Cityexpandingdrinkinginparksprogram

Residents and visitors will now be able to enjoy alcoholic beverages in 21 parks

You will be able to enjoy a cold beer or other alcoholic beverage at more Delta parks, and now year-round

Council on Monday gave the thumbs-up to a staff recommendation to expand the number of parks that can have designated areas for public consumption of alcohol

Now, 21 park sites will allow drinking.

The pilot program began two years ago, running from June 1 through Sept. 30, at Diefenbaker Park, Memorial Park and North Delta Community Park, from 11 a.m.to dusk, seven days a week.

Staff noted the program was generally well received by the community and had few complaints

The biggest issue was waste left on the ground, a problem rectified in large part with the addition of more garbage and recycling receptacles.

A staff report notes that expanding the program yearround, and to additional park locations in each community, will further enhance residents’

enjoyment at the selected parks

“Staff contacted the City of Port Coquitlam and the City of North Vancouver to inquire about the status of their programs. Both cities expanded their pilot programs to yearround with minimal concerns. Staff also reached out to the Delta Police Department and bylaws for comment on expanding Delta’s program to year-round and to the additional locations Neither expressed concerns with expanding the program to year-round,” the report notes

“Staff will conduct a detailed analysis at the end of 2023 to assess the impacts of the proposed expanded program, with consideration for further expansion to neighbourhood parks, or to adapt the program to address any issues that arise.”

The additional sites include Delview, Annieville, Sunbury, Sunstone, Mackie, Chalmers, Gunderson, Westview, Wade, John Oliver, Holly, Hawthorne, Ladner Harbour, Dugald Morrison, Cromie, Brandrith, Winskill, and Pebble Hill parks

The majority of the proposed locations have on-site amenities, while liquor won’t be per-

mitted in playgrounds, splash parks, sport fields and sport courts, parking lots, as well as areas of dense vegetation

City manager Sean McGill told council, Sunstone is the only park without a washroom,

but it is a site mostly used by the surrounding homes. After a review, portable washrooms may be added if needed, or the site may even be removed from the list

Coun Dylan Kruger, who

had put forward the motion to expand the program, said it will give those who don’t have yards and their own greenspace an opportunity to also enjoy the outdoors with their friends

BC Human Rights Commissioner releases early data results

The BC Human Rights Commissioner (BCOHRC) has released the early responses to a survey indicating poverty and housing are among the top concerns for service and rightsrelated organizations in the province.

In a news release, the Commissioner notes that of the more than 400 organizations that have responded to a “baseline” survey, so far, over a fifth cited either housing or shelter (12 per cent) or adequate income or poverty (eight per cent) as one of the

top three human rights

concerns

The BCOHRC launched the survey earlier this month, which will close to comments on June 9. The responses are to help guide a multi-year effort to establish a baseline from which changes in the state of human rights in the province can be measured, the BCOHRC explained

When it comes to poverty in the City of Delta, much work is already being done.

Council recently submitted an application for $50,000 in funding to the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM)

Poverty Reduction and Action program to hire a part-time poverty reduction coordinator to address priority issues identified in Delta’s Social Action Plan.

The city two years ago received a grant of $25,000 for a first stream of the UBCM program to conduct a poverty needs assessment and develop a poverty reduction action plan

Delta’s Poverty Reduction Plan was presented to council in May 2022 and helped form the Delta Social Action Plan, which was recently endorsed by council.

It includes 20 actions to reduce poverty and

improve food security in the community

The poverty reduction coordinator will report to the city’s social planning manager, undertaking actions developed in consultation with the Delta Poverty Reduction Action group and Delta’s Community Voices Table

The city’s poverty reduction action initiatives are to include, among other things, development of a Delta Citizen’s Academy “that aims to build and elevate leadership skills and confidence of community members with experience of poverty to be more influential

change-makers in their community”

According to the Delta Poverty Reduction Action Plan report, while the city is a relatively affluent community, with a smaller proportion of low-income residents than that of Metro Vancouver, higher average annual household incomes, fewer homeless people and a lower crime rate, pockets of poverty do exist throughout the community

It impacts a disproportionate number of seniors, youth, immigrants, Indigenous residents and people with disabilities

In Delta, the highest rates of income inequality exist in Tsawwassen and rural Delta and the lowest rates in North Delta, although there are pockets of high inequality throughout the city, the report notes

As far as housing issues within Delta, core housing need appears to be greatest in North Delta, followed by Ladner and Tsawwassen

When broken down by type of housing, renters fare more poorly, where 30 per cent of Delta renters are spending more than 30 per cent of their income on shelter, and 11 per cent are spending more than 50 per cent

ClosureofVancouverLandfillinDeltainsight

It’s been steady progress on the eventual closure of the Vancouver Landfill in Delta.

According to a 2022 annual report on the landfill’s operations, released a few weeks ago by the City of Vancouver, which owns and operates the 72nd Avenue dump adjacent to Burns Bog, four hectares with an engineered cover system were closed in what’s known as Phase 4

To date, a total of 126.8 hectares have been closed, representing 73 per cent of the 173-hectare waste footprint

Since 2009, the Western 40 Hectares as well as Phases 1, 2, 3 and 4 have progressively closed, with the exception of the four hectares on the crest of Phase 4 North, which was deferred to last year.

The closure of Phase 4 North incurred cost of $10.2 million, the report notes.

In December 2022, a request for proposals was publicly posted for the design and construction supervision of

the Phase 5 closure, including Phase 5 South and Phase 5 North. The contract was awarded in March 2023.

In 1999, the City of Vancouver, which is responsible to cover the closure costs, Metro Vancouver and Delta entered into a new long-term agreement whereby the operational life was extended to 2037.

Garbage would be permitted to be piled higher on the existing footprint and in 2037 the site is to be transferred to Delta.

The landfill is currently authorized to accept up to 750,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste for disposal each year.

Materials used beneficially, such as for cover, road building and closure, are not counted towards that annual discharge limit.

In 2022, a combined total of 734,486 tonnes of waste were disposed at the landfill, of which 1,045 tonnes were outof-region municipal solid waste

The annual report notes that, as per the 1999 agreement, the waste capacity of the landfill was estimated at 20 million tonnes as of Oct. 1, 1997.

The remaining capacity as of Dec. 31,

2022 was 5,716,355 tonnes

While work by Vancouver has been well underway on the site’s eventual closure, an end-use plan must also be developed that meets with Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy’s approval

A consultant was retained in 2021 to assist Vancouver and Delta to develop suitable options, supported by stakeholder engagement and technical feasibility analysis as a first step.

Submitted in early 2023 were several reports detailing the technical assessment of 35 possible options for an end use, including preliminary costs

As far as what the end of the landfill will mean for the City of Delta’s bottom line, landfill royalties will become a thing of the past.

According to the city’s most recent financial plan, Delta received $4,080,853 in landfill royalties in 2022, down from $4,137,168 the previous year.

Deltaformulatingnewagricultureplan

SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta has lost acreage in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) over the past decade but is still doing better than other communities when it

comes to retaining farming

That’s according to a draft of the Delta Agricultural Plan update, which has been in the works for over a couple of years and recently reviewed by the Agricultural Advisory

Committee. A final draft still having to come to the committee for endorsement and city council for approval, as well as requiring an implementation strategy, the plan aims to identify current issues for Delta’s agriculture industry and

recommend actions for the municipality to strengthen the long-term viability of farming in the community

The draft report notes that much has changed on the agricultural scene since the first plan was approved back in 2011

when it comes to the agriculture and food sector, as well as provincial and federal policies and regulations In Delta, there’s been changes to the agricultural land base and fluctuations in crops and livestock grown and raised locally.

The report notes that Delta has approximately 22,240 acres (9,000) hectares of land in the ALR, corresponding to 50 per cent of its total land base, while approximately 75 per cent of the ALR land in Delta is actively used for farming.

In 2002, Delta had 23,295 acres (9,427 hectares) in the ALR, but that number slipped to 22,235 acres (8,998) hectares by 2021.

Changes to the agricultural land base can be attributed to the construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (Highway 17) and the allocation of ALR lands to Tsawwassen First Nation as part of the treaty negotiations, which came into effect in 2009, the report explains

“Despite these changes, Delta has been very successful in retaining ALR land over the past 20 years (1997-2016) in comparison to other municipalities within Metro Vancouver according to study recently completed by Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Data for the project was analyzed from six municipalities in Metro Vancouver - Delta, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Richmond, Surrey and the Township of Langley. In all six municipalities during that period, there were approximately 422 approved applications for non-farm use or subdivision, with 67 (16%) of

those successful applications in Delta,” the report notes

“Of the successful applications in Delta, 49 were for non-farm use and 18 for subdivision. Many hectares had been removed in Delta for the construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road but, compared to the other communities in the study, Delta has been the most successful in retaining ALR land and retaining farm use over the past 20 years ”

The report also notes that the numbers are also reflected in data published in the Census of Agriculture, which indicates that the size of the farms in Delta has remained consistent over the last 10 years with around 50 per cent of the farms between 10-to-69 acres in size.

As of 2016, there were 330 parcels in the ALR less than five acres, representing 43 per cent of all parcels in the ALR in Delta, pointing to few subdivisions occurring or being approved by the city or the Agricultural Land Commission.

Large parcels in the ALR in Delta allows for economies of scale and increased farm viability for a variety of agricultural activities, the report adds

Meanwhile, the number of actively farmed parcels dropped from 518 parcels in 2002 to 482 parcels in 2016, but the average parcel size increased

The report also notes there has been an increase in blueberry, cranberry, and potato production by area, more production of forage, and an increase in fields in pasture.

DeltacouncillorpartoftransitlobbygroupinOttawa

Delta Coun Dylan Kruger was part of a delegation of municipal officials from across Metro Vancouver who travelled to Ottawa to lobby for enhanced federal transit funding.

“Metro Vancouver is growing We need sustainable, predictable, long-term funding to accommodate our growing population and get our region moving,” said Kruger “It’s important that Delta continues to advocate for increased transit services, including Bus Rapid Transit on Scott Road [North Delta] and enhanced express bus routes in Ladner and Tsawwassen.

“I appreciated the opportunity to discuss

local and regional priorities with members of Parliament, including the need for transit improvements along major corridors and employment centres here in Delta”

The TransLink Mayors’ Council met with federal officials from May 15 to 17 to share information about Access for Everyone, the new 10-year plan for expanding public transit across Metro Vancouver to reduce congestion and keep the region moving.

The $21-billion plan –also known as Transport 2050: Ten-Year Priorities – will take a “busfirst” approach, doubling local bus service, building approximately 170 km of rapid transit, and improving infrastructure for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians

The trip to Ottawa marks the beginning of its campaign to raise awareness about the

urgent need for investment in transit and transportation, and how the Access for Everyone plan

will bring transit closer to more affordable parts of the region and lower greenhouse gas emissions by reducing traffic congestion

“We want the voices of our residents to be heard in Ottawa and Victoria. Metro Vancouver’s population is growing fast, and essential services like public transit are not keeping up, ” said Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West, chair of the TransLink Mayors’ Council. “Just like other core utilities that keep our region going – electricity, water, roads – public transit is key to our quality of life in Metro Vancouver, and we urgently need to expand transit services as we add more people to the region.”

The Mayors’ Council

is asking for the federal Permanent Transit Fund (announced in 2021) to be started earlier than planned, in 2024, to enable TransLink and other transit agencies in Canada to begin delivering better transit service without delay

The Mayors’ Council also wants to see the Government of Canada launch a tri-partite national commission together with provinces, transit agencies and local governments to develop a new funding model for public transit that is more resilient and equitable by avoiding overreliance on regressive funding sources such as transit fares and property taxes, and will enable Canada’s big cities to plan and build the new transit current and future residents need to succeed

OPINION

Realestate nightmares

To say we were left frustrated is putting it quite mildly as my wife and I were keeping our fingers crossed that we were close to buying a new house.

Well, the home we had our eye on in North Delta, near the Scottdale Centre mall, is an older one, a boxy unit that was the norm 50 years ago.

Recent open houses (we attended both days) saw a steady stream of other house hunters, so we knew we would likely have to go over asking price and face stiff competition.

So, we did, going tens of thousands over in the hope we stood a chance We didn’t.

Our realtor informed us by phone last week that we would have to “ go at least $100,000 more to be in the ballpark” Others, also loving the location, were willing to do so for the house that had multiple offers. Our bid was only in the middle of the pack

We balked, not considering the little box, as charming as it was, anywhere worth it. Our realtor agreed

Only a couple of days later, the owner, having purchased the property for substantially less than the asking price a year prior, chose not accept any of the offers, instead relisting the house for well over $200,000 more

Unfortunately, that’s just one of the pitfalls house hunters in the region face as the market is seeing prices creep upward with limited inventory.

According to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver’s report on market activity in April 2023, listing activity remained below historical norms, however, home sales in Metro Vancouver have started mounting a surprising comeback

It’s a similar story from the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVRB), which said despite persistent inventory shortfalls, housing sales remained steady

Low inventories helped nudge prices upward and members were starting to see a rise in multiple offers on properties as the spring market kicked in, the FVRB noted.

As far as our house search, we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and keep looking

Emergency in the emergency

Emergency wards in our provinces biggest hospitals are in crisis and that is scary

Some doctors say the situation is so bad they have been forced to go public.

It began with an open letter from exasperated doctors at Surrey Memorial who warn staff shortages have patients waiting in hallways, not receiving timely care, and are at risk of dying.

Since then dozens more Fraser Health care professionals have spoken out The public are also sharing their horror stories about the lack of care in emergency rooms

It’s hard to digest, because historically it doesn’t jive with what we have come to expect from our emergency departments.

We live in a rich western society where ambulances arrive when we are in crisis. Paramedics stabilize us and transport us to hospital, and

we believe that when we arrive someone will be there to attend to us

It’s alarming if that trajectory can longer be counted on, especially for the most vulnerable in society, like children and the elderly.

I am extremely grateful that our local hospital can treat emergency patients when they need it. At least that has been my experience.

In the last six months family members have vis-

ited the Delta Hospital ER several times and they all received outstanding health care.

Yes there are waits, but the staff work hard to treat patients in a timely manner, and they provide excellent care.

I’m concerned the stories of overcrowded emergencies may prevent people from going to a hospital when they are in crisis

If you ever need emergency treatment please do not hesitate to call 911.

Our health care workers are there to deal with medical emergencies and none of them want you to stay away, no matter how stressed they are Voice your support for ER staff and all health care workers who have borne the brunt of the pandemic and now must deal with this current health care emergency.

In 2001, I lived in Ladner and was a very young woman making my way through undergrad at UBC. My mom had been battling breast cancer when we first moved to B C from Manitoba and I was fairly alone and isolated in those years

I was trying to land my first job as a journalist and volunteered at the Canadian Cancer Society to write about a local cancer drive.

As a volunteer, I met a woman named Wellner Gagnier. Sometimes we would go for coffee and she would cheer me on as I tried to find my feet.

Recently, I found an email she had written me in 2001, after I had been passed over for a job. She told me not to get discouraged and that like all professional writers “ one must adapt to rejections, sometimes many times over before acceptance.”

Now many miles away

in Toronto with two decades of work behind me, I understand how lucky I was to have her in my corner

While I no longer have her current email address, I see she still writes letters to the editor to the Optimist.

Wellner, if you’re reading this, please know you made a difference and your kind words still resonate with me all these 20-plus years later Thank you for caring.

Thankful for practical kindness

I am so grateful to live in a community where people care for strangers.

Four women especially gave of their time and compassion to help and support me when I fell off my e-bike, fracturing my wrist

Maria stopped her car immediately and offered to call 911 and drive me to the hospital

Susan spoke with 911 dispatch when I fainted, trying to speed up their response time

Blanka brought me blankets and stored my bike for me

Joanne gave me her hoodie and stayed by my side until I left for the hospital

And an off duty nurse, whose name I didn’t get, gave us the practical advice to turn and rest with my head lower than my feet which greatly helped my blood pressure.

Many others offered help as they came by, but my team had things under control.

When the ambulance still had not arrived after over an hour, Blanka walked to the fire hall to get help The fire department, once

My COVID positive husband drove me to the hospital when 1 hour and 40 minutes after the first 911 call when dispatch could still not say when the ambulance would arrive

Again, my heartfelt thanks to Maria, Susan, Blanka, and Joanne, as well as to the Delta firefighters, and Delta Hospital emergency department staff, and others who offered to help me in my time of need

What a wonderful May Days weekend

A Ladner mom, who penned a children’s book on her daughter’s rare genetic condition, is bringing more awareness right in her hometown

On Sunday, June 11 The Walk For the CAWS (Canadian Association for Williams Syndrome) will take place at Memorial Park, starting at 10:30 a m

Walk participants will receive a T-shirt, barbecue lunch and will be able to participate in the games for kids, raffle, and 50/50 draw. All ages welcome with pre-registration ongoing by visiting www canadahelps org/en/ charities/879205516RR0001the-canadian-association-forwilliams-syndrome/events/ walk-for-the-caws-delta.

It was a year ago when Amy Miller released Life with Williams Syndrome: An Introduction to Williams Syndrome for kids as a fundraiser for CAWS.

Olivia, who turns four next month, is missing around 26 genes on one copy of her 7th chromosome. It is characterized by medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning challenges These often occur side-by-side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities, and an affinity for music

Olivia was using a walker until just before Christmas when she began taking steps on her own, a huge achievement and a thrill to her parents. Meanwhile, since her book release, Amy is now a member

of the CAWS national board of directors Her involvement prompted to do something close to home.

“Our plan is to live in Delta for the foreseeable future. I want the community to know about Olivia’s condition because it is so rare in order to accept her, be able to support her, and protect her,” explained Amy. “Part of the syndrome is that she lacks the “stranger danger” filter and views everyone as a friend My biggest fear is that she will be taken advantage of when she gets olderthat and bullying, I’m terrified of her being made fun of or hurt because she’s different. I think the more that people know about her syndrome and risks / limitations, the more that she will be accepted and protected.”

Delta officers members of Cops for Cancer 2023 team

IAN JACQUES

Two Delta Police officers are among the riders for this year ’ s Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley and Tour de Coast.

Constables Cody Fenske and Ryan Hooseman were among the 65 law enforcement, first responders and guest riders from across the Lower Mainland who were introduced at a kick-off event at the Vancouver Police Department.

The riders will now begin training and fundraising ahead of the 24th annual cycling tours set to take place Sept. 15 to 22 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society

A partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and emergency services personnel, Tour de Valley & Tour de Coast Teams will raise funds for lifesaving childhood cancer research and Camp Goodtimes

“I am participating in Cops for Cancer for which local police officers and emergency services personnel will ride 800km to support children and families living with cancer and beyond,” said Fenske on his fundraising page. “Every donation takes us one step further to pedal our way to end childhood cancer. Because one child with cancer is one child too many ”

Hooseman said he is blessed to be

given the opportunity to participate in such an incredible cause.

“Every one of us has been impacted by cancer in some form or the other and because of my own relationships involving this awful sickness I was very passionate in being a part of Cops For Cancer,” he said. “I am grateful to everyone who donates, and if you cannot donate, then wish me luck because 800 km is quite a lot.”

Both Delta officers will be holding fundraising events in the coming months, the details of which will be released soon. To learn more about Cops for Cancer or to donate, visit copsforcancer.ca.

Eastlinkcustomersinan uproaroverlossofchannels

ijacques@delta-optimist

Eastlink customers are expressing their frustrations over a loss of many of their popular channels.

Last week Eastlink sent out and email to customers in Delta stating that as of June 27, they would no longer be carrying Corus TV channels, which includes HGTV, W Network and Showcase

Residents posted their anger at the loss of these services to local Facebook groups and the Optimist newsroom received several angry emails questioning the decision and the lack of answers from the company

The Optimist reached out to Eastlink for com-

ment and received a statement via email on Friday morning.

“We worked very hard to reach an agreement with Corus that would not impact the availability of these channels,” said Eastlink CEO Jeff Gillham.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to reach such an agreement, which means we have to remove these channels from our lineup as of June 27”

Gillham said the company recognizes that this is disappointing for some customers and will impact customers in different ways, depending on their viewing preferences and packages.

“We are working closely with our customers and making every

effort to ensure their individual needs are supported in a way that is meaningful to them,” he added “Customers will continue to receive the same number of channels with comparable programming like Super Channel Heart and Home for example (which carries movies and other programs similar to W Network) as well as channels like Cottage Life, Discovery Channel, Smithsonian, FX, Family and many others

Customers also have the flexibility to customize their channel lineup with TV Channel Exchange and will have access to new TV package options and other supportive offers.”

Community Shrinerssettohostannual salmonbarbecue

This Sunday, June 4 marks the 52nd year the Tsawwassen Shrine Club is holding its annual salmon barbecue at Harbour Park in Ladner.

“This event serves a number of purposes for our community,” said club president Hugh Johnson. “It provides an opportunity for people to become aware of our philanthropy, Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, while raising funds to support donations to causes such as purchasing equipment and mobility aids for children in the community whose families may otherwise be unable to afford the equipment, as well as funding the transportation expenses and treatment costs of patients receiving treatment at Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. All patients of Shriner’s Hospitals receive treatment regardless of the family’s

ability to pay.

“It also allows everyone to enjoy a delicious meal of charcoal barbequed Pacific Wild Salmon while socializing with their neighbors, family and friends new and old.”

Johnson said not all of those who participate in the event are Shriners

“We receive help from many community volunteers and I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all these volunteers, many who help us year after year, for their selfless assistance and dedication to our cause, ” he said. “We could not put on an event of this type without them. I also want to thank Lions Gate Fisheries for sourcing our salmon again this year ”

Sunday’s barbecue runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. -Submitted

The program offers a safe and special place where siblings are provided education on neurodiversity and skill building where they can share similar experiences with children who understand.

Fortis for Families also provides new funding for a designated Reach Behaviour Consultant to Indigenous Communities to address potential cultural barriers, which can limit access to critical services and supports. This program also provides planning and inperson support for children with extra needs and their families in partnership with Tsawwassen First Nation.

“Fortis BC has a particular focus on building local resilience in the Delta community and their support to Reach Indigenous and SibShops programs will assist in building resilience in the children and families that the nonprofit organization serves, ” said Joanne Hunton-Sehdev from Fortis “I recently had an opportunity to see the amazing

services Reach provides, and recognize their services are crucial to many families. Building strong and inclusive communities is a value Fortis shares with Reach I am so humbled to continue our support of them.”

Associate executive director and program manager Camille Netherton adds that Reach staff are grateful for the funding.

“When families in our community are able to direct our service in to areas that are not traditionally funded, we are truly able to meet their needs in significant and meaningful ways, ” she said -Submitted by REACH

LIFESTYLES

SidekickPlayerspresentsMousetrap

The Sidekick Players Club is pleased to bring an iconic mystery to the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

Directed by Carroll Lefebvre, a stellar cast will bring Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap to the stage from June 8 to 24.

The Mousetrap opened in London’s West End in 1952 and ran continuously until March 16, 2020, when the stage performances had to be temporarily discontinued during the COVID19 pandemic

A whodunit, the play has a twist ending, which the audience are traditionally asked not to reveal after leaving the theatre.

Molly (Tiffany Rose Oud) and Giles Ralston (Jeffrey Nordstrom) have opened a guesthouse, Monkswell Manor during a blizzard. As the guests arrive, they soon hear that a gruesome murder has occurred the day before and everyone is suspect. As each guest arrives, the plot thickens until Sgt Trotter (Adrian Pryce) arrives to find the murderer and he knows it’s one of them.

The guest list is a bevy of real characters, Mr. Paravicini

(Paul Fisher), a strange man who wears rouge and lipstick and has a strange accent Miss Casewell (Lisa Somerville), a no-nonsense woman who has little time for trivial things Mrs Boyle (Carol Jones), a retired woman who is not pleasant at all and seems to have a chip on her shoulder. Christopher Wren (Morgan Schooley), a young man who finds humour in everything, including murder. Major Metcalfe (Mark East) a kindly gent who’s happy to be in a warm, comfortable house during the blizzard

Once they all arrive, they can’t leave because of the blizzard outside It has made all highways and roads impassable for everyone. And with all the interrogation by Sgt Trotter, paranoia runs rampant, and everyone is a suspect.

Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. with two Sunday matinees June 11 and 18 at 2 p m

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors. To reserve tickets, call 604-288-2415

As an older adult, engaging in physical activity is one of the most important gifts we can give ourselves.

The benefits of physical activity are undisputed. It can prevent or delay many health challenges, and plays an important role in our well-being and quality of life It can improve our balance, reduce the risk of falls and injuries, help us stay independent longer, and prevent osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some cancers, and premature death

Most people know the importance of staying active, yet don’t always follow through. It is helpful to break your activity down into manageable steps, start slowly, and listen to your body. A gym membership is not required; many daily activities like pushing a lawn mower, walking up stairs instead of taking the elevator, carrying your grandchild, or taking a walk can all strengthen your muscles and build stamina.

One of the easiest ways to maintain an active routine is to commit to a group activity Not only does interacting with others break social isolation and loneli-

ness, risk factors for dementia, it helps make you accountable for attendance.

The KinVillage Community Centre has several classes and activities that will keep you moving in a fun social setting, including fitness and stretch, chair and regular yoga, ball fitness, Pilates, adaptive fitness, functional fitness, line dance, Dancercise, and Jazzercise. There is something for every level of fitness

Along with physical activity, there are other important factors for aging well such as incorporating fibre rich foods into your diet, exercising your brain as well as your body, and staying socially connected.

Seniors Week is the perfect time for anyone over 50 to try a class or activity at the KinVillage Community Centre (see their ad in this edition) From an ice cream social and brain teasing trivia, to fitness classes, lunch specials at the café, fabulous finds at the Unique Boutique, and a fun beach themed lunch with live music, you are welcome to join in the fun What are you waiting for? A balanced diet and exercise, which includes a combination of aerobic activities and strength training, is necessary to maintain long-term health.

Adults ages 65 and older should aim for the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderateintensity activity, such as brisk walking, and at least two days of activities that strengthen muscles

When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors can follow these safety guidelines as they embark on their strengthtraining journeys

Speak with a healthcare provider first: Get the green light to proceed with an exercise regimen before begin-

ning by having a discussion with your general practitioner about your fitness goals. Your doctor

can recommend strategies that are safe and point out any exercises that may compromise

your overall health. Master basic exercises first: Anyone new to strength training, which

is sometimes known as resistance training, can start out slowly, even using just body weight, to provide resistance Resistance exercises can include squats, crunches, modified pushups, planks, and lunges.

Graduate to resistance bands: When you ’ re ready to move on to something else, consider resistance bands as an alternative to free weights. The bands can help you develop good form before introducing weight. Good form is key to avoiding injury.

Work with a trainer: Working with a certified personal trainer can help you learn how to use free weights and strengthtraining machines cor-

rectly. A trainer also can create a routine that includes the right number of sets and repetitions to gradually build and maintain muscle mass. If you decide against hiring a trainer, gym staff members may guide you through equipment and demonstrate proper form

Exercise with a friend: Strength training with a friend or family member can provide motivation and keep you on target to meet your goals

Strength exercises are a vital part of maintaining health as a senior Such exercises help maintain muscle mass and also improve balance and bone health.

The benefits of spending time in the great outdoors are significant.

Spending time outdoors may improve mental health and help to reduce stress, and the vitamin D the body absorbs while outside can have a positive effect on blood cells and the immune system.

Seniors can benefit from the great outdoors as much as anyone. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which strengthens bones.

Spending time in the great outdoors also provides a social benefit, encouraging individuals from all walks of life, including seniors, to get out of their homes and spend time with other

people With so much to gain from spending time outside, seniors can consider these outdoor exercises as they seek to maintain or improve their overall health

Walking: Walking is free and effective. A brisk 30-minute walk can improve blood flow, contribute to a stronger heart, strengthen bones, and even help people sleep better at night.

Cycling: Riding a bike is both fun and a great form of outdoor exercise. Though many studies regarding the health effects of cycling have looked at the value of riding a bike to work, a scenario that does not apply to retirees, the results of such studies still offer insight into just

how valuable it can be to ride a bike. Seniors, whether they are still working or retired, can incorporate cycling into their daily routines and enjoy all the fun and health benefits that riding a bike provides.

Hiking: Hiking is a bit more strenuous than walking, particularly when individuals choose to traverse steep and/or rocky terrain. WebMD notes that hiking after age 60 can help people reduce their risk of falls and fractures; lower their risk for a host of ailments, including coronary heart disease, colon cancer and diabetes; reduce blood pressure, even in adults who have already been diagnosed with hypertension; and

Walking, cycling and hiking offer a great reason to get out of the house and reap the health-related benefits of spending time outside.

maintain healthy bones and joints. Hiking is not a one-size-fits-all activity, so seniors, especially those who would char-

acterize themselves as novice hikers, are urged to speak with their physicians prior to hiking trails that are not flat.

Seniors can consider these fun activities and others as they answer the call of the great outdoors

Travel was once a key component of the picture working professionals created of their ideal retirements.

While the COVID-19 pandemic put many retirement travel plans on hold in recent years, jetting off to distant locales is once again on retirees’ radars.

Eagerness to get back on the road, in the air or on the high seas could make it easy to overlook some principles of safe travel. However, such an oversight could lead to complications that could make it hard to enjoy time away from home.

The following tips can reduce the likelihood that seniors encounter trouble while travelling Determine if any

health issues are affecting your desired destinations: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a website devoted to travel vaccines (cdc gov/travel/ page/travel-vaccines), and that page can be an invaluable resource for individuals planning a vacation. What’s more, the CDC even provides a specific list of destinations and the latest travel health notices for each of those nations That list, accessible at cdc. gov/travel/destinations/ list can help seniors determine if there are any health-related safety issues in countries they hope to visit.

Speak to your physician: A pre-trip consultation with a physician can

uncover any issues that might arise while you ’ re away. Such issues may be easily managed for domestic travellers who are not planning to visit any especially remote locations, but they will not necessarily be as easily navigated when travelling overseas Physicians can recommend certain vaccinations or measures to ensure your health while away. In addition, a pre-trip doctor visit is a great time to refill prescriptions that you will need while you ’ re away. Take financial precautions as well: Of course, not all travelrelated concerns are medical. Finances also require some pre-trip attention Inflation has caused a sharp spike

in the price of various commodities since the start of 2022, so travellers should study up on the cost of food and attractions at their destination to ensure they have enough money to enjoy themselves. Baggage costs have risen significantly in recent years, so seniors travelling on a budget may want to pack less and do laundry while travelling in an effort to save money. In addition, the unpredictable nature of travel since the onset of the pandemic has underscored the utility of travel insurance. Seniors can look into travel insurance that could reimburse them in the case of delays or cancellations.

Privately share your itinerary: Prior to

take various measures to make their trips safer and more enjoyable.

departing, share your itinerary with friends and family. Avoid sharing the itinerary on social media platforms, which can make you a target for criminals at home and at your destination. The

itinerary should include where you ’ re staying, the dates you ’ re visiting certain locations and the dates of activities you’ll be engaging in on your trip

Howthebodychangeswithage

Aging is an inevitable component of life. Young children often cannot wait until they get older because of the freedoms that seemingly come with being more mature.

On the flip side, adults often wish they were young again. Time waits for no person, and with aging comes many changes, many of which manifest physically.

The following are some components of healthy aging that go beyond graying hair and wrinkling skin.

Bones, joints and muscles

According to the Mayo Clinic, with age bones may become thinner and more fragile. Joints will lose their flexibility, while muscles lose mass and strength, endurance and flexibility. These changes may be accompanied by a loss of stability that can result in balance issues or falls. It’s common for the body frame

to shrink, and a person may lose a few inches from his or her height. A doctor may suggest a bone-density test or supplementation with calcium and vitamin D to keep bones as strong as possible Physical activity that includes strength training can help keep muscles strong and flexible

Body fat

As muscle mass diminishes, body fat can increase The Merck Manual indicates that, by age 75, the percentage of body fat typically doubles compared with what it was during young adulthood. The distribution of fat also changes, which can adjust the shape of the torso.

Heart

Organs in the body also age, and cells begin to die off, making those organs work less efficiently The heart is one such organ that changes with age. It pumps more than 2.5 million

beats during one ’ s lifetime As a person gets older, blood vessels lose their elasticity, and the heart has to work harder to circulate blood throughout the body, reports Johnson Memorial Health Exercise can help keep the heart as strong as possible.

Urinary tract and kidneys

The kidneys become smaller as a person ages, which means they may not be able to filter urine as effectively Urinary incontinence may occur due to hormonal changes or because of an enlarged prostate Furthermore, the bladder may become less elastic, leading to an urge to urinate more frequently.

Memory and thinking

Older adults experience changes to the brain as they age. Minor effects on memory or thinking skills are common and not usually cause for worry. Staying mentally

Seniors Week Dating later in life

People are living longer, a reality that can be traced to a number of factors, including advancements in medicine and greater dissemination of information regarding preventive health care

As people live longer, some may outlive their significant others and ultimately find themselves once again interested in sharing experiences with a special someone.

Seniors ready to reenter the dating pool may find that things are quite different from what they experienced as teenagers or young adults. Dating used to be about hanging out with friends and meeting people at shared

events, such as school dances or work parties or even while enjoying a night out with friends. Nowadays, dating often begins in cyberspace

This can be confusing and anxiety-inducing for adults who didn’t grow up with technology guiding their every move.

Here’s what they may want to know before navigating twenty-first century dating waters.

You’re not in this alone: While online dating may be portrayed as a young person ’ s game, plenty of older adults are now finding connections online In fact, many different dating apps are geared toward the senior set, including SeniorMatch, eHarmony,

Singles50, OKCupid, and Silver Singles, among others

You have more time for fun: As a senior, you may have more time to devote to recreation and leisure. This can be a great opportunity to get out and meet someone who shares your passions and interests

Online dating has its advantages: While online dating apps and websites may have certain things working against them, particularly if their algorithms for pairing people are not fine-tuned, they also can be helpful Online dating can expand social circles beyond local neighborhoods or even states, provinces or countries.

You’re casting your net over a much larger body of water Furthermore, dating app profiles

Seniorsadvocaterecommends propertytaxdeferral

BC Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie is urging senior homeowners struggling with the rising costs of living and aging to consider deferring their 2023 property taxes.

The BC Property Tax Deferral Program allows homeowners 55-plus to defer all or some of their annual property taxes. The Province pays the tax to the local government on behalf of the senior homeowner and the deferred taxes are repaid to the Province when the home is sold

“Eight out of 10 seniors in B C are homeowners with modest or low incomes and are finding it very hard to keep up with rising costs Almost half of B.C. seniors live on an income that is less than minimum wage, ” said Mackenzie “Seniors who defer their property taxes can put as much as $500 per month back in their pocket to help pay for the costs of aging such as medications, mobility aids, personal care support and other activities of daily living which are vital for people as they get older.”

In the Monitoring Seniors Services 2022 Report, the Office of the Seniors Advocate found that homeowners deferred a total of $307 million in property taxes in 2021/22 - 61,394 were renewals and 6,989 were new users

“I recognize property tax deferral is not a financial panacea for many senior homeowners, however, it can bring meaningful cost relief to some, depending on where they live. I encourage seniors facing financial difficulties to consider using this valuable government program, ” said Mackenzie. “My

office is actively working with the province to look at relieving the housing cost burdens for seniors by both significant relief for renters and expanding the Provincial Tax Deferral Program Hopefully, the government will offer more relief for both senior renters and homeowners in future years, but this program is available now and can bring relief to some struggling seniors.”

The best time for homeowners to apply to defer property taxes is after they receive their tax notice but before the taxes are due in order to avoid any potential late penalties from the local government.

Age-friendly grants benefit B.C. seniors

Communities in British Columbia can now apply for funding aimed at helping seniors’ lead independent, active lives

“As people in B.C. age, our government has a responsibility to make sure seniors’ age with dignity and respect, and that includes having communities that are age-friendly,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health “I encourage local governments and Indigenous community leaders to apply for a grant that will lead to meaningful improvements locally for seniors”

By 2031, nearly one-quarter of the province’s population will be age 65 or older The Age-friendly BC program is facilitating independent living and community engagement among seniors by providing financial support to local governments and Indigenous communities.

In 2022, 25 communities received age-friendly grants across both streams Of the successful communities, 13

were rural and remote, five were new to receiving age-friendly funding and four were Indigenous communities. Age-friendly projects that receive funding range from tailored housing, transportation, wellness, climate and emergency-management strategies and plans for seniors, to inclusive programs, public communications and outdoor spaces, such as parks and nature trails that ensure accessibility and safety for seniors.

The Age-friendly BC program is a partnership between the provincial government and BCHC, a provincewide not-for-profit organization that facilitates the ongoing development of healthy, thriving and resilient communities.

THE reason Paul

The power of gathering

Seeing our community enjoy May Days at Memorial Park over the weekend reminded me of a universal truth: we were made to share life in community.

Numerous gatherings like the May Days celebrations, birthday parties, weddings, memorial services, reunions, family dinners, and even the casual hangouts with friends all attest to the fact that we thrive as human beings when we gather together regularly.

Navigating through the pandemic taught us that gatherings cannot be taken for granted

When forced into isolation, we lose the ability to achieve human flourishing. In fact, the bible states that the first time God said something wasn’t good was when Adam lived in isolation. Then he created Eve and

Minister’s Minute

created the first human family (community) In other words, we were optimized to live in community We function optimally when we share life around a meal and journey together through life’s victories and challenges.

A Harvard study on human happiness found that the greatest indicator of happiness in a per-

son ’ s life was the quality of relationships (community) that a person had. In the bible, God calls us to take gathering with brothers and sisters in Christ seriously: “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near ” (Heb 10:24ff).

If the goal of our community is “to stir up one another to love and good works,” we cannot do so by neglecting to gather I encourage you to gather regularly as a community and encourage one another in Christ. Isolation is a threat to human flourishing, and regularly meeting together in love and encouragement is life-giving

The Pacers entered the 16-team event

looking to better last year ’ s ninth-place finish and they wasted little time in doing so with round-robin wins over Vancouver schools Eric Hamber and David Thompson, along with Langley’s Walnut Grove, to capture their pool group and secure a quarterfinal berth Eric Hamber was the defending provincial champions

A Friday morning win over Oak Bay set-up an epic final four tilt with Heritage Woods. Delta played catch-up for much of the match before finally taking the lead in the late going and pulled out a 11-9 win.

It was then about a two-hour break before hitting the sweltering field turf surface for the third time that day.

The Vikings took advantage of a slow DSS start to jump out to an early 5-1 lead.

The Pacers fought their way back to make things interesting, twice pulling within two points, but each time Burnaby North used its methodical and well-executed passing scheme to extend the advantage

Coached by parent volunteer and former national level player Dave Jones, the Pacers roster featured Turner Anderson, Aylssa Aulik, Peyton Brown, Casey Cartlidge, Quincy Chong, Amorey Cronmiller, Paige Day, Evangelos Falcos, Ryley Ferguson, Aimee Havertstock, Tyler Jones, Harrison Last, Sophia Lawton, Saiya Mann, Abby Mischke, Nabeel-Aahmed Moledina, Morgan Omstead, Paisley Reid, Josh Robie, Joanna Rybaltowicz, Rylan Semler, Kaida Tarumoto and Spencer Wong The teachersponsor was Kayla Jow.

South Delta Sun Devils

Grade 12 standout Myah

Cressy is taking her volleyball career to Kamloops.

The 6-foot-1 middle blocker has committed to Thompson Rivers University as part of the 2023/24 recruiting class.

Cressy had a leading role in South Delta finishing second at the 2021 provincial AAAA championships and third this past December in Kelowna She was a first team all-star on both occasions.

“Myah moves with ease and with her size and how well she moves she’s a great athlete,” said WolfPack interim head coach Behlul Yavasgel. “When she came out to our practice she was very successful She jumps, lands and moves fast

and is a natural athlete. The moment she stepped on the court with the team it felt like there was instant chemistry.”

Cressy has spent extended time with the powerhouse Coquitlam-based Ducks Volleyball Club and with Team BC that included training at TRU and getting to know the campus.

“I have spent a lot of time in the Kamloops area and I have always loved it,” she said. “Through Team BC I have stayed at TRU before and I knew it was somewhere I would love to go. I connected with the other girls really well and I could tell that the team culture is great, the coaching staff have an amazing reputation and are well-liked by the players. I think TRU will feel like home for myself because of the players, coaches and

campus. ”

She looks forward to the challenge of playing in the CanWest and helping the WolfPack contend in the highly-competitive conference

“I am a very positive player and one of my strengths is definitely being able to connect with all my teammates on and off the court,” she said. “I am a fast and well-rounded middle and I hope to make an impact on the WolfPack through my net play and positivity.”

The TRU recruiting class also includes Abby Mohrbutter (Saskatchewan) and Keira Gent (Calgary)

“I think Myah will be a big force for us in the years to come, she’s a great teammate and will make our squad physically stronger but will also add to our culture,” added Yavasgel.

A couple of productive days at South Surrey Athletic Park have earned a pair of provincial berths for South Delta Sun Devils boys rugby teams

The Sun Devils seniors cruised past Fleetwood Park last Thursday to finish third in the South Fraser AAA Championships and secure their spot at this week’s B.C. Secondary Schools AAA Championships

Slowed by some key injuries down the stretch, South Delta dropped its semifinal game against Lord Tweedsmuir the previous week, before rebounding against Fleetwood.

Meanwhile, South Delta defeated rival Earl Marriott for the second time this season 15-10, to be crowned South Fraser Junior Boys champions

It was three weeks ago when the Sun

Devils handed the Mariners their first regular season loss and they followed it up with another clutch performance to earn the banner. They are also in Abbotsford this week to contend for the provincial title.
