Century Group headed for Surrey Development company based in Tsawwassen for more than half a century set to leave early next year BY

Real estate development company Century Group, a longtime fixture in Tsawwassen, has announced it will relocate its head office to Surrey City Centre in January.

Century Group’s new offices will be located at Central City adjacent to SFU Surrey, City Centre Library and the newlyopened city hall, the company said in a news release last week.

Hodgins called the move to the heart of Surrey’s downtown an important step for the company in order to better meet the needs of staff and business partners.

“It will be transformative to our corporate culture to relocate to rapid transit,” he explained.

“The new location will position the company for future business as well as improve recruitment and shorten commute times for employees.”

Century is behind the Civic Plaza project in Surrey. When completed in late 2016, the high-

rise tower will include a hotel, university campus and residential units.

The company has long been part of the fabric of South Delta since the late George Hodgins, Sean’s father, founded it more than half a century ago.

Who’s in the race so far

The ballot for next month’s municipal election is beginning to take shape as candidates continue to file their nomination papers in advance of Friday’s deadline.

As of yesterday at noon, 14 candidates had either publicly declared or had filed their papers at municipal hall to seek one of six seats on Delta council, while nine individuals had either declared or filed in the race for seven Delta school board positions.

Five-term incumbent Lois Jackson is the lone declared candidate for mayor at this point.

Among the latest to enter the race for school board are incumbents Val Windsor and Nick Kanakos, both of whom are finishing up their first term as trustees, as well as Brad Sherwin, who is hoping to land a seat for the first time.

Windsor, a former teacher and former president of the Delta Teachers’ Association, is vice-chair of the current board. She said it’s important for trustees to have an understanding of their school district in order for them to be effective advocates for students.

Windsor said she is pleased that trustees are finally speaking with a united voice about the need for a fully funded public education system. However, she is still concerned with the downloading of extra costs to school districts by the provincial government.

Kanakos, whose wife Jeannie is seeking re-election to Delta council, said he has dedicated his life to working with parents to deliver quality education.

“My lifelong commitment has been to provide the best quality education for the students of Delta. I will continue to work with the parents, teachers and support staff to ensure a quality learning experience in Delta,” he stated.

Kanakos will be running with a team called Independents Working for

You, which includes his wife as well as incumbent councillor Bruce McDonald and school board chair Laura Dixon.

Sherwin, who ran in the 2011 election, has been actively working with parents, the board and the district to try to secure transportation for many students who lost their bussing program due to provincial cuts.

Sherwin is currently the director of marketing for the Credit Counseling Society and has been an active volunteer for community events and groups.

Meanwhile, Johann Ackermann this week announced he is running for council.

Ackermann has been employed at the Canada Revenue Agency for 24 years and has lived in Delta for the last 22 years.

He notes he has spent many hours as a leader and volunteer in the community and his time has been recognized and honoured with the Queen’s 2012 Diamond Jubilee Medal.

He feels that all the communities of Delta deserve to be properly represented and heard, adding a lot of issues affecting the communities are not being given the exposure and discussion they deserve.

He’ll be running with four other independents in a group hoping to make it onto council for the first time.

Staring this year, council and school board terms will increase from three to four years, meaning the next election won’t take place until 2018.

The deadline to file nomination papers for the Nov. 15 election is 4 p.m. Friday.

Fisheries minister pays visit to Ladner Gail Shea talks with local fishermen who enjoyed one of the best sockeye runs in the last 60 years BY

The federal minister of fisheries and oceans made a stop in South Delta last Friday during a tour of B.C.’s fishing industry.

Gail Shea was accompanied by Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay on a visit to Delta Pacific Seafoods before arriving at Ladner Harbour to talk to the Optimist about the big run of sockeye enjoyed by fisherman this year.

In 2010, B.C. had a surprisingly historic run with 30 million sockeye returning to the Fraser River. A near repeat was expected this summer due to the four-year maturity cycle.

Saying the government has made many investments in the industry, Shea said it looks like one of the best seasons for sockeye in 60 years.

“What we’re hearing is people are happy how the season has gone and we’ve made changes, of course, to the integrated Fisheries Management Plan, which was done with a lot of consultation with industry members,” she said.

“We’re a little more flexible to ensure that the maximum benefit went to the industry, while still ensuring we were making all the right decisions on conservation.”

They’re always concerned and brought up to the minister that good monitoring

should remain. This is the second time the minister has come to Delta to have these roundtables to speak directly with commercial fisherman,” Findlay said.

Darin Chung was one of the local fishermen who took advantage of the run,

although he noted the numbers weren’t quite as good as four years ago.

“It would have been if we had a couple of more openings. At the end, the same boats that got to go out took an extra two or three thousand pieces that were supposed to be ours. We got shut down on Sept. 15th,” he said.

The fisheries minister also announced the government will provide $34.2 million over five years to upgrade and renew salmon B.C. hatcheries and spawning channels operated by the federal government under the Salmon Enhancement Program.

The program operates 23 salmon hatcheries and spawning channels that

release hundreds of millions of juvenile salmon every year to supplement wild stocks.

On another front, in anticipation of this year’s huge run, the Corporation of Delta attempted to provide a Steveston-like feel to Ladner Harbour by allowing fresh fish sales off boats at the Elliott Street wharf this summer.

Noting his family had built up a large and loyal clientele but hadn’t been able to sell fish off the docks for over a decade, Chung said his parents and aunt sold their fish at the wharf this summer.

He said business was “OK,” maintaining it will take time to build a customer base.

A Surrey mayoral candidate has called in Delta police Chief Jim Cessford to help devise a plan to tackle crime and public safety concerns in that city.

Coun. Barinder Rasode unveiled the plan last week that would potentially see Surrey take on a policing model similar to what has been done in Delta.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper last week announced that Parks Canada archeologists have been able to identify the long-lost ship discovered last month as the HMS Erebus.

The ship was one of two that belonged to the illfated Franklin Expedition — Royal Navy captain Sir John Franklin’s journey to find the Northwest Passage.

The expedition set out from England in July 1845 and included Erebus and HMS Terror.

The vessels were last seen two months later off the west coast of Greenland when they met two whaling ships before continuing west into the ice of Lancaster Sound. They were

never seen again.

The historic discovery was made early last month. The Victoria Strait Expedition, using a remotely operated underwater vehicle recently acquired

by Parks Canada, found the ship largely intact. At the time there was not enough evidence to identify if it was Erebus or Terror, however, Parks Canada underwater archeologists were able to confirm the identity of the ship following a review of data and artifacts observed from the ocean floor using high-resolution photos, high-definition video and sonar measurements.

Local author and former expedition organizer Anthony Dalton, who lives in Tsawwassen, said the identity of the ship is sig-

nificant because Erebus was Franklin’s flagship.

“I hope the expedition team will find artifacts relating to the 1845 expedition and relating particularly to Franklin,” he said.

Dalton said he is optimistically thinking the team will discover Franklin’s personal journal protected in waterproof material.

Last month, Dalton, who has written 14 non-fiction books, five related to the Arctic and one specifically about Sir John Franklin and the ill-fated mission, called the discovery an incredible achievement.

“It’s great for Canadian history,” he said. “It’s great for British history.”

He said what actually happened to the two ships has remain a mystery over the years.

HUB Cycling launching South Delta committee to improve biking conditions Intensifying development and updates to local highway infrastructure will top the agenda for the new HUB Cycling South Delta Committee, says the group’s interim chair.

Encompassing Tsawwassen, Ladner, and Tsawwassen First Nation, and connections to the ferries and George Massey Tunnel, the South Delta HUB Committee will begin work to help make the area safer and more accessible for cycling when it holds its first meeting tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the Ladner Community Centre.

“The objective for this committee is to give concerned residents a forum to talk about cycling issues and get dialogue happening with decision-makers about safe cycling options, both within and between our communities.

“South Delta residents need reasonable transportation options, especially when transit frequency and bus bike rack capacity is low in suburban areas,” said Thompson. “Cycling is a helpful option, and given the infrastructure changes that are looming in this part

of the region, the time for dialogue is now.”

HUB Cycling is represented across most of Metro Vancouver through eight volunteer committees, which meet monthly to discuss local cycling issues.

Many municipal government staff members consult with HUB committees as part of transportation planning and development processes.

“The cycling community is growing across Metro Vancouver, but not everyone feels they have a voice when it comes time for investments in cycling and active transportation choices,” said Alexander Clarkson, president of the HUB Cycling board.

“South Delta has very specific concerns that aren’t the same as in North Delta, Surrey or White Rock, so we’re opening up the committee to anyone who lives or cycles in that area to join us.”

MURPHY’S LAW I like Delta’s math.

There are six fire halls in this municipality but just two ambulance stations, which means if you’re in need of emergency medical assistance, there’s a good chance firefighters will be the first ones to arrive on scene. As a result, it makes abundant sense that fire crews have the capability to provide as much care as possible.

Right now firefighters are limited in the medical intervention they can provide due to training, insurance and defined responsibilities, a situation Delta would like to change. Our civic politicians have ruffled the feathers of colleagues elsewhere in Greater Vancouver, and paramedics throughout the province, with their plan to have local firefighters trained to provide a higher level of medical care.

Because firefighting is a municipal responsibility and the B.C. Ambulance Service is a provincial government service, there’s a worry this plan would somehow be a form of downloading.

There’s no doubt Victoria jumps at any opportunity to pass the buck, but it’s difficult to see this being a huge cost to municipalities.

We’re not talking about replacing paramedics, who are a vital link in our emergency medical system, with firefighters, which would obviously come with a significant cost to local government. Rather, this would see firefighters offer a higher level of medical care until paramedics arrive.

Firefighters are going to be there anyway, so why not have them trained to render more care? Ask any individual who has required immediate medical attention and I’m sure every last one of them would agree that a paramedic would be the preferred first responder, but given firefighters are far more likely to be first on the scene, the next best option is a better trained fire crew.

Mayor Lois Jackson is bang on when she says the plan is simply a matter of trying to get help to those in need.

There’s no motive other than getting people in distress the best available care in the most timely fashion.

It’s laughable to think Delta is somehow anti-B.C. Ambulance Service or anti-paramedic. Municipal politicians and bureaucrats have lobbied for years to establish an ambulance station in Tsawwassen in an attempt to put more paramedics on the ground here, but those calls have all been ignored.

There’s not much civic politicians can do about that, but they can offer citizens the next best thing by ensuring firefighters receive enhanced training.

Is it too late for peace, love and good government in the world?

I’ve been pondering how I might introduce myself in this first column. I have a fridge chock full of quotable magnets made by my artist friend, Eileen Mosca, who is a regular at the Ladner Village Market. I get to choose a new magnet every time I spell her off for a lunch break at the market. I can see these quotes will be lovely springboards for future columns.

This particular magnet she claims to have made especially for me, which is amusing because it’s someone else’s perception of who I am. One of my favourite writers, E.B. Housing variety needed to cater to all ages, budgets

Editor: Re: ‘Economically viable’ not a reason to amend plan, letter to the editor, Sept. 19 I am so glad we have people like Brian Webb who keep us on our toes here in Ladner with regards to building projects, but in this incidence I would like to point out the other side of the story. I am that kind of a person.

Because of community concerns about the height of the building originally proposed, the developers changed the design from a five-storey condo with ground level parking, which is exactly the same as Sunningdale 2 where I used to live. It, of course, may have been built before the latest Ladner Area Plan.

In that building and other the buildings that make up Sunningdale, there live a variety of people that include downsizing retirees,

working singles, new families and physically handicapped people. If you look closely, this is what Ladner is all about.

To my eye, we are not meeting the needs of the community by only allowing townhouses, thus eliminating or making it harder for a diversity of age groups to occupy the building.

There will not be an elevator in this new design so the older folks that were going to have a lovely view will have to change their plans.

A three-storey townhouse may be OK for retirees in their 60 and 70s, but once you get to be 80 it is pretty hard to climb that many stairs.

Someone with mobility issues cannot buy into this type of development no matter what age.

A condo in this location would have been within

ideal walking distance to shopping, which is a big plus and means less traffic.

In the last 10 years, this end of Ladner Trunk Road/47A Avenue has seen several townhouse developments, enough I think, to meet the needs of those who can afford them and get around in them.

New families have to get into the market somehow and condos make it possible. Most new townhouses are pricier.

Yes, the bottom line is that the developer, no matter who, has to make a profit, the area plan has to be followed or changed, and could we also please take into consideration the population of the community.

If you build what people can afford and what accommodates their needs, they will buy and then pay property taxes. Everyone wins!

Money earmarked for bridge would be better spent building hospitals

Editor: The mayor says transportation, transit and a replacement for the George Massey Tunnel are some of the issues she wants to see resolved for Delta.

Perspective is based on values, but one could question whether the values of the mayor reflect the values of the community and how Delta’s citizens want their tax dollars spent?

The cost for the bridge to replace the tunnel is said to be $3 billion, which could build 30 100-bed hospitals

at a cost of $100 million each.

Delta Hospital is currently outdated, underfunded, understaffed and requires modernization to meet the existing needs of the community. More budget cuts are anticipated.

The population of Delta is projected to grow. The new developments that include the Southlands, TFN housing, two huge malls, roads, rail and port expansions will increase the population. Common sense would indicate building

one large modern hospital in Delta with appropriate services might be more of a priority than building a bridge.

The priorities of the citizens of Delta may differ from the priorities of the mayor.

This is worthy of consideration when it comes time to vote in the November civic election.

Perhaps we need a new perspective on Delta council. Perhaps we need a new council.

Editor: Re: Delta defends plan for additional firefighter training, Oct. 1 Having been involved in the provision of emergency medical service as an advanced life support paramedic for almost 30 years, I have seen many different incarnations of a common theme: firefighting services trying to make inroads into the provision of pre-hospital medical care.

Let us drop all pretence that this latest move is motivated by altruism and concern for patient care.

It is not. This is simply another manifestation of the fire services grasping at a means to justify their

Editor: With great regret I will not put my name forward as a candidate for trustee on the Delta board of education, a position I have held proudly since 2005.

During that time I can report the district has been exceptionally well run by our professional staff and there has been so much to celebrate in the performance of our students. It has been my great privilege to be part a system where, on all levels, people work so well together.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the performance of our provincial government with respect to

public education. My nine years have seen continual squeezing of our funding, downloading of costs and denial of responsibility for cuts by government.

Trustees are supposed to be able to ensure the “public” part of public education through a co-governance relationship with the Ministry of Education.

We are the only body specifically elected by local voters with responsibility for public schools, but if we speak out about government actions we risk having our district “punished” by the allocation of scarce resources to other districts.

learn how emergency medical services are delivered before writing cheques.

If Jackson truly has patient care and patient outcomes as her motivation, then don’t waste money on training firefighters. Use the money to create your own ambulance service.

Firefighters and fire trucks cannot transport patients to hospital. Time and time again, evidence has overwhelmingly shown fire department first responders make no difference to patient outcomes.

Jackson is making a purely emotional argument based on ignorance and bad information.

existence in the face of ballooning costs and steadily declining demand. Paying six-digit salaries to employees that prepare meals for themselves and then often sleep through the night on the payroll is a luxury most taxpayers would find appalling.

The provision of anything relating to patient care must undergo the rigorous and impartial scrutiny of evidence in which benefit and safety must be clearly demonstrated. It is ironic because the very role that Delta council is advocating has been overwhelmingly proven as unnecessary and makes no measurable impact on patient outcome.

Since June, school boards had been calling for the schools to be re-opened, but our input was effectively silenced. The only winners were the private schools.

To say the least, it has been frustrating.

Decisions made locally are usually best and school boards need more latitude in how schools are run and in how they are financed. In spite of the best efforts of all involved, our system in B.C. will slip in comparison to other parts of the country if the negative trends in funding are not reversed.

So, after nine years with my warmest best wishes to the next Delta board of education, I am passing the torch. May you continue to do the best you can on behalf of Delta students.

Inland port a tough sell

Editor: Re: Delta continues inland port push, Oct. 1 We all want to avoid Delta farmland being lost to a Deltaport intermodal terminal. What puzzles me is why anyone might want to build one ... either there or inland?

Cost competition drives the container shipping business. Ship owners, terminals and railroads must cut cost to secure business.

Ships go to the closest terminal offering the lowest price for container delivery.

Terminals strive to move containers directly between ship and train or truck, avoiding storage when possible. Containers are trucked between B.C. destinations because it’s less costly; the rest go by rail to and from mid and Eastern Canada and the U.S. Trains don’t stop between origin and destination.

Terminal 2 proposed

by Port Metro Vancouver includes intermodal facilities on its new offshore island. Containers would move directly between ship and truck or train. There is also container storage on the island if needed. CP and CN both have intermodal yards in the Vancouver area, though I doubt container trains stop there.

Would another intermodal yard in Ashcroft reduce the cost of moving containers? No one claims it would. Delta’s consultants say: “This study does not assume that there is a standalone business case for an inland terminal. While the business case is an important consideration, the Corporation of Delta does not consider that it is the only requirement to justify an inland port. Community benefits in the face of higher truck congestion can also lead to support for the facility, and a shift in the

status quo.”

It seems the main reason for an inland terminal is moving Lower Mainland jobs to Ashcroft. CN and CP would be asked to park westbound trains and wait while Ashcroft replaced empty containers with ones containing lumber and wood pulp. They say it would only take an hour, but this is unproven and any benefit to the railroads is unclear.

Eastbound trains and trucks would apparently ignore an inland terminal.

If railroads agree to stop westbound trains and let Ashcroft shuffle containers, there will be fewer westbound trucks ... and truck drivers. No clear and persuasive business case is offered to benefit either PMV or the railroads, so why should they be interested?

Seems like a tough sell.

Mitigation needed for port damage Editor: I attended the Port Metro Vancouver public consultation meeting on Sept 29.

The purpose of the meeting was to review the environmental damage done by the port to South Delta and further damage to be caused by port expansion, and to discuss potential mitigation.

A lowlight of this meeting was the moment I realized why the port expansion will be so huge. The proposed expansion exceeds the port’s highest forecast of potential growth. I do not believe the port’s engineers are poor at math; instead, I remembered a speech by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson in which he talked about moving port operations from Burrard Inlet to Roberts Bank.

It was a light bulb moment: Vancouver doesn’t want the pollution, the 2,600 trucks per day, the noise. Has Vancouver found its solution to these problems at Roberts Bank?

The port acknowledged damage to South Delta of light pollution, noise pollution, air quality, marine quality, beach erosion and wildlife habitat. Expansion will cause further damage.

There are no serious efforts to resolve any of these issues. Ships at Roberts Bank have always burned the cheapest bunker fuel, creating air pollution.

All ships in North America have now been regulated to move to higher quality fuel, but the port does not inspect or enforce this regulation, and is unsure what

government body would do so. Hmmm, that’s not protecting our environment.

The port has already created serious environmental degradation, and the expansion project appears to be unstoppable. If we cannot stop the degradation of our environment, we should demand mitigation from the port. And the port is seeking our input, as required by the Canadian Environmental Agency.

I encourage all South Delta residents to demand mitigation projects for South Delta, and to outline projects you feel will start to mitigate the damage.

Cranberries? Check. Russet potatoes? Check, check, check.

I am making a grocery list.

Normally, this is not something I particularly enjoy. Enjoyment, in fact, is something I reckon no one on this planet associates with a grocery list.

Enjoyment pertains to the listening of concerts, the reading of books, the sipping of sauvignon blanc.

Not to the writing of grocery lists.

But today’s another matter — and so was the whole of last week.

All last week, mindful as I was of the big day approaching, I sat down with my Best of Bridge and my Joy of Cooking and my 60-Minute Gourmet and my Fanny Farmer Cookbook. I went through my mother’s

old recipe box and drew out the cards that she’d given five stars.

I went through my binder of magazine clippings, and made little piles of contenders: salads, soups, vegetables, appetizers. I went online and searched out stuffing.

Again, not my normal practice.

When it comes to meal planning, my system usually follows a pattern. I will look in the freezer.

I will find a container of something I can’t identify, given that the label will have fallen off. I will return the container to the freezer, put on my shoes and go to the store, where I will play a quiet game of eeny meenie miny moe and toss some chicken wings or pork chops in my basket.

Again, only slightly more enjoyable than cleaning the grout in the bathroom.

Not so in the days before Thanksgiving.

No, sir. In the days before Thanksgiving, I am fired up with the prep work, which doesn’t feel much like work to me.

I will buy the seasonal napkins.

I will iron the seasonal placemats.

I will get the orange candles.

I will order the turkey.

I will polish the silverware and bring out the china.

I will put the berry wreath on the front door and set out a little bowl of mini pumpkins and make a centerpiece with coloured leaves and apples and oranges.

I’ll set the table — and then I’ll set to planning the meal.

I’m often humming while I’m at it.

Thanksgiving, you see, happens to be my all-time favourite. The unofficial start to fall, it’s when the hearth is crackling again and the candles are glowing and kitchen smells heavenly and the family’s here to gather around the table.

Today, I’m making a grocery list. On Friday, I’ll head to the store.

I’m counting down to the yearly feast. And for that, I’m mighty grateful.

Annual Beach Grove Amateur raises $8,000 for South Delta Food Bank

Participants in the recent Envision Financial Men’s Beach Grove Amateur Championship not only battled it out on the course, they supported the South Delta Food Bank and local families in need.

“Supporting the South Delta Food Bank is perfectly aligned to our signature cause — The Full Cupboard — which aims to raise food, funds and awareness for local food

banks,” says Courtney Roth, branch manager at Envision Financial’s Tsawwassen location.

“At Envision Financial, we are committed to making a meaningful difference in our local community and supporting this event allows us to do just that.”

This year, the annual tournament raised $8,000, all of which will be donated to the South Delta Food Bank, which serves 80 to

90 families with children every week in addition to seniors and local Aboriginal people.

Completely volunteer run, the food bank relies on the generosity of the community to support its mission.

A group meeting regularly in South Delta is hoping to help local residents discover affordable retirement options.

Tsawwassen resident Paul Miniato and his wife Cheryl started the South Delta “Free at 55” Meetup in early 2012. He said the meetup was initially conceived as a discussion group around retirement issues and alternatives.

“We wanted to get information for people who are ready to retire,” Miniato said.

The group meets on a monthly basis in Tsawwassen and Ladner, covering a variety of topics.

The next meeting is set for Saturday, Oct. 18 and will cover Language Learning and the Mature Mind.

Annual Apple Day to fund activities for Boundary Bay Beavers & Cubs

Pick up a tasty apple and support local Beavers and Cubs Saturday at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall.

The 3rd Boundary Bay Cubs and Beavers are holding Apple Day in the breezeway and various other spots around the mall.

The groups, with youth ranging in age from five to 10, are raising money by accepting donations for apples. The funds will be put towards camps, weekly programming and badges.

Natalie Shantz, a leader in both the Beaver and Cub groups, notes the fundraiser is a great experience for the kids for pride and awareness of the troop. The Beavers and Cubs receive an Apple Day badge as well.

There is much team building for the kids as well as parents as apples are run to various stations and it is a day of working together for a common goal, Shantz explains.

Delta officially opened the bike pump track at Holly Park in East Ladner last Saturday.

Bike pump tracks are one of the fastest growing attractions in biking as they are small in scale and can be enjoyed by cyclists of all ages and skill levels. The project was spearheaded by Brett Armstrong of the Shed Bike Club, whose members designed and built the track with materials provided by the Corporation of Delta After the official ceremonies, club members demonstrated their riding skills on the new track. Mike Warn has played a leading role in helping a South Carolina school crack the national men’s soccer rankings for the first time in six years.

The Ladner goalkeeper is enjoying a superb sophomore season at Francis Marion University, located in Florence, a city with a population of about 40,000.

The Patriots are ranked No. 22 among all NCAA Division II schools and that status is poised to climb after a 3-0 victory Saturday over North Georgia University. Warn earned his sixth shutout of the season in nine starts (6-1-2 record) and his goals against average of 0.52 also ranks him in the top 10 in the nation.

“It has been a great experience so far,” said Warn last week. “It’s almost like I’m living two separate lives. There is my time back home with my family and friends while down here this team has really become my family. There are a couple of guys I am boarding with off-campus and all of us usually hang out together when we are not on the field.”

Warn was part of a talented group that came through the Ladner Boys Soccer Club and was coached by Terry James and Pete Findlay. He moved onto the Metro Selects level

before closing out his youth career in the fledgling B.C. Premier Soccer League with Fusion and Coastal FC. The plan was to continue his career at a Canadian school until Patriots’ head coach John Campbell happened to view a recruiting video Warn had put together.

He promptly wrote his SAT to qualify him for American university and later travelled south to visit the campus and meet with Campbell. Warn was offered a spot and, more importantly, the school’s biology curriculum was the right fit as he works his way towards pre-medical studies.

A typical day will see him in classes until 1:30 p.m. It’s then lunch and homework before heading to the team’s training facility for a two-hour practice session.

Games are on Saturdays and mid-week, with only a

couple of road dates requiring overnight stays.

He made three appearances in his freshman season and provided a glimpse of what was to come by earning conference goalie of the week honours after his first career shutout.

“The mid-week game was something I wasn’t really used to,” he admitted.

“We usually have just one more practice and then it’s a real quick turnaround to play again on Saturday.”

Warn is part of a huge international flavour on the Patriots’ roster. Of the 20 players, only two are Americans. There are four from Canada, six from Germany, four from the United Kingdom, two from France and one each from Norway and Sweden.

Campbell also happens to be Canadian.

With Marion’s enrollment of just over 4,000, the adjustment from high school to campus life has been smooth.

“Coming from home, it’s the perfect size for me,” Warn said. “It’s only about three times the size of DSS so you are seeing a lot of the same people all the time.”

“We had our moments but they were too rare. We have to work hard to come back

better in four years time.”

Charuk, a 25-year-old middle blocker, was a standout for the South Delta Sun Devils before earning a full-ride scholarship to the University of Houston where she enjoyed a decorated collegiate career.

Since graduating, she has

been playing professionally in Europe. She entered the 2014 competition season with appearances in 26 international matches.

Charuk had 14 points in the win over Cameroon and was Canada’s top scorer against Turkey with nine.

She added 11 versus Serbia

and 10 against Bulgaria.

Canada entered the world championships ranked 21st.

The competition features four teams from Asia, two from Africa, 10 from Europe, two from South America and six from the North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
