insectivorous birds To survive they require flowering trees and shrubs that attract bugs.

Last week I heard Tree Swallows chattering loudly above Deas

Island Park in some sort of discussion What bird will you hear or see this spring?

Until we’ve seen this journey through

When Jesus summarized the Greatest Commandment, he closely tied the love for God with the love for one ’ s neighbour

(Matthew 22 34-40)

In The Servant Song, Richard Gillard points out that we humans on this planet earth are pilgrims on a journey, and companions on the road We are here to help each other to walk the mile and bear the load. As fellow pilgrims, we must: hold Christ’s light for each other in the night-time of our fears and hold out our hands speaking peace to each other

I like the fourth verse even better It says, “I will weep when you are weeping. When you laugh, I’ll laugh with you! I will share your joy and sorrow till we ’ ve seen this journey through!” Till we ’ ve seen this journey through!

Minister’s Minute

BASVI

St

Friends, life is not about me, myself and I; but about ‘ us ’ together!

The first step towards being selfless is realizing how much grace God has availed to us.

The second philosophy is “I am because they are. ”

We must all realize that we are what we are because others helped us along the way. When we understand that, it becomes a joy to help

others along their way.

Sometimes we may not realize how much we depend on others, but just remember those great words by John Donne, “No man is an island.”

We all somehow depend on others. What affects one of us directly affects all of us indirectly, as such, none of us is truly rich when others are poor. None of us is truly free when others are oppressed.

So, the great words of The Servant Song are a clarion call to a community that walks together: we are pilgrims on a journey, and companions on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load. I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you; I will share your joy and sorrow till we ’ ve seen this journey through

AugustineHouseopensnew“neighbourhood”

Augustine House’s new “neighbourhood” is a big hit and easily could have been triple the size to accommodate the ever-growing community demand for around-the-clock nursing care.

It was back in January when the Arthur Drive retirement residence opened Haven House South, instantly doubling the number of long-term suites to 24.

The impressive fully secured home-like area is a mirror image of the original Haven House North Licensed under the “Community Care and Assisted Living Act,” the ground floor wings feature an enclosed garden, a central living room, along with a dining room and kitchen area, where residents can participate in daily activities to the best of

their ability.

“We were very intentional to retain the smaller number of residents per neighborhood or household. This encourages feelings of belonging and community for the residents as well as allowing staff to meet the needs of each individual in a personalized way, ” says Jackie Reiners, Executive Director of Augustine House.

The additional suites in Haven House South were promptly filled.

By proving more long-term care support and services within the campus, couples that are already residing at Augustine House have the opportunity to remain close to one another in the event that one spouse should require more extensive care

“We were taking calls when the word got out that we were expanding, but it’s primarily residents who were living on the private side that transi-

tioned over here,” continued Reiners “We probably have about 30-to-35 people from outside of Ladner on a wait list. It reflects the number of people who are aging and are staying longer in their home Maybe they would have come to see us four years ago to get

on the wait list (for independent living suites), but then their health care needs change and they require coming right into this type of care. ”

Of the many Haven House features it’s one of the residents’ most frequent needs that management is thrilled to

provide.

“The thing I’m most proud about, honestly, is the showers, ” added Reiners “All of the showers in this space are rollin, so they will be able to rollin to their own bathroom and own shower It just leads to so much more dignity.”

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE

Helpgrowyour gardenconnections

Earthwise is celebrating 10 years of therapeutic horticulture programs in the garden.

Gardening and connecting with nature are now widely recognized as effective tools in promoting long-term health and well-being. Since initiating regular therapeutic horticulture programming, Earthwise has helped hundreds of people of all ages harness the healing power of nature

Earthwise Society’s Garden Buddies program uses therapeutic horticulture to improve health and well-being for seniors

Trained mentors are paired with seniors to share gardening and other nature-based activities outdoors in the beautiful Earthwise Garden. Isolation is a problem affecting many older adults in our community, especially those who live alone. The Garden Buddies program not only helps seniors stay active through gardening, it helps them make meaningful connections with others.

Earthwise Society is

inviting anyone who is interested in learning more about therapeutic horticulture and helping out with Garden Buddies, to attend a one-hour introductory Zoom session that will explore the many benefits of therapeutic horticulture and provide an overview of Earthwise and the Garden Buddies program Those who would like to become volunteer mentors will then take part in a free five-week mentor training program

The training program is a series of webinars and hands-on workshops that will teach mentors about the history and value of therapeutic horticulture

Mentors will learn skills and adaptations for gardening with seniors and how to use therapeutic horticulture to help provide healing and well-being to vulnerable people of all ages Training also includes an introduction to horticulture at the Earthwise Garden and tips on how to develop fun and engaging activities that take advantage of the garden setting

The program will be led by Katie McGillivray, a Registered Horticultural Therapist, who is keen to raise awareness of the powerful benefits of connecting people with nature.

“What is so unique about Garden Buddies is that it is intergenerational and communityled,” says McGillivray. “When you see the exchange of knowledge and strong connections that form between mentors and participants in this program, it is clear that this program is not only about growing gardens, but growing friendships and community as well.”

The introductory Mentor Training session will take place via Zoom on April 12, from 5 to 6 p.m. and is open to people of all ages Those who wish to continue with the training program will be asked to commit to 40 hours volunteering over the course of the season.

Whimsical sculpture brings joy to children at Pioneer Library

LAUREL JOHNSON

Contributing Writer

When we think of sculpture, the classic marbles of Michelangelo readily spring to mind, and anyone who has viewed “The Archer” by Henry Moore, has noted the gradual changes appearing this century both in medium and in content Modern artists are using different mediums, such as the glass of Dale Ghihuly

What’s happening in B.C. - there is a Sculpture Society One of their members is our own Ralph Heading, a Tsawwassen resident, who has taken the wonderful gremlins and ogres conjured by illustrators in the Ed Emberly book Go Away Big Green Monster and Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild

Things Are and created a whimsical display at the Ladner Pioneer Library Heading’s imagination is amazing. The sculptures are mounted and smile down on the youngest library patrons – every kind of monster has such a whimsical quality that adults and children are sure to find chase any monster out of their life

“The reason this was created was to say thanks for the Pioneer Library having shown both my kids and grandkids to love books and reading,” he told the Optimist

The display is on-going during March and April, so be sure to take a look and take your children and grandchildren to the Ladner Pioneer Library.

South Delta rolls to another U18 provincial title with six straight victories

It was a dominant performance on home ice from startto-finish for the South Delta Storm

The A1 rep team is B.C. Hockey’s U18 Tier 2 provincial champions for the second straight year after a perfect fourday run at the Ladner Leisure Centre

The Storm blanked the Cloverdale Colts 4-0 in last Wednesday’s gold medal game in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Ladner Leisure Centre

It was the host’s sixth straight win of the nine-team tournament that saw them outscore their opponents 35-8 in the process, including 10-0 in in the final two playoff games

A year ago in Campbell River, the run to gold was unchartered waters for an association that has only made a handful of provincial tournament appearances over the past decade This

time, the expectation from day one was returning to the top of the podium thanks to a solid core of returning players and some impressive talent coming back to play with their long-time friends again

The end result was the Storm being highly competitive as the lone Tier 2 team in Pacific Coast Amateur’s top flight for regular season play, then rolling through the playoffs.

“I’ll be honest with you I have been thinking about (repeating) since we were in the ferry lineup last year (coming home from Campbell River),” said South Delta head coach Ken Priestlay.

“I know we had a good team with lot of people coming back It was only a matter of just trying to figure out who else would fill the roles of those departing third-years. The guys that did come back, with the rest of the third-years and our first-years, played exceptional It really was a true team effort

“We wanted to make sure we

were the (team to beat) as the host and the champions coming out of it It didn’t take long for this group to figure out that they had some talent, but it took a little bit longer for them to all play together Once they got it, they were unbeatable.”

It was one of the key newcomers that set the tone in the gold medal game when Johnathan Milne opened the scoring midway through the first period. The former Delta Ice Hawk finished the championships with a teamleading 16 points, including five goals

Fletcher Lucas and William McColman added to the lead 52 seconds apart and the suddenlyreeling Colts needed to call a timeout to re-group.

The three-goal cushion was more than enough for workhorse goaltender Brady MacDonald who would go on to record his second shutout of the day after South Delta’s earlier 6-0 semi-final win over Penticton.

Milne’s twin brother Zachary rounded out the scoring in the late stages of the second period It was the Storm’s third win over Cloverdale this month after a 7-1 romp in the Pacific Coast Final Four playoffs then a 3-1 triumph in round-robin play on day one of provincials The Colts slipped past the Sea-to-Sky Bears 3-1 in the other semi-final match-up as Pacific Coast teams dominated the championships.

Priestlay expected a big turnout for the gold medal game and his hometown didn’t let him down

“Ladner supports Ladner things. When we said that we were going to host this we knew it was going to be a special event,” added Priestlay. “It was a special night for a bunch of young kids that have emerged themselves in this sport for so long Our (graduating) players got to go out playing in front of basically a filled arena It was a lot of fun and a great atmosphere.”

South Delta Sun Devils

Grade 9 boys basketball

team has capped a terrific season with a historic achievement

The Sun Devils wrapped up their campaign earlier this month at the B.C. Grade 9 Invitational Championships in South Surrey They are the firstever boys hoop team at the Tsawwassen school to qualify for a provincial tournament in any age group

They did so but finishing second at last month’s South Fraser Championships, falling to eventual provincial runner-up Grandview Heights 54-45 in the title game Earlier wins came against Semiahmoo (6741) and Elgin Park (6159) in the semi-finals. Making the feat even

more impressive was consistently going up against larger schools with no tiering in the young grade levels

South Delta was seeded eighth for the provincials and lost a close battle (50-45) to Kitsilano in the opening round

The Devils closed out the tournament with a 55-52 triumph over Rutland.

Earlier, they captured the Delta championship, marking the second straight year going unbeaten in district play after winning the title in Grade 8.

They also placed second at their own invitational, falling to Kits in the final

The team was led throughout the year by Quinn Sjorberg, Brady Roberts and Damian Dumas The tireless efforts of Kaden Meyer and Charlie Rogers were prominent at the

defensive end of the floor The team also featured Ishaan Johal, Will Jollymore, Rylan Chima, Kyler Purbs, Luke Dunn, Luke Logan, Nathaniel Kolmel and Jax Jacobson

The boys were coached by Karsten Purbs and Andy Meyer.

The SDSS junior girls team concluded its fine season with an 11th place finish at the B C

Championships at the Langley Events Centre

In 1969 Deanna moved out west with her young family, settling in Ladner, followed by Tsawwassen in 1981, where she joined Beach Grove Golf Club and made many friendships that she cherished. Her interests included golf, lawn bowling, bridge and travel. Her love for travel took her to many places around the world, but her favourite place to visit was Newfoundland, where both of her parents were from.

Deanna was very social and easy to talk to, making her career in sales at a variety of organizations over the years a natural fit for her.

Her greatest source of joy was her family, and loved nothing more than spending time together with them. She took great pride in her hospitality and had a talent for decorating her home for every occasion.

The family is grateful for the care she received from her doctors, Dr. Wong and Dr. Chan, as well as the nurses, staff and volunteers at the Irene Thomas Hospice, who all provided her with compassionate care during her time there.

She taught us many lessons during her cancer journey. Her unwavering, joyful spirit and ability to always look on the bright side of life, even on her most difficult days, was inspiring and admired by all who had the blessing of knowing her.

Our cherished Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and friend to many will forever be in our hearts and will be greatly missed by the many people she touched in her life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Irene Thomas Hospice through the Delta Hospital Foundation are appreciated.

Stay where you’re to ’til I comes where you’re at.

LUST, Gail L.

September 10, 1942

March 3, 2023

It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gail Lust (nee Duke) on Friday, March 3, 2023.

Gail was a devoted wife, mom and nana who touched the lives of many with her kindness, generosity and unwavering love. Born and raised in Humboldt, Sask., to a close knit family of eleven, Gail became an accomplished figure skater and certified coach.

Gail cherished family above all else. She was a loving and supportive wife, a proud mom who was an active part of her children’s lives and a doting nana who adored (and spoiled) her grandsons.

Of course, we must mention her doggie O.P best friends for 14 years. We can only imagine how much fun they are having together now.

Gail dedicated her life to helping others while working at the Psychiatry Unit Burnaby Hospital. She had a passion for work and was well respected by her colleagues for her kind and compassionate nature.

The family is grateful for the care she received from all her doctors and supporting staff. A special thank you to oncologist Dr. Cheryl Ho for 10 years of compassionate care. You have our entire family’s gratitude and respect.

Gail is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard; children Tracy (Richard), Lorri (Lawson), and Craig (Christina); grandsons Cody (Georgia) and Chase; sisters Estelle, Muriel and Karen; and extended family.

Gail will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, kindness and dedication to family will live on in the memories of those she touched. A service will be held for family and friends on April 6, 2023, at Delta Funeral Home in Ladner B.C.
