Old and new usher in the holidays
A new holiday tradition was launched in Ladner Village last week while old favourites are set to return this weekend. The Ladner Business Association’s first-ever Christmas Tree Festival last Thursday evening got the season going with entertainment by Tony Barton Tony Barton and others. Holiday merriment continues this Friday evening when the carol ships sail into Ladner Harbour. They make a return appearance on Saturday. Saturday is also the day of the annual Breakfast with Santa at the Ladner Community Centre. • See Page 40 for photos and Layar video from the tree fest, while Page 38 has details of the weekend events.
Residents rally against towers Proposal prompts demonstrations on both sides of the border BY

Residents opposed to an application to build radio transmission towers just across the border in Point Roberts held rallies on both sides of the line Sunday. The early afternoon protest saw almost 150 South Deltans gather on 56th Street, not far from the border, while a simultaneous rally in Point Roberts drew an even bigger crowd. They were trying to raise awareness about a highly controversial proposal by BBC
Broadcasting Inc. to construct five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot just south of the border with Tsawwassen.
SCAN WITH TO REVEAL PHOTOS & VIDEO Noting the towers have been a huge problem in Ferndale, Wash., David Bowyer told the Optimist the company behind the application is shameful in trying to build them in the middle of a residential area.
An engineering report submitted by the applicant notes BBC sought a new transmitter site “that would relieve Ferndale residents of the problems that the current location has caused in an effort to repair ties with a community that no longer wants a transmitter site and is unwilling to support the station.” The biggest concerns centre on the interference towers cause for household electronic devices. One of the criteria for the new site was an area of lower populaSee TOWERS page 3

A Ladner farm house suffered extensive damage after a fire last week. The fire broke out late Thursday afternoon at the house in the 4100-block of 88th Street. Delta Fire Department Deputy Chief Ken Sim said the call came in as a fridge on fire and the house was already fully engulfed when crews arrived on scene. One person had to be treated for smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries, he said. Sim said it took crews a couple hours to extinguish the blaze. The fire is still under investigation. Sim said investigators were on scene Thursday and were back again Friday. “It’s going to take some work to find the cause,” he said.

FortisBC expanding Tilbury LNG facility $400 million expansion to provide transportation customers cleaner alternative to diesel BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The provincial government has paved the way for a huge FortisBC liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant expansion in Delta. The province announced last week it’s supporting FortisBC’s proposed $400 million expansion of its Tilbury LNG facility by waiving the standard requirement for a review by the B.C. Utilities Commission as well as lowering a gas dispensing fee that had been recommended by the commission. The expansion is primarily aimed at the growing interest by the transportation sector to use LNG, so the province will also provide increased incentives to
convert. The moves position FortisBC to provide LNG to transportation customers as a cleaner alternative to diesel, according to the government, adding the facility is expected to be providing LNG fuel by mid-2016. “Government wanted to get out of the way and allow the transportation fuel component of the LNG industry develop quickly,” said Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett. “This $400-million investment in FortisBC’s Tilbury LNG Facility will build B.C.’s marketplace for the world’s cleanest fuel, LNG, and create over 300 personyears of employment in the Lower Mainland.” Minister of Natural Gas Development Rich Coleman
TOWERS from page 1 tion density, but the presence of Tsawwassen has been left off the application. The report also mentions Point Roberts is seen as acceptable because it’s “economically depressed” and has several suitable parcels. Point resident Suzanne Rosser, a member of the Point Roberts Conservation Society and the coalition
group Stop the Towers, said residents in her area are concerned their community will be viewed as an industrial zone and dumping ground for unwanted transmission facilities. “When the Verizon tower was proposed for Point Roberts, most of the neighbourhood didn’t think much of it, thinking they would finally get cell phone
said B.C. has a vast supply of natural gas to meet global demands and local markets. John Walker, president and CEO of FortisBC, said the expansion would result in increased LNG supply,
creating opportunities for industrial users and remote communities. The plan still requires FortisBC board approval and additional regulatory and environmental permits and approvals, includ-
ing the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission. In operation since 1971, the LNG plant at Tilbury cools natural gas into a liquid state for storage. It’s then converted back into gas vapour and delivered by pipeline during periods of high demand. It’s also delivered by tanker truck to customers. The current storage tank at Tilbury can hold 0.6 billion standard cubic feet. The expansion includes another storage tank that can hold up to one billion standard cubic feet. The proposal already has zoning approval from Delta. FortisBC says its plant has a variety of special features designed for the safe handling of liquefied natural gas.
service. I said, ‘Beware of what you want because once you put it here, there’s going to be others.’ “Sure enough, Verizon did get to be constructed there, however, it only serves about 20 per cent of the population, while now all the consortiums are staking a claim.” The towers would transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which broadcasts from Richmond. The FCC last year grant-
ed a construction permit for the towers but a conditional use permit is still required from Whatcom County. Opponents have hired a lawyer to challenge the FCC decision. Residents here want Industry Canada to urge the FCC to review the application due to the omission of Tsawwassen in the application. Andrew Skotdal, a consultant for the radio station, told The Vancouver Sun in an emailed statement that
KRPI “is looking forward to addressing all of the issues soon.” He previously noted that Tsawwassen residents weren’t included in site maps because KRPI was following the rules of Whatcom County, under which it was only obligated to consider residents of that jurisdiction. Whatcom County’s planning department is expected to release its recommendation in the next few weeks.

A local parent concerned about changes to the South Delta Public Health Unit says the message about the future of health care in the community appears mixed. Niamh Plaxton and several other residents met with Fraser Health officials, including CAO Dr. Nigel Murray, late last month to discuss a plan to amalgamate staff at the South Delta unit with the unit in North Delta. The South Delta centre in the Ladner civic precinct is to be maintained as a “satellite” location. “Overall, we were happy we received answers to our

Users of the South Delta Public Health Unit held a rally in October in response to pending changes. questions and we do feel they were pretty transparent,” said Plaxton, who organized a rally in October to protest the changes. “We wanted to let them know that people here are generally very happy with the public health service that has been delivered in South Delta. That’s why people were concerned when they heard about changes.” She said they were informed all nurses will be located out of the North Delta unit, however they will travel to Ladner to deliver services at certain times. The amalgamation will result in several nursing layoffs. Plaxton said drop-in services will be available but will be reduced once the changes go into effect next month. The FHA confirmed all mandated services will continue, but those currently available by phone will be done by nurses situated in North Delta. “It’s definitely a loss, although officially it’s not a loss,” Plaxton said. She noted drop-in sessions for new mothers, for example, have been reduced to a couple of hours per week in Ladner, which could be difficult for those struggling with issues or with unidentified post-partum depression. Noting a speech therapist position has been eliminated altogether, Plaxton said she was told there were no plans to announce the changes publicly because the FHA felt there would be no noticeable change in service. “We asked them what do they have in place to measure that. It became clear during our discussions that there were no plans in place to measure whether the restructuring was a success
in terms of that presumption we wouldn’t notice any change in the level of service. “We were encouraged they did commit to measuring this, and are open to input from South Delta residents how this might be measured, and additionally they agreed to meet with us in the future to discuss the results.” Plaxton said losing actual bodies in the unit, even though services are to be maintained, will likely result in some kind of impact. She said while there isn’t an active community organization dealing with health care issues in South Delta, the fact many people quickly joined a Facebook group she helped start, as well as the large crowd that showed up at the rally, shows residents are deeply in tune with the issues. “Our fear is that they’re boiling the frog. They’re not coming in and doing big cuts all at once. It’s bitby-bit, slice-by-slice, and before we know it, the frog is boiled and it’s done, but we hadn’t noticed the water getting any hotter,” she said. When the meeting was confirmed, the health region issued a statement saying, “Fraser Health is committed to maintaining the integrity and availability of public health in Delta. Our first priority is to ensure the health and wellness of people in the community and our intent is to enhance our ability to meet the demand for services across the community.” The South Delta Public Health Unit, one of 18 currently operated by the region, provides a variety of services from breastfeeding clinics and HIV/AIDS/ hepatitis support to chronic disease prevention and tuberculosis testing.

A local community group is once again taking its antiviolence message out to the community this week as the nation recognizes a day devoted to action on violence against women. Friday, Dec. 6 marks the 24th anniversary of the murder of 14 women, and another 13 were wounded, at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique. The victims were shot simply for being women. Since 1991, the day has been recognized as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and this year the DOVE (Delta Opposes Violence Everywhere) committee is getting out to bring public awareness to the issue of violence against women. DOVE is a committee of community agencies that work together to end violence in relationships. The committee includes representatives from

Be patient as it may take several times before she confides in you. • Be empathetic, attentive and respectful. • Listen to her and believe what she tells you. Do not judge or criticize. • Reassure her that the abuse is not her fault. • Help her to stay safe — use a code word to signal when she is in danger. • Call 911 for her if needed. • Encourage her to use local services that can offer specialist support and advice. • Encourage her to think about her safety and the needs of her children. • Focus on supporting her and building her self confidence. The committee’s objective is to increase public awareness surrounding violence in any type of relationship and it works to reduce any gaps or duplications in services that may exist in the community. To mark the day, DOVE
committee members will be at various locations around the community. On Friday, the committee is hosting displays during the lunch hour at several local high schools, including South Delta Secondary. As well, DOVE will be at the Save-on-Foods at Scottsdale Mall in North Delta that day. On Saturday, the committee will set up at the Ladner Leisure Centre from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW It’s been about a decade so I suspect both of us look a little longer in the tooth, but when you talk about change, the place we once shared is the one that has undergone the most profound transformation. Those who have been associated with this newspaper for a while might remember the name Trevor Rate. Trev was a photographer for the Optimist for a number of years, an ex-pat Brit who never met a joke, or a pint, he didn’t like. I have many good memories of time spent with Trev, including his Benny Hill sense of humour that often got him in a mess of trouble. I trade emails with Trev every so often and fired one off to him last month after Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the Philippines, where he’s been making his home for the last 10 years. Thankfully for him the storm struck 400 miles to the south, so he’s just fine, as are his son and the new lady friend in his life. During the course of our back and forth Trev inquired about all the changes happening here, a place his heart has never really left. He continues to keep tabs on South Delta from afar, using our website to stay up to date on familiar people and places. When I attempted to succinctly summarize everything that has taken place, as well as all that’s on the drawing board in these parts, it hit home at what a daunting list I was compiling. I told Trev how the old Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club, a place we had played many enjoyable rounds together, has now become Tsawwassen Springs, complete with a sizable housing component. I listed developments on the Southlands and at Marina Gardens, a new highway and the prospect of a new bridge to replace the tunnel, an expanded container port with another on the way as well as all the supporting infrastructure, and the Tsawwassen First Nation’s massive development plans, including a pair of mega malls. Many of the projects on that list are still in the planning or approval stages, so we haven’t really seen the impacts these undertakings will have on the community, but give it a few more years and their full force will become abundantly clear. In one of the emails, my old friend said, judging from what he’s read and what I’ve told him, he might find it tough to recognize many parts of South Delta. There are differences from a decade ago, to be sure, but, for the most part, I think he’d recall the place fondly. If Trev doesn’t get back here soon, however, he could well be returning to a foreign place.
Addressing poverty goes well beyond doling out tax dollars TOM SIBA PUBLISHER’S PERSPECTIVE You must have heard by now: B.C.’s child poverty rate is a provincial embarrassment. At least so says First Call: B.C. Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition. They say they got their information from Statistics Canada for 2011. When their report was issued, it was the hot topic for a few days and then faded from the headlines. I am sure the First Call people, whomever they might be, are well meaning. They are, after all, hosted by Family Services of the Lower Mainland, and supported by the United Way, the Vancouver Foundation, Vancity and the Health Sciences Association of B.C. First Call calls themselves “nonpartisan.” Unfortunately their 2013 Child Poverty Report Card reads like a screed put together by the far left wing of the New Democratic Party. Since the report has the support of the Social Planning and
Research Council of B.C., one must assume there are social planning proponents about. One thing I’ve learned about members of this group is that they are humourless and don’t take well to opinions that are not aligned with their left wing group think. So it is with some trepidation that I critique their effort. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and say they got the numbers right. The way they did the calculations is somewhat vague in the report, but no doubt poverty is an issue to be addressed in many venues. However, the report leaves a lot to be desired beyond clarity. There are 16 recommendations in the report. Having told you they appear to be the work of the far left of the NDP, you can probably guess their main theme. That’s right. Dole out more taxpayers’ cash in any way possible. The first two proposals of the 16 recommendations suggest an increase in the minimum wage to $12 per hour from the current $10. (Didn’t know there were a lot of kids working for minimum wage.) The next eight recommendations are for increases in a variety of benefits. Recommendation #10 is to

change the tax system by reducing income inequality. That must be social planning code for taxing away more of the earnings of people who work. I guess First Call aims to make us all poorer, so we could have more wards of the state. The final six recommendations call for, among other things, money for daycare, tuition fees, more EI benefits, enhanced maternity leave and social housing. Nothing on improving the economy or increasing the number of jobs in the province. Of course, the social planning proponents I have heard from don’t believe a good economy helps alleviate poverty. Also nothing to enhance individual efforts to get out of poverty. The proposals are not costed and there is no discussion on how to pay for the expanded list of government goodies, although that is probably hidden in recommendation #10 with altering the tax system. The recommendations in the report do little to help people get out of poverty. The focus is to permanently dole out taxpayers’ money rather than dealing with the issues causing family poverty. Unfortunately, not a very useful or well thought out report — but I’m sure they meant well.

SFPR makes it tough to get to Ladner Birthstone Locket ways and there was always this one piece that ran along the side of the highway that I could never quite fit in. It just ended beside the overpass above the railway. Now I understand. This is the single lane that will now take me back to Ladner. It’s one little lane that weaves up and over this brand new highway. The only thing missing is the 50 km/h sign with a warning saying tractors have the right of way. That got me thinking: What else might be wrong? And here’s the clincher:
Let’s say you’re heading south to Ladner and miss the exit from Highway 99. So you get off the SFPR going to the coal port because you see Highway 17 down there to your right and figure you’ll just make the quick little join and be back in Ladner in no time. Nope. They won’t let you! Let’s say you’re at the coal port and want to go back to Ladner on Highway 17. Nope. They won’t let you do that either! There is no connection from
the SFPR to go north on Highway 17. They don’t want those big bad trucks, the same ones that are using the road now, and have been using it for ages, on the road. And how do you accomplish this? Just don’t build an access road, and not just for trucks, but for any vehicle. I encourage anyone that has not looked at the maps on the South Fraser Perimter Road website to do so, and maybe they will notice something I have not. Terry Henry
Tsawwassen doesn’t want Ferndale’s problems Editor: I would like to voice my strong opposition to the proposed relocation of the KRPI radio transmitter towers from Ferndale, Wash., to a location along the border in Point Roberts. KRPI is relocating in light of continuing interference problems and to relieve Ferndale residents of the problems the current location has caused. Regrettably, this move will simply relocate these same problems to the signifi-
cantly larger community of Tsawwassen. The background interference coming through phones, TVs, stereos and Internet is well documented in Ferndale and will be experienced here in Tsawwassen. There is the potential of devaluation of homes and, most importantly, there are health concerns surrounding radio towers. Who wants or deserves this? Locating five large AM tower transmitters so close
to a residential community is absurd. These towers should be in a rural area. This is the absolutely wrong location for these towers. These towers will affect all residents of Tsawwassen, not just the homes along the border. The majority of residents of Point Roberts are opposed to the towers being built in their community and they are mounting opposition. We need to quickly join in with our neighbours to the south and bring our large Tsawwassen

Editor: As a resident of Ladner, my curiosity has been heightened as the South Fraser Perimter Road nears its conclusion. I will say that I have been a proponent of the need to build another east-west connection and have always thought this road was built several years too late, so I have welcomed its construction. While driving once or twice a week to Tsawwassen I would look over at the ongoing road-

Editor: Re: Sky isn’t falling despite all those recycled arguments, letter to the editor, Nov. 27 Once again we have been subjected to a tirade from Firth Bateman discrediting the citizens of Tsawwassen who speak up for retaining the agricultural zoning on the Southlands. He attempts to ridicule us by using phrases such as “the sky isn’t falling” and “complainers.” He tries to belittle us by inferring we haven’t done our homework or we don’t understand that
all questions of concern have been addressed. Like the mayor, he thinks he is looking at the “big picture” and knows better than people “who don’t like change.” Well, he is wastefully wagging his vitriolic tongue. A majority of people know, and understand, that Boundary Bay and the surrounding uplands are key components of the number one Important Bird Area in Canada. The importance of the Southlands as an integral part of this environmen-
tally-sensitive area is recognized by famous wildlife artist Robert Bateman. Robert Bateman wrote to Delta council voicing concerns about housing construction on the Southlands, stating that if the valuable farmland and ecosystem were affected by fill, water table disturbances and work on infrastructure, then, in his opinion, it would be a shortsighted and misguided act. I guess Firth Bateman thinks he is just another “complainer.” Susan Jones
Rotarians gratified by public’s support Editor: It’s great to live in South Delta. Service clubs play an integral part in our community, undertaking so many volunteer projects to give back. A few times over the past few weeks the residents have shown their appreciation. The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen has been doing a beautification project in Diefenbaker Park over the past few weekends regardless of the wind and rain.
While Rotarians were slogging away in the rain, residents of South Delta would drive by, honk and give the thumbs up. A few parked on the side of the road and yelled out thanks, while one neighbour opened their home to 15 strangers (Rotarians), offering their solarium so there would be a warm, dry place to have lunch. While selling lottery calendars in front of the supermarkets to raise funds so
we can do more community projects, we hear, “Thanks for the water park, we really enjoy it.” Comments like that give volunteers the drive to do more knowing the community is enjoying the use of the amenities and are grateful for all the volunteer hours and dollars spent in our community. Thanks to all. Rotarians love to give back. Leslie Abramson Rotary Club of Tsawwassen

Vancouver on the proposed Fraser Surrey Docks expansion. The study, by experts such as Dr. Leonard Ritter, professor emeritus of toxicology at the University of Guelph’s School of Environmental Sciences, shows many complaints by environmental groups and others are misinformed or exaggerated. The assessment states that: “The project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental, socio-economic, or health effects, taking into account the implementation of the main risk mitigation measures described above, in addition to mitigation measures, construction and operation management plans, best management and standard practices.” These conclusions match our experience in safely transporting coal for over 40 years. This is important to us as unions because the mining and export of B.C. metallurgical coal for steel manufacturing in other countries is a critical part of the provincial economy, as is transportation of thermal coal. It provides good, familysupporting jobs for thousands of our members, who along with their employers, pay municipal, provincial and federal taxes that support health care, education and other valuable government social programs we all depend on. Overall, coal creates 26,000 direct and indirect jobs, $3.2 billion in economic activities and $715 million in tax revenues for the province and B.C. municipalities every year. Recent comments in the media have questioned the mining and export of coal for a variety of reasons, including health. We are not medical doctors but we are democratically elected by our members to be responsible for their health and safety. And as the unions whose members mine, load and
transport coal by rail to ports and ship it overseas, we can say with certainty that coal dust and exposure have simply not appeared in our members as a health issue. Safety is our primary concern and we believe the measures taken to limit and reduce coal dust exposure to far below levels established by government have ensured our members have safe workplaces. Those workers and their families are also residents of Metro Vancouver and other B.C. communities who often live near the coal mines, rail lines and port facilities where they work. So we not only have responsibility for workers when they are on the job but when they go home as well. Put simply, if our members’ health were adversely affected by coal or exposure to dust, we would know and we would be the first to demand action. Unfortunately, the goals of many environmental groups and others who oppose coal port expansion go far beyond the issue of fugitive dust emissions. Their objective is to end the extraction and use of coal, as well as other fossil fuels, over climate change issues. Improvements can and are being made to more efficiently use coal for steel production and power, but to tell developing nations to shut down their factories and go home in the dark is fundamentally unfair. It would only cause huge economic hardship. Mark Gordienko is president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union [ILWU] Canada; Steve Hunt is director of the United Steel Workers [USW] District 3 [Western Canada]; Brian Cochrane is business manager for International Union of Operating Engineers [IUOE] Local 115; Tom Sigurdson is executive director of B.C. I was recently very privileged to be taken by Reverend Short on a tour of the ongoing renovation of the Ladner United Church. The building is a fine example of how a restoration can be done to retain and improve the heritage aspects of the original church while providing enhanced areas for use of the community as a whole. The vision of the Church shows what investment in our historic downtown can bring and serves as an example for the future. The restoration of the Ladner United Church is most certainly a gift to each and every one of us in the community.

Now — and frankly, for the past couple of weeks — it’s so long, I need several pieces of paper. Make icebox cookies. Order turkey. Get wreath. Hang lights. Write cards. Find stockings. Buy gifts. was in the den and he was in the kitchen, where my list happens to live. “I need you to write something down!” I hollered. “Write down: PAPER BOY!” “Why?” he hollered back. “What’s up with the paper boy?” “I need to get him a gift card!” I yelled. “And if it doesn’t go on my list, I’ll probably forget!” Indeed, that happens — often. The only solution, I have found, is to write what I call “sub-lists,” secondary memos that might reside inside my purse or on my bedside table or in the car, serving as reminders until I can transfer the items to my master list. At this time of year, I probably have eight or 10 lists — the subs, along with the master. Things tend to go on more than they go off, and often when I least expect it. “Oh, my!” I said the other night, bolting upright in bed. “WHAT’S GOING ON?” asked the husband, who’d
been woken from his slumber. “Did you hear something?” “No,” I said. “I just remembered that I need to get more gift tags. Close your eyes because I need to turn on the light to write this on my sub-list.” The husband, it must be noted, does not have a sublist, or even a master list, and tends to become exasperated when the list pops into my head — especially at two in the morning. “Can’t you turn off the light and write that down in the morning?” he complained. “I’ll remind you.” “No, you won’t,” I said. “You’ll forget. That is — you’ll forget unless I make a note to remind myself to remind you to remind me about the gift tags.” He sighed heavily, turned over and pulled his pillow over his head. Don’t worry, I’ve told him several times, this is going to wrap up soon. Things will calm down in just three weeks. Then it’s back to the yogurt and driveway.

Delta council approved a two per cent increase to the municipality’s library budget for 2014 last week. Last Monday night, civic politicians approved paying an additional $72,239 to the Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL), an increase of 2.26 per cent over 2013. It brings Delta’s total for 2014 to $3.26 million. The FVRL establishes an annual budget for the provision of services across 15 municipalities in the region. A funding formula is used to determine how much each municipality pays for library services. Delta comes in at the higher end of the spectrum with only Langley Township ($3.74 million) and Abbotsford ($3.67 million) paying more. The increase to next year’s budget could have been larger without the implementation of a new funding formula, which Delta agreed to earlier this year. In July, civic politicians endorsed the revised formula, which has resulted in a net decrease of 1.5 per cent on Delta’s library budget. It works out to approximately $48,000, in savings that will be phased in over the next couple of years and allocated to enhancing Delta’s

Delta will pay an additional $72,239 to the Fraser Valley Regional Library to run its three branches next year. library services. The formula, called a true usage formula, was established more than 15 years ago. It has gone through several minor revisions over the years, but there were concerns regarding the process, transparency and financial equity. That was evident the last couple of years when Delta council begrudgingly approved increases to its share of the library system. In a report to council last week, Sean McGill, director of human resources and corporate planning, said the revised formula is “more transparent and equitable, and better reflects actual library usage.” The modified formula is

being phased in over two years, so the 2014 assessment is based equally on both the new and old formulas. In a recent customer survey, Delta’s three libraries ended up near the bottom of the pack in terms of usage. Six per cent of respondents said they usually visit the Ladner Pioneer library, while 4.6 per cent said they frequent the Tsawwassen branch the most. The George Mackie Library in North Delta came in just ahead of Ladner at 6.1 per cent. The most popular library was Clearbrook in Abbotsford, which came in at 11.5 per cent. Only the City of Langley and Walnut Grove libraries came in behind Tsawwassen at 4.5 per cent each. The survey of customers and non-users garnered 1,612 responses.

A Ladner girls soccer team is collecting toys for Deltassist this Saturday at the Holly turf field. Members of the U11 Blaze will be at the field from 12 to 5 p.m. to collect new, unwrapped toys that will go to less fortunate families through Deltassist’s Toy Depot Christmas program. “Hopefully we can make Christmas extra special for some families that are in need,” said Alana Brown,
who has a daughter on the team. The event is called Fill the Goal at Holly, she said, noting the team will decorate one of the nets at the field. Donations of food for the South Delta Food Bank will also be accepted. Brown said the team is challenging coaches from other local squads to have their players donate a toy at the event. The Holly turf field is at 4681-62nd St. For more information on the event contact Brown at 604-551-1583.

Ladner United moves Christmas bazaar to Harris Barn this year
Rev. Jim Short shows off some of the themed baskets up for grabs at Ladner United Church’s Christmas Village Bazaar.
GORD GOBLE
Ladner United Church’s Christmas Village Bazaar has a new venue this year — the Harris Barn. Themed baskets (A Taste of Delta is one example) will be set up “front and centre” at the restored barn, notes bazaar co-ordinator Pat Rogers. There will be over 60 baskets in the silent auction. A new feature this year includes guests having the chance to have their pictures taken for free in a “living nativity pageant” outside. Costumes will be provided and the photos will be emailed to the participants.
Also, bricks from Ladner United’s chimney will be available in the silent auction or as a keepsake for $10 each. The church is currently being restored and renovated. Hungry shoppers will be able to get lunch at the event. Baking, preserves and candy will be available too. There will be a free door prize as well. The bazaar will be held Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Harris Barn (on the Kirkland House site), 4140 Arthur Dr., Ladner.
Name: Hans Age: 77 Occupation: Retired What are the activities? Length Swimming and Water Volleyball Where and when does this take place? Ladner Leisure Centre,Tuesday & Thursday from 8:30-10am. How often do you participate? Twice a week. How long have you been involved? Six months. Why did you get involved in this activity? Initially I became involved for a cardio workout after having bypass surgery. What do you like best about this activity? The length swimming is an all-around good workout.Volleyball is really fun. It is a pick-up game with other patrons in the pool. How does it benefit your life? It keeps keep me healthy, and overall I feel better. What other things do you do to keep active? I play Pickleball twice a week and walk the Stanley Park seawall weekly. Did you know that swimming is easy on the joints and uses most of the major muscle groups, as well as offering a good cardiovascular workout? Length swimming is offered every day at the Ladner Leisure Centre, with a minimum one lane available. If you are new to length swimming, consider attending during the non-peak times, weekday afternoons from 1-3pm. You can speak with a lifeguard for some helpful advice and tips on how to get started. Or, to swim effectively and get the most out of your swim workouts, sign up for some Red Cross Adult Learn to Swim lessons or Adult Stroke/Workout lessons. If you would like more information on public swim schedules, learn to swim lessons or other activities for Seniors in Delta, visit www.delta.ca or call (604) 952-3000.

Kingdom Harvest Ministries International, a local church’s international ministry, along with Global Emergency Missions Society, shipped a container full of supplies, including blankets, clothing, vitamins, medicine, medical equipment, personal care items and more, to the Philippines last week. The country was rocked by a major typhoon last month that killed thousands. KHMI is the international ministry for Destiny Centre in Tsawwassen. Darcy and Glenda Dubé are pastors there.

Carol ships sail into town this weekend The LBA’s Breakfast with Santa, another Ladner holiday tradition, is set for Saturday at community centre
The carol ships are scheduled to sail into Ladner Harbour to continue a holiday tradition this weekend. The festively-decorated boats will set sail this Friday and Saturday, however, this year’s event has a new twist.
With the annual tree lighting having already taken place at last week’s inaugural Christmas Tree Festival, the Ladner Gospel Assembly choir will kick off the first carol ships night with a Christmas carol sing-a-long at the tree at the corner of 48th Avenue and
Delta Street before proceeding along Delta Street on their hay wagon to the harbour for the arrival of the carol ships. The sing-a-long will start at 7 p.m. on Friday and last about half an hour. It will include special guests The Suspenders and a country

The finishing touches are being put on the South Fraser Perimeter Road, the new billion-dollar highway that runs from Deltaport Way to 176th Street in Surrey. The 40-kilometre, four-lane route will have
connections to highways 1, 15, 17A, 91 and 99 and the Golden Ears Bridge. The SFPR is slated to open by the end of the year. The Optimist asked:
Are you looking forward to the SFPR opening?
Jako Krushnisky I think it will improve access across the Lower Mainland to where there hasn’t been access to that degree before.
Wayne Austin I’m looking forward to it, but I would like to have more information on how it’s going to affect the Ladner community.
Lowell Holland Yes, finally. I hope it works out and takes the traffic off the Ladner, Tsawwassen route.
You can have your say on this issue by taking part in our web poll at www. delta-optimist.com
Christy Thompson No, I’m not. It’s gone right through agricultural land. It’s right in my back yard now. So, I’m going to hear it. My view, what used to be Mt. Baker and now I see a big sign.
Roger Bain Yes. Get the traffic off 17A.
Last week we asked you:
Are you concerned about the radio towers? • 54 per cent said yes, quite a bit. • 12 per cent said I’m somewhat
concerned. • 34 per cent said not at all.

Sun Devils repeat as B.C. champions Senior girls volleyball team overcomes semi-final scare from South Kamloops to cap outstanding season in style South Delta’s road to victory
MARK BOOTH
With their championship hopes suddenly in serious jeopardy, it was time for two of the most dominant players in the history of South Delta secondary athletics to take over. Nicole and Megan McNamara did just that. The Sun Devils rallied from a 2-1 semi-final deficit to put away a pesky team from South Kamloops and go on to capture their second straight B.C. girls AAAA volleyball championship. The Grade 11 twins have now been part of provincial winning teams for three straight years at SDSS (a junior banner in 2011) and will have an excellent opportunity to close out their decorated high school careers with a third senior title in 2014. “They basically took their games to an extra level they have over anyone else in the province,” said South Delta head coach Dan Burgess of his UCLAbound beach volleyball standouts. “They have been in so many big pressure packed games before and know how to rise to the occasion. “That semi-final match was the real crucial moment for us. It seemed like we were playing through mud, starting with a shorter warm-up than what we were used to, and a lot was working against us. We found a way to pull it out.” Even with the McNamara’s brilliance, this was a deeper Sun Devils team than the 2012 edition that overcame a tough draw to get the job done. The tournament’s No. 1 seed had to take out the No. 2, 3 and 5 teams in order to win the championship after round-robin play didn’t go to form. The run was com-

Kam game with a different lineup than we did the Earl Marriott game,” noted Burgess. “The 12 players on this team had more depth
than ever, both in skill and character.” After a perfect run in preliminary play, the Devils made short work of North
Peace (3-0) in round of 16 play. That’s when the draw got interesting. No. 2 seed and Fraser Valley runnerup Riverside was upset in pool-play by Handsworth, resulting in an earlier than expected meeting with South Delta. What had the potential to be a dramatic quarter-final proved to be a lopsided affair as the Devils picked up where they left of from their decisive performance in the Valley final. “I think we got into their heads a bit,” continued Burgess. “I told their coaches afterwards we knew they were a better team than how they played. They have a lot of young players and it was a learning experience for

them.” With the exception of a round-robin loss at the Trinity Western University tournament back in October, the Sun Devils had dominated Earl Marriott heading into the gold medal match. However, the South Surrey school had elevated its game to reach the final and took the opening set. “We definitely had a lot of familiarity with them but some coaches that had watch them play said they were playing their best defence of the season,” added Burgess. “We tweaked some things with our line-up after the first game that changed the momentum and the girls kept it going from there.”

What was accomplished by South Delta secondary athletic teams this fall will seem even more impressive a decade from now. The senior girls volleyball team’s provincial triumph in Penticton last weekend capped an outstanding fall season that saw three teams contending for championships. The football Sun Devils bowed out in the semi-finals, while the field hockey squad reached the gold medal game before falling to defending champion Handsworth. It was almost unthinkable years earlier to suggest the talent level among senior age girls at the Tsawwassen school was deep enough for two teams to reach the championship game of their respective sports at the same time of the year. It wasn’t long ago, SDSS senior girls volleyball coach Dan Burgess was searching high and low just to come up with enough players to put a team on the floor. “This is definitely a golden era at our school right now,” said Burgess. “It’s something we are going to be looking back at years from now and realize just how spe-

cial it was.” Thanks to a dedicated outside coach in Neil McLennan and the club program offered by the Delta Falcons, the field hockey team will continue to be a regular participant at provincial tournaments. With seven players expected to return next season, including dynamic Grade 11 twins Megan and Nicole McNamara, the Sun Devils should be in position to take a serious run at winning three straight B.C. AAAA volleyball championships. Beyond 2014, South Delta will likely take a step back but not to the dark days of Burgess’ earlier years at the school. “The interesting thing is the program has been building each year since we won the junior provincials (three years ago),” he said. “The success is drawing more girls to volleyball. “The Grade 8s coming into the school are realizing what it takes to be successful. “They are doing (Richmond Olympic) Oval (development) program and playing on club teams. So instead of having 10 girls show up for tryouts and all make the team, 20 are coming out and over half play club volleyball.”

First place Ice Hawks add experience & size BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
No one will accuse the Delta Ice Hawks of sitting on their laurels. While the team currently enjoys a six-point cushion atop the Pacific International Junior Hockey League, general manager Peter Zerbinos has been busy completing two trades and signing another player. The club acquired 20year-old forward Jackson
Beavis from the Grandview Steelers on Sunday night for future considerations. The deal came a day after the Hawks picked-up Mission City Outlaws captain Dakota Klassen for Karsten Seidel in a swap of blueliners. They also welcomed back local product Jeremy Gossard. All three transactions were about adding experience and more size to a young hockey team that will be attempting to hold off the second place Richmond
Sockeyes and the muchimproved North Vancouver Wolf Pack over the final half of the season. The key to Delta’s success so far has been exceptional play in their own end, led by goaltenders Alex Anhert and Scott Lapp. “All three bring the ability to step right into our system and that was very important,” explained Zerbinos. “We’re very proud of our record to date and how we have adapted to a different style after being basically a run and gun team

the past couple of seasons. We feel we have the two best goalies in the league and the guys take a lot of pride in our goals against average being what it is. “We actually asked Scott at the start of the season if he wanted to be traded to another team to get more playing time but he made it clear he wanted to be here and help this team win a championship.” Beavis had eight points, including four goals, with the Steelers this season but it’s the Richmond native’s

grit and strong two-way play that attracted interest from the Ice Hawks. At 6-foot-2 and 195pounds, Klassen brings leadership and a physical presence to the Delta blueline. The 19-year-old can also play the point on the power play with a couple of goals to his credit. Seidel, 17, had seven points in 24 games after being a regular call-up with the team last season. “It was really tough letting him go,” said Zerbinos of Seidel. “It was important for us to get a little stronger
