Premier Christy Clark made a quick campaign stop in Delta Monday morning, bringing her message about the importance of a strong economy to Ocean Trailer on River Road. With the South Fraser Perimeter Road construction and Burns Bog in the background, Clark met with local business people and employees, and talked about how a strong economy enables infrastructure investments that grow the economy.

“Only a strong economy and strong leadership can deliver the roads, bridges and transit system that are so vital to supporting families and connecting our communities,” Clark said as Delta Liberal candidates Bruce McDonald and Scott Hamilton looked on. “Where the NDP built debt and left failed projects, today’s B.C. Liberals invested to grow the economy and it is working.” Clark hailed Ocean Trailer’s new eco-industrial facility as a “true success story.” It’s situated on the notorious Delta Shake &

Shingle property, a site that sat vacant for many years following a major fire in 1999. The fire burned for 10 weeks, prompted Delta to declare a state of emergency and left a contaminated mess behind. The facility is the result of the Delta Landfill Renewal Project, a cooperative effort among the province, Delta and private landowners that saw the clean up of several contaminated former construction landfill sites along River Road. Through the program, Ocean Trailer, a Coquitlam-based trailer

and container business that had an adjacent facility on River Road, assumed responsibility for the closure and clean up the property. The company was given a break on development cost charges and property tax incentives. The multi-million-dollar facility recently opened, bringing with it more than 150 jobs. Clark used the stop to highlight some of the infrastructure projects the Liberals have supported in recent years — SFPR, the new Port Mann Bridge and a replacement for the George Massey Tunnel.

Delta’s new animal shelter opened for business this week. After more than a year in the works, the 12,000-square-foot facility opened Monday. “I’m very happy that we have moved the animals from our old location into a new building that will allow for better care of the animals and suitable space for our staff and our many dedicated volunteers,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. The road to the new Delta Community Animal Shelter began with the purchase of land at the southwest corner of Tilbury and Hopcott roads from Fortis BC at the end of 2011. The new facility, which replaces the aging shelter on 80th Street, includes 18 dog pens, undercover outdoor areas and two covered outdoor dog runs, five separate cat rooms and additional space for small animals, as well as dedicated space for staff and volunteers. The shelter long outgrew its original building. Built in 1972, the former shelter, which is now closed, was originally designed to only accommodate dogs. Cats now make up more than 50 per cent of the animal population at the shelter. While the new shelter officially opened Monday, a grand opening celebration is planned for June 15. The total budget for the new shelter was $4.26 million, and it’s expected the project will come in under budget.
