Firefightershealthy snackprogram helpsfillempty tummies

Delta firefighters continue to fill hungry tummies of childreninneed here in Delta

On Thursday (June6), the Optimist was invited by the Delta Firefighters’ Charitable Society to Fire Hall No. 3,in North Delta, forthefinal healthy snack food prep anddrop-off day ofthe school year.

Firefighters, volunteering theirtimeoffshift, were busy packing up boxes ofgranola bars, freshfruitand veggies, peperoni sticks, boxes of crackers, juice boxes – evenbread for peanut butterand jelly sandwiches – all to be delivered that day to 30 elementar y schools across North and South Delta

The firefighters picked up all thegroceries, which were organized and ready forpick-up that morning at Costco.

“The last few years we have been able to add in alotmore–like fresh produce, yogurt and cheese,” he said.

“Mr. Noodles is also

Last month, the Charitable Society,

alongside several corporate sponsorsand theCity of Delta, hosted itsfundraising Mayor’s Charitable Ball at the Cascades Delta Casino raising more than $600,000.

“That funding will

go right back to this program. We have now secured somefunding for thisprogram forthenext couple of years, which isgreat. Our aimis to achieve self-sustainability,” he said.

“Now, we donot have

“Oneofthe benefitsof that whole event was to raise awareness offood insecurity in Delta.I don’tthinkas many people know ofthe level of food insecurity in Delta, so that event was reallya good eye-openerfor a lot of people

Teachers understrain, andnew ones can’t afford the rent

education system within two years.

In the Delta school district, theissues are similar, but more at the day-to-day level.

A shortage of teachers-oncall to cover for teachers if they’re sick orofffor meetings or professionaldevelopment is oneconcern.

PHILMELNYCHUK

pmeln yc huk @d elta-optimis t. c om

A BCTF survey ofits teachers isshowing what many ofthem andthe public have heard before, that they’re stressed out and over worked.

For the second year, the teachers’ federationconducted a random survey ofits membersto learntheirconcerns andfoundthat teachers continue to face mental andphysicalhealthissues, are expected to do more withless and keep seeing students’ needs going unmet.

And15 percent ofthem say they’lllikely be out ofthe B.C.

According to the survey, 60 per cent of teachers saidthat adding more classroom teachers, specialistsor teacherson-call would have the most impact

“The lack of teachers-oncallis really concerning,” said Susan Yao, president ofthe Delta Teachers’ Association.

Teachers sometimes are reluctant to takea day off or go to a meeting evenifthey’re ill because itcoulddisruptthe whole school with teachers fromother classes having to pop inand supervise becausea teacher-on-call can’t be found.

That’s happening evenin the wake of COVID-19which

encouraged people not to work ifthey were sick Teachers are evenencouraged not to take off Mondays orFridays because those days are really hard to cover, Yao added.

While teachers used to be considered well paid,in Metro Vancouver ’s housing market, they’re facing the same problemas many others, struggling to find a place to rent, let alone buya house.

A rookie teacher makes $62,669thefirst year, whilethe top wage fora teacher without a master ’s degree is$97,000, Yao said.

Rentinga placefor$3,000 a month can seriously eat into the pay that new teachers take home ever y month.

She saidthat efforts are made to bring in teachers from out ofprovince but after a year many leave because they just can’tafford to live in B.C.

It’s got to the point that Delta SchoolDistrict nowhas online spacewhere teachers

can share intransportation andliving spaces

“Definitely, there’sa lotof different parts to this,” she said.

“I would say part ofthe shortage, the wages are not allowing people to live with dignity.”

Yao saidotherissuesare bothering teachers such as increased time they spendin front ofthecomputerupdating six different platforms as part oftheir regular duties.

Meanwhile, many classrooms have more thanthe original numberofthree kids withcomplexneeds.

“So there’sa lotofcomplex needs inthe classroomand yet notenoughadults to work with allthe studentsinthe class,” said Yao. “So that’s putting more pressure onthe teacher whenthey have to deal with allthose needs anddon’t have someoneelse to support students.”

That’s reflected inthe survey inwhich only 13 per cent of

teachers feltthat students with disabilitiesordiverse needs are having theirneeds met

But while Surrey struggles with skyrocketing enrolment, Delta schooldistrict is paradoxically projected to seea declineinenrolment in September, compared to the yearprevious, althoughthat could change, Yao said.

“If Surrey isgrowing by leaps and bounds, why is Deltanot growing?”sheasked.

Currently, the student populationcoulddecrease by 133 studentsnext September while the lack ofaffordablehousing and lack oftransitcould explainwhy fewer families are moving here. Yao noted that it’s been a coupledecades since a new school was builtin Delta

The B.C. Teacher ’s Federation saidin a release that 5,209 membersparticipated inthe survey which found that 58 per cent saidtheir workload has increased since last year

OCPamendmentapplicationin Boundary Bay draws mixed reactions

m

Delta Mayor George Harvie has already conveyed hisviewson a recently submitted redevelopment applicationin Tsawwassen, saying he doesn’tthinkhighly of such proposalsin singlefamily neighbourhoods.

The application for a property at 6525 Third Ave. is for an Official Community Plan(OCP) amendment to redevelop the site into a 12-unit residentialdevelopment.

It wouldcontain two, three-storey townhouse buildings, with four dwellings each and two, two-storey detached garage buildings with

two apartment dwellings above each.

An OCP amendment is required asit would not be consistent with the site’s current Single Family Residential(SFR) designation, northeproposed new OCP.

The planning department notesthe applicant has only applied for an OCPamendment at this time, with a rezoning application, development variance permit applicationanddevelopment permit application to be submitted should thecity’s new OCP be approved.

Councilon Monday (June3)granted preliminary approval to a set of zoning changes that will

pave the way for more small-scale, multi-unit formsofhousing on single-family andduplex lots, but thisproposalis notconsistent withthose changes.

Councilthis spring also approved major land use designation changes as part of a wider OCP

update, but the application wouldnot be consistent withthat either.

Staff are proposing to seek early public feedback ontheproposal whileprovidinga preliminar y reviewin relation to thenewproposed OCP.

During council’s discussiononthenew

application, Harvieasked planning staff how many housing unitscould be builtontheproperty if thecity’s new OCP zoning receives final approval.

Staff noted fourunits could be built, prompting Harvie to respond that whileproperty owners have the right to go throughan application process, it was the type of applicationhedoesn’t favour for single-family neighbourhoods. He saidthere could be evenmore coming forward withamendment applicationsthat don’t adhere to thenew OCP.

Coun. Dylan Kruger saidthenew OCP should be the standard, but now

was notthetime to discuss theprosandconsof the Third Avenue application.

He also said such an application would be giventhegreen light ifit was in NorthDelta Harviedisagreed, saying thecommunity of NorthDeltaisalso strongly opposed to overdensificationinestablished neighbourhoods. A public information meeting will be held on Wednesday, June19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the South Delta Secondar y cafeteria (75053 Street, Delta). A publichearing isalso required should the application eventually receive first and second readings by council.

Make Metro Vancouveranelected board, councillors ask B.C. premier

Fourcity councillors from across Metro Vancouver are calling on B.C. Premier David Eby to reviewthe regional body’s governance structure and replaceit withelected local representatives.

In a joint press release, New Westminster Coun. Daniel Fontaine, Maple Ridge Coun. Ahmed Yousef, Surrey Coun. Linda Anis, and Richmond Coun. Kash Heed, slammed Metro Vancouver ’s 50-year-old governancemodelas out of

date and incapableof reining incost overrunson major capitalprojects.

The regional bodycurrently appoints41 board members from23local governments.

“We need to take Metro out oftheshadowsand make it more transparent, starting with electing its board,” said Heed in a statement.

Yousef, who ser ves on Metro Vancouver ’s liquid waste committee, pointed to almost $3 billionincost overruns at the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant, andthenow $12billion slated to be spent

onthe Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Richmond.

“There’sa lack of accountability. I don’tanswer to my immediate constituents,” said Yousefinaninterview with Glacier Media. “Asa political animal, I’d like to seea lot more representation, efficiency.”

New Westminster’s Fontaine said Metro Vancouver ’s governancemodel makes it too easy for big infrastructure projects to become financialproblems “because nooneisheld accountable andtaxpayers are left sitting onthe sideline,

exceptwhenitcomes topaying for thecost overruns.”

“Not a single person has resigned or been fired,” Fontaine said about the North Vancouver overruns.

The joint statement fromthe fourcouncillors highlighted what they claimis“mission creep” with Metro Vancouver insertingitself into areas already governed by municipalitiesandtheprovince

BothAnnisand Yousef also noted recent revelations that Metro Vancouver board chairand Delta Mayor George Harvie had spent $17,336

intaxpayermoney to fly to Brisbane, Australia, in business class.

“While peopleare struggling withhighcostsofgroceries, fuels andinterest rates, they see that the peoplewhoare supposed to be representative ofthem flying business class, flying all overthe world…”

Yousef said. “If COVID has taught usnothing, it’s we don’t need to be inthat room.”

“It’s about efficiency.”

Premier Eby’s office and Metro Vancouverdidnot immediately respond to requests for comment.

OPIN ION

Fix thebroken Metro board

Editor’s Note

IAN JACQ UES

The governance structure at Metro Vancouverisbrokenandneeds to be fixed.

The board has beenunder intense scrutiny the past monthor so forthe ballooning costsofthe North Shore wastewater treatment plant– which isfacing a $3billioncost overrun at thepresent time as well, travelcostsofthe board andwhether infact, travel junkets to other countriesfor conferencesare stillneeded

Delta Mayor George Harvie, who will be out as board chair later thismonth, due to Deltacouncil removing himasthe city’s Metro representative, has beenunderfire for histravelexpenses

After being ambushed by media inthe back parking lotof municipal hallfollowing a recent councilmeeting, Harvie refused to answer questions.A day later, heissueda statement through Metro Vancouverthat he was pulling out ofthecontroversialtrip to Amsterdam for an environmentalconference.

You wouldthinkthat would have been the endofthis, but no Instead ofdoing the ‘right thing’ and cancelling thetrip outright, Mayors Mike Hurley of Burnaby,Brad West of Port Coquitlam, MalcolmBrodieof Richmondand John McEwenofAnmore, and three Metro staffers jetted off to theconferenceinwhat Meto saidin a statement was a“beneficiallearning opportunity”forthe entire region.

Metro Van is so tonedeaf about being fiscally responsible. Ifthis wasindeed a tripthat had to be taken, why did seven people have to go? Why not sendone andtheother six could attend via Zoom?

In response to allofthis, four municipal councillors across the Lower Mainland have called onPremier David Eby to initiate afull reviewof Metro Vancouverand,in theprocess, look at the possibility of residents having the power to electits board members Afull board reviewis clearly needed and Eby needs to make this happen.

The Metro Van board can notcontinue to operate withimpunity like this at the detriment to itstaxpayers.

Housingaction plandivides us

There are two camps inthe debate overfuture densification of our beautiful South Delta. Those who welcome mixed, multi-unit housing andthose who want to maintainthe statusquo.I am withthe latter group.

In my neighbourhood for sale signs are popping up weekly due to what I call, “The grey-haired exodus.”

No offence to grey haired people because asofthis year I amofficiallya senior with a few grey hairs.

Many seniors in South Deltaare downsizing from their single-family homes, moving to long-term care, or sadly dying.

Most oftheirhomes are being torndown and replaced with large singlefamily housesthat are priced forthe rich.

Whiledevelopers are free to build McMansionson expensive land, they are usu-

Community Comment INGRIDABBOTT

ally built by speculators looking to make profitsinsteadof considering theneeds ofthe community.

Big homesare thenotthe way ofthefuture, and South Deltaisnoexception.

City planners andarchitectsare capableofinnovative designsfor multi-use housing thatmaintainsprivacy and aesthetics.

Here’s a good exampleof creating newhousing in our community.

A recent applicationfor a zoning amendment to build12 residential townhomes beside Pebble Hill Elementar y in Tsawwassen is an awesomeidea.

Familiescouldafforda home with parks andan elementar y schoolnearby.

Why would we continue to rebuild single-family homes that are out of reach for most because someonedeser ves to have theirneighbourhood exemptfrom change.

We should be very worried that 42 per cent of young adultsare considering moving away from our province because they see noaffordablefuture here. That is a scar y statistic

We must increase densificationnow, there isno excuse not too. The next generation has to seea future in our community,or we will suffer greatly.

Deltamen face charges as police bust vehicletheftring

Air tags can track stolen vehicles

BRENDANKERGIN

Two Deltamenare facing several charges after police recovered 29 vehicles, including newer Range Rovers and Toyota Tundras, worth $2.5 million

An investigation by the Integrated MunicipalProvincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT) that began in February ended withthearrest ofthe pairin Surrey in late May,according to the BC RCMP.

During the investigation, police recovered the vehiclesfromshipping containers at B.C. ports. IMPACT was assisted by a variety of agenciesincluding Vancouver Police, Delta police and Canada Border Services

The RCMPnotesthe pair were “using sophisticated technology” to get into the newer vehicles.

Acting Officer in Charge ofIMPACT Eugene Lum statesthatjust because

a vehicleemploys high-tech security measures doesn’tnecessarily mean it’s theft-proof

“New vehicle owners sometimes assumethat built-in, anti-theft mechanisms andnew technology meantheir vehicle is less likely to be stolen,” says Lum. “The reality is criminals can use technology to find andexploit weaknesses of specific, newer vehiclesand steal them without a key fob.”

Mohamed WaelOzor, 29,andOmar Wael Ozor, 20, each face14 charges, including theftofmotor vehicles over $5,000, possessionof stolen property, andtrafficking in stolen property, according to the RCMP.

Policeadvise vehicle owners to use after-market anti-theftdevices to discourage thieves andnote Air Tagsor similarGPS tracking devices can be used to track down a vehicle ifit has been stolen.

City to expandpublicinput for its budgetingprocess

om

The City of Delta will expandopportunities forthe public to provide input onthenext municipal budgetprocess, as wellastheamount of time to solicitthat feedback.

Council last week approvedamotion by Coun. Dylan Kruger to havethe municipality implement expanded publicengagement initiatives beginning thisfall forthe2025 budgetprocess to ensure meaningfulinput from residents

The motionincludes

having Deltaexpand opportunities to solicit feedback from residents on budgetprioritiesand spending allocations, and that council willconsider thefeedback received fromthe publicduring the budgetprocess and “strive to incorporate community input into

budgetary decisions.”

City manager Donny van Dyk toldcouncilthat thefinanceandengagement departments have indicated many of the actions can be achieved within budget. The city has beenplanning new engagement principles sincethe last budgetpro-

cess, he said.

Krugernoted thecity “isthrifty”whenitcomes to spending itsdollars andthe various departmentsdo a tremendous job walking council throughthe budgeting process.

However, there isan appetite withthe public to hearmore about that work and have a more transparent process to ensure they are also walking throughtheprocess at the sametimeascouncil.

That process should also start earlierinorder to fully understandthe community’s priorities, added Kruger

Mayor George Harvie saidthecity’s expanded engagement department has beendoing exceptional work and willdo so forthenext budgeting process.

The timing ofwhen

theproposed property taxincrease was released andgivenpreliminary approval latelast year drewcriticismfrom many residents, although a civic report noted that 969 residents participated inanonline survey,a 28-per-cent increase from theprevious year.

For 2024,council approved a 7.75 per-cent municipalproperty tax increase which includes 5.75 per cent forcity operational services

There isalsoa two-percent recreation capital investment levy, which isanamount dedicated to improving thecity’s recreationand public facilities.

The increase fora typicalhomeassessed at $1.34millionin2023 would be $208,according to thefinancedepartment.

Province consideringfilling Massey Tunnelwithsand

MARIARANTANEN

Whenthe George Massey Tunnelisfinally replaced– estimated to be in2030 – theold tunnelmight just be leftin placeandfilled in.

According to the Ministr y of Transportationand Infrastructure, they are currently “exploring” an optionoffilling the current tunnel with sand insteadof removing it

“Filling the existing tunnel willaddress longterm seismicconcerns and related risks to marine navigationand nearby infrastructure,” the ministr y saidin a statement. “Leaving the existing tunnelinplace

will reduceimpacts to the river and marinetrafficthroughconstruction.”

In themeantime, BC Hydro is weighing its optionsonhow to replace itstransmissionlines that currently go throughthe existing tunnel.

The utility has proposed three options to replace thetransmissionlines: build overhead wires, build theminto the new tunnel or build a separate tunnel forthe hydro line.

BC Hydro has ruled outa separate tunnel and isexploring whether to build overheadlinesor integrate theminto the new tunnel.

The new tunnelis budgeted at $4.15billion and will be aneight-lane immersed tube tunnel.

City movingpop-upparkback toBridgeStreetlocation

The City of Deltais movinga Ladner Village pop-up back to what is expected to be a more ideallocation.

Council has endorsed a staff recommendation to set up a summer popup park at it’s original locationonBridge Street.

Staff had recommended it be moved to the the city-owned parking lot on Delta Street, but instead council agreed with a request by the Ladner Business (LBA) Associationfortheoriginal spotwhich had been a popular placefor residents to hangout.

The city had originally set up a pop-up park on Bridge Streetin2021,one of several launched as part of a new Street FUNiture Program featuring several pop-up parks in business districtsas

wellas outdoor reading rooms outsidecity libraries

The pop-up parks were equipped withurban play infrastructure and furnished with a variety of seating options.

The city will be expanding theprogram in2024includinga new disc golf pop-up park and a new publicpiano inDiefenbaker Park.

For thefirst two years, theBridge Street popup park proved popular, however, it was relocated last yearafter anadjacent business expressed opposition.

At the request ofthe LBA andin response to feedback received from thecommunity, staff proposed to re-establish a pop-up park inLadner Village this year.

The city also held consultations with businessesand residents immediately adjacent to

theoriginalBridge Street pop-up park location.

A staff report notes setting up a pop-up park at the parking lot, located at 4910and4914 Delta St., wouldhave minimized theimpact to adjacent businesses andlimit trafficimpactsinLadner Village, thoughit would have also resulted inthe

loss of14 parking spots.

Someoftheconcerns expressed fromthecommunity included noise at night and security.

It was suggested that theitems be locked away nightly, closing the park by 10 p.m., and having bylaw officers or police regularlypatrolthearea to prevent vandalismand theft.

It was also requested that theartificial turf not be re-installed aslocal dogsused itas a washroom.

In addition to Diefenbaker Park, the other pop-up parks will be located at Gunderson Park, Tsawwassen Town Centre, the Sungod

Recreation Centre, and the Elliott Street Wharf, whilethere will be outdoor reading rooms at the Tsawwassenand George Mackielibraries. Due to the timing of plannedupgradesforthe Chisholm Street Wharf, that space willnot be reactivated with a pop-up park this year.

City renovating municipalhall

sg yarm ati@delta-optimi st .c om

The City of Delta has issued a request for proposalsfortheconstructionof a newfront entrance vestibule serving at theentrancefor municipal hallinLadner.

The project, part of a seriesofplanned upgrades to thefacility totalling more than$2 million,is to be completed by theendof September 2024.

According to civic report,a numberofareas ofthefacility are inneed ofcritical maintenance andupdating to ensure continued provisionof services to thecommunity.

Overthecoming months, staff willprogress with work onthe council chambers, the

addition to thecity hall front entrance/vestibule, as well as the establishmentof aninformation kiosk andoffice renovations to enhance space efficiencies.

The report notes that the development of an entrance vestibule space shiftsthe public point of entr y closer to thefront courtyard area and creates an easily differentiated entranceway to the building.

The city retainedan architect to complete the detailed design, withthe goalof commencingconstructioninthis summer.

The estimated cost ofthat project aloneis $1.2million, however, a more precise cost will be known at the completion of detailed design, the report notes.

Last month, thecity issued a request for bidsfor a contractor to undertake other repairs, including removing and replacing expansion jointsaroundthe building thathave failed, waterproofing the surrounding concrete, as wellasminor related works such asconcrete repairandthe applicationof sealant to waterproof railing bases.

City of Delta,Metro wantgreenertransportation

sg yarm ati@delta-optimi st .c om

Invest Vancouver, Metro Vancouver’s regional economicdevelopment service, and the B.C. government are celebrating Clean Transportation Month this June, holding events and recognizing organizationsandindividuals at theforefront of clean transportation solutions. According to the regionaldistrict, transportationisthe single largest sourceofgreenhouse gas (GHG)emissionsinthe Metro Vancouver region, accounting formore than 40 per cent ofallemissions. Strategies at the regional, provincialand nationallevel, including CleanBC, Climate 2050, 2030 Emissions Reduction Planand Transport 2050,are working together to encourage innovation, generate clean jobs, reach net zero, as wellasachieve a stronger and resilient green economy, thisdistrict notes.

Transportationisalso a key component of the City of Delta’s new Community Energy and Emissions Plan(CEEP), recently endorsed by council, containinga

seriesofproposed actions to encourage shifting beyondthe car and encouraging active transportation.

Prominent is Delta’s Cycling Master Plan, creating additionalprotected lanes, andtheongoing Electric Vehicle Strategy, increasing the number ofelectric vehicle(EV ) chargers available to the public.

The report notes in Delta, asof2019, passenger vehiclescontributed the largest proportionof emissions at 37 per cent.

Commercial vehicles followed closely inemissions at 31 per cent, which the report notes is unusually highcompared to other Metro Vancouver communities, but can be explained by Deltaport beinga hub forcommercial goodsandhigher per cent ofheavy-duty vehicles registered in Delta.

The CEEP outlines several goals to including optimizing landuse planningforcompactcommunity growth, increasing walking, cycling andotherformsof zero emissionmobility,as well asincreasing transit ridershipand supportinga transition to a zero-emissiontransitnetwork

The goalsalso include electrifying passenger

transportation, enable charging on-the-go, enabling charging at homeand at work, encouraging EVs through outreach and supportive policies, decarbonizing commercialtransportationandaccelerating the adoptionof zero emission vehiclesandlow carbon fuelsforcommercial fleets.

However, when it comes to decarbonizing commercialtransportation, the report notes local government impact onthat sectoris currently limited due tolack of availability ofcommercial-sized EVs, and commercial fleets being owned andoperated

eitherprivately orfrom otherorders of government.

The city ownsand operatesmore than30 public Level2 charging stations at civicfacilities andplans to have around 20more installed this year, along withone DC fast charge station at the North Delta Recreation

Centre. It’s all part ofthe Electric Vehicle Strategy

The Metro Vancouver Board earlierthis year endorsed the regional district submitting several climate action resolutions to the Unionof BC Municipalitiesincluding calling ontheprovince for evenmore funding for EV charger deployment.

A StoryWalk in Tsawwassen will be onthemove to a newlocation. Council last week approved a staff recommendation to relocate the StoryWalk at Beach Grove Park to Diefenbaker Park.

A StoryWalk is a deconstructed children’s book, where laminated pages of the bookare placed ondisplay stands spreadalonga pathortrail, to encourage young readers to enjoy the stor y while completinga walkthroughthe park.

In 2021, thecity entereda memorandumofunderstanding withthe Rotar y Clubof Tsawwassen to create one at Beach Grove Park.

A staff report notesit was chosenas a suitable locationdue to its popularity

as a walking space, andadjacency to Beach Grove Elementar y School. At the time, the park served asanunenclosed off-leashdog area, andincludeda number of walking trailsthrough a forested landscape

The city later received complaints from the Beach Grove Elementar y Parent Advisor y Council about off-leash dogsanddog waste on studentsarriving at schoolandutilizing the school’s playing field.

The city proceeded to add fencing to enclose the park infall2022, but itled to a declineinthose accessing the park to engage withthe StoryWalk. installation.

The clubthen approached thecity requestinga relocation to another park.

The $5,000cost to re-installthefeature will be shared between the service clubandcity.

Lifestyles Enjoya Long Weekendwith the Sidekick Players

Sidekick Players presents The Long Weekend by Norm Fosteropening Friday, June14and running to June29 closing their 27th season.

Co-directed by Laura Sutherland-Smithand Carroll Lefebvre, The Long Weekend is a hilarious look atmarriage and relationships and how the seeming normal or mundane can really be extremely dysfunctional – andvice versa. The resultis a delightful twoact comedy about four characters who really don’t like each other and two of the worst long weekends ever

When Max (Jeff Pannell)and Wynn (Cathy Collis)invite their friends Roger (Doug Perri) and Abby (Erica Bearss)up for a weekend at theircountry home, the true nature oftheir relationships unfolds What followsis a hysterical battleofinnuendosand attitudes where secretsare revealed, poor decisions are made, and it becomes clear that the grass isn’talways greener on theother sideof the fence

Yes, The Long Weekend isa very funny play. You might ask howa show about fourflawed char-

acterswho don’t even want to be in the same room together can be so entertaining. One reason is because the personality flaws of the characters give them dimensionand keep the conflictinteresting andfresh You’re just never sure just how the characters are going to react to one another. There’s alsoa seriesof twistsfromthe first to the secondactthatmakes you wonder how it’s all going to come out in the end. But whatmakes this play so much fun to watch is the strengthof thefour actors who so clearly enjoy working

together

Truth be told, itcould be a lot raunchier, but Fosteris a master at generating laughs without crossing the line It’s all lighthearted comedy that combines to make this another in the long list of classics from Foster

The Long Weekend opens June14and runs to June29 with shows Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Reserve seats by calling 604-288-2415.All performancesare held at The TsawwassenArts Centre, 117256th Street -Submitted

ButI chose you

In John15:15, Jesus toldhisdisciples that they were nolonger servants, but friends because he chose them

Someofthe best and someofthe worst momentsof my life have to do with being chosen.

I remember vividly being left out of sporting teams becauseI wasn’t a good player.I was always the last to be chosen – if I was chosen at all –I would sit onthe bench as a substitute and I was rarely allowed to play. It was an ego-bruising thing to not be chosen, to be left out, to be considered theleast valuable person, but what a different feeling to be among the chosen whenone day the soccercoach chose me to

play onhis team– not becauseI was good –mainly because he was goodbecause heknew that itmeant a lot to me to be chosen...to be a player. What a wonderful exper ienceitis to be chosen! To know that we

are important to someone, that we are valued, that we are desirable. Being chosenisimportant stuff Jesus the Christ, the Chosen One of God, has chosenus – and chosenusnot simply to be servants, but to be hisfriends.

That isincredible to us We, you andI,are of value, of worth, to Jesus – to the son oftheliving God. Hearthis day and ever y day, my friends, that we are chosen! Chosen by the Christ, the Chosen One himself! He wants usonhis team – notforwhat we can or cannotdo, notfor our abilitiesor lack thereof, but because heloves us and wants to show his love to usand – through us – to others
