More units proposed for Evergreen affordable housing SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
More affordable housing units could be added to the second phase of an already-approved project in Ladner. Members of the Affordable Housing Societies made a presentation to Delta council on Tuesday (Oct. 17) to discuss a revised plan for the Evergreen Lane project. A formal application to the city has not been submitted, but council endorsement of the expansion was sought in order to secure funding
as soon as possible from BC Housing. The current development for seniors, families and inclusive housing for persons with intellectual disabilities is a twophase, 198-unit project and received council’s final approval last year. The first phase is now under construction and includes 130 housing units in a four-storey apartment building, on the north part of the site. The approved second phase is for 68 family housing units in a 48-unit, four-storey apartment building and
a 20-unit three-storey townhouse building on the south part of the site. Construction has not yet started on that phase. The new proposal for the second phase would increase the number of non-market rental units from 68 to 130, with an increase in height from four-to-six storeys for the apartment building, and would require an Official Community Plan change. That would see the Evergreen Lane project expand from an initial 198 units to 260. “Economic and affordable housing need condi-

Delta Halloween Patrol ready to roll for three nights SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta and CUPE Local 454 will again conduct the Halloween Patrol program to act as an extra set of eyes and ears at parks and facilities. “Deltans of all ages should
be able to enjoy Halloween festivities without the worry of bad behaviour on the part of a small group of individuals. “The Halloween Patrol provides an extra level of scrutiny on these actors, whose intentions are not in the spirit of Halloween,” said Mayor George
Harvie in a news release. Staff will observe and report any suspicious activities to Delta Police and the fire department. This year’s patrol is set for Friday, Oct. 27; Saturday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 31. The patrols will take place
at Sungod Recreation Centre, South Delta Recreation Centre and Ladner Leisure Centre. The city notes that in a proactive measure to ensure the safety of young people taking part in early Halloween festivities, the patrol will begin an hour earlier at 5:30 p.m.
Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord told the police board last week the city has a “solid plan” in the hope of mitigating some of the risk associated with last year’s Halloween incident at Dennison Park, where a large group of youth engaged in a fireworks fight.

Delta Police scrambling for plan for highway patrol SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta Police Department is working on a plan to patrol and enforce the kilometres of provincial highway within its jurisdiction, as well as crossings such as the Alex Fraser Bridge, but it will be challenging. That’s according to Police Chief Neil Dubord during his presentation to the Delta Police Board last week (Oct. 19), commenting on the BC Highway Patrol’s (RCMP) plan to withdraw from responding to traffic-related calls on the network. Noting his office already receives complaints almost daily about accidents, reckless driving and speeding on the bridge, Dubord said the BCHP likely will withdraw its current service by January 2024. He said his department is certainly, “going to be stretched” to be able to figure
out a plan. “All you need is a little bit of rain and that traffic even gets worse. It’s something we take very seriously. “It’s a priority in our Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan and certainly we’re very concerned about both traffic in the community, and traffic on the major thoroughfares,” Dubord added. The BC Highway Patrol has said it will realign its service delivery model, resulting in the Delta Police Department becoming solely responsible for all traffic-related calls on the provincial highway network, including fatal collisions. Dubord at a police board meeting earlier this year said his department would face budget challenges as it would become fully responsible for 68-kilometres of provincial highway running though the municipality.

According to ICBC, the Alex Fraser Bridge was by far the top crash site in Delta with 1,433 collisions from 2017 to 2021. Delta police start patrolling the bridge next year. In addition to Delta, other communities that will be impacted include New Westminster, North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Richmond, Surrey, Hope, the districts of Kent, Mission and North Vancouver,, as well as the Fraser Valley Regional

District, Township of Langley and Village of Harrison Hot Springs. In a statement to the Optimist this year, the BCHP noted that its mandate, outlined in BC RCMP Provincial policy, is to decrease the number of serious injury and
fatal collisions on provincial highways through proactive enforcement, education, the building of partnerships and the interception of illegal contraband. The mandate has been in place throughout the province and has remained unchanged for at least the last 30 years. The Police Act establishes the responsibility for municipalities with populations over 5,000 to provide policing and law enforcement services within their municipal boundaries. That includes, but is not limited to, all traffic-related calls for service on provincial highways within municipal boundaries, according to the statement. The BCHP said it had communicated with police departments over the past couple of years of the plan which was granted provincial approval earlier this year.

City of Delta, CUPE settle 4.5% increase this year, 4 % for 2024 SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The City of Delta on Friday announced it has reached a twoyear agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 454. The union, which represents more than 900 workers of the city and Delta Police Board civilians, had announced on its website last week that they were pleased a tentative deal was reached with the employer. The deal was ratified this week. A news release from the city notes that the agreement includes a 4.5 per cent increase
for 2023, a four per cent increase for 2024, and a one-time inflationary support payment. The previous contract expired Dec. 31, 2022. “I am pleased to learn that the City of Delta and CUPE Local 454 have reached a new collective agreement that includes fair wage increases and recognizes the inflationary challenges facing our employees,” said Mayor George Harvie. “The city is proud to have a positive relationship with CUPE Local 454 that allowed us to work together to provide staff with adequate pay in line with the region. “Thank you to the bargaining teams for their collective efforts,”
added Harvie. CUPE 454 President Sam Abulail said, “We are pleased to have a new contract in place that better supports workers and helps to address the affordability challenges they face and ensures improved service delivery for residents and businesses. “We look forward to continuing to work with the city to provide quality public services in Delta.” In addition to the wage increases, the new collective agreement contains dental and extended health premium improvements and market adjustments for specialized trade positions.

Cleanup an ongoing chore for Fraser River’s wetlands MIKE SU
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
The Fraser River Tidal Marsh Cleanup Project is now on to part two of its multi-phase cleanup mission in the Fraser River estuary around Delta and Richmond. The B.C. Wildlife Federation, Tsawwassen First Nation and the South Coast Land Management Program, started the project in 2021 and formed a habitat restoration team dedicated to removing debris from the Fraser River estuary. More than 9,500 kilograms of debris was removed during the first phase. This year, the second phase will focus on removing more than 15,000 kg from a
450-hectare area by 2025. According to BCWF, the Fraser River estuary’s ecosystem is constantly threatened as heavy debris accumulates. The damaging effects of this debris on native vegetation, vital for nutrient cycling and erosion control, are becoming increasingly apparent. One of the biggest concerns is the debris consists mostly of plastic. Plastic waste can smother and thus hinder primary productivity, invertebrate biomass, and nutrient exchange. As the plastic debris breaks down, it adds microplastics into the environment. Conservation stewardship assistant Rachel Teichman, said 80 per cent of what they found was Styrofoam, from discarded clothing to

gets waterlogged and becomes super heavy, and it also breaks down into little microplastics.” Aside from the plastic waste, electronics are also spotted in the river.
Meanwhile, the debris in the estuary’s marshes puts the local fish and wildlife population at risk, as entrapment and ingestion can lead to mortality. “It is hard because there aren’t necessarily the policies enacted that would really stop this pollution from the source,” Teichman said. Krystal Lockert, TFN manager of Natural Resource, states that
while the cleanup crew faces challenges the initiative is critical and worth supporting. “Our environment is changing so much. This is the responsibility we all share if we want to maintain our future generations,” Lockert said, “We need to be more proactive, addressing concerns to these areas that we love.” The wildlife federation and Tsawwassen First Nation are both searching for solutions to minimize the damage caused by debris. “The estuary is such a significant area for so many species like birds and especially the salmon population, as they use it as a nursery and migrating area,” Teichman said. “If we don’t do it now, it’s a lot of work to do in the future,” Lockert said.

No word yet on tunnel exit SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Will there or won’t there be a second exit out of Ladner? That’s the multi-million-dollar question that remains to be answered as the B.C. government announced the next phase in the process that will see the aging George Massey Tunnel replaced with a new eight-lane immersed tube crossing. Following a request for qualifications, three bid teams have been invited to submit proposals for the competitive selection process, to enter into a design early works agreement with the province, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Following the evaluation of submissions to
the request for proposals, the province will choose the design-build team. It is anticipated the team will be on board in spring of 2024. Concurrent with procurement, the Fraser River Tunnel Project continues through the province’s environmental assessment process. The project received its readiness decision last month. What hasn’t been indicated is whether the City of Delta’s request to include a second exit from Ladner will be included as part of the project. It had been a component of the previous Liberal government’s bridge project that was scrapped but the exit was not included in the current government’s plan. At a recent presenta-
tion to council, Donald Trapp, Executive Director of Project Management for Transportation Investment Corp. (TI Corp.), provided an update on the latest on the Fraser River Tunnel Project. Mayor George Harvie and Coun. Dylan Kruger reiterated the need for a second exit out of Ladner, (at River Road.) Representatives with the Ministry of Transportation and Highways in an earlier presentation noted it would be contingent on the province receiving sufficient funding from the federal government. Trapp told council that TI Corp. is delivering the current approved project, but the ministry continues to advance for a second exit.

Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES
I
t’s a very simple message: if you are going to drink, don’t drive. Every month on its social media pages (Facebook and Instagram), Delta Police post the number of days of that month and the number of impaired drivers that have been taken off our roads by officers. In September, for instance, 30 days – 52 drivers. In August, 31 days - 62 drivers. October numbers for 2023 will be coming in the next week or two, but I asked Delta Police as I was curious, what the numbers were for October 2022, 31 days - 49 drivers. These numbers continue to shock me. How are people still drinking or taking drugs and then think it is OK to grab their keys and get behind the wheel? The dangers of drinking and driving go back to the days when I was born. I remember discussions with family around the dinner table and some of the stupid decisions that my parents and relatives made when they were young. I have had friends killed in drinking and driving cases – one of which was a member of my high school championship football team. His tragic death, which was so unavoidable, devastated our school community at that time in 1992. This story is not uncommon and I’m sure that many of us out there reading this column can relate to this. In May, MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter announced the inaugural top five award to Lower Mainland police departments and RCMP for their exceptional work in impaired driving enforcement. Delta Police Department ranked second in the top five with a score of 94. Officers in Delta are to be commended for their efforts in taking impaired drivers off the roads. Again, however, I have to ask why should they have to?
We are now officially less than a year away from the next provincial election (it is set for next Oct. 19) and B.C.’s political landscape continues to be a one-sided situation. Despite a chronic inability to make major inroads on fixing critical areas of concern the ruling NDP government has seemingly coated itself in a Teflon-like substance that has made it almost impossible for other political parties to lay a finger on it. Several recent opinion polls show the New Democrats have a decisive and, for now anyway, apparently unbeatable edge over its political opponents. The NDP is coasting along with the support of more than 40 per cent of the voters while the two nearest parties are stuck in the 20 per cent range. Premier David Eby, meanwhile, has not lost any footing since taking over from the popular John Horgan and in fact enjoys one of the highest approval ratings of any premier in the country. Yet the same polls that show the NDP is the choice of enough people to propel it to victory come the next election also show the government is getting woefully bad marks when it comes to handling the top issues of those same voters. The latest Angus Reid poll, for example, found that three
issues — cost of living, housing affordability and health care — top all other issues in order of importance. However, about 80 per cent of the electorate think the NDP government is doing a poor job when it comes to handling the cost of living and housing affordability and only 30 per cent give it good marks for health care. That is astounding when you think about it. How could a government be given such harsh reviews of its performance on the biggest issues yet still enjoy such lofty levels of voter support? There are likely two possible answers. The most obvious one is that the alternative choices for forming government are simply not palatable for enough voters to defeat the government. The B.C. United Party continues to drift along as a largely unknown entity, unsure of itself and grappling with internal identity issues that hardly make it seem like a government in waiting. The B.C. Conservatives, the new kid on the block, are tilting fairly far to the right (and frustrating the B.C. United folks in the process) where there are simply not enough voters — particularly in urban and suburban ridings — to win power. The B.C. Greens, meanwhile, now find themselves
in fourth place in the polls and show no signs of expanding their reach. The other explanation for the NDP’s continued popularity may be that voters do not think governments can actually solve big problems anymore. The housing affordability crisis is almost a decade old now and many people view issues like inflation and cost of living as global issues beyond a local government’s ability to deal with them. We may be viewing the classic “better dance with the devil you know than the one you don’t” analogy when trying to figure out the NDP’s hold on its popularity. Of course, there is still a lot of ground to cover before we head to the polls again, unless Eby and his advisers are tempted by a prolonged “split” among the two center-right parties and opt to pull the pin early and perhaps call a snap vote in the spring. And things can change fast in politics, which is something the opposition parties are clearly pinning their hopes on. But if those things do not change substantially, this election year could be a very trying and frustrating one for the opposition parties. They had better hope the NDP’s Teflon coating disappears sooner than later. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC.

Port numbers are flawed Editor: When it comes to container traffic, the Oct. 5 Optimist article by Phil Melnychuk paints a rosier picture of the Port of Vancouver’s operations than is the reality. Clearly, Port of Vancouver CEO Victor Pang would like to gloss over the Port’s falling container volumes, because he needs to demonstrate that the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 development is needed. The market realities show otherwise. Total container traffic was down by more than three per cent in 2022 versus 2021. Worse yet, 2022 full container loads were
down by nine per cent, compared to 2021. In fact, there were fewer loaded containers handled by the Port in 2022 than in every year, back to 2013. That dismal picture continues in 2023. Total container volumes for the eight months to August 2023 are off by 18 per cent, with full imports falling by 19.5 per cent, compared to the same period in 2022. These reductions in container volumes are not solely the result of reduced consumer demand as CEO Pang suggests. The Port of Vancouver has always relied on handling significant volumes of U.S.
container traffic (up to 25 per cent). But, as said in several articles in Business in Vancouver and other publications, the Port of Vancouver is losing that U.S. traffic. The Port of Vancouver has plenty of spare container terminal capacity and will have well into the 2030s. By the time more capacity is needed, other less environmentally damaging port expansions will be ready (Prince Rupert, Deltaport Berth 4). Thus, Roberts Bank Terminal 2 will never be needed. Roger Emsley, Against Port Expansion Community Group
Editor: My brother, Hans, died March 14, 2022 at the young age of 55. Incredibly sad. What is even sadder is that he was a hard worker and was employed full-time in various jobs since the age of 18. The saddest part is he contributed to the Canada Pension Plan his entire working career. My brother was not
fortunate enough to find his significant other in his life, and even more unfortunately, did not have any children. He would have made a great father. He was, though, crazy about my sons, his nephews, and treated them like his own. As administrator of his estate, I was shocked to find that my brother’s estate was not entitled, aside from the $2,500
death benefit, to any of his hard-earned CPP contributions, so the Government of Canada basically stole what was rightfully his … CPP contributions he made throughout his career. This theft has to stop and CPP contributions should be refunded to the estate of the deceased. Carolien van Halderen

Delta council OKs two Ladner townhouse proposals SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta council this week granted preliminary approval for a zoning permit and development permit to allow construction of a six-unit townhouse complex in the 5100-block of 45th Avenue in Ladner. The development would include two, threelevel townhouse buildings with driveway access from 45th Avenue.
Located near Delta Secondary and surrounded by low-rise apartments, townhouses, single detached residential lots and infill singledetached residential lots, the property currently has an older house which would be demolished. There are 18 trees on the 11,800-square-foot property, all of which are proposed to be removed. The planning department notes that the proposal would be con-
sistent with the Official Community Plan designation for the site. The site is also located in the Ladner Village Development Permit Area, intended to “encourage the formation of a liveable village and a desirable commercial and residential mix.” Council also granted preliminary approval for a rezoning and development variance permit for a five-unit townhouse in the 5400-block of 47A
Avenue. That would include two, three-level townhouse buildings with a private road access off 47A Avenue. Surrounded by townhouse developments and single-detached dwellings, the development would be built on a 9,300-square-foot lot that also contains an older house which would be demolished. The proposed development is consistent with the OCP designation.

Many of the properties near the 45A Avenue site have already been redeveloped in recent years. There are seven trees on the property, all of which are proposed to be removed. The planning department notes that, to date, emails from six households expressing
opposition have been received. Issues include street parking, neighbourhood character, visitor parking, privacy, traffic congestion and safety.

If you’ve ever wondered how clean your indoor air is or how much power you’re burning, the Ladner Pioneer Library, Tsawwassen Library and George Mackie Library can help out. As part of the Fraser Valley Regional Library’s Playground kits, the three libraries are lending out air-quality monitors and energy meters so people can measure for themselves. “The library has thoughtfully selected these items to lend … to
empower our customers. The technology and resources we’re lending provide actionable data and information that will impact their health, wallet, and our planet. Together with our customers, we hope to enact positive change in our community,” said Heather Scoular, director of customer experience at FVRL. The air quality monitor kits are portable and easy to use and provide real-time information on indoor air quality. Users can test for carbon dioxide (CO2), small particulate matter (PM 2.5),

formaldehyde (HCHO), and volatile organic compound, said FVRL. As well, the energy meter kits can be used to test a variety of devices. The data can be used to track energy consumption, estimate costs, and make informed decisions that will save money and help to reduce household carbon emissions. The kits, partially funded through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, and can be borrowed with an FVRL card. People can place a hold to borrow these sets by visiting fvrl. ca/airqualitymonitors or fvrl.ca/energymeters.

Grandmothers help out grandmothers a world away MIKE SU
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i te r
A group of grandmothers in Delta is selling handmade crafts to help grandmothers in Africa. As the HIV epidemic swept across Africa, countless children have been left alone and vulnerable after their parents died from HIV or AIDS. Despite little to no support, many grandmothers have stepped up to care for the orphaned children. The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in 2006, which includes the South Fraser Gogos/ Grandmothers, to support grandmas in Africa. South Fraser Gogos later branched out to different districts, and the Delta group has rallied more than 11 grandmothers to help. Member Cathryn Bolton said she can’t fathom the enormous responsibility on those grandmothers. “I too, am a grandmother, but I only have two granddaughters,

Delta grandmothers are raising money to help grandmothers in Africa raise orphaned children. but the grandmothers in Africa, many of them have 10 to 15 grandchildren,” Bolton said. “I can’t imagine the load that is on their shoulders, trying to bring up that many children without a source of income.” Bolton said the campaign is not merely to offer financial aid, but to enable them to become more self-reliant. The campaign will supply funds for sewing machines that will allow grandmothers to generate income through sewing services. The foundation also will offer gardening training and starting funds to help the grandmothers grow and sell produce. Marie Thomson, who has been with the South
Fraser Gogos since 2011, said while the group is small, they can raise roughly $6,000 yearly. “Other groups do the bike ride or bake sales,” Thomson said. “We sell tote bags and any handcrocheted or knitted items, all handmade by local grandmothers. They sell pretty well as people tend to go for handmade rather than manufactured.” The group will be at Creative Treasures Craft Fair in the East Delta Hall from Nov. 8 to 11, and at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre’s crafts fair, Nov. 25 to 26. Both Thomson and Bolton encouraged other grandmothers to join, as the group always looks for people who can sew, knit, or crochet.

Nature Notes: Nice to see Delta farms help with species at risk Farm landscapes evoke images of barn swallows feasting on countless insects; bumble bees visiting blueberry flowers; and barn owls silently hunting for voles. The Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust promotes stewardship practices on local farms to support these species at risk. We pair wildlife monitoring with our programs, such as establishing grassland set-aside fields or hedgerows. In the June Nature Notes column, I talked about how we were starting a bat-monitoring program on farmland in Delta. The goal for this first year was to assess if our stewardship programs are providing useful habitats for bats and to determine which species are present. Our research consisted of two parts. During the most active season for bats (June 1 – July 15), we deployed ultrasonic recorders in grassland
set-asides and hedgerows to see which bats were visiting for foraging or roosting. Towards the end of the active season in July, we also set up a bat recorder on top of a car and drove throughout Ladner, Tsawwassen to see if, or where, there were bat hot spots in our area. We detected six species of bats across all sites and survey methods. The four most commonly detected species were little brown myotis, hoary bat, silver-haired bat, and Yuma myotis. Little brown myotis was observed at all 14 monitoring sites of grassland set-asides and hedgerows, and the other species were observed at the majority of the sites. These four most commonly detected species are all considered species of conservation concern because of population declines caused by disease, depredation, and habitat loss. It is encouraging to see farmland support so many important species of bats.

Elvis is coming to Tsawwassen IODE’s Tribute to Elvis event will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, at St. David’s Anglican Church. IODE Boundary Bay and Steve Elliot invite you to join them to celebrate the glitz, glamour, and electric energy of Elvis Presley at their Tribute to Elvis event. Elliot, a B.C.-based Elvis tribute artist, has won awards for his performances. He replicates Elvis’ groundbreaking charisma and performance quality, transporting audiences back to the 1950s. Not only is this event sure to spark joy in event attendees, but it also has philanthropy at its core. “IODE is a registered Canadian women’s charitable organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children, youth, and those in need,” said chapter president Frances Dickson. This organization began in 1900 and the Boundary Bay Chapter was established in April 2006. Nationally, IODE works to benefit the lives of Canadians through education, community service, and citizenship programs. Collectively, their chapters have established the Read for Life Program (a program that aims to increase

More specifically, IODE’s Boundary Bay Chapter works to better the lives of South Delta residents. The concert is a major fundraiser for the Chapter with funds raised going towards local programs primarily in South Delta including B.C. and Alberta Guide Dogs and a local Women’s Transition House. Additionally, Dickson notes that IODE Boundary Bay supports
local students by giving each kindergarten child in North Delta school book bags that they have made, along with three books to support a summer reading program in the school. In South Delta, every elementary school is annually given the IODE Violet Downey Awardwinning book of the year, and donations are made to both Delta and South Delta secondary schools to help fund various projects. LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
How to protect long-term cognitive health
METRO CREATIVE PHOTO
Cognitive health should be a priority. Adults can employ various strategies to reduce their risk of cognitive decline as they age.
Home is Right Here! Good friends, great food and a carefree way of life—discover the joy
pressure All chronic conditions cause long-term repercussions, but observational studies show having high blood pressure in mid-life increases the risk of cognitive decline later in life. Lowering blood pressure lowers the risk for mild cognitive impairment and possibly dementia. Challenge your brain Nurturing social contacts, engaging in stimulating mental activities like reading and doing puzzles, seeing new places, and learning new things can help keep the brain in top form. Manage stress Stress can take its toll on the body, and there is reason to believe that it may adversely affect cognitive health as well. Make every stride to reduce stress, whether that involves taking vacations, meditating, laughing with friends and family, or engaging
in relaxing activities that relieve stress. Get enough vitamin D Vitamin D is linked to a host health benefits, including its potential to promote a healthy brain. Individuals can get more time outdoors to get vitamin D naturally from the sun and eat foods rich in vitamin D. If doctors find that vitamin D levels are exceptionally low, supplementation can help. Pay attention to hearing loss Certain hearing loss has been linked to cognitive decline. Researchers in Italy concluded that people with central hearing loss had a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment than those with no hearing loss or peripheral hearing loss. Individuals with central hearing loss are urged to speak to their physicians to determine if they can take preventive action to stave off further decline. -Metro Creative

Cognitive health is not something to take for granted. Although a certain level of memory loss can be expected as people age, when the ability to clearly think, learn and remember is compromised, those changes can affect an individual’s ability to perform daily activities and should serve as a cause for concern. Brain health should be a priority for everyone. Individuals can safeguard brain health - particularly cognitive health - by taking these steps: Be more health-conscious Working with doctors, individuals can put their health first. This includes getting routine screenings, managing chronic health problems, limiting or avoiding alcohol and nicotine products, and getting the recommended amount of sleep each night. LIVING THE GOOD LIFE
Early warning signs for heart disease Cardiovascular disease claims more lives across the globe every year than any other disease or condition, and many of those fatalities are credited to heart disease. Date from the Canadian Chronic Disease Surveillance System indicates that every hour, roughly 14 Canadian adults, age 20 and over, with diagnosed heart disease, lose their lives. Education is one of the ways in which deaths from heart disease can be prevented. That’s especially true when individuals learn to recognize warning signs of the disease and take prompt action once such indicators appear. Chest pain: Discomfort between the neck and upper abdomen is characterized as chest pain, which does not necessarily indicate
the presence of heart disease. Chest pain may occur because the heart isn’t getting enough oxygen or blood. It’s important that individuals recognize that the intensity of pain in the chest does not indicate the severity of the problem. That means that even mild discomfort in the chest should be brought to the attention of a physician immediately. Shortness of breath: Shortness of breath can occur because the heart isn’t pumping blood as well as it should, thus causing blood to back up in the veins that go from the lungs to the heart. This results in fluid leaking into the lungs, thus producing shortness of breath. Shortness of breath can occur at any time, including when individuals are active or at rest.
Get Your Free 30 Day Trial!
Coughing or wheezing: Another indicator of fluid buildup in the lungs related to the heart is persistent coughing or wheezing. When coughing, individuals may spit up a pink or bloody mucus. Swelling in the lower legs: Swelling in the legs, ankles or feet is another indicator of heart troubles. One of the byproducts of a poorly functioning heart is slower blood flow, and that reduction in flow can cause a backup in the veins of the legs. That backup can cause fluid to build up in the tissues, which leads to swelling. Heart disease is a significant threat to public health. Learning to recognize signs of the disease can save an untold number of lives. - Metro Creative

God never intended for us to live life alone. (Acts 4:32-35) “Je suis - parce que tu l’es!” “I am - because you are!” I am a firm believer in God’s plan and purpose for every person. I don’t think we can fully comprehend how that works. But it is true, that for God to unleash his purpose for us, he puts certain persons in our path without whom the purpose-equation would not balance. “I am because you are,” is an African proverb that is often associated with the philosophy of Ubuntu. The term, Ubuntu, encapsulates all the qualities of a respected mem-

ber of society in many Bantu language countries of Africa. It is a humanist ideology that emphasizes the importance of compassion, generosity, honesty, magnanimity, empathy, understanding, forgiveness and the
ability to share. I have fond memories of sharing food and clothes with my siblings. That colourful jacket belonged to all of us. We did not have individual plates, so we ate from the same plate! Sharing food and clothes was a great way to bond with family members and build strong relationships. It also helped to foster a sense of generosity and empathy. There are some people who have made our journey smooth in this life and those people are sent by God, to us. I am a beneficiary of the gratitude of missionaries who understood the concept of, “I am, because you are.”

ogan Schuss is looking for a fresh start and he thinks Calgary will afford that opportunity. Schuss recently signed a one-year deal with the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) bringing his eight-year chapter with the Vancouver Warriors, also of the NLL, to a close. “What a ride it’s been, Vancouver,” Schuss wrote on social media. “Thank-you to all the amazing fans, team staff, and teammates I’ve had the privilege of getting to know over the last eight years. That being said, I can’t wait to start my new chapter with the Calgary Roughnecks.” The Ladner native said he will still be living and working in Vancouver and will fly to games in Calgary and elsewhere once the season starts. “For me, a good opportunity arose,” he told the Optimist. “The last couple of years in Vancouver … I haven’t been myself and I was looking for a fresh change. Calgary will be a good opportunity for that. Vancouver is moving in the direction of bringing some younger players in and I wasn’t maybe in the picture for them in the long run, so I wanted a fresh start and wanted to go to a team that wanted me. “Coach Josh Sanderson reached out to me and knew I was coming off an injury and battling my way back, but he had all the faith in the world in me coming back stronger and still having a few good years left in me, so I really appreciated that phone call from him
and speaking with him. It was a good decision.” Speaking of that injury, Schuss is six months recovered from his ACL injury that brought his Warriors season last year to a crashing halt. He said rehab is going well and he’s feeling good. “I’m definitely ahead of the game. I’ve had some great training staff and people who have been working with me and set me up for success moving forward,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll be 100 per cent by training camp, but I want to go to training camp and work my way back. The team has made it clear that they don’t want me to rush it. They want me healthy and ready to go and ready to make an impact for them, so I really appreciate that.” Training camp starts in November and the regular season in early December, with the full schedule in January. “I’ve been with Vancouver for the last eight to nine years. Sometimes, a fresh start is good for a player especially in the latter years of their career,” he said. “I understand that maybe I don’t have five, six, seven years left in me, it’s maybe closer to three, but a lot of the top-end players are playing in their mid to late 30s. “Being 32 now, I still have some gas left in the tank. I have a lot of desire left. I love this game. Calgary is a great team and I know a lot of the guys having played with them before, so it’s a great fit.” Boxla bits The Delta Islanders Junior Lacrosse Club announced that Schuss has been named the new general manager for their Junior A Tier 1 program.
Ladner’s Logan Schuss has signed a one-year contract to play with the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League this season.

RITCHIE, Dudley
HAMAR, Roberta Sandra (1954 - 2023) The world lost beloved grandmother, mother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend, Roberta Sandra Hamar (nee Wong), October 8th, 2023. After a courageous battle against cancer, Roberta passed away surrounded by her beloved family at age 69. “She made broken look beautiful and strong look invincible. She walked with the universe on her shoulders and made it look like a pair of wings.” -Arian Dancu Roberta devoted her life to her family and many life-long friends. She is survived by her husband, Tom; sons, Alan (Jennifer), Erik (Jaclyn), and daughter, Katherine (Richard); her cherished grandchildren, Emily and Nolan, Remi, and Ella and William; siblings Thomas Wong, Jr. (Winnie), Patricia Wong (Fred), and Randy Wong (Menchie), and sister-in-law Anne Bibby (Jonathan); as well as her numerous and beloved relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her eldest sister, Theresa Wong, and parents, Juney and Thomas Wong Sr. Her remarkable life was made of a thousand unremarkable steps strung together: large, homecooked family dinners; time spent with friends and dear siblings whose companionship she so treasured; quiet moments with her grandchildren. Roberta was born in Vancouver in 1954, and grew up in Richmond, where she and her siblings bonded deeply as one of the first Chinese Canadians in the Steveston area. Roberta met her husband of 45 years while attending the University of British Columbia, where she earned her Bachelor’s of Arts in Home Economics. Together, Roberta and Tom grew their family in Tsawwassen and built their dream home in which Roberta devoted herself to filling with love, laughter, food, and family. Roberta had a special gift for caring for and connecting with people; she was forever thinking of others. Her brilliant smile and generous heart were greatly loved and will be deeply missed. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Irene Thomas Hospice Centre, for whose compassionate and dignified care we will be forever grateful. MEYER, Maria (Ria) Berta (nee Laven) It is with heart-felt sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Maria (Ria) Berta Meyer (nee Laven). We wish to thank the staff, doctors and nurses at Delta Hospital for their passionate care. Ria was born in Bussum, North Holland on December 21, 1933 and passed October 3, 2023. She is pre-deceased by her husband Cornelus Meyer, father Willem and mother Agnes Emely and younger sister Ena (Everdina). She leaves behind her daughters Yvonne (Joey) of Enderby, BC and Marion (Dave) of Tsawwassen, BC. Grandchildren Jody, Geoffrey, Caitlin (Sean), and Elizabeth (Shawn) and one wonderful great granddaughter, Makenna (age 4). We believe her greatest joy was spending time with her great granddaughter. It gave Mom satisfaction to share all she had, to make things a little easier. I asked Mom once if her childhood was okay, considering the war in Europe during her youth. She answered quickly that her childhood was awesome. Mom was very gifted with petite point, sewing and crafting. Her younger years were filled with athletics and adventure. Travelling by ship, she emigrated to Canada in the early 50’s by herself and began her working career as an Au Pair and later after her daughters were well into school she had a successful career as a Unit Clerk at Lions Gate Hospital. Ria enjoyed her nearly 20 years of volunteering for the Delta Hospital Society at the thrift store in Ladner. She loved being able to serve. Her reward was happy customers at her check out. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling to California for several winters and had a great group of friends there as well as the Gang in Tsawwassen. Later when Dad passed (2000) Mom continued travelling to Holland, Alaska, Hawaii and California. Mom would be 90 this December and was looking forward to an easier lifestyle at KinVillage. Between every line here are so many more stories and we look forward to remembering them with the hundreds of photos we inherit. There will be a gathering and Celebration of Life on December 3, 2023 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at Tsawwassen Coast Hotel, 1665 56 St, Delta, BC In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to the Delta Hospital Society, Ladner, BC. (www.deltahospitalauxiliary.org) With love, Yvonne and Marion. oxoxox
It is with sadness, but great appreciation for a life well-lived, that we announce the death of our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather Dudley Ritchie. Dad was born in Montreal, Quebec, on All Saints Day, November 1, 1927 and died in Ladner, BC, on September 25, 2023 at the ripe old age of 95. Dad’s career as an Anglican priest was immensely fulfilling for him. As a young lad, he left Quebec and moved alone, out West to work at lumber camps on BC’s coast before attending The Anglican School of Theology on the UBC campus. Dad was ordained a priest in 1953 and as the new Rector of St. George’s Church in Rossland, BC, he was invited to a Christmas party where he met and fell in love with a very attractive young lady in a white knitted dress whose name was Shirley. Six months later they were married in the same church. Dad and Mom had 61 years of wedded bliss before Mom died in 2015. Dad’s career took him from churches to jail to businesses and back to churches. In his spare time, he made significant contributions to the fabric of church communities, volunteer organizations, an investment club, a woodworking club and his very popular Bible study group which he led until two weeks before his death. Another life-long priority for Dad was keeping his body and mind fit. Even at 95 he was golfing twice a week, swimming twice a week, going for daily walks, doing his own shopping, cooking and gardening, and reading the Globe and Mail cover to cover. After Mom died, Dad was blessed with the friendship of Liz Macdonald. He was grateful for all the travel experiences they shared together. Dad is survived by his eldest daughter, Melanie (Bill); son Mark (Martha); and daughter, Cynthia (Fritz); seven grandchildren William, Elizabeth, Victoria, Christopher, Michael, Stefan and Tristan; and three great-grandchildren Alexandra, James and Emma. A memorial service for the wonderful life of a remarkable man will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at All Saints Anglican Church, 4755 Arthur Drive, Ladner, BC. Donations in memory of Dudley can be made to the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society https://www.deltahospitalauxiliary.org/donations/ and The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund https://pwrdf.org/give-today/.
Celebrate the lives of loved ones with your stories, photographs and tributes.

STOWELL, Nicola Janice 1942 - 2023 Nicky passed away peacefully at Delta Hospital on Wednesday 11th, October. She had been ill for much of 2023. Nicky was born outside London in May, 1942, the first-born daughter of Bob and Iris Stowell. To keep his family safe, Bob moved them to Helmdon in Northants. The family moved to Bromley, Kent, soon after the war. Nicky’s sister Julie was born in 1947. In 1964, after completing her training as a physiotherapist, Nicky moved to Sydney, Australia, where she lived and worked for two years. Returning to London in the late 1960s, she secured a senior position at Barts Hospital. In 1975, she was on the move again, this time to Vancouver. She worked at VGH and then with the Home Care division at the South Health Unit in Vancouver. She met her husband Cliff at a Toastmasters convention in 1984. They were married eighteen months later during the first week of Expo 86. Nicky was a skilled toastmaster, a voracious reader and a keen gardener. She loved sacred music and was a member of many choirs through her adult life. Possessed of a great sense of humour, she was an entertaining storyteller. Nicky was a great travelling companion. She and Cliff enjoyed trips to Thailand, Kenya, Jamaica, Australia as well as an annual holiday to the UK. Nicky was predeceased by her father Bob, her mother Iris and her brother-in-law Mike Taylor. She is survived by her husband Cliff Caprani and her sister Julie Taylor. She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. Born to Marianne and the Honourable John David Taggart, the eldest of four siblings. Jim loved to ski, sail, travel, play the guitar and sports. After graduating from Prince of Wales Secondary in Vancouver, Jim received a degree in commerce with a transportation major at the University of British Columbia. Jim found his soulmate in Gloria, and they shared 50 years together writing a timeless love story. Making significant contributions to the fabric of the Sacred Heart Parish community and the community at large was always important to him. From playing his guitar and singing while leading the choir at Sunday masses, to his participation in several church positions, including the Music Ministry for Walking in the Spirit prayer group. His faith filled desire to lead through action was inspiring. Jim was an experienced transportation executive who co-founded Silver Pacific Investments, a freight broker business, which grew into an international success. His lifelong career in transportation was immensely fulfilling for him. He is remembered throughout the company as a great leader, friend, confidant, and man. He was an avid golfer, lover of the culinary arts, and curator of travel stories from his many adventures around the world. Jim was passionate about food and wine, a huge reader who would consume multiple series of fantasy fiction, and an avid guitar player who loved music - especially the “classics” from the 60’s and 70’s. Jim was known as a loyal, kind, and charismatic man who had a great sense of humour. He was a loving husband, dedicated father, proud grandfather, and compassionate friend to those who knew him. Preceded in death by his parents: Marianne and the Honourable John David Taggart, and his brother Ian. Jim is survived by his loving wife Gloria Taggart, his adult children Tamara Falcos, Matthew Taggart, and Melissa Arriola and their families, nine grandchildren and a great-grandson. Thank you to the amazing nurses and doctors who took such great care of Jim in his final days at Delta Hospital. Your compassionate care for him was very much appreciated. We are thankful to God that he heard and answered our prayers, and he is finally at peace at home with God our Father. A prayer vigil service will be held on Sunday, October 29th, 2023, at Sacred Heart Church at 7:00pm. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, October 30th, at Sacred Heart Church at 11:00am. Sacred Heart Church is located at 3900 Arthur Drive in Delta, BC. To remember Jim, please wear a token of blue as it was his favourite colour. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of British Columbia (https://alzheimer.ca/bc/en) or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada (https://www.heartandstroke.ca)
