FormerDeltacitymanagerreflectsonarewardingcareer
SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist com
There have been many changes in his 30-plus years working for the City of Delta, but it remains the best place to live in the Lower Mainland.
That’s what former city manager Sean McGill had to say about his lengthy tenure for the city where he was born and raised, recently retiring from his role as Delta’s top staffer.
His last day as city manager was on Aug 31.
He said that before he decides on a potential future career path, he very much looks forward to unwinding and having family time with his wife Erin and daughters Keya and Taylin.
“After 35 years, you don’t realize you’re in it because it’s so busy, so constant and it’s so ingrained as part of your life. After 35 years, it’s time to slow down and look after me and my
family,” said McGill.
Appointed city manager in 2019, McGill’s journey up the ranks was a remarkable one. His first job with the city came over three decades ago, teaching summer Tiny Tots soccer for the parks and recreation department while still in high school.
He worked his way up through several departments, having worked jobs as diverse as a labourer installing sewer
pipes to taxation manager and financial analyst His last job prior to becoming city manager was director of corporate services
“It blows my mind that it’s been 35 years already, it really does,” remarked McGill.
He also managed to earn a couple of degrees along the way, while being a life-long resident helped give him even greater insight into life in the city
“It’s been an amaz-
ing career, a good career that’s been very rewarding and it went incredibly fast Every new job was a new opportunity, an exciting opportunity, and it was an opportunity to make things better,” he added.
“The thing about the city, we’re still small in some ways with a small feel, but we ’ ve had a lot of big city issues and problems, like the port coming in and, of course, traffic issues and
housing issues There’s been challenges, and it did change. I still think it’s not only one of the best places to live in the world, it is certainly in the Lower Mainland. We’re very fortunate to be where we are and I was very fortunate to be a part of it”
McGill said Delta has a great sense of community and quality of life
When he took over as city manager, it was noted that McGill had focused on building strong relationships with his colleagues and creating a positive working environment, and that his history of success at all levels of the organization provided a unique perspective into the challenges facing Delta.
His skill at building relationships extended beyond the city to connections with outside agencies and other stakeholders.
Mayor George Harvie, who had been the city’s previous long-time city
manager, commented, “Sean McGill has been a tireless advocate for the City of Delta for the past 35 years and on behalf of council, I want to thank him and share my heartfelt appreciation to Sean for his service to our city. I wish him the very best with wherever the next chapter takes him.”
The City of Delta recently announced that Donny van Dyk has been appointed as the new city manager Beginning his Delta tenure Sept. 18, van Dyk for the past five years was city manager for the City of Penticton.
In a news release, van Dyk said he is thrilled to be working alongside council and looks forward to building on Delta’s reputation as a first-class community that is welcoming, inclusive and innovative.
He will be responsible for the overall management of the operations of the City of Delta, overseeing a $300-plus million budget.

The Hwy. 17A overpass, that was crippled from a big truck collision in July, will be rehabilitated next year at a cost of $1 4 million
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has approved the final design for repairs for the overpass that crosses Hwy. 99.
The structure was damaged when a big truck, southbound on Hwy 99, smashed into the underside of the overpass on July 18
As a result, the southbound lanes on the 17A overpass were closed for several days, requiring long detours for residential and business traffic to Ladner and Tsawwassen.
However, two-way traffic resumed on the overpass on Aug. 1.
According to the ministry, plans are underway for traffic management and construction staging for the repairs.
Work is expected to begin in November and wrap up by next summer.
Commuters will be told of changes to traffic patterns via DriveBC, social media and roadside signage.
Two of the five girders of the overpass, built in 1959, will need significant repairs.
During 2022, and up until June 14 of this year, 19 commercial trucks have crashed into highway overpasses, most of those in the Lower Mainland.
The ministry has indicated that higher fines, steeper penalties, longer suspensions, and more driver education will be brought “in the coming months.”

People possessing illegal street drugs can no longer hang around playgrounds, spray or wading pools or skate parks
As of Monday, those areas have been added to school grounds and licensed day cares as places where drug decriminalization doesn’t apply
The Minister of Mental Health and Addictions made the announcement Thursday, explaining that Health Canada made the change to the drug decriminalization policy, following B C’s request
As of Monday, possessing illegal drugs within 15 metres of those facilities is banned. In May 2022, the federal government OK’d a request from B.C. to not enforce the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, for adults, 18 and over, found with up to 2.5 grams of certain illegal drugs for personal use
The above decriminalization is for a trial period from Jan 31, this year, to Jan. 30, 2026.
Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord said the announcement will help police protect children in public places from exposure to illicit drugs.
But decriminaliza-
tion is just one part of “ a whole-system approach” needed to address the toxic drug overdose crisis, he added “Decriminalization alone will not achieve this, but must be concurrent to safe supply, rehabilitation, treatment, and other supports,” Dubord said.
The change will allow police to enforce the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act if people are found with illegal drugs in these child-focused spaces Intoxication remains illegal in all public places.
Delta Coun Dylan Kruger was happy with the change “I’m pleased to see senior government listening to calls from Mayor Harvie and other mayors across the region to ban the possession of drugs on local play-
grounds,” said Kruger.
“This is a step in the right direction. It’s just common sense that our parks should be safe spaces for children, not hubs for drug use
“Now it’s time for senior government to step up and provide real supports to individuals struggling with drug addiction and mental illness, ” Kruger said.
Fatal overdose numbers continue to climb.
In B.C. this year, at least 1,455 people have died from an overdose from an illegal and unregulated drug This is a rate of 46.2 people per 100,000 residents Last year was a record rate of 44.8, while in 2013, the rate was 7 2

104.3 The Breeze Radio Host Simone Grewal was the gala emcee.
Two family caregivers gave heartfelt testimonials on their experience with their spouse ’ s journey with dementia and the life changing impact of the Day Program for Older Adults at KinVillage
The stories underscored the importance of accessible aged
care services located close to home without having to drive to the neighbouring town for day programs.
The 7 Over 70 Awards recipients received a standing ovation in recognition of their significant contributions
to enhancing quality of life in their communities
The award recipients included: Dr. Jack Taunton, Carlene
Lewall, Peter Guichon, Avis Glaze, Bruno Marti, Leslie Abramson and Bill Wilms.
Delta South MLA Ian Paton led the live auction, where spirited bidding took place over exclusive items such as a cruise and a lunch at the BC Legislature with three political pundits

“Older adults continue to make a real significant contribution as they are living longer, healthier lives with decades of years, not just to other older adults, but to the whole community,” said Dan Levitt, CEO KinVillage.
“There are awards that recognize younger people but not that many that honour older adults for the work they do after 70.”

OPINION
Cheersto Harvest Festival
Editor’sNote IAN JACQUES
‘What a weekend.’
‘This is the best thing to ever happen to Delta.’
‘Can’t wait for next year ’
There are just a few of the many comments that I have heard and seen on social media following the amazingly successful inaugural Barnside Harvest Festival held this past weekend at Paterson Park in Ladner
I’ll have to admit that when media coordinator John Donnelly first contacted me a few months ago about this first-time festival, I was a little skeptical that they would be able to pull off such a big event
Well they proved me wrong big time, didn’t they?
When I walked on to the festival grounds for the first time on Friday night with Optimist photographer Jim Kinnear, I was truly impressed.
The set-up was top-notch with the three stages, many food and drink vendors, the artisan market and just the festival grounds itself It was impressive
Following a wonderful traditional welcome from Tsawwassen First Nation councillor and former Chief Bryce Williams, we were treated to an awesome opening performance from Tsawwassen’s own Warren Dean Flandez
Warren concluded his electric set with the local Top Line Vocal Collective and you could tell that after this performance, we were all in for an incredible weekend of music, food, drink and fun
As I was leaving the festival grounds a few hours later, Friday night, the festival site was packed. I saw nothing but smiles and a great sense of community spirit and pride.
This theme continued throughout the weekend.
So cheers to Barnside Brewing Co , all the many volunteers, security, grounds people and Delta Police for creating a truly unique festival experience that we can proudly call made in Delta.
Mark your calendars for Sept 13 to 15, 2024 for the next installment. I can’t wait for round two!
Watch your Halloween candy
My yearly rant. The “Halloconomy” is already churning away In fact, grocery stores have begun building their end aisle and entrance displays and this will only intensify over the coming weeks
The Halloween season officially starts the day after Labour Day when chips, liquorice and multitudes of chocolate treats are carefully positioned to garner our attention
The displays are deftly marketed with phrases such as “back to school fun treats” and are often described as legitimate snacks There are usually sale price tags accompanying these displays which encourage multiple purchasing events leading up to the big spook
Who hasn’t bought a bag of Oh Henry bars with good intentions to save as Halloween stock only to devour the bag while watching Netflix on a September weekend?
Halloween is a fun time
Community Comment
MIKE SCHNEIDER
for kids and binging pounds of candy in one day (3.4 pounds per person in the United States) is not going to hurt anyone It is the over exposure to the “fun treats” and eating habits that is the longer-term danger Canadians spent $486 million on Halloween candy last year and this amount will increase dramatically in 2023
Obesity rates amongst children in Canada have nearly tripled over the past 30 years Currently, one in seven children are obese in Canada
and they will likely carry that with them to adulthood along with the physical and mental problems that come along with it.
Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and emotional trauma related to bullying are all part and parcel for obese youth in Canada.
Following the Canada Food Guide as much as possible is difficult in an inflationary-environment, but families need to be as diligent as possible to steer their kids in the right direction.
There is a certain sad irony in that the beginning of candy season coincides with the fall harvest of BC Fresh fruits and vegetables.
Margins on candy are gigantic and profit seeking retailers and wholesalers realize they can squeeze us a months’ extra coin by starting their merchandising in September
Would retailers consider starting Halloween candy sales on Oct. 1? Is that too much to ask?

It’sthe19thanniversaryof TsawwassenBeachaccess
Editor:
Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023 is the 19th anniversary of the official opening of the Fred Gingell Park stairs, and public access to Tsawwassen Beach
It is hard to believe that it has been around long enough to be a fixture in Tsawwassen
The beach trail is one of the most popular and used public amenities in all of Delta, giving a great route down to one of the most beautiful western beaches in Canada
It has varied and regular users from the community including grandparents with young grandchildren, high school and elementary students, adults of all ages making it integral to their fitness and health, even professional athletes working on team training.
It is interesting now to think back and remember the opposition and bitter
controversy that surrounded gaining this access, and this resource, and how it divided the community for a time Happily, that is now just a memory for some, while most users today are not even aware that it was a very big deal.
Politics is always temporary, community prevails.
We encourage everyone to get out on the trail and celebrate the 19th anniversary; build up a sweat, go for a walk on the beach, and never take for granted that you can do this freely.
For those who work to enhance and help progress in the community, please use the Fred Gingell Park beach stairs as a marker and encouragement to be patient, be persistent, and never give up

A true angel among us
Editor:
My wife and I would like to thank the person who stopped to assist our injured child near South Park Elementary in Tsawwassen.
On Saturday, our children were riding their bikes on Gilchrest Drive near the school
Our child lost control of their bike and ended up using their face to
stop themselves To whomever immediately stopped their bike and apparently let their bike hit the ground to help, we really appreciate you Without you, our child would have felt alone and scared more then they were.
We did call for medical help when they got home. They are okay. No fractures, serious inju-
ries You are our Angel! We would love to get in touch with you and personally thank you. We will provide our phone number to the editor and they have permission to release it to you.
God bless you and your family. You are the epitome of what a town is all about.
Thank you.

Much has been said about the responsibility of motorists to watch out for bicyclists.
I would like to draw attention to the irresponsible cyclists who refuse to take the safety of their lives into their own hands, like the brainless ‘ person ’ on Bridge Street on a recent Friday.
his hands not on the handlebars, but clasped behind his head. There were vehicles parked on either side of the road and oncoming traffic.
If I had not braked, I would have hit him and it is he who would be injured (or worse), not myself.
We try to instil in our children the rules to keep them safe and someone like this is allowed to roam free. He should not be out without a keeper I suggest that he reads the road rules concerning cyclists in B.C.

He seemed to think that the road rules do not apply to him because he was riding on the wrong side of the road, no helmet and not only were

Overpasses are not needed, we do need roundabouts
Editor:
Re: Vehicle overpass is needed at this intersection (Optimist, letters, Sept 14)
We don’t need overpasses, we need roundabouts.
There is lots of evidence the roundabouts prevent collisions and are a lot cheaper to build than overpasses.
If they put roundabouts along Highway 1 all across the prairies,
people would be a lot safer And roundabouts would work well in Ladner as well Best thing about them is that unlike intersections, traffic keeps moving

Ladner Trunk condo, rental apartment development off to public hearing
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist com
Delta council on Monday (Sept 11) agreed to send a proposed 211unit residential development along Ladner Trunk Road to a public hearing.
Requiring an Official Community Plan amendment, the application would see the consolidation of several properties at 53 Street and Ladner Trunk Road to build a rental apartment building comprising 87 units and a market condo building with 124 dwelling units.
Two older, singledetached houses at 5349 and 5267 Ladner Trunk Road, would be demolished while the rest of the site will be vacant The current zoning of the site is single-detached residential
The proposed development would consist of a two-storey building podium and two L-shaped four-storey residential buildings above for a total of six storeys. The podium would consist of one level of parking and two separate building entry lobbies on 53 Street and Ladner Trunk Road at groundlevel and a half-storey of internally located parking wrapped by exterior facing residential units on
the second level.
The development would also include 12,443-square-feet of common outdoor amenity space consisting of a children’s play area, open lawn, covered patio, sitting and dining areas, as well as a two-storey, 3,600-squarefoot common indoor amenity building.
The applicant is also proposing to acquire an existing dedicated lane that runs through the properties from Ladner Trunk Road to 53 Street to incorporate into the development site area. The lane was originally dedicated as road in 1927 at the time of the original subdivision
As far as traffic impacts, a planning department report notes that a traffic study has been provided by the applicant.
The assessment notes that the development “would be well served by transit” along Ladner Trunk Road, while a second driveway access was added to the proposal by the applicant in response to public concerns about the potential increase in traffic on 53 Street.
A traffic analysis indicated that all study area intersections and movements are currently
operating within acceptable levels during peak hour periods and that the proposed development would generate approximately 80, two-way vehicle trips during the peak hour periods
That translates to an average of approximately four additional vehicles on the road network every three minutes, the report notes, adding that a future traffic operations analysis indicated that all study area intersections and movements are anticipated to operate within acceptable parameters, therefore, no intersection improvements are required.
The owner of the property to the east of the proposal, Persona Communications Inc., also known as Eastlink, through its legal team sent a letter to the city indicating the company “strongly opposes ” the application “because of the significant negative impact” including, among other concerns, a reduction in visibility of its place of business to traffic and customers along Ladner Trunk Road and loss of use of the laneway by Eastlink, its suppliers and customers.
The public hearing is scheduled for Sept 25

SANDOR GYARMATI

The province is about to move into the next step in the process of building a new eightlane immersed tunnel to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel in Delta.
Providing an update to Delta council in a presentation at last Tuesday’s (Sept. 12) Committee of the Whole meeting, Donald Trapp, Executive Director of Project Management for Transportation Investment Corp (TI Corp.), gave the latest on the Fraser River Tunnel Project, including the status of the environmental assessment, stakeholder engagement and project timeline.
Trapp noted about 40 baseline studies have been completed for the environmental assessment which, among other things, will help identify opportunities for mitigation, while a readiness decision is expected soon. That will lead into the next phase, process planning, which will include a 30-day public comment period led by the Environment Assessment Office (EAO).
Noting they’ve been actively engaged with
stakeholders in Delta, including a meeting with Delta’s Agricultural and Hunting Advisory Committee later this month, Trapp said they’re also near the first phase of the procurement process
A request for qualifications was launched earlier this summer and submissions are being received this month.
Trapp described the project as “ a progressive design-build model” that will go out for request for proposals in mid-October of this year for a designearly works agreement from a shortlist of qualified teams That request for proposals is scheduled to be awarded in the spring of 2024.
The awarding of a separate design-build request for proposals is scheduled for 2025.
Mayor George Harvie and Coun. Dylan Kruger during the presentation reiterated the need for a second exit out of Ladner be included as part of the project.
Representatives with the Ministry of Transportation and Highways in an earlier presentation noted it would be contingent on the province receiving sufficient funding from
the federal government Trapp told council that TI Corp. is delivering the current approved scope of the project, but the ministry continues to advance for a second exit
Kruger responded, “I do feel there’s been a real expectation established in our community where, on the one hand, we ’ re being told we need to approve a lot of new housing We’re one of 10 communities that have been put on the list to have mandatory housing targets, and yet not being given the required infrastructure money in order to support this new housing This second exit is critical, not just for the current state of traffic in Ladner and South Delta, but for our projected future growth”
Wondering if any studies or preliminary designs have been made for a second overpass from River Road, Harvie said he will be going to Ottawa in his role as Delta’s mayor and chair of Metro Vancouver to advocate, adding he hopes the province’s transportation minister will also be part of the delegation
Harvie said there is an “urgent need” to include safe, active transportation.

‘SecretGarden’receives OrderofBoundaryBay
On Labour Day weekend, the community of Boundary Bay came together to honour Juvy and Brian Whitehouse for their labour of love, The Secret Garden of Boundary Bay.
At the ceremony outside the garden entrance, the pair were presented with a certificate, a print by the Eldercollege class of the Secret Garden, two Boundary Bay T-shirts and a wonderful driftwood and succulent sculptural award. James Warkentin, one of the organizers of the award, had this to say:
“We are here to honour two people who have created the unique garden experience in Boundary Bay that is known to many as the ‘Secret Garden,’” said James Warkentin, one of the organizers of the award. “This remarkable garden is the result of years of inspiration and perspiration by Brian and Juvy, this years recipients of the Order of Boundary Bay.”
The Secret Garden magic begins as you enter under the living arbor. You’re lead along curving paths, past pocket garden scenes, and sweeping border plantings The exotic and the familiar vie for your heartstrings.
This garden is also a love of labour, requiring muscle, and backs of steel to create and maintain this joy.
Plants are donated or bought through the donations from people visiting. The city built a fence so the garden could be locked up at night as there was some vandalism and plants go missing, however problems are few and far between
Brian and Juvy recounted how bus loads of seniors and others come to visit and friends bring visiting rela-
tives and other friends from around the world. They are always happy to read the comments left by all- even children.
Neighbours congratulated the Whitehouses and stayed to wander through and wonder at the magic we have in our own backyard.

Thanks to Delta’s Neighbourhood Small Grants for funding this celebration
A community gathering to celebrate the Children’s Garden at the corner of Whitcomb Place and Enderby Street in Beach Grove took place on Sunday, Sept. 10.
The canoe garden was started earlier in the summer by Beach Grove children as part of Simple + Sweet’s Nature-Based Learning Summer Camp
The founder of Sweet + Simple, Lyndsay Smith is a Beach Grove mother
and teacher. The garden was created with the intention of connecting children to nature and creating a hub to bring the community together in a nature- based way.
Sunday’s gathering was opened by Nathan Wilson, welcoming families to the traditional lands of the Tsawwassen and Musqueam people
Wilson drummed and shared words on the importance of commu-
nity and how it filled his heart to see this coming together
The Children’s Garden is now flourishing with native plants and pollinators and with the help of many Beach Grove mothers indeed became the hub of a celebration.
A chalk mandala created by a Beach Grove mother and daughter, was at the heart of Whitcomb and Enderby surrounded by stations offering nature-based activities, face painting, rock painting, story studio, puppets and storybooks.
Delta Naturalists Society joined in on the fun with nature games, natural materials to touch and feel and a wealth of nature information Everyone was welcome and there were popsicles for all!
Smith is hoping to bring community together around the Children’s Garden seasonally, not just once a year Thank you to Delta’s Neighbourhood Small Grants for funding this celebration

(Matthew 4:19)
I will begin my column this month by admitting that I am not a particularly good fisher, but thanks to the plentiful pink salmon run this year, even an angler of my modest abilities can catch a fish!
Jesus’s first two disciples, Peter and Andrew, were fishermen When Jesus called them to follow, he invited them on a fishing expedition the likes of which they never could have imagined.
Notice carefully the words that Jesus chose. He told these two men that they will be “fishing” for people, not “catching.”
Minister’s Minute
There is a huge difference I have seen fishers with even the best equipment and excellent casting and reeling technique walk away empty handed Even for professionals, like
Sacred
Peter and Andrew, there was never a guarantee of a catch. While many came to follow Jesus during his earthly ministry, there were those who mocked, ridiculed and rejected him and his message. Such is also the case today.
The good news of Jesus Christ and his coming kingdom will not be received by many perhaps even most who hear it, but that doesn’t mean Christians should just give up and stop fishing God calls them to cast their rods, proclaim the message of the gospel faithfully, and to love and witness in Jesus’ name.
The fish will come, people will hear God will make it so!

As we head towards fall and winter what are suggestions with how I can prevent a dip in my mood, potentially seasonal affective disorder (SAD)?
Thank you This is a terrific question There are several reasons why people have depressive episodes or seasonal depression Vitamin D levels play an important role in prevention Spending daily time in front of a light box and especially outdoors in nature can be quite helpful. Connecting with friends and people on a regular basis
Learning something new eg to dance, to play an instrument, to create art A good morning routine is vital And take care of your sleep hygiene But please come see us we have been helping patients with SAD for over 25 years
How do Hotel buyers operate?
I have been writing about the hotel buyers for years now They have now changed where they operate
A fellow dealer told me that they are now using churches and community centres
I had this confirmed by a client who visited them in a church with h s dad’s collection
As I was working on testing and com ng up with a price for h m on that collection, he was telling me about how he visited them at a community centre in Vancouver earlier in the week
After I finished working out a price, I asked him how much he was offered
He replied $4,000 00 I removed my hand from the work sheet and h s gold came to $8,000 00 and the silver $3,000 00
Almost three times what they were offered
You or your family shou d be ab e to receive more for your gold and silver

I have hearing loss in both ears, but one is definitely worse than the other. Can I just get one hearing aid for now?
You can, but you probably shouldn’t. Cover one eye with your hand: notice how clarity, depth perception, and spatial awareness are affected? It’s not much different with our ears. Even if your hearing loss is predominately in one ear, wearing hearing aids in both can help with:
• Sound distinction and speech understanding (it’s easier to be selective with what you listen to)
• Sound detection (you can more reliably detect where sounds are coming from, which is important for social and safety reasons)
• Sound quality
• Brain stimulation (your brain likes getting equal input from both ears)
• Listening ease (amplification in each ear is less tiring, less straining and more satisfying)
Just as we use both eyes to see our best, our two ears work together to help us hear our best!

When are “flu shots” going to be available?
Thank you for this great question In general, influenza vaccinations are available for administration from mid to late October onwards as the “flu season” runs from approximately mid-November to March Everyone 6 months and older in the province will be eligible for a free immunization this year The publicly funded “high-dose” vaccine will only be available to a specific group of seniors residing in long term care facilities or First Nations communities Nasal vaccine should be available for children RSV and COVID booster vaccines may be available, still waiting on confirmation from the Province Your best defense against influenza is a combination of practicing good health habits, avoiding those who are ill, hand washing and getting your flu shot Call me or come and see me for more information

The lender just wants to ensure that you are paying fair market price for the property you are considering purchasing They want to ensure you aren’t paying $900,000 an appraisal protects you as well as the lender who is granting your mortgage. Another reason for an appraisal is that lenders want to ensure that the property you are purchasing is a good, solid investment. In heated or cooling markets an appraisal will make sure you are paying the current fair market price for your new home
Is there any way to make dental freezing and injections more pleasant and painless?
com
is a technology that controls flow rate and pressure of
Digital
This method is significantly more comfortable than the traditional dental syringe and employs a technique that makes the injection virtually painless. This type of freezing shortens treatment time for every patient and best of all, pain management for the patient is phenomenal. Some people don’t even realize that freezing is taking place. It’s nice to see children, who have never had dental anesthesia, leave their visit never having to experience the “anxiety” associated with “Syringe-Type” delivery methods. Many patients who work would never schedule a procedure in the middle of the day because of profound and lasting anesthesia. With Digital Anesthetic system, patients are now willing to come in at any time, knowing they will be able to communicate effectively at their job. This method of freezing greatly decreases anxiety associated with dental treatment and makes life easier for both the dental team and the patient. 130 – 4977 Trenant Street, Delta smile@ladnerdentist com

When is the right time to change to
winter tires?
Changing to winter tires depends on a few factors. If you travel to areas outside of the lower mainland such as Whistler, the Southern Interior, or some portions of Vancouver Island, winter rated tires with sufficient tread depth are legally required starting October 1.
Keep in mind ambient temperatures too - when we see the thermometer dip below 7 degrees celsius, it’s time to switch over
Winter tires aren’t just for ice and snow either With our heavy fall and winter rains, chances of hydroplaning are greatly reduced compared to all seasons.
In need of a new set of tires? We carry a wide variety of brands to suit your driving needs and budget. Reach out to Delta Mobile Tire to book your next changeover before this seasons rush!
Interest rates have risen substantially over the last 12 months, what should I do now to take advantage?

Important Drain Cleaning Warning for Rainy Season
High volumes of rain can lead to drain back-ups and flooding during the fall months. As the rainy season approaches, it’s crucial to prioritize the maintenance and cleaning of storm drains and perimeter drains around your property Neglecting proper drain cleaning can lead to serious consequences, including flooding, property damage, and the inability to use any showers or toilets in your home. We suggest camera inspections to get a clear view of your drain condition. We have been able to identify large rocks, roots, and misaligned or collapsed pipes before they turned into messy emergencies.
If you suspect roots, it may be possible to auger them while you prepare to get that section of pipe replaced. For collapsed or misaligned pipes, you may consider trenchless replacements. Do you have a sump pump? Some homes have storm drains and perimeter drains that collect into a sump and are pumped up to a storm drain. These should be cleaned out every few years and should be serviced annually to prevent backups. If you have a question, feel free to give us a call.

Gemma Dumas begins cross country season
IAN JACQUES
ijacques@delta-optimist com
The new cross country and track and field season is set to begin at Simon Fraser University and will feature a talented middle distance runner from South Delta Secondary.
Gemma Dumas is one of five new recruits that will be a part of the Red Leafs program
Dumas is joined by B.C. stars Kerlinda Chatwin from Surrey, Serena Kennedy-Hailu from Port Coquitlam and Steph Millar from Lake Country
Grace Mack, a dynamic athlete from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador is the final recruit.
“I’m excited to welcome a talented group of young athletes in both cross country and track and field,” said Brit Townsend, head coach of the Red Leafs “They have great credentials that will make an impact in the first season. They are also strong students and will be very good ambassadors for the university. Cross country season is fast approaching so they
will be on a steep learning curve ”
Dumas will compete in both cross country and track and field for SFU
In 2022, she posted 12th-place finishes at the B C high school and the provincial U18 cross country meets.
Representing SDSS, Dumas ran a time of 19 minutes 19 seconds at November’s high school competition in Victoria She crossed the finish line for Ocean Athletics at the U18 provincial event in 18:47. Both covered fivekm distances.
Two years ago, she was 13th in the U18 race at the provincial cross country championships (15:24) and 15th at the BC high school meet (20:20).
“I chose SFU because it has strong academics as well as athletics,” said Dumas, an honour roll student who was the valedictorian of her grad class “It is also cool that it’s the only Canadian school to compete in the NCAA.”
In track and field, Dumas won the 800 meters at the South Fraser zone championship meet, taking the final in 2:27.62.
She also recorded second-place results in the 400 (1:01.68) and 1,500 meters (5:05 27)
Dumas placed seventh
in the 1,500 m at the provincials in 2022 with a time of 4:55.26, just behind current Red Leaf Rachael Watkins. She was
ninth in the 800 meters (2:27.95).
SFU raced its first cross country meet of 2023 on Sept. 15 at NCAA Div.
I California Davis The indoor and outdoor track and field competition schedule will begin in the new year.

Isaac St. Cyr did South Delta proud on the national pickleball stage last month
St. Cyr was in Regina competing for the third year in a row at the 2023 Pickleball Canada National Championship
“This was the first year I committed to playing in every possible eventfive events in five days,” he said. “Boy, did it take a toll on my body! At 31, I am no longer a young buck, but have no regrets and will attend nationals again in Nova Scotia next year. ”
St. Cyr said he had phenomenal playing partners including Meghan Kemp-Gee from North Vancouver in mixed doubles, and Ashton Bradley from New Brunswick in men ’ s doubles
On the fourth day, after eight grueling matches in 4 0 singles, St Cyr found myself just three points from qualifying for the gold medal match - 9-11, 11-5, and tied 8-8 in the deciding game.
“My poor body was unable to push through, and I managed to limp
away with a bronze medal. I pushed myself to the absolute limit,” he recalled
The last day was 4.0 mixed doubles
“Unfortunately, my partner Meghan pulled her hamstring during a singles game two days before,” he said. “Going into our draw, we knew it would be a long day, as her mobility was quite limited, however, we managed to push through and make it all the way to the semifinals before placing fourth, just one win shy of the
podium. I couldn’t ask for anything more. I am so proud of Meghan for pushing through all that pain and suffering just for the silly game of pickleball
“All in all, it was a magical experience I was just one of more than 600 athletes competing over five grueling days, thrilled to earn our medals, and even more thrilled to rub shoulders with the greats”

We are excited to announce our third annual Heron Hospice Classic raised $80,000 net which enables Heron Hospice Society of Delta to continue to provide end of life supportive care services in our community of Delta. These funds help individuals facing life limiting illness as well as those struggling with the loss of a loved one.
Without the tremendous support of the community, this event would not be possible. We extend a very special thank you to all of our sponsors, donors, participants, volunteers and supporters that contributed significantly to the financial success of this event.
