Remembrance Day underway as in previous years PHIL MELNYCHUK

p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Remembrance Day ceremonies will proceed in Delta this Nov. 11 as they always have with the customary remarks, reflection or prayers at the cenotaph as the living pay tribute to the fallen. New directions for public prayer or reflections that have been given for military events don’t apply to chaplains who preside at Remembrance Day ceremonies, said Bernadette Kudzin, constituency manager for Delta MP Carla Qualtrough. “That directive is only for military chaplains. These (Remembrance Day) are not military events, they’re hosted by the legion,” said Kudzin. As well, the Royal Canadian Legion has had no direction to change anything, she added. “It should have zero effect on what’s going on Remembrance Day because those are not military events,” Kudzin said, noting the new direction for military events doesn’t preclude praying, but just asks for a more inclusive approach. Al Ridgway, president of Ladner Legion Branch No. 61 said the Legion has its own chaplain to give reflections or prayers that are offered out of respect for those who served in the forces. “It’s not totally the religion, but it’s the idea that you’re remembering and thanking those people who

have served and those people who gave their lives for our country,” Ridgway added. “It doesn’t matter your race, your creed, your colour, your religion or anything. We’re all the same.” A direction issued in October to military chaplains by the Chaplain General for the Canadian Armed Forces notes that public prayer was used his-

torically at military events to commemorate major events. However, “we do not all pray in the same way; for some, prayer does not play a role in their lives,” Brig. Gen. Guy Belisle said in an Oct. 11 direction to Canadian Forces chaplains on spiritual reflection in public settings. “Therefore, it is essential for chaplains to adopt a sensitive and inclusive approach when publicly addressing military members.” The direction then only uses the term reflections and says that when a chaplain offers reflections at a public event, people are able to identify with what is being said. “Chaplains shall endeavour to ensure that all feel included and able to participate in the reflection with a clear conscience, no matter their beliefs,” the direction says. Chaplains “must carefully choose words that are inclusive,” when giving public reflections, said the direction. It adds that the direction follows a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision that set a “standard for religious neutrality,” by the state. The chaplain general’s direction was modified on Oct. 19, but only minor changes were made from the Oct. 11 version, said Kudzin. City of Delta already looking to change housing rules SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The City of Delta has already embarked on the road to introduce more housing choices on residential lots, even before the provincial government’s announcement last week on new legislation to deliver more small-scale, multi-unit housing. The province announced that historical zoning rules in many communities have led most new housing to be built mostly in the form of condos, or single-family homes that are out of reach for many people, leaving a shortage of options for the types of housing in between. Zoning barriers and layers of regulations have also slowed down the delivery of housing, making people go through long, complicated processes to build muchneeded housing in communities. The proposed legislation and regulations, among other things, will permit one secondary suite or one lane-

way home, also known as an accessory dwelling unit, in all communities. In most areas within municipalities of more than 5,000 people, the changes will also require bylaws to allow for three to four units on lots currently zoned for singlefamily or duplex use, depending on lot size, as well as six units permitted on larger lots currently zoned for singlefamily or duplex use and close to transit stops with frequent service. Municipalities covered by the legislation may permit additional density if desired but cannot have bylaws that allow for fewer permitted units than the provincial legislation. The proposed changes will also phase out one-off public hearings for rezonings for housing projects that are consistent and aligned with official community plans, a practice introduced by the City of Delta, which received a housing target mandate by the province, earlier this year. A recent planning depart-

Local neighbourhoods in Delta could start looking much different in a few years with new development opportunities previously not available. ment report outlines a number of initiatives underway, some part of Delta’s new Housing Action Plan, but also other recently introduced ideas, including permissions for accessory dwelling units.

Delta’s OCP and zoning bylaw allow for secondary suites, including suites in duplexes -- but generally do not allow other forms of accessory dwelling units, such as detached garden suites or

coach homes, except through rezoning and in most cases OCP amendments. The planning department will also introduce smallscale, multi-unit housing opportunities. That initiative involves promoting increased residential density and variety through small scale multi-unit housing and infill. Currently, Delta’s Official Community Plan and zoning bylaw generally limit choices to single detached homes, secondary suites, and in some cases coach homes or duplexes in areas designated and zoned for low-density residential development. “This initiative aligns with the province’s Small Scale Multi-Unit Housing initiative, which is anticipated to involve fall legislation requiring municipalities to allow three to four units on single detached lots,” said the report. “Further information is required on the details of the upcoming provincial legislation in order to fully advance the city’s response,” the report notes.

East Ladner townhouse proposal off to public hearing includes a proposed land exchange with the city to dedicate a parcel at the rear portion of 4726 and 4740 60B St. for park use - in exchange for acquiring city-owned land at the rear portion of 6100 Ladner Trunk Rd. for townhouses. That city parcel is currently part of the Holly Park Reserve, where a bike (BMX) pump track is located. The existing BMX pump track trails would be relocated to either an area to the east of the current location, or to a new area at Kensington Park. The cost to design and reinstate the pump trail tracks would be undertaken by Delta. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is currently in consultation with user groups and BC Hydro on a relocation plan.

A proposed townhouse development in east Ladner, that involves a land swap with the City of Delta, will go to a public hearing. Council on Monday granted first two readings for a rezoning and Official Community Plan amendment for the 56-unit application, located on 60B Street, near Holly Park. The proposal for 4726, 4740 and 4752 60B St. and 6100 Ladner Trunk Rd. includes the consolidation of three residential lots on 60B Street into one parcel. The residential units would be in 13 buildings. Vehicular and pedestrian access is proposed from 60B Street. The application also

related to the pump track area impacts, neighbourhood traffic impacts and the traffic study assessment methodology, the proposed increase in density and servicing infrastructure capacity.” The planning department also notes that the proposed development would be sited near other townhouse developments in the area along or near Ladner Trunk Road and utilize the same pedestrian, bus and vehicular access routes to nearby services and amenities. There are 47 trees on the subject site, all of which are proposed to be removed. There are also seven off-site trees and five municipal street trees, of which three municipal street trees are proposed to be removed. The public hearing date for the application has yet to be announced.

SANDOR GYARMATI PHOTO

The planning department says the proposed townhouses ‘would represent a new housing choice relative to single detached residential development in the area.’ Meanwhile, the realigned park boundary would provide space to accommodate a potential field expansion, according to the report, adding that the developer proposes to provide a $500,000 amenity contribution to assist with future

park upgrades. The report also notes that during public consultations, support was expressed for redevelopment of the site, which would increase townhouse unit supply and housing choice. However, “significant opposition was expressed

Southpointe Academy plans eight-storey expansion SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta council on Monday agreed to a development variance that would pave the way for a major expansion of Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen. The application by the Tsawwassen Independent School Society will see the addition of a second building to the east of the existing private school building on 56th Street. Consistent with the Official Community Plan, the application would see the addition constructed on top of a parking area. The new building would be eight-storeys high, including six floors of classrooms, a mez-

zanine and a rooftop mechanical room. The building would contain 74,917 sq. ft. of floor area providing 39 classrooms, a gymnasium and administrative space. A development variance permit is required to increase the height and to decrease the interior side setback and bicycle parking requirements. The development would allow enrolment to grow from the current 663 to 858 students. A planning report notes the owner has submitted a traffic study. The study identified that there is existing queuing along 19th Avenue during the morning. The proposed development is expected to generate 209 new vehicle

trips in the morning peak hours and 159 new trips in the afternoon. The assessment recommends the city monitor the intersection of 19th Avenue and 56th Street for queuing length and consider lengthening the southbound left turn lane, if required. However, no intersection improvements are currently recommended. The report also notes that the owner has provided a pick-up and drop-off strategy to address queuing during the morning period. The property is located in a Streamside Protection and Enhancement Area Development Permit Area, so a special permit by the city is required.

Tsawwassen senior found deceased in Point Roberts PHIL MELNYCHUK p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A Tsawwassen man who never returned from a walk on Wednesday, Nov. 1, has been found deceased in Point Roberts. David Ho, 86, left his home at about 3 p.m., for a walk around Diefenbaker Park, near the U.S. border, on 56th Street. He walked in the area regularly, but didn’t come home after his usual 45 minute excursion. Delta Police, along with South Fraser Search and Rescue, searched throughout the night. Later, video was located that recorded Ho walking along Marine Drive in Point Roberts, at about 5 p.m., the day he went missing. Once American authorities were alerted, the fire department, sheriff’s office and Point Roberts volunteers joined in the search. According to A/Insp. James Sandberg, spokesperson for Delta Police, Ho was found close to the location where he was seen on video. Christopher Carleton, fire chief with Whatcom County Fire District 5, said a member of one of

the search teams found Ho late Saturday morning in the northwest part of Point Roberts. Being able to locate Mr. Ho and to bring him back to his family meant a lot to the searchers, he added. On Sunday, about 125 people gathered at the Point Roberts fire hall to support each other. “Yesterday (Sunday) was time for closure and to acknowledge all of their work,” Carleton said. “I can’t say enough about the cooperation we had with our unified command here.” At one point on Friday, about 90 people were involved in the search, with about a quarter of that from Tsawwassen. Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue teams from Whatcom and Skagit counties, a canine unit, Customs and Border Protection, a helicopter, multiple drones, one brought by Bellingham Police Department, and a horseback team, were all involved. “With everything going on in the world, there is still humanity,” Carleton said, adding that a couple hundred strangers came

together to search for someone they didn’t know. “Ultimately, we were able to find him and bring him home to his family.” The Ho family issued a statement thanking Delta Police and Whatcom County Fire District 5, “for all their hard work helping to find our dad,” and expressing gratitude to search and rescue teams and volunteers in Tsawwassen and Point Roberts. “We would also like to acknowledge Dr. S. Noble who has been very helpful and supportive. In addition, much appreciation to all the neighbours and friends dad met during his many walks,” the family said. Donations to Whatcom County Fire District 5 would be appreciated, the statement concluded. “In this difficult time, our hearts go out to David’s family, friends and the compassionate communities of Tsawwassen and Point Roberts who demonstrated extraordinary care and engagement throughout the search for David. The support and kindness have been remarkable,” DPD said.

Hwy. 17A overpass repairs beginning this month PHIL MELNYCHUK

p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Work is underway to fix Hwy. 17A overpass after it was badly damaged July 18 when an over height truck smashed into it. But motorists may have to navigate a few detours in order to wend their way around the work that begins today (Thursday) and which could last a couple of months. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said on Tuesday there will be possible single-lane closures, nightly on Hwy. 99. As well, Hwy. 99, southbound, will be fully closed from Friday, Nov. 17 at 9 p.m. — through to Sunday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. That will require motorists southbound on Hwy. 99, to detour south on to Hwy. 17A to Ladner Trunk Road and then rejoin Hwy. 99 at the Mathews interchange. As well, during construction, motorists still will be able to drive northbound on the Hwy. 17A overpass,

across Hwy. 99. However, there will be no southbound traffic on the overpass for the duration of the project. Instead, motorists coming from northern Delta will have to drive through the Massey Tunnel to the Steveston Road interchange in Richmond, then loop around and back on to Hwy. 99 so they can continue southbound through the tunnel towards Delta. According to a ministry release on Tuesday, repairs to the crossing will be “extensive, involving demolition and girder installation.” That could take eight weeks, depending on weather. The cost to repair the bridge is about $1.4 million. The structure was damaged when a big truck, southbound on Hwy. 99, smashed into the underside of the overpass. Two of the five girders of the overpass, built in 1959, will need significant repairs. During 2022, and up until June 14 of this year, 19 commercial trucks have crashed into highway overpasses, most of those in the Lower Mainland.

OPINION Thank you for caring

Guest columnist

D

JAMES SANDBERG

uring the past week, Delta experienced a heartbreaking conclusion to a highly publicized search for a missing elderly resident. The terms “tragic” and “sad” seem inadequate in expressing the sorrow felt by the Delta Police Department, which extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the communities of Delta and Point Roberts. I intentionally mention “the communities of Delta and Point Roberts” because of the immense display of concern, widespread public engagement in locating the man, and the extraordinary efforts of numerous individuals — sharing information, offering tips, tirelessly searching, and suggesting investigative methods — proved incredibly inspiring. The extent of compassion exhibited can be gauged by the numerous strangers who took to social media to offer condolences to the grieving family. Upon reflection, the fundamental reason appears clear: people genuinely care. Whatcom County Deputy Sheriff Ben Wood echoed this sentiment, expressing, “I’ve never seen the community response I saw for this case in all my 21 years of service.” We are undeniably part of remarkable communities, where amidst tragedy, humanity emerged. The impact of this event touched so many different people who responded to an inherent call to act, and when the distressing outcome was revealed, community members collectively felt a profound sense of loss. This loss spurred them to share their personal emotions with strangers in an attempt to both mourn and help others grieve. To the family, we offer our heartfelt condolences. We too feel a loss, and we stand beside you in grief. Be assured that your husband/ father brought Delta and Point Roberts together in an unprecedented manner, instilling a sense of pride in their communities among many. To the people of Delta and Point Roberts, thank you for your care and compassion. Thank you for your help. Be proud of your efforts. You are amazing communities. -A/Insp. We need a law to protect wearing a Poppy?

I

couldn’t believe the headline… ‘Sask government poppy protection bill passes.’ Apparently, some companies – and even government agencies – had asked people to not wear a Poppy at work. The concern? If you allow this “cause” there will be demand for others. There were also health and safety issues. Seriously? The Poppy is not a cause – it’s a sign of respect and appreciation for those who have and continue to serve our country and for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in that service. It’s not a disease, it’s not a movement, it’s not an ideology, and to lump it in with those issues makes no sense to me. Ask a soldier, and they will say that’s what they fought for – the freedom to live your life as you want. They kept

evil away so you can have the freedoms you do. And for a short two-week period, we display that appreciation. Worried about the pin? Take precautions, but don’t ban it. The owie you’ll get from the pinprick is nothing compared to what a soldier went through for you. This isn’t new. Air Canada made a similar decision in 2016 that was quickly reversed. And Canada is in

their name! I don’t know what people are thinking when they come up with this stuff. I heard a comedian once say that when men turn 50 they become obsessed with the Second World War. I must admit, I’ve watched more than my share of documentaries and films in the past few years. The sacrifice these brave people went through was incredible. If we forget the past, we are doomed to repeat it. Sorry, I’ll be wearing my Poppy proudly and with deep respect. Lest we forget. A new bridge will not solve our problems Editor: Re: Transit and travel woes continue to frustrate (Optimist, editorial, Oct. 16) I have read scores of letters moaning about the eight-lane tunnel or 10-lane bridge and somehow that will solve all our problems. Short answer, it won’t! All a bridge or tunnel will do is move gridlock a few km into Richmond, creating gridlock chaos on a larger scale. The big problem is limited access to Vancouver, with only sixlanes of traffic going into the city. The more traffic

dumped into Richmond will only cause greater congestion at the bridges. There are no plans for new crossings into Vancouver. The Gordon Campbell photo-op, showcase P-3 Canada Line was so constructed that it has limited capacity (40m long station platforms, accommodating 41m long trains) that over $2 billion must be spent before a new metre of track is built. TransLink, our undemocratic and bumbling bureaucracy, could solve some of the issues, but operating a user-friendly

transit service is beyond them. I don’t know why they hired an expensive American “spin doctor” as CEO to massage public opinion. Those who complain about gridlock today, will have apoplexy in the future as gridlock on Hwy. 99 will be endemic after a new bridge or tunnel is built. The lesson is simple: You cannot solve complex transit issues, with simplistic bridge or tunnel solutions, which, in a short time, will make today’s congestion, seem like child’s play in the future! D. M. Johnston

Editor: Re: Stop theft of CPP premiums (Optimist, letters, Oct. 26) My brother too was single and had no dependents, however, he did have the good fortune of collecting CPP for a few years before he

Various South Delta restaurants will once again come together this month to make a fundraising impact to fight Pancreatic cancer. In the past four years Tsawwassen White Spot, Ladner Dairy Queen, Ladner and Tsawwassen McDonalds and Ladner and Tsawwassen Chopped Leaf have all donated 10 percent of daily sales on their specified day. In addition, Ladner Dairy Queen makes firefighter cakes in the week leading up to Dairy Queen’s day with 100 per cent of proceeds going to Pancreatic cancer. Purple paper ribbons are also sold for donation and posted up in the res-

taurants. The fundraising event starts with McDonalds on Thursday, Nov. 16, which is World Pancreatic Cancer Day, followed by Ladner DQ on Nov. 17, White Spot on Nov. 18 and the two Chopped Leaf locations on Nov. 19. The initiative was launched in 2019 in honour of Ladner resident and Delta firefighter Thomas Haydon who lost his battle to Pancreatic Neuroendocrine cancer in 2018 at the age of 36. Last year the City of Delta unveiled a tribute to Haydon inside the Ladner Leisure Centre where he spent much of his life playing and coaching lacrosse, including being the firstever captain of the Delta Junior “A” Islanders.

South Delta Drum Festival showcases B.C. talent The fifth annual South Delta Drum Festival is set for Sunday, Nov. 19 at Genesis Theatre in Ladner. The festival will feature fantastic local drumming talent while enhancing music education in the Lower Mainland. Rather than a usual concert, clinicians will perform, then pause and explain what they’re doing. It’s about developing percussion understanding and expertise, as well as a chance to learn from people who have been in the field for many years. Featured clinicians include: Matthew Atkins, Ash Pearson and Rick Klemm. Klemm has organized the drum festival for years, but has been asked to participate in an additional role as a clinician this year. He also makes Klemm Drums and annually donates one of his snare drums for a fundraising raffle. Delta Secondary music teacher Catherine Campbell said students will be working the concession, handling lighting and stage set-up as well as attending to learn more about

drums. “Lots of students will be supporting the event,” she said. “It’s not just percussion students who can appreciate this day. It’s starting to get around to other students and schools who want to come together as a community and experience other musical disciplines.” Campbell has appreciated the fundraising efforts of this event. Net proceeds from ticket sales and all money raised from raffle tickets go to the Delta Secondary band and music program. “Things we spend the money on are instrument repairs, instrument supplies, new music and bringing in expert clinicians,” she explained. “It has been helpful in past years to have this source of support.” Thanks to the generosity of numerous sponsors there will be many door prizes. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be bought at the door and online at: https://SDDF23.brownpapertickets.com. -Mika Sato

Cheers for Fears a huge success A night of spooky fun, great costumes and community support for KinVillage resulted in a very successful second annual Cheers for Fears fundraiser on Oct. 28. The South Delta Community Impact Committee (SDCIC) organized this Halloween charity event, which committed to donating 100 per cent of its proceeds towards the redevelopment and expansion of

the KinVillage’s Enhanced Day Program for Older Adults. The SDCIC, comprised of dedicated members including Whitney Saip Dyck, Warren Dean Flandez, Courtney Keith, Shaemas Lal, Jubail Sanchez, along side Kristen Thomas, KinVillage’s Director of Development. Cheers for Fears was conceived by the SDCIC to engage South Delta’s

early millennials and challenge the stereotypes surrounding senior care. It emphasized the significance of providing direct support to elderly members of the community. “We are immensely thankful for organizations like the South Delta Community Impact Committee, which are backing this much-needed redevelopment project and contributing to the well-being of our current

and future residents,” said KinVillage CEO Dan Levitt. “In just two years, Cheers for Fears has raised over $30,000 to fund essential services for older adults.” Cheers for Fears transformed the typical fundraising experience, encouraging guests to don spooky costumes while indulging in draft beer, wine, coolers, gourmet canapés by Chef Adrian of Buenos Dias Café, and

Ladner Legion hosting annual ceremony MIKE SU

Ladner will be anticipating more participants than ever before for this year’s Remembrance Day ceremony. Al Ridgway, president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 61, said organizing a larger event is much less complicated now that the COVID-19 restrictions have eased off. “We are such a closely, tight-knit community that everybody likes to participate and remember those who have fallen and given their lives for all of us to be where we’re at,” Ridgway said. Ladner’s Legion branch recently celebrated its 95th anniversary, and it has the largest

membership in its history this year, with close to 1,200 members. Meanwhile, three cadet squadrons have also confirmed a full group for each to participate in the parade. The parade will be forming on Delta St. outside the Legion, with the Legion colour party leading off at 10:30 a.m. and the Delta Police Pipe Band following right behind. The Cadet squadrons will march behind the participating veterans, followed by Scouts, Brownies, Girl Guide groups, Cubs and school kindergarten classes. Delta Police, Delta Fire and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue will also join in. The parade will march down Delta

St. to the cenotaph at Memorial Park for the Remembrance Day Ceremony. However, due to the ongoing installation of new washrooms in Memorial Park, the stage and the choir group will have to move closer to the baseball field. The City of Delta will provide additional washrooms and cleaning facilities for the event. The parade will return to the Legion around noon for a small gathering with the pipe band, as well as speeches from Mayor George Harvie, MP Carla Qualtrough, MLA Ian Paton, and other dignitaries. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be provided. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join.

Ladner Legion marks its 95th anniversary The Ladner Legion recently marked its 95th anniversary with a celebratory dinner at the Legion on Oct. 22. In another event held last month several members were honoured for their service. Ron Erickson (55 years), Harold Howe (50 years), Gerry Bramhill (55 years) and Ian Estabrooks (50 years) represent 210 years of service to the Legion executive. Jacky Hillairet received a life membership. She has been the branch manager at Ladner Legion No. 61 for many years and is retiring. In addition to

her job as branch manager she has been an invaluable volunteer for the Legion and intends to carry on in that capacity. At the Oct. 22 dinner, greetings were brought by Delta Mayor George Harvie and council and well as Delta MP Carla Qualtrough. Entertainment was provided by the Delta Police Pipe Band. The Ladner Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion was chartered on March 21 1928 and was originally known as the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League. In 1960. the Legion was renamed the Royal

and was located where the Community Centre is now situated. At that time the building housed the

“Dugout” a serviceman’s canteen, which was established for the benefit of members of the armed forces stationed in the area. When it finally closed its doors, an estimated 50,000 armed forces personnel had passed through those portals. Also, about this time a bowling alley was purchased and moved to a building, which had been erected adjoining the high school. The Branch’s main form of income was from this bowling alley. In the 1950’s, the Branch received its liquor license and was moved to the foot of Delta Street in the heart

of Ladner Village. The year 1970 brought about a third move to the current location on Delta Street. Branch 61 is the third owner of this building, constructed in 1922 for the Bank of Montreal and later to become the BC Government liquor store. In recent yeas the Legion has provided bursaries to local scholars, supported seniors and minor sports teams, cadets and other youth groups. The supply of Christmas hampers for the needy has been a seasonal project, as well as many other community endeavours. -Submitted by Ladner Legion

Interact students reflect upon cross installation with gratitude The Crosses of Remembrance returned to South Delta last week as 41 crosses were installed by South Delta Secondary School Interact Club members in the field near the South Delta Recreation Centre on 56th Street in Tsawwassen. Each cross bears the name of a Delta veteran who died in the First and Second World Wars, the Second South African (Boer) War and Afghanistan. “These crosses represent the many heroic lives that were sacrificed in the process of protecting our country and providing peace for

the future generations,” said Interact co-chair Amy Yang. “Seeing them standing across the field, glistening under the sun, we once again commemorate the fallen soldiers and honor the veterans for their immense bravery and selflessness. Moreover, we feel deeply grateful and indebted for the conditions that we live in now - a safe community full of wonderful people.” Co-chair Eileen Cai echoed similar gratitude for the meaningful project. “On behalf of the South Delta Secondary Interact Club, we feel deeply grateful to col-

laborate with the Tsawwassen Rotary Club in setting up these crosses each year,” said Cai. “It can sometimes be easy to overlook our good fortune in living securely in Canada, therefore, this act of placing the crosses grants us, as students, an important opportunity to commemorate and reflect on the countless sacrifices made for our peace and freedom. It holds special significance for us to unite in upholding such traditions.” Rick Lewall, Rotary Club of Tsawwassen’s Interact Liaison and long-time champion of the Interact program was supporting the instal-

From the last Friday in October to Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed. The red flower also is the symbol of the Legion’s Poppy Campaign, raising funds to support Veterans and their families in need. The Legion’s lapel Poppy is a sacred symbol of Remembrance and should not be affixed with a pin that obstructs the Poppy. The Poppy should be worn on the left side, over the heart.

In Flanders Fields is a poem written during the First World War by Canadian LieutenantColonel John McCrae after he presided over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier. So many years later, his poem continues to poignantly express the tragedy of the losses of war. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the

guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. -Courtesy Royal Canadian Legion website

A history of service

Canadian Veterans have served throughout history in a broad range of conflicts and situations – from world wars to peacekeeping missions to crises on the home front. The Royal Canadian Legion is committed to honouring and remembering all veterans, whether they served in theatre or on Canadian soil, whether they kept the peace or fought for peace, whether they found themselves in combat or in support of operations. Fighting for freedom The Legion honours and supports Veterans of Canada from all wars – recent and past. Afghanistan War 2001 - 2014 Korean War 1950 - 1953

First World War 1914 - 1918 Persian Gulf War 1990 - 1991 Second World War 1939 - 1945 South African War 1899 - 1902 Peacekeeping Canadian veterans have protected the rights and freedoms of Canadians and people from countries all over the world through peacekeeping missions. The Legion supports veterans of missions including Lebanon, Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Haiti, Sudan, and others. On the home front Many Canadian veterans have played a critical role in protecting Canadians on the homefront – whether from fires,

floods and other threats, these men and women have risked their lives for our safety and protection. Honouring Canada’s Veterans The Legion acknowledges the end of conflicts and does not commemorate the start of conflicts. The most sacred day of Remembrance is Remembrance Day. Every year, on Nov. 11, the Legion recognizes all of Canada’s Veterans, serving and retired, and commemorates our Fallen, including the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, Peace Officers, Merchant Navy, and Reserves. On that day, we also honour the families and their losses. -Royal Canadian Legion

The lasting legacy of Canadian war amputee veterans Amid the wars, countless Canadian soldiers and nurses displayed extraordinary bravery and unwavering dedication, putting their lives on the line for our country. Many of these individuals returned home bearing the profound physical and emotional scars of war, having lost limbs in the line of duty. Their experiences as amputees not only shaped their own lives but, as members of The War Amps of Canada, they left a lasting legacy on generations of amputees to come. During the First World War, Madeleine Jaffray (1889-1972), served as

a nurse in a military hospital near Bordeaux, France. The hospital where she was working was bombarded by German aviators, and she was wounded in the foot by a piece of shrapnel from one of the bombs. Her injury led to an amputation, making her Canada’s only female war amputee of the First World War. It was amputees like Jaffray who welcomed the new contingent of amputee veterans following the Second World War, sharing with them all that they had learned. One of these was Mike Krulicki (1925-2020), who was just a teenager when

Madeleine Jaffray (First World War), Mike Krulicki (Second World War), Arthur Johnson (Korean War). he volunteered for service in the Second World War. He enlisted with the Irish Regiment of Canada, and in 1944, while fighting in the Italian Campaign as part of the attack on the Gothic Line, he stepped on a landmine and lost

his right leg below the knee. Another veteran was Arthur Johnson (19292006), who served with the Canadian Army Special Force as a mortar man with the Royal Canadian Regiment and

who joined 26,000 other Canadians in the fight for the freedom of South Korea. In August 1952, he found himself on Hill 355 near Seoul in the midst of intense enemy shelling. A mortar landed close by, wounding him and resulting in the loss of his right leg above the knee and damage to his right arm. United by the common bond of amputation, amputees from the First World War, along with those from the Second World War and Korean War, were instrumental in pushing for advancements in prosthetic technology, confronting the stigma of disability,

advocating for fair pensions for veterans and providing much-needed support to each other. Rob Larman, a Senior Advisor at The War Amps and a leg amputee himself, said, “These honourable individuals contributed their time to various activities of the Association and shared their experiences as amputees with others, including modern-day veterans and children. On Remembrance Day especially, but also throughout the year, we pay tribute to the sacrifice and service of all those who served and continue to serve.” -Submitted by The War Amps

The courage of young women and men On Remembrance Day, look at the old veterans gathered at your local cenotaph, standing proudly, or seated with a warm blanket on their lap. Try to imagine what they experienced many decades ago when they were young, and the world was at war. The great invasion to kick the Nazis out of France took place on June 6, 1944. The largest allied armada of war ships readied for the battle of Normandy. Those onboard would face an array of deadly obstacles; barbed wire, mines, and heavy concrete fortifications containing cannons and machine guns. This was the beginning of the end of Nazi Germany’s grip on Western Europe.

Many years of preparation took place to get the allies ready for this day. Canada was already fighting in Italy, slowly pushing their way up the Italian boot. What had been called the soft underbelly of Europe was instead a meat grinder where battles like Ortona were hard won by the men of Vancouver’s famed Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, Alberta’s Loyal Edmonton Regiment, and Quebec’s Three Rivers Regiment. The D-day landings on the French coast and subsequent liberation campaign, saw Canada fighting against an experienced and ruthless enemy. With every footstep taken, soldiers died and many more suffered injuries, and for some, their injuries

would remain with them for their entire lives. The D-day landings itself cost our nation 359 war dead. The government of France would like to pay tribute to all living Canadian veterans who participated in the D-day landings, Dieppe raid or campaign to liberate France in 1944. If you were in the Canadian army, navy, air force or merchant navy, you may be eligible to receive France’s highest award, the National Order of the Legion of Honour. If you would like more information, please send an email to Korea19501953@yahoo. com The subject line should say Veteran. -Guy Black, Recipient, Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation

100-year-old veteran remembers the fallen

I lost my right arm on Oct. 18, 1944, while serving with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in Italy. I was staked at a farmhouse that had a children’s treehouse located nearby. In the treehouse was a sniper who kept shooting at our boys. A tank then came, which shot out shells, the shrapnel hitting my right arm. When I returned home from the war, I joined The War Amps and have been a member ever since. This Association was started by First World War amputee veterans to help each other adapt to their new reality as amputees.

Having just recently turned 100, I am reflecting this Remembrance Day upon all those who served in my regiment and never returned home. Their absence

weighs on me and it is essential that we keep their memory alive. I take comfort in knowing that The War Amps and its young members will continue to keep spreading the message long into the future. The sacrifices of those who served (and continue to serve) deserve to be remembered and honoured. Each Remembrance Day serves as a poignant reminder of the tremendous price paid by these brave individuals. Their selflessness and courage continue to resonate, and it is our duty to ensure that their legacy endures. - Lloyd Brown/ Member of The War Amps

Through these initiatives, we honour and remember Canada’s fallen Veterans and help ensure Canadians never forget. A South Delta mom wants to know if a popular park will ever see a full playground restored after equipment was hauled away from the old Delta Manor elementary school grounds on 57th Street. The playground equipment was removed in August. “Now it’s gone and everybody’s pretty sad about it,” said Mercedes King who lives nearby, adding the kids nearby now have to cross busy streets to get to another playground. “It’s a park that’s real-

ly well loved and used a lot and now of course … they don’t plan to put anything else in there,” as far as a school is concerned, King said recently. A zipline, a bridge and monkey bars were all dismantled and hauled away, including the wood chips. “So they’ll just be swings left, basically,” King said. She contacted Delta school district and was told there are no plans to replace the equipment because it’s no longer a location for an active school. School district com-

munications director Cathryn Tucker said that Delta Manor elementary closed in 2009, and is now used to house the Delta Manor Education Centre, learning services staff and the Delta Film Academy as well as a daycare, also confirming that the equipment was removed in late summer after which it will be reinstalled at Hawthorne elementary, also in Ladner, where it will be used by more students. However, some playground equipment, such as two sets of swings and a climbing bar remains at the site.

Home interiors can be spruced up in a number of ways. Ideas run the gamut from relatively inexpensive changes in paint colour to more extensive (and expensive) remodels that may include demolition and reconstruction. Investing in new home decor is another way to breathe new life into spaces, and this approach that falls somewhere in the middle in regards to cost. Material and product costs remain high across the board, so individuals interested in changing the furniture and other design elements in their homes might be seeking ways to do so in the most affordable way possible. In such instances, homeowners can try these

budget-friendly ways to overhaul their home decor. *Create the illusion of more space: Light, bright and white are key attributes to remember when selecting design elements for rooms where you want to create the illusion of more square footage. Painting the walls in very light colours, increasing natural and artificial light, including using well-placed mirrors to reflect light, and decorating with light-colored fabrics can help a space seem more roomy. *Replace the accessories: Replacing curtains, area rugs, throw pillows, and chair cushions is an easy way to change a room without a big investment. Consider updating some wall art

and tying colour schemes together with all of the newly introduced elements. *Splurge on statement pieces that will be used frequently: These may include chandeliers, unique rugs or an eyecatching piece of furniture. *Shop “discount” stores for furniture and accents: Traditional design centres can be great places to find plenty of high-quality merchandise. However, don’t overlook local discount or close-out centres that may have items at very reasonable costs. Shop the high-end stores for inspiration, then try to find “dupes” in the discount stores that will mimic the looks for less. -Metro Creative

Design ideas that can create a peaceful feel Homes are often characterized as sanctuaries for their residents. A calm place to come home to after a busy day at work or school is often just what people need to unwind. Certain design components can help individuals turn their homes into relaxing respites from the daily grind. With that goal in mind, individuals can consider these ideas to create a peaceful feel inside their homes. *Paint with neutral colours: Wall colours can define the mood in a given room, and neutral colors have long been linked to a calming effect. Subtle shades like beige, taupe and light grey are known to create

a relaxed vibe in a room, so these colours can be a go-to choice. Some people consider neutral colours a tad boring, so individuals concerned by that impression can limit neutral colours to rooms designated as sanctuaries, like a reading room, a spa bathroom or a bedroom. *Employ natural light: Natural light also can help to establish a serene setting at home. Large windows that let daylight in can improve anyone’s mood. A 2022 study from researchers at the University of Chile in Santiago found that the more natural light that entered a home, the happier people said they felt. Study authors even noted

that the largest uptick in well-being was found among participants who lived in homes in which windows covered at least 40 percent of the dwelling’s wall space. Opening blinds or curtains and, if possible, installing larger windows in a home can help to establish the relaxing, happy vibe individuals are aiming for. *Utilize plants to set a peaceful tone: The United Kingdom-based Royal Horticultural Society notes that research has found that indoor plants can benefit psychological wellbeing. The RHS notes that improved mood and reduced stress levels are two benefits that indoor plants can provide. A

good mood and less stress can help individuals establish the peaceful feel they’re aiming for at home. *Keep devices out of bedrooms: Watching television while lying in bed, scanning a smartphone before turning off a nightstand light and retiring for the night, or reading an e-reader instead of a print book at night can transform a bedroom from a serene setting into one that’s overrun with stimuli. According to the Sleep Foundation, technology stimulates the mind, which can make it harder to fall asleep. In addition, blue light emitted by devices disrupts the natural production of

That can negate any efforts individuals have undertaken to make their bedrooms as peaceful as possible. Designate bedrooms in the house as technology-free zones to ensure the peaceful vibe continues uninter-

rupted until everyone goes to bed. A peaceful home makes for the perfect respite at the end of a busy day. Various design choices can help individuals establish a serene vibe throughout their homes. -Metro Creative

Wood floors are coveted for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their aesthetic appeal. Many people prefer wood flooring because dust and dirt do not become trapped as they would in carpet fibers, seemingly making wood flooring easy to clean. Most floors endure a lot of wear and tear. However, with care, wood flooring may last for decades. Part of that care includes understanding how to properly clean and maintain wood floors so they look their best. The following are some steps for keeping wood floors as pristine as possible. *Remove shoes: It’s a good idea to remove shoes, particularly heels,

penny.vanhorn@stor-x.com

when walking on wood floors. Sharp heels, cleats and other shoes can scratch or dent wood flooring. All shoes can track in excess dirt, which can contribute to a lack of luster as well. *Sweep or vacuum frequently: The experts at The Spruce suggest sweeping, vacuuming or dust mopping wood floors daily. Dirt and dust make floors more slippery, and dirt or sand particles can lead to scratches on the floor. *Learn your flooring type: Wood flooring is broken down into three main categories: solid hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood flooring and laminate wood flooring. Traditional hardwood is made of planks or strips of any

hardwood covered in a wood stain. Engineered flooring is manufactured by gluing together several thin plies of hardwood. Laminate flooring looks like wood but generally is a veneer or a photographic image of wood covered by a thick layer of melamine resin over fiberboard. *Damp is better than wet: When cleaning wood flooring, use a damp rather than a soaking wet mop. Better Homes & Gardens says standing water can damage wood surfaces. *Use the hard floor setting: When vacuuming, adjust the vacuum to a hard flooring setting, which will not engage the brush rollers on the vacuum head. -Metro Creative

Tsawwassen player selected to Whitecaps FC program Where South Delta United has become known for its unique pathway for goalkeepers in recent years, leaning heavily on the principle of learning the skills important for all players, then specializing later through renowned club goalkeeper coach Helmut Wiebe, the local club can now boast its first nongoalkeeper to enter the prestigious Whitecaps Academy since the inception of the club in 2016. Charlie Rogers, 14, has become one of 20 players in his age group from across the country to enter the fully funded Academy system with the Caps, after earning a spot through his performances with his BCSPL club side, Coastal FC, and the BC Provincial Team, where he captained both sides. The South Delta Secondary student has re-located to University Hill High School out at UBC, for training at the National Soccer Development Centre. This makes three players from the same group that started out who have now progressed to the youth level within the local professional club. The group, including standout goalkeepers Trystan Read (2007)

and Sam Rogers (2009), originally began with the Tsawwassen Soccer Club Academy (later South Delta United Academy) training and playing together on Monday nights with guidance from long-time club coaches Doug Dyck, Tom Huggon, Stuart Neely, and Mike Frank amongst others. “I was lucky to have great coaching and teammates here in South Delta and Tsawwassen to learn from before I had to move on to BCSPL at Coastal,” said Rogers. The process to enter a professional youth club academy in Canada is a competitive one. With three MLS clubs running teams at the U15 to U19 age groups, that leaves space for roughly 60 to 70 kids per age group across the country. “There are a lot of good players out there and it just depends on what the club and coaches are looking for,” said Rogers. “I’m glad they saw something in me that they value, and I did well when invited out.” A typical week will consist of local training four to five times per week along with travel and matches mixed in. Although his ultimate goal is to play as a profes-

Sun Devils win Delta championship IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A furious comeback and a late second touchdown were just some of the highlights in a wild battle for senior boys’ football supremacy in Delta last Friday night at John Oliver Park. The South Delta Sun Devils jumped out to a 29-12 lead after three quarters, but the Seaquam Seahawks scored three unanswered, unconverted TDs to take a 30-29 lead. The Sun Devils got the ball back and attempted a 37-yard FG with 1:50 to go in the game, but missed. South Delta used their two remaining time-outs and a strong defensive stop to get the ball back with 45 seconds to go. A couple of plays and a late

hit penalty got the Sun Devils to the Seahawks 16-yard line with 30 seconds left. South Delta went for a run to centre the ball for an attempted game-winning field goal when Ryan Roberts found a seam and scored his fourth TD of the game to put South Delta up 35-30 securing the win. Roberts finished the game with 186 yards rushing on 20-attempts including a 60-yard TD in the first, a oneyard run in the first and a sixyard run in the third. Quarterback Dominic Dumas went 8 for 18 for 168yards passing and one TD. He also rushed for 45 yards. Quinn Sjoberg had 72-yards receiving, while Morgan MacCubbin had 41 yards receiving and caught one TD. Oskar McPhie also had a nice game with 42 receiving yards.

JIM KINNEAR PHOTO

The South Delta Sun Devils pulled out a thrilling 35-30 win over Seaquam last Friday (Nov. 3) night at John Oliver Park. The two teams will battle again in the first round of the playoffs on Friday. With the South Delta win and St. Thomas More beating New West it created a four-way tie in the division with all four teams at 4-2 in conference

play. The playoffs will see seedings one through 16, with the top three teams, Vancouver College, Carson Graham

and GW Graham receiving first-round byes. Teams four through 16 will play this week. Seaquam, STM, New West and SDSS have been seeded seven through 10, meaning SDSS and Seaquam will play again this week. “It’s a very confusing and disappointing playoff schedule,” said head coach Ray Moon. “To place whole conferences together in the seeding without any mix and match is really odd and frustrating. There is no rhyme or reason to it, and no one will explain how they came to these conclusions. “We threw everything at Seaquam last Friday night, so it’s going to be another battle just seven days later.” The wild card round playoff game is this Friday (Nov. 10) at 1 p.m. at Burnaby Lakes.

Junior Varsity Sun Devils complete 8-1 season IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The Junior Varsity Sun Devils competed an impressive 8-1 season (4-1 in conference play) with a 34-13 win over the Seaquam Seahawks on Wednesday, night Nov. 1 at John Oliver Park. But the Sun Devils are not done by any means, as they have higher goals to achieve when the playoffs start with their opening round game on Nov. 9 against Rutland Secondary. A game time and venue is still to be determined. “This was a great game for us in that everyone on the roster got in for quite

a few plays,” said head coach Scott Martens. “We also avoided any significant injuries heading towards the playoffs, which is certainly a good thing.” The Sun Devils scored early and often against Seaquam opening up a 27-0 lead by half-time. Miles Crowle scored his first TD of the season on a nice 23-yard pass from Quinn Sjoberg. Damian Dumas scored on a 54-yard run and Hudson Robinson scored for the first time this season as well off a four-yard pass from Rylan Chima. Jarred Brown finished the first-half scoring catching a one-yard TD pass from Chima.

Seaquam scored a TD in the third and early in the fourth to cut the deficit to 27-13, but Sjoberg completed the scoring catching a 13-yard pass from Dumas. “I think top to bottom our conference was the toughest and I think that will bode well for us moving forward in the playoffs,” said Martens, adding he has not seen too much film yet on Rutland. “I think it’s going to be a favourable match-up for us, but in saying that, we will not take anything for granted. We will prepare as we always do – watch lots of film and treat them like they are the toughest team in the league.”

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

OBITUARIES

BIDEN, Morley Charles July 10, 1939 - October 6, 2023 Morley “Moe” Biden, born in Regina, Saskatchewan July 10, 1939, to Charlie and Margaret (Lindsay) Biden, was the third of three children. Morley met his wife Eileen Pinter and started a family in Regina, SK; they celebrated their 62nd anniversary prior to Morley’s passing. The couple enjoyed visiting Eileen’s family in Kisbey and Kipling, SK and had a vibrant social life in SK and BC. In the 1980’s, the family moved to Federal Way, WA. Morley and Eileen were the parents of four children. The activities and interests of their children often filled their calendars, including boxing, baseball, hockey, softball, and DeMolay. The family shared many good times together, including family camping in Kelowna, BC and then later at Baker Lake in Washington State. Morley was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Ralf Biden and Frances Biden. He is survived by his wife Eileen Biden (Pinter) and his children, Lance (Kim Greene), Rick (Kara Wood), Kent (Michelle Finnvik), Cara Biden (Toni Baumann). He enjoyed spending time with grandchildren Dustin, Courtney, Brandon (Natasha), Haley (Ryan), Jack (Sim), Rachel, Olivia and Alexandra, in addition to two great-grandchildren Darwin and River.

BROWN, Ken (Santa) August 11, 1934 - October 18, 2023 With broken hearts, we announce the passing of the most amazing man who lived the most amazing life. Laughing and loving right until the end, he leaves behind his most valued accomplishment in life, his family - The love of his life, Sheila (his Mrs. Claus). Daughters Debbie (Vivert), Cindy (Bob) and son Rick (Donna). Grandchildren Steph (Chris), Dan (Kim), Justin (Kelsea), Amanda (Micah), Carly (Derek), Mitch, Chelsey and Dayna. Great Grandchildren Mya, Grace, Everleigh, Emma, Sophia, Ayva, Bo, Addy and Mila. Life without you will never be the same, but we will forever cherish the gifts you gave us all.

Morley was talented and industrious - over the years he made successful living as a plumber, a sales leader, and an entrepreneur. Morley and Eileen ran their own business for over 20 years. Morley retired often - after investigating three hobby jobs he landed in his final career as a security guard at the Port of Tacoma for more than eight years. A Celebration of Life will be held with family and friends in Everett, WA in November. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Shriners Children’s, the American Heart Association, or a charity of your choice. Tuell-McKee Funeral Home 253-272-1414

CURTIS , Peter Glehn October 12, 1930 - October 12, 2023 Peter attended Stowe School and graduated as a mining engineer from Camborne School of Mining in the UK. He worked in Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Canada. During his retirement he ran a garden landscaping business and enjoyed brewing beer. He was always a keen sportsman enjoying sailing, golfing, kayaking, lawn bowling, hiking, skiing, diving and windsurfing well into his eighties. He will be remembered for his dry sarcastic wit, gentlemanly demeanour, love of classical music and willingness to lend a hand. He leaves behind his brother, Heywood Glehn Curtis and his nephews, Bruce and Christopher, as well as eight grandnephews and grandnieces plus six great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces. An internment ceremony will be on November 16th at 1:00pm at the Boundary Bay Cemetery 856 56 St, Delta.

HO, David Kou Kuen 1937 - 2023 Family and friends are mourning the sudden, unexpected death of David Ho. During one of many routine leisure walks in his neighbourhood near Diefenbaker Park, he lost his way and did not come home in these harsh weather conditions. David has been a loving husband and father to his family. He was an active caring contributing member at the Mckee Senior Center where he enjoyed playing snooker, jazzercise, and sing-along groups. David and his wife May, volunteered at the Kinsmen Retirement Centre (now known as KinVillage) in Tsawwassen, Austin-Harris Residence in Richmond, The Cedars at Beulah Gardens in Vancouver and Mckee Senior Center in Ladner. He had aspirations to be a rock star as he had a wonderful voice. David was not only creative, intelligent, caring, and hardworking, but his devotion to his wife and family was exceptional and unconditional. David had relentless determination to succeed in whatever was his goal. Diefenbaker Park was a consistent destination as a neighbourhood walk for David. He would routinely walk around the park and then enjoy the view during a rest on a bench overlooking the whole park. David and his wife May, were the original owners of Delta Tackle, a manufacturing company which they created in 1983. He put his heart and efforts in this business until he retired in 2005. Prior to Delta Tackle, his first career was in the plastic manufacturing business. The family will be having an intimate, private service in the coming days. David leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, May, his four children Cecilia (Greg), Davis (Jessie), Angela and Benita and his three grandsons Dawson, Joshua and Justin. The family wish to thank the Delta Police Department and Whatcom County Fire & Rescue for all their hard work helping to find our Dad, and to express their gratitude to the search and rescue teams and volunteers in Tsawwassen and Point Roberts. We would also like to acknowledge Dr. S. Noble who has been very helpful and supportive. In addition, much appreciation to all the neighbours and friends, dad met during his many walks.

MITTAL, Anne October 26, 1944 − October 18, 2023 We are deeply saddened to announce the recent passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, who we miss dearly. In our hearts she holds a place no one else will ever fill. She was born Elizabeth "Anne" McMackin in a small northern town in BC called Telkwa, where her family owned the General Store. Anne was quite accomplished in school and, as a teenager, received a scholarship to come to Vancouver and attend Crofton House Private School for girls. Following graduation, Anne went on to attend the University of British Columbia, and it was there that she met the love of her life, Hari Krishan Mittal. Just two days shy of her 20th birthday, Anne and Hari were married on October 24th, 1964, and started their family in Vancouver. They moved a few times and eventually settled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Anne was an avid reader, she enjoyed her garden, and she loved to cook and take care of her family. She and Hari enjoyed many years golfing, playing bridge and travelling together. Anne was predeceased by her soul mate, Hari, of more than 57 years, in November, 2021. Anne is survived by her sister Jill (Gerry), son Paul (Michele), daughter Lisa (Bob), son David, grandson Jeremy (Serina), granddaughter Alex (Andrew), grandson Joey, and granddaughter Chloe. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother and a special Nana. She held close her sister, cousins, nieces and nephews, and their families, as well as her extended family and dear friends. She will be remembered for the intelligent, devoted and loving person that she was. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. We miss you and love you always."

Donations would be appreciated to the Point Roberts Fire Rescue Department District 5. (https://wcfd5.com/).

David, you will never walk alone: “When you walk through a storm hold your head up high and don’t be afraid of the dark. At the end of the storm there’s a golden sky and the sweet silver song of a lark. Walk on through the wind. Walk on through the rain though your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on. Walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone. You’ll never walk alone.” Songwriters: Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein
