The next step in the odyssey that is the Southlands development process begins later this week.

On Friday, the Metro Vancouver regional planning and agriculture committee will hear from representatives from the Corporation of Delta and Century Group, as well as local residents, on the municipality’s application to amend the regional growth strategy.

After receiving conditional approval from Delta council last fall, it will now be up to the Metro Vancouver board of directors to say whether the contentious development gets the go ahead.

Century Group is proposing to build 950 housing units on 20 per cent of the 214-hectare (537-acre) Tsawwassen property.

The remaining 80 per cent would be given to Delta, much of it for farming.

The Southlands is zoned agricultural and is also designated agricultural under the Official Community Plan and area plan as well as the Metro Vancouver growth strategy. Any change in regional designation would require a two-thirds weighted vote by the board of directors.

After the regional committee hears from speakers on Friday, it is expected to make a recommendation to the Metro board. If the bylaw receives preliminary approval from the board, a date will be set for a public hearing.

Before the committee considers the application, George Harvie, Delta’s chief administrative officer, civic planning director Jeff Day and planner Marcy Sangret will give a presentation. Century Group president Sean Hodgins is also scheduled to address the committee as well as several residents opposed to the application.

The meeting starts at 9 a.m. at the Metro Vancouver office in Burnaby.

Delta police issued a warning this week after reports of a phone scam surfaced in the community.

Since last Friday, the department has received several reports of attempted fraud where a suspect has phoned a potential victim and pretended to be a police offi-

cer in an attempt to obtain money in exchange for the dismissal of an alleged arrest warrant.

In this version of the scam, a caller tells the potential victim they have outstanding warrants for an unpaid debt, missed jury duty or some other minor offence, and that a fine is due.

As unionized truckers issued a 72-hour strike notice, Port Metro Vancouver has agreed to a proposal to deal with concerns raised by drivers.

Last Wednesday, more than 1,000 non-unionized container truck drivers parked their rigs to protest long wait times and low rates at Port Metro Vancouver ports, including Deltaport.

Protests began Wednesday morning at the gates of Vanterm facility near downtown Vancouver and at a truck pullout along Highway 91 just north of Highway 10.

The truckers insist their rigs won’t budge until the port meets a series of demands, including resolution of the ongoing issues of rates and delays.

On Saturday, citing a lack of progress at the bargaining table, members of Unifor-Vancouver Container Truckers’ Association (VCTA) voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking strike action and on Monday the union issued its strike notice.

“We’ve attempted to settle this disagreement at the bargaining table and in discussions with government,” said Paul Johal, president of Unifor-VCTA. “But without any progress on improving rates, dealing with undercutting, and fixing growing line-ups at the ports, we have no choice but to take

On Monday, Port Metro Vancouver agreed in principle to a proposal provided by the B.C. Trucking Association and the shipping industry to deal with some of the issues. The proposal includes extending operating hours, changes to how fees are charged and conducting audits of trucking companies.

It is now being circulated by trucking company owners throughout the owner/ operator trucking community.

The union’s collective agreement expired in June 2012. Since that time, the union has raised concerns that long line-ups and wait times at ports are costing truck drivers. Unifor-VCTA is demanding increased

rates of pay and wants the rates standardized and enforced across the sector to put an end to under-cutting.

The work stoppage has already had a significant impact on operations at the ports. Port Metro Vancouver spokesperson Caroline Price said the ports are seeing only about 15 per cent of their usual volume.

Mayor Lois Jackson says the province’s move to extend municipal council terms from three to four years is a good one, but it’s not clear whether she plans to be a part of the next edition of Delta council.

First elected as an alderman in 1972 and mayor since 1999, Jackson was asked for her take on the provincial government’s announcement last week that the current legisla-

tive session will seek to switch civic elections from three-year to four-year cycles, starting with this November’s vote.

The longer terms would also apply to school boards.

It had been a hotly contested issue over the years with smaller B.C. communities resisting the longer terms, but last year the Union of British Columbia Municipalities passed a resolution supporting an extension.

Some cellular customers could soon start experiencing better reception in Tsawwassen.

Telus crews have been in the community in recent months installing small cell technology aimed at enhancing the company’s wireless capacity.

“There’s a lot of areas where there is really poor coverage,” Doug Anastos, senior real estate manager for Telus, told civic politicians last week.

In order to improve service, the telecommunication’s company is installing two antennas on existing

wooden poles on 56th Street south of 6th Avenue and about 70 micro-cell antennas, which are also installed on existing poles.

Sixty per cent of the new small cell sites are now operational.

Anastos said the poor coverage is not only a frustration to cell phone customers, but also a matter of public safety with 60 per cent of 911 calls being made from cell phones today.

He said Telus introduced the small cell technology last year in an attempt to improve its wireless capacity without having to construct additional large cell towers.

The 70 being installed in Tsawwassen will provide approximately the same coverage as four 15-metre towers.

The small cells are about one square foot each and are attached to existing Telus poles, or shared B.C. Hydro poles. In the future, Telus may also look at installing the cells on exist-

ing civic infrastructure, which would require an agreement with Delta.

The cells require low power consumption, Anastos said, and emit low levels of EMFs. Telus was asked to give a presentation to Delta council on its activities after municipal hall became aware of the work through queries from residents.

Under Industry Canada regulations, initially there was no need for Telus to undertake any public consultation on the small cell installation. However, those regulations recently changed.

A Telus spokesperson said a letter containing information about the work has been distributed to “interested members of the public.”

The response from residents has been positive so far, she said.

“They recognize we are working to improve their wireless service without the need for additional infrastructure.”

Anniversary at English Bluff celebrated with artistic flair BY

English Bluff Elementary’s foyer has a brand new look to help celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.

Artist Jason Craft finished a mural last week that covers the foyer’s walls.

“We thought this was just a great year to do it,” said principal Michelle Smith.

Students gave input about what they thought would be important to see in the

mural, she noted.

The artwork depicts outdoors scenes, including the ocean, beach, Fred Gingell Park and soaring eagles.

“We’re pretty excited about it,” said Smith.

The art includes the saying “Be kind, be safe, be fair” written onto a log. It’s a code of conduct at the school.

The finished mural is “amazing,” said Grade 5 student Ryan Hope. He added that he liked the amount of detail put into

the artwork.

“I like how it’s like you’re on land and you’re looking up at sky and the eagles,” said Kate Finlay, also in Grade 5.

The school is celebrating its anniversary with a carnival on Friday, May 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be a throwback theme, including games like sack races.

The Tsawwassen elementary school opened on March 4, 1964. It currently has about 200 students and around 25 staff.

The Reach Child and Youth Development Foundation held its second annual Reach for the Stars fundraising gala at Harris Barn in Ladner Saturday night. The event featured entertainment and speakers, live and silent auctions, square dancers, a barbecue buffet dinner and more. Proceeds from the event will go toward Reach’s Building for Children Together $4 million capital campaign to build a centre in Ladner for children and youth with special needs. So far, Reach has raised $1.3 million.

The event, which will run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., will support Dress for Success’ efforts to empower women to look and feel their best. Dress for Success Vancouver promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and life.

Each Dress for Success client receives a suit for her interviews and a small working wardrobe when she gets her job. The suits given to clients symbolize the faith that Dress for Success has in every woman’s ability to succeed.

Individuals are asked to donate clean, gently worn women’s clothing, purses and shoes that are suitable for job interviews and work environments. Dress for Success has an increased need for purses and handbags that are suitable for the office environment.

Each individual who donates items will receive a thank you gift from South Coast Casuals and be entered in a draw for a $150 South Coast Casuals gift certificate.

MURPHY’S LAW For as long as most people can remember, federal elections in these parts have been over before the campaigning even gets underway, a situation that could change as soon as next year.

Various incarnations of right-of-centre parties have ruled here for more than three decades, most often with a veritable stranglehold on the riding.

Former Conservative cabinet minister Tom Siddon cruised to re-election in 1984 with a 20,000-vote margin while the popular John Cummins, one of the original Reformers, held sway for almost 20 years. Current Tory MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay carried on the tradition in 2011 by capturing 54 per cent of the popular vote, a whopping 15,000 votes clear of her closest pursuer.

With another federal election set for next year, that right-of-centre dominance will face its sternest test in a long time thanks to a redrawing of Canada’s electoral map and a changing of the political landscape across the country.

Rather than being grouped with the overflow in Richmond, Ladner and Tsawwassen will join North Delta to create the federal riding of Delta, only the second time the municipality will be a constituency of its own. The new map means dropping right wing Richmond and replacing it with a much more middle-of-the-road North Delta, which has been represented by all three major parties over the last decade, including the NDP at the moment.

With a second place showing in Delta-Richmond East and a victory in Newton-North Delta last time, the New Democrats must be welcoming the realignment, but I suspect it will be the Liberals who benefit most.

An afterthought with many federal voters thanks to a couple of underwhelming leadership choices in recent years, the Grits are well positioned this time around with charismatic Justin Trudeau now at the helm.

Throw in a looming expiration date for a Stephen Harper government rocked by scandals, Senate and otherwise, and it appears Trudeau’s Liberals are poised to make huge inroads. Couple that with a strong local candidate, somebody like Bruce McDonald, the longtime civic councillor who is also vice-president of the Liberal constituency association, and you’ve got the makings of a horse race in the brand new riding.

I’m not so sure all of it would have been enough had the electoral map stayed status quo, but the new landscape means a federal election campaign will, for the first time in decades, get underway without a winner already having been chosen.

COMMUNITY COMMENT I confess: I’m an Olympic junkie. Attach those five rings to any sport and I’ll watch it.

I also suffer from the occasional bout of insomnia. A brief interruption of my sleep in the middle of the night sometimes sets my mind off thinking about stuff, and I can’t get back to sleep.

Both of these syndromes clashed for two weeks in February.

I usually rely on a menu of get rich quick through real estate, exercise equipment that makes fat melt away and miracle cleaning device infomercials to help me doze off.

But with a 12-hour time difference between here and Sochi, I was welcomed by a steady diet of curling, alpine skiing, biathlon, luge and, of course, hockey.

I didn’t get much sleep, but boy, it was worth it.

There are few opportunities for Canada to stand out on the world

stage. I don’t know how many viral photos I’ve seen where our prime minister is on the edge of a G20 photo, if we are recognized at all.

Sure, some people think we live in igloos, play hockey 24 hours a day and live on maple syrup. But slowly, that’s changing — Canada is becoming cool.

How did we suddenly find this new notoriety? Did the world wake up one morning with the revelation that the Great White North was now a different place than they thought?

Our governments spend millions attracting tourists to our country — a huge industry employing thousands of people. They encourage businesses to set up operations here. We’ve even brought TED to Vancouver. We must be doing something right.

I’ve got a friend that says if you have to tell someone you’re cool, you’re not. It has to come from your actions, how you handle yourself and how others perceive you.

The Olympics is an opportunity to show what we are made of. Every time we won a medal, it shined a light on our country, and it’s those collective lights that help shape how others feel about us.

We played fair, we competed hard.

I think the real stories that define us were Alex Bilodeau’s second win in moguls, and how much his brother Frederic, who suffers from cerebral palsy, inspires him. Or how Gilmore Junio gave his only Olympic opportunity to Denny Morrison who went on to win silver in speed skating.

I think the most Canadian moment was Justin Wadsworth, a Canadian ski coach, running onto the cross-country course to give Russian skier Anton Gafarov a replacement ski after his had broken and he just wanted to finish the race in front of the home crowd.

Actions like that define us. Actions like that make Canada cool.

So the next time you travel outside North America and someone tells you to wear a Canadian flag because people like Canadians, remember Justin, Alex, Gilmore and all of our Olympians, not for the big things they have done, but for the little things that make our flag the symbol it is, and the respect you receive because of it.

The Olympics alone don’t define us, but I think it’s a big part of our story. And worth every nickel we invest to support it.

including income taxes, consumption taxes, property taxes, health care premiums and payroll taxes. B.C. also has the lowest provincial personal income taxes in Canada for those earning up to $121,000 a year.

Provincial personal income taxes for most taxpayers have been reduced by 37 per cent or more since 2001, and today an additional 400,000 people no longer pay any B.C. income tax.

While we have increased MSP premiums to help support the additional $2.5 billion to the Ministry of Health budget over the next three years, we have also enhanced MSP premium

assistance so that people who receive it pay less than they did in 2009. Overall, 800,000 British Columbians pay no premiums and another 200,000 are subsidized.

For example, a senior couple earning equal pension income of $15,000, for a total family income of $30,000, would pay no personal income tax, no health care premiums and could receive more back from the low-income carbon tax rebate than they pay in carbon tax. Overall, this couple would pay lower taxes in B.C. than in any other province except Alberta.

Editor: Re: Driver’s near-miss prompts plea to slow dump tracks, letter to the editor, Feb. 26 Our company, Mainland Sand & Gravel Ltd., is the supplier of the aggregate and river sand for the Tsawwassen Mills project and as such also responsible for the hiring of the trucks carrying the products to the work site.

After 44 years in business, we are well aware how difficult it can be for local residents when a construction site is in full swing and truck transportation is being employed to move materials to the site. With a project of this magnitude, multiple stakeholders have to be taken into consideration when planning deliveries and at this early stage one of the most critical areas is the management of the trucking program.

Prior to this project starting our company and the project managers for the construction company discussed at length how we could ensure the maximum level of safe practices by truckers both on and to/ from the site. Our first step was to hold a meeting with all truck owners/operators.

Along with the site construction project managers, we emphasised how important it was for trucks to obey the rules of the road and to follow the site-specific rules when entering, unloading and departing

the site. To drive this point home, we circulated a onepage set of instructions that each truck driver/owner had to read and then sign/return.

On this sheet were the steps we would take if infringements occurred.

We adopted a three-strike policy; after two written warnings if a third infraction occurred an individual would be permanently dismissed from the project.

The project went through a construction lull for a portion of last summer.

Just prior to the restart date, we held a second meeting to reconfirm to all the safety rules had not changed. To date there have been approximately 53,000 truck trips to/from the site but Dahna Allison’s letter clearly shows that for some of the truck operators the message is not clear.

We have scheduled a further meeting with all the truck owner/operators and Allison’s letter will be the focus of the meeting.

Our work will continue for a good portion of this

year and as with any other health and safety matter, the goal for trucks is zero incidents. It is the intent of this next meeting to firmly re-emphasis this point.

On behalf of our company and the construction company, I sincerely apologize to Allison for the scare she recently experienced as two of the trucks ran the red light. This type of action is simply not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

Our system to punish offenders is a three-step program, however, both ourselves and the construction company project managers have the right to move immediately to step three if the offence warrants such a move. We have employed this action in the past and will continue to do so when required.

What Allison experienced would lead to these two drivers being immediately removed from the project.

Public demanded thorough review

Editor: Re: Delta adds insult to injury by handing taxpayers bill, letter to the editor, Feb. 26 I think there’s more than one perspective on what Peter Malim refers to as “Delta residents” having “had to foot the bill” to pay for all the activities involving the Century Group proposal to develop the Southlands.

Attaching blame for what Malim seems to regard as some sort of travesty to Delta council kind of ignores his and his friends — and all of our, really — role(s) in this whole affair.

From watching (and participating in) the various proceedings, it became evident that a significant and focused groundswell of support for what Century plans for this property arose, awakened from a long and suppressed slumber.

Too much negativity all of the time, people said.

Let’s get on with things. We really like what this proposed development offers our community — and it

doesn’t “take” anything.

Let’s look at the positives.

The costs of trying to come to a decision on a matter like this arise out of the way(s) we choose to discuss the matter with each other. Those costs are not entirely predictable and we have to recognize our own contributions to these costs.

We didn’t all have to speak at the various public hearings, for example.

Many of us simply continued to say, when we did speak, what had been said many, many times before.

Council heard and we all heard. Alleging that somehow the costs of dealing with Century Group’s proposal are in some way unfair to the community is really a mug’s game. We demanded the process and we pay the costs.

Suggesting, as one letter writer did, that a public enquiry should be called to look into the matter can only be described as silly.

Time to move on and support “our” development at Metro.

Ideals depend on each other Editor: Re: It’s imperative not to confuse capitalism with democracy, letter to the editor, Feb. 28 For capitalism to succeed, democracy is a necessary ingredient; for democracy to succeed, capitalism is a prime component.

Democracy: a system of government by the whole population, usually through elected representatives; capitalism: an economic system in which the production and distribution of goods depends on invested private capital and profit-making. [Definitions from the Oxford Reference English Dictionary.]

It would appear that in the Southlands situation,

elected representatives — duly elected by the “whole population” — permitted, under the democracy that we enjoy, capitalism to further the “economic system” through “invested private capital.”

Similar things are alike things and thus, capitalism flourishes under democracy and both are significant in Canada where each depends on the other. It is difficult to separate one from the other and retain the benefits of each.

As to whether the “costs for the Southlands application” will be paid for “primarily by the people of Delta” and are an “insult” is not for me to comment.

Taxpayer would like proof of workload Editor: Re: Municipal politicians vote themselves modest salary increases, Feb. 26 When Delta council members give themselves a raise in pay they often use the term heavier workload than their counterparts in other municipalities. This may or may not be true, so why don’t we have council prove it.

Council members should give us an accounting of

all the meetings they attend that pertain strictly to Delta’s best interests, leaving out the ones they attend to better their own image for election time.

The one report I would be most interested in is how many council meetings there were last year and how many of those did the mayor actually attend.

Looking for special way to celebrate extra hour

LIVING MATTERS Here it comes: one of my favourite days of the year.

OK, so it doesn’t rank up there with Christmas or my birthday or the first day of my summer holidays. But the day when the clocks spring forward is among the very best.

Sure, you lose an hour of sleep, but that’s a small price to pay for the prize at the end of the day: an extra hour of sunlight.

I have no idea who came up with the idea to fiddle with the clock, but I suspect it was someone who was sick to death of jogging after dinner in the dark.

Either that, or a golfer who could only tee off at 3 p.m., and wanted to get in the full 18 holes.

No matter. Whoever it was it was brilliant.

“Tomorrow,” I reminded the husband, “it will be light an hour later. We should do something to celebrate.”

“Oh,” he said. “Like what?”

“Well,” I thought, “we still haven’t cleaned up after that last wind storm. We could do some yard work.”

“That doesn’t sound like much of a celebration,” observed the husband.

He was right.

“OK,” I said. “Maybe we could wash the car?”

“Too cold,” said the husband. “Also not very celebratory.”

Again, he was right.

“Maybe we should just go for a walk around the block,” I suggested.

“A little better,” said the husband. “But still just the slightest bit dull.”

I guess he was right: a stroll around the neighbourhood did not exactly scream

celebration.

We considered the options, but continued to come up short. I suggested we do some bird-watching, but the husband reminded me we wouldn’t know a puffin from a parakeet. The husband suggested we play tennis, but I reminded him we only had one racket.

We considered doing some beachcombing — given that we’d actually be able to see what was on the sand — but then remembered this is a pastime we favour in July. You know, when the sand is hot and the feet are in flip flops.

“OK,” I said. “So it’s not exactly summer. It’s March.

It won’t be short-and-Tshirt weather. But still, we have to celebrate the added hour.”

This Sunday, we’ll observe the added hour of light by doing something crazy. It doesn’t matter what, as long as we have the sunglasses on.

I see that you have a Coaches Corner area on your website. When and why did you start coaching? Is this part of your retail business? I completed my first coaching course 8 years ago and I began business coaching at that time. I've always been drawn to coaching/counselling and one of my favourite parts of my job has always been working with my staff to help them find more fulfillment, joy, balance and success not just in their job but in their life. A few years ago I found myself frustrated because I didn't feel I had the time to put into coaching with running two stores and I knew I wanted to work more deeply with clients rather than just focusing on spreadsheets and marketing plans. I stumbled along another course that I'll be completing this month and it has taken my coaching career to another level. This past year I decided to close my Kits store to allow more time for me to pursue this avenue. I would say it is part of my retail business as I have tried to incorporate it into the culture of The Urban Rack (thru things like Coaches Corner). I believe we are far more than a clothing store...our purpose is to "inspire women to discover and embrace their unique beauty".

What is your long term goal with your business? Has this changed over the years?

Hmm, good question. I have recently taken to not setting long term goals. I know that goes against everything we have ever learned but I started to feel like I would set goals and then life would get in the way. Stuff would happen and I would have to change course again and again until I forgot what my original goal was. Now I have visions and dreams...way more fun. So, I guess the answer is I see myself being in the business of making a difference in people's lives and if I can incorporate that with fashion, food, wine, and friends...I'm golden. So, that might mean expanding The Urban Rack again but at this point it feels right to have one store in a community I love and growing my coaching business thru individual coaching and running workshops.

If you could give a word of advice to other Entrepreneurs out there, what would it be? Know your "team" and ignore the others. Our "team" are the people in our lives that just get it. They don't blindly support us ("yes darling, open up that cute little book/cd store, such a great idea!") but they encourage us and they don't try to squash our dreams because of their own fears. Family especially can be tricky as their fears are often coming from a good place, they don't want us to lose our shirt. So, look elsewhere for like-minded people to share your ideas with. And finally, remember that to be an entrepreneur we need courage and passion but mainly we need to be willing to fail.

In 2002 Nav Dhaliwal attended Blanche MacDonald for aesthetics with the dream of one day opening her own salon. Ten years later her dream came true after working in the industry in a variety of areas.

This self-described “huge Canucks fan” took over the Assistant Manager position eight months ago and has been with Thrifty Foods for seven years. Kathleen earned a Bachelor of Business Administration with distinction and is secretary on the board of directors for the Tsawwassen Tennis Club. As well, she won the David L. McMillan and Sobey’s Future Leader Scholarship Award ($10,000) and was the inaugural recipient for Thrifty Foods.

A busy, active mom, Michelle started with Thrifty Foods on the Island and moved to Tsawwassen to help open that store in 2001.

After starting out here career with the company as a cashier, Michelle has spent the last decade focusing on keeping things organized.

An organizer through and through, she is the one the managers rely on to make sure their paperwork is up to date and that all the t’s are crossed and i’s dotted. Michelle also organizes pre-school and kindergarten tours of the stores; and she is also in charge of the school-lunch program, which supplies the elementary schools in Ladner and Tsawwassen with milk, juice, fruit, veggies and everything needed for those special lunch days.

“Although some of my work days start at 2 a.m., I love the feeling of accomplishment that I get from completing all my many ‘projects’ each and every day that I work,” she says.

When she’s not at the store, Michelle can usually be found jogging around South Delta with her black lab at her side and her son leading the way on his bike.

Rotarian Shari Merritt has been having great fun collecting money and bottles of wine from around the world.

Merritt will soon see the results from her efforts turned into a spectacular 70-bottle wall of wine. That display will be the backdrop for An Evening of Wine and Roses, the seventh annual Rotary Wine Gala on Saturday, March 8 at the Beach Grove Golf Club.

This year features another first, tastings of both Old World and award-winning New World wines. Experts in attendance will represent 12 wineries and up to 72 wines.

An unending parade of gourmet hors d’oeuvres prepared by award-winning chef Froilan Alejo will complement the nectars, as

will an array of “to die for” chocolate samplings.

The evening will also feature silent and live auctions with items ranging from modest to fabulous.

Professional auctioneer, and Delta councillor, Ian Paton will auction off the wall of wine as well as a variety of other items, including a catered private dinner party prepared by TV chef Wes Levesque of Urban Village Catering.

Proceeds from the evening support Rotary projects both in the community and abroad.

WANT TO CURL LIKE A Rotary celebrates GOLD MEDAL OLYMPIAN? Indian milestone South Delta Rotarians celebrated the official eradication of polio from India with a special celebration.

Sixty-three members and guests from Tsawwassen Rotary, including members of the Interact Club of South Delta Secondary, took part in the Meal to End Polio, a traditional Indian breakfast held at KinVillage.

The fare was courtesy of Connaught Place Restaurant, a well-known local source of outstanding Indian cuisine. When restaurant owners Sukmvir Singh Bansal and his wife Satbir Kaur Bansal learned of the eradication of polio in their homeland, they offered the meal as celebration.

“The youth and citizens of South Delta actively joined people everywhere to achieve this excellent result,” said John Charbonneau, organizer of the Meal to End Polio.

“Without pause, our efforts and this powerful partnership will continue until we immunize children everywhere from this crippling disease.”

The billion people of India reached this critical milestone by being polio free for three years, leaving just Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria as countries yet to achieve such status.

With the meal generously provided by the Bansal family and Connaught Place Restaurant, Rotarians contributed the normal cost of their breakfast to the ongoing battle to defeat polio. The Gates Foundation and Rotary International matched the contribution with grants that will ensure another 5,355 children don’t contract the disease.

“This campaign has been remarkable in connecting the youth of South Delta with those of India,” said Rotary district governor Garry Shearer.

The Ask An Investment Advisor series at Delta’s public libraries continues with three more free programs, including one tonight in North Delta.

In Keep Records for Investment, certified general accountant Eileen Reppenhagen will encourage people to be responsible, take charge, make informed decisions, protect their net worth and pay less tax.

The session takes place tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the George Mackie Library. Reppenhagen strongly believes that if you monitor your net worth, it will grow.

Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture’s first-ever Delta Idol winners were crowned last Friday at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

In the younger age category (10 to 13), Connor Nelson took first with his rendition of Human.

Hannah Brandon was second and Marika Lyszczyk was third.

In the older age category (14 to 18), Raegan Ghegan sang Mama’s Broken Heart to win while Zoe Evans took second and Laurel Mitzel was third.

Over 100 people came out to watch the event, said Jacqueline Hamlin, recreation programmer at the arts centre.

“It was a great turnout,” she said.

“The crowd was very supportive and all the kids

did really well.”

Finalists got to sing one song and received feedback from a panel of judges.

Because of the calibre of the singing, choosing winners was very difficult, said Carroll Lefebvre, one of the judges.

“I sincerely hope that all the contestants continue to follow their dreams and keep on singing. They are all great singers,” said Lefebvre.

Madison Gillette performed Friday at Delta Idol.

The proposed Westham Island Canoe Pass Tidal Marsh Project involves the creation of intertidal marsh habitat for fish and wildlife. The proposed project is located on the south-east shore of Westham Island, in Canoe Passage, in the Corporation of Delta.

Port Metro Vancouver is proposing the project: improve fish and wildlife habitat by expanding the existing marsh area and • toconverting un-vegetated area into ecologically productive brackish marsh; to increase the productivity of Canoe Passage and provide high quality habitat at • a prime location for juvenile salmon and other fish, birds and wildlife.

As part of this public engagement, Port Metro Vancouver will present information regarding the tidal marsh project, and will seek input regarding opportunities for educational and interpretive project features.

Whether it was in the north or south, home ice proved be no advantage for the Delta Ice Hawks.

A 4-3 game six loss to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack Sunday night ended the Ice Hawks’ season. They failed to win any of their home games in the best-ofseven series — first falling in the opener at the Ladner Leisure Centre before heading to their temporary home at Sungod Arena where they dropped two more.

Delta showed plenty of resiliency in the elimination game — three times battling back to tie game but its reputation and some costly miscues proved to be too much.

Twice, the league’s most penalized team in the regular season had to kill off lengthy two-man advantages. Then when it appeared Tanner Gattinger was hooked from behind on partial breakaway late in the third period, it was missed by both referees.

Adding more offensive depth will be high on his off-season priority list as this team struggled to score.

“We need more goal scoring on a consistent

basis,” he added. “I think we have enough character guys but you also need guys who can put the puck in the net. “You could see things starting to click for us at the end systems wise but we just couldn’t bury the puck.”

U18 Wild finish 3rd in high school hockey playoffs The Wild then secured third place with a 7-4 win over Kelowna’s Pursuit of Excellence on Sunday.

Former South Delta Minor Hockey product Beck Malenstyn helped Okanagan Hockey Academy capture the Prep Division championship with a 3-2 win over Edge.

The first round pick of the Calgary Pitmen in last spring’s WHL Bantam Draft was among the Okanagan goal scorers.

Cavin Tisley is another SDMHA grad who has spent the season in the Interior playing for the Pursuit of Excellence’s U15 squad. He was the team’s top scorer in the playoff tourney with eight points in three games as Pursuit fell 4-2 to Yale in the championship game.

Delta U18 Wild’s bid for Canadian Sport School Hockey League championship ended in a semi-final shootout loss last weekend in Vernon.

The U18 Wild were edged 4-3 by the Calgary-based Edge School for Prep Athletes, ending a solid season for the South Delta Secondary Hockey Academy team. The Wild rode the terrific goaltending performance of Jake Morrisey to a late third period lead when the Edge pulled even with 4:51 remaining. Morrisey finished the afternoon with 51 saves as Delta was outshot 54-34.

The Edge converted both its shootout attempts while Delta failed to convert its two chances. Jake Fletcher, Colin Grannary and Tyler Fyfe scored in regulation time.

The most productive week of Logan Schuss’ brief career in the National Lacrosse League has earned him recognition.

The Ladner native was named NLL second star of the week after producing 13 points in two games for the Minnesota Swarm.

Schuss had a goal and five assists in a 14-12 loss to the Toronto Rock, then scored five goals, including a natural hat trick in the fourth quarter, to lead the way in a 15-14 comeback win over the Philadelphia Wings.

The 2013 No. 1 overall draft pick scored 13 seconds into the final frame, before adding two more goals to complete the hat trick in a 1:46 span.

“It’s all about what (coach Joe Sullivan) has been talking to us about: having faith in each other,” said the former Delta Islanders junior ‘A’ standout.
