B.C.’s population jumping to eight million in two decades Mayor’s council seeks more transit funding to help with growth challenges PHIL MELNYCHUK
pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com
B.C.’s population will hit almost eight million within 22 years, an additional 2.4 million people, compared to today’s population. The numbers come from a new BC Stats report, which says the province’s population will grow by 44 per cent, to 7.9 million, by 2046. B.C.’s current population is 5.5 million, said a release last week from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. Delta Coun. Dylan Kruger said he’s not surprised at the numbers. “There’s no question … the growth is coming, whether we like it or not. People are moving to the Metro Vancouver region,” he said. “They’re moving to B.C. We owe it to society to build the homes and find the transit solutions
to move those people, or our existing housing crisis, our existing transportation challenges, will only continue to get worse.” Kruger supports the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation, part of TransLink, that is calling on senior governments to increase transit funding to keep up with the growing numbers. He produced a video to support the council’s Access for Everyone campaign that urges people to sign a petition seeking more money from senior governments. In particular, he wants Delta residents to add their names. Kruger says in the video the Metro Vancouver region, “will be home to a million new residents by 2050. “But to build the transit our region deserves, we need senior government to step up and support new sources
roads or lanes, completely separate from traffic. Kruger wants people to sign the petition, “so that our local MP and MLAs get the message.” “The region’s residents can’t afford to take on the cost of upgrading our transportation network alone,” he said. Kruger said the City of Delta’s latest numbers show that the city will have a population of 158,000 by 2051. The city though needs senior government help with infrastructure costs, particularly transit, in order to handle the growth that it’s been asked to take on. “We are expecting growth, but our growth in Delta is very moderate compared to other parts of the region,” he said. Mayors across Canada have been asking Ottawa to align its immigration plans with municipal

According to the new BC Stats report, Sustaining Growth: Population and Demography for B.C. and Canada, 78 percent of immigrants who arrived between 2016 and 2021, settled in Metro Vancouver. Access for Everyone says the transit system, “can’t keep up with demand as our region grows at a record pace, putting further pressure
on affordability. Time is running out . . .” The Access for Everyone plan, priced at $21 billion, calls for doubling bus service within a decade, (from 2022 levels) and adding nine new bus rapid transit lines. In Delta, that means doubling the bus service and upgrading the new rapid bus service on Scott Road to bus rapid transit. Bus rapid transit means buses have their own
housing starts, he added. “We need a coordinated approach when it comes to this country’s growth,” Kruger said, adding that Canada needs immigration because its population would decline otherwise. People are needed to fill jobs in the labour market, such as health care and construction. “So we need that growth … we do need better policy alignment to match the housing starts with federal targets.” But Kruger said he’s focused now on achieving Delta’s target of creating 3,607 extra housing units within the next five years, as ordered by the Ministry of Housing last September. Other parts of the Access for Everyone plan include building the gondola up Burnaby Mountain to SFU and planning for rapid transit to the North Shore.

City starts OCP review SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Major changes are on the way for the City of Delta’s Official Community Plan in the next few months. Planning staff made a presentation to council on Monday on a communications strategy to inform residents of the proposed changes and gather feedback. The consultations include a mail-out to all residents starting this week and upcoming information meetings. A report to council notes that the current OCP was originally adopted in 1985, but the objectives and policies guiding growth have become outdated and unable to support current housing priorities. The current OCP has
resulted in frequent applications for OCP amendments. There are currently 30 amendment applications under development review. An updated OCP will also increase opportunities for townhouses and apartments in areas with proximity to transit, services and infrastructure, while also allowing small-scale, multi-unit housing on residential lots. The planning department notes there are currently few opportunities to add such housing and they usually require lengthy amendment processes. The report also notes that a new OCP, which will require a public hearing before approval, is needed to align with new provincial housing
legislation and a target given to the city by government for new units. The city is also required to have a new OCP approved by June 30, 2024 to allow for small-scale housing. The report notes that in order for Delta to meet its housing target of 3,607 units in five years, the city needs to average 180 net new units receiving occupancy permits each quarter. In the city’s first quarter since the housing target was issued, between Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2023, Delta added 106 new units. Some of the other changes that will require significant work include simplifying land use designations and allowing bonus density for affordable housing and purpose-built rentals, the report adds.

Tsawwassen resident asks about noise from big jets Cargo, air ambulances, emergency flights among aircraft travelling to YVR at night VALERIE LEUNG
Ri c h m o n d N e ws
Ever wonder why there are the sounds of planes over Richmond in the middle of the night? Richmond is home to the country’s second-busiest airport, Vancouver International Airport (YVR), which has commercial, private and cargo aircraft flying in and out daily. A Tsawwassen resident was recently woken up at 3:40 a.m. by a jet flying over her house. The resident explained that multiple jets passed over her home at approximately 10-minute intervals, between 5 a.m. and midnight. Adriana Unger, spokesperson for the Vancouver Airport Authority, which manages YVR, said the airport is open 24 hours a day to “serve the travel
and business demands of the region. “Air traffic overnight is a combination of cargo and courier flights, which deliver time-sensitive packages, and scheduled passenger flights including some wide-body departures to Asia-Pacific,” said Unger. Furthermore, air ambulance, which transports patients to and from remote locations in B.C. to the Vancouver area for care at local hospitals also operates mostly at night using both helicopters and fixedwing aircraft. On average, there are 20 to 30 flights per night between midnight and 6 a.m., about three per cent of the total flights at YVR. Flights at night are conducted under noise abatement procedures that are designed to

air navigation service provider. Unger told the Richmond News, there has been no change to the airspace and flight paths at YVR since 2007. Increased air traffic over certain areas in Richmond and
other municipalities depends on which runway is active at the airport and the wind conditions on the airfield. Unger added YVR’s north runway is not used for any overnight flights aside from exceptions such as emergencies or planned maintenance work. For example, YVR had to use the north runway more during the airport’s South Airfield Rehabilitation Project in 2023, which caused increased noise last year. Work on the south runway was completed in December and regular use of the parallel runways resumed immediately, explained Unger. Flights that do not follow the night-time hour procedures can be fined by Transport Canada Civil Aviation Enforcement.

City ready to allow even more homes in subdivisions SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta council last week gave a preliminary OK to another pair of subdivision applications which can’t go to a public hearing, even if council wanted to do so. The first was a rezon-
ing application for a three-lot subdivision in the 6000-block of 44A Avenue in Ladner, which will see a 18,579-squarefoot lot split into three. An existing singledetached dwelling would be retained on one of the lots, while a new house with a secondary suite,
would be constructed on the other two. The planning department notes that the Official Community Plan designation for the site is single-family residential. The designation is intended for single-family housing at a certain density.
The proposed subdivision is consistent with that SFR designation. Mayor George Harvie pointed out that since the application is consistent with the current OCP, not only is a public hearing not required, but the city is barred from choosing to hold one under new

provincial housing legislation. The planning department also notes that while most homes in the designation are on lots 5,920-sq.-ft. or larger, there are provisions for small lots, clustered detached housing and duplex homes, especially in newly planned areas and larger infill sites. It’s the same story for the other subdivision approved by council, a rezoning and development variance permit for a two-lot split in the 5100-block of First Avenue, in Tsawwassen. An existing house on one lot would be remain, while a new house would be built on the new lot. The current total lot size is 17,377-sq.-ft. Meanwhile, the city’s planning department is about to launch its public consultation process for a proposed major OCP amendment which will pave the way for even more housing units allowed on single-family lots. That would also mean no public hearings for those applications as well. “Staff note that based on the recent provincial announcements, municipalities across British Columbia will be required
to amend their zoning bylaws to permit smallscale multi-unit housing on all single detached residential lots. “Once the zoning bylaw is updated, it is possible that the owner could consider additional units on each of the proposed lots without further council consideration,” a planning report on the Tsawwassen subdivision notes. According to the Ministry of Housing, in most areas in cities of more than 5,000 people, new legislation will require bylaws to allow for three-to-four units on lots currently zoned for single-family or duplex use, depending on lot size. Six units will be permitted on larger lots currently zoned for singlefamily or duplex use and close to transit stops with frequent service. Municipalities covered by the legislation may permit additional density, if desired, but cannot have bylaws that allow for fewer permitted units than the provincial legislation. The Housing Statutes Residential Development Amendment Act (Bill 44), requires cities to update their zoning bylaws by June 30, 2024.

DSS student organizes Delta blood donor clinic PHIL MELNYCHUK
pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com
Canadian Blood Services is constantly looking to replenish its supply of blood that many people will need at one time or another. In order to help out, a student at Delta Secondary is organizing a blood-donation clinic on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Grade 12 student Teaghan Papadopoulos is organizing the event to highlight the importance of donating blood and how it saves lives. The blood drive will take place in the west gym from 1 to 7:45 p.m. and is open to the public. However, in order to give blood, donors must register and book their appointment online and complete screening
questions. Papadopoulos organized the event as part of her Capstone Project, in memory of her late grandfather who, in 2020, was in hospital and required daily blood transfusions. This is when Papadopoulos realized the importance of blood donation. “For my Capstone, I wanted to do something that helps the community out. I know the need for blood is high and have seen firsthand how important it is for people to donate blood,” said Papadopoulos. “I thought arranging a clinic at the school would be a great way to raise awareness of the need to give blood and make it convenient for people in Ladner to donate.” Craig Nielsen, with
Canadian Blood Services, said that mobile blood donor clinics are not usually set up in schools because of scheduling. “However, after hearing Teaghan’s inspiring story, we felt we should make it happen. This is a great opportunity to inspire and educate young people to get involved in blood donation. Blood donor clinics are an essential part of our communities. Today’s students are the future of Canada’s Lifeline,” said Nielsen. The aim is to have 81 successful blood donations. Each blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives, he added. Following the clinic, as part of her Capstone project, Papadopoulos will prepare a slide show

OPINION
Guest editorial: Four policies to save journalism
L
ate last week, British Columbia Premier David Eby dropped some verbal firebombs as he went on a twominute tirade blasting BCE, the parent of Bell Media, after its announcement of 4,800 job cuts and the sale of 45 radio stations across Canada. He said, “The fact that they cannot find it possible with all of their MBAs to operate a few local news stations, in British Columbia, to ensure that people get accurate, impartial, reliable information in an age of disinformation and social media craziness, is such an abandonment of any idea of corporate responsibility … I find it reprehensible … I think it’s appalling.” He went on, “On behalf of all of the families, of the journalists, the media outlets, on behalf of all British Columbians that have watched their local news stations slowly turned to garbage by these companies, who now say, unsurprisingly, that there’s not a lot of support for them, I just want to say, shame on you.”
The premier’s outspoken support for local journalism was admirable. We hope that unwavering support and passion will continue into next week’s Speech from the Throne. There are four policies he can champion that will help support quality, public service reporting in the province. First, B.C. should follow Ontario’s example and exempt newspapers from extended producer responsibility fees. The capture of newspapers in B.C.’s regulation fails to recognize that newspaper is the product, not the packaging, and effectively subsidizes actual waste producers. The B.C. government exempts paperback romance novels and single-use paper towels from the regulation, yet it is trying to have publishers pay excessive fees to Recycle BC – a monopoly run by large retailers and packaged goods companies – which will most likely result in the direct loss of about 80 local journalism jobs in B.C. and the shuttering of some newspapers.
Second, Eby should direct 25 percent of the province’s domestic advertising spend to support local news. B.C.’s news publishers and other local media organizations have earned the trust of millions of British Columbians by providing news and information that is relevant and reliable. Like many provincial and municipal governments, B.C. does not disclose where provincial ad dollars are spent. Looking at the federal government’s most recent advertising report, we know that too many dollars are going to Facebook/ Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok – social media giants that do little to combat misinformation and disinformation. Third, Eby can borrow a page from Quebec’s approach and introduce a 35 percent refundable news media labour tax credit. This credit has saved jobs and put journalism on a more sustainable footing in that province. Fourth, Victoria could introduce a provincial program simi-
lar to the federal government’s Local Journalism Initiative or the California Local News Fellowship. Funding journalist positions in areas of news poverty, particularly in remote areas in the province, would help keep communities informed and connected. To date, the federal government has adopted a suite of policies designed to support quality public service journalism. Now is the time for other provincial governments, including B.C., to do the same. The Feb. 20 Speech from the Throne is the time to put Premier Eby’s passionate words into concrete action. The cost of inaction will result in the loss of journalism jobs, the shuttering of local media outlets, and a less-informed and less-engaged citizenry. Blurring the edge between city, food and farms
S
pring is just a couple of weeks away and some local farmers are already plowing their fields. The highways and back roads that crisscross Delta afford a fine opportunity to appreciate our vast fields of plenty. Driving around these areas can break down the hard line between farmland and our residential neighbourhoods and can give us pause to reflect on food and farming. I feel strangely dejavuish now, in the sense that 30-odd years ago, the
public was introduced to the idea of global warming and climate change. Although still contentious amongst skeptics and advocates, the global reach of climate change is brought to our attention daily. In the case of food and farming -- floods, droughts, crop failures, input costs and other factors that affect our food security should be alarming, or at the least, concerning. Educators, governments, policy makers and developers need to blur
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
the rural/urban edge, if only to stimulate awareness as how best to interact with and better comprehend our relationship
with food. We shouldn’t be as detached from understanding agri-food as most of us are. A fine way to witness the blur of the rural/ urban edge is to take the half-hour walk from the Tsawwassen Town Centre to Southlands Market Square, via the Sixth Avenue path. This wonderful stroll can offer a moment to witness real-world food production and consider the vast complexities within it. At a time when farming and food production is becoming increas-
ingly perilous, taking a thoughtful minute or two to better grasp and appreciate the function of our regional breadbaskets is not only appropriate, but critical. We need to do a better job in becoming agriliterate and to know who and how the custodians of our dinner tables manage in an ever-changing environment. Our empathy and support for farmers and all who participate in the multi-layered agrifood sector needs to be brought up a notch.

Letters
Letter on our health care missed the mark Editor: I am truly very happy that Kevin Davis’s experience (Optimist, letters, Feb. 1) with our healthcare system went well, and that he is OK. However, I think he missed the mark with his letter. It is amazing to highlight the good experiences that people have with our health-care system, however, to take one experience (especially when admitting they are fortunate to have a GP, and to be able to access them in a timely fashion), and make that the rationale for saying the system
is not that broken, is downplaying a very serious situation. We are fortunate that we have had a recent influx of family physicians and that people have come off our Fetch list, but there are still massive numbers of people who cannot access primary care (it was over 5,000 at one point - full disclosure, I do not have up-to-date numbers). Our health-care system is in significant crisis. Even those who have a GP can find it challenging to see them in a timely fashion. Without access to a
primary care provider, people are using the emergency department for issues that don’t need emergency care. We do not have an urgent-care centre locally and limited options for walk-in clinics. So, by all means, let’s celebrate when it goes well. But let’s not state the system is doing OK, when it clearly isn’t. It downplays the experiences that many people are having. It down plays the seriousness of lackof-access to care and it down plays the need for significant change in our health-care system. Heather Anderson

No answer on RBT2 from our MP Editor: Optimist reporter Phil Melnychuk recently interviewed Delta MP Carla Qualtrough asking what she had been up to in 2023. You might have expected her answer to his first question, “What has been your most challenging issue” - to have focused on one or more important local issues, but that didn’t happen. In fact, not once did she mention the most important issue in Delta in 2023, being the controversial approval of the Roberts Bank Terminal
2 project. With the City of Delta having opposed this project, along with the cities of Richmond and White Rock, would you not expect this topic to have been top of mind in answering this first question? This issue did not even garner a mention by Qualtrough in the Q&A, underlining the fact that, as MP for Delta, she has been consistently silent on the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project throughout the approval process. Is this not surprising, given that one of her roles as MP is to represent the interests of the
community? Would you not expect this topic to have come up, especially since the project has been roundly condemned as being environmentally disastrous for Canada’s top ecosystem by Canadian and international scientists and experts in wetlands ecology and the area widely is recognized for its biodiversity and providing critical overwintering grounds for the highest number of waterfowl and shorebirds found anywhere in Canada? Roger Emsley

The Delta School District is required to start developing a balanced budget for the coming school year.
School district starts budget process SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The Delta School District is starting its annual budget consultation process. Encouraging all families, staff, partners and rights-holders to participate, school board chair Val Windsor said in the previous two years, the district has invited participation by way of a public input session via Zoom. This year, however, to increase engagement, the district is trying a different approach. Residents will be able to provide feedback through a short online survey, or through more traditional methods such as email, mail or through to a school’s parent advisory committee. Those who take part can share what they
believe should be the school district’s priorities before March 18, while they can provide feedback on the draft budget, once it has been released, from April 19 to 23. The school district’s operating budget, approved by the board last year, did not contain significant cuts. Instead, decreased program areas were to have limited impact on students. That budget was aimed at mitigating risk and ensuring long-term sustainability by reducing the reliance on reserve funds. During the previous three years, the district saw a reduction in its reserves, due in part to the pandemic. The annual operating budget for 2023/24 is $187.3 million, up by $6.2 million from 2022/23. After enjoying the outdoors around Boundary Bay near 64th Street last fall, duck hunters and volunteers took to tidying up the area on Feb. 10. Thanks to the efforts of more than 20 volunteers, they picked up more than a ton of trash, litter and old shotgun shells. Most of what the volunteers found was plastic, of all types, bottles, containers, bags, lawn furniture, and bits and pieces that came off boats. Black History Month recognized in Delta PHIL MELNYCHUK
p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta city hall lights up in green, red, and yellow to celebrate Black History Month in February, but motorists on Hwy. 99, need only to give a nod in the direction of Deas Island Regional Park or Deas Slough to recognize the month even further. Both names come from John Sullivan Deas, who operated the leading salmon cannery on the Fraser River in the 1870s. Deas came to Canada from the U.S. in about 1862 and started canning salmon in 1871. He operated the cannery, which had three larger buildings, plus a wharf and sheds, until 1878. But even back then, salmon runs were unpredictable, with the cannery not able to fill 200,000 cans during the 1872 season. Deas sold the cannery in 1878 and relocated to Portland, Ore., and died two years later. Deas also hired a black artist, Grafton Tyler Brown, from the U.S., to design the labels for the canned salmon. B.C. Premier David Eby noted Black History Month is “a time to recognize, honour and celebrate the contributions of the Black community in building British Columbia into the place it is today.” In a news release, he pointed out that Mifflin Gibbs was the first Black person elected to office in what is now B.C. and who

encouraged B.C. to join Confederation. He also noted social worker Rosemary Brown, whose advocacy against sexism and racism led to her becoming the first Black woman elected to the B.C. legislature and Eleanor Collins, known as Canada’s “first lady of jazz.” “It is these inspirational lives and more that encourage us all to contribute to the well-being of our province, including by learning more about our history and those who have helped build our province,” Eby said. “Strengthening topics like Black history and other diverse cultural histories is key to ensuring all students are included and represented throughout their studies,” added Minister of Education and Child Care

At Ladner Pioneer Library, there’s an art nook activity inspired by Christian Robinson, an author and illustrator of children’s books, who values inclusivity. Children of every colour, background and condition of life can identify with his books, say staff at the library. The activity is based on an episode from Robinson’s video series called, Making Space. Participants can collage a map, then share their artwork for display in the art corner for the rest of the month. At the Tsawwassen Library, kids can fill out colouring sheets. In North Delta, the George Mackie Library evening book club read books written by black authors and will discuss them at its next meeting, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m., in the George Mackie Library. Readers can also read up on black history by going to the Fraser Valley Regional Library website at fvrl.ca and clicking on the “list” drop-down menu and typing in “black voices.” Library staff have curated a reading list on Black History Month. The library also has a book display marking the month. Clad in plaid: Delta’s Men in Kilts gets tough cleaning jobs done in good fun
Men in Kilts Surrey’s kilt-wearing cleaning crew are the ones to turn to for your most tough-to-tackle exterior cleaning projects When was the last time you did a deep clean of your house’s exterior? With the turning of a new season just around the corner, the time to start thinking about spring cleaning for the outside of your home (and restoring its curb appeal) is now. “The smart move is to get work done in February and March, so it’s all done before the sun comes out and you can enjoy the first good patio weather in a nice clean space,” says Jason Roberts, general manager of the Men in Kilts Surrey franchise, which specializes in exterior cleaning services in Delta, Surrey and White Rock for both residential and commercial properties. With over 20 years of experience, the Men in Kilts cleaning crew can tackle a range of exterior cleaning projects, including window cleaning (for both external windows and internal windows), pressure washing, house washing, roof washing, and moss removal, along with gutter cleaning that comes with a 12 month clog-free warranty.
In addition to the scale and impeccable quality of their work, it’s their brand identity of professional cleaners clad in plaid that makes Men in Kilts stand out. The idea to wear the iconic kilts on the job came from Men in Kilts founder Nicholas Brand, upon a suggestion made by a friend as a way of paying homage to Brand’s Scottish heritage. Brand’s wife Stacey sewed him his first working kilt as a recognizable visual for his window cleaning services, and the rest is history. Showing up for the job in their signature tartan has become a badge of pride for their kilt clad team of professionals, as well as a source for making personal connections with their clientele. “Our kilts represent how our organization is cut from another cloth,” says Roberts. “By wearing our tartan, we call attention to ourselves in a way that uniquely distinguishes us and creates a level of accountability. If we can’t live up to the plaid standard, we’re nothing but a gimmick, so we have to exceed expectations.” For Men in Kilts Delta/Surrey, it is an important cornerstone of the company culture for the team to get involved with the communities they serve by engaging in local events and initiatives. Since the early 2000s, the Men In Kilts team has proudly participated in the Steveston Salmon Festival and the Ladner May Days Parade. They have been involved in other community events such as the Tsawwassen Sun Festival, the North Delta Family Days Parade, the LBA Easter Parade, the Ladner Village Christmas Tree Lighting, and the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust’s Day at the Farm, along with the annual Ladner Fashion Fest for Camile’s Boutique and Angela’s Boutique as models (in their kilts) “We value the communities we live and work in,” says Roberts. “Because our kilts, like capes, afford us a lot of attention, we have a responsibility to make sure that the example we set is positive.” For all clients, Men in Kilts will provide a free in-person cleaning estimate, during which a technician will assess the job and provide a service estimate with a firm quote. Seniors and veterans in Delta receive a discount of 15% on services, and, from now until the end of March 2024, all Delta residents can enjoy a special promotion with a waived minimum charge of $300. Go to www.meninkilts.com/delta-bc to request your free cleaning estimate today. Men In Kilts’ tough-to-tackle cleaning team offers residential and commercial exterior cleaning services, including window cleaning, gutter cleaning, pressure washing and house washing, in Ladner and across Metro Vancouver.

My doctor stated that there are new Canadian recommendations for diagnosing high blood pressure. Can you tell me more about them?
What does it means to port your mortgage?
Hypertension Canada recently released new guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure in adults. For a healthy adult with no risk factors, normal resting blood pressure should be below 135mmHg systolic and at or below 85mmHg diastolic. For those with diabetes, blood pressure targets are now at or below 130mmHg systolic and at or below 80mmHg diastolic. If you have chronic kidney disease, over 70 or have other risk factors, the new targets are even lower.
More Canadians are starting to hear about porting a mortgage, and are wondering not only what that means, but also if it’s something they’ll benefit from. Porting a mortgage simply means taking your current mortgage, with its rates and terms, and moving it to another property. In a time of high interest rates porting obviously becomes more popular.
As February is Heart Health Month, keeping your blood pressure under control is just one of the ways to maintain a healthy heart. Come see me for further tips on Heart Health or to measure your blood pressure. “Your personal pharmacist is with you every step of the way” is not just a slogan – it is THE reason Paul Gibbons, Pharmacist/Owner at the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Tsawwassen, looks forward to helping you every day.

My friends keep telling me about how they sold scrap gold jewellery to you and how great your gold testing machine is.
This machine uses X-Ray technology to determine the purity of your gold, silver and platinum.
Jim Richardson, owner
Most people who do watch are fascinated and very impressed with the gold tester. I remember a lady coming in with a bag of gold nuggets. She was told that they were 14k. Our machine shoed that they were 22k and she received over $1,000 more than our competition offered. Another gentleman was told that his bracelet was 14k and we showed him that it was the 18k he thought it was.

I’ve had my new hearing aids for a few days, but they’re not performing exactly as I would like. Why?
Can you explain what type of machine and how it works?
Most dealers use an acid and need to estimate how much gold disappears, after the acid is applied, to determine the Karat.

ADVICE FROM THE PROFESSIONALS Is there any way to make dental freezing and injections more pleasant and painless? Digital Anesthetic is a technology that controls flow rate and pressure of the anesthesia during the injection. This method is significantly more comfortable than the traditional dental syringe and employs a technique that makes the injection virtually painless. This type of freezing shortens treatment time for every patient and best of all, pain management for the patient is phenomenal. Some people don’t even realize that freezing is taking place. It’s nice to see children, Dr. Raj Dhiman who have never had dental anesthesia, leave their visit 604-946-9588 never having to experience the “anxiety” associated with “Syringe-Type” delivery methods. Many patients who work would never schedule a procedure in the middle of the day because of profound and lasting anesthesia. With Digital Anesthetic system, patients are now willing to come in at any time, knowing they will be able to communicate effectively at their job. This method of freezing greatly decreases anxiety associated with dental 130 – 4977 Trenant Street, Delta treatment and makes life easier for both the dental smile@ladnerdentist.com team and the patient.

Port Guichon students support animal shelter
Student Create-It Club holds fundraisers Port Guichon Elementary students showed their love for animals recently by presenting a cheque for $602.40 to the Delta Community Animal Shelter. From September to December 2023, students in the school’s Create-It Club met twice a week and worked hard creating a variety of craft items to sell at two fundraising events. “We are so proud of the students – they did a tremendous job of creating and selling a variety of items at the craft fairs,” said Irma Beeksma
and Janice Rosychuk, Education Assistants, and leaders of the Create-It Club. “Their philanthropy is so inspiring. We look forward to seeing where their efforts take them next.” Delta Community Animal Shelter manager Ryan Voutilainen visited the school to meet the students and thank them for their efforts. He brought along a very friendly canine friend, Bacon, who is currently available for adoption at the shelter. The students were thrilled to meet them both.
“We’re extremely fortunate to have a facility such as the Delta Community Animal Shelter here in our community,” said Voutilainen. “Fundraising efforts such as the ones by Port Guichon Elementary’s students are so important in us being able to provide important medical support to animals in the shelter. It is encouraging to know that the students I met today, who are great ambassadors for animals, will be the leaders of tomorrow.” -Submitted by Delta School District

My tires have lots of tread left, but are quite old. Should they be replaced? Tires are subjected to many stresses and environmental factors throughout their life. While each manufacturer has their own recommendations for shelf life, industry best practices suggest a tire has expired after 10 years from their date of manufacture. In addition to age, a few other factors come into play such as storage conditions, temperature, and conditions of use.

strengthen marriages as a part of my job, and here is a go-to text for me to reference from the bible: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4). Now, the author isn’t talking about romantic relationships per se, but he imparts wisdom on what Christlike love looks like in the real world — counting the other person more significant than myself. In a world where this idea of “you need to do what makes you happy”
dominates our culture, God asserts that the most noble kind of love is where you humble yourself to look to the interest of the other and to serve the other person rather than yourself. In fact, the bible says that there is no greater love than to lay down your life for another (John 15:13). Self-sacrifice marks the epitome of true love. Whether you’ve purchased gifts or written poems to express your love for your significant other, I hope you will also demonstrate your love by counting your partner more significant than yourself. -Paul Park/Minister’s Minute

For those of you who are currently in a romantic relationship, I hope you had a meaningful time of celebrating your relationship on Valentine’s Day (or sometime this week). I understand that this day could feel overly commercialized in today’s culture with all the flowers, cards, chocolates, dine-outs, and other gifts, but marking a special day to express our love tangibly through gift giving, acts of service, and words of affirmation is not a bad idea. Ice Hawks meets North Van in playoff second round KATIE LAWRENCE-BALLOCH
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
With the regular season now wrapped, the Delta Ice Hawks are now looking ahead to the playoffs, starting on Feb. 20 at the Ladner Leisure Centre against the North Vancouver Wolf Pack. Delta finished second in the Tom Shaw Conference standings with a 34-11-1-2 record, totalling 71 points. They ended the season on a high note with a 7-3 win on Feb. 10 against the White Rock Whalers. The line of Mateo Sjoberg, Payton Hu, and Danylo Bereza has been absolutely buzzing over the last 10 games, scoring 67 points between them, including 13 in Saturday’s regular season finale. Hu and Bereza each finished the season tied with a team-leading
68 points. Another highlight in the last week of the season was long-time Hawk Carson Merriman becoming the team’s all-time leading scorer with 182 career points, passing former Delta captain Jordan Deyrmenjian. “It was special to see Carson become all-time franchise points leader and it couldn’t have been more fitting to happen on home ice and be assisted by his twin brother Conner,” said head coach and general manager Steve Robinson. “Carson is one of the most talented and hard-working players I’ve had the pleasure to coach over the years and no one is more deserving of the honour.” Merriman returned to the lineup with just two weeks left in the season, after spending nearly two months on the injured list, which was a running theme for the Hawks this season.

Long-time Hawk Carson Merriman become the team’s alltime leading scorer with 182 career points, passing former Delta captain Jordan Deyrmenjian. “It’s nice to see the team get healthy again,” said Robinson, who had a stint away from the team himself due to medi-
cal reasons. “I don’t think we have had a single game this year where we’ve dressed everybody that we thought
we’d have available to us, but we’re peaking at the right time with the right guys coming back, and I feel good about our chances at defending the title.” Delta has a bye in the first round before taking on thirdplace North Van in round two. Each team took three wins in the season series, and Robinson is looking forward to taking on “a strong opponent.” “They’ll definitely give us a good test and it won’t be an easy walk-over. I think it’s exactly what you want to make sure you’re coming out of that first round with that playoff vibe and being battle-tested enough that you’re ready for the next round,” he said. Ice chips: The playoff schedule against North Van is: Feb. 20 in Ladner, Feb. 22 and 24 in North Van, Feb 25 and 27 in Ladner, March 2 in North Van, March 3 in Ladner.
Local boys shine bright at the North American PSG Academy Cup In a display of talent and determination, three local boys from Tsawwassen have made their mark as part of the team that clinched the prestigious North American U12 Academy Cup. Hans Seitz, Luca Casas-Cardero, and Ryder Oldham have inspired the community with their gold medal achievement. The boys’ success has been praised by the famous Paris St. Germain Club in France, saying on their website, “PSG Academy North American Cup puts the spotlight on growing talent,” calling it a “resounding success.” Speaking about their experience, Ryder shared, “It’s been an amazing
journey, and we’re proud to bring the trophy to Canada, Vancouver and especially Tsawwassen.” Starting off with the South Delta United grassroots program, the boys have shown that this victory serves as a source of inspiration for young athletes in the community, proving with hard work and commitment, anything is possible. - Submitted PHOTO COURTESY PSG ACADEMY

REMEMBRANCES IN MEMORIAM
OBITUARIES
Pamela Mason March 27, 1954 - February 14, 2022 Our 32 years together were full of Love, Laughter, and Adventures. The memories we shared will last a lifetime. Thank you.
KUNZ, Ken
LGP
ADAMS, Major (Ret’d) CD Leslie Ronald November 14, 1939 - January 29, 2024
Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.
OBITUARIES
With great sadness we announce the passing of Les Adams at the age of 84. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Inge (Verhulst), children James (Jenny-Lynn), Brian, David (Lorena) and two granddaughters Payton and Bria, brothers Fred and Frank, sister Marion and many nephews and nieces.
WILSON, Lindsey Jay Sunrise: April 6, 1956 Sunset: January 27, 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Lindsey. Those who were touched by Lindsey’s presence in their life joined in a celebration of his extraordinary life, held on Saturday February 10, 2024 at Tsawwassen First Nation Recreation Centre 1929 Tsawwassen Drive, Tsawwassen, BC.
May the Sunshine of Comfort Dispel the Clouds of Despair
Les joined the Canadian Army as a solider apprentice in 1956. He was proud of his long and varied military career. All his posting were memorable, Winnipeg, Congo, Germany 3X, Middle East, Kingston, Ottawa and Vancouver but the one that stands out was as Headquarters and Signals Chief Warrant Officer, 4 CMBG, Lahr, Germany from where he was commissioned and returned to the home of the Signal Corps, Kingston, Ont. and later retired in 1996. He went on to serve as a Wildlife Control Officer with the Commissionaires at Vancouver International Airport. Les enjoyed flying at Boundary Bay Airport, helping with the Delta Football Club and many adventures camping with his boys. The family would like to thank the staff at Deltaview Care Home and those caregivers from Fraser Health. There will be a private family gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Good Samaritan Deltaview.
Ken was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan on June 23, 1931 to Ev and Henry Kunz. He had one sibling (Frank) now deceased. He was married to Corrine Chatfield and had three children; Keneva (Helgi) of Reykjavik, Iceland, Debra in California, now deceased and Kerry (Ingrid) who now reside in Vancouver. Ken joined Trans Canada Airlines in 1951 which later became Air Canada, he worked there for 33 years and 9 months, as an AME (Aircraft Maintenance Engineer) and retired in 1986. In 1983 Air Canada’s President personally presented Ken with the award of excellence for his extraordinary service to the company. His career with Air Canada began in Winnipeg with a short period of time in Toronto. He transferred to Vancouver in 1979. Additionally, he spent one year in Columbo Sri Lanka on an Air Canada maintenance contract. Ken enjoyed skiing, motorcycle hill climbing and stock car racing (early days), boating, but most of all he truly loved flying. He flew light aircraft for 49 years from 1959 to 2008, and owned a number of different light aircraft. His favourite plane was the amphibious Seebee aircraft. He rebuilt three of them at the Boundary Bay Airport, in his home away from home hangar. He often reminisced about his happy times on hanger row at the BB airport. When it came to light aircraft there was little that Ken did not know. Ken was an ambitious entrepreneur and tackled many different jobs, such as building two gas stations at Point Roberts as well as building two houses. He built a pool installation business in Winnipeg and in his later years he invented a medical devise now being marketed. Ken would tackle any project without fear and would always “figure it out”. Additionally, he loved to help others. He met his soul mate Ann Senko in 1997 and they liked to travel both by air and sea, and in 1999 they went from Petersburg Alaska to Vancouver in their boat. Ken passed away peacefully on February 01, 2024, surrounded by a large group of family members. He will be missed dearly.
February 15, 2024 The Delta Optimist A37 REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES
Love’s greatest gift is remembrance DOMONKOS, Les (Laszlo) April 21, 1944 - December 3, 2023 It saddens me to let everyone know that we lost a loving man who would do anything for anyone; my husband Les. I lost the love of my life, my everything. I am trying to find the strength to navigate this new path without him, but I know he would only want us to keep him close to our hearts and cherish the memories we all share of him to help us move forward. Your footsteps can never be filled, nor your love ever forgotten. We love you and miss you more than words can express. Family was everything to Les. Married to Myrna, his wife 54 years. Three wonderful sons; Brent (Meghan), Martin (Jacquie), Steven (Christy), and eight beautiful grandkids who he loved so much; Carter, Malcolm, Andrew, Nathan, Natalie, Tyler, Cole and Keria. Love you, Grandpa.
OLSEN, Evelyn 1928 - 2024 After 95 years on earth Mum made her final departure January 22nd. She has left her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with a treasure trove of memories, shared experiences, wisdom, generosity and laughter. Mum was curious about the world, the people and places in it, travelling solo most of her life. Finding herself a single parent without a high school diploma in her mid 30s, mum managed to complete her education with a BA from UBC at 44. She then went on to work as a teacher-librarian with the Surrey School Board until retiring at 65. Mum spent the next 10 years volunteering at McKee House, lawn bowling, travelling the world and babysitting her 5 grandchildren. Her love of nature and the world around her continued even as her eyesight and mobility failed. Quoting a verse from mum’s favourite Neil Young song “Harvest Moon” “There’s a full moon rising Let’s go dancing in the light We know where the music’s playing Let’s go out and feel the night”
BAKER, Sheila (1938 - 2024) ARUNDEL, Robert William (Willy) May 22, 1960 - February 3, 2024 With great sadness we announce the passing of Willy. He is survived by Shelley, his wife of 32 years, their adult sons, Robby and Joey, siblings, Gina (John), Kathy (Rob), John (Iris), 9 nieces, and nephews, 7 great nieces and nephews. Willy attended Delta Secondary where he maintained top grades while playing basketball, soccer, swimming, and other extra-curricular activities. Also, he worked on Seine boats in the summers and into his early twenties. He graduated from BCIT in International Business followed by extensive travel, looking for the right entrepreneurial opportunity. Willy started importing products through a business he started with friends from BCIT. He then worked with Guenter Wettig, a Master German Sausage maker, to create a salmon hot dog, salmon burger and seafood pate (spreads). The pate business lasted his lifetime. Meeting Shelley, who grew up in a fishing family, was a turning point in Willy’s life. She could fillet fish, shuck oysters, drive a stick shift and ski. They married in 1992 and spent time to ski as many mountains in North America as possible. They then searched for a processing plant to invest in to process retort pouching of salmon, process minced salmon and to continue with the salmon spread business. Willy accepted all the ups and downs in his life’s experiences to create a path that would lead to a journey of innovation and success in his business after many years. He included his sons from an early age in all aspects of working. Willy valued sharing his time generously with all his extended family, youth sports teams, and other local organizations. He was actively involved in making sure his boys learned to ski, snowboard, camp, hike, take care of pets, value physical work and swim well. Willy was a one-of-a-kind, energetic, hardworking, generous, and happy person. He was exceptionally smart and not easily swayed to do anything that wasn’t interesting to him. We are heartbroken that he left too soon. We are certain he lived his best life, his way, from the very start. Willy wants all of us to do the same. He had respect for everyone and often said it’s okay, whatever you do, if you love your family, follow your passions or interests, ask lots of questions and be kind and honest.
Sheila was born in 1938 in Sunderland, England and did her Nursing Training including Midwifery before immigrating to Canada when she was 22. In Canada, Sheila studied at the Montréal Neurological Institute and worked at the Vancouver General Hospital before her first marriage in 1963. Outside of her passion for nursing, Sheila was an avid skier and skied the slopes of Canada, the US, and France until her late sixties. She also played tennis competitively at a local club in Tsawwassen, was a member of the Boy Scouts of Canada, and volunteered with a Child Abuse Team for ten years. After her first marriage ended, Sheila took the Nursing Refresher Course, left Tsawwassen, and went back to work - and loved it! In 1989, after five years in Vancouver, Sheila met and married Bill Baker. They were together for almost 35 years. After Sheila successfully conquered breast cancer, the two travelled all over the world. Bill taught her how to snorkel, and well-known reefs became the focus of their travels. Their most memorable trip was eight weeks in Southeast Asia, snorkeling off Phuket in the Andaman Sea, Tioman Island in the South China Sea, Bali, and Borneo. Sheila died on February 4th, 2024 and will be missed by her friends and many of the staff at The Waterford, where she lived with her beloved husband Bill. She will also be remembered and deeply missed by her sons Chris (Susan) and Phil, and beautiful grand-daughters Jena, Chloe, and Avery.

PRIBULA, Arlene Arlene Pribula passed away peacefully at Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, B.C. on February 6th, 2024. She was 86 years old. Arlene is survived by her son Mark, her daughter-in law Melissa and her two grandchildren, Isabelle and Jackson. Arlene was born in Edmonton, Alberta and grew up on a farm. She eventually moved to Westlock, Alberta where her family took roots. Her mother (Erna) and father (Adolph) had five children and they grew up a happy hard-working family. When Arlene became an adult, she left Westlock with her girlfriends and headed to Jasper, Alberta, which eventually brought her to Vancouver where she met her husband, Bill. Bill and Arlene were married for almost 40 years until Bill’s death in 2005. In 1969, Arlene and Bill adopted their son Mark William and settled in Richmond, BC where they lived for 25 years. After retiring, they moved to Tsawwassen, BC where they both lived out their days. Arlene had many jobs but her two favorites were being a hostess at Hy’s restaurant, and meeting many famous celebrities and sports heroes, and working in payroll at the Richmond School Board where she made great life-long friends. Arlene had many interests including golf, travel, dining with friends, volunteering at Variety Club and occasionally hitting the casino. The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses that have cared for Arlene over the last few months and a special thanks to Irene Thomas Hospice that took such great care of her for the last part of her life. Arlene’s Celebration of Life is being held on Friday, February 16th at Red Barn in Southlands at 6333 Market Avenue, Delta, BC from 2pm to 4 pm.
