TheIntegrated HomicideInvestigation Teamannouncedthe chargeFriday.
AccordingtoIHIT inanewsrelease,on Sept.16,2023,Burnaby RCMPrespondedtoa reportofshotsfiredin the3400-blockofNorth Road.
Officersarrived andfoundadeceased man,lateridentifiedas 29-year-oldGagandeep Sandhu,ofAbbotsford, inanunderground parkade.
Shortlyafter,avehiclefirewasreported aroundGreenwood
StreetandBainbridge Avenue.Officerslocated ablackHondaPilot engulfedinflames.
IHITtookconduct oftheinvestigationandcontinued toworkcloselywith BurnabyRCMP,BC CoronersServiceand theIntegratedForensic IdentificationSection.
IHITsaidthrough partnershipsandintelligencesharingwith Abbotsfordpoliceand theFederalSeriousand OrganizedCrimeUnit, evidencewasobtained thatidentified32-yearoldMichaelJohal,of Delta,asasuspectin theconspiracytomurderSandhu.
OnFeb.21,withthe assistanceoftheDelta policeandtheLower MainlandIntegrated EmergencyResponse Team,Johalwasarrestedwithoutincident.
Subsequently,a chargewaslaidagainst Johalforconspiracy
tocommitmurder,in relationtothedeathof
Sandhu.“Intelligence sharingandstrongpartnerships,alongsidethe hardworkofourinvestigators,isfundamental toIHIT’ssuccess,”said Sgt.TimothyPierottiof IHIT.
“Thisremainsan openhomicideinvestigationandwestillask thatanyonewithinformation,whohasyet tospeaktothepolice, comesforward.”

DeanKeitschpleaded guiltytosevenofthe 13violationsandwas foundguilty of13violationsoftheFisheries Act.Aftera14-daytrial in2022and2023,Judge StevenMerricksentencedKeitschtopay finestotalling$250,000 andtoforfeitallseized gear(valuedatabout $80,000)inSecheltprovincialcourtonJan.31.
Thefinesrange from$100to$70,000
foroffencesthattook placestartingsometime betweenJune4andJuly 9,2020,andendingon July29ofthatyear.
Keitschwasfound tohavecommittedtwo countsoffishingfora speciesofshellfishina closedtime,twocounts offailingtoproduce registration/licenceon demand,eightcountsof failingtocomplywith thetermsandconditions ofalease/licence,and onecountofpurchasing, sellingorpossessingillegallycaughtfish,allat, ornear,Sechelt.
VanEgterensaid Keitschwascharged withfailingtokeep accuraterecordsinthe logbook.“Itwasn’treally worththepaperitwas writtenon,”vanEgteren said,andisconsidereda significantviolation.

“Giventheprovincialmandatetobuild morehousing,weknow Deltaisgrowingbeyond thecurrentsupplyof homes,”MayorGeorge Harviesaidinanews release.
Hesaidthepublicoutreacheffortsareaimed atensuringpeople understandtheproposed growthareas,andsothat residentscanprovide feedback.Deadlinefor theupdatingoftheOCP isJune30.
“Thisinputiscrucial forplanningourcommunity’sfuturevibrancy
andlivability,”Harvie said.
Theprovince announcedlast Septemberhousingtargetsfor10citiesinB.C. inordertocopewith populationgrowth.

InTsawwassen,the highestdensitywillbe centredon56thStreet and12thAvenue,while areasfarthernorthalong 56thStreetwillbea walkableplaceswitha mixofretailandresidentialunits.
Areasoutsidethe56th Streetcorridor,mainly single-familyhomes,are consideredsmall-scale residentialandwould allowsecondarysuites, coachhomesandgarden suites,oruptofourunits perlot.Parkingrules wouldrequireoneparkingspaceperunitbutno parkingspacesrequired forsmallstudiosuites
oranyunitswithin400 metresofaRapidBus stop.

The3Dmammography systemproducessharper, higher-resolutionimages
andprovidesamore comfortablemammographyexperiencefordiagnosticpatients.
3Dbreasttomosynthesis hasbeenproventodetect moreinvasivecancers than2D,especiallyfor patientswithincreasedtissuedensity.Thisstate-ofthe-arttechnologyserves tobetterassistinearly detectionofbreastcancer, whenitismosttreatable.

“Thesemakesand modelsaretargeted moreoftenbythieves,” Sandbergsaid.

Catalyticconverters arepartofavehicle’s exhaustandemission controlsystemandcontainpalladium,rhodium andplatinum,“andcan beremovedinminutes,” saidanewsreleasefrom theMinisterofPublic SafetyandSolicitor General.
Theministryadded there’sbeena“noticeableuptick”insuch theftsaspricesrisefor thepreciousmetalthey containandisasking forpublicinputvia,an onlinesurvey,onhow
InDelta,theseven most-targetedvehicles forcatalyticconverter thefts,indescending order,aretheHyundai Tucson,HyundaiSanta Fe,HondaAccord, MitsubishiRVR,Kia Sportage,HondaCRV andHondaOdyssey.
LastyearinDelta,213 suchtheftswerereported,withJanuary2023 beingparticularlyhigh with58thefts.Thenumberoftheftsofcatalytic convertersinJanuary ofthisyearhowever, droppedtoonlysix.
Sandbergsaidthat peopleoftenaskthat metalrecyclersbetargetedforenforcement,but policebelievemostconvertersarenotentering therecyclingstreamand insteadarejustshipped overseas,ortheprecious metalisremovedand sold.
Somemeasuresauto ownerscantaketostop thethieveryincludeantitheftdevicesforcatalytic converters,shieldsor cagesaroundthecatalyticconverter,alarms, or barrierstokeepsomeone fromcrawlingbeneath yourvehicle,aswellas parkinginplacesthat cankeepthievesfrom slitheringbeneathyour car.

OnWednesdaythesoundsof cheeringandlaughtercould beheardfromthe1,900Delta SchoolDistrictstudentsat SungodArenaattheannual BattleoftheBadges.
TheBattleoftheBadgesisahockey gamebetweentheDeltaPoliceDepartment andDeltaFireDepartmentandhasbeen heldannuallyhereinDeltaonPinkShirt Day.
IfyouarenotfamiliarwithPinkShirt Day,thedaywascreatedbyapairofGrade 12studentsfromNovaScotiawhowanted toshowtheirsupportforafellowstudent whohadbeenthetargetofbullyingattheir school–inpart–becausethestudentwore apinkshirt.
So,thesestudentsworepinkshirtsthemselvesandthedaywasborn.
PinkShirtDayhasbeenrecognizedasa dayofactionsince2007.
TheBattleoftheBadgesisagreatevent thatgathersthestudentsandhelpstoreinforcethemessagesofanti-bullying.Butas greatasthegameis,asarealloftheefforts ofourpolice,firefighters,schooldistrictand cityofficials,moreactionisneeded.
Therehavenowbeen15PinkShirtDays and atleastfiveBattleoftheBadgeshockey games.Thereisnoquestionthatawareness ishighinthedaysbeforeandonPinkShirt Day,butwhatishappeningtheother364 daysoftheyear?
Weneedtofindways,collectivelyasa society,todomorethanjusttalkaboutbullyinganditseffectsonPinkShirtDay.

Perhapsit’snotsurprisingthat,afterhavingsuchunlikely births,FinnandAdleyshareafewmorecoincidences.

Fouryearsago,theywerebornat thesamehospitalwithinhoursofone another,yetonthisyear’sbirthday,they willbothbeturningone.Orisitfour? Orisit,asonemomsays,four-ish?
NeitherFinn’snorAdley’sparents wereexpectingLeapYearbabieswhen theyarrivedattheRichmondHospital justaftertheworldhadgoneintopandemiclockdownin2020.But,asthey wereabouttodiscover,theyweren’t goingtohavemuchsayinthematter.
JacquelineHansonwasfirstadmitted tothehospitalonherFeb.21duedate; fourdayslater,Finnwasstillnotshowinganysignsthathewantedtocome out,soJacquelineandherhusband DanwenthometoTsawwassen.She wasadmittedbacktothehospitalon Feb.27.
“Iwasinducedfourtimesandonly thelasttypeofinductionontheeveningofFeb.28seemedtobeworking,” JacquelinetoldtheOptimist.“Onthe 29th,thingsstartedhappening,butit gottoapointintheafternoonwhere thedoctorswere,like,‘Okay.Youcan haveaC-section,orwecantrythis oneotherthing.’Iwas,‘No.We’redone here.’”
Finnwasbornbycaesariansectionat 4:46p.m.onFeb.29,2020.

nowayI’mhavingthiskidadayearly onthisdayofalldays.Ididn’tevencall myhusbanduntilIwasfarintolabour. HewasgolfingatTsawwassenSprings, sohehadtodrivehomeandtakemeto thehospital.
“Ididn’tevenmakeittothedelivery room.Iwasdeliveringherinachairas wewererollingtoaroom.Wearrivedat thehospitalat1:42andAdleywasborn at1:47.”

Cognitivedecline
Acertaindegreeofmemorylossisa naturalcomponentofaging.Forgetting whereyouleftyourkeysorhaving troubleputtinganametoafacecanbe arandomandfrustratingoccurrence. However,dementias,likeAlzheimer’s disease,arenotasideeffectofaging.As manyasoneinfiveseniorsexperiences mentalhealthissuesthatarenotassociatedwithaging,andithelpstolearnthe earlywarningsignsofdementia.Such recognitionmaycompelindividualsto seektreatmentthatcanslowtheprogressionofthedisease.

HeissurvivedbyhisdaughtersLindaJones (Michael),MornaEdmundson,MaryJoyce(“Jo”) Twaites(Bob),andsisterJoyce.Predeceasedin 2021byGinny,hislovingwifeof70years.Donwas alovinggrandfathertoBryan,Leslie,Laurie,Julie, James,Owenandtheirpartners,andgreat grandchildrenElliotandFinley.
Throughouttheirlonglifetogether,DonandGinny demonstratedanexemplaryrespectforothers throughtheiractionsandwords,settingan importantstandardofbehaviourfortheirfamilythat willbetheirenduringlegacy.
Donwasalifelongscientistandcuriousthinker, servingtheworldwidecommunityasaprofessorof geophysicsforover30yearsattheUniversityof BritishColumbia. Heenjoyedkeepingintouchwith formerstudentsandcolleaguesfromaroundthe globe.Duringtheirlongmarriage,heandGinny livedfor sometimeonfourcontinents.Donand Ginnyjoined AllSaintsAnglicanChurchinLadnerin 1991.Donwill bemissedbyhischurchfriends,many peoplearound theworld,andstaffandresidentsat AugustineHouseinLadner,wheretheymovedin 2019.

ItiswithgreatsadnessandheartachethatweannouncethepassingofPeter FrederickMould.Hepassedawayattheageof84athishomeinLadner surroundedbyfamily.Peterpassedawaypeacefullyaftertheadministrationof MAIDduetohavingterminalprostatecancer.
Peterwaspredeceasedbyhisparents,FrederickandWinnifredMould,his spouseof56years,MargeMould(December24th,2019),brothers-in-lawRon HickeyandPhilPodovenikoff,andsister-in-lawIlenePodovenikoff.Peteris survivedbyhissonsDarinMouldandJasonMould(Shannon),hisbrother Michael(Unice),grandsonNoah,sister-in-lawKayHickey,nieceRhonda Noviello(Peter),nephewBrianHickey(Sylvia),andhispartnerAnnStirling,and manyclosefriends.
PeterwasborninVictoriaonAugust29th1939andistheolderbrotherof Michael.Peter’sfatherwasamechanicandSuperintendentatNational Motors inVictoriaforover40years.Peterworkedatthemillwhilegoingtohighschool andthenworkedatBCHydroafterhighschool.WhileworkingatBCHydro, PetercompletedhisCMAaccountingdesignation.Peter’struepassionwas realestateandhewastheVicePresidentofCenturyGroupinTsawwassenfor 25yearsfrom1975until2000.
Peterplayedmanysportsgrowingupincludingbaseball,golfandwaterskiing andhelpedcoachJason’sbaseballandsoccerteams.
Peterbelievedingivingbacktothecommunity.HewastheChairmanofthe BuildingCommitteefortheconstructionoftheKinsmenRetirementCentrein 1975.HewasamemberoftheKinsmenorganizationformanyyearsandmany charityprojects.
PeterandMargeenjoyedtravellingandadventure.Margewasknownasthe “Time-ShareQueen”asshewassosuccessfulatmakingtradestofabulous resortsaroundtheworld.Theytravelledto77countriesduringtheirlifetimeand havemanygreatstoriesandmemories.InMay1964aftertheyweremarried, theysoldeverythingandembarkedonatwoyeartriparoundtheworldand theysailedonthebrandnew“PandOcruiseshipCanberra”fromVancouver viathePanamaCanaltoLondon,England.InLondon,theyboughtavanand drovethroughScandinavia,Europe,NorthAfrica,Asia,MiddleEastandIndia.In India,theyboardedacruiseshipthattookthemtoAustraliaandtheytravelled andworkedinAustraliafor10months.TheythentravelledtoAsiaandJapan andbacktotheUSAandCanada.
Inrecentyears,PeterandAnnhaveenjoyedmanyvacationstoMexicoduring thewintermonthsandtripstoVancouverfortheJazzFestivalandVancouver Island.Theyledanactivelifestyleandwenthiking,biking,andwalkingasmuch aspossible.
ThefamilywouldliketothankDr.JasonKasonfortheexcellentadviceandcare whilePeterexperiencedprostatecancerformanyyears.

Violahadalonglifeworthcelebrating.Shewas bornonherparents’PeterandJustinaBergman’s farmnearBorden,Saskatchewan,thesecondof fourgirls.Sherecountedstoriesoflifebefore electricity,goingtoschoolbysleigh,playingwith hersistersandaneventualmovetothetownof HepburnwhereshemetAlfredSchmidt.
Shortlyaftermarriagein1950,ViandAlfsurviveda frighteningcaraccidentanddevotedtheirlivesto Christianservice.TheymovedtoFresno,California forseminarystudy,toQuebecandBelgiumfor Frenchstudies,andfinallytotheCongoin1959to beteacherswithMennoniteBrethrenMissionsand Services.
Despitehavingtofleedangerousrebellionsinthe firstyears,AlfandViperseveredwiththeirworkin theCongo.Vihadfourchildrenandtaught women’sclassesinsubjectsrangingfromliteracy tohomeeconomicsspendingnearly20yearsin theCongo.Alongthewayshecametospeakfive languages.
TheyreturnedtoRegina,Saskatchewan,inthe mid-1980swhereViworkedforSaskPower.In retirement,shemovedtoAbbotsfordandthen Tsawwassen,B.C.tobenearchildren.
ViwasadedicatedchurchmemberatCedarPark ChurchinLadner.Shelovedmusicandsanginthe DeltaCommunityChoir.Shevolunteeredatthe localthriftstoreaswellasTsawwassenflushot andbabyclinics.Inherretirementshealsowrotea biographyofheryoungersisterAlvina,anursewho diedasayoungmotherfrombreastcancer.Inher finalyearsVilovedherfriendshipsatSt.David’s SeniorsHouse.Toherfriendsandfamilyshewas alwayspositiveandencouraging.
