SouthpointeAcademyplanningexpansion
Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen is planning a major expansion of its campus.
Delta council at its Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday heard an enthusiastic presentation from representatives for the private school on a proposal to add a new building at the facility at 1900-56th Street
The proposal is still in the pre-application phase with a formal application still to be submitted
The application is for a new six-storey building located behind the existing school, with both buildings connected by a second-storey walkway
The applicant needs a development variance permit to increase the permitted height from 30 feet to 110 feet to allow the construction of the six-storey structure
The property is currently zoned public use which permits educational facili-
ties up to a maximum of three-storeys, but a development variance permit was approved in 2015 to increase the permitted height to 71 feet for the existing fivestorey building.
The addition would include 26 new classrooms including science labs, art and music studios and a double-height gymnasium on the upper floors.
A fifth-floor terrace is also being considered to provide additional outdoor space for students
A report by the planning department also notes that the school currently has 540 students from kindergarten to Grade 12, 100 of them located in an off-campus space.
The school last year officially opened its Senior School Campus, located directly across 56th Street from the main campus. It has nearly 13,000 square feet of additional space.
The expansion would increase the school’s capacity to a total of 900 students.
There are several easements that
allow the sharing of parking spaces between the school and a church to the north
The property is adjacent to Grauer Park and a ditch that drains into a fish
bearing stream.
Delta staff note that prior to a formal application, the applicant needs to prepare detailed architectural and landscape plans and a traffic impact analysis.

Ten years after giving a Ladner man a life-changing gift, Carroll Meilleur wants everyone to know they too can take five minutes to potentially do the same.
Meilleur provided joy and relief to Gord Johnson and his young family when her kidney happened to be a match and the pair were wheeled into an operating room at Vancouver General Hospital on May 13, 2013
The highly-successful transplant culminated a six-year process that began when a cut on Johnson’s wrist got infected with strep and eventually led to his kidneys failing
He was told the typical wait for a transplant was 10 years, however, by year four, his wife Michelle went the unprecedented route of launching a social media campaign in search of an O blood-type donor The community rallied behind the family with the Facebook group “Are You an O” getting 700 members soon
after launching and it kept growing
Meilleur was a stranger who was urged to join the group by her longtime friend She didn’t hesitate to register as a B.C. Organ Donor after reading a post that talked about Johnson having the opportunity to coach his kids again
“I had played ball all of my life and my dad was my coach He had died six years prior (to learning about Johnson) and I couldn’t do anything about that. But in my mind, I could help Gord be there for his kids again They could have the relationship and memories with him that I had with my dad. That was something that was really cool to me, ” said Meilleur, a mother of two herself.
“I went for the initial blood work and everything then it was MRIs and CT scans. It was getting to be more and more invasive and I said at one point ‘when am I going to know this is going to be a match or not?’ and they’re like oh, yes, it’s a match”
“This was the first social
media transplant in Canada that we knew of,” added Michelle. “Carroll was already our hero for getting tested I remember telling her you don’t
have to do this. I couldn’t get my head wrapped around it”
The transplant was exactly 13 months after Meilleur was initially tested. Annual
check-ups in the 10 years since the procedure have shown Meilleur and Johnson to be completely healthy and living their lives to the fullest Doctors were amazed the two weren’t related since her kidney couldn’t have been a better match.
The families have since become good friends.
“It’s a gift and you feel very fortunate. I’m always thankful and grateful to Carroll for doing it I’m the lucky one that Carroll stepped up and put herself out there for a stranger I want to inspire other people through Carroll’s story that it’s okay for people to do it,” said Gord.
“You come across people who are in the same circumstance as me or facing the choice of a dialysis and you can tell them your story and give them hope and that’s because of Carroll”
“We won the most important lottery there is,” smiled Michelle

Planning and investment is going into mitigating flood risks in this province including in the Beach Grove area.
The provincial government has announced that communities throughout B.C. are better able to withstand floodwaters with the completion of 24 flood-mitigation, risk and hazard assessment projects as part of a joint B C -Canada funding program
The projects are valued at nearly $11 million and are part of the National Disaster Mitigation Program, which costshares expenses between the federal, provincial and
territorial governments
Projects were divided into four funding streams: risk assessments, flood mapping, mitigation planning and investment in nonstructural or small-scale structural mitigation.
As far as the City of Delta, $217,000 was provided for a Beach Grove seawall structural assessment and conceptual design for raising the wall
Gathering public feedback earlier this year, the city is considering proposed conceptual design solutions for the Beach Grove seawall
Having varying heights and construction standards, the seawalls in the Boundary Bay Village area are privately owned.
Most of the seawall in Beach Grove is under a right-of-way, constructed under the Fraser River Flood Protection Program, and is Delta’s responsibility
Several sections were constructed as early as 1969 and 1972 Various repairs have also been completed, but the Beach Grove neighbourhood remains prone to multiple flood-related hazards The city says with recent updates to the provincial guidelines, the existing seawall does not meet the current requirements to provide safe protection against flooding due to the wall height, wave overtopping protection and seismic requirements.

The Delta School Board on April 25 approved the district’s operating budget for 2023/24, which has few significant cuts while aiming to move away from a reliance on using reserves.
Trustee Joe Muego said it has taken creativity to produce a budget that has the least impact, but pressures remain.
Trustee Nick Kanakos described it as a good budget, saying several challenges had to be faced including funding labour settlements, higher benefit costs, higher illness costs, technology replacements, inflationary costs and the lingering costs of the COVID19 pandemic.
He said major cuts were avoided, trying to address concerns raised, but addressing them all is never possible
He added the province this year has implemented a three-year budgeting process aimed at helping to improve financial planning
During the last three years, Delta has seen a reduction in its reserves, due in part to the pandemic, but they should not be used for ongoing programs, he said.
The budget focused on decreasing program areas that have had limited impact on students, while also mitigating risk and ensuring longterm sustainability by reducing the reliance on reserve funds.
The district will also direct operational sav-
ings elsewhere including covering increasing illness costs that had not been budgeted, also with the aim to rely less on reserve funding to cover those costs
Following a public input meeting on the proposed budget on April 18, the school district made one adjustment by adding a second peer support coordinator for teachers, on a one-year basis, with funding coming from reserves.
Noting it was the first district operating budget for the new school board members, other trustees following their vote commended staff for the complex task undertaken, adding it’s important to note that each dollar decision affects individuals.

Residents on a Ladner Street continue to let their feelings be known to the City of Delta about a plan to implement cycling improvements on their roadway.
Having gathered a survey and submitted a petition in opposition, one 44th Avenue homeowner said they don’t agree with the elimination of on-street parking on the south side of their street.
Noting safety is also a concern, the resident in a letter to council and the engineering department, said the avenue is a major thoroughfare with
large volumes of traffic and excessive speeds.
Part of the city’s new overall Cycling Master Plan, the 44th Avenue project was presented a year ago with an open house and feedback gathered, but faced opposition when it came to the parking issue
The proposed cycling improvements along 44th Avenue between Arthur Drive and 57th Street included marked buffered on-street cycle lanes, a defined parking lane along the north side of 44th Avenue and removal of the on-street parking along the south side of the avenue to accommodate the new
cycle lane.
According to the engineering department, the cycling improvements would tie into existing cycle lanes along Arthur Drive and result in a continuous cycling facility on 44th Avenue from Ladner Elementary to the Dugald Morrison Park Engineering director Steven Lan told the Optimist the latest round of public consultation, which wrapped up April 21, was based on another version of the design, which had been circulated to residents for comment. Staff will be reporting back to council with the feedback received.

Delta council last week gave final rezoning approval for a new townhouse complex in Ladner.
The application for 4829 48th Ave. will see the construction of a sixunit townhouse development comprising two three-storey buildings, with each dwelling having three bedrooms.
Three of the townhouse units would front directly onto 48 Avenue and the other three will be accessed via an internal driveway
The site previously contained the historic
Wilson Residence, which was demolished by the owner in late 2019.
Two years earlier, the Heritage Advisory Commission reluctantly gave the green light for the owner to demolish the structure, provided a number of conditions were met including advertising the building for sale for the sum of one dollar
The owner, Amman Dhaliwal, purchased the rental home from a relative a couple of years prior and informed the commission the house had extensive deterioration
A third-party assessment also concluded the
house could not be reasonably rehabilitated.
The commission elected not to impose a temporary 60-day freeze, but expressed concern how the property had not been maintained, nor had there been any consideration to preserving the heritage structure
The Wilson Residence, which was on Delta’s Urban Heritage Inventory, was constructed in 1904 for Herbert Lyman and Susan Alice Wilson, who lived there until Lyman’s death in 1942.
The house has had a variety of renters and owners since that time.

OPINION
Resisting change
Change is inevitable. It might be hard sometimes to accept that, but that is reality
I have lived in Delta since 2015, working at the Optimist since 2016, and have come to the conclusion that many people in our fine community are resistant to change
The change that I’m referring to of course is development changes.
We have seen the past few months, a community divided when it comes to several development proposals – namely the six-storey development proposed for the current site of Dunbar Lumber in Ladner Village The proposal has passed third reading, so once the final conditions are met by the developer, the application will receive fourth and final adoption by council
This is a much-needed development in Ladner Village. It will revitalize a tired area, bring needed business and more tax dollars to the community and more business support. The Chamber of Commerce fully supports this project.
There are two other proposals – one on Ladner Trunk and one in the Holly Park area – that have been given a preliminary look at council’s committee of the whole. We have reported on both Both projects were deadpanned on our Facebook page with comments like we don’t need any more development, our community is being ruined and council is clueless
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but in case you haven’t figured things out yet, the Lower Mainland is in a major housing crisis and the provincial government is asking, no check that, demanding that municipalities start fast tracking development proposals and increasing various housing stocks in their communities.
If you think that Delta is going to be immune to this by just pulling up the draw bridge and putting out a no vacancy sign
think again. Remember, the province’s Housing Minister is Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon, so that means housing and development will be happening in Delta whether you like it or not. Do you honestly think that nothing will happen here under Kahlon’s watch?
Change is inevitable Whether you like it or not, change and development is going to happen.
-Ian Jacques
This could be a hockey playoff talked about for years
As a long-suffering Vancouver Canucks fan, I’ve been getting used to ignoring hockey on TV this time of year It’s been more than a decade since the Canucks put on a run for the Stanley Cup, and even a few years since they have been in the playoffs.
But something is happening this playoff season that might change the shape of the discussion of hockey in this country for years Something so groundbreaking that we may never hear the end of it The Toronto Maple Leafs have made it past the first round.
God help us if they actually win the Stanley Cup The Tragically Hip wrote a song about Toronto winning the Cup, 50 Mission Cap Look up the lyrics, interesting story Who will write one if they win this time, The Weeknd?
As you can tell, I’m not a
Leafs fan I kind of cheer for the Montreal Canadians, only because Tsawwassen local Brendan Gallagher is on the team Once he leaves, forget it.
The Edmonton Oilers also made it past the first round, and good for them. Edmonton is looked down upon by many players, a team they don’t want to play for because it is tough living in Edmonton in the winter versus, say, Tampa Bay or
Phoenix
I guess I’ve always had that west coast attitude about Toronto – they think they are the centre of the universe, Vancouver has so much more to offer, what’s the big deal about Toronto? But people in Toronto have a different perspective – Vancouver is about the size of one of its municipalities, and a long way away There’s so much more opportunity there because there are so many more people there
Regardless, it still doesn’t make you ‘Canada’s Team’ . You can have that for baseball and basketball, but not hockey
It’s a longshot, but Gary Bettman’s nightmare might come true – an all-Canadian final, Oilers vs Leafs. No US television revenue, but Canada’s epic conflict of west vs east
Especially if Toronto winswe will never hear the end of it Que the music

Whether its big corporations like Facebook or political parties like the BC Liberals, someone in the PR department believes that we, the people, are complete morons.
They believe that if they change their name we will completely forget about their previous actions and policies. I’m currently not looking for employment, but if I was, I would suggest that the politicians of our great province gather together to create one large faction and name themselves the Party of Hypocrisy. Not only does it have a nice ring to it, it’s also the only
ounce of truth we might obtain from one of these bureaucrats who claim to be working on ‘ our ’ behalf.
Take our ex-premier
John Horgan for instance
Here is a man who for years shoveled his Green agenda down our throats, insisting that the BC Carbon tax was for our benefit and it was simply the cost to live in such a beautiful province while being respectful to the government. But when a Coal Mining company from the Kootneys wrote him a cheque he couldn’t refuse to become a board member Where was our great environmental protector?
The same goes for our
tone deaf Mayor George Harvie who takes every chance he can to reassure Delta residents that he hears us, he’s listening to what we have to say, except when a large number of residents disagree with the Ladner Village six-story proposal
When that happens he instead resorts to name calling and bashing the current state of the Village This is a man who during a cost of living crisis decided to give himself and his cronies a pay raise close to $20,000 What’s next? Will he be providing advice to Delta residents struggling to pay their bills, which properties to invest in?

Minister’s missing in action on RBT2
Editor:
Missing when the RBT2 announcement was made April 20 were two key cabinet ministers most associated and responsible for this development.
Where was
Environment Minister Guilbeault? Where was Minister Qualtrough the MP for Delta?
You might expect the
minister whose decision it is and the minister in whose riding the project will be built to be at the announcement and both to have made statements on the day of the announcement.
Instead the announcement was made by the Minister of Natural Resources. Unless the plan is to drill for oil on the RBT2
man-made island this project has nothing to do with Minister Wilkinson
Nothing has been heard from the Environment Minister Minister Qualtrough is said to be (conveniently) out of the country and other than a brief statement in the Optimist on April 26 has been silent

Roundabout rules are not simple
Editor:
Re: Traffic roundabout: rules are simple (letters, April 27)
Following the above entry and the one last week it is blatantly clear that drivers in general don’t know how to navigate roundabouts or traffic circles correctly.
Phillip Hubbard’s letter
confirmed that by saying “rules are simple.”
There are conflicting and incomplete ‘rules’ put out by ICBC, BC MVA, Canada MVA and the City of Vancouver Mostly they are merely ‘guidelines’
I’ve just spent time looking at the different sources of info and there
is no definitive, complete set of rules, although they are there.
I doubt if one per cent of drivers have bothered looking for how to correctly navigate roundabouts (about six different varieties), so everyone is just winging it Rules are not simple.

B.C Premier David Eby and Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation Josie Osborne were in Delta last Thursday (April 27) to make a big announcement about having more commercial vehicles carbon emission-free
They were at Seaspan Ferries-Tilbury announcing that three CleanBC programs are receiving new funding for industry: the Commercial Vehicle Pilots (CVP) program, the Commercial Vehicle Innovation Challenge and support for medium-and heavy-duty vehicle charging infrastructure
Seaspan Ferries Corporation has received support to acquire fast-charging stations and two large-battery electric vehicles to move heavy cargo. The Seaspan project is one of 20 that shared $17.3 million under the CleanBC Go Electric CVP program to support buying electric vehicles, including hydrogenfuel-cell vehicles and charging ports
The CVP program has a budget of $89 million over seven years, which includes $40 million from Budget 2023.
Eby said this province is leading the country when it comes to people switching to zero-emission vehicles.
Electric Vehicles (EVs) made up 18 per cent of all light-duty passenger vehicles sales in B.C. last year. The number of registered light-duty EV’s rose from 5,000 in 2016 to more than 100,000 today, while B.C. has one of the largest public charging networks in Canada with more than 4,200 stations, compared to just 800 stations in 2016.
“But we know it can be more difficult for the commercial vehicle sector,
in particular, to make this switch The availability of zero-emission vehicles for commercial transportation is more limited, development costs are high. These are serious challenges…The commercial vehicle sector accounts for 22 per cent of our total carbon emissions here in British Columbia, and with the emerging medium and heavy-duty zero emission vehicle industry, we do not want B.C, to be left behind. In fact, we want to be able to maintain our leadership position.,” said Eby.
Osborne noted they are making great progress but there is much work to do, especially when it comes to commercial vehicles
Derek Ollmann, President, Seaspan Marine Transportation, said the marine supply chain needs to continue to decarbonize.
Under StrongerBC for the Commercial Vehicle Innovation Challenge, an additional $30 million will help address the technology gap in the hard-to-decarbonize commercial vehicle sector.

New track at Delta Secondary
SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist com
A pair of Delta sports field projects are first on the list for funding the city is receiving from the provincial government
Council on Monday agreed to establish a new reserve fund, called Growing Communities Reserve Fund, where a one-time grant of just over $16 million to Delta will go before its directed to local infrastructure projects
The city will first use that funding for a second artificial turf field at Mackie Park and a new track at Delta Secondary School, said Coun Dylan Kruger
The province last month provided $1 billion in grants to all 188 B.C. municipalities and regional districts for investments in community infrastructure and amenities.
The funding provided through the fund should be limited to one-off costs needed to build required infrastructure and amenities rather than funding ongoing or operational activities, a staff report notes
The funds are to be incremental to currently planned investments and should accelerate the delivery of capital projects
Funded projects must acknowledge the province’s contribution through temporary and permanent onsite signage

Delta North NDP MLA Ravi Kahlon is announcing provincial funding to support projects for building and upkeep of tourism infrastructure across B.C., including for the Barns To Beaches route
“Delta has many great bike paths and people from all over the Lower Mainland travel to our city to ride them,” said Kahlon. “I’m very proud to announce that our government is providing funding to the City of Delta from the Destination Development Fund to promote and maintain the Barns to Beaches route, which will likely extend all the way into North Delta in the coming years ”
The City of Delta received $150,000 for the Barns to Beaches bike path, a popular route that connects breweries and farms in Ladner to beaches and cafes in Tsawwassen
According to the province, this investment is a $30 million investment on top of the already $15 million allocated to over tourism infrastructure projects for 2023, to continue our government’s support for a strong, diverse tourism industry throughout B.C. This funding will help support a
more sustainable year-round tourism economy for B C that attracts people from all over the globe. The over 90 projects funded provincially are shovelready and will be able to hit the ground running thanks to this funding.

Tabitha thought she’d beaten cancer She had already been through a lot and was only in her thirties She’d undergone a hysterectomy She’d started a new life, in a new city
Then one day, on her way to work, she found herself in so much pain that she had to pull over Sitting alone in her car, she found herself shaking all over “I was afraid the cancer had come back,” she recalls Tabitha’s story has a happy ending, thanks to the timely care she received That is why I am asking you to donate to our wish list and help us strengthen women’s healthcare at the Delta Hospital Campus of Care
Tabitha was referred to Dr Roy Jackson, who reassured her that the pain was caused by scar tissue from her previous surgery and recommended a laparoscopy She chose to have her surgery at Delta Hospital after hearing that it was one of the best hospitals in the area
Tabitha was anxious as she had never been to the Delta Hospital Campus before She recalls, “As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by friendly staff who made me feel so comfortable Dr Jackson informed Tabitha that she may need further removal of scar tissue in the future to relieve pain if it returns With each surgery at the Delta Hospital campus, Tabitha’s experience has been exceptional She felt that the whole interdisciplinary team went over and above to make sure she was taken care of
Today, Tabitha is 41, married with three stepchildren and a grandbaby “I am so grateful to the team at Delta I am cancer free and loving life!”
Tabitha had peace of mind that comes with receiving the very best healthcare possible in a hospital close to home that she knows and trusts
How can you support women’s health in your community?
By making a gift to help Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation acquire sophisticated equipment for treatments that benefit women every day, such as resectoscopes to treat uterine bleeding without the need for a hysterectomy, and a mammatome for breast cancer surgery
“I believe Delta Hospital is at the forefront of providing women’s breast and gynecological healthcare,” says Tabitha’s gynecologist, Dr Jackson “Donor support is very much appreciated by the doctors and nurses at the hospital Most importantly, the ultimate winners are the patients who are able to receive excellent care, thanks to your efforts.”
Delta Hospital has the busiest surgical day program in Fraser Health, performing over 200 breast cancer surgeries and over 600 gynecological surgeries in 2022
By providing our medical teams with the very best equipment, you support healthcare excellence for everyone in our community – including the moms, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, spouses and friends in our lives Through your generosity, we will expand our resources to meet the needs of our growing community of 100,000 residents
Thank you for your ongoing support. From the entire team at the Delta Hospital Campus of Care, our very best wishes for a happy Spring
Sincerely,
Lisa Hoglund, CFRE Executive Director
PS Preventative care is vital for women of all ages With Mother’s Day near, remind the women in your life (and maybe yourself) to be screened for breast cancer and other conditions that affect women. In fact, many people in our city enjoy privileges in life Rather than feeling guilty about the privileges that we have, we can use our privileged position to serve others who may not have the same privileges. This is better for our community.
In the Book of Hebrews, the author writes about a Jewish man named Moses, who was a prominent leader in Israel’s history. “By faith Moses, when he
was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.” Moses was an adopted grandson of the king of Egypt He had lots of privileges as a prince! However, he chose to be mistreated with God’s people who were being oppressed at the time. He used his privilege to serve those who were not privileged. If you’ve been blessed with success or privilege, consider how you can use it to serve others and give voice to those who do not have a voice in our society. Steward your privilege.

Ladner Glee Club, Jazzagals perform this Sunday
The Sunday@3 concert series presents a collaborative performance featuring two local singing groups.
On May 8 at the Ladner United Church, the Ladner Glee Club will join forces with the Jazzagals to share a wonderful mix of choral favourites
The Glee Club started many years ago, meeting at Ladner United Church on Monday mornings Under the direction of Mavis Weston, they are a very special, caring group of women who love singing choral arrangements in two and three-part harmony
Their main focus has been entertaining at retirement and care facilities in South Delta but more recently, have been performing a little further afield.
The Jazzagals formed five years ago, by virtue of their shared love
of music and a strong desire to learn more about vocal jazz With artistic director Gayle Rutt at the helm, they’ve expanded their repertoire to include swing tunes, bossa nova stylings, a cappella music, inspiring ballads, pop music, and of course, innovative scatting
As their music continues to grow and deepen, so too do their friendships. With much more to still learn on the horizon, the Jazzagals feel their love of vocal jazz and the many blessings of friendship will be the ties that bind them together for years to come.
The two ensembles are delighted to once again perform for this special concert and are confident that all who attend will leave feeling inspired and uplifted by the music Thanks to Pat

Rotary Club of Tsawwassen helps ElderCollege provide lifelong learning
Rotary Club of Tsawwassen has donated $4,000 to ElderCollege Delta for the purchase of new tables to support the learning of more than 400 mature students
“We conducted a needs analysis with senior serving organizations in our community and learned how digital literacy, access to technology and reduction of isolation were key to aging well,” said Rotary Club president Blake Cowan “ElderCollege enriches the lives of seniors in our community and we are so pleased that our donation helps facilitate their valuable work”
Loraine Littlefield, vice-president from ElderCollege explained that they offer courses, which are tailored to meet the interests and needs of mature students
“We need a classroom that is as flexible due to the wide variety of our courses, ” added Eldercollege administrator Louise Latremouille.
“Just this month, course topics range from a field trip on local geology, updates on findings from the Hubble Space Telescope and a course on how to live in a digital society safely, including tips to prevent fraud and identity theft
“The new tables are easily portable and adjustable to allow for the variety of learning settings we use, including individualized learning, conferencing and group presentations, something the loaned tables we used previously just couldn’t accommodate.”
Laureen McCleery, a Tsawwassen Rotarian, was at Eldercollege for the donation announcement and also because she was attending a course on travel and will soon be taking a course on the new artificial intelligence tool Chat GPT.

Summer Camps Makethemostofthe summercampexperience
Summer camp season will soon be here, and throngs of children will board buses each morning or pack their parents’ cars full of essentials to survive a few weeks away from home.
Looking back, many adults who experienced summer camp have fond memories of their adventures - whether they all went according to plan or there were some hiccups along the way. Parents want their children to make their own summer camp memories. Even if the canoe capsizes or the cabin leaks during a summer thunderstorm, such experiences can build character and strengthen friendships
Families getting prepared for camp can follow these guidelines to ensure the experience is one kids won’t soon forget.
Consider children’s readiness
There’s no magic age when a child may be ready to go to camp, but generally kids who are ages seven or eight may be fine to start a resident sleepaway camp. Day camp kids can begin as early as age three, the same age kids often begin preschool programs. Gauge whether the child has spent time away from home at friends’ or family members’ homes to decide if a resident camp will be the right fit or if a day camp is more appropriate
Connect with fellow campers
If possible, attend a meet-andgreet prior to the start of the season. Neighborhood day camps tend to draw kids from local communities, so there’s already a chance kids will know a few fellow campers.
Families getting prepared for camp can follow these guidelines to ensure the experience is one kids won’t soon forget.
Get to know camp counsellors early on
Campers can introduce themselves to camp counselors and other program directors and are urged to ask questions about specific programs. Counsellors can direct campers toward activities they may enjoy.
Make the most of all situations
Much of summer camp will likely be smooth-sailing, but it’s reasonable to expect some bumps along the way Campers shouldn’t expect perfection, but use the situations that may go awry as learning experiences on how to handle adversity - trying to find the fun in them anyway Even a medical situation can be overcome, particularly because camps staff qualified medical personnel to ensure campers are safe and well
Summer camp can be a great experience, especially when families take some pre-camp measures aimed at ensuring kids have a fun season.

Summer Camps
Keep summer days fun and busy when camp ends
Many adults have fond memories of attending summer camp when they were children Summer camp program lengths vary. Some children attend local camps that may last a week or two, while others attend sleep-away camps that last a little longer. Since summer vacation typically lasts between eight to 10 weeks, parents may discover there still is plenty of downtime after summer camp ends.
Here are some ways to fill the gap between the end of camp and the start of a new school year
Schedule a vacation
What better way to keep the magic of summer going than by rolling summer camp right into a family vacation? Give kids time to enjoy a few days to relax at home, but then buckle up for the next adventure. This can be a trip away from home, or a series of day trips or activities guided by all members of the family.

activities, such as canoeing or nature hikes On nights when the weather cooperates, everyone can gather around a fire pit to roast marshmallows.
Enroll in a recreational program
Cities such as Delta offer free or low-fee activities to residents through their parks and recreation departments
If budgeting does not allow for a camp experience, there are likely town-wide activities that can fill the gaps until it’s time for children to go back to school. Some even may offer afterhours childcare options for parents who have scheduling conflicts with work. When summer

Mental Health Week
Whatseniorscandoto safeguardtheirmentalhealth
No one is immune to issues that can adversely affect their mental health, including men and women nearing retirement age and those who are already retired
Though the term ‘golden years ’ suggests life in retirement is one sunny day after another, many individuals 60 and older are dealing with mental health issues
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 15 percent of the world’s adults aged 60 and over suffer from a mental disorder.
What makes that statistic even more troubling is that the WHO acknowledges it likely doesn’t
paint the most accurate picture of seniors and mental health, as depression is often undiagnosed among older men and women and untreated because it co-occurs with other issues affecting seniors
Recognizing warning signs Mental health issues vary, and individuals with anxiety will likely experience different symptoms than those with depression.
* Noticeable changes in mood, energy level, or appetite
* Feeling flat or having trouble feeling positive emotions
* Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
* Difficulty concentrat-
ing, feeling restless, or on edge
* Increased worry or feeling stressed
* Anger, irritability, or aggressiveness
* Ongoing headaches, digestive issues, or pain
Seeking help As noted, a growing awareness of mental health issues and how they affect seniors has translated to more available resources for aging men and women who need help.
Individuals can visit the Canadian Mental Health Association at https://cmha ca/findhelp/find-cmha-inyour-area/ for contact information for various groups.

Mental Health Week Menandmentalhealth
Awareness of the importance of recognizing mental health issues has grown considerably in recent years. Prominent individuals from various industries have come forward to speak about their struggles, and that has done much to remove the stigma that was long associated with mental health
Though recognition of the importance of addressing mental health issues has increased in recent years, there’s still much to be done, particularly regarding men and mental health.
Recognition of the symptoms that suggest someone is experiencing mental health troubles could compel men to seek treatment or lead to their family members encouraging them to get help
It’s important for individuals to learn the symptoms of mental health issues Such recognition may compel individuals to seek help for their own issues or serve as warning signs to concerned friends and family members, potentially prompting them to
initiate discussions that can save a loved one ’ s life.
Here are some symptoms of mental health problems:
* Anger, irritability, or aggressiveness
* Noticeable changes in mood, energy level, or appetite
* Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
* Difficulty concentrating, feeling restless, or on edge
* Increased worry or feeling stressed
* Misuse of alcohol and/or drugs
* Sadness or hopelessness
* Suicidal thoughts
* Feeling flat or having trouble feeling positive emotions
* Engaging in high-risk activities
* Aches, headaches, and/or digestive problems without a clear cause
* Obsessive thinking or compulsive behavior
* Thoughts or behaviors that interfere with work, family, or social life
* Unusual thinking or behaviors that concern other people

A Ladner blueliner will be in B.C. colours at the Aboriginal Nationals in Winnipeg
Oliver Melnychuk is taking his promising career to the 2023 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC).
The Grade 11 Delta Secondary student of Musqueam descent earned one of 20 spots on the Team B.C roster after being among 70 hopefuls to attend a threeday selection camp back in late March in Kamloops
The male and female NAHC tournaments were established 20 years ago by the Aboriginal Sport Circle and are sanctioned by Hockey Canada.
They boast the greatest collection of young First Nation, Inuit and Metis hockey players in the country, while fostering cultural unity and pride.
Past participants include current NHL players Ethan Bear (Vancouver Canucks), Brandon Montour (Florida Panthers) and Zach Whitecloud (Vegas Golden Knights); and national senior
women’s team members Jocelyne Larocque, Brigette Lacquette and Jennifer Rattray. The championships run from May 7 to 13 with both B.C. teams earning bronze medals a year ago
A 6-foot-2 defenceman, Melnychuk came through South Delta Minor Hockey before spending a season with the Vancouver Thunder development program where he suited up for the U15 and U18 teams
He then took a significant step by cracking the roster of the Aldergrove Kodiaks last summer and being among just a handful of 16 year-olds to play in the Pacific Junior Hockey League Lining up against older opponents on a regular basis enhanced his physical play and game speed too, from footwork to his decision making
It paved the way for his Team B.C. breakthrough after taking his first crack at making the final roster a year earlier in Chilliwack. He is also eligible to play in the 2024 tournament.
“It definitely helped and made the second camp a lot easier for me, ” said Melnychuk, who grew spending many Tuesday nights at
the Ladner Leisure Centre watching the Delta Ice Hawks. “There was just so much more hitting and it’s a case of also gaining confidence as the season went on. ”
With the Kodiaks practic-
ing four times a week in the afternoon, Melnychuk is appreciative of his flexible course schedule at DSS that has allowed him to stay at his hometown school.
The Team B.C. commit-
ment has resulted in a change of baseball plans for the multi-sport standout He is back with the U18 AA Ladner Red Sox this spring after playing at the AAA level with the Richmond Chuckers.
