Tsawwassen legion works out lease deal SANDOR GYARMATI s g ya rm a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
It is great news for members of the Royal Canadian Legion Tsawwassen Branch No. 289 and those who frequent the establishment. The legion, since the mid1990s, has been leasing space in Century Square, a commercial complex in the 1800block of 56th Street, owned by Century Group. Acknowledging the rent break it has been getting from Century Group, the legion was facing its biggest challenge because the property management company for the owner notified them when the lease was renewed in the summer of 2022, it would be the last. That left the legion, continuing to be active fundraisers in the community, look-
ing for another affordable location as the clock ticked on the lease, which was set to expire Aug. 31, 2023. Fortunately, after an extension, the two sides have been able to negotiate a new threeyear lease. Branch president Tanya MacNeill told the Optimist it was fantastic news and a great relief, as finding an alternate location in the community proved difficult. “We went to several other different places to look for, like the Tsawwassen Commons area and anywhere within Tsawwassen, but market rates everywhere are just so expensive. “As a not for profit, it was just way too much for us,” she said. MacNeill noted other factors including finding the right size and a location
where they could get a liquor licence also proved to be challenging. “Not having to move was obviously our best-case scenario and we are so absolutely appreciative of the fact we were able to work out something that works for us both,” she added. Century Group president Sean Hodgins told the Optimist that the credit really goes to property manager Simon Griffiths, who managed to negotiate something that makes the legion happy. It is obvious there is a bond among people who frequent the legion, so he is glad that can continue, he said. In summer 2022, city council gave the branch another boost by approving an application to make the temporary seasonal outdoor patio permanent.

Police say incident proves value of body-worn cameras SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta police say a recent incident where a suspect got into a physical confrontation with officers underscores the importance of the bodyworn camera program. Police said in a news release Wednesday (Jan. 31) that in response to a domestic assault reported on Jan. 28, at 1 p.m., officers located and engaged with an intoxicated suspect who had left the scene. After being told that he was under arrest, the suspect started fighting with the officers. During the assault, two officers were exposed to the suspect’s blood, resulting in one officer requiring ongoing treatment for blood contamination. The suspect has been charged with one count of assault related to the initial complaint, one count of assaulting a police officer, and one
count of resisting or willfully obstructing a police officer. The individual has been released from custody. “This incident underscores the invaluable contribution of the DPD’s body-worn camera program. Video footage retrieved from an officer’s BWC impeccably documented the altercation, including the assault on two officers perpetrated by the suspect. Although the camera footage will not be publicly disclosed, it forms a pivotal piece of evidence for this case,” said A/Insp. James Sandberg. Delta police said among the key advantages of the program is enhanced accountability by furnishing an impartial record of interactions between police and the public. Chief Neil Dubord told the Delta police board in December that a 2024 survey found 92 per cent approval for the

Using body-worn cameras fosters transparency, nurturing trust between the police and the community, according to Delta police. program. A report to the police board notes that, currently, the DPD is equipped with 20 body-worn cameras acquired at a cost of
roughly $15,000. While the complete expenditure for the equipment and related gear amounted to $24,000, approximately
$9,000 was subsidized through the police training and equipment grant provided by the provincial Civil Forfeiture Office.
The report also notes that, overall, the survey feedback shows that the program aligns well with DPD’s community-first policing approach. The department in 2022 became the first in B.C. to deploy the cameras operationally, starting with the interdiction team. The pilot-program later expanded to the traffic section and then to frontline patrol. During an update hosted by B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police in Surrey earlier this month, it was noted the association is working on a coordinated approach to adding the cameras. Vancouver police recently announced a pilot program in which 85 officers in the traffic section along with those who work in the downtown core and in East Vancouver will begin patrolling with chestmounted cameras. The plan is to expand the program to all frontline offers.

Gov’t. says more rules soon on cellphones, but no details PHIL MELNYCHUK
p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
The province has said it wants to restrict cellphone use in classrooms, something the president of the Delta Teachers’ Association supports. Finding the best way of curbing technology however, while preserving its advantages, will take sorting out. “Overall, the DTA is pleased that the government is working on this issue to keep kids safe, absolutely,” Susan Yao told the Optimist, but she noted the government is talking about restrictions on cellphones, rather than a ban. “So, what will that look like? Policies have yet to be determined,” she said. Many teachers will welcome the change because cellphones and social media can be a distraction to learning, as well as a hazard to student mental health, she added. Sharing images, extortion and bullying can all take place. “And we don’t know what’s happening in the hallways, when students aren’t in class,” she added. However, many teachers use tech-

nology in their classroom for research, communication or for use as calculators, while some teachers ask students to put their cellphones away. There are good and bad points with such devices, Yao said. And how will restrictions impact the positive uses of devices in education? “So what will new policies look like and how will they be implemented?” B.C. Premier David Eby said on Jan. 26 that the government plans on “restrict-

ing the use of cellphones in schools” but gave no details, saying the government will work with school districts, to ensure schools have policies by September. The premier also announced services to remove images from the internet and pursue predators and hold social media accountable for the harm they’ve caused. However, guidelines are already in place for both students and teachers, when it comes to personal communication devices, said Delta School District superintendent Doug Sheppard, who welcomed the government’s announcement. The school district’s procedures, revised in 2022, say that mobiles are not to be used during class time (unless such use helps with learning, as permitted by the teacher) or during any school activity and that they should be stored in silent mode. During emergencies, school principals can decide acceptable use during those situations. Neither can cellphones be used during exams, without permission, or in change rooms or washrooms. Those
who don’t comply, could face disciplinary measures. The procedures also note that storing the phones securely is the owner’s responsibility. But in the next few months, government should send more detailed guidelines about cellphone restrictions, Sheppard added. “Once we have that information, we will look at making any necessary changes for implementation at the start of the new school year in September,” Sheppard said. Yao also asked if once policies are decided, who will oversee enforcement? “Teachers are already being challenged with the many aspects of their job. They don’t need yet another task to manage,” she added, saying that smaller class sizes helps everything. Families also must support the policies, she added. Still, Yao is happy the government is doing something, adding that the use of cellphones is a community and societal problem, that must be addressed together, with teachers consulted.

City to review new Ladner Village sign process SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta will review the process that led to the installation of a controversial sign welcoming visitors to Ladner Village, as well as the new sign itself. Mayor George Harvie, at Monday’s council meeting, announced the review of the process to add the signage at the Stokes and Cullis Plaza, which he said has “sparked many conversations regarding whether this sign fits in with our community and how we could have better engaged residents and businesses on the scope, design and location of the sign.” A concept photo of the proposed plaza layout that
CONDOMINIUM COLLECTION AT WEST COAST ESTATES IN SUNNY TSAWWASSEN
had been made available to the public showed a space for “iconic signage with lighting” but not an image of what the sign would look like. When the blue sign, which is lit at night, was installed last month, it seemed to catch many off guard and drew a lot of mostly negative comments on social media. Harvie noted, “As mayor, I fully agree this is not the city’s best work.” City manager Donny van Dyk has been tasked to review the process, how the structure was procured and installed and report back to council on how future city projects can be ensured to fit better with the community. Harvie said he also asked van Dyk to report
back on the future placement of the current sign. The city manager will undertake the review without direction from the mayor or council, Harvie added. Completed last November, the new plaza was created following the redevelopment and restoration of the two-storey Stokes and Cullis building, which was built in 1907, to its original look. An earlier staff report noted that the plaza was estimated to cost approximately $200,000 with the Ladner Rotary Club contributing $25,000 for two features of the plaza – the two e-bike charging stations and the large wooden seating structure. - with files from Ian Jacques

Carrier fined $2,371 for truck hitting roof of Massey Tunnel The incident caused widespread traffic issues VIKKI HUI
Ri c h m o n d N e w s
A carrier was fined and grounded after one of its trucks hit the roof of the George Massey Tunnel midspan. The incident, which took place at night on Jan. 10, was reported to Richmond RCMP by a driver who witnessed the truck coming to a stop after hitting the roof, before it continued driving. On Feb. 2, Richmond RCMP announced the driver, a 30-year-old man from Surrey, was issued a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
The carrier he worked for received an immediate suspension pending police investigation, which grounded all 20 vehicles in its fleet. It was then fined a total of $2,371 and had to submit an action plan for safely transporting oversized loads before police lifted the suspension on Jan. 19. Police explained the truck and its driver were not present when police arrived, but the driver and the carrier were identified thanks to dashcam footage from a driver. The incident caused “considerable trafficrelated issues over a wide area,” said Richmond
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang. “Evidence was discovered suggesting that the tunnel had sustained damage and needed to be immediately closed until a thorough structural assessment could be completed by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.” The ministry’s commercial vehicle safety and enforcement officers will continue to monitor the carrier, and “new, high fines and lengthy suspensions” are being implemented to avoid collisions involving overweight vehicles, Hwang added.

T
he individual has been released from custody by the court. This is a phrase that is all too uncommon these days when it comes to police arrests and the subsequent next steps in our judicial
process. On page three of today’s edition, we have a story about a police arrest recently when a suspect got into a physical confrontation with two Delta police officers. The suspect is facing not only assault charges for the physical fight with officers, but also suspected assault related to the initial complaint – in this case – an intimate partner violence incident. These are serious charges where the safety and wellbeing of the officers is in question, as is the complainant – the victim - which brought police to their doorstep in the first place. Intimate partner violence cases are growing at an alarming rate, according to Delta police. I asked A/Insp. James Sandberg, public affairs manager for the department, to pull some stats for me from 2023. What he provided was shocking: * 834 files/reports in 2023 that fell into category of intimate partner violence * 169 of those events resulted in charge recommendations via Reports to Crown Counsel * 117 events resulted in charges sworn * In 27 of those 169 RTCC’s – either the officer released the suspect on an undertaking, or pursued court appearance by summons, or warrant request (officer released in first instance or could not locate suspect) * Of the 117 charge events, the courts held 21 suspects at their first appearance, meaning 96 were released. The last stat – 96 suspects released proves my point – our criminal justice system is so broken. The courts are giving more rights to the offenders than to the accused. This lack of justice must be so frustrating to police officers not only in this province, but across the country. There is a provincial election in October and a federal one is not too far off. If you agree that major changes need to be made to fix our justice system, remember this when you choose your candidate and cast your vote.
Valentine’s Day a time to reflect on the power of love
M
y dog Rosie turned 12 this week. She’s a golden Labrador with big brown eyes and blond hair that never stops sticking to the furniture. Her birthday reminded me of how deeply I love her. It led me to question how we explain feelings of intense love for a pet, a child, parent, friend, or romantic partner. Despite all of love’s failings, it’s the one emotion we can never give up on, even if we try. Valentine’s Day celebrates romantic love, and the love we feel for our friends and family. The history is murky, but we know its origins are in godly love. Saint Valentine was the patron saint of love, who handed out notes with expressions of God’s love.
Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT
In the Middle Ages, poet Geoffrey Chaucer advanced the idea by motivating people to write love letters to their betrothed and it took off. The first Valentine’s card was sent from prison. Nowadays, 145 million Valentine’s cards are exchanged every year, not including the ones classmates exchange at school Valentine’s Day parties. The giving of flowers began when Victorian-
era men claimed red roses as a symbol of love. In 1861, Richard Cadbury created heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. North Americans will spend $26 billion this month celebrating love. Commercialism aside, the sentiment is essential to our humanness and to our existence, for without love, we are not alive. Believe in love even if doesn’t look like what you expected because love is everywhere. It’s in how we make a meal, how we interact with our neighbour, and how we treat others. Love is not something you discover one day. It’s learning to see it every day so that it can lift you up and keep you strong. Whether you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day or not, remember, love is to be cherished and not taken for granted.

City action on chafer beetle infestation buggy, at best Editor: The City of Delta’s response to chaffer beetle infestations in South Delta is unbelievably tone deaf. According to the recent article in the Optimist, a City of Delta staffer is quoted as saying the beetle infestations aren’t necessarily getting worse, but they just continue to spread after first being seen in New Westminster in 2001. Not only is this response contradictory within itself, by saying they are not necessarily getting worse, and they are just spreading, he takes the position that the beetles have been in North Delta for more than 10 years. So, is he saying the city won’t help
its residents combat the infestation because the beetles now have tenure? Finally, he puts the onus on the landowner implying we should infest our lawns with more clover. So, if one were to look for a throughline to their next approach to a pest problem (such as tent caterpillars), would the city suggest residents remove our trees to let the caterpillars spread throughout our neighbourhoods? The City of Delta gets an A+ rating from me on the way it manages almost every item on its agenda. Why is this response so contrary to its otherwise sterling track record of governance? Steve Simpson
Kudos to Delta firefighters, and sorry for your loss Editor: On Jan. 14, I experienced a flood in my condo at Tsatsu Shores. A pipe next door burst during the extreme cold that we had and flooded my unit as well as a few others. The fire department came, and I can’t
say enough about how wonderful they were. They actually shovelled water out the front door and moved furniture around to save it and were just really helpful and reassuring. They were there for quite a while and worked
very hard in the freezing cold. I can’t thank them enough. They certainly are heroes. I would also like to extend my condolences on the loss of their fellow firefighter. Joey Kerr

is ‘a special sign area’ Editor: One of the issues that doesn’t seem to have come up in the discussion of the new Ladner Village sign is the fact that the sign does not appear to comply with the Delta’s sign bylaw. I would note that the sign bylaw was last updated in 2001 and still refers to “The Corporation of Delta.” Perhaps it is the bylaw that is at fault? The bylaw, among other things, designates the village as “Ladner Village Special Sign Area,” an area in which
freestanding signs cannot exceed 1.8 m in height. The bylaw also controls lighting to indirect and does not permit backlit signs. The bylaw further states that a sign “must not detract from the character of an area.” I have seen zoning and construction applications delayed over the failure to either submit a sign plan or comply with the sign bylaw. Should not the same rules apply to the city? Brian Hart
New condos, sign = progress Editor: Why has the Ladner Village sign sparked such heated online discussions? People, it’s a sign. It identifies a location. It’s modern and suited for the progressive development that is about to take place in our community.
Coun. Dylan Kruger’s comments about his passion about preserving our community were heartening. He also stated that council approved the concept, but it doesn’t approve everything. Then why do you need to present a development plan for approval?
He also stated that he wants to keep in touch with the community, to protect what’s great about the village. Has he forgotten about the tower that is going to be built in the village? I guess that’s progress, like the sign. Bill Popovic

Editor: I was dismayed to read the city’s response to widespread criticism of the Ladner Village sign placed at the new Westham Square Plaza (Optimist, Feb. 1). Acting Mayor/Coun. Dylan Kruger seemed to be in downplay mode, whether it be on the topic of the city’s role in approving it, the general tenor of the response, or its overall community impact. We were even treated to the old trope of not “governing based on Facebook,” which could only serve to dismiss online community groups that have become (like it or not) a kind of virtual town square. It was not all that long ago that the city was using words like “prominent”, vibrant”, and “historic” in relation to the incoming plaza. The “Watch This Space!” sign that sat at the corner in advance of construction was undoubt-
edly placed to build anticipation for a showpiece project that would welcome visitors and induce pride in locals. At the time, the signage to be installed was billed as “iconic.” Now that the plaza is complete, the community is being told to move on. This council has bigger plans to revitalize the village, doncha know? We’re told this project is inconsequential in a grand scheme that includes waterfront and Seven Seas site redevelopment. “Signs will come and go”, our elected representative tells us. With respect, I think it’s essential that this council take action based on the immediate and overwhelming feedback received here. Our community deserves a beacon that reflects Ladner’s history and character, not an uninspired eyesore. Jordon Miller

Dumped boulders remain fronting Delta seawall SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Some residents are still asking what’s up with a large pile of rocks dumped beside the Boundary Bay seawall. The City of Delta last fall issued a stop -work order on a new, singledetached house under
construction at 126 Centennial Parkway after a large pile of rocks and boulders was deposited over the fronting seawall. Nearby residents raised the alarm about the rocks being dumped on to the beach as a previous house on the site was being demolished. According to Delta’s
planning department at the time, the city issued a permit to construct the new house in September 2023. In conjunction with the building permit, an additional permit was issued for repair works to the existing seawall, which was limited to manual repairs of cracks in the
seawall and, if needed, access through the beach by foot. No modifications to the foreshore were permitted without the Department of Fisheries and Oceans approval. But in October, the city received a complaint about rocks dumped on the beachside.
NOTICE OF INTENTION TO CLOSE A ROAD AND CANCEL THE DEDICATION OF THE ROAD (Pursuant to Sections 40 and 94 of the Community Charter ) TAKE NOTICE that City of Delta (“Delta”) intends to stop up, close and cancel the dedication as highway of that approximately 0.795 hectares of road (River Road) situated north of 7831 Vantage Way near Huston Road and River Way as shown outlined in bold and identified as “Road To Be Closed Lot 1” on Reference Plan EPP128988 accompanying this Notice (the “Subject Property”). This portion of River Road was created by Plan 78010. Bylaw cited as River Road Closure and Cancellation Bylaw No. 8310, 2023 (“Bylaw 8310”), will result in the Subject Property ceasing to be a public highway and title shall be vested in the City of Delta. The large pile of rocks placed on the beach last fall had nearby residents angered. The city then posted a stop-work order for works contravening the building permit. The planning department at the time noted the city was working with the DFO to receive approvals for the rock material to be removed from the federal seaside land. In an update this week, the planning department noted that the city received feedback from the assigned DFO officer in November. That officer indicated that the city could proceed with removing the stopwork order for the con-
struction on the private property, as the DFO’s assessment would take some time to complete. The investigation into the placement of the rocks, as well as any remedial actions required, remains ongoing, while Delta staff continue to monitor the construction site and respond to concerns by residents. According to BC Assessment, the total value of the property, as of July 1, 2024, was $3,286,100. Now demolished, the old house was valued at under $20,000 of that amount.

Ladner Harbour boat basin fees increasing
The city assumed responsibility of the management and operation of the harbour in the late 1990s SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta council this week approved higher moorage fees at the Ladner Harbour boat basin. A staff report notes that the fees have been historically low to support the local fishing industry and have not increased in a number of years. Staff reviewed rates at other locations including
harbours and marinas at Port Hardy, Powell River, Sechelt, Steveston, Captain’s Cove and the Ladner Yacht Club. Despite the increased moorage rates, the new rates will remain low in comparison to other locations, according to staff. Monthly fees for larger commercial vessels are increasing at a greater percentage than the annual rates to provide

an incentive for vessel owners to choose the annual rate. Council also agreed that a yearly review of moorage fees should take place for inflationary adjustments. The federal govern-
ment owns the small craft harbour, which includes a boat basin located at the end of McNeely’s Way, approximately one kilometre west of Ladner Harbour Park. In 1998, the Department of Fisheries
and Oceans, Small Craft Harbours divested operation of its working harbours to local harbour authorities throughout Canada. That same year, the City of Delta signed a lease agreement with
the DFO, designated the Ladner Harbour Authority of the DFO’s Small Craft Harbour. The city assumed the responsibility of the management and operations. The lease is in place until March 31, 2038.

Delta planning sports field lighting upgrade Depending on funding, the replacement work would begin in summer 2025 at the natural turf field SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta has issued a request for proposals for the design of a sports field lighting upgrade at Dennison Park, in Tsawwassen. The city is seeking a consultant with experience in lighting upgrade projects with a specific emphasis on the conversion from traditional lighting systems to LED technology. The existing sports field lighting at the 7A Avenue park was installed in 2005 to provide lighting for a full-sized football field and an adjacent practice pitch. The successful bidder will be required to deliver a complete detailed design and tender documentation package on or before June 30, 2024. According to the request for bids,
contingent on funding availability, the City of Delta intends to tender the LED upgrade work at Dennison Park in spring 2025 with the goal of undertaking the physical works that summer. The city had also recently issued a request for tenders from qualified electrical contractors to undertake LED lighting conversions and control upgrades for the hockey and curling arenas at the North Delta Recreation Centre. Timelines will be blocked off for both arenas at the facility. The contractor is to have access to the curling rink on June 10, 2024, with the work to be substantially completed by June 28. Access to the ice rink would be June 29 this year with substantial completion by Aug. 16.

sediment or discolouration appears in someone’s water, run the cold water tap at the highest point in a premises for approximately 20 minutes or until it clears. Delta’s water system services an area of approximately 18,100 hectares including North Delta, Tsawwassen, Ladner, Tilbury, Annacis Island, Deltaport, Boundary Bay Airport and the BC Ferry Terminal. A staff report to council last summer noted that, in 2022, Delta provided drinking water in compliance with the BC Drinking Water Protection Act and the BC Drinking Water Protection Regulation. Staff had conducted approximately 1,324 water sample tests from the city’s drinking water distribution system, which were obtained from 34 sampling stations distributed throughout Delta. Samples were tested on-site for temperature, turbidity and chlorine residual, while an additional sample was sent to Metro Vancouver’s laboratory where it was tested for turbidity, chlorine residual, heterotrophic plate counts, total coliform bacteria and E.coli. In addition, tests for metals, vinyl chloride and disinfection by-products were conducted at several sampling sites, while detailed physical and chemical analysis were performed on the artesian well water sourced from Watershed Park. Based on the testing results from the program, Delta’s drinking water met the provincial requirement. The report also noted that of the samples taken, none tested positive for E.coli., however, one
tested positive for total coliforms. The city subsequently retested with a negative result, the report added. Meanwhile, there are currently about 76 kilometres of asbestoscement pipe being used in the municipal water system, but the city does not test for asbestos in the drinking water. Engineering director Steven Lan told the Optimist last year that the City of Delta operates the potable water system in compliance with applicable provincial and federal regulations, and follows Health Canada’s Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. Those guidelines advise that there is no evidence of adverse health effects from exposure to asbestos through drinking water and Health Canada has not adopted any guideline values. Delta’s water operations include repairing watermain breaks, annual watermain flushing, weekly water quality sampling, water valve maintenance, fire hydrant maintenance and other items. The water operations costs are offset by water service connection fees, inspection fees and other charges. The water capital program contains funding for water infrastructure renewal, including watermain replacements/ upgrades, pump stations, water meters and various other water capital items. When it comes to the ongoing replacing of pipes, Delta has an annual program to replace aging water infrastructure, including asbestoscement pipe. Between 2017 and 2021, the city has replaced 13 km of watermain, of which four km were asbestos-cement pipe.

One of the leaders of a Delta company that cleans mine wastewater has received an industry award for excellence in social and environmental responsibility. Lynda Smithard received the award from the Association of Mineral Exploration, for leadership in water and wastewater treatment, commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in the mining industry. Smithard is chief operating officer with McCue Engineering Contractors in Delta, which makes water and wastewater treatment systems. The company produces modular treatment systems that are loaded on to trucks and moved to mining sites, oil and gas plants, where they’re installed to treat domestic wastewater from camps, as well as wastewater from industrial processes. The water treatment is called Panaqua, in which treatment modules can be connected to each other or to other water treatment technologies for endless possibilities in water treatment, said a release from McCue. “The industry is evolv-

She described McCue Engineering as a cleantech company rather than mining company in her acceptance speech at the Association of Mineral Exploration Roundup Awards Gala in Vancouver, Jan. 24. McCue Engineering Contractors were chosen last June to treat the sewage water produced at Artemis Gold’s Blackwater Mine site, 160 km southwest of Prince George. The mine is expected to begin producing gold and silver this year and should produce for at least 22 years.

It has been commented by some observers that atheism is the fastest growing religion in the world. I cannot verify this claim, but I can say that, while I disagree with the atheist viewpoint, I respect the forthrightness and intellectual honesty of atheists who I know and have encountered, so I offer my brief answer to atheism as a respectful disagreement. Though atheism may not be considered an organized religion, atheists, like those who adhere to theistic faiths, ascribe to fundamental premises concerning reality. Whereas theists profess faith in God, or a higher being, atheists, believe that no such being exists. Most of the

popular proponents of atheism leave it at that— few, I have found, live into the fulness of what atheism means. If God does not exist, it means that there is no creator or designer of the universe. If God does not
exist, it means that life is a consequence of randomly acting forces and that the universe, life and the world, is one big fluke. If God does not exist, there is no ultimate purpose in life, and no solid foundation for morality. I believe that the reason most atheists do not behave as though nor live with the outlook that life is essentially meaningless and that there are no absolute moral values is because their hearts tell them otherwise—that there is, in fact, an absolute foundation for morality, a higher purpose in living, and a spiritual dimension to life. Even despite their differences, these are truths upon which that all faiths upholding belief in God can agree.

Reach Art for Autism auction showcases local artists
Bidding on Reach Child and Youth Development Society’s Fourth Annual Art for Autism fundraiser begins online on Feb. 11. The South Delta Artist’s Guild (SDAG) and South Delta Artisans and individual artists have provided painting, pottery, sculpture, and jewelry lots. In addition, wellloved community artist Sandra Taylor donated more than 25 paintings from her personal collection. This puts original local paintings back into circulation from many well-known names including William Allister and Marlene Strain. “Every dollar raised at Art for Autism goes directly to bridge funding shortfalls in Reach autism programs - getting more children and families the services they need,” said Reach events and donor development coordinator Tamara Veitch in a news release. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to
all of our donors, bidders and volunteers who make it possible.” Reach volunteers put in countless unpaid hours annually to support children with needs at Reach Society and the non-profit’s fundraising events would not be possible without them. Events committee volunteer Linda Edwards and SDAG’s Rod Winning were both pivotal in soliciting contributions from local artists. Without the generous artists and artisans who donate their artwork, the fundraiser would not be possible. The Art for Autism will be live at https://www. artauctionforautism.com/ for two weeks, ending at noon Feb. 26. Ladner artist presents new show in Vancouver

Federico Airaudo is an Ecuadorian artist currently based in Ladner and he is thrilled to present his first solo show in Vancouver.
Federico Airaudo is an Ecuadorian artist currently based in Ladner and he is thrilled to present his first solo show in Vancouver. The Slice of Life Gallery (1636 Venables St.) presents Habla from Feb. 8 to 11 with an opening reception on Feb. 8 from 7 to 11 p.m. As a figurative painter his work uses bright colours and humour to engage with political and satirical dimensions of public life in Ecuador, and more broadly Latin America. His work is recognized for its brimming detail, winding storylines, and characterization of human-animals, insects, and objects. Through these characters, he narrates the distinct, instinctual cultural mannerisms of Ecuador as they play out in multiple and often contradictory scenarios. Airaudo says Habla is an expression char-
acteristic of Guayaquil, Ecuador’s bustling port-city. Within the fast-paced flow of street commerce, the phrase is spoken as a playful nod, an invitation, and a call ‘to talk’. For Guayaquileños, everything happens within this talk. Through a series of lively visual scenarios that speak with the cultural rhythms and tensions of the port, his paintings re-animate the gregarious, yet often over-looked dialogues that figure Guayaquil. “I recently immigrated to Ladner and I’m excited to be able to present some of the social nuances and specificities of my country here in a Canadian context,” he said. “The paintings are a series of jam-packed, highly detailed, visual scenarios. My hope is that viewers get pulled into the details of these
scenes, and that they stay for a while to notice some of the everyday customs of this place, their ironies and contradictions.” Airaudo said he has always drawn since he can remember. “When I was young, I passed summers constantly filling notebook after notebook with sketches,” he recalled. “As a teenager I was really involved in surfing, and eventually the boards became my canvas. This was my informal transition into painting. I later studied creative publicity and design in Argentina. “I’m inspired by just watching people, noticing their mannerisms, gestures, and ways. I also find the process and challenge of painting really energizing.” -Submitted

door or require the use of a shower curtain. The result is a clean look that many people associate with a luxury hotel. When speaking with a contractor about an open shower install, homeowners can ask about a half-wall to safeguard against water splashing out of the shower. In addition, a heat lamp can help ensure residents stay warm until they’re ready to leave the bathroom. Heated features: Additional features to keep everyone calm and warm can be considered when upgrading the bathroom. Radiant flooring can ensure everyone’s toes remain toasty, and the installation of such a feature can eliminate the need for floor mats and bath mats that some homeowners may not like. Commit further to the heat theme with a heated towel rack, which is another feature associated with luxury hotels

that can be just as enjoyable at home. Soaking tub: An open shower creates an instant feeling of luxury, but few things are more suggestive of relaxation than a soaking tub. A long day at school or the office or a day when winter winds are howling outside is made much better with a good a soak. Skylight: Even if the goal of a luxury bathroom is to leave the outside world outside, allowing some natural light inside is a great way to add a little extra calm to the room. Floor-to-ceiling windows may seem appealing in brochures or advertisements, but such features do not create the sense of privacy many people prefer in their bathrooms. One or two skylights can create that sense of privacy and still allow for natural light to enter the room, making this an option

Homeowners want to view their homes as a respite from all that goes on outside their doors. Indeed, turning a home into a residents-only retreat can ensure everyone looks forward to walking through the front the door at the end of the day. One of the more popular ways to turn a home into one’s own personal retreat is to upgrade the bathroom. A renovated bathroom can completely transform how individuals feel about their homes. The following are some features to consider when remodeling a bathroom with relaxation in mind. Open shower: An open shower is a visually stunning addition to any bathroom. Such showers give a bathroom a more open look, thanks in part to the fact that these modern features do not feature a

Factors to consider when mulling a garage renovation Garages may rank below kitchens and bathrooms in the home renovation pecking order, but these unsung heroes of suburban dwellings deserve their day in the sun. It’s easy for garages to become convenient, if crowded and disorganized, storage spaces, but scores of homeowners are embracing the idea that renovated garages can serve a more functional purpose. Prior to beginning a garage renovation, homeowners can consider a host of factors that will guide the direction of the project and ultimately produce a more functional space. Appeal: Though many homeowners understandably want to ensure their homes are amenable to their own lifestyles without worrying about the effects a given project might have on resale value, it’s best that they do not completely ignore the latter variable. Following the pandemic and now that more people work from home, some may see a garage
converted into a home office space as more functional. Homeowners can speak with a local real estate agent to learn more about local buyers’ preferences before beginning a garage renovation project. Function of the space: It’s important to consider why you want to renovate the garage. Is it to build a designated home office space? A fully outfitted home gym? A home theater? An extra bedroom? An in-law’s suite? Each of these options are popular reasons to renovate a garage, and each may require a different approach during the project. The desired function also may affect the cost, so it’s best to identify precisely what the room will be used for post-renovation. The existing space: When mulling a garage renovation, contact a local garage conversion expert to audit the space. Such a professional can assess the existing space and determine what will need to be done beyond the design of the room. Will additional electri-
cal outlets need to be installed? Will the room require additional ventilation? Will a new doorway need to be created to allow for easier access? These are questions a qualified expert can answer. Some may estimate the cost as well, but it’s likely the garage expert will defer estimates regarding electric and ventilation to contractors who specialize in those areas. Storage: The home renovation experts at Angi estimate that the average garage remodel costs around $18,000. That’s considerably less than a home addition project, which can easily exceed six figures, so a garage remodel might be more budget-friendly than a room addition. However, homeowners should consider what’s currently in their garages and where those items will end up if the room is repurposed. If it’s primarily lawn care items and kids’ toys, a new shed with ample storage space might work. -Metro Creative

What to know about reseeding or replanting your lawn Spring marks the return of flowering plants and warm weather…and homeowners know that spring also ushers in the return of home renovation season. Homeowners undoubtedly have an extensive list of projects on their to-do list, and that may include helping their lawns and gardens recover after a long winter. Unpredictable weather, which can include drought and excessive rainfall and everything in between, can take its toll on a lawn. In certain instances, the best solution may be planting new grass, but homeowners can consider these tips before they begin the process of reseeding or replanting their lawns. Scarify the lawn: Scarifying a lawn can help to create a clean slate, but the timing must
(604) 999-3479
be right. Various lawn and garden experts recommend scarifying in spring or early autumn, but don’t jump the gun when scarifying in spring by scarifying before the lawn has started to grow after a dormant winter. Scarify when the soil is a little wet and the grass is once again actively growing. Scarfiying can remove any lingering weeds from last season and pull up any moss that might have taken hold over the winter. Without weeds and moss to contend with, freshly planted seeds are in better position to thrive. Work with a landscaping professional: Homeowners with manageable lawns can likely scarify their own lawns with a relatively inexpensive plug-in scarifier. However, scarifying can be a strenuous physical activity, particularly for homeowners with large
lawns. In such instances, homeowners can benefit from working with a qualified landscaping professional. Such a professional can scarify the lawn and subsequently reseed or replant new grass. Choosing the correct seed is a vital part of reseeding or replanting a lawn. Choosing seed may sound simple, but it’s a potentially complex decision that requires knowledge of the existing grass, including when to plant it. Certain grasses are best planted in spring or early fall, while others are best planted in summer. A qualified landscaping professional can identify the existing grass and plan the seeding or planting around this important detail. Prepare to water the lawn: Watering is vital to the longterm success and health of freshly planted grass seed. This
penny.vanhorn@stor-x.com
requires a daily commitment, and setting a multi-function hose nozzle or sprinkler to the mist setting once per day or more if it’s hot outside can increase the chances grass will grow in thick and strong. Keep the top two inches of the soil moist until the new grass reaches a mowing height of roughly three inches. Once that benchmark has been reached, watering frequency can be cut back to about twice per week, but now the soil should be deeply soaked instead of misted. The soaking will help roots grow deep into the soil. Spring is a great time for homeowners in various regions to reseed or replant their lawns. With the right approach, homeowners can enjoy a full and lush lawn throughout summer. -Metro Creative

SDSS sweeps Stebbings/Murray Cup games IAN JACQUES

Basketball bragging rights for the senior girls and senior boys goes to South Delta Secondary in 2024. On Monday night, the Sun Devils swept the Stebbings/Murray Cup games with the senior girls beating Delta Secondary 93-19 and the senior boys beating the Pacers 81-69. Both games were played at SDSS in front of a loud and boisterous gym of students and parent spectators. The annual exhibition games are played to honour former long-time coaches and Delta Sports Hall of Fame members Bob Stebbings and Neil Murray who gave so much to the sport at both schools. In the girls’ game, SDSS was led by Kaija Rutledge with 30 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Marin Marano had 12 points and five steals while Hayden McConnell had 11 points. It has been an up-and-down season so far for the Sun Devils. They started strong winning the Cascade Classic Tournament in Victoria and fared well at the 2023 Tsumura Basketball Invitational, but recent injuries have proven to be challenging for the team as they close out league play and fight for a berth at next month’s provincials in Langley. SDSS has two league games this week that are important for playoff seeding – playing Fleetwood and Seaquam and an exhibition game against Burnaby Central, ranked number six in AAAA. Last week, SDSS was ranked number eight in AAAA, but this week, they fell out of the top 10. “We feel we have a roster that can

Invitational in the fall going 2-2, had a trip to Hawaii over Christmas where they played several top teams and are off to a good start in league play. Coaches Carol Lingham and Bryan Lopez have a core group of seniors anchoring this year’s squad. “A lot of our starters had a lot of experience from last year, so the expectation is that we continue to perform and do well and execute,” he said. “It comes down to are you focused – focused in practice and focused in league games.” There are three berths out of the South Fraser zone for provincials with a lot of strong teams. “It’s not going to be easy,” said Lopez. “Hopefully teams stay healthy and whoever performs will get one of those berths.” DSS was led by another monster effort from Lucas Kosa who had 41 points. He had a 75-point game two weeks ago. It was one of the highest scoring games in provincial history. Head coach Will Khuu and assistant coach Jassi Sandhu said they are pleased with the Pacers’ start. “Lots of ups and downs. With the volleyball season, it was hard to get everyone out in December and the league schedule has been packed in January, so keeping guys physically and mentally in check has been a challenge,” said Khuu. “We have three returning seniors, so it’s a young team. We are 2-1 in league play and have lots to go before South Fraser’s. “We want to play in March and that’s been the goal since the start of the season, so we have to be ready to play every night. The league is wide open, and no one is unbeatable. If we play our best basketball, we can hang with anyone.”

Ladner’s Paxton to wear Dodger blue this season IAN JACQUES
Paxton pitched last year for the Boston Red Sox after battling back from a two-year recovery from Tommy John surgery. In 15 of his 19 starts with Boston, he had a 3.36 ERA and 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings. Paxton started his career in 2013 with the Seattle Mariners where he posted a 3.42 ERA in six seasons. He battled through injuries throughout his Mariners tenure making only 102 starts with the M’s. He then pitched for the New York Yankees where he made 29 starts with the Bronx Bombers

James Paxton is trading in Red Sox colours for Dodger blue. The veteran lefthander from Ladner has signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The deal is reported to be for $11 million, with a $1 million Opening Day roster bonus and $1 million in performance incentives. Paxton joins a revamped Dodgers rotation that now includes free agent signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow acquired in a trade.

in 2019. He has landed on the injured list 29 times in his career with injuries to his lat, left middle finger, forearm, left elbow flexor and his right hamstring, which he suffered in his spring training debut last year with the Red Sox, that pushed his regular season debut to May. Despite all the injuries, Paxton remains an effective starter, evident by the deal the Dodgers presented and the hopes that he has a bounceback season. Pitchers and catchers report to spring training for the Dodgers on Feb. 9.

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES
IN MEMORIAM
Walter Rasmussen’s Celebration of Life Will be held on March 2nd from 2 - 4 pm at the Harris Barn at 4140 Arthur Drive, Ladner.
FISHER, Peter John October 15, 1952 − January 24, 2024
Joyce More (Taylor) July 6, 1932 – February 13, 2023 Reflecting on one year after our Grandma’s passing. We miss her cheerful voice updating us on the latest Hollywood gossip and recent bus trips she took to River Rock and beyond. We miss how beautiful she was in outfits embellished with sequins, and accessorized with pieces from her retro jewelry collection, always completed with a brooch and sunglasses. We miss her ordering the best sundae or pie a la mode, and never a salad. We miss her stories of her independent travels around the world and many wonderful trips with Flo. We miss receiving her thoughtful notes and cards, often with “a little coffee money” tucked inside. We miss her infectious belly laugh and hearing her say her 90th birthday party was “the best one yet”. Her children Cher, Linda, and Kim (Marian) and grandchildren, Tobi, Kimmy (Steve), Evan, Adam (Angela), Adrian and great grandchildren, Kate and Sadie, Ava and Emma, Alex (Tara) Liv and Nate, Sandy (niece) and Bryce (great nephew), and her #1 fan Derek, miss her so much. We take comfort knowing that J is in the great casino in the sky with her sister, Flo. In honour of our Queen, we hope you will treat yourself to a coffee and a slice of pie today. We love you J. July 6, 1932 – February 13, 2023
CAMMISH, Daphne It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Nana and great Nana: Daphne Cammish on January 25, 2024. Daphne was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire and lived in England until she emigrated to Canada in 2008. Daphne is predeceased by her husband James (1993), her son Andew (1994) and daughter-in-law Julie (2019). As well, Daphne’s brother, Malcolm, sister Dorothy, son-in-law Alan, nephews David, and Stephen, and neice Pauline.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter John Fisher on January 24, 2024, in Victoria, BC, at the age of 71. Born in Edmonton, AB, growing up in Tsawwassen, BC, Peter lived his last 30 years in Oak Bay, where he oversaw the building of a new home in his retirement. Peter’s career weaved between private ventures and provincial government work, primarily in the manufacturing forest sector, and he spent time exploring many parts of the world. Peter is survived by his wife Heather and daughters Erica and Georgia (Matt), brothers Ross (Sandie) and Mike (Deb), along with beloved extended family. He will be remembered for his sense of humour, intelligence, and pride in his family’s accomplishments. A Celebration of Life will be held at a time and place to be announced.
Daphne was the proud mother to Wendy and sonin-law Sydney; proud Nana and great Nana to 8 grandchildren: Kana 18, Issey 16, Lila 12, Cohen 9, George 5, Ellie 2 and Alastair 2. She is also grandma to Louise 32 (living in Italy) and Jenna 30 (living in Mexico) (Louise and Jenna are the daughter’s of Andrew). She lived a full life and we celebrate her many accomplishments and fighting spirit.

Mum spent her last few weeks in KinVillage and we would like to acknowledge the caring and love that was shown to her by the nurses, care aids and especially Dr. Gemeinhardt. In Memory of Daphne, a service will be held at South Delta Baptist Church on Friday, February 16th at 11:30 am. We welcome all who wish to attend. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to KinVillage in Delta or BC Cancer Agency.
MERCER, Bill Bill passed away January 20, 2024. Survived by his wife Diana, his children James (Melissa), Robyn (Jeff), and Jack (Jackie); his grandchildren Jesse, Macklin, Thayer, River, Tyde and Olive; his sisters Daphne Frost and Mary Norris. He lived his life by happily following “life’s road less travelled” and left us with an “Irish Goodbye”.
February 8, 2024 The Delta Optimist A41 REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES
KRAAN, Anna (Jepma) In Loving Memory of Anna Kraan Anna Kraan (Jepma), a beacon of love and joy, passed away on January 21, 2024, at Peace Portal Seniors Village. Born on November 17, 1927, in Friesland, NL, she filled our lives with warmth, laughter, and an enduring sense of family. Anna’s journey led her from Friesland to Bussum, NL, where she married her beloved Gerrit Kraan in 1952. Together, they embarked on an adventure, immigrating to Canada in 1957 and settling in Ladner, BC. Over their 71 years of marriage, they adopted three children, and Anna found her true calling as a mother. A passionate homemaker, Anna’s joy was found in the simple pleasures of life. She adored spending time with her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren, infusing each moment with love. Her hands were skilled in needlepoint, crocheting, and knitting, but it was in the kitchen that she truly shone. Baking was her art, and her apple cake became a cherished staple at every family gathering.
MATTICE, Arthur James (Art) It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Arthur Mattice on January 26th. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years; Christine; son Ken and wife Alanna; grandchildren Kurtis and Sydney; daughter Laurie, husband George and children. We are devastated for the loss of such a profoundly impactful man, but we will continue to live each day with the gifts of love that he blessed us with and forever be grateful for how he contributed to our lives. Full obituary can be viewed at: https://www.asimplecremation.ca/tribute/arthurjames-mattice
WILSON, Lindsey Jay Sunrise: April 6, 1956 Sunset: January 27, 1924 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Lindsey. We invite those who were touched by Lindsey’s presence in their life to a celebration of his extraordinary life: Saturday February 10, 1924 Tsawwassen First Nation Recreation Centre 1929 Tsawwassen Drive, Tsawwassen, BC Services will begin at 10:00 am.
May the Sunshine of Comfort Dispel the Clouds of Despair
Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
Anna and Gerrit shared a love for travel, especially in their RV, creating lasting memories with family and friends. Her sense of humor was infectious, and her laughter resonated in the hearts of all who knew her. A dedicated church member, she lived a life marked by faith, compassion, and love. For 64 years, Anna called Ladner home, and her final 2 1/2 years were spent at Peace Portal Seniors Village, where the staff became her angels. The family extends heartfelt thanks for their exceptional care in her final days. Anna is preceded in death by her son Peter, grandson Jason, sister Siets (Hibma), and brothers Klaas, Jelle, and Tom. She is survived by her devoted husband Gerrit, daughter Betty-Ann (Don), son Wayne (Jeannette), 4 granddaughters, 4 grandsons, and 9 great-grandchildren. A celebration of Anna’s extraordinary life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a charity of your choice. Anna Kraan’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering family bonds. Her absence leaves a void, but her memory will forever be a source of inspiration and comfort. We will miss you, Oma.
