Art turned to coins Royal Canadian Mint uses drawings by Tsawwassen’s John Horton BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
Local marine artist John Horton designed a pair of commemorative coins that were recently released by the Royal Canadian Mint. One of the coins, unveiled earlier this month in Nova Scotia, helps celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Louisbourg settlement. The silver coin depicts a waterfront scene and includes a fisherman unloading his catch. “The interesting part is all the research you have to do,” said Horton, who lives in Tsawwassen.
“They are very particular about the accuracy of what you’re depicting.” Louisbourg was the centre of French power in the Atlantic region during the first half of the 18th century, the mint’s website notes, adding it was a major hub for fishing and trading ships. The other coin, released last month, depicts the capture of the USS Chesapeake by HMS Shannon during a naval battle from the War of 1812. The encounter, which actually took place in the summer of 1813, is described as one of the bloodiest naval battles of the conflict.
That coin was released in gold, silver and limited platinum versions. Plaster carvings were made from his pencil drawings, Horton explained, noting the carvings were scanned down to the finished size of the coins. “The Royal Canadian Mint is known world-wide for crafting coins which stand out for their rich designs and exceptional quality and we are proud to delight our customers with spectacular new pieces of numismatic art with uniquely Canadian stories to tell,” said Ian E. Bennett, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.

Reach reaches funding milestone
Capital campaign to build centre for special needs kids in heart of Ladner has hit the $1 million mark BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Reach Child and Youth Development Society has hit a milestone in its fundraising campaign to build a child development centre in the heart of Ladner. Thanks to several recent sizable corporate donations, as well as strong community support from groups like the Delta Agricultural Society, Reach has hit the $1 million mark on the way to its $4 million goal. “We received a lot of community support and we’re really focusing now on the corporate sector,” Reach Foundation chair Barbara Wallick told the Optimist. “I’m really excited that we reached $1 million, and this is the result of recent funding commitments from the portrelated companies, including Westshore Terminals, and the proceeds from Port Metro Vancouver’s gala.” The project is a partnership between the society, the Corporation of Delta and the Ladner-Tsawwassen Kinsmen Cub. Reach formed a separate foundation, chaired by Wallick, aimed at helping the society reach the ambitious fundraising goal by 2015. Wallick noted the portrelated companies and others that have recently given are spreading the word about the project, helping Reach get closer to other

potential corporate donors. Delta will provide the land, valued at $1 million, while it’s up to the society and foundation to raise the money to build the 20,000square-foot facility on the edge of Memorial Park. The Kinsmen Club will use space in the new building, while the facility will give Reach a much larger and updated place to provide programs for youth with special needs. The
Police warn public about spike in bicycle thefts
Delta police are reminding residents to keep their bikes locked at all times after a recent spike in thefts in Ladner. “Over the course of the past few weeks, Delta police have noted an increase in thefts of bicycles in Ladner,” said department spokesperson Sgt. Ciaran Feenan. The majority of the thefts have taken place along Ladner Trunk Road, particularly from bike racks around local malls. “There have also been bicycles stolen from residential garages and sheds,” Feenan said. “In some cases, owners are leaving their bikes unlocked to run some errands and when they return their bicycle has been stolen.” Police are reminding

the public to protect their property by securing bikes with quality locks at all times; writing down the serial number of all bikes; and engraving information on bikes that would help identify the rightful owner. Officers and Ladner CoPS volunteers continue to patrol the areas that have been targeted in recent weeks. The Ladner CoPS office also has an engraving machine on hand for loan to the public. Anyone wishing to use the machine is asked to call 604-9404411 to ensure it is available. Anyone with information about the recent increase in bike thefts is asked to call Delta police at 604-946-4411 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.
society also operates two pre-schools where kids with special needs can learn alongside their typicallydeveloped peers. The non-profit group, which was founded in 1959, serves around 900 youths a year. The society’s current centre on 72nd Street in East Ladner is too small and in a less than ideal location. In a presentation to Delta council earlier this month,
society president Rob vanSpronssen noted the rate of autism, in particular, is increasing, which means the demand for Reach’s services will only increase. Having two children of his own with developmental challenges, who are now well functioning young adults, thanks largely to early intervention services, vanSpronssen said it’s critical no child be stuck on a waiting list.
“There are profound social and economic benefits with investment in the early years of childhood. That’s when it pays off,” he said. “So waitlists are a real problem for our kids. You make a kid wait five years and they’ve missed the boat with their brain development, so every dollar invested saves dollars in the long-term. “Many kids with special needs can ultimately
become gainfully employed and some will hold volunteer positions. My oldest boy does just that with the food bank.” vanSpronssen said the location for the new centre is a better spot for many reasons, but it’s also important to be in the heart of the community. “This is not just a functional move, it’s a principle move. Fifty years ago when we first started, it wasn’t very popular to have a disabled child in the community. Boy, has that changed. “By building in a highly accessible, central area of town, we will help children with special needs be part of the community, not apart from the community. We need this new building to get more kids and more family support — double the kids in the mid-term and triple in the long-term.” vanSpronssen said the new centre would enable Reach to offer a wider range of services, including vocational training for highfunctioning youths who have autism. It will also have community space, including meeting rooms and a kitchen, in addition to a new home for the Kinsmen. The goal is to have the centre operational by 2017. Delta Cable takes lead by planting bee-friendly garden on Trunk Rd. Company partners with Earthwise Delta Cable partnered with Earthwise Society and Feed the Bees last week to plant a bee-friendly garden outside the company’s office on Ladner Trunk Road. Employees shoveled, dug, planted and watered as the previous landscaping was replaced with a plethora of bee-friendly foliage. “It’s very important that we help sustain the local bee population,” said Shawn Mudge, Delta Cable’s sales and marketing manager. “The potential impact that a declining bee population could have on our local economy is serious considering the prevalence of agriculture in the Delta area. We’re very proud that
we’re able to help out with this initiative.” The Feed the Bees campaign is a partnership between Earthwise Society and the Delta Chamber of Commerce aimed at encouraging people to support a healthy and sustainable bee population by planting gardens that feed pollinators. Delta Cable’s bee garden, the first of its kind planted by a local business, contains a variety of pollen and nectar-rich plants, which help bees make honey and pollinate local crops throughout the growing season. “Delta Cable is the first business to plant a bee garden at their place of work in Delta,” said Earthwise

Council alerted to extent of child poverty
University Women of South Delta call on Delta to hire social planner after research shows community not immune BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Child poverty in South Delta is much more extensive than first thought, according to research presented by the Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta. The CFUW gave a presentation on Delta’s poverty situation to Delta council at a workshop earlier this month, a meeting that also included representatives from Deltassist and the Delta Children and Youth Committee, which represents more than 25 organizations that work with children and youth. CFUW representatives noted their preliminary research, based on inter-
views last fall, indicates that child poverty is more extensive in Ladner and Tsawwassen than initially believed. It’s a situation that has some children going to school hungry, while many families with children, people with disabilities and seniors are dependent on a food bank or charity for the basic necessities of life. “We found that no elected body is measuring or monitoring the extent of child and family poverty in Delta or researching the gaps in resources for families and individuals, or looking at how they can be addressed,” co-presidents Mary Watson and Shelley Lyons stated in a letter to municipal politicians. They said their research

with those issues, including finding out what provincial and federal programs are available. Doug Sabourin, executive director of Deltassist, agreed that Delta needs a social planner, noting it’s surprising the municipality doesn’t have one. “It’s about livability. We are more than streets and roads and lighting. We’re about the quality of life, and what a social planner and social plan does is really look at the long-term livability in a community,” Sabourin said. Sabourin said it’s surprising that of all the big issues facing the community, according to the Corporation of Delta, none are about people specifi-
cally. Coun. Bruce McDonald, a member of the Delta Children and Youth Committee, said it’s important to take a closer look at the poverty question before coming to a conclusion there’s widespread despair in Delta. He said Delta had looked into child hunger issues with the Delta school board and found a few families spread across the municipality would fall within that poverty threshold, but no one school had anything in double digits. As far as Delta taking a bigger role, developing a social plan might be a good idea, he said, but it might not require a new staff person at municipal hall.

Rwanda has two primary ethnic groups: the cropgrowing Hutu and the Tutsi, the herdsmen. Today they co-exist peacefully, but that was not always the case. Civil war erupted in 1994 with a staggering 800,000 Tutsis killed within a 100day period. The genocide committed by the Hutu disrupted and destroyed the very social and economic fiber of Rwanda. To this day, the country still continues to recover from a war that reversed traditional gender respon-

LIVING MATTERS This weekend — this blessed long weekend — I will follow my plan to a tee. The plan calls on me to unfurl the flag and to sing the anthem and to observe the nation’s birthday. Other than that? Nada. Zero. Zilch. At least, where the home is concerned. I’ve been sure to inform the family. This, I told them, is break time. Chill time. Doing next-to-nothing time. “That’s great!” gushed the husband. And then, with a hint of worry in his voice, he wondered: “What’s break time?” I wouldn’t be cooking, I informed him. Or mixing up lemonade. Or laundering a single sock or washing a single dish or buying a single steak or baking a single potato. “Oh,” said the husband. “Hmm,” said the sons. Some folks, I reminded

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW I guess we now sit back and wait. After months of consultation and a spirited public hearing, civic politicians recently gave approval to legislation that aims to revitalize the Ladner waterfront. The bylaw in question allows Delta to provide municipal property tax exemptions, reduced development cost charges and municipal fee exemptions for eligible projects in what has been termed the Downtown Ladner Waterfront Economic Investment Incentive Zone. Yes, it’s quite a mouthful, but it’s really just a fancy name for that stretch of Chisholm Street west of the government wharf. Pretty much everyone, from residents to the business community to those over at municipal hall, want to see Ladner’s waterfront become a destination point, yet that goal continues to prove elusive. This latest attempt by civic leaders creates financial incentives they hope will attract commercial and mixed-use developments that will in turn entice shoppers to frequent the area. It’s taking a page right out of Field of Dreams: If you build it, they will come. We’ve all seen instances where that premise holds true, but in this case there’s a big “if ” when it comes to whether they will indeed build it. Developers, who have shied away from the waterfront for a variety of reasons, will perhaps give the area another look now that there are financial incentives to do so. After all, the move to offer inducements stems from advice Delta received from a real estate expert after opting out of a deal that would have seen the old Seven Seas site redeveloped into a marketplace. That project was intended to act as a catalyst for waterfront revitalization, but worries over exposure for the public purse ultimately shelved it. So we’re left with a bag of fiscal goodies that we now hope will be sufficient to attract developers to the area. Who am I to question such an approach, but it strikes me that if a developer wanted Delta to not only put up land but also money in order to make the marketplace viable, then are a few breaks on municipal fees and taxes enough to make other projects feasible? The legislation initially included the possibility of six-storey buildings, which would certainly have created interest, but that provision has since been reduced to four due to public outcry. Hopefully there are developers out there that find the legislative package enticing enough they’re willing to put up their own money. I assume we’ll find that out soon enough.
It’s June of your grad year, a time you’ll never forget BRAD SHERWIN
COMMUNITY COMMENT Every June, we celebrate a new crop of graduates from our high schools heading out into the world. This June is different for me, however. Not only is one of those graduates my son, it’s also a year where I have a high school reunion. I’m having a hard time believing that he’s graduating, just like I had a hard time when he finished elementary school. He’s growing up, yet I’ve convinced myself my age stalled about 15 years ago. I’m still trying to figure out why this huge kid with a deep voice and 5 o’clock shadow is calling me Dad. I’ve made a point of telling him, as he studied for final exams and prepares for life after high school, to have fun. June of your grad year
is a time you’ll never forget. Once school is over, you’ll gradually drift away from the people you have spent a lot of your life with up to now. You’ll hang onto a few good friends after high school, while others will move or head in different directions. Chances are, after the Dry Grad on Friday, you won’t see these people as a group until a class reunion. Believe me, I know. This is a reunion year for my grad class, an opportunity to catch up with the people I spent so much time with when I was a teenager. I dug out my school yearbook and flipped through the pages, reliving some old memories. The drama and peer pressure that surrounds you in high school has long since faded, and all that remains is the fun we had in June of our grad year. It’s the feeling of being old enough to be responsible, but with the protection of still being a high school student so others didn’t expect as much from you. Just keep it legal, and the world was ours. When it came time for the reunion, it was a little confusing. The people I saw in the yearbook

had been replaced by what looked to be their parents. Who are all these people? The energy and excitement of Grade 12 had been replaced with maturity and experience of 30 years. My 30th reunion? That makes me... wholly crap, am I really that old? The memories are deep and surface easily. Grad was an important time in our lives, a month we’ll never forget. That’s why I keep telling my son to enjoy this time, to cherish this time, because before you know it, it’s 30 years later and you’ll look back on this time as a highlight in your life. Not to mention you are reminded of it at every reunion, so get the most out of it while you can. Just keep in touch with your parents, because no matter how old you are, we still worry about you. To the class of 2013, I wish you the best for your future. To your parents, I congratulate you on raising a bright, successful child. And to the Grad Class of ‘83, I look forward to seeing you at our 40th reunion. I just hope we’ll recognize each other after another 10 years.

Reader’s a NIMBY when it comes to garbage burner Editor: Re: Two Delta sites make short list, June 19 I have concerns over the proposition to locate an incinerator at any of the proposed sites in the Delta area; in this case, I am definitely a NIMBY. We are living on a flood plain and have a very good system of dikes; but, for a number of reasons, dikes can and have been known to fail. Also, we can never be sure that natural, cyclical climate changes aren’t going to conspire against our infinite wisdom and create a seasonal flood much higher than we ever anticipated. It only takes a small portion of a dike to fail to render it useless, if not harmful. Do I have to mention the
possibility of a tsunami or major earthquake? We are living in an area subject to these natural events, either of which could damage or destroy an incinerator and result in contamination of our environment through the loss of processed materials. What about air quality? Can we be sure these incinerators are not going to be belching toxic fumes or otherwise damaging our air quality? Personally, I don’t trust governments (and certainly not Aquilini, the TFN or Lehigh Cement) to protect our interests on this issue. All of these factors (plus transportation issues) raise concerns over locating an incinerator on lowlands adjacent to the mouth of the
Fraser River. I believe there are much better places for putting an incinerator. If I may, I would like to offer an alternative. There’s a great chunk of land near the corner of 10th Avenue and Cambie Street in Vancouver. It’s a piece of ground that should never be subject to flooding or in danger from a tsunami; there’s a good road system feeding the site; there’s a nearby rapid transit system that could be used to transport garbage in non-peak hours; and finally, there’s already so much air pollution coming from the current occupant that nobody would ever notice any additional air pollution emanating from an incinerator. Just a thought. Paul Mumby
Families that can afford it shouldn’t mind paying FHA’s monthly wheelchair fee Editor: There has been a lot of controversy lately with respect to the $25 a month charge to residents of longterm care for the rental of a wheelchair. Our mother was in Mountain View Manor for
approximately two years and we would have been more than happy to pay $25 a month for the use of a wheelchair. It is our understanding those who cannot afford the monthly rental would be exempt. The purchase and upkeep
of a wheelchair would be a substantial hardship for many residents and their families, so we really feel $25 a month for those who can afford it would be appropriate. Randi Margarit Lynn Cameron

Editor: Ellyana’s Crew and her family would like to extend a very big thank you to the community and to our friends in supporting our quest to find a cure for diabetes. Ellyana was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was three and this is the fourth year she has participated in the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes. Our second annual pub night on May 24 at the Beach Grove Golf Club was a huge success, raising $3,075, all of which will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help find a cure for diabetes. We want to especially say thank you to the businesses in Ladner and Tsawwassen that contributed towards the

Concern yourself with Ladner issues Editor: Re: Silent group must speak up on Southlands, letter to the editor, June 21 Joyce Schmidt writes that she once lived in Tsawwassen but now lives in Ladner and fully supports Century Group’s plan for Southlands. She encourages others, like her, to let Delta council know of their support. As a resident of Ladner, if the proposed application
is approved, there will be no consequences for Schmidt. She will not have to deal with the constant stream of trucks driving through Tsawwassen with fill for the project, she will not have to deal with the inevitable traffic problems or parking issues the project is bound to produce. Editor: Something is wrong with the way one gets on the list for question period at Delta council’s weekly meeting. On June 10, I planned to address council on the lack of activity of the Delta Seniors Advisory Committee chaired by Mayor Lois Jackson. As advised on the website, I went to register at municipal hall promptly at 3 o’clock, but was informed the list was full even though there was no one else there. I understand after reading the Optimist that I was preempted by opponents of the Marina Gardens proposal. They had phoned in their registration. Not fair. I was put on the list for June 17. I spoke my piece to council but, of course, the committee chair had gone to Europe to look at ports. If council has rules, they should be enforced for everyone. Gerry Bouman

Spa event supports Hospice
Ground broken on clubhouse at ‘Springs’
Phu Thai Spa presented the Delta Hospice Society with a cheque for $800 raised at a recent outdoor spa event. The spa, which has been overwhelmed with support since opening last year, decided to give back by hosting an evening that also featured live entertainment and a fully catered menu. “We are so appreciative of the support from the community. Thank you to all who participated in this event,” said Delta Hospice executive director Nancy Macey. “One hundred per cent of the money that was raised will go directly to helping people in our community.” Phu Thai Spa offers a full menu of spa services in a safe, quiet, private environment in Ladner.

The 32,000-square-foot building will house a bar, restaurant, banquet facility and pro shop as well as other commercial tenants, including Tsawwassen Wellness Centre, Sungod Sports + Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Clinic and Seafair Gourmet Meats & Specialty Grocery. Grapes 4 U is once again named U-Vint of the Year For the fourth year in a row, Ladner’s Grapes 4 U was named U-Vint of the Year at WineMaker Magazine’s annual International Amateur Wine Competition. From April 19 to 21, a total of 4,564 bottles of wine were tasted and judged by experienced, professional panels. The wines came from all over the world, including all 50 American states, eight provinces and nine countries. It is the largest wine competition of its kind in the world. Over the three days, judges spent 2,282 hours tasting and examining all the entries using the University of California — Davis 20-point wine scale. This evaluates appearance, aroma, taste, aftertaste and overall impression of each entry. The wines were entered

Tsawwassen photographer Stephanie Chan offers clients an artistic approach since starting her own business last summer.
Artistic flair to photos Photographer Stephanie Chan has been tackling a range of projects since starting her business last summer. “I’ve been getting a lot of people calling in for various sorts of photography projects,” she says. Chan, who lives in Tsawwassen, likes to offer more of a creative and artistic vision/approach to photos thanks to her
background in the arts. She studied at Kwantlen and then Emily Carr, taking on a whole bunch of mediums ranging from painting, screen printing to darkroom photography. She switched to digital cameras, began blogging and eventually had people asking her to take photos for them. She describes herself as creative individual whose
brain is always on the go and producing new ideas. “Whatever people are looking for, when they come to my site and see my style and like it, it doesn’t really matter to me what the event is,” she says. “If they’re looking for that style, or my eye, then I’m happy to do it.” To view some of Chan’s work visit her website thepauhaus.com.

Co-owners Kelly McCloskey (left) and Sandy McKellar opened the Wood N Frog Coffee Company in Tsawwassen last October.
Coffee shop with a twist The Wood N Frog Coffee Company opened last October and things have been great early on for coowners Kelly McCloskey and Sandy McKellar. “The community’s been very welcoming, very supportive. We have been really fortunate in getting some amazing staff, who make this place tick,” says McKellar. The Wood N Frog roasts its own beans, offers unique food choices and is now open evenings (Thursday to
Saturday). McCloskey says the establishment will introduce more interesting food choices, music and will serve alcoholic beverages in the evening. “None of our food items are traditional or simple, they all have a bit of an exotic twist or flair to them. We play with spicing and we play with that aromatic taste experience,” explains McKellar. She adds that winning their first Readers’ Choice
Award was a testament to the hard work they put in to putting the place together. “We were very surprised and delighted, having not even been open a year. The fact our customers stood up and spoke so clearly is really very flattering,” says McKellar. The Wood N Frog Coffee Company is located at 5694-12th Ave., Tsawwassen. It has a blog (http:// woodnfrog.wordpress.com) and a page on Facebook.

Meridian well received
It certainly didn’t take long for Meridian Farm Market to become a hit with Optimist readers. The market opened in March at the former site of Jack’s TV in Tsawwassen and can already say it’s a Readers’ Choice Award winner. The family-run company opened its first store in 1989 in Port Coquitlam and has added stores Maple Ridge, Langley, White Rock
OGNSN AX
and Tsawwassen. The Tsawwassen location is the first to offer produce and other food items instead of solely specializing in meat and seafood. “It’s a community fresh food market, specializing in fresh local produce, fresh baked breads, deli, dairy and a high-quality selection of meats, seafood and delicacies you won’t find anywhere else,” president Josh Penner explains on the
company website. “We still hold true to the values and principles that made our first shop a success 25 years ago. We’re focused on giving you good old fashion friendly service and quality products that we are happy to serve at our family table.” Meridian Farm Market is located at 1202A 56th St, Tsawwassen. Visit the store online at www.meridianfarmmarket.ca.

Fusion Boutique owner Vivienne Potts added clothing to the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall store’s inventory about a year ago.
Fusion expands stock
Fusion Boutique in Tsawwassen added clothing to its repertoire about a year ago and hasn’t looked back since. “This is a new venture here, the clothing side,” notes owner Vivienne Potts. “It’s just doing really, really well. We have amazing lines in here.” Examples include Bailey44, described on the company’s website as the “brand for the effort-
lessly sexy, agelessly cool woman,” as well as La Fee, Nougat and Fluxus. Fusion started as a shoe store and has been open for about a decade. “The store has become a one-stop shop,” says Potts. “You’ve got clothing, you’ve got shoes, you’ve got handbags, we have underwear, jewelry. It’s everything.” Potts says she was thrilled to get a Readers’
Choice Award for the first time. She also notes the boutique has awesome customers who’d rather shop locally and are “amazingly” loyal. “I’m so appreciative of my customers,” she says. Fusion Boutique can be found at 127-1315-56th St. (next to B.C. Liquor Store) at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. Call 604-9488034.

Doug Ross (left) and Tyler Brost are business partners in Bayview Construction, which has been doing renovations and new construction for the last decade.
Building their business Doug Ross and Tyler Brost have been building a good name for themselves with Bayview Construction. The business partners have been running the company for just over 10 years. “I think it’s great,” says Brost, commenting on Bayview’s first Optimist Readers’ Choice Award win. “It’s good for business. That’s what we’re trying to do — provide a quality
service.” Ross notes he and Brost both grew up in Delta and that they now do a good portion of their work in Tsawwassen, Ladner and Sunshine Hills. Bayview does work for a variety of clients, including the Corporation of Delta, big businesses and homeowners. Projects range from building a deck to “some-
thing like this,” says Ross, meaning a 13,000-squarefoot house under construction in Tsawwassen where he and Brost talked to the Optimist. The company does both renovations and new construction. “A bit of everything,” says Ross. To get in touch with Bayview Construction call 604-968-2587.

Delta Secondary students traveled to Stave Lake last month to work on a cabin.
DSS students build cabin BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
A group of Delta Secondary students in the Grade 12 carpentry and joinery course worked on a cabin at Stave Lake last month. The annual project is a big part of the career preparation program, says teacher Wayne McKinnon. “The kids learn best by doing,” he said. Eleven students made the trip to Stave Lake, working nine- to 10-hour days for just over a week on the cabin for owners Gordon and Marian DeSmet.
Students worked on the frame throughout the year at school, disassembled the structure into movable sections, took it to the permanent location by truck and worked on more framing. “These boys did a great job building our cabin and need to be recognized for their efforts,” the DeSmets in an e-mail to the Optimist. About 25 students worked on the cabin over the course of the school year. McKinnon is looking for another project for next year’s class. If you’re interested, contact him at wmckinnon@deltasd.bc.ca.

DSS metal shop gets new equipment!!!
Excerpted article from Delta School District website: http://web.deltasd.bc.ca/news/136
Thanks to the generous support from Scott McGill at Ideal Gear and Ryan Barbour at A.C.T. Equipment Delta Secondary School has new equipment in its metal shop. Ideal Gear is a modern, high-tech machine shop in Delta, and Scott McGill is a manager there. Scott is also an alumnus of Delta Secondary, and he remembers fondly his time in the DSS Metal Shop some years ago. Now, it's his son's turn to take classes here, so Scott has become interested in the DSS Metal Shop once again! When Scott learned about the strides DSS has been making to modernize its facilities, he came by the Metal Shop to casually audit the facility and to offer his expert professional advice and opinions on what might be improved - and then he took it one huge step further. Scott talked to Ryan Barbour of A.C.T. Equipment, one of the tooling suppliers used by Ideal Gear, and they worked together to compile a donation of new Carbide cutters and holder for the lathes. This means that DSS students have an experience more reflecting what they'll find in the real-world, and that's a win-win situation for the students, the school, and the community they will move through once they graduate! Community support is very much appreciated by the schools, and there is no better example of that than the kindness (and legwork!) shown by Scott McGill and everyone at Ideal Gear, and Ryan Barbour at A.C.T. Equipment. Our thanks go out to them!

Islanders reset goals after lost week
Junior lacrosse team will miss out on top two finish and opening round bye after falling to New West and Victoria BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
A lost week on and off the floor has at least left the Delta Islanders with a clearer picture heading to the final two weeks of the regular season in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League. Any hopes of a second place finish and a favourable road towards the franchise’s first-ever berth into the Minto Cup were dashed with losses to the New Westminster Salmonbellies and Victoria Shamrocks. The Islanders hung tough with the Bellies through two periods at Queen’s Park Arena before dropping a 10-4 decision. The loss to the Shamrocks was of the gut-wrenching variety as the Island visitors scored eight power play goals to pull out a wild 17-16 victory on Saturday. The Islanders (10-8) now sit in fifth place with three games remaining including tonight’s rare mid-week home tilt against the Nanaimo Timbermen at 7 p.m. They had hoped to shore up their line-up by acquiring goaltender Pete Dubenski and runner Mitch Parker from the Timbermen for the second straight year prior to the league’s Canada Day roster deadline. However, Nanaimo has since backed out of a potential deal, leaving the Isles no choice but to move forward with what they have. Head coach Shaun Springett’s biggest concern is the back end.
Cody Nass is well on his way to winning the league scoring title with 98 points in 17 games, including 10 against Victoria. Teammate Eli McLaughlin sits in second while Evan Messenger, captain Mike Henry and Tyler Nett are among the top 25. The Islanders must defend better in front of a rotation of goalies since number one starter Will Schwan has been lost for the entire season as he recovers from a series of concussions. The work began at Monday night’s practice session. “We have some guys who can handle man-to-man defence and some who can’t,” said Springett. “We have switched it up a bit to the point where we have one unit that will play man and the other will play zone. Hopefully we will be better and it will be tougher for our opponents to figure what we are doing on each possession. “We just gave that game away against Victoria. We are the league’s least penalized team so it’s normally it’s not an issue but we took some undisciplined penalties. The biggest thing was our key short man players were in the box for a lot of time leaving us with little options.” Springett was referring to a second period stretch that saw Taylor Northway, Cody Cowx and Mike Donaldson take a combined 17 minutes in penalties, resulting in lengthy two-man advantages for the Shamrocks and five power play goals.

Delta Islanders captain Mike Henry battles with Victoria Shamrocks Jamie Sorensen during Saturday’s B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League game at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The Islanders fell 17-16 in overtime. Delta trailed 14-11 midway through the third period before rallying back to force overtime, including a goal from McLaughin with 46 seconds remaining. Messenger had the biggest night
of his young and promising junior career. The Ladner native, who began the season at the intermediate level, finished with 11 points, including five goals. After hosting Nanaimo, Delta
doesn’t return to action until July 4 with a key game in Langley against the third place Thunder before hosting the front-running Coquitlam Adanacs two nights later to close out league play.
Giants job brings Erhart back to the rink where it all began

he earned a full-ride scholarship, Erhart began his coaching career with the South Delta Minor Hockey Association. An impressive run concluded with guiding the Bantam A1 Storm to a rare berth into the provincial championships. That team included former Vancouver Giants star and Montreal Canadiens rookie standout Brendan Gallagher. The roster also featured Josh Nichols, Colton Jobke, Taylor Peters and Spencer Humphries who have all signed pro contracts. Erhart moved onto the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League where he came within an overtime goal of guiding the
Greater Vancouver Canadians to a provincial title. The 34-year-old then landed with the team where he enjoyed a standout junior “A” career as a player. He spent three seasons behind the Eagles bench. “It’s a bittersweet day when you have to leave a program that you’ve been a part of as a player and a coach,” said Erhart. “The Eagles gave me a great opportunity to be a head coach and general manager in the BCHL, and I’ll always be thankful for that. “With the Giants, it’s a chance to further my coaching career, and I couldn’t pass it up.”

HARRIS, Edith 1916 - 2013
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother and Granny, Edith, who passed away on June 21, 2013, just a week short of her 97th birthday. Throughout Edith’s life, she enjoyed many pleasures. In her younger years, she was very active in her church and still attended regularly, later in life. She also enjoyed gardening and especially took care in tending to her rose garden. Above all, her family was very important to her; from sharing lattes with her grandchildren to babysitting her great-grandchildren. Even in her last week of life, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her joy and delight. Edith was predeceased by her husband Steve in 1982, after 44 years of marriage. She will be remembered as a loving mother, trusted friend and grandmother to her children; Marilyn (Gordon), Ron (Marietta), and Lois (Ken), grandchildren Todd (Heather), Brent (Shelly), Tracy (Dave), Jeff (Joyce) and great-grandchildren Miranda, Jackson, Delaney, Connor, Kale, Brody, Camryn, Kali, Kate and Ava. Edith has forever touched the lives of everyone she met and leaves her family with a lifetime of wonderful memories. “We’re going to miss you Mom.” The family expresses their thanks to Kin Village for the excellent care provided to Edith. A Celebration of Edith’s life will be held on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Ladner Baptist Church, 5624 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC with a reception to follow. Edith’s wishes were, that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver: www.ugm.ca.
