Residents chafe under beetle that’s targeting Tsawwassen lawns PHIL MELNYCHUK p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

A Tsawwassen resident is grateful that, so far, her lawn has escaped the plague of European chafer beetles that are devouring some of her neighbours’ lawns and turning them into mud pits. But Kirsti Mattson is wondering why the City of Delta doesn’t help with controlling the nasty pest. “I’d like the city to take charge of the situation,” Mattson said, adding she wants better communication and says the city should explain to residents what it’s doing and

consider an eradication plan. Mattson says that more than a dozen homes nearby on 10A Avenue have had their lawns dug up by raccoons and crows that are looking for the creepy, white beetle larvae, about 1.5-centimetres long, that live just below the surface. The larvae hatch in June and in turn munch on the grass roots throughout the fall, winter, and spring, destroying lawns from below. “We don’t know why we escaped,” she said of her lawn noting that across the street, her neighbour had to replace their lawns entirely.

JIM KINNEAR PHOTO

Tsawwassen resident Kirsti Mattson says the European chafer beetle infestation is devastating lawns in her neighbourhood. She said one neighbour has dug up his entire lawn and replaced it with turf but, “we have no idea if he’s going to

have the same problem again next year.” Once a lawn is infested, the beetle larvae can be killed by either

applying microscopic nematodes that kill the larvae. However, specific steps and conditions must be followed for the process to work. And that requires regular watering and for the homeowner to get a watering permit, Mattson points out. She said it shouldn’t be up to residents to bear the cost of fighting the pest. Another option is applying a biological pesticide called Btg, permitted under Delta’s Pesticide Use Control Bylaw. So far, her lawn is unaffected, and she doesn’t know why, but she said that if her lawn does get

ruined, she’ll replace it with gravel. She said people spend hours working on their landscaping. “All of us have beautiful lawns and gardens, but I’m beginning to think that maybe we shouldn’t be having lawns in Tsawwassen anymore, which would be sad,” she said. Nearby residents have discussed it and have come to a consensus that they’ll give it one more year and if the lawns are still damaged, they’ll just put down gravel to replace the lawn. Delta demonstrates body-worn cameras as RCMP step up program PHIL MELNYCHUK

p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Body-worn cameras can help tone down encounters that police have with the public, Delta police said Thursday during an update hosted by B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police. “From my experience, for the vast majority of interactions, when you tell somebody that they’re being recorded, it keeps everything at a fairly calm and even level, on both sides,” said Sgt. Jim Ingram. It’s also better for officers during the processing of investigations because using videotape is much better than writing out notes after the fact, he added. “There has to be a balance struck and what we’re heard from the public and the community, is that on one hand, there are expectations that the police are equipped with body cameras,” while on the other, people want privacy, and they don’t want all their interactions recorded. Delta Police have led the way in B.C. for adopting body-worn cameras.

DPD started using bodyworn cameras two years ago, the first police department in B.C. to do so, and have progressively expanded their use, starting with the interdiction team. It later expanded to the traffic section and then to frontline patrol. The department currently has 21 body-worn cameras and will be adding another 16 this year. Each camera costs about $3,000, including the supporting hardware. Under Delta policy, police have discretion to turn on the camera if there is any value to using it for evidence purposes or for de-escalation. However, the camera must be turned on if there’s a potential for violence or aggression, Ingram said. Ingram said that after turning on the camera and informing the member of the public, once the interaction is completed, the officer stops the recording and then uploads the video back at the office to the secure digital evidence management system. The video is stored for 13 months unless it’s used as evidence in a prosecution. If it’s

Recently, Ingram stopped an impaired driver who refused to get out of the vehicle or open the window or interact with police. Ingram then told the driver the proceeding was being recorded and the motorist changed his mind. Cases being reviewed by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C.

also could be sped up. Vancouver Police also just announced a pilot program in which 85 officers in the traffic section, along with those who work in the downtown core and in East Vancouver, will begin patrolling with chestmounted cameras. Eventually, all front line VPD officers will have the cameras. The BC Association of Chiefs of Police said it’s working on a

coordinated approach to adding the cameras, but there’s no definite timeline on when body-worn cameras come into use at RCMP detachments in B.C. Chief Supt. Holly Turton said that while RCMP have used body-worn cameras on a limited basis since 2010, the cameras will be field-tested sometime this year in Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Nunavut. Assuming assessments are positive, RCMP then will start buying cameras and equipping their detachments in B.C. and across Canada. Neither is there any definite timeline for other municipal forces to start using body-worn cameras, with each agency making that decision. “We understand that while many people support the use of body-worn cameras, there are still concerns that have been expressed about how this technology will work,” said Turton. “This is why the BCACP recognized the need to collaborate, consult and to ensure that operational policing standards and policies were consistent across all police agencies in British Columbia.”

Dylan Kruger’s motion to ask for a staff report on the current fines and that staff come back with recommendations on updating the policy, particularly with regards to fireworks being lit near livestock. Kruger made the motion after hearing about the death of Aleisha Ham’s horse during New Year’s Eve. “Unfortunately, there was an incident over new years that did spook a horse on a local farm resulting in that horse breaking a leg. Unfortunately, that horse had to be put down,” Kruger explained. Ham said online that she went to check on her horse and found him injured.

“We foaled him out at our place 20 years ago and he was just the sweetest boy. Seeing him lie there in pain was awful. I was able to give him enough sedation to keep him comfortable until my boss arrived to euthanize, but it should have never happened,” Ham said on Facebook. She said she knew it was just an accident for five minutes’ worth of “oohs and ahhs” and said she forgave whoever set off the explosions. “I would just love for those who lit fireworks off to be more diligent of your surroundings and unknowns,” Ham said. After the horse’s death, the horse’s mom stood with her head down, “staring at her lifeless son

waiting to be picked up and taken away,” Ham wrote. “If you’re reading this and happened to be someone lighting the fireworks … I forgive you … but pleaseeeee do better next time,” she added. Kruger said it’s timely that council review the fines and policies regarding illegal fireworks, and if there are any opportunities to stiffen those penalties especially with regards to fireworks near livestock, Kruger said. Buying and using fireworks without a permit in Delta is illegal. Council supported the motion, with Coun. Rod Binder wanting to know about bylaws in other cities and where fireworks are coming from.

December impaired numbers show 71 drivers removed from Delta roads IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The December impaired driving statistics have been released by Delta Police and the numbers are not good. Between a normal month of enforcement along with enhanced CounterAttack campaign, Delta Police checked an estimated 6,700 drivers during the campaign. From those drivers, 22 were found with some level of impairment that resulted in a variety of driving prohibitions which included: 24-hour prohibition for providing a roadside breath sample ranging between .051 and .059 BAC; 24-hour prohibition for operating a vehicle while impaired

by drug; 72-hour prohibition for providing a roadside breath sample with a warn result (.06 and .1 BAC); a 90-day prohibition for providing a breath sample that resulted in a fail reading or for refusing to provide a breath sample and a 90-day administrative driving prohibition issued in conjunction with Criminal Code impaired driving investigation where the subject has provided a sample over .08 or refused to provide a sample. These can also be accompanied by Criminal Code impaired driving/over .08 charges or Criminal Code refusal charge. In total, December saw a total of 71 impaired

drivers removed from Delta roads. This number includes the 22 from the CounterAttack campaign. “Impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of death and injury in British Columbia,” said A/Insp. James Sandberg, public affairs manager for Delta Police. “Nearly one quarter of all car crash fatalities involve impaired driving. Sixty-one people each year lose their lives and 1,404 people are injured in 2,415 crashes. There is no excuse for impaired driving. Ride options, including taxi, transit, ride-share, or designated drivers are all options to replace impaired driving. Police will continue to target impaired drivers.”

CONTINUED from P 1 According to Kevin Li, senior environmental officer with the City of Delta, the beetle infestations aren’t necessarily getting worse, but they just continue to spread after first being seen in New Westminster in 2001, adding that the beetles have been in North Delta for more than 10 years. “It’s an invasive species, so the problem is that there’s no control,” apart from raccoons and crows tearing up lawns to eat up the larvae. So climate change doesn’t have a major aspect to it, that I know of,” although it may speed up the life cycle of the larvae. “They (beetles) do like the lawns that are less well maintained,” he said. However, properties with well-maintained lawns also have infesta-

tions, he said. The City of Delta’s website says that damage by the beetle is minimized by having a healthy lawn with deep roots. Aerating, dethatching, over seeding, liming, proper fertilizing, and high mowing are actions that promote strong growth, said the city. Watering’s also important, although summer watering restrictions must also be followed. Li added that the larvae prefer the traditional turf grass that’s found in most lawns, so one step could be changing the mix of grass seed to include micro clover, or other types of seeds, so the lawn is not as attractive to the beetle. He said if people choose to use the biological pesticides, timing of applications is crucial, adding that the nematodes are not as effective and that Btg is now the

most popular method. But homeowners can think about other options for landscaping such as planting rock gardens, a water landscape, shrubs, trees, vegetable gardens or fruit trees, Li said, referring to Metro Vancouver’s Grow Green Guide (growgreenguide.ca) online. He’s been dealing with beetles for 15 years and notes that after a first wave of beetle infestation, successive waves are not as intense. He keeps his own lawn long in the summer and adds top dressing in the winter. In addition, ensuring a lawn remains healthy and pest free takes a lot of work. “If you really want to keep a grass lawn, then you have to really care for it … because it’s always going to be a potential target for attack,” he said.

on the application at the hearing, a neighbour owning a heritage house. A staff report notes that in response, the applicant revised the plans by adding a 1.7-metre (5.5-foot) frosted glass privacy screen on the third floor patios and raised planters along the edge to create a buffer between the edge of the balcony and where someone would naturally stand. Staff are satisfied that the proposed treatment would address the community’s privacy concerns. A previous report to council notes that since the only adjacent property has a heritage house listed on the Delta Heritage Inventory, the opportunity for a lot consolidation to accommodate a more conventional townhouse development under a standard townhouse zone, or an apartment under the existing zone, was limited. The site was the subject of a previous three-unit strata townhouse proposal which was considered by council in 2018 and denied following a public hearing. Since that time, the ownership of the property changed.

A proposal to construct a three-unit townhouse development in Ladner Village finally got approval after addressing privacy concerns from a neighbouring resident. Council has granted final adoption of the Official Community Plan amendment to build the units on a vacant lot at 4780 48B St., each townhouse having four bedrooms and being just over 2,200-square-feet in size. Council at a June 28, 2022 public hearing, agreed to grant third reading to the rezoning and subdivision proposal by Jeremy Stam of BURO47 Architecture Inc., on behalf of a numbered company which is listed as the owner, for the development located to the southeast of the intersection of 48th Avenue and 48B Street. However, final approval wouldn’t be granted until privacy issues were addressed. The applicant was to work with city staff to review the design to address the concerns raised by a resident who spoke

OPINION

The system is broken Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES

I

think someone should check to see if there are bullseyes on the overpasses and Massey Tunnel here in Delta. Just a few weeks after the 112th overpass was struck with an over-height load and work to repair the Hwy. 17A overpass on Hwy. 99, which was hit in July, was just two days into its start, a truck clipped the inside of the Massey Tunnel on Wednesday night, Jan. 10. This has turned into a tragic comedy -- yet no one is laughing. Thanks to a video from a motorist, Richmond RCMP started an investigation into the Massey crash and identified the company as TSD Holdings Ltd., which had its fleet of 20 trucks grounded last Friday (Jan. 12) by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Bright Sky Disposal Ltd., the company responsible for the July crash on the Hwy. 17A overpass, has been fined $2,000, according to a report we published last week. The company involved in the 112th Street overpass strike, Chohan Freight Forwarders Ltd., has its operating licence suspended by MOTI, although, there were reports that their Edmonton division was still operating, and their trucks were spotted recently in parts of B.C. Add all of this up and you have a trucking industry in total chaos and politicians at every level scrambling to come up with solutions as the motoring public continues to grow angrier by the minute. Letters have been flying off the desks of local and provincial politicians. The United Truckers Association has called for a wideranging safety review. Even the federal government is starting to weigh in. As of the end of 2023, there had been 17 overpass strikes in the past year and 31 since December 2021. These numbers are unacceptable. One thing is perfectly clear – the system is broken. Fines are not tough enough. Drivers need way more training and education and the trucking companies themselves need to be held accountable for allowing these clearly inexperienced drivers on to our roads.

We may have survived Coldzilla, but are we prepared for what’s coming next?

I

’m thinking of making t-shirts boasting how I managed last week’s deep freeze with eyecatching slogans like, “I survived the polar vortex of 2024’,” or, “I lived through the Coldpocalypse.” Jokes aside, we have been fodder for the rest of the country as cars piled up after a dusting of snow. We huddled in our centrally heated homes and watched as temperature records were broken. As someone who visits the grocery store too many times in a week, I actually didn’t go out of my house for two days, except to quickly walk the dog around the block. Meteorologists tell us the dry arctic air that blew into the Lower Mainland is highly unusual. The polar vortex normally keeps arctic air at bay, but due to a warming

Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT

planet, extreme cold and heat are going to be our new normal. The province’s electrical grid was stretched to the max and burst water pipes disrupted ferries, hospitals, restaurants and homes. It’s clear, we are not ready for extreme highs and lows in temperatures, especially when we remember the heat dome of June 2021 - an expe-

rience I will never forget. Based on this year’s already minimal snow pack, we are in for serious drought this summer, leading to more forest fires. Climate change is overwhelming, and I am left wondering what we can do to better prepare for the inevitable weather extremes. I can’t stop countries from burning fossil fuels, but I can change my own behaviour. Some changes we have made include an on-demand hot-water tank, electric lawn mower, rain barrels and drought-tolerant plants. It all sounds mildly pathetic, but “baby steps” I tell myself, as we slowly adapt to the new normal. I used to worry about an earthquake. Now, weather is the new variable on a planet that is heating up way too fast.

Be wary of phone scammers Editor: On Dec. 21, a 90-year-old Delta senior, who lives independently alone, was telephone scammed out of $7,000. The senior was badly shaken up over this incident and wishes to warn others of this very convincing and emotional scam, so others will not become a victim. The senior answered a call, in which a machine or a man’s voice stated that the senior’s son was in jail due to a car accident, in which a child was killed. He was told that his son needed bail money, what was going to happen legally, and given specific directions on how to deposit the money at a nearby bank. The senior was so convinced the scenario was real that he immediately deposited the money. It was not long after the money transfer that the senior questioned if the scenario was true and contacted his son and the police. The next day, there was a second

call, and the caller provided more fake scenario details and asked the senior to specifically deposit another $7,000. The senior stated that he did not have enough money, but the caller kept insisting. While the senior thought the calls would stop, the calls persisted for several days thereafter, one of which was particularly unnerving and derogatory towards the senior. This experience has created a sense of distrust, vulnerability, and shame. Never be silent if something like this happens to you or someone you know. Be mindful and aware. If you do not recognize the number, or it states private or unknown caller, do not answer it. If you do, never give any personal information. Do not stay on the line, and hang up the phone. Please report any incidents to the police, as well as the banks involved, as soon as possible. Agnes Bauer

Would big beams stop trucks before damage caused? Editor: Another over height vehicle incident, this time a truck scraping the top of the tunnel Wednesday night (Jan. 10). Perhaps it’s time for the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to install horizontal beams over our highways that will hit the tops of over height vehicles before they damage more infrastructure.

The beams would need to be substantial enough to withstand being struck, and if they damage the too-tall vehicle, well, it was going to be damaged a minute or so later anyway. These would need to be placed before the last exit before the overpass or tunnel, so the trucks could take the exit. David Palmquist

Delta getting agriculture water infrastructure upgrade

The program is funded by BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food and delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Help is on the way for the Delta farming community’s irrigation system. The city announced the acquisition of a $2 million grant through the B.C. government’s Agricultural Water Infrastructure (AWI) Program. The funding will serve as a catalyst for crucial upgrades to the local irrigation water conveyance system, the city announced in a news release. The AWI program, funded by BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food and delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation, aims to adapt to climate change by strategically investing in water infrastructure in agricultural areas. “Farmers in Delta have helped feed B.C. families for generations, and making sure producers have access to a stable and secure water supply is key to the region and province’s food supply,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “We’ve all experienced the challenges of extreme weather and climate change in recent years, and working together, we will develop solutions that help prepare for future harvests, and enhance B.C.’s food security and communities.” The funding will be directed towards vital upgrades along the South Fraser Perimeter Road irrigation canal, including a culvert upgrade under Ladner Trunk Road and 72nd Street. Additionally, the funds will contribute to the construction of the West Ladner Irrigation Pump Station.

The total cost of the projects is approximately $4 million, with Delta’s share set at $2 million. The city notes the enhancements are pivotal in maintaining a robust and efficient irrigation system. “This funding is a testament to the collaborative efforts aimed at fortifying Delta’s agricultural infrastructure. By investing in these vital irrigation upgrades, we not only enhance water security but also actively contribute to maintaining a resilient and sustainable local food supply. The City of Delta is grateful for the support from the B.C. government, and we are committed to utilizing these funds effectively for the benefit of our farming community,” said Mayor George Harvie. At a meeting of Delta’s Agricultural and Hunting Regulation Advisory Committee last fall, the Delta Farmers’ Institute’s Peter Guichon told members of the Transportation Investment Corporation, who provided an update on the Fraser River Tunnel Project, about irrigation challenges. Guichon noted there have been ongoing issues with the irrigation canal system that was built by the province during the construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. He explained that the canal was built on very soft soil and, over time, the upward displacement of the canal bed has resulted in a major capacity constraint in the irrigation canal. The city installed a temporary irrigation pump in the canal to boost the supply of irrigation water during the drought last year.

City making EV charging more accessible SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The City of Delta is going to make its electric vehicle charging stations more accessible. Delta staff recently updated members of the city’s mobility and accessibility committee of planned accessibility improvements to stations, advising that the city received a grant to install an additional 20 Level 2 chargers and one DC Fast Charger. The improvements include longer charging cables at DC Fast Charger stations, pedestals installed at pavement level, shorter pedestals with lower handles and

screens and flat, paved surfaces at all charging stations. Also, one stall per charging station will be required to have wider dimensions. The city recently issued a request for proposals for the installation of the 21 city-supplied EV charging stations. The city is also working with BC Hydro to increase the number of DC Fast Chargers. BC Hydro in December announced that it had increased the number of chargers at its EV fast charging site at the South Delta Recreation Centre with the addition of three new 100-kilowatt charging units. Those are in addition to two already at

the centre, which were to be re-located to parking level to increase accessibility. BC Hydro last year announced that as part of its Electrification Plan, all its new fast charging sites are to designed to be barrier-free. Each location will now feature wider parking stalls, paved access, lowered chargers, wider protective bollards, improved lighting and better signage. BC Hydro said it is encouraging its hardware vendors to continue improving features on its equipment to make it more accessible including lowering screens and cable management systems.

Delta road, provincial highway intersection draws concern SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The Delta Police Department is working with the provincial government to address traffic safety at the busy intersection of Hwy. 17 and 56th Street. That’s what the city’s transportation advisory

committee was told during a recent meeting about traffic along 56th Street. Dep. Chief Harj Sidhu told the advisory committee that 56th Street at Hwy. 17, is a highcollision corridor with 13 accidents recorded since January 2023. He said the DPD

have been consulting with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in an effort to increase safety for road users. One of the accidents occurred last August when four people were sent to hospital following a three-vehicle collision. Another occurred

last spring when a twovehicle collision resulted in critical injuries to a person, while another a few weeks later, involved a single-car crash where a vehicle hit a pole and flipped on to its roof. The topic was raised during the committee’s discussion on a resident’s

request to the city that the traffic signals along 56th Street be synchronized, specifically between 12th Avenue and Hwy. 17, to reduce traffic congestion, vehicle emissions and vehicles running red lights. The committee was advised that the city reviewed the traffic lights along 56th Street in 2022 to bring signal times in line with Vision Zero principles and Delta’s mobility and accessibility committee’s recommendations. As a result, pedestrian clearance times were increased at all intersections along 56th Street. However, Hwy. 17 is a provincial road and out of the city’s jurisdiction. As far as further synchronization changes to the corridor, the commit-

tee was told that it can be challenging in highpedestrian areas. The city has coordinated traffic signals along 56th Street between 12th and 19th avenues, during peak hours, while a plan is in the works to install a traffic signal at 14B Avenue. The proposed new signal is part of the city’s 2024 capital budget.

What can I achieve in 2024? On Dec. 31 a friend sent me this message 2024 is almost here! My New Year’s wish for you is 12 months of happiness, 52 weeks of fun and laughter, 365 days of success, 8,760 hours of good health, 525,600 minutes of blessings, 31,536,000 seconds of Joy. Amen! No matter how beautiful this message was, it got me thinking of all the things that I failed to achieve in 2023. I thought this message was just a pie in the sky. When I read it again the presence of the word Amen restored my crushed spirit. My mind rushed to Jeremiah 29:10- 11-This is what the LORD says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and

In our weakness, he invites us: “Come unto me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest!” In our different kinds of thirst, he invites us: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and let the one who believes in me drink!” In our various hungers, he invites us to come and feed on him, the bread that came down from heaven, to give life to the world. Go down the Rabbit Hole with Sidekick Players Production opens Jan. 19 at Tsawwassen Arts Centre

Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Carroll Lefebvre and assisted by Linda Berndt, is Sidekick Players’ second production of the season. Rabbit Hole deals with the ways family members survive a major loss and includes comedy as well as tragedy. Lefebvre’s production handles the material with finesse and hints at the class distinctions between the characters. Justine Jones is very good at suggesting the minutiae of pain as Becca, and Adrian Pryce, as her risk-management husband, clearly inhabit the rarified world of graduate-filled suburbia, while Tiffany Rose Oud as Becca’s bruisingly candid sister and Lisa Somerville as the tactless, gossipy mum. are palpably not on the same circuit. One of the play’s best touches is to show that Becca relates more easily to a highly literate local teenager, nicely played by Brent Morrison, who was the inadvertent cause of her son’s death. Lindsay-Abaire’s perfectly truthful point is that, however much you try to let go of grief, you carry it around. “This play has pushed us all into another level of theatre,” said Lefebvre. “As a director, the characters have insinuated themselves into my life. I have never felt so ‘in touch’ with each character on a personal basis as I have with these five very different and complicated people. We all have been touched deeply by Abaire’s words and each fragile character in this play. Emotionally, it has brought us to tears, anger and laughter.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with each very dedicated and talented actor in this production.” Rabbit Hole opens Jan. 19 and runs to Feb. 3 at The Tsawwassen Arts Centre, (1172 56th Street). The many benefits of vocational training How students can better Earning a four-year degree is one path toward a rewarding career. However, that path is the only one available to aspiring professionals. Enrolling in a vocational program can provide students with the skills necessary to engage in high-demand and wellpaying jobs. Vocational school, often referred to as “trade school,” can be an advantageous route for many people who are looking for an alternative to college. A 2018 poll from The Learning House, a skills training and coursework company, found 35 percent of students said tuition and other fees were their primary

tutions. Most vocational programs last two years, meaning that students graduate with far less debt than they might accrue when pursuing a four-year college program. Individualized attention: Many trade programs offer instruction in very intimate settings, with experienced practitioners serving as mentors and trainers. While each program is different, vocational training schools tend to have lower faculty-to-student ratios than traditional colleges. Fewer admission requirements: Trade schools may not have the same stringent application and admissions processes as colleges. Course prerequisites and grade point average requirements also may not dictate trade school admissions policies. Direct, hands-on training: Unlike a traditional college that marries general education courses with those specific to a major, trade school programs focus only on skills and training relevant to each student’s chosen career path. Less time to complete schooling: More direct lessons means that students can complete their certifications or degrees in shorter times and enter the workforce much more quickly than their counterparts at traditional colleges and universities. Vocational training in trade schools is a viable option for students who want to spend less money and gain valuable skills they can utilize to earn a good living. -Metro Creative

manage their time

Many people have a lot of demands on their time. There are only so many hours in a day, which means that the sooner a person can develop strategies for managing his or her time efficiently and effectively, the more successful that person can be. It can be especially important for students to explore ways to improve their time management skills early in their academic careers. Time management involves planning, and that includes allotting time for specific tasks. The following strategies can be useful for anyone looking to manage their time more effectively: Establish a daily schedule Staying the course may require a guideline detailing how you will spend your time. A good part of the day may be taken up by classes and assignments, but focusing on the other parts of the day also is key. Set up a plan for how you will treat each day. Block off specific times for exercise, meals, school, study, and any other responsibilities you have. Time blocking is a format by which you go through the moments of the day. You can block out by the hour or any amount of time you need. Figure out where you’re losing time You need to know how you’re currently spending your time before you can improve on time management strategies. Spend a few days jotting down a time log. This will help you determine if you’re working efficiently or

where you are losing time. Make time for breaks Burnout can occur when you work yourself too hard. That makes breaks an important part of time management. Breaks allow for time to call loved ones, text with friends, meditate, or engage in other activities unrelated to school. According to sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman, people’s minds naturally crave breaks after 90 minutes of intense work. You may need breaks at different intervals. Learn to read your body’s cues. Break projects down Many students avoid projects they feel are huge tasks. Breaking down the larger job into smaller ones can help students stay focused and reward progress. For example, if you need to write a 50-page research paper, make the first task finding source material, the next citing quotes and studies, and then resolve to write a set number of pages per day. Schedule classes wisely Some people are night owls while others thrive in the morning. Set up schedules so youÕre in class when you are at your most productive; otherwise, you could lag and waste time. This may not be possible for high school students, but colleges allow for more flexibility in scheduling. Time management is an important skill for students to develop. It will help in the classroom and later on when entering the workforce. -Metro Creative

What students can do to block out distractions in the classroom An ability to focus in the classroom can go a long way toward helping students achieve their academic goals. But distractions lurk in every corner, making it easier than ever to succumb to a lack of focus. Maintaining focus in the classroom can be difficult in the digital age, but students can try various strategies to block out distractions once class begins. Disconnect your devices: A 2020 report from the non-profit association Educause found that the majority of students report connecting two or more devices to campus Wi-Fi each day. Devices often serve as useful tools that augment classroom lessons, but they also can distract students. Students can turn off notifications on their phones and tablets before class

begins so that familiar ping does not sound during lectures and lessons. In addition, unless devices are necessary during a class, students can store them

in places where they won’t be tempted to check for messages or other alerts when they should be learning. Storing devices in a separate pocket in

a backpack or even in a locker outside the classroom can remove the temptation to log on during class. Prepare for class in advance: Organizing before class can help students stay focused when a teacher is lecturing, explaining classroom material or engaging students in a discussion. Students who can’t readily access their notes, books or assignments may be forced to spend valuable class time looking for such materials, thus distracting them from the lesson. Bring questions to class: Students who jot down questions about a subject prior to class are more likely to be engaged once class begins. Students can ask their questions during the lesson and listen intently to hear if their teacher or professor is answer-

ing their questions during their lecture. Either way, bringing questions to class and going over them before class begins can help students narrow their focus to the subject at hand, reducing the likelihood that they’ll succumb to distractions. Sit in the front of class: Students who are having trouble focusing can try sitting in the front of class. Sitting in the front ensures students can hear their teachers or professors, and sitting so close might subconsciously compel students to perk up so they’re not caught wandering. Devices and other distractions can easily compromise students’ focus in the classroom. But various strategies can help students focus so they can perform better academically. –Metro Creative

I read that gold came close to reaching a record high in pricing. I was thinking of bringing in my old jewellery in to sell. On Thursday March 23, gold reached $2750 CDN which broke the previous record of $2720 from 2020. Articles from the US show large amounts of people selling gold jewellery there to take advantage of these high prices. We have found that our purchasing of scrap gold jewellery has seen a large uptake in the last two moths due to these high prices. Many of the sellers tell us that the reasons they come to us are: 1. That friends recommended us to them. 2. We are member of Better Business Bureau. 3. We have a Gold analyzer that we test gold with and allows let customers watch the screen results. 4. The high prices that we pay for the gold compared to other places. If you are thinking of selling at these high prices, I believe you will be more that happy with our service and prices.

What is pre-payment and what does my mortgage offer?

We’re thinking about a new set of tires for our vehicle - what information do we need to provide you for a quote?

A pre-payment is an extra amount that the lender will allow you to pay onto your principal without penalty. The amount you can pay and when you are allowed to pre pay varies from lender to lender. Some lenders will allow only one time a year while others may allow you to put lump sums onto your principal at any time during the year. The amount of pre payments generally range from 10% - 20% of your original or outstanding mortgage amount.

I am afraid of the dentist. Will sedation work for me?

I’m curious about collaborative naturopathic care. Can you help me understand what it is?

You are not alone. Many people have fears around dental appointments, resulting from previous bad experiences or just deep seated irrational fears. Regardless, It is possible to have conscious sedation ensuring that you remember little or nothing about your dental Dr. Raj Dhiman appointment. By taking just one little pill, the 604-946-9588 dentist can complete all the treatment required in as little as one or two appointments. We have treated many patients who have avoided the dentist for decades due to these fears and they would never have thought 130 – 4977 Trenant Street, Delta smile@ladnerdentist.com they could have a healthy mouth.

I love this question. Our clinic has always been a

collaborative naturopathic clinic. In my opinion the patient benefits beautifully. It allows us to truly take care of our patients’ healthcare needs, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. We also appreciate and find such value collaborating with other professions in patient care such as the medical doctors in town, specialists,

physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, etc. We find this integrative approach greatly improves outcomes for our patients. Patients feel better. Need us less. So we can see more people. It’s a good model. It supports our at capacity healthcare system.

Capstone project turns into mission to help those in need IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

What started out as a capstone project for her Grade 12 graduation requirements has turned into so much more. In early December, South Delta Secondary student Olivia Crocker started a clothing and supply drive for the homeless in Vancouver. She said the project has allowed her to explore her passion for health and human services and address pressing issues such as homelessness, mental illness, and social intervention. She has previous experience

organizing similar projects and through those projects, has seen first-hand the impact of providing essential items to those in need. When she posted her project idea to the Tsawwassen Loop Facebook group she was hoping to make a meaningful difference with the support of donations from the community. She has done that in more as the impact and generosity shown and the support for her project has been overwhelming. “I work at Beach Grove Golf Course and one of the members has connections to the Downtown Eastside, so I have

lots of leads and what areas of Vancouver really needs the support and help,” she said. “I have more than 50 bags of clothing, including blankets, clothing, towels, non-perishable items… it’s been very overwhelming, but amazing with all the support that I have been receiving.” Her family has helped her put together clothing bundles and she dropped off the donations to people on the street in Vancouver last weekend and will continue those drop-offs or donated to a shelter in the next month. She is still accepting donations from Ladner and Tsawwassen residents.

Donations can include blankets, warm clothing, socks, hats – basically winter essentials. Those wishing to donate and to arrange pick-up can email Olivia at: oliviaejcrocker@hotmail.com. “I’ve been very grateful to see how giving this community is,” she said, adding that when she started, she had no idea how large the project would become. “It’s been amazing. I’m very thankful for everyone’s donations. My family and I already had an idea to do this, but it happened to correlate into that, but again, either way, it’s been such an amazing project.”

A D V I C E F R O M T H E PROFESSIONALS Why would I want to go to Alaska?

How can I protect myself from shingles?

For anyone looking for an easy vacation option, an Alaska cruise is a must. It’s close to home, you do not have to fly, and it’s always a sought-after destination. An Alaska cruise allows you to connect with Mother Nature like never before as you experience the breathtaking fjords, majestic wildlife, and beautiful scenery while you sail along the waters of this magnificent land.

Thank you for this great question. Shingles is a viral infection in adults caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox in children (herpes zoster). Most people are carriers of the virus and we do not know why some people get the infection and some do not. The best protection against developing a shingles infection is vaccination against the virus. The vaccination is indicated for individuals 50 and older and is a 2-dose series given 2-6 months apart. The vaccine is usually well tolerated with minimal side effects. It is available without prescription and is NOT covered by the BC PharmaCare program. Some private insurance companies may cover the vaccine with a prescription from your health care provider. Call us for more details. “Your personal pharmacist is with you every step of the way” is not just a slogan – it is THE reason Paul Gibbons, Pharmacist/Owner at the Medicine Shoppe in Tsawwassen, looks forward to helping you every day.

The sun never really dips below the horizon in Alaska, so imagine catching a glimpse of the sun at midnight while cruising along a scenic waterscape. There’s no time like the present to discover the majestic beauty of Mother Nature’s finest work.

Celebrating history, supporting the future of DSS basketball

The Delta Secondary Alumni Basketball Association is pleased to announce the 35th annual Alumni Basketball Tournament, taking place on Jan. 26 and 27 at DSS. This event is not just a gathering of past basketball players; it’s an opportunity to support a cause close to the community’s hearts - the Anesto Charles Foundation. The Anesto Charles Foundation is in honour of a former DSS grad of 1979 who died suddenly of congenital heart failure following a basketball game in February 1996. His legacy lives on through the foundation, which provides scholarships and funding to young athletes and local teams, helping them to reach their full potential. The foundation is committed to nurturing young talent in our community. This tournament is the longest running alumni basketball event in the province and invites all DSS alumni who have ever played basketball at the school

to participate. Featuring men’s, women’s, and old timer’s games, everyone has the opportunity to participate and reconnect. This is a chance to step back on to the court, reconnect with old teammates, and support the community’s future athletes. The tournament is more than just games; it’s a vibrant social event. With games throughout the day and social gatherings in the evening, it’s the perfect opportunity for alumni to catch up, reminisce about old times, and create new memories on and off the court. The community is invited to the weekend at DSS to honour Anesto Charles’ legacy and support the future of sports in the community. To register, please visit this link (https://forms.gle/ Kkm6cPsCGEVvWozy5). Organizers look forward to welcoming you back to the court and celebrating this milestone event together. - Submitted

A Tsawwassen hockey player will be taking his talents to Robert Morris University. Just before Christmas, the West Kelowna Warriors of the BCHL announced that forward Trent Wilson has committed to Robert Morris University. Wilson, 19, is in his first season with the Warriors and has posted nine goals and eight

Wilson has compiled 115 games in the league, splitting time between the Warriors and Surrey Eagles, amassing 23 goals and 50 points in that span. “I’m very excited to commit to Robert Morris university and be a Colonial,” Wilson said, “It’s always been a goal of mine to play Division 1 hockey and after learn-

ing about their program, I thought it would be a good fit for me. Thanks to the West Kelowna Warriors organization and everyone else who has supported me along the way.” “We are so excited for Trent. Since coming to the Warriors this year, he has put his head down and worked,” said general manager and head coach Simon Ferguson. “He takes care of the small details and has ability to impact the

scoreboard. It is another great example of B.C. -born and raised players earning opportunity at the NCAA level.” Wilson will join a Robert Morris program that has returned to the NCAA Division 1 ranks, and plays out of the Atlantic Hockey Conference and Moon Township, Penn. The Colonials are manned by Derek Schooley and have three BCHL alums on their team.

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES

STAPLETON, Irene (Wilda) May 29, 1935 – December 28, 2023 It is with profound sadness that we as a family announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Irene Stapleton, of Kelowna, B.C.

BLACK, David Edgar

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

After a short illness David Edgar Black died peacefully early Christmas morning at Vancouver General Hospital. David was born June 28, 1945 in Ladner, BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Lois (née Estabrooke) and Bill Black and his beloved wife Debbie Carswell-Black. Survived by his devoted partner, Dorothy Budden, his daughter Eleanor Black and his two grandchildren, Caden Black and Maeve MacArthur, all of whom he loved dearly. David graduated from UBC in 1968 with a BA, Major in History and a Master’s in Arts and Science from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington in 1978. He taught Social Sciences in Penticton and embraced skiing, running and tennis and made lasting friendships with Bob Cook and Bob June. He lived the last 37 years in Vancouver but spent as much time as possible at the family home on Pasley Island, his oasis away from the city. Wise and thoughtful, David was a true gentleman and a raconteur extraordinaire. He was a scholar, blessed with a truly infallible memory for the fascinating details that made history feel alive. David loved life, and he lived it to the fullest. He was a true joy to know, and will be missed terribly by both his and Dorothy’s families, and his many friends in BC and across Canada. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

HARAMBOURE, Raymon July 4, 1941 − January 3, 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Raymon Peter Haramboure. After a brief illness and enjoying Christmas with his family, Ray passed in the company of his wife, Janis, on the afternoon of January 3, 2024. Born in a logging camp outside of Campbell River, Ray lived a life unlike many others. Known throughout Vancouver and Delta for his ownership of the Fraser Arms Hotel and the Ladner Arms Hotel, Ray touched the lives of many in his community. He was a passionate fastball coach who brought out the best in his teams and players. In business and sport, Ray always strived for success. Those who had the honour to know him will know that Ray was a fantastic cook who never let you leave hungry. He cared for his friends like family, and that extended to the many animals in his life as well. Ray had a special connection with animals and made many animal friends throughout his life, including Cubby the bear, Willy the one−legged seagull, Scrappy the squirrel and his beloved dogs and cats. Above all, Ray was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, and immensely loyal friend. We will miss his stories, his kindness, and his incredible cooking. Ray is survived by his wife Janis and her family; his two sons, Jean Paul and Raymon Jr; and his four granddaughters, Zoey, Olivia, Dyllan, and Elaira. Ray is also survived by his dear friends, who he made a point of staying in touch with throughout the years. A celebration of life is to be announced at a later date.

Irene was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Jack, on April 22, 2021. Her memory will be forever cherished by her four children, Debbie, Ken (Christine), Dianne (Dave), and Garry (Debra), seven grandchildren, Tara (Isaac), Ashley (Joe), Chad (Chelsea), Shauna (Ryan), Jarret (Denise), Jesse, Jaclyn (Jeff), and nine great grandchildren, Presley, Elliotte, Cole, Harlow, Logan, Avery, Teddy, Whitney, and Lucy. Born in Viking, Alberta to Eugene and Mary Meyer, Mom was one of five children and is survived by her sisters Catherine and Margorie. She grew up in a farming community in Irma, Alberta and over the years led a very active and social life. She enjoyed downhill skiing (well into her 70’s), golfing, sewing, fishing, camping, gardening, daily power walks, playing pool and attending all her grandchildren’s activities. Mom was a hard worker and enjoyed many jobs as a secretary, recreational therapist at Cottonwood’s and Brookhaven and working at Walmart– of which she graciously took a lot of ribbing. Mom loved to laugh and had a smile that would light up any room. She and Dad loved to travel, taking many trips across Canada, Hawaii, Reno, and lastly - a very memorable visit to Ireland with Ken and Christine. She will fondly be remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her. Our family would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to Dr. Gossier and all the staff at Village at Smith Creek - Reece Ward, who lovingly and attentively cared for Mom the past two years. A service to celebrate her extraordinary life will be held on May 3, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Lake View Memorial Gardens 2850 Dry Valley Road, Kelowna. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer’s Society or BC Cancer society for Breast Cancer. Rest peacefully Mom. We Love You. ALLEN, Brenda June 27, 1956 to January 5, 2024

TURNER, Loretto (Molly) Marie June 30, 1946 - January 9th, 2024

Brenda Allen of Delta, B.C., passed away peacefully on January 5th, surrounded by family and friends.

Loretto “Molly” (Layman, Therien) Turner was born on June 30th, 1946 at St Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC. She passed away suddenly from heart failure on January 9th, 2024 at the Penticton Regional Hospital. She and Teresa had just started a oneweek holiday south of Penticton in Osoyoos, BC.

Brenda was well-loved and touched many lives with her endearing personality, humour, and cutting wit. A fabulous cook, former Girl Guide leader, and talented in arts and crafts, her passions brought joy to many. She leaves daughters, Sydney and Stacey, son, Ryan, and husband, Mark to cherish her memory and loved traditions. A Celebration of Life will be held in the near future. Details will be posted at Dignitymemorial.com under Brenda’s name.

Molly is survived by her loving partner of 30 years, Teresa Pickering, her two sons who were part of her core being, D’Arcy Therien (wife Samantha) and Paul Therien, her daughter Jill (husband Warren), granddaughter Sara, her brother Rod Layman (wife Catharine), nieces Leah and Danielle, grand-nieces Rafi and Akira, great nephew Enzo, step-son Rob (wife Shelley), painting partner and cousin Terry, and other extended family and special friends. Molly was predeceased by her father Tom, her mother Jacqueline, her brothers Eric, Billy and John Layman and her niece Jacqueline. Molly, raised as an Air Force brat, lived on bases from the West Coast to Ontario. Setting out on her own journey, she shared a Toronto apartment with Sue Rochon, her lifelong best friend. Eventually, Molly moved to Edmonton and made this her home for more than 25 years. Here she forged meaningful lifelong connections in personal and professional life, and within the community. Molly’s career included senior administrative roles in the private sector until she landed with the Alberta Government where her skills, knowledge, and tact in various roles, culminated in her position as the Executive Director of Human Resources for Children’s Services.

GRANT, Margaret Isabel (née Morrow) February 13, 1933 - January 4, 2024 Margaret (Marg) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Marg was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bob, parents, Ernest and Amelia, and her siblings, Donald, Robert, Rodney, Ruthie, Barrie, and Rodger. Marg is survived by her loving sons Barrie (Patty) and Cameron (Cheryl), grandchildren Kristie (Brendon), Karlee (Zach), and Taylor (Sarah), great-grandchildren Brantley and Duke, sister-inlaw Nan Morrow, many nieces and nephews, extended family, and cherished friends. Marg lived a full life and will be remembered for her kindness, quick wit, and love for spending time with family, entertainment, and travel. The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the complex care team at Suncrest Retirement Community for the care and support they provided to Margaret. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice. Rest in peace Mom.

Molly loved being outside, she was an avid gardener and camper. In the warmer months, you could find her out landscaping in the blazing sun. She loved camping, sharing traveling, canasta, good food and scotch or manhattans with her family and many, many good friends . This is also where Molly perfected and taught skills such as “tarp technology”, rainy campfire lighting and perfect potatoes on the fire, yum! In retirement, Molly and Teresa moved to Vancouver, where she began to actively pursue a love of painting, taking courses at Emily Carr and other venues. Molly always had projects underway, painting, sewing, woodworking, gardening or her favourite - redecorating with Paul’s help. And encouraging Teresa in her love of golf to get her out of the house! Molly, Teresa and Remy the cuddle dog, ended up in Delta at Tsawwassen Springs and then central Ladner, which she loved. She never wanted to move again. A Celebration of Life will be held for family and close friends only. In lieu of flowers, please support her son D’Arcy on his 2024 Tour de Force bike ride in support of BC Cancer. D’Arcy started the ride as his Mom battled her second round of cancer in 2016 in honour of her courage, and Molly was his #1 supporter. The link is: https://tourdecure.ca/fundraiser/darcy

BUCKLEY, Dorothy Our dear mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother, Dorothy Buckley, went to be with her Lord and Saviour on December 13, 2023, while at home. She had reached 100 years of age and was due to celebrate her 101st birthday in less than 3 weeks. Born in Sheffield, England, she served her country in the Woman’s Royal Navy during war time, later immigrating to Canada. She had a deep faith in God which she shared with others. Her sons Paul (Jackie) and John, her daughters Gillian (Tom) and Jane (Wayne), her grandchildren Sharon, Sean, Allison, Christopher, Geoffrey, Beth and Mark, her great-grandchildren Logan, Ada, Ruby, Oliver I., Callum, Lachlan, Mason, Luca, Oliver B., Amelia and Audrey will miss her love, prayers, and sense of humour. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 1:30 pm at Tsawwassen Alliance Church, 4951 12th Ave. Delta.
