Delta South candidates square off at election forum
PHIL MELNYCHUK pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com
Delta South’s pair of prospective provincial politicians faced a non-election type question at the riding’s only all-candidates meeting, Oct. 9.
Peatlands are referred to as the forgotten solution to climate change, so how will your government protect them, came the question at the end of the meeting.
Both however, backed Delta’s own version, Burns Bog.
Ian Paton, running for the B.C. Conservatives, noted that “we’ve managed to protect it as best we can. And I can guarantee you, that in the future, we won’t see anymore encroachment into Burns Bog,” he said.
“I believe you really can’t build in that area … I believe it’s going to be protected and can’t be used anyway,” said Jason McCormick, with the NDP.
Topics though were tougher
for most of the evening as Delta Chamber of Commerce board chair Rosanne Horner relayed questions from the business community and the audience at Genesis Theatre in Ladner.
One questioner wanted to know how each party was going to pay for its promises,
McCormick said the NDP is doing a “great job” creating and attracting new business, more than any other province.
“By keeping our debt-toGDP ratio quite low and our triple A credit rating intact, we’ll be able to afford to finance all this new infrastructure that we need to build,
ways, we need to build schools and, unfortunately, we’re going to have to spend, until our economy comes back on line, and pays for it, all through all those new jobs that will be created.”
Paton pointed out that since 2017, the NDP have introduced 32 new taxes and that the provincial deficit will be $11 billion by next March. B.C. has
so many resources from which to raise revenue rather than taxing the citizens to pay for things, he added.
Another question asked how candidates would reduce permitting delays for major projects.
Paton said he often hears how difficult it is for farmers just to work their farms, instead of dealing with permits, applications, fees and inspections.
He added that there are 17 mines in B.C. waiting to open.
“The carbon tax is an absolute killer for our businesses in B.C. and (leader) John Rustad has vowed to get rid of the carbon tax so that businesses can take that off their overhead, ” he said.
“I love how my counterpart talks about stuff that’s not really in the question,” McCormick said, noting that the government will try to remove duplication in permitting, such as creating a universal building permit.

Both were asked how to improve health care with McCormick saying the NDP government is hiring another 800 doctors. He added that as the government is adding more medical student spaces in schools, hiring more nurse practitioners and allowing pharmacists to prescribe (some) medicines, waits are being reduced.
The BC Conservatives are proposing delivering universal care through public and nongovernmental facilities and implementing a patient-based funding model giving patients the choice to access care sooner, saying such systems work in Australia and the U.K., Paton added.
A controversial question kicked off the evening, asking about landlords and tenants. With the government limiting what landlords can recover from tenants, “what is your party’s plan for managing the rental-housing sector and for balancing residential tenancy concerns?” candidates were asked.
Paton said his party agreed that rental increases should be capped at three percent per year and also mentioned the “Rustad rebate,” that will
exempt up to $3,000 in monthly mortgage or rental costs from provincial taxes by 2029.
”As many people know, the rental rates are through the roof,” said McCormick. He said the NDP will work to reduce red tape and implement in the future an online dispute resolution system for renters and landlords, he said.
A follow-up question asked how each party would reduce the “multitude of taxes” that are increasing the cost of housing.
But McCormick said that most of the housing costs are to do with supply and demand.
“As our population has increased, the demand for our housing has increased which has driven prices of housing up, not necessarily the taxes …” Property transfer taxes are high because of the increase in value of properties, he added.
Paton noted he voted against Bill 44 which in 2023 required cities to allow more density, such as three or fourplexes in single family home areas, without considering infrastructure needs.
“The NDP government has taken over running municipalities,” Paton said.
In order to build cheaper homes, it has to be cheaper for
developers to do that, he said, citing rising development cost charges.
Someone wanted to know that if elected, if the new MLA’s party would support the provincial housing target of 3,607 new homes in Delta by 2028 and if they supported increasing help to pay for needed infrastructure.
Paton replied that the new housing that’s being built on Tsawwassen First Nation lands should be included in that number.
McCormick though said that there won’t be four-plexes or six-plexes on every single family lot.
TransLink and how to pay for it popped up as well, with TransLink’s report in July detailing possible cuts to bus service in Delta resulting from a funding shortfall.
“The NDP will help TransLink, they have said that,” said McCormick. “They will increase the funding so that $600-million shortfall doesn’t happen and they’’ll
work with the federal government to get those funds as well,” he said.
There will be no reduction, and I repeat, no reduction in bus service,” said Paton.
The B.C. Conservatives are committed to fully funding TransLink for two years, “and auditing and reforming its financial model to ensure long-term stability,” he said.
In a related topic, a questioner asked what steps the new government would take to speed up the construction of the new Fraser River tunnel, expected to be built by 2030.
McCormick proposed getting the tunnel built as soon as possible but also building a new bridge to create a new road into Vancouver.
Paton pointed out that seven and a half years have passed, “and there hasn’t been a sod turned … with some kind of replacement for the George Massey Tunnel.”
“In 2017, $100 million was spent by the B.C. Liberal government (renamed to BC United in 2023) to prepare for building the bridge.
“In 2017, the NDP killed the bridge project which would have been open two years ago,” Paton said. The new bridge also would have had space for a rapid transit line, he added.

A Coast to Coast fitness trail is coming to Tsawwassen.
City council this week expressed enthusiastic support for the proposed project by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, which had two representatives outline the plan, seeking endorsement and support to work further with the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department.
Project leader Benno Bucher and Tom Smith, community projects chair and City of Delta liaison, explained how the Coast to Coast fitness trail would consist of a mixed-use greenway, connecting Centennial Beach to Fred Gingell Park. It would use existing mixed-use pathways that would have upgrades, with signage and equipment allowing for fitness breaks along the trail.
Bucher said signage would cost around $10,000 and trail enhancements around $50,000, but the exact amount still has to be determined. Four work-
“As you know, the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen has worked alongside the City of Delta on many occasions to improve our community and we see this project as a wonderful opportunity to partner once again to highlight our unique community, where it’s possible to have a pleasant trail from a sunrise beach to a sunset shore,” said Bucher.
Council was informed the Rotary club has indicated they have existing funds available to support the project and would continue to fundraise to support a gradual implementation of each fitness area. Subject to negotiation, Rotary is requesting the city provide matching funds to support implementation, and for the city to accept responsibility for maintenance and operation.
Council directed staff to work with the Rotary club to develop a comprehensive project plan including a detailed trail alignment, proposed fitness equipment specifications, project budget and phasing plan, and to report back to council for consideration.
City of Delta re imagining Ladner waterfront wharf
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The City of Delta will begin community consultation on a re-imagined Chisholm Street Wharf design.
Council this week endorsed sending a proposed concept for public feedback, a design that includes a glow-in-thedark accessible pathway and lights on cables over the wharf and dike pathway to transform an otherwise dark public space into a welcoming space in the evening.
The conceptual design also has space for a semi-permanent food container and food trucks, as well as utility services and picnic tables.
A report to council says the preliminary community feedback this summer on ideas to revitalize Ladner Village and the waterfront was positive when it comes to upgrading the wharf.
Survey participants expressed excitement about the space along Chisholm Street, which has undergone repairs, supporting year-round use by hosting
community events, live music and festivals, as well as improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
If supported, detailed designs will be completed and tendered to complete the project by spring 2026.
The report also notes that $2.5 million had been set aside to support the Ladner Waterfront Revitalization project, including wharf surface improvements and upgrades to Spot-on-theWater Park.
The 2024 funding included $412,000 from an estate bequest to support accessibility upgrades on the wharf.
However, elements of the project have been added, such as lighting, furniture, shade, mist and utilities, to support food service, that were not included in previous budgets. As a result, the project would be re-budgeted into the 2025 Capital Plan using carryover funds, plus an additional $2 million that has been identified through a revision to a development cost charge bylaw which supports parkland enhancements and trail expansion in the Ladner area.

City extending mobile food vendor program into 2025
SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta council this week approved a recommendation to extend the city’s Mobile Food and Beverage Vendor Pilot Program as well as to streamline the permitting process.
The pilot program will be extended to Oct. 14, 2025.
Council earlier this year agreed to launch the pilot, allowing food trucks at a variety of designated locations throughout the city until Oct. 14, 2024.
It was intended that after the completion of the pilot, staff would undertake engagement with the vendors, business community and the

Given the slow uptake in the program over the summer, staff recommended the pilot be extended, which would include another spring and summer season which are the busiest seasons for mobile vendors. Staff will proceed with the originally planned public consultations in the fall of 2025 and report back to council with long-term recommendations.
During council’s discussion, Mayor George Harvie said he hopes Delta will catch up to other communities and make the food truck program permanent.
Throughout most of the summer, however, only one application was received with a permit issued. As of late September, three more applications have been processed with permits issued, with a fourth permit expected to be issued in the coming days.
Delta School District releases new enrolment numbers
SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The overall student population in the Delta School District is up just slightly for the 2024/25 school year.
According to enrolment figures from the district, as of October 2024, the total number of students in elementary schools is 8,750, down 28 students from 2023/24.
The number of elementary students in Tsawwassen is up 51 compared to last year, while Ladner is down by six and North Delta is down by 73 students.
Meanwhile, the total number of students in secondary schools stands at 7,162, up by 41 students.
Tsawwassen had a drop of 61 students, while Ladner is up by 48 and North Delta is up by 54 high school pupils.
Overall, the district stands at 15,732, compared to 15,719 the previous year.
Last year at this time, the number of elementary school students in the district was up by nine from the 2022/23 school year, while the total secondary
school population was up 142 students.
During the start of its budget consultations this spring, the district said it anticipated a decrease in enrolment of 89 fulltime enroled students for 2024/25.
A report earlier this year on the 2025/26 capital plan said the latest enrolment projections for Delta indicate that enrolment will continue its slow recovery from many years of decline and that there is system-wide classroom capacity to accommodate the expected number of students for the foreseeable future.
However, the district is seeing a rapid increase in school-aged children in certain areas.
The district, in its submission to the province for capital funding, noted a projected increase of elementary school-aged children within the Ladner Elementary catchment area in the next three-to-seven years.
The Ministry of Education last month amended its response to the school board’s 2024/2025 capital plan submission to include a $9-million expansion for Ladner Elementary.

OPINION
In a world of misinformation, newspapers maintain vital connections
PAUL DEEGAN Contributing Writer
According to the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism’s Digital News Report 2024, Canadians’ trust in news is at 39 per cent. For comparison, Americans’ trust in news is even lower, at 32 per cent.
There are many variables at play in the decline of trust, including engagement-driven algorithms that deprioritize hard news – which traditionally provided a common set of facts – in favour of reinforcing one’s point of view rather than informing the reader.
The rise of “fake news,” misinformation, and disinformation are among other factors in the decline of trust. Across Canada, newspapers – whether print or digital – continue to cover school boards, cops, courts, city hall, and other issues that matter to the daily lives of Canadians. That’s why Canadians’ trust in their regional or local newspaper stands at a relatively healthy 65 per cent.
But real journalism by real journalists – not some artificial intelligence tool that scrapes the web for content, which is not always reliable – costs real money. Real local journalism involves the hard work of gathering facts, shows evidence of first-hand reporting – such as independent research, interviews, and fieldwork – and editing.
The light rewriting, reproduction, or aggregation of news from external sources is not original journalism, nor is simply cutting and pasting news releases or loading up a website with copy from a wire service or with a carousel of clickbait.
While there is no one silver bullet to solve the economic crisis in journalism, there are solutions that can help. First, businesses can support their local newspaper through advertising.
Governments – federal, provincial and local – can follow the lead of the Ford government in Ontario and earmark 25 per cent of advertising spend to domestic news publishers. For context, the feds spent more on China’s TikTok last year, than all Canadian print publications combined.
The private sector shouldn’t be competing with the public broadcaster, which takes in $73,139,000 in digital advertising revenue, while receiving $1,271,800,000 in direct annual government subsidies.
The government can provide the Competition Bureau with the tools and resources it needs to complete its investigation into online advertising practices in Canada. Paul Deegan is president and CEO of News Media Canada.
Who will you be voting for?
With election results just a couple of days away, it appears that the race is still exceedingly close.
Whatever the result, I think we can all agree that the meteoric rise of the B.C. Conservative party and its recent swallowing of much of the former BC Liberal Party, (renamed BC United), has given the current NDP government a sense of urgency to justify itself to the public.
The provincial Conservative party surge can be attributed to the waning support of the federal Liberal party and their governing agreement with the NDP.
Federal Conservatives are way ahead in the polls and are poised to assume government - perhaps prior to the scheduled election date.
The fledgling Conservative Party of B.C. is in the midst of sorting itself out and has done

well to check its overly right-wing candidates and some of their policies.
As in the past, the right wing likely will consolidate the free enterprise vote and weed out some of its problematic political strategies and platforms.
This will take place in the coming months, whether the party is governing or in opposition.
I think we may be looking at the early stages of a 1950s-style party, reminiscent of W.A.C. Bennett’s Social Credit.
Locally, the Conservatives did not
put a candidate up to challenge incumbent Ian Paton, prior to the demise of BC United, because they knew they would have a tough time beating him at the polls.
Paton has always said he would go down with the Liberal ship, but he didn’t even get that chance when BC United completely abandoned him and other representatives.
Paton is likely hopeful that the Conservative tent will expand to eventually wrap around the centre of the voting public. In terms of representing his constituency, Paton has been effective in opposition, particularly as it has related to the farming community, both locally and across B.C. In the case of South Delta, we have before us the very real chance that our MLA may be in the decision-making cabinet of the governing party, and that is something that South Deltans should look forward to.

There is a better way
Editor:
According to the city’s website, Delta’s tree bylaw notes that when removing a tree, “the number of replacement trees required has increased to help offset the loss of ecosystem services provided.”
It is, therefore, even more ironic that the city is now proposing, without any noted plan to replace, to remove many of the large trees along 56th Street, adjacent to a neighbourhood called Forest by the Bay.
While the idea of constructing a multi-use-
pathway is commendable, the reality is that cyclists will and should largely continue to use the roadway.
As I noted to the city during the online feedback, a cyclist travelling between 20 and 30 kmh will face more hazards on a pathway with joggers and pedestrians, people walking in groups and side-by-side, dog walkers, and people using mobility devices.
As a cyclist myself, I know that it is safer to use the roadway. To this end, we have an opportunity to reconfig-
ure the proposed section of 56th Street between Sixth and 8a avenues. The west side of 56th Street is not wide enough for two lanes of traffic but is wide enough for the existing one lane, plus a new, dedicated southbound bike lane.
On the east side, the existing sidewalk could be reconfigured into a northbound bike lane and the existing pathway through the trees could be reconstructed with minimal impact to the trees and could retain, as Peter Pichler noted in his letter, “a charm of its own”.

Trail changes are unsafe
Editor:
How was it ever a good idea to remove the structures (bridges) and trails between the Delta Nature Reserve (operated by Metro Vancouver) and the North Delta Greenway (operated by the City of Delta) before upgrading the designated trail into the Delta Nature Reserve?
The reasons noted were unsafe structures and illegal crossings over the railway tracks. Sensible solutions could have been achieved for
both concerns, without having to literally isolate the two parks from each other.
Park users are now faced with the extreme, poor trail conditions at the Delta Nature Reserve (Burns Bog). Although this overall condition with the creek spilling over onto the walkway has existed for some time, it is no longer acceptable. The constant flooding is making parts of the trail that leads into the park inaccessible.
Prior to the September 2024 closures of the illegal access points, users of the Metro Vancouver park had options to avoid the flooded areas. This is no longer possible.
The only way in and out of this park is by using the designated trail.
Marking flooded areas, eroded areas, fallen trees (across the pathway) with cones is simply not acceptable. It makes this park nearly inaccessible for many users.

Legion Poppy Campaign needs your help
Editor:
This year’s Poppy Campaign begins on Oct. 25 and concludes on Nov. 11.
The Tsawwassen Branch 289 of the Legion has conducted the annual Poppy Campaign in our area since 1994, and the local population and businesses have been consistently generous with donations to our Poppy Fund.
The fund is used to assist veterans or their dependents in need, programs to assist veterans, bursaries for veterans’ family members who need financial assistance for further education, also
for prizes for our annual poster, literary and video school contests.
We have also donated money for equipment to local care homes, which have veterans as residents, and to our local hospital foundation.
We have donated more than $26,000 in the recent past to many of these causes, as well as contributing to the cadets of our local 828 Hurricane Squadron.
Donate and wear your poppy with pride as the symbol of remembrance.

City to have new cemetery plan
SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Planning is well underway to update to the City of Delta’s cemeteries and cemetery services.
In an updated report to council presented at the Oct. 7 meeting, staff note that a workshop will be scheduled early in the new year to review a draft Cemetery Master Plan and that the outcome of the workshop will help shape the recommendations in a final report and future bylaw amendments.
The final phase of the project will also include updated feedback from staff and community consultation.
The city currently provides cemetery services at the North Delta Cemetery, located at 8737 Brooke Rd., and the
Boundary Bay Cemetery, at 856 56th St., in Tsawwassen.
Cemetery services and fees are established in the cemetery bylaw.
A decade ago, the city hired a consultant to develop site-specific master plans for each cemetery that included expanded above-ground service options, additional in-ground burial and cremation options, and site improvements including landscaping, pathways and benches.
Endorsed by council in 2015, with a cost of $1 million, those plans were carried out in several phases.
“In addition, there are requests for alternate service offerings, such as green and natural burial services that aren’t currently available,” the report notes.
“There is limited space at BBC to provide additional in-ground interment offerings.
“Recently, three niche walls containing 40 units each have been added to the above ground inventory; however, those too are filling up and it is anticipated that capacity will be reached within the next two to three years. NDC (North Delta Cemetery) is not experiencing the same demand for space.”
“Over the past several years, demand for in-ground and aboveground interments has continued at a steady pace and once again, we are facing capacity issues within the next five to 10 years specifically at BBC (Boundary Bay Cemetery).
Cities of Delta and Surrey cracking down on fireworks
SANDOR GYARMATI sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
It remains to be seen if it sounds less like a war zone on both sides of the Delta-Surrey border following Surrey council this week agreeing to increase fines related to the sale and use of fireworks ahead of Halloween and Diwali celebrations.
In Surrey, the discharge of fireworks requires federal certification and permits from the Surrey Fire Service.
Under the current Surrey regulations, fines for fireworks violations have been relatively low, with maximums reaching $500, the city notes.
Surrey is proposing substantial amendments to the Fireworks Bylaw, Bylaw Enforcement Notice (BEN) Bylaw, and Municipal Ticket Information (MTI) Bylaw.
Those changes include increasing the minimum penalty for fireworks violations from $100 to $400, and the maximum penalty from $5,000 to $50,000, raising the maximum MTI fine for violations of the Fireworks Bylaw to $1,000, which is to facilitate more rigorous enforcement, as well as increased penalties under the BEN Bylaw to ensure better compliance and community safety.
Meanwhile, Delta council recently
gave final approval for bylaw amendments aimed at having tougher new penalties on using fireworks without permission.
A staff report notes that almost all firework usage in Delta is illegal, as the city only issued five fireworks permits in 2023, but last year issued 24 bylaw offence notices for bylaw contraventions.
The bylaw updates include prohibiting the discharge within 500 metres of livestock properties, while the fines for all illegal firework activity will be increased to $500.
Delta staff are also preparing a memo for council outlining the enforcement plan for Halloween/Diwali and other significant firework days and events.
A City of Delta motion on fireworks was endorsed at last month’s Union of BC Municipalities convention, requesting the province work with local governments to amend the BC Fireworks Act and also work with the federal government to address the online sale of fireworks.
Delta staff found significant differences in how local governments in B.C. are regulating the sale and use of fireworks within their communities. Where no local bylaw exists, the provincial Fireworks Act applies., resulting in discrepancies.

Delta police recognize acts of service, bravery and community impact
The Delta Police Department held its annual awards ceremony on Oct. 3, honouring the outstanding contributions of officers, police staff, volunteers, and community members who have gone above and beyond in their service to community safety and well-being.
“The awards ceremony was a celebration of excellence — the kind of excellence that defines the DPD,” said Acting Chief Const. Guy Leeson.
“Whether in moments of crisis or through their ongoing dedication, the actions and contributions of all award recipients represented the very best of policing and community safety. And while we honoured heroic and exceptional actions during the ceremony, it’s also important to recognize the work our team does every day — on every shift and every call — is just as important for our community’s safety and wellbeing.”
Four community members were recognized with the Outstanding Citizen Award for their heroic acts, including lifesaving interventions and extraordinary bravery.
The ceremony’s highest honour, the Chief Constable Commendation, was awarded to Const. Brandon Orser for his extraordinary efforts in supporting an individual in a mental-health crisis on the Alex Fraser Bridge for over eight hours and saving their life.
The award recipients were Aaron Ekyhout, Joga Johal, Gaganpreet Heer and Mandeep Heer.
Pat Wong was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award.

Mistress of Darkness Robyn Hasbach invites the community to her home at 5674 Grove Avenue on Halloween Night for the 22nd edition of Halloween Horror Delta.
Halloween Horror Delta returns in spooktacular fashion
PHIL MELNYCHUK
pmelnychuk@delta-optimist.com
Halloween falls on an awkward, midweek day this year, Thursday, instead of the weekend, but that there will be hoopla and shenanigans, nevertheless.
For example, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, Fright Fest returns to the Ladner Community Centre, from 4 to 8 p.m.
There will be a haunted house, trick or treating around McKee Seniors Centre, rascals will be roaming around and there will be a haunted house bouncy castle.
Kids’ games and activities will take place at the Boys and Girls Club from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Some of the fun activities include a photo booth, face painting, balloon artist, Halloween crafts, story time, and flash-mob style dance performances.
And if you’ve skipped supper, Mr. Mom’s Café
will be cooking up a storm, and there will be Little Ooties Donuts and Grilled Cheese and marshmallow roasting.
One tip however, while the Fright Fest is fully accessible, (except for the Haunted House,) and service dogs are welcome, people are asked to leave their other pets at home.
And keep in mind that the Haunted House doesn’t have room for strollers, so mom’s and dads are asked to leave those at home.
Dimmed and coloured lights and strobe lights will be used.
In addition to the Tuesday, the Haunted House will be available at McKee Music School the day before, on Monday, Oct. 28, as well as the day after, on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
In North Delta, Fright Fest will take place a full week before, on Oct. 22, at North Delta Recreation Centre, for the same hours, from 4 to 8 p.m.
And what Halloween would be complete without the two-decade tradition known as Halloween Horror Delta.
That’s when Ladner’s Mistress of Darkness, Robyn Hasbach, opens her house at 5674 Grove Ave. on Halloween night, from 6 to 9 p.m.
This marks the 22nd year for Halloween Horror Delta and will feature an animated gravestone projection, a dungeon, fog machines, two haunted graveyards, static and animated creatures, two mausoleums and a new façade at the front door.
The event also partners with the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society and will also be livestreamed via YouTube.
“We anticipate welcoming up to 1,000 brave visitors on Halloween night, ready to experience a night of Halloween fun and enchantment,” Hasbach said.

“BeFaithful,betrue, beablessing”
I recently led a Wild Church gathering at Porpoise Bay Provincial Park situated on the swiya, unceded traditional territory of the shíshálh Nation.
We gathered near an estuary where the Angus creek runs into the bay. Soon, coho salmon would make their way up the creek to spawn and die.
As an indicator species, salmon health is directly related to the health ecosystems. Bears, eagles, and other animals depend on salmon for food and carry their remains into forests nourishing a plethora of flora and fauna.
Biophilosopher Andreas Weber describes the self-giving impulse woven throughout the planet’s web of relations
as a loving erotic ecology.
Jesus uses the image of an edible life, to describe how God shares God’s life for the nourishing of others.
Inspired by Weber’s work, author Sophie Strand asks, “How do we become good food?” How might we participate in an erotic ecology, giving of our lives so others might be nourished? This divine love is not about debasing ourselves. Rather, it’s about realizing that our wellbeing is tied up in the flourishing of others. May our lives, like the salmon returning to the Fraser, and Jesus, whose life was spent feeding the hungry, become good food.
Christian theologians have long referred to God’s self-giving nature as kenotic love. This love is enfleshed in the generous and gracious life of Jesus who gave of his life so others might flourish. This divine love lies behind Jesus’ startling words, “eat my flesh and drink my blood.”

Ice Hawks rule the perch at the quarter-mark of the season
IAN JACQUES ijacques@delta-optimist.com
The Delta Ice Hawks are in top spot in the Tom Shaw Conference standings as the team hits the quarter mark of its 2024/25 Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) season.
Last Tuesday (Oct. 8), the Ice Hawks hit the double-digit win mark, improving to a 10-4 record, with a 8-2 win over the expansion Coastal Tsunami.
The Hawks outshot the visitors from the Sunshine Coast, 60-18.
The game marked number 100 for captain Tye Hemenway’s PJHL career, and his team did him proud to make it a special win for him.
The Hawks got going early, scoring on their first two shots of the game.
Ryden Mathieson streaked in down the right wing from the blue line and fired a beautiful shot over goalie Finn Morrison’s blocker-side shoulder.
Then about 30 seconds later, Lucas Jakubec picked up a rebound out front from a Brandon Petrie shot and was able to send it to the back of the net for a quick 2-0 lead.
Coastal cut the lead in half before the midway point of the period, with Ethan Smid finishing off a bit of a scramble in front of Delta’s net to make it 2-1, after one.
In the second, Mathieson again struck within the first minute, redirecting a point
shot from Hemenway, past Morrison, to reclaim the Hawks’ two-goal lead. It was Mathieson’s eighth of the season.
Mathieson was involved in Delta’s fourth goal of the game as well, as he went in looking for the hat trick and was denied, but league-leading goal scorer Mateo Sjoberg was there to clean up the rebound to make it 4-1 through 40 minutes.
Delta added another one in the third period, while shorthanded. Beckett Cross took the puck from centre and, while fighting off some tight defence, was able to get a shot up and over the left shoulder
of Morrison for the goal of the night, his sixth of the season.
Not long after that, Miller Bruckshaw sent Teegan Sara and Chayse Hainz on a 2-on-1, and Hainz finished off the play by putting in the rebound for his second goal of the year and a 6-1 Hawks lead.
Tsunami’s Ben Walker scored a power play goal for Coastal, his second goal in two games, against his former team to make it 6-2, but the Hawks fired right back.
Defenceman Miller Bruckshaw scored his first goal in the PJHL, while on the power play, thanks to a pass from Declan Warburton and
a helpful bounce off a skate in front to make it a 7-2 game.
Brogan Kennedy rounded out the scoring with a fortunate bounce of his own, flipping it up on to the shoulder of Morrison and then rolled over the goal line.
After 14 games, Sjoberg leads the Hawks and the league in scoring with 16 goals and 13 assists.
Zach Shaughnessey has had the lion’s share of starts in goal, sporting a 7-4 record with a 3.26 GAA. Merik Erickson is 2-0 between the pipes, while rookie Imaree Dhaliwal picked up one win in his only start so far.
Head coach and general
manager Steve Robinson said he is pleased with the start, but knows it is a long season with much more work ahead.
“We’re building and starting to get a feel of the roster, the new guys and the returning guys and where they all fit,” said Robinson. “We are waiting for a couple of guys to come back from injury and that will solidify our depth and help us figure out what our combinations will be, but overall, I’m satisfied that we are growing and building the right way.”
Robinson said he is seeing more buy-in from the team to move the puck better and quicker in certain areas, which is a key to team success moving forward.
“Finding more speed in our game and avoiding dumb penalties that keeps the game 5-5, or at least us having an advantage, is key,” he said.
“Just recognition of having long stretches of domination and then we have a brain cramp, and we give up an odd-man rush, or a breakaway unnecessarily, are things we need to work on. And I’d like to see the power play get connected and executed better. We need to move the puck quickly, get to the net and crash – I think the power play will click too.”
Delta had a game Friday night (Oct. 11) in Surrey and played host to Surrey on Oct. 15.
The Ice Hawks’ next home game is Oct. 22, when they host Richmond, at 7:35 p.m.
